MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk It was great to catch up with Dave Carr and Paul Maher for this week's cover story on men's health and prostate cancer (see pages 4 and 5). The affable pair are determined to share their story of cancer treatment and survival with our readers, particularly the blokes. They did so with frankness and a touch of good humour and I thank them for it. As we all know, men - myself included - tend to be reluctant to put the hand up when it comes to health matters, often preferring to take the 'I'm 10 feet tall and bullet-proof ' approach, which is pretty dumb when you think about it. We males also tend to get a bit squeamish on the subject of prostate cancer and its diagnosis, but the good news is that the, ahem, 'techniques' have improved somewhat, and a simple blood test can provide an effective early warning. November is 'Men's Health' month. I didn't grow a moustache because I look ridiculous with facial hair, but I am more than happy for the Free Times to endorse Dave and Paul's drive to raise awareness. For goodness sake you blokes, get tested regularly for prostate cancer if you're over 50 - or younger if there's a family history. Jeremy Sollars

CHAMBER TENDERS FOR DAM PLAN BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce will offer the Southern Downs Regional Council $8000 to secure environmental approvals to progress the proposed Emu Swamp Dam project. The offer is substantially below the council’s asking price of $1,501,980 as outlined in its tender documents, which it terms “cost recovery”. The council put the approvals up for sale by tender this month in what is seen at best as a hopeful bid to claw back funds expended by previous councils in moving the dam project forward, and at worst a grab for cash. This is despite the Chamber of Commerce - which is the ‘proponent’ for the dam and is finalising a business case to secure State and Federal funding - being the only likely bidder for the approvals. The Chamber of Commerce has previously pointed out that under Queensland law such approvals can be released free of charge to a non-profit group like the Chamber under “community interest” provisions. But the council has deemed the approvals to be council “assets” which can be sold off commercially to the highest bidder, even though Mayor Tracy Dobie has made it publicly clear the council does not support Emu Swamp Dam. Cr Dobie has repeatedly stated the council will not help fund the dam’s construction, even though its supporters

have always conceded the project is beyond the financial scope of the council and would need State and Federal funds to be built. The Chamber has made it clear the current detailed business case being prepared for the State and Federal governments has no reliance on any council contributions, but does factor in nearly $24 million from private farming family investors. In its tender document submitted to the council last week the Chamber points out that a significant amount of funds have been expended directly by the community since as far back as 2007 to try and make Emu Swamp Dam a reality. The environmental approvals were granted to the council by the Queensland Government in September 2014 and were extended to include federal approvals in November 2014. “In this nearly eight-year period significant funds, support activities and expertise were contributed in the development of the Approvals by State Government officers from the then DNR, QDPI and Dept State Development, State Government grants, private funds as well as ratepayer funds,” the Chamber’s tender documents state. “Consequently the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber do not believe the ‘cost recovery’ for disposal of the Approvals by just one party is equitable or morally correct. “The approvals were sought for the purpose of developing a dam and pipeline

the Chamber has also pointed out the process chosen by the council will add to the delays in planning for the dam. The Chamber will complete its business case and deliver it to the State Government by the end of November. Approval of the business case by the State Government is the next step before federal funding can be sought. ●

network, not for sale or cost recovery if the project did not proceed under the council’s stewardship. “The costs were incurred by the council, representing the community, from annual expenditure and it is believed that the approvals were never classified as assets.” Because the tender won’t be concluded by the council until just before Christmas

COUNCIL SUED OVER LACK OF MOWING - SINCE JULY 2016 BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Stanthorpe Sports Association (SSA) is suing the Southern Downs Regional Council for more than $26,000 after claiming the council breached the Association's lease of its McGlew Street sporting fields by failing to mow the fields since July 2016. The SSA has been embroiled in a dispute with the council over a new five-year lease it signed over the McGlew Street ovals in May 2016, with the lease clearly stipulating mowing was the responsibility of the council, as it had been since the first lease was executed in 2008 with the former Stanthorpe Shire Council. But on 28 July 2016 the council wrote to the SSA stating that provisions in the lease around mowing were unclear - specifically that the lease was "silent" on the standard to which the fields were to be mowed - and advising the SSA that the council would only mow "within 10 days of (the grass) reaching 100mm" in height.

It was believed at the time that senior council officers who drafted the new lease may have overlooked the mowing clause - with its associated costs - and later sought to 'backtrack' via the 28 July correspondence. The SSA accused the council of attempting to manipulate the terms of the lease in order to save itself money, and further that the lease had already been signed and executed and could not be varied by a letter sent after the signing. In a claim lodged with the Magistrates Court of Queensland on Monday of this week, 26 November, lodged on its behalf by Stanthorpe's V C Catanzaro Solicitors, the SSA states it intends to sue to the council for a total of $26,175.85, being the costs to the SSA of mowing since July 2016. The SSA has been forced to engage a number of local contractors to mow the McGlew Street ovals since that time and to pay for fuel and associated expenses. The court claim lodged by the SSA also refers to significant amounts of correspondence over the mowing

issue between the SSA and the council since July 2016, and a series of meetings between SSA executive members and councillors and council staff. Reference is made to a meeting between the SSA and Mayor Tracy Dobie on 5 October 2016, at which the mayor is said to have stated that she "made the decision that the lease could not go ahead and sought legal advice to break the lease". "The legal advice received was that the lease had gone too far and could not be broken, however we could set a level of maintenance as the clause of the lease was ambiguous", the claim quotes the mayor as saying. "The Council has no money. There is no money in the bank," Cr Dobie is quoted as saying. "If something happens and there is a disaster Council will not be able to get a loan of money." The council had 28 days from Monday to inform the court if it intends to contest the SSA's legal action.. ●

COVER STORY

TIME TO LISTEN UP R BY JEREMY SOLLARS

ighto you blokes - it's time to listen up and smarten up when it comes to prostate cancer, not to mention other men's health issues in the 'Men's Health' month of 'Movember'. According to the Cancer Council, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in men in Australia, and the third most common cause of cancer deaths overall. One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the age of 85 and while it's more common in older men - with 63 per cent of cases diagnosed in men over 65 years of age - all men aged 50 and above can be at risk, and if there's a family history, those even younger. But the good news is that, like most cancers, prostate cancer can be treated and

Men's health is under the microscope in ''Movember''. cured if detected early. The Free Times recently caught up with two of the region's most recent prostate cancer survivors, both of whom were successfully treated and who helped each other through the process after a chance meeting at Warwick Hospital.

Sally and Dave Carr and Paul and Monica Maher - the boys recommend a prostate cancer screening blood test annually for those over 50. The experts say every two years, but why not play it safe? Cover photo – Dave Carr and Paul Maher with Warwick GP Dr Lynton Hudson.

Dave Carr and Paul Maher didn't grow moustaches for 'Movember', but they have a message they want other blokes to hear loud and clear - look after yourself and get tested regularly for prostate cancer. The two mates have known each other for years but had no idea they were booked in to see visiting Ipswich urologist Dr Wesley Hii at the hospital on the same day - and for the same reason - a few short months ago. Dave, 66, had been experiencing some unusual bathroom behaviours, while Paul, 67, had no inkling anything was amiss. Unbeknown to them, they'd both had blood tests around the same time which showed their PSA - or Prostate Specific Antigen - was elevated, which can be an early sign of prostate cancer. The pair then had MRI scans and biopsies which revealed both of their prostates were cancerous but, fortunately, no

cancer cells had spread beyond the prostate glands. Nevertheless, surgery was required to remove their prostates and Dave and Paul who jokingly refer to themselves "the twins" - booked in for the same day at St Andrews Hospital in Toowoomba, on the Friday before the Warwick Rodeo, so alas, no beers that weekend. All went well and while the two - along with their wives Sally and Monica, who work together at the Condamine Medical Centre - are relieved the ordeal is behind them, they want to grow the conversation around prostate awareness. "If we can save one bloke from around here a year then it's worth it," Paul said. "Years ago it was something that was never talked about. "We just want to get the message out there - which is to get tested every year if you're over 50.

"The best thing to do is to have it done around your birthday so you don't forget. "It's a simple blood test, the (digital) rectal examination isn't always necessary and that's the thing I think that puts a lot of blokes off." Paul recalled the phone call from the urologist after his biopsy results came in. "He said to me, 'Don't be alarmed, but there is some cause for concern'," Paul said. "He told me it was cancerous and aggressive and I'd need surgery. "You do get a bit of a tingle down the spine - you think, 'Well, this is for real'." For Dave and Paul having the support of a mate enduring the same treatment was a bonus. "We were basically side by side throughout the whole thing - we were just about holding hands," Dave laughed. "They put us next to each other in intensive care after surgery, and then we got shifted into the same private room. "We even found we were ordering the same meals. "But it was great we were able to support each other, it really helped us get through it. "And the care was exceptional everything is explained very clearly to you at every stage of the process. "The surgeon and the nursing and hospital staff were just brilliant." Dave explained that prostate biopsy results are rated on the 'Gleason's Scale', with a score between one and six prompting a "keep an eye on it" situation, while a 'seven' means surgery within a year. Anything between eight and 10 indicates "aggressive" cancer requiring prompt prostate removal, which is done robotically by the surgeon through the groin area. "If you're carrying a bit of extra weight the surgery can take a bit longer - in my case Dr Hii looked at me and said, 'Hmm, a very fat man,' so I told him to take the fat out at the same time," Dave joked. "My op took about four-and-a-half hours - Paul's a bit skinnier than me so his was around three hours. "We went in on the Friday and we were out on the Monday." And in case you're wondering - which you almost certainly will be - for the majority of men things pretty much return to normal 'downstairs' post-surgery with both urinary and sexual function, but as the prostate gland produces most of the fluid which makes up semen, without it - well, you can work that bit out for yourself. (Or Google up 'prostate surgery and sex' ... ) And don't forget your pelvic-floor exercises, fellas ...

WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER? · Prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells develop in the prostate. These abnormal cells can continue to multiply in an uncontrolled way and sometimes spread outside the prostate into nearby or distant parts of the body. · Prostate cancer is generally a slow-growing disease and the majority of men with low-grade prostate cancer live for many years without symptoms and without it spreading and becoming life-threatening. However, highgrade disease spreads quickly and can be lethal. Appropriate management is key. ●

PROSTATE CANCER SYMPTOMS ...

Don't be a mug about men's health - get to know a GP.

SHOUT-OUT BACKED Warwick GP Dr Lynton Hudson thoroughly backs Dave and Paul in their shout-out to local blokes to get a yearly blood test for prostate cancer - as well as being aware of bowel cancer and heart disease risks, two other "biggies" when it comes to men's health. "There's been a lot of great stuff happening in the prostate cancer space in the last five years or so," Dr Hudson told the Free Times. "There had been some disagreement between the College of GPs and the College of urologists over frequency of screening. "But there are now agreed guidelines which are that men over 50 should have the blood test every two years, and if there's a family history that needs to start from 45, or 40 if there's two close family members, say a dad and a brother with a history. "Personally I recommend the blood test every one to two years. "The biopsy technique has also improved - previously it was done through the rectum, which had a sepsis (infection) risk, now it's done through the perineum. "There's now also a government rebate for the MRI, which is great.

"And the need for the digital examination is pretty much out - the blood test is usually sufficient." Dr Hudson said simple and effective screening for bowel cancer is widely available - a simple 'faecal' or 'poo' test and heart disease screening is also on the improve, with a CT scan for coronary artery calcium costing around $130 to $150.

WHAT IS THE PROSTATE? · Only men have a prostate. It is a small gland that sits below the bladder near the rectum. It surrounds the urethra, the passage in the penis through which urine and semen pass. · The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system. It produces most of the fluid that makes up semen that enriches sperm. The prostate needs the male hormone testosterone to grow and develop. · The prostate is often described as being the size of a walnut and it is normal for it to grow as men age. Sometimes this can cause problems, such as difficulty urinating. These problems are common in older men and not always symptoms or signs of cancer.

In the early stages, there may be no symptoms. In the later stages, some symptoms of prostate cancer might include · Feeling the frequent or sudden need to urinate · Finding it difficult to urinate (for example, trouble starting or not being able to urinate when the feeling is there or poor urine flow) · Discomfort when urinating · Finding blood in urine or semen · Pain in the lower back, upper thighs or hips. · These symptoms may not mean you have prostate cancer, but if you experience any of them, go and see your doctor.

DIAGNOSIS ... If your tests show you may be at risk of prostate cancer, the next step is a biopsy. A biopsy is the only way a firm diagnosis of prostate cancer can be made. A urologist removes small samples of tissue from your prostate, using very thin, hollow needles guided by an ultrasound. The prostate is either accessed through the rectum (transrectal) or the perineum (transperineal), which is the area between the anus and the scrotum. A biopsy is usually done as an outpatient procedure and the doctor will likely advise a course of antibiotics afterwards to reduce the chance of infection. The tissue is sent to a pathologist to identify whether the cells are malignant (cancerous) or benign (not cancerous). · Want to find out more? Visit www. prostate.org.au · And get your blood test done! (Source - Prostate Cancer Australia) ●

CHERRABAH WATER TO THE GOLD COAST? BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Brisbane-based owners of Cherrabah Resort east of Warwick have applied for council approval to extract up to 100 million litres of underground water a year from the Elbow Valley property, to be bottled on the Gold Coast for human consumption. Wenxing Ma and his younger brother Wenwei Ma are the owners of Cherrabah and are also listed in public records as the directors of Royal Duke Holdings, the company which has applied to the Southern Downs Regional Council for permission to proceed with the venture. In late September this year Royal Duke Holdings lodged a Material Change of Use application with the council for 'Commercial Ground Water Extraction' and 'Taking or Interfering with Underground Water'. Public submissions on the application closed last Friday 23 November and a range of neighbouring property owners have lodged strenuous objections to the proposal, stating that water extraction of such a volume will have a detrimental impact on their own underground water supplies. The application could be considered at the last council meeting for 2018, scheduled for Wednesday 19 December. Cherrabah has a licence to extract up to 96 megalitres (ML) of underground water per year from its land, until the year 2111. But despite their objections some neighbours are doubtful that any such volume of underground water even exists in any 12-month period on Cherrabah, an opinion which appears to be shared by hydrology consultants Rockwater Pty Ltd. Rockwater undertook an assessment of water capacity on Cherrabah in 2009 as part of previous plans by the Ma brothers to develop Cherrabah as an international fivestar tourist resort and 'mini-city' of several thousand permanent residents, similar to Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast. The Rockwater report estimated Cherrabah "may be able to extract 200ML/ year, based on aquifer modelling" but also noted the modelling was "constructed with limited data, therefore the confidence in model predictions cannot be extended beyond 12 months". "Cherrabah must demonstrate that the aquifer is sustainable in the long term, and that extended pumping will have no detrimental impact on neighbouring groundwater users and the environment,"

Is there water in them there hills? the report states. "There is considerable risk in planning a long term project based on a groundwater supply that has not been strenuously tested through extended simultaneous pumping from the proposed borefield. "Although groundwater modelling indicates that 200ML/year may be attainable for a 12 month period, there is no certainty that pumping at the desired rate will be achievable beyond that period." The massive Cherrabah redevelopment plan was shelved in October 2016 with a spokesman for the Ma brothers telling the Free Times the "current market" was "quite tight", although it is understood the Ma's were unhappy about conditions imposed by the council including road upgrades, and environmental requirements related to the rare spotted-tail quoll. "However we are still keen to invest in some other small-scale tourism projects for Cherrabah and we will work with the council for other potential opportunities in Cherrabah and Warwick," the spokesman said at the time. Along with water, since ditching their mega-resort plans the Ma brothers appear to have been attempting to extract as much commercial gain as they can from Cherrabah, with quad bike riding, clay target shooting and plans for a granite mine, the last of which is still in the application stage. ●

WATER PLAN DETAILS ... A town planning report provided to the council by the Ma brothers' planning consultants Cardno states the application "is proposing to develop a water extraction and distribution facility on part of the (Cherrabah) site". "The facility will include a proprietary filter system and water storage tanks within a purpose-built shed. "Bottling of water will not occur on site.

OBJECTIONS LODGED ... One local landowner who has lodged an objection with the council against the development is Liam O'Dea. His grounds of objection include claims that Cherrabah/Royal Duke Holdings has "failed to show that the resource is able to support the project". "The applicant has failed to demonstrate that the aquifer is sustainable in the long term, and that extended pumping will have no detrimental impact on neighbouring groundwater users and the environment," Mr O'Dea stated. "Cherrabah must demonstrate that the aquifer is sustainable in the long term, and that extended pumping will have no detrimental impact on neighbouring groundwater users and the environment. "The applicant has made no attempt to research the likely effects on neighbouring groundwater users "The applicant has produced no evidence that the export of one hundred million litres of water from Elbow Valley groundwater aquifers every year will not cause major harm to other landholders. "Water licence No. 18729 (held by Cherrabah) cannot be taken as evidence that the water is available nor that extraction will not cause harm to surrounding enterprises.

"It was granted without community consultation and without consideration of the effect on the local community. "There are no attached conditions. "There are virtually no benefits to the local community nor the SDRC. "Elbow Valley is known to be very lacking in groundwater. "It is not feasible that the extraction of 100 ML or even 10ML would not have a severe impact on surrounding farming operations. "SDRC is likely to be subject to litigation if this occurs. "Further, Keogh Road is a single lane road built for light traffic only - heavy tanker traffic would do much damage, and SDRC would have to rebuild this road. "Therefore, I submit that this MCU application should be denied in full."

THE MA BROTHERS ... Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) records list Wenxing and Wenwei Ma as joint directors of both Joyful View Garden Real Estate Development Resort Co Pty Ltd - the entity which owns Cherrabah Resort and of Royal Duke Holdings. The brothers were born in Guangdong (formerly Canton) in the People's Republic of China in 1964 and 1971 respectively, with their residential addresses listed as being in the Sunnybank area in Brisbane's south. Joyful View Garden has been listed as an Australian corporate entity since September 2004 and Royal Duke Holdings since September 2014. It would appear the Cherrabah redevelopment isn't the only major Queensland project the Ma brothers have pursued and later abandoned. Royal Duke Holdings was named in Gold Coast media in early 2017 as the development firm behind a proposed 94-storey, 500-apartment tower at Broadbeach. They are believed to have paid up to $8 million for a site on Mary Avenue, a block away from the surf, to construct the tower, which would have dwarfed every other building in Broadbeach. Other media have reported the Ma brothers have commercial property interests in Brisbane worth $12 million. ●

THE UNFAIR FRUIT The operators of a Granite Belt farm have been penalised almost $70,000 and ordered to overhaul their workplace practices following legal action by the Fair Work Ombudsman. In a statement released last week the Ombudsman said the farm owners have "a history of flouting workplace laws". "The Federal Circuit Court has imposed the penalties against the operators of a strawberry farm on Newlands Road at Cottonvale, near Stanthorpe," the statement said. CONDY BUS IS AT YOUR SERVICE Patrons are showing they are very keen to take up the offer of the Condamine Sports Club's recently-purchased courtesy bus. The Toyota HiAce bus seats 12 including the driver very comfortably and the Club will happily pick patrons from the Warwick area up from home and drop them back Monday through to Saturday evenings between 5.30pm and 9pm. This means you can enjoy a beverage or two with your delicious 'Condy' meal or while trying your hand in the gaming area and not have to worry about driving. The courtesy bus will also transport you to the Condamine Sports Club's Hawker Road Function Centre at the Warwick Golf Club and home again. Black Toyota Warwick Branch Manager Jason Denny said the company did a good deal

with the Club on the vehicle and was happy to see it out and about in the community. The eye-catching signage 'wrap' on the bus - with the signature 'See you @ the Condy' logo was created by Warwick's Zooma Signs. Condamine Sports Club Manager Stephen Domjahn said the courtesy bus was already proving popular with patrons, who are more than welcome to call the Club and arrange a trip. Both the Condamine Sports Club's Sporties Grill and Bistro and the Hawker Road Function Centre offer top meal deals and more - check them out online at www. condaminesportsclub.com.au and visit and 'Like' the Condamine Sports Club on Facebook. Tay-Duc Nguyen, the farm's former operations manager, have each been penalised $6400 - and Him's company, I Luv Pty Ltd, has been penalised a further $56,000. "The Fair Work Ombudsman discovered that six overseas workers had been underpaid a total of $2601 when the farm was audited last year as part of the Agency's national Harvest Trail Inquiry. "The six employees, on 417 working holiday visas, were underpaid over a twoweek period in 2015."

NEWS FIRE BAN IN PLACE Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) imposed a local fire ban for south-west Queensland residents, including the Southern Downs and Granite Belt regions yesterday, Wednesday 28 November. The fire ban comes as severe bushfires this week devastated Queensland regional communities including the Gladstone region, parts of which the State Government declared a disaster zone on Monday. The Southern Downs Regional Council area local fire ban will be in place until midnight tomorrow, Friday 30 November, and could be extended. The ban also applies to residents in the Toowoomba, Goondiwindi, Western Downs and Maranoa local government areas. Under a local fire ban the lighting of all open fires is prohibited and all fire permits are cancelled. • Updates online at www. freetimes.com.au. More information on fire bans is available at www.ruralfire. qld.gov.au

UP FOR LEASE The former Bunnings outlet at the corner of Palmerin and Albert Streets in the Warwick CBD will undergo an internal re-design ahead of anticipated new tenants. The building is being marketed by Colliers International Toowoomba for commercial leasing. A spokesman told the Free Times discussions were underway with "several" potential new tenants and the

The now-former Bunnings Warwick site is up for lease. Brisbane-based owners of the building are now in engaged in "a design phase to see how new tenants could be accommodated". The spokesman said BCF Australia had been mentioned as a potential new tenant but it was still "early days".

FIX FALLS ROAD Locals are being encouraged to sign an E-Petition to the State Government calling for the upgrade of the The Head Road on the Falls Tourist Drive on the Main Range near Killarney. Spring Creek Mountain Cafe and Cottages owner Beverly Ruskey started the E-Petition and says the Scenic Rim Regional Council which has responsibility for the road has been lobbied for "years" to fix it but says it has no available funds. "This road is very popular with motorbike riders, cyclists and motorists, but it is very unsafe in its present state," Beverly said in a Facebook post about the E-Petition. "Also it is the alternate and faster route from Brisbane and the Gold Coast to the Southern Downs, rather than

coming via Cunninghams Gap (and) it is a much prettier drive. "Guests often say that they feel like they are at last in the country once they get off the highway at Yamanto. "The majority of visitors break their journey stopping in Boonah, a great little town with heaps to offer, before continuing on to the Southern Downs or to NSW. "We would just like to ask (Scenic Rim) council to repair the broken edges on this road and cut back the vegetation on the sides to make the road safer and easier to travel on. "A good clean up at the viewing spot for Teviot Falls as well, wouldn't go astray." The petition closes at the end of December, To sign it visit www. parliament.qld.gov.au and click on the "Work of the Assembly' and 'Petitions' links - E-Petition number 2963-18.

SAY NO AT BREAKFAST DV breakfastThe Zonta Club of Warwick and Warwick Safe Haven will hold a 'Say No To Violence Against Women' breakfast at Warwick Gardens Galore on Saturday 8 December, with a 7pm for 7.30pm start. The special guest speaker will be popular Brisbane journalist Kathleen Noonan, who is chair of 'Second Chance', a charity that supports atrisk women and children in domestic violence shelters. The breakfast events marks Zonta's global '16 Days of Activism' on domestic violence.

Well-spotted - by everyone.

CORRECTION... Our cover story last week on the Killarney Tornado 50th anniversary included a photo of damage to the Capitol Theatre which featured a Ford Falcon police vehicle. Readers correctly pointed out that as the Falcon appeared to be an XE model produced in the early 1980s - the photo could not possibly have been from the aftermath of the Tornado in 1968. The image was in fact the aftermath of the Capitol Theatre fire, which clearly - happened some years after the Tornado. Our apologies for the error and well spotted by our eagle-eyed readers.

LENGTHY RECOVERY FOR INJURED WOMAN BY JEREMY SOLLARS A GoFundMe campaign launched for a Stanthorpe woman who sustained serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle on the night of Saturday 17 November continues to grow closer to its $3000 target. Amanda Favero (pictured) was struck from behind by a vehicle at the corner of Symes and Folkestone Street while walking through town with a friend. The GoFundMe page states the young single mother of two sustained multiple broken bones, fractures and bruises, her sight has been affected and she has undergone an operation. It also states she will be unable to work for a lengthy period while recovering from her injuries. Amanda was flown by RACQ LifeFlight to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital in the early hours of last Sunday morning after initial treatment at Stanthorpe Hospital.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Stanthorpe Police on 4681 6400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1300 333 000. The Free Times was told the vehicle involved was stolen by the occupants prior to the incident but a Queensland Police spokesman said there were no "flags" in the system suggesting this was the case. He said Ms Favero's injuries were "not life-threatening" but that investigations were continuing. "There were witnesses and police are bringing that information together and depending on where that leads charges may or may not be laid," the spokesman said. "It may be that the driver of the vehicle was unable to see the person (who was struck) as they were wearing dark clothing and were on the road and not the footpath." No charges had been laid at time of printing of the Free Times this week. ●

More than 40,500 tiles went onto the new roof at Stanthorpe Hospital.

HOSPITAL WELL AND TRULY COVERED IN ROOF REVOLUTION "The main building is a magnificent example of 1930s architecture, so we are very pleased to have it looking brand new once again. "Of course this is about more than just looks, the project was undertaken to ensure we provide the best possible facility for our patients, visitors and staff. "More than 40,500 tiles were used, with 26,500 being replaced on the main building and 14,000 on the Western Annexe, so this

was a very significant project. "I would like to acknowledge our Darling Downs Health project officer Jamie Ryan for his efforts in working with hospital management and staff, and the construction contractors McNab Constructions, to see that the project went as smoothly as possible and was finished ahead of time." Stanthorpe Hospital Acting Director of Nursing Vanessa Rolph said the end-result of the project was a credit to all involved.

"I think all would agree, the results are outstanding." ● 12403550-CG47-18

The Stanthorpe Hospital roofing project has been completed with "spectacular results", Queensland Health says. Darling Downs Health Executive Director Infrastructure Dr Paul Clayton said the grand structure had been returned to its former glory. The Class of '68. (Photo courtesy Shirley Olive).

WSHS SENIOR CLASS OF ’68 REUNION In November 1968 53 students sat for their Senior examinations at Warwick State High School. In November 2018, about half of them returned for their 50th reunion. In the weeks leading up to the occasion the classmates exchanged news, photographs and life histories via email. Peter Johnson and Eric Turner started the search for names and addresses. "I did ring a few relatives of the students still in Warwick, or who I knew, to try to track down others," Peter said. "It was initially mainly phone calls and

following up on the leads." Eric said he'd been "trying to garner interest through Facebook for about 12 months, but was disappointed in the initial response". "But the most exciting part for me, as I love research, was trying to locate people." Most of the 1968 class have retired after following various careers and raising families. Several have died. Some have lived in Warwick for most of the 50 years while a couple of them, as young graduates, returned to teach at WSHS.

Two of the former classmates married soon after leaving their school days behind. Many of the 1968 Seniors started at Warwick Intermediate School in Form 1 in 1963, the last intake to do their 7th grade there. In 1964, they were the first to enter Grade 8 instead of Form 2 in the Intermediate School. The reunion last Saturday 24 November began casually with lunch in Leslie Park, close to the swimming pool where some had excelled in the annual swimming carnivals.

Afterwards the group went back to school to marvel over the changes and reminisce about the rooms where they once sat as Classes 12A1 and 12A2. Rested, refreshed and changed at various motels around town, the party met for dinner at the RSL and again for breakfast the next morning at Gardens Galore. All agreed that they had a very good time. There are no plans yet for a 60th reunion in 2028. - Contributed by Stephany Evans Steggall ●

NEWS

BUNNINGS OFFICIALLY OPENED Australian netball icon and former captain of the national team - and one of Allora's favourite daughters - Laura Geitz joined Bunnings Warehouse General Manager Operations Ryan Baker, Complex Manager Dan Pfingst and the local Bunnings team to celebrate the official opening of the new Bunnings Warehouse Warwick last Friday 23 December. Bunnings invested more than $20 million into the new store which replaces the existing store on Palmerin Street, to offer the local community convenient access to an even wider range of home improvement and outdoor living products backed by the best service. Dan Pfingst said team members are excited to lend a helping hand in the local community and welcome local residents to the new store. "Our team members have supported a number of community groups already, including working with the Warwick Netball Club to refresh their kitchen area and paint their equipment storage garage," Dan said. "The team also helped Warwick East State School earlier this month by making over their garden retreat area with new soil and plants." Representatives from the community groups were also at the store this morning to help celebrate the opening. "Bunnings is always on the lookout for opportunities to contribute to local causes and we look forward to providing assistance to more local community groups in the future," Dan said. "Our team has worked extremely hard to prepare the store for opening and they can't wait to share their extensive D.I.Y. knowledge with customers who are undertaking home improvement projects." Dan said Bunnings Warehouse Warwick will continue to provide ongoing support to local community groups to raise funds for a variety of causes by hosting the famous Bunnings Sausage Sizzles. Bunnings Warehouse Warwick is located at the corner of Canning Street and Condamine Street.

Laura Geitz was on hand to sign free netballs and footballs.

The Warwick Bunnings team.

Laura answered questions about her sporting career and life after netball.

RENTING LAW CHANGES The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) welcomes the 'Open Doors to Renting Reform' consultation which forms part of the Queensland Government's Department of Housing and Public Works (HPW) ongoing review of the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act (2008). A snap poll on the' Open Doors to Renting Reform' website asked: "Would a pet bond help tenants and property owners reach agreement around keeping pets?" - 85 per cent of 1451 votes responded yes. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said

these early results were encouraging. "We know that so far the overwhelming majority of respondents to the written survey have been tenants (about 76 per cent), so to see this feedback for the government is encouraging," she said. "Now, we really need to hear from landlords and property managers so that all parties to the rental experience are heard. "We are urging our members to participate and share their experiences." Changes to the laws are expected to be introduced in 2019. ●

TRAVELLING SCULPTURES UNVEILED Shoppers have been admiring visiting works of art in Rose City Shoppingworld in recent days. Jessica Rabbit, Arnie 'Stag' Schwarzenegger and Pamela 'Poodle' Anderson were created by Sydney and New York-based based contemporary public artists husband-and-wife team Gillie and Marc Schattner, with the sculptures currently on a national tour. Rose City Shoppingworld marketing manager Louise de Lissa said when the centre's redevelopment was completed earlier this year it was "our aim to create a space for specific events which would draw additional customers to the centre". "This exhibit is a perfect opportunity to encourage new and additional visitation," Louise said. "It is an opportunity for locals and visitors to experience an exhibition they would normally have to travel to a metro area to see."

The team: Rose City Shoppingworld centre manager Jason Gard, marketing manager Louise de Lissa, administration officer Lauren Smith and security coordinator Kevan Beggs.

THE SPIN

WOMEN’S CRICKET TEAM A BELTER

TANNY TRIPLES AND CLASSIC Tannymorel Bowl’s club hosted their final triples game of the year recently and it was well supported by local and visiting players. Winners Marg Wright, Ron Philps and Pete Collis scored a 14-7 win in their first round game against Tom Seaniger, Phil Wagner and Max Holder. Skip Pete Collis wrapped up the win for the team scoring a 21-7 win over Walshy in the Skips only round. Runners up were Rob Parker, Joe Stratham, and Brian Brown while Tom Seaniger, Phil Wagner and Max Holder collected the unwanted Horse’s Butt award. The final round of the Tanny Classic has also been decided. After weeks of competition the results could hardly have been closer. Barb Donovan and Ash Coleman split the winner’s cheque when they finished the tied on 16 points. The race for second spot also resulted in the prize money being shared. Fritzy and Crocodile were just one point behind the winners with 15 points apeice. Hot on their heels were K.A (14) and Liam McKinney and Yvonne Reid (13). The Tanny Classic once again proved a popular format and it was great to see many junior bowlers involved. WINNING PARTNERSHIP The combination of Ian Pickering and Max Hunter proved a winning partnership in the 4BBB Stableford on the Delaney family golf day sponsored by the family in memory of their father Kev Delaney. Delaney is remembered as an accomplished sports person, a keen golfer and a mentor to junior golfers. Members of the Delaney family including Gem, Rod and Kerrin returned to Stanthorpe for the 2018 event. The winners returned a score of 47 two points clear of their nearest rivals. Pickering was in good touch and did the bulk of the scoring but was well supported by Hunter. The pair set up the win scoring 26 points on the freetimes.com.au

Winners of the Delaney Trophy Max Hunter and Ian Pickering - pictured reciving the Delaney Trophy with Kev Delaney's daughter and sons Dee O'Connell, Rod Delaney and Kerrin Delaney. front nine. The back nine was not quite as good but 21 points was enough to secure the win. There were no shortage of scores of 45 and after a detailed count back Darryl Boekholt and Neta Thouard were declared runners up. Also finishing on 45 were Dave Burgess and Matt Burgess Matt and Nikki Waterworth. The team of Santo Cavallaro and Mike McAuliffe had the best front nine to Tom and Trish Fittock did best on the back nine. Annelle Batterham won the Ladies Approach shot at eight and Brendan Baker the Men’s at 13. Pins were collected by Brendan Barker (3), Alan Kerr (12) and Matt Waterworth (17). Pro-pins went to Rod Delaney at 1/10 and Matt Burgess collected the rest while. Matt Waterworth picked up collected the nest at the second hole. Neta Thouard held the ladies pin at 12 and Trish Fittock had best approach at 17. The December countdown begins in earnest on Saturday and play will be for the December monthly medal and putting competition, sponsored by the Stanthorpe Golf club. Following the day’s competition the club is holding their Christmas party and an open invitation is extended to all members. To assist with catering please RSVP by adding your names to the invitation sheet at the club. The 2018 winners of the Stanthorpe men’s and ladies “Golfer of the Year“ will be announced along with the club’s major trophy winners. BACK ON TOP Maryvale Condamine has cemented their spot at the top of the Condamine Cup premiership ladder in an outstanding performance the Maryvale batsmen dominated the Redbacks bowlers posting a massive 316 run total. It was a memorable innings for a couple of reason. Captain Paul Bourke scored a century his first for what he believes is a couple of seasons and secondly for the performance of an emerging star in the Bourke family line-up - teenager Lucy Bourke. Lucy B who has had a great deal of success in the junior ranks at club, regional and state level came to the wicket with her cousin Paul Bourke requiring 16 to score his ton. Undaunted the 13 year old faced Redbacks gun bowler Tyhe Clarkson. She handled the occasion beautifully blocking and taking a single as Paul reached his century. The youngest Bourke also proved a thorn in Redback’s side when they came in to bat. She showed plenty of talent and pace taking two wickets for seven runs as Redbacks were bundled out for a mere 67 in reply. It looks like there will be plenty of competition in the Bourke camp this season between father Michael and daughter Lucy. Michael scored 42 runs and finished bowling figures with 2/4. His daughter however claimed an important run out to go with her two wickets and a share the bragging rights.

Maryvale 316 (Paul Bourke 103; Mick Bourke 32 - Tyhe Clarkson 2/42; Daniel Bowles 2/49) Defeated Redbacks 67 (Dave Brady 15; Tyhe Clarkson 11: - Mick Bourke 2/4, Lucy Bourke 2/7) Colts 155 (Jacob Gross 55; Shaun O’Leary 29 - Jared Fearby 4/22, Lachlan Boal 3/16) Defeated by Wheatvale 7/156 (Col O’Brien 46; Carter Bilbrough 44- Shaun O’Leary 2/32, Matt Kiernan 1/3) Sovereign forfeited to Allora WIN FOR LYNAM Mark Lynam was back in the winner’s circle at Stanthorpe Sporters on Sunday after he edged out runner up Dave McPaul to claim the win. Dave Burgess who played well in Saturday’s 4BBB Stableford continued his good touch on claiming the Pin shots at 12 and 17. Burgess then topped off a good weekend by winning one of the two meat trays up for grabs. Terry Byrnes and Ray Thorn figured in the run downs and Dick Hilton held the Pro Pin, The remaining meat tray found its way home with runner up Dave McPaul. A reminder to all Sporters - to help get you into the Santa spirit, Sporters will be holding their Christmas party on December 16th. In the meantime Sporters the off this Sunday at their normal time of 7.30-8.00am - everyone is welcome to join the crew for a hit. EXCITING T20 IN STANTHORPE The first of the T20 rounds in the Stanthorpe cricket fixtures were played last weekend. Under lights on Friday night South’s took on Tenterfield at the CF White Oval and continued their winning form and now sit at the top of the competition table. Tenterfield won the toss and elected to bat setting Souths a run chase of 124. Alan Donges and Shaun Merchant opened for Tenterfield and pushed the score along to 33 before Merchant was dismissed off the bowling of Liam Lanza. Alan Donges was joined by Dave Fowler at the wicket. Fowler lasted only a few balls before he was dismissed for a duck by Harry Williams bring Adam Jennings (31) to the wicket. Jennings top scored side before he was run out by Harry Williams in the 18th over. Some tight bowling from Ben Staley forced the error as Tenterfield pushed for runs late in the innings. The innings closed with the visitors on 5/123. In a change at the top of the batting order youngster Harry Williams and Alexander Cameron opened for South’s. Williams followed up a good performance with the ball to score an unbeaten half century. His 50 runs came off 47 deliveries and was highlighted by some good running between the wickets.

His opening partner also played his part scoring 25 from 30 balls faced before being dismissed by Adam Jennings. The game looked to be evenly balanced with the score at 1/42 in the eighth over. Liam Lanza joined Williams at the wicket and the pair took the total to 81 before Lanza was dismissed by Daniel Potter bringing Captain Ben Staley to the crease. South’s required 42 runs from the remaining 28 deliveries. Staley cracked 18 runs off eight deliveries as he and Williams reached the target with an over and a ball to spare in an entertaining game. The second game of round was played on Saturday between Valleys and RSL. Valleys won the toss and set RSL a moderate run chase of 111. Andrew Middleton and Curtis Allen opened for Valleys before Middleton was caught by Sam Dowie off the bowling of Tom Garland with 21 runs on the board. Tom Garland had a pair shortly after when Cameron Crestani was out without troubling the scorer. Allen and Joshua Crestani added another 20 runs before Crestani fell to the bowling of Will Dowie. When Allen was dismissed for 23 it was left to the Captain Damian Anderson (20 off 24) and Stephen Martin (20 off 11) to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Most of the Valley’s batsmen got away to good starts but were unable to go on to a big score. Lindstrom added a handy 10 runs late in the innings but Valleys were out for 110 with an over remaining. Duane Lihou had a cameo performance with the ball bowling two overs late in the innings. Lihou finished with figures of 3/1 including a two wicket maiden. Tom Garland bowled well to the RSL top order and finished with 3/22. The required total looked easily within the grasp of the RSL batsmen but there were some nervous moments. RSL had 28 runs on the board after just three overs and looked to be cruising to a win before the loss of crucial wickets. The experience of Ross Lupton showed in the middle order as he steadied the innings. When Curtis Allen held a catch off the bowling of Cameron Crestani to dismiss Lupton for 34 RSL required just 11 runs for victory. The Valley bowlers pinned down the batsmen in the final overs but Dave Becker scored an important 13 runs off 16 balls before Christopher Duff hit the winning run in the 19th over. Sandra Stefanon, Damian Anderson and Stephen Martin each took two wickets for Valleys and Joshua Crestani was good in the field taking two catches.

The Indians have arrived in style and while the Aussies circle the wagons we had a small sample of things to come on Sunday, when the visitors levelled the three game T20 series at one apiece after game two was washed out. The Australians are improving but some poor shot selection let down too many of our batsmen. It is symptomatic of a lack of experience and shows we are lacking cricket smarts that can’t be coached. The shining light in Australian sport at the moment must surely be the Southern Stars - the Aussie Women’s Cricket team, who scored a comprehensive win over England in the final of the T20 Cup in Antigua on Sunday morning. It was not quite the polished display we have come to expect from the Australians in the field but still more than good enough to thump the old enemy. Although Warwick product Delissa Kimmince did not get a wicket in the final she played a big part the World Cup Win. After being named Player of the Series, Alyssa Healy surely has the bragging rights in the Healy/Starc household. This team has set the bar high. Their enjoyment of the game is there for all to see - something sadly lacking in the men’s side. Well done to the Southern Stars who are showing us all what it is to be winners, but more importantly good players and good sports. Casey
