New Communities | Gen Fyansford

An aerial concept image of Gen Fyansford's master-planned layout amid the attractive landscape of Fyansford.

Breath-taking views at Fyansford SOME of Geelong's finest views looking out over Queen's Park and toward the Barrabool hills have recently been auctioned with the launch of the Pinnacle Newtown release, part of the Gen Fyansford residential development. Gen Fyansford is the premium masterplanned residential and mixed use community located within the existing township of Fyansford on the western end of metropolitan Geelong. This latest release, Pinnacle Newtown is located in a prized position within the Gen Fyansford Estate. Marketed towards Geelong's high flyers looking for something quite unique within the Geelong area, the auctioning of these first prime blocks of the Pinnacle Newtown Release has captured a lot of interest. This is largely due to the fact this is a much sought after elevated position in the estate, coupled with the very generous block sizes ranging from 691sqm - 1,260sqm. Adding to the local interest was the fact the successful purchasers on the day were offered the opportunity of a helicopter ride, courtesy of Gen Fyansford. This was to experience the breathtaking views of the surrounding area, and highlight how close their new home will be to the Geelong CBD (around 10 minutes away) as well as the beautiful neighbouring waterfront. The Gen Fyansford project is currently being developed by ICD Property, a 18

SUMMER 2018-2019

Melbourne based property developer, in conjunction with Supalai, a Thai-based land developer. At the completion of the development, Gen Fyansford is expected to comprise around 1,000 lots complete with its own town centre offering a number of retail and commercial uses with immediate access to a grocery store. Gen Fyansford will also offer residents landscaped private parklands, a man-made

lake, children's playgrounds, and a number of walking and bicycle paths, as part of the rejuvenation and landscaping of Moorabool River. Speaking to Michael Mai, Managing Director of ICD Property, it's clear that care for the local surroundings is right at the forefront of planning for the Gen Fyansford community as a whole. "We are excited by opportunities presented by the natural amenity of

Fyansford," Michael says. "In creating a sustainable new community, a considerable proportion of our research and planning is focused on the protecting and working in harmony with the natural environment, particularly the rejuvenation of the Moorabool River and activation along the riverfront." Local builders | Malishev

The stunning style of Malishev's Madison.

Malishev's award-winning style THE sleek architectural lines of the Madison display home design recently added another industry accolade for Geelong-based home builders over the past 50 years, the Malishev family. Their stylish and newly-built Madison dominated as Best Display Home in the $500K-$750K category for the 2018 MBAV Excellence in Housing Awards earlier this year. Malishev has now won more than 100 national, state and regional awards for its unique designs, attention to detail and high quality homes. Established locally in 1985, Q by Malishev delivers high quality and great value homes with a complete custom design service. The Madison is all about family living with clever zoning around a magnificent central communal indoor/outdoor living area. Inspired by mid-century architecture, the Madison caters for the most discerning buyers’ modern expectations. Its northfacing open plan living is designed for entertaining family and friends in style. Sales manager Luke Walters said the 2018 MBAV award achievement was still a thrill for the Malishev team. “It’s always nice to be recognised in the industry by the Master Builders Association of Victoria,” he says. “Our two new signature homes, the Mayfair and Madison, are both open for display and have been well received with good numbers through to view them,” Luke says. “We only had one finished at the time to enter this year’s awards but we will certainly put the Mayfair up next year.” The Mayfair is an appealing Hampton’s GEELONG COASTnew homes&land

inspired home which takes timeless classic style to new heights. It offers charm and character and interior luxury yet has been adapted to suit the Australian lifestyle. “Q for Malishev offers clients over and above build standards with the company priding itself on high end finishes and clever functional homes.” “We offer individualised architecture and understand people’s expectations for the finishes achieved.” Q for Malishev builds primarily in Geelong, Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula areas with projects extending mainly between Little River and Anglesea. The company also focuses on residential knockdown and rebuild projects in existing Geelong suburbs. This is becoming extremely popular with older homes amongst Newtown, Belmont and Highton, for those who love their current address but would like a fresh new home to live in. Beyond its designer range homes, they offer custom homes, split level homes, acreage homes, unit developments and specialise in building on sloping sites. Q by Malishev has an extensive range of pre-designed plans available to suit all blocks and budgets. The company can take care of everything from initial concept designs through to permits, construction and interior design. Their homes not only stand the test of time but are also known for achieving above-market resale value when sold on. The Q Display Centre is now open 1pm to 5pm daily at 289-291 Torquay Rd, Grovedale. Malishev’s office is at 121 Myers St, Geelong. "As home-hunters snap up 200 lots to consolidate Warralily as the best-selling estate in Geelong. "With construction of the first stages now underway it's amazing to see how the neighbourhood will take shape, especially now that the boundaries of the Grange Village Park are being defined, you get an amazing sense of the scale that will be delivered." The stunning interior of Sinclair Homes' Skye.

Small builder a big winner Sinclair’s Building Concepts (Sinclair Homes) is a small local construction company on the Surf Coast specialising in quality custom-built homes and architectural designs. Director Aaron Sinclair scored acclaim with his first entry in the Master Builders Association of Victoria 2018 Awards, winning Best Custom Home in the $300,000 to $400,000 range for his first display home, Skye. A 34-year-old who has been in the building industry all his working life, Aaron is passionate about what he does. “I’ve been building since I was 15. I’m young but I was taught by great old school builders and take great pride in my work and am there throughout the process,” he says. The Sinclair Homes difference is that Aaron is a carpenter by trade and is on the tools at every job. He never compromises on the quality and his passion shines through, earning him a strong reputation in the field and his status as a registered builder. “We’ve run our own business this past three years and I’ve handed quite a few homes over now with not one call-back from clients. I do pride myself on that.” Aaron says Sinclair Homes only uses the best local trades and suppliers to ensure quality products and a meticulous finish. “We specialise in new homes, custom

New Communities | Villawood Properties

Villawood putting community first GEELONG’S new-home buyers have become more discerning and sharper about what they buy, says industry leader Villawood Properties. A tighter market, stricter lending, titling delays and a quality product have all become front of mind with buyers keener than ever to ensure they get better bang for the buck. Villawood Properties, presently selling a market-leading 40 per cent of land at the burgeoning Armstrong growth corridor between Geelong and Torquay, is offering the best on all fronts. It is also offering premium lots at the prestigious Wandana community above Highton as well as the best of town and country in its new Coridale community in Lara’s booming western precinct. “Enquiry is very strong across all Villawood Geelong projects, with campers being at most of Armstrong’s releases, a spokesperson for Villawood said. “Demand for Wandana is high due to its exclusive location and our new Coridale project, without any formal marketing campaign launch, is seeing very strong numbers due to interest in Lara’s new precinct structure plan. Villawood’s offers are in stark contrast to those of other developers across the Geelong region. Others are facing title delays up to 27 months where Villawood’s staged releases have kept titling to around 12 months. Others are adding to land prices by offering builders kickbacks to recommend their developments. Villawood offers no such kickbacks, instead providing dedicated lots to its builder partners. Villawood sets aside lots for care workers in the community, with a $10,000 price cut

First-class facilities such as residents' clubs set Villawood estates apart from other developments. as well, helping ensure they have access to the market. Villawood discourages investment speculators, to guard against price hikes and to help safeguard the integrity of its familyoriented communities. Importantly, Villawood offers the best quality communities - with industry awards to prove it. Its Amstrong Mount Duneed holds the current Urban Development Institute of Australia’s Best Masterplanned Community title.

When it comes to building quality, forever-home communities, Villawood is simply the best. Its parks and trails, its playgrounds and residents clubs, its environmental, heritage and its sustainability initiatives all dovetail into creating communities where families can live and grow in healthy, active surroundings. For Villawood, it’s all about community, care, quality and affordability.

Local Builders | Simonds Homes

Simonds Homes is designing new houses with a focus on wellbeing.

Simonds leading healthier living SIMONDS Homes is taking up the next great challenge in building - designing homes that actively fuse health, nature and science to promote home wellness. The Simonds Homes design philosophy has always been anchored in a simple yet profoundly important belief: that it is both the form and the function of homes that creates a foundation for good health. Every home built by Simonds Homes in Victoria now includes the first tier of the Delos-designed DARWIN Home Wellness Intelligence platform designed to bring the best of the natural world into your home and daily living. With increased urbanisation across Australia, many people now spend up to 90 per cent of their time indoors. The DARWIN platform is designed to address negative impacts of unseen ‘health concerns’ commonly occurring within the home, such as poor air and water quality and lighting that disrupts natural sleep patterns. Potential home buyers are invited to walk through the favourite Simonds home designs, and speak with sales consultants about home wellness while experiencing the DARWIN Home Wellness Intelligence benefits first-hand. DARWIN’s holistic and responsive intelligence passively promotes wellness in the home and mitigates the environmental factors that can impact our health, happiness and wellbeing. Blackout blinds eliminate outdoor light pollution and create an environment that supports deep, restful sleep. Then a calibrated dawn simulation lighting system allows you to wake naturally to balance your circadian cycles with sequences that mimic natural sunlight. Bright energising bathroom mirrors and bright white interior lighting in the daytime helps to combat fatigue and regain focus with an energising environment to stimulate your mind and body and empower you to take on the day. Climate control programming helps you relax and unwind when you come home creating a welcoming environment for a 32

relaxing evening. Simonds Homes’ Wellness Intelligence system allows your home to work for you by helping to prepare your body to sleep, wake, work, relax or play. Your home continuously monitors air quality and indoor environmental conditions while smart ventilation and responsive purification automatically remove air pollutants from your home when and where it matters most. Meanwhile, in-built water filtration reduces impurities so residents stay hydrated with clean, great tasting water. Delos CEO and Founder Paul Scialla says years of experience and extensive research

in a ‘well’ home should be a right, not a luxury. “We saw an immediate opportunity to support Delos in developing the DARWIN platform and then adopt it because of our customers’ increasing interest in, and demand for, healthier, more sustainable homes. “Our partnership will make DARWIN accessible to millions of everyday Australians. That brings with it incredible potential to not only improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and families, but whole communities too.” ●

show indoor environments can have a profound impact - either negative or positive - on people’s wellness. “The DARWIN platform was developed in conjunction with experts in the building sciences, health sciences and behavioural sciences, as well as architects and with advice from the Simonds Homes team.” Simonds Homes CEO Kelvin Ryan says the Delos partnership would put Australia at the forefront of the global wellness movement - currently, a $3.4 trillion industry. “DARWIN will be included in the base package of all Simonds Homes built in Victoria - at no additional cost to customers - reflecting the company’s belief that living

Strap - Industry News | Chiefs and grants

Local CEO joining Master REBECCA Casson will take over as Master Builders’ chief executive officer after six years leading Committee for Geelong. Ms Casson takes over the role early next year from Radley de Silva, who was CEO for five years and was with Master Builders a total of 17 years. Master Builders president Melanie Fasham in October announced the appointment of Ms Casson. “Construction is critical to the state’s economy, being the largest full time employer in Victoria, supporting more than 280,000 jobs,” Ms Fasham said. “This appointment will result in Master Builders continuing to expand our leadership role representing the interests

of the industry and the people who work in it, as well as further contributing to the industry through our extensive training program.“ Ms Casson has more than 20 years’ experience working for government, industry and not-for-profit organisations in Australia, the UK and USA. “Her extensive history of advocacy and outstanding organisational skills make her an exceptional appointment,” Ms Fasham said. Committee for Geelong chair Dan Simmonds congratulated Ms Casson on her new role and thanked her for increasing the influence of the committee during her six years as CEO.

“The Committee has achieved terrific outcomes during Rebecca’s tenure and we are very proud to have had such a truly credentialed individual driving the organisation during this critical period in Geelong’s development,” Mr Simmonds said. “I think that is a great reflection of the way Rebecca is regarded by influential figures in business and the broader community.” Ms Casson “worked tirelessly” to “drive a visionary future for Geelong” through advocacy campaigns and the Winning from Second initiative, Mr Simmonds said. ●

The recipients of $12,000 in grants from the inaugural Ashbury Community Fund.

Soaring local values show region leading the state FIFTEEN community groups in southern Geelong and Torquay received grants totalling $12,000 at the inaugural Ashbury Community Fund presentation on 14 November. Representatives of Geelong’s business community and council attended the awards at Dennis Family Corporation’s Ashbury Estate. Dennis Family Group managing director Grant Dennis and Geelong councillor Ron Nelson made the presentations to the notfor-profit groups that successfully applied for funding. Since establishing its Community Fund initiative in 2002, Dennis Family Corporation has distributed more than $600,000 in grants across various residential estates in Victoria and southeast Queensland. “The establishment of the Ashbury Community Fund has enabled us to extend the reach of our support into the Armstrong Creek neighbourhood where our Ashbury development is located,” Mr Dennis said. Eligibility for funding extended to not-for-profit groups in Armstrong Creek, Grovedale, Mt Duneed and Torquay. “We were very pleased with the quantity and variety of applications we received,” Mr Dennis said. An independent judging panel allocated $500 and $1000 grants to Grovedale Toy GEELONG COASTnew homes&land

Library, Torquay Surf Life Saving Club’s nipper program, Mt Duneed Pony Club, Neighborhood Watch Armstrong Creek, Connewarre Fire Brigade and other groups. Mr Dennis said Ashbury would become home to approximately 4000 people over

the next decade and that his family had always felt it important to support the areas where its business operates. “The annual Community Fund concept was introduced within our family business as a practical way of giving back to the

communities we create,” he explained. “Over the years, we’ve provided funding to many different organisations to help make their projects possible. “It is very satisfying for us to now be able to support so many worthy organisations in the local neighbourhood around Ashbury.” After a very positive response to its launch this year, the Ashbury Community Fund would become an annual initiative, Mr Dennis said. “We encourage anyone who missed out on funding this year to make sure they lodge an application in 2019.” Grovedale Toy Library’s Caroline Salmon was thrilled to accept $1000 in support of its active families program. “As the Grovedale Toy Library is run completely by member volunteers and funded solely by memberships and fundraising, one of the biggest challenges we have is ensuring we have enough toys to meet the growing demand of the local community,” she said. “This money means we can now replace many of our older and most popular toys with new ones, and we can’t thank the Dennis Family Corporation enough for helping us make this a reality.” More details on this year’s presentations and information on the 2019 Ashbury Community Fund can be located on the Ashbury website at ashburyestate.com.au. Building Success | Ninedots

Ninedots directors Steven and Rebecca Hall connect the dots for homebuyers.

Expert support for a seamless build WITH build opportunities expanding rapidly across regional Victoria, more and more homebuyers are now uncovering the complexities surrounding new home construction. As building a new home becomes increasingly expensive and at times more complex, more people want to be in control of their build process and are less tolerant of poor outcomes and finishes. Savvy Geelong homebuyers and investors are increasingly seeking the support of Ninedots Build Advocates to ensure a stress free build. So, what is a build advocate? And how can they assist you when building a new home or investment property? A build advocate, or a buyer's advocate for new home builds, is an industry professional who negotiates, handles and manages the build process on a client's behalf. Ninedots is Geelong's leading team of build advocates who provide their clients with the inside track on all aspects of new home construction including contract clauses, builder selection, hidden catches and known pitfalls so their clients can expertly navigate the new build process with ease. Ninedots was established in 2013 to provide genuine, unbiased support to buyers looking to build a new home or investment property. Ninedots directors, husband and wife Rebecca and Steven Hall, assist buyers to navigate the complex construction process from concept to completion, allowing for a seamless build experience with an optimal build outcome. They help clients to select the right block of land, the best fit builder and the right terms in which to enter into, to ensure the right final product. Ninedots can secure favourable terms across pricing and inclusions while coordinating and managing the entire build process. During construction they provide site inspections to maintain quality, and 40

Ninedots thoroughly understand the construction process providing the specialist know how required for a successful build. "We understand all elements of new home construction and won't just work from your wishlist, but will guide you and work out how to optimise your selections based on our experience, " Rebecca says. "This valuable insight saves clients time, money and stress in the long run - lessening their chances of making ill-informed building decisions." Ninedots have no direct relationship to any one builder ensuring they remain client focussed. Having said that, many builders enjoy working with Ninedots because they streamline the build process in a collaborative relationship to achieve the

best possible outcome for clients. Metricon's Regional Manager Simon Taylor says "Ninedots have been great to work with, as they simplify the build process for clients making it an enjoyable build experience". "We know clients that Ninedots introduce are perfectly suited to our product so the process really is seamless." "Clients say it helps to have someone with the confidence, emotional detachments and knowledge representing them throughout the build." "We say, if you can delegate the stress of new home construction to an expert who works for your best interests, why not?" The best news is Ninedots is uniquely structured to ensure quality assurance and construction support is accessible to all new build customers even those building for the first time or those

building on a tight budget. "Although a lot of our clients are professionals who engage our services to save time and stress, we wanted to create a model that was affordable for first home buyers and those building on a tight budget, as often they're the ones who need us the most" Rebecca says. "Unbiased, totally impartial and always on your side, Ninedots is a scalable service available on a pick up, put down basis providing support from as little as $220." "We believe there's immense value in bridging the knowledge gap between builders and buyers and so at Ninedots, that's what we do." "Fortnightly site visits ensure builders deliver on all outcomes and we keep clients informed every step of the way in an easy to understand manner," Steven says. Wonder Windows | Brax Blinds

Apps are revolutionising motorised awnings and blinds in modern living spaces like this one.

How far can technology take us? CAL STEWART [Brax Blinds sales manager ]

IF you watched the most recent series of The Block, you would know that all sorts of smart home automation featured across each of the apartments, but probably the biggest leap in technology we've seen was the introduction of voice control. The convenience of automation, particularly for items such as motorised blind or awnings, just got even simpler. Now you can control your window coverings with voice commands via Amazon Alexa or Google Home devices. Imagine that: asking someone to turn off the lights or open and close your blinds for you and it actually happens. No more nagging your partner or the kids! How does it work? Current voice activation systems available in Australia operate through IFTTF (if this, then that) technology. IFTTT is a free web-based platform that launched in 2011 with the aim of "putting the internet to work for you". Basically, it gets all of your apps and devices talking to each other and uses 'applets' to trigger actions; hence "if this, then that." By talking to either your Google Home or Amazon Alexa, you can use simple commands such as "Alexa trigger good 42

SUMMER 2018-2019

morning" or "ok Google good night" to trigger actions for your motorised window coverings or turn your lights on and off. Can it be retro-fitted to existing homes? The good news here is yes it can. If you already have internal or external blinds that are automated with Somfy and operate via remote control, we can quite easily get you set-up. The Connexoon Window RTS app is the simplest way to control your motorised window coverings. Enjoy the experience of controlling your Somfy-powered motorised solutions from your smartphone and maximise the many benefits they provide such as natural light, privacy and convenience. You are now in control of all your Somfy RTS motorised products such as blinds, curtains, awnings and external screens. Then you simply link up with your Amazon Alexa or Google Home and set up your commands. What if I don't have automated blinds? There's probably never been a better time to invest in motorised awnings or blinds for your home or business. Motorised blinds add a level of ease and convenience but there are also other benefits that come with having automatic blinds beyond just the comfort. Awnings and blinds can be an essential

addition to your home or business for energy savings as well as improved security. Your windows release a lot of the temperature from within the home - heat in the winter and coolness in the summer. Studies show that windows lose as much as 75 percent of energy compared to a wall space of similar size and shape. Internal blinds and external window coverings help reduce solar heating during the summer and heat loss during the summer. In addition, interior blinds that move via automation make your home less of a target. Burglars look for unoccupied, easy targets. Even when you're not at home, your blinds can move up and down on a set schedule to similar activity within the home. Motorised blinds may sound complicated, but that's really not the case. As most are controlled via remote control, all that is required is a power supply. This can be as simple as a power-point nearby or if you prefer to have the wiring concealed, we can advise you on the best way to do so. If you can't get power to the window, there is also a range of wire-free or battery operated options that are also compatible with voice control. And the best part of asking Alexa to close the blinds - provided you give her clear instructions - she never argues or complains! â—?

Hybrid innovation for Carpet Court FOR 41 years Northside Carpet Court & Hoppers Crossing Carpet Court has been a leader in the local flooring industry. Northside’s team prides itself on delivering the very best in flooring, rugs, blinds and carpets. And while good old-fashioned customer service remains a cornerstone of the business, Northside Carpet Court has also moved with the times. “The product during the last 12 months that’s really blitzing them is called ‘hybrid’,” says Northside’s Ron May. “It’s a wood-plastic composite. It’s completely waterproof, very tough and hard wearing. “It’s quiet to walk on, warm to walk on and is perfect for families with kids and pets.” Ron’s excitement at the new technology is evident. “You drop a can of baked beans on a timber floor and you will dent it,” he says. “Drop a can of baked beans on a ceramic tile floor and you’ll chip or damage it. “But drop it on this, and it won’t even scratch the surface. It’s so high-impact resilient. They’re tough, they look better and they’re easier to maintain.” With showrooms at North Geelong and Hoppers Crossing, Northside Carpet Court also offers amazing installation services. “We pick good-quality tradies who deliver good-quality work,” Ron says. Carpet technology has also come a long way. A new style of carpet is practically unstainable. It’s called Solution Dyed Nylon or affectionately known as SDN. “You can drop undiluted household bleach on this and it won’t even change colour,” Ron says. Of course, customer service is still high on the agenda at Northside Carpet Court. “We’ve been going for 41 years and are family operated and owned,” Ron says. “We take a lot of pride in delivering the best customer service around. 44

Local Suppliers | Buildpro

Highton couple Arja and Ari Suomalainen offer unique building supplies and excellent support at Buildpro.

Buildpro ‘power’ supplies locals AFTER 30 years as a sales manager in the brick industry, former architectural draftsman Ari Suomalainen and wife Arja jumped at the chance to open Geelong’s first Buildpro franchise. “They’re probably the most professional building and landscape supplier that I’ve ever seen and worked with,” the store’s sales and distribution manager says. “They’ve got great buying power and an excellent supplier network.” The company approached Ari and Arja last year to open the one-stop-shop for landscaping and building supplies at Grovedale. The Highton locals opened the store in June and still have a couple of displays to add to the store’s already immense range. He and Arja, who has worked in the local building industry for 23 years, have already established a good customer base among Geelong builders. The store’s range has been one of the reasons for the couple’s success to date. “We have got a lot of exclusive products that only Buildpro sell - ranging from wall cladding to unique paving,” Ari says. The couple, co-owner David Hazle and customer service officer Kate Douglas have more than 90 years’ experience combined selling building products. “We specialise in the supply of a wide range of bricks, blocks, pavers and cladding material, with more products being offered regularly,” Ari says. “Our stunning collection of wall cladding products will allow you to create contemporary or classic designs with the distinctive look.” Buildpro also offers clay bricks, composite decking, natural stone cladding, landscaping products, like artificial grass and retaining walls, and other accessories, at its purpose built showroom. A small sample of Buildpro's wide variety of pavers. “We’re basically a one-shot shop for landscaping and building,” Ari says. Buildpro has the answer for any outdoor needs, from natural stone to pavers in a vast array of designs. “A wide variety of colours and styles are available to create a timeless and natural look that will enhance any property,” Ari says. As a former architectural draftsman, Ari knows what builders want from a design perspective. “They look for service,” he says. “Price is very important, but service and after sales support are extremely important.”

Buildpro’s 18 stores around Victoria and NSW and the company’s supply chain gives builders extra piece of mind, Ari says. The store is also perfect for builders looking to send in their clients to help them choose colour concepts and get advice, he says. After 30 years as a brick supplier, Ari is expert in wall-related products. “As part of our standing as a leader in exterior building supplies, here at Buildpro we also pride ourselves in being a premium brick supplier,” he says. “We’re proud to stock only the best quality products that are made by leading

manufacturers such as Selkirk, Krause and Advance Bricks & Pavers.” Ari’s father and brothers have also worked in the building industry. “Building runs in our blood,” he says. Ari and Arja look forward to holding a big open day once the store’s final display is finished. “We’ll invite all the landscapers, builders, mums and dads,” he says. The Highton grandparents recently celebrated their granddaughter’s christening and are long-time Geelong residents. Ari also enjoys fishing and playing bass in a local band. ● SUMMER 2018-2019

Giving Back | Bank of Melbourne

Design concepts of the new therapy hardcourt area at Kids Plus Foundation's new centre for Therapy, Research and Training at Deakin University's Waurn Ponds campus.

Grassroots charity starts at home IMPROVING community life and supporting local organisations through charitable donations is a key focus for the Bank of Melbourne. Since 2013, the Bank of Melbourne Foundation has donated almost $3 million in grants to more than 100 small charitable organisations who receive little or no government funding. Every dollar raised by the Foundation goes directly to Victorians who need a helping hand and offers these life-changing services: • Scholarships for disadvantaged kids through Western Chances and Ardoch Youth Foundation. • Helping homeless young people get on their feet through HoMie. • Making sure a new mum can give her baby a safe pram and toys even if she can't afford to buy them - St Kilda Mums. • Helping disadvantaged women find work and keep it, through Fitted for Work. • Providing nutritious meals to people who have fallen on tough times through Fareshare. Research conducted by Bank of Melbourne in its Victorian Communities report 2018 found that 95 per cent of Victorians believe there's a way to improve the way of life for those in their community. Half of those surveyed volunteered their time to support charities or causes, most commonly education and schools (13 per cent). Proving that Victorians are proud and parochial, the research also found that in the last 12 months, 93 per cent of Victorians surveyed feel proud when their community comes together for a cause. The Bank of Melbourne's team actively engages with their local communities to support the events, festivals and causes that are important to locals. This includes regional executive Brendan Grenfell and local branch managers Elaine Sweeney and her team in Geelong, as well as Steve Vangelovski and his team in Waurn Ponds. Key local projects recently backed by Bank of Melbourne Foundation funding include Barwon Health's Kids Appeal and the Kids Plus Foundation. Bank of Melbourne's regional team has partnered with Barwon Health across the 2018/19 financial year to support 50

Barwon Health Foundation's acting executive director Zoe Waters says that 'in addition to the Bank of Melbourne's generous donation to our Kids Appeal, the team also committed to purchasing a mattress warmer for the Maternity Services Department. "This vital piece of equipment keeps newborns body temperature stable. They are commonly used for babies born to diabetic mothers to allow them to head home sooner," she says. "The Bank of Melbourne donation tally to date is an incredible $7500. These funds go directly toward supporting patient comfort and care within our region and we are beyond thankful." Bank of Melbourne has also donated $22,000 to the Kids Plus Foundation to help install a therapy hard court area at its

planned centre in Geelong. Based in Geelong, the Kids Plus Foundation was founded in 2003 by parents of children with special needs, therapists and concerned community members. Kids Plus Foundation specialises in interventions across the life-span for babies, children and young people with cerebral palsy and similar neurological disorders. Through physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, music therapy and social work programs and supports, Kids Plus provides family-focused services including assessment, therapy and family support for early treatment and specific intervention strategies to improve abilities across a range of developmental areas. Chief Executive Shaun Cannon says Kids Plus Foundation's new centre for Therapy, Research and Training in Geelong will be located at Deakin University's Waurn Ponds campus. "Construction is starting late 2018 and the centre is due to open to clients in

January 2020.This is an important project funded by the community and the Bank of Melbourne is one our valued donors. "All are great contributors to what is going to be an important asset." In addition to the Bank of Melbourne's contribution, the $3m centre has been funded by philanthropic grants, local community fundraising efforts and $1.47m from the Federal Government's Building Better Regions Fund. A key philanthropic grant of $750,000 was received from the Anthony Costa Foundation. Land for the centre has been provided on a no-cost basis by Deakin University under a 20-year lease arrangement with Kids Plus Foundation. The centre is a purpose-built facility providing therapy programs to 250 children and their families across the Greater Barwon region and beyond. ● GEELONG COASTnew homes&land

Electrical Specialists | Geelong Appliance Spares

Top service, 30 years and counting SPECIALTY electrical and whitegoods parts supplier Geelong Appliance Spares is celebrating 30 years in business this spring. The family firm, owned and operated by David and Jannine Dolley is now handily located in North Geelong with loads of onsite parking, so customers can literally pull up to the roller door. It's been an incredible journey for the Dolley clan, expanding from selling only elements and light globes at Geelong Lamp & Element Shoppe in the Centrepoint Arcade from mid-1988. After many years at their Mercer Street premises, they relocated to North Geelong a little over one year ago. Jannine said several family members including David's late father Ben have been intrinsic to the business' success, customer service focus and building a fine industry reputation over the years. "David realised that there was a need in the market place for appliance spare parts," she said. "And in 1990 we became authorised spare parts distributors for Electrolux whitegoods covering well known household brands like Kelvinator, Simpson, Westinghouse, Chef and Hoover." Demand for Geelong Appliance Spares' expertise is mainly led by the service industry and retail customers, with website orders now taking a small but increasing slice of the market. With David's electrical wholesaling background and Jannine's experience in banking and distribution they form a great team along with three staff members in accounts, stores and customer service. "David has a phenomenal memory for spare parts and part numbers," Jannine said. "And if people bring in a sample he

"We've about 5000 parts in stock and if we haven't got it here, David tries hard to source things for people from all over." Geelong Appliance Spares supplies parts to the Geelong, Surfcoast and Bellarine area.

They also distribute parts for Electrolux throughout Western Victoria as far as Portland. "We've been running the website platform for a couple of years now and can send parts anywhere in Australia - with a lot of orders to Queensland, Tasmania and

Western Australia," Jannine said. So if you need the right parts to complete repairs now is the time to act. For friendly advice and service, phone 5278 7701, visit www.geelongappliancespares. com.au or call in to Unit 3/156 Victoria Street, North Geelong. â—?

Giving Back | KYO

Handing out the meal packs.

KYO’s Hope for India’s homeless JUSTIN FLYNN KYO has been buying and importing goods from India for more than 13 years and after many trips back and forth, Paul Taylor and John Sutton decided it was time to give something back. They began Future Hope, an initiative to help feed some of Delhi’s homeless. “They do more to look after their homeless than what we do,” Paul Taylor explains. “They do what they can, but there just isn’t enough to go around.” Future Hope supplies a weekly meal for around 250 to 300 homeless people in the Indian capital, which has a population of around 26 million. “I’ve been out a few times on the meal run and it’s pretty inspiring - they’re desperate for fresh water and food,” Paul says. “It was very daunting the first time. I went out on the very first run and they are so desperate they were clamouring over the vehicle. It was impossible to get them to queue up so we had to keep the van moving from spot to spot. “But now they know of us and they know we are coming every week and it’s a lot more orderly. “People were asking for multiple meals and we thought it might have been because they were greedy, but it was to give to people who couldn’t come to the van.” Future Hope prepares 300 meals consisting of rice and vegetables and fresh drinking water each Wednesday and delivers every one of them the following day. In winter, they will also deliver beanies, scarves and blankets. KYO Yoga has a yoga class where participants make a donation. All donations go to Future Hope. You can also donate at GEELONG COASTnew homes&land

The brightly coloured Future Hope van. KYO itself. Every cent of KYO’s delivery fees go straight to the charity as well. “We know we’re not even scratching the surface,” Paul says. “There are thousands and thousands of people who are homeless over there, but it feels good to give something back. “They are inspiring people. They don’t seem to complain. I get inspired by them. They seem to find something good in every day whether it’s playing a game of cricket or getting that meal, they are just grateful for

the good things so it grounds me and makes me appreciate what we’ve got here. “It teaches you to be grateful for everything whether it’s fresh water, a roof over your heads or food in your stomach. Three essential things we take for granted.” KYO also employs half a dozen divorced or widowed women, who are often outcasts in Indian society. “We may as well get people who haven’t got jobs to do this so they make a range of necklaces and bracelets and we sell those in the shop and all the money goes back to the

charity. “It gives five or six women a couple of day’s work each week which really makes a difference to their lives.” KYO (pronounced key-o) started more than 20 years ago and has grown from one small shed to three huge warehouses selling furniture and homewares from all around the world. It’s almost a tourist destination in itself such is its popularity. You can find KYO at 26 Smithton Grove. See kyo.net.au/ or find them on Facebook. ● SUMMER 2018-2019
