‘Ghost town’ plea By Cam Lucadou-Wells A councillor is calling for Dandenong's parkingmeter regime to be relaxed, with parts of the 'revitalised' precinct resembling a ghost town. Traders in parts of Lonsdale Street are reporting a mass exodus of businesses, vacant shops and long stretches of empty parking bays. In the past year, businesses have deserted Lonsdale Street's northern precinct near Boyd Lane for livelier parts of central Dandenong. Such as Commonwealth Bank and Westpac branches, Del Real Estate, McLennans Real Estate and a Tattslotto shop. This close strip of sites largely remain vacant. Ashton Ashokkumar, of Creston Real Estate, called for discount or free parking - and an extension of the one-hour parking limit in the empty bays outside his shop. Customers stung by red-hot parking tickets weren't coming back, he said. With trading life sucked out of the area, there's instead a prevalence of drunks, swarms of filthy seagulls, property damage and putrid rubbish, particularly in Boyd Lane. "The whole business area is suffering," Mr Ashokkumar said. "We should do a free-parking trial and at
least see how it goes." PostNet proprietor Ghajan Ghaneshan says his business's front glass door has been shattered several times. He has been broken into three times in 2018 and wants to get out of his lease. "I'm depressed about it. My business is going down," he says. His premises backs onto Boyd Lane. At night, the rear garage has been torched as well as blighted by drug litter, copulation and human vomit, excrement and urine, Mr Ghaneshan said. Star News observed the charred exterior as well as a fishy stench, seagull guano and numerous piles of rubbish fouling the alley. Cr Jim Memeti said he was going to move for parking changes to help resuscitate quiet areas in central Dandenong. "A lot of people have been telling me why is Noble Park free, why is Springvale free and in Dandenong they have to pay. "Maybe we could introduce free parking between 7am to midday, or another alternative." Cr Memeti said parking officers could perhaps allow a five or 10 minute "grace period" for parking offences. GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region
Business with good cheer By Rebecca Skilton Evolve All Stars is helping athletes of all ages to cheer their hearts out. Founded by sisters Ascha Boag and Gemma and Bronte Miles, the Cranbourne West business has powered through its infancy, overcome stereotypes and burst onto the cheerleading scene in just under two years. So successful has the journey been that Evolve recently took home the 2018 Casey Cardinia Business Award for the Best New Business. While 27-year-old Gemma and 23-yearold Bronte head the coaching team with more than 15 years’ coaching experience between them, 29 year-old Ascha steers the business side of the company. Prior to Evolve All Stars, the three sisters were working and studying separately, before deciding to join forces. But unlike many siblings, the three sisters had no worries entering into business together. “Our core values are all similar so in a lot of ways it’s easier because you’re all siblings so you’ve all been brought up the same. When your core values are the same, it’s just about bouncing ideas off each other,” Gemma said. Aware that most businesses fail within the first year, the trio spent around 18 months planning their new endeavour, wanting to give themselves “the best chance“ at success. Making sure they had enough cash flow to sustain themselves for a year, they even predicted their worst case scenario in order to be fully prepared. Following thorough research, the sisters de-
cided that the best location for their endeavour - and local children - was the expanding suburb of Cranbourne West. “We looked at growth areas and we found (that Cranbourne West) was rapidly growing and while there were a lot of families, there wasn’t as many activities because it’s such a new area,” Ascha said. “So we thought it was a good combination of having more kids being able to come and the kids not having as much to do ... and (through cheer) kids learn about resilience, they learn about winning and losing and about not letting their team down. It’s about commitment and hard work. They learn that the more the hard work they put in, the more they’ll get out. And I think they’re really good skills to have for the future.” The sisters then selected a warehouse within a developing industrial estate that met their safety and equipment specifications, and employed the help of their engineering and finance experienced partners to build and sustain the gym. Despite their success, the girls still found that there was one ongoing challenge: the stereotypes surrounding cheerleading. “We actually found that one of the hardest things was getting over the stereotype,” Bronte said. “Because we found that a lot of people didn’t understand what (all star cheer) was. So I feel like one of our biggest challenges is getting people through the door but once they’re here they realise how huge it is and that it’s not what they thought."

The place to be for a generation with smashed avo By Brendan Rees Australia’s leading demographer told a crowded business breakfast “Our culture is continually changing and in business you need to read those changes“. Bernard Salt, a former partner at KPMG, and a well-known writer, media personality and business advisor, was the guest speaker at the Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast at the Cranbourne Turf Club on Wednesday 28 November. He routinely appears as a commentator on a variety of business/current affair TV shows in Australia. In business, Mr Salt’s specialties lie in tracking and understanding Australian demographics and the rest of the world. Mr Salt spoke about the evolution of consumer cultures, how the most recent generation will fit into today’s business world and how companies can get the most out of their customer base and employees. “Over the last 10 years while you have been in business, conducting your life in this region, this region has added a 144,000 people; a city the size of Geelong in 10 years,” he said. “Here is a place to be in business,” he added. With the “bucket load of kids” to come, he says people “need to be in child minding, you need to be in kindergarten provision, you need to be in obstetrics, you need a big hospital I would’ve have thought - it’s not rocket science.” According to the latest census data, Mr Salt says Dandenong, which was “once the great manufacturing heartland of the Australian continent” offered 66,000 jobs - up 12,000 from 2011 to 2016. Logistics and warehousing made up the bulk of jobs, he said. “Dandenong is reinventing itself” and “adaptable to the new reality.“ “It’s undulating land, house and land packages with a three or a four in front of it, can access to the sixth largest job centre on the Australian continent - that is adding 12,000 jobs every five years. “What else could you possibly want? What

not the Perth CBD, it’s Perth’s airport and precinct.” Mr Salt’s unique skill is to take the latest data and the transfer this into a highly entertaining, informative and relevant presentation on what the future environment will be for both businesses and individuals.
“Tapware is now the new silverware ... You have the show kitchen and then you have the real kitchen behind in the butler’s pantry. “Bunnings, Harvey Norman - they are the businesses to have been in over the last decade as Australians transformed themselves.” In terms of the changing culture of food, he says, when the Greek-Italians arrived here in the 1950s “we regarded their food as wog food, by the 1980s actually your food is better than our food.” Mr Salt sees the future not just through numbers and trends, but by looking to the past. But the real trick, he says, is creating a narrative. “In order to share in the prosperity of modern Australia you need either a university degree or technical training. These are knowledge workers,” he explained. “Which cities on the continent would offer most knowledge worker jobs? That would be Sydney and Melbourne. That is why Melbourne is the third largest growing city of its type, on the plant today. “We offer affordable housing and offer knowledge worker jobs. The greatest threat to Australia I think is a break-down of social cohesion - the idea that we are evolving into a place of winners and losers. “That’s not the Australia I want. I want an Australia where everyone believes they have a chance at prosperity. Which places on the Australia continent actually deliver that dream? Casey Cardinia, and a couple of other equivalents around the country,” he said. According to data, Mr Salt says Australia is the 14th largest economy on earth: “We have the means to buy what we want. You can see that in the four bedroom; two bedroom house in places like Cranbourne and Cardinia,” he said. He predicts in 10 years’ time Australia will have jumped two places in the economy rankings, where “we are bigger than Russia” “This is a good place to be for another generation in fact,” he added.

A father-of-two has been punched while dropping his children off at school in a road-rage attack in Carlton Road, Dandenong North on Wednesday, 14 November. Video footage on Channel 7 News showed the attacker flailing at the victim through the open door of the victim's car. The victim remained in the driver's seat while the offender yelled: "Get out of the car! Get out of the car! Get out of the car!" A child in the car can be heard screaming in distress during the footage. Dandenong Police are seeking the passenger of an older-model white Commodore sedan who got out of the car. He hit the victim several times in the head and arm. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au. Quote incident number 180386916.
By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandenong Basketball Association has offered to save a long-running national tournament for South Sudanese Australian players. The upcoming Summer Slam competition was scrapped by the South Sudanese Australian National Basketball Association after being unable to find a welcoming venue in Melbourne. It follows the SSANBA cancelling its National Classic tournament in July. The association blamed media-stoked fears of "African youths" that led to venues placing extensive restrictions. They included self-financing bus-in, busout transport for all players, notifying all surrounding residents and tenant groups, a half-day Grand Final day, and plans to avoid a build-up of crowds. But since the announcement, the SSANBA has been heartened by recent offers to host the tournament. Dandenong Basketball Association chief executive Graeme Allen said the Stud Road stadium was willing to host it early in 2019. "We're probably the most experienced tournament managers and tournament facility in Australia here. "We're all about providing opportunity. I've expressed my availability to talk with Basketball Victoria and make it happen. "We live in probably the biggest multicultural city in Australia and we have a significant African and Sudanese community. "We're not put off by that at all." Recently, the DBA was awarded at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Awards for its inclusivity. Among its successes are the Black Rhinos and Peregrine Falcons teams for young South Sudanese basketballers. "Sport at a community level is a fantastic equaliser," Mr Allen said. "It's the crux of what brings people together." Dandenong-based Red Roo Basketball teams are past winners at the Summer Slam. Since the tournament's axing, a squad of 20 travelled to Adelaide for a "scrimmage game" over the weekend instead. Director James Kerr, who self-funded the

"It's not us, it's the kids not getting the chance to compete." Within a few years, the club has grown to 10 teams of talented, winning young players. It has twice won premierships in the Melbourne Metropolitan Basketball League. Its senior men were undefeated in the recent Twin Cities tournament in Albury, NSW, its Under-18s nearly undefeated in the Southern Peninsula Junior Tournament on the Mornington Peninsula. "Winning is not an accident," Mr Kerr said. "It takes hard, smart work with discipline." Bad publicity surfaced after an AirBnB property was trashed during last year's Summer Slam in Werribee. At an earlier tournament in Frankston, a

man was stabbed in a fight that started at the basketball centre. In a statement, the SSANBA blamed the situation on "African youth issues that were widely covered in the media". "When we got a stadium, unrealistic barriers were put in the way so that the event was not held. "Stadium managers are afraid to host our event because of the African gang stories they see in the news. "The actions of a few teenagers in the community are being unfairly used to stereotype the vast majority that are doing the right thing." Basketball Victoria described the requirements as "scarcely demanded for other Victorian basketball tournaments and rarely required throughout the entirety of the sporting community".
A man pushing a shopping trolley has been brutally bashed by robbers in front of afternoon shoppers at Dandenong Plaza. The 54-year-old man was approached by a woman and two men outside the centre at the corner of Walker and McCrae streets about 3pm on Thursday, 22 November. After a short conversation, the woman grabbed the victim by his jumper and scuffled with him. One of the male assailants then cowardpunched the victim from behind, police say. While the victim had fallen to ground, the second man kicked him in the face. The robbers stole the victim’s phone and an unknown amount of cash, and fled the scene. The victim was taken to Dandenong Hospital with substantial bruising to his eye. The female robber was described as 3035 years old and Caucasian appearance with long, brown hair and a solid build. She was wearing black leggings and a dark jumper. The first male robber was 30-35 years old with dark hair and a solid build. He was wearing a blue T-shirt. The second male robber was described as 30-40 years old with a thin build. Any information to Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Man attacked at shoe shop A man waiting outside a Dandenong Plaza store during afternoon peak-time has been dragged towards the car park by would-be robbers. A verbally aggressive male demanded the victim's phone outside the Mr Minit shoe-repair kiosk about 4.45pm on Friday 23 November. After refusing, the victim was grabbed by a female. She unsuccessfully tried to drag him into the car park. Any information to Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Meeting for wheel peace
Velodrome on hold By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong councillors have approved the controversial demolition of Maurice Kirby Velodrome, but the decision is set to be soon revisited. After the vote in front of a fiery public gallery on 27 November, councillor Matthew Kirwan lodged a rescission motion against the decision. The rescission motion is expected to be tabled at a future meeting. Cr Kirwan had argued that the cycling community should be heard before the council acts. "It was fair for them to be consulted formally about whether the velodrome can be made viable or whether we need to look at an alternative site for a regional facility," Cr Kirwan said. "There is no rush - there will be no significant budget for this facility until next financial year. "Let's do a thorough review of the viability of the velodrome before rushing to demolish it." Earlier that night, councillors approved an $11 million upgrade for Parkfield Reserve, Noble Park - including the demolition of the circular cycling track. They were at times applauded, at times heckled by a lively gallery of members from the reserve's cricket, soccer and tennis clubs - who are in desperate need for modern, expanded facilities. Also vocal were cyclists who have applied to re-form a cycling club and are pushing for the velodrome's retention. Gayle George - daughter of famed sports commentator and Pedals Club founder Maurice Kirby - defiantly addressed the councillors after the decision. The master plan includes expanding the

Its approved demolition has been put on hold by a Picture: GARY SISSONS rescission motion. 186015 cricket and soccer arena, and replacing derelict sports pavilions with a modern shared clubhouse. A shared cycling-walking path, barbecues and playground would also be built. In support of the plan, Councillor Tim Dark argued for "state-of-the-art" facilities for the tenant cricket, soccer and tennis clubs. There was a need to ensure the "right assets were in place for the right groups", especially given the well-known shortage of open space in Noble Park, Cr Dark said. It would help Noble Park Tennis Club housed in "ageing" facilities, as well as Parkfield United Cricket Club and Noble Park United Soccer Club's needs to expand, he said. The cycling track had "become defunct through a lack of membership in the area". Cr Dark said feedback for the plan was "overwhelming"; there was "an urgent need for the best facilities in Greater Dandenong" at the site. Cr Angela Long, in support, said she'd never seen a cyclist on the track during 40 years of visiting as a rival cricket-club member. She said the current ground was too small
for adult cricketing standards and required expansion. Councillor Kirwan referred to Cycling Victoria's last-minute plea for retaining the velodrome last week. In a letter to the council, CV general manager Craig Eastwood described the velodrome as an "historic" "key piece of infrastructure for growing participation in cycling". CV would sanction any events and fixtures at the venue - if the council retained and resurfaced the track, Mr Eastwood wrote. Cr Kirwan said the recent application to reform a cycling club at the track was another "game-changer". Cr Maria Sampey, in support of deferral, said the velodrome's "appalling condition" had deterred cyclists from using the venue. Cr Jim Memeti said the council should proceed with the masterplan and pursue a SouthEast regional velodrome at another site. "It's great to see the resurgence of cycling. "They've been missing for so long. "Let's work with the state and federal governments and make sure the resurgence of cycling in our city and the South East continues."
An 11th-hour meeting has been arranged between Greater Dandenong councillors and cyclists seeking to save the Parkfield Reserve cycling track. Cr Maria Sampey invited Cycling Victoria general manager Craig Eastwood and pro-velodrome cyclists Kim Nguyen and Boyd Fraser to state their case on 3 December. Mr Eastwood told Star News that it was important to retain and resurface the run-down and cracked Maurice Kirby Velodrome as a safe, controlled cycling place. A similar resurfacing project at Preston cost in the "low $100,000s". "We need places in the metropolitan region where people can learn to ride and be active. "At a velodrome, there are no cars, everyone rides in the same direction. It's a safer and controlled environment." Within two months, a cycling club with a coach and commissaire and the rollout of the AustCycle education program , he said. It would be a community hub hosting cycling clubs and bike-ownership groups - the only such velodrome in the region, he said. The controversy has ignited high passions on both sides of the debate, with Parkfield Reserve's tenant cricket, soccer and tennis clubs in strong support of the council's masterplan. The plan includes a desperately-needed modernised clubrooms, an extra soccer pitch and expanded cricket oval. The cyclists meeting comes after the council voted to demolish the velodrome as part of its Parkfield Reserve masterplan on 26 November. That decision was then put on hold by notice of a rescission motion to be tabled by Cr Matthew Kirwan.

100 years ago 5 December 1918 Dandenong Shire Armistice Picnic Another meeting of those interested in the Dandenong Shire Armistice Picnic which is to be held on the Aspendale racecourse on Tuesday December 19, was held at the local council chambers on Monday evening last, when various matters were discussed, and arrangements finalised. Two special trains will be engaged for conveying the picnickers and it is the organisers' desire that as many as possible of the children should travel by the first train, and the adults by the second one. It should be understood that the committee are only providing food stuffs for the children and elders who contemplate joining in the outing, are reminded that they should provide for themselves in this regard. It is intended by the committee to supply ice cream on

Push for green belt An independent panel has recommended an area to the north of Berwick be protected from overdevelopment. The panel, appointed by the Minister for Panning and Local Government, Mr Maclellan, has suggested a review of Casey council's "foothills strategy." Casey's manager of planning Ms Jacqui Houguet said the Casey Planning Scheme - exhibited last year - imposed a minimum subdivision size of eight hectares, with four hectares being allowed in special cases. The panel has recommended the minimum size be of eight hectares be retained Ms Houguet said the council would decide in February whether to apply a four or eight hectares minimum sub division. The council would consider the panel's recommendation but was not bound by it. The foothills strategy, which studied a 2500 hectare area including Harkaway and Narre Warren North, recommended the area
remain as a green backdrop for its urban neighbours and an attractive gateway to the Dandenong Rangers.
5 years ago 2 December 2013 Seniors line up to dance Dance and song united young and old at Valley Village Mews Retirement Village last month. Emerson School junior/senior campus Principal Dianne Wright has taught line dancing there every fortnight since 1995. "The Valley Village Mews staff and residents donate all money raised throughout the year from the fortnightly line dancing lessons and concert goes to Emerson School" she said. "It is a very special time that both students and residents treasure" Ms Wright said." Many friendships have formed between the students and residents as they renew their acquaintance each year
Heavy forces, light touch By Cam Lucadou-Wells Keysborough College joined more than 1400 female students on the rides of Luna Park as part of a pioneering science and maths event. Taking outdoor learning to extremes, the students aged 10-16 got a first-hand experience of gravity, laws of physics, circular motion and kinetic energy at the inaugural AIR4 initiative. The historic theme park in St Kilda was divided up into science, technology, engineering, maths and technology showcase zones. As well as learning about the physics behind the rides, the students helped design energy-efficient carousels, far-flying paper planes as well as learning about driverless cars. They also watched a cutting-edge Air Force animation Jasper designed to spark interest in aviation. They were joined by 115 female mentors from Defence Science and Technology, Royal
Australian Air Force, RMIT and the Defence Science Institute. AIR4 stands for Aiming for Impactful Results. Established this year, it is a four-year program encouraging more students and more gender diversity in STEM-based careers. Women represent only 16 percent of STEM graduates in Australia. "At every stage of the education system, Australia loses female talent in the fields of science, maths, engineering and technology, despite no innate cognitive gender differences," AIR4 founder Professor Regina Crameri said. "AIR4 Life is an opportunity to positively change the status quo by giving young women the chance to be inspired by interactive and engaging activities." The program is funded by the Federal Department of Defence, Science and Technology and Royal Australian Air Force.

From front page The council's Greater Dandenong Business group manager Paul Kearsley said the recent shop vacancies were "unfortunate but .. a constant factor in activity centres". "This is outside the control of Council and the current climate means it is a challenging time for retailers with more competition and online sales." He said the council was continually looking to improve amenity with artwork installations, such as murals at the nearby park linking Palm Plaza, as well as altering parking rates to help traders. Victoria Police were aware of issues involving drunken behaviour, Mr Kearsley said. "Our information is this is not young people but predominantly men aged 35 and over. "The police have been proactive in responding to these issues and addressing antisocial behaviour."

Guns, drugs in the house By Cam Lucadou-Wells Two Lyndhurst 'ice' addicts were found living in an 'Aladdin's cave' of drugs, firearms and a stolen Ford Mustang, the County Court of Victoria heard. Shannon Brown and Kevin Gray's home was raided by police in November 2016, with weapons seized from ceiling manholes above their bedrooms, as well as a 3D-printed gun and gun parts. It painted a "disturbing picture of drug use and criminal activity", Judge Patricia Riddell said during sentencing. "The potential for violence is demonstrated by the large amount of weapons found." She condemned the mix of prohibited weapons with the "drug milieu", particularly noting the loaded sawn-off shotgun found in the Mustang's glovebox. However, there was not enough evidence that the weapons were planned for criminal offences, Judge Riddell said. Gray, 30, guilty of the "lower-end" trafficking of 4.9 grams of ice found in his bedroom. His cache of weapons included a machete, a sawn-off 0.22 rifle, hunting knife, shot gun, crossbow, baton, home-made silencer, air rifle and fireworks. He was also charged over a 3D printer found in the garage with printed-off fire-arm parts. Brown, 28, had blown a $380,000 inheritance on his drug addiction. Like Gray, he turned to trafficking to support his habit, Judge Riddell noted. Brown was guilty of possessing an imitation handgun, a double-barrelled shotgun, a 3Dprinted firearm and a Winchester rifle - as well
as trafficking 201.7 grams of 1,4-butanediol. Also in his possession were a large variety of drugs in small quantities including ice, cocaine and diazepam. He also held a wide array of suspected stolen goods including phones, electronic tablets, jewellery, passports and watches - and the Mustang. Both accused men waited through a two-year court delay due to disputes over who was in possession of the seized items, Judge Riddell noted. Gray had been on bail for ice possession at the time of his arrest. A qualified mechanic, he'd been introduced to 'ice' by colleagues while working long hours as a repairman in mines around Australia. Before 2012, his history had been a "positive" one, Judge Riddell noted. After then, he'd become - in his own words a "full-blown addict", the court heard. Gray had spent the past two years in remand since his arrest. He'd shown some insight and "real remorse" and written a letterof-regret to the court. Brown was locked up for about nine months before winning bail. He since completed CISP bail and a corrections order without re-lapsing or re-offending. He had grabbed the chance to put "runs on the board", Judge Riddell said. Both accused men pleaded guilty at an early stage. Gray was jailed for 37 months, with a non-parole period of two years. His 654 days of pre-sentence detention was counted as 'time served'. Brown was jailed for 278 days - already served in remand. He was compelled to 300 hours of drug treatment and unpaid work on a three-year community corrections order.

Consultation between Casey Council, Doveton College and private investors is continuing to take place to identity partnership opportunities for Doveton Swimming Pool. "The pool is a very precious asset to the people of Doveton, but they don't always use it and that's a bit of a problem," Cr Wayne Smith said. "Doveton College are really keen to partner with council to reactivate that whole area, including the pool. "Doveton College would be the most community focused school in our city and possibly in the whole South-East." Doveton College is located next to the Doveton Swimming Pool. Cr Smith said council is "not trying to get rid of having a pool there but it might take a different form". A report, called the Draft Casey Aquatic Facilities Strategy is currently being developed by Casey Council and is anticipated to be completed and presented in February next year. "We believe and hope that it (the strategy) will have lots of opportunities to revitalise the Doveton Pool," he said.

"Hopefully that whole area will be good for everyone in the community and beyond but also the Doveton College community which is a very worthy partner." Extensive consultation has taken place with 1200 online surveys completed, internal and external workshops and various meetings held with key stakeholders.

Stepping up By Cam Lucadou-Wells Family violence is an issue that's tackled headon at Hallam Senior College. Students in a VCAL personal development skills class themselves chose the cause - a scourge within Casey, the South East and across the country. In 2017-18 there were more than 4000 family violence situations reported to police in Casey. That every-day prevalence is thought to be grossly under-reported, by a scale of two or three - perhaps more. Students took action, staging a 24-hour walkathon fundraiser for their teacher Dave Nugent's men's behaviour change program
Heavy METAL. They then successfully pitched for a $5000 grant from then-Prevention of Family Violence Minister Natalie Hutchins. This bankrolled a community Q&A and screening of Call Me Dad, the powerful doco on Heavy METAL participants' journey of change. At the Q&A on 7 November, Mr Nugent spoke of the challenges of tackling teenage boys' "all wrong" attitudes towards females. There's the impact of internet porn, gaming and norms that encourage an "aggressive, abusive and belittling" attitude, he said. "Us men have a role to play in this. "We don't realise how much power we have in our hand to step up and say it's not OK."

Crooning a very merry Christmas By Cam Lucadou-Wells Christmas is a favourite time of year for singer Rhonda Burchmore. With a backing live band, she's set to croon dozens of classic Christmas songs at Drum Theatre. It will be a warm mix of story and singalong, Ms Burchmore says. Some of which trigger more than a little nostalgia for the celebrated entertainer whose parents both passed away in recent years. Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas was a favourite of her late Dad. Every time she sings it, it "brings a tear to my eye". "Ever since I was little, I've always loved everything about Christmas. "These songs are like a legacy to my family." We Need a Little Christmas is an anthem for forgetting "all the troubles in the world". It's something we could use of this festive season, she says. Ms Burchmore returns to Drum Theatre after the raging success of ABBA-Solutely Fabulous in 2017. "I love coming here," she says. "It's one of the best theatres around for acoustics." Wish Upon a Star - Rhonda Burchmore's Christmas is on Thursday 6 December, 10.30am at Drum Theatre, corner Lonsdale and Walker streets, Dandenong. Bookings: 8571 1666 or drumtheatre.com.au

Bucks remain undefeated By Nick Creely Buckley Ridges maintained its perfect start to the Dandenong District Twenty20 competition with a comprehensive victory against Narre South last Wednesday 28 November. The undefeated Bucks were rocked by a couple of early wickets in the Round 3 clash, but handy knocks by Jayson Hobbs (36) and Rajitha Jayathunga (50) saw the visitors reach 8/125 off their 20 overs. Tim Phillips was superb - particularly early - snaring 2/15, while youngster Vineth Jaysuriya Arachige (2/22) made the most of his chance and bowled brilliantly. Despite the Lions giving the game a genuine shake at times, the class of the likes of Greg Todd (4/23), Wes Nicholas (3/18) and Matthew Goodwright (2/17) ensured the Bucks got bowl the hosts out for 108. Jonty Jenner (35) and Rumesh Rangana (33) showed resistance for the Lions. North Dandenong, meanwhile, also picked up a strong win against Silverton at Lois Twohig Reserve. Off the back of Shehan Fernando (65) and gun recruit Akshay Ballal (51 not out), the Maroons managed to run down the Bakers' 163 in just 18 overs. For the visitors, skipper Alex Kerr played a brilliant hand in the first innings, compiling a brutal 78, while Yuri Kyaboshapka chimed in with 47. Dandenong champion Brett Forsyth was also once again in the runs for Springvale South as their marquee, punching out an unbeaten 76 as the Bloods dismantled St Mary's at Carroll Reserve. Forsyth came in at 1/41, and left the field with his side producing an imposing 3/188, with Liam Hamilton scoring 43 and Jack

The Bloods didn't allow the Saints to settle at any point, suffocating the home side with a disciplined display with the ball, leaving them 8/105 at the end of their 20 overs. Young gun Sam Wetering snared 2/22 and jumped at the chance to jump up a level, while
Brad Stephens (2/13) did some damage in the middle overs. The win was even more impressive due to the fact that stars Steven Spoljaric, Jarrod Armitage and Craig Slocombe didn't suit up. Mordialloc were another side to find some form, comfortably knocking over Parkmore Pi-
Colours are discussed for Team 11 bid
Community fixtures released
By Nick Creely From day dot, the Team 11 "brand" has always been green and black, colours that are common with the south-east of Melbourne. But, ahead of some potentially key announcements from the FFA in regards to the A-League in the coming weeks or months, Team 11 has once again engaged the community for about ideas on how to promote the south-east bid, creating a recent poll to ask the community about what colours the new side should be wearing. Over 2000 people voted across Facebook or Twitter to share their thoughts, with 76 per cent agreeing that Team 11 should adopt a green and black brand if they are accepted into the A-League. Team 11 project officer Matt Windley said it was overwhelming to see the amount of interest and discussion into what the A-League side should look like if accepted. "The response from the fan base has been quite overwhelming, and we've said from day one that we would be quite consultative regarding things like name, colours, logo," Windley said. "The board will definitely take this feedback on." Windley said that the initial green and black colours were reflective of the region, and one that would be unique in the A-League. "The green was initially chosen as it was a colour common to the City of Casey and City of Greater Dandenong councils, who started this process almost two years ago," he said. "The south-east regionals used to wear green and black back in the day, plus you've got the lush green fields of Gippsland in our catchment. "Given there's no green in the A-League currently it just seemed like a nice fit for the bid phase." It is understood that an announcement by the FFA will be made before Christmas in regards to the expansion process, with two new sides tipped to join the A-League in 2019/20. Team 11 are one of six bids left in the process. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
rates at Wachter Reserve. The Pirates were able to muster up 6/113 after a middle order collapse, with Helitha Withange (2/16) bowling a fine spell. Classy knocks by Ian Daniel (25) and Damith Mapa Ralage (29) saw the Bloodhounds reach the total with four wickets and eight balls left, despite the brilliance of Amal Athulathmudali (4/22) with the ball for the home side. And Beaconsfield managed to upset the highly fancied Hallam Kalora Park at Perc Allison Oval. In a low scoring affair, the Tigers managed to restrict the Hawks to 9/96, with Callan Tout (3/14), Matt Golding (2/17), Jake Cutting (2/23) and Jack Benbow (1/20) all in strong form. The Tigers took it right down to the wire, going from 6/45 to picking up the win off the very last ball of the match. Jarrod Williams (23 not out) proved to be the match winner in the lower order, showing great composure as the Hawks - led by a crucial bowling effort by Leigh Booth (3/16) pushed hard for the win. In other results across the Twenty20 round, Springvale (6/136) thumped Narre Warren (61), Lynbrook (6/125) held off Dingley (5/116) in a morale boosting win for the Lakers, Heinz Southern Districts (5/148) defeated Narre North (7/72), Doveton (5/122) defeated St Brigid's/St Louis (9/120), Doveton North (7/125) had the better of Dandenong West (6/123), while Berwick Springs (7/152) dominated Parkfield (8/99). Berwick and Cranbourne will do battle on 12 December to complete the round. As it currently stands, the top eight is as follows: Springvale, Berwick, Springvale South, Parkmore Pirates, Beaconsfield, North Dandenong, Buckley Ridges and Berwick Springs.

The Southern Football League will be looking to make it five wins in a row when it travels to take on Riddell Football League in the 2019 AFL Victorian Community Championships. AFL Victoria announced the fixtures for 18 May 2019 on Tuesday 27 November, with the Southern league looking to continue its strong form in Interleague from the previous four matches. 2019 will also mark the fourth consecutive year of the Community Championships, with a total of 30 community leagues opting to battle it out for the ultimate bragging rights. In addition, the 2019 fixture will also see a host of community leagues take on local rivals, with reduced travel for leagues highlighting the draw. In a major surprise, the number-one ranked football league, Eastern Football League, has withdrawn from the championships in 2019, with the top-ranked match between the metropolitan Northern Football League and country's Geelong Football League to take centre stage. AFL Victoria Community Football & Development Manager Stephen O'Donohue said the 2019 representative competition would once again be a highlight for grassroot footballers across the state. "The 2019 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships promises to be another exciting event on the community football calendar," he said. "As per each season, all leagues have the ability to opt-in to participate in the competition, and as long as the desire to play representative football is still present, the opportunity to compete against the best senior players in community football will be available." Venues and timings for all games are yet to be finalised and will be announced in the new year. For a full fixture, visit aflvic.com.au

SPORT
Mixed Slam start for the Panthers By Nick Creely Dandenong are off to a mixed start in the inaugural Victorian Super Slam, picking up a win but also two losses in an action packed week of Twenty20 cricket. At a buzzing Central Reserve in Glen Waverley, the inaugural Super Slam kicked off on Sunday 25 November, with the Panthers starting with mixed results. The Panthers took on the Prahran True Blues on the South oval for the early 9.00am fixture, and compiled a competitive 129 in 19.4 overs, with gun opener Brett Forsyth the only one to get off the chain with a typically classy 46 off 42 balls. Englishman and marquee spinner Karl Carver got the Panthers off to a perfect start in their defence, picking up the key scalp of True Blues star Shaun Miller, but a series of partnerships, halted the Panthers from making too much of a dent in the chase, with Will Sutherland (30) and Adam Bull (25) building the platform. The True Blues eventually took the points with three balls and four wickets left in the shed. The Panthers and local rivals, the CaseySouth Melbourne Swans then did battle for the final match of the day, and similar to the thrilling two-day match played the weekend prior, it once again went down to the wire. A brilliant run out by Swans keeper Devin Pollock orchestrated the dismissal of Brett Forsyth in the opening overs, but James Nanopoulos (50) and Suraj Randiv (15) managed to knock the ball around smartly, putting on 29 runs before Hallam-Kalora Park all-rounder Jordan Hammond (3/17) managed to snag Randiv. Hammond got through the gate of the dangerous Lincoln Edwards before he could get settled, but Nanopoulos and Ed Newman (17) started to look comfortable on a pitch that wasn’t exactly conducive to batting all day. Despite Hammond bowling with great energy and proving he belongs at the Premier level, the Panthers managed to claw their way to 6/127 at the end of the 20 overs, with Comrey Edgeworth’s run-a-ball 16 helping them along the way. The Swans lost danger man Dale Tormey early, with off-spinner Suraj Randiv (2/22) forcing the star to chop on, and with Jared Maxwell (35) and Luke Wells (23) looking set, the Swans raced out to 1/48 and in a strong position. Randiv and fellow spinner Akshat Buch (2/16) brought the game back to life, forcing plenty of mistakes as they tightened the screws and cut off the boundaries. As he did in the opening match, Nuwan Kulasekera (24 off 19 balls) managed to reverse the tide and find some much needed momentum, and with just an over left, the Swans needed seven runs for victory.
Dandenong champ James Nanopoulos during his half-century against the Swans last Sunday. 188123 Picture: ROB CAREW But a brilliant final over from emerging quick Jakeb Thomas (3/27) denied the Swans a victory, finishing on 7/124 after their 20 overs. And last Tuesday evening, the Panthers were unable to capitalise on a bright start against Camberwell Magpies at home, losing by 36 runs. The Panthers sent the Magpies in, and struck immediately, with Lewis McManus dismissed first ball of the match, and the key wickets of Oliver Gunning and Tom Russ only moments later had the visitors scrambling at 3/12. But, classy batsman Adit Pawha (43) managed to stave off the home side’s momentum, counter attacking brilliantly to set up a competitive total of 8/136.
Once again, spinners Suraj Randiv (3/22) and Akshat Buch (2/23) impressed, but the Magpies managed to find plenty of runs off the seamers. The Panthers were never really in the contest after falling to 4/34 and with gun bats Brett Forsyth, skipper Tom Donnell and James Nanopoulos, and managed to claw their way to 100 before Comrey Edgeworth’s (32) lone hand came to an end. Continuing his brilliant season, Will Walker (3/20) once again took key wickets, while Magpies champ Tom Russ (3/7) was stellar. The Panthers have a chance to bounce back when they take the Monash Tigers on at Central Reserve on Tuesday evening.
Struck by Lightning By Hayley Wildes Despite the best efforts of Carley Mijovic and Bec Cole, the Dandenong Rangers were unable to sustain the fight against the Adelaide Lightning, falling 86-80, at Dandenong Stadium on Friday night. The Rangers were rolling early as Mijovic drained shot after shot. Just over halfway through the first quarter, Dandenong held a 17-9 lead and at the end of the first quarter, Dandenong’s lead was six points, 31-25. Mijovic’s first quarter was an incredible display of shot-making as she piled on 13 points. The Lightning started to find their groove in the second quarter. Despite Bec Cole keeping the scoreboard ticking over for the Rangers, Nia Coffey was on fire for Adelaide as they took the lead four minutes into the quarter and held a slender one-point advantage at the main break, 55-54. As has often been the case throughout the season for the Rangers, once the second half kicks off, their offence just doesn’t show up. This was again the case on Friday night. Despite solid defence, the Rangers simply couldn’t make the shots they so desperately craved in a frustrating third quarter performance. With the game tied at 66-all with just over three minutes remaining in the term, the Rangers were well and truly in the game but a 7-2 Adelaide run had the Lightning possessing all of the momentum heading into the final term. With both teams struggling on offence, the Rangers hung around and when Rach Jarry drained a pair of free throws with 2:19 remaining, Dandenong was just two points adrift, 82-80. Unfortunately, the Lightning was the only team able to score in the final two minutes and the Rangers fell short, 8680, as Adelaide made key buckets down the stretch. The Rangers scored just 26 points in the second half, highlighting their woes on the offensive end when the game is on the line. With many of their teammates struggling to score, Carley Mijovic (26 points and 9 rebounds) and Bec Cole (21 points and 3 assists) were Dandenong’s most impressive players as they did all they could to keep the Rangers within striking distance. Adelaide’s depth was too much though, led by Nia Coffey (18 points and 3 assists) and Kayla Alexander (12 points and 11 rebounds). The Rangers fall to 4-6 on the season, with a match-up against Perth on Sunday at Dandenong Stadium from 3pm.
Rosters are taking shape for NPL clubs By Nick Creely The Dandenong Thunder is continuing to bolster its roster ahead of NPL 2019, with some solid new signings, line coaches and re-committed players down at George Andrews Reserve. The Thunder has secured the services of 20-year-old Queenslander Pierce Clark, a talented goalkeeper who spent part of the 2018 season with the powerful Bentleigh Greens. Clark has also spent some time with Newcastle Jets in the A-League. Clark will work closely with newly-appointed goalkeeper coach Jordan Franken this season, and is expected to have an immediate impact for the rising club. The Thunder has also added Green Gully midfielder/striker Kieran Dover back to the club, who will add significant firepower to an already impressive amount of talent in the front half, while Keagan Sheridan has joined the club from South West Queensland Thun22 STAR JOURNAL

Veton Korcari and his coaching staff have also re-signed youngsters Mo Feizi, Sevdim Ismaili, Ajdin Memeti, Sanih Zijai as well experienced midfielders Jayke Cuschieri and Josh Bragg, winger Luke Gallo, and defenders Bryan Bran and Nick Modaffari for the 2019 season. It comes off the back of earlier news that Brandon Barnes - one of the finest strikers in the country outside the A-League - is sticking around for yet another season in his extraordinary career. Local rival, and fellow NPL club Dandenong City, has also been busy behind the scenes building what is an exciting roster. City has added former Box Hill and Bentleigh Greens goalkeeper Alex Connell, who will work alongside new goalkeeper coach Peter Blasby, talented 21 year-old Joey Monek from St Albans, promising youngsters Anthony Theodoropoulos from Melbourne City and

Keenan Gibson from Sydney FC, while mature age players James Kelly (returning), Peter Franjic (former Melbourne Victory defender) and Mark Ochieng (former Adelaide United defender) will all call Frank Holohan Soccer Complex home as City tackles the NPL’s top flight. But, arguably the biggest signing for the club in the off-season to date is that of Diogo Ferreira on a two-year contract, with the former Australian representative at under 23 level who played A-League for Melbourne Victory, Brisbane Roar and Perth Glory, returning back to the country after a recent playing stint in Japan. NPL2 East club, Springvale White Eagles, has announced the signings of Nicholas Ally from Dandenong Thunder, Nemanja Lojanica and Brady Quinn, while Nebojsa Vukosavljevic is locked in once again to take on the senior head coach role in 2019.

The Bloods win a thriller By Nick Creely

DDCA legend Steven Spoljaric during his match winning 59 not out on Saturday. 188264 turies and two fifties. Twin centuries to Nathan Pilon (123) and Jordan Cleland (111) helped set up a comfortable Berwick win against St Mary’s. The opening pair devastated the Saints, helping the Bears notch up 5/270 despite Ruwantha Kellepotha’s (4/35) brilliance with the
ball. The Saints fought hard to finish on 8/223 off their 40, but ultimately couldn’t recover after losing a clump of wickets early. Mordialloc, meanwhile, finally broke through for its first win of the season, showcasing the form that is expected from the powerful reigning premiers. Off the back of gun opener
Bowlers, Forsyth in fine form for Dandy By Nick Creely As proven by the recent history of reigning Victorian Premier Cricket champions, the Dandenong Panthers, when their bowlers get on a roll, good luck containing them. Prahran found out the hard way just how difficult the Panthers are as a prospect on Saturday, completely dismantling the True Blues in the early stages at Shepley Oval. The True Blues won the toss and batted, and quickly worked their way to 0/21. But, that’s where everything fell apart. James Wilcock (3/28) found the edge of James Billington to get the collapse started, and through a brilliant bowling display by the likes of James Nanopoulos (2/21), Jakeb Thomas (2/39) and also Peter Sweeney (1/23), the True Blues were shell-shocked as they suddenly found themselves 6/44 in the first hour. While the visitors fought back admirably through brave cameos from Stephen Seymour
Dandenong champion Brett Forsyth is making runs for fun at the moment. 186790 Picture: ROB CAREW (31) and debutant Lachlan Bangs (40), their eventual total of 147 was never going to be enough considering that in-form openers Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth would be greeting them. The unfazed pair knew exactly what they
raced down HSD’s 175 with ease, notching up their first points of the season just three wickets down. And Hallam Kalora Park (6/217) held off North Dandenong (169) at Lois Twohig Reserve.

were doing, and swiftly knocked up yet another 50-run stand to add a collection that is just growing in legend. Just shy of another 100-run stand, Tom Donnell fell for a well-made 39, but Forsyth, the leading run scorer in the competition, just continued on his merry way, crossing another half century. If it had not been for the small total being chased, who knows who many runs were on offer, or how long he would have batted. The ability for the dynamic opener to bat long periods has been a hallmark of his game, and even in the white ball format, he’s proven he is a player with many tricks in his bag. Forsyth eventually finished unbeaten on 80, to take his season tally to an astonishing 478 runs at 79.7, as his Panthers crossed the line in just 37.4 overs and two wickets down. The comprehensive win sees the Panthers surge into sixth spot on the Premier ladder, with a 4-2 record ahead of a big clash against Melbourne at the Albert Ground on Saturday.

It’s almost inevitable that Springvale South and Buckley Ridges will play out a few more thrilling battles this season. Their first encounter of the season in Saturday’s DDCA Round 5 one-dayer went down to the final over - it couldn’t have been scripted any better. The Bucks had a bat first at Alex Nelson Reserve, and the Bloods snared two key scalps early, sending the dangerous Daniel Watson (12) and classy Susa Pradeep (10) back to the sheds without inflicting much damage. Gun Kiwi Greg Todd (61) looked in fine touch, and combined in an entertaining 63run stand with Troy Aust (30), and eventually, the Bucks reached a highly competitive 5/183 off their 40 overs. Malinga Bandara (1/22) was highly important with eight tight overs for the Bloods, while seamer Tim Ford (2/34) did the bulk of his damage in the early part of the innings. Michael Vandort (18) and Nathan King (52) ensured the Bloods could muster up plenty of momentum with the bat, compiling a strong 61-run opening stand before Vandort was undone by Matthew Goodwright (1/25), who trapped the left hander in front. The Bloods continued to move things along, but the wicket of King sparked a mini-collapse, and suddenly, it was game on as the home side found themselves 5/143. But wise veterans Craig Slocombe (26 not out) and Steven Spoljaric (59 not out) knew exactly how to handle the situation, finding the boundaries when they needed to be hit, and the pair soaked up plenty of pressure to leave the equation with six balls remaining and four runs to win. With Bucks champ DJ Watson steaming in, Slocombe found the straight boundary, giving the Bloods early bragging rights, and creating a four-point buffer at the top of the Turf 1 ladder. Incredibly, in just five hits this season, Spoljaric has scored 374 runs at 93.5, with two cen-
