BERWICK

Berwick’s belter Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

- two premierships in two years. Not only is the former Noble Park champion blessed with an incredible squad, but he's a forward thinker, a modern day coach with an incredible tactical nous. The foundations are set, and as the club embarks on a new era in AFL Outer East, it seems the Wickers show no signs of slowing down. Turn to sport for more about a golden day for the Wickers in the final ever grand final of the South East Football Netball League.

IN BRIEF

Fined for burn-off A Clyde business has felt the heat of Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) after deciding to burn unwanted industrial waste. Ferati Holdings were fined $8060 for discarding industrial waste by burning on 31 August. EPA Southern Metro Acting Manager Stephen Lansdell said Ferati organised for a third party to bring mulch to their Manks Road site, but industrial waste was also delivered among the load. "At this stage, Ferati should have done the right thing for themselves and the environment by arranging for the waste to be removed and disposed of at a site licensed to accept it," Mr Lansdell said.

"Instead, they decided to set fire to it. "Even though Ferati may not have asked for this material, as the landowner they are responsible for it. "Our Officer for the Protection of the Local Environment was notified of the fire by a member of the public and CFA were able to extinguish it." EPA issued Ferati with a Clean Up Notice and a contractor was engaged to transport the waste to landfill. "Burning industrial waste is an offence under the Environment Protection Act because when industrial waste is burnt it can release hazardous emissions into the air which are

bad for the health of the community and the environment," Mr Lansdell said. "EPA expects that all business operators correctly dispose of their waste or EPA will take action." Mr Lansdell thanked the public for reporting the fire. "Community reports are vital to EPA's ability to protect the environment from pollution and waste and we encourage people to report pollution to the 24-hour hotline 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842)," he said. Under the Environment Protection Act 1970 and the Infringements Act 2008, Ferati can have the fine reviewed or have the matter determined by a court.

Kevin Ridd’s outstanding service to the CFA By Jessica Anstice Narre Warren North Fire Brigade life member Kevin Ridd, 75, recently received his National Award second clasp. In 2006, Mr Ridd received the National Medal, a medal that is awarded after 15 years of service, and then further acknowledged every 10 years. The National Award was created by Royal Warrant and is awarded by the GovernorGeneral to personnel in Australia's emergency services. This award recognises prolonged exposure to hazard in the service of the community. Mr Ridd has been a member of the Narre Warren North Fire Brigade for a long time. His firefighting career began in 1973 and he was an active member for many years. Over recent years he has no longer been an active firefighter. "Kevin was a very practical fire fighter in his day, although he is no longer active, he gave up his time to do services around the station such as maintenance work," Narre Warren North Fire Brigade president Mark Dobrich said. "He was always very actively involved in the brigade." In 2009, Mr Ridd received the National Emergency Medal for his participation in the Victorian Black Saturday fires. In addition, Mr Ridd has accepted the 45 Years of CFA Service Award, he is an honouree life member of the CFA and a life member of the Narre Warren North Fire Brigade. The Narre Warren North Fire Brigade has an award named after Mr Ridd, called the Kevin Ridd Award. The award is presented to either a brigade member or a member of the general public that has contributed to the community significantly over a period of time. The Berwick Opportunity Shop was the last to receive the Kevin Ridd Award.

Clyde tops state in renewable energy installations Clyde North has topped small-scale system renewable energy installations in Victoria in the second quarter of 2018. Figures from Australia's Clean Energy Regulator revealed while Pakenham surpassed Clyde North in small-scale system installations in quarter two, Clyde North is once again Victoria's top installer. This includes solar panel systems, smallscale wind or hydro systems, solar water heaters and air source heat pumps under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Through the months of July, August and September, there were 14,259 small-scale system installed in the Victoria. This is an increase from the 12,587 installations in the previous quarter. Clyde North residents received 339 of these small-scale systems. Homes and businesses across Victoria installed a mix of air source heat pumps, solar PV (panels) and solar water heaters. These technologies use or generate renewable electricity which replaces electricity generated from nonrenewable sources.

Retirement village rocked by break-in Casey Crime Investigation Unit is investigating a burglary at Selandra Rise Retirement Village in Clyde North on Saturday 24 November. Detective Senior Constable David Swankie said it's alleged an intruder jumped one of the fences at the Harmony Chase address before forcing entry into a maintenance shed between 3am and 4am. "There has been items taken but we don't know what yet," he said. "They are still getting back to us with a list of items." The intruder also broke into one of the unit's while no one was home but nothing was taken. CCTV is available but yet to be viewed by police. A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said residents, with some aged up to 80 years old were "on edge."

A 70-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital after a freak collision in Clyde on Sunday 2 December. It is believed a Ford Territory containing two occupants, both children, was parked at a Yallambee Road address when it began to roll down the driveway about 8.30pm. The vehicle then entered the roadway and struck an eastbound Mitsubishi Triton, causing it to flip onto its roof. The 70-year-old woman, the driver and single occupant of the Mitsubishi, was trapped for some time before she was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. The two children, a four-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, were not injured.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Rosemary Stayner, vice-president of the Berwick Artist Society

What is something people don't know about you? Difficult question. I can't ride a bike! What's the best thing about being involved with the Berwick Artist Society? The best thing about being involved with the Berwick Artists Society is the atmosphere of camaraderie the Society enjoys at the Thursday Painting Group, the monthly Demonstrations and the Paint-outs. It's not all about painting, it's about like-minded people getting together to have fun doing what they love.

THREE … local activities you can do to kill time over the school holidays

1

Cranbourne Gardens Discover the treasure trove of flora and fauna in Cranbourne's natural bushland. More than 400 plant species provide food and habitat for over 150 bird species and more than 20 mammals including the nationally endangered southern brown bandicoot. The Gardens also hosts a range of reptilian wildlife, including three rare snake species.

2

Myuna Farm From education to relaxation, Myuna Farm is preserving the agricultural history of Casey while focusing on sustainability issues. The farm allows visitors to have hands-on contact with a variety of animals and to learn about farming processes, farm animals as well as various sustainability activities.

3

Casey Cardinia Libraries Casey Cardinia Libraries have stacks of events happening at their libraries during the school holidays and they are all free. From magic shows to craft, Lego building to computer coding, there are events to suite all ages from toddlers to teens. Bookings are essential for most activities.

How did you first get into painting? I've always drawn and painted. Favourite holiday spot in the world? Is outback Australia. The stunning colours and patterns of our country inspire my work, and when Melbourne is cold and wet I can transport myself back there when painting. What is your favourite Australian artwork? Anything by Fred Williams or Arthur Streeton. At school I...... I spent maths classes drawing instead of learning! What's your favourite movie? The best movie I've seen for ages is Bohemian Rhapsody, resulting in some very loud Queen music being played at home.

Vice President Berwick Artist Society Rosemary Stayner. 188316 and drover Nat Buchanan, Mona creator David Walsh, Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson, the Dali Llama, surveyor Len Beadell.

Which six dinner guests dead or alive, would you invite to dinner? Six dinner guests, hmmm. They'd have to be six people who'd have lively conversation between themselves so I could listen. Not in any particular order: artist Margaret Olley, pioneer

What's your favourite book? I don't have a single favourite book, can't, I

read too much. Best concert you have been to? Has to be the Big Red Bash this year out of Birdsville. What better than 2500 grandparents in the mosh-pit?

Council to correct rates calculation City of Casey has identified a minor miscalculation of council rates for 2018/19 and is now taking the necessary steps to correct the issue and ensure compliance with the state-wide 2.25 per cent rate cap. At its meeting on Tuesday 20 November, council resolved to slightly reduce the Capital Improved Value (CIV) rate in the dollar that was adopted in the 2018/19 Budget to rectify an issue, which will result in an average $0.22 reduction of Council rates per property. When preparing the required Annual Compliance Information for the Essential Services Commission (ESC), Council identified that there had been an unintended miscalculation and the overall general rates had increased by about $27,000 more than they should have, which works out to be an average of $0.22 per property. This meant that council's final general rate increase was calculated to be 2.26 per cent, slightly above the 2.25 per cent State Government imposed rate cap. After communication with the ESC, council has adopted a slightly reduced CIV rate in the dollar for the 2018/19 financial year and will now begin to credit ratepayers their required amount, which works out to be an average $0.22 per property but will vary based

on the individual CIV valuation of each property. A credit will be applied to about 85-90 per cent of rates bills for the 2018/19 financial year for those with upcoming payments due, with those who have already paid in full to receive a credit on their 2019/20 rates notice. Council has identified two causes for the miscalculation, both related to the finalisation of the 2018 General Revaluation in late May 2018 after council's Draft 2018/19 Budget had been prepared.

Berwick Church of Christ held a special Christmas drive, called Bringing Christmas to Life on Saturday, 1 December. 188335

In the spirit of Christmas While families across Melbourne come together to celebrate, smile and enjoy each other's company this Christmas, we mustn't forget those who are struggling at this time of the year. Berwick Church of Christ held a special Christmas drive, called Bringing Christmas to Life on Saturday, 1 December. "Many people within our community dread Christmas as they are unable to provide their children with a present or a special meal on Christmas day," Berwick Church of Christ pastor Charmaine Vis said. "While this was true in 2012, when Bringing Christmas to Life was born, the challenges of life and the cost of living have not abated; therefore, we remain committed to helping these people at Christmas. "Now in its seventh year, Bringing Christmas to Life made a positive difference in the lives of 70 families." Berwick Church of Christ aim is to reach these individuals and offer them support at the beginning of December to take some of the stress out of the preparations for Christmas and create an event that

provides celebration and companionship. Bringing Christmas to Life is supported by over sixty passionate volunteers who generously donate their time, energy and expertise in the lead up to and on the day. Families attending are able to enjoy a Christmas BBQ together with the volunteers from the church. "We hope to give dignity to parents and individuals, and create special memories for the children as we share a beautiful Christmas lunch," Ms Vis said. "Parents can choose gifts for their children, and children were able to play on jumping castles, have their face painted, create balloon animals or capture the moment in the photo booth." At the end of the day each family or individual was given a hamper; a ham and a roast to take home and enjoy on Christmas day. Bringing Christmas to Life is organised by the members of the Food Pantry Team which operates throughout the year for people who are experiencing tough times. 1213124-EB02-16

On 4 December, a story was shared on the Berwick Star News Facebook page about Casey Council introducing new parking restrictions along Kangan Drive, Berwick in response to the community's concerns about congestion and traffic delays. Here is how some readers reacted online: Terrence Nikolai: The school is the issue... Danielle Kutchel: The issue is much bigger than the school. TAFE students and station commuters also park there due to a lack of facilities at their destination. Any solution for them?

Lynn Bradshaw: If you want to stop congestion along Kangan Drive, you need to look into traffic management within Beconhills College. Parents exiting the school near the roundabout at Soldiers Road and doing a u turn and are blocking the road. It has NOTHING to do with the people parking further down the road . Listen to the people who live locally. ALL roads leading to this roundabout are grid locked because of this. Lisa Carman: Kangan Drive is a mess. Beaconhills is most certainly the problem unfortunately and a traffic management plan should be put into place. Maybe students

need to be dismissed at staggered times? A simple pedestrian overpass should be installed for children to cross safely and also allow for a constant stream of traffic without the delays enforced by the school crossings. Some days it takes me 30 minutes to drive from the hospital to the top of Kangan Drive where the round about is. Unsure how the school has been approved to build an ELC, introducing even further traffic, without fixing the issue. Bring on the school holidays when I can drive to work in three minutes without the traffic chaos. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

New roof for Narre bowls By Jessica Anstice A Federal opposition leader Bill Shorten had promised to invest $500,000 towards the Narre Warren Bowls Club roof upgrade project, if elected to government. The project will see a roof constructed over two of the clubs greens. The new roof will enable the club to play

bowls in a wider variety of weather settings but will also enable the club to expand the use of the greens to include undercover large scale outdoor community events. This funding commitment matches the Victorian Government's recent commitment, which brings the total funding to $1 million and ensures the project can be delivered.

Limits on Kangan parking Casey Council has introduced new parking restrictions along Kangan Drive, Berwick in response to the community's concerns about congestion and traffic delays. Council receives frequent complaints regarding the increase in congestion and travel time delays along Kangan Drive. Council undertook transport modelling for the wider Berwick Health and Education Precinct (HEP) which indicated that the removal of on-street parking along the stretch of road would provide some benefit to the ongoing congestion issues within the precinct. As a result of the outcome and in response ongoing community concerns, council put in place the following new parking restrictions in July: Peak time 'no stopping' restrictions operate from 7.30am - 9.30am and 2.30pm - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

·

is also restricted to two-hour timed · Parking parking between the peak 'no stopping' periods, from 9.30am - 2.30pm to provide opportunities for customer parking. The peak time parking ban impacts approximately 40 on-street parking spaces. Council acknowledges the demand for parking along Kangan Drive, however these restrictions were necessary to improve traffic flow for vehicles approaching the Clyde Road intersection by allowing traffic to fully utilise the two travel lanes approaching the intersection. It is crucial that the emergency vehicle access to the hospitals off Kangan Drive is always maintained and the on-street parking ban will help improve the access and reduce delays. Council's Parking Compliance Officers currently monitor and patrol the area frequently and will continue to do so in the future.

St Francis Xavier College sign up for Smiling Mind By Jessica Anstice St Francis Xavier College has become the latest school to benefit from a mindfulness program that aims to improve the long-term mental health of students. The school has been selected by not-forprofit education and mindfulness organisation Smiling Mind to be the latest beneficiary of an opportunity that offers the mindfulness program to Australian schools for free. The offer has been made possible by a three-year charitable partnership between Smiling Mind and Frasers Property Australia. "We are really excited to start working with the St Francis Xavier College community and help give these children the tools they will need to build preventative mental health ap-

proaches for their future," Smiling Mind CEO Addie Wootten said. "With one in four secondary students and one in seven primary students suffering from a diagnosed mental illness each year, it's vital that we, as a community, do everything we can to take a proactive approach to preventing this health issue into the future." Mr Wootten said some of the benefits of introducing mindfulness into schools can include: Managing stress Developing emotional intelligence Enhancing creativity Enhancing decision making and problemsolving skills A sense of calm, clarity and contentment

The Cake Stop

Sam ties the knot City of Casey Mayor Emeritus Sam Aziz has officially married his partner Ageya after walking down the aisle on Sunday 2 December. The ceremony took place at St John's Anglican Church in Toorak with the happy couple surrounded by friends and family. Reverend Dr David Powys of St John's Cranbourne officiated the wedding with hymns and choruses sung by Nina Finn. The couple met just over a year ago at a time where both "had come through traumatic times," Cr Aziz said. "We fell in love almost instantly, and we are delighted that we have been able to be united together in marriage. "Together with my two amazing boys, I am now so fortunate to marry into a family with my queen and her three beautiful princesses. So now I have five children- all precious gifts from God," he said. Cr Aziz thanked Dr Powys and the welcoming Christian and pastoral heart of the Anglican Church of Australia. "We would also like to thank the hundreds of family and friends who either attended our wedding, or contacted us personally with their best wishes."

A CASH injection from an annual charity drive has further propped up the 4C’s Crisis Relief Centre in its time of need. Hundreds of local lycra legends took part in The Slog, the shire’s biggest annual charity ride on November 17. The charity ride, which began at Chairo Christian School in Pakenham, raised over $50,000 for the 4Cs. This year, riders could choose between a 30km, 80km, 100km and 160km. The Slog has become one of the biggest fundraisers for the 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre, raising over $400,000 since the

first ride. “This money has come at an opportunistic time,” 4Cs Manager Cheryl Daly said. Of the $50,000 raised, a whopping $24,316 was raised by Team Neilson Partners. “This year our company had nine riders in The Slog,” Partner and Senior Property Consultant Matt Clark said. “The money was mainly raised through jersey sponsorship and a fundraising night at Carlei Estate. “The silent auction at the fundraising night was a huge success. The local

businesses this year really stepped up with over $10,000 worth of goods and services donated such as helicopter rides, generator, paintings and homewares to name a few.” “We have been a long-time supporter of the 4C’s with over $60,000 raised through The Slog over the last three years alone. “The money will go directly back into our local community helping those most in need.” The Slog is organised entirely by volunteers, with 100 per cent of entry fees and sponsorship donated to the 4Cs. ●

STEM roller coaster ride By Jessica Anstice Schoolgirls from Kambrya College and Pakenham Secondary College were among more than 1400 schoolgirls from across Victoria who participated in the launch of the AIR4 initiative at Melbourne's iconic Luna Park and Palais Theatre on Thursday, 22 November. Backed by the Royal Australian Air Force and Defence Science and Technology, AIR4 is committed to increasing the number of students undertaking science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects to encourage greater gender diversity. AIR4 saw more than 115 female mentors from STEM-related professions come together and share their knowledge and personal story to encourage girls to see how STEM is an integral part of everyday life and forms the basis of many professions. AIR4 founder and director professor Regina Crameri said the four-year AIR4 program was an opportunity for schoolgirls aged 10 to 16 to challenge the perceptions of male-dominated careers and explore the endless opportunities available.

Rocky road for nursery By Brendan Rees Jobs at a family-run nursery in Hampton Park are in jeopardy as plans for a major road upgrade will make the business "worse off." The State Government's Hallam Road Upgrade aims to improve safety at the busy South Gippsland Highway intersection but will involve the compulsory acquisition of land at the front of the business. Anthony Diaco, who manages the Diaco's family's Discount Nursery and Garden Rock Supplies with his father Vince, said the changes to Hallam Road will mean motorists will be prohibited from turning right into the business. "We're dumbfounded in this day and age," said Mr Diaco. "If you're going to do a major project like this you'd think you'd talk to the business owners in the area and just see how you can accommodate us." He said "there's nothing we can do" with the compulsory land acquisition - "it's hypocrisy." "We've been trying to fight it for the last couple of years," he said. "They've backed me into a corner." "No one came and saw us if there was any needs we needed. It's just ridiculous. "I understand they're trying to make the road better and trying to make it safer but at the same time business is here." He said about 20 employees depended "on this business for their livelihood - a lot of them are paying off loans, mortgages, sending their kids to school." "It's going to affect the business substantially," he said, adding the Major Road Projects Authority (MRPA) were not "not giving us any options." According to Mr Diaco, he has been told the speed limit on Hallam Road will be increased from 60km/h to 80km/h. "How is that making it safer? I can't understand that."

Anthony Diaco says he will suffer a loss of business with the Hallam Road Upgrade project. "A lot of our deliveries are quad dogs, semi-trailers and they come from interstate, so you're actually going to create a traffic hazard; it's going to cause an accident," he said. "They're going to be doing u-turns and that can't be safe." Slater and Gordon senior associate Peter Boyle said the matter had been "very distressing" for his clients as the access they relied on to run their business "will be seriously impeded."

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

"While my clients may have an entitlement to claim compensation arising from the acquisition and loss of access, their preference is for VicRoads to amend the design of the road to minimise the impact if possible," he said. In a statement, MRPA said: "During the early stages of planning retaining the current right turn movement into Diaco's Garden Nursery was fully investigated, however the proximity of the Diaco's entrance to the intersection se-

verely impacts the safe operation of the intersection and overall traffic flow." MRPA acting program director Brendan Pauwels said upgrading the intersection and installing traffic lights would make travel safer for all road users. "We'll continue talking with local residents and business owners about what the changes mean for them during and after the works," he said.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Give a cheer for Evolve By Rebecca Skilton Evolve All Stars is helping athletes of all ages to cheer their hearts out. Founded by sisters Ascha Boag and Gemma and Bronte Miles, the Cranbourne West business has powered through its infancy, overcome stereotypes and burst onto the cheerleading scene in just under two years. So successful has the journey been that Evolve recently took home the 2018 Casey Cardinia Business Award for the Best New Business and its students took on the best teams from across the country at the 2018 Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation (AASCF) Nationals. Evolve’s adult team achieved a first, the junior 2 team came second in a divison of 17 teams, the Tiny Team came second and the Mini Team finished fourth in a division of 15. While 27-year-old Gemma and 23-yearold Bronte head the coaching team with more than 15 years’ coaching experience between them, 29 year-old Ascha steers the business side of the company. Prior to Evolve All Stars, the three sisters were working and studying separately, before deciding to join forces to create what would become one of Melbourne’s premier all star cheerleading gyms. But unlike many siblings, the three sisters had no worries entering into business together. “Our core values are all similar so in a lot of ways it’s easier because you’re all siblings so you’ve all been brought up the same. When your core values are the same, it’s just about bouncing ideas off each other,” Gemma said. “I also feel as though with families you can get away with a love-hate relationship,” Ascha added. “And it’s good in the sense that you don’t hold grudges. We’ve always grown up really close and I guess that’s got a lot to do with dance - its brought us closer together and we now have a common interest.” Aware that most businesses fail within the first year, the trio spent around 18 months planning their new endeavour, wanting to give themselves “the best chance“ at success. Making sure they had enough cash flow to sustain themselves for a year, they even predicted their worst case scenario in order to be fully prepared. Following thorough research, the sisters decided that the best location for their endeavour - and local children - was the expanding suburb of Cranbourne West.

“We looked at growth areas and we found (that Cranbourne West) was rapidly growing and while there were a lot of families, there wasn’t as many activities because it’s such a new area,” Ascha said. “So we thought it was a good combination of having more kids being able to come and the kids not having as much to do ... and (through cheer) kids learn about resilience, they learn about winning and losing and about not letting their team down. It’s about commitment and hard work. They learn that the more the hard work they put in, the more they’ll get out. And I think they’re really good skills to have for the future.” The sisters then selected a warehouse within a developing industrial estate that met their safety and equipment specifications, and employed the help of their engineering and finance experienced partners to build and sustain the gym. Now all that was needed were students. “We liked to think that from day one we would have all these people in the door, but on the first day we were here no one came,” Ascha said. “We did know we had a few people coming the next few days, but it was a big (shock). It was like, ‘what have we done? Have we done the right thing? Is this going to work?’” The girls’ fear was short lived as they took a proactive approach to their challenges. Employing the help of a friend, they quite literally had to put their new street on Google maps, and with no foot traffic passing through the estate, they took to placing signs on the sides of busy roads. Word of mouth also worked its magic and Evolve grew to cater for roughly 75 competition athletes who could compete across six age groups from under sixes to over 21-year-olds. But despite their growth, the girls still found that there was one ongoing challenge: the stereotypes surrounding cheerleading. While most people associate cheerleading with American high school and pom poms, all star cheerleading is actually an athletic sport that involves many components put together in two and a half minute routine involving stunting, tumbling, jumping and dance. The sport requires a high level of teamwork while also relying on participants to execute their individual roles. “We actually found that one of the hardest things was getting over the stereotype,” Bronte said. “Because we found that a lot of people didn’t understand what (all star cheer) was. So

I feel like one of our biggest challenges is getting people through the door but once they’re here they realise how huge it is and that it’s not what they thought. “And that’s why we found Facebook marketing worked; because we could have a video on

there to show people what it’s about. We also have free trials and open days. Because we know the best way to learn is to give it a go and see what it’s about. And then after that it’s just slowly easing kids into it.”

Danyal dares to motivate and inspire on way to the top By Narelle Coulter If self confidence is an indicator of future success, then 16-year-old Danyal Diallo is headed for the top. On top of his year 11 studies at Chairo Christian College, Danyal this year launched his own business - Gymshopen. The online drop shipping business sells gym equipment and accessories for both men and women. When asked what is special about Gymshopen Danyal’s answer is succinct and immediate - “The story behind it“ he says. “It was created by me. I am 16 and I started this to push back on the excuses people have not to succeed. “I am this (dark) skin colour, which doesn’t help. I am a minority, which some people use as an excuse to not do stuff. I am young, that is another excuse. “And the third excuse is that I am disabled. I have a hip disability which makes me walk funny and limits my movement.“ For Danyal the things that normally hold people back - race, youth, disability- spur him

Budding entrepreneur, Danyal Diallo. 186723 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS on. Born in Sudan, Danyal sustained his hip injury when he was three after being pushed off a building. Every step he takes hurts. He uses that pain to remind him what he wants in life, which is certainly not to work for someone else. “To end up working for somebody that’s not how I roll. I like being in charge always.“ Even though he is only 16, Danyal didn’t want to waste time waiting until he finished university to start his own business.

So despite scepticism among family and friends, Gymshopen was launched in July, using $1000 Danyal had saved form part time jobs, including one cleaning his school, as seed money. “I had the idea in July 2017. I thought I want to make something of myself. I want to communicate with people and put back excuses.“ Danyal researched how to start a business, initially thinking he would open a bricks and mortar gymnasium but decided it would take “too much work and money“. He decided he could reach far more people online. He contacted manufacturers in China sourcing products for his website and professional marketing firms for assistance. “I called so many people,“ Danyal said, laughing. “I’d say ’Hi I’m Danyal Diallo and I have this amazing story because I’m 16 this would really work if you would give me a chance I’ll provide it’.“ Most didn’t stay on the line long enough to hear much more of his pitch. Undeterred, Danyal built a website and waited for customers.

After three weeks he had his first sale. A customer in Narre Warren ordered a pair of breathable sneakers. Profit - $23. “It was like “Oh, my goodness the process works’. It’s so much easier when you’ve stepped back all of a sudden and watch it happening.“ With 16 products on his website, Danyal is now aggressively focused on marketing via Instagram and Facebook. “After the marketing I’m going to get more influencers to view the site and say a few things and market that way,“ he explained. “The next step is me going out to tell the world, give them value by inspiring them, showing them it is possible. I have three things that slow me down, most people have one and they say ’no I can’t do it’.“ And what is his advice to other 16-year-olds who dare to dream to be different? “You can do it. You just need to trust in yourself. When you know who you are your next move will be so much easier. Take time off, get away from the noise and focus on you first. When you focus on you everything comes easy.“

FOCUS ON … CHRISTMAS IN NARRE WARREN

Bunjil Place lights it up It's time to dig out the decorations, tack up the tinsel and warm up the vocal chords because Christmas is just around the corner and the City of Casey has kicked off its celebrations. Crowds flocked to Bunjil Place on Saturday evening to witness the lighting of the giant Christmas tree and nativity scene. The Bunjil Place Plaza was buzzing with the Christmas Makers Market, live entertainment and food trucks also keeping guests entertained. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said it was fantastic to see so many community members turn out to celebrate Christmas and make the most of the local entertainment. "It's wonderful to see so many people from different cultures and backgrounds come together to watch as council lights up its beautiful Christmas tree, and celebrates its nativity scene that we're lucky enough to have again this year," she said. "One of the highlights for me during this time of year is seeing everyone come together, and having a facility such as Bunjil Place allows us to have a central place for our community to share in the festive joy. "It is also important to remember the true meaning of Christmas during this time, and remember to be conscious of those who don't have as much to celebrate at this time of year." There will be an array of programs and activities happening at Bunjil Place throughout the Christmas period, including Festive Flicks on the big screen such as White Christmas and Home Alone, as well as Christmas craft for the kids. Santa's Little Helpers will also pay a visit to Bunjil Place and spread the joy across three Fridays in December. Tis' the Season at the Old Cheese Factory,

You can also wander through the North Pole while enjoying some jolly entertainment. Additionally, council is supporting a range of Christmas Carol events being put on by local community groups and organisations across Casey, including: Narre North Carols, A'Beckett Road Reserve, Narre Warren North, Saturday 8 December Carols by Twilight, Max Pawsey Reserve, Narre Warren, Monday 24 December Hampton Park Carols by Candlelight, Cairns

Abby’s netball brilliance shines By Hayley Wildes Berwick Primary School student Abby Curtis loves her netball and, at just 12 years of age, she’s already leading from the front and achieving goals along the way. Abby was selected to represent Victoria at the 2018 Indoor Netball Federation of Australia (INFA) Junior Nationals, which kicked off over the weekend on the Gold Coast. The week-long tournament, which will see Abby and her teammates compete in at least 15 games of netball, is a competition of the best of the best. Teams from Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria will be battling it out for national bragging rights. Whilst being selected to the Under 12s Indoor Sport Victoria (ISV) netball squad is impressive enough, Abby was also named captain of the team. “I’m pretty excited to be representing Victoria and I think it’s a very good opportunity,” Abby said. “I like leading the team - I think it’s nice to do that role.” Abby’s love for netball came about when she filled in for a team and it’s fair to say she hasn’t looked back since. “I’ve been playing netball for two years,” she said. “I started playing when I filled in for a team, then I started to love the sport and now I just play it all the time.

“I think the team spirit and just the whole game in general keeps me going.” The highly-talented mid-court player is quick and smart on the court - just ask her opponents in the SEFNL Under 13 White competition. While playing for, and captaining, her Berwick team, Abby simply dominated the league and was awarded the SEFNL Under 13 White best and fairest, accumulating 31 votes. “We went pretty well,” she said of her season with Berwick. “We came fourth in total and went to the semi-finals. I really liked it.” As well as playing for Berwick, Abby also spends time with the Gippsland Storm as a training partner and she credits that program for helping her tremendously. “I love the Storm,” she said. “It’s been my first year with the Gippsland Storm and I think it’s probably the best club I’ve been to.” Abby also sees her Mum and other coaches as great mentors too. “My Mum has really helped me - she has coached my Beaconsfield team and she’s always helping and supporting me,” she said. “Greg and Jade Heinrich from Inspire Sports Group have been huge too - we train each week for an hour.” When asked what she sees as setting herself apart from her opponents, Abby highlights two aspects of her game. “I think my vision down the court and my

T20 annihilation in West Gippsland By Russell Bennett What happened at the Narre Warren East Reserve last Thursday night could best be described as like a real-life game of Stick Cricket. The highly addictive video game effectively has one main aim - for batsmen to score as many runs as possible from each over of an innings, usually 20 overs, by crushing deliveries to, and over, the fence. Thursday night's record-breaking performance by Tooradin in the West Gippsland Cricket Association's Kookaburra Cup Twenty20 competition was exactly that. Facing a composite side made up of Aura Vale and Gembrook players on the small confines of Narre East, the Seagulls simply went ballistic - particularly marquee player Matthew Cox. He's well known as a proven run-scorer for DDCA Turf 1 side Heinz Southern Districts, Kingston Hawthorn in Victorian Premier Cricket, and current club Ashburton. But what he produced in 54 balls of utter devastation late last week simply won't be repeated for the rest of his career... or most other people's cricket-watching lifetimes for that matter. Cox, batting at three, obliterated the undermanned attack to score an unbeaten 176 including 19 fours and 14 sixes - as he guided the Gulls to a gobsmacking 3/322 from their 20 overs. That's 16.1 runs per over. Cox's own strike rate was 325.93. Tooradin favourite sons Aaron Avery (56 not out) and Cal O'Hare (53) also feasted, but in reality just had the best seats in the house for Cox's ridiculous knock. Aura Vale/Gembrook, in its reply, reached 140 - a competitive, even winning total in many local T20 matches, but one that fell well short this time around. The result largely reflected where the respective clubs are at in the WGCA at the moment - Tooradin is a long-time top-flight powerhouse, while both Aura Vale and Gembrook are struggling desperately for numbers week to week. Their combined T20 side this season is testament to that. Thursday's result brought into question the berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

This picture says it all - Tooradin amassed an astonishing Kookaburra Cup score last Thursday night: 3/322 off 20 overs. Picture: SUPPLIED format of the Kookaburra Cup, which can pit WGCA Premier sides like Tooradin up against third-tier 'Sub District' sides like Gembrook, or even slumping B Grade outfit Aura Vale. But that's likely to remain, particularly if as expected - a seeding format comes in next year to avoid having the likes of Kooweerup and Cardinia facing each other in the opening stages as they have so often in the recent past. Some have called for the Premier grade to have its own version of the Kookaburra Cup, for which there are monetary prizes on offer. But under the current structure, any side that's entered in the competition will have to find a way past the likes of Tooradin, Kooweerup, Pakenham and Cardinia at some point if it's to advance to the latter stages, and po-

tentially go on to play against some of the best Twenty20 sides in the state later in the season. Elsewhere, across the opening round of the Kookaburra Cup, Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll (96) affected a stunning Pakenham Upper/Toomuc (91) collapse to win by five runs at Pakenham Upper; an unbeaten Scott Clark century led Devon Meadows (5/266) to a huge win over Emerald (6/99); Pakenham (6/150) had the answers right when they needed them most against Cardinia (8/143); Carlisle Park (109) was comprehensively beaten by Cranbourne Meadows (2/112); Merinda Park (2/85) clinched an eight-wicket win over Catani (84); and Kooweerup (9/156) rolled Clyde for 134, with regular Demons keeper-batsman Chris Bright (2/1) finishing the contest on a hattrick.

South East Football Netball League chairman Ryan Ford has officially resigned from the AFL South East Commission, paving the way for a transition into his new role on the commission for AFL Outer East in 2019. Ford resigned, effective immediately, after two years in the AFL South East Commission on 18 November, citing the wind up of SEFNL as the reason he has decided his role was no longer “tenable”, and will continue his work with the seven clubs (Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne, Doveton, Narre Warren, Officer and Pakenham) in the transitional period ahead of the new season. “Let me say for me it has been an absolute pleasure to have been the elected SEFNL representative on the AFL South East Commission and working with clubs for the past two seasons,” he said. “It has been an incredibly difficult time as we worked through reviews and processes to achieve a positive outcome for SEFNL clubs to participate in a competitive divisional structure. “Although we have not achieved what we originally thought was the best option for clubs, we have worked together to get a preferred outcome in the respective new leagues rather than stay in a standalone eight-team competition that was universally not being favoured by the clubs, nor was it a sustainable and competitive competition. “Despite the difficult times, I have always appreciated the open and honest dialogue and communication with the clubs during this period. Working individually with football and netball clubs as well as with the interleague program has been a wonderful experience for me and I hope that will continue. “I’d like to also offer on behalf of SEFNL, the best wishes for Tooradin Football Netball Club for their venture into West Gippsland Football Netball Competition in 2019.“ Ford added that its exciting times for football in the region, and believes that the transition into AFL Outer East is the best possible outcome for the clubs, and can’t wait to continue supporting the seven clubs in their next venture. “I’m genuinely excited for the SEFNL clubs in what the future holds for both football and netball and extremely proud of the part I’ve played in the merged project with AFL Yarra Ranges,” he said. “After as much as a decade of our clubs wanting and needing divisional football it’s finally here for season 2019 and beyond. “The commission and staff at AFL Yarra Ranges are a wonderful group of people and I’d like to offer a particular thank you to Aaron Bailey, the region general manager and to Tony Mitchell, the commission chairman for their engagement, time and commitment to make this happen. “There have been many hours of meetings, emails and phone calls to deliver this for all of the AFL Outer East clubs and equally the support from the SEFNL board and the AFL South East commission has been integral to this venture” The AFL South East Commission and staff will now meet with the SEFNL board and SEFNL club representatives on Tuesday 11 December for a Special General Meeting (SGM), so that the SEFNL can pass a resolution seeking cancellation of its incorporation, and so Consumer Affairs can be advised by completing the “Application for cancellation of the incorporation” document. The 2018 Annual Report and Financial Report will also be provided to the clubs on or before the meeting date. Thursday, 6 December, 2018

Luke’s a well of talent Crunching yet another glorious century on Saturday, Casey-South Melbourne skipper Luke Wells is making an almighty impact in Australia. Not only are his Swans now in the top eight with two rounds left before Christmas after a comfortable win against Greenvale Kangaroos - a stunning turnaround in culture both on and off-field in such a short amount of time but they can now be spoken about as one of the sides that look could legitimately make a splash at something grander this Victorian Premier Cricket season. In Saturday's one-day match against the lowly Kangaroos, the Swans put away a side they were expected to, another sign of their ever-growing maturity. And it came off the back of the stylish Sussex opener, who crunched his second consecutive century and his third in just six innings for the club, and in the process, guiding his side to the points. Wells cracked an unbeaten 111 not out after the Swans - led largely by the efforts of Nathan Lambden (1/23), Dylan Hadfield (2/31) and Josh Dowling (1/34) - restricted the home side to just 6/200 off their 50 overs. The Englishman has now racked up 467 runs at the remarkable average of 93.4, and combined superbly with emerging opener Ryan Quirk (40) to essentially set the game up with a 82-run opening stand. Despite losing a couple of quick wickets, the Swans, through Lachie Sperling (20) and Michael Wallace (21 not out), worked together with Wells, who gradually increased his aggression and began finding the rope, to guide them to victory with a further 10 overs and seven wickets to spare. Wells told the News that the general vibe around the club is one of positivity, and won't place limits on what is talented group can

achieve, and believes there's so much improvement left. "There's a very positive feeling around the club at the moment," he said. "Guys are confident and we have the belief that we can beat anybody on our day. I keep talking to the guys about how well we're doing, but our biggest test will come when we're severely under pressure in a game. "That's when I'd love someone to stand up and put in a match winning performance for the guys."

The Swans captain was full of praise for his bowlers helped set up the win, and said they played the conditions perfectly. "It was a pretty slow wicket at Greenvale and they found it particularly hard to score against us," he said. 'I thought we bowled exceptionally well, especially Nathan Lambden, he was going at about two an over for about eight of his 10 overs and deserved more wickets for sure. "We have six genuine bowling options which allows us to rotate well and everyone compliments each other very well." But, with the blade, Wells and his young group got it done easy, and said the expectation is that his batting side should be chasing down under-par totals. "We all had very clear game plans when we went out to bat and there was a stage where I thought we were going to chase them none down," he said.

"I think perhaps their spinners bowled a bit too slow and we always had a boundary option when we needed it. 200 in a 50 over game should be chased down nine times out of 10 though." As for his own form, Wells said it was pleasing to contribute and lead from the front for his side. "I'm feeling very relaxed at the crease at the moment," he said. "I feel completely in control of my game again which is a nice place to be. I do feel that being captain and an overseas at the same time does make me work that little but harder to make sure we get that positive result. "(It's) very satisfying." The eighth-placed Swans will face Kingston Hawthorn at Walter Galt Reserve, in the second last match before Christmas.

Cranbourne triathlete Levi Maxwell has continued his stunning recent form at the 2XU Triathlon Series, taking out Race 1 in Elwood on Sunday 25 November. Less than a month after claiming a remarkable win at the iconic Challenge Shepparton his first professional title - Maxwell is riding a wave of momentum, and it's going to be hard to stop him from here on in. In the Sprint Series race - the first of the season - which comprises of a 500 metre swim, 20 kilometre bike ride and five kilometre run, Maxwell blitzed the field to finish with a time of 0:50:52.9, with the second placed Cassidy Shaw finishing with a time of 0:51:09.2 It's not the only time Maxwell has managed

to win so comfortably, and is slowly building an immense reputation as he continues to build as an athlete. Recently, Maxwell told the News that he was eager to have a strong season in the 2XU Triathlon Series after gaining a lot of confidence out of his long-distance success in Shepparton. "Our season is starting now - I've got the local 2XU series in Melbourne, and then the longer stuff starts up in February," he said. "My main focus is the 2XU series at the moment, which is a shifting in gears again, because it's a short course, really fast. "I've got confidence for the short course stuff now - I'm in reasonably good shape, and I'm looking forward to getting going." berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Berwick pair stuns Saints By Nick Creely

12399909-HM39-18

DDCA TURF 1, 2 AND 3 REVIEW - ROUND 5 It's almost inevitable that Springvale South and Buckley Ridges will play out a few more thrilling battles this season. Their first encounter of the season in Saturday's Round 5 one-dayer went down to the final over - and it couldn't have been scripted any better. The Bucks had a bat first at Alex Nelson Reserve, and the Bloods snared two key scalps early, sending the dangerous Daniel Watson (12) and classy Susa Pradeep (10) back to the sheds without inflicting much damage. Gun Kiwi Greg Todd (61) looked in fine touch, and combined in an entertaining 63run stand with Troy Aust (30), and eventually, the Bucks reached a highly competitive 5/183 off their 40 overs. Malinga Bandara (1/22) was highly important with eight tight overs for the Bloods, while seamer Tim Ford (2/34) did the bulk of his damage in the early part of the innings. Michael Vandort (18) and Nathan King (52) ensured the Bloods could muster up plenty of momentum with the bat, compiling a strong 61-run opening stand before Vandort was undone by Matthew Goodwright (1/25), who trapped the left hander in front. The Bloods continued to move things along, but the wicket of King sparked a mini-collapse, and suddenly, it was game on as the home side found themselves 5/143. Wise veterans Craig Slocombe (26 not out) and Steven Spoljaric (59 not out) knew exactly how to handle the situation, finding the boundaries when they needed to be hit, and the pair soaked up plenty of pressure to leave the equation with six balls remaining and four runs to win. With Bucks champ DJ Watson steaming in, Slocombe found the straight boundary off the first ball of the over, giving the Bloods early bragging rights. Twin centuries, meanwhile, to Nathan Pilon (123) and Jordan Cleland (111) helped set up a comfortable Berwick win against St Mary's. The opening pair devastated the Saints, helping the Bears notch up 5/270 despite Ruwantha Kellepotha's (4/35) brilliance with the ball. Pilon is no stranger to devastating centuries, clubbing his fourth triple figure score for the Bears, with the former state player in ominous touch before Christmas, while Cleland scored his first century at the club, and in the DDCA, to cap off what has been a solid start to the season for the former Cranbourne premiership player. The Saints fought hard to finish on 8/223 off their 40, but ultimately couldn't recover after losing a clump of wickets early. Mordialloc finally broke through for their first win of the season, showcasing the form that is expected from the powerful reigning premiers. Off the back of gun opener Brendan Morris (89 not out), the Bloodhounds raced down HSD's 175 with ease, notching up their first points of the season just three wickets down. The Cobras clawed their way to 8/175 off their 40 overs, with James Van Elewoud finding some form with 54, while Suraj Randiv impressed in the middle order with a well-made 36. Ian Daniel (3/28) was the pick of the bowlers for the Bloodhounds. But Morris, who also picked up a brilliant 95 earlier this season, was once again a rock, with the rising opener combining well with the likes of Ryan Morris (35), Ian Daniel (20) and Nuwan Kulasekera towards the end of the innings to guide the reigning premiers to a comfortable win in the end.

Brendan Rose steams in for Berwick in the Turf 1 clash against St Mary's. 188262 And Hallam Kalora Park (6/217) held off North Dandenong (169) at Lois Twohig Reserve to pick up a much needed win and draw within breathing distance of the top four. Meanwhile, in Turf 2, it seems to be all about the three Narre's, who occupy the top three spots in the ladder ... and by a fair margin. The top of the ladder Narre South hosted Dandenong West at Strathaird Reserve in a one-dayer on Saturday, and got off to a blistering start courtesy of openers Morteza Ali (60) and Jakeb McVicar (34). The class and experience of the Lions' middle order took its toll on the Westers, with skipper Scott Phillips (78 not out) putting the visitors to the sword with a brutal knock that included four maximums, as the home side posted a mammoth 5/277 in 40 overs. Seamer Tim Phillips (1/24) struck early to remove Nathan Power, and despite an entertaining 40 by Karthik Nadadur, the Westers could only muster up 9/172 in their 40 overs. Second placed Narre North also snared a key win, holding off a dangerous St Brigid's/St Louis at Narre North Reserve. Off the back of a sublime 91 to Rams' opener Josh Henry, the home side posted a competitive 6/182, but with the visitors' quality with the blade, it was certain to be an entertaining chase. It seemed destined that an upset was brewing despite losing an early wicket, with Tyler Brodie (38) and Vaib Deshpande (54) putting on 101 runs for the second wicket, but the key scalp of Deshpande proved to be the downfall, bowled out for 175. And the third Narre - Narre Warren - held off Cranbourne to continue its impressive recent form at Casey Fields. The Magpies were in a strong position at 3/105 after strong hands by Zach Allen (48) and Janaka Liyanabadalge (36), but an excellent bowling display from Jordan Margenberg (4/25) and Pardeep Boyal (3/23) saw the visitors rolled for 162. In a chase that ultimately could have gone

Narre Warren and Cranbourne played out a thriller in Turf 2. 188263 either way, the Magpies showed enough composure with the ball - largely through the efforts of Ben Ingham (3/21) - to restrict the home side to 9/146 in their 40 overs. And in the final game of the round, Parkmore Pirates also managed to stave off a surging Dingley at Souter Oval. The Pirates notched up an impressive 6/197, off the back of gun batsman Aditya Ganesh's 55, and the Dingoes fell just short, finishing on 9/189, with skipper Corey Booth (43) enjoying some strong form. And in Turf 3, Keysborough knocked over ladder leaders Beaconsfield in a brilliant display of cricket on Saturday, in a low scoring belter. Batting first, the Tigers struggled to work their way to 7/132 off their 40, with the home side's disciplined bowling group managing to curtail the threat that is Matt Golding, Kevin Baldsing and Jack Benbow in the middle order. The home side quickly found themselves in

a spot of bother at 5/44, with Callan Tout (5/19) ferociously rummaging through the top order, and it seemed that the Tigers would once again firm as winners. But, Cameron McLeod (57 not out) had other ideas, defying the wickets tumbling around him - including a hat-trick to Matt Golding (4/27) that saw them fall to 8/88 - to pull off an absolute stunner of a win. At 9/114, McLeod and tail-ender Daniel McConville (three not out) held their nerve, knocking around the runs as the Tigers desperately tried to obtain the match-winning wicket. But the home side found the runs, in an important win for the club that has them second on the ladder coming into Christmas. In other games, Fountain Gate (6/164) defeated Lyndale (9/131), while Parkfield (3/71) knocked over Silverton (70), while Coomoora (1/127) thumped Lynbrook (126).

They’re rolling to the top It was a big week in bowls for Cranbourne, with its ladies side defeating Glen Waverley and climbing to the top of the ladder, while four out of five Saturday Pennant sides record victories with one rink creating club history along the way with a massive win. Sandra Mueller led the way for the Division 1 ladies as team mates Gwen Scott, Cheryl Wright and skip Isobel Partington made every bowl count - limiting the opposition to only nine shots for the day and going on to win by 20 shots, which was a massive blow to opposition side Glen Waverley. With the overall win by 18 shots, Cranbourne picked up 14 points - which allowed them to move to the top of the ladder which is a fantastic accomplishment thus far in the bowling season. The task ahead for Cranbourne now is to keep winning to stay on the top of the ladder. Cranbourne Ladies 65 (14 points) defeated Glen Waverley 47 A loss for Cranbourne's Division 2 outfit at home by a margin of just three shots against Hampton Park was a disappointing result despite a last-ditch effort from Sue Hudson and her team.
