MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk The Christmas season has arrived. It's a time for celebrations, gift giving, as well as increasing numbers of tourists, traffic jams and inevitably rising petrol prices. This week, however up-to-date fuel prices will be available to motorists via apps like MotorMouth, GasBuddy and a newcomer, the RACQ. All Queensland fuel retailers are now required to lodge their fuel prices within half-an-hour of them changing at the bowser or face fines of up to $13,000 under a new state government two-year trial which gives retailers a three-month grace period to Easter to get its processes up to speed. Fuel prices will be made available free to existing apps. This may mean savings at the bowser for those prepared to shop around - so the government says. Also look out for our 2019 wall calendar planner. You'll find the first six months in today's edition and the second six months in next week's edition. - Margaret Maccoll

WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT
WSL ON BOARD NOOSA FESTIVAL OF SURFING BY MARGARET MACCOLL It's official. The World Surf League (WSL) will be joining the Noosa Festival of Surfing next year in its first stop for the 2019 World Longboard Championship. Noosa Malibu Club president Craig Johnson said the collaboration was quite a coup for the festival and would put Noosa and longboarding on the map. The deal had been the result of "a lot of machinations" spinning in the background with Tourism Noosa, Tourism and Events Queensland, Noosa Malibu Club and World Surfaris working together to bring WSL on board, he said. Custodians of the Noosa Festival of Surfing, the Malibu Club formed a collaboration with World Safaris to run the festival after the Jarratt family retired from its management earlier this year. Craig said it had been fortunate for both parties to come together. He said there was no way the volunteer-run Malibu Club could have run the festival without a support partner and World Surfaris had the experience of having been a co-sponsor of the event and broad knowledge of the surfing world. World Safaris director John Finlay said the organisation which runs surfing tours overseas had been looking for a way to get people to come to Australia so taking on the festival had been a natural progression and it had had previous connections with WSL. After 4-5 years of hosting only one or two longboard championships annually WSL was looking to expand to meet the popularity in the sport, John said. Craig said it made a lot of sense for WSL to join the Noosa festival which had operated well for a number of years and provided it the opportunity to expand its long boarding.

PAPER WINS PIC AWARD BY MARGARET MACCOLL
John Finlay and Craig Johnson on Noosa Main Beach. John believes it will be a new chapter for the Noosa Festival of Surfing. "We've taken steps to make it as inclusive as possible," he said. He said the festival would operate a bus shuttle to help reduce traffic congestion and had changed entertainment times and venues in collaboration with local businesses. The official opening party for instance
will be held at Land and Sea in Noosaville. The Noosa Festival of Surfing will run from 2-6 March with all its usual activities including the open men and women events, junior events and the popular surfing dogs and then the WSL will take over First Point from 7-10 March, bringing the top 60 of the world's long board riders to compete in a spectacular finale to the 28th annual festival. ●
MAN DIES AT NOOSA MAIN BEACH A 69-year-old Doonan man was pulled unconscious from Noosa Main Beach last Wednesday 28 November about 5.30pm after life saving patrols had ended for the day and was unable to be resuscitated. Noosa Police are waiting the results of an autopsy to determine whether he drowned or his death was the result of a medical episode.
Senior sergeant Ben Carroll said the man had been swimming with a friend and his wife was waiting on the beach. "They were planning on going for dinner," he said. Police said the man was seen in the water by a member of the public. "One fellow's gone out with a boogie board and a (Surf Lifesaving) club member
followed him into the water. They brought him in with the help of a younger club member," snr sgt Carroll said. Lifesavers and ambulance officers worked on the man, giving him CPR for 50 minutes or more but he wasn't able to be resuscitated. Conditions in the water were pretty rough at the time, police said. ●
Noosa Today was recognised last week at the 25th Older People Speak Out (OPSO) Media Awards held in Brisbane with photographer Rob Maccoll winning the award for the best single photograph or image depicting older Australians in a positive manner in the rural/regional/ community category. There was a collective "Aah" from the room when Rob's photo of Noosa dancers Jack and Jonny was shown on the screen. Lifelong dancers Jack Floyd, 101, and Jacqueline B'Nay known as Jonny, 92 were involved earlier in the year in a project titled 'In a Different Space' orchestrated by community dance artist Gail Hewton to make dance a more accepted domain for older people and to showcase their talents, abilities and contributions. Performing as Floyd and B'Nay, Jack and Jonny were the highest paid dancers in the UK post WWII and their rich history includes having danced with Judy Garland, Micky Rooney, Danny Kaye and the Jackson 5 and moving to Australia in the early days of television. Rob was also an OPSO finalist in the category for the best photo spread, body of work or gallery of images that depict older Australians in a positive manner (rural, regional, community). The national awards are held each year to shine a spotlight on older Australians. Guest speakers this year included National Age Discrimination Commissioner Dr Kay Patterson and Senior Australian of the Year Dr Graham Farquhar. ● 201721004-LB21-17

COVER STORY
MAN ON A MISSION Surveying the crop. BY RON LANE
A
s we sat and talked it became obvious that here was a man on a mission. His name is Shane Stanley and the mission is the future and consolidation of the Noosa Farmers Market. Ably supported by his wife Istarlia Stanley-McVinnie and other dedicated people, their goal to promote AWARENESS, (a word that came up constantly in our conversation) of their mission is definitely being achieved. The first AWARENESS is of course the Market. Situated on Noosa Drive and located in the grounds of the Noosa Tigers AFL Club this provider of fresh food is open every Sunday from 6am till 12 noon and is populated by some 95 stalls. The second is the main product, fresh vegetables some of which are organic. These vegetables are grown by our local farmers and some were only removed from mother earth the day before. This ensures that they are not deep frozen and coming
from interstate or may God forbid overseas. Complementing this is the availability of other ingredients that contribute towards a good healthy meal table for our families. Another pleasing aspect is that monies payed for the use of the grounds, for stalls and parking facilities, go to the Tigers Football Club. All up this provides a win win situation for our community; our farmers our families and a local football club. ''I have now been involved for about sixteen years and down through the years we have had a few ups and downs (with the footy club) but we have always managed to find a common ground," Shane said. "Now our relationship is the best ever and we are always looking towards the future. Not just the Market place but also our surrounds." Shane was born in Adelaide then years later he shifted to Queensland with his mother, obtaining his education at St Columbians Christian Brothers College in Brisbane. Then in 1989 after completing Year 12 he began work in the landscaping
business. "Away from work my first passion was music and my main interest was the drums, so I enrolled in the Harry Leblar Drum School; then with two mates we formed a band and called ourselves Bravura. One night while attending a concert at the Oriental Hotel in Brisbane I met up with Ishtarlia the girl was to become my wife. We have been together ever since and now have two children a boy Jiah 16 and his sister Kiara 13. While living in Brisbane we used to travel to Noosa and Eumundi on the weekends then finally in 1999 we made the decision and shifted to the country area: and I continued in the landscaping " Settling on the coast he began to look for new opportunities. Through the years Shane had developed an interest in food and while working started to get an idea of what went on in the industry. As his interest grew he talked to those involved and despite being a new boy he listened intently. It soon became apparent (to his way of thinking) there was definitely a need for change: a change in
both attitude and culture. "I started to get a feeling that more should be done to help the small farmers; it looked to me that the big organisations really had the monopoly." In concepts of attitude and culture, Shane had the total support of his wife, a lady who always wanted to see the best available on the family table. Then Shane became aware of the work done by a lady named Jane Adams. It was this lady who in 1998 following a visit to America was "pivotal to introducing the sector (farmers market) to Australia." As a result of this, massive changes were under way. "Her work and ideas resulted in her being awarded a Churchill Fellowship which allowed her to study and help bring change to the Australian market place," Shane said. For Shane and Ishtarlia their first visual contact came when they visited the famous Jan Powers market in George Street, Brisbane. After having a good look they decided that with the right opportunity they would "like to give it a go."

Their first move was to start a stall in Eumundi. "After some time, interested people, one of whom was a lady in the Noosa restaurant business Leonie Palmer, made contact and suggested we move to Noosa. They had formed a food group and after discussions with them it became obvious that here was the opportunity we had been looking for. Decisions were made and our first steps were taken. However it was back to Eumundi with 25 stalls; but after three once a month openings it was back to Noosa. Next step was to meet with the local AFL club and discuss the possibility of setting up on a portion of their property. All aspects were discussed and an agreement was reached." Then came November 24th 2002. The Noosa Farmers Market was open for business. "One of the group was Lindsay Bock and through him the Market received great support in the media; and being new this was vital. At the start it was small; we had about 28 stalls but then it became 35 and now we have 95. Also at the start we operated once a month, then after two years it became once a fortnight, but then one year on it became every week: and the crowds were moving in right on 6am. Our parking problem received a big help when the local SES took over with customers making a substantial donation on entering the grounds. This has been a massive financial benefit with all monies going direct to the SES. In the early stages portions of the grounds were grassy and muddy but after meetings with AFL president John Lomas the necessary steps were taken and vast improvements were made; and this was beneficial to both our organisations." Regarding the control of the Farmers Market, over the years there have been minor shareholders but now the StanleyMcVinnie Trust has bought them out thus becoming the sole owner. "This will enable us to develop a market that is beneficial to all," said Shane. As we talked it became obvious that for Shane to create a feeling of trust in both him and the standard of the products on sale was to his family of the utmost importance. Therefore with their ever present focus on their future and that of the Market they are bringing new ideas to fruition. For example Shane has announced that standard signs will be introduced throughout the Noosa Farmers Market, "thus making clear the source and productive system." Another announcement was that he is prepared to sponsor the formation of a local Participatory Guarantee System or PGS. This is an "alternative certification scheme for small organic growers and it is not bureaucratic, expensive or disempowering," he said. "To achieve this it will be necessary to have a team of people from within the
community who know each other and can work together. "Perhaps our most successful endeavor occurred when we were invited to become involved in the Restaurant Australia International Campaign via Tourism Australia, to promote not only our food but also our district worldwide. The main feature of this was an hour long documentary." With the ever increasing problems regarding the health of our people from children to the golden oldies, the demand for a more transparent menu (in other words knowing what we are eating) is on the rise and the concept of groups such as our Farmers Market can only be a massive step in the right direction. In the business world of Shane and Ishtarlia Stanley-McVinnie there are no TV jingles, no air-conditioned comfort, and no massive semis containing deep frozen foods: just a sincere "Gidday mate," from groups of farmers and their wives, small stalls covered by tents and God bless them, vegies that still smell of freshness and a bit of good old Aussie soil. "I still feel that awareness is the key to everything," Shane said. "Awareness of our farmers, our products and above all the awareness of all people involved. From the farmers, the SES and the football club this is our community. We are all in this together." ●

LIBRARY WELCOMED BY THE BORROWERS It was 25 years, almost to the day, last Friday when Noosa library was officially unveiled following its 2.2 million refurbishment by Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe and Mayor Tony Wellington in front of a crowd of about 200 residents, staff and officials. "The library has been averaging a staggering 220,000 visits per year, and lending 325,000 items per year," Cr Wellington said. "The Noosa libraries have the highest per capita lending in the State - something of which Noosa can be rightly proud."And now, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, those borrowings can be far easier with the new Radio Frequency Identification system. "9,000 residents attended library programs last year. With these new expanded facilities, it will be even easier to provide the fantastic education, information and skills-based classes that our libraries offer. "The newly refurbished building respects the heritage of the original Maurice Hurst design. It also creates a space that reflects the unique look and feel of Noosa - by incorporating artwork from local artists, by extending the space into an outdoor 'al fresco wi-fi' setting, and by utilising features inspired by the natural landscape. "It's that sort of detail that makes this a "bespoke" library and a worthy companion to our Cooroy Library, which was voted one of the six coolest libraries in the world." The library now has additional

THE JUNCTION ON SHOW If you haven't noticed, Noosa Junction has been transforming itself and there's more to come with the Sounds Like Summer Fest to kick off to with the Christmas Twilight Market on 21 December. On Monday Tourism Noosa volunteers were treated to some tastes and sights from the latest restaurants and shops so they can pass on the information to tourists and visitors to let them know what the locals have been enjoying. Noosa Junction Association president Michael Tozer praised the volunteers for their work promoting the destination.
During the Summer Fest the Junction will be bringing in more reasons to visit, particularly on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings with giant games like Laneway Bowls and Connect 4, local performers and street art from muralists Alison Mooney, David Houghton and Joel Birch who have turned boring walls into laneway venues for fun. WELCOME TO THE VILLAGE OF FAMILIES Peregian Family and Friends Association held its first social event last Friday in order to meet community demand it identified from a community survey held earlier in the year for family friendly events and to continue its aim to unite the coastal village of Peregian Beach with Sunshine Coast suburb Peregian Springs and residential community Peregian Breeze. People gathered in Peregian Beach Park for a sausage sizzle, music and children's activities and to discuss future hopes to connect the regions with a bike path. Spokesman Kane Livingstone called on the village community to be welcoming of its neighbours. "Despite some disheartening behaviour from a small minority of disgruntled residents trying to close off Peregian

Beach from any non-residents, I'm pleased to provide the platform for many local Peregian families to rise above the disappointing attitudes of some, and gather together to celebrate what an amazing place we live in," he said. "Peregian Springs, West Peregian
and Peregian Breeze are all a part of the community and we should be accepting of all our neighbours, as I believe the majority of us are." More information visit https://www. facebook.com/peregianfamilyandfriends/

VILLAGE ASSOCIATION MARKS 20 YEARS OF ACHIEVEMENTS The Peregian Beach Community Association will celebrate 20 years of achievements on Sunday 9 December and have invited residents of Peregian Beach and Marcus Beach to attend. PBCA president Barry Cotterell said the Association was committed to preserving the special village ambience and beachside communities, "as well as the fragile environment that is our home". "It was the successful campaign against an unwanted 8-storey, high-rise on Lorikeet Drive in South Peregian Beach that led to
PBCA being incorporated in 1998," he said. Since then the association has notched up a number of achievements including a successful campaign to have South Peregian moved from Maroochy Shire to the Noosa Shire in 2004 and an 11-year battle alongside Noosa Council "to ensure the old caravan park site redevelopment complied with the Town Plan and meets the expectations of the local community". Mr Cotterell said the association had represented the community in consulations on the Rufous Street precinct upgrade and
Community House renovations due for completion in 2020. It maintains an ongoing dune restoration program, has obtained many thousands of dollars in grants to undertake environment projects and runs programs with local school groups to educate students about bushcare. "We are not an Association that rests on its past achievements. We want to encourage and support younger families and kids to continue this work and to protect our village and environment from urban sprawl," he said.
PBCA's 20th anniversary celebration will be held at 11am on 9 December at Peregian Beach Community House.

CARE FOR RESCUED DOGS RSPCA Noosa shelter is caring for five out of 110 Bull Terrier dogs and puppies seized on 28 November by Queensland inspectors in a raid on a property north west of Gladstone where they were living in deplorable conditions. The inspectors were following up on a complaint received in relation to five dogs but found another 105. "The conditions were appalling," RSPCA Qld Chief Inspector Daniel Young said. "Many were in small cages with no enrichment and the newspaper they were lying on was soaked in urine."
RSPCA Qld spokesman Michael Beatty said some pups and adult dogs would need some medical care then would hopefully be looking for adoption. On the weekend the rescued dogs at Noosa RSPCA were getting used to their new, much larger and more comfortable quarters and lapping up the attention. Other dogs are being cared for in Rockhampton and Bundaberg and at the RSPCA's headquarters at Wacol. Mr Beatty said investigations into the case were continuing and it was likely charges would be laid. ●

NEWS
PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS THE TOP PRIORITY Noosa Councillor Brian Stockwell repeated his 1988 survey of hinterland residents and found some things change but many stay the same. There were 237 participants in the survey from across the hinterland with about 39 per cent from the Cooroy-Timbeerwah region and about 30 per cent from Kin Kin Pomona area. Cr Stockwell said 30 years ago 51 per cent of people nominated the natural environment as the main reason they choose to move here and that statistic remains unchanged with social attributes and lifestyle still coming in second."The survey, however, revealed some significant changes over time," he said.
Cr Stockwell said public transport serving rural towns and villages was the top priority identified in the survey but in 1988 it didn't rate a mention. In the 1980s people wanted horse and bushwalking trails but now horses have been replaced by the aspirations of bike riders, he said. "More cycleways and walking paths were high on people's wish list being the second most frequently identified priority for hinterland residents," he said. There are now more longer term residents in the area with about a third having relocated from Brisbane. "In 1988 respondents had lived in Noosa on average less than five years, whereas 40
per cent of respondents this time around have lived in the area for longer than 20 years."In the 80s the greatest challenge ahead was perceived to be the need for a plan for sensible balanced development (41%). Now people are more concerned with the potential impact of population growth (26%) closely followed by the need to balance environment and development (22%)". People are less interested in creating sustainable jobs with a drop reported from 18% in 1988 to 8% in 2018. Cr Stockwell said in one of the most reassuring results of the survey was the response of nearly 9 out of 10 people who reported that the local area had either completely (50%) or mainly (39%) fulfilled their expectations. Residents
of the Pomona hinterland reported the highest levels of satisfaction with 94% being mainly or completely satisfied; closely followed by those living in Cooroy. Cr Stockwell presented the survey results to a meeting of hinterland community and business groups "We looked at the top priorities and the key challenges identified in the survey and all present were keen to continue to work with council to progress a shortlist of actions proposed," he said. Cr Stockwell said the results would soon be discussed with colleagues and he hoped a regular hinterland networking forum would result. ●

NEWS
NOOSA ACTRESS RETURNS TO STAGE Noosa’s Joanna Moore-Smith came out of retirement to join the cast of Joining the Dots Theatre Company’s production, Wit, which will be performed at the Noosa Arts Theatre until Saturday 8 December. Born in Jamaica to an English mother and American father Joanna moved with her family to Virginia, USA, at nine months of age and lived there for five years before her parents separated and she went to Berkshire, England, where she lived for 20 years before migrating to Australia. Joanna studied at the Hurst Lodge School of Dancing and the Central School of Speech and Drama. Ahead of the performance she spoke to Noosa Today. What drew you to acting? I’ve always loved acting. It was a passion of mine from about the age of six. Drama school was an amazing experience. What brought you to Australia? I came to Australia in 1970. I got engaged to an Australian and came out to marry him. Within six months that had collapsed and I found myself alone in Sydney. I fell in love with Sydney. I lived there for 33 years. How did you end up in the popular television series Young Doctors? I was performing in Play It Again Sam at the Adelaide Theatre Festival and the casting team from Young Doctors came to see it. I had the role of Laura Denham, the wife of the superintendent. I was in it for about three years. Theatre is my first love so working in television was quite a big adjustment.
Joanna Moore-Smith as Laura Denham in Young Doctors. What was it like working in the high rating show? It was a good cast and it was fun to do. It was the early days of television. There weren’t a lot of rehearsals. Laura went through her ups and downs. She went through a shoplifting phase. It was quite funny. When I’d go to the shop people would look at you and like they were thinking what’s she going to take. What made you leave acting? I had a young son. When my marriage broke down I had to find something more reliable than advertising. I decided to study law at the University of NSW. I became a family law solicitor for 21 years, the last five in Noosa. How did you come to live in Noosa? I came up here because a friend said Noosa is a really beautiful place, you should have a look at it. I met my second husband and
Joanna Moore-Smith married after a few years. I just love it up here. What made you perform in Wit? Jo Kadlecek Gilbert, the producer, (told me) she would really like to put on this wonderful play and thought there was a role that would really suit me. I read it and said I’d love to do it. I play the mentor of the leading character. It’s a very interesting role to play. I play her at 52 and then at 80. She’s quite a feisty person. Our leading lady Alison Chambers gives a wonderful performance which shouldn’t be missed. Alison who will be known to audiences from her roles in TV dramas such as Water
Rats plays Vivian Bearing, a brilliant and uncompromising professor of literature who is facing her greatest challenge yet: a diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Performances will be held at 7.30pm performance December 6, 7 and 8 with a matinee on Saturday December 8 at 2pm. Tickets at www.noosaartstheatre.org.au or at the box office, 163 Weyba Road in Noosaville. Funds will be raised from the production for Cancer Council Queensland. CHRISTMAS BELLS RUNG IN COOROY No one welcomes in Christmas like Cooroy. The Christmas in Cooroy festival kicked off on Friday evening with the lighting of the tree and shop windows and activities got even bigger on Saturday with crowds lining Maple Street six or seven deep to watch the Bendigo Bank Street Parade. The theme this year was past, present, future. There were 30 floats and community groups weaving their way along and plenty of goodies being handed out for the kids to enjoy. This year Santa's took a more leisurely pace and traded their usual run for the
Bentley's Great Santa Stroll. It was probably a wise choice in the sweltering conditions with the event raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation. The parade judges Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington, Noosa MP Sandy Bolton and Nicklin MP Marty Hunt had their work cut out for them deciding the winner while the fun of the festival hosted by Cooroy's Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club continued in Apex Park with activities, rides and ended with the Cooroy RSL fireworks lighting up the sky. â—?

SOCIAL SCENE Hundreds of children were presented with early Christmas gifts on Friday from the Hastings Street Association as they announced the arrival of the festive season with assistance from Santa who dropped by to light the Christmas tree. "Come on Santa light the tree," children shouted before the jolly man in red heard their calls and wandered in to Hastings Street with his team of elves an fairies. Santa called for cheers from the crowd to help him achieve the magical tree lighting. "We need some electricity," he said. "Sock it to me." And everyone cheered as the lights shone. â—?

LETTERS DIFFERENT TIME, DIFFERENT TREATMENT FOR REFUGEES It is hard to believe F. Venturini is equating his family experience as refugees with the people incarcerated on Manus and Nauru. We lived near a “migrant hostel”. When my children were growing up, they went to school and became friends with many of them. They appeared to be happy with their life and loved being in Australia. They had freedom to go to school and enjoyed a life very similar to ours. This would appear to be a lifetime away from being imprisoned on an Island with no freedom and less than appealing conditions, while politicians made it apparent that unless another country was willing to have you there was no way you would get to where you dreamt of going. F. Venturini’s family spent a mere nine months, obviously under far better conditions and knowing what the score was when they were allowed to come here, and knowing there was an end in sight. They had no jailors who were known to be cruel at times (hearsay). For many of them six years have passed. As for Bob Jarvis’s assertions (also hearsay) regarding their refusal to work, I ask you, would you work after being treated like prisoners and shoved around at the Australian Government’s will. Would you seriously think they would be willing to work? They were desperate to be taken off the Island and had fears that if they were working the said government would think they were settled. I have been to Nauru, it was an awful little place when it was a kingdom and I don’t imagine any improvement since then. It took us just over 20 minutes to walk around the Island. I have also spent time in PNG and I can’t imagine those people would be very welcoming to those they didn’t want there. I am looking forward to the day when all Australians have a good long, hard think about the lives we are destroying, lives of innocent people who left war-torn countries to have a better life and are now paying a heavy price “to stop the boats”. Mae Elliott, Noosaville
TOURISM LEVELS UNSUSTAINABLE The furore over the New Year’s Eve party - yet another “event” on public land in Noosa - leads me to reflect on the attitudes to tourism of the main players - Tourism Noosa and Noosa Shire Council led by Mayor Wellington. In policy and “vision” documents both Tourism Noosa and the mayor use the term “sustainable” when describing their approach

LENSCAPE
Try not to rear-end a painter's truck! Noosa Parade last week - an unlucky hit. If you have a photo to send in for lenscape please email newsdesk@noosatoday. com.au to tourism levels as if that term means something good. It does not. “Sustainable” is an adjective that means only what the user wants it to mean. When applied to tourism it can mean many things. In the case of Tourism Noosa “sustainable” clearly means resort and hotel bed occupancy of 100 per cent, 365 days a year, as many events as can be crammed into the calender, permanent congestion and many days where local residents are denied the use of town amenities, roads and parking. In the case of Mayor Wellington, who says “it’s council policy”, sustainable clearly means whatever Tourism Noosa wants because the council funds Tourism Noosa. That policy needs changing. Given the frequent congestion, loss of access to amenities such as main beach for residents, overcrowding and general lowering of standards, it could be argued that the present level of tourism is unsustainable. It is interesting to speculate on why the council has this policy which is so damaging for the quality of life for Noosa residents. It can only be money. Can residents please see the balance sheets for these events? Who pays for things, who gets the profits and how much does the council get out of it? It may be that council gets sufficient reward from these events to justify the loss of amenity for residents as the money (hopefully) is well spent elsewhere.

THANKS FOR SAVING WILDLIFE Noosa Council is to be wholeheartedly congratulated for prioritizing the environment and the Noosa Biosphere. Its forward thinking purchase of large parcels of land provides connectivity and scale which brings real benefit for the preservation of all wildlife including koalas. The existing koala colony in the Yurol Forrest can only benefit from council’s carefully implemented strategy. This council is preserving Noosa’s uniqueness and its iconic wildlife. Hooray! D. Castledine, Noosaville
HISTORY REPEATS Dear Bob Jarvis and F. Venturini, I thank you for your letter about refugees in detention (NT, 22 November); refugees rarely feature in polite conversation. History repeats itself, but with some differences. Post WW2 migrants and refugees had it tough but jobs were available: Australia was craving workers. People suffered from post war trauma, but most were white and European, unlike the Asian, African and Muslim people arriving today. Racism has not disappeared and Muslims are disliked and hated. Manus Island is beautiful and the locals are good people, but the detention centres have been imposed on them; dreadful stories about the detainees have fuelled their anger. As developing countries, Papua New Guinea and Nauru face issues of scarcity, security and violence, as all expats working there confirm. Over the years, 12 refugees have died on Manus Island and Nauru; all deaths were preventable. The Manus Island refugees didn’t volunteer for a few days’ work, even if low-paid. After more than five years of detention in dire circumstances, they are not in a good shape, physically or mentally. How could one think that a people who have been demon-
ised, victimised and left in limbo for years in a hostile place, could present a few days’ heavy work? Some refugees have been relocated to the US, but very slowly. It will take several years to empty the detention centre. Those rejected by the US only wish to die, which is why daily suicide attempts are reported. Australia has no solution on offer. We need to accept the fact that the offshore detention of refugees is inhumane and illegal. The UN Security Council has criticised Australia, along with other harsh nations i.e. North Korea, China and Libya, for depriving asylum seekers of liberty. Claims that refugees have freedom on Manus Island and Nauru are laughable when the locals hate them, attack them, and want them gone. These refugees sought asylum from Australia; this is not illegal. If they are allowed in and permitted to work, they will prove themselves as excellent citizens, just as refugees and migrants did in previous times. Deaths on Manus Island and Nauru: Reza Barati, 24 Iranian; Kamil Hussain, Pakistan; Hamid Kehazaei, 24 Iranian; Omid Masoumali, 23 Iranian; Rakib Khan, 26 Bangladeshi; Kamil Hussain, Pakistani; Faysal Ishak Ahmed, 27 Sudanese; Hamed Shamshiripour, 32 Iranian; Rajeev Rajendran, 32 Sri Lankan; Jahingir, 29 Bangladeshi; Salim Kyawning, 26 Rohingya from Myanmar; Fariborz Karami, 26 Iranian. Eveline B. Goy, Tewantin
LESSONS LEARNT? The Noosa LNP is looking to invigorate its membership and electoral performance. Do they really think it was a good idea to use anti-abortion, anti-voluntary assisted dying, anti-marriage equality, pro Adani mine, pro conversion therapy MP Fiona Simpson as their poster child? The recent Victorian State Election result has shown that voters reject conservative religious factions branch-stacking and pushing their narrow fundamentalist agenda. I wonder if the Noosa LNP has learnt any lessons from their catastrophic experience down south. Robin Bristow, Noosaville
LET THE BACKPACKERS COME IN How much do we need the backpackers? The young ones and the not so young ones. Let them all come in. Let them shake up that retirement village. Let them bring in some fun, let alone dollars. Noosa is declared as a adventure destination! Give them adventure, risk taking, breath-taking fairy pool, Glasshouse Mountains abseiling, BMX cross country riding hair-raising adventures, give them Coolum Mountain and Mount Tinbeerwah, horse riding, sailing, the list goes on and give them good accommodation! Good accommodation is not just a bed in a “Backpacker Hostel“. Good accommodation is a room in a affordable well presented house close to all amenities, friendly staff, a bar, restaurant, public transport and all the rest of it. Now, we have lost the very breautiful and well respected Willliams Street Backpackers and the great Reataurant “Global Village“ to developers, which was loved and respected by so many tourists especially sole female travellers who felt safe there ... it is gone now. We need more places like that and please welcome the new proposal in Mary Street for a new Backpackers Heaven. (Pssst: we all have been backpackers once). Heidi Schum, Noosa noosatoday.com.au

ALLURING LAST EXCLUSIVE LAND RELEASE NEAR NOOSA RIVER IT'S alluring and it's quintessential Noosa for the next generation. "The release of Pandanus Grove in Noosaville has been long anticipated and this week we are very excited to welcome the first new residents," Tom Offermann Real Estate principal, Tom Offermann said. "The exclusive master-planned estate of 50 home sites represents an unprecedented final opportunity for buyers to get in on the ground floor, and to be in a community where all their neighbour's homes are also the latest in design and quality. "Its new residents will revel in a true sense of community with the timeless integrity and character of the address. "There is a lot of aspirational demand from buyers wanting to create their own home in Noosa Heads and Noosaville, and until now the only option has been buying an allotment or a house for demolition in an older estate. "I think it's wiser to be amongst new homes than 20-year-old designs elsewhere." The first release in Pandanus Grove offers eight premium allotments for sale by tender, all generously sized over 600m2
with a price guide from $710,000 to $775,000. "We all wish we could turn back the hands of time and buy at the original developer's price, because land estates have a habit of escalating in value," Tom said. "We'll now is that time again so don't miss the boat." The first release is in Ely Street and parcels are clearly marked. Principal marketing agents Richard Locke and John Dover will be on site on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am until 12 noon to assist buyers. Pandanus Grove is only 5 minutes from the Noosa River and Gympie Terrace. Parks and cycle tracks are integral to the estate and it's close to esteemed private and public schools, transport options, well maintained parks, Noosa Village retail precinct, the Noosa Library and the Leisure Centre, plus it abuts the Noosa Waters canal development. It's all about saving the best until last so seize the moment because opportunities such as Pandanus Grove, located in one of Australia's premier resort destinations, will never be repeated. â—?

LAGUNA GOING NATIVE BRINGS BENEFITS NAMED AT TOP
12401755-SN42-18
Native plants offer habitat for fauna and can cut down on backyard maintenance.
Horticulturalist Tom Robinson. "Bear in mind what size each native plant will grow to, whether it is suitable for the type of soil, sun exposure and moisture available, whether the plant has fruit to attract wildlife, and the flowering season," he said. "Whether you plant a single bottlebrush or dedicate an entire section of your garden to natives, there are big reasons to introduce sustainable, wildlifefriendly, beautiful natives into every home garden." ●

LAGUNA Real Estate has once again been named amongst the finalists in the Real Estate Institute of Queensland's 2019 prestigious Awards for Excellence. The company with four offices in Noosa and Gympie, works across residential sales, property management and holiday letting, and has won a finalist place in three categories. They will go up against five others, including Amber Werchon Property, for the title of Large Residential Agency of the Year. Laguna Real Estate took out the award in 2013, and has three times been named REIQ's Agency of the Year. They have also been named finalist in the Community Service Award, which they won in 2017 and 2014. And Eric Sutherland is one of two finalists in the Corporate Support Person of the Year category. REIQ chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella said to be named a finalist was proof that a member had set themselves the task of being the best real estate practitioner they could be and achieved that goal. "They are to be applauded," she said. The winners will be announced at the gala awards dinner at the Royal International Convention Centre in March. ●
WHEN it comes to landscaping around the house, choosing natives can not only reduce time spent on garden maintenance, but also help threatened wildlife. Australia has more than 1600 named bee species, with many under threat due to habitat loss, exotic species, pesticides and climate change. More than 50 native species have become extinct since European settlers arrived. About 600 species are listed as vulnerable, 100 endangered, and 86 are critically endangered. Native bees don't sting and are important for pollinating flowers and food crops, and Horticulturalist Tom Robinson said homeowners and commercial property managers were choosing native plants in increasing numbers. Not only did they offer habitat for local fauna, like native bees, they prevent soil erosion, they were the sustainable choice, and they were low-maintenance and could be left unmanaged during holidays. "Native plants are the easy option for those who don't have the time and ability to regularly weed and water, or who are away from home for periods of time," he said. "Especially coming up to Christmas, often the garden can be left to its own devices. "No one wants to arrive home to dead plants and cracked, dehydrated soil. "A beautiful garden flourishing with plants which are naturally droughtresistant means that it's also holidayproof!" Mr Robinson, of Tom Robinson Living Landscapes Noosa, said many native plants were adaptable to varying temperatures and soil conditions.

KIDS ROCK For the third year in a row, twenty budding rockstars from local schools are preparing to bring down the house as the 2018 Eumundi School of Rock class put the finishing notes on their end-of-year performances. The brainchild of multi award-winning local songstress Katie Noonan, the School of Rock awards music scholarships to primary school students aged from eight to thirteen years to be mentored in drums, bass, keys, brass, guitar and vocals for three months before performing in a live rock concert. This year's tutoring team includes Music Director and bassist/trumpeter Owen Newcomb; guitarist/vocalist Mark Moroney; drummer Brett Newman; vocalist Clint Francis; guitarist/keyboardist Brodie Graham; and National Jazz Award-winning Saxophonist, Zac Hurren.
According to five-time ARIA Awardwinner Katie, the program has seen budding local musicians grow on many levels. "The many benefits of music education are well documented but it is beautiful to see this in action - happy kids with increased self confidence and self awareness who sound seriously RAD and rocking to boot! "Eumundi School of Rock provides a unique opportunity - at no cost to the student - to develop their musical skills and learn performance skills under the tutorship of top professionals," Katie said. "We have seen incredible outcomes for students including improved self-esteem, stagecraft, musicianship and teamwork - all in a fun and supportive environment. The students have formed two bands of various configurations and are currently preparing to perform on stage in
He regularly tours the UK and Ireland, has performed in Europe as well as at Montreal's Just For Laughs Festival and is both an alumni and one of the biggest comedy acts each year at the world's biggest arts festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. front of a packed house. Celebrating the end of the three-month program, the night will include performances by special guests Melbourne rock trio Dallas Frasca, Katie Noonan, and The Valley Drive - the 2017 Eumundi School of Rock Showcase Band. Katie said the level of talent in the local community was astounding and that she was pleased to see some of the kids from previous years return to the program. Katie herself has recently built on her
musical success by winning her fifth ARIA award for her album 'Songs of the Latin Skies' with Karin Schaupp. She was also part of the team behind the newly included ARIA award for music school teachers, inspired by her time running the Eumundi School of Rock. All artists performing at the end of year concert will be performing for free, with 100 percent of the profits going directly towards keeping the program free for the community in 2019. The endof-year concert will be held on Friday 14 December at the Eumundi School of Arts Hall with ticket prices starting at $15. Friday, 14 December, 6-10pm at the Eumundi School of Arts, 63 Memorial Drive, Eumundi. Tickets start from $15 with children under five free and are available on Eventbrite - visit eventbrite.com.au and search for Eumundi School of Rock or follow the Eumundi School of Rock Facebook page. ●

TNT 1st Grade winning at home last Saturday.
WRIGHT'S TON PUTS TNT ON TOP BY RANDALL WOODLEY Last Saturday saw the first round of the One-Day matches being played around the coast. The RSL TNT Firsts are now on top of the competition ladder with a great win against their old adversaries, Glasshouse and Caboolture losing to Caloundra. The match featured a century by club stalwart Chris Wright and an 85 by "Mr Consistent", Ben Gear plus a solid all-round bowling performance. However, the other three TNT teams went down in close matches. FIRSTS. In their match against Glasshouse at Read Park, captain Jake Dennien won the toss and batted first in the warm humid conditions. Chris Wright and Ben Gear opened the batting and after 8 overs had posted 27, but better things were to come as they dominated their change bowlers. Both batsmen reached their 50s as the partnership passed 100, then 150 with Chris bringing up his ton before going for 106 (off 90 balls) in a partnership of 176 from 31 overs. Ben went 2 overs later for 84 and TNT went to the drinks break 2-200 off 34 overs. It is always difficult for a team to know how aggressive to be in the final overs and except for Jarrod Officer (29) and Andrew Kratzmann (24), none of the other batsmen were able to add any significant scores. Eventually the last wicket fell at the very competitive score of 277. It was great to see so many club juniors, parents and supporters, including the women's team players down to watch the end of Glasshouse's innings. The Under 10's had a game in the lunch break and all the Juniors formed a guard of honour and cheered the big boys onto the field after the break. TNT's bowling has been the strength this season and the goal of 30 dot balls in the first 10 overs was achieved by Scott Aufderheide and Tom Freshwater, and as well Freshy picked up 3 wickets to have them 3-50. This became 5-80 with Lachie Gunner picking one up and Jye Baker taking a genuine screamer running back and diving at mid-on off Jarrod's bowling. With tight bowling and strong fielding, the visitors were restricted to be all out for 217. Other bowlers to pick up wickets were Scott (1), Jake Dennien (2) and Sam Baker (1). All of the bowlers did a great job but with 20 wides and no balls compared to Glasshouses' 2, TNT will definitely have to improve in this area of the game as next Saturday the team has to travel south and
face last year's top team, Caboolture. SECONDS. After their great win last weekend, the team were confident in their 40 overs-a-side-match against the Maroochydore Swans at Buderim. However, it turned out to be a disappointing afternoon. Batting first the TNT team were soon in trouble at 5 -15 and then were bowled out for 85 with a majority of the wickets coming from poor shot selection and ill-discipline. The only score worth mentioning was from the consistent Adam Curry who made 24. With little runs to play with The TNT boys took the field and competed well, taking 7 wickets before the Swans reached the required target. Best bowling figures were from Nick Bennett and Adam Curry who both took three wickets. Next week the team return home to play Glasshouse. THIRDS were away to play Yandina. Sent in to bat, TNT lost their first wicket at 24 runs. At the end of their 40 overs they had posted 199 which was about 20 runs short of their target. Best scores were from Darcy Morgan 46, Kent Officer 42, Brendan Wright 20 and Steve Sinclair 20. Taking the field after lunch the team tried hard but dropped catches and short pitched bowling cost the team big-time and Yandina chased the runs down with 4 overs to spare. Best bowling figures- Kent Officer 2-35, Will Gear 2-43 and Jason Toohey 1-33. The captain summed up the match- "Just one of those days- Onto the next game!" Their next match is against Maroochydore at Dale Officer Oval. FOURTHS were at home to top of the ladder Palmwoods. It ended up being a very hard-fought match with Palmwoods scraping home in the second last over of the day. Early wickets saw both TNT openers out early but Michael Sobey again steadied the innings with a solid 41. Brendan Chaplin continued his form with the bat to add a quick fire 21, with Justin Talbot adding 16, Cody Wright 16 and Brian Lee batting out the innings to finish on 39no. TNT's final score after 40 overs was 8 for 168. When Palmwoods batted, some dropped catches and mis-fielding saw them slowly run down the target. More than a dozen extras helped them eventually win the game. Wicket takers were Brendan Chaplin 2-32, Graham Chaplin 1-24, Justin Talbot 1-28 and Brian Lee 1-28. Next week the team travels south to play USC/Buderim. ● noosatoday.com.au
LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
HARD RAIN FALLING IN TIMOR-LESTE I'd just chased the last mosquito out of my room, covered myself in evil-smelling repellant, jumped into bed and reached for my book when the familiar ground-based rumble began to rock the house, and not in a good way. The sound of terrified children filled the night air on the street outside even before the rumble had finished, but by the time cameraman Shaun Cairns and I made it out there, the screams had become howls of laughter - perhaps it was us in our underpants! - but it was also typically Timor. Fear and joy are never far apart. Our host Carlito joined us from the adjoining bungalow and we stood on the terrace chatting until the noise on the street had died down. There were no aftershocks, we went back to bed. This was my tenth earthquake experience in different parts of the world in 2018, so I had no trouble resuming my sleep of the dead, but no matter how commonplace it becomes, my first thought on feeling the earth shake beneath you is where am I and how safe is this house? The answer is often not good. The late night quake last Saturday was a punctuation mark on another amazing week in Timor Leste. After torrential rain, mudslides and a flooded music festival in the mountains of Maubisse, including three days and nights in a mountainside cabin with no electricity, we had returned to the relative luxury of an Airbnb in the suburbs of Dili, only to be shaken from slumber by the gods of the Ring of Fire. But as we gathered outside the packed Immaculate Conception Cathedral in downtown Dili very early on a bright and beautiful Sunday morning, the sweet voices of the choir floating on the still air, all seemed right with the world. We had come to Timor Leste for the second time in a year to film for a documentary we hope to complete in time to be screened at the 20th anniversary next August of the referendum that finally gave independence to this beautiful but bloodsoaked tiny island nation. The story we plan to tell is of a generation born into war that has now emerged to create a vibrant new culture that is breeding hope and prosperity in Timor-Leste. A collaboration with Australian barrister and human rights advocate Patrick Burgess, and the NGO he co-founded, Asia Justice and Rights, Generation 99 will trace the lives of the artists, film-makers and musicians who have used artistic expression
Ego Lemos.

as a weapon to create a new Timor. With 62 percent of the population under 25 in 2018, Timor-Leste is being led by its Millennials towards an era of increasing prosperity, health standards and literacy, despite 95 percent of the tiny nation's schools being destroyed during the violence of 1999. As well as painting a vivid and exciting portrait of Timor-Leste now, our film will examine the bloody back-stories of child soldiers who became protest singers and symbols of their generation, of musicians persecuted by occupying forces for rallying people behind their songs of hope, of artists jailed for their provocative street creations. We will document the development of a proud and unique Timorese sound - an infectious blend of metal, reggae, rap and melodic vocals with a political message delivered in the local Tetum tongue. So a good place to start on this trip was the FinFest in Maubisse, a festival of local
music and permaculture, co-ordinated by Ego Lemos, who in addition to being the director of Timor-Leste's national permaculture program, is the Timorese John Farnham - its best-loved musician who, at 46, transcends generations with a pleasant mix of pop, country and anthems of hope. If that sounds a little straight, the rest of the card, including "Ottopsy", the leader of Klamar, the country's hottest new band, and Meli Fernandez, co-founder of Galaxy, Timor's leading band for 20 years, was anything but. For days prior to our arrival, the buildup to the wet had intensified, and soon after arriving in the beautiful hill station of Maubisse, the heavens opened. When I asked him why you would put a music festival on a mountain lake-bed in the wettest part of the country, Ego Lemos shrugged and grinned. "It is good to challenge the young people, to make them
see how this country was built." During the Indonesian occupation, Ego's own family spent four years hiding out in the mountains, so he knows of what he speaks, but the kids hunkered down in the mud under leaky tarps probably didn't appreciate the lesson. Yet. Us? Well apart from ruining an expensive pair of boat shoes and some serious charging-up issues in a hut with no power, we loved every minute of it. For the duration of the festival, which is based around the November 28 anniversary of the original declaration of independence from Portugal, Maubisse is alive with music, colour and dance. And the spirit was infectious. More about Timor-Leste next week, and if you want to know more about Generation 99, visit documentaryaustralia.com.au/films/4401/ generation-99-geraco-foun, or like us on Facebook. ●

PORT ADELAIDE COME TO TOWN
U12s victorious.
U12 SCORE A WIN IN COMP U11 TNT Storm v TNT Lightning. Lightning won the toss and sent Storm into bat. Storm came out firing, 50 off the first 5 overs, but once Lightning struck the wickets started to come. Storm finishing on 154, Noah with 4 wickets, Rory 3 and Will 2. Storm batsman knew it was a big task to chase the total, but with the openers not taking any chances it allowed the rest of the batsman to go after runs. Big hitting Rory finishing with 53, the Lightning took out the local derby with 234. U12 Lightning v Coolum away. Coolum won the toss and sent TNT in to bat. Wanting to convert a start, Bailey went big and retired on 49, laying a great platform for the rest of the team with Ollie, Toby and Morgan getting runs. A late collapse saw fill in Eddie aid the returning Bailey get his 50, TNT all out for 173, their best batting performance. Tight bowling from the outset with a great opening spell from Josh, and wickets from Tom, saw the pressure build, and Max taking the final catch saw the boys earn their first win of the year! U12 Storm v Coolum at home. The TNT boys struggled in the field while Coolum
dominated with the bat. Nick 1/10, Daniel took 2 great catches at wickie, and Charlie H's wicket and run out was not enough to stop Coolum reaching 7/185. TNT's top order collapsed, the middle order hung in but it wasn't enough, finishing 8/112, Aedan with 37. U13 Storm v Maroochydore Blue, a top of the table clash with both teams undefeated so far. Maroochydore were put into bat, and following a strong start looked like posting a 200+ total. TNT increased the pressure which slowed the run rate and the wickets fell, Maroochydore bowled out for 152, Andy Kelly 3/22. It was a going to be a tough run chase in the heat but once again the collective batting effort from this team was sensational. Stand out knocks from Tom Harmer 49* and Ethan Slaney 33, to win with 7/169. U14 v Maroochydore White at home, Day 1. TNT batted first and got off to a good start losing only 1 for the first 50. TNT got bogged down in the middle and lost a few wickets through frustration, but held on to put 160 on the board. Jack Caspers scored a quick 30 and Ben Anderson, Lachy
and Kye were solid. TNT took to the field and nabbed a wicket off the first ball, but bowled a little wayward after that to let Maroochydore get to 3/46. The game is evenly poised that TNT must bowl well in early to be a chance next week. U15 v Cooroy/Eumundi at home, Day 1. TNT won the toss and batted, but lost wickets regularly to a good bowling attack and were bowled out for a disappointing 138. Saif Malek top scored on 44, with Dan White 16 , Seamus McDermott 16 and Ben Stewart 14. CE then consolidated with an hour to bat, finishing at 1/67 at stumps, leaving TNT with plenty of work to do next week. U16 v Yandina. Yandina won the toss and elected to bat, and their gun opening batsmen scored a chancy 75 before being caught behind. At 7/128 a low score looked likely but a few missed chances along with good batting saw Yandina finish all out for 206. Jack Saunders bowled a great tight line to take 3/23, Tom Green with a long 12 over spell producing 3/55 with some prodigious turn. A tricky 5 overs were navigated without drama by the openers to see TNT 0/8 at stumps. ●
FAVOURITE SON RETURNS, VOSS VISITS FOR DINNER BY JULIAN PITTS Back to back premiership captain and fearless leader Adam Bovalino will coach the Noosa tigers in 2019. After a four and a half year mining voyage in country WA popular Noosa tiger takes the senior reigns as the tigers look to go one better than season 2018. Bova as he is referred to by all the tiger faithful is a born leader as well as having a presence that for over a decade made him a fierce and compromising opponent. When asked life member Doug Murray said "I'm pretty sure Bova will coach the same way as he played." He demanded effort and a team first attitude as a skipper and that's what he'll want from this playing group. WAVES RELAX THEIR MINDS Mental health experts from Australia and New Zealand trialled surf therapy last week as part of the 2018 Society for Mental Health Research conference held for the first time on the Sunshine Coast and hosted by the University of the Sunshine Coast. USC’s Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience Thompson Institute. USC Youth Mental Health and Neurobiology Professor Daniel Hermens said the conference attracted about 300 top mental health researchers and clinicians including researchers, students, consumers, carers, clinicians and policymakers - who shared the common goal of improving the lives of those affected by mental illness. Delegates get the chance to try surf therapy with Waves of Wellness Foundation chief executive Joel Pilgrim, who was part of the beach mental health session attended by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle during their visit to Bondi Beach, Sydney in October. “Surf therapy is used to assist a range of vulnerable groups, including people living with a mental illness, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, autism and psychosis,” Professor Hermens said. “With a solid line up of international surf therapy experts, it was an incredible opportunity for conference delegates and local community members alike, to see the global innovations in surf therapy.“ ● noosatoday.com.au

IT’S THE FINISH TO A GREAT YEAR BY RON LANE Last Friday evening sensei's, members, support group and parents of the Sunshine Coast Martial Arts Club gathered at the Cooroy Bowls Club for their Awards and Presentation of Trophies Annual Dinner. In his welcome address Head Sensei Bryan Dukas Black Belt 6th Dan payed tribute to the many families now involved in the club. "The family atmosphere that now exists throughout the club is something that we can all be proud of," he said. "In saying this I would like to give a special welcome to the new families that have joined us this year. You the members have made them feel welcome and as a result our club is now one
big happy family." Since their arrival from South Africa four years ago Bryan's wife Anita has played a major support role in the growth of the club. "I also bring to your attention the large numbers of ladies working behind the scenes; their tireless input is now a major factor in our success." The success of this club becomes apparent when we acknowledge the fact that for the last two years in a row this club has been named the Best and Fairest Club in Queensland. This type of award can only be achieved through dedicated team work by all involved. Another point of interest is that when the team represented Queensland at the recent
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
Australian titles selection, this club had the largest representation of members chosen. This is another major achievement as it emphasizes the high standard of the coaching panel working throughout the club. During the evening it was publicly announced that the club has now been accepted as a club member of the World Karate Federation in Japan. Their official badge has now been received by the club. It would be unfair not to acknowledge Head Sensei Bryan Dukas as for him the year has also been one of achievements. While visiting Japan with his club the Japanese elevated him to the rank of 6th Dan and also awarded him his International Referees,
Instructors and Examiners Certificates. The naming of all award recipients would be too many to mention. However there was one whose achievements were of particular note. Her name is Dannica Starkey and this 11yr old student has for three consecutive years won the Australian Kumite (sparring) Gold Medal then in the Oceanic Games took bronze again in Kumite. She finished off by contesting the Pan Pacific Cup where she won silver in the Kata (pattern of movements) and yet another bronze in the Kumite. This quiet well-mannered young lady with a total of 3 gold 1 silver 2 two bronze medals some in International competition is definitely one to watch. ●

GREAT PLACE FOR HOLIDAY FISHING, WITH TREVALLY ABOUT There have been some nice trevally in the river with good numbers throughout Woods Bays, the Ski Runs and Munna Point. Surface lures and fast retrieved slugs have claimed some nice fish, for the bait anglers, small pilchards, white bait and prawns have been working well. The Tewantin stretch of the river has also been producing some nice jacks during the night. Live bait like poddy mullet and herring have been responsible for some great fish. The bream and whiting population are still in good numbers around the river mouth areas, they have been responding well to baits like beach worms and yabbies. Surface lures have been the proving a success on the whiting along with smaller soft plastics for the bream. Brightly coloured soft plastics on 1/6 size jig head has been working well on the flathead, try a super slow roll along the bottom around mud banks and sand banks. With some good weather windows last weekend anglers were heading offshore in force, the mackerel have started to turn up numbers with reefs like Sunshine, North, Halls and Jew Sholes are producing some good fish. Watching for bird activity has been one of the ways to find a school of noosatoday.com.au
feeding fish. Mack tuna and spotties have been feeding on the top with the larger Spanish seeming to hold a little deeper. Slugs cast to the edges of the schools have been a popular way to target the pelagic's another great option is 5 inch jerk shad soft plastics on a fast retrieve. For the angler that did the run out to the Barwon Banks or to the reefs off Double Island have been well rewarded with some great fish coming from the bottom including pearl perch, snapper red emperor sweetlip and cobia, those that fished the bottom at North and Sunshine Reefs were rewarded with some great trout, sweetlip and the odd cobia. On the beaches, fishing the close gutters has seen plenty of dart in good numbers, this is giving the kids a great deal of fun on light outfits. Whiting are also in good numbers with fish around 30 cm mark not uncommon, freshly pulled sandworms or pippies have been the prime baits. Tailor and small jew are still being taken this will only improve as we move into the new moon, fishing large strip baits of mullet or good quality local squid has worked well. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
