‘Carol king’ back in town There’s little need to tune-up Denis Walter’s rich baritone voice ahead of the free concert, Carols in Harmony Square. This Christmas, the popular radio presenter will be singing at seven carols events including flying up to Coolangatta on the Gold Coast. Walter’s seasoned act has graced the 71-year-old Dandenong carols several times including when it used to be staged in Dandenong Park. He is also a well-known presence at Myer Music Bowl’s festive event on Christmas Eve. “The thing I love about carols is groups of people, families, older people, younger people just getting into the spirit of the season. “There’s something about Christmas that feels like the community comes together. “Despite the busyness and rush-around it feels like everyone is on the same page. “It’s the spirit that should be here all year long.” Walter is a fan of Dandenong’s bright Christmas decorations including a giant tree and ‘Merry Christmas’ slogans. He bemoans the sanitised ‘Happy Holidays’ messages seen at other times elsewhere. It was an easy choice for Walter to come back to Dandenong’s carols and entertain its vastly diverse audience. “They are always great events. “People come here from other countries who truly embrace what we’re about “It’s great the City of Greater Dandenong supports carols events. It brings the community together.” It’s a “special thing” to perform or host a carols event, Walter says. The First Noel is his favourite to intone - the well-known carol that builds from a “sensitive

Help Salvos spread hope

Crafty locals have been sewing, drawing and painting their own decorations at Heritage Hill this Christmas. During the fun and festive Thursday night classes participiants have made Christmas baubles, soft felt decorations and traditional wooden decorations. In week one particpants learnt how to make personalised baubles with special messages for friends and family using calligraphy and glitter. Week two was wooden decorations, which participants made by painting, decorating and adding collage with materials like ribbon, fabric and buttons to pre-cut Christmas shapes. Week three was felt decorations. Participants stitched felt shapes together to make beautiful soft decorations using blanket stitch. Week four was mini gifts and letters for the tree using matchboxes, printed and aged papers, ribbons, and calligraphy.

Showing off their felt creations are Samantha Ondrus-Jansen and Naomi Bishop (front) with Alicja Jaesman and Claire Alvarez. 187999

Extended post office hours Bec Harris, Captain Claire Emerton and Isaac Mead encourage everyone to dig deep this Christmas. 187538 6pm on Sunday, December 16, also at The Salvation Army Dandenong. Donate to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal at salvos.org.au/Christmas or by calling 13 SALVOS (13 72 58). Donations can also be made in person at any Westpac branch or at Salvo Stores.

With less than a month until Christmas, Australia Post is keeping its doors open longer. Residents in Dandenong South can visit their local Business Hub weekdays during the extended retail hours of 8am – 6pm until December 21. Australia Post General Manager Post Office Network David McNamara said extended trading hours would give customers more choice and convenience as they send and receive their Christmas gifts in time for the big day. “We know Christmas is a really busy time of the year so we are giving our customers greater flexibility to come in and send all their pres-

ents, or pick them up, when it best suits them,” Mr McNamara said. “With the online shopping boom continuing, we’re delivering record volumes and we want to make sure our customers have convenient access to our products and services to help them get ready for the big day. “Last year we delivered 37 million parcels in December and we’re expecting to exceed that number this year, so it’s all hands on deck at Dandenong South Business Hub.” In November Australia Post announced a record number of additional workers – close to 3,000 – ahead of the busy Christmas period. 12405368-RA51-18

This Christmas, The Salvation Army is encouraging Dandenong locals to connect with their community – whether it is through participating in Christmas activities, giving a hand up to someone in need, or reaching out to the Salvos for help. Christmas is one of the hardest times of year for Australians doing it tough, but Dandenong Salvation Army Officer Captain Claire Emerton says just a small contribution can make a big difference. “For just $29 you can provide food on the table and a present under the Christmas tree to help give hope to someone in need this Christmas,” Captain Emerton said. “At Christmas, the Salvos will serve over 100,000 meals, distribute more than 500,000 gifts and toys and support more than 70,000 families in need." Christmas is the busiest time of year for the Salvos. Not only is The Salvation Army in Dandenong running its annual Christmas Cheer operation, to provide toys and food for those in need, it is also putting on a community carols event and preparing for a special Christmas Day service. On Christmas Day, The Salvation Army is inviting the public to gather to celebrate the hope and joy of Christmas at a service from 10am at The Salvation Army Dandenong, 55 James St, Dandenong. Everyone is welcome to attend. Dandenong locals are also invited to attend The Salvation Army’s Carols in the Carpark at

NBN hits the wall By Cam Lucadou-Wells

2 Bytes director Nick Chiselett, with his sluggish ADSL modem. 188458 concrete cutting was required to build the coaxial lead-in at Mr Chiselett's premises. "This will be conducted in the early new year once an order has been placed. "The end user will be able to place an order with their preferred retailer in the next week." Nearly all of Springvale is ready to connect but a "small percentage" of homes and businesses required "additional work" to

connect, he said. A spokesperson for Communications Minister Mitch Fifield said premises at the boundary of a service area would receive the rollout at different times "by necessity" due to the size and scope of the project. "There will inevitably be premises where delivering the network is more difficult for NBN Co.

"In such cases, NBN Co ... continues work to put in place the required infrastructure that will allow it to 'switch on' the remaining small pockets of premises as soon as it can." NBN Co was still on track to provide access to all homes and businesses by 2020, the spokesperson said. 12405100-RA47-18

In the latest NBN farce, a Springvale businessman has been locked out for months from high-speed broadband available to his nextdoor neighbours. Nick Chiselett has thought of literally punching a hole in the wall and offering to pay for the neighbouring social club's NBN connection in Garnsworthy Street. In mid-year, Mr Chiselett had moved into the offices with a promise of NBN by September. However this was put on hold due to a nationwide freeze on the hybrid coaxial-fibre (HFC) network rollout Bewilderingly, the network is available for 10 shops at the commercial/retail strip but 10 can't get connected. According to NBN Co, the best indication is that he'll get access in the "early new year". "It's quite horrendous," Mr Chiselett said. "At the moment I'd be happy with a really crappy NBN service." Mr Chiselett had plans to expand his software development business 2 Bytes in summer, with the promise of large jobs in the USA and Europe. The NBN was crucial for 'cloud' uploads and internet voice calls as part of doing business around the world. His ADSL II+ internet doesn't cut it. It makes the task of designing a website up to five times slower, for example. Unable to expand on his workforce of six, Mr Chiselett is losing business of up to $100,000 a month. "It would be hard to pick the worst NBN stuff-up but Mr Chiselett's business in Springvale would surely be a contender for that prize," Bruce MP Julian Hill recently told Federal Parliament. "He has got a plan to employ more people in Springvale but the NBN Co cannot get its act together to punch through the wall." A year after the HFC freeze, about 1.3 million premises in NBN-ready areas were still unable to connect, he said. Ironically Mr Chiselett says he was unable to view an online stream of Mr Hill's speech due to poor internet speeds. An NBN Co spokesperson said that heavy

IN BRIEF

Pregnant, homeless couple rob stores By Cam Lucadou-Wells A homeless couple with a child on the way have pleaded guilty to holding up five milk bars in five days while wielding a hatchet, the County Court of Victoria heard. Matthew Euese, 22, and Theresa Manase, 21, both New Zealand born, were charged with four armed robberies and an attempted armed robbery in Dandenong North, Keysborough, Clayton South and Mulgrave in late November 2017. Their traumatised targets were often lone female attendants. On bail at the time, Euese would stand over them with a hatchet while demanding cash from the till and cigarettes. In the last robbery Manase joined in with a stolen knife and a baseball bat found inside the milk bar. The day after the last robbery, Euese and Manase were arrested after a violent attack on a patron and two staff at Spleen Bar in Melbourne on 30 November 2017. Euese punched a bar tender and an inter-

vening patron both in the face. Manase throttled a bar supervisor and threw a full pint glass into her mouth, dislodging two teeth. In sentencing on 3 December, Judge Wendy Wilmoth noted the violence and injuries as well as the immense cost to the robbery victims. In victim impact statements, two of the proprietors told of selling up their business or having plans to get out. They'd reduced opening hours as a result of the robberies. One of them described fearing for her life during the ordeal, and suffering nightmares since. The other, twice victim of armed robberies, since chose to sit in a room at the back of the store and vet customers on CCTV. Judge Wilmoth also noted the couple's "desperate" circumstances as well as their youth and immaturity. At the time, they had just lost both their jobs, been kicked out of two relatives' homes

and were living in a car that had just broken down. They were ineligible for Centrelink benefits and the morning-sick Manase required medical attention. Euese had relapsed into cannabis and ice use. Euese, while awaiting trial, had unusually saved $1200 to compensate the victims as well as worked to support Manase and their child. He had since written apologies to the victims, repaired his family relationships, hadn't relapsed into drug use and immersed himself at church. Judge Wilmoth said his prospects of rehabilitation were good, his remorse genuine. Euese and Manase were facing possible deportation if jailed for 12 months or more. Judge Wilmoth jailed him for nine months with a longer than usual corrections order of five years. The jail term included 22 days remanded in custody. Manase was jailed for 167 days, which was already served in remand, with a three-year corrections order.

Twenty-one councils from NSW and Victoria have joined City of Greater Dandenong’s campaign against income cuts to asylum seekers in the community. The councils, led by Greater Dandenong, launched Back Your Neighbour in Carlton on 4 December. Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades said it was a call for all Australians to “back your neighbour, back your mate, back your colleague and back people arriving in our communities fleeing war and persecution”. The campaign opposes the Australian Government cutting people assessed as “work ready” from $35-a-day Status Resolution Support Service (SRSS) payments. It is thought the changes would directly impact most of the nearly-2000 asylum seekers living in Greater Dandenong, forcing children, families and single adults into destitution and homelessness. “We are all very concerned for the welfare of people seeking asylum and the impact these changes will have, not only financially, but also on their health and wellbeing,” Cr Blades said. Since World War II, 800,000 refugees have arrived in Australia. Many had contributed to the community on every level such as sport, medicine, law, science, research and foods, Cr Blades argued.

A taxi driver has been held up at knifepoint after being ordered to a pick-up address in Kyla Avenue, Dandenong. The cabbie was met by a male wearing a black motorcycle helmet and a female about 7.45pm on Sunday 2 December. The male produced a knife and demanded cash. During the confrontation, the cabbie sustained a small wound to his hand. The two armed robbers fled with $80 cash. The male offender was described as wearing all black. The female was described as about 25 with blonde hair. She was wearing a black hooded jumper and black tracksuit pants. Three males have slashed tyres on 30 vehicles during an early-morning spree of vandalism in Springvale. The unknown offenders were captured on CCTV driving in a light-coloured SUV along Burden Street, Glendale Road and Avondale Street between 2.45am-3.25am on Saturday 1 December. During the drive, they were seen either slashing or stabbing tyres on parked vehicles. On many vehicles, more than one tyre was damaged - which caused significant inconvenience to the owners, Senior Constable Jordan McKenzie of Greater Dandenong CIU said. Any information to Greater Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Campfires lit on Eastlink trail Police are investigating two illegal fires lit on the Eastlink Trail in Joffre Street Noble Park. The fires were lit 300 metres apart approximately 9pm on Saturday 1 December - a day of warm temperatures and strong winds. "It appears that a camp site had been set up where the fires have been lit, and empty alcohol containers were located nearby," Senior Constable Jordan McKenzie of Greater Dandenong CIU said. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, temperatures at nearby Moorabbin Airport reached up to 32° Celsius that day with wind gusts of up to 63 km/h. “We are calling on Australians to tell the Federal Government that we don’t need to cut the SRSS program. We don’t need to put many people - who might otherwise become our doctors, nurses, lawyers, colleagues, friends and neighbours - out on the streets.” The campaign highlights asylum seekers giving back to the community. Figures such as life-saver Ramzi Hussaini, charity cook Nayran Tabiei and photographer Zia Atahi. Victorian Local Governance Association president Marg Attley said the cuts put vulnerable people at further risk of homelessness, social isolation and access to vital services. “For many decades’ migrants, and those who came to Australia fleeing war and prosecution, have contributed to the social fabric of our society. “They made our country what it is today - they are our friends, colleagues, and neighbours and they deserve our support.” In July, Greater Dandenong held a mayoral roundtable on the issue. It was attended by 18 Victorian councils, the Refugee Council of Australia, Monash Health and the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. It led to the establishment of a mayoral taskforce, chaired by Cr Blades. Details: backyourneighbour.com.au or facebook.com/backyourneighbour

Chisholm scoops pool Chisholm Insitute students were a cut above at the recent Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association awards. Ten students cleaned up in the categories of make-up, beauty, hairdressing and barbering. The winners included Dandenong students Georgia Thomas (make-up), Julie Taylor (screen and media specialist make-up) and Georgia Lean (beauty therapy). Harley James Campbell from Barber Town Men's Grooming in Endeavour Hills took home an apprenticeship trophy. A whopping 21 Chisholm students across Dandenong, Berwick and Frankston campuses were nominated at the awards.

Ms Lean, a 22-year-old body tattoo artist from West Gippsland, said she'd struggled with mental health and low self-esteem as a girl. "For a while there I could not see what the future held for me." Then she found her calling. "Even Body Tattooing can mean so much to each individual, whether they are getting a tattoo to honour a loved one or covering up old self harm scars. "For me, it's all about helping people feel comfortable within themselves." Fiona Jowett, a 44-year-old Dandenongbased student and mum of four, took out the beauty therapy diploma encouragement award.

It was one of the best things she could have done, Ms Jowett said. Chisholm services and creative industries general manager Vicki Tuchtan said many of the students had to overcome major challenges to their studies. "To have their efforts recognised by their industry peers is pure joy and a testament to their passion and determination. "Our educators also need to be recognised for their commitment, professionalism and high calibre of training they deliver, inspiring their students to chase their calling."

Lego kids in space race It was a battle of ingenuity at a recent First LEGO League competition at Swinburne University. Students from Dandenong West and Rivergum primary schools were among 40,000 teams of budding scientists around the world taking on an 'Into Orbit' challenge. Their brief was to innovate solutions for outer space exploration using LEGO robots. Kylee Bates, chief executive of co-sponsor Ardoch, says the league promotes problem solving, critical and creative thinking in students from disadvantaged communities. Robotics technology kits, teacher training and STEM resources are provided to the target schools. "As more and more employers begin to value STEM related skills, it's important that all students are given the opportunity to dive headfirst into science, technology, engineering and math," said Paul Anscombe, director of co-sponsor Cummins South Pacific. The league was founded in 1998 challenging kids to research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling and energy.

Minister’s vision of future By Cam Lucadou-Wells Barely pausing from a landslide election campaign, Dandenong's newest cabinet member Gabrielle Williams says the hard work is in front of her. Her first days as a Minister were a blur of briefings and meetings with new advisers and departments as well as a first Cabinet meeting. Now it's time to deliver in the portfolios of Prevention of Family Violence, for Women and for Youth which are at "the heart of the Government agenda", Ms Williams says. "We've got runs on the board but there's more to do." Top of her agenda is delivering on the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Family Violence. About $2.5 billion had been invested by the Government on that path, including the rollout of 'Orange Door' safety hubs. Many recommendations are still in progress, many are still to come. "Yet we have to do it in a thorough way," Ms Williams said. "It's not just about ticking things off for the sake of it, but for the outcomes to be realised." Part of that was ensuring services work in the best possible way. The other part is "long term cultural change", particularly in attitudes to women. "We can't talk about prevention of family violence without talking about attitudes to family violence." Ms Williams' Twitter feed references a recent example of why "things have to change". She links to the presentation of the prestigious Ballon d'Or to Norwegian soccer star Ada Hegerberg, in which she was asked to twerk on stage. There's more room for equal representation in workplaces, sports clubs and decision making at all levels of the community, Ms Williams said.

Gabrielle Williams, centre, with Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades and Victoria Police Superintendant Paul Hollowood on the recent Walk Against Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Family Violence. 187949 Some gender-equality issues are not yet obvious to people. They're accepted as the norm in some areas. The Andrews' gender-equal Cabinet with 11 women and 11 men was a strong statement in tackling old notions. Women ministers were appointed traditionally 'male' portfolios, such as roads and energy. "It gives us a really exciting opportunity to tackle some of those big issues that are often

driven by women and impact on women in our community," Ms Williams said. She pointed to the "bold vision" of female ministers in the last term. Such as Health Minister Jill Hennessy's spearheading of controversial reform such as voluntary-assisted dying and medicinal cannabis. The reforms were divisive but earned Ms Hennessy great respect for her political bravery, Ms Williams said.

Now the Government was set to deliver on its promised "positive" agenda in health, education, infrastructure and tackling congestion, she said. There was the injection of fresh energy and voice from new MPs unexpectedly winning Liberal seats in the Eastern suburbs. "There's an enormous amount of excitement in our team ... over what can be achieved in the next four years."

Police hunt road rage hit-run driver

Zaynab Salimi, Tamanna Hussaini and Salima Hussaini meet Pascal Neitzner at the SELLEN forum. 186701

Police are appealing for witnesses following a hit-run collision at Lyndhurst on Saturday 1 December. Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit detectives say police understand two vehicles were driving north towards Dandenong when the drivers became involved in an argument on Glasscocks Road about 6pm. The driver of a Volkswagen sedan and his passenger exited their vehicle on Glasscocks Road and approached the second vehicle, believed to be a black SUV. The 34-year-old driver of the Volkswagen sedan was struck by the second vehicle and taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition. The black SUV left the scene and is yet to be located. The male driver is perceived to be of Pacific Islander appearance and was wearing a large straw hat. Investigators are appealing for any witnesses who saw the collision or any driver who may have dash cam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or they can file a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au

Driven for success By Cam Lucadou-Wells For young people looking for a role model, look no further than the very driven Pascal Neitzner. The Berwick race-car driver and Ventura mechanic has had plenty of knockbacks but never lost heart. His motto is persist and you will succeed. Such was his steely resolve to stay toil hard and save, he owned his first house at 21 as well as paid off three cars. Now at 22, he was the keynote speaker at a migrant youth employment forum hosted by the South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN). "My biggest tip is be yourself, be humble and your interest in the job will shine through," Mr Neitzner told young job hopefuls. There is no doubt persistence is needed for young job seekers.

According to census figures, Dandenong's unemployment rate is in double figures. Youth unemployment is about 15 per cent. Several job seekers at the forum told of the numerous job applications they'd made for little success. Well, as Mr Neitzner revealed, he had gone through the same roller-coaster ride. He told how he arrived with family from Germany as a four-year-old without a word of English. But he was driven to learn, even while putting up with school bullying as he struggled to pick up English and maths. When in his teens, he tried a baking apprenticeship before realising it was more of a "hobby" than a profession for him. Mr Neitzner started VCAL not knowing what he wanted to do. He and his resume got knocked back "countless times" as he searched

for a part-time job. But he kept going until a Nando's restaurant gave him a shot. He rose to team leader, thriving on the responsibility. Finding a mechanic's apprenticeship proved just as hard. He searched for a year before he was offered an auto-electrical apprenticeship by Ventura. Grabbing the chance with both hands, he was awarded the BusVic Apprentice of the Year. "I wanted to be the best apprentice I could be." He's also followed his dream, rising to being a top-5 grade A driver in the Victorian Hyundai Excel racecar series. His car is sponsored by Ventura, who he says is everything you could want as an employer. "It's like a family environment. "I love working (there)."

The majority rules for Dandenong Stadium By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Team 11’s hands out for $1.25m

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council has been asked to tip in $1.25 million towards the Team 11 ALeague bid, if successful. Last month, Team 11 requested that Greater Dandenong and City of Casey each purchase 1.25 million equity shares in the club. The $2.5 million funding would help establish the A-League and W-League clubs, as well as go toward the A-League licence fee of up to $15 million. In return, the two councils would appoint an extra director to the club’s board of up to 13 members. Currently, Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia councils are represented by Greater Dandenong Business group manager Paul Kearsley on the board. Councillor Jim Memeti said the move would make the councils part-owners of the club. “It shows investors that we’re dead serious about this commitment. “We believe in them and we’re putting our money where our mouth is.” Cr Memeti said the club was also backed by sufficient private investors such as Jayco

owner Gerry Ryan and developers Intrapac and Pellicano. A council report in favour of the move stated that Greater Dandenong could receive a return on its shares, in the form of increased share prices and dividends. “If Council provided the funding by way of a grant, whether or not conditional, it would have no means of receiving such a return.” Cr Memeti said besides the dividends, the council will make its money back “over and over” due to the tourism and jobs boost. The A-League team would be a boon for grassroots football participation, the region’s economic growth and social cohesion, according to the report. The investment, less than 1 per cent of the council’s $139 million annual revenue, is unbudgeted by the Council. It will be referred to the council’s mid-year budget review. Councillors are set to decide on the funding on 10 December. It would depend on the success of Team 11’s bid. Football Federation Australia is expected to announce the two successful bids soon after a board meeting on 12 December.

Dandenong Stadium is a winner with most of the public - except for some living closest to the proposed A-League venue. The $150 million stadium to be built at Cheltenham and George streets won a 74 per cent approval rating from 184 survey respondents, according to a Greater Dandenong Council community consultation. Many stated they were likely to attend the stadium, which is hoped to host a South-East A-League side from 2019-20. However, 56 per cent of 65 local resident 'feedback forms' opposed the stadium. Those in favour raved about the boost to Dandenong's profile, jobs and community cohesion, as well as its proximity to Dandenong railway station. Those against were concerned about the use of ratepayers funds, insufficient parking, traffic congestion and noise and amenity issues for residents near the stadium. A council report on the consultation stated

that parking and traffic management would have to be "carefully considered" in the stadium's design. Noise, safety and amenity issues in nearby residential areas would also need to be taken into account. Councillor Jim Memeti said overall, the results were a strong endorsement of the stadium. He said parking would be catered for by central Dandenong's multi-level car parks, otherwise empty on Saturday nights. "You also have to factor in the train - a lot of people will come in on public transport." Most residents were supportive of the stadium, with Cheltenham Road creating a large buffer from the housing estates in the south. The stadium is contingent on Team 11 winning an A-League licence, as well as state and federal funding. The A-League licence bid is expected to be decided by Football Federation Australia soon after a 12 December board meeting.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 12 December 1918 Dandenong Agricultural Show Governor-General attends The show held on Thursday last on the local showgrounds will go down in the annals of the Dandenong Agricultural Society as a record for an event of its kind - not only did it eclipse its predecessors in attendance and the number of entries received, but there was a marked superiority in the ring events and the quality of the exhibits. The presence of His Excellency, the Governor General (Sir R Muro Ferguson) may have been partly responsible for the increase in the attendance.

The Dandenong branch of Carry On movement is appealing for a local family to provide a holiday for a ward living in an orphanage. The 14 year old boy is intelligent, he won a Government scholarship this year - and well mannered. "I have known the boy all his life and can assure anyone that he is a very happy and polite lad." Mr Alan Lind of Carry On told the Journal. We would like the holiday to begin as early as possible - today or tomorrow if it can be arranged - and we are hoping a local family who will be having a holiday themselves might be able to help. "Naturally company of his own age would be very much appreciated and as the lad is Catholic, we hope it would be possible for him to attend Mass each Sunday."

14 December 1998 Road rage 'a worry' Road rage incidents are rising at an alarming level in Greater Dandenong a Springvale detective has warned. Detective Senior Constable Corey De Silva of Springvale CIB said the vicious attack on an elderly man in Noble Park least week was the third road rage incident he had investigated in the past month. Detective De Silva described last Tuesday's incident as a "cowardly attack by a crazed axe-man." The victim 68 was travelling west along Heatherton Road at 1.30pm when he noticed another man driving a brown or cream Holden yelling at him. When the man pulled up at a red light in Corrigan Road his attacker got out of his car and produced a tomahawk or similar instrument. The

If you can afford to own a pet you can afford the one off cost of desexing. Council should similarly be cracking down on those that don't register their pets. It isn't expensive in the overall scheme of pet ownership. Or do they not take responsibility for their animal welfare either? What is wrong with expecting people to take responsibility?

Tapping into the market By Cam Lucadou-Wells For many, making beer sounds like the perfect job. Sue and Dale Messina have poured themselves into the reality. Their own craft brewhouse and bar BoJack Brewing has just opened opposite the Dandenong Showgrounds in Bennet Street. The bar is an inviting cool cave of rustic recycled timbers and street-art murals. There's four beers on tap and pizzas, local cheese and smoked-meat platters and kid's treats on the menu. As well, there's locally-sourced wines, gin, Kaiju cider and a punchy 8 per cent-alcohol lemonade on offer. Out the back is the lab, a shiny German Braumeister brewery where the yeasty magic happens. Here Dale conjures a summer ale, an American pale ale dubbed 'Trump Card', a Germankolsch-style draught and an intriguing 'Calypso' hazy IPA imbued with passionfruit. This menu will change with the seasons, with

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL stouts unveilled in the winter. A real point of difference is the take-away one-litre Crowler. Choose your beer and it's filled and canned at the bar. It started when Sue gave Dale a home-brew kit for Christmas seven years ago. Things grew organically from there. Guided by his palate, the meticulous Dale refined the art of beer chemistry. Like most amateurs' first batch, it was average. But early on, Dale knew he'd love to make a career out of it. "I loved creating something I enjoy - there's nothing better than that." Then his recipes started winning awards.

Bags full of care given All ages are chipping in for an It's In The Bag campaign. St Anthony's Primary School staff and students were among the enthusiastic donors, contributing beautifully decorated bags of toiletries and personal care items for women. They also donated men's toiletries and personal care items for St Vincent de Paul charity.

"Students and their families have been extremely generous in bringing in donations and showing compassion for others in need," spokesperson Deana Portia said. The drive also raised awareness for people doing it tough approaching Christmas, she said. Noble Park CWA also donated a huge 20 handbags of womens products for the It's In the Bag campaign, which is supported by Bunnings.

Students were all smiles when the hand-made benches arrived at St Francis de Sales Primary School.

St Francis de Sales Primary School has received an early Christmas gift thanks to the hard working efforts of St John's Regional College VCAL students. Students from the College recently presented a picnic bench to the school which was an opportunity to share their trade skills with younger students. Making furniture also helps the students work towards a certificate II in Parks and Gardens before they leave high school. St Francis de Sales Primary School spokeswoman Sandi said: "Our partnership means that the SFS students get to work with the St

Johns students on a regular basis and share their knowledge with each other." "We also have created a partnership with St John's College Dandenong for our community garden. It is giving them a chance to get their VCAL students out of the classroom and into the community, while it helps us to build a pathway for our students to our secondary feeder school." Jennifer Witherdan and Brooke Mole from the Parents and Friends Association were also present to see the handing over of the benches. Students Alex Avedesian and Richi Mathew presented a certificate of appreciation to St John's Regional College

Dramas from life choices By Cam Lucadou-Wells The Smashed Project is proof that learning can be entertaining - even on the serious issue of underage drinking. Theatre-in-education group Gibber Australia has visited Killester College and Lyndhurst Secondary College as part of a national tour that's reached 140 schools and 30,000 Year 8 and 9 students. Students don't want to be lectured on "this stuff", says Gibber Australia chief executive Tim Watt. "It talks in a language they understand, and in a way that entertains and engages them." The show aims for relevance. It portrays "pretty ordinary" teen characters in a slice of life, tackling the pressures to "fit in" and to "look cool". The script is regularly updated with the language of the schoolyard. "If it's unbelievable, they're not going to go for it," Mr Watt said.

The play ends with an accident that has long-term consequences. The students then take part in interactive workshops, examining the choices made in the play's "sliding doors" moments. Effectively, they're advising each other on the dangers and the consequences, Mr Watt said. Months down the track, sometimes the actors get a hint of the impact they have. Such as a student in the audience who stops her binge drinking and summons the courage to seek help. In a post-audience survey, 85 per cent said they were unlikely to drink alcohol underage. But overall, the stats aren't as bad as people think. According to official surveys, less underage Australians were drinking or taking part in the binge culture of generations gone by, Mr Watt said. "The younger generation are taking on board the message about the risks of alcohol."

The Smashed Project has visited Greater Dandenong schools as part of a national tour.

A five-year-old's passion for art has inspired a classroom of friends at Robin's Nest Early Learning Centre, Noble Park. According to her teachers, Noura is known for her endless creative expression. She converts recycled materials into art, constantly drawing, painting and talking about her ideas. Her classmates followed suit, creating a mighty collection of works for the inaugural Robin's Nest art show on 23 November. The critics (aka the parents) loved the show. Works were put up for sale, and raised funds for art materials and pottery facilities. "We believe that through the arts children develop a creative mind and are able to express themselves through the many different languages, enhancing their overall development," spokesperson Nicole Whatman said.

Our Olivia takes prize with mystery

We Care's Kelsey Richards and Chisholm student Steph Myers get ready for Helping Hand Day. 188117

By Brendan Rees

Showing care

A Lyndhurst Primary School student was grinning from ear to ear after she was named the winner of a national literary prize. Grade 5 student Olivia says she couldn't believe it when her teacher told her she had taken out the Oxford Australian Children's Word of the Year Competition for her age group. "I really enjoy reading mystery books and I especially love stories that keep you guessing till the very end so I thought that it would be a good challenge to write my own mystery story," Olivia said. The competition required students a piece of free writing up to 500 words which could be creative, factual, funny or serious. After countless hours reviewing hundreds of entries, Olivia's spooky piece impressed the judges. "I couldn't believe that out of all the entries they had chosen my story," Olivia said. Mum Lyndal Argaet said she was proud of her daughter after watching her for weeks bring the story together. "She spent a lot of time editing the story to make sure she didn't exceed the word limit. It was a wonderful surprise that she won and we're all very proud of her achievement," she said.

Christmas is a time for celebration, but for some families it is a time where they struggle to celebrate, give gifts to their children and come together as a family. Families who find themsevles financially stretched this Christmas can take advantage of We Care Community Service's Helping Hand Day. During the day We Care distributes food hampers, good quality clothing, toys, toiletries, household items and other essential items free of charge to members of the community in need of support and assistance during the festive season. Each year We Care assists thousands of people in the Dandenong community with material goods - all of which are given away free. "All the items we receive are donated to us or purchased by We Care and then given away to help families who are struggling during these hard times," said spokesperson Kelsey Richards. The event is open to any member of the public who holds a Healthcare or Pension card. Helping Hand Day also includes fun activities for the whole family including a free sausage sizzle and kids' activities. Helping Hand Day will be held on Saturday 15 December, between 10am and 12noon, at 307 Gladstone Road, Dandenong North.

Olivia's writing creativity has earned her a national literacy award. 188326 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Controversy, runs galore By Nick Creely It was a round of Twenty20 action that simply had it all, centuries, class bowling and fielding, a draw, and even a mankad. In a battle of the two undefeated sides in Group C, North Dandenong and Beaconsfield at Perc Allison Oval on Wednesday 5 December, it came down to one final controversial moment off the last ball of the match to decide the result. With one to win, one wicket left and just one ball remaini ng, the Tigers' gun allrounder Matt Golding mankaded the Maroons, and the umpire subsequently raised his finger, much to the displeasure of the visiting side. A mankad - being the bowler running out the non-striker for straying outside of his crease during his run-up - is arguably the most controversial mode of dismissal in cricket. But skipper Alex Roberts withdrew the appeal after realising that Maroons were only playing with 10 players, and the visitors eventually hit a two of the final ball to secure the points and remain undefeated. After winning the toss and batting, the Tigers scrapped their way to 6/127 off their 20, with Golding (78 not out) the only batsman to really get going, with Matin Sultani (1/27), Austin Heldt (0/12), Asfan Thajudeen (1/19), Akshay Ballal (2/38) and Muharjithan Thedchanamoorthy (2/28) doing a fine job against a quality middle order. Heldt (23) and Ballal (46) combined nicely after the loss of an early wicket, before the home side pegged things back through the efforts of marquee Fred Klaassen (2/15), Roberts (2/28) and Callan Tout (2/28) but managed to bring the game to the final over, where they eventually got the job done. Elsewhere, Buckley Ridges all-rounder Susa Pradeep went berserk, compiling an extraordinary 130 not out as the Bucks eased past Lynbrook at Park Oval. Pradeep showcased his abundance of class to walk off the field with 12 fours and 10 sixes in a 64-ball epic, including 33 off the final over, as the ball flied to all parts, and even hit a car side mirror. It's Pradeep's first Twenty20 century at the club, and his third overall down at Park oval. Out of his 130, 108 came in boundaries. His side eventually finished off with an ominous score of 5/200, with the Lakes scoring 6/112 in reply. Kaushalya Weeraratne also belted a ton for Heinz Southern Districts in a thumping win against Silverton. The star Sri-Lankan was in imposing touch against the Bakers with a glorious 117, with the Cobras racking up 4/226. Weeraratne's brutal innings featured nine fours and nine sixes. Michael 'Slick' Davies also crunched 43,

There was plenty of tension between North Dandenong and Beaconsfield last Wednesday evening. 188466 as he continues his brilliant form. The Bakers offered little resistance with the bat despite Dale Weston scoring 37, with the Cobras skittling the visitors for 82. Jack Philpin (2/13), Davies (2/13), Suraj Randiv (2/4) and Craig Milne (2/8) all took multiple wickets. Craig Slocombe also wound back the clock in a vintage display for Springvale South against Parkmore Pirates. The Bloods legend churned out a brilliant 97 before being bowled, including five monster sixes down at Alex Nelson Reserve. In his first Twenty20 of the season, the champion bat was in no mood to waste time, helping his side to 5/187, with Malinga Bandara (36) and Brayden Sharp (31 not out) also in the runs. The Pirates were undone by a brilliant spell by Andrew Staude (3/8) and marquee

Akshat Buch (2/23), restricted to 9/94 off 20 overs. In other matches, Narre South (1/64) thumped Parkfield (60), St Brigid's/St Louis (2/120) had the better of Springvale (114), Narre Warren (8/119) and Cranbourne (119) drew, Berwick (3/100) eased past Doveton (5/99), Mordialloc (3/99) defeated Doveton North (8/97), Dingley (6/131) beat Berwick Springs (7/128), St Mary's (5/137) were too good for Dandenong West (9/73), and Narre North (6/139) upset Hallam Kalora Park (5/135). With one round of the Twenty20 home and away season left, the top eight sides are: Berwick, Springvale, Springvale South, Mordialloc, North Dandenong, Heinz Southern Districts, Buckley Ridges and Narre South. The final round before finals will be played on 19 December.

The Maroons kept their unbeaten run alive with a thrilling win. 188466

Power signing for Eagles spreads wings By Nick Creely Big Piva has landed at Power Reserve. Piva Wright, the former Richmond rookie and Dandenong Stingray has put pen to paper at the Doveton Eagles in Southern Football League Division 2, and it's sure to keep plenty of defenders up at night throughout 2019. More recently, Wright, 25, plied his trade with Noble Park in the powerful Eastern Football League, topping the goal kicking for the Bulls with 38 majors in a terrific season in Division 1 for the power forward. Doveton Eagles president Shane McGrath said that the club was thrilled to welcome in someone with a quality character, and expects the high profile recruit to settle in well. "We're thrilled, he's a local guy who works at the local primary school, so it's been a really community focus for us - he ticks a lot of boxes, that's for sure," he said. "To pick up a quality player is fantastic for us, and what we want to do." 22 STAR JOURNAL

|

Despite Noble Park desperate to hold on to the power forward, McGrath said that Wright was keen to play with some mates. "It all happened really quickly - he's got some friends around the club, so that always helps when you get to play with mates," he said. The Eagles have managed to lure big names such as Nick Battle, Ryan Hendy, Darren Sheen and Russell Robertson to the club, and McGrath said it points to the culture and brand of footy that's been established at the club. "We've worked really hard to be attractive to players wanting to come in, and that's (signing Wright) justification, i guess," he said. "As a club, we've got high ambitions - we want to improve our standards, and Piva brings it in that regard, so we're thrilled." The Eagles - who were runners-up in Div 2 this season - have also announced Scott Irvine, a wingman who has played with Kilsyth and Seville, highly rated tall forward Jye Siegersma,

Monday, 10 December, 2018

who also comes across from Kilsyth, as well as dynamic half-back Andrew Ray from Narre Warren, and will be gearing up for yet another assault at a premiership. "We've added some other quality players, and we're all about bringing in quality people too," he said. "Andy Ray has Southern experience and dominated div 1 a few years ago, and Jye and Scott are great footballers who have put work and personal life before footy the last few years, and they are now more settle personally, so are looking to change their focus to footy a bit more. "We had a focus on outside leg speed and foot skills, so we've got a bunch of new faces down at the club, so we'll announce a few more, but we're pleased to keep most of our playing list." The Eagles are also keen to start an Under 19s side for 2019. If anyone is interested, contact Shane McGrath on 0466 459 360.

Ballal rips the Bears apart By Nick Creely

Hallam Kalora Park’s Chris Pereira bowls Suraj Randiv during his spell of 4/32 on Saturday. 188526 Ian Daniel (3/17), Dylan Campbell (2/23) and Liam Bence (2/30) - skittled the visitors, rolling them for just 135 in the 38th over. Incredibly, after the Bloods’ opening pair, no batsmen scored double figures, including Steven Spoljaric, who made a surprise duck. In reply, Ian Daniel (97 not out) showcased his abundance of class to completely blow the Bloods away,

helping his side reach the total with just one wicket down. Hallam Kalora Park, meanwhile, is now inside the top four for the first time this season after a comfortable win over bottom placed HSD. A disciplined bowling display, led by Chris Pereira (4/32), saw the Hawks restrict the Cobras to 9/140 after 40, with Michael Davies fighting hard with an unbeaten 47.

A real challenge awaits the Panthers By Nick Creely The challenge is set for Dandenong after an epic century to Melbourne skipper Matthew Brown on Saturday gave the Panthers a tough chase next week. In a surprising decision, the Panthers sent the Demons in to bat at the Albert Ground in the Victorian Premier Cricket clash, and after a solid start to the home side, the decision to bowl seemed the right call after a double strike had the reigning premiers in a strong position. Blake Thomson (38) and Brown absorbed plenty of pressure to put together a 43-run partnership, and from there, batting just got easier for the Dees. Despite some fine bowling by James Nanopoulos (3/68), Brown began to find his flow, taking apart the visitors’ attack with a class display of batting. With Jack Harper (49), Brad Melville (21) and Sean Sturrock (21) batting around the skipper, the Dees racked up the runs - particularly late in the day - to finish on an imposing

Brown walked off the ground with a 157 brilliant runs next to his name, a knock that was compiled over 267 balls, and included 16 fours and three sixes. final ton against Fitzroy Doncaster, ending a lean spell of runs. The opening partnership of Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth will clearly be the key for the Panthers when play resumes next Saturday, with the middle order of Lincoln Edwards, Ed Newman and Cam Forsyth also needing a lift if the visitors are to pull off the tricky chase. In the seconds, meanwhile, the returning Peter Cassidy (99) fell narrowly short of a brilliant century in his return game as the Panthers racked up 9/340. Cassidy - who will almost certainly force his way back into the first XI next round after returning from an extended time in the UK combined with the talented Dane Heverin (75) after coming together at 6/143, putting on a brilliant 150-run stand that saw the home side reach an impenetrable position at stumps. Josh Slater was also in the runs with a well made 65.

WHAT’S ON this week

Despite taking the game until the very last over, the Hawks got to the target without much fuss, with Jordan Hammond (53) leading the way and his side took the points with four wickets left in the shed. And Buckley Ridges (7/175) held off St Mary’s (9/166) at Carroll Reserve to surge 10 points clear at the top of the ladder.

1124822-CB12-14 12372494-ACM47-17

North Dandenong star Akshay Ballal is emerging as one of the DDCA’s most prized matchwinners. In yet another stunning performance on Saturday - once again against the inconsistent Berwick side at home in Turf 1 - Ballal ripped apart the seasoned Bears’ batting order to set up a sensational win, and left the Maroons just percentage from third spot. After an aggressive cameo from Declan Fowler (45) lifted the home side to 158 after winning the toss and batting, it was always going to be a hard ask defending against a batting order featuring the in-form duo Nathan Pilon and Jordan Cleland, as well as skipper Matthew Chasemore. A rapid start saw the visitors swiftly notch 33 for the first wicket, but that’s where the home side began to fight back into the contest. Despite Chasemore’s (61 not out) grit and determination to guide his side to victory, Ballal produced a stunning spell, snaring 5-14 and tearing apart the middle and top order to leave the visitors shell shocked and staring down the barrel of another tough loss. In Round 1, Ballal’s 110 with the bat proved the downfall of the Bears at Arch Brown, so he’s starting to cause plenty of nightmares for Chasemore’s side. Eventually the Bears were shot out for 128 in the 34th over, with Muharjithan Thedchanamoorthy (3/28) also continuing his strong form. Elsewhere, Mordialloc kept its season alive with a complete domination of premiership fancy Springvale South at Ben Kavanagh, clawing off the bottom of the table. The Bloodhounds produced their most frightening performance since last year’s grand final win, overcoming a solid start and taking complete control. After Bloods opening pair Nathan King (41) and Michael Vandort (57) got off to a fine start, the Bloodhounds - led superbly by
