MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk It was great to catch up with Warwick-born professional bull rider Lachlan Slade for this week's cover story (see pages 6 and 7). Lachlan is one of the rising stars of the sport of rodeo in Australia and like many Aussie cowboys he's also spending time on the rodeo circuits in North America, where the prize money tends to be more lucrative. The reality is that cowboys in Australia cannot make a full-time living out of their chosen sport, in the same way other professional athletes can. They need to have a 'day job' - and a supportive employer if they chose to head to the United States and Canada. That said, it's great to be able to report that rodeo bodies like PBR Australia are working hard to take rodeo to a wider Australian audience and to increase corporate sponsorship, which in turn leads to bigger prize money offered at Australian events. Our home-grown rodeo competitors are passionate about and committed to their sport - they take a professional approach to it and they train as hard any other athlete competing at the top levels. As interesting as it must be to travel overseas - especially when you're young and have no ties - it would be great to be able to think Australian professional rodeo could provide our cowboys with a viable full-time career down the track. SOLAR FARM HANDOVER The Southern Downs Regional Council is talking up the controversial solar farm planned for the Sladevale valley north of Warwick, claiming the $125 million project will create more than 100 jobs. A statement released by the council last week announced that the University of Queensland (UQ) had officially taken over the project from original proponent Terrain Solar and that Lendlease would be the lead contractor on the site, with construction to begin in "early 2019". The council approved the project despite strenuous objections both from locals in the Freestone, Sladevale and Mount Tabor areas and from the wider Warwick community. Residents said the 300-acre site off Freestone Road is prime agricultural land and similar solar farms have been refused by other regional councils on the basis of the loss of such lands. Other objections included the visual blight 250,000 solar panels will cause in the picturesque valley - highly visible from the highway leading into Warwick from the

north - and health and stormwater concerns. In June Southern Downs councillors voted in favour of extending the potential life of the solar farm approved from 25 to 30 years. The request for the extension by Terrain Solar was made after the overall project was approved by councillors at an earlier special meeting held on Wednesday 6 June. The same day the Free Times revealed online that a deal had been done between Terrain Solar and the University of Queensland for the university to take over the solar farm at the start of construction. Voting in favour of the application by Terrain Solar at the special meeting on 6 June were Mayor Tracy Dobie, Deputy Mayor Jo McNally and Councillors Yve Stocks, Rod Kelly and Sheryl Windle. Those in the 'no' camp were Councillors Vic Pennisi, Cameron Gow, Marika McNichol and Neil Meikejohn. In the council statement last week announcing the UQ takeover Mayor Dobie said 'Warwick Solar Farm' is "a significant project which will generate jobs and diversify the region's economy".

"The Warwick Solar Farm will generate more than 100 jobs for the Southern Downs and I encourage all local businesses to take the opportunity to become involved," Cr Dobie said. "This is a huge $125M project that will take a year to complete, bringing a major boost to the economy during the construction phase which is a huge benefit for the Southern Downs. "Council wants as many local businesses and contractors as possible to be involved in the project." The statement also said construction of the solar farm will "require skills across a range of industries and trades including, among others, concrete work, fencing, site security, plant and equipment hire and craneage". "The detailed design and construction phase of the Warwick Solar Farm is due to commence in early 2019 with the solar farm expected to be complete and generating energy by early 2020," the statement said. A Lendlease 'contractors session' was held last Tuesday night, 11 December, at Warwick Town Hall. ●

The Granite Belt Community Association (GBCA) delivered its detailed business case on de-amalgamation to Queensland Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe last Monday 10 December. The government has said that if the business case stacks up - and deamalgamation will not financially disadvantage the Stanthorpe community the matter will be put to a region-wide vote. In other words, all residents of the current Southern Downs Regional Council area would get to say "yes" or "no" to a return to separate Warwick and Stanthorpe/ Granite Belt councils. No timeframe has yet been announced by the government on how long it will take to assess the business case. GBCA president Rev Alan Colyer told the Free Times last week the group was "pleased with the progress of our investigations and we thank Lawrence Springborg and the Project Steering Committee for their efforts". ●

COVER STORY

THE LIFE OF THE

COWBOY BY JEREMY SOLLARS

L

achlan Slade says being a professional cowboy in Australia today requires the same level of commitment shown by any top-level athlete - and you have to be prepared to travel overseas to turn your dreams into reality. The Warwick-born bull rider is these days based in Tamworth where he has a 'day job' as a roofer, but just about every other weekend you'll find him at a rodeo somewhere around the country, and part of the year on the US and Canada professional bull riding circuit. At 24, Lachlan has had more than his fair share of close scrapes competing in what is generally agreed to be the most dangerous sport in the world - that of climbing aboard a 1000 kilogram bucking bull and attempting to stay on for the magical eight seconds. He's had broken fingers and concussions and has screws in one of his ankles, but it's all

in a day's work for an up-and-coming cowboy. Lachlan spoke to the Free Times a few days after the recent PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Grand Finals event in Townsville where a nasty fall during his second ride on the Friday night saw him out for the rest of the big event. "I got thrown a bit awkwardly and I landed with my full body weight on my leg and my spur went into my leg," Lachlan said. "I needed six stitches and I was out for the rest of the finals - it wasn't how I'd planned it. "It was a bit lame really." The young cowboy is wrapping up his first "dedicated" full year on the Aussie PBR circuit and spent the middle of the year in North America, to where he plans to return for several months in early 2019, thanks to a supportive boss who himself was a roughrider back in the day. Like other young Australian riders, Lachlan - who started off in open bull riding

Lachlan Slade competing in the PBR national finals in Townsville in 2017. For many young Aussie cowboys, the big money is to be made on the North American rodeo circuit, but major efforts are being made to lift prize money and the profile of the sport of rodeo across Australia. (PBR Australia image).

at the age of 16 - accepts it's not possible to earn a full-time living from rodeo in this country, and to rake in the big dollars you need to jump on a plane. "I had a pretty good run in the US and Canada this year - if you spend three or four months over there you can compete in anywhere between 25 and 30 separate events, you're riding just about every day," Lachlan said. "It's a lot of fun travelling over there and it's what you have to do if you want to really make it in the sport. "Everyone over there loves rodeo, it's part of the culture. "Back home I generally do a minimum of two rodeos a month - but sometimes you can be competing for 10 or so weekends in a row. "This year I've probably made around $20,000 on the PBR circuit in Australia that's competing at every PBR event. "I'd love to make it a full-time thing here. "In the US you can make $40,000 in one

event and even with some of the smaller rodeos there can be a prize money pool of $100,000." Lachlan's house-mate in Tamworth is Aussie rodeo legend Jason O'Hearn, who is still going at the age of 39, although the retirement age for professional bull riders tends to be in the early to mid-30's. When he's not working on a roof-top Lachlan lives and breathes bull riding, spending most of his spare time on practice bulls and on a powered barrel he shares with Jason. "My advice to young guys who want to get into bull riding and rodeo is it's all or nothing," he said. "It's no different to any other professional sport - you've got to train at your hardest and like any athlete you have to be very focussed on your fitness. "It takes real commitment. "The bulls are getting better and better and you have to give it everything you've got."

Warwick-born bull rider Lachlan Slade is a rising star on the Australian rodeo scene.

Bronc riding action at the 2018 Warwick Rodeo.

FOCUSED ON THE FUTURE PBR Australia general manager Glen Young said increasing prize money for Australian cowboys was the organisation's main aim, along with increasing the profile of the sport of bull riding nationwide. "Our main aim has and always will be to continue to increase prize-money for our competitors," Glen told the Free Times. "In 2018 alone we have paid out over $1.2 million in prize-money across our Australian Events. "For us it's about remaining consistent across all platforms from the shows and experiences we deliver to our attendees, to how we engage and work our partnerships. "The Australian sporting market is very competitive when it comes to sponsorships and the PBR fits in a very unique space that a lot of other sports and entertainment products can't compete with. "We have a tour that runs in four states and soon to be six when we expand into Western Australia and the Northern Territory. "It gives sponsors a full calendar coverage from February through to December and hits both the large metro cities through to regional markets. "We are continually evolving to maintain competitive in the market, whether it be

with our new Western Lifestyle digital broadcast network 'Ride Pass' that allows our events to be seen live and on demand by Western Culture Sports fans world-wide, enhancing and increasing our FTA and PPTV Broadcast Coverage not only here in Australia but also overseas. "The PBR is quite fortunate as we have tours in Brazil, Mexico, USA, Canada and Australia, so a lot of multi-nationals are signing up for all our tours, such as Monster Energy. "The New PBR Mobile Stadium has been one of our best investments as it not only delivers a consistent fan experience but also consistent partner activation and hospitality experiences. "For us we are heavily invested in evolving and adapting in order to remain competitive for the corporate dollar. "In 2019 we'll see the launch of the PBR State of Origin Series and planning is underway to return the PBR Global Cup in the very near future. "And as our prize-money increases the Australian Tour will see more and more international athletes come to compete as our events will be on par with the other international majors. "Australia is actually rated as the number two tour in the world for the PBR. "We offer more prize-money than

Canada, Brazil and Mexico. "What we are is actually one of the most consistent and well placed pathways for riders to access the larger paying events in the USA. "Riders are now competing on our tour and qualifying for the lucrative 'Unleash the Beast Tour', without even having to compete overseas. "In addition to this our tour not only offers pathways into the lucrative PBR events, but also to the WCRA (World Champions Rodeo Alliance) major rodeos that offer between $500,000 and a million dollars in prize-money. "Jason Mara is a fine example - he qualified for the WCRA $500,000 Semi Finals in Oklahoma in November and has now progressed to the Million Dollar Finals in January. "Our aim is to always focus on increasing prize-money whether it be via sponsorship, bums on seats, or the other business we conduct. "In today's day and age no sport can just rely on sponsorship and bums on seats to remain financial and achieve growth. "Yet whilst we focus on increasing the prize-money here we at the same time are creating pathways for our riders to progress into other international major events." ●

The Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA), based in Warwick, has gone through some major changes in recent times. A number of former directors resigned at the AGM in October and office manager Karen Burraston has left the organisation, with other staff stepping up to take over those duties. Veteran cowboy Shane Iker took up the position of president and Leon Meyer was appointed APRA executive director. The APRA Executive Board Report published in the December edition of APRA's 'Rodeo News' magazine - refers to the writing off of loans to the Rodeo Heritage Centre and NFR Management (Gold Coast) of $344,713 and $37,500 respectively. The report states the Rodeo Heritage Centre on Alice Street "has been a failure and is not financially viable", with APRA negotiating with the Southern Downs Regional Council which owns the centre to reduce APRA's leased space in the building. The report states that "prudent financial measures" need to be taken to ensure APRA remains sustainable long-term.

QUESTIONS ASKED OVER WARWICK RSL BY JEREMY SOLLARS Speculation over the future of the Warwick RSL Memorial Club continues, with management committee president Geraldine O'Neill last week telling local media the club's future is looking positive. In April of this year following the club's AGM the Free Times quoted Mrs O'Neill as assuring the community that the club was not on the verge of liquidation, but conceded it was experiencing "financial difficulty".

At the time Mrs O'Neill called on the community to get behind and support the RSL and she repeated that call last week. But this week she declined to comment to the Free Times on a report from March 2018 compiled by independent business consultants commissioned by the RSL to come up with recommendations to improve the club's financial sustainability. The Free Times has sighted a copy of the report by Brisbane-based Kestrel Solutions which contained more than 70 individual recommendations on areas

report that the Warwick RSL "has good potential to be able to trade properly" and has "the basic ingredients for what should be a successful Club". In answer to the question, "Can the Club be turned around?", the report stated, "Yes is the answer to that question", but dependant on the Committee and Senior Management taking on board our comments in this report". "The Committee and Senior Management need to action change successfully, to enable the business to be turned around and returned to profitability", the consultants said. Key points raised by the consultants in March 2018 included · A need for the development of a 'turnaround plan' by the management committee and club management · Forward cashflow projections were not provided to the consultants · Problems with purchasing and stock control and wastage · A staff culture bordering on "toxic" · The $1.5 million refurbishment of Kings Theatre and lack of revenue from the venue being a "drain" on the club's performance · 800 members on the books but only 350 "active" · Limited car parking · Paying off an Australian Taxation Office (ATO) debt of $117,000 at $5000 per week at 14 per cent interest ●

These included financial management and management structure - including the former management committee - along with the club's overall premises, bars, gaming, bistro, catering, administration and book-keeping. The Kestrel report states that as at the time of its release in March of this year the Warwick RSL was "not insolvent", but warned this could eventuate were Kestrel's recommendations not implemented. The company also offered to provide further expert assistance to the RSL management committee for a period of "18 to 24 months", to aid in progressing what it said were vital changes needing to be made to the operation and culture of the RSL. The Free Times this week asked Mrs O'Neill to comment on progress made with adopting the changes suggested by Kestrel Solutions but she declined to do so. She also declined to comment on the potential engagement of Kestrel Solutions for a longer period as per their suggestion. Former manager John Gartside has left the Warwick RSL and is understood to have resigned in the last several weeks. It is understood Kestrel Solutions was engaged to prepare their report on the Warwick RSL at the direction of the State Government's Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR). NEW DIRECTOR

WATER PLAN VOTE Southern Downs councillors were due to vote at their December meeting yesterday, Wednesday 12 December, on an application by the owners of Cherrabah Resort at Elbow Valley east

of Warwick to extract underground water to be bottled on the Gold Coast for human consumption. Council planning officers recommended the application be refused as Cherrabah's owners, Brisbane-based Wenxing and Wenwei Ma, had failed to show sufficient evidence about the short and long term impacts the operation would have on groundwater in the region. The third of three new departmental directors will start work at the Southern Downs Regional Council in early 2019, a spokesman said this week. The new Director of Corporate and Community Services has not been named but the council spokesman confirmed the vacancy had been filled. The new director will join Jane Stroud, Director of Sustainable Development and Graham O'Byrne, Director of Infrastructure Services. Ms Stroud and Mr O'Byrne commenced in their roles in November. The three positions were created as part of an apparent major restructure of the council's senior management earlier this year, following the departure of former directors Peter See and Ken Harris.

NO PLANS FOR SITE In case readers have been wondering about the vacant site next to the new Warwick Bunnings Warehouse on Condamine Street (between Bunnings and KFC/BP) Bunnings has confirmed they own the land. Bunnings General Manager Property Andrew Marks told the Free Times the hardware giant has "no immediate plans" for the site, after we asked if it was intended to be used for future car parking.

your Christmas waste," Cr Petty said. "Provide rechargeable batteries and a recharger pack with any battery operated gifts - it will save money and ensure that less batteries are used. "Batteries, CD's, DVD and printer cartridges can be recycled via a Resource Recovery satchel available from Council. "Avoid wasting food by planning ahead and serving smaller portions. "Eat the leftovers with another feast on Boxing Day and compost your food scraps through your compost bin or worm farm. "Remember to recycle your paper Christmas wrapping, cards, cardboard boxes, bottles, cans, tins, milk containers, juice and custard cartons, foil trays and foil wrappers. "And please remember - do not put your general recycling in a plastic bag. "Recyclables such as hard plastics, glass, cardboard, paper etc. should be kept loose in your recycling bin. "Soft plastics, such as cling wrap and plastic bags should be placed in a plastic bag and tied off before putting it in the recycle bin. "Polystyrene, such as foam cups and packaging should also be placed in a plastic bag and tied off before putting it in the recycle bin. "Christmas is a time for celebration, family and giving. BRIDGE FORUMS Community meetings have been held regarding the imposition of load limits

on a number of timber bridges across Tenterfield Shire. The first of these meetings at Tenterfield RSL Pavilion was on Tuesday 4 December and saw around 60 interested parties attending. A further meeting at was held at Torrington on Friday 7 December 2018 and was attended by 45 people. Two further meetings, at Urbenville last Monday and Liston last night, Wednesday 12 December, were expected to draw good numbers. Livestock and produce carriers, along with growers of vegetables and producers of beef cattle and sheep have been amongst those most affected by the imposed load limits and have made up the majority of attendees, along with their family members, a council statement said. Council's Chief Operations Officer Andre Kompler presented to the meetings, providing overview details on the scope of the issue, a bridge condition snapshot, remedy timelines and strategies, what Council is doing, funding status and the current timber bridge upgrade program. Mr Kompler advised the meetings that a round of level two and level three bridge inspections and the sudden total failure of a bridge in the north of the Shire highlighted that Council needed to take immediate action and impose load limits or speed restrictions on 16 bridges across the Shire to ensure their longevity and avoid any catastrophic failure. ● 12400070-RA39-18

A court ruling on the validity of the Federal Government's controversial 'Backpacker Tax' is expected to be handed down in February 2019. The tax was tested last week in a Federal Court action brought by Taxback. com, an international tax accounting firm that provides global tax refund and tax return services. Taxback.com said it took the action "on behalf of working holidaymakers from eight countries", arguing that the tax contravenes non-discrimination clauses built into tax treaties that Australia has signed with the UK, the US, Germany, Finland, Chile, Japan, Norway and Turkey. "These clauses prohibit unequal tax treatment of citizens from these countries, including working holidaymakers, compared with

marketing and publicity officer Penny Campbell-Wilson. "Both male or female students are welcome to apply who would be experiencing financial difficulties," Penny said. "The bursaries will be administered by the QCWA Border Division Executive." Applicants must submit · Written proof of achievement · Demonstrate the need for financial support · Details of continuing course · Three (3) character references · Short (500 words) resume of applicant's achievements and future aspirations The QCWA reserves the right to limit the period over which a bursary is granted to any one student. Applications are available from the QCWA Condamine Valley/Warwick Branch at 76 Grafton Street, Warwick (next to Crisps Coach terminal) or telephone 4661 2966 or 0408 767 558. Applications close on 19 January 2019. ANGER OVER AG COLLEGE CLOSURES BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Queensland rural sector has reacted with anger to a Palaszczuk Government decision to close Queensland's Agricultural Training Colleges at Longreach and Emerald. State Agriculture Minister Mark Furner announced last week the Colleges would cease operating at the end of 2019, citing low enrolments as the chief reason. But with typical political spin, the minister said the government was "investing more than $30 million to modernise and reinvigorate vocational education, training and skilling in the state's central west". "An independent review of current vocational education and training by Professor Peter Coaldrake found demand for traditional agricultural industry training has been declining for years and more flexible options are needed," Mr Furner said. "On the review's advice, the Queensland Agricultural Training Colleges will cease operating at the end of 2019, with a transition to more modern, cost-effective training." Mr Furner said private training providers would be able to fill the gap left by the Longreach and Emerald Colleges, but many in the rural sector are not convinced.

The minister said the decision to close QATC was "not taken lightly, but enrolments had been consistently falling for years despite significant government support". "Agricultural employers have been sourcing more flexible training options, and enrolments have fallen well beyond the point where the QATC was viable," Mr Furner said. "We have maintained the QATC Emerald and Longreach colleges with significant funding for years, but they are well past the point where they are sustainable. "Numbers of students have reached unsustainably low levels across Emerald and Longreach campuses of QATC leaving only nine students at Longreach and seven students at Emerald campuses to graduate in 2019. "In the Central West region alone there are five training providers operating within the region who offer agriculture training similar to that provided by QATC. "An additional 11 training providers offer training in a range of industry sectors from hospitality and construction to mining and aged care. "The agricultural sector and the jobs market in these regions have changed massively since the colleges were first

established, and the vast bulk of employers are choosing other options." Lobby groups including AgForce and even the Queensland Resources Council - which represents the mining industry - have insisted the government should review its decision.

FACILITIES, KNOWLEDGE ARE KEY Warwick cattlewoman Emma Thompson completed her studies in agriculture and agribusiness while living at the Emerald College for several years from 2011, before moving to business management studies at Melbourne's Swinburne University of Technology. Emma - principal of Warwick's Auzdown Droughtmaster Stud - says it's a transition which would not have been possible without the "foundations" laid by her experiences at Emerald, which had between 30 and 40 students during her time there. She left high school at the end of year 10 after securing a scholarship at Emerald. Emma this week described the government's decision as "disappointing", saying the private providers cited by Mr Furner may not have the same level of facilities as the 'ag colleges'. "The colleges have built the foundation for the agricultural industry, teaching

and inspiring youth to support one of our country's most important industries" she told the Free Times. "The facilities and the knowledgeable staff are just invaluable. "You have kids who come from the city and those who come from remote stations and they all have something different to offer and have different learning needs. "There is nowhere else you can learn the basics (of agriculture) in such a controlled and supportive environment - it's as good as being on a property. "It's very hands-on, which is what you need. "The live-in factor is a huge advantage - I don't think I would have completed my course without that and without the support of the staff and my peers. "There are so many past and current students from across the Darling Downs alone who built the foundations of their careers at Emerald and Longreach, where they not only gained their agricultural skills but business skills as well and have gone on to become leaders in rural industries. "You really have to question where else young people seeking a future in agriculture are going to get access to the same level of staff experience and support, and the same level of facilities." ●

RECYCLE OIL Queensland farmers are encouraged to take advantage of an opportunity to recycle their used oil after waste management company J.J. Richards & Sons added a new location for free oil collections. The company will now offer oil collections in the Charleville council area in addition to the Balonne, Goondiwindi, Western Downs, Southern Downs, South Burnett, Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley council areas. Queensland Farmers' Federation (QFF) President Stuart Armitage said the initiative had already collected over 30,000 litres of used oil from farms across the state. "This program assists farmers to manage a difficult waste stream generated from farming operations and reduce its on-farm hazard potential," Mr Armitage said. "Waste oils can pose environmental harm if not adequately stored or disposed of and during natural disasters including flood and fire can pose significant health and safety risks."

To arrange the free collection of used oil, contact J.J. Richards & Sons on 0458 123 450.

VEGETATION INQUIRY Minister for Agriculture and local Maranoa MP David Littleproud has announced a House of Representatives inquiry into the impact of vegetation and land management policies on the agricultural sector. Mr Littleproud said last week he first flagged an inquiry in August and has been pushing for one in the months since. "The fires in Queensland have now provided the catalyst to get the numbers to make the Inquiry a reality," he said. "Queensland Labor had the chance to look at this properly but they've squibbed it, so we'll do it. "We need to have a real look at the impact of the Queensland Labor Government's native vegetation management land management practices. "The idea a farmer is too scared to make a proper firebreak is a joke. We need an easy process so this can be done to protect us from fires. Departments need to be clear and quick when responding to landholders on this. "The absence of proper firebreaks on both public and private land is just dumb. "Has lack of cool burning on stateowned land contributed to fires? Has the Queensland Government done enough to make sure fires don't spread from National Parks onto farms? Have Queensland's vegetation management laws left more fuel load on farms?" The committee will be accepting submissions until Friday 25 January 2019. Enquiries to David Littleproud's Warwick office on 4661 2494.

RED MEAT TAX A GOOD OLD LAUGH The idea of taxing red meat by Oxford University shows just how irrelevant these institutions are becoming, Maranoa MP and Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud has said. Researchers in the US and UK last month suggested a tax on red meat, apparently because the World Health Organisation says eating huge amounts of red meat has the potential to cause cancer. "Comparing red meat to cigarettes is ridiculous - these institutions aren't living in the real world but instead make findings without a lead of reality," Mr Littleproud said last month. "Red meat is essential to a healthy diet. "This is yet another attempt from the PC crowd to tell Australians how they should live their lives. "You have to question who commissioned this report "Suggestions a red meat tax would result in less overweight people are garbage. "Government shouldn't dictate diet. "Government's role is to give people the relevant information and let them choose for themselves. "People have to take responsibility for

what they put in their mouths not the government. "I don't tell people what they should eat - people can make up their own minds and government should stay out of their lives. "If other countries want to follow this madness and tax meat good luck to them but it won't happen here."

IN BETTER NEWS ... A major Canadian study has found that eating cheese and meat daily slashes your chance of early death by a quarter. Researchers at McMaster University in Ontario last month suggested we can consume around twice as much as currently recommended, and it also includes butter. Leading doctors have said the findings challenge "conventional thinking" on healthy diet. Scientists quizzed more than 218,000 people about their food consumption across 52 countries. Those eating the highest levels of dairy and red meat saw their chances of early death fall by 25 per cent and a fatal heart attack cut by 22 per cent. Experts claim trying to warn people off butter and steak is counter-productive, as

A tax on red meat? Crazy just went to a whole new level... they end up scoffing white bread and sugar instead which is more harmful. Researcher Professor Salim Yusuf the study results show dairy products and meat "are beneficial for heart health and longevity", contrary to current dietary advice. Health guidelines say we should consume two serves of dairy a day and that dairy should make up eight per cent of an adult's daily calorie intake — essentially a pot of yoghurt or two slices of cheese. We're also advised to eat no more than 70g of red meat a day. But the new research, presented at the world's biggest gathering of cardiologists,

Why not try a sirloin roast for Christmas lunch? found those having three portions of dairy and 120g of unprocessed red meat fared best. Experts said eating white meat, such as chicken and turkey, had a similar benefit. ●

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF - AN AGENT Stock agents are an indispensable part of agriculture and their job isn't just about selling livestock - agents are more often than not the first point of contact for clients when it comes to advice on animal husbandry, and they work right alongside their clients in the heat and dust of their yards, branding, needling, tagging and drafting. If you've ever wondered what a typical working week in the world of an agent entails, TopX Warwick's George McVeigh breaks it down for you ... George's team includes fellow TopX agent Jim Ross, with his wife Lou McVeigh handling the 'book work' and administration side of the operation, a huge task in itself ...

MONDAY

buyers start showing up before the sale starts at 1pm. Wednesday night can be a bigger night on the phone with clients with the later start of the sheep sale.

THURSDAYS AND FRIDAYS

George McVeigh (left) with Morgan Harris and Jim Ross of TopX Warwick. (File image)

It all depends what's on and which clients you're servicing, but on a typical Monday we're shipping out cattle and lambs from properties, ahead of the weekly Warwick sales. Then we're normally at the saleyards from around 2pm and sorting and putting our numbers in for the Tuesday sale. Depending on the size of the cattle yarding we can be there as late as 8.30pm or 9pm.

TUESDAY It's a 5.30am start at the cattle yards and

after we've finished selling we're checking the sale off and communicating with clients and giving them their results - the good and the not-so-good. We can be on the phone up until 8.30pm that night making those calls and sending emails, again it depends on numbers in the sale. There's a lot of attention to detail and you need to make sure all the information you're providing is spot-on, no mistakes.

WEDNESDAY Normally it's a 7am start at the sheep yards - in winter you can't do a lot before the sun comes up. If we get big lines in from western clients - they can be up to 1000 - we're into those first, weighing and drafting. Those numbers can happen once a month or so. Then we have the local clients turning up. On a good day you've got everything penned and properly presented before the

We spend those days mostly calling on clients at their properties - we can go as far afield as Dalby and Wandoan. As well as cattle and sheep we also handle clearing sales. We don't do a lot of property sales - that's really something you need a specialist position for and it's hard when we spend so much time at the yards. What we do is very hands-on - on a Thursday and a Friday you'll find us helping clients with branding and cutting.

WEEKENDS Bloody oath we work weekends! We visit clients and we inspect and help draft cattle and lambs. As far as taking a break - we get three weeks break from selling over the Christmas period, but in saying that wholesalers still need stock through that period and if someone rings up with stock to move you have to place them. The most rewarding part of the job? Definitely it's getting a good sale result for your clients you feel pretty chuffed when that happens.●

WHY DO AGENTS TAKE DOWN DETAILS? AS consumers we are rightly very protective of our privacy, and of our personal details and so it can be confronting when you attend an open home inspection and the agent is taking your details before they let you into the property. However, it is important to understand why agents are collecting your details and what happens to that information and what your rights are around that process. What information do agents collect? Typically, the information includes your name and address, your phone number and your email address. Sometimes they may require additional information such as a driver's licence. Why agents collect information:

There are no secrets about why agents collect this information. Primarily it is a security measure. They are taking groups of people through someone's home and

it's important to know exactly who those people are. However, agents also collect the information as part of their ongoing research into the market. Your address and/or your postcode helps us understand where the bulk of our potential buyers come from - are they from nearby suburbs or have they come from further afield? This helps inform our marketing decisions and how to advise clients. Agents also collect your details in order to help you further on your purchasing journey. Real estate agents may take an opportunity to contact you to discuss what type of home you're looking to buy and to offer similar properties that they are selling. What you can do:

You are entitled to refuse to give your details to the real estate professional. However, please understand this may preclude you from entry to the property. You can ask how they will use this information and they may have a privacy statement for you to view. You're also entitled to ask the agent to not add you to the marketing list, or to only contact you regarding the property you're visiting that day. Ultimately, agents are protecting their clients by ensuring they know who is in the property. But they're also doing their research and offering their services to you as buyers, because that's what they do! Source - Real Estate Institute of Qld (REIQ) â—?

HEART SUPPORT WIN A DINNER FOR TWO...

The Stanthorpe Soldiers Memorial. (Story and photo contributed by Derek Jones).

MEMORIAL RESTORATION ALMOST COMPLETE The original Soldiers Memorial at the top of Lock Street at Stanthorpe has just been refurbished - restoring this iconic Memorial to a pristine state. It is awaiting the four Memorial Plaques, to be completed by early January, to fully complete the restoration. This Memorial is surrounded by a beautiful park, unique to the Granite Belt. Many say this is certainly the most prestigious Soldiers Memorial in all of Australia. It affords a lookout over the town and beyond, with many opportunities to shelter from inclement weather, if present. More importantly, it is a very restful and peaceable area - affording every opportunity to reflect and be grateful for the opportunities provided by others.

Courtesy of the Warwick RSL Memorial Club the Free Times has a Dinner for two to give away to a lucky reader. The Club is Warwick's premier meeting place for meals, gaming, functions and entertainment since 1978. Air conditioned and with disabled access, the Warwick RSL welcomes all to their licensed bistro and two bars. Try your luck at Keno or their 93 poker machines. THE SPIN

Souths' Matthew Hendry top scored in their game against Wanderers at CF White Oval. Here he defends a ball away on the off side early in his innings.

TEST IN THE PUREST CRICKET TRADITION The naysayers who declared Test Cricket as dead as the Dodo bird will just have to get back in their box and wait for another occasion to put down the purest form of the game of cricket following the Adelaide Test against India. Yes the Aussies got rolled but what an enthralling contest it was. Currently rated the number one Test side in the world, India finally prevailed in an edge of your seat finish deep into day five. King Kohli's finger nails were getting a work out as the Aussie tail wagged in the Indian's faces and Australian players, commentators and fans were willing a miracle. Alas not to be - 31 more runs proved a mountain too high. The much-maligned Australian side showed plenty of grit. That's not to say there is not still lots of work to do. There were too many occasions when we fell short with bat and ball but there is light at the end of the very long tunnel. It makes you wonder "what if" the game had been played at the Gabba as has been tradition for many years. Seems the ACA bowed to pressure from India to bypass the Gabba in favour of Adelaide. Shame the crowds did not follow their lead. If the ACA are concerned about crowd numbers at games then they should have stuck to their guns. I am sure the Gabba would have been bursting at the seams on days one and two as opposed to Adelaide which was less than half full. Would there have been a different result on the Gabba wicket? We will never know. The commentary provided by the newlyminted Fox Cricket broadcast team was knowledgeable, balanced, entertaining and not self-serving. Skull, aka Kerry O'Keefe quick with his clever quips and a laugh that is only outstripped by JT. As I listened to Warnie providing great insight into the game during stints in the commentary box it raised another "what if" for me. What if the ACA had bitten the bullet and given this bloke with such a great cricket brain and an understanding of the importance and value of Test Cricket the Australian captaincy back when the opportunity arose? Opportunity lost undoubtedly. This Test was played in the true spirit of cricket setting a fine example for youngsters following the game and everyone playing the sport. There was no sign of the questionable sportsmanship from either side that we have unfortunately become accustomed to and whatever chat / sledging that occurred during the game was nothing more than good-natured bantering. A welcome return to the way the game should be played. Bring on the rest of the series. Casey SHOOTING UP THE WORLD RANKINGS 16 year old Jake Stewart has climbed to freetimes.com.au

number four in the world archery rankings in his age group following his successful performance at the World Field Archery Championships in South Africa in October. Stewart competed in the Junior Male Bowhunter Unlimited. His score of 2632 placed him just 30 points outside the top three in an event in which 391 archers competed. The competition in South Africa did not come without challenges with the youngster forced to deal with altitude and extreme heat. Stewart believes his performance was a little below par in South Africa and the conditions may have played their part. A repeat of his normal score would have placed him well within the top three possibly even in second place. The next challenge for the young man who first took an interest in teh sport at eight years of age looks likely to be an upcoming competition in Greece. Stewart and his family are most grateful for the support they have been shown by the local community. TANNY BOWLERS ON THE ROAD The Tannymorel bowlers are certainly not letting the grass grow under their feet in spite of recently top dressing their green. Top dressing the green was a big effort made much easier by the team effort of the Tanny troops. While the green has been out Tanny troops have hit the road notching up wins all over the Southern Downs. Matty Tuck Gordon and Mick O'Leary recently won the annual Apple Blossom Four's at The Summit. Matty Gordie and TB headed to Clifton for the Clifton for their Triples event and came home with the Winner's trophy. Last weekend the Club had a very successful weekend in the Pennants competition winning Division Two. Well done to the team who got over the top of the Summit. Matty and Walshy also helped the Warwick Club to their win in Division Three. The launch of the Premier 7's competition was held at the Salisbury Bowls Club last Sunday. 28 Teams took to the green in the 4's event and it was Tanny Terrors who once again pilfered the winner's trophy. Congratulations to Sue Tuck Pete and Grumpy who answered the call and flew the flag at Salisbury. Seems they left the good folk down there far more educated on the whereabouts of Tannymorel (Tanny Who?) and also showed they can play bowls to boot. Well done Tanny Team Now you just need to keep up the good work. YOUNG PUP SHOWS OLD DOGS NEW TRICKS 72 years separated the oldest and youngest players in the play offs for the RSL Golf

Champ and Medallist. The youngest Matthew Burgess aged just 15 and at the other end of the scales Keith Alien - those mathematically inclined can do the maths. To be eligible to play in the final qualifiers had to have won a monthly medal during the preceding 12 months. After a year jockeying to get into the play-off, nobody really gave the eldest or the youngest much thought but it was the young pup that had the old dogs taking notice at the end of the round. Of course the elder statesman, Keith Allen did little to help his cause when he found two trees on the first hole of play. Throughout the play on the 18 blustery holes many rated themselves good chances with the bingo theory of eyes down and looking, slow back swing and full follow through - basics that most soon forgot. Eric McLellan fancied he was a chance to win the prize but when he totted up his score card found he had fallen one shot behind Keith Jones who was we are told got to work on his acceptance speech. That was bound for the bin the minute Ken Hinze finished his round with a score of 67 and supremely confident that he would take the booty. It was all a little premature as the entire field had to pay homage to the youngster in the field, Matthew His score was good enough to easily win the days competition. He went home with the RSL Bistro Voucher and the $100 prize for the coveted Champ of Champs trophy. Ken Hinze's 67 good enough to claim the runner's up spot - he also picked up one of the pin prizes. Other Pins were won by Keith Jones and Bob Watts. Keith Jones also won the putting competition. Mike McAuliffe who is hopeless in the wind won the final NAGA which is fitting as he has generously sponsored this award all year. The play off for the Ladies Medal of Medallists for 2018 was held on the same day and in a hotly contested event Kay Webb's score of 69 (a great score in the conditions) was good enough to add another trophy to her collection. The presentation of the Golfer of the Year followed at the RSL. David Burgess, father of Matt kept things the prizes in the family when he received the Tom Reeves Shield and a prize from the RSL Sub-Branch. Congratulations to the Burgess' and thanks you to the RSL Sub-Branch and the RSL Services Club for their sponsorship. Matthew's win highlights the misconception that RSL Golf is for old retirees or old diggers. The competition is far from that and is open to all l golfers. With only one junior in a field of 34 players, it begs the question - "where are they all?"

Perhaps as we settle in to school holidays it is time for a reminder that golf is available to juniors at $5 a game at any time except Saturdays and the club will even throw in free balls and a free pull buggy. CHANCE TO WIN JASON DAY GOLF BAG Time is running out for your chance to win a Jason Day insignia and signed Zurich Challenge golf bag. The bag was used by the former World No1 used in this year's PGA New Orleans event. Jason Day has kindly donated the golf bag which was totted around the course by his caddy and good mate, local golfer Luke Reardon to raise funds for the Stanthorpe Golf Club. Tickets are available from the Stanthorpe Golf Club and the winner will be announced on Saturday afternoon following Single Stroke competition sponsored by Luke Reardon. Bet there are plenty of golfers who would be happy to receive this Santa surprise. Incidentally, the Zurich Challenge Provided Cameron Smith with his first win on the PGA circuit which propelled him to no 28 in the world and also saw him defend his Australian PGA title at Royal Pines recently. CONDITIONS AS VARIED AS THE SPORT Conditions on the Croquet court have been as varied as the forms of mallet sports that are played in the district. Last week the Ricochet was played in cool and windy conditions but that was no deterrent to the players. Jenny Tunbridge and visiting player Deb took on Sharyn Roser and Liz Ellway. Ellway played very well making some great shots, particularly around the hoops. She and her partner scored a 23-17 win in the game. John Draper partnered Val Fancourt in a game against Peter Tunbridge and Bron Southgate. Val played some good shots as she and Draper went on to a 26-21 win. Bill Golding and Andrea Denkewitz faced off in a singles game. The normally consistent Golding looked to be a little off his usual game and Andrea scored a comfortable 26-20 win. Conditions were equally if not more difficult for the Gateball games on Friday. Two full teams of five played and one player was designated the refereeing duties. In the opening game Team Two (Andrea Denkewitz, John Draper, Pat Schnoor, Sharyn Roser and Grace Howard took the honours 18-8. In this game Pat Schnoor executed a 'gate and touch' (gained an extra shot) and an agari. Heather Widderick took on the referring duties. In the next game Andrea Denekwitz took over eh refereeing duties from Widderick. The tables were turned in this game with a win to Team One, (Val Fancourt, Joy Newman, Les Williams, Jenny Tunbridge and

Bill Golding). The final score 17-6. Joy Newman taking the playing honours with two agaris. Team Two bounced back in the next game recording a narrow 11-9 win as Jenny Tunbridge relieved Andrea of the refereeing duties. In the final game John Draper took over as referee and Team one balanced the ledger with a 19-11 win. ANGLAND RETURNS FROM HONG KONG For those of us who enjoy horse racing and having the occasional flutter the news earlier this week that injured jockey Tye Angland had arrived back in Sydney from Hong Kong to continue his treatment at the Royal North Shore Hospital was a stark reminder of the challenges and dangers riders face every time they are legged up for a race.. Two weeks ago, Angland who is widely regarded as one of the most talented Australian riders was speared into the turf at Sha Tin when his mount appeared to stumble out of the barriers. Since the fall, the nature of Angland's injuries have not been made public however in a statement the Hong Kong Jockey Club said Angland was cleared by doctors for travel and flown to Australia on Sunday evening accompanied by his wife Erin and an attending doctor Angland arrived in Sydney on Monday morning and was immediately transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital." Angland had been riding in brilliant form this season and with 19 winners is sixth on the Sydney jockeys premiership rankings. Last season Angland rode five Group 1 winners including the TJ Smith Stakes and Golden Rose on Trapeze Artist, and the Victoria Derby on Ace High. The thoughts of the racing community are with Angland and his family as undergoes further treatment. Angland's fall a stark reminder to us all of the dangers riders face each and every day. MAIDEN WIN FOR MCLELLAN The recent tough windy conditions continued to dog golfers as they hit the Stanthorpe course for the Men's and Ladies Stableford sponsored by the Stanthorpe Community Bank. Despite the challenging conditions some excellent scores were returned. Shaneen McLellan was a very popular winner of the Ladies event. She has only been playing for around twelve months and has been steadily improving with each game. McLellan returned score of 39 points to claim her maiden win relegating Club Secretary Neta Thouard (38 points) to runner up. . Paul Mills took out the Men's event with a great score of 43 points. Mill's was playing without his normal buggy partner Greenie. Maybe there's a message there for Paul. A count back was required to determine the runner up. President Stephen Kay (41 points) got the nod ahead of an unlucky Keith Allen. The pin shots were won by Mark Hendry (3 and 17), Stephen Kay (12). Neta Thouard won the ladies approach on the 17th. The pro pins were won by George Merritt, Stephen Kay and Matt Burgess. The ball rundown went to 40 points for the men and 37 points for the ladies. This weekend Luke Reardon is sponsoring a single Stableford event. A time sheet is available at the clubhouse. Golfers and others should have the annual Stanthorpe Boxing Day Classic noted in their diaries. The competition is a three person Ambrose with a 9.30am shotgun start. This is an iconic event on the 24 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

Kay Webb, pictured with her Ladies Medal of Medalist trophy, will be hoping she might be the lucky winner of the signed Jason Day Golf Bag Stanthorpe Golf Club is raffling. The bag donated by the former World No 1 will be drawn on Saturday afternoon following the Single Stableford competition. Stanthorpe Golfing calendar and every year a big field vies for some great pries as they work off some of the Christmas excesses. There is a time sheet on the board and places are filling fast so be sure and get your name down to avoid disappointment. COMFORTABLE WIN FOR WANDERERS Wanderers scored a comfortable win over South's in the round nine of the Stanthorpe Cricket fixtures and have moved to second on the premiership ladder. Playing on the CF White Oval Wanderers won the toss and elected to bat. An opening partnership of 45 from Ky Rashleigh (36) and Mitch Drayton (12) set a good platform before Drayton was caught by Tom Bonner off the bowling of Harry Williams. One again it was Jamie Carnell who was the lynch pin of the Wanderers innings. Carnell plundered the bowling attack. His 80 runs coming off 62 balls and included 10 boundaries. Weylin Aldridge added a quick 23 runs as the Wanderers tail wagged. Carnell was the last man out dismissed midway through the 35th over with the score 195. With several of the South's regular players unavailable John (Chook) Hendry dusted off the cricket gear and some of the Wanderers players found him difficult proposition to handle. He finished with four valuable wickets. Dan Davies was also amongst the wicket takers claiming three scalps. The target of 195 should ahve been gettable but the Wanderers bowling attack frustrated the batting line up. The opening partnership netted only 26 runs before Singh (18) was dismissed by Weylin Aldridge. Captain Ben Staley is normally dangerous with bat in hand but was tied down scoring just 18 runs from 52 balls faced before he was caught by Ryan Jones off the bowling of Andrew Einam. South's were 3/71 when Staley was dismissed but lost a clutch of quick wickets before Weylin Aldridge cleaned up the tail. Matthew Hendry was the best of the South's batsmen scoring 23 runs. South were all out in the 34th over more

than 70 runs shy of the required total. WIN FOR PRESIDENT It was a popular win for El Presidente Ray Thorn at Sporters last Sunday. The Pres nudged out David "Macca" McPaul the Runner-up who had to settle for the runner's up berth. The in-form Matt Waterworth returned the Best Gross of the round. Run-downs went to John Rawlings and Matt Burgess. Pin shots went to Paul Byrnes (12) and Mark Lynam (17). Lynam also collected the Pro Pin. Todd Beckett took home one of the Meat Trays on offer and Mark Lynam finished off a good day taking the other tray. A reminder that Sporters will be celebrating their Christmas Party on Sunday. There will be a BBQ breakfast with cooking commencing at 7.00am, followed by golf, a BBQ lunch. Sure to be another great day STRONG PERFORMANCE BY RSL After suffering a hammering at the hands of Valleys the previous week Tenterfield faced another tough task when they played RSL on Saturday on Sheehan Oval. Tenterfield batted first after winning the toss but lost any advantage when opener Ben Austin was dismissed for a duck in the first over with only three runs on the board. The experience of his opening partner Alan Donges showed as he steadied the innings. Donges and Daniel Potter (28) combined for a much needed partnership after the loss of early wickets. Donges was finally dismissed one run shy of a half century in the 19th over. The Tenterfield tailenders pushed the score along to 113 before Tenterfield were all out in the 29th over. RSL's Tom Garland proved a thorn in the side of the Tenterfield batsmen taking three wickets from an economical eight over spell which included two maidens. Josh Wren and Neil Perrit also did their bit with the ball. Both bowlers finished with a pair. 113 never looked to be enough to defend against RSL but Tenterfield made their opponents work for the points. Will Dowie and Duane Lihou set up the win with a solid opening partnership of 53 before Lihou was dismissed. Dowie followed a few balls later and the Tenterfield bowlers made in roads as wickets fell. RSL lost a further four wickets before passing the required total in the 26th over. Will Dowie topped the batting line up scoring 39 while Geoff Swan bowled well for Tenterfield taking three wickets. Tenterfield captain Shaun Merchant picked up the wickets of the opening pair Lihou and Dowie. This weekend is the final round of fixtures before the Christmas New Year break. Wanderers play Tenterfield; South's take on Valleys and RSL have the bye. RSL have now drawn six points clear on the leader board. Points table: RSL 24, Wanderers 18, South's 16, Valleys 12 and Tenterfield 2. MARYVALE BACK ON TRACK After suffering a surprise loss in their previous outing Maryvale Condamine quickly got things back on track last with a win over Wheatvale. It was a win however that has come at a cost with Dave Walker suffering a broken finger during the game in a failed caught and bowled attempt. The injury soured the Maryvale win and looks likely to sideline Walker for six weeks. It will also keep him out of this weekend's Davis Shield clash against Stanthorpe. Maryvale had earlier set Wheatvale a run chase of 233. It was a fine batting performance. Maryvale lost only four

CASEY O’CONNOR

wickets on the way to the total. Will Gordon top scored with 84 and Pat Bourke scored 56 adding another half century his tally this season. Best of the Wheatvale bowlers were Chris Cantwell (1/17) and Harrison Glasgow (1/27). Chasing the big total Wheatvale found it tough going against the Maryvale attack and were dismissed for just 149. Col O'Brien top scored with 63. Harrison Glasgow backed up a good performance with the ball scoring 21 runs as Wheatvale faltered in their chase. Kevin Bourke was the main destroyer taking five wickets for just 13 runs. Rohan Morris finished with 1/1 in what was a dominant return to winning form for the defending Premiers. REDBACKS FIND GOING TOUGH It was not the result Rosewool Redbacks were looking for last weekend in their game against Victoria Hill at Allora. The lack of a solid partnership was costly for the Redbacks who were all out for 182. Captain Tyhe Clarkson fell just three runs short of a century when he ran out of batting partners. The best of the rest were Morgan Gilchrist (19) and Daniel Bowles (14) as form deserted the Redback's batsmen. The Victoria Hill bowling attack dominated against the bat. Medium pace bowler Brodie Frizell took four wickets while Morris and Sandhu each picked up two wickets. Victoria Hill cruised to a nine wicket victory on the back of a good batting performance from Scott McLennan (not out 84). Brodie Frizell stamped his authority as an all rounder following up his performance with the ball to score63 runs. Redbacks' Tyhe Clarkson finished with 1/38 and Jake Peasnell 1/1 as Redbacks now look for ways to kick start their season when they face Maryvale Condamine in two weeks. LOW SCORES BUT ENTERTAINING Colts and Sovereign Animals went head to head in Saturday's Condamine Cup fixture at Slade Park on Saturday in what was an entertaining game but low scoring game. Colts set their opposition a moderate run chase of 166 after an up and down innings with teh bat. Sovereign Animals captain put down a catch at short fine leg but recovered to return the ball to the keeper and run out key Colt's batsman John Cleary for 47 when he was looking dangerous with the bat and the score 4/97. Colts batting line up crumbled to be all out for 166. Cleary 47 and Kevin Poole 46 contributing the bulk of the runs as the batsmen struggled against the Sovereign attack. Tony Munro finished with outstanding figures of 5/6 from a 3.3 over. In reply things began poorly for Sovereign when Poole took a diving catch to dismiss opener Mitch Hay. The Sovereign batsmen also found scoring on the Slade wicket difficult. Spinners Costello (3/24) and Kiernan (2/19) cleaned up half of the wickets between them. Cleary again proved his value as an all rounder taking 3/21 from his eight over spell. Sovereign were dismissed for 128 well short of the target. REP CRICKET THIS WEEKEND There will be no Condamine Cup fixture matches played in Warwick this weekend due the Davis and Mitchell Shield rep games on Sunday. In a Southern Down match up Warwick an arch rivals Stanthorpe will go head to head vying for the Bourke Hendry trophies. The games will be played on the CF White and Sheehan Ovals in Stanthorpe. â—? freetimes.com.au
