Police make brick arrest Dandenong Frontline Tactical Unit officers have arrested a second woman after a brick was allegedly thrown from a car in Narre Warren last month. It is alleged the brick was thrown from the stolen vehicle at another car while travelling along the Monash Freeway on 19 November. No one was injured during the incident, however the victim's vehicle sustained minor damage. Dandenong FTU officers attended an address in Scott Street, Dandenong yesterday morning (13 December) and arrested a woman after a short foot chase. The 26-year-old of no fixed place of address
has been charged with theft of motor vehicle, drive in a manner dangerous, drive while disqualified, careless driving, discharge missile, aggravated littering and unrelated offences. She has been remanded to reappear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 19 December. A 40-year-old woman of no fixed place of address previously presented herself to a police station on 12 December. She continues to assist police with their enquiries. The investigation is ongoing. Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.
No bus for Santa’s helper By Jessica Anstice Seven times John Alcock stood at the bus-stop in Narre Warren North waving at the driver to pick him up. Each time, the bus drove straight past him without slowing down. Mr Alcock, 67, uses the local bus line almost every day on bus route 841. "I need to get from Narre Warren North to Fountain Gate Shopping Centre daily at the moment as I am Santa for two large stores try to bring a light and joy in the lives of children and their parents," Mr Alcock said. Over the last six weeks, he has been left at the stop on Belgrave-Hallam Road seven times. "They cannot fail to see as I am standing on top of a hill in clear view from a huge distance," he said. "To make it worse I am on a walking stick and have already walked for half an hour to get there. "There is no seat or shelter. The problem seems to be that the intersection at Narre Warren North Road and Belgrave-Hallam Road has recently been reconstructed with lights etc including a new bus stop a while ago and some divers have not accepted the repositioning of the bus stop." Mr Alcock said the problem is further compound by management telling drivers they do not start their shifts until the next stop nearly which is an hour further for him to walk to. "I have been told by the drivers that some with not pick you up on the way even though they drive right past you," he said. "I know from working with the public for many years the one needs to use a great deal of common sense and even more compassion. "On several occasions, I have been left standing for over an hour in rain, cold and in extreme heat." Mr Alcock recognised that "99 percent of the bus drivers are excellent, caring and compassionate".

Narre Warren North resident and shopping centre Santa John Alcock has watched the bus drive past him while waiting at the stop on Belgrave-Hallam Road seven times in the past six weeks. "When the bus doesn't stop, it makes it very difficult for me. I am forced to wait at the stop for another 45 minutes for the next bus," he said. "I need to be on time because I have parents and children relying on me as Santa." Ventura Bus Line spokesperson said, "After speaking to our drivers we have realised that maybe the opening of the new bus-stop hasn't been advertised as it should have been and we are currently going down the path of telling every driver and putting up notices in the depots."

Carols bring Christmas cheer By Jessica Anstice The Berwick community gathered for a night of festive cheer at a Christmas carols event on Saturday night, 15 December. The Rotary Club of Berwick presented the annual Christmas carols event, with up to 4000 people enjoying the night of family fun. "It was a fantastic evening with many family groups attending," Rotary Club of Berwick member Isobel Caulfield said. "It seemed there were more people there than last year and luckily, the weather was very kind to us." Students from Berwick Lodge Primary School and Berwick College performed beautifully on the night, along with Bethany Fisher, Melbourne Youth Chorale, Lucinda Da Silva, Dhee and Casey Choir. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon was a guest speaker and of course Santa was a huge hit. Bethany Fisher had all the children dancing and wanting more from her and her dancers. The fireworks ended the evening and they were the perfect way to say goodbye. The hard work and inspiration from members of the Rotary Club of Berwick, the Casey Cardinia Rotaract Club, the Inner Wheel Club of Berwick and the Rotary Club of Narre Warren made it all possible. "The amount of voluntary hours put into the event is incalculable," Ms Caulfield said.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Sarah Jeffs, animal attendant at RSPCA's Pearcedale shelter
What is your role at the RSPCA shelter in Pearcedale and what does your daily routine look like? My title is Animal attendant and while I mostly look after the horses and livestock, occasionally I cross over into other areas like the cattery and kennels. No matter which area I'm working in, my main role is to ensure all the animals in my care are looked after. This includes the basics like feeding and cleaning up, all the through to medicating, rehab and working with the vets as necessary. Have you always had a passion for working with rescued horses? Yes, as it is for most horse lovers, once you connect with horses they are a lifelong addiction! So I've always been interested in work that would lead to rehabilitation and rehoming the horses that others have forgotten about. What is something people don't know about you? I used to collect 50c pieces, yes, apparently I was a bean counter from a young age! It helped me understand the value of money and now, working at the RSPCA, I'm reminded daily of how every little bit adds up. It's the generosity of so many that think this way that help us continue our work to end animal suffering and to find forever homes for the animals that come into our care. What is your most memorable moment? I have lots but probably marrying my husband last year and heading on our massive trip over to the UK. Memories I'll never forget. Where did you grow up as a child? Epping, northern suburbs. What is your favourite movie? Hands down, definitely, Space Jam. Nothing like a live action animated sports comedy with some alternate history thrown in to make you smile!

Blind students’ zoo trip The recent visit to the Melbourne Zoo by students of Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired (Berwick), gave a glimpse into the approach the centre takes with its students. 16-year-old Noah OBrien took on the responsibility of organising the zoo visit. Noah is vision impaired, but with the help of magnifying technology, he was able to access the zoo website, maps, and animal feeding times to plan the end-of-year trip to the zoo on Monday, 3 December. "The school encourages us to be independent, so I was happy to research the zoo,' Noah said.
"When we visited the animals and creatures, like butterflies, elephants, giraffes, penguins, limas and lizards, we feel, smell and hear what's going on and our teachers fill us in on the rest." Accompanying the Insight students to the zoo was teacher, Ilodi Jacobs who said the school's policy aims to "extend the students' learning through a range of experiences to provide a rounded education which prepares them for the transition to mainstream schools". "We teach the Victorian curriculum which covers the core subjects, as well the Extended Core Curriculum (ECC)," she said.
"The ECC is designed specifically for children with a vision loss." The ECC encompasses social interaction skills, compensatory skills, independent living skills, orientation and mobility, self-determination and advocacy, assistive technology skills, recreation and leisure, sensory efficiency skills, current education and transition skills. For Noah, who graduates from Insight this year, he's excited about the future, especially in pursuing his interest in sci fi movies. Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired, in Berwick, is Victoria's only specialist school for the blind

Happy second birthday to the Thompson Road rail crossing removal. Work commenced with the placement of barriers and 60 km/h signs along Thompson Road on 12 December 2016. Construction actually started in January 2017, after return from the annual Christmas holidays. Work was completed on the first three-lane bridge in June 2018, 17 months later. They are currently working on a second three-lane bridge, due to be completed in 2020! The idea is to improve traffic flow. Unfortunately, the population increase in Australia requires the equivalent of a new Canberra to be built every year. We take nearly four years to do one piece of roadworks which will require an upgrade upon completion. This is due to the growth in traffic due to population growth, which will have overtaken the improved road. Don't believe me? Have a look at the length of time it took to improve the Monash Freeway. It was under roadworks conditions for at least half of 11 yrs we have lived in the area. Stephen Trembath, Lyndhurst
We have lived in the same house two months short of 45 years, and if I can remember right there was a garden centre near Somerville Road, Hampton Park long before the shops got built. Back then Hallam Road was 60km/h and from Fordham Road it was just a dirt track. I wonder who is the silly person who wants the speed limit lifted to 80km/h? Hallam Road should stay at 60km/h, and hopefully Pound Road will get dropped down to 60km/h in the near future. D. Gardiner, Hampton Park
Glasscocks Road project needed To Anon, (Thumbs down, Berwick Star News, 13 December) the Glasscocks Road reservation has been set aside from the Western Port Highway, Lynbrook, all the way through to Clyde Road, Cranbourne North for at least the last 15 years! It is a must complete dual roadway to take the pressure off Thompsons Road. There are no other major east-west through roads except for Pound Road to the north and Sladen Street to the south. I’m sorry that you bought property in Glasscocks Road, but this project has been on the books for a long time and is a much-needed part of Casey’s progress forward, with our much-needed road improvement network. Cafe brings Narre class By Jessica Anstice The cosy cafe at Japara's St Judes residential aged care home in Narre Warren North was bustling with activity on Wednesday 12 December, as people gathered to celebrate a special partnership between Japara and Wallara. Wallara, a not-for-profit organisation supporting people living with a disability, is working with Japara St Judes to run a cafe at the home. The project allows Wallara to provide training and employment opportunities for their clients, and creates a lively hub and gathering place for Japara residents, families, staff, and the wider community. Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers Luke Donnellan, praised the partnership, say-
ing that the initiative would help build friendships and create a happier environment overall. "It excites me that we've got two wonderful organisations coming together, to stimulate people's lives, give people dignity, and bring the community into the home," he said. Daniel Gray is one of Wallara's clients who has been working in the cafe, alternating between the roles of taking customers' orders, serving, and making coffee. "I'm looking forward to learning new skills and maybe opening my own cafe one day, which I would call Cool Kitchen," he said. Sally Karnakowski said that she was enjoying learning customer service, handling money and how to make coffee.
Wallara participants.
Residents are also relishing the cafe, which is decorated with vintage kitchen memorabilia such as cake tins, tea canisters, cooking utensils and vintage advertisements. St Judes home manager Milly Kuranage said that the 'memory' theme added to the experience of the cafe. "One of our residents told me that the decor in our cafe took her back to a lovely place that she had visited as a nine-year-old child," she said. "Our residents and families have embraced the cafe, and I've received a number of compliments from families and residents alike." Wallara service delivery general manager Russell Harrison said the organisation is very grateful to Japara for providing them with the
space and equipment at no cost. "The program is great because it also benefits the residents of the home who enjoy coming for a coffee and a chat," he said. "Currently we have eight clients in the program, four clients each day. We hope the program will be ongoing and will expand to other sites." The cafe is currently open on Monday and Wednesday, from 9am to 3pm, with plans to increase opening hours in 2019. The cafe will also be taking a Christmas break, and shut from 24 December to 16 January. Japara St Judes aged care home is located at 381-403 Narre Warren North Road, Narre Warren North.

By Jessica Anstice The Life Skills for Community Living class from Narre Community Learning Centre visited Bunjil Place to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability on Thursday, 29 November. Students had the opportunity to go on a tour of the entire complex, which covered seeing the theatre, the recording studio, the art gallery, the library and the function rooms. The theatre was a new experience for two or three of the students and the computers and PlayStation were attractive features of the library. The visit ended with coffee and relaxation at Bunjil Place's cafe. "The students participated in the tour enthusiastically and said that they would visit Bunjil Place again," Narre Warren Learning Centre literacy co-ordinator Clea Nicol said. International Day of People with Disability is observed annually. This year's theme was about inclusiveness, equality and empowering people with disabilities.
Jess in the 800 seat theatre at Bunjil Place. Students in the Life Skills for Community Living class attend the program to improve their literacy, numeracy, employability and communication skills. "This tour was a wonderful chance to apply those skills in a real community context," Ms Nicol said. "Narre Community Learning Centre wishes to thank Bunjil Place for their partnership in celebrating this important day." For further information about the 2019 Life Skills for Community Living program, please contact Ms Nicol on 9704 7388.

The Rotary Club of Narre Warren has been building a relationship with Transit Narre Warren, which offers, food pickups, soup kitchen for those in need and other services of needed goods to those that are doing it tough. The club was keen to donate much needed items to Transit to assist families and those in need over the holiday period. Transit suggested that toiletries are something they don't always have enough of. A call was put out to their members (26) who as always responded to the need. They also contributed over $200 worth of toiletries to the cause. This meant the haul was very generous and the Rotary Club of Narre Warren hopes many people are assisted by the items. The toiletries were delivered on Thursday 13 December to Transit. The club is also in the early stages of helping with driving the food pick up van one morning a week for Transit. This means that much needed food is picked up and delivered back to Transit so meals can be prepared for those in need.

Mr Battin congratulated the current club president Bruce Lyons on such a successful club providing so many varied activities to promote friendship and fellowship to the retired people in the area.
PREPARE FOR GRASSFIRE The reasons are black and white
Rural grassfires can be just as dangerous as bushfires, threatening lives and property with little warning. If you are surrounded by paddocks, reduce your risk now by slashing grass, or turning bare earth to create fuel breaks. On high-risk fire days, leaving early, before a fire starts, is always the safest option.

Students donate to kids By Jessica Anstice It all began in 2017, in a Hampton Park Secondary College Year 8 Health and Alive class, where students found out they had the chance to create something that could be donated to the wider community to help those in need. At first, they students had no idea what to make for their project, but they knew they wanted to make something that would give other children joy. "We thought about our own childhood and what made us happy, so we decided to make a colouring book and activity book," student Hristina Travica said. "With that in mind we brainstormed what we wanted to base the books on. We ultimately
came to the decision of basing the books on the alphabet. "This meant that every child would be included as well as having something to help them learn or further their knowledge." The class worked together to design and create the books. Tigerprint published 200 copies of each book. "We are thankful for Tigerprint for making our colouring and activity books a reality, as well as our teacher Ms Naomi Dawson for being there for us every step of the way," student Taylor Stevens said. "From start to finish this whole project took us one year and on Wednesday 5 December we
finally went to the Royal Children's Hospital alongside Ms Dawson and George, where we donated the 400 books." This Christmas at the Royal Children's hospital, the books will be wrapped up and gifted to the children who are currently staying there, either awaiting surgery or recovering. The money to be able to produce the books was from a government initiative that puts money into Health and Alive projects to give back to the community along with a donation to raise the amount purchased from the school. The school adhered to the strict guidelines of the hospitals donation policy. Hristina Travica, Laura Buck and Taylor Stevens.
Happy first birthday comes back to Boomerang Bags Boomerang Bags volunteers were invited to celebrate all that they have achieved in their first year of Boomerang Bag making as well as a Christmas break up at Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House on Thursday 13 December. Boomerang Bags City of Casey started with their first sewing bee on 14 December last year in Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House, Berwick. There are now four Boomerang Bag groups operating in the city of Casey, meeting in Berwick, Coastal villages, Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills. The four groups combined have made over 2350 bags in the last 12 months which is an outstanding achievement, diverting a large amount of waste from landfill. These groups operate under the support of the City of Casey and the individual community centres. Each Boomerang Bag is made from donat-
Boomerang Bags coordinator Kelly Johnson cut the cake. 188291 ed fabrics that are upcycled by volunteers, at sewing bees or in their home. Each bag is unique and made with love to reduce our need for plastic. If you haven't got a Boomerang Bag yet come along to any of the Boomerang Bag sew-
ing bees to see how they are made and meet the friendly makers. You can grab a bag already made or join in to make your own. Anyone can assist in bag making, you do not need to know how to sew. There are many steps in the process including cutting, ironing, screen printing and making cups of tea. It is also the perfect place to have a go and learn how to sew in a fun and friendly environment. If you are interested in joining the groups or to donate materials, the groups meeting times, places and contact details are listed below. But Casey Dental Group is committed to providing the highest standard of dental care at affordable prices. The trusted group is one of the longest established dental practices in the City of Casey operating from state-of-the-art premise, offering families complete dental care under one roof. Casey Dental Service offers orthodontics for as little as $5,700, with interest free payment plans. It is best that children undergo regular checkups from an early age. Berwick’s Lisa Cameron will be sure to sparkle this Christmas as she takes home her spectacular Artelia sapphire and diamond ring. The ring was gifted to Lisa by Artelia jewellery house owners Maria and Roberto Ulas after she won the Star News Group and Artelia Christmas competition. The exquisite ring features a one-carat Australian blue sapphire centre stone, 18-carat white gold and round VS/F diamonds. Its recommended retail price (RRP) is $6,500. “It’s pretty exciting,” Lisa said. “I’ve never really won anything before nothing like this - it’s a little bit unbelievable.” Lisa entered the competition after seeing it advertised within the paper, though admits she didn’t think she had a chance of winning. And while she plans on showing it off this Christmas, she hopes it will one day be worn by her future grandchildren. “I’m definitely going to keep it for myself,” Lisa said “I have my first grandchild on the way so if it’s a little girl ill pass it onto her down the track and keep it in the family. We’ve not got an heirloom, so this could be the start.”

Summer edition OUT NOW
From left, Star News Group Competition winner Marianne Macumber with John Moorhead, Mick Ganna, Brayden Smith of Lindens Country Meats and PC3 Pastor Richard Schoenmaker. 188547 Picture: GARY SISSONS
Narre Warren South’s Marianne Macumber has embraced the gift of giving this Christmas. Marianne was the lucky winner of Lindens Country Meats Berwick and Star News Group’s Christmas competition which saw her awarded a turkey to help celebrate the festive season. Advertised in both the Pakenham Gazette and the Berwick News, the competition was drawn on 13 December and attracted over 200 entries. However, when Marianne was informed that she had won, while she was very grateful, she thought that there may be someone out there who would be even more thankful for the turkey this Christmas.
The Pakenham Christian Community Church (PC3) gratefully received Marianne’s turkey to include as part of their annual Christmas celebration on Monday 17 December. Throughout this celebration, PC3 holds a two-course meal for residents throughout Cardinia Shire. Anyone is welcome to attend the dinner. PC3 Pastor Richard Schoenmaker was exceptionally thankful for Marianne’s generous gift and said it will help feed the 120 people expected at the dinner. PC3 is located at 38 James Street in Pakenham. To find out more, visit www.pc3.org.au or find them on Facebook.

It’s hippy new year! It will be a hippy new year for orthopaedic patients in Melbourne’s south-east. Orthopaedic care is expanding in Berwick with St John of God Berwick Hospital set to open a brand new unit specialising in treating injuries and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system. A first for the hospital, the new orthopaedic unit will open in February and is currently recruiting compassionate caregivers to join its growing team. The fourth-floor ward has been left empty since the opening of the new hospital in January 2018 to accommodate future growth. It was not anticipated to be needed for the first few years of operation; however, local demand has seen it necessary to offer further orthopaedic services to the residents of Melbourne’s southeast. The ward has the capacity for 28 beds and will primarily focus on orthopaedic and neurosurgical patients. The new unit sees the beginning of an emphasis on orthopaedic services. The hospital’s MAKO robot, currently used for partial knee replacements, will be utilised for full knee replacements in 2019. “It is reassuring for local patients to know that not only do they have access to this technology so close to home, but they can access rehabilitation under the same roof,” a St John

Early diagnosis is the key
Most Australians will try to avoid a hospital emergency department over the Christmas and New Year's break if they can - particularly for minor accidents or injuries or if their child is unwell. So what do they do if their child needs to see a doctor and their regular GP is closed? Our Medical Home Cranbourne is open until 10pm every day of the year, including Christmas Day and New Year's Day. No appointment is required to see one of their bulk billing GPs. Patients can walk in to see the next available or their preferred doctor. Our Medical Home has no out-of-pocket cost for Medicare cardholders. Dr Karen Lake has also recently joined the Our Medical Home Cranbourne team. Dr Lake has been practising in the Narre Warren area for just over ten years and has now made the move to this modern medical centre. Dr Lake is a highly experienced GP with expertise in women's health, paediatrics, management of first-trimester pregnancy, vaccines and mental health. Dr Lake's experience in travel vaccines and medicines makes her a great choice for families preparing to travel over the holidays. In addition to 11 bulk billing GPs, Our Medical Home Cranbourne has a pharmacy, pathology, x-ray and dental all on site. The new on-site pharmacy can fill prescriptions as well as supply products that help with chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma and heart health. The pharmacy is open until 10pm every day.

The practice also aims efficiently detect conditions such as vocal cord dysfunction, lung diseases, inflammation, unexplained coughs, bronchitis, rhinitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). "To carry out appropriate tests and diagnosis these diseases quickly and be on the correct treatment plan, it is as easy as seeing a GP. In this Medical Centre, we have a respiratory physician and lung function testing lab." The lung function test is carried out by LT Respiratory Services. LT Respiratory Services is an independent service provider and their aim is to provide quality and reliable breathing tests performed to ATS/ERS standards. LT Respiratory Services is located within Better Health Family Clinic and is easily accessible by patients. "The tests offered include spirometry, which is one of the simplest measures of lung capacity and air moving in and out of the lungs. It identifies whether the cause of lung issues is related to obstructive or restrictive conditions," Mr Rashid said. "LT Respiratory Services also provides a bronchial provocation test. This test is performed when the baseline lung function test is normal, however, asthma is still suspected. It is also a mandatory test when joining armed forces or police if previously diagnosed with childhood asthma. "All tests are reported on by Respiratory and Sleep Physician Dr A.K.M. Nizam Uddin MBBS, FRACP. His special interests include difficult to treat asthma, COPD, vocal cord dysfunction, lung cancer and complex sleep-related breathing disorders. Marie has been practice Nurse at Dandenong Dermatology Centre since 2001 and over that time has regularly studied, upgraded and updated her nursing and laser skills. Most recently she has achieved her Graduate Diploma of Cosmetic Nursing whilst continuing as our caring Practice Nurse and trusted Laser practitioner. WHAT’S NEW? Anti wrinkle injections: The role of anti wrinkle injections is to relax wrinkle causing muscles, thereby softening and preventing the development of expression lines, creating a smooth and rejuvenated appearance. Wrinkles often appear around the forehead and eyes when we smile or frown and these areas can be treated along with crow’s feet, using a well studied safe medication that suits all skin types, administered only by our qualified medical professional. Skin Needling: Skin needling is a skin rejuvenation treatment that helps stimulate collagen and elastin to promote smoother, healthier skin through a natural healing process. This treatment is suitable for all skin types and is designed to support skin regeneration to help conditions including acne scars, surgical scars/scarring, stretch marks, fine lines, pigmentation, enlarged pores, blackheads and mild textural irregularities and is suitable for treatment during the summer months. Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light: Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light is used to treat conditions related to skin damage and premature aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, redness, acne scars, broken capillaries, pigmentation, melasma, age spots and general photo rejuvenation. Non ablative skin rejuvenation uses radio frequencies to improve the appearance of wrinkles, brown spots and minor scars by creating heat in the skin with out injuring the surface of the skin. The heat generated promotes collagen production which results in tighter, healthier, younger Iooking skin. Treatments are suitable to most skin types. Lions, Demons claim wins By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION PREMIER - ROUND 7 (DAY TWO) Kooweerup and Pakenham both converted on strong starts to their respective Round 7 WGCA Premier clashes with key victories on day two on Saturday, despite Mother Nature's best efforts. After amassing 8/300 from their 80 overs on day one, the Lions started in imposing fashion with the ball on Saturday, snaring a string of early wickets. Liam Bennett (1), skipper Kiefer Peries (9), and the super-experienced John Simpson (2) all fell cheaply. Around two hours of play was lost on Saturday as the wet weather set in, and it seemed play was destined not to resume. But some hard work, and a lucky break with the weather, saw play resume. There did seem, however, to be some confusion around the prospect of a result but if the Lions could bowl approximately 68 overs in three hours and 15 minutes, they could win without necessarily taking all 10 Cougars wickets. Subsequently, the final 30 minutes of play was particularly intense with the Lions pushing to take the final two Clyde wickets while also pushing through the overs. Ultimately, the Cougars were rolled for 159 in the 80th over with Jason Hameeteman (66) leading the way. Chris Smith (2/16) bowled 13 overs, while Dale Tormey (3/28) continued his brilliant all-around season for the Lions. Meanwhile, in a clash that was also heavily impacted by rain, the Demons defeated the Panthers by three wickets at Glover Reserve. Resuming on 1/69 to start day two (chasing 172), the visitors were perfectly poised until Lucas Carroll intervened with career-best figures of 6/58.
Devon Meadows' Lucas Carroll claims a sharp caught and bowled to dismiss Kooweerup's Jess Mathers.

The Demons eventually reached 7/174 in the 62nd over with star captain-coach Mark Cooper (92 not out) playing a key role. Elsewhere, Cardinia recorded a crushing outright win over Upper Beaconsfield despite only scoring 109 in its first innings. After Josh Browne (6/25) ripped through the Maroons in their first dig, he picked up another four in the second to finish with figures of 10/67 for the match. The Maroons were rolled for just 60 the second time around, with James Giertz also claiming 4/14. The Bulls then closed out the match at 0/15 from just two second innings overs. The Seagulls (211) and Cobras (2/48) played out a rain-soaked draw at Tooradin. DISTRICT - ROUND 7 (DAY TWO) Chasing 160 for the win, Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll lost its final eight wickets for just 32 runs
ficer. Brayden Browne (4/30) and Mitch Tharle (4/43) were sublime for the Seagulls as they dismissed the Bullants for 143. Ash Smith (49) led the way for Officer. SUB-DISTRICT - ROUND 7 (DAY TWO) Lang Lang defeated Merinda Park. Ricky Caddell (6/44) was in devastating form and was well-supported by Jess Grima (3/36). The Tigers' total of 225 was enough as the Cobras were dismissed for 121. Pakenham claimed a win over Nyora, posting a total of 8/292 in 76 overs in reply to the Maroons' 8/280. Jacobus Hynes (63) and Dene North (58) top-scored for the Lions to lead them home. Catani and Kooweerup shared the points, while Pakenham Upper/Toomuc claimed the win on forfeit over Gembrook.
against Cranbourne Meadows. Opener Michael Giles (44) top-scored for the Marygoons, but his side was dismissed for just 85 runs. Clyde was looking for an outright win over Carlisle Park, leading by 98 runs after the first innings, but the Viking batsmen stood strong on a short day two. At 1/58 in Carlisle Park's second innings, Clyde claimed the win. Cardinia and Emerald pumped out plenty of runs, but the Bulls' massive total of 9/351 was enough to see them claim the win. Bomber Mark Alenson's unbeaten 148 came off just 173 balls and included 10 fours and 5 sixes. Unfortunately for the Bombers, it wasn't enough as they totalled 7/305. Dwayne Doig (4/97) claimed crucial wickets for the Bulls. Tooradin claimed its maiden win of the season, defending their total of 189 against Of-
Bloods stun at Arch Brown By Nick Creely

A stunning Springvale South performance has seen Berwick knocked out of the top four at Arch Brown Reserve on Saturday. In the DDCA Turf 1 blockbuster, the Bears' inconsistent season continued, but after winning the toss and batting on their home deck, nobody could have imagined what the Bloods would do over the course of the next 90 minutes. The Bloods snared in-form openers Nathan Pilon and Jordan Cleland early, and from there, lost massive clumps of wickets at the wrong time to be skittled for a measly 50 in 23.4 overs. Recovering from a minor injury to his ribs, DDCA legend Steven Spoljaric finally snared his first wickets of the season, taking the incredible figures of 3/4 off eight overs, including the wickets of gun players Pilon, skipper Matt Chasemore and Matt Robertson cheaply. Leggie Malinga Bandara did what all good spinners do, picking apart the tail to finish with 4/6 off his 3.4 overs. Quick Matt Wetering (2/14) also bowled well. Heinz Southern Districts also picked up a huge win, climbing off the bottom of the table and defeating ladder leaders Buckley Ridges at Park Oval. Off the back of yet another stunning hundred to Kaushalya Weeraratne (104), the Cobras racked up 6/240 off their 40 overs, with skipper Trevor Davies (43) also in the runs on a wicket conducive to batting.
The Bucks were bowled out for 214 with Rajitha Jayathunga (68) giving it his all, but a wonderful hat-trick to Ashan Bandaranayake (5/32) was the difference in the high-scoring affair. And Hallam Kalora Park (5/180) held off St Mary's (6/170) at Carroll Reserve, with the loss now consigning the Saints to the bottom of the table. North Dandenong and Mordialloc drew after rain saw the game abandoned after just 20 minutes, but as a result, has seen the Maroons surge into the top-four. In Victorian Premier Cricket, Casey-South Melbourne handed Kingston Hawthorn its first win of the 2018/19 season, but luckily for the Swans, managed to hold onto their spot inside the top-eight. Defending their 171 from day one, the Hawks started the day on 2/74, and crossed the target five wickets down, before ending on 8/253 declared. The Swans had another hit, finishing the day on 4/140, with Ryan Quirk (53) and Michael Wallace (52 not out) striking half-centuries. And Melbourne (7/326) and Dandenong (6/164) drew at the Albert Ground, with the first session washed out due to the rain and wet outfield. The Swans take on Footscray at home for the final one-dayer before Christmas, while Dandenong hosts the lowly Frankston Peninsula.

Little athletes shine bright The 2018 Subway State Relay Championships were held at Albert Park's Lakeside Stadium recently. The event involved teams competing from right across Victoria, with the Cranbourne Little Athletics Centre fielding 12 teams on the day. There were a number of particularly impressive performances from Cranbourne, and in an outstanding effort the Under-9 mixed
4x100-metre team won gold in its event. Cranbourne Little Athletics Centre is incredibly proud of all its competing athletes, and is very excited about the Under-9s' gold medal-winning performance. The centre is also grateful to its coaching staff and team managers - Matt Warwick, Mark Sullivan, Paul Freestone and Mark Jouvelet, who supported the athletes in the lead-up to the championships, and on the day.

CRANBOURNE BOWLS An away win against Montmorency was always going to be a great challenge for the Cranbourne ladies team and at the lunch break, sitting six shots down, not everything was going to plan. Credit to the ladies though, their momentum picked up as they got a better understanding of the green and managed to win by nine shots. Not only was it a great day for the ladies Division 1 side, but all Cranbourne sides recorded a win in midweek bowls - an excellent result for the club. The fab four side of skip Isobel Partington, Cheryl Wright, Gwen Scott and Sandra Mueller had an outstanding day, winning by 11 shots, which made sure of overall nine-shot victory. Next week, the battle continues with an away game against Clayton which will decide which team takes the number one spot on the ladder going into the Christmas/New Year break. Cranbourne defeated Montmorency, 54-45, claiming 14 points. Midweek bowls results: Cranbourne 2 (Division 2 Open) defeated Pakenham, 63-46, claiming 14 points. Cranbourne 3 (Division 3 Open) defeated Berwick, 76-51, claiming 14 points. Cranbourne 4 (Six-a-side Open) defeated Keysborough, 57-16, claiming 14 points. NARRE WARREN After a long weekend of bowling, Narre Warren had a difficult day on Tuesday. Division 2 was at Hampton Park, and squandered a good early lead to lose by one shot overall. Geoff Ampt, Wilma Haringsma, Eric Sydenham and Brent Hone led all day to win 19-15. Keith Mark, Alan Mark, Rod Lane and Jim Millar also kept their noses in front and won 17-15. Wally Finlayson, Reg Young, Judy Naughton and Erik Luyters had a disappointing afternoon, losing 26-19. Narre Warren (1) 4-55 lost to Hampton Park (1) 2-56. Division 3 was at Fountain Gate and also had a loss. Jeanette Cox, Joe McGuire, Philip Howard and Arthur Scheurer won 20-16, but Pauline Kempf, Andy Tobler, Peter Hayden and Peter Groom (20-12) and Arthur Fitt, Janice Moran, Enid Gibb and Colin Groom (24-12) both lost. You car is your best friend on a big trip. RACV has plenty of ways to ensure it’s ready for the road. Just because you’ve packed the car with maps, luggage and your favourite music, it doesn’t mean you’re totally ready for the big road-trip. Have you checked the condition of the car? Take good care of it with some basic but essential maintenance before you leave your driveway for your open-road odyssey. Get a grip Are your tyres in good shape? The tread on the tyres is designed to clear water from the contact area with the road and a minimum groove depth of 1.5mm is vital. If it’s any less, or if you find bald patches (rendering the tyre unroadworthy) or uneven wear, you must replace them. Before you leave, check your tyre pressures when they are cold. Minimum pressures are usually found on a placard on the driver’s door jamb or the glovebox lid. And don’t forget you have five tyres, not four – give the spare the same attention. And

if your spare is a space-saver, be aware of its speed and distance restrictions. Light it up Headlights are ineffectual if they have blown globes, aren’t aligned properly or even if the outer shield is dirty or covered in bugs. Check all lights are working, and ask for the headlight aim to be checked when you have the car serviced. Braking point Just because your car was serviced recently doesn’t mean your brakes are in good shape – not all services include a brake check. If you’ve noticed even the slightest deterioration in braking performance or anything unusual (be it an unusual sound or an unusual sensation as you engage the brakes), get them checked by an expert immediately. Batteries are included The average car battery only lasts around 3½ years – and possibly less if you usually take short trips in stop/start traffic. If your battery is ‘getting on’ or if you’ve had difficulty starting the car, get your battery checked by expert technicians before you set off. RACV Batteries’ mobile specialists will check your battery’s health. And if it needs replacing, then they can ensure that you get the right type of battery for your car on the spot. Your window to the world Don’t just give your windscreen a quick wipe before you leave – thoroughly clean it inside and out. If you spot any chips or cracks, they’re just the beginning of a bigger problem, so get them seen to. Also ensure your wiper blades are properly fitted and in good condition. The rubber should be pliable, and the wipers should hug the windscreen closely as they wipe, leaving no streaks or untouched patches.
