May your smiles be merry and white! Merry Christmas from the team at Granite Belt Dental

MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk It has been a big year for the Southern Free Times and as it nears a close we'd like to thank all of our valued readers and advertisers for the strong support they've given our publication throughout 2018. Our commitment to bring our readers relevant and timely coverage of the hot topics driving debate and discussion in our region will continue in 2019 - look out for our first edition in the new year out on Thursday 17 January. The Southern Downs and Granite Belt communities have shown remarkable resilience this year, with drought conditions prevailing despite some reasonable areas of rainfall in spring and into summer. There is no doubt 2019 will throw more challenges at us as far as the weather is concerned, and the economic pressures that entails. For now, it's a matter of taking a bit of time off over the Christmas and New Year period - we all deserve a break and a chance to unwind and spend time with those closest to us. It has been a year of mixed fortunes for many but with Christmas just days away I'd like to take this opportunity to wish communities across our region a peaceful, joyful and safe festive season, from all of us here at the Southern Free Times. Catch you in 2019... ● Jeremy Sollars

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Southern Downs councillors at their December meeting last week voted unanimously in favour of cutting off the non-potable water supply to the village of Karara west of Warwick - at a cost to ratepayers of close to $100,000. The move was first flagged early in 2018 with the council adamant the water from Canal Creek is a health risk if used for drinking and cooking, despite residents being equally adamant they have only ever used it for washing clothes and vehicles, watering gardens and flushing toilets. Residents had suggested that the installation of a floating foot-valve in Canal Creek would improve the quality of the water, reducing the amount of silt and debris but their suggestion - and their protests - have been ignored.

The Karara Tavern and Motel. Councillors appeared to have dithered on making a final decision on Karara's water supply since holding a public meeting with residents in July. But at the December meeting held in Warwick last Wednesday 12 December the fate of the water supply was sealed, another kick in the guts for the small community which just weeks ago came close to being devastated by a bushfire. In exchange for the Canal Creek supply the council will offer each of the village's

residences a 5000 gallon rainwater tank, the installation of which the council will pay for. Councillors last week voted to approve an "operational budget allocation of $99,610 which will allow 11 property owners to engage a plumbing contractor to complete the installation of a 5000 gallon rainwater tank and organise the first fill of potable water for all tanks," the meeting minutes stated. "The Karara Tavern and Motel will be provided with an additional 3 x 5,000 gallon rainwater tanks." The council will receive and approve each quote prior to installation of the tanks and will pay the contractors directly. The council-owned water supply infrastructure from Canal Creek will then be donated to the Karara Rural Fire Service. No timeframe has yet been given for the process. ●

DE-MERGER CASE RELEASED TOMORROW BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Granite Belt Community Association (GBCA) will publicly release its full deamalgamation business case tomorrow, Friday 21 December. The business case - which outlines the financial and other arguments in favour of deamalgamation - was presented to Queensland Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe on Tuesday 11 December. The minister will now consider the matters raised in the business case and the State Government will then decide if the de-amalgamation of the Granite Belt from the Southern Downs Regional Council is viable. Mr Hinchliffe has previously said if this is the case the matter will be put to a referendum of all voters in the current SDRC area, including those of the former Warwick Shire. A summary of the GBCA business case states a new 'Granite Belt Regional Council' would be "financially sustainable, as will be the remaining Southern Downs Regional Council". The executive summary of the GBCA business case sets out the following key statements · The transition costs will be affordable for the new GBRC · The Granite Belt has unique characteristics in Queensland of climate and soil which have formed its unique and largely selfsufficient community · The Granite Belt has virtually no connection (save for 60 kilometres of highway)

Chung Hing

· The link of accountability of its local government has been lost to the Granite Belt community through its dilution into the Southern Downs

agriculturally, economically, socially or topographically with the Warwick area of the Southern Downs Little of the stated objectives of amalgamation has been achieved and, conversely, almost all of the predicted negative outcomes have happened Both areas would be better and more efficiently served by having their own local governments These unique circumstances do not provide any general precedent for other deamalgamations Because of the very different needs of the two communities, a one size fits all approach, intended to provide equity throughout the region, coupled with a disconnect of local knowledge, has produced major social and economic disadvantage to the Granite Belt This disconnect and resulting lack of equity cannot be resolved electorally, it is the structure which is the problem

Mayor Tracy Dobie last week seized on an erroneous comment made by GBCA president Rev Alan Colyer at a public forum on the business case in Stanthorpe on the night of Tuesday 11 December, to the effect that Stirling Hinchliffe had "embargoed" or delayed public release of the business case. Rev Colyer later apologised for his error and clarified for the media that what he had meant to say was that the GBCA had decided to give the minister "a couple of weeks" to digest the business case before the GBCA released it to the public. In a council media release last week Cr Dobie appeared to use Rev Colyer's mistaken remark to attack the GBCA over transparency, despite the group having stated all along the business case would be publicly released on Friday 21 December. The GBCA has been publicly appreciative of the cooperation the council has given the group in compiling its de-amalgamation case. · The full business case can be viewed from tomorrow on the GBCA website at www.granitebeltcommunity.com ●

EXTRACTION PLAN SHELVED BY JEREMY SOLLARS An application by the Brisbane-based owners of Cherrabah Resort east of Warwick to extract up to a million litres of underground water annually from the property has been withdrawn. Brothers Wenxing and Wenwei Ma had sought approval from the Southern Downs Regional Council for their plan to extract the water, which was to have been transported to the Gold Coast for botting for human consumption. But the minutes of the December council meeting held last Wednesday 12 December stated the Ma brothers' application had been withdrawn at their request. It's good news for neighbouring landowners in the Elbow Valley district around Cherrabah, who had lodged strong submissions against the proposal on the grounds it could have potentially devastated underground water supplies in the area. The council's planning department had recommended councillors refuse the application on those grounds if it came to a vote. The Ma brothers lodged the application in September through their entity Royal Duke Holdings, under which they own other property on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane. Their corporate entity which owns Cherrabah Resort is Joyful View Garden Real Estate Development Resort Co Pty Ltd.

re you recently retired, or otherwise have some spare time on your hands to offer as a volunteer - and skills in anything from boilermaking to administration and hospitality? The Southern Downs Steam Railway may well be the place for you. This local gem is located at the corner of Fitzroy and Hamilton Streets in Warwick and has been quietly kicking goals for the last two decades. The 100 per cent volunteer group lovingly restores old-time rail locomotives and carriages and is also a major player in our region's tourism industry, carrying some 4000 paying passengers a year across the Southern Downs and Granite Belt and beyond on its steam train trips.

Trevor Costin and Jim Beasley get hands-on in the workshop. But it's not all about the tools - the SDSR needs ''indoor'' volunteers too.

There's a strong social element down at the SDSR - why not drop in and say hello?

The interior of a newly-acquired centuryold carriage is awaiting some TLC.

Kelvin Hutchinson with one of two recently-acquired ''new'' steam locos, which will be fashioned into one and restored. They also play an important historical role - curating a large collection of railway museum items to preserve the rich past of rail in this region and across Australia. But with volunteer numbers down due to factors such as ill health and people leaving town, the Southern Downs Steam Railway (SDSR) is putting out the call for new blood - and they need you now. The Free Times caught up with SDSR secretary Kelvin Hutchinson and other stalwarts this week, just as they wrapped up the hard work they've all put in throughout 2018. Kelvin said now is the perfect time for anyone with spare time and skills to offer who might be looking for a new volunteering challenge in 2019 to give the SDSR their red-hot consideration. And it's not all about getting down and greasy in the workshops with the hi-vis on - there are plenty of indoor 'white collar' jobs which need doing, as well as a need for carriage attendants, for which full training is provided, also offering the chance to dress up in heritage rail outfits. "We have a really diverse range of volunteers and tasks, and we have roles for both men and women," Kelvin said. "Obviously anyone with skills in areas like boilermaking and diesel mechanics or a background in any form of engineering is going to be very valuable to us, but anyone with some DYI ability is welcome - a lot of our volunteers have been surprised at what they've learnt here and the new skills they've picked up. "People with timber and metal restoration knowledge will find plenty to do and we also need help with things like gardening and yard maintenance. "We have another group of volunteers who serve as carriage attendants on our

Saturday steam trips, and we also have a need for admin-type people - for example we need people to help with cataloguing our museum pieces and artefacts and historical documentation. "We're also looking for people with leadership ability from any background, succession planning and looking to the future is really important for us. "So there's a lot of variety and we can cater for people from a lot of different occupational and skill backgrounds. "And if you happen to suffer from insomnia we can use you down here at 3am on a Saturday to help fire up the loco when we're doing a trip. "But in all seriousness, you can come and go as you please - if you can't make it on a particular day don't stress, someone else will fill the gap. "There's also is a strong social side to it - we'll sit around and have morning smoko and lunch and a yarn. "There's a lot of camaraderie." Kelvin said the current core volunteer group comprises around half a dozen, along with a number of 'work for the dole' participants and folk doing their 15 hours of voluntary work as required by Centrelink, plus around a dozen others who do the carriage attendant gig. But in 2018 Kelvin said overall volunteer numbers have been "light on", and with a swag of exciting upcoming projects in 2019 and beyond more bodies are needed to keep the SDSR on track, so to speak. "Our numbers have certainly been diminishing this year - it's something we're really very concerned about," Kelvin said. "We have some pretty significant infrastructure here - we've spent millions over the years, with money from our own fundraising and from government and council grants.

The lovingly-restored C17 steam loco the ''Bob Keogh''. "We've just acquired two more steam locomotives which will be combined into one and a number of 100 year old carriages which will be fully restored - that's all going to be at least a two-year job. "We're also expanding our museum collection and we've acquired some adjoining land parcels where we'll be expanding our workshops and infrastructure over the next few years, including a museum precinct and community group spaces we'll be offering to other local groups at very reasonable rates."

GIVE IT A GO Southern Downs Steam Railway volunteers spend Wednesday and Thursday at their precinct next door to the Warwick Railway Station and over the railway tracks from Warwick's famous Pig and Calf Sale yards, with the entrance near the corner of Hamilton and Fitzroy Streets. The group also runs regular steam train trips as far as Wallangarra, Clifton, Hendon and Inglewood on Saturdays. Drop in and say g'day in the new year or for enquiries call Kelvin Hutchinson on 0407 733 836.

2019 TRIPS PLANNED The SDSR have put together their January to June 2019 steam train trip program. They are planning a number of

'short' trips in 2019 to Stanthorpe and back, aimed at families with young children. Longer trips - like Warwick to Wallangarra with lunch on the platform down there - are popular with railway enthusiasts, descendants of former rail workers and 'grey nomads' from across Queensland and Australia. · For details visit www. southerndownssteamrailway.com.au

ABOUT THE SDSR ... Southern Downs Steam Railway (SDSR) aims to provide a unique heritage railway experience on the Darling Downs and Granite belt through the operation of a tourist railway. The Southern Downs Steam Railway is based at the site of Warwick's former Locomotive Depot. It had a seven road part Roundhouse, supplying locomotive power to the Southern Line, South-Western Line, Maryvale, Killarney, Allora/Goomburra, Amiens and Texas branches, before closing in 1969. Now called the Warwick Railway Precinct, it is the home of operations of the SDSR's C17 locomotive and carriage fleet. The Peter Brixey museum, located on site, houses their museum pieces, historical documents and artefacts. It resides in what was the station building at Cottonvale. (Source - SDSR website).

The Killarney Area Promotions Association (KAPA) was successful in obtaining a grant through Landcare to provide some relief to farmers, businesses and the general community who have done it tough during the drought. KAPA came up with the idea of a Christmas Festival and Twilight Markets, to be held this Saturday 22 December at the Killarney Showgrounds. Gates open at 4pm and the event will finish at 9pm. The grant has enabled KAPA to give kids under 12 free hot dogs, free drinks, free ice cream, free lollies from Santa, free jumping castle and face painting. These are limited to one only, per child 12 years and under.

There will also be entertainment from Bruce Halter and the Killarney Choir and a barbecue by the Emu Vale Hall committee as well as various other food providers and coffee vendors. In the Twilight Markets can be found various, local crafts people selling everything from plants, jewellery, homemade cakes, children's clothes, beautiful Christmas summer fruit, bric a brac and lots more. There will be over 20 stalls. The Southern Downs Regional Council will be there to give out advice to those who may need help due to the drought. Enquiries to Bev Ruskey on 4664 7101. ●

DRUGS CHARGES

A JOYOUS CHRISTMAS AND A HEALTHY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR READERS, CLIENTS AND SUPPORTERS The Southern Free Times management and staf would like to thank everyone for their continued support of a local independent newspaper during 2018. We wish you fun times with family and friends

Police this week closed a drug operation which saw 15 people charged with over 55 offences in the Warwick and Stanthorpe areas. A statement released by Queensland Police Media on Monday, 17 December, said Operation Barracuda saw search warrants executed on 15 different addresses since last Friday. The statement said the operation was focused on the supply of dangerous drugs in the Warwick and Stanthorpe areas. The closure of the operation to date saw 17 people charged with 55 charges. The charges included · Nine charges of supply of dangerous drugs · Four counts of producing dangerous drugs · 14 counts of possession dangerous drugs · 15 counts of possession of utensils · One count of robbery with violence (attempted stealing of a vehicle that occurred in Warwick on December 15) · Two counts of evade police · Two counts of indecent dealing with a child and one count of possession of child exploitation material All are due to appear in the Stanthorpe and Warwick Magistrates Court in January next year. A separate and predominantly Stanthorpe-based operation this week resulted in a 21 year old Stanthorpe man being charged with three counts

of drug trafficking and 27 counts of supplying drugs to minors, along with rape and indecent dealing charges. He appeared in Warwick Magistrates Court on Monday of this week and was remanded in custody to appear again in January.

NEW MEMORIAL The memory of the March of the Dungarees will be forever kept alive with the Southern Downs Regional Council commencing work on a new memorial in Warwick's Leslie Park. Taddio Building Group is undertaking the works on the Dungaree Memorial, which is set to open in early 2019 at the corner of Palmerin and Fitzroy Streets near the Cenotaph. The March of the Dungarees departed Warwick for Brisbane in 1915 and during World War I was the only recruiting march to occur in Queensland. The march left Warwick with 28 men and by the time it reached Brisbane that number had grown to 125 men wanting to enlist. Signs at the corner of Fitzroy and Palmerin Streets will direct pedestrians around the temporary fencing, and residents may still enter Leslie Park. ●

Staff and students at Freestone State School unveiled a special memorial to a very special teacher last Friday 14 December. Much-loved supply teacher Bob Baldwin - who passed away earlier this year - has been memorialised at the small country school with a bench depicting farming and rural scenes which were very dear to his heart. Since retiring from teaching full-time some years back Bob had been fulfilling the supply teacher role at Freestone and other schools in the wider Warwick area where he was a familiar and friendly face to all he came in contact with, even going on school camps and other out-of-school activities. Bob's wife Janice Baldwin - herself a fulltime teacher at Freestone State School - joined fellow staff and Prep to Year 6 students in an emotional unveiling of the bench, which will be a permanent reminder of a dedicated teacher who was loved and respected by those whom he taught of all ages. The bench was produced by Wills Projects and Designs in Warwick with funding from the Freestone State School P&C. Freestone State School will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2020 - past and present students, parents teachers and community members are invited to assist with planning anniversary events and sharing past stories and memorabilia. Enquiries to Karen Mauch on 0437 635 133 or 4666 1562. ●

REVITALISED MURAL ADDS TOUCH OF COLOUR BY LINDA STEWART Back in the year 2000 a mural was painted on the public toilets in Warwick's Queens Park as an initiative of the Queensland Government's Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy, facilitated by SDRC Youth worker Pam Burley. With Pam's talent to connect she drew together young people from all walks of life. With the guidance of artists Sue Keong, Carla Clayton and myself, a graffiti-style mural was designed and then painted onto the northern wall of this facility.

When walking around the River 17 years later, I noticed how tired and faded this building appeared, so was inspired to do something about this. I applied for an RADF grant under the auspice of the Southern Downs Industry Education Association, to work with Sue Keong and Githabul woman Kim Charles/Rush. The mural's title is 'Beginning a New Song'. My design depicts the abundance of life within and along the river. With the knowledge and guidance of artist Kim, the design is intended to also pay homage

and respect to the original inhabitants, the Githabul tribe. Once complete, there was still the remaining walls. I never intended to complete this building to my own designs. Councillor Neil Meiklejohn suggested we contact Headspace Warwick, and they agreed to contribute funding to complete the east and west walls. I would like to thank the following - Regional Arts Development Fund, Southern Downs Regional Council, Southern Downs Industry Education Association, Headspace of Warwick and Ian Olsen of Olsen's Hardware.

GARDEN TIME

BEATRICE HAWKINS

YOUR WELL-TRAVELLED COLUMNIST The year is almost at an end and what a challenging year it has been in the garden. The drought has been hard and even though we have had rain over the weekend, it is not over yet. Despite the challenging weather the Warwick Horticultural Society held two wonderful flower shows and a great spring garden competition this year. I am always amazed at the quantity and quality of the entries in these events despite what the weather throws at us. We do have dedicated gardeners in this area and without their support the Society would not be able to conduct the wonderful shows that we do. St Mary's Hall was full of flowers, vegetables and pot plants in both autumn and spring and was enjoyed by the many visitors that attended. Despite the hard winter the gardens judged in spring were a delight thank you to all the people who enter the events the society holds each year as without you we would have nothing. As readers of this column will have realised I have spent a lot of time travelling this year for various reasons and have seen a lot of the eastern side of this wonderful country. I have been literally 'out the back of Bourke', in western Queensland, the northern, central and southern tablelands of NSW and the snowy area of NSW and northern Victoria, as well as some coastal areas. Everywhere the country was suffering from lack of moisture but without doubt

Tree peonies are spectacular ''down south''. the worst was the Bourke and south western Queensland areas that have been drought-declared for seven years. It is so heartbreaking to see the devastating effect the prolonged dry has on this beautiful country of ours. Having been involved in rural life for many years I feel for our farmers and hope and pray that we get drought-breaking rain in the near future. Recently while down in the southern areas I saw some beautiful peonies in full bloom - big and gorgeous with a delicate perfume - unfortunately not something that will grow in our area and I feel privileged to have seen them growing in profusion. Azaleas, hydrangeas, weigelas and rhododendrons were also spectacular and with the cooler climate, the roses were still in beautiful full flower. My garden suffered badly while I was away this time as, with the water restrictions in place, I could not set up an automatic

General Notices V

watering system. I have wonderful neighbours who kept my pot plants alive and as I hadn't had time to plant a vegetable garden before I left, I saved myself some money as the plants weren't there to die! But I will miss having my own tomatoes and melons. I have done a lot of cleaning up, weeding and removing dead things and it is back to at least looking like someone lives here again with the grass cut and the edges trimmed. Vincas are really a wonderful flower as they have come up from where they self-seeded earlier this year and are filling spaces and providing colour. Another surprise today was the discovery of about half a dozen lovely blooms on the Jacobean lilies. I do love them and find they are a most forgiving flower that seem to deliver regardless of the neglect - they just multiply and come back faithfully year

after year, but I admit I was astonished and delighted to see them flowering this late in the season Now for a few thoughts that might make you smile. It's back-breaking work making a garden a nice place to relax in, it is never made by saying "oh how beautiful" and sitting in the shade. It takes a lot of water - most of it in the form of perspiration. But if you wish to be happy forever, make a garden. However, the person who said a job well done doesn't need doing again has never weeded a garden. Now, the common description of a weed is that it is a "plant out of place" but it is also one that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows. It is a plant not only in the wrong place but one that is intent on staying! Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them. A weed is only an unloved flower and a plant whose virtues have never been discovered. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit - wisdom is not putting it in the fruit salad. And philosophy is wondering if that means tomato sauce is a smoothie. My wish for you is a safe and happy Christmas and drought-breaking rain before the first issue of the Free Times is printed in the New Year. Remember - life began in a garden and we can either complain that roses have thorns, or rejoice that thorn bushes have such beautiful flowers! ●

THE SPIN

RIVETING SECOND TEST IN PERTH As I put the final touches on the last Spin of 2018 the clock ticks towards the opening over on the final morning of the second Test against India in Perth. What a simply stunning Test match it has been. The drop in wicket at the new Perth Stadium certainly has provided more tricks than you would find in a magician's hat. Thanks to some magic from Nathan Lyon and some great bowling from the remaining Australian bowling attack in the last couple of sessions on Monday, a win is within the grasp of the muchmaligned Aussie cricket team. Fingers crossed the pundits and fans have not gone the "early crow" and our bowlers can clean up the remaining wickets. On a pitch that has given batsmen and bowlers nightmares and delight in equal portions the Australians led by Tim Paine look to have their foot on the throat of the Indian team. But it certainly hasn't all been beer and skittles - well, skittles maybe, with players from both sides suffering some sickening blows and the odd war wound. Tim Paine, who looks like he would be at home in the front row of a choir showed he is made of much sterner stuff and gave as good as he got in a tough verbal battle with his Indian counterpart Kohli. While there was plenty of chatter no boundaries were crossed but no quarter was given. Whatever way the cards or at least wickets fall later today we are witnessing the resurgence of Test cricket and the rebirth of the Australian squad from a very dark place. They appear to have their detractors by the scruff of the neck and dragging them along for the ride. While the team deserve plenty of accolades for their attitude you can see Justin Langer's persona all over this team. The marriage of coach and captain seems to be a keeper. Aussie fans and players will be hoping for an early Christmas present by around the lunch break in today's play. Yep, we'd all settle for that from Santa or the cricket gods. So this is the final Spin for 2018. Thanks to all those who have contributed to the column again this year and to our loyal readers. Keep an eye out for our 2018 'Year in Review' in the first edition of 2019. In the meantime, I hope you have are on the nice and not the naughty Santa list this year. From our house to yours, my Spin offsider and I wish you all a very Happy and Safe Christmas and we look forward to returning in the New Year to keep you in the loop. - Casey HAVE TO BE IN IT Luke Reardon has what many would consider a dream job these days sharing the caddying duties for former World No 1 golfer and good mate Jason Day travelling to World Class championships played on extraordinary golf courses in amazing locations. "You have to be in it to win it" - accepting my latest piece of sporting Memorabilia from Luke Reardon - courtesy of a lucky raffle ticket. is now based in Ohio. While he still calls Stanthorpe home and enjoys getting back here he says he still has to sometimes pinch himself as he travels with Day to major tournaments and has recently bought a house in Ohio not far from his Day , his wife and children. Home for the Christmas break and enjoying time with family and friends, I caught up with Luke at the Stanthorpe Golf Club on Saturday where he has played many a round of golf and was sponsoring the days play. As well as sponsor Reardon had also delivered a golf bag autographed by Jason Day which he used on this year's PGA Tour and had donated to the club to raffle as a fund raiser. Keen to catch up with Luke for a chat after his official duties were complete I grabbed a couple of tickets in the raffle to support a good cause and waited patiently as the final tickets were sold. I was hoping the winner would be on hand for a photo. No one was more shocked than I was when Luke drew out the winning ticket - my ticket.

Thursday, 20 December, 2018

Just goes to show you have to be in it to win it. An autographed Jason Day golf bag now has pride of place in my lounge room (who needs a Christmas tree anyway) while I come to terms with my unexpected good fortune and wrestle with how I can best display my latest piece of sporting memorabilia. -. While it is a little large to mount and put on the wall alongside the infamous "Gabba" stump, it will probably look out of place alongside the Bradman collection but it is a wonderful problem to have to deal with over Christmas. Thanks to Jason Day for his kind gesture to the club in donating the bag. The raffle incidentally raised $1200 for the club. If that is my Santa present - thank you Santa and apologies to the myriad of disappointed golfers. I suspect Luke, who will travel back to Hawaii straight after Christmas to meet up with Day is still chuckling to himself. I will look forward to seeing Luke carrying a bag just like the one I now call mine, throughout the coming year.

WINX RETURN CONFIRMED Members of the Winx fan club and there are plenty who are non-racing types have been delighted with news that the mare will return for a final autumn campaign giving everyone the chance to watch the mighty mare before she is retired to the breeding barn. The mare returned in tip top condition from a well-earned spell after claiming her record breaking fourth Cox plate connections have announced she will be set for the 2019 Queen Elizabeth .Stakes at Royal Randwick on April 13. The mare will be aiming for her third win in the race with back to back wins in 2017 and 2018 already in the record books. Betting agencies are taking no chances and have already installed the mare as a very short priced favourite ($1.25). It is yet to be confirmed and lots can happen between now and April 13 but her biggest rival could well be stalemate, Caulfield Guineas winner The Autumn Sun Time to make those early arrangements for an April trip to Sydney. GOOD FORM DELIVERS WIN Stanthorpe golfer Terry Roser put the writing on the wall with some good rounds of golf in recent weeks All the signs were there that a win was no far away so it came as no surprise that he returned a score of 44 points to win the Single Stableford event sponsored by Luke Reardon . Roser recorded 24 points on the outward trip and 20 on the run home to secure his win. Keith Allen's round could hardly have been more even. He scored 20 points on both the front and back nine to secure the runners up position. In the Ladies event Helen Jones' score of 36 points was good enough to secure her return to the winner's circle. Margie Locke with a score of 34 points survived a count back to claim the runners up position. Scott Constable secured the pin at 3 and a rundown. Matt Burgess and Ian Harvey collected pins at 12 and 17 respectively. Helen Jones held the ladies pin at three while Margie Locke had best approach at 17. Luke Reardon held the pro-pins at 1/10 and 5/14 and Matt Waterworth 9/18. Matt also produced an eagle at hole six. Junior golfer, Billy Webb, collected the prize for best junior golfer and along with Ian Pickering, Ian Harvey, Nikki Waterworth and Lyn Ludlow picked up a ball in the run down. Club captain, Richard Reardon, who is recovering from recent knee replacement surgery was on hand to help son Luke with the presentation duties and hopes to be back on the course shortly. On Saturday Max Hunter, as he has done for many years will sponsor the preChristmas golf day - a single Stableford round. This is always a great day in the lead up to Christmas and there is a time sheet on the board at the club house. Regular golfers and visitors are reminded that the club's annual Boxing Day Classic, a three ball Ambrose is scheduled for next Tuesday. Long-time sponsors of the event are former football trio Michael Hancock Wes Smith and Tony Herman. This is a very popular event and teams of three - players, visitors and social players are most welcome however you must nominate by adding your name to the time sheet at the club. Registrations close at 8.30am and play commences with a shot gun start at 9.00am. freetimes.com.au

Warwick batsman Carter Billbrough watches a ball from Damian Anderson on to the bat in the first innings of the Mitchell Shield game in Stanthorpe. Billbrough top-scored for Warwick in their win. BRAGGING RIGHTS AND POINTS TO WARWICK Rep cricket returned to the Southern Downs last Sunday as Stanthorpe hosted arch rivals Warwick on the Stanthorpe home turf at the CF White Oval in the Mitchell Shield. Up for grabs was the Bourke Hendry Trophy and when Warwick won the toss they elected to bat under threatening skies. Brodie Frizell and Will Gordon opened the batting for the visitors and the first wicket fell with the score on 22 when Frizell was caught by Sam Dowie off the bowling of Jamie Carnell midway through the fourth over. Gordon followed soon after and with the score at 2/28 Warwick were looking a little shaky. Carter Billbrough came to the wicket at first drop and although wickets fell around him, he provided some much needed stability. Warwick was 4/100 when Cameron Crestani held a catch off Carnell's bowling to dismiss the much travelled Lee Watts. The dismissal brought Michael Bourke to the wicket and the pair upped the ante. Billbrough (80) top scored for the visitors and in his best innings in Mitchell Shield to date found the boundary of 10 occasions during the innings. Mick Bourke showed he is a valuable asset to the team scoring a much needed 72 not out. His runs came off 54 deliveries and included six fours and four sixes as the visitors wrapped up their 50 overs with 243 runs on the board for the loss of six wickets. Jordan Lanza bowled economically without taking a wicket. Team mates Damian Anderson and Jamie Carnell each grabbed a pair. Openers, Captain Jason Lawer and Sam Dowie got the home side off to a good start before Lawer was stumped with the score at 1/37. Sam Dowie scored a determined 41 as the Warwick bowlers claimed the wickets of the dangerous Ben Staley and Jordan Lanza cheaply. Curtis Allen was solid and top scored with 52. Jamie Carnell another Stanthorpe batsman who has been in good club form was out bowled by McLennan for 29, the score at 5/167. With Stanthorpe chasing runs as the weather closed in Cameron Crestani fell cheaply when he was run out by run out by Warwick keeper Jamie Saunders in an impressive piece of fielding Stanthorpe desperately needed a solid partnership but were always behind the required run rate. When Umpires called a halt to play in the 43rd over due to rain the home side was 7/180. Using the Duckworth Lewis System Stanthorpe fell 23 runs short of the required

score giving Warwick a win, the Bourke Hendry Trophy and bragging rights in the local derby. Both Stanthorpe and Warwick have one win and a loss in the Mitchell Shield with one round to play. If Stanthorpe are to play in the finals they must beat Lockyer when they meet on January 8 in Gatton. Warwick will host Central Downs on January 13 and will also be looking to cement a final's berth with a win. PUTTING AWAY THE MALLETS Players across the various disciplines of Croquet in Stanthorpe put away their mallets until after the Christmas New Year break following the last round of weekly games. The Association Croquet group played several close games before wrapping up for the year with a special lunch. Heather Widderick and Andrea Denkewitz went head to head against Pat Schnoor and Jenny Tunbridge. Schnoor scored impressive breaks of four hoops in a row as she and her partner scored a 16-13 win. Meanwhile Joy Newman and Effey Russell had a hard fought win over their opponents Peter Tunbridge and Sharyn Roser. The Association Croquet group will next play on Tuesday January 8th. The Gateball group had a good roll up for their final match of the year. Once again we had eleven players for Friday morning's Gateball games. Two full teams took to the court on Friday with an extra players taking on the refereeing duties in each game. Referees for the day were Sharyn Roser, Val Fancourt, Bill Golding and Andrea Denkewitz. In the opening game Team One (Joy Newman, Pat Schnoor, Bill Golding, Heather Widderick and John Draper had a narrow 12-10 victory over their Team Tow opponents (Grace Howard, Les Williams, Andrea Denkewitz, Jenny Tunbridge and Val Fancourt). In the second game Sharyn Roser took Val Fancourt's place in Team Two and in another tight game it was Team One who again got the chocolates winning 11-10. In Game three Bill Golding took on the refereeing duties and Val Fancourt slotted into Team One in his place. Despite the change in the line-up Team one played exceptionally well and scored an impressive 14-7 win. In the final game Andrea Denkewitz took over as referee and Golding slotted into Team two. Finally Team Two came up with a 14-8 win. The Gateball players will be back on court on January 11th.

CASEY O’CONNOR

Play and a miss from Warwick batsman Lee Watts in the Mitchell Shield game. Watts regularly travels from Bowen to play with Maryvale in the Warwick Club competition. On Sunday he played in the Mitchell Shield side - dodging the ball was no problem after he encountered a large boulder on the Gap.

CHRISTMAS HI-JINKS Sporters got into the Christmas spirit on Sunday with a very enjoyable morning filled with celebrations and hi-jinks. The group warmed into the Christmas celebrations with a BBQ brekkie before heading out for a round of golf. Paul Armstrong had a good round and back in the club house before the real Christmas celebrations got underway he was named the winner of the day ahead of runner up Dick Hilton. Ian Anderson returned the Best Gross score of the round. John Rawlings and Dave McPaul figured in the run downs. Ben Adam and Michael Thompson picked up the Pin Shits at 12 and 17 respectively and Dave Burgess held the Pro Pin. Nikki Waterworth and Ben Adam each left with a meat tray. Rex Bates kindly donated one of his personalised 2019 Calendars featuring his orchids as a raffle prize and that was won by Steve McEvoy before the Sporters got down to their BBQ launch and Christmas celebrations. Thanks to the BBQ volunteers and those who manned the bar. If you have all of your Christmas preparations under control why not join Sporters this Sunday - they tee off between 7.30 and 8.00am. DAVIS SHIELD DAMPENER Due to some scheduling confusion in the Davis Shield fixtures the Stanthorpe side was left without a game on Sunday and the Warwick team travelled to Toowoomba however that game was washed out before a ball was bowled due to the heavy rain. While it is yet to be confirmed it looks likely that following the washout, Warwick will play in the Davis Shield final. They have a won against Lockyer to date. VALLEYS TOO GOOD IN T20 Stanthorpe cricket fixtures reverted to the T20 format due to the representative games on Sunday Valleys and South's met on the CF White Turf and Valleys had a comprehensive win. Valleys batted first and were looking on shaky ground as the South's bowlers ripped into the top order and when Valley's captain Damian Andersson came to the wicket the score was 4/51. Anderson took the bowling blasting 76 not out from 44 deliveries. His innings included seven boundaries and five majors. Steve Martin (22) and Josh Crestani batting at six and seven provided Anderson with good support. At the close of the innings South's were looking at a serious run chase of 176. South's run chase got off to a slow start and failed to gain traction as wickets tumbled and the run rate climbed.

South's made it through to the 20th over but were 104 runs shy of the required total as the ball dominate the bat throughout the innings. Daniel Coup had one of his best performances with the ball taking five wickets for just 14 runs from his four overs. Valleys were also good in the field with Curtis Allen and Steve martin each taking two catches. WANDERERS GET AWAY WITH LUCKY WIN On Sheehan Oval good Wanderers solid start to season 2018/19 continued with another victory but they were lucky to sneak a win against Tenterfield in a game that was much closer than many anticipated. Wanderers took the opportunity to bat first and were travelling well with the score at 4/71 when Jamie Carnell was dismissed in the 11th over. A serious batting collapse followed as Wanderers inexplicably lost their last six wickets adding just 20 runs to the total. Neil Savins 3/5 from three overs and Caleb Hutchins 3/14 from his two overs did the majority of the damage with the ball. It left Tenterfield chasing a very gettable total of 91. Tenterfield opener Jason Murphy looked to be on a mission when he came to the wicket. He fell to the bowling of Tim Harslett at the end of the fifth over but not before smashing 36 runs off 20 balls faced. Tenterfield were 2/49 at that point and looked to be in a comfortable position. When Captain Shaun Merchant was caught by Ky Rashleigh off the bowling of Brock Patti almost at the half way mark the score was 63 and Tenterfield looked to be in command of the situation. However the Tenterfield innings quickly unravelled as Jamie Carnell (3/1) and Brock Patti (4/9) cut through the middle order and tail in a spirited bowling performance. Tenterfield lost their last eight wickets for the addition of only 18 runs and were dismissed midway through the 17th over for 81. Ten short of the Wanderers total. CRICKET FIXTURES THIS WEEKEND There will be no club games played in Warwick on Sunday - all fixtures will be played Saturday. Maryvale play Redbacks at Queens Park turf Wheatvale play Colts at Slade Park Allora play Sovereign at Allora. No fixtures will be played in Stanthorpe this weekend as the clubs break for the Christmas New Year period. The next Stanthorpe fixtures will be played on January 5th when Tenterfield play South's at CF White Oval and Valleys play RSL on Sheehan Oval
