Slice of heaven

Steve Richards has found his piece of paradise in the Yarra Valley. 187490 The team competes in the Australian GT Championship with Steve driving a BMW M6 GT3. Another feature of Yarra Valley living that appeals to the whole family is the great diversity the region offers. "We can do so many different things around here and we're in one of the most beautiful areas of Australia. I love mountain bikes so I'm hanging out for all these new bike trails to open." "There are all the wineries for lunch and Killara Estate is one of our favourites. I like to try anything new but I'm also a steak and three veg sort of guy." "For a picnic or a drive my favourite place is up along the Black Spur where there are some

great little spots." "It's great that the Healesvile to Yarra Glen train line is coming back and that the whole Yarra Valley keeps moving forward with new things." When asked about the way children learn to drive he said he would like to see more driver education in schools. With his own children now on the road he is a big fan of defensive driving courses. "We put ours through defensive driving courses and all our nieces and nephews get a defensive driving course for their 18th birthday." "It's not about them learning to send the car sideways, it is just giving them an experience of how to use the brakes and steering to

get them out of a tight situation." A not so well known fact is that Steve has a restricted pilots licence which he wants to progress into a private pilots qualification. "With the two airports in the Yarra Valley it would be great to be able to take off and head in whatever direction we feel like on the spur of the moment." As both a high-achiever and a father he has his own message on what it takes to be successful at life. "Life is tough and anything you desire out of it is going to come with personal challenges but if you're organised and prepared to make some sacrifices then there is no reason you can't achieve what you want."

Steve Richards spent 15 years as a V8 Supercar driver and has won five Bathurst 1000s, so he knows a thing or two about high pressure environments. He grew up in Melbourne's eastern suburbs and from early years he had an eye on living in the Yarra Valley. "Everyone aspires to have their own little piece of paradise and for me that's the Yarra Valley," he said. "Having grown up around the area for so many years I wanted to live in a peaceful, beautiful place, that's what I consider is important to me and my family." "I work in a high performance, maximum pressure world but when I drive through Lilydale and get on the Warburton Highway it's like a load lifts off my shoulders." "I drive away from the real world into a world of peace and that's how I feel about the Yarra Valley." Steve, with wife Angela and children Clay and Priya, found their three and a half acre haven 10 years ago. He says it's a great place for families and kids to grow up in. "Kids have got access to so many different things to do out here, things that you don't have if you live in suburbia," he said. "Priya's passion is horse riding so we built an arena here at home. She can come back from school, finish her homework and go outside and ride." With a father and a grandfather so immersed in motorsport it's no surprise that Clay is following in their tyre-tracks. He is racing gokarts at the moment and wants to develop his motorsport career further. "Most weekends when we are home we are either at horse riding or go-karting so it keeps us pretty busy." Apart from his cameo appearances in Supercar races, Steve is focussed on his own business, Steve Richards Motorsport, which he and Ange run together. "I love what I do now more than anything I have done before. We are a family team, not a corporation team, so we are both fully involved."

On right, SHHAG members Jane Judd and Cr Fiona McAllister with a local family during Healesville Hospital campaigning. 176447 that the lack of maternity services in the Yarra Ranges needed to be addressed. It's an issue we'll continue to follow this year with the hope of forcing some action. And it's an issue that would have flown under the radar without SHHAG bringing it to our attention. The Mail team is ever-grateful for the community interaction we enjoy. Our Facebook page is one avenue for these conversations, and we reached out there to find out who our readers thought worthy of the Person of the Year title. Now-retired Mail journalist Kath Gannaway received many nominations following her departure from the paper in September.

Readers described her as "a wonderful supporter of our community over many years. A woman of immense integrity and heart." Kersten Gentle said she'd had many differing points of view with Kath over the years. "But she truly should be recognised for her service to our community," she said. "So many keyboard warriors these days attack people who don't share the same opinion. "However Kath, following in the footsteps of Mardie, has ensured reasonably fair and open discussion within the community. "I for one truly admire her community work through her time at Mail." Another person who racked up the votes was Garry Christie.

Another said he was "directly responsible for getting stuff done/fixed in Healesville" and a third wrote that "Garry is just a fabulous human being who is the heart of Healesville!" Departing Wesburn Primary School teacher Mrs Hochkins received several mentions, as did Healesville Inter-Church Community Care Inc (HICCI). Other applause went to emergency services volunteers, district nurses in Healesville, "Angela Fleay for her exceptional cooking skills, helping others and care given to horses attending race meetings" and Kirsty and Steve Bowness for their cystic fibrosis fundraising.

Selecting our Person of the Year is never an easy task. This community is filled with passionate, hard-working people who quietly go about making the Yarra Valley and Upper Yarra a great place to be. In terms of impact, it was hard to look past Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) for the nod for 2018 - the Group of the Year. In March, SHHAG chair Jane Judd spoke out about cuts to health in the Yarra Valley and extended waiting lists. Then in September, she shared the group's submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry into Perinatal Services and spoke to the inquiry's recommendations. The inquiry recommended that the Department of Human Services engage with public hospitals to look at expanding admitting rights for private midwives - a move that could return maternity services to Healesville Hospital. Dozens of mums from across the Yarra Ranges reached out to share their thoughts on the story, and the Mail's Maternity Push campaign was born. We spoke to Yarra Valley Midwives and covered SHHAG's public meeting on the issue at The Memo on 4 October. We shared stories from mothers who gave birth at Healesville and mothers who wish they could have welcomed their child into the world close to home. Candidates in the November State Election even weighed in on the issue, conceding

IN BRIEF Shots fired in Woori Yallock

Balloon pilot praise

Police arrested a 50-year-old man over a shooting incident in Woori Yallock. They responded to reports of shots fired this morning (Friday 21 December). Investigators said a man allegedly fired a number of shots into the yard of his Allsops Road home just after 5am. Two women who were home at the time were uninjured. Police arrested the man without incident.

By Michael Doran CFA firefighters have commended the swift action of the balloon pilot who landed his burning craft safely in Gruyere on Boxing Day. The balloon, from Go Wild Ballooning in Coldstream, took to the air around 5.30am from Wandin Park with 15 passengers and the pilot. Shortly after take-off an on-board fire forced the pilot to make an emergency landing in a paddock near Cahillton Road in Gruyere. The pilot was able to bring the balloon down under control to a safe landing for all onboard. The CFA were alerted to the emergency prior to the landing and arrived on scene just after 6am to find the balloons basket and five gas cylinders fully alight. It took crews from Coldstream and Gruyere using six trucks to contain the fire to an area covering six by eight metres. The fire was declared under control by the CFA at 6.38am. Coldstream CFA Captain, Sean Bethell said, “Great job by all who attended the balloon incident on Boxing Day. Pilot did a great job to get the passengers to safety on the ground under stressful circumstances and crews from Coldstream and Gruyere CFA worked well together to extinguish and keep the gas cylinders cool till they finished venting. Thank you to Victoria Police and investigators, well done all.” Victoria Police reported that one passenger suffered minor injuries and was taken to Maroondah Hospital for observation. In a statement, National Commercial Ballooning Industry Spokesperson Damian Crock said a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the accident will be conducted by the Air Transport Safety Bureau. “The pilot, one of Australia’s most experienced commercial hot air balloon pilots with approximately 5500 hours in command, flew the aircraft under challenging circumstances and managed to land the balloon safely and

Gypsy Joker gang Police presence increased in Healesville during a visit from the Gypsy Joker outlaw motorbike gang, which stayed in town from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 January. A number of Public Order Response Unit vehicle were seen in town, and it is believed the motorcycle gang were camping at Toolangi. Senior Sergeant Kevin Barrie at Lilydale Police said the members would leave on Tuesday to ride to their clubhouse in Wodonga. “I believe the plan was they were going to stay there for one night but the weather turned and so they’ve stayed a few extra nights,” Sen Sgt Barrie said. “I don’t know of any major problems and there haven’t been any reports or any major issues.”

Gruyere landing spot for the hot-air balloon that caught fire on Boxing Day. 189017 then evacuate the 15 passengers and himself,” he said. Go Wild Ballooning was established in 1989 from the Fraser family’s vineyard, Tarraford, located near Yarra Glen. The company lays claim to having pioneered the hot air balloon-

ing industry in the Yarra Valley and says that ‘passenger safety is our first priority.’ Commercial ballooning is regulated by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and requires an Air Operator Certificate and pilots must hold a Commercial Pilot Licence (Balloon), also issued by the authority.

Have an early say on Coldstream school By Casey Neill Yarra Ranges Council is urging residents to share their thoughts on plans for an autism school in Coldstream. At their Tuesday 18 December meeting, councillors agreed to seek public feedback on the proposal for land on Kelso Street within Fairway Park, near the preschool. Lyrebird College is asking to lease about 4000 square metres of clear grassland for five years, with a potential four-year second term, to establish a school for children with an autism spectrum disorder. Ryrie Ward Councillor Fiona McAllister encouraged residents to share their thoughts about the potential lease before submissions closed on Tuesday 22 January. "We want to know what the community thinks before we move ahead," she said. "This is a particularly difficult time of the year for community engagement, with many people on holidays or taking some time off,

and we know the park in Coldstream is a wellloved area." The council will use submissions and feedback to form its final recommendation to approve or deny the lease at its meeting on 12 February. If councillors approved the lease, Lyrebird College would need to submit a planning application for any proposed works to take place on the site. This would go through its own notification and consultation period. The Mail flagged the proposal late last year. A council report said the college would add to the area's status as an educational precinct, and produce positive community outcomes. Lyrebird College spokeswoman Melissa Handbury said the school would cater for children from Prep to Year 10. "If all goes to plan, Lyrebird College will open in January 2020 with an initial enrolment of 12 students in two classes," she said.

She said leasing the vacant council land would re-energise the precinct and provide an opportunity to share resources and expertise. "We see ourselves forming a strong connection with the whole Coldstream community," she said. Ms Handbury said there were very few options available for parents of children with autism spectrum disorders outside of the public sector. "In general, there are limited schools in Victoria specialising in the care and education of children with an autism spectrum disorder," she said. She said Lyrebird College would provide a quality, tailored and outcome-focused education option in a fun and safe setting. "Our classes will have a high staff to student ratio with each student receiving 1:1 learning time as necessary to enhance their learning and to assist in achieving their goals," she said. To read more and make a submission, visit www.yrc.vic.gov.au/kelsostlease.

Skate park graffiti Police arrested a 26-year-old Coburg woman and charged her with criminal damage to the Warburton skate park. They alleged she defaced the site with graffiti. She was bailed to appear at the Ringwood Magistrates' Court at a later date.

Redwood signs stolen Thieves stole signs from the Redwood Forest car park in East Warburton. In a post on Facebook, local councillor Jim Child said a number of signs, ranging from disability parking signs to way finding signs, had been taken. “After all the hard work by Parks Victoria, Yarra Ranges Council and Victoria Police to make the forest a better place to visit, this blatant unwarranted act of theft has cost us as a community thousands of dollars,” he said. Warburton Police Sergeant Tom Wilkinson said it was a disappointing outcome. “It’s disappointing as there’s been a great deal of work conducted by VicRoads and Yarra Ranges Council to make this happen, and then we’ve got some person who has undermined that good work,” he said. Anyone with information should call Warburton Police on 5966 2006.

Thieves stole a white Toyota Hilux ute from a factory area in Lilydale Road, Healesville, between 5pm on 5 January and 11.15am on 6 January. It's believe the white ute was involved in a burglary at Gulf Station in Yarra Glen between 7pm on 5 January and 10am on 6 January, as police found the vehicle dumped outside a home opposite the historic site. Yarra Glen Sergeant Richard Coulson said the thieves took gardening tools including a chainsaw and mower. He said they also broke into an unregistered white Mitsubishi ute with a silver tray which he believes they used to tow two trailers, one which had a green John Deere mower on it. Anyone who might have seen suspicious activity should call Yarra Glen police on 9730 1296 or make a confidential report via Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.

YEAR IN REVIEW

What made news in 2018 Warburton Mountain Bike Destination Project Yarra Ranges Council and the community have clashed over plans for the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination Project throughout the year. In May, the Mail reported that Warburton was looking to become one of Australia’s premier locations for mountain bike riding under a plan to make nearly 100 kilometres of new bike trails in the bush near the town. Residents like Bee Rawlinson said in June that the community should have an opportunity for input sooner rather than later. “I’m not opposed to recreational bike riding, I just want to make sure it is appropriate and that everyone gets an opportunity to have a say at the pre-planning stage. “I feel like I didn’t know anything about this and I just want proper consultation. This sentiment continued from many as the year went on, following consultation sessions and announcements. The Old Warburton Residents’ Association (OWRA) formed following the release of detailed maps of the proposed trails, the majority of which they say will be in and around ‘Old Warburton’ and have a detrimental impact on local residents. “We’re not opposed to mountain biking; we’re opposed to inappropriate development. That statement by OWRA spokesman Damian Flynn largely encapsulated the tone of a public meeting held at the Old Mechanics Institute Hall in Warburton by the group in June. Many of the people who attended were back at the hall the following night for Yarra Ranges Council’s consultation session. The council held five drop in sessions during the week including at Warburton, Yarra Junction and Montrose. In July, the Federal Government announced $3 million in Federal Government funding for the project.

YEAR IN REVIEW Manager Simon Hall said more than 400 people had signed a petition asking Yarra Ranges Council to look at traffic and pedestrian safety at the intersection, to see if signalisation or a roundabout could be introduced. Eildon MP Cindy McLeish encouraged local residents to make their voices heard about the intersection after writing to Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan in 2017 to ask the State Government to investigate potential upgrades. In response, the minister said that following a VicRoads investigation the government believed the intersection to be appropriate and would not support any modifications to improve safety. In October, VicRoads again said it would stay as it is, but community advocacy looks set to continue. In November, we reported that pedestrian safety barriers at the intersection had been destroyed in a crash weeks earlier and those crossing the road were left in a vulnerable state. Shortly after we published the story, the barriers were repaired. Healesville residents and visitors were invited to share their thoughts and ideas for a re-design of the Green Street/Maroondah Highway intersection and Taber Lane area to make it more pedestrian-friendly. Feedback shut down ideas for a plaza, but just what changes will be made to the area remain undecided. Maternity Push We were overwhelmed with the response to our 8 September article about the push for maternity services at Healesville Hospital. So much so that we decided to throw our support behind it. In the lead-up to the 24 November State Election, we took a close look at just why the community was so vocal about returning maternity services to Healesville. We spoke to midwives and mums from across the Yarra Ranges, and to State Election candidates for their take on the issue. Readers were vocal about the lack of options for expectant mothers, with most having to travel to the Angliss.

Eildon MP Cindy McLeish with a letter from the Roads Minister saying the government will not upgrade the intersection. We’ll continue our push this year. State Election Plenty of pledges flowed from candidates in the lead-up to the 24 November State Election. The ALP’s Sally Brennan put in a solid effort for Eildon but fell short against Liberal incumbent Cindy McLeish. In Evelyn, there was a changing of the guard as

Christine Fyffe retired. Bridget Vallence kept the seat in Liberal hands despite Gail Ritchie gaining some ground for the ALP. Timber In April, the State and Federal governments extended the Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs) covering the Central Highlands, East Gippsland

and the North East, bringing them into line with two other agreements that expire in 2020. The two-year extension was welcomed by the broader timber industry as providing certainty for the next two years, but the Greens and environmental groups have decried the move saying it opens a two-year window of opportunity for “untold damage” to Victoria’s native forests. In May, six sawmill operators known as the G6, including three in Central Highlands, accused the State Government of creating uncertainty and confusion in the industry through what they said was a major conflict of interest over the government’s purchase of the Heyfield (Gippsland) sawmill. In an open letter to the Premier, they said: “We just want to know about the future of jobs, communities and the timber industry in regional Victoria.” Following on, in August, timber industry operators from across Victoria were in Melbourne as a petition signed by more than 2000 supporters was presented in Parliament. Deputy Leader of The Nationals and Member for Euroa, Steph Ryan MP, presented the petition which called on the government to honour Timber Supply Agreements (TSAs) signed before 30 June 2017. The also G6 put forward a proposal to transition to plantation timber in August. In an open letter to Premier Daniel Andrews the group said the Bridging the Gap plan would secure the future of the state’s timber industry and end the uncertainty they had been campaigning against for six months. In October, a Coalition State Government confirmed it would not establish the proposed Great Forest National Park in the Central Highlands. Victorian Association of Forest Industries (VAFI) CEO Tim Johnston said Mr Guy’s commitment was “a positive step for the timber and forestry industry in the state, and he looks forward to seeing the detailed policy platforms from the Coalition”. A State Labor Government spokesperson said: “We continue to work with industry, unions and environmental groups to ensure Victoria balances conservation outcomes with jobs.”

PLACES TO GO

Much to do at the zoo There's plenty to see and do at Mansfield Zoo, including meeting all of the animals or you can even camp overnight if you're game. If you love animals and a fun family day out, Mansfield Zoo is the place to go, and the meerkats have recently arrived too. The zoo features a large menagerie of native and animals from around the world including two rare white lions, two tawny lions, monkeys (capuchins, marmosets, rhesus and bonnet), deer, camels, bison, alligator, wombats and plenty more. The Zoo Keeper feeding tour is a great time to be at Mansfield Zoo. The four lions are fed at 1.30pm each weekend and Victorian school and public holidays, followed by feeding of the Meerkat Mob. Take the opportunity to pat one of the friendly dingoes who walk around with a keeper while the lions are being fed. You can also feed most the animals by hand every day while you wander the expansive grounds. A small spade is provided to feed the more gregarious animals, like the camels, who will run off with the spade if they can. There are sambar, fallow deer and kangaroos roaming the grounds with you, along with guinea fowl and peacocks. Bring a picnic lunch or use the free BBQs, just watch that the deer don't steal your food from you. For the more adventurous, there's nothing like trying to sleep to the sound of the lion's roar. Overnight campers are welcome from September 1 to May 31 each season, but you do need to book a spot. Bring your own gear and set yourself up for a camping trip with a difference and take the opportunity to roam the zoo after hours.

The Mansfield Zoo is open every day from 10am to 6pm.

More information is available on the website www.mansfieldzoo.com.au, Facebook

40 years helping Warburton By Michael Doran The links between Warburton and the Seventh Day Adventist Church are well recorded and one of those links, The Adcare Community Op Shop, is continuing its good work within the community. The Op Shop has made a $1000 donation to the Children's First Foundation Australia to support the recently separated Bhutan twins, Nima and Dawa. Team Leader Kathy Kearns said the group at the shop had been following the story and were moved to help out with their aftercare. "We were quite aware of the twins and their family and felt compelled to help," she said.

Our donation will go towards the aftercare for the twins from the operation and for when they return home to Bhutan." "We currently have two charity projects overseas that we help out. In Thailand we give to a school and in Cambodia we gave a donation to build some incinerators used for burning hospital waste. "We have been in Warburton for more than 40 years and the need for our services is growing all the time. We get a lot of referrals from the Redwood Centre, particularly in winter when homeless people are most at risk." "We help out women from the Benwerrin refuge with furniture, money or whatever they need to get back on their feet. We give support

to the people in need who use LinC and the Redwood Centre, we help anyone who needs it. "We have set aside a special area for single mothers to come in that has a little carpeted area where their kids can play. We say that for any child up to eight years old they can buy 10 items for $5 and we have lots of items to choose from. The biggest problem we have is people dumping rubbish, especially mattresses, which they usually leave right under the "No Mattresses' sign. It costs us a lot of money that we could otherwise have used to help people in need." That might be a simple way for the community to help sustain the work of this long-running Warburton charity.

ENTERTAINMENT

East meets west at Linden Gate By Michael Doran For the first time in the Yarra Valley, the ChineseAustralian Contemporary Artists (CACA) will be exhibiting at Art at Linden Gate from Friday 11 January until Monday 11 February, 2019. This group of artists have formed their own strong reputations over many years but it was only in July that they came together to exhibit as a group. Reggie Clark of Art at Linden Gate said, "The members of CACA have received many national accolades over the past 20 years. Striving to bring two diverse cultures together as a group of artists born in China and raised in Australia, the artists draw from their unique individual experiences to offer exquisite contemporary art. "First time visitors to their exhibitions have often expressed surprise when the artists go beyond traditional Chinese art forms such as ink painting, calligraphy and folk art. This exhibition is bringing world-class contemporary Chinese art to the Yarra Valley." Two of the artists exhibiting are Hong Fu and Pei Pei He, both of whom have had their work entered into the prestigious Archibald Prize. Hong Fu arrived in Australia in 1990 and has painted many celebrated Australians, including Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, Cathy Freeman, Sir James Gobbo and local artist Ernst Fries. He has exhibited across Australia and his 55 solo exhibitions included Italy, UK, China and four other Asian countries. Pei Pei He has a fascination with the rhythm and movement of Melbourne's urban landscape and city life, which she depicts with calligraphy in a blend of western and eastern elements. She was born in Shanghai during the Chinese Cultural Revolution and completed her studies at Melbourne University in 2005. Art at Linden Gate was established by sculptor, Ernst Fries in 1985 and his daughter

Echo Cai, Zai Kuang, Pei Pei He and Hong Fu are exhibiting at Linden Gate. 188687 Reggie Clark manages the gallery as well as the on-site accommodation. Although in his 80s, Ernst Fries is still creating his flowing stainless-

steel works in the studio at Linden Gate. The exhibition opening is on Saturday 12 January from 1-3pm and all are welcome with

Aquaman is an entertaining but empty-headed superhero film. When the zealous Atlantean King Orm (Patrick Wilson) declares war on the surface world, his half-brother Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Mamoa) must claim his birthright as King of Atlantis to avert the war. Aquaman is thrilling to look at, with stunningly vibrant visual design and well-composed action scenes featuring wide shots and impressive long takes, yet has thinly-written characters and a slow, sloppy narrative. Mamoa has a relaxed bogan charm as Arthur, but it's hard to invest yourself in his journey because his co-star Amber Heard (as Atlantean princess Mera) is a more compelling and developed lead. Mera is far more quali-

fied to rule Atlantis than Arthur: she's smarter, more focused and more perceptive than Arthur. The pacing is erratic, dawdling across nearly 2.5 hours yet jumping from one nebulous goal or setting to the next, and the plot muddies Arthur's own character arc. Arthur seeks an ancient trident that will secure his claim to the Atlantean throne. He develops some humility and responsibility during the journey, implying that he doesn't need the trident to save the day. However, the film's climax still hinges on his possession of the trident, undermining his paltry character growth. Aquaman's action and dazzling visuals cushion the excessive length, but the film is still unfocused, poorly-paced and features a ripped yet boring hero. - Seth Lukas Hynes Tuesday, 8 January, 2019

SOCIALLY SPEAKING...

Covering the foothills of the Yarra Ranges & Murrindindi Shires

The editor’s desk The Mail team is now back on deck and looking forward to another year of reporting on the Yarra Ranges. The soaring temperatures on Friday 4 January put the hills and valley front of mind, even as we enjoyed the final days of our Christmas/New Year break. The bushfire threat could stick around until April, from what we're hearing locally. We're full of praise for the area's volunteer firefighters who were on standby, prepared for the worst as the temperature soared above 40 degrees. We'll be bringing our readers some fire safety messages and advice over the coming weeks. We'll also be preparing our coverage for the 10th anniversary of Black Saturday. The devastation is still fresh in many people's minds, and we're mindful of avoiding stirring up painful memories unnecessarily. Our focus will be on the way the community banded together to rebuild. We'll touch on the horror the fires caused - it can't be ignored - but will look more closely at the lessons learnt, the improvements made, the friendships formed in the aftermath. We want to reconnect with people we spoke to immediately after the 9 February blazes, and share stories previously untold. Anyone who'd like to share their story via interview or a first-person account is welcome to reach out on 5957 3711 or editor@mailnewsgroup.com.au. - Casey Neill

INSTA-PIC

Santa enlisted firefighters across the Yarra Ranges to help him to greet good boys and girls in the lead-up to Christmas. On most occasions, like here in Belgrave, he was handing out lollies to with a jolly ''ho ho ho!''. Follow @MailCommunity on Instagram for more shots from across the hills and valley, and tag us in your local pictures for a chance to see them in print.

Water we have here? Water is such an interesting subject. Among other things is the fact that when it freezes it expands. We suffered a bitterly cold morning in Healesville a couple of months back. Lots of pipes burst! While travelling to a friend's house with this problem, I came across two vehicles attending to the same. One is a Yarra Ranges Shire vehicle, the other is a Veolia Water truck. From Dandenong! Kilometres cost money. What's our shire doing here? Rates have gone through the roof and we are using a water company based in Dandenong. Something stinks! So, I do what I do, and have a look at this unknown business. Shock! Horror! They are a huge French company that intends to 'earn' $50 billion in two years. They're into water and garbage - appropriate! I believe we have our own Yarra Valley Water, why aren't we using them? Yarra Ranges Shire, there are questions here, we expect answers. Alan Share, Healesville

A right to choose The folks who take party favours and pop pills that are expensive at music festivals or anywhere else know the risks. The reason that they still do it is to be edgy which is supposed to be cool. They are exercising their personal freedoms that the diggers of the Anzac fought and died for. The nanny stater has no role in this issue. Folks must learn to be responsible for their own words and deeds. Anyone who depends on governments and the police to keep them safe needs to get another life. Maybe it is sometimes a hard lesson but freedom means the right to choose your own poison Stanley R Burgess, Healesville

Bike project backlash I completely agree with Donna McIntosh, who expressed outrage that our council would spend such huge sums of money on bike tracks for tourists. Like the vast majority of residents I have no interest in riding bikes around in the bush and I don't financially benefit from tourism. Does anyone really believe that having 165,000 extra people in our town every year will make our lives better? These millions of dollars would be much better spent directly on things that benefit our community. I do not consent to my rates and taxes being squandered on this expensive, intrusive and totally unnecessary project. Damien Flynn, Warburton 18 MAIL

NEWS

Put your hard waste out Yarra Ranges Council is encouraging residents to check their hard waste collection date and are reminding people to only to put their waste out the weekend before their pickup time. Annual hard waste, bundled branches and metals collections will be taking place across the Yarra Ranges from mid-January to March 2019, giving residents a chance to dispose of appliances, furniture and excess branches from their properties. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Tony Stevenson, encouraged residents to check what they can put out for collection and make the most of their collection. "The annual hard waste collection is a great chance to clean up and clear out our properties and gardens," Cr Stevenson said. "It's an essential part of the year for many residents, but it's also a very ugly time to be a

visitor coming through the area. "We're mindful of the fact that the warmer months make up a large portion of our busiest tourist season, but it's also the best time for our contractor to get their trucks to some of the more remote areas of the Yarra Ranges. "It's worth taking the time to check Council's website, see what you can put out and when, and make sure you only put out your hard waste on the Sunday (weekend) before your collection week begins. "Ideally, we can all use the service without piles of rubbish sitting on nature strips too long." Hard waste, bundled branches and metals should be placed neatly in the same area that your kerbside bins are collected and must be able to be easily lifted by 1 or 2 people.

Household items, such as mattresses and furniture items, up to ten pieces of timber (excluding fencing), window glass, mirrors and shower screens (securely wrapped and marked glass), TVs, computers and electronic equipment can be placed out in up to three cubic metres. Residents can also dispose of unlimited metals, whitegoods and equipment, though fridge doors need to be removed when placed out for collection (to ensure child safety). Acids, fuels, cleaners and other chemicals cannot be put out for hard waste collection, but can be disposed of through the Detox your home mobile collections organised by Sustainability Victoria. Check your hard waste collection date at yarraranges.vic.gov.au/myneighbourhood

Yarra Ranges Council is reminding residents to ensure their only putting their items out for collection on the Sunday before the collection week.

CoRE steps forward in 2019 By Michael Doran Healesville CoRE is planning on a big 2019 as it pushes forward with its project for Healesville to become a net-zero emissions town by 2027. President Jeff Barlow said "We still have a lot of work to do to reach more people in the community and we are in the process of setting up systems, processes and events to do that." To help spread the word, the group has set up two Community Information Sessions for Monday 25 February at the Memo. The first session is at 1.30pm and the second at 7.30pm and will be launched by Yarra Ranges Mayor, Tony Stevenson. These sessions will be the launch for the Healesville Community Solar & Battery Offering and there will be information on the planned bulk-buy and what is required from

a technology point of view. There will also be details on financing packages, the electronic monitoring system, called an Ubi, from Mondo Power and the planned Healesville microgrid. For those interested in the concept of community microgrids a good place to start is www.onestepoffthegrid.com.au which has details of the projects in Yackandandah and Euroa. To learn how the Mondo Power Ubi works and its role in the project visit www.mondo. com.au/community Healesville CoRE is a community volunteer organisation and is always seeking more people to assist with a varied range of tasks, currently looking for a Community Engagement Manager to join the voluntary Central Committee.
