Geelong Businessman, Mark Ward has ownership of the Mill Markets group and brings years of expertise to this amazing concept. The Mill Markets operate three massive venues located in Ballarat, Daylesford and Geelong. With a total of over 12,000 square metres of undercover floor space, (3 acres), treasure hunters have the opportunity to spend many hours browsing and meandering through the eclectic mix of products. There is a fantastic variety of home decor, furniture, records, vintage clothing, books, fine china, glassware, industrial items, jewellery, antiques as well as Australian pottery, homewares, memorabilia, retro fashions and collectables. We also have many stalls selling new products and have gift vouchers for those people who have everything! All goods are from the 1850’s right through to present day.

Mill Markets lease space to hundreds of dealers, which allows small business operators and collectors who otherwise could not afford the overheads of their own shops, to showcase their goods. This equates to a wide and diverse range of products, available and open to the public, seven days a week. Enjoy a wonderful trip down memory lane through hundreds and thousands of items available for purchase at all three locations. With a combined 450 stall holders over three venues, there is always something for everyone. Travel The Amazing Mill Markets ‘Golden Triangle’ and enjoy quality food and coffee at each. All venues open 7 days 10am-6pm (excluding Christmas Day)

FOOD AND WINE

YOU don't have to be a foodie to enjoy everything the Bellarine has to offer. Whether it's a casual meal or a relaxed picnic on the beach you'll find plenty of options. Of course if you want to go full-scale dining, then you can. You also don't need to be a wine connoisseur to appreciate the amazing coolclimate wineries on the peninsula. With cellar doors open to the public, winery hopping is very popular. 360Q (360q.com.au) in Queenscliff boasts superb views and attracts diners from other parts of the Bellarine, Geelong and Melbourne. Whether it's a casual lunch, an intimate dinner or a special occasion, 360Q offers waterfront dining at affordable prices. 360Q is also a popular spot for breakfast or brunch. The Mex (themex.com.au) is a much-loved favourite in Ocean Grove. With the best Tex Mex on the peninsula and a popular cocktail bar with regular happy hours, The Mex has been an Ocean Grove institution for years. The Mex is a fun, vibrant place and prides itself on its cocktails (try the margaritas) and serves up fresh Tex Mex fare from sizzling fajitas to flavoursome burritos and enchanting enchiladas. PIKNIK (piknik.com.au) is a converted Golden Fleece roadhouse and is always busy. A long lunch at PIKNIK is a unique experience. PIKNIK is a unique fully licenced cafe-restaurant and pantry at the heart of the Bellarine taste trail. The chefs enjoy being creative and embracing local and seasonal produce. Basils Farm (basilsfarm.com.au) is much more than a winery. Wine is at the forefront, though, with a cellar door that offers Basils Farm wines for tasting and purchase.

Basils Cafe is proving to be a very popular spot and has a seasonal menu that features dishes inspired by fresh produce from the onsite garden. If it's not fresh from the garden, it's direct from one of Basils Farm's specialty local producers. Few things are as iconic about Ocean Grove as Driftwood Cafe (thedriftwoodcafe.com.au). The popular Terrace eatery is busy all year round and cooking is their passion. Driftwood uses only the finest and freshest ingredients to create dishes that will fill your belly and warm your heart. Whether it's breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack, Driftwood will have something to please your rumbling tummy. The Bungalow (thebungalowrestaurant.com.au) is named after the building a 1930s Californian bungalow. Nestled in the heart of Drysdale, the Bungalow is the spot in town for breakfast and lunch and anything in between and for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. Thinking of taking dinner down to the beach? Ocean Grove Marketplace Fish and Chips (5256 2099, OceanGrove Marketplace) can sort the entire family out. You can pick up all the usual favourites as well as burgers, souvlakis and steak sandwiches. Terindah Estate (terindahestate.com) has a little bit of everything for everyone. Award-winning wines are only the beginning. With sweeping views across the bay, The Shed does superb breakfasts and lunches and dinner Saturdays. The floor to ceiling glass gives diners sublime views. The Deck Bar serves up lunch daily. Laze back in the comfy lounges or pull up a stool.

2019

The first thing to know about fishing the estuary is that high and low tides are generally two hours later than at Port Phillip Heads. Fishing around the tide changes is best to avoid the hard-running currents of mid-tides. Boaties and land-based anglers can both do well anywhere along the river between Lake Connewarre and the mouth at Barwon Heads. The lower reaches fish well for whiting, small salmon, trevally and mullet, while the latter along with bream and luderick are taken further up the river. Of course, the Barwon River is also renowned as one of Victoria’s premier big-mulloway fisheries. Best baits for the river are anything fresh, especially Bass yabbies and sandworms, although mulloway are usually taken on squid or mullet. Popular frozen baits include pippies, prawns, squid and pilchards. PIERS AND HARBOURS Portarlington Harbour has become a fishing hotspot since its upgrade in recent years. Anglers casting baits from the breakwall or into the harbour itself often catch good-size snapper, while squid are taken regularly around the lights at night. St Leonards Pier provides similar opportunities to Portarlington Harbour, with larger catches of whiting added to the list. A special tip for both locations is to fish them during rough weather for the largest snapper. Queenscliff Harbour’s current runs hard and fast, so this spot’s best fished either side of high and low tide, which is usually between two or three hours after the advertised times for Port Phillip Heads. Anglers casting soft-plastic lures into the harbour’s main channel, called The Cut, do well on trevally. Salmon and the occasional pinkie snapper are also taken, while squid often take artificial jigs around high tide in the evenings.

OFFSHORE Boaties need to exercise caution passing through the Barwon River mouth and The Rip, but once offshore the fishing can be excellent. Whiting, snapper, flathead and various varieties of shark are the main targets, although seasonal opportunities exist for exciting game species such as kingfish and even bluefin tuna. Squid and pilchards are favoured frozen baits, with fillets of freshly caught salmon or barracouta popular when fishing ‘out wide’. Boat anglers should time trips to coincide only with low-swell and light-wind conditions while ensuring they have on board a full complement of functional safety gear in a fully seaworthy vessel.. INSIDE THE BAY At the mouth of Port Phillip Bay, the notorious Rip also requires full attention to boating safety given its strong tidal flow and sometimes-rough conditions. However, The Rip is also renowned for producing kingfish in season and large schools of surface-feeding salmon year-round. Closer to shore, squid and whiting are abundant all the way from the Lonsdale Bight to Leopold. Waters from 3m to 5m deep are generally preferred, especially grounds broken with sand holes and weed beds. Swan Bay, between Queenscliff and St Leonards offers sheltered fishing for a variety of species, particularly flathead, whiting, trevally, squid and, after dark, gummy sharks. Anglers fishing beyond the mouth and inside the bay after Duck Island must stay within the main channel to avoid Swan Bay's marine park zone. Between Port Phillip and Corio bays, the area between Portarlington and Point Henry is renowned for big snapper, while flathead are also taken in good numbers. Popular boat ramps for bay anglers are available at Queenscliff, St Leonards, Portarlington and Clifton Springs. 12402991-CG51-18

FISHIN’ TIPS

Whiting, snapper, flathead, calamari - the Bellarine Peninsula is blessed with an abundance of some of Australia’s best species of table fish. And visitors don’t even need a boat to get in among the action, with a variety of land-based locations available to put anglers in reach of the catch of a lifetime. However, anyone with a boat is advised to observe all safety regulations and practices to ensure a pleasant day on the water. SURF FISHING The ocean-facing side of the Bellarine Peninsula offers some excellent opportunities to tangle with a range of species. Long and sandy, 13th has plenty of deep gutters and drop-offs that fish well for salmon and, after dark, gummy sharks. Small swells are best, especially when the water’s relatively weed-free. Ocean Grove Beach can produce snapper and even the elusive mulloway, with the area around the 19W car park popular. Ocean Grove fishes best on low tides when surf anglers can cast into deeper water. Point Lonsdale’s back beach works well on high tide, especially for anglers targeting salmon with lures or bait.

12401715-CG51-18

The favoured bait for surf fishing on the peninsula is squid, which is tough enough to stay affixed to hooks during long casts and enticing to the full variety of local fish species.

BACK TO NATURE The Bellarine Peninsula hosts a surprisingly diverse wealth of natural attractions, including some of Australia's rarest flora and fauna. Environmentally minded visitors can find plenty of interesting sites, ranging from remote coastal reserves through to wetlands enjoyed by wading birds from around the world. OCEAN GROVE NATURE RESERVE This woodland reserve is an oasis on Ocean Grove’s doorstep, with birdlife, echidnas, wallabies, lizards and more than 178 species of native plants. Go at dusk for your best chance of spotting a wallaby. Wildflowers, including lilies and orchids, bloom throughout the reserve in spring.

BIRD-WATCHING The Bellarine Peninsula is a hotspot for birdlife. Countless species thrive on and around the shores, and it is one of the few places in the country to see an endangered hooded plover. Birdlife Bellarine, a small group of local ornithological enthusiasts, holds birdwatching outings on the first Wednesday and third Sunday of each month. Local photographer Ian Smissen has spotted more than 172 species of birds on the peninsula, some endangered, according to his website.

WHALE-WATCHING During the annual humpback and southern right whale migration in winter, these majestic mammals can be seen anywhere along the southern shores of the peninsula. Many whales make an annual pilgrimage from their feeding grounds of Antarctica to give birth and raise their calves in Australia’s warmer waters. More than 60 per cent of the world’s whales live in Australian waters, where numbers have grown steadily over the past twenty years.

LAKE LORNE This natural freshwater wetland on the edge of Drysdale is home to many species of birds and native vegetation. The number and diversity of birds within the reserve make it one of the most significant wetlands on the Bellarine Peninsula. Black swans, egrets, spoonbills, purple swamp hens and rare and threatened species such as freckled ducks, blue-billed ducks and Latham’s snipes all visit the lake.

POINT RICHARDS FLORA AND FAUNA RESERVE The characteristic call of the rare growling grass frog is a common treat for visitors to this unique reserve. The small, camouflaged frog is actually quite comfortable around humans, although anyone encountering one up close should resist the urge of making contact. A wealth of birdlife and native costal vegetation adds further to the experience of visiting the reserve, where a picnic rotunda provides an ideal all-weather location for visiting groups.

EDWARDS POINT WILDLIFE RESERVE Edwards Point is like its own miniature peninsula, jutting out from St Leonards with Port Phillip and Swan Bays on either side. The reserve's intriguing mix of indigenous woodland, saltmarsh, and dune vegetation with sandy coastline presents natural habitat for a diverse range of native fauna, including the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot. In fact, the reserve's habitat is some of the last of its type remaining around Port Phillip Bay, make the reserve a must-visit destination.

ALL ABOARD Bellarine Peninsula has the right rails to get lovers of trains - miniature and full-size alike - huffing and puffing with excitement. For decades little locomotives have chugged up and down the tracks at Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway. A train departs Point Richards Station nearly every Sunday, winding through the picturesque parkland of Portarlington’s foreshore in the ocean breeze. And during school holidays the mini trains operate on Wednesdays too, weather-permitting, giving kids more chances to climb aboard. The magic and charm of the miniature railway has brought enjoyment and fun to families since its first public running day in January 1999.

The service is Geelong’s only 7.25 and 5 inch miniature railway and Australia’s only railway located on a foreshore. The railway has a station with an undercover platform for 70 guests, a vintage-style signal box, a kiosk, BBQs and a children’s adventure playground. Train-loving volunteers help keep the not-for-profit line running and the locomotives arriving on time, according to secretary Brian Coleman. “A big thanks to all volunteers who forgo their free time to help run the mini railway, they are priceless,” he says.

“They do it for the love of trains and serving the community.”

running to give locals and visitors a glimpse into yesteryear.

Those into larger locomotives and steam engines can journey back to the turn of the 20th Century just down the road at Queenscliff or Drysdale.

The railway pays tribute to the Queenscliff line, which opened on 21 May, 1879 and closed on 6 November, 1976.

Heritage trains depart from Queenscliff and Drysdale stations on most Sundays throughout the year, as well as on Tuesdays and Thursdays during school holidays. Volunteers are the lifeblood of this vintage railway too, driving trains, maintaining tracks, gardening and more. Since 1970 Geelong Steam Preservation Society has kept the trains

Younger train fans can have a day out with Thomas the Tank Engine or Santa on the railway’s kids’ rides during summer. Anyone 18 years and above can even drive a train, so long as they book in advance. More than 10,000 people a year enjoy the line’s musical Blues Train, which has been running since 1994. For more information phone Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway on 0476 124 598 or The Bellarine Railway on 5258 2069.

They say that when you cook with love, you provide food for the soul, which is why The Bungalow Restaurant in Drysdale thrives as an atmospheric and humble foodie destination for all.

12407404-CG50-18

The Bellarine Railway’s 11 steam engines and fleet of diesel trains, running between the two towns, date back as early as 1909.

Central to the Bellarine this charming 1932 Californian Bungalow home with its interesting history, has been lovingly restored and returned to its food-inspired roots. The Bungalow is a celebration of honest food, good company, and community spirit, so come and visit the staff, and see for yourself the dedication and passion that continues a legacy 70 years on.

WALK THIS WAY

LACE up your walking shoes, fill up your water bottle and pack your sunglasses. The Bellarine has some spectacular walks for the fitness fanatic or those just wanting a leisurely stroll. You don’t have to do the entire 35km of the Bellarine Rail Trail from Queenscliff to South Geelong, but the rail trail is particularly popular between Leopold and Clifton Springs. The scenery ranges from suburban to rolling farmlands and bay views. From Drysdale to Queenscliff the trail runs beside the Bellarine Railway. The tourist railway is happy to take bicycles on their trains if you don’t want to walk the whole way. Walking tracks abound in Ocean Grove Nature Reserve. This haven of a reserve, with a soon to be built all-abilities track, contains the only significant remnant of native woodland on the Bellarine Peninsula. Why not put your jogging shoes on for a faster heart rate? Everyone loves long walks on the beach, right? Gaze at the spectacular Southern Ocean on one of the great beach walks from Ocean Grove to Point Lonsdale or vice-versa. It’s an 8km hike each way. Be rewarded with incredible vistas at the top of the Bluff when you undertake this walk from the car park near Barwon Heads bridge and complete the circuit up to the top of this grand old limestone sand Aeolian calcarenite. An easy stroll from the top of River Parade in Barwon Heads leads to a part-boardwalk, partgravel track and past fishing platforms and mangroves to the open space of Moonah Park. Head to Blue Waters Lake or Begola Wetlands, two major inland water features in Ocean Grove, and find walking trails that pass through a wetland environment teeming with busy birdlife. Head to Point Lonsdale and do the seawall walk to Queenscliff.

CATCH A BREAK

(Picture: Justin Flynn)

The Bellarine Peninsula is home to a variety of surf breaks suitable for all standards, from beginners through to professionals. As long as the wind’s anywhere from the north-east to north-west, ideal conditions can be found anywhere along the ocean-facing side of the peninsula. BLACK ROCK The action begins at the very western extremity of the peninsula, where Black Rock provides an excellent right-hand point break in the right conditions. Access is via the first small parking areas on either side of 13th Beach Rd, about 400 metres east of the wind turbine at the road’s western end. Black Rock works best on lower tides and north to north-west winds. Reforms on the beach at the inside of the point offer excellent opportunities for beginners. 13TH BEACH The long, sandy beach running east from Black Rock toward Barwon Heads offers numerous opportunities to catch a wave. North and north-east winds suit 13th, with the best waves usually found in the second half of the beach toward Barwon Heads. The beach’s south-west-facing orientation faces the predominant swell direction in Victoria, so 13th’s rarely flat. On the other hand, it doesn’t handle a lot of size, either, so it’s usually best in swells up to 1.5m. Access is via several car parks along the beach.

THE BEACON Between the eastern end of 13th Beach and Barwon Heads Bluff is The Beacon, which can offer-world class waves on its day. Charelmont Reef offshore tends to break up the swell as it marches in toward The Beacon, creating a variety of sometimes-shifty peaks that create opportunities to catch waves even on the busiest days. Breaking on a variety of sand and rock, and best at low tide, The Beacon can produce outstanding barrelling waves. It’s a favourite haunt of visiting professionals and has hosted rounds of the Rip Curl Pro when conditions have been unsuitable at the event’s traditional Bells Beach site. Left and right-breaking waves are available along the length of The Beacon, with ample parking available. OCEAN GROVE This long, sweeping beach offers numerous opportunities for beginners and intermediate surfers to find a wave away from the crowd. Best wind directions range from the north-west to north-east, with low tides generally best. At the western end, toward the mouth of the Barwon River, RAAFS works well on a moderate swell and can even handle winds a little more from the west. Numerous left and right breaks are dotted along this beach, with the swell generally larger at the eastern end. Plenty of parking’s available, although it’s best to be early on sunny days when locals and visitors flock to this beach. POINT LONSDALE BACK BEACH The power turns on again at Point Lonsdale, where experienced surfers can find some challenging waves. North and north-east winds are best, along with a high tide. The beach area near the lighthouse offers left and right-breaking waves, often with barrelling conditions. Just to the west, a right-hand reef break also presents hollow conditions for surfers of a high standard. Access is to park in the vicinity of the surf lifesaving club, then take the short walk over the dunes. POINT LONSDALE FRONT BEACH The waves at the front beach area actually inside Port Phillip Bay after travelling through The Rip. A large swell is generally required to present worthwhile waves, with this area the only place on the peninsula still working well in winds from the west and even south-west. The waves are mostly right-handers and weak, so they're best-suited to longboards. Access is simple: pull up in the main shopping area and walk across the foreshore to the water.

LIFE'S A BEACH

Arrive early for a car park at 13th Beach, and we mean early! The best stretches of sand are near the surf lifesaving club and it’s patrolled in summer. Indented Head is nice and safe for families with usually calm conditions. Ocean Grove Main Beach gets crazy busy in summer, but at other times of the year you can walk along the sand in relative peace. Of course, many holidaymakers enjoy the busy beach, especially teens and young adults, who use it as a meeting place for a fun day out with friends. Away from peak summer season and long weekends, the cooler weather is a terrific opportunity to rug up and enjoy a long walk along the shoreline. On cold days, you will likely have the place to yourself. The solitude and hearing the waves crash against the sand and rocks is a different perspective of this beautiful part of the world.

In peak season, you’ll find the Bellarine Peninsula’s beaches packed with families and teenagers on their summer break. Three beaches are patrolled by surf lifesaving volunteers: Ocean Grove Main Beach, 13th Beach in Barwon Heads and Point Lonsdale. These beaches are patrolled from the first day of December right through until after the Australia Day weekend. Away from the surf on the bay side of the peninsula, Clifton Springs, Portarlington, Indented Head, St Leonards and Queenscliff all have sheltered beaches. The beach next to the bridge in Barwon Heads is perfect for kids. It’s a shallow beach at the mouth of the river with no surf. There’s a great playground there and toilet and barbecue facilities. At high tide, there’s not much space on the sand, so check the tide tables online beforehand.

ON THOSE RAINY DAYS

Walk back in time at National Wool Museum

Get lost in art at Geelong Gallery

Ride the horses at Geelong Carousel

Along Geelong’s vibrant waterfront precinct, an iconic 1872 bluestone woolstore beckons you into an Australian cultural treasure.

Geelong Gallery is one of Australia’s leading and oldest regional art galleries.

Featuring 36 horses, two chariots and disability access, Geelong’s 126-year-old carousel is one of only 200 of its type in operation around the world.

National Wool Museum tells the timeless Australian story of wool, fibre and textiles, alongside a range of contemporary exhibitions, public programs and special events. The museum’s displays are always changing, with art exhibitions, workshops, photos from international competitions and more.

Since its establishment in 1896, the gallery has amassed a magnificent collection of 19th and 20th century Australian and European paintings. The gallery hosts several touring exhibitions during the year, including the prestigious and often controversial Archibald Prize.

The Carousel was manufactured in 1892 by the Armitage-Herschell company in New York before Geelong’s council purchased it in the mid-90s. The carousel opened to the public following a painstaking restoration in 1996.

More than a million people have visited the museum since Queen Elizabeth II opened it in 1988.

Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly series and an exhibition celebrating the 1960s space race to the moon feature in the gallery’s 2019 highlights.

And the carousel is just across the road from plenty of cafes and Geelong’s picturesque waterfront, for when the weather clears up.

Located at 26 Moorabool St, Geelong.

Located at 55 Little Malop St, Geelong.

TOURING HISTORY Steeped in historical splendour, the Bellarine Peninsula has historical ties that date back to the mid-19th century. Fort Queenscliff dates back to 1860 when an open battery was constructed on Shortland’s Bluff to defend the entrance to Port Phillip. The orders for the first Allied shots from WWI came from Fort Queenscliff. It occupies an area of 6.7 hectares on high ground known as Shortland’s Bluff. It’s now a popular museum and tourist haunt. The Bellarine Railway operates on a 16km stretch between Queenscliff and Drysdale. The original line opened in 1872 and connected Queenscliff with South Geelong. For several decades it carried passengers, goods and military traffic before eventually closing in 1976. It now operates as a popular tourist service.

Bellarine Railway (Rebecca Hosking)

Escaped convict William Buckley hid at a small cave at Point Lonsdale lighthouse for years. Buckley escaped at Sorrento in 1803 and walked all the way to the Bellarine Peninsula where he befriended the Wathaurong people and lived in a cave at Point Lonsdale Lighthouse for more than 30 years. Point Lonsdale Lighthouse is one of the few lighthouses left that is manned 24/7. This grand old girl dates back to 1902 and the entire precinct is of significant architectural importance. Tours are held on Sundays

Queenscliff (Rebecca Hosking)

The Rip is among the top 10 most dangerous navigable passages in the world. The Rip connects Bass Strait with Port Phillip Bay and is the only entrance for ships into Melbourne. Several hundred lives have been lost in this treacherous stretch of water and since 1840 has claimed 30 ships and severely damaged many others. Queenscliff is a hotspot for those on a search for architectural history.

Your builder. Your neighbour.

Point Lonsdale Lighthouse (Rebecca Hosking)

The town has plenty of heritage-listed buildings from stately Victorian homes, majestic hotels, quaint shops and beautiful churches. Guided walks are held every Saturday from 2pm and go for about 75 minutes. Alternatively, do a self-guided 45-minute walk with the aid of the booklet ‘Queenscliff - A Living Heritage’. See the visitor centre for more information.
