There's plenty of fight in Dandenong's worldclass kickboxer Rahullah Sarwari. The 17-year-old Afghan-born fighter has withstood notable challenges in his life with admirable determination. He is a worthy role-model and recipient of the Journal's Person of the Year 2018. As recently featured in Star News, Rahullah had been denied from representing Australia in Kung Fu world titles due to a citizenship row. Despite his best efforts and fistfuls of national medals, the permanent visa-holder was not granted citizenship prior to the 2017 championships. So he reinvented his martial-arts career and took up kick-boxing. Amazingly, on the back of just four prior fights, Rahullah placed third in his age division at WAKO kickboxing world titles in Venice, Italy in September. He says his first opponent was difficult - a daunting, strong and speedy Russian who was quick to seize on Rahullah's weaknesses. But he adjusted quickly, progressing his way to the semi-finals. Prior to departure for the titles, there were still citizenship dramas. He'd only received visa clearance the day before he flew out from Australia. The trip's $5000 cost was also a scramble. But with the help of Dandenong High schoolmates and staff - and a crowdfunding campaign - the costs were covered. The way it all came together was "like a movie", he said. Businesses look to 2019 For the first Grow Casey Cardinia of the new year we catch up with some of the entrepreneurs profiled in 2018 for an update on their business journey.

I basically stopped marketing to schools and started marketing directly to parents through Facebook. I started booking out venues in Warragul, Traralgon, Wonthaggi, Casey and the Northern suburbs and I also went to Queensland and Perth doing these events motovating boys. Basically, I book the venue, I set up an advertising campagin on Facebook, parents book and turn up on the night with their boys. I had 273 people at the largest one. In January I am doing a tour from Melton to Canberra. I changed what I was doing because it was almost impossible to get through to the right people in schools. This way I get to speak directly to boys and their families. I am on the road a lot now. I have a team of people that come with me to my events to help me run them. I want to get to the point where my events are being held in every state in Australia. The most exciting thing about 2019 will be the launch of my new business, Savage Angels, which is Motov8 for girls. The slogan behind the business is that not all girls want to have fun. I want to empower girls to make choices independent of their femaninity. It’s about inspiring them to make choices about what they want out of life. I’ll get brand ambassadors on board and I won’t deliver the seminars but I’ll get an equally passionate the energetic person to do that for me.

The muesli business had to take a back seat to the grazing boards, which just took off. I had people asking me about orders for next year. Unfortunately, I was running my businesses out of my mum’s kitchen and we would have had to install a second sink to meet health regulations. It was a very difficult decision, but in the end it wasn’t worth the investment or the headache. With the muesli the volume I had to produce to make it profitable was beyond what I could do on my own. I have now joined forces with Clive Canal helping him with his business, Whozcookn. Clive needed admin assistance and he knew I have a real passion for food and for social enterprise. We met and got talking when we both co-worked at the Waterman Business Centre. I have reached out to a few celebrity chefs and I hope to be interviewing Maggie Beer in January for the Whozcookn website. My goal is to pursue a career in food writing. I would love to do a Bachelor of Arts in writing and write for magazines.

$1.4m damages for play centre fall By Cam Lucadou-Wells A visiting parent at a Hallam playcentre has been awarded more than $1.4 million in damages after he fell more than three metres from play equipment onto a concrete floor. Abdul Qayom, 39, of Hallam, suffered career-ending spinal damage when a raised platform gave way under his feet at Xanadu Playcentre on 23 November 2014, the Victorian County Court heard. The Afghan-born refugee had been attempting to save his then five-year-old daughter who was stuck in the multi-level play equipment featuring slides, tunnels and a padded stairway. Qayom was taken by ambulance to a hospital emergency department, in extreme pain and short of breath, Judge Jeanette Morrish stated. She was satisfied that a girl had fallen from the same platform the day before the fall.
"It is inherently unlikely that if concocting his account he would happen to strike upon a story about a girl falling from the equipment the day before when, by mere coincidence, a girl did actually fall from the equipment the day before." Qayom was found to have suffered permanent physical and mental injuries including spinal damage in three places and soft-tissue damage in his shoulder. He'd lost the capacity to work, and required life-long treatment and medication, he argued. Xanadu's then-owner Kylamanda Investments admitted liability for negligence but claimed Qayom exaggerated his injuries at a hearing at the Victorian County Court in September and October 2018. Judge Morrish found on the balance of probabilities that Qayom was a credible witness. He continued to be wracked by back and shoulder pain that radiated into his neck,
chest, head and legs. He could sit down for no longer than 25 minutes at a time, Judge Morrish noted. The once socially-active man had worked long hours as a robot technician. He was now depressed and unable to resume his former work. He spent most of his time resting at home and only occasionally socialised. The fall had caused him to suffer a loss of enjoyment of life, his earning capacity was destroyed and he'd incur medical expenses most likely for the rest of his life, Judge Morrish found. Qayom's prognosis was "poor" - "no sign of improvement has yet occurred," she stated. She awarded Qayom $1.37 million damages including pain and suffering, past and future lost earnings and medical costs. In a further hearing in December, Judge Morrish awarded him about $150,000 in legal costs.

Police have released CCTV of an alleged petrol drive-off at a Doveton service station. A driver reportedly fuelled up a red Holden Commodore as well as filling two large jerry cans with petrol at the Princes Highway business about 11.10am on Saturday 5 January. He drove away, with another male on board, without attempting to pay, Endeavour Hills Police say. The CCTV stills feature a man that police believe can assist their investigation. Police are seeking two unknown Good Samaritans, who have come to the aid of a street robbery victim in Springvale. A 23-year-old Noble Park man had been beset by two males at a Clarke Street bus stop about 2pm on Wednesday 2 January. After asking the victim for the time, the robbers took the man's phone during a short struggle. He was punched in the head after he refused to reveal the phone's password. He then fled from his attackers. Two witnesses soon retrieved the phone by unknown means and returned it to the victim nearby. The robbers were described as African in appearance. Like many of its riders, the sport of skateboarding is about to go into orbit. Especially with the sport about to make its debut at the Tokyo Olympics next year, says pro champion Renton Millar. Not that it's short of participants at the moment, he says as he looks at the regular teeming mass of riders at Noble Park Skate Park. Mr Millar, with City of Greater Dandenong, is staging the King of Concrete tournament at the park's deep concrete bowls on 19 January. He has been holding these national-level events across "Australia's best skate parks" over several years. King of Concrete is a platform for talented kids to express themselves, as well as creating positive skate-park culture, he says. "The cool thing about Noble Park is that some of the best in Australia are the local kids," Mr Millar says. One of the "rad" locals is 22-year-old Louis Durand, who effortlessly pulls airs for the cameras. Though one of the favourites to reign as King of Concrete, Mr Durand says he's focused more on his own performance than his competitors. "It's like skating with all your friends, which makes it a bit less nerve-wracking." The event is an opportunity to gain wildcards into the pro tournaments. It gives local kids' opening to exposure and sponsors, Mr Durand says. "It's harder in Australia to make it, so most people go overseas.
A man has fled on foot after ploughing a Jeep into the back of another vehicle at speed on the South Gippsland Highway, Dandenong South. A 53-year-old Cranbourne North man was nursing a sore neck and shock after his white Ford Falcon ute was struck while driving northbound just after 6.30am on Monday 7 January. The crash occurred in the 70 km/h highway section between Dandenong Bypass and Greens Road. The Jeep Grand Cherokee's driver jumped out of the vehicle, checked if the victim was OK and then ran away. Both cars were significantly damaged, with airbags in the Jeep activated, Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis of Greater Dandenong CIU said. The Jeep driver, described as aged in his mid twenties, wearing a hoodie and with dark hair, was unable to be found by police. His vehicle was registered with a business, Det Sen Const Jarvis said. MPs lament ‘micro’ losses By Cam Lucadou-Wells Liberal stalwart Inga Peulich has bemoaned the rise of micro parties, which defeated her in the State Election in November. Ms Peulich was tipped out of the last seat in the South Eastern Metropolitan Region by the Liberal Democrat's David Limbrick - whose party attracted just 0.84 per cent of the vote. She said micro parties - each with less than 2 per cent of primaries - made up 25 per cent of the Upper House. It made "our democracy less stable, less accountable and less transparent", Ms Peulich said. Despite its 'Dan-slide', Labor has won 18 seats - short of a majority in an increasingly eclectic 40-member Upper House. To pass laws, it will rely on other parties including Liberals (10), Derryn Hinch's Justice Party (3) and Liberal Democrats (2). There is also a representative from each of the Nationals, Greens, Shooters, Fishers and

doms including religion, helping the less fortunate and responsible and transparent government. "The challenge for our future Parliaments is to find agreement on how to protect the rights and freedoms of individuals without unduly infringing upon the rights of others. "Having been born under a communist regime, protecting the interests of those without a voice and those who are not politically organised has been a priority for me in every decision I have taken as a parliamentarian, even though it may not have been a popular position." Defeated Greens MP Nina Springle also spoke out against the collective weight of a plethora of micro parties. Ms Springle - who won 5 per cent of the primary vote - called for electoral reform to curb the "incredibly undemocratic" practice. "It's almost a form of corruption." She was disappointed that no women were elected in the South East Metro region, as well
as the election of the right-wing Liberal Democrats. "While Inga and I didn't always agree with each other, she would have been a representative for women in the South East." The Greens retained just one of their five Upper House seats - a "disappointing" result part due to the surge in support to Labor. Ms Springle said the Greens also needed to "call out" the staffers and candidates, whose sexist comments created uproar during the campaign. "We're not immune to some of the issues coming to the fore - sexism and men behaving badly exists in all realms of society at this stage. "We're working towards a better response when this stuff comes out." Though feeling there was "unfinished business", Ms Springle was proud of her work on plastic bag pollution, her role in the 'ALP red shirts' enquiry and being a "progressive voice for progressive women".
Unplugged: NBN delay puts internet business on hold By Cam Lucadou-Wells Despite two recent visits from NBN Co, a highspeed internet connection remains elusive for Springvale businessman Nick Chiselett. After being promised NBN by last September, Mr Chiselett has endured frustrating delays for access that's available to his next-door neighbor in Garnsworthy Street. Saddled with sluggish ADSL 2+ internet, his software development business 2 Bytes has been losing $100,000 in business a month, he says. Bewilderingly, the network is available for 10 shops at the commercial/retail strip but 10 can't get connected.
He has thought of literally punching a hole in the wall and offering to pay for the neighbouring social club's NBN connection. In the meantime, three different teams of NBN contractors have inspected the site. After Star News made enquiries, NBN Co paid a visit that week in December. Initially it planned for heavy concrete cutting to hook up 2 Bytes. Mr Chiselett had expected this work to proceed on 8 January. But on that visit, the plan changed to installing an aerial lead-in cable. The contractor however didn't have access to a bucket truck to carry out the work. NBN spokesperson Russell Kelly said the
aerial cable would cause the "least amount of disruption" "A bucket truck is required to successfully complete the connection and a field supervisor attended the site today to plan the work which is due to be carried out early next week, weather permitting. "NBN Co apologises for the delay." Nearly all of Springvale is ready to connect to NBN, but a small percentage of properties required "additional work to connect", Mr Kelly said. 9 January 1969 Beating the fare rise The proposed new rail fare rises to come into effect on January 26 will cost Dandenong commuters about $31,000 per year. About 38000 single and return tickets are sold each month, about 4500 weekly tickets. Single fares from Dandenong to Melbourne will rise from 71cents to 75cents: and a weekly ticket from $2.90 to $3.15. How does one beat the price rise? The Journal tried to find out yesterday but came up with only one answer. It's still cheaper to travel by train. For instance, if five daily commuters from Dandenong to Melbourne shared a taxi, it would cost about $10 a day return ($3 per head) and would take between 40- and 60 minutes to go to and from work. Assuming you took your own car - and forget about road
On January 12 a pleasant Sunday afternoon was spent at the residence of Mr & Mrs W A Gibson at Dandenong when a couple of hundred employees of 'Amalgamated Pictures' made the trip from Melbourne. The weather conditions were ideal. A spacious marquee was erected in the grounds where dinner was served and later afternoon tea at 6'O'Clock. During the day an extensive sports programme was decided with valuable trophies given out. The "Picture People" were enthusiastic in their praises for Mr & Mrs Gibson. The visitors departed for the city with pleasant impressions of their trip to "Oakwood Park" and Dandenong.

Rosewood Tennis Club's Chris Miranda of North Dandenong, has been a regular part of the Australian Open for the last three tournaments as one of the Open's unobtrusive yet highly visible 'ball kids'. This will be Miranda's last year as all ball kids must retire at 15. "I wouldn't mind getting a final this year" said Miranda.

Bad drivers nabbed in holiday blitz By Cam Lucadou-Wells Serious road injuries were down in the South East during the recent Christmas-New Year traffic enforcement blitz. Across the statewide Operation Roadwise, nearly 34,000 traffic offences were detected over 24 days from 14 December to 6 January. It equated to nearly an offence a minute. Senior Sergeant Clint Wilson, who oversees Southern Metropolitan's highway patrol units, said 16 people were seriously injured on roads in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia during the period. Pleasingly, this was down from 25 in the same period 12 months earlier. He said the massive numbers of police on the road played a part. Statewide, nearly 18,000 police shifts were undertaken. During the operation, 42 drink-drivers, 10 drug-drivers and 61 unauthorised drivers were detected in Greater Dandenong. Each of them was statistically more likely to be involved in a serious crash, Sen Sgt Wilson said. "We were actively removing the worst drivers off the road." Of the road casualties, the main contributing factors were speeding, alcohol, drugs and fatigue.
"As a whole, drivers and road users are considerate and are taking care over the holiday period. "But we still have a core group of drivers that don't care." He said Highway Patrol police were proud of the dropping road toll, which hit a record low 214 in Victoria last year. "No one likes giving out tickets. Each of them have a passion to reduce road trauma." Across the state, Operation Roadwise netted 12,000-plus speeding offences - with a surge in drivers surpassing the limit by 10km/h and more. There were also 452 vehicle impounds, as well as 2492 unregistered vehicles and 2282 unauthorised drivers detected. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said the high number of people engaging in behaviours that posed a risk to themselves and others was concerning. He pointed to large numbers of drivers using mobile phones and drugs, without seatbelts and disobeying road signs. "I encourage everyone who's using our roads to think carefully about what they can do to keep themselves and others safe."

Crime rate trends down By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong's crime rate has continued to dip toward its lowest levels for four years, according to official statistics. During the year ending September 2018, the area's crime rate dropped 6 per cent. The Crime Statistics Agency figures recorded significant drops in the rate of assaults (down 12 per cent), sexual offences (23 per cent) and crimes against the person (13 per cent). The rates of robbery (4 per cent), burglary (11
per cent), theft (4 per cent), weapon (17 per cent) and drug offences (3 per cent) were also down. Across Victoria, it was the seventh consecutive quarterly audit that reported a crime rate drop. In Greater Dandenong, the crime rate is at its lowest since September 2014. Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said toughened bail laws, introduced in June 2018, was having a "significant impact".
Internal police stats showed a 49 per cent increase in remands as a result, he said. "It allows us to get those people off the street who are serial repeat offenders." Mr Patton noted an increase in recorded breaches of family violence orders and bail orders. It showed police were responding quicker to breaches, he said. In raw numbers, there were 1685 recorded assaults in Greater Dandenong during the 12-month period. That's equivalent to more than 30 a week.
In the same period, there were 1424 burglaries and break-ins and 5631 thefts (more than 100 a week). Police Minister Lisa Neville said the "record investment" in Victoria Police was "making a real difference but we know there's more to do". "We're turning around a six-year trend as crime rates continue to drop in Victoria by delivering 3135 new police officers and new laws to keep the community safe."
Blues buddies take on the world with ‘heavenly’ sound By Cam Lucadou-Wells There's a powerful synergy between prolific singer-writers Andrea Marr and John McNamara. When they brought their soulful voices together, it was like a blues 'match in heaven'. Such is their magic, their act The McnaMarr Project was only early in its inception when it won its way to the world's biggest blues competitions, the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, USA . The pair were still writing their songs while waiting backstage during qualifying. They are one of seven Australian bands invited to the challenge on 22-26 January. "I was gobsmacked (to win qualifying)," Ms Marr, of Springvale, said. "We were very undercooked. I thought it must prove we're supposed to be together." The pair had joined forces only seven months ago at the behest of their publicist, who described them as the "male and female of each other". Separately both have written chart-stopping blues hits in the US and Australia.
Andrea Marr and John McNamara are poised to bring their blues power to Memphis. "We got feedback from the whole blues community that we're perfect for each other. "Since I've been singing, I've never blended
with another voice like with John. "We write in the same keys, with the same feels."
Growing up in Sri Lanka, her parents were steeped in music - her father as a singer and bass guitarist, her mother singing in church choirs. Ms Marr has been on stage since she was three years old. But she wasn't exposed to blues to much later on. "Then I realised the DNA of the music was so me. "That was exactly what I had been doing." For the past 25 years, she has run the Andrea Marr Music School in Springvale. She is proud that one of her school's proteges Charlie Bedford has been invited to the Memphis event's youth showcase. At the Challenge, 250 blues acts will be battling for supremacy as well as jamming together every night. Before the event, Ms Marr is teaming up with blueswomen from around the world for a blockbuster show. "It's incredible. It's a big honour - it's the best of the world in one place. "It's just magic for a musician."

Armed police swoop on theft suspect A 30-year-old Cranbourne North man has been arrested following an ongoing investigation into a number of incidents which occurred late last year. Detectives from the Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit and officers from the Special Operations Group attended a house at Cottage Court, Hampton Park on Monday 8 January where the man attempted to flee from police and resist arrest. He was arrested by police with the assistance of a police dog. He sustained injuries and was transported to hospital under police guard. Following his arrest police executed search warrants at houses in Cranbourne North and Doveton where four stolen motorcycles were located along with other allegedly stolen property. The alleged incidents occurred between October and December last year across Melbourne's south eastern suburbs and Ballarat. The arrest relates to the following alleged incidents: An aggravated burglary which occurred at Richards Street, Ballarat East on 16 October. The theft of a Jeep Grand Cherokee from the Kilsyth Football Oval on 25 November. The theft of petrol which occurred at a service station on Cranbourne-Frankston Road, Langwarrin on 25 November.

Everyone valued in artwork By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne North secondary school student’s bright artwork where “everyone counts” will become a visible image on the roads. Alkira Secondary College Year 9 student Laura Marzec won first place in this year’s Wallara ‘Picture This’ art competition in August, and will appear on a Wallara Australia bus. Wallara, a Dandenong-based disability support service for adults in the South-East, invited secondary students to get creative and produce artwork under the theme ‘social inclusion for people with different abilities.’ Laura said her artwork depicted a world globe with people raising and holding their hands, with “everyone feeling valued, important and happy.”
“In the design, the houses are close together and look similar, this promotes our society having equal opportunities for everyone,” she said. “The colours I used in this design I think are eye catching, bright, happy and I wanted this drawing to have contrast.“ Laura’s entry wowed a panel of eight judges from Wallara which also earned her a cheque for $250. The competition is held annually at two South-East schools to inspire students to depict social inclusion. This year, Hallam Senior College and Alkira Secondary College were the chosen schools.

Controversy on sport bids By Cam Lucadou-Wells Maybe it was fate that decisions on Team 11 and Maurice Kirby Velodrome landed within days. Both issues attracted plenty of news-copy in Greater Dandenong in 2018 - each with the key ingredients of sport, politics, grass-roots campaigning and torrents of raw passion. There was such brimming confidence in Team 11 bid's for a licence in Australia's highest soccer league. The high levels of soccer participation, the social and economic boons, the promise of the region's first national team of any football code, a multi-purpose stadium near Dandenong station - the case seemed irresistible. In the days before the announcement, Greater Dandenong Council endorsed putting in more than $1 million as a shareholder of the franchise. But then on 13 December came the bombshell announcement. Football Federation Australia went a different way. Just days earlier, Greater Dandenong Council picked its own winners and losers by opting to demolish Maurice Kirby Velodrome. It backed the needs of a soccer club, cricket club and tennis club at the velodrome's home at Parkfield Reserve, Noble Park. The plan would allow for the clubs to enjoy extended playing fields and a modern shared pavilion. But at the same time, it crushed the dreams of cyclists who mounted a vociferous public campaign to save the track. Do both Team 11 and cyclists' dreams end here? Well, cyclists say the fight is not over - especially while there are no plans to demolish the
A concept plan of Team 11's home stadium. track until July at the earliest. The Noble Park-Dandenong Cycling Club has been reformed, with the blessing of peak body Cycling Victoria. Cyclists continue to roll around the tired, neglected cycling track named after prominent sports broadcaster and cycling identity Maurice Kirby. "The club will continue. I hope the club will go from strength to strength," spokesperson Boyd Fraser said. Meanwhile, the council is locked into inves-
tigating a regional velodrome in its stead. Team 11 stated that "it's not the end of the story, just another chapter in the book". "You cannot fake the passion and enthusiasm that exists among our community for this bid," it stated soon after its bid was lost. "Today's outcome, while disappointing, does not shake our belief that a football team in the south-east of Victoria will be an immense success. "We live it every day, we breathe it, we see it, we know it."

Show has it all The Lang Lang Show is on again this year on Saturday 19 January 2019. The show will once again feature a full program of horse events including riding, Shetland, Clydesdales, miniature ponies and stockhorse sections - just to name a few! Pre-entry for all horse events is required (except for the fun ring). Once again, all showjumping events will be held at the Lang Lang Showgrounds the week before on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 January. The Beef Cattle Spectacular will also return and is always a great success and well worth a look. Additionally, there is a poultry competition and the dog show is always well attended with many breeds competing for the title of show champion. The Sheep Stud Show section is new to the program this year with the committee expecting up to 100 entries. There will also be a miniature goat display with many local breeders bringing along their cutest companions. The pavilion will once again be filled with art, photography, craft, cookery and produce. While the Lang Lang Men's Shed will be running the fresh veggie stall, the Bubble Muffin Kids Cooking Club will be running four entertaining shows throughout the day for children aged between five and 11 years. This free activity educates children about eating in a fun and healthy way. There will also be an animal nursery, a free art activity, showbags and assorted rides to keep kids entertained. One lucky boy or girl will even win a BMX bike and helmet in the lucky gate prize. Every child will get a free ticket, but they must be present at the draw at 2pm to collect the prize. Judging starts at 9am and goes until 3pm. The show is held at the Lang Lang Showgrounds on Westernport Road in Lang Lang. Students from across Casey have been recognised for their leadership efforts. Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne presented the 2018 Holt Community Spirit and Leadership Awards on Monday 17 December. Last year marked the 17th anniversary since the awards were initiated and acknowledged students who actively contribute to their school and their wider community. Thirty-one students from 29 local schools were recognised at the awards ceremony held at the Cranbourne Community Theatre. The Awards ceremony was attended by over 150 people including award recipients, parents, teachers and family members. "It is important that we as a community celebrate the wonderful achievements and outstanding contributions made by the students in their schools and the wider community," said Mr Byrne. "We heard inspiring stories of students who have embodied community spirit and demonstrated maturity beyond their years. We heard about students who organised fundraisers for local charities, represented their schools in sporting competitions, participated in various ceremonies as well as represented their schools as ambassadors in the local community," he said. In particular, one student organised a 'PJ Day', where students were encouraged to wear their pyjamas to school if they donated a gold coin, or otherwise donated a new pair of pyjamas for children in need. The student not only helped raise $395, but also 105 pairs of new pyjamas were given to a local charity. "It was a great honour to present these awards. I am extremely proud of our young people, and I know that our future will be in safe in their hands with such inspiring stories.' Mr Byrne said. All award recipients received a framed certificate and a Village Cinemas voucher.

Slotting in at nine only due to the quality of the players above him in the batting order, Hammond has once again been one of the dominant all-rounders in Turf 1, and has been remarkably consistent - particularly with the bat. Bowls sharp with the new ball, and is a vital component if they are to push for a flag. Malinga Bandara (Springvale South) - 131 runs at 26.2, HS 52, 19 wickets at 16.1, BB 6/104. The dominant spinner of the competition, Bandara was stellar with the ball for the Bloods in the first half of the year, bowling plenty of overs and taking plenty of wickets. Useful with the bat too, as shown by a gritty 52 against Hallam earlier in the season. Isaiah Jassal (Berwick) - 5 runs at 2.5, HS 3*, 14 wickets at 17.07, BB 4/31. An incredible rise in senior cricket, the 14-year-old left arm spinner has been remarkable for the Bears as its leading wicket-taker to date after making his first XI debut earlier in the season. Spins the ball, has great control, and is a handy batsman, the Bears have an absolute beauty in the young man certain to attract interest at Premier level. 12th man: Jurgen Andersen (Buckley Ridges). Despite a serious injury restricting him to just five matches early in the season, Andersen was the most dominant seamer in the competition up until that point, and is still comfortably around the mark for most wickets taken with 12 next to his name. As the Turf 1 season heats up as we enter the second half of the season, DDCA reporter NICK CREELY has selected his Team of the Year at the midway point of the year. The side is as follows: Nathan Pilon (Berwick, keeper) - 460 runs at 57.5, Highest score 176. The former State cricketer is still playing sublime cricket in the DDCA, with the 42-year-old off to a blistering start to the year at the top of the order for the Bears, with two centuries and a fifty before Christmas. Still taking the gloves, where he is always tidy. Brendan Morris (Mordialloc) - 239 runs at 59.75, HS 95. Picking up where he left off from a promising 2017/18 season, the Bloodhounds opener has continued to build into a top-line Turf 1 batsman, and has fallen short of centuries after scores of 95 and 89 so far this season. A really important player as the reigning premiers look to get their season back on track in the second half of the season. Daniel Watson (Buckley Ridges, captain) 310 runs at 44.29, HS 82, 12 wickets at 19.33, BB 3/15. As powerful with the ball as he is when batting in the top-order for the Bucks, DJ Watson while not as prolific as the last few years - is still playing brilliant cricket, and has been instrumental for the powerhouse club in maintaining its high standards despite some untimely injuries. Steven Spoljaric (Springvale South) - 426 runs at 71, HS 122, 3 wickets at 44, BB 3/4. As it stands, the DDCA and Victorian Premier Cricket champ could be heading for an astonishing sixth Wookey Medal, with his stunning form with the bat at the age of 41 something to marvel at. With bowling taking somewhat of a back seat due to an injury, Spoljaric has blasted two centuries and three half-centuries from just seven digs. Enough said. Akshay Ballal (North Dandenong) - 348 runs at 43.5, HS 110, 16 wickets at 15.56, BB 5/14. One of the surprise packets of the competition, Ballal has been nothing short of outstanding in his debut DDCA season, with the Maroons import putting in many match winning performances to keep his side in the finals hunt. Is only going to get better as batting gets easier after Christmas. Ruwantha Kellepotha (St Mary's) - 368 runs at 61.33, HS 76, 25 wickets at 11.92, BB 5/31. While unbelievably consistent with the bat, Kellepotha and his spin has truly taken Turf 1 by storm, with the Saints all-rounder proving difficult to put away - particularly at the spinfriendly Carroll Reserve. His unbeaten 73 and 5/31 against Hallam proves his worth. Matthew Chasemore (Berwick) - 245 runs at 40.83, BB 61*, 12 wickets at 18.58, BB 4/52. The new Bears skipper and Wookey winner possesses as much experience as anyone in Victoria, and has enjoyed a fruitful season to date as he leads a side glittered with talent but struggling for consistency.
