What is something people don't know about you? I've done volunteer work throughout different organisations for the last 33 years. I started when I was 11 years old. I can also speak Slovenian. It's priceless seeing people's faces when they have never heard me speak another language. What was your most memorable moment? When both my children were born but also when I've helped two people when I was with St John Ambulance and receiving two thank you cards from both families. One was a newborn that had febrile convolutions and had turned blue on the lips and face and the other from parents of a teenage girl that almost died and almost got brain damage from drinking loads of spirits. Where did you grow up as a child? I was born in Whyalla, South Australia; where the outback meets the sea. What is your favourite movie? Shawshank Redemption, Enemy at the Gates and The Power of One. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? If I was PM for the day I would award my partner Michelle Oakley Mother of the Year because she has always gone above and beyond and looking after the whole family and taking our three year old son Lucas for his regular chemo treatment. Also the parents Pam and Andrew Oakley and my mum Josephine Schafer for the Grandparents of the Year award for helping myself and Michelle out when Lucas has gone in for treatment. At school I...... Enjoyed my sports, woodworking and also cooking. So just before Year 11 was due to finish I left school to start my apprenticeship as a chef. Where is your favourite holiday destination? My favourite holiday destination would be Slo-

Manny Pacquiao. What's your favourite book? Dogs of War. Best concert you have been to?

THREE … back to school tips for parents

1

Get a school routine going early. Summertime schedules are often different than school year schedules, and there's nothing wrong with that. Children do well with routines though, so establishing a school routine early is important. A week before school starts get the children used to waking up at a certain time every day and going to bed at a reasonable time.

2

Prepare for back to school emotions. Sometimes young children deal with separation anxiety when back to school time rolls around and those feelings are normal. Consider reading up on separation anxiety and how to ease it. Most importantly, you know your child best and you know how to address their concerns.

3

Get appropriate supplies and gear for your children. Your child's school will likely have a list, so be sure to refer to that. Many schools also have small lists of items to not bring to school. It will help the teachers and students if those lists are adhered to.

Police set sights on reckless behaviour Casey and Cardinia Highway Patrol teamed up for a traffic operation targeting drink and drug driving in the vicinity of fast food outlets on Saturday January 12. During the operation a total of 57 vehicles were intercepted and requested to do preliminary breath tests, two of which returned a positive reading. A total of 47 drivers were given a preliminary oral fluid test, with four returning a posi-

tive reading. A total of 21 penalty notices were issued. The final intercept of the operation particularly baffled members - a 56 year old driver was observed driving into a curb and almost hitting a sign. He returned an evidentiary breath test reading of 0.190 and his oral fluid test returned a positive result to cannabis. The driver reported that he had driven all

the way from Wonthaggi. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was issued a Section 51 notice - immediately suspending his driver's licence. The driver will be summonsed to appear at court. It is a reminder to everyone to be safe on the road and call 000 if you see someone driving erratically.

botics event held at the Convention Centre in Melbourne, students from Harkaway Primary School were selected to compete at the National Championships in Kentucky. Over the two days, they were competing with schools from all around Australia and were among the youngest competitors there. In fact, we were the only state primary school at the event. Their section of the competition had more than 20 teams. "This is a significant achievement given that we only started this year, had no way near the resourcing most other schools had, and we were up against mostly secondary school teams," Harkaway Primary School principal Leigh Johnson said. "Ultimately, it is not about the technology, it is all about people working together to problem solve and create unique solutions that help shape their world."

Footy fun with the Dees There were plenty of thrills, skills and drills when more than 260 kids joined Melbourne Football Club's (MFC) women's teams for a day of football fun on Saturday 12 January. The Dees' AFLW and VFLW players hosted a free junior clinic at Casey's premier sporting precinct, Casey Fields, following an open training session and practice match earlier in the day. The children were put through their paces in a variety of games and drills, learning from stars of the women's competitions. Participants in the clinic were aged from three to 16-years-old with majority being female, highlighting the impact the AFLW competition has had on the sport. The sun was shining, Daisy the mascot was in attendance and there were giveaways and

opportunities for player autographs. The City of Casey and MFC proudly formed a 30-year partnership in 2009 and since then have been working together to promote and engage the community in sport, create talent pathways and provide unique opportunities for residents such as the AFLW Junior Clinic. The women's team have three home games at Casey Fields as part of their AFLW season, on Sunday 3 February, Sunday 24 February and Saturday 16 March. With free entry, plenty of children's activities and prizes to be won, head along and cheer on Casey's affiliated club for a great afternoon out. The men's team also have a match at Casey Fields, where they'll take on the Brisbane Lions on Saturday 9 March in week two of the AFL JLT Community Series. This will be a ticketed

St John’s birthday Celebrations were held on Friday 18 January to commemorate the first birthday of the new St John of God Berwick Hospital. The first baby born at the new hospital, Andy Gaspardis, celebrated his first birthday as a special guest at the evening event. In the year since the award winning hospital opened, the team have accomplished much to be celebrated. "Years of meticulous planning resulted in our beautiful new hospital which has been a huge success," hospital CEO Lisa Norman said. "It's been incredibly satisfying to watch as our dreams come to life and offer our community an enhanced health care service. "Additional beds have allowed us to double the number of patients we can care for and new services have allowed us to offer a more complex range of health care." New services have included the opening of the first Intensive Care Unit in the region, which allows the hospital to accept more complex surgical and medical patients and care for them closer to home. The introduction of cardiac services has enabled doctors to insert cardiac stents and pacemakers in the low dose Siemens catheter laboratory. A new Rehabilitation Unit gives patients recovering from surgery, illness or trauma the opportunity to recover and regain strength, under the same roof as where they underwent surgery or medical treatment. Now employing over 700 caregivers with accreditation for over 560 doctors, a recruitment campaign saw over 300 new employees join the workforce as the hospital grew from an 82 bed campus with four operating theatres to a multi-level 202 bed hospital with eight operating theatres and six birth suites. The hospital also invested in a number of new medical technologies, with the acquisition of a Holmium Laser (MOSES) so that

With regard to your story “Outrage over parking fines’ (Berwick Star News, Thursday, 17 January). How can the parking signs be confusing or deceiving, when they clearly state that there are 'no stopping’ restrictions from 7.30am - 9.30am and 2.30pm - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday? If you choose to disobey a parking sign, by either stopping or parking in this area, then you deserve to be caught and fined! It is not an excuse to say that others do it, so I’m going to as well. Ignorance is no excuse! Kangan Drive is, at the best of times, a narrow and congested roadway and clearly, Casey Council has decided to make it safer during these peak times, for all road users. Do the crime, pay the fine! Terry Walsh, Narre Warren South

I was interested to read the story “Among state’s best” beside the picture on the front page of this week’s Cranbourne Star News, but I wondered what the ‘Imitative of the Year Award’ was about, and what they were ‘imitating’ ? Turning to page 7 as instructed, I learned that the award was for Local Government Initiative in Sport - which I do understand, and well done to the City of Casey for catering for youth sport. Incidentally, many years ago, I played cricket at Catani with a Noel Duyvestyn - and I think he had a wife called Elaine. Maybe she is the lady who is being considered for an award for her contribution to softball? I only bump into Noel very occasionally these days. Then I read the "In brief” column on page 3, only to find that the first story about a P plate driver being clocked at 188 km/h is also the third story. Was it a slow week in local crime? At least we might be glad that no one was killed in these traffic violations. And I am pleased that ‘In Brief’ on page 7 has two different stories. I have been reading your papers since we first received the “Pakenham Gazette“ when I began teaching at Bayles P.S. in the early ‘70s and later at Kooweerup - and the Editor was the late Herb Thomas. His wife did the proof reading - and I don’t think she would have let these two errors pass through. We have told many people of the journalism awards that the Gazette has won and what an excellent local newspaper it was. We do hope that the Thomas standards are not dropping? On 21 January, a story was shared on the Berwick Star News Facebook page about a 17-year-old boy charged with 42 offences for dangerous driving. Here is how some readers reacted online: Penny Giaquinta: 42 offences but will get off with good behaviour bond because he from a broken home or has mental problems or something garbage then get out and go straight back out to do more law breaking. This is a waste of time! Sandy Dutta: Caught and released pending enquiry. They should be detained for a day to teach them a lesson. On 20 January, a video was shared on the Berwick Star News Facebook page about the drivers that have been stung with parking fines at the front of two hospitals along Kangan Drive in Berwick. Here is how some readers reacted online: Brian RB: Nothing confusing there, pay the fine and stop parking illegally. Annette Fullman: Pretty easy to understand. Paul Williams: You can park from 9.30am until 2.30pm for up to two hours. Pretty simple. Jenny Connelly: It's clear to me. Susan Bryce: It cost me $3 to park at Casey Hospital while I took my granddaughter for an echocardiography. We were there less than an hour. Cheaper than getting a fine. Carey Haggerty: Very confusing for people already stressed by attending appointments usually cancer spots. Parking attendants are sitting waiting for people. I can see this happen from my work window.

When the giving won't stop Gethsemane Church Charity in Berwick stayed open right through the Christmas break - including on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. When the La-Brooy family sat down to their Christmas lunch it was way into the evening, nevertheless Kerrigan, his wife Michelle and their six children, had never felt happier and more content. "We believe people need help and food particularly at this time of the year, so we didn't want to shut our doors for even a single day," Mr La-Brooy said. "Although our hours of operation are 12 to 2pm, we welcomed community members 24/7 - all they had to do was knock on our door. "We ensured our 'holiday' didn't infringe on people's needs. Plus, it was our way of fulfilling the true meaning of Christmas." Around 400 people benefit daily from Gethsemane Church Charity. During the Christmas season this number doubled. In addition to hosting the Clyde Carols by Candlelight, Gethsemane went house-tohouse carolling. This included retirement villages and nursing homes where the inhabitants and staff

St John to the rescue spected and appreciated St John Ambulance is amongst the community. To express her gratitude for the two St John first-aiders that helped, Ms Chippet personally thanked them for their efforts on Tuesday 22 January. "I'm so thankful that St John's was present at the event, I don't know what would have happened without their help on the night," she said. "Following this ordeal I'm now considering volunteering for St John's so I can help people like they helped me. "They helped calm me down, and made me feel more at ease. They were so patient and understanding through-out the whole situation."

Carley Chippet attended the Hampton Park Carols by Candlelight and became unresponsive on December 14. During this time, Ms Chippet was unable to move or respond to anybody around her; however she was still able to hear people surrounding her. During this stressful encounter, she was not able to put a face to the voices that were talking to her and being touched was very anxiety inducing. Fortunately, there were two St John Ambulance first-aiders nearby that were able to assist her and calm her down. This encounter solidifies the importance of St John Ambulance's services and how well re-

alike, were touched by the love and compassion shared, as they were treated to carol singing and Christmas cheer. Gethsemane's Christmas Miracle was a poignant moment for many, because for some children, it was the only gift they received for Christmas. A full-time professional singer, songwriter and entertainer before becoming a Pastor, Mr La-Brooy is also contemplating returning to the studio to record and release a family gospel album while his six children are still in their childhood-voice-mode. He plans to donate proceeds from the album to the charity. "Our vision and mission at Gethsemane is not confined to the four walls of the church building but to cater to the community whether they come to church or not," he said. Gethsemane seeks to expand its territory because they've enlarged the site of their home and stretched their curtains wide, with barely enough space to operate. Arts and crafts galore Volunteer members from the Endeavour Hills Men's Shed have been out and about running school holiday programs across Casey. Men's Shed members conducted a plant label painting session at the Endeavour Hills Library last Thursday and a planting, woodwork and bicycle repair day with children at the Endeavour Hills Town Square this Thursday 17 January. Participants learnt all about plants and got creative with paint and woodwork. Men's Shed member Tony Cannata donated all of the plants for the activities. The men designed an activity where the children chose an Australian animal (or a dinosaur),

researched it using the library's resources and then painted a wooden stake featuring the animal and selected a plant to put it in.The Endeavour Hills Men's Shed is very supportive of CCL's activities and offer advice and activities to both the young and old. It was a great partnership/collaboration between the library and the Men's Shed. Volunteers from the Endeavour Hills Men's Shed Stan Ashley and Tony Cannata spent a day encouraging children, such as with children Levi and Ben to discover facts, learn all about plants and get creative with paint and woodwork in the Endeavour Hills Town Square.

LEAVE EARLY The reasons are black and white

There’s no questioning the facts. Bushfires can start quickly and threaten lives within minutes. When it comes to fire, what you need to do is black and white. Check Fire Danger Ratings in your district daily, and monitor conditions. Most bushfire deaths happen close to home, so on high-risk fire days, leaving early, before a fire starts, is always the safest option.

GIFT DRIVE PROVIDES FESTIVE COMFORT SHOWING true Christmas spirit, the community has supported Parklea’s annual Christmas Gift Drive, bringing Christmas joy to disadvantaged children. Parklea received a large amount of generously donated gifts, toys and nonperishable food items in the donation bins located across the Cardinia Shire. All gifts and food items were donated to Windermere Child and Family Services and The Salvation Army, who each year assist thousands of people in the local community with food, housing, job assistance, counselling, support and more. The Salvation Army distributed the donated gifts and food items to over 1,000 less fortunate families in the Cardinia Shire via Christmas hampers. These hampers helped feed families on Christmas day and bring joy to disadvantaged children. For most families, Christmas is a time of excitement and joy, as they celebrate the festive season with their family and friends. For families struggling to put food on the table Christmas can be a painful reminder of the financial troubles and hardships they face. Belinda Barker, Fundraising Coordinator for Windermere, was amazed by the amount of donations this year’s Gift Drive accumulated. “We are extremely grateful for the generous gift donations made by the community and thank Parklea for helping us spread Christmas cheer,“ she said. “It’s a great feeling knowing that these gifts will be given to families and children who truly appreciate them.“ Parklea’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Jarod Mills, says these initiatives are a

As a developer of communities, it is important we give back to those less fortunate,” Jarod said.

“Parklea is proud to have facilitated the Gift Drive for the fourth consecutive year. We look forward to working with local charities and businesses within the Cardinia Shire for future Gift Drives to come.” Parklea would like to thank the local

Have a hippy new year! It will be a hippy new year for orthopaedic patients in Melbourne’s South-East. Orthopaedic care is expanding in Berwick with St John of God Berwick Hospital set to open a brand new unit specialising in treating injuries and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system. A first for the hospital, the new orthopaedic unit will open in February and is currently recruiting compassionate caregivers to join its growing team. The fourth-floor ward has been left empty since the opening of the new hospital in January 2018 to accommodate future growth. It was not anticipated to be needed for the first few years of operation; however, local demand has seen it necessary to offer further orthopaedic services to the residents of Melbourne’s southeast. The ward has the capacity for 28 beds and will primarily focus on orthopaedic and neurosurgical patients. The new unit sees the beginning of an emphasis on orthopaedic services. The hospital’s MAKO robot, currently used for partial knee replacements, will be utilised for full knee replacements in 2019. “It is reassuring for local patients to know that not only do they have access to this technology so close to home, but they can access rehabilitation under the same roof,” a St John

Anti wrinkle injections: The role of anti wrinkle injections is to relax wrinkle causing muscles, thereby softening and preventing the development of expression lines, creating a smooth and rejuvenated appearance. Wrinkles often appear around the forehead and eyes when we smile or frown and these areas can be treated along with crow’s feet, using a well studied safe medication that suits all skin types, administered only by our qualified medical professional. Skin Needling: Skin needling is a skin rejuvenation treatment that helps stimulate collagen and elastin to promote smoother, healthier skin through a natural healing process. This treatment is suitable for all skin types and is designed to support skin regeneration to help conditions including acne scars, surgical scars/scarring, stretch marks, fine lines, pigmentation, enlarged pores, blackheads and mild textural irregularities and is suitable for treatment during the summer months. Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light: Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light is used to treat conditions related to skin damage and premature aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, redness, acne scars, broken capillaries, pigmentation, melasma, age spots and general photo rejuvenation. Non ablative skin rejuvenation uses radio frequencies to improve the appearance of wrinkles, brown spots and minor scars by creating heat in the skin with out injuring the surface of the skin. The heat generated promotes collagen production which results in tighter, healthier, younger Iooking skin. Treatments are suitable to most skin types. Supporting studies Getting into university can be tough. What to study, where to study it, what is work going to be like once all the study is over? For a young adult in high school, the information on offer can be overwhelming. Doxa's University Pathways Program is a multi-year, multi-touchpoint program that provides students with first-hand experience of university life and a taste of the world of work. Five Fountain Gate Secondary College students participated in the program, including Year 12 student Jagdeep Singh. "I found out about Doxa through my school; I love the program because it's so insightful and you get so many opportunities," he said. "You get many free opportunities to get an insight into university pathways and it's an extremely social program. "Through participating in Doxa's University Pathways Program we get to know about all these different pathways and career opportunities. We are always one step ahead of the average student, which is always good because you have more time to prepare yourself and don't have to rush into decisions." Mr Singh said he is interested in studying biology. "It's my favourite field of science. I'm looking at going to Melbourne or Monash but after visiting ACU with Doxa, it's an option too," he said. "As long as I'm doing something in biology from pharmaceutical science to biomed." The University Pathways Program is open to young people with challenging life cir-

Students in Year 12 from around Victoria including Geelong, Gippsland and across Melbourne recently took part in two University Pathways Program sessions. Students developed their personal, professional and employment skills by visiting universities and corporate workplaces across Mel-

Since its inception in 2015, more than 800 young people have participated in the Doxa University Pathways Program. Doxa CEO, Steve Clifford, said, "At Doxa, we offer support for young people from challenging life circumstances and give them opportunities they may not otherwise have access to. "Many of our followers from the previous location came to check out the new larger venue and gave it the big thumbs up," Making Strides Markets director Julie Benson said. "Add that to the new local following that came, and it was plain to see that with the South Eastern Suburbs being the largest growth corridor in Melbourne, the residents of the City of Casey are embracing these family orientated events." The Berwick Night Market is a free event organised by local families for local families, stallholders, shopping, live music, food trucks, jumping castle and all amid a beer garden vibe. The next night market will be on February 15.

Buckley's uncertain future By Nick Creely Dandenong District powerhouse Buckley Ridges faces an uncertain future and increased pressure from council to relocate in the coming years after safety concerns were raised due to the overlapping of its home base, Park Oval, and the adjoining oval, Wilson Oval. Park Oval - one of the iconic grounds in the association, is laced with history - but has come under scrutiny for the size of its oval, with the Pultney Street ground located just outside of Shepley Oval. It is understood that council initially advised the club at a meeting on the morning of Thursday 17 January that they would be relocating to nearby Greaves Reserve 4 as of the weekend for a select amount of matches, to alleviate concerns that someone would be hit by a cricket ball playing on the overlapping oval. When given the chance to defend the club, De Silva highlighted several factors, such as the fact that the two clubs have played side by side for three decades, citing issues with other grounds in the Metro region, the extremely strong junior program that has been developed, as well as a lease agreement for the year and their successful refugee program as reasons why they should not be booted out. The council had a follow up meeting that afternoon, and advised the club shortly after that they would try and work together to mitigate the risks so it won't disrupt the current season, in which the Bucks are absolutely flying, particularly in Turf 1. On the next day, the council contacted the club to advise that they will remain at their iconic home, for at least this season, however. De Silva told Star News Group that the club was disappointed with the entire process, but confirmed that cricket wouldn't be impacted

Buckley Ridges will remain in its iconic home until at least the end of the season. 189071 this season, which is a slight sigh of relief. "Everything will go ahead as per normal, and they will look at everything and reconsider their stance and any precautions to be taken. Every game will go ahead, "he said. "Cricket's been played on those ovals for almost 40 years, and nothing's happened, and it is strange timing to try and move us midseason- the process was wrong. "(But) I understand there is risk involved." De Silva said the club will make a strong move to claim Wilson Oval, which was used

by the club prior to Dandenong's thirds and fourths, but admitted the future of the powerhouse is in the air, with the club seeing its long-term future being in the City of Casey, and admits there's a range of different possibilities about where the club could land. "We'll keep fighting as we go along - the future is really uncertain," he said. "We've approached Casey council, and they won't put on turf grounds for 10 years - but we see our future in the Casey area. "We feel we can add value by bringing in a powerhouse club, with our systems and struc-

tures - we can do a lot more to the community than where we are now." De Silva also said that finding a solution will be a long process, with potential moves to Greaves Reserve or a merger with a fellow DDCA club all possibilities. "We have to consider it (moving to Greaves Reserve) - our clubhouse and practice area isn't the best, but we have a lot of resistance from the membership, and we understand where they're coming from, but it comes down to the council if they won't give us another lease," he said. "There's a lot of DDCA clubs that are struggling in Dandenong, so there could be a merger opportunity, I'm open to everything. "But it is also a membership that I have to convince, and it's hard, because there's history and love for the place (Park Oval)." Director of Community Services for the City of Greater Dandenong, Martin Fidler, said that the council simply complied with Cricket Australia guidelines. "To ensure compliance with the Cricket Australia Community Infrastructure Guidelines, council undertook an audit of all cricket grounds in the municipality," he said. "As a result of the audits council met with three local cricket clubs to discuss the outcomes of the audit and to discuss options for allowing the continuity of play for the existing season. "Council is committed to working with the clubs and has not directed or requested that the clubs move or reschedule games. Options have been discussed with the clubs to ensure the games for the remainder of the current season can continue at existing grounds and council and the clubs are meeting to discuss longer term solutions for the next season."

Hawks enjoy a golden day at the office By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 AND 2 REVIEW - ROUND 11 (DAY ONE) Absolutely dominance from ball one until stumps. Premiership smoky Hallam Kalora Park enjoyed a golden day at the office, completely dismantling reigning premiers Mordialloc with precision at Ben Kavanagh Reserve. While they've been sitting underneath the perch of heavyweights Buckley Ridges and Springvale South for most of the Turf 1 season, the Hawks have quietly been building a case as a legitimate premiership contender. With the Bloodhounds back in form, and on their own home deck, the Hawks sent the home side in to bat, and it paid off ... big time. The Hawks - off the back of stunning performances from Jordan Hammond (4/20) and Leigh Booth (5/17) - completely shattered the top-order, middle order and eventually the tail in a dominant effort that saw the home side walk off with a lowly 65 next to their name in just 39.1 overs. Incredibly, the Bloodhounds hit just two boundaries, both off the bat of Lochlan Davies (23), with the intense pressure applied providing too hard of an ask for a normally free flowing side. Ben Hillard (44 not out) and Leigh Booth

(32) secured first-innings points in a 73-run opening stand despite Nuwan Kulasekera (2/21) steaming in for the Bloodhounds, with the Hawks reach 3/91 by stumps as they eye a potential outright victory on Saturday. Berwick, meanwhile, compiled a competitive total of 8/262 against ladder leaders Buckley Ridges at Arch Brown, but whether it's enough, well only time will tell. In a really important game for the Bears' finals hopes, the Bucks - shaking off a tough week, where the future of the club was put in doubt - broke through with a wicket in the opening over, with superstar Daniel Watson snaring the scalp of in-form opener Jordan Cleland without troubling the scorers. The Bears kept the scoreboard ticking along, with Nathan Pilon (79 off 75 balls) once again looking in ominous touch, while the likes of Josh Holden (39), Matt Chasemore (34), Jack Phillips (24) and Brendan Rose (32) all performing strongly to help give the home side a competitive total to defend. Heinz Southern Districts recovered from a slow start to post 203 against Springvale South at Alex Nelson Reserve. The Cobras found themselves 4/63 after Steven Spoljaric (2/40 off 27 overs) bowled beautifully early on, but experience trio Kaushalya Weeraratne (43), Suraj Randiv (33)

Morteza Ali goes big for Narre South on Saturday. 189285

and Michael Davies (53) withstood the heat and surged ahead. Continuing his fine form with the ball, tweaker Jarryd Straker (5/18) was the dominant player on the ground, rattling through the lower order to help contain the Cobras from inching towards a 250-plus total. And North Dandenong (140) is engaged in a tight battle with St Mary's (0/18) after a tough day of cricket at Lois Twohig Reserve. In Turf 2, Saturday was Morteza Ali's day. The Narre South star enjoyed his most dom-

inant day of the season, helping set-up first innings points and a potential outright against St Brigid's/St Louis at Strathaird Reserve. Ali snared brilliant figures of 6/47 off 16 overs to see the visitors rolled for just 88, after Scott Phillips (2/20) broke through to snare a wicket off the first ball of the match. The searing momentum from Ali the bowler to Ali the batsman was evident, with the righthander helping the Lions cross the total with a dynamic 48 off 51 balls, a knocking featuring five boundaries and three sixes.

Beaver is inspiring the next wave of young swimmers By Hayley Wildes Tooradin-raised swimmer and Olympian Josh Beaver is leading the charge for Swimming Australia's newest initiative; Australia Swims. Beaver, who competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics and also boasts two silver and two bronze Commonwealth Games medals, swam at the Portsea Swim Classic on Saturday as part of a 10-day celebration that aims to inspire Australians to reconnect with their love of swimming for its many health, wellbeing and social benefits. "I've been working with Swimming Australia for the last six months and we've just berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

launched Australia Swims," Beaver said. "Basically what we're trying to do is have more people around water, involved in water and by doing that we're pledging swims to swim a virtual lap around Australia in 10 days. "I'm obviously pretty passionate about swimming myself, so I'm talking to people about the advantages of being around water and swimming, and also creating awareness and inspiring people to be around water. "We're trying to have more people in water and inspire a life-long love of swimming." Swimmers can pledge and track their distance on a new interactive app, iSwim, created

by Swimming Australia, to be a part of the collective 35,855km lap around Australia. The backstroke specialist, who won bronze in the 200m backstroke event at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, swam 1.5km at the Portsea Swim Classic and says the collective effort to swim around Australia is on track. "We had some really good pledges over the weekend and I think we're over the Northern Territory at the moment, which is fantastic and there's still one more week to go," he said. "Obviously Australia Day is pretty significant, there's a lot of people around water on Australia Day, so we're hoping to have pledges roll in that day."

Beaver talked about his love for getting out in the community and inspiring young swimmers. "I'm really passionate about it and I've always enjoyed getting out in the community, sharing my story and inspiring the next generation of Australian Dolphins," he said. "Swimming is part of our DNA, it's something that we do and a mentor of mine says to me that it's of national importance - we're surrounded by water," "It's a pretty exciting opportunity to have so many bodies of water for people to be swimming in, but we need to be advocating water safety as well." Swans continue fine form By Nick Creely "I don't think we've put together a complete package of a performance yet, with both bat, ball and in the field, yet we're still winning games." Casey-South Melbourne skipper Luke Wells certainly has the confidence that the Swans can knock over anyone on their day, and when his group does fully gel, look out. The seventh placed Swans landed yet another scalp on Saturday, further reinforcing their stunning improvement by putting together their most "professional" performance of the year against Northcote at Bill Lawry Oval. Off the back of their gun skipper - who compiled another stellar 87 off 112 balls - the Swans won the toss and posted a healthy 8/227 off their 50 overs on a slow pitch. The Swans got off to a bright start by compiling 42 for the first wicket, but consistent wickets dented their progress, before a late charge from Wells, Jordan Wyatt (23) and Devin Pollock (26) got the visitors into a defendable position. But it was with the ball that Wells' group once again impressed, defending their modest total for the second week in a row to restrict the Dragons to 221 after bowling them out in the final over of the day. In a stunningly even bowling effort, Jackson Fry (2/53) removed dangerous openers Solomon Mire (21) and Mark Phelan (55), Josh Dowling (2/55) did a fine job through the middle to continue his great season, while spinners Lachie Sperling (2/37) and Wells (1/35) each kept things tight too, and managed to snare three wickets between them. But, once again, spearhead Nathan Lambden's (3/36) brilliant form came to the fore, finishing off the game like gun bowlers do, to surge into 12th on the Premier Cricket wicket list. The big quick now has 20 wickets at 22.9, with an impressive strike rate of 33.5 "I feel like he's made a lot of progress, and he's adapting his game to conditions really well," Wells said of Lambden's season.

"For example on the weekend, the pitch was particularly suited to slower balls, so for a guy who wants to bowl as fast as he can, he bowled a load of slower balls, and got the rewards." After another close win - one that sees them move to a 7-3 record and within five points of Melbourne Uni in fourth - Wells praised the bowlers for their performance, and said that the recent close victories and the ability to defend any score is pleasing. "It's been good, and pretty stressful, I wouldn't mind a low maintenance, less stressful win, but we've defended well so far in the oneday stuff," he said with a chuckle. "We've got reasonable totals together without necessarily getting a match-winning one, so we've worked hard to defend those scores around the 230 mark - we've got a good blueprint at the moment, Nathan Lambden and Jacko Fry have bowled well up top, Josh Dowling as first change seamer has been good, and Lachie (Sperling) and myself have both been pretty economical. "I feel like the guys are learning a lot - although (Saturday) it was tight, I felt that we were the most professional while I've been out here, to be fair. It's been really pleasing." Wells said that the Swans will only get better as the red-ball cricket starts to heat up again, and can't wait to see what his group can produce in the back-end of the season. "We're a really talented group, and winning's a habit, and so is losing, so the guys just expect to win, and they know what they need to do to win," he said. "We've taken down some top teams - we beat Fitzroy, almost beat Dandenong in a two-dayer, beat St Kilda and other sides, and it proves that on our day, we can beat anyone in the league. "I'm looking forward to getting into the twoday stuff, we've played a lot of one-day cricket - I feel like we're potentially a better two-day outfit." The Swans will travel to take on Melbourne Uni on Saturday for a two-day game, in a massive clash for both sides.

Panthers surge forward By Nick Creely and Hayley Wildes WGCA PREMIER DIVISION REVIEW - ROUND 10 Devon Meadows emerged as the big winners of the round, surging into fourth spot, displacing Tooradin after a barnstorming victory against Upper Beaconsfield. The Panthers taught the Maroons a stern lesson after winning the toss and electing to bat. Contributions from Luke Hamilton (42) and Kyle Salerno (30) saw the home side reach an imposing 214. While the Maroons battled to contain the firepower of the Panthers, Kyle Gibbs (2/20) and Daniel Brennan (2/35) finished with impressive figures. The Maroons were unable to recover after their 2/13 start, with Dodd (3/20), Lucas Carroll (2/9) and O'Connor (2/18) doing a fine job, rattling through the visitors for just 94. Tooradin was stunned by an excellent bowling display from Kooweerup quick Tiron Fernando (4/27), who helped the visitors restrict the home side to just 9/126. Mark Cooper's side were dealt with a couple of early wickets, but young guns Tyler Clark (44 not out) and Mitch Cammarano (36 not out) showed great poise to help guide the Demons to a comfortable six-wicket win. Pakenham stamped their authority with a brilliant performance against a struggling Cardinia - the Bulls were resigned to their third straight defeat. The Lions bowled superbly, rolling the visitors for just 90, with Troy McDermott (4/21) in fine touch. It took a mere 63 balls for the Lions to claim victory, with Ben Maroney (69) guiding the home side to a comfortable victory. Clyde defeated Merinda Park at home to continue to place pressure on the top four. After sending the Cobras in, Nick Sadler (1/23) shattered the stumps of Daniel McCalman off just the second ball of the match and the visitors soon found themselves 7/69 after Matt Aslett (5/27) tore through the middle order. A brilliant 69-run stand from Leigh Paterson (48) and Mathew Campbell (49) for the 10th wicket saw the Cobras somehow reach 177. The Cougars couldn't have got off to a worse start, losing Brett Reid, John Simpson and Daniel Walton in the opening overs to be 3/5, but skipper Kiefer Peries (40) got the innings back on track. Jason Hameeteman (61) and Kane Avard (60) brought the target within reach. A massive six from Sadler eventually secured the Cougars the points in the final over of the match. DISTRICT DIVISION Cranbourne Meadows' perfect season continued in round 10, easily accounting for Tooradin.

The Rebels (6/268) were led by Sibghat Ullah (52) and Kulith Rabel (46 not out) and had the Seagulls on the back foot all innings. Tooradin (7/176) got strong middle order contributions from David Freeman (37) and Ned Harrison (33), but their run rate was never going to be enough. NNG/Maryknoll scored a win over Cardinia. The Bulls chose to bat first and would immediately regret that decision, losing two wickets before getting off the mark as Dean Henwood (3/18) did the damage early and the Bulls could only muster a total of 146 as Travis Gray (4/31) ran riot. In reply, the Marygoons - despite losing early wickets - claimed the win as Scott Hayes (64 not out) led NNG/Maryknoll (6/148). A Mitchell Copey masterclass led Emerald (5/268) to a big win over Clyde (177). The Bomber opener was simply dominant as he smashed his way to 108 off 107 balls, including 16 fours and a six. Copey combined with Mark Alenson (45) for a 116-run stand. In reply, Clyde had batsmen get off to starts - led by Warwick Weir (45) and Zac Davis (32) but it wasn't enough as Sam Stapleton (3/31) and Ashley Hill (3/35) claimed key wickets. A batting collapse from Carlisle Park (97) saw Officer (2/98) claim an easy win. The Vikings batted first and lost their final seven wickets for just 38 runs as Shaun Weir (3/12) and James Quinn (3/15) did plenty of damage. The Bullants paced their run and did it easy as Ash Smith (41 not out) and Peter Quinn (28 not out) led them to victory.

BERWICK BOWLS Round 13 of pennant bowls was played on Saturday, once again under perfect blue skies. Five sides were victorious from Berwick this round. Congratulations to the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 9th sides on their victories. Unfortunately, the Sixes were unable to maintain their winning streak, succumbing to the Dandenong Club. The Ones and Twos were also defeated, away from home, and the Eights had a bye. The Best winning rink of the round, with +32 shots, from Side 9 was the team of: Alf Reina, Chris Jones, Jan Lapinskas and our youngest Skip, Mitchell Keel. These two champions have shared a lot of success over their many years of association with the club. In fact, the two of them have won four club pairs championships; 1991, 1993, 1996 and 1997, Allen was club singles champion in 1993, while Ray was singles champion in 1988 and 1994. The club was hoping that their past success would rub off on the Cranbourne side, but unfortunately Edithvale was the better side on the day, despite sharing wins on two rinks each. The next two Cranbourne sides also went down but the remaining sides had victories. During the week, the ladies Division 1 side game was called off due to extreme heat on the day, so they had to share the points but still remain on the top of the ladder. Side 1 - Division 2 Skip Frank Byrne had a good hard fought win by three shots, backed up by good form from teammates John McKenna and Shane Morrison. Skip Barry Thomas got up by oneshot on the last end, but the deficit remained at 20 shots. Cranbourne 65 (four points) lost to Edithvale 85. Side 2 - Division 3 Skip Peter Colthup and his team of Gary Farrington, John Stanley and Maree Taylor won by seven shots and almost single-handedly pulled off victory. With only a few ends remaining though, it all went pair shaped and Cranbourne lost by 11 shots. Cranbourne 69 (two points) lost to Mulgrave Country Club 80. Side 3 - Division 5 Brian Legg, Karen Hickson and David Brown and skip Ron Shields matched it with the opposition and won by two shots, but once again Cranbourne came up short and lost by 22 shots. Cranbourne 63 (two points) lost to Willow Lodge 85. Side 4 - Division 7 Super skip Sofio Raiti has done it again with

Cranbourne Bowls Club legends Allen Mickle and Ray Boskell attended Saturday's competition. another superb bowling display. Sofio has won the highest winning margin at the club four weeks running - who can stop him? Sofio was very pleased with his team; Helen Witherden, Bob Pyne and Rob Dickson, which won by 13 shots. Not only did Sofio have a good day but the side picked up another valuable 18 points in victory. Cranbourne 89 (18 points) defeated Carrum 61. Side 5 - Six-a-side This was a tight game that could have gone either way, but fortunately Cranbourne won by one-shot. Skip John Forsyth and his rink of Graeme Robinson and Jess O'Dea finished the game three shots up. Cranbourne 32 (12 points) defeated Waverley Park 31. NARRE WARREN It was different week for Narre Warren bowlers this week, with Tuesday pennant was called off due to the extreme heat rule by Bowls Victoria. Both Division 2 and 3 teams shared the points when the temperature reached 36 degrees at lunchtime. Division A (six-a-side) had already received a walkover. On Saturday, the Division 3 team was the only winner. Against Chelsea at Fountain Gate, Erik Luyters, Colin Groom, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar led the way with a 33-15 win, helped by Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Rod Lane and Cam Lee (25-22). Eric Sydenham, Zade Bulmer, Iain Stevenson and Wilma Stevenson had a 19-all draw, but John Wright, David Entwistle, Percy Herath and Zak Storm lost 2615.
