THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… OYSTER CASH IN PRINCIPLE
GET INTO THIS FESTIVAL FOR ALL AUSTRALIANS The inclusiveness of the Noosa Lions and Rotary communities was among the reasons singer Andrea Kirwin wanted to perform at the Noosa Australia Day festival being held on Saturday 26 January on Gympie Terrace, Noosaville from 7am to 5pm. "It's a wonderful way to celebrate being Australian," she said. "I do have compassion for the indigenous community wanting to change the date. It would be lovely to celebrate all together." With her mother a Fijian church minister, Andrea first found her love of singing in church when she was growing up in Townsville. She gave up a law degree to follow a career in music and now the singersongwriter performs about 300 shows a year across Australia and New Zealand. Her broad style includes folk, roots, blues and reggae and on Saturday she will be singing mostly originals with a few classic Australian songs in the mix. Festival organiser Jacqui Nichols said the free festival would raise funds to support local charities United Synergies, Katie Rose Cottage and St Vincent de Paul. "We'll have a knockout line-up for everyone so bring the family, grab your friends and come along to the Noosa Australia Day Festival," Jacqui said. "We're bringing Lions Park in Noosaville to life with Cheap Fakes headlining great Aussie talent on the main stage, and plenty of kids' fun, amusement rides and fabulous food stalls in the park all day. "We also have comedians, a magician, pony rides, classic cars, baby wallabies and plenty more fun."
BY MARGARET MACCOLL
The Cherry Ripes will be part of the all day entertainment. There's also entertainment from comedian Cherry Atrick; a display of Noosa classic cars; roaming entertainment from Brazilian dancers, musical comedy, balloon artists and a stilt walker; and other kids' activities including pony rides, a giant slide, rock wall climbing, rides, Luke's reptile kingdom, a petting zoo, Koala Crusaders, baby wallabies and face painting. For more information visit http://www. noosaaustraliadayfestival.com or search for Noosa Australia Day Festival on Facebook. ●
Andrea Kirwin and band will perform at Noosa Australia Day Festival.
HAVE YOUR SAY ON SURVEY - CLOCK TICKING Time is running out to have your say on a range of State Government issues including the legalisation of medicinal cannabis, voluntary euthanasia, and daylight saving. The Noosa MP survey has been set up by Noosa MP Sandy Bolton to "help guide and enable her to determine priorities and the pulse of the Noosa electorate for 2019". "The importance of residents voicing and communicating any feedback or input that they may have around concerns, or how we can make our electorate even better is vital, as it is all about positive and constructive community activism," she said.
"I spend an enormous time out in the community but cannot get to chat with every single person, on or offline, and I would like to! This is a way to do so." "As well, the collective voice, as already shown in a number of successful outcomes recently including the coal exploration permit refusal, gives valuable strength to an MP's rationale in debates in Parliament and when advocating our various Government departments." So far the survey has raised local issues involving roads, youth and family support and wildlife corridors/ crossings, while state issues
have included road congestion to Brisbane, affordable transition to renewables, violence and domestic violence and palliative/end of life care. The polls have shown support of about 93 per cent for voluntary euthanasia, 67 per cent for daylight saving, 85 per cent for poker machine reform/reduction and more than 96 per cent for the legalization of medicinal cannabis. The survey closes Sunday 27 January. To be involved visit SandyBolton.com/yoursay. ●
Noosa Council has agreed in principle to commit $1.2m toward the second phase of Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation’s Bring Back the Fish (BBF) project, which is one year into a three-year pilot to establish oyster reefs in the Noosa River and shows mixed results. Under the deal Council will partner with environmental organisation The Nature Conservancy (TNC) which will match the $1.2m contribution, manage the next phase of the project and seek to source a further $1.2m investment. Council’s environmental services manager Craig Doolan said initial results of the pilot project showed “natural oyster recruitment occurring on the reefs ... of the desired oyster species” and “increased fish numbers around the trial reefs”. However, at Council’s Ordinary Meeting Cr Ingrid Jackson said a USC one-year monitoring report revealed there was a “lack of evidence ... of the current reef design forming a stable matrix”, a lack of “detailed results from fish studies” and “key areas where targets for success have not yet been achieved and would be better assessed after another year of monitoring”. Cr Jackson did not support the deal saying the decision was being made without sufficient information, without sufficient evaluation of the oyster reef trial, without financial analysis and without due process. “A decision to fund this proposal now pre-empts public consultation and finalisation of the Environment Strategy and Noosa River Plan, which are both yet to be approved by Council,” she said. Mr Doolan said under the proposed partnership $1.3m would be spent on installing oyster reefs, $1.1m would go toward engaging various scientists, project planning, and community liaison. And a further $1.2m, when sourced, would be used “to expand the installation of oyster reefs”. Mayor Tony Wellington said “this next phase of the BBF project will enable us to put the research and findings from that pilot project into substantially larger oyster reefs”. “The Nature Conservancy have plenty of experience with this sort of conservation work, having built reefs in other countries,” he said. Council staff will draft a partnership agreement to go back to council. ●

COVER STORY
A HUGE LEAP BY MARGARET MACCOLL or a family of rugby players and surfers Huw Pritchard's desire to learn ballet at the age of 13 came as a surprise. Huw, now, 18, also played rugby and patrolled as a lifesaver at Noosa Heads like his mother, Kylie, and his older brothers. But when he watched his sister's dance concert he was quite taken by it and decided he'd like to do some dance. Huw started with Hip Hop and with a
The family spoke to NPDA principal Michelle Buckley who suggested Huw join in his sister's class. He towered over the young girls. "I came out of it and went no I won't be doing that again," he said. But another student, Reuben, who was Huw' s age, suggested he join his class, and see what happened. "They were teenagers and had all been dancing since they were about six," Kylie said. "It was sink or swim. He didn't know the technical terms, how to use his muscles. The language was all French. He didn't
know any of it." But Reuben, who is now at the Elmshurst Ballet School in Birmingham, helped Huw learn and was pleased to have another boy in the class. "He'd stand in the back of the class with me and teach me stuff," Huw said. "For the first year I was looking at Reuben's feet to see what to do." By then there were four boys in the class and it was decided to hold an all boys class. They learnt Cossack dance which proved to be "awesome" and built up their strength, and they worked on their technique.

group entered the Sunshine Coast Festival of Dance which attracts about 100 schools. "We didn't really know what we were doing," Huw said, but after the first round they were called back for a second one. Having noticed a very large trophy they were surprised when at the end of the event it was awarded to them. After the festival Huw said he'd like to try ballet. His younger sister, Piper, who was about eight at the time was taking lessons at the Noosa Professional Dance Academy (NPDA).

Huw at NPDA At the NPDA annual concert, academy teacher Karen Donovan, who has danced with companies around the world including the Royal Ballet School in London, saw Huw dance and asked why he was not in the full time program. "We didn't agree with it," Kylie said. "We thought it was pie in the sky stuff. We wanted him to stay at school." Kylie wanted some advice and phoned an old friend, Trevor Green, who started dancing with the Queensland Ballet Company at 15 and has performed and choreographed across the world. "As it turned out Trevor Green was good friends with Karen. We had a long chat and Karen said what if he stays at school and comes and does my classes two days a week," Kylie said. Huw gained permission from his school, St Teresa's Catholic College, and 12 months on his dancing had progressed to "another level altogether". At the next concert freelance ballet teacher Wim Broeckx saw Huw dance and told him, "now it's time to dance with me". "I'd love to but my mum wouldn't," Huw told him. The Belgian-born Wim rose to principal dancer with the Dutch National Ballet before becoming artistic president of the Prix de Lausanne International Ballet Competition. He moved to the Gold Coast in 2012 and now works at various
professional dance companies including NPDA. "Wim tapped me on the shoulder," Kylie said. "I had to have another meeting with the school. We said (to Huw) if your school work suffers it'll have to stop. Last year he was dancing about 18-19 hours a week. We went from saying all that matters is your education to all that matters is dance." Huw decided last year in Year 12 he wanted to make dance his future. "We talked a lot with Karen, asking what we should do, how do we approach this," Kylie said. They started making lists of where to audition and Huw started auditioning. Sydney didn't go too good. "He was so disheartened," Kylie said. "But he soon realised what he didn't know." Then Huw gained an offer for 2019 with the Australian Conservatoire of Ballet in Victoria. "That was the first - then he knew he could do this. It raised his confidence no end." He auditioned for Queensland Ballet and that failed. Then the New Zealand School of Dance attached to the New Zealand Royal Ballet offered him a place. "I was in class watching YouTube when I got an email from the New Zealand School of Dance," Huw said. "I opened it - it said congratulations on your place. I nearly put
my hand through my Mac." Then Huw received another offer from the Tanya Pearson Classical Coaching Academy in Sydney. "We sat down with Wim and Karen," Kylie said. "They said if he truly wants to be a ballet dancer he needs to be at a school attached to a company." New Zealand had that and quite a reputation for looking after their students and it's known to be a destination for directors looking for dancers. It means going to live at the school in Wellington, something Huw predicts will be "quite wonderful" though he will miss Noosa. Kylie wonders how with one brother in motorsports and another a stockbroker Huw became so driven to dance. "He's so passionate about it," Kylie said. "I find him eating weetbix and watching ballet on his iphone," she said. "You can hear the music." Huw has been working at his parent's business, PC Used Cars and Mechanical, in Noosaville to help save for his ballet expenses and will leave next week for New Zealand. His aim for the future is to be principal dancer at a company in Europe but for now "to be the best I can be and see how it works out". "It's up to him to keep it going and he will," Kylie said. "I don't have any doubts."●

THE BOLTON REPORT
SANDY BOLTON, NOOSA MP
THREE RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR Christmas was not only festive, with plenty of reasons to celebrate, it also demonstrated how Facebook (FB) has changed our world, both positively and at times negatively. Even though I had my MP hat off and my 'crazy granny' cap on, I used the week as opportunity to read posts that were not work related or 'tagged'. The majority were inspirational, useful and incredibly helpful in 'spreading word' quickly, connecting friends, addressing concerns and sharing those special moments and achievements! However, sadly a couple were highly inappropriate, highlighting that there are still some FB users who are unaware that they may actually be committing offences by posting or sharing these defamatory posts. Also that by 'liking' and commentating in the affirmative, users are supporting a form of abuse and bullying. #notnownotever should become very much part of everyone's FB commitment, including moderators and owners of sites. So, for resolution Number 1 - Commit to not being a 'carrier' of hurt and mayhem in our community. Instead, use the appropriate channels and processes if you have an issue with someone, whether it be personal or business related. The MP website has the many different avenues available, or just give the office a call. Be the change you wish to see! Next resolution? Last year as part of a trial to utilise MP time more effectively and increase knowledge in our community,
we hosted the Noosa 360 site. This was to provide essential information on current issues, and create a 'bank' that residents could easily refer to when they had a concern to minimise their time spent in researching, as well for our office responding to 'same topic' emails, posts and threads multiple times across multiple timeframes! So for New Year (NY) resolution number 2 - Build on your knowledge in multiple
areas by jumping on '360' before posting an outrage on Facebook or in media, or give me a call or email. An example was the 'Container for Change' issue over the Christmas break, which saw many, many hours spent in response replication versus these resources being better utilised in the resolution. Remember, it is all of us as taxpayers who are funding these types of inefficiencies. And lastly, resolution number 3!
I can understand why many people ignore surveys, and yes, I have been guilty of this in the past. However, for this MP, in assessing every method available to capture your thoughts on issues, priorities and concerns, I need your input. So far, from a post box mailout to 15,000 households, FB notifications, media, emails and drops to hubs, we have so far had only just over 500 responders. Depending how I look at this it could be a positive in that you are happy with decisions being made on your behalf, or a negative, in that you did not know about it for some reason, or perhaps may not care? So for number 3, please become part of the vibrancy of the 'collective voice' and contribute to the now and the future by jumping online at www.sandybolton.com/ yoursay. Every comment and viewpoint is read and collated, yes by yours truly at the 'midnight hour', and as I have no way of visiting everyone for a coffee, this is the best way to have that chat!. Diversity of thought is essential, forming part of the decision making process in Parliament, as well assisting in prioritising research and advocacy in 2019. From myself, Lisa and Brett, may 2019 be all that you could wish for, and that any resolutions you have become commitments. We are very excited about the year ahead and what we can achieve together! ● Sandy

NEWS
WOMEN LEAD, BUSINESS FOLLOWS Significant evidence across the globe is demonstrating positive impacts on company performance with greater female representation in senior leadership, a report by the Australian Government's Workplace Gender Equality Agency has found. However, The Business Case For Gender Equality report says that while Australian companies are making increasing efforts to drive gender equality across all industries, women remain under represented at every stage of the career pipeline in Australia. They make up just one quarter of executive roles and the annual growth rate is slow at just 2.8 percent. Allister Logan, Training and Development lead for empowerment program, Women in Commsec, says Commsec is working to
turn this around through strategies including empowerment of female staff at all levels, encouraging women to back themselves and lead in an authentic and feminine way, and providing structures and guidance for male staff around how to better engage with and support female colleagues. "We've found men have been quite open to this but they just don't necessarily know how", Allister said. Allister is speaking at When Sleeping Women Wake, Mountains Move Community Leadership Conference at The J, Noosa on Wednesday March 6 as part of the WINDO International Women's Week Festival. UNITED FRONT HALTS MINE A united stance from advocacy groups including Cooran Earth Rights, Noosa Councillors and the community was the impetus behind the State Government decision not to renew a mining exploration permit that encroached on the northern part of Noosa Shire. Noosa MP Sandy Bolton said it was this clear message she delivered to Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Minister Anthony Lynham who "not only listened to the rationale put forward regarding the negative impacts to our environment, iconic tourism status and economy, but also how it would create even further hardships in terms of loss of future opportunities in diversifying our economy". "The collective voice is very powerful, and this has been a prime example of how good, knowledgeable advocacy without the 'soap boxing' or 'fear mongering', can deliver the outcomes that Noosa seeks for its future," she said. Last year Council unanimously adopted a position opposing coal and coal seam gas exploration and mining in the Shire.
Mayor Tony Wellington wrote to Minister Lynham to ask that the State consider Council's position when assessing any request to extend the EPBC2556 mining exploration permit. "Coal exploration, coal mining, coal seam gas exploration and coal seam gas production are not compatible with Noosa's natural environment and lifestyle," Cr Wellington said. "Such activities are also in conflict with Noosa Shire's designation as a Priority Living Area under the Regional Planning Interests Act." ●

KAYAKERS DIP AN OAR INTO KOALA CONSERVATION Boreen Point tourist operator Kanu Kapers Australia has partnered with conservation group Queensland Koala Crusaders to reduce their carbon footprint and increase koala habitat. Kanu Kapers owners Vivienne Golding, a world champion kayaker, and partner Kym McGregor provide kayak tours in the Noosa Everglades and were recent winners of the Green Award for Ecotourism in the 2018 Adventure Tourism Awards Australia and New Zealand. Kym said their aim was to make their business completely carbon neutral. "The only carbon issue is our client's car journey to the tour," Kym said. "To offset this we ask our clients to make a donation and we are granting 100 per cent of the donations to our partner. All money donated to the Koala Crusaders is used for
the wildlife corridors and safe havens they are creating to protect koalas in this area. Every $7 donated allows the Koala Crusaders to plant one tree." Kym said their clients had been so generous they had already filled a tin to present to the Koala Crusaders."Both Vivienne and I are passionate about helping create safe habitat for our Australian icon, the koala," she said. Queensland Koala Crusaders are delighted with the partnership and praised the efforts of Kanu Kapers. "Their initiative is a model of what can be done locally to make a difference for the koala and the thousand other species that live under their umbrella as well as ourselves," a spokeswoman said. RON LANE’S PEOPLE
RON LANE
TEAMWORK IS A LESSON LEARNT Every year the Sunshine Coast Branch of Surf Life Saving conducts an annual training camp for members in the u/14 and u/15s age group. Known as participants, for the three day camp, these age groups come under the watchful eye of team leaders: older members from various clubs. When it was first introduced 15 years ago it was known as Camp Survival, but after three years, the Australian Defense Force became involved both as a sponsor and a supplier of mentors. As a sign of gratitude and respect the organisers changed the name to Camp Commando. Happy to relate it has become an outstanding success. Under the organization of Aleeshia Chick and her support team this group of highly dedicated workers drew up a program that covered all aspects vital in training the lifesavers of tomorrow; above all a program that encourages them to speak up and raise questions. With visitations to all our beaches on a massive increase, necessary steps to ensure that our clubs maintain not only their membership, but also a high standard of training, is essential. With this being of the utmost importance Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads were heavily involved; Sunshine sending 5 participants and Noosa 5 leaders and 8 participants. For Noosa the 5 team Leaders were Maggie Glassock, Lilly Tindall, Harry Glassock, Jeda Hutchison and Mieka Davis. For Harry Glassock aged 19 it was his sixth camp; having attended three as a participant and now three as a leader. "We are teaching them to communicate with others but most important encouraging them to stick with their clubs and become long serving
Learning to work as a team.
patrolling members of the Red and Yellow Army," he said. For participant Scarlett Olver of Sunshine, who at 13 is a year 8 student at Matthew Flinders Anglican College, the camp gave her the chance to mix and meet people from other clubs. "The camp teachers us we will always have friends, to work together and also push each other as a team," she said. Amongst events on the program were
activities conducted by Army Reserve Personal; this again emphasised teamwork and above all the importance to "Never Quit." It is to be hoped that when club officials receive reports regarding Camp Commando they have the respect to not only listen but also act on suggestions. Their involvement will encourage young people to become our lifesavers of tomorrow. And as one young lady from Mudjimba said, "These camps must be continued." ●
When someone's counting on you, never quit.
NEWS NEW MAN AT THE HELM
SCOOTER FINDS THE WAY
BY MARGARET MACCOLL
When Debra Wilson, a part owner of a real estate company, was asked to sell a unit recently the owner pointed out a motorised wheelchair and said, you can have it if you know someone who is in need of one. Debra said she had no one in mind, but was sure her father, Noosa Vietnam Vetarans Association (NVVA) social officer and committee member Bruce Wilson would, and she was right. The Tewantin/Noosa Sub Branch member and Director of the Board for the RSL Club immediately accepted the offer on behalf of the NVVA. The task then began to identify a needy recipient or a worthy member of the local community. RSL Welfare officers were consulted as well as long standing members of the Sub Branch. Eventually, one lady stood out above all the rest. And on Thursday 17 January Olive Donaldson was presented with the scooter and Bruce outlined some of the reasons for her selection. Olive was one of the club's founding members without whom the club would not exist. She has been an RSL Club member since its formation and served two terms as club board member. She joined the Woman's Auxiliary in
Noosa Coast Guard has a new commander in Ian Hutchings who took charge a couple of weeks ago. A master mariner with 13 years working in the British Merchant Navy Ian brings a wealth of experience to the role. Ian spent a large part of his life on the sea. In addition to his navy life Ian spent 12 years as a supervisor on an oil and gas platform in the North Sea. But after the platform he headed for land and a completely new career. Ian moved into IT and for 15 year worked as an IT consultant in Houston in the US. "It was a bit of a shock but it was interesting work," he said. Over his working life Ian and his wife left their home in England and lived in cities across the globe. About five years ago they moved to Noosa but it wasn't their first trip to the Sunshine Coast. For 20 to 30 years they'd been travelling to the region on holiday and to visit Ian's brother. "I thought this is a nice part of the world, bought a house and settled down," he said. Then Ian looked around for something to do and found the Coast Guard. "I came up to Noosa and retired and decided I needed to do something with my 16 NOOSA TODAY

Olive Donaldson tries out her new scooter with Bruce Wilson. 1974 and was its first president, first life member and its patron. Olive is a member of the Laurel Ladies and volunteered to serve in the WRAAF during the Korean War. Olive's father was the first Sub Branch president in 1959 and the first life member. In addition Olive volunteers in the information office and is an active member of the CWA. Olive said she was honoured to accept the scooter. "As many of you would know, I walk to the RSL almost every week day, and as Bruce so kindly put it, I am not getting any younger, my feet are getting wearier and my back is aching more," she said. ● noosatoday.com.au

LETTERS ROLE OF GOVERNMENT No sniping. Which Good Guv’mint Minister said, “I’ve always seen parliament as a disadvantage for sitting governments”? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach
MONEY FOR WHAT? Well, slap my ass, shut me up, and take my money! NSC you had me at 'oyster shells’! But hang on ... how much is it gonna cost us? What ...$1.2 mill? Now THAT’S a big pineapple shoved up my 'proverbial’. Too big, in my humble opinion. But hang on ... is this just about bags of old oyster shells, or is there something else going on? Tony and crew...why such an urgency to do this deal with the TNC without due diligence re: public consultation, expert local family and river-user input? This whole episode in the fight for control of the Noosa River smacks of deals with vested interests, including the NPA and the NBRF, who tend to benefit again from our tax dollars spent behind “closed doors“. And the new player in this game is from Arlington, Virginia. Now why can’t our local fishing families provide the same info needed to improve the quality of our river? Why Tony Wellington, why? And where is the extra $1.2 mill coming from? And who is getting out $1.2 mill in expertise that we as locals can’t already give for free? Answers, Tony ... answers please. M. Griffin, Tewantin
TAFE FINANCES Dom Massoni (NT 17/1) seeks to fabricate supposed inconsistencies in my approach to the Tewantin TAFE facility. He claims that in September I spoke out against the TAFE purchase. At the time, I did point out a range of issues surrounding the purchase decision, including ongoing costs should the facility fail to generate an appropriate return income. I did so in order to highlight that the maintenance and depreciation costs needed to be factored in to any financial case. Notably, I also moved the successful motion on 31 August to continue negotiations with the state over the purchase. So clearly I wasn’t opposed to council buying it. Mr Massoni also misquotes me with regards to the potential costs to ratepayers. At the time, I clearly said that, depending on the use scenario, costs could be as much as $250 to $300 for each ratepayer spread over a 10-year period. That is between $25 and $30 per year. I did not say, as Mr Massoni asserts,
Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au
that it would cost each ratepayer between $250 and $300 per year. Council is currently in a position to purchase the TAFE site at a price below market valuation. The intention is to ensure that any use or development of the site both benefits the community and is not an ongoing drain on finances. Tony Wellington, Noosa Mayor
AUSTRALIA DAY SADNESS It was sad to see the disunity on Australia Day by “The Invasion Day Rally” with the chanting “always was and always will be Aboriginal land” that echoed down the length of the arch. I personally feel changing the date of Australia Day will not bring reconciliation. It is the emotional attitude that is tied to the First Fleet that arrived in Sydney Cove and raised the union flag in 1788. Yes, there was genocide and atrocities after the arrival of the First Fleet - these tragedies should not have happened. Most Australians are ashamed of our past history. 230 years on this generation of Australians should not be made to feel guilty for the sins of the past. Ten years ago our then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made a public statement in saying “sorry” to the Aboriginal people, acknowledging the wrong to those who had suffered as the stolen generation. It does not seem to matter how many times we have asked for forgiveness after acknowledging the wrongs of the past. The Aboriginal people have never reciprocated with the healing word of forgiveness in response to our apology. No healing or reconciliation can come unless both sides respond and make peace. The Aboriginals have an ancient tribal ritual where two tribes who have a grievance against one another come together and write their grievances on different ends of a log. They then bury the log and never bring up their grievances again. It would be wonderful if we could use this ancient Aboriginal ritual in a reconciliation day that would embrace the whole community in a healing from the past wrongs. This could be a new start in finding reconciliation, unity, a relationship with a future. In the Lord’s Prayer it says, “forgive those who sin against us”. To those who have practised this truth they have found healing. We will always acknowledge the Aboriginal people as being the first people of this land. We appreciate the Aboriginal culture, their amazing art, music and dance. We are proud to see their native language are being preserved. Let Australia Day be one. Margaret Inglis, Belrose.

THE SCIENCE IS IN
TIME TO ACT
If J. Mikkelsen or J. Turner or C. Bond were simply arguing that the sky is not blue, or that the Earth is flat, or that Elvis is still alive, we could all chuckle and ignore the idiocy. But when the idiocy is actually attacking science with an intent to convince non-scientifically literate people that their conspiracy theories regarding global warming have merit, one must respond with some intention. NT headlined J Mikkelsen’s letter (17/01) “Climate Debate Hots Up”, as if this issue really is debatable. It was debated in the scientific literature decades ago when evidence was not so overwhelming but we can be sure that if there was some good evidence that something other than CO2 was causing the Earth’s temperature to continue to climb, the fossil fuel companies would certainly be thrusting that into their advertisements instead of using a soppy commercial trying to convince us there is such a thing a clean coal. The science proffered by Mikkelsen and Turner is either false and inadmissible or true and irrelevant. For Turner to say that infra-red is different to heat is to misunderstand all of the science on global warming. Mikkelsen joyfully claims that the Earth is greening because of the increase in CO2. He is correct but the greening is not in itself a good thing. For one, it is only likely to be short term, as stated in the same article that Mr M referenced. Second, the same article says that CO2 is causing global warming and that is not good. Finally, Mr M says that water vapour is a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. This is true but ignores completely the fact that the amount of CO2 is increasing due to the burning of fossil fuels and that increase is the cause of the increased global temperatures. The concentrations of water vapor and CO2 in the atmosphere before the industrial revolution were constant. Though the temperature of the Earth has risen and fallen with some regularity of the past million years, the warming occurring over the past 200 years is much faster than the warming experienced following other ice ages. When non-scientists attack scientists as being incorrect, you have to be very suspicious of the non-scientists’ motives, and I am. We are wasting time. The science is in. The Earth is warming and we are facing very dangerous conditions within our life times if we don’t act now. Steve Hall, Cooroy
Al Gore claimed in his book, “An Inconvenient Truth”, that man’s industrial activities are the cause of CO2 emissions, causing global warming. A more appropriate title would have been “A Convenient Untruth”. I support the views of John Turner (NT 17/1) and John Mikkelsen (NT 17/1) and would like to add value to same. Recent research published by Brown University (USA) continues to improve on the Milankovitch Cycles developed by Miludin Milankovitch in the 1930s that identified three variations in Earth’s orbit around the sun. It is the variations in the tilt of Earth’s axis, its distance from the sun, and the precession of Earth’s seasonal exposure to the sun which exposes the Earth’s polar regions to the sun over time. Climate is modified by these changes in solar radiation along with lesser variables including sunspot cycles. Our Earth is currently at a 23 degree tilt causing increased exposure of our polar regions, melting their sea ice and warming the oceans which in turn releases CO2. At this present time, the glacial ice melts are occurring at an alarming rate, with equally alarming releases of CO2. Man’s activity is responsible for less than half a percent of CO2 emissions. Some anthropogenic effects cannot be ignored in the short term. In the long term, the earth’s orbit will take us into a cooling period around 2050. Until then, will the quality of water in our seas and in our waterways be in a fit state to sustain quality of life? If we can accept that CO2 is a result of global warming, not the cause, then energy efficient industries should be supported and research grants, such as reef funding projects, would focus on incubating corals that can grow in warmer waters and assist the reef to come south from Heron Island. We need water quality monitoring through new technologies and value our river systems. Australia should reduce water hungry mining and crops to sustain our environment and owner operated farms whose livelihoods are at risk. The Darling-Murray River System is a scathing example of mismanagement. Action is not a word that politicians and bureaucrats enjoy, for they can be held accountable. Hence hiding behind years of research is safe. It is time to fund innovation and build systems to cope with global change. Janet Gibson, Noosaville noosatoday.com.au

AC/DC JUST LIKE THE REAL THING Calling all ACCA DACCA fans - don't miss the Australian AC/DC Show at The Noosa Heads Surf Club on Saturday 2 February for a massive two hour set. The event will take you on a journey from the humble beginnings of the legendary band through to the Bon Scott era and the fallout from his death, through to the many highlights with Brian Johnson at the helm. The band succeeds where others have failed through the use of visual mediums such as film clips, interviews, rare photographs and combines them with an electric live performance. Officially launched in 1990 the tribute band is performing as strong as ever with the original lead singer, Alfi Rocker who does an incredible job singing in the styles of both legendary singers Bon Scott and
Brian Johnson. While the lead guitarist plays the role of a young and wild schoolboy, Angus, perfectly. The band always strives to deliver the next best thing to an actual AC/DC concert in sound and vision. Come along and rock out to songs from each album. It will take you back to the days when this cheeky group of Aussie underdogs defied all odds to reach the summit of rock and roll. ACCA DACCA - The Australian AC/ DC Show will perform at Noosa Heads Surf Club on Saturday 2 February from 8.30pm and it's free. MURDER ON THE REEF AT THE J - PORTRAIT OF DANGER AT SEA Great Barrier Reef 's port of Gladstone in 2011. Since this time the reef has suffered unprecedented back-to-back bleaching events which have killed half of the corals. This is due to the warming oceans caused by climate change. The collapse of an entire ecosystem is imminent unless action is taken." According to Dr Dobrovolsky, the next impending reef disaster will be on a much larger scale due to the predicted global increase in the rate of bleaching events."I
would like people to walk away after watching the documentary understanding the reef is affected so much that without human intervention it will die," he said. The film reveals an underlying lack of co-operation between government, marine research scientists, activists, politicians, indigenous leaders and the general public as being a core factor in the rapid decline of the reef 's health. "Despite repeated warnings by Australian scientists that the reef is in 'grave danger',

TRUE-BLUE LAMINGTON There's nothing more Australian in Queensland than the lamington, named after the Governor of Queensland Lord Lamington and supposedly created by mistake when the governor's maid dropped a sponge in chocolate and he suggested covering it in coconut to make it less sticky to hold. Here is the Country Women's Association (CWA) recipe. INGREDIENTS ¡ 3 eggs ¡ 1/2 cup butter ¡ 1/2 cup castor sugar ¡ 1 teaspoon vanilla essence ¡ 1 cup self-raising flour 1/2 cup milk METHOD Beat the eggs well, gradually adding the sugar until dissolved. Add the milk and vanilla essence and then stir in the self raising flour and whip the butter into the mixture. Pour the mixture into a cake tin or lamington baking dish and bake in a moderate oven of 180 degrees Celsius for 35 minutes. Allow the cake to cool for at least 10 minutes and then stand for 24 hours preferably in the refrigerator, before applying the icing. THE CHOCOLATE ICING ¡ 4 cups icing sugar ¡ 1/3 cup cocoa ¡ 2 tablespoons butter ¡ 1/2 cup milk ¡ 4 tablespoons boiling water ¡ 3 cups desiccated coconut METHOD Stir the cocoa and icing sugar vigorously in a large bowl, adding the milk, butter and boiling water, warming the chocolate mixture over a very low heat until it has a smooth creamy texture. Cut the sponge cake into equal squares about 5cm x 5cm and, using a fork or thin skewer, dip each piece into the chocolate mixture ensuring that the mixture is liberally and evenly applied. Dip each piece into the desiccated coconut, allowing the lamingtons to cool on a wire tray for several hours.

JACK AN AWARD WINNING PLAYER St Teresa's student Jack Caspers, 13, has become the first Sunshine Coast to receive the Shane Watson award after being selected to represent the Sunshine Coast Scorchers in the Les Kinnane Memorial Cricket Shield held this month in Ipswich. The Sunshine Coast Scorchers picked up silver going down to Brisbane North in the finals after a hot and frenetic week of cricket. Jack was awarded the 2019 Championship player and picked up the Shane Watson All rounder award. This award is given to the player who excels in all facets of the game throughout the whole carnival. Jack's highest batting score was 42 not out and he made a total of 108 runs. He took 8 wickets, 2 caught and bowled and a magnificent direct hit for a run out. Jack had a fantastic time and hopes his
form continues for his current Under 14's Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club side. Jack only took up the sport at the age of ten and this is only his third season of summer cricket. Jack plays AFL for the Noosa Tigers in the winter season, certainly a naturally talented sportsperson! â—?

REMEDIAL MASSAGE & ENERGY HEALING Clint Smith has been a successful Remedial Therapeutic Masseur based in Noosa for over 20 years. He has worked at the Hyatt Coolum Resort, with Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Sports Physio Clinics. Invited and worked for many elite athlete groups i.e. Australian Wallabies, Olympic and Paralympic Swimmers. In more recent years Clint has now included more subtle styles of treatment. He is a gifted practitioner in addressing “challenges we might encounter, tightness in necks, shoulders, lower back/hip pain are common issues. As well as massage, Clint offers the ‘fine tuning’ of Energy Healing, Orion /Chiron Healing, Reiki, and Chakra balancing. Those familiar with the benefits of massage on the physical and mental space can add to that feeling of ‘surrender’. Energy Healing can increase the benefit of massage, by helping the patient acknowledge the tension / stress on a deeper level, often releasing its ‘hold’. Sessions can be tailored to suit each individual’s needs. Often stress and anxiety become a physical tension within the muscular system. Modern New Age writers, scientists, practitioners, even mystics from the past acknowledge stress and tension become almost infused within our cells / physical body. The human body will restore itself more often than not, a good practitioner just helps that process.

SENIOR MENS A good weekend for the club with 3 wins in men's senior grades with first grade all but assured of a one day final spot for the first time since 1996, and 4th grade currently 2nd with one round of one day games still to play. 1st Grade hosted Yandina on Saturday, got off to a steady start batting after winning the toss. The early loss of Troy Dennien for 14, saw Samadhi Baker and Ben Gear reach 73 off 20 and start lifting the run rate to set up a big score with a 115 run partnership before Baker was out for 57. 150 off 34 and a couple of wickets saw Andrew Kratzman join Gear and put on a quick fire 92 before Gear fell on 117 off 103 balls. Kratzman carried on to finish 64 no off 41 deliveries with the total reaching 6/292 with 219 coming from the last 30 and 111 coming from the last 10. Yandina was all out 120 from 38 overs to finish with 2 bonus points and with other results favouring, Tewantin look to be clear in 2nd spot and assured of a place in the one day final. 2nd Grade made the trip to Burpengary to keep the momentum going and create some breathing room from 4th position but were let down in the field with dropped catches inaccurate runout attempts costing valuable runs. Heading out to bat the total seemed within reach, but the loss of early wickets didn't help to capitalise on some poor bowling and the team finished 21 short

of the total.3rds were at home for the local derby against Cooroy. A good win to put the team back into contention for the 2 day finals race. 4ths were put in to bat against Palmwoods Black and started steadily to be 1/87 at drinks before a mini collapse with 3 wickets in one over and a couple of cheap wickets to follow with 1/108 in the 26th becoming 6/143 in the 31st. Some steady batting at the finish saw the score climb to a very defendable 192 off the 40 overs. Still in the hunt on equal 2nd position in the one day comp with one round to play and holding down 2nd overall.
SENIOR LADIES Lightning won the toss today and batted against Wamuran-Stanley River. An early wicket gave some confidence to the opposition, until a great partnership between Kat and Lily saw them scoring at over a run a ball. Arishna 5 from 5 and Gillian partnered to end the last few balls each making their first runs with Lightning finishing on 173 for their 20 overs. Wamuran only managed to score 39, to give Lightning a solid victory. A great game by all and some impressive first experiences. Thunder were at home against top of the table Buderim. Despite best efforts in the field, Thunder were unable to break a solid Buderim 72 run partnership with the total reached in the 15th over. â—?

SPINNERS SUCCESS ON AND OFF THE COURT The 13th annual Suncoast Spinners tournament wrapped up last week with Queensland local team Feed the Heat narrowing out New Zealand club team Canterbury in an international clash. The tournament saw nail biting games played across three divisions. For many premier grade players, the tournament was an opportunity to return to the Sunshine Coast elite competition to improve their form leading into international and national competitions for 2019. On the courts beside these elite games were many basketballers in the B grade competition, who were playing their first ever tournament. Noosa MP Sandy Bolton was on the sidelines cheering on at her first view of wheelchair basketball. She said she was thrilled to be courtside to cheer on our Suncoast Spinners and meet inspirational players including our very own player Rohan McDonald and former Australian women's wheelchair basketball captain Bridie Keen.
Noosa Seahorse Nippers fundaiser Little Jo Power who was introduced to Suncoast Spinners at a cheque presentation at the Tewantin RSL last December, was part of a fundraising team that raised $6,000 to purchase Rohan a customized sports wheelchair for his basketball pursuits. Little Jo has since joined the Suncoast Spinners fundraising team which raised at record amount with its raffle at the tournament thanks to Little Jo's enthusiasm and energy driving ticket sales through the roof. â—?

THE IMPORTANCE OF FIRST AID It has been a long time coming but at last more respect in the competition arena is being shown to First Aid, Patrol Competition and Champion Life Saver events. One only has to look at the name to understand that these events are the core of our existence; it is what we do on our beaches. At the recent Sunshine Coast Branch Surf Rescue Championships Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads were again amongst the best. This is a continuation of a very high standard that has been created by such coaches as the Redwood family in Sunshine and Lenore Grice at Noosa. Both named will tell you that there are other coaches on the panels and rightly so, but it is the achievements of these two that has raised the bar for others to reach; and this they are doing. In the Patrol Competition and Champion Life Saver Events the Sunshine team came home with a total of 4 gold and 3 silver medals; the gold being for the Champion Lifesaver Female u/15 and u/17 and Masters Female and the u/15 Patrol Competition; and the silver for the u/14, u/15Champion Lifesaver Female and the u/15 Champion Male. To take the gold in the u/15 Patrol Competition is indeed very prestigious as this is a team event and one of the most important. Their performance saw Sunshine finish 3rd overall a really great performance. The Champion Patrol and Champion
Jo Redwood. Lifesaver are two events in which this club has, over the years excelled; something in which this small club should take pride. For Noosa they also performed well with their most outstanding results being yet again in the field of First Aid Competition. In this they won4 gold medals the u/15, u/17u/19 and the Open, with the 17, 19
Photo: Dave Gleeson, Surfshots. and Open being won by the same team of LillyTindall and Lara Porter. This was indeed an outstanding effort and the first time that a club has won three age groups using the same team. To finish the First Aid they also took the silver in the u/15.Then in the prestigious Patrol Competition Noosa took gold in the u/17catogery.
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
Apart from winning medals in these core events they have another common factor, both clubs have great family and club support. On Saturday afternoon on Noosa West Beach, a young girl received a broken nose and severe injuries to her cheek bones while surfing and was treated by Patrol 4.before being handed over to Paramedics. This once again highlights the importance of advanced First Training for our lifesavers; unheralded in competition but absolutely vital on patrol. On the same weekend at Currumbin in the Ocean 6 Carnival, which consisted of Iron Man, Iron Woman, Open Surf Race, Taplin and Board Relays, Sunshine again performed well winning I gold,1silver and 2 bronze; the gold being for the/17 Taplin Relay. At Ocean 6 Lana Rogers won the bronze medal in the Open Surf race. This was a follow on from her Gold medal at the Coolum Nutri Grain. "I have always loved swimming and this is my strong leg in the Iron Woman events," she said. In the surf board riding Noosa came home with 3gold medals 3silver and1 bronze a great performance. At the state surf boat selection trials at Tugun, Noosa missed selection in the team when they recorded several second place finishers. "Unfortunately you have to win in the trials to gain selection second places leaves you out," said boat captain Anthony Fox. "However it was great experience for our young crews so we are happy" â—?

LIGHT WINDS PRODUCE THE GOODS AS WEATHER BREAKS Finally the weather has broken and we have a rapidly fading easterly swell combined with light north easterly winds which has seen everyone who owns a boat head out after the schools of pelagic fish. With the recent drop in swell the bar crossing has been far easier this week especially toward the weekend. Many anglers have had the chance to get amongst it and catches of mackerel have been reported with some very sizable Spanish caught. Now is the time to use pilchard floaters and slow trolled dead baits around Sunshine reef and Jew Shoal. If In a kayak then launching from Noosa main beach and taking a short paddle over to Jew Shoal is worth a look as is heading toward Halls reef. Be sure to have a Spaniard Special out the back and rig up a big bait for the big fish. Further out to Sunshine Reef we have seen some very nice catches of coral trout, pearl perch, various cod species and the occasional kingfish. Dropping floated pilchards on gang hooks is the best way to find other mid water species including bigger snapper, cobia and longtail tuna. Crossing the bar has been a lot easier and the local reefs have been fishing well. Out wide North Reef has had a great mix of reef fish and pelagic's including the main target, Spanish mackerel. Also in the mix are smaller cobia, sweetlip, pearl perch and longtail tuna. The surf fishing has been a little quiet with the clear waters, but there are some quality gutters up and down the coast. The better times to fish are low light but during 32 NOOSA TODAY

the daytime light rigs and beach worms are the go for whiting, bream, dart and flathead. In the river the Dog beach, River mouth and along Gympie Terrace have seen some quality flathead caught. If you want to target one of the larger fish then live baits are the best. If able to fish at night then try larger hardbodies to attract the attention of the bigger fish including mangrove jacks. during the early mornings so take a walk around Woods Bay, Munna Bridge and along Gympie Terrace. Surface walkers and smaller poppers are great ways to trigger a bite when cast into a feeding pack of fish. If using soft plastics then keep your baits to 2-3 inches in size and use lighter jigheads to keep a natural action. Borumba and Lake MacDonald have been providing anglers with quality Saratoga
and bass, especially for those anglers using surface and suspending lures. No matter where you fish try to take shelter from the northerly winds during the last and first light times for the best results. Frog and cicada style lures are effective this time of year as they are both very active so be sure to have a few in your tackle box. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—? noosatoday.com.au

BACK TO THE FUTURE "Welcome to 1975," said the esteemed photojournalist John Ogden, as we shared a man-hug in the relative calm and cool of the lobby of the community centre at Avalon Beach the other night. Oggy pointed inside an adjacent function room where anyone who was anyone in Sydney's northern beaches counterculture all those years ago was clustered in the hot, still evening, tossing back libations like there was no tomorrow, which, in many cases, was uncomfortably close to the truth. The reason for the liquid-fueled excitement was the return of Captain Goodvibes, which, in some circles, is bigger than the Second Coming. Well, maybe not exactly the return of the infamous cartoon Pig of Steel, but an exhibition of fine art by his creator Tony Edwards is a rare, maybe once-in-a-decade event, and the fossils had gathered at the fray. Who are these ancients coming at us arm akimbo? Could they be Peninsula artists Mick Glasheen and Bruce Goold? At a party for a Tony Edwards birthday back when we were young, Brucey stripped to his drawers and walked on his hands through a pile of broken glass before curling up and sleeping in it. I know because I had to pick the glass out of his back before driving him home the next morning. Bruce is now one of our best-loved linocut artists, and his bio film, Under The Lino, has screened at art houses around the world. And over here, chatting to Tracks alumni Geoff Watson and former supermodel Ali Newling, is the magazine's co-founder David Elfick. When I joined the Tracks crew in 1974, the magazine was still published in an old beach shack just over the hill at Whale Beach, and Dave kept an office there while he put the finishing touches on Crystal Voyager. Then he moved into an art deco building at Palm Beach, where he went on to help create such seminal Australian films as Newsfront and Starstruck. Out on the deck I bump into the elfin Marius Webb, who these days mostly resides in Italy but in 1975, in one of the few blots on a distinguished broadcasting career, gave Captain Goodvibes and me our own prime time chat show in his capacity as the founding director the ABC's rock radio station 2JJ. (Someone slipped a funny cigarette into the green room and we were taken off air before we got through our first show.) Meanwhile, Tony's art show was a sellout before we drank the bar dry, red spots
The Beacon Store at Palm Beach, from Tony Edwards’ brilliant new exhibition. everywhere, on the paintings as well as our faces. Yes, it was 1975 in there, and jeez it was fun to go back for a visit. We meet again Reunions are funny things: great anticipation and excitement tempered with fear of the unknown. What if we've got nothing in common, nothing to say? What if they're selling Amway or Watchtowers? What if he thinks Trump and ScoMo are merely misunderstood? So yeah, I approached a long-awaited surf date with an old partner in crime from school days with some slight trepidation, but very slight. We'd caught up briefly for the first time in nearly 50 years at a book launch of mine about 18 months ago, and despite having spent his entire working life as a schoolmaster, he still seemed to have the impish spark. We had a beer when I'd finished signing books and promised to catch up for a surf next time I was down his way. But then I never heard anything. Maybe he thought I was a wanker, pretending to be best mates with everyone with thirty bucks in their wallet. Wouldn't be the first. And then we connected. You're in the 'hood? Great. Should be waves Monday, we'll have a surf and a pub lunch. Gaz and his schooldays sweetheart
Great artists and old mates, Bruce Goold and Tony Edwards. Photo Oggy Marilyn (we were all in the same year) live on an especially beautiful stretch of the NSW south coast, and we found a playful A-frame peak with just a few on it, surfed our fill, cheering each other on, then repaired to pub on the water with ancient fishing photos on its walls. The beer was cold, the conversation lively. I loved these people all over again. Then a reporter from the Sydney Morning Herald interrupted, wanting a local to comment
Can’t get enough of that free wine! Photo Oggy on an issue involving a visit by ScoMo the previous day. Gaz gave him both barrels the PM, not the young reporter. I could have hugged him. In fact I did. ●

While your columnist was cruising on an empty beachie last week, at the other end of the south coast and the spectrum, little Tewantin ripper Lilliana Bowrey was whacking the lip hard and often, trying to take out the Under 14 Rip Curl GromSearch final in tricky conditions at Woonona. And boy she went close – missing out on the prestigious national title by less than a point to Victoria’s Jazz Wylie. Don’t worry, Lil, there’ll be plenty more finals for you, and you will take the big trophy home. Photo Surfing NSW

BECOME A DRAGON The Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club, based at the Eumundi Showgrounds, is looking forward to another season of safe, family oriented, fun-filled junior rugby. The club, which was formed in 2008, is confident of nominating at least five teams in the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby competition this year. These teams will be for under 6, under 7, under 8, under 9 and under 10, as well as a possible under 13 girls sevens team should there be the interest. Despite the dry summer so far, the fields are in immaculate condition and ready for the club's sign-ups on February 2 and 9. Prospective players who are unable to
attend these official sign up days still have the opportunity to register at the Dragons' training sessions which start on Thursday 14 February from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. This opportunity exists right up until the Easter holidays. "Anyone thinking of joining our club is most welcome. No previous experience is needed," President Doug Toms said. "We train all of our players so that they can enjoy the sport within a safe and supportive environment. Any children, girls as well as boys, born from 2014 to 2009, are guaranteed a season of rugby from March to end of August/start of September."
