Property Lift out
No more Purvies By Rowan Forster The Pakenham Hotel's impending redevelopment has been met with mixed reactions by the community, amid revelations the venue will be renamed "The Drake" and its cherished sports bar scrapped. Instead, the iconic Main Street watering hole will boast a dining room, bistro, private function room, lounge and courtyard. The floor plan suggests that the venue's licensees may be appealing to a new, more cultured demographic. In a statement, a spokesperson for the Pakenham Hotel said the refurbishment will bring the pub up to scratch with modern day expectations. "She's been a great pub for a very long time but the town has changed drastically over the past decade, so as a result, so must we," it read. "There'll be a strong emphasis on food and beverages in a comfortable, civilised environment. "As a part of the project, the hotel will be renamed The Drake Tavern. "This will assist us in alleviating the constant hotel name confusion in town and also provide a platform to commence the next chapter of the hotel's journey." The public bar has already ceased trading, with the refurbishment now underway. It is expected to be completed by May, 2019. In response, reveller Brian Forbes expressed his concerns with the bar being abolished. "I can't believe it looks like they won't have a TAB," he said. "The pub definitely needs a TAB as most guys like to head down of an afternoon and have a few bets and beers. "It would be extremely disappointing if you still can't do that." Many were also disappointed to see the pub's affectionate nickname, Purvies, seemingly dumped. "It'll be just like every other pub in Pakenham, a restaurant, and not an actual pub," Lauren Margaret said. "Taking out the bar will destroy so much history. "Doesn't look like there is anywhere for the locals and regulars to sit and have a drink together anymore - disappointing." Continued on page 2
