MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Warwick is rightfully known nationally as the 'Rose and Rodeo City' but locals sometimes lose sight of the fact we have a thriving cultural community here as well - and of course in Stanthorpe. The live music scene in particular is alive and kicking, despite going through phases over the years, and the 'Great Australian Bites' event last weekend was a showcase of some of our top home-grown talent. Likewise, it was great to catch up with the members of 'Witch Doctor', the latest musical outfit to form in Warwick, for this week's cover story (see pages 4 & 5). The band is made up of a number of well-known local faces and is sure to be in demand for private and public events large and small. Combined with community events like Jumpers and Jazz in July and the Stanthorpe Busking Championships our entertainment scene offers plenty of enjoyment for locals and visitors to the region, and a chance for our many talented locals to take to the stage. And don't forget that many of those who undertake the planning and running of cultural events across the region are volunteers and not-for-profits - we owe them a real debt of gratitude for their ongoing efforts. ANZ BANK CUTS SERVICES "Take your banking elsewhere" is the war-cry from Maranoa MP and Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud as the ANZ Bank this month pulled services - through its link with Australia Post - from 61 rural and remote communities. "I've had a couple in Chinchilla contact me, absolutely shattered that they've supported ANZ for 60 years and now their bank's going to abandon the town through its affiliation with Australia Post," Mr Littleproud said. "It's not just Chinchilla though, ANZ's this month pulled services from 61 rural and remote communities in my electorate from Crows Nest to Charleville, Warwick to

Winton and Dalby to Dirranbandi. "My advice in response to this callousness? "Take your business elsewhere because ANZ obviously doesn't care about country people who've supported it for decades as ANZ's decided to abandon bush communities and leave customers high-anddry." Mr Littleproud's spray at the major bank was in response to ANZ putting profits ahead of people by refusing to continue a partnership with Australia Post which enabled post offices to act as a mini bank branch, a service he said is vital to rural communities. "ANZ made a whopping $9.9 billion

profit last year and won't spend a measly $22 million to partner with Australia Post to guarantee local services in the bush - this appalling decision really shows it puts profits ahead of people," Mr Littleproud said. The Commonwealth Bank, NAB and Westpac have each agreed to pay $22 million to continue a partnership with Australia Post. ANZ will no longer offer its services through Australia Post in the following Southern Downs and nearby communities Allora, Ballandean, Dalveen, Goondiwindi, Inglewood, Killarney, Leyburn, Stanthorpe, Talwood, Texas, The Summit, Wallangarra, Warwick, Yangan and Yelarbon. ●

On what day and at what time did the overflow commence, if recorded? 2. Did the fault at the pump station trigger some kind of alert to council officers/workers and when it was it discovered and action taken to make it stop? 3. Correction #2 ... A story in last week's edition on the reception by Southern Downs councillors of the Granite Belt Community Association's de-amalgamation business case incorrectly stated an internal council review of the document could cost up to $40,000 in council staff time. A report to councillors at last week's general meeting stated that an external consultant's peer review of council officers' assessment of the business case "would be likely to cost approximately $40,000". The business case is currently with State Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe, who has the ability to refer it to the independent Local Government Change Commission for assessment. ●

The Southern Downs Regional Council says communities around region will benefit from new infrastructure projects with the council last week securing $1 million in drought relief funding from the Federal Government. The Federal Government's Drought Communities Programme (DCP) approved funding for all five of the drought relief projects SDRC applied for during the latest round of DCP funding. SDRC has allocated the funds towards the following projects ... · $150,000 for carting potable water to eligible rural property owners and occupiers not connected to the reticulated Council water supply · $200,000 for the Leyburn Auxiliary Water Treatment upgrade · $200,000 for sporting and community organisations to install or replace rainwater tanks and other water saving devices (Expressions of Interest close Monday, 25 February) · $250,000 for repairs and upgrades to eligible local community halls (Expressions of Interest close Monday 11 February) · $200,000 for 24-hour potable water dispensing stations around the region The DCP is intended by the Federal Government to fund infrastructure and drought relief projects that use local resources, businesses and suppliers to stimulate local community spending and provide longlasting benefits to the community and their agricultural industries. Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said the DCP funded projects will provide benefits across several sectors in the Southern Downs not only during the current drought but for future generations as well. "While these projects will help the region conserve and improve access to water, they will also benefit the economy and local community organisations," Cr Dobie said. · For more on SDRC's drought relief funding or for details on how to apply contact SDRC Development Assessment Coordinator Tonya Collier on 1300 697 372 or tonya. collier@sdrc.qld.gov.au. ●

Correction #1 ... A story in last week's edition on a sewage spill in the Condamine River shortly before Christmas last year incorrectly stated that warning signage was put in place by the Southern Downs Regional Council in Federation Park on Christmas Eve. Council staff installed the signage the previous Wednesday, 19 December, and released a statement about the sewage the following day, Thursday 20 December. The council has previously stated the incident was related to an Ergon power failure at the sewage pump station at the corner of Canning and Condamine Streets, outside the new Bunnings Warehouse, but has not stated when the power failure occurred. Observers have told the Free Times sewage entered the river via a stormwater drain near the pontoon in Federation Park and it remains unknown how this occurred, as the sewer and stormwater networks are separate.

ohn Kiss jokes about how he came to get a gig with the latest musical outfit to form together in Warwick - and it all happened in his GP's consulting room at the Condamine Medical Centre. Now-retired local trucking industry figure and erstwhile guitarist for legendary Warwick 1960's band the 'K-Dels', Graham 'Doc' White, had dropped by for his yearly medical about this time last year, and happened to mention he and a few other local musos

were putting a new band together. "I was preparing to give Graham an injection and he was blubbering and sobbing and carrying on - I've never seen a grown man behave like it," John deadpans. "I said, 'OK, look, I'll give this to you in tablet form if you'll let me be the drummer in your band. "And he quickly agreed." It turns out the popular Warwick medico was a drummer back in the day - while completing his medical internship at Royal Darwin Hospital in the 1960's he played on and off with the city's main rock band at the

time which, among other things, formed the backing band for visiting artists at venues like the casino. Graham and Lyn White sold their South West Parcel Express business in early 2018 and since then the couple have been doing some travelling and generally kicking back - and Graham has, as he indicated to the Free Times at the time of his retirement, rekindled his love of music. He tells the story of John's induction into the new group - appropriately monikered 'Witch Doctor' - a little differently. "I just said we're looking for a drummer

and John kind of sat bolt upright in his chair," Graham told the Free Times. "It was like a light came on. "John has been my doctor for 25 years but it now looks as if I'll have to find a new GP - all he wants to discuss is becoming a rock star." The rest, as they say, is history - 'Witch Doctor' has been rehearsing semiregularly when they find time to get together and have played a couple of small private gigs, but they're available and keen for both private and public functions large and small.

other staples - and some more recent stuff. "We enjoy getting together and it's really just a bit of fun - but we're certainly available for local functions. "We'd be happy if we play, you know, a couple of gigs a month." Colin Alley said the band's repertoire was "a pretty diverse mix", and said the local live music scene had been up and down over the last couple of decades. "There was a lot of live music in Warwick in the 1980's," he said. "We've seen the hospitality industry go through a lot of changes with regulations and so on. "There does seem to have been a bit of a resurgence in live music around here and that's very promising. "We've got some really good local acts like the Fern Brothers and Sidetracked and Sleeping Dogs, and there are some really good solo performers. "And events like the Pub Choir at the Warwick Town Hall the other weekend are great - there were 500 people there that night. "The demographics around live music here and elsewhere right now are quite interesting. "I played a gig recently with a unibased audience and these young guys were asking for Cold Chisel and 'Sweet Home Alabama'. "It just shows you can't make assumptions about what people in a certain age group want to hear." Interested in booking 'Witch Doctor'? Give Graham 'Doc' White a call on 0427 220 041. ●

An estimated 2200 people poured through the gates on Palmerin Street in Warwick on Australia Day for 'Great Australian Bites', a Southern Downs Regional Council and Queensland Government event showcasing live music and local food vendors. The crowds rocked the night away to acts including local bands Sleeping Dogs and Sidetracked, duo the Fern Brothers and blues star Ash Grunwald. Solo performer Joel Anthony who spent his high school years in Warwick and is now building his musical career and travelling the country - was another of the artists on the bill last Saturday. The self-described 'alt-folk' singer-

songwriter said it was "absolutely fantastic to have something so cool in Warwick". "The place was packed," Joel told the Free Times. "There are just so many amazing and talented people in the Warwick area but a lot of the locals don't know much about them. "That's why events like (Great Australian Bites) are so great - it allows them to be seen performing, it's just a great opportunity for them to get out and become known. "It'd be great to see more events of this type - and good on the town for supporting the acts and the food vendors. "It was a terrific night." ●

Made up of Graham on lead guitar, Joanne Denny on lead vocals, Colin Alley on guitar and vocals, Colin's son Justin on bass and John Kiss on drums, the band describe themselves as having a "broad range" of musical tastes and styles. Colin and Justin are well-known in the region for their musical abilities, having both taught music and drama at Warwick State High School - with Justin having returned to Warwick in recent times after gigging with Brisbane independent band 'Street Pieces' for several years while at university in Brisbane. Joanne has been singing locally since she was a kid, including fronting her family group the 'Denny Brothers Band' with dad Bob and uncle John, and is a familiar face and voice on the local entertainment scene. Various members of the band have played together in previous "musical lives" and Graham said the group "just fell together". They rehearse at John's rural property east of Warwick, with John again joking that rehearsals come to an end when he and Graham "being the senior members of the band collapse with exhaustion". "We've been rehearsing off and on over the past nine months or so - I might be retired but the others lead very busy lives, so it's just a matter of when we can get together," Graham said. Neil Henderson told the Free Times it was his policy not to criticise councillor pay increases, saying he believes "everyone should be paid what they're worth". But he said pay increases over the last several years to Southern Downs Regional Council employees represented by his union had been well under the rate of inflation, a situation he described as "pretty miserable". He also described the council's attitude towards employee pay and conditions as "a bargain basement job", saying the SDRC was behaving in a similar way to many other Queensland councils when it came to "discounting" staff. "There are a number of very unpleasant employers we've been dealing with councils like Mareeba, Moreton Bay, Somerset, Redlands and Western Downs are right up there," Mr Henderson said. "These councils are seeking to cut pay for female and junior workers and many of their lowest-paid workers. "These are not councils that are struggling financially either. "We reached an agreement on wages with Southern Downs but the sticking point is the nine-day fortnight provision for new employees. "It's just a basic condition of employment in this sector. "I expect this will go to arbitration by the middle of this year - if it isn't resolved by then I'll be pretty unhappy. "But we will soldier on regardless through the process." Mr Henderson said Queensland councillors were among the highest-paid in Australia, with councillors in most other

states being employed on a part-time basis.

EFFECTIVE 1 JULY ... The new pay rise for councillors, which represents a combined total increase in remuneration of $14,354, will take effect on 1 July this year. Councillors had the option of voting to forego the increase and re-directing the funds to "another operational budget activity". Councillors stated at last week's meeting that were they to forego the increase the money would go back into general council revenue and that accepting the pay rise gave them the individual ability to decide specifically where the money would go, such as to charities. The Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal recently recommended a maximum 2.1 per cent increase for local government councillors across Queensland for next financial year, compared to a maximum of 2.25 per cent last financial year. The new pay scales are as follows ... · Mayor Tracy Dobie - increase from $127,898 to $130,584 · Deputy Mayor Jo McNally - increase from $79,936 to $81,615 · Councillors (x7) - increase from $67,945 to $69,372

NSW AS AN EXAMPLE ... Local government councillors across New South Wales are part-time and are not paid a wage or salary, but instead receive an "annual fee" - which is taxed - for carrying out their duties, paid in monthly

instalments in arrears. The amount of the fee depends on the size of the council and its population. Mayors receive an additional fee reflecting their higher level of duties. NSW councils cover some of the expenses councillors incur in carrying out their duties such as training, travel and telephone expenses and provide access to cars, computers, internet, mobile phones, stationery and administrative assistance. in favour of accepting a 2.1 per cent pay rise as recommended by the Queensland Government's Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal. Mayor Tracy Dobie said there was "much discussion" around the table about councillors donating their increases to local charities and said she herself would nominate the QCWA as a recipient of her own increase. No other firm commitments about charitable donations have been publicly made since the meeting by the eight other councillors. But donations aside, the council's roughly 200 white collar or 'indoor' staff, along with 'outdoor' supervisors and foremen - all of whom are represented by The Services Union - are still waiting for a final resolution of their current Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) case. Negotiations between the union and the council finally broke down in November last year, when the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission ordered the matter be referred to a full bench of the commission for a final arbitration decision. Both sides have agreed on a 2.5 per cent pay increase for staff but the council is digging in its heels over a move to cut nine-day fortnight work conditions for new employees. The Services Union says arbitration could take up to six months. The union says the affected employees, who make up roughly half of the council's total workforce, last received a pay rise - of two per cent - in January 2018, and prior to that a 1.25 per cent rise in January 2015. The Services Union's state secretary

QUESTIONS ASKED OVER TRUCK ROUTE BY JEREMY SOLLARS A public meeting held last week on a new traffic bypass planned for the eastern side of Warwick aired serious questions and concerns from residents along the proposed route. The Southern Downs Regional Council says a federally-funded upgrade of Ogilvie and Depot Roads would improve road safety and access to farming areas for heavy vehicles including B-Doubles. The council has previously said a Federal Government grant of $395,000 would upgrade 2.6km of the roads and associated intersections and is expected to be completed in April 2020. But with the project only at a 'concept design stage' the council agreed to host a public meeting at the Warwick Town Hall last Tuesday 15 January following a request from potentially-affected residents. The meeting was attended by around 200 locals, with the main concern being the use of the upgraded roads by heavy vehicles of all sizes and not just B-Doubles, significantly increasing traffic through that eastern part of Warwick by trucks seeking quicker access to the Cunningham Highway. The concept envisages B-Doubles turning off Yangan Road and down an upgraded Depot Road and Ogilvie Road and accessing the highway in the vicinity of the Caltex Roadhouse.

Residents are concerned the new route would increase all heavy vehicle movements in the area if it proceeds. But many at the meeting were adamant even if the upgrade goes ahead trucks would turn right onto Freestone Road and access

the highway that way. Questions were raised about the ability of both Yangan and Freestone Roads

themselves to cope with B-Double traffic if not upgraded - neither road is currently approved for B-Doubles - and how many

to replace Palmer Bridge on Freestone Road, a project which is part-funded with federal money and required by Canberra to be completed by 30 June 2020. It is understood the existing Palmer Bridge will remain open to all traffic and the new bridge will be constructed on the eastern side. A council spokesman said the SDRC will send out a Request for Tender for designing and constructing the new Palmer Bridge today, Thursday 31 January, which will close on Thursday 14 March. The council is yet to release an anticipated start date for construction. "The project will replace the existing timber structure of Palmer Bridge," the spokesman said. "Palmer Bridge lies approximately 12 km to the east of the potential B-Double route that was discussed at the community meeting held last week, and the two projects will not affect each other. "SDRC and TMR control different sections of Freestone Road, and historically, Freestone Road has been used as a detour route for when the Cunningham Highway has been closed. "SDRC manages B-Double access to the section of Freestone Road it controls, including Palmer Bridge, by issuing permits under the NHVR." ●

B-Doubles would actually service farms on the eastern side of Warwick. A 'concept approval' document prepared by council officers in early 2018 states the project "will commence the opening up of B double access to the farming communities that range from the Cunningham Highway to the Condamine River, taking in localities such as Junabee, Emu Vale, Tannymorel, Swanfels, and Freestone". "This will allow for more freight and the efficient movement of stock and grain. "The background stems from community engagement with stakeholders on the 15 February 2017 (when) the Mayor held a workshop to discuss with industry the requirements to be able to get better B Double access into our region. "Currently one of the largest deficiencies is B Double access from the Cunningham Highway near Warwick via Warwick Yangan and Freestone Road, which are all under jurisdiction of Main Roads." Mayor Tracy Dobie told those at Tuesday night's meeting the project was only at the 'concept' stage and further public consultation would be done when a detailed design of the proposed route upgrade is completed, potentially within the next several months. Depot Road is expected to be sealed later this year either with separate 'betterment' funding granted by Canberra following Cyclone Debbie. ●

The Southern Downs Regional Council has no immediate plans to increase urban water restrictions despite the region's dams being significantly depleted. Leslie Dam, Warwick's primary urban water supply, is currently at 6.4 per cent of useable capacity according to the Bureau of Meteorology website. Current records on the website of SunWater, the state government agency which owns the dam, show the level is at 8.12 per cent, but this does not include the two per cent of the water in storage unable to be pumped out - as it is below the outlets - if the dam reaches that level. Experienced dam users predict Leslie Dam could run dry in 12 months with no significant inflow, but the council

predicts it would fully deplete in 21 months with no inflow. The last inflow from heavy rainfall into Leslie Dam was in April 2017. 'Extreme' water restrictions for the Southern Downs Regional Council area include a ban on hand-held hosing of gardens and lawns and washing vehicles with a 'trigger hose', with a per person/ per day water use target of just 140 litres, compared with a target under the current 'High' restrictions of 170 litres. A council spokesman told the Free Times on Tuesday of this week that SunWater "updates Leslie Dam water levels on an hourly basis and is more accurate than the BoM figures". "Also, please keep in mind that the figures for when each dam will be depleted is calculated assuming each dam's catchment area does not receive sufficient rainfall to cause runoff of water into the dam," the spokesman said. - Continued page 12

NEWS From page 10 "Obviously, if the region receives significant rainfall that flows into the dams then these figures will change. "SDRC monitors the water levels at each dam regularly, and has been working closely with the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy to develop the best strategies for managing the region's water supply. "At this time, council has no plans to introduce any new water restrictions and will remain on high level restrictions for the time being." BUILD A BRIDGE

"Without access to these bridges, primary producers have faced long detours to get produce to market and many have been unable to receive vital water deliveries during the drought," he said.

Tenterfield Shire Council says December saw the much-anticipated announcement of funding of $2.77 million for timber bridge works by Member for Lismore Thomas George and Nationals candidate for Lismore Austin Curtin. A council statement said the funding was the culmination of extended grant applications and lobbying by Tenterfield Shire Council with the support of the community and will allow Council to commence works to alleviate load limits on local bridges and reopen the Shire's road network. "An amount of $177,000 of this funding has been identified to allow council to assess the safe load limit for a further 40 bridges, identify maintenance issues and repair the structures making it safe for the short and medium term," the statement said. Mr George the bridge load limits "have been one of the biggest issues facing industry in the Tenterfield Shire".

Federal Minister for Agriculture and Maranoa MP David Littleproud will write to the Charities Commission asking it to consider revoking the charity status of animal rights group Aussie Farms. The move follows Aussie Farms publishing online the addresses of hundreds of Australian farming families, and fears extremists could use that information to trespass or worse. Mr Littleproud said last week he will also write to the Attorney General asking for him to consider whether the Information Commissioner can investigate if the publication of the addresses online breaches privacy rights, whether the purpose or intent of publishing the addresses is to encourage a breach of law, and seek advice on possible law reform to prevent this occurring in future. "None of us would like it if our home address was put online," Mr Littleproud said. "Worse, these addresses are being

CHARITY NO MORE?

put up alongside information which has already been proven wrong in many cases. "At one point these people had a picture of a pig in their deer section. "The publication of home addresses of our farming families is despicable and I won't stand for it. "These people don't deserve charity status. "We need to explore all options to see whether the law has been broken and if not, make sure this sort of thing can't happen. "This is the age of the internet and we need modern laws which deal with that. "Australia is a free country - you can choose not to eat meat, you can oppose livestock farming but it's not ok to put the addresses of farming families including children online."

COUNCIL KEEPS FIT Southern Downs councillors at their January monthly meeting last week voted in favour of the council continuing to operate the Stanthorpe Fitness Centre for another two years. The resolution included a commitment to "continue to investigate and implement business improvement opportunities into the Centre that provide a more cost effective delivery to the community". ●

even Miller. Looking more than a little like Fred Flintstone's wheels, the heavy roller powered by a Briggs and Stratton motor is a classic and despite its advancing years does a fantastic job. In addition to being a curator, Brian Miller is somewhat of a walking history on Warwick Cricket. Let's hope like the trusty roller Brian continues rolling out those good wickets for years to come. RING INS TAKE HOME THE TITLE After three days and eight games Casino visitors, Ring Ins scored a knockout blow in the final of the 2019 Australia Day Cricket Carnival defeating Bears XI by 50 runs. Ring Ins are regular visitors to the carnival and while they have tasted success before this was their first win for more than a decade. Ring Ins grabbed pole position in the final after a big win over Mitch's XI in the Semi final on the Queen's Park Turf. Their opponents Bears XI had a 43 run win over Hulks at Slade Oval and went into the final confident they could pull off their ninth carnival title. Ring Ins batted first in the final setting Bears XI a decent run chase of 144. Gus McLennan topped the batting for the visitors with a score of 26. Bears XI openers were under early attack from the bowling of Jason Myers. They quickly found themselves on the back foot losing three wickets for seven runs after only three overs. Kieren Gibbs (31) and Adam Byrne (24) fought to get Bears back on track but the damage had been done and they fell 50 runs short of the required total. Stunned Mullets finished third and Summers fourth respectively in the main competition draw. In the keenly contested social competition, it was a case of, if at first you don't succeed etc. Palace Cows claimed their first win in 26 years of competition and you could not wipe the smile from their faces. After a tense final few overs Palace Cows required two runs from the final ball. In an absolute thriller Bevan Henninghen hit the winning runs to give the Cows their maiden title. The two wicket win was a memorable win for the Cows and a great victory for persistence. 4BBB WITH AN AUSSIE THEME Members and visitors celebrated Australia Day in style at the Stanthorpe Golf Club playing a medley 4BBB Stableford sponsored by the RSL golfers. Saturday was also the David Townsend Memorial, a day when the club acknowledges the late David Townsend, popular golfer and former Patron. Honours went to Lyle Bryant and Barry Hughes with a balanced score of 24 points on each nine for a total of 48 points. Ken Hinze and Rod Werner also returned 48 points but settled for the runner up prize. The was a strong Australia Day theme on the course. Tom and Trish Fittock who won Best Decorated Cart for their "Home Among The Gum Trees." Madeline Jarman did wonders with the Australian flag and was judged the Best

Dressed Lady while Peter Gibney would have would have looked at home on the beach, at the cricket or up a flag pole. He was judged Best Dressed Male. Saturday's competition is for the February monthly medal and putting competition sponsored by club member Wes Smith and Dixon Homes. Tee off is from 11.30 am and the time sheet is on the board at the club. ON THE COURT Despite the stifling on court conditions three disciplines of Croquet were played last week. Association Croquet winners were Jenny Tunbridge and Sharyn Roser who defeated who Grace Howard in quite a low scoring affair. Peter Tunbridge and Effey Russell had a head and head tussle with Andrea Denkewitz and partner Carol Verwey. Tunbridge and Russell eventual winners 19-6. There was only a small turn out for the Ricochet games on Thursday however there were a couple of excellent games. John Draper and Liz Ellway went down 26-21 to Carol Verwey who was in good form. In a singles match Sharyn Roser scored a narrow 20-16 win over Andrea Denkewitz. In the Gateball games on Friday Team Two (Joy Newman, Jenny Tunbridge, Les Williams and Grace Howard) finished with bragging rights. They won the opening two games (14-9 and 12-8). Team One (Denkewitz, Sharyn Roser and John Draper) bounced back with a decisive 17-9 win the third game. Team Two then wrapped up a good day with a 12-10win in the final game. BUGESS UNFAZED Popular junior Matt Burgess was unfazed by the conditions and chalked up a win at Sporters on Sunday. Phil Zikan finished runner up. Paul Byrnes returned the Best Gross score of the round. He gained a mention in the Run-downs along with Ivan Jurris. Paul Leotta held the Pin Shot on the 12th and Dick Hilton claimed the Pin at the 17th. Cody Leotta took the Pro Pin. Bit late for the Australia Day BBQ's but the Meat trays went to good homes with Steve McEvoy and Shane McLaughlin. Tee off for summer Sporters is 7.308.00am Sundays and visitors and new faces

are always welcome. TRI SUCCESS IN STANTHORPE Despite the sweltering conditions competitor numbers were once again up for the Australia Day Triathlon in Stanthorpe. The annual event continues to grow in popularity and a big crowd was out in the cool of the morning to show their support for the competitors. First to cross the line in the Open Male section in a time of 00:40.08.8 was Wayne Schnitzerling. In second and third place were Peter Cary (00:41:13.6) and Ray Costanzo 00:43:19.2. Rebecca Rogers won the Open Ladies event. Her time 00:46:18.4 was 00:02:41.9 faster than runner up. Jenny Costanzo (00:49:00.3): Katrina Buckley (00:50:36) finished in third place. The team event proved popular and was won by the Gaskell Coleman team. Finishing in second and third place respectively was Itsa Breeze and Fast and Furious. Jaiden Morello, Alex Waterworth and Jason Hennoste were the first three to cross the line in the Under 12 event. TANNY ROLL UP 44 players rolled up last Friday night for round two of the Tanny Classic and an early Aussie Day celebration. Good bowls, plenty of laughs, heaps of heckling'. Deb and the Team provided a delicious home cooked after Bowls and of course there were a few cold beers. Picking up the winners points were Liam McKinney, Smith, and Ken "The Old Fella" Armstrong. Runners up were split when two teams won by eight points. They were Pam Brown, James O'Mara, Mick "The Old Bugga "Brown. Yvonne Reid and team of Abby Petersen, Jill Brown, Wayne Frank and Thommo. Geane Lamb collected the, "winner takes all Spider." After 2 rounds this is how the leader board looks:- Mick Brown and Thommo (9), Paulie Smith (8), Lyn Coleman and Jill Brown (7) , Jessie, Damo Boal, Liam McKinney and Kenny Armstrong (6). Be there for round three this Friday night. Nominations before 6.30pm - Bring your mates along for a great night of fun for all ages.

Organisers of the 2019 Australia Day Cricket Carnival in Warwick should be extremely satisfied with the outcome of their efforts over the long weekend. Officials can control most things, unfortunately for players, umpires and spectators the weather is not one of them. Despite the heatwave conditions, the iconic carnival which draws players from across Queensland and interstate each year was a great success. As an Australia Day cricket event it is only rivalled by the famous Gold Fields Ashes tournament in Charters Towers. This year while Warwick sweltered through the hottest temperatures in the carnival's history, those in the Towers were forced to use 3 x 3 popup shelters as team umbrellas, such was the downpour up there. It was an Australia Day weekend that highlighted a country of extreme but vastly different conditions. A total of 34 teams played in the Warwick competition. It was good to see so many familiar faces and teams back for the carnival. It was wonderful that young Basil Nolan brought together a team of family and close friends to honour his late father Basil Nolan Jnr. I'm sure Basil's XI will be a fixture in many future Australia Day Carnivals. Well done young man, you are doing your father and your family proud. They say only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noonday sun and after the weekend please include cricketers and definitely umpires. After somehow making it through seven T20 games, I must applaud those teams who played at Wheatvale (Saturday) and Mayhew (Sunday and Monday) for their sportsmanship. I come from what many consider to be the dinosaur era and what impressed me most over the weekend was the number of young players who addressed the umpire as 'Sir', with please and thank you added in. Have barely seen or heard that on the field for years. How refreshing. Perhaps the worm has turned. Congratulations to Warwick Cricket Association President Dave Walker and his team on a job well-done. Now I'm just off to soak my feet in another ice bath. - Casey BEHIND THE SCENES Carnivals in any sport just don't happen. More often than not there are those behind the scenes who do important work but never seek attention or accolades. Brian Miller fits that bill. 2019 marked his 23rd year preparing the four turf wickets in Warwick for the Australia Day Cricket Carnival. He and his team also ensure the numerous synthetic wickets around the district are ready for games. Miller and his two deputies Phil Willing and Scott Young did a remarkable job preparing the wickets in the heatwave conditions we have experienced. Brian was at Mayhew Oval on Sunday afternoon at the close of play to check the state of the wicket in preparation for Monday's games. His trusty side kick was a roller built in 1980 for the Warwick Cricket Association and it has seen far more cricket games and Australia Day carnivals than
