That day, she ordered the group’s site to be shut down and referred the matter to the firm’s HR department. “At no point have I or Ressan Lawyers supported it (the Facebook group). “I’m disappointed and quite angry that this could come about. family violence files, Ms Nasser said. The complainant Adrian Riley, who administers a Facebook group Dads Who Care, says two of the affected men were moving out temporarily out of fear for their safety. Dads Who Care’s charter is to be a “support group for parents who care” and to lobby for “change in child support program, Family Law Act and domestic violence policies”. “It gives me cause for concern, as well as for our community across the country,” Mr Riley said. He says he has reported the matter to Victoria Police and the Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner. 12408024-RC05-19

Victorian IVO Check features names, pictures and addresses of men in the South East. “Family violence and intervention orders are rising and we need to protect ourself!” an administrator’s post stated. “If you have one please protect others by placing a picture, IVO, name and details of the incident.
“This will help others check before they date!” One of the men was named, pictured and described as being subject to a five-year intervention order for “assault, threats, stalking, property damage etc”. He was said to have been served with IVOs with other partners, as well as hiding behind aliases. The group also featured scans of family violence intervention orders, which included the addresses of victims. On the site, the administrator described herself as a manager and conveyancing clerk at

Patients ‘at risk’ in telephone blackout By Cam Lucadou-Wells An Endeavour Hills medical centre spent five days ‘off the hook’ due to what appears to be a telecommunications bungle. Dr Richard Weston, of Raymond McMahon Medical Centre, said its service provider Commander had suddenly stopped the surgery from receiving all incoming calls on Friday 11 January. “It was only when a patient came to the surgery and informed us that we were alerted.” The situation was potentially life-threatening, with the centre on-call 24 hours a day. Despite being informed of the perils, Commander’s call-centre operators told the surgery that no technicians were available until the following Monday.
None arrived until the afternoon of Tuesday 15 January - and only then after the interventions of Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan, the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman and radio station 3AW. “It was an appalling situation,” Dr Watson said. The debacle seemed to be related to the clinic’s switchover in services from Commander to Telstra scheduled for 21 January, he said. Commander blamed Telstra for the service failure, but Dr Weston said he backed Telstra - which had been diligent and helpful during the transition. The surgery was offered compensation by Commander but safety, not money, was the issue, Dr Watson said.
A spokesperson for Commander said they could not comment on the specific situation due to privacy concerns. A Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman spokesperson said 16 per cent of the 20,433 small business complaints to the TIO in 2017-18 related to no phone or internet service. She advised customers to first try to resolve the situation with their service provider before contacting the TIO. “The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman works with residential consumers and small businesses and their phone or internet provider to fix faults such as not having a phone or internet service by working with all the parties to resolve the complaint.”

4WD link to Westall blaze An item flung from a silver 4WD is believed to have ignited a 300-square metre grass fire on the Westall Road Extension, Springvale on Australia Day. The blaze started about 6.30pm, covering a 30-metre by 10-metre section of the road's median strip between Heatherton and Rowan roads. It was contained and extinguished by crews from Springvale CFA and Clayton MFB. Police say that witnesses observed the item was thrown from a 4WD vehicle, possibly a BMW, in the vicinity of the fire scene. In windy conditions, the "potentially dangerous" fire could have crossed over the road, Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars of Greater Dandenong CIU said. The road section is bounded by trees, shrubbery and grassland in front of residential properties to the east and west. By Cam Lucadou-Wells Kim Culpin says her recent City of Greater Dandenong Leadership Award is a chance to elevate homelessness from under the carpet. Up until recently, the former police detective was general manager of WAYSS in Dandenong, which assisted 15,500 homeless individuals and families in the past 12 months. "It's not one of those glorified things," she said. "People want to push it under the carpet and think it goes away. "But most don't realise it involves children a lot of the time." Fixing homelessness is often the first step to dealing with a person's substance abuse or mental health issues. "Unfortunately when they get a place it's in a temporary rooming house where they can fall prey to the seedier side of life - drugs, alcohol and violence. "They fall from the frying pan into the fire." The situation was forcing women and children fleeing domestic violence to sleep in cars. WAYSS is chipping away at the problem with a program to get more people into safe houses or private rentals despite limited housing stock. But for a long time, there has been little government investment in public or social housing. The sector has suffered budget cuts in recent years, Ms Culpin said. It is coupled with dwindling affordable rentals in the region, and more prevalent drug abuse and mental health issues. With a major setback, many of us are vulnerable to falling into homelessness, Ms Culpin says. "A single person without children and on Newstart simply can't get housing they can af-

Rare disease charity’s win By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Hallam-based charity SMA Australia has been awarded for its life-changing advocacy efforts at the Holt Australia Day Awards. The organisation provides care for Australians living with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a fatal and debilitating muscle disease. It’s the leading cause of death for infants under 2. In May, the group successfully lobbied for
the life-saving drug Spinraza to be made more affordable under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBAC). As a result, the treatment is available under the PBAC for those with Type 1, 2 and 3A SMA under the age of 19. SMA Australia chief executive Julie Cini said she was determined to ensure adults also could get access to the treatment in future. “I will not stop fighting until I achieve this goal. “SMA is a deadly and debilitating disease, but in the year 2019 why shouldn’t treatments for diseases be accessible to those who want a good quality-of-life.” Ms Cini has lost two children Montanna and Zarlee to the disease. She says more education of maternal child nurses and GPs would ensure quicker diagnosis and treatment for patients. Holt MP Anthony Byrne who instigated the annual Holt Australia Day Awards was an instrumental supporter of getting Spinraza on the PBAC. He presented SMA Australia with the award at Hampton Park on Australia Day. “Receiving this award is a boost to our confidence, that someone outside our community recognises our hard work,” Ms Cini said. “We’re all very humbled to accept this award but our focus of all those who chose to access treatment in Australia stays the same for those living with SMA.”

Residents fear that the unannounced shock of fireworks events will continue despite a tightening of Greater Dandenong Council's policy. At a meeting on 29 January, the council endorsed a policy that requires firework permit holders to advertise their event in advance. The permit-holder must letterbox-drop residents within 1.5 kilometres of their event between three and seven days in the lead-up. The council must receive evidence - a receipt from a distribution company or a statutory declaration. Fred Bell and his 17-year-old pet kelpie Mitch who live near Sandown racecourse says the council has traditionally failed to enforce the policy. And he can't see it changing. "Large gatherings at Sandown raceway have historically used fireworks and have consistently breached their permit by failing to notify the residents with a letter drop. "Despite numerous complaints over many years and speaking to officers there is no enforcement of the act. "And so the event organisers continue to flaunt the regulations knowing they act with impunity." The situation was in stark contrast to the council's readiness to deliver parking tickets, fines for not cleaning up after dogs or being late to pay a dog's registration, Mr Bell said. He said councilors had simply "rubberstamped" the old policy with some "minor changes". "Disappointing at the best and disgusting at the worst when they all consider themselves lovers of animals." Cr Matthew Kirwan said the council needed to prosecute organisers in breach. But the policy didn't address the problem. "It only requires an event organiser to show that they have paid a company to letterbox a flyer. "I know from my experience organising Council ward meetings and community meetings how unreliable this is." Cr Sean O'Reilly, in support of the policy, said it was matter of balancing the cost of enforcement. It would be resource-intensive for the council to check with each neighbour to ensure notifications were delivered, for instance.

A police officer formerly overseeing Dandenong is helping bring together young leaders in Melbourne's South Sudanese community for peace. Superintendent Charles Allen, on leave from Victoria Police, is now working internationally and domestically with the researchbased Institute for Economics and Peace. Recently, he facilitated a four-day workshop with emerging Australian South Sudanese leaders to inspire peaceful change here and abroad. Achol Marial, chairperson of the South Sudanese Community Association, said violence between the Neur and Dinka communities in South Sudan was fueling tensions in Melbourne. Threats had been made, lives had been lost, she said. As a result, the Neurs in the city's South East were largely disparate from the Dinkas in the West. "Most of the local issues are based on the overseas issues," Ms Marial said. "Before the workshop, I didn't know half the people there. "We met with the same mindset and the same goal." The common cause was to create a diaspora to lobby the South Sudanese Government for peace in their homeland, she said The leaders were inspired by examples of reconciliation in Timor Leste, South Africa and Rwanda. GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region
Nicole designs her world By Narelle Coulter Berwick fashion entrepreneur Nicole Westmorland wants her customers to care for the planet while curating their wardrobe. In December, 23 year old Nicole launched her eponymous textile business - Westmorland. The business is based in two rooms of her parents’ Berwick home. She describes Westmorland as part of the slow fashion movement, where garments and homewares are handmade using environmentally sustainable practices or are upcycled from old garments or discarded pieces of fabric. Nicole said she had always wanted to launch her own brand, and after two years working for fast fashion giant Cotton On, she decided to take the plunge. She said she learnt a lot from the hugely successful Geelong based Cotton On, but found it “creatively crippling”. “I love my own aesthetic. I found it hard to pump out commercial designs because it was not my personal taste. My aesthetic is very bright, colourful, not very commercial.” After two years in the fast fashion world, she took some time out to travel and “clear my mind” before returning home to launch her own brand. “I was working on it behind the scenes while I was working full time so I was very busy, but I was very determined and really want to make something of it. “Travel was good. It let me freshen up and come back with a clear mind.” Unfettered by the demands and constraints of the corporate fashion world, Nicole felt free to create designs true to her own style which she described as “very young and bold, very vivid and individual”. “I don’t like to follow trends. I really like to concentrate on sustainability. There are issues with fast fashion which are not great for the earth. I try not to focus on trends, which is easy in terms of my style which is not very on trend
Berwick fashion entrepreneur Nicole Westmorland. 189255 or commercial anyway. “My pieces are individual, they don’t go out of style and I hope people will love them for a long time.” The Westmorland range includes screen printed tote bags and t-shirts, cushions, framed lithographs , upcycled clothing and a category Nicole calls Dog Stuff - waterproof jackets and leashes for pooches. She said she was always a crafty kid. Her mum tells a story of when Nicole’s kindergarten teacher called her in to see a young Nicole at work. “Apparently I had an easel set up while everyone else was playing, and I was painting and I would stand back and look at the painting and go ‘no no no’ and go back to it and

keep painting,” Nicole said, laughing. She taught herself to sew when she was in primary school, making little bags and simple tops for her sisters and friends. “I’ve always been a maker. I used to make jewellery, anything I could get my hands on.” After doing well in her VCE at Berwick Secondary College, she studied for a Bachelor of Textile Design at RMIT, all the while dreaming about starting her own business. ‘I has always been my dream to own my own small business, making and designing my own stuff makes me really happy.” She is quickly learning that being in business involves more than being creative. She is slowly learning about finance and marketing. “I have never been great at numbers, but I
am confident and believe in myself. I am passionate and determined to make it work.” Nicole said she is “almost making money” after absorbing the usual start-up costs associated with a new business. The launch of Westmorland was held at new Berwick entertainment space, Poker Face, late last year. She is now concentrating on promoting the brand through Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest. Nicole sent pieces of her work to carefully targeted “influencers” who have helped promote Westmorland on their feeds, among them a graphic artist based in Brunswick and a DJ and MTV personality. “There is so much you can learn on line these days. There are girl boss websites and young entrepreneurs and blogs and that sort of stuff. “ Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Girl and Girlboss Media is one of Nicole’s role models. The book Girl Boss sits on the shelf in her studio. “She started her brand from nothing and that was really inspiring.” In the next 12 months Nicole wants to narrow her product range to discover her “true brand”. “I want to find out what is Westmorland. Clarity would be the best thing. I want to find out who is my market, who is my customer and then cater for them.” In five years she wants Westmorland to be a well- known, specific product range “even if it’s just a range of t-shirts with my designs”. “I’d love to be manufacturing in Australia and maybe have someone working with me.” Nicole is determined to follow her passion wherever it may lead. “Everyone thought I was mad, quitting my amazing job and going into business. My biggest challenge is being brave. “You just have to start because if you don’t try you won’t know. I know what I am capable of so I just have to keep moving.”
Night dogs see the lighting By Brendan Rees Cranbourne Greyhound Racing track will shine under new lights after the club installed new energy-saving LED lighting. The upgrade at the Grant Street complex will mean an electrical saving cost of about 55 per cent. “These new LED lights are more environmentally friendly and more economic,” Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club chief executive Amanda Cameron said. “We also believe they will be better for the welfare of the greyhounds racing at night as they have brighter lighting for racing with a better coverage.“ The new lighting was made thanks to a grant from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund. Castle Electrical won the contract to carry out the installation with Carrum Downs based Plusrite Australia supplying 400 watt LED floodlights with special optical lens. Plusrite Australia managing director Ross Herdman said when power was lost with the old technology there would be up to a 20 minute start-up time before the lights would turn on again. “With LED you can turn them off and on instantly and will start immediately,” he said. “I know in the past Cranbourne racing codes have lost racing because of lights taking a long time to restart.” He added with the new LED lighting, only 26,800 watts of power would be used meaning a power saving of about 65 per cent.

BLACK SATURDAY REMEMBERED
Firey captures a dark day By Cam Lucadou-Wells In hellish smoke, a bare-headed firey places a reassuring arm around a farmer on Princes Way, Longwarry. It was one of the enduring images from the horrors of Black Saturday captured by CFA photographer Keith Pakenham. Through his 36 years with the CFA, Mr Pakenham has been out on 7500 callouts. He has stored more than two million digital images. But this is a scene that Mr Pakenham recalls instantly 10 years later. The fire-fighter was First Lieutenant Joe Aitken, standing next to one of his Dandneong brigade's tankers. The farmer masked himself with a cloth and sunglasses in the face of thick smoke bellowing from fires in Labertouche. It was just before it all hit the fan, with the blaze later roaring out of control in Tonimbuk, Longwarry and Drouin West. "The guy came out of his farm. He was just concerned - asking should I do this, should I do that ... "Joe is just saying to him we've got it under control. We'll get trucks there and look after your place. "A few words of advice to get people to calm down a bit is a good strategy." The fires destroyed about a dozen houses in the vicinity, as well as outbuildings and a factory. But the farmer's property wasn't one of them. Luckily for him, his farm was close to a central fire ground for CFA trucks, Mr Pakenham said. Living at Keysborough at the time, Mr Pakenham started Black Saturday at 6.30am with crews at the five-day-old Bunyip fires. It was a blaze that fire-fighters knew was set
First Lieutenant Joe Aitken calms a farmer ahead of the spreading Labertouche fires. Pictures: KEITH PAKENHAM to explode with spotting and ember attack beyond containment lines. As forecast, it was a searing day of fierce northerlies that buffeted his car out of its lane. It was one that went quickly because crews were so focused on the immense task. Then news started to filter through about the catastrophe spreading through Victoria. "It was horrendous. I've been to a lot of fires, the Dandenong Ranges fires over the years ... but it was the heat and the force of the wind. "I can imagine how horrendous it was on the peak of the mountains at Kinglake. There was nearly nothing you could do to protect yourself." But no one could have dreamed that 173 lives would be lost. Mr Pakenham couldn't sleep, his mind
swarming with the day's horrors. At 4am, he took off to chronicle the aftermath of Kinglake and Marysville. Things stood out like a road sign seared and bent like a leaf by the ferocious fire-storm. Or the white lines freshly painted on the mountain pass between St Andrews and Kinglake. They were luminous among an ashen hillscape of greys, charcoal and "skeletons of trees as far as you could see". They had been painted just after the fire to stop vehicles driving off the steep roadside. Despite hundreds of torched trees dropping all over the place. It was just one instance of the incredible teams working in extreme danger who never get mentioned, he says.
Keith Pakenham captured the desperation and devastation of Black Saturday.

Speaking over the stigma By Cam Lucadou-Wells A shopping trip with her son in Springvale turned into a heart-breaking event for Kimly. Another shopper stared at her son's face and asked her if he had a disease. Kimly's son, who has Down Syndrome, sometimes asks her why people look at him strangely. She says often other people in the Vietnamese community tell her that she has a disabled child due to bad karma - for doing something wrong in her previous life. Many disabled infants and children in Vietnam are abandoned and orphaned due to the stigma, she says.
Kimly is part of a Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health video campaign to tackle stigma around disability in ethnic communities. The centre says that fear of discrimination from one's own cultural community has emerged as a barrier to people applying for NDIS services. The challenge was finding people like Kimly who had the courage to speak. Other speakers included a woman of Egyptian and Italian background who is vision impaired and a man of Croatian background talking about mental health. Kimly's advice is for parents not to be reluctant to seek services to help their children.
"Disability is not really bad, not the worst ... There's things that are a lot worse than disabilities. "Don't worry about that - just do what you can for your children." The videos are available at healthtranslations. vic.gov.au. The program is funded by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.
Right: Kimly speaks out against stigmatising disability in the Vietnamese community.
LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 6 February 1919 Pneumonic Influenza In the event of it being necessary to establish a hospital at Dandenong, citizens willing to lend hospital equipment are requested to notify the Shire Secretary in order that the council may be guided as to equipment which it will be necessary to provide. Volunteers with knowledge of nursing and first aid, to assist if necessary in case of outbreak of influenza are also requested to leave their name and address with the Shire Secretary.

nong, will soon see some action. The Journal went to the area this week and spoke with families in Trewin, Deepdale, Albert and Vivien Sts, complaints came thick and fast. Main bone of contention is George Andrews Reserve - a reserve in name only. Residents say the reserve has been a fire hazard for years and only last week through Cr Warren Titcher, council cut acres of long grass there. Apart from the reserve, other complaints included: • No sewerage facilities • Nowhere for the many children to play • Mosquitoes and flies in profusion • Danger from snakes There are 45 children living in Trewin St alone and many are not allowed to play on the reserve because of snakes. Last week a 4ft tiger snake was killed there. When the residents moved into the area, about five years ago they were told that sewerage
would be available in three months. They are still waiting.
20 years ago 1 February 1999 Grey ghosts' new look The City of Greater Dandenong has taken a bold move to protect its parking inspectors from being attacked - stylish new uniforms. The move follows two attacks on parking officers last year by motorists angered at receiving parking tickets. Greater Dandenong's chief executive officer Mr Warwick Heine said he hoped the change would be accepted positively by the public. "Whether or not it prevents attacks on the workers remains to be seen, these people are just doing their jobs." Councillor John Kelly (Dandenong North Ward) said he was sceptical about the effect the uniforms would have on the public.
5 years ago 3 February 2014 Future builder Mr Bennie - now Greater Dandenong's chief executive who was last Australia Day announced as a' Public Service Medal' recipient for "outstanding public service." Mr Bennie said "Civil engineering and local government go very well together." He has considered moving to other fields but invariably stuck with local government and it's underestimated complexity. Greater Dandenong delivers 145 "discrete products" he said. Mr Bennie believes in getting the right people in the right job, getting out of their way, and entrusting them to pit their skills and knowledge to use. Mr Bennie said that since arriving, the council has achieved financial sustainability and a high level of capital works including the 20 year revitalising of central Dandenong.

Film is more than a game By Cam Lucadou-Wells Young Narre Warren North filmmaker Lily Lunder is once again in the spotlight, awarded as a finalist in the prestigious Tropfest Junior Film Festival 2019. The Year 10 student's film Reboot tells of a boy addicted to online gaming, who then runs away from his scolding mother and gets a new perspective on the world. "It's a hard balance for parents in how much their children can spend gaming," Lily says. "We hear about how dangerous it is going out on your own, but there's also the dangers of online gaming." It's an issue that affects young and old. For some, gaming is a profession; for others, an addiction, Lily says. The film's online gamer is played by brother Elan, with cameos from her mother and father. Elan was also the star role in Lily's awardwinning 2017 film Losing Time about a boy afflicted with the rare Niemann-Pick disease. "It really helps having family members who can act as they're always there when I need him. "You have time and flexibility. You know how to work with them and cooperate with them." She adds that Elan, in real life, has a balanced approach to his own gaming pursuits. Reboot was selected as one of 16 finalists in the festival, part of the iconic Tropfest event. "This is my first year entering Trop Jr and I really didn't expect to make it," Lily says. "When I heard about being shortlisted, I screamed. "But when I got the news I was a finalist, I was simply stunned." The film incorporates a pizza as a required signature item for all 2019 Trofest films.

Flying a kite for charity A Keysborough supermarket's staff and customers have raised $5840 for a Christmas charity campaign. In five weeks, the Coles supermarket campaign raised $1.42 million nationally for Redkite, which supports families affected by cancer. Funds from each purchase of Redkite Christmas merchandise went directly to the charity. Redkite chief executive Monique Keighery said the generosity sent a "very clear message of support to our families at Christmas". It ensured families had access to counselling at hospital bedsides, music therapy and financial help. Coles state general manager Mark O'Connor said: "We are incredibly thankful to our customers and team members for their amazing support in raising money for children and their families affected by cancer." "At a time of year when the pressure on

Musical megastar is back By Cam Lucadou-Wells It's been a long time coming for Doveton superstar Michael Cormick. He is about to perform for the first time in Dandenong since shooting to international stardom. The lead in numerous West End musicals in London, Cormick is set to perform songs from his extensive repertoire at his show Feelin' Good. Accompanied by David Cameron on piano and guitar, the show draws from Cormick's just-recorded new solo album. He will perform a mix of musical theatre and other classic songs, as well as tell stories of extraordinary shows, composers and collaborators. It all began singing at St Mary's Catholic Church, Dandenong as a boy. Often he sang facing the wall. "I used to hide and not want to be seen by anybody," he says. "I was just too shy." His memories of Doveton are that it was "pretty rough". His five older brothers tended to "protect" him. At 14, he appeared at a local St John's tal-

"There was a power and an energy. It was quite amazing." By 15 he was performing on cruise ships though with a chaperone. He became a regular on New Faces and TV variety shows hosted by Don Lane, Mike Walsh and Bert Newton. In a whirlwind, he was starring Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals in London. Cormick stood out from thousands of auditioners to impress Lloyd Webber. "He loved the tone of my voice." He had at first reluctant to audition for his first, CATS - he wanted to be a pop star. But EMI studio sat on the demos that he recorded for two years, while the musical theatre roles kept rolling in. His blazing list of credits include Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Beauty and The Beast, Mamma Mia and Annie. Cormick has trod the most acclaimed concert halls in Europe and performed for Queen Elizabeth II in two Royal Command performances. IN BRIEF Drink driver allegedly blows 0.288
Shocking losses
An Endeavour Hills man has been charged over allegedly recording a 0.288 blood-alcohol reading after being intercepted by police on the Monash Freeway. The 49-year-old was pulled over by Glen Waverley police in Glen Waverley about 2.20pm on Monday 29 January. He is set to be charged on summons with multiple offences including careless driving, drink driving and failing to have an interlock fitted.
By Brendan Rees Punters hoping to hit the jackpot in Greater Dandenong lost more than $121 million last year - prompting Australia's gaming watchdog to say "poker machines are deliberately designed to addict gamblers." The latest figures from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation revealed the Keysborough Hotel, which is owned ALP Group/ Woolworths, ranked as the sixth worst in the state for gaming losses with players squandering away more than $18.32 million last year. Berwick Springs Hotel, which is owned by Zagames, ranked as the second worst in the state for gaming losses with players squandering away more than $19 million last year, while Hampton Park Tavern also recorded a whopping of $13.78 million in losses, up 13 per cent from 2017. Cranbourne Information and Support Services executive officer Leanne Petrides said gambling harm led many people seeking their help to pay for food, petrol, medication, counselling, and assistance from their case workers. "Sadly, we have seen gambling related harm decimate household budgets and ruin relationships and lives," she said. Casey manager of city planning Nicola Ward said council wanted the State Government to extend a cap on the number of Electronic Gaming Machines (EGM) on the municipality. "A city-wide cap would provide certainty to the remaining parts of Casey to keep the EGM density consistent across the municipality," she said. Council was recently successful in opposing an application by the Lynbrook Hotel, which is in the capped area, for an additional 25 EGMs. "Council remains concerned about gambling losses being experienced by Casey residents, particularly given many are from vul-
Food delivery cyclist stabbed A woman remains on the run from police after a group of three held up a food delivery cyclist at knifepoint in Endeavour Hills. During the armed robbery, the 25-year-old victim was stabbed in the hand as he gave over his delivery food and phone at Amalfi Drive about 12.30pm on Monday 28 January. Shortly after, police arrested an 18-year-old woman from Dandenong North and a 20-yearold woman from Doveton. They were taken in for questioning, police say. A third woman ran away and has not been located. The victim was taken to hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries to his hand. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au. Pokies losses have soared in Dandenong. nerable communities already experiencing relatively high levels of socio-economic disadvantage," Ms Ward said. Bad Bets Australia spokesman Rowan Wenn said it was "embarrassing" the State Government and Casey Council weren't "doing more about" gambling harm. He said Casey Council had a "real opportunity" to hold the gambling industry to account, which "deliberately targeted" vulnerable people and distressed families "looking for an escape." "Things are only going to get worse unless we actually call out what is going on...as a society we're going to have more suicides, more
domestic violence, and more crime," Mr Wenn said. Alliance for Gambling Reform director and spokesman Tim Costello said the "surge" in losses at The Berwick Springs Hotel "coincides with attempts by the Zagame family to sell its pokies empire." "Hopefully the new owner will operate the venue more responsibly, and manage down the losses with reforms such as not running it the maximum 20 hours a day," he said. Mr Costello called on the State Government to "commit to reforms such as $1 maximum bets, reduced operating hours and less addictive machine design."
Man charged after police pursuit An Endeavour Hills man has been charged after police pursued an allegedly stolen vehicle in Chadstone. Police say they spotted the car bearing stolen number plates on Monash Freeway about 7.45pm on Thursday 31 January. After a short pursuit, the driver fled on foot from the car at Bolwarra Street. He was arrested by Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives a short time later. Drugs were allegedly seized from the car. A 31-year-old man was charged with car theft, trafficking a commercial quantity of GHB, and possessing methamphetamine and cannabis.

A Grand Slam for Dandy By Nick Creely Leading into Sunday 27 January's Victorian Grand Slam, Dandenong skipper Tom Donnell said his side would go in with no expectations, and to just enjoy the occasion of playing on the iconic MCG. "It's a chance not many of us will get playing at this level - we'll go in with no expectations and do our best, and see what happens. The guys will be loving it," he said at the time. "We've really got nothing to lose; we'll have fun and enjoy it as we always do." The Panthers relished the opportunity to be standing in the same position as some of the world's greatest ever cricketers, defeating the Carlton Blues to back up their Stars Conference title win the week previous. It now means that the powerful club out of Shepley Oval is the reigning red ball, oneday and Twenty20 premiers, as well as the Women's Premier Cricket Twenty20 premiers, capping off what has truly been a whirlwind, extraordinary year for the club. Tom Donnell's side were sent in on the 'G, and managed to score 9/122 on the big surrounds off the back of the skipper's 25, Lincoln Edwards (20), Karl Carver (19) and Ed Newman (18), but were troubled by the likes of Aaron Smillie (1/22), Tom Smyth (2/16) and Eddy O'Sullivan (1/28), who crucially kept pace off the ball, only leaking seven fours and no sixes. The Blues - who were ironically rolled for just 49 in last year's one-day final by the Panthers - were once again decimated at the top, with gun guest spinner Suraj Randiv (3/21) removing BBL hopeful Brayden Stepien second ball before the Blues slipped to 3/8 after Randiv broke through two more times in a matter of minutes. A splendid, daring knock by Blues skipper
Dandenong took out the inaugural Victorian Grand Slam at the MCG on Sunday 27 January. Nick Ross (71) had his side roar back into the game, but he was soon running out of partners. Ross crashed seven boundaries - the only batsman from his side to find the rope - and managed to bring the game into the final over. But his run-out meant game over, with the Panthers suffocating the Blues to restrict them to 8/115, with James Nanopoulos (1/22) and Pete Cassidy (1/21) extremely important towards the back-end.

But it was the spinners in Randvis and Karl Carver (1/21) that proved the difference, with Carver's first spell especially absolute class and perfect for the conditions. The Panthers will now travel to Adelaide in early March for the National Premier Twenty20 Championships, where they will take on nine different Premier sides across the country to determine the champion Twenty20 club side in the country.

Sandown’s top awards By Mick Floyd My Redeemer and Tornado Tears have recently been named joint winners of the 2018 Sandown Greyhound of the Year. The voting panel consisting of the club's committee, CEO and Racing Manager couldn't split the pair after each compiled an outstanding record at the View Road circuit throughout the calendar year. Tornado Tears announced himself as one of the country's most exciting chasers when running 41.20 on his 715m debut - the second fastest time ever recorded - as well as the second fastest time over 595m (33.67). He was undefeated in all six starts over the 'half-mile' highlighted by victories in the group 1 RSN Sandown Cup and Crocmedia National Distance Championship. "We had a great ride at Sandown last year all thanks to Tornado Tears," said trainer Robert Britton. "You appreciate these things at the end of the year because at the time it's bit of a whirlwind but you look back on it and you realise that you've had a very lucky year with a very good dog." My Redeemer won the group 1 HarrisonDawson in May before taking out the world's greatest greyhound race, the TAB Melbourne Cup, six months later. He raced at Sandown Park 14 times in 2018, winning eight times and being placed on four more occasions netting over $575,000 in prize money. "It is a great honour to share the Sandown Greyhound of the Year with a great dog like Tornado Tears, they both had fantastic years," said trainer David Geall. "Winning the Melbourne Cup and Harrison-Dawson - we're just privileged to train a dog like him. We bred the dog, we whelped him down and reared him, it's been a fantastic ride with him." Poke The Bear was also considered for the for the award after winning 10 times at Sandown Park in 2018 - seven of which were in top grade - including the September Speed Star. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
The DDCA Under 21s claimed yet another Neil Wright Shield after defeating Cricket Southern Bayside.

Jonty’s century guides DDCA to Shield By Nick Creely The Dandenong District Cricket Association's stunning record in the VMCU Neil Wright Under 21 Shield continued on Sunday 27 January, with the DDCA recording its 12th overall premiership, and its 10th since 1996/97. Coached by Springvale South great Craig Slocombe once again, the DDCA's brightest young stars defeated Cricket Southern Bayside at Schramms Reserve in Doncaster to cap off an extraordinary tournament. After winning the toss and batting, the DDCA lost Austin Heldt and Jordan McDonnell early to be 2/35, but that's where the Bayside's momentum ended. Riley Payne (64) and overseas star Jonty Jenner completely blew the game apart in a match
defining 151-run stand for the third wicket, combining for 19 fours and four sixes to get the score to 7/219 off their 40 overs. But it was Jenner's stunning knock that turned heads, with the Narre South Turf 2 star cracking 109 off just 71 balls, in a true sign of his class and ability to find the boundary. The DDCA never allowed the Bayside to reach any lofty heights with their batting, with Matt Wetering (4/22) doing the bulk of the damage with the new ball, while exciting spinner Riley Siwes (2/18) and skipper Brayden Sharp (4/37) helped restrict them to 136 in just 31 overs. DDCA Neil Wright Shield Premiers Tournament Statistics Jonty Jenner - 223 runs at 74.33 Austin Heldt - 122 runs at 24.4

Ortland's tireless efforts By Hayley Wildes There was never any doubt as to Craig Ortland's standing in the local sporting community and that notion was re-affirmed last Saturday when the Noble Park stalwart was awarded Sports Hall of Fame honours at the Greater Dandenong Council's Australia Day awards. Ortland, who has been involved with the Noble Park Cricket Club for over 40 years (including 22 years as President), was speechless when he found out of his award. "I couldn't believe it, I was gobsmacked and speechless to be honest, which was one of the few times that that's ever happened," Ortland said with a laugh. "It was great recognition, but it's also embarrassing in a lot of ways. "It's good for the family; the wife and four kids - they were all very proud and my Mum and brother, along with a few mates from cricket, came to the ceremony." Ortland is one of the most recognised faces around the Noble Park Cricket Club and Club Noble - his work within both organisations has been tireless and after 22 years as President of the cricket club, he keeps putting his hand up for roles because of the enjoyment and giving back to the community. "I just love it," he said of his role as President of the Noble Park Cricket Club. "I don't play anymore, and it gives me a sense of involvement and I'm also a Director of Club Noble, which is the over-arching body for all affiliated clubs, so it gives me something to do. "There's a whole group of us that do it and we've got committee members that have been there a long time as well and we all do it together. "It's the bond that you make with the guys that are still playing, helping out the club and really giving back for the people that were
there when I was a junior." Ortland's junior cricketing journey began with Noble Park when he was just 10 years old, as he recounts. "I was born in Williamstown, but lived in Broadmeadows until I was about seven, and then Mum and Dad came out to Noble Park and I started playing cricket at Noble Park under 12s when I was 10,"

returned to Noble Park and as he puts it simply, "I've been there ever since." Noble Park play in the VSDCA (Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association) and Ortland spoke about the club always wanting to compete in the highest level of competition possible. "I enjoy watching the firsts, it's good to watch the good players - they're a lot better than I was," he said with a laugh. "As a club, we've always tried to aspire to play the highest level of cricket that we can. "We've had some great players in our time, like Geoff Richardson and Damien Fleming, and we've had a bit success along the way, winning three firsts flags in the Subbies." One of Ortland's most cherished roles is being a Chairperson for the Club Noble Christmas Party - a charitable event that gives local children and families a special community day. The event has been running for over 30 years and on the last Sunday in November, over 3000 people come together as a community to enjoy the festivities and put a smile on the faces of those in need. "It's great to see the smiles on the kids faces and it's a great for the community." He said. Whilst Ortland has put in countless hours for both the Noble Park Cricket and Club Noble, he made it clear that it's a team effort and thanked everyone who has been involved in his journey. "I've had a lot of support along the way from my wife, four children and my Mum as well," he said. "There's a lot of people who do a lot of work, if not more work than I do, at all clubs, so it's great for me to be recognised but all the volunteers of all clubs do a great job. "We've got a great club; Noble Park is a great area and I think I'll always be involved for as long as I live."
When Jessica McCulloch graces the basketball court, she takes over games. Because of that, it was a surprise to very few people when she was named Sportsperson of the Year at Greater Dandenong Council's Australia Day awards last Saturday. After beginning playing basketball when she was eight years old because her friends at school were playing, McCulloch has truly found her calling on the hardwood. McCulloch, a 20-year-old Special Olympic Basketball athlete, who plays locally for the Dandenong Casey Titans, has not only represented her state - a stunning achievement in itself - she's also travelled the world pulling on the green and gold for Australia. McCulloch represented Victoria at the Special Olympics National Games in 2014 and 2018, winning silver and gold respectively and in 2015, she helped lead Australia to gold at the
Special Olympic World Games in Los Angeles. 2015 was a big year for McCulloch, not only did she travel to America and win gold, she also headed to Ecuador for the INAS Global Games. Whilst 2015 saw her travel the globe, 2018 was when she really took over the basketball scene with a dominant display at the 2018 Ivor Burge Championships - a tournament that sees the very best intellectually disabled players in the country compete on a national stage. McCulloch was a woman on a mission - not only did she lead Victoria to a gold medal, she put up ridiculous numbers along the way too. In their final game, she poured in 36 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a performance that had to be seen to be believed. After a dominant 2018, McCulloch has her sights set on an even bigger 2019. She will be competing once again at the Ivor Burge Championships, held later this month at the AIS in Canberra, and is currently in trials for the
