and we were oblivious as to what was about to unfold," Mrs Miszkowiec said. "Our grandson was playing in his room when the back wall of the house was on fire and we knew we had to get out of the house. We were yelling for the others to get out too. Mrs Miszkowiec was looking for their pet cat, which was instinctively hiding. "I had to pull him out from under a bed. In doing so, I dislocated his leg," she said. "He then got put across the road in a neighbour's house. Everyone else in the family was out."

As soon as the family saw the back curtains on fire, they evacuated the house. "Andrew got the keys to get the car out the garage and our eldest son, Rodney, grabbed his two year old son Jackson," she said. "Andrew made me take the car with Jackson and I went to one of our daughters' houses to get the baby away from all the mayhem while Andrew and Rodney stayed to help fight the fires along with others." Seven homes were destroyed and several others were severely damaged in Narre Warren South on Black Saturday, 10 years ago. Many residents living in Narre Warren South were unaware that such an immense fire was about to descend on their town, including the Miszkowiec family. "Moments earlier we had been watching TV distressed about the Wallan fire and how sad it was," Carol Miszkowiec said.
"Then everything started to unfold as we too, were now on fire." On that day, Mrs Miszkowiec recalls feeling total fear, panic and an overwhelming sadness. The fire completely demolished the Miszkowiec family home. Prior to the fire approaching, Andrew Miszkowiec noticed a car driving up and down their street, honking its horn. Mr Miszkowiec exited the home, curious as to whom it was. He smelt the smoke. "In our house, the air-conditioning was on

Preppies take first steps By Jessica Anstice All 44 new Haileybury prep students started their first day with some fun activities which allowed them to socialise and make connections with their peers. Later in the day they had maths and writing sessions as well as a physical education class. "Our prep students have made a smooth transition into our junior school and settled well into routines and expectations," head of junior school at Edrington Michele McGill said.
"We had lots of eager, smiling faces as they walked through the door on their first day of school." Next week the school will introduce the preps to their Year 4 buddies with a teddy bear's picnic. The Berwick Buddies program aims to create an environment where children feel safe, promote positive social relationships between students throughout the junior school and encourage children to actively care for and look out for other children.

Parents despair over fees Victorian parents are flooding community service organisations desperate for help to meet excessive return-to-school costs. Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) CEO Emma King said 2019 is shaping up as one of the worst years in recent memory. "One community agency in Narre Warren has processed 62 families for assistance since November. It's seeing 10 new families each day," she said. Ms King said on top of the standard costs of textbooks, uniforms and shoes, schools were increasingly slugging families with bogus 'compulsory costs'. "Parents who are already struggling to make
ends meet are being asked to pay upfront for extra 'essential' fees to cover items like locker keys and I.T licences," she said. "When you factor in schools asking students to 'bring their own' digital devices, redesigned uniforms as well as the costs of school sport, camps and class excursions, this quickly adds up. "The hidden costs of sending your child to a so-called free government primary or secondary school in Melbourne costs between $3400 and $5100 each year." Narre Warren South P-12 College principal Rob Duncan said their college fee structure is in line with DET policy.
"Our families, exclusive of uniform and books would pay no more than $100 for the year for curriculum related items," Mr Duncan said. "Unless they are in a specialist program or study which requires resourcing over and above that normally provided, such as our Visual Arts and Multi Media program. "We understand the financial hardship many of our families experience and state school's relief provides assistance to many of these families, particularly for books and uniform." Mr Duncan said the college believes that education needs to be accessible and afford-
able for every student. VCOSS is urging the Victorian Government to do three things to help families in need: 1. Make public transport free for all school students so they can afford to get to school. 2. Establish a subsidy scheme to help families experiencing disadvantage pay for sport or recreation. 3. Provide secure funding to the State Schools' Relief organisation and top-up funding for the Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund, programs that provide much-needed financial assistance. Existing funding for both will run out at the end of 2019.

"We have to try and clean the place and get it back to working order again," Mr Dodsworth added. "It isn't going to take five minutes. "It is extremely upsetting that all of this has happened." Federal MP Jason Wood is fighting to secure
$50,000 of funding for the group in wake of the devastation. "My goal is to get money to fix what they've done and replace what has been taken but also to go to the next level and get this place upgraded and protected," he said. "The heartbreaking thing is that everyone involved are all volunteers. "With all the work they do - and the fact that they're doing it for the kids - it's just so unfair

A Harkaway Scout Hall has been infiltrated by seasoned criminals and used as a hideout to manufacture drugs and rebirth stolen cars. According to the Casey District Scout Association, the perpetrators have stolen $14,500 worth of goods - including a defibrillator, camping equipment and machinery - and dealt a further $2900 worth of damage to the property. It is believed that the offenders entered through a small window, unhinged multiple locks and smashed through a plastered wall to gain access to the hall. Security cameras and alarms at the premises were also removed. Police subsequently discovered a substance inside the fridge and, based on the aroma, concluded that the hall's kitchen had been used to cultivate illicit substances. "We've been told we have to get rid of all of the couches and furniture because it will all be infused," Helen Pinkstone, from the Harkaway Scout Group, said. "The police think they've been cooking something in here, and it smells really funny." Located near Upper Beaconsfield, the property is used by scouts across Casey and Cardinia for camping and is also hired to community groups on a weekly basis. The thieves also raided a shed behind the hall, which was used to store high-powered machinery. When Harkaway Scouts Warden Kevin Dodsworth discovered a discarded set of car seats and ignition barrels lying in the grass, he realised he was dealing with experienced lawbreakers. "The extension cord was unravelled, and they've unhinged the screws and got inside the shed and used the machinery," he added. "They've brought in a car, re-birthed it and they've even left the tail lights in the shed. "We know it's something to do with drugs, because if you look around there are candles and bits and pieces all over the place." The Harkaway Scouting Branch has had to suspend hire of the hall until March due to the

1
Discuss what to do if a bushfire threatens your home. Many households find that having a discussion over dinner works best as everybody is together and focussed.
2
Prepare your home. There are simple things you can do around your home to prepare it for a bushfire, such as keeping the grass low and having a cleared area around the house.
3
Know the bushfire alert levels. If there is a fire in your area, you will find its alert level on the Vic Emergency App or website. Keep all the bushfire information numbers, applications and websites stored on your mobile phone. In a bushfire, it's important that you stay up to date on conditions in your area.

Storms lashed our homes By Jessica Anstice
From 5.30pm onwards, the SES was out and about assisting residents with trees on cars, trees on houses and garages and trees on roads. Picture supplied by Narre Warren SES.
Narre Warren SES Unit was kept busy Wednesday evening, January 30, attending to over 160 calls for assistance in the City of Casey. From 5.30pm onwards, the SES was out and about assisting residents with trees on cars, trees on houses and garages and trees on roads. The highest hit was the southern part of Casey. Affected areas included Devon Meadows, Lynbrook, Cranbourne, Hampton Park, Clyde and Narre Warren South. Approximately 69 SES jobs were for damage or blockage to houses and buildings, and about 97 jobs were for trees down on roads and carriageways. Emergency services volunteers were still out on jobs well past midnight. Strong winds flung trampolines through the air and caused power poles to fall. Narre Warren North, Devon Meadows, Hallam, Hampton Park and Berwick CFA units joined forces with multiple SES units including Narre Warren, Malvern, Monash, Whitehorse, Maroonah and Glen Eira. "It was heartening to see our emergency services brothers in the CFA come to quickly and eagerly," Narre Warren SES Unit controller Damian Burns said. "It's about working as one to keep the City of Casey safe. "Wednesday night was particularly heavy because of the number of trees that had to be cleared."

Alysha helps others to build their lives By Jessica Anstice Beaconhills College student Alysha Hall, along with 15 other students, will be travelling to Nepal in November to work in villages, helping families move back into their homes that were ravaged by the earthquake in 2016. "Throughout my life, I have always loved helping others and I have been able to do this in our local community for the last few years," Ms Hall said. "However, when this opportunity arose for me to help a family on the other side of the world, I grabbed it with both hands because this is something so unique to what I have done in the past." Working with Habitat for Humanity, the students will spend a month helping the most vulnerable families to build new homes and transforming lives. "I admire the work that Habitat for Humanity does all around the world and I knew that I wanted to be a part of this project as soon as it was presented to me," she said. Ms Hall believes that being able to get to know the family she will be helping and working with them directly will be "quite remarkable". "We will be able to see first-hand that our hard work has made a significant difference and impact on others," she said. The Beaconhills College students will be fundraising together by running events both inside and outside of school such as sausage sizzles or bake sales. Picnic time for teddy bears By Jessica Anstice Haileybury junior school students and their teddy bears had their picnic, and what a wonderful picnic it was. Once the Prep students had met with their Grade 4 buddies they made their way to the oval for their Teddy Bear's Picnic. The Grade 4 students were encouraged to chat to their Prep buddy about their teddy bear and to ask questions about themselves to make them feel comfortable. Students sat on rugs and ate lunch together as a way of developing those first connections. The Grade 4 students are always excited to meet their buddy and be a role model for them. They are really looking forward to looking after them in the yard and completing maths and reading activities with them during the year.

Volunteer is honoured Local disability support agency The Bridge has lots to celebrate. One of its valued volunteers, Trevor Williams, was a finalist in the Casey Council Australia Day Awards Senior Citizen category. Mr Williams was nominated for his regular volunteer work at The Bridge, on Webb Street in Narre Warren, for the past five years. The Bridge is well known and respected throughout Casey and Dandenong as a disability support agency of choice for many local individuals and families. Mr Williams received his certificate from Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon. "Trevor had a great day, and so did I. We took lots of photos. Trev was pretty chuffed," The Bridge service coordinator Catherine
Dunstan said. Mr Williams is multi-skilled, warmly supporting adult participants with disabilities to achieve their goals, and also assisting Santa at The Bridge's recent celebration. The Bridge welcomes new volunteers as activity assistants at its services in Narre Warren, Berwick, Cranbourne, Dandenong and Noble Park. As of the 1 January 2019, Spolly’s Syndications Pty Ltd is offering and advertising greyhound syndicates to the general public. Spolly’s Syndications Pty Ltd is Australia’s first syndicating company to be able to offer this service. Publicly marketed greyhound syndicates are required to be registered as Managed Investment Schemes (MIS) to comply with the Corporations Act and with the assistance of Primary Securities Ltd, a Responsible Entity. Spolly’s Syndications Pty Ltd and Sandown Greyhound Club recently partnered to create Greyhound Syndicating Services Pty Ltd, which will act as the trust administrator to comply with these regulations. Owners Steven and Jess Spoljaric said the new business will have a “direct and positive impact on the greyhound industry, animal welfare and the local Gippsland community“. They intend Spolly’s Syndications Pty Ltd to take a leadership role in the field. “We believe this giant leap forward for greyhound syndication will ultimately promote a
progressive and positive cultural change to the greyhound industry,“ Mr Spoljaric said. Spolly’s Syndications Pty Ltd is a local family run business that relocated to Kilmany in 2015 in order to syndicate racing greyhounds. “Our mission is to provide people with the opportunity to get involved with the fun and excitement of greyhound racing, while maintaining the highest level of care. “Individuals purchase a share in a greyhound and pay a low-cost monthly fee for a period of time that contributes towards the care of their greyhound. They then follow the growth and development of their greyhound as they prepare to race on a competitive scale. “We are very proud of the expansion of our business and personally manage the breeding, care, training and racing of all of our greyhounds. “To date, we are thrilled to have syndicated over 100 greyhounds. In addition, we ensure every one of our retired greyhounds is successfully rehomed.“ For further information email info@spollyssyndications.com.au or phone 1300 SPOLLY.

Storms batter South East By Brendan Rees A massive clean up was undertaken after wild storms lashed across Casey, bringing down trees and cutting off power to thousands on Wednesday evening 30 January. After a sweltering hot day, a severe thunderstorm described as a "mini-tornado" sparked hundreds of calls for help with the Narre Warren SES responding to 164 jobs from 5.30pm. Tooradin badly bore the brunt of the storm where the roof of tidemaster boat on the foreshore flung off, flying across South Gippsland Highway. "We had customers in, and they had to hide behind the counter because they could see the all the roof of the tide master coming past them," Tooradin Ice-cream Shop owner Alissa Light said. "We had to evacuate them because they were too scared, so we had to put them in the bakery so they could finish off eating their icecream." Ms Light said two of her signs also blew off, damaging their garden bench, leading her to add: "I can't believe no one got injured." "The airconditoner has fallen over on the roof, the power was off, the gutters on the roof are ruined," she said. A power blackout until 10pm meant thousand dollars' worth of ice-cream had to be thrown out at her shop. Devon Meadows, Lynbrook, Cranbourne, Hampton Park, Clyde and Narre Warren South were also reportedly badly hit by the storm. SES Narre Warren Unit Controller Damian Burns said crews attended nearly a hundred jobs including removing trees from roads and carriageways, and cleaning up damage or blockage to houses and buildings. No injuries were reported. SES units from Malvern, Monash, Whitehorse, Maroondah and Glen Eira also assisted."Major jobs were for trees down with volunteers still out on jobs well past midnight," Mr Burns said. The Bureau of Meteorology said wind gusts ranged between 90km/h to 100 km/h. "It's what you might consider a cap in the atmosphere, so the cap was holding for much of the day and then around mid-afternoon finally it was breached and there was rapid thunderstorm development," duty forecaster Stuart Coombs said. The Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne was lashed with 19 millimetres where several trees fell and a number of walking paths washed out. "A large Swamp Gum fell near the Woodland Picnic Area and an old Acacia Black Wattle Fell in the overflow carpark. The Natural Areas team have been out all morning cleaning up the debris," Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne Conservation Officer Ollie Sherlock said. Devon Meadows CFA brigade captain Andrew Swain said power lines down were brought in Muddy Gates Lane in Tooradin with power cut for eight hours. He said the thunderstorm also brought down power lines on Worthing Road in Devon Meadows.

"We drove around our area removed what we could off the road without tying up the SES," Mr Swain said. "I haven't seen rain and wind like that 16 years, it was just like a minitornado." Other shops in Tooradin affected included the Boardwalk Cafe where water seeped through the back roller door, while a gate was blown off at the Post Office. Rubbish bins were also reportedly detached and "flown down the road" on South Gippsland Highway. Tooradin Primary school principal Zania Cope said three trees came down near their staff carpark while branches fell onto the oval. "We're just so lucky there's nothing that went through any building," she said. Ms Cope was astounded by the community spirit in "rallying together" in the clean-up. "The camaraderie amongst our community helping people in need was sensational. We feel very honoured and privileged to be part of this community," she said. According Blind Bight resident Bob O'Connell, power was out for 24 hours, causing a blow-out on his fridge."That was an absolute pain," he said. "The oven went at the same time." "I was really worried, there's probably $300$400 of bait in the fridge. Luckily, they reckon you're right after 24 hours."

Black Saturday 10 years on Special commemorative edition
Narre Warren North Fire Brigade saved around 120 houses on Black Saturday. Sadly, two homes were destroyed.
Fire captain recalls heat By Jessica Anstice February 7, 2009 started off as a normal day for then Narre Warren North Fire Brigade captain Shaun Trotter. "The day was forecast to be a very nasty fire day," he said. Mr Trotter was with his family at the Cranbourne basketball stadium when he got the call for the first fire. He went straight to the fire station and became incident controller. Narre Warren North CFA's Tanker One and FCV (forward Command Vehicle) were called to the fires further down the Princes Highway, leaving the station with just Tanker Two and Mr Trotter's car. "By mid-afternoon, a land owner cut down a branch from a tree which was smouldering high up from the earlier fire and once it hit the ground off the fire went again," Mr Trotter said. "We were called and once we arrived the fire was uncontrollable. "It ran up the creek behind houses on Crawley Road, spreading into front and back yards on both sides of the creek." Mr Trotter rang his wife as she was the Municipal Emergency Response Co-ordinator and told her of what was happening and asked for more support from other brigades in the area. Air Support arrived and helped the Narre Warren North Fire Brigade members immensely. "The crews that fought the fire that day and also for the weeks after were from around the state of Victoria, thank God to them all," Mr Trotter said. "I passed the job onto a staff operations
Narre Warren North Fire Brigade saved around 120 houses that day, but lost two houses, a caravan and fences etc. officer from the CFA as he was trained for the large scale job it was turning out to be." Mr Trotter was made the field operations officer for the fire. "We ended up with over 200 fire fighters, 39 vehicles, Elvis the helicopter, plus locals and Marco's IGA getting food and drinks to us all," he said. Narre Warren North Fire Brigade saved around 120 houses that day, but lost two houses, a caravan and fences etc. "The sadness came from a lady who watched her house burn with all the memories in it and there was nothing I or my team
could do," he said. "I knew of the fires happening in Victoria at the time of the Narre North/Harkaway fire but we were a bit busy with what we had. "I did speak to my then first lieutenant who was on our tanker in Labertouche fighting fires and knew of their fight." The night before Black Saturday, all Narre Warren North Fire Brigade members attended the station to listen to the chief brief them. "I don't think anyone could have imagined of what would happen the following day," he said.
"But I know in my heart we all tried our best, everyone in the CFA, from top to bottom." The day following the fire, February 8, 2009, Mr Trotter's wife ensured he had a full day off from CFA as he was "mentally and physically gone". "Others on that day probably did what I did, I sat down and cried," he said. "I have to be honest and say I struggled with the emotional feelings of what I could have done better, but after time I actually found some peace by talking to my wife, kids, friends and also counsellors. "I also chatted to my dad as he helped me after I fought Ash Wednesday fires and the aftermath as a 14 year old. They would call it PTSD." Mr Trotter took a couple of months out of CFA to have a break for personal reasons. "It still does hit me sometimes but a cuddle from the wife and kids helps," he said. The following week after the fire, Mr Trotter organised a session for all his fire fighters. "We laughed, cried, listened to what others did and the struggles they had," he said. "I also organised a session for the locals to turn up and debriefed them about the day." Mr Trotter is still a member of the Narre Warren North Fire Brigade and has been for 21 years. Further, he has been in the CFA for 27 years. "I hope it never happens again, every year I pray for the 173 lost on that day but I have to include the ones who we lost on Ash Wednesday," Mr Trotter said. "It will live with me for the rest of my life. "I give thanks to my wife who helps me through this episode of my life."
Remembering the tragedy of 2009 at ceremony All members of the community, family, friends, bereaved, and volunteers are invited to come along to a memorial ceremony to reflect on how far the community has come since the Black Saturday tragedy in 2009. The memorial ceremony will be held at Amberwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
berley Park Shopping Centre in Narre Warren South at the Memorial Park bench area, opposite IGA. A special memorial Ginkgo Biloba Tree will be planted behind the Memorial Park bench which will in future provide a sheltered spot
for members of the community to sit and reflect. Special thanks to Hampton Park Community House, Seebeck Developments, Ritchies IGA, Affirm Welding, Endeavour Hills Lions Club, Bulla and Monde Nissan
Australia for their support.

Black Saturday 10 years on Fires too close to home Special commemorative edition
By Jessica Anstice A family of six living in John Joseph Court, Narre Warren North witnessed homes surrounding theirs destroyed by the Black Saturday fires in 2009. On the morning of the fires, homeowner Claire sent her two children to a friend's house for a swim, further down Crawley Road. The children remained there after the fire broke out, with the other parents for safety. "I remember it was hot, really hot. It hit 47 degrees Celsius in Narre Warren North," Claire said. "We closed up the house, the cooler was on and the children went for their swim. "Then we could smell the smoke, so we stepped outside to see. It was so close to us." When Claire's partner Steve went to investigate, he didn't come back. "So I went to find him and saw just how bad it was," she said. "He, along with dozens of other local men, were helping the CFA fight the fires with hoses and buckets. It was bedlam. "Houses were lost, but the community strength of neighbours fighting together, saved many more." Steve said families were standing on their properties, looking lost and not knowing what to do. "They and their houses were at risk but they were just watching. Strange," Claire said. "I'll never forget seeing a large gum tree just spontaneously combust ahead of the fire. "With the heat and wind combined, a spark must have caused it. I'll never forget it." The Narre Warren North fires were mostly along the creek area, before spreading out when it reached King Road. Claire said Steve loves helping people and he "didn't hesitate to get out there and be proactive". "I was worried about him of course, but I also knew he'd keep himself safe and hopefully not do anything stupid," she said. "However if he had to go into a burning building to save someone, he wouldn't hesitate." Claire watched as Elvis, a water bombing helicopter, arrived and dumped water from a local lake around her property. "We were lucky enough to get a water bombing helicopter here as there were so many houses at risk," she said. "I was not much use fighting the big fire, but I saw so many spot fires starting in people's gardens, so I grabbed the garden hose
The Narre Warren North fires were mostly along the creek area, before spreading out when it reached King Road. and started putting out the spot fires. "Lots of other neighbours started doing the same thing too. We probably saved a few houses just by doing that." Claire, along with two of her neighbours, climbed a fence to put out a vegie patch on a property two doors down from them. "It was well lit and up against their house wall. We definitely saved that house," she said. "I would return home every now and then, and have a drink and wet myself down in the shower, then go back out again." When returning home one time, Claire found her dad collapsed out the front. "He's went out to water down the garden to prevent spot fires at our place, but passed out from the heat," Claire said. "I took him inside, popped him in the shower and managed to flag down an ambo as we couldn't get through to 000. I'm a nurse now, but I wasn't at the time and I was panicking. "Turns out he had a big drop in blood pres-
sure which happens in the heat. Vasodilation it's called, and is why so many people faint in the heat." By this time, Claire said the fire seemed to be under better control so she stayed home. "We helplessly watched a house on the hill slowly burning. It burned and glowed through the night," she said. "I cried, a lot. We were exhausted. Steve came home eventually, black and sweaty and muddy. "My children were dropped home safe and sound." Steve was out fighting the fires for several hours and he was exhausted when he returned home. He remembers the people standing around bewildered, desperately trying to stretch hoses to reach as the water pressure was low. "He remembers saving one particular house, near the lake, with a few other blokes, where a woman was fighting the fire nipping
at her house, all alone," Claire said. "They all saved it together and she was crying and grateful. "He also got caught under Elvis dumping a load of water from the lake. He said he got coated in mud and weeds. But he was amazed how effective the dumps were." Days following, Claire remembers everyone being dazed and in disbelief. "We never thought we'd be at risk, considering ourselves suburbia, but I guess as semirural, we are at risk, as we found out that day," she said. "We walked around afterwards, inspecting the damage and path of the fire. Lots of people were doing the same, and everyone was stopping and talking about it. "The Narre North CFA held a locals meeting soon after, explaining how the fire came about. We all wanted answers. We didn't get many."
Narre Warren North survivors recall Black Saturday By Jessica Anstice On the afternoon of the Black Saturday fires, Tori and her husband Nick Arfaras, were holding their youngest daughter's 12th birthday party at her home in Narre Warren North. "Earlier in the morning, around 11am, there had been a fire in the Troups Creek Retarding Basin and we were getting updates on the fires through the television and radio," Mrs Arfaras said. "Nick was upstairs when he heard a crackling sound coming from the direction of the creek and then we noticed big 'flakes' floating into our backyard. "Nick rushed down towards the creek where he noticed the fire was quickly spreading through the grass and trees along the creek's bank." Mr Arfaras raised the alarm with a neighbour whose property adjoins the creek area. "He then came back home where we quickly changed into appropriate footwear and clothing, grabbed whatever buckets we could find, and joined our neighbours in a 'hose and bucket brigade' at the end of our court," Mrs Arfaras said. "The CFA quickly turned up and took over and we also had one of the water bombing helicopters assisting. "They told us that we needed to keep check30 STAR NEWS

Mrs Arfaras said her family was very aware of the fires on the day. "My parents had had to evacuate. I'll never forget my mum being on the phone saying she could see the flames but that dad didn't want to leave his horses and me saying 'just get out',
and then the phone went dead," she said. "About an hour later I was able to get back in contact with her. Due to their location we had about two weeks of them being under threat." The aftermath was "quite emotional" for the Arfaras family. "Due to having to evacuate during the Ash
Wednesday fires I have quite a fear of fires," Mrs Arfaras said. "So between having them three houses away and the continuing uncertainty of my parents' situation I was really shaken. "There was also a real sense of guilt for feeling like this when there were families whose lives had been forever changed." berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
Black Saturday 10 years on Cool head in fire disaster Special commemorative edition
By Cam Lucadou-Wells Ten years on from Black Saturday, the fire-risk conditions are eerily similar, says CFA Acting Chief Officer Trevor Owen. Based at the CFA's incident control centre at Dandenong, Mr Owen oversees the South East Region already trying to suppress multiple bushfires in East Gippsland this summer. And that's before we hit February, traditionally the most fire-dangerous month. Mr Owen was one of the few fire and emergency commanders singled out for his coolheaded decisiveness by a Royal Commission into the 2009 disaster. He had made the tough call to divert fire trucks from a fast-moving grassfire among homes in Narre Warren South to avert a potential catastrophe in Harkaway. If unchecked, the galloping Harkaway blaze buffeted by a fierce south-westerly wind could envelope the Dandenongs in an Ash Wednesday-like horror scenario. It was the right call. A matter of life and death. But it was a difficult one. During that hellish afternoon, he got a call from his wife working in a supermarket in Narre Warren South - not far from his home. "Have you got some fire trucks coming?" she asked. "We don't have any left," Mr Owen replied. In the meantime, fire crews and appliances were being ferried across from the Bellerine Peninsula as urgent support. The local crews were "stretched to our maximum capacity" tackling blazes breaking out throughout the region, such as Cranbourne, Narre Warren North and Eastlink. "If we had another fire of any significance we would have struggled," Mr Owen recalled. "It could have gone horribly wrong but it didn't." The harrowing events on Black Saturday are etched deeply. Looking back, Mr Owen feels many in the community underestimated the dire conditions and warnings. They thought they could get through "just one day".
Trevor Owen at Dandenong CFA ahead of the 10-year Black Saturday anniversary. 189776 Mr Owen had felt an impending danger. The Bunyip Ridge fire had been burning for five days and was set to jump out of control. In the lead-up, fires in Frankston and Dandenong South had moved at astonishing speed. "We knew we were in serious trouble. We did everything we could to people how serious it was. "It showed up our vulnerability in terms of
Take Nothing for Granted By Carol and Andrew Miszkowiec Poem: So many people said to us Your so lucky you survived, Yes it's only a house or possessions inside, But that day a piece of your life you once had, just got taken and died, The following days are bleak, The nights so long and dark, To feel safe again is what you seek, You try to smile, But your heart is screaming with denial, You long for things that now are gone,
You try so hard to keep pushing on You go through the motions, one day at a time, it just feels like your dreaming, we tell our selves one day we'll be fine, Then Weeks, months and years soon go by, 10 years on, how time flies, The mornings are bright, The days now shine, We will never forget the memories this day brings, From ashes to living we now celebrate everything. listening to authorities and messaging." It's "naive" to think there will never be another Black Saturday, he says. Despite the better technology, equipment and co-operation between fire agencies and the traumatic lessons. Victoria remains one of the most fire-prone areas in the world. The fire season starts earlier and ends later.
Picture: ROB CAREW "People need to really understand the environment we live in "If we don't get some rain in the next three weeks and get really strong hot northerly days, we could be in serious trouble. "That's why we're doing all we can to put out the fires we've got. "People think when we say things it's the old 'Cry Wolf'. We don't cry wolf."
Black Saturday 10 years on From page 1. Within a matter of minutes, their home was engulfed in flames and burnt to the ground. "Not a single item did we have to our name, except for the clothes on our backs. Not even shoes," Mrs Miszkowiec said. "Our life was gone. Only ashes left." Mrs Miszkowiec said the immediate days that followed were "sleepless nights and constant breakdowns". "There was an overwhelming fear of helplessness," she said. "The unknown of what awaits in the future, the prospect of starting a whole new life with not a scrap or remnant from the past, nowhere to live and nowhere to belong, including every piece of our identities was gone to the extent Andrew was told he is a non-citizen of this country he was classed as an alien. "We had no access to any bank accounts etc. Overall it was horrendous to try to begin putting some normality back into our lives." Mrs Miszkowiec said, "The only bright star in the horizon was the constant support and love from family and friends and in days to follow, strangers." Alike many residents of Narre Warren South, the Miszkowiec family did not have a fire plan. "We really didn't think suburbia would burn like it did that day," she said. "Had the grass out the back underneath the powerlines been maintained, the results would have been different with no overgrown grass to fuel the fire." Mr and Mrs Miszkowiec became close friends with their neighbours following the incident. "While our neighbours didn't lose their
house, the smoke damage was horrible and every day after they had to wake up to the sight of burnt carnage and the smell of wet ashes which was disgusting," Mrs Miszkowiec said. "They eventually moved out. It wasn't the same living there. The fear that it could happen again is unimaginable." 10 years on, the Miszkowiec family doesn't think they will ever overcome what happened on that day. "The smell of smoke sends total panic through your whole body," she said. "The mention of catastrophic weather brings on panic attacks. "We couldn't rebuild on that property. We sold the land and moved to a house with no grassland around, just houses." The Miszkowiec family takes nothing for granted and leaves copies of special items at a family member's house in fear of losing everything again. "Some days we miss things and on special occasions, like a photo board for one of the kids 21st birthday reminds us that we don't have those baby photos anymore we don't have the past in print, only in our minds," she said. "But we move on one day at a time and our new house becomes a home. We take lots of photos. "Life goes on but with a different approach to everything we do." Mrs Miszkowiec said her and her family is very humbled by the way family friends and total strangers cared about what they were going through. "We will forever remember this date and the beautiful people we have come in contact with through such devastation," she said. Thursday, 7 February, 2019

Black Saturday 10 years on Front line of fire response Special commemorative edition
By Brendan Rees Devon Meadows CFA brigade captain Andrew Swain remembers sending firefighters away on strike teams on Black Saturday as "very stressful." "That decision always weighs heavy until they return," he says. "You are sending members away from their families into danger." He says the lead up to Black Saturday was a very hot week and the "warnings reflected that." "I along with a lot of members still remember that day like it was yesterday." Mr Swain, who is still the captain of the brigade, had the task of assigning members to their Tanker 1 and field command vehicle to fight fires across the state, while their Tanker 2 "was running from local job to local job." "The crew on tanker 1 said it was the worst fire conditions they have ever seen, and most of the crew that I sent had more than 20 years' experience each," Mr Swain said. His crew attended the Lynbrook fires where residents tried to defend their homes using buckets and wheelie bins full of water. A number of houses were destroyed. Mr Swain says there was also a mulch fire that started near the old tip in Cranbourne, and "Tanker 2 was the only available vehicle to extinguish that fire." "Fire behaviour was something that we have never seen before so our thoughts on training for fires did change after that day. "The thought will be the fact that lives and property were lost and even though they did the best they could, they always feel that if only they could have done that little extra," Mr Swain said. Adding to the emotion on the day for Mr Swain was the devastation the bushfire left behind in Marysville. "My family owned a house in Marysville for 35 years and only sold it 12 months before black Saturday," he says. "So the news that Marysville was all but wiped out when I spent my childhood up there was very emotional."

Devastating fire came within a metre of their home By Brendan Rees A family who were caught up in a Narre Warren South fire on Black Saturday count themselves lucky. Sue and Geoff Herbert were at a wedding on Saturday 7 February, when a fire tore through their street in Langbourne Drive. "We were very, very lucky. It came within a metre of the actual house," Ms Herbert said. They praised neighbours, some who stood on roofs, with buckets of water and garden hoses "to save as many houses as they could." "The good thing was how the community came together...people came from everywhere. "People were using wheelie bins and everything to try and fight the fires," she said. At the time, police said the fire, believed to be deliberately lit, started along Coral Drive near Ormond Road at 5pm. A wind change at 5.42pm, according to a 2009 Victorian Royal Commission Report, caused the fire on Coral Drove to head towards Langbourne Drive. Houses caught in the blaze on Langbourne Drive were relatively news houses built on suburban-sized blocks positioned very close together. Ms Herbert says it was "some miracle that the fire apparently swung round in the wind and went back out into the paddocks." The Herberts lost part of their backyard including their children's cubbyhouse, but others were not so lucky. "It was very hard, coming home and seeing the devastation of the street, and to know our house was still standing - that took a lot out of us," Ms Herbert said. "You feel sad in the other sense because others lost theirs." Allan Appleman was one of the neighbours 32 STAR NEWS

She said her family was still haunted by the devastation of the day 10 years on, adding it was a "big learning curve for us all." "Every time we have those really strong winds in those really hot days it does bother me a bit. "We are still living here and we still do get very worried, especially with everything going on at the moment, it gets very scary. "We're constantly getting onto the council to make sure they keep a fire break which they have been," Ms Herbert said. "We've educated the kids, we've educated ourselves. "It's mother-nature, and if it's going to happen, whether there's a fire break or not - it's going to happen."

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region
Nicole designs her world By Narelle Coulter Berwick fashion entrepreneur Nicole Westmorland wants her customers to care for the planet while curating their wardrobe. In December, 23 year old Nicole launched her eponymous textile business - Westmorland. The business is based in two rooms of her parents’ Berwick home. She describes Westmorland as part of the slow fashion movement, where garments and homewares are handmade using environmentally sustainable practices or are upcycled from old garments or discarded pieces of fabric. Nicole said she had always wanted to launch her own brand, and after two years working for fast fashion giant Cotton On, she decided to take the plunge. She said she learnt a lot from the hugely successful Geelong based Cotton On, but found it “creatively crippling”. “I love my own aesthetic. I found it hard to pump out commercial designs because it was not my personal taste. My aesthetic is very bright, colourful, not very commercial.” After two years in the fast fashion world, she took some time out to travel and “clear my mind” before returning home to launch her own brand. “I was working on it behind the scenes while I was working full time so I was very busy, but I was very determined and really want to make something of it. “Travel was good. It let me freshen up and come back with a clear mind.” Unfettered by the demands and constraints of the corporate fashion world, Nicole felt free to create designs true to her own style which she described as “very young and bold, very vivid and individual”. “I don’t like to follow trends. I really like to concentrate on sustainability. There are issues with fast fashion which are not great for the earth. I try not to focus on trends, which is easy in terms of my style which is not very on trend
Berwick fashion entrepreneur Nicole Westmorland. 189255 or commercial anyway. “My pieces are individual, they don’t go out of style and I hope people will love them for a long time.” The Westmorland range includes screen printed tote bags and t-shirts, cushions, framed lithographs , upcycled clothing and a category Nicole calls Dog Stuff - waterproof jackets and leashes for pooches. She said she was always a crafty kid. Her mum tells a story of when Nicole’s kindergarten teacher called her in to see a young Nicole at work. “Apparently I had an easel set up while everyone else was playing, and I was painting and I would stand back and look at the painting and go ‘no no no’ and go back to it and

keep painting,” Nicole said, laughing. She taught herself to sew when she was in primary school, making little bags and simple tops for her sisters and friends. “I’ve always been a maker. I used to make jewellery, anything I could get my hands on.” After doing well in her VCE at Berwick Secondary College, she studied for a Bachelor of Textile Design at RMIT, all the while dreaming about starting her own business. ‘I has always been my dream to own my own small business, making and designing my own stuff makes me really happy.” She is quickly learning that being in business involves more than being creative. She is slowly learning about finance and marketing. “I have never been great at numbers, but I
am confident and believe in myself. I am passionate and determined to make it work.” Nicole said she is “almost making money” after absorbing the usual start-up costs associated with a new business. The launch of Westmorland was held at new Berwick entertainment space, Poker Face, late last year. She is now concentrating on promoting the brand through Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest. Nicole sent pieces of her work to carefully targeted “influencers” who have helped promote Westmorland on their feeds, among them a graphic artist based in Brunswick and a DJ and MTV personality. “There is so much you can learn on line these days. There are girl boss websites and young entrepreneurs and blogs and that sort of stuff. “ Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Girl and Girlboss Media is one of Nicole’s role models. The book Girl Boss sits on the shelf in her studio. “She started her brand from nothing and that was really inspiring.” In the next 12 months Nicole wants to narrow her product range to discover her “true brand”. “I want to find out what is Westmorland. Clarity would be the best thing. I want to find out who is my market, who is my customer and then cater for them.” In five years she wants Westmorland to be a well- known, specific product range “even if it’s just a range of t-shirts with my designs”. “I’d love to be manufacturing in Australia and maybe have someone working with me.” Nicole is determined to follow her passion wherever it may lead. “Everyone thought I was mad, quitting my amazing job and going into business. My biggest challenge is being brave. “You just have to start because if you don’t try you won’t know. I know what I am capable of so I just have to keep moving.”
Night dogs see the lighting By Brendan Rees Cranbourne Greyhound Racing track will shine under new lights after the club installed new energy-saving LED lighting. The upgrade at the Grant Street complex will mean an electrical saving cost of about 55 per cent. “These new LED lights are more environmentally friendly and more economic,” Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club chief executive Amanda Cameron said. “We also believe they will be better for the welfare of the greyhounds racing at night as they have brighter lighting for racing with a better coverage.“ The new lighting was made thanks to a grant from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund. Castle Electrical won the contract to carry out the installation with Carrum Downs based Plusrite Australia supplying 400 watt LED floodlights with special optical lens. Plusrite Australia managing director Ross Herdman said when power was lost with the old technology there would be up to a 20 minute start-up time before the lights would turn on again. “With LED you can turn them off and on instantly and will start immediately,” he said. “I know in the past Cranbourne racing codes have lost racing because of lights taking a long time to restart.” He added with the new LED lighting, only 26,800 watts of power would be used meaning a power saving of about 65 per cent.

SPORT
And they’re set for the Cup Australia's biggest country greyhound series comes to an exciting conclusion this Saturday in Cranbourne. The third annual TRFM Gippsland Carnival will be decided at the Spolly's Syndications Group 2 Cranbourne Cup. The carnival has succeeded in drawing huge crowds to Gippsland and has quickly become a highlight of the Victorian greyhound racing calendar. This year's series consisted of three country cups beginning with the Sale Cup on Boxing Day, before moving to the Warragul Cup on 12 January. The 45th Cranbourne Cup will be a highlight of the series with the first and second place getters from last weekend's heats producing a spectacular field to compete for the $47,000 top prize. The qualifiers include three Cranbournetrained greyhounds, including Pearcedale trainer Seona Thompson's two greyhounds Azkaban and Poke the Bear; Thompson is the only trainer with multiple greyhounds in the final. Poke the Bear is looking for redemption from Box 2 after finishing third in the 2018 Cranbourne Cup. He is currently Australia's premier sprinter and if he wins will surpass $500,000 in prizemoney. Thompson's other sprinter, Azkaban, is also on a winning streak having won his last three races. This is his first country cup final, but he is no stranger to victory having won last year's Victorian Cup on the Cranbourne Cup night. The fastest heat time was set by Orson Allen, who clocked in just .01sec from the track record set by Pop the Cork in 2016; this exceptional greyhound, trained by 25-year-old Correy Grenfell, is one of Australia's most decorated sprinters and is a country cup regular. In contrast, winning the Cranbourne Cup would be a career highlight for trainers Ian Brown, Michelle Nolan, Paul Abela and Graham James. Ian Brown's greyhound, Wears Woodleigh, may be the least experienced in the field with just 19 starts, but he showed a huge display of power in his heats when he jumped last out of the boxes and used the outside track to storm into second one length behind powerful contender, Poke the Bear. Michelle Nolan is a nurse by trade and Hightan is her first greyhound to make it to a country cup final; Hightan, the other Cranbourne trained greyhound and only female in the race, is on a career high after five consecutive victories leading to the Cup. Paul Abela is also hoping to find a country cup victory after his greyhound, Huxley, maintained an early lead in his heat despite being chased by start duo Blue Striker and Hasten Slowly. Peter Akathiotis' Blue Striker placed second in the heat; this consistent racer has placed 19 from 20 starts.
Orson Allen won his Cranbourne Cup heat in near track record time.

Pictures: COURTESY OF GREYHOUND RACING VICTORIA Finally, Gippsland trainer, Graham James, is keen for a group win after his greyhound Sure to Excite placed fourth at the Carnival's Warragul Cup last month. In addition to the exciting 520m Cranbourne Cup final, the night will also feature the $10,000 Victoria Cup (699m) and the $5000 Van Echteld (311m). Throughout the series, points have been allotted for first, second and third place getters and the highest point scorer will be crowned
the Gippsland Champion at the end of the night. As with the rest of the Gippsland Carnival, the Cranbourne Cup will be a great night of entertainment for the whole family with spectacular racing, live-music from Bosley, free kids' activities, dining and bar options including the Trackside Party Paddock, where you can meet Dane Swan, former Collingwood AFL player. There is free entry from 5pm and racing kicks off after that.

Chasemore’s Bears were kings of the MCG for a day By Nick Creely Berwick have become the second Dandenong District Cricket Association club to take out the coveted Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash, after defeating Sunshine United at the MCG on Tuesday morning. The Bears join Cranbourne from two years ago to take home the silverware, with Matthew Chasemore's side controlling proceedings from the outset to further cement themselves as one of the most successful Twenty20 sides in local cricket. Sent in to bat, openers Nathan Pilon (17) fresh off some truly frightening form - and Jordan Cleland (51) got off to a fast start to slam on 55 for the first wicket, before both stars were eventually removed, with the latter doing plenty of damage on the wide expanses of the ground. But Chasemore got going to once again highlight that he's not lost any of his touch, cracking three sixes on his way to a matchdefining 67 off 35 balls, capping off what has been an extremely consistent tournament with 214 runs at an average of 53.5. In fact, Chasemore was part of the Cranbourne side that also 40 STAR NEWS

tasted victory on the 'G only a few years ago The Bears posted 5/161 off their 20 overs, an excellent Twenty20 team display, which was clearly a strong total on a ground with large boundaries. Quick Brendan Rose broke through quickly to snuff out any chance of Sunshine chasing down the runs, snaring three quick wickets to leave them reeling at 3/29 off seven, in a stunning spell of 3/9 off his four overs. The former Casey-South Melbourne club champion showcased his impressive white ball skills once again as he continues to build into the back-end of the season. Despite some fight by the Sunshine side, Jack Phillips (2/24), Cory Bevan (1/29) and Isaiah Jassal (1/31) helped restrict them to just 7/120 off their 20 overs. A pair of proud Lakers By Nick Creely Lynbrook Cricket Club pair Odil Perera and Raheel Bostan are undoubtedly talented, but crucially, have the thirst for hard work and dedication, as well as the passion for the game they have grown up loving. The talented youngsters now get the opportunity to showcase their talents for Victoria Metro Under 15s in the National Championships, starting on 7 February in Brisbane, and will be representing the Lakers, the community and the DDCA as they look to pull on the Victorian colours with pride. Bostan - a Lynbrook junior also playing Premier Cricket with Dandenong - told Star News Group of the tremendous pride he feels ahead of a big week of cricket. "It's reward more than anything to be completely honest, it's a reflection of all the tough work that I have done over the past years that have led me to this point," he said. "I am extremely proud, and hope to do my parents, club and region proud as well." Describing himself as "versatile" cricketer, a bit of 'nudger' with the bat and a bowler that relishes the middle overs, Bostan has starred for the Lakers' Under 15 side this season, and has also recently cracked into the seconds at Dandenong, where he has shown some tremendous signs that he will be a force into the future. He is grateful for his home club and the support they've provided him, but pointed out to two key figures who have given him inspiration. "Lynbrook has been a great help in this long journey - when I arrived here at 14, they did everything they could to make me prepared for the future, often given me helpful tips and not being afraid to challenge me," he said. "I really look up to Shane Warne and Brett Forsyth - who's our Premier ones bat. Warney
Raheel Bostan and Odil Perera are excited to be representing Victoria Metro. 189855 because of his ability to out think batsmen and Brett because of how he plays textbook shots so cleanly and elegantly." Bostan said his love for the game stems back to his childhood in Pakistan, and has fostered into something he now lives and breathes. family has been the catalyst for his passion for the game. "Cricket has always been in our household as my father, Himal, used to play first class cricket in Sri Lanka and my sister, Thenushi, who plays cricket too," he said. "The passion grew in the backyard where my sister and I would play endless hours of cricket, batting, bowling and eventually hitting the ball to the next door neighbours house." Perera said he doesn't look up to anyone specifically, and likes to learn from a range of different people. "I don't really look up to anyone specifically, every cricketer is different and I learn from everyone's different aspects," he said. "If I had to choose one person, it would be Virat Kohli as one of his uniqueness is his aggression towards the game." Playing for the Lakers' Under 17 side, Perera only recently joined the club, but loves the community aspect of his new home. "I joined this club halfway through the season and the club has been inviting giving me the opportunity to be a part of the community," he said. "The people associated with this team are always striving to give us the best cricketing experience hence I am really thankful for that." As he too jets off for the experience of a lifetime, Perera had plenty of influences he would like to thank. "I would like to thank all the coaches and clubs who have played a part in the cricketer I am today," he said. "For all my coaches too, especially Aldo Kornor and Bathiya Perera who have helped polish my cricket skills. I would also like to thank Star News Group for giving me this opportunity." Similar to Odil Perera, a gun Lynbrook junior who is getting some Premier Cricket experience with Casey-South Melbourne, he feels overwhelmed and extremely proud to be representing his state. "The feeling is overwhelming and I feel extremely proud to represent my state," he said. "I'm really excited to e spend the next week in Brisbane/Sunshine Coast playing cricket with my teammates and sharing some memorable experiences with them. Describing himself as a batting all-rounder, Perera is an accumulator of runs who also bowls leg-spin. "I am always looking to challenge myself and go test out the limits in the game of cricket," he said of his playing style. Perera's cricketing pedigree is strong - coming from a cricket mad country - and said his

The Melbourne Demons fell agonisingly short of a win in their first game of the 2019 AFLW season, falling to the Fremantle Dockers by four points at Casey Fields on Sunday afternoon. In blistering heat, the Demons kicked the opening two goals of the game - thanks to Aliesha Newman and Kate Hore - but the Dockers responded with the next three majors to head into the first break with a five-point lead, 3.1 (19) to 2.2 (14). The Dockers slammed on three goals to one in the second term to boast a 20-point lead at half time, 6.4 (40) to 3.2 (20). The third term was when the Demons -
kicking with the wind - really got into the game. Co-captain Shelley Scott got the scoreboard ticking over with an early major and kick started a dominant five-goal to zero term to see Melbourne enter the final term with a 14-point lead. The Dockers kicked with a strong breeze in the final term and took full advantage. Fremantle booted three goals to zero and when Gemma Houghton booted a major with just over five minutes remaining, the Dockers had the lead and held on for a four-point win, 9.5 (59) to 8.7 (55). Melbourne was led by Karen Paxman, Lauren Pearce, Lily Mithen and Elise O'Dea. Thursday, 7 February, 2019

Cricket community unites By Hayley Wildes In the sunshine of Australia Day, the Carlisle Park Cricket Club hosted a special day, one that highlighted what can be achieved when the local community comes together as one for a great cause. In the third edition of the '42 Ball Bash', 10 teams competed for glory, but more importantly, they came together to raise funds for the '42For42' not-for-profit organisation. 42For42 aims to help struggling veterans and their families by building a memorial dedicated to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. 42For42 signifies the 41 soldiers killed in Afghanistan and the 42nd is to represent the soldiers lost and continue to lose to suicide, as well as those who have returned with injuries and mental illness. The third edition of the event was the biggest yet and in an amazing effort by all, $14362 was raised. That takes the total over the three years to over $30000. Mike McKenna, West Gippsland Cricket Association Vice President, talked about the day and how the community spirit shone bright in a fun afternoon for all ages. "It was just a massive day and we had about 500-600 people roll through over the course of the day," McKenna said. "There were kids everywhere, both boys and girls playing, and it was just an absolutely fun day. There were teams that had parents playing with their kids and it was a really family-centric day.
The crowds enjoyed a special day at Carlisle Park, raising funds for 42For42. Pictures: SUPPLIED
It was a competitive day of cricket at Carlisle Park, but everyone was there to raise funds for 42For42. "As well as that, it really got back to the reason that we were there; for 42For42 and to raise funds for a memorial." The memorial, which requires $100,000 in fundraising, will be in the grounds of Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, beside the Anglican Church of Australia and will provide an opportunity to honour those touched by the Afghanistan war.
There was plenty of cricket played; eight games in total, and Kooweerup came out on top over Cranbourne in the final. "You had 42 balls from one end, go out and have a hit and field and then when it got down to the business end, it happened to be Kooweerup and Cranbourne Cricket Clubs playing off in the final," McKenna said. "Kooweerup won the chocolates and Mark
Cooper and his men donated their $500 winnings back to 42For42, which was a wonderful touch." There were returned soldiers who attended the event and McKenna saw the positive effect such a day had on them. "There were some times during the day when I sat with returned soldiers and it was quite emotional to hear their stories of how they've lost their friends through suicide and what this sort of a day does for them," he said. "It was just a great day, it was an absolutely wonderful day for the community and to raise that kind of money is just phenomenal." A special thank you must go out to all the volunteers and those who donated or sponsored the event; Central Healthcare Services, West Gippsland Cricket Association, Evolution Concrete Service, Bakers Delight Casey central, Highview Accounting and Financial, Great White Spark Electrical, Complete Frames and Cranbourne Turf Club.
Cranbourne, Narre suffer defeats By Hayley Wildes

CRANBOURNE BOWLS In Division 2, playing on a slick green at Berwick, it was a challenge for both sides and Cranbourne started well but Berwick pegged them back and the result was an exciting finish that went down to the very last end. However, it was better news for the next three Cranbourne sides all recording good wins. Not such good news in Division 1 midweek ladies, where Cranbourne was outplayed by a strong Edithvale side. During the week, Cranbourne was saddened by the loss of one of its highly-regarded and esteemed club member in Lindsay Coate who will be deeply missed by all. Side 1 - Division 2 Club Chief, John McKenna paid tribute to Lindsay Coate before the start of the game and then Cranbourne played as though they had an extra player on their side, racing away to a 17-shot lead by the tea break. Unfortunately, the extreme heat seemed to take a toll on some of its players and with Berwick coming back hard it was always going to be a tough finish. Skip Frank Byrne had his rink of John McKenna and Shane Morrison in great form all day and with the last end to be played in the match, Frank had an opportunity to draw the match but it was not to be and Berwick ended up winning by three shots. Frank and his crew were the best rink on the day, finishing seven shots up. Cranbourne 66 (4 points) lost to Berwick 69. Side 2 - Division 3 Cranbourne recorded a great 12-shot win against Pakenham, thanks to Skip Steve Hickson and his crew of Bill Bradbury, Brian Biasci and Stan Myers who won by the same margin. Asked after the game who was the best player on the day, they all replied that they all played well.
Cranbourne 84 (16 points) defeated Pakenham 72. Side 3 - Division 5 Skip Ron Shields was in excellent form, thanks to his team of Barry Graham, Karen Hickson and Brian Legg, winning by seven shots. For all those following Skip Sofio Raiti, who has been winning by huge margins over the past four matches, we have to report that his run has come to an end, but he still won by four shots on his rink. Cranbourne 90 (18 points) defeated Dandenong Club 72. Side 4 - Division 7 Side 4 had some revenge on Berwick after Side 1's loss, scoring an impressive 29-shot win. Skip Rob Sorensen and his rink of Bill Sheriff, Brian Turton and Gwen Scott were the big winners of the day, winning by 19 shots. Cranbourne 97 (15 points) defeated Berwick 68. Side 5 - six-a-side No joy for the six-a-side team, losing by 12 shots. Cranbourne 26 (0 points) lost to Black Rock 38. Ladies Division 1 The last three games were played in very hot conditions which has certainly been a factor in making it difficult for the ladies side to perform at their best. With all three rinks losing against Edithvale, Cranbourne now have to regain their mojo quickly against Montmorency, who they play at home this week to stay in touch of finishing the season in the top two. Cranbourne Ladies 44 (0 points) lost to Edithvale 77. The mid-week bowls results were: Cranbourne 2 Division 2 open 72 (14 points) defeated Hampton Park 45. Cranbourne 3 Division 3 open 68 (14 points) defeated Churchill Waverley 44.
Cranbourne 4 six-a-side open 32 (2 points) lost to Narre Warren 39. NARRE WARREN It was another mixed and disappointing day for Narre Warren mid-week bowlers, with two losses and a win; all by less than 10 shots each. Division 2 played at Cardinia Waters for an eight-shot loss. Keith Mark, Wilma Haringsma, Colin Groom and Zak Storm had a good 3012 win, while Reg Young, Judy Naughton, Arthur Scheurer and Wilma Stevenson just went down, 26-21. Wally Finlayson, Iain Stevenson, Rod Lane and Jim Millar had a bad day, going down 30-9. Narre Warren (1) 2-60 lost to Cardinia Waters (1) 14-68. Division 3 were at home, but suffered a loss against Mulgrave. Stan Bulmer, Gary Wilson, Alan Mark and Geoff Ampt won 18-13, while Arthur Fitt, Janice Moran, Enid Gibb and Philip Howard (22-20) and Les Clement, Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire and Peter Groom (23-14) both lost. Narre Warren (2) 2-52 lost to Mulgrave (4) 14-58. The six-a-side team were also at home, taking on Cranbourne and had another win. Jacqueline Moody, Brian Fraser and Andy Tobler won well (26-15), while Susan Hawkins, Jeanette Cox and Glen Cadman just fell, 17-13. Narre Warren (3) 2-39 defeated Cranbourne (4) 2-32. Saturday pennant saw only one of the four teams win. At Burden Park, Division 3 had a loss. Erik Luyters, Colin Groom, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar just went down 19-18, while Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Rod Lane and Cam Lee (23-19), Eric Sdenham, Zade Bulmer, Iain Stevenson and Wilma Stevenson (20-14) and John Wright, Tracey Storm, Percy Herath and Zak Storm (20-14) all lost. Narre Warren (1) 0-65 lost to Burden Park (2) 18-82.
Narre Warren's Alan Mark, Keith Mark and Jim Kempf in front of the club's greens which are being replaced with new synthetic greens. Division 4 had a tight five-shot win. The heroes for the day were the team of Keith Mark, Alan Mark, Jim Kempf and Norm Hosmer who won 35-18. The other three rinks had small losses; Peter Groom, Graham Dodd, Stan Robinson and Carl Lapham (19-18), Wally Finlayson, David Wilkinson, Geoff Miller and Ralph Devonshire (18-16) and Wilma Haringsma, Ernesto Vergara, Philip Howard and John Zanon (19-10). Narre Warren (2) 12-79 defeated Cardinia Waters (1) 6-74. Division 5 suffered a loss to Edithvale at home. Arthur Fitt, Pauline Kempf, Paul McNamara and Peter Lister won 20-19, and Stan Bulmer, Darren Moore, John Uren and Geoff Ampt survived for a 17-16 win. Stan Birkett, Peter Castricum, Wayne Grimsey and John Green just went down 12-15, but Leo McGeary, Joe McGuire, Sharon Bull and Brent Grigg failed to fire after the break and lost 30-17. Narre Warren (3) 4-71 lost to Edithvale (4) 14-86. Division 7 travelled to Cardinia Waters, and although they were players short of a full team, had to give a forfeit when some players suffered with the heat. Narre warren (4) 0-0 lost to Cardinia Waters (2) 18-15 (forfeit).

Look out for sporty Eclipse By Alistair Kennedy The past 12 months have been very successful for Mitsubishi with the Japanese importer moving up to fourth place in overall Australian vehicle sales behind Toyota, Mazda and Hyundai. With sales of just over 7500 units during 2018 much of that success can be attributed to the most recent addition to the range, the Eclipse Cross which was launched at the end of 2017. Eclipse Cross is the fifth member of the Mitsubishi SUV family. It snuggles into the space between the compact ASX and the mediumlarge Outlander (all three sit on what is effectively the same platform), with the Pajero Sport and the large Pajero at the top of the tree. Between them these SUVs accounted for 61.4 per cent of total Mitsubishi sales in 2018. The popular Triton pickup was the biggest seller for the year with 29.2% leaving the traditional passenger cars Lancer and Mirage with a mere 9.5%. Eclipse Cross was launched in December 2017 with three variants, LS 2WD, Exceed 2WD and Exceed AWD. A new entry level ES 2WD was added in September 2018 allowing the starting price to squeeze just under the psychological $30,000 level. Eclipse Cross has the attractive coupe-like roofline that’s currently in vogue and gives the wagon an attractive and stylish profile. At the front there’s a big and bold version of the Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield grille that’s framed by twin LED headlamps, daytime running lights and recessed foglamps and turn indicators. The rear windscreen is split by a distinctive horizontal bar. All models get 18-inch alloy wheels and front foglamps. The flagship Exceed models
Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SUV has head-turning looks. add auto-levelling LED headlights and dual panoramic sunroofs although only the front section can be opened. The interior of the Eclipse Cross has a neat and functional design with most features easily accessible. The instrument panel has carbon and piano black accents as do the steering wheel, centre console and door panels. The lower dash, centre console, arm rests and air vents all have a high finish silver trim. Eclipse Cross only comes as a five-seater. If you need a third row then look to the Mitsubishi Outlander. Clever design provides the feel of a larger vehicle with plenty of head, leg and elbowroom in the front. The seats are wide and comfortable enough for long-distance driving,

if you want power adjustment you’ll need to step up to the Exceed models. The steering wheel can be adjusted for both height and reach. There’s plenty of space in the rear seats with the added convenience of eight-step sliding and reclining adjustments. They can be moved up to 200 mm to adjust between rear legroom and boot space. Taller occupants will appreciate the tilt feature of the rear seats. Sadly, there are no air vents in the rear seats. The boot can cater for between 341 and 448 litres with the rear 60:40 seatbacks in place and up to 1122 litres when they’re folded. Storage includes a large double-compartment glovebox, centre console with sunglass
tray and underfloor cargo box. All models are powered by a new-design lighter 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine with peak power of 110 kW, and 250 Nm of torque from 2000 to 3500 rpm. At this stage Mitsubishi Australia has no plans to add the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, available in overseas markets, to the range. All models have a CVT automatic. If you don’t agree with the computer’s choice of ratio there are eight programmed manual overrides you can select with paddle shifters.
