The 2019/20 Minor Capital Works at Community Facilities Program is now open and local community groups are encouraged to apply. The City of Casey will launch its year-long Art Spaces Program on Sunday 24 February with more than 50 local artists work to be displayed. The program will feature work across the Bunjil Place Library Art Space, Cranbourne Library Art Space, Doveton Library Art Space and Endeavour Hills Art Space.

IN BRIEF Young girl struck by car A primary school aged girl was taken to hospital after she was hit by a car on the Princes Highway in Berwick. Paramedics were called to reports that a car hit a pedestrian at about 5:40pm on Friday 8 February. The girl was taken by road ambulance to the Royal Children's Hospital in a stable condition. She had a serious injury to her leg, and a minor injury to her head.
Clyde Road armed robbery Police have arrested a 34-year-old Berwick man in relation to an alleged armed robbery which occurred in Berwick on 10 February. Investigators have been told a man entered a service station on Clyde Road about 10.30pm. It is alleged he produced a handgun and forced the attendant to hand over cash before fleeing from the store. Excellent police work resulted in an offender being arrested early this morning and a warrant being executed in Melrose Court, Berwick. Police allege that an imitation firearm and cash was located during the search. The 34-year-old has been charged with armed robbery and is expected to face court.

By Jessica Anstice A moving ceremony marking a decade since the Black Saturday bushfires was held in Narre Warren South on Saturday, February 9. Members of the community, volunteer CFA members, community groups including the Endeavour Hills Lions Club and Hampton Park Community House, City of Casey councillors including Mayor Amanda Stapledon, Cr Rosalie Crestani and Rex Flannery, and those affected by the Black Saturday fires attended to reflect on the 10 years of rebuilding and recovering from the deadliest fires in Australian history. Thanks to organisers Carol and Andrew Miszkowiec, Mark Dickinson and Wendy Linsen, the event raised $35,000 on the day and more than $47,000 when the fundraising concluded. The group gathered inside Narre Warren South IGA due to weather conditions before signing and attaching yellow ribbons beside the memorial tree that was planted in memory of all that was lost on that day. Mrs Miszkowiec said the memorial was very moving for her, Mr Miskowiec, their family and their close friends that came. "Listening to everyone's recount of the day was quite emotional for us," she said. "I read my poem certainly struggling to get through it as the poem reflected the last 10 years of our lives. "I believe every person was affected in some way on that day." City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon reflected on Black Saturday in her speech during the ceremony. "Australia and its people are hardy; we are tough, strong and resilient. Australia is not immune to bushfires and other emergency events; we have experienced our fair share of these and will continue to keep experiencing these events into the future. "But Black Saturday was something never experienced before especially here in Casey and Narre Warren South more specifically." Ms Stapledon thanked everyone who attended. "From these darkest days, 10 years ago, we continue to hear of the heroic efforts complete strangers undertook to save the lives of others," she said.
"If it wasn't for these individuals, I believe that many more lives would have been lost during this disaster. "My fellow councillors and I would like to thank everyone here today, our emergency service personal who continue to give their time and skills to help others, and all Australians for continuing to make our country such a wonderful place to live and raise a family." Hampton Park Community House representative Tania Sacco said not many people know about the many people in the Narre Warren area that lost their homes. "The rain on the day was an ironic reminder that our weather can indeed be fickle," Ms Sacco said. "It was a celebration of life and there is now a commemorative bench seat with a tree to grow and give shade as an ongoing reminder to the community."
Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing 49-year-old Kenneth Richardson. Mr Richardson was last seen at a hospital on Kangan Drive in Berwick about midnight on 9 February. It is believed he may be driving a 2004 white Ford ute, registration 1NO 1BZ. Police have concerns for his welfare due to a medical condition that requires medication. Mr Richardson is Caucasian in appearance with hazel eyes, grey hair and a medium build. He was last seen wearing a grey T-shirt and black pants. Police have also released an image of Mr Richardson in the hope someone recognises him and can provide information regarding his current whereabouts. Anyone with information about Mr Richardson is asked to contact Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111.

Paramedic earns a medal Narre Warren paramedic Kathryn Eastwood was awarded the 2019 Ambulance Service Medal. Dr Eastwood has had a distinguished career in paramedicine, breaking new ground for paramedics. The award was established in 1999 as a way to recognise the distinguished service of men and women within Australia's ambulance system. Ambulance Victoria CEO, associate professor Tony Walker said Ms Eastwood had made a significant contribution to paramedic education and research, developing and delivering educational material for paramedic courses primarily in the area of anatomy, physiology and paramedic practice. "She developed and coordinated the cardiac intensive care unit for the postgraduate MICA paramedic course, which is the cornerstone for the MICA course," he said. "Her work has been integral to the development of Ambulance Victoria's personnel and her contributions have improved emergency response services for the community we serve." Dr Eastwood has been with Ambulance Victoria since 2000. She was the first paramedic to complete the Master of Emergency Health (MICA paramedic) degree and her research into mathematical capabilities of paramedic students has impacted on patient care, improving the skills of paramedics to ensure appropriate drug administration practices. She was awarded the prestigious Australia Postgraduate Award scholarship to undertake her PhD. The PhD research into Ambulance Victoria's Referral Service resulted in the expansion of Ambulance Victoria's international profile, allowing evidence-based research to highlight the operational structure and service delivery

Kirra Timms: The problem with people these days is they always have an excuse. If you can't understand basic signs you shouldn't have your license. Lindsay Marie: I was issued one this morning for parking in an actual parking spot in the correct hours and was only parked there for 30 minutes. Morsal Sa: My mum got fined here today $161. It's not fair and greedy, people are going there for medical treatment and there is literally no parking available besides the hospital which is a walk and costly. Some of these people don't have the money to afford such rip off fines, totally disgusting. Marie Jokanovic: My dad was in hospital for three months. Some days, my sister and I visited two times a day... Try if you can to calculate just parking fee expense. Frances Sadler: I understand the issue with parking for medical treatment, but the traffic problem on Kangan Drive during the no standing periods is severe. I don't know how an ambulance would be able to get through in an emergency. That alone I think would be more important an issue than having to pay for parking at the hospital. I agree though that a parking garage or something is desperately needed in that area. I do expect people to have to pay for it though. You can't have everything for free unfortunately.

The Berwick Bowling Club could benefit from $179,000 for local sporting infrastructure granted by the Federal Government. Member for La Trobe Jason Wood welcomed the announcement at the Berwick Bowling Club on Monday as part of the second $30 million round of the Liberal and Nationals Government's Community Sport Infrastructure Program. "The Liberal and Nationals Government understands that our success and prowess as a sporting nation begins with grassroots sports, which is why we have focused our investment on local grassroots sporting facilities such as the Berwick Bowling Club project," Minister for regional services, sport, local government and decentralisation Bridget McKenzie said. "As outlined in the National Sports Plan, Sport 2030, grassroots sports help drive increased participation and promote social, health and community benefits of physical activity and sport - a key priority for our government." A car was stolen from the Bunjil Place carpark in broad daylight on Monday. Car owner, Levi Sanders was working at Bunjil Place between 1pm and 5pm. At 5pm, he went to the carpark and saw the empty space and broken glass. "I was shocked. I'd purchased the white Nissan Pulsar from my Nan in Tasmania over 10 years ago, and never had a problem with it," Mr Sanders said. "The timing of the theft was also difficult, as I had to work remotely with my clients from Mornington this week. "This is a real problem as one of my main
points of difference as a business coach is that I prefer face to face and don't do much online or remote work unless it's absolutely necessary." Mr Sanders immediately went back to into Bunjil Place to see if there was any CCTV available, but was informed that the carpark wasn't covered. The vehicle was reported stolen to the Narre Warren Police Station. Overnight the car was spotted in several locations across Cranbourne, but by the time the police got there the car had moved on. Local firies at Grantville bush blaze Narre Warren Fire Brigade members responded to the Grantville fire on Monday 4 February. The Narre Warren Tanker appliance was deployed to the Granville fire with four crew members on board. A small number of Narre Warren Fire Brigade members also attended the fire in operational support roles such as incident manage-
ment and catering. The crew on the truck were deployed at 6.45am, working through the day before returning late at night. With hard-to-access areas and a lot of hot spots, crews had to deal with multiple flare ups with changing wind conditions.

Outdoor area opens By Brendan Rees A new outdoor recreation area has officially opened at Hampton Park Bowls Club, offering members and public a bigger space for entertainment. The new outdoor area also features a barbecue allowing members and the public to socialise, dine and relax. Federal Holt MP Anthony Byrne joined chair-person Neville Hendrie and president Steve Barnes from the Hampton Park Bowls Club to open the pavilion on Saturday 9 February. Mr Byrne's provided a $20,000 boost through the Stronger Communities Programme for the club to complete the project. "It was wonderful to witness members enjoying playing bowls and then after finishing their games walk over to the new outdoor recreation area to enjoy a meal with team mates," Mr Byrne said. He said new outdoor area would be of great value to the club and the local community. "Anyone can come down and enjoy a game of bowls and enjoy these new facilities. "Congratulations to the Hampton Park Bowls Club on building this outdoor pavilion and dining area; and it is a pleasure to see this Stronger Communities Grant make a real difference in the local community," Mr Byrne said.

Cheerful show of culture The Narre Warren South community celebrated at the annual Pongal Festival on Sunday, February 10. Celebrated by Tamils worldwide, the harvest festival (known as Pongal) is an important occasion to the Tamil population and marks the beginning of the harvest season. Farmers give thanks to nature for giving them a good harvest, and other people celebrate as a way of thanking nature and the farmers for providing them with food. Now in its eighth year, there was a variety of entertainment, traditional food stalls, games, arts, music and dances. One highlight of the event is the beginning of the traditional Pongal (rice pudding) cooking in large clay pots. Approximately 500 people attended throughout the day. Traditionally, at least, Pongal celebrations last for four days and is an important event on the Hindu calendar. The Pongal Festival held at Casey Central Town Park is staged each year by the Valluvar Foundation with help from state and local governments. "The Victorian government is a proud supporter of this wonderful Pongal Harvest event organised by the Valluvar foundation," Member for Narre Warren South Gary Maas said. "Whether you have come to Casey as a skilled migrant, refugee, student or other; the great work of the Valluvar Foundation volunteers have helped bridge gaps to bring our community together." The Valluvar Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organisation founded with the intention to serve the public by promoting, preserving and facilitating education in the Tamil language, culture (arts, dance and music) and heritage.

Swimming spirit on show By Jessica Anstice Around 800 staff and students from Nossal High School travelled to Doveton pool for their annual House Swimming Carnival on Tuesday. Under threatening skies and with a weather forecast that was predicting rain, wind and storms, students dressed in their house colours and cheered on the intrepid competitors who ignored the cold to focus on winning house points for their respective teams. "House competitions are an important part of the school program and staff and students are passionate about their houses and enthusiastically participate in numerous diverse activities and events throughout the year," Nossal High School principal Roger Page said. "Points are accumulated and count towards the awarding of the prestigious Page Cup at the annual Speech Night in November." The House Swimming Carnival is the first event for the year and is the first opportunity
for the new Year 9 students to join with their house teams to compete, support or organise the events on the day. The school generates enormous house spirit through such events and this was strongly evident this year when the storms hit soaking supporters and competitors alike and ruining signs and costumes. Unfortunately the chilling winds and showers persisted so the spectators reluctantly made their sodden return to school to warm up. Un-phased by the weather the 70 remaining intrepid competitors stayed on to complete their races, supported by some very cold and equally sodden teachers. "In spite of the weather the event was highly successful, hotly contested, and the spirit and participation of all students was (as always) positive and joyous," Mr Page said. At the end of the day the winning team was the mighty Phoenix House, throwing down the gauntlet for the other three houses for the forthcoming athletics carnival.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Helping hands and hearts By Brendan Rees A Dandenong employment service has found a solution with using plastic waste to help amputees. Envision, a not-for-profit charity that provides support to long-term and disadvantaged job-seekers, is delivering the Envision hands project which turns recycled plastic bottle tops into prosthetic hands for children in developing countries. To give them a helping hand, the Coca-Cola Foundation announced Envision would share $1.5 million in funding from Coca-Cola to support its Envision Hands upcycling project. "We're thrilled to be able to give back to the local communities we serve through the global Coca-Cola Foundation," Coca-Cola spokeswoman Sarah Prestwood said. Using 3D printers to create the prosthetic hands for those in need, Envision will train and support disadvantaged job seekers to help make the devices on-site. The funding will enable the collection of bottle tops, basic recycling processes and the design, creation and distribution of the prosthetic hands. Supervisor Renata of Hampton Park said it was highly rewarding seeing job seekers learn new skills. "Our job seekers were able to see the benefits of capturing the wasted resource of bottle caps, not only saving it from going to landfill, but turning it into a very useful item," Renata said, who asked not to publish her surname. Her team coordinated the 3D printing and the investigation of the properties of plastic lids. "It was extremely rewarding to see the knowledge and new skills gained by all and the teamwork that was built during the activity." Director of Envision Employment Services Sean Teer said his team decided to take action "when we realised we might be able to turn
those tops into something really beneficial." "We saw that plastic bottle tops were not being recycled and going into landfill," he said. "We now are collecting tops from around Melbourne and Victoria and sites like our Dandenong site will be involved in turning those
tops into hands/arms and also many other useful plastic recycled items. "This will also involve training long term unemployed in the latest 3D technology, he said, adding the project aimed to make 100 prosthetic hands for children.
"Envision is putting together a major fundraising campaign to now put all the elements of the project together including programs at schools and in the communities and donations will be sought to support this great environmental and humanitarian project," Mr Teer said.

Awesome Orson stars By Gerard Guthrie and Molly Haines Orson Allen celebrated the biggest win of his career on Saturday night, adding a deserved country cup triumph to his resume with a brilliant all-the-way victory in the Group 2 Spolly’s Syndication Cranbourne Cup Final (520 metres). Trained by 25-year-old Correy Grenfell, Orson Allen was making his fourth appearance in a provincial Cup, having previously contested finals at Geelong (second), Bendigo (fourth) and Warragul (sixth). Orson Allen’s previous feature titles were both won at Sandown in the Group 3 Shootout and Listed Australian Sprint. “This is what we train for - to get the rewards like this,” Grenfell said. The superbly-bred son of US sire, KC And All, and Group winner, Desalle Bale, Orson Allen was the fastest qualifier for the $47,000 to-the-winner Cranbourne Cup after a nearrecord 29.61-second heat victory just .01 outside Pop the Cork’s 520m benchmark. Drawn in box three, Orson Allen was the $3.20 second elect, behind Seona Thompson’s $1.70 favourite Poke The Bear (box two), with Poke The Bear’s kennelmate Azkaban ($9.10) the only other runner at single figures. Orson Allen came out running and Grenfell’s pre-race confidence was vindicated in breathtaking style as his greyhound opened up a race-winning lead in the back straight, going on to defeat Poke The Bear by more than four lengths in another scorching run of 29.77sec. “We’ve been desperate to get an inside box with him,” said Grenfell. “He’s been in plenty of Group races now and he probably should have won a few more than this. He’s got the ability. “We wanted everything to go right like it did last week. We weren’t real confident we were going to win this one but on the box draw we were definitely a bit more confident going into the race than we were in a few other Group races. He jumped to perfection tonight and won the race. “Poke The Bear is one of the best dogs going around at the moment and it’s good to see Orson Allen beat him - in that fashion too.” There was more good news for Avalonbased Grenfell at The Meadows when Orson Allen was confirmed as a starter and drew ideally in box two for the Group 1 Temlee (525m) to be held on Saturday on the opening night of the Australian Cup Carnival. “We could only have dreamt to have box two in a Temlee,” offered an upbeat Grenfell. “If he pulls up well and everything goes according to plan this week, he’s going to be a big show.”

She was Barcia Bale’s sister and she was a star in her own right, so I don’t think you can go past his breeding.” Earlier on Cranbourne Cup night, the heavily-backed Boom Down careered away with the $10,000 to-the-winner Ram’s Security Victoria Cup over 699m. Trained by Steve White at Buln Buln East, Boom Down relocated from NSW in late 2018 and was having just his fourth start in Victoria when sent out at $3.30 from box four in the Victoria Cup, with Hot Tip the $2.20 favourite. Boom Down took the lead mid-race and couldn’t have been more impressive as he romped to victory more than eight lengths ahead of Hot Tip in 41.34sec. The local hopes that could line up in the All Star Mile By Hayley Wildes The All Star Mile is the only horse race in Australia where the general public plays a role in choosing the final field of horses, and has a chance to win $250,000 along the way. The world’s richest 1600-metre race, boasting a $5 million prize pool, is in its first year and will be held at Flemington Racecourse on 16 March. There are three locally-trained horses to get behind. Main Stage, O’Tauto and Mr Money Bags are all trained locally at the Cranbourne Turf Club and are among the nominated horses. Main Stage, trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young at Cranbourne, is part-owned by AFL superstar Dustin Martin and currently sits 20th in voting with just over 1200 votes. O’Tauto is trained by Cranbourne-based trainer Greg Eurell, who has Olympic experience in equestrian, and currently sits 37th in voting with just over 500 votes. Perhaps the pick of the locals is Mr Money Bags. Trained by Cranbourne-local Robbie Griffiths, Mr Money Bags is has over 3700 votes to sit seventh. Swans fall short in thriller By Nick Creely It came right down to the wire, but Nathan Lambden's whirlwind knock late on day two just wasn't enough for Casey-South Melbourne to hold on to a draw against Geelong at Casey Fields in the Saturday/Sunday fixture. The Cats had control over large parts of the contest after being sent in to bat on day one, with wild weather preventing any play until 2.30pm. Left-armer James Maxwell (3/53) broke through in his first over, removing opener Nick Browne, but out strode Cats skipper Eamonn Vines, who was perhaps given a life early after Maxwell appeared to have trapped the star bat in front, but the umpire didn't agree. But the Cats made the most of their chances, to find some momentum and forge ahead. The visitors got to stumps 4/166 off 56 overs, with Vines looking a class above, racing out to 74, and eyeing a century on the next morning. Day two saw the Cats resume under grey skies, with skipper Vines picking up where he left off. Left armer James Maxwell picked up his third wicket early after very nearly picking up one the ball before, breaking through the gate of Josh McDonald for 12 to give the home side a strong start. While Vines made batting look easy on the other end as he continued to work the ball into gaps and put away the bad balls, Tim Ludeman copped a barrage of short balls early from Nathan Lambden, in an attempt to sway him into playing an expansive shot with two men out on the hook or pull, but quickly worked his way to 15. But a stunning two-over patch from Jackson Fry (2/43) - replacing Lambden - saw the Swans wrestle back the momentum. Fry hung one out wide to lure Ludeman into a false stroke, finding the edge to Dev Pollock behind the stumps in an excellent wicketmaiden to begin his day.

Handing the Swans a tricky 15-minute burst before lunch, The Cats very nearly had Ryan Quirk in the final over before the break, with the young opener giving a sharp chance to gully, but survived as the home side went in unscatched. But constant wickets dented their progress after lunch, with Wells falling for 30, and Quirk for a very well-made 38, and despite the majority of batsmen getting starts, the Swans were well on their way to a loss. The Narre Warren Tennis Club has two new resurfaced courts and is excited to welcome the community to its open day on Sunday 17 February to celebrate. The open day will be a celebration of the work done by many people in getting two of their 10 courts resurfaced, thanks to a grant from the City of Casey. With all welcome to attend the day, there will be a free BBQ, raffle and of course the opportunity to get involved on court and have a hit of tennis with courts available for social tennis and mini courts available for youngsters. tory seemed like an eternity away - put simply, as brave as Casey-South Melbourne have been for the majority of the season, it was a mountain too far to climb. But Nathan Lambden had other ideas - he didn't want to just allow his side to just give up the points without at least making the Cats work for them. In a stunning 94-run stand for the final wicket with Jackson Fry (a club record since moving to Casey), Lambden pumped out a breathtaking 69 (his first half-century at the level), sending 12 balls to the rope and another over the fence to get the Swans near enough to victory, or at the very least, a respectable draw. The Cats eventually broke through, snaring Lambden in the dying moments of the match to seal the win, but it was a fine 90 minutes of batting that turned heads. The fact that the Swans took until the very final over of the day, and could have nearly pulled off a remarkable victory is a testament to the 'never give up' attitude the club has deployed, but it'll go still go down as a potentially costly loss so close to finals. Now sitting in ninth spot after holding a spot in the eight for so much of the season, the Swans need to find their groove with two matches left of the home and away season.

As of right now, the club's two new hardcourt courts are suitable for junior tournaments, but their eight synthetic turf courts are not. "Our aim is to have enough courts so that we can run tournaments and give the kids in the South East a centre-point for tennis out here," Narre Warren Tennis Club president Neil Littlejohn said. "We want to try to bring something in for our community, not just our club." Having been at Sweeney Reserve for 15 years, the two resurfaced courts mark the first major works done to any of the courts and the club is thrilled to share the upgrade with the community. Finals race isn’t over yet By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes Both Kooweerup and Pakenham have been the benchmark first XI sides of the WGCA's top tier for years now. The Demons have emerged victorious over the Lions in each of the past two grand finals - including the famous low-scoring thriller of 2016/17. But it was the Lions who kick-started the newest chapter of the two clubs' famous rivalry with victory on home soil the year before in 2015/16. And Saturday delivered a very real reminder that the Lions are capable of a repeat performance in this finals series. The Demons entered Round 12 in a familiar position - atop the ladder - and would hardly be discouraged by their performance against the Lions. Champion sides, particularly of the calibre of Mark Cooper's group, don't let themselves rise and fall too much with the results of individual games. But by contrast, the Lions would have reason to be buoyed by their own performance. Lacking an out-and-out quick to spearhead the attack, Rob Elston's group relies on a real group effort with the ball in each game. From a disastrous 6/51, the Lions recovered on day one to reach 192. It was made even more impressive given the calibre of the Kooweerup attack. From part-way through the day until stumps the narrative changed drastically from the Lions looking down and out, to being up to their eyeballs in the fight. The first clash of the season between the two sides was washed out, so this was their first real litmus test since last year's grand final. On day two, Cooper and Chris O'Hara set the foundation of the Demons' chase with a 43-run stand. But, uncharacteristically, Kooweerup

An under-the-weather Cooper was dismissed for 11 by Dale Tormey - who bowled an impressive 25 overs, taking 1/46 as a first change bowler - and the wickets continued to fall at a steady rate thereafter. Ultimately, the visitors were dismissed for 161 in the 71st over with O'Hara top-scoring with 43. Chris Smith (3/20 from 10 overs), Tormey, Sean Gramc (2/31 from his nine), and Jason Williams (3/31 from his 15) each had a telling impact for the Lions. But a clash between another two potential finalists couldn't have been more contrasting, with Clyde (9/91) stumbling over the line against a slumping Cardinia (75). The Cougars resumed on day two at a night-
marish 4/27, staring down the barrel of an embarrassing result given the target they were set. But despite losing a series of wickets throughout a tense period on the second day - even sliding all the way to 8/38 - they found it within themselves to claw their way to a crucial win. Kane Avard scored what would surely be the best unbeaten 23 of his life so far - playing the anchor role and seeing off more than 75 deliveries - while Nick Sadler (21) and Liam Bennett (10) remained stoic at the death. Without them, the result would have been reversed. It's that simple. James Giertz (6/45) and Travis Wheller (2/24) were the shining lights with the ball for the Bulls, who nearly recorded an astonishing
win. Elsewhere, in another battle of the potential finalists, Tooradin (4/143) recorded a six-wicket win at home over Devon Meadows (138) off the back of an unbeaten captain's knock from Cal O'Hare (70), while in the battle to stave off relegation back to the District division, Merinda Park (3/239) took the upper hand courtesy of an impressive seven-wicket win against Upper Beaconsfield (8/238) and an unbeaten 111 to Daniel McCalman. In the District division, Cranbourne Meadows suffered its first defeat of the season, going down to Officer. The Bullants, in desperate need of a win to stay in the top four, produced their finest performance of the season to come away with a rousing win. After dismissing the Rebels for just 90 runs on day one, the Bullants began day two at 5/101, eventually posting a total of 180. Elsewhere, after restricting Clyde to 119 on day one, Cardinia entered day two at 6/65 with plenty on the line. Needing 55 runs to claim the win, the Bulls found it extremely tough going as Matthew Bayliss (3/33) claimed all of his wickets on day two. Sitting precariously at 9/102 - still 17 runs short of Clyde's total - Cardinia needed a hero and one man rose to the occasion. That man was Luke Turner. His composure and ability to steady the ship led the way, while Jack Glen (three not out) importantly stayed at the crease. Turner made a match-winning knock of 37 runs to guide Cardinia to a total of 129 in 41 overs and the win. In other matches, Tooradin (219) was unable to defend its total on day two against an Emerald (5/223) team desperate for points to keep their finals hopes alive, and rain halted any chance Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll had of taking the win over Carlisle Park.

It didn't take Berwick long to rattle through Mordialloc on day two of their DDCA Turf 1 clash at Arch Brown Reserve in wintry conditions, but it may very well be the firestarter that the Bears needed. Crucially, the Bears all but sealed their spot in the four on Saturday, and effectively ended the season of the Bloodhounds and their chances of defending their premiership crown. The Bloodhounds resumed at 5/104, and in a healthy position to chase down the Bears' 155 for victory and to draw level with the home side on points. With opener Brendan Morris set on 60, the Bloodhounds entered the day full of confidence. But that was quickly extinguished, with Brendan Rose (2/26) breaking through immediately, forcing the edge of Morris into the safe hands of keeper Nathan Pilon before he could even add to his overnight score, a game changing moment from a man signed to deliver these kinds of moments. Rose's stunning start continued, with Liam Bence falling on the very next ball, also to the sure hands of Pilon behind the stumps. After the former Casey-South Melbourne star did the early damage, it was then Matt Chasemore (4/17) that delivered, with the skipper picking up the last three wickets cheaply to end the Bloodhounds on just 109, adding a mere five runs for the loss of five wickets in little over half an hour of play resuming to seal the win. The loss leaves the Bloodhounds with a lot of work to do and some results go their way,

The great Steve Spoljaric, meanwhile, delivered yet another match winning performance with the bat, amassing 89 in Springvale South's
win against St Mary's. On a special day for the club, celebrating its 50 years as a cricket club, the Bloods surged to the top of the Turf 1 ladder, with plenty of past players and supporters settling in for an entertaining day watching them bat. Set a challenging 236 for victory, the Bloods got off to a fine start with openers Nathan King (60) and Michael Vandort (18) putting on 61 for the first wicket, but Spoljaric was the key, helping his side recover somewhat from 3/112 to chase the runs four wickets down. King in particular continued his electric form, sending another 11 balls to the fence, backing up his unbeaten century from the week prior to rattle past 500 runs for the season. But it was Spoljaric who once again shone, sending eight balls to the boundary and three sailing over the rope during his brilliant knock, while Jack Sketcher also provided valuable support with an unbeaten 40 to work his way into some handy form leading into finals. Spoljaric's reign of dominance over the association just continues to grow, with the 41-year-old now almost crossing 6000 runs in the DDCA, and a remarkable sixth Wookey Medal in well within reach. Hallam Kalora Park's hopes of taking out the minor premiership are well and truly alive after a stunning win over Buckley Ridges at Park Oval. The Hawks are just one point from second and six points from the top after holding their nerve to chase down the Bucks' target. And they are certainly a side to keep an eye on, and
crucially, seem to be peaking at just the right time of the season. Resuming at 1/79, still needing 103 runs for victory against the home side, Ben Hillard (67 off 217 balls) and Jagveer Hayer (40 off 111) kept their composure, nudging the Hawks to 148 before Hayer's dismissal. Hillard's grit and determination to not just give up his wicket was evident, chewing up almost five hours of batting to grind the Bucks into the ground without one of its premier quicks, Daniel Watson. Despite losing a couple more wickets in quick succession, the Hawks scrapped over the line with six wickets to spare in a crucial win for the club. With seamer Jurgen Andersen finally making his return from a nasty injury picked up just before Christmas, the Bucks kept things tidy, but just couldn't find the breakthrough when needed, with medium pace Susa Pradeep (2/42) the only to take multiple wickets. In the final game of the round, Heinz Southern Districts drew with North Dandenong at Reedy Reserve. Needing 213 for victory after a sparkling day one century to Cobras champion Michael Davies, the Maroons were in a spot of bother early, falling to 4/44 after Suraj Randiv (5/62) injected his class onto the contest. Skipper Asfan Thajudeen (47) and Syed Mehmood (40) fought extremely hard to wrestle back the momentum, and their patience and grit paid dividends, with weather intervening with the home side needing just a further two wickets to win.

Goliath turns the tables CRANBOURNE BOWLS In Division 2 it was a case of David versus Goliath with Cranbourne playing away against ladder leaders Keysborough and with Cranbourne hitting the lead with two ends to play it was an opportunity to pull off the upset of the year. Unfortunately, Cranbourne had to suffer a long trip home losing by just 2 shots in the end and another opportunity lost. Good news for team 3 was skip Sofio Raiti pulling off another huge win this time by 24 shots which will please his many fans who have been watching him with great interest during the year. Sofio is becoming more like a bowls pop star these days. Side 1 Division 2 Despite the wet and windy conditions the Cranbourne team was in great spirit going into this match. Sure they were up against ladder leaders Keysborough but the team had nothing to lose and all four rinks played some great bowls and were unlucky to lose. Cranbourne hit the lead with two ends to go and were well placed with bowls in the head leaving the opposition skip the only option but to play a Hail Mary shot, picking up the kitty into the ditch and winning the match. Skip Frank Byrne continued his great form with excellent support from his team mates, John McKenna and Shane Morrison who put in some great bowls all day and won by 6 shots. Cranbourne 69 (4 points) lost to Keysborough 71. Side 2 Division 3 Last week it was a win by 12 shots but this week it was a win by 18 shots and Skip Steve Hickson and his crew of Bill Bradbury, Brian Biasci and Stan Myers were all smiles after the game. That win was enough to give the side victory by just 3 shots thanks to the relief of the other rinks in the team. Cranbourne 85 (14 points) defeated Chelsea 82. Side 3 Division 5 Bowls pop star sensation, Skip Sofio Raiti has done it again winning by a massive 24 shots which will no doubt please his many fans. How does he do it? Nobody knows, but the club selectors just hope he continues to do it. What a season Sofio has had. Also an honourable mention to his crew of Gerry Dudink, Bob Scott and Joy McLisky who all gave Sofio great support and all shared in the enjoyment of the win. Cranbourne 95 (16 points) defeated Churchill Waverley 58. The team was happy that they all played at their best. Cranbourne 68 (9 points) tied with Keysborough 68. Side 5 Six a side Skip Mick Feeley and his rink of Brian Hall and Stan Williams were in great form winning by 14 shots but that was not enough to bridge the gap going down by 5 shots in another close game. Cranbourne 36 (2 points) lost to Chelsea 41. Ladies Division 1 Despite the scores being level at the lunch break Cranbourne has suffered another loss this time to Montmorency by 22 shots. The form lapse has been very disappointing plunging the side from top of the ladder a few weeks ago to fourth. This week they play Clayton at home and they will need to improve if they have aspirations of playing in finals with only 3 matches remaining. Cranbourne Ladies 43 (0 points) lost to Montmorency 65. Saturday's Division 3 home finals hopes are back on track after a solid 37 shot win over Noble Park at Fountain Gate. Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Rod Lane and Cam Lee led the way with a 34-10 win, supported by John Wright, Tracey Storm, Percy Herath and Zak Storm (31-11), and Erik Luyters, Colin Groom, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar (25-23). The only downside was a 20-29 los by Eric Sydenham, Zade Bulmer, Iain Stevenson and Wilma Stevenson. Narre Warren (1) 16-110 defeated Noble Park (1) 2-73. Division 4 was also at Fountain Gate and had a 21 shot win over Berwick. Keith Mark, Alan Mark, Jim Kempf and Norm Hosmer was the strongest winneer (27-13), while Wally Finlayson, David Wilkinson, Geoff Miller and Ralph Devonshire (20-15), Peter Groom, Graham Dodd, Stan Robinson and Carl Lapham (17-16) and Wilma Haringsma, Mark Groom, Philip Howard and Peter Lister (18-17) all won. Plug in and drive away By Ewan Kennedy Hyundai Ioniq is the South Korean marque’s indication of the immediate future in clean running cars. It comes in three stages of technology: The 2019 Ioniq Hybrid is powered primarily by a petrol engine, with a battery-powered electric motor providing assistance as required. Regenerative braking allows the hybrid system to recover much of the kinetic energy that is lost in conventional vehicles, using it to charge the high-voltage battery. In this mechanical layout the Hyundai is similar to the Toyota Prius models we have seen in Australia for many years now. Next up the rung is the Ioniq Plug-in. Again it combines a petrol engine with an electric motor. It can make electric-only trips of up to 63 kilometres. It can be plugged in to charge the high-voltage battery. At the top of the technology tree is the flagship Ioniq Electric, it's a pure electric car with a real-world range of about 230 km and the capability for charging its high-voltage lithiumion polymer battery to 80 percent capacity in approximately 23 minutes. Every 2019 Hyundai Ioniq is available in Elite and Premium trim levels, and each boasts safety, convenience and driver appeal familiar from Hyundai’s conventional-engine line-up. We have previously tested the hybrid model, this week’s test was in the Ioniq Plug-in in Premium trim. Lines of the Hyundai Ioniq are sleek and clean and don't make the mistake crying out, “I am different” as do the Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf for example. Digital instrumentation can be customised to the driver’s desires. The infotainment screen is an 8.0-inch unit and is clear and easy to read and use. Satellite navigation, Apple Car Play and Android Auto are standard. An Infinity premium audio system with eight speakers and external amplifier offers good quality sound. Hyundai Ioniq hybrid has a 1.6-litre petrol engine, a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and 1.56 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. The powerplant is mated with a six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. In a high-tech car like the Hyundai Ioniq it's
no surprise the latest in active safety features are standard. These include electronic stability control, ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution; autonomous emergency braking; adaptive cruise control; lane keep assist; blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. A reversing camera with dynamic guidelines is complemented by front and rear parking sensors. On the passive safety front are airbags for the driver and front passenger, a knee airbag for the driver, side airbags for driver and front passenger and side curtain units front and back. tle. Even when the petrol engine joins the action the noise level is only a little higher. We only had one occasion to charge the Ioniq Plug-in. That was at the Pacific Fair shopping centre close to home. We spent less than an hour there to do some grocery shopping and enjoy a cup of coffee and during that time we gained a further 15 kilometres of driving range. (Hint: a further benefit of the PacFair charging spot is that it's only a few metres away from the entrance to the shops.) Starting with a full petrol tank and drive battery our test Ioniq averaged just 3.2 litres per hundred kilometres during the 325 kilometres of our test. Much of that was on the motorway, where a hybrid is not at its best, which makes it even more impressive. The ride/handling equation leans towards the comfort side, which makes sense in a family hatchback. Steering has less feel than we like, other than that the Ioniq is a most pleasant drive.
