"Some people want not many donor siblings and choose a donor with less and some like the idea of using a proven donor where they know the donor won't come after them, or they like the idea of international siblings for their children to meet once they're older." Mr Hooper hasn't personally met Joe; however the two have spoken over Skype. "I think it's very much the case of what you see is what you get, he is a man that is straight forward, honest and says what he believes in," he said. "Whether or not other people don't share his opinion, he doesn't sugar-coat anything and that's why some controversy might come to light because of that brutal honesty. He wants to keep donating until the day he dies."

"The aim of the 60 Minutes story was to highlight the culture differences between Australian donors and American donors," Mr Hooper said. "In Australia, men don't generally donate prolifically; the American culture is that everyone loves a winner." When Joe posted in the Facebook group, announcing his Australian 'sperm tour', he received mixed responses. "Everyone has different ideas in their head of what their ideal donor is, I think that is the freedom of choice people make as adults," Mr Hooper added.

"Bella screamed and said 'We're having a baby' like five times but I didn't believe her until I saw the test as we have experienced miscarriages previously and many failed attempts," Tracey said. "We are both over the moon. We are a blended family, five of our seven children are from previous relationships, two are since we have been a couple and we are hoping to have a few more as a couple." An American sperm donor, believed to have fathered more than 100 children around the world has successfully impregnated a couple from the Casey region. The 47-year-old known as 'Joe Donor' runs his business through social media. Tracey and Bella found out they are seven weeks pregnant after requesting a vial of Joe's sperm. "The number of children he has doesn't concern us due to them all being overseas," Tracey said. "He has a tight relationship with most of his donor-conceived children and recipients which prevents speculation going around that these children will form a relationship. Tracey and Bella have invited other recipients to contact them, get to know them and their donor-conceived children. Channel 9 TV show '60 Minutes' interviewed Joe and the Casey couple on Sunday night. The couple met Joe on January 8, at Westside Hotel in Laverton to receive their donation. "The initial meeting with Joe would have been more comfortable without the 60 Minutes camera crew around but we ended up having a chat later on with him and got to know him a bit better," Tracey said. "The conversation just flowed and it was natural. We thought he was genuine and it felt like we'd known him for years." The couple posted in the Sperm Donation Australia Facebook page before Joe privately messaged them and told them he was coming to Australia and was willing to help. "We chose Joe because he seemed genuine, his intentions were good and he didn't come across as a sleaze," she said. "We looked for a donor who is upfront, has a great personality, is 100 percent honest and has clean STI checks." Before receiving Joe's sperm donation, Tracey said there were recent STI checks posted to his Facebook page from September 2018. "The checks posted online got removed because he was under contract with 60 Minutes," Tracey claimed. "We plan on using Joe again for another baby as we have a close contact with him and we are happy for him to meet the donor child

IN BRIEF Woman struck by train
Charity stopped cold on the street
A woman was fatally struck by a train in Berwick at a crossing on Clyde Road on 12 February. It's understood the woman was hit at 5.15pm. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and police will prepare a report for the coroner. Buses replaced trains between Dandenong and Pakenham until trains resumed at about 8pm.
By Jessica Anstice Two women have been captured on security footage taking advantage of Narre Warren charity Bk 2 Basics Melbourne. Founder of the family-run, non-profit charity Kelly Warren was left disappointed when she noticed the ladies had taken three boxes of bottled water and half a box of Fanta. The charity took to Facebook to share the video footage of the women rummaging through boxes of donations. Bk 2 Basics Melbourne offers food every day to people that need it. People can freely take what they need, not what they want. "We do monitor what people take, but we don't ask many people to put back because they have taken too much. 95 percent of people respect our very simple rules," Ms Warren said. "We do not tolerate greed. Because we are open seven days a week, there is no need to be greedy. "You will find the greedy ones are the people that don't need it. A prime example is the ladies in the video." Ms Warren said those in need tend to ignore all the soft drinks, sweets etc and go straight for the fruit and vegies. The Facebook video attracted just under 900 comments and 59,000 views. In the comment section, the majority agreed that it was 'greedy' and 'disgusting to see'. "It is a family-based charity and the impact of greed is just disappointing, we feel sick when the trust is broken," she said. "BK 2 Basics Melbourne wants to bring communities together. It also wants to bring back the trust in communities." "No personal details are needed, no healthcare card is needed. We say bring a smile and a bag." Together with food rescue services and businesses around Melbourne, Bk 2 Basics

Casey Crime Investigation Unit are investigating a theft that occurred at a retail store in Narre Warren South on 31 January. Police allege that at about 11:20am two men and a woman entered the Centre Road store, picked up a bonsai plant valued at $450 and left without making an attempt to pay. Police have released CCTV still images of a man and woman who they believe can assist with their investigation. If you recognise the people in the images or have any information please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or http://www. crimestoppersvic.com.au and quote incident number 190046353.

Narre teen killed in three-car collision By Jessica Anstice A Narre Warren teenage girl was killed in the three car collision in Rowville on Sunday at about 12pm. Investigators believe the three vehicles were travelling north-bound on Stud Road before crashing near Kelletts Road. The 17-year-old backseat passenger of a white Holden Calais sedan died at the scene and six people were hospitalised with minor injuries. The Calais came to rest against a power pole near the intersection of Lakeside Boulevard. The driver of the vehicle, a 28-year-old Clyde North man along with his 27-year-old
female passenger and four-year-old boy were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The sole occupant of the white Holden Commodore wagon, a 27-year-old Pakenham man was arrested at the scene. Both drivers have been interviewed by police and released pending further enquiries. A 20-year-old Narre Warren woman driving one of the vehicles with a male passenger was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She was interviewed on Monday and released pending further enquiries. Witnesses have reported that at least two of
the vehicles were drag racing. The exact cause of the collision is yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing. Investigators are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed two of the vehicles, the white Holden Commodore wagon and the silver Holden Commodore sedan travelling on the Monash Freeway (inbound) before exiting at Stud Road prior to the collision. The exact cause of the collision is yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with dash-cam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Decade of the Dees Please don’t forget your feline friends this summer
The City of Casey and Melbourne Football Club (MFC) marked the 10th anniversary of their partnership with a celebration at Bunjil Place on Wednesday 13 February. Council and MFC proudly embarked on a 30-year partnership in 2009 and since then have been working together to promote and engage the community in sport, create talent pathways and provide unique opportunities for residents. A special anniversary celebration was held at Bunjil Place on Wednesday, before the free Family Fun Night with the Melbourne Football Club took over the plaza. The whole playing list was in attendance, meeting local families, running football activities and challenging those that were up for it in games, including Mario Kart on the big screen, table tennis and basketball. There was free ice cream, face painting, music and a screening of Jumanji 2 on the big screen after the event, making for a great evening out. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said council was proud of the many positive outcomes the partnership has created in its first 10 years. "For the past 10 years, this partnership has been pivotal in engaging our diverse and rapidly growing community in sport and physical activity, either as spectators or participants, from Casey Fields to the MCG," she said. "We have a fantastic venue in Casey Fields, enhanced in no small measure by Melbourne having such a strong presence there, bringing elite football to Casey and providing great opportunities for our community. "I trust that the partnership will continue to grow, making Casey a vibrant place to call home and continuing to bring elite sport, talent pathways and fun events and opportunities to our community." One of the major milestones for the partnership was the significant redevelopment of

The family-favourite movie Beauty and the Beast was screened at Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick on Saturday night. The event had an awesome turn out of around 1300 people. "Overall the event was a lot of fun! We were supported by an amazing group of volunteers and the staff at Wilson Botanic that made the event possible," event organiser Josh Carell said. "The pre-entertainment is always such a highlight for us. To see the children engage with the magician and the massive group of children wanting to get in a photo with 'Belle'. "The applause at the end of the movie was such a wonderful way to end the event." Entertainment before the movie included Mr Marvel's Magic and Circus Show, a meet and greet with 'Belle', harp performance by Harpbeat and a special Beauty and the Beast performance by Windmill Theatre Company. Six delicious plant-based food vendors helped feed the crowd. Donations were also collected throughout the night and raised a total of $500 which will be donated to one very deserving person in the community, someone that was nominated prior to the event. Littlefoot and Company will be surprising them in a few days. "For us these cinema nights are a small part of what we do here at Littlefoot and Company but a big part of what allows us to do our other work," Mr Carell said. "Everyone that purchases a ticket to our cinema nights is ultimately giving us a donation which gives us the ability to run our other free events and spaces. "We love getting the community together and we are grateful to everyone that attends these events."

On 19 February, a story was shared on the Berwick Star News Facebook page about a derelict Hampton Park Food Market labelled an "eyesore" and "Melbourne worst" that will be bulldozed after Casey council approved a demolition application on Tuesday 11 February. Here is how some readers reacted online: Greg Eboy: Really? Apartments? Grew up and spent most of my life in Hampton Park. Never thought I'd see apartments there. Maz Drinkwater: It looked terrible. Melissa Johnson: It used to be a thriving little centre, I shopped there many times. Such a shame the way it is now... Kylie Davis: Yeah I don't think apartments are the right way to go! A plaza or something similar would serve its purpose better. We don't need more rough heads hanging around. Karen Peel: What a waste and now they are going to over stock it with people. 117 apartments is way too many cramped in - going in / out of there traffic wise etc. Lisa Sturzaker: What about the old dodgy shops near Woolies? Knock that down too. And while they are at it, fix the car park. It's dirty and I stopped going there a long time ago because of it. Jo Nash: Well I guess those squatters will need to find a new home. Catherine Anning: I have worked in the vicinity for nine years and seen it go from a thriving centre to a run-down old western movie ghost town. Tina Dodd: It's about time. But if they put 117 apartments I'm moving.

Market wins hearts NARRE WARREN
By Jessica Anstice After the extremely high numbers for the inaugural Berwick Night Market in January, last Friday saw great numbers without the long food queues. Stallholders and vendors enjoyed the opportunity to chat with the patrons and the music topped off the relaxed atmosphere. "These Friday night markets are certainly resonating with the community and why wouldn't they?" Berwick Night Market event organiser Julie Benson said. "It's wonderful to see the locals strolling with the pram, hand in hand with the children as they come on down for a few hours at the end of the working week." The March night market takes place on 15 March where the City Of Casey will be having a caravan for residents of the biggest growth corridor in Melbourne to see what plans are afoot for their neighbourhood. "We can't thank the community enough for embracing us," Ms Benson said. "We hope everyone comes on down to the last night market before we take a hiatus over Winter when we will be presenting the indoor component and two to three takeaway food options from the boardwalk. Back to full swing in September!"

People could ask CCL staff for help by embracing a book 'matchmaking' service, asking for recommendations for books that other readers have fallen in love with and taking up the offer of a 'blind date' with a book. Casey Cardinia Libraries joined libraries all over Victoria in celebrating Library Lovers Day as part of the Public Libraries Victoria's (PLV) Libraries Change Lives initiative. New data released by PLV shows the state's love affair with libraries continued to grow in the past year, with: The number of library visits hitting an alltime record of 30,5 million in 2017/18 Attendances at library events and programs jumping to two million per annum More than five million free Wi-Fi sessions accessed (up eight percent) More than 42 million items borrowed from the physical collections, and A 22 percent increase in loans of eBooks Speaking on behalf of the sector, PLV president Chris Buckingham said more people than ever before were relying on public libraries for everything from social engagement to reliable internet access. "Libraries promote literacy, provide free access to information, encourage lifelong learning and contribute to healthy and resilient communities," he said. "We reduce isolation simply by providing a safe and welcoming space for everyone - including the most vulnerable in our community.

Mr Buckingham said Library Lovers Day is a chance to reflect on the amazing free services available to everyone in our community, and a reminder that libraries need funding support to sustain services as our population grows and changes. Libraries Change Lives was developed to highlight the economic and social benefits of public libraries and raise awareness of the essential role of libraries in creating literate, productive and engaged communities. Demon delight for pupils By Jessica Anstice Four players from Melbourne Football Club (MFC) inspired students at Narre Warren North Primary School on Wednesday 13 February. As part of the clubs Community Camps
Program the school was lucky enough to have a visit from MFC players Oscar McDonald, James Harmes, Guy Walker and Joel Smith. Students from year's four to six were invited to be a part of the session, which demonstrated MFC's ongoing commitment to support grassroots players and connect with local schools.
"The students loved the session, were totally engaged and learnt so much from interacting with the players," Narre Warren North Primary School physical education teacher Vanessa Wilson said. The session started with a group warm-up, but unfortunately, due to heavy rain the pro-
gram was moved inside. "It did not impact the effectiveness of the program as the players delivered a question and answer session which inspired, challenged and excited our students," Ms Wilson said. "It was a fabulous session and we hope to see the playing group again real soon."

"A special thank you to principal of Beaconsfield Primary School principal Gary Methven who joined Berwick College principal Kerri Bolch to celebrate the learning journey, primary to the completion of secondary schooling, of our alumni," Berwick College executive assistant principal Zonya Mackinlay said. "It is the caring community partnerships and positive connections with home, school teachers past and present, which support our young people to success. "All the students were wished the very best for the next stage in their lives at the ceremony." Around 30 past-students were acknowledged for study scores above 40 including one perfect study score of 50 for English. Brigade marks 75 years By Jessica Anstice This year is the 75th anniversary of the formation of Narre Warren North Fire Brigade. There have been a lot of changes in the brigade since opening in 1944 as the Narre Warren Bush Fire Brigade. "We were a farming community 75 years ago," Narre Warren North Fire Brigade secretary and volunteer fire-fighter Michael Presta said. "We are now doing 300 calls a year, supporting the local community and across the state and broader Australian community." The brigade now has about 50 members, including operation and non-operational members. Non-operational members assist with fundraising, social events and the junior members aged between 11 and 16 years old. The junior members train on the appliances under the supervision of a senior member. Unfortunately, there are no original Narre Warren North Fire Brigade members; however the two longest members John Sonogan and Kevin Ridd have 90 years of service between them. Past and present members will celebrate with an afternoon tea on 6 April at the station. For more information contact Mr Presta on michael.presta@members.cfa.vic.gov.au Narre Warren North Fire Brigade are celebrating 75 years of service to the community on April 6.

FOCUS ON ... PROPERTY MANAGEMENT
TRUST YOUR PROPERTY TO AN EXPERT LEAH CALNAN, REIV SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT. IN an age when we are increasingly outsourcing household jobs and chores, it makes sense to let a Property Manager take the hassle out of renting or leasing your property. Property Managers are the conduit between property owners and the people who lease or rent their house, apartment, office or factory to live in or do business. Property managers maximise their clients’ return on their investment and ensure that tenants are happy. Most Property Managers, especially those who are members of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, are well educated, trained and resourced, know their local area and are connected to their peers in the real estate industry. We strive to get the best results for our clients and do the things they don’t have time to. We are responsible for conducting open for inspections, marketing the property, screening tenants, ensuring the property is well maintained and collecting rent. Resolving complaints make up a major component of a Property Manager's work - leaking roofs, broken windows and faulty heating and cooling systems are a daily reality - so negotiation and organisational skills are imperative. To make an informed decision on who you trust to manage to your property, I suggest asking the following questions of all agencies you are considering:
Property management expert Leah Calnan
PROPERTY LEASING î ˛ On average, how many properties does the agency lease each month? î ˛ What steps do they take to minimize your vacancy period?
î ˛ Does the agency team member personally show prospective tenants through properties or do they hand out keys? î ˛ How does the agency market available properties for lease? î ˛ How much information is obtained from applicants applying for properties and what information is verified? PROPERTY MANAGEMENT î ˛ What documented systems are in place for property management? î ˛ What is your process for dealing with rent arrears? î ˛ What is your process for dealing with repairs, maintenance and after hours matters? î ˛ What steps do you take to ensure that all maintenance work on my property is competitively priced? î ˛ How frequently will you inspect my property?
î ˛ What is the experience level of the team members who will be leasing and managing my property? î ˛ How much training do they have? î ˛ What ongoing training is there in place? î ˛ Can you send my rent statements by email and deposit my money in my bank account electronically? How often will I be paid? î ˛ What involvement does the director have? î ˛ What is their experience in Property Management? CUSTOMER SERVICE î ˛ What back up staff are there when my property manager is sick or on holidays? î ˛ How frequently will you communicate with me and what form will it take? î ˛ What is the agencey's point of difference?

HENLEY Properties and Brown Property Group, along with hundreds of local trades and suppliers, have come together to build and auction a brand new family home with proceeds of the no-reserve auction to be donated to the FightMND cause (Motor Neurone Disease). The charity home was launched to the public by AFL great and FightMND cofounder Neale Daniher with huge crowds attending to take the opportunity to get the first glimpses inside. Over the last few weeks, steady streams of visitors have continued to tour the stunning new home located in the master-planned community of Meridian in Clyde North - which comes fully furnished and also includes a brand new Toyota Corolla parked in the driveway. Founded in 2014, FightMND was established with the purpose of finding effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Motor Neurone Disease. “The entire team at FightMND is continually humbled by the overwhelming support and generosity of organisations such as Henley Properties and Brown Property Group,” Neale Daniher said. MND is a rare neurological condition that progressively damages the motor neurones or ‘nerves’ in the brain and spinal cord causing the associated muscles to waste away. The symptoms vary from person to person and heartbreakingly, there is no treatment or known cure. Henley has a 28-year background of supporting philanthropic ventures and has donated 68 charity homes and over $26 million. Similarly, Brown Property Group is committed to supporting the community, with a strong focus on local Victorian charities. Past initiatives have supported the new St. John of God Hospital in

Show you care – be aware Narre Warren North's Toni Arfaras is urging fellow residents to be stroke aware this year by organising or attending a potentially lifesaving StrokeSafe talk. Ms Arfaras is committed to spreading the word about preventing this potentially deadly disease along with knowing the steps to take in a stroke emergency. Ms Arfaras, a stroke survivor herself, started volunteering as an ambassador with the Stroke Foundation to raise awareness about stroke, the risk factors and symptoms. She is concerned a combined total of more than 580 strokes are expected in her electorates of Holt and La Trobe this year alone.
Across Australia there will be one stroke every nine minutes. "Stroke can have a devastating impact on individuals and families, and it can happen to anyone at any age," Ms Arfaras said. "The outlook does not need to be this grim. Eighty percent of strokes are preventable and with the right treatment at the right time many people are able to make a full recovery. "Stroke is always a time-critical medical emergency. Through the StrokeSafe sessions I encourage locals to learn the signs of stroke and understand how important it is to get to hospital quickly." Ms Arfaras said the simple way to recognise the signs of stroke was by remembering the word FAST. Using the F.A.S.T test involves

If you see any of these signs, call 000 straight away Stroke Foundation CEO Sharon McGowan said Ms Arfaras and fellow StrokeSafe Ambassadors played an important role in raising stroke awareness. "Ambassadors provide first-hand accounts of their experience of stroke and insight into how a stroke can impact lives and families. These talks can be really powerful,'' Ms McGowan said.
"Stroke can be prevented, it can be treated and it can be beaten, however not enough of us know what to do in a stroke emergency. Orthopaedic care has expanded in Berwick with St John of God Berwick Hospital opening a brand new surgical unit specialising in treating injuries and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system, including the spine. The hospital has undertaken orthopaedic and spinal surgery for several years; however, significant growth in this speciality has required the establishment of a dedicated unit. The new orthopaedic unit opened on Monday 4 February 2019. The fourth-floor unit has been left empty since the opening of the new hospital in January 2018 to accommodate future growth. It was not anticipated to be needed for the first few years of operation. However, local demand has seen it necessary to offer further orthopaedic services to the residents of Melbourne’s South East. The unit has the capacity for 32 beds and will primarily focus on orthopaedic and neurosurgical patients. The new unit sees the beginning of an emphasis on orthopaedic services. The hospital’s MAKO robot, currently used for partial knee replacements, will be utilized for full knee replacements commencing in February. “It is reassuring for local patients to know that they have access to this very targeted nursing care and technology so close to home, allowing patients to have surgery and rehabili-

This treatment is suitable for all skin types and is designed to support skin regeneration to help conditions including acne scars, surgical scars/scarring, stretch marks, fine lines, pigmentation, enlarged pores, blackheads and mild textural irregularities and is suitable for treatment during the summer months. Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light: Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light is used to treat conditions related to skin damage and premature aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, redness, acne scars, broken capillaries, pigmentation, melasma, age spots and general photo rejuvenation. World superbike’s triple-treat launches at Phillip Island Strap in for a wild ride as Phillip Island kicks off the 2019 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship. From 22 to 24 February the island is set to launch the new three-race world supers format at the Yamaha Finance round. Just to spice up the life of the WorldSBK boys, organisers have added a 10-lap Sunday midday sprint, adding to the traditional 2x22 lap races on Saturday and Sunday at 3pm. The three battles will be a highlight of the 13-strong production race agenda on the 4.445km island circuit. World superbikes will be backed by world supersport and the launch of the 2019 national championships for Australian superbike, supersport and supersport 300. The world superbike sprint will deliver an exciting new frontier for teams, racers and spectators. Riders will go flat out from start to finish, guaranteeing bar-banging action of the highest order. Reigning world champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki) isn’t afraid of the argy-bargy and he’ll be one of the riders pushing hard at the front. Alongside him will be riders such as 30 STAR NEWS
|
WorldSBK rookie Alvaro Bautista (Ducati), Chaz Davies (Ducati), Tom Sykes (BMW), Leon Haslam (Kawasaki), Marco Melandri (Yamaha), Michael van der Mark (Yamaha), Alex Lowes (Yamaha and Leon Camier (Honda). Aussie superbike champion Troy Herfoss (Honda) will also be competing as a wildcard and is eyeing off some big international scalps. The 22-lap races will also be intriguing as tyre conservation and tactics come into the mix. Long or short, the WorldSBK races will be sensational, with Ducati and BMW also debuting new high-revving four-cylinder machines to add even more intrigue. Honda has also re-committed to WorldSBK with a factory-backed team. It all adds up to a crackerjack weekend - and season - of WorldSBK racing! Meanwhile, the 18-lap world supersport race will be held at 1:15pm on Sunday with local Goulburn rider Tom Toparis representing the Aussies as a wildcard entry on his Yamaha. For more information, schedule and tickets, head to www.worldsbk.com.au or visit Ticketek.

Valley rallies around her By Nick Creely Get Vicious, or die trying. That is the motto of Friday 1 March's special event at the Don Road Sporting Complex in Healesville - the Rett Syndrome Awareness Cup. In a night where some of the great football characters of the Yarra Valley will come together for a charity match, with the purpose of fighting the devastating disease that is Rett syndrome, Lee Lawrence hopes crowds will come out in their droves to show their support. "It's going to very big, we're certainly excited about it - last year, we (Lee and Tahli) raised over $14,000 for Rett, but this year we want to smash it, and do a lot more through this game," he said. "We've been working really hard on it, and hopefully on the night the weather's fantastic, we get a good crowd in and raise some decent money." Lawrence - who runs the popular Facebook page 'Valley Vicious footy banter', knows all too well the horror of Rett, and along with his partner Tahli, have worked tirelessly to raise awareness, after their daughter Gypsy was diagnosed with the disease at an early age. Rett syndrome - which is a genetic brain disorder found almost exclusively in females - has a rare prevalence of one in about 15,000 females, and young girls with the disease are unable to acquire new skills and gradually or suddenly lose previously acquired abilities, such as control of hands, and the ability to talk and walk. "It was something that shocked us at first Gypsy was fine up to a year old, and then we noticed things weren't right," he said. "There were treatments, and tests, and it went on for ages, and we got the wrong diagnosis, it was a real battle for a while. "We finally worked out it was Rett - as heartbreaking as it was at the time, it was a relief to realise what we're working with, and fight it, or try to. "(So) instead of a little girl growing up normally, the brain just doesn't develop - in Gypsy's case, she'll never speak, is losing the ability to use her hands, and eventually won't walk. That will happen, but the timeframe we don't know. "The life expectancy is very short, the average is around 30, but most don't make that mostly because of accidents that can happen. They just don't have the awareness at all." With the diagnosis of Rett in Gypsy chang-
The Rett Syndrome Awareness Cup is aimed at raising funds for a cure for girls like Gypsy. ing their lives immediately, Lee knew that they had to do something to help find a cure. That's when he started up his now famous page on Facebook, which has attracted a cult following in the Valley. "I coached at Yarra Glen at reserve level for four or five years, and with Gypsy, it was really hard work. It was too hard family wise, so I gave up the coaching gig, and Valley Vicious has really been my footy release," he said. "It started out small, and then it grew some legs, with some pictures going viral, and it got some support behind it - I then thought, 'how can I get Rett involved in this?', and 'what can
I do?', and that's where we came up with the stubby holders and stuff like that, and that's how we made the money last year. "That got it rolling, and it's taken on from that. It's been fantastic." Next Friday's Rett Syndrome Awareness Cup is set to be a cracker, with gates opening at 5.30pm. The first match of the night will kick off at 6.30pm, with a netball game made of the best AFL Outer East Division 1 and 2 netballers. There will be also plenty of activities to entertain families, with face painting, comedians, a band, DJ and a Superboot competition.
Food will also be available, as well as a raffle and jumper action, all aimed to boost funds raised to find a cure. And at 8pm, the Rett Syndrome Awareness Cup will be played, with the Valley Vicious All Stars - a side made up of a bunch of characters around the Valley - taking on the Croydon North-MLOCC Football Club, with former AFL stars Lindsay Gilbee (who played junior football with Lee) and Shaun Smith all locked in to play. Lawrence encouraged all the new sides coming into the AFL Outer East competition to get behind the cause, with Officer's Chris Power locked in for the All Stars. "Officer have been fantastic, we've chatted with their president quite a lot, and they've got one player playing which is great," he said. "That's what we're about; we want all these new teams to get around it. We've been trying as much as we can with these new teams, but no footy's been played so it's been a bit hard, but we're keen to get around them too." Officer president Nick McLennan said that the club is looking forward to getting behind the event. "This is a fantastic initiative, and we as a club are very happy to get behind Lee and the crew to bring much needed awareness for Rett syndrome," he said. "I know Lee and the crew have done a lot of work with the existing clubs in the AFL Yarra Ranges competition, but I strongly encourage the clubs joining this league to get behind this fantastic cause. "I look forward to attending the game on Friday 1 March." With all money raised going into research into the disease, Lee said they're not far away from making some significant progress, but acknowledges that there is still plenty of work left to do. "We had Bill from Rett Australia pop in on Saturday, and he came out to thank us and drop off some banners and stuff - everything we get, we give to them for research, they're actually not that far off from finding a cure," he said. "They've found it in mice, but that's a big step up to a human, but they're plugging away at it - at the end of the day, it might not help Gypsy, but it might help another little girl down the track." Entry on the night is $5, with anyone under the age of 16 granted free entry. For more info, search @valleyvicious on Facebook.
Thunder get off to a rocky start in the NPL opener By Nick Creely Despite the excitement and anticipation of the start of the season, Dandenong Thunder were handed a stern lesson in the opening round of the NPL on Saturday night. In the eventual 0-4 loss at George Andrews, Hume City played with too much intensity for the home side to deal with. It took a rapid start by City to set the tone for the match, with Mitch Cooper capitalizing on a corner in the 10th minute to give the visitors the opening goal of the night. Moments later, Cooper made a mess of the Thunder's defence to slip through unattended and slam another into the back of the net, and with very little possession or control, the home side were losing any grip on the contest. City's high pressure game resulted in them controlling the tempo, but the Thunder were trying to create chances, but couldn't quite find an opening. James Brown made it three goals in the space of 15 minutes, making the most of a Gidi Sweet cross to seal the deal, and while they couldn't find another by half-time, the Thunder defence didn't get a second of rest, and fought tooth and nail to keep the score at 0-3. Some near misses early in the second half spelt immediate danger signs for the Thunder, before Brown once again made the most of his chances to kick his second in the 51st minute, sealing the match with plenty of time left to play. 36 STAR NEWS

dangerous openers Nathan King and Michael Vandort were sent back to the sheds without inflicting any real damage. But that's where the Maroons' momentum ended. Over the course of the day, the Bloods completely battered the home side to post an incredible 7/371, with Spoljaric scoring a mesmerising 132 off 159 balls. Spoljaric blasted seven sixes and eight fours in his whirlwind knock, and now has 721 runs at the impressive age of 65.5. A sixth Wookey Medal is not out of the question. The Bloods' middle order compiled in brilliant fashion, with Tim Ford (42), Craig Slocombe (39), Jack Sketcher (45), Jarrod Armitage (35), as well as Malinga Bandara (20 not out) and Matt Wetering (20 not out) all finding plenty of runs. On a tough day for the Maroons, skipper Asfan Thajudeen (3/65) battled manfully to take three wickets. Buckley Ridges also enjoyed a fruitful day at the office against a desperate Mordialloc side at Ben Kavanagh Reserve, clawing its way back from a tricky position to post a strong 8/272. Despite the usual fireworks from the returning Daniel Watson (75 off 69 balls) at the top end, the Bucks struggled to get their game going, falling to 5/112 and with young Lucca Parkinson (3/31) in fine form. Watson - returning from a one match suspension - lost none of his spark, cracking 10 fours and two sixes, before his untimely departure. But they slowly clawed their way back, go-
ing against their natural game to rebuild the innings, with the experienced Greg Todd (59) doing a stellar job to hold the innings together and build partnerships with Suren Ekanayake (23) and Matt Goodwright (60 not out) - who played a stunning hands to lift the visitors to a highly competitive total. Todd chewed up 159 balls, and crucially, spent time at the crease at a time where the Bloodhounds were up and about and in good rhythm on a pitch well suited to bowling. But it's simple for the Bloodhounds: lose and their season is basically over, but if they win, they can stand a fighting chance of still defending their consecutive premierships. And in the final game of the round, St Mary's and Heinz Southern Districts is well placed down at Thomas Carroll Reserve, with Ruwantha Kellepotha's remarkable individual season once again continuing. The Cobras were in deep trouble after being sent in to bat, falling to 5/47 in the early stages, before saving face a little and inching their way to 134, with skipper Trevor Davies top-scoring with 38. But it was the brilliant spin of Kellepotha that was once again an obstacle to dread for the opposition, with the gun offie taking 5/42 to take his season wicket tally up to a brilliant 37 from 13 games. The Saints got to a stumps in a reasonably comfortable position, reaching 2/41 after two early wickets, but are well on their way to a victory that could see them avoid relegation next season.

DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 13 (DAY ONE) Both sides are up to their eyeballs in the Turf 1 premiership race, and both entered Saturday's clash in remarkably even form. And yet, after the first day of action at Frawley Road - in a day full of tension, twists and turns of momentum, and individual brilliance - both Berwick and Hallam Kalora Park simply can't be split. Matt Chasemore elected to bat, knowing all too well how electric his openers, Jordan Cleland and Nathan Pilon have been so far this season. But both were back in the sheds early, and suddenly the Bears need some stability at 2/7 while Jordan Hammond (2/20) and Will Whyte (3/41) navigated the new ball superbly. Matt Robertson and Josh Holden withstood plenty of heat to see off the new ball, but change bowlers Chris Pereira (1/37) and Leigh Booth (3/12) went bang, removing the pair and leaving the visitors hanging precariously at 4/35. Chasemore used all of his class to show his trademark fight, defying the brilliance of the home side's bowling group to strike a class half-century in what has been a terrific season for the former Premier star, but his knock came to an end on 62 after Whyte managed to trap him in front. The Bears fought hard to bat out the day, with the tail wagging big time. Brendan Rose (21), Isaiah Jassal (19), Cory Bevan (10) and Jarrod Goodes (28 off 18 balls) made some vital runs, to be bowled out for 199 only minutes before stumps. The great Steven Spoljaric, meanwhile, belted his 19th Dandenong District century, and his third of the season for Springvale South as the Bloods went berserk against North Dandenong at Lois Twohig.

It's tons of fun for Wells By Nick Creely Luke Wells' sheer impact as a leader of CaseySouth Melbourne can never be underestimated. He has provided a calm head and possesses a presence that has made his teammates walk taller, but the Sussex opening batsman's impact with the bat has been extraordinary too. He's a run machine who has taken the competition by storm. On Saturday, in what is likely to be his final dig before he heads back home to link up with Sussex, the stylish left hander produced a memorable century in what has been a remarkable season. And it came against the in-form Essendon, in a match that is likely to determine whether his side will be seeing any finals action. The Bombers made the Swans really work early, and promising opener Ryan Quirk departed without troubling the scorers, edging the ball to slip in a great piece of bowling by Matt Doric. Wells and youngster Joel Mitchell (19) fought hard to withstand plenty of heat, with the latter looking particularly strong in defence, before an untimely chip back to the bowling of Connor Rutland brought about his downfall. The skipper continued to play his way, however, quickly flashing the arms at anything short to send the ball crashing to the square boundaries on several occasion, and used superb placement and timing to pick apart the gaps off the quicks. Off the spin bowling of James Seymour, Wells refused to let him settle into a rhythm, using his feet to loft one down the ground. Right before lunch, Wells raised the bat for a superb half-century with some classic strokeplay, with his Swans reaching the luncheon break on 2/80. But it was after lunch that Wells truly took toll on the Bombers. The skipper upped the ante, and combined for a brilliant partnership with a fellow tall leftie in Michael Wallace to pile on the pain.
Luke Wells raises the bat after yet another sparkling century. Picture: COURTESY OF CRICKET VICTORIA/ARJ GIESE
The pair swiftly got the home side to an imposing 3/191, with Wells surging to yet another century despite very nearly falling for 87 after a drop catch by the keeper that couldn't quite be snaffled by first slip too, and made his way to 114 at tea, reaching the three figures with a glorious six down the ground, with Wallace providing superb support with 45 runs of his own. After tea, the pair simply could do no wrong. Wells crossed 1000 runs for the season as he continued to showcase his aggressive side and cross 150 with over 20 overs left in the day, while Wallace also picked up more
momentum to send a couple sailing over the ropes and near a second century of the season. But just nine runs short of his triple figures, he was run-out in the cruellest fashion, with a straight drive coming off the fingers of the bowler and crashing into the stumps on the bowlers end with their partnership on 198. With a licence to excite, Jordan Wyatt crashed them to the boundary to reach 21 off his first 16 balls, helping the home side surge past the 300 mark. And Wells simply kept going, spelling trouble for the visitors. Wyatt's remarkable cameo culminated with
a breathtaking half-century off 30 balls, and he took 24 off just one over from Doric as he crashed three sixes to the boundary in epic fashion. He finished with a remarkable 74 off 38. But Wells was just as spectacular, reaching 197 not out off 258 balls, but unselfishly declared on 4/396 to narrowly miss out on the double but still carry his bat, to allow the Swans a late dip with the ball. The Bombers managed to survive the final two overs of the day, finishing 0/0 off two overs, with James Seymour and Aaron Ayre to continue next week.
