Where Wallys rule They were dressed to blend into the crowd, but Kerry Holland and her Where’s Wally Walkers team stood out in this year’s 2019 Cardinia Relay for Life. They epitomise what the event is all about. Every team member has been touched in some way by cancer, Kerry explained. “They have either lost loved ones to cancer, have been or are currently carers for loved ones with cancer, or have survived or are currently battling cancer themselves.” Kerry has participated in the Cardinia Relay for Life event since 2013. Since then she has spent many months in the Alfred hospital for more chemo, radiation, a bone marrow transplant and she still has chemo every month at the Alfred. “My experience has seen not only the research needed to help find a cure and better treatment options, but also the money needed for equipment and support services,” she said. “However, my battle is just one small example of what so many people are going through. Every team member of Where’s Wally Walkers has had their lives touched in some way by cancer. “For me the hardest part of battling cancer is that my children, friends and family have had to witness my battle and all the ugliness and heartbreak that comes with it. “I have been so lucky though to have an incredible circle of support from family, friends and work.” Kerry says the Relay For Life event brings a rollercoaster of emotions for team members. “We get to share each other’s stories and battles, support each other, remember and celebrate the people we’ve lost, and also feel as though we’re helping in some way towards trying to find a cure and the provision of much needed support services. “In many ways I guess it’s our way to ‘stick it’ to cancer! “The team spirit is amazing and we’re able

to draw strength from each other, inspire each other, cry, walk through the night also meeting other teams and making new friendships, and also having a lot of fun and laughs!” The Where’s Wally Walkers raised $16,910 up to the end of the relay on Saturday and still have money coming in. They carried their baton for 224 laps of the Toomuc Recreation Reserve - amounting to over 78 kilometres - they won the Lip Sync Battle on the Friday night and received the trophy for Best Decorated Marquee. The award for the highest fundraising team went to the 1959-61 Ford Fairlane and Classic Cruiser Club of Australia, which amassed over $20,000. The Cardinia Relay For Life raised more than $116,000 overall, which far exceeded expectations and took the total raised over seven years to over $660,000. For more on the event, turn to pages 38-39.
