Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired founder Alan Lachman is doing all he can to build a positive future for the school. 190869

Blind faith Victoria’s only school for the blind and vision impaired has closed its doors after the State Government failed to provided much-needed financial support. Insight Education for the Blind and Vision Impaired Berwick (Insight) founder Alan Lachman recently informed the Victorian Registration Qualifications Authority (VRQA) that the school has decided to not operate in 2019 or 2020. “While the school remains registered with the VRQA, its status is under active review,” VRQA department spokesperson said. “Among the issues facing the school are extremely low enrolments over several years. There are no students currently enrolled.” In the beginning of 2018, there were 11 students enrolled. By the end of 2018, Mr Lachman said three or four students were made to enrol in a mainstream school and the rest graduated. Mr Lachman said the school became “unviable” after the Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) operatives in regions and schools have “worked tirelessly for six years to block nearly 80 families from enrolling their children at Insight.” “In those six years we have assumed that if we demonstrated what we were doing with

children that the incredible pushback against Insight would disappear and that we would end up with a partnership,” he said. “The mission of Insight is to give the children numeracy, literacy and life-skills but most of all self-confidence and self-esteem. We get them to catch-up because they’re almost always behind and then we exit them from Insight into the mainstream. “We aim to boost students’ performance and make sure they’re successful in the mainstream.” As a last resource, Mr Lachman is asking the Federal Government for $2.2m to fund Insight’s five-year plan. The P-8 school operation is now ‘on-hold’ for two years while Insight focuses entirely on engagement with 450 mainstream schools, DET headquarters, and 820 kindergartens to build awareness to gain future enrolments. According to Mr Lachman, Minister for Education James Merlino promised $1.5m to Insight by July 2018 for 18 months of Insight engagement activity with mainstream schools to build awareness, break down barriers and build enrolments however the money was never received. Insight has received government funding totally over $12m over nine years for buildings and operations including $2.14m in 2011 from the State Government, $1.5m in 2013 from the

Federal Government and a further $2.4m in 2014 from the State Government. Member for La Trobe Jason Wood played a major role in securing the $1.5m 2013 funding and has been backing Insight since. “The State Government has simply starved the school of students,” Mr Wood said. “Mr Lachman has always tried to work with the State Government but each time he thinks he gets close to getting somewhere it hasn’t quite happened. “The big issue has been that the school needs the DET and the education minister to encourage parents who have blind and vision impaired children to enrol them at Insight.” Recently, Mr Lachman sold his house for around $200,000 to pay staff salaries. “He’s using his own money and has even taken loans out to keep the school going,” Mr Wood said. “We can’t ask him for any more than what he’s already done, it’s about time the State Government recognised Alan’s hard work.” Every student that was enrolled at Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired costs the government around $40,000. “Mr Lachman previously had agreements with DET to encourage schools to send more children to Insight. As far as I was convinced, everything was on-track,” he said.

IN BRIEF

Cars strike twice By Jessica Anstice Narre Warren South residents are calling for urgent safety upgrades after vehicles have ploughed into a family home twice in the past 10 months at The Promenade. Over the last 18 months, residents have witnessed multiple car accidents causing major structural damage to properties and vehicles along the street. Home-owner Jackie Moroney and her family were forced to relocate for five months after the first vehicle crashed into their home, landing on a bed and ending up in a walk-in-robe in April 2018. "It was extremely distressing to all members of my family. After this event the City Of Casey did some road monitoring and did not implement any road calming devices," she said. "I have since been informed that only 85 percent of the traffic flow adheres to the 40km/h speed limit whilst they were being monitored. This still means 15 percent are not adhering to the speed limit." As the Moroney family live in constant fear of the road outside their home, they no longer use the front end of the house. "My husband and I have not slept in the main bedroom since returning home after the first major accident," she said. "We have since constructed an urgent retaining wall to endeavour to protect our family and property. "We live in fear that next time it may not be us but one of our neighbours or worse, an innocent child crossing the road to get to school." The last crash on 3 February this year caused damage to the car parked in the driveway, the garage wall and door, the letterbox and the fence. "If it was not for the parked car we fear the speeding car would have landed in my neighbour Chris Politis' house," she said. Mr Politis has five children all under the age of 14. He said he is "constantly concerned" for

his children's safety. "At times, I am concerned about my safety while reversing out of my own driveway," Mr Politis said. "It is a 40km/h area and on many occasions vehicles do not travel at a safe speed around the bend. "There have been many occasions that I have looked behind me and as far as the eye can see to ensure it is safe to reverse and before you know it I have a vehicle tail gating me due to their excessive speed." The state of the road makes resident Nicole Fletcher feel 'uneasy, nervous and concerned' for the safety of herself and her children. Many have contacted the City of Casey with their concerns of road safety within the immediate area. Residents believe the cause of the crashes have been because of 'inadequate' major road infrastructure, the increased volume of traffic through the residential estate, speed and driver distraction. "The population growth in Casey combined with the development towards Clyde, has meant our area has become a cut through from Clyde Road to Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road," neighbour Bianca Hyde said. "Our end of The Promenade was never this busy as the traffic funnelled up Robinswood Parade, however, speed devices have seen the traffic come our way."

Mrs Moroney said the City of Casey has informed them that there is no immediate plan to develop Glasscocks Road and has no plans to attend to the major road infrastructure to ease the volume of residential traffic. "In our original plans when I built my home over 20 years ago it showed there was a proposed road to run straight down where Glasscocks Road ends at Casey Central," Mrs Moroney said. "If this road was developed it would ease major road traffic from entering the residential area." City of Casey has proposed to install rubber speed humps on each of the two approaches to the bend outside of the property. "The rubber speed hump to be located on the southern approach will be installed in the next few weeks following consultation with the adjoining properties," City of Casey city design and construction manager Trevor Griffin said. "For the eastern approach, a new light will need to be installed approximately midway between the bend and the roundabout to enhance night time visibility." Mr Griffin said the local power authority will arrange for the installation of the light, after which time the speed hump will be installed. "Following discussions with the resident we have prioritised these works due to the nature of the concerns raised," he said.

Ready to relay - and fight cancer again By Jessica Anstice This year's Casey Relay for Life will see Pakenham's Bronwyn Robinson return to the track for the seventh year as the All Night for the Fight team captain. Since 2013 Ms Robinson with her family members, Troy, Courtney, Tyson, Bethany and Thomas, along with her mum and dad, Ruth and Gary Nichols have walked the track each year for Ms Robinson's sister, Angela Wilson and her aunty, Gaye. Ms Robinson and her family have been heavily involved in the Casey Relay for Life. In 2016 Ms Robinson's sister and niece cut the ribbon to open the relay. Bulldogs AFLW player Ellie Blackburn has also been part of the team since 2013. The All Night for the Fight team started as Beaconsfield Youth Girls in 2013.

In 2016 the name of the team was changed to All Night for the Fight as the team opened up to more family and friends. "At the time my cousin was running the kids advent in the middle so he got us to know all about it," Ms Robinson said. "He thought it would be a great thing for the Beaconsfield Youth Girls football team to give back to the community." The All Night for the Fight team will be selling donuts, cupcakes, pies, cakes and much more at the event. A special cookbook with homemade recipes will be auctioned off and more will be sold at their stand. Many other fundraising endeavours have taken place over the last few months, including a shopping tour and a dinner at Shanikas Pakenham.

"Relay for Life is so much fun, you talk to people you don't know and you meet up with people that also are there," Ms Robinson said. "It is just like a big party they put on, nothing like doing 24 hours of good to help raise money and have fun along the way. "I am there from set up to pack down and it is just an amazing feeling, and I have to say not much happens in the house on the Sunday after it." All Night for the Fight has set a fundraising goal of $12,500 and are currently sitting on almost $9,500. The Casey Relay for Life will take place at Akoonah Park Berwick on Friday 1 March. Unknown offenders stole a handbag from a woman visiting Fountain Gate Shopping Centre before stealing her car from the shopping centre’s top level car park.

Thieves stole handbag, keys, car Unknown offenders stole a handbag from a woman visiting Fountain Gate Shopping Centre before stealing her car from the shopping centre's top level car park near the Village Cinemas entrance. At about 2.40pm on February 2 Chloe White received three phone calls from a private number explaining that her handbag had been picked up accidentally and it would be returned shortly with all of its contents. "The first time they called me they said 'Hey Chloe, I have got your purse and your keys, my son picked it up so I am coming back to give it to you'," Ms White said. The second time they asked Ms White where she was and the third time they asked to meet her near the bank, "I'm in a blue Swift, I'm parked, I'm at Coles carpark, I'm coming down," the unknown person said over the phone. Ms White said the unknown person sounded 'genuine' and 'apologetic' on the phone. "I didn't think anything suspicious of it, I felt excited that someone would be so nice to give me my purse back," she said. Two hours after the phone call, Ms White went to the carpark where she had parked her 2017 blue Holden Astra sedan to find that it too, had been stolen. "My heart was so broken, I was in tears," she said. "I couldn't believe anyone would do this to me, and lead me on like they did."

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with William Zhang, volunteer fire fighter at Narre Warren North CFA brigade.

How long have you been a volunteer firefighter and why did you decide to join? I have just joined CFA Narre Warren North Brigade for nearly 12 months. I hoped to be more involved in the community in which I live, learn some skills, and spend my spare time more meaningfully. I am also really impressed and inspired by other members' decades of long services for CFA. What have been some incidents you have attended with the CFA that you will never forget? I have attended motor vehicle accidents, gas fire, car fires etc. Since I am relatively still a newbie, every incident is pretty much a valuable opportunity for me to gain more handson knowledge and experience. What is something people don't know about you? I have been secretly enjoying the Monday-$10discount movie tickets at a cinema close to my uni. I would spend some Monday late afternoons and evenings after uni on my own watching a couple of movies there. What is your most memorable moment? I have made it to my first ever strike team at Grantville bushfire earlier this year under the mentorship of brigade crews and leaders. Where did you grow up as a child? I grew up in Shanghai, and my parents and I moved here to Melbourne when I was 15. What is your favourite movie? Into the Wild (2007) If you were PM for a day, what would you do? I would try to work more on issues of men's mental health and family violence. What are you currently studying? I am studying Classics and Linguistics at Melbourne Uni while working as an interpreter. Favourite holiday spot in Australia? The Overland Track in Tasmania that I have just come back from is not bad at all! What's your favourite book? The Hunter, by Julia Leigh.

On 22 February, a story was shared on the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page about a Cranbourne chiropractor who appeared in shocking images of manipulating a baby's spine. Here is how some readers reacted online: Leonie Knight: Andrew Arnold and his wife are extremely professional and experienced at there profession. Unless you have actually been a patient of Andrews you really shouldn't make comments. Andrew helped me for over two years. If the parents didn't want the treatment why take the baby. This is a setup otherwise it wouldn't have been videotaped. Why didn't the parents say stop because Andrew doesn't treat you if you don't want it. Kerryanne Harris: All my children were seen by chiropractors under a week old. Alternate therapies have been around for thousand of years before modern medicine. 70 years ago children were born and hung upside down and slapped on the back without appropriate

training. Chiropractors have trained for many years and then they specialise in woman and children. Every chiropractor talks parents through the procedure and if they are not comfortable it is stopped. Leonie Durrington: Good! Chiropractors do more harm than good. Lisa Williams: Great chiropractor, not a bad word to say about this guy. Mark Mathews! What one or two week old needs chiropractic work? Alan Thompson: Why was the baby there in the first place? Has the parents be questioned? Jimmy Baker: The video looked horrific obviously, I wonder how far away from acceptable practice it is from a professionals perspective? Andrew has been around for years and have had several treatments by him. Seemed very professional. Stacie Freeman: How do you know if a baby needs to see one? Calling for urgent upgrade The fatal accident at the Wellington Road and Berwick Road intersection on Saturday 23 February shows again the dangers of high-volume uncontrolled intersections, according to the Cockatoo 21st Century Roads Action Group (CRAG 21). VicRoads traffic counts for 2016 show 14,500 vehicles per day on Wellington Road on the west side of this intersection, 10,000 vehicles per day on the east side and 4500 vehicles per day using Berwick Road. CRAG 21 member Sue Wales said the group is calling for urgent action to introduce traffic signals with warning lights similar to the Lysterfield Road intersection at the Berwick Road intersection. "The frequency of lesser incidents at the intersection has been an ongoing concern. Sadly, this time the accident has been a fatality," Ms Wales said. "Consideration also needs to be given to duplicating Wellington Road from Napoleon Road in Rowville to the Berwick Road intersection to relieve congestion and address other safety issues. "The intersection of Kelletts Road and Wellington Road is also uncontrolled and carries substantial traffic." The absence of VicRoads funding has resulted in CRAG 21 approaching Member for La Trobe Jason Wood and Labor's candidate Simon Curtis at the next Federal Election regarding the importance of major improvements on Wellington Road in the hope that some Federal monies can be secured. "Wellington Road is a key arterial for people in Melbourne's outer east and south-east," Ms Wales said. "The advocacy efforts of Cardinia Shire Council and Brad Battin MP are appreciated, but MPs for electorates which Wellington Road passes through and the abutting councils also need to take up the challenge. "It is acknowledged that the state has allocated record funds for transport infrastructure in inner and middle Melbourne and growth areas, but the needs in Melbourne's outer east are equally deserving."

St John of God Auxiliary was treated to an afternoon of enlightenment as five special nurses gave talks on their experiences as volunteers overseas at an AGM on Monday 18 February. Guest speaker Karen Thompson spoke on her experience aboard the Mercy Ship Australia stationed in Africa as part of a medical team. She said healthcare and the health system is very expensive in Africa so patients come to the Mercy Ship for treatment, some taking days to get there. The small hospital on board the ship caters for bites, burns, hernias, cataracts etc and serious cases such as burst appendices. Other guest speakers included four delightful nurses, Tess Matthews, Madeline White, Bridget Adams and Natalie Mason. These young nurses volunteered, raising their own expenses to go to Nepal and Kathmandu as part of a program called World Youth in Action.

From left, St John of God nurses Madeline White, Tess Matthews, Bridget Adams, Natalie Mason and Karen Thompson with St John of God Auxiliary president Trish Nicholson at the auxiliary AGM. 189917 The program itself started 21 years ago to help third world countries get better healthcare and teach better hygiene. For example, the nurses spoke of rubber

gloves being used for one patient and washed out to use on the next patient. The four nurses cared for many patients, also staying in patients' homes to teach home-care. "Tess, Maddie, Bridget and Natalie said their experiences will live with them for a lifetime," St John of God Auxiliary member Anne Crockett said. "They thanked us (St John of God Auxiliary) for our support and contributions to their expenses. These young nurses are a credit to the hospital and themselves and the auxiliary had pleasure listening to them." The St John of God Auxiliary meeting will take place on Monday 18 March. An auxiliary member will talk on 'Harmony Day'. Meetings are held at the Berwick RSL, 17 Langmore Lane, Berwick. Anyone wishing to come along or join can call Ms Crockett on 9707 3425.

Flanked by a huge brace of family, Doreen 'Peg' Hill celebrated her 90th birthday in dappled sunshine at Wilson Botanic Park. The Dandenong-born great-grandmother says she made a point of always being there for her kids. And they were there for her at her garden party on 23 February. They included many of her four sons Neville, Kevin, Bruce and Rodney, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. "I just think having a wonderful family ... I'm so blessed." A self-described 'home-body', Ms Hill says she had been a mother "from the word go". "I always wanted to be a mother and believed in being there for your children."

The first five years are the most important in a child's life, she says. It's the stable foundation before they go to school. It's certainly worked for her four sons, who'd do anything to help anyone, she says. Born on 27 February 1929, Ms Hill is grateful for her, brother Des and sister Irene being raised strictly by parents Maurie and Esme Bending. "We got older and we realised how well brought-up we were. "We were taught to respect other people." Maurie was well-known around Dandenong as a tiler who packed his tiles and tools all onto a bicycle. "You wouldn't get away with it these days." After attending Dandenong State School, she

worked in an insurance office in Melbourne and Ivan Jenning's taxation accountancy in Dandenong. She met her husband Arthur Hill - a Drouin-based milk transporter - at the Saturday night dances at Dandenong Town Hall. They married in 1952, settling and raising their family next to the Mechanics' Hall in Narre Warren. In later life, they moved to Manuka Road, Berwick. After her husband died, Ms Hill has moved in with her youngest son Rodney in Beaconsfield in 2001. Beforehand, Ms Hill insisted she didn't want a special 90th birthday party. But she clearly revelled in the family coming together from interstate. "I'm blessed to get to 90. I've got to keep living. I've got to keep around for my greatgrandchildren."

Truck rolls on freeway By Jessica Anstice Motorists on the Monash Freeway experienced major delays inbound after a truck rolled over on Thursday. The truck was carrying building supplies and the crash caused stones to spill on the freeway in Narre Warren, near Narre Warren

North Road. Two of the three lanes were closed from 4.30am onwards. Commuters were asked to use to the Princes Highway as an alternative route. The freeway was re-opened at around 7.30am.

The benefits of property Want to get into the property market, either via SMSF's or individually, but don't have enough deposit or don't qualify serviceability wise? After 26 years of successfully guiding people into the best forms of property investing, Kelvin of Safe Super Homes in Berwick says fractional investing is the best way to start - via RESIbricks. "This can improve and be offset by better hand selected local residential investment returns, given latest changes to investment market," Kelvin said. "Options available by RESIbricks, which is relatively new in Australia, have formed a terrific way for average and new investors to get the benefit of diversification and success - all with expert honest management and cost. "Residential fractional by RESIbricks is now available via Safe Super Homes, where better quality houses have made an average of 16.4% pa over the last 26 years, despite the three blips in residential prices during those years. In local residential housing, we anticipate a 7% return. This should be compared to zero return in your super fund in 2018 and other earlier years." Kelvin said that the rationale behind fractional investing "can be pretty compelling".

"At low cost entry into affordable property areas - drive your growth better in difficult times." But how is that done? "Young working adults and their parents are constantly worried at the high cost of housing in Melbourne and are keen for any worthwhile solution that helps them start their rewarding property journey, to commence the great Aussie dream, for an outlay of $50,000 plus," Kelvin said. "The idea of buying fractional units in a good residential property, with guaranteed rent, is seen as a great step up the property ladder. "Just like the process of when either you or your employer chose the Manager of your super fund, the success of fractional investing comes down to the best in (1) product (2) fees (3) investment percentage returns. "So, find the right property, in the right area, with the right returns and right professional services." These are the keys offered by Kelvin and Clyde at Safe Super. Feel free to find out more by attending a seminar on Wednesday 6 March at 7pm at the Safe Supers home office. Bookings are required.

HOME FOCUS

CONVENIENT TO THE CITY AND COAST KILCUNDA is a popular meeting point for Bass Coast residents for more than just its stunning coastal views and iconic pub and cafe. Located on the main highway linking Cowes, Inverloch and Wonthaggi, the small township is a convenient halfway point for social catch ups and business meetings. It’s also considerably closer to Melbourne than all of them. These days, with the Koo Wee Rup bypass, it’s an easy 45-minute drive from Kilcunda to Pakenham, which puts it within commuting distance for Melbourne part-timers, home-based businesses and workers in the south-eastern suburbs. The housing stock in the small village is starting to reflect the changes, with new homes being built both inside the existing township and on its outskirts. “We have seen an increase in interest from people planning a move to the coast whilst continuing some form of city-based work,” 1st Choice Estate Agency agent Nicola Bellward said. “With the NBN now part of Kilcunda’s fabric, there is more scope for internetbased businesses, and the increasing population, Bass Coast is expanding the need for service industries.” Crystalbrook Estate, located out towards the trestle bridge on the way to Wonthaggi, is one of the expansion areas. “There are only 15 blocks remaining in the final stage,” Nicola said. “And at prices below $300,000 for block sizes of up to over 1,000 square metres, most with potential for views down the coast, it’s great buying.” For those who don’t want to build, 1st Choice is also marketing a stunning new luxury five bedroom home in the existing township, perfect for a family with a busy lifestyle. They are also looking for a buyer for a secluded modern three bedroomed home in the heart of town, which would make a perfect weekender but also offers investors a solid rental return in the tight and popular Kilcunda rental market. “Whichever way you look at it, Kilcunda is going places and the tyranny of distance is becoming less and less of an issue,” Nicola said. “It’s the best of both worlds - and there are always those views!”●

The Tooradin North Post Office in 1965. Image courtesy the National Archives of Australia.

70 Langtree Lane, Tooradin.

The original house and post office are visible at the left of the current property.

TOORADIN HISTORY POSTED FOR SALE By Narelle Coulter IN its heyday last century the Tooradin North Post Office was a vital part of the farming community that surrounded it. People popped by the post office to collect their mail, make a phone call on the party line, buy a stamp or collect their daily newspaper. Today remnants of that history are still visible in the sprawling family home that sold this month for $1,175,000 at 70 Langtree Road, Tooradin. Keith Murphy, who still owns part of the original property, has fond memories of growing up there in the 1950s. Langtree Road sits between Tooradin Station Road and Muddy Gates Lane. His parents, Keith Senior and Gladys Murphy, bought the then 100 acre property in 1954. Keith Senior ran the property as a dairy farm and Gladys looked after the post office, which was located in a small room

accessed from an alcove at the front of the house. In the 1950s the weatherboard farmhouse was typical of the era with three bedrooms, a kitchen with slow combustion stove and separate lounge room. The toilet was “down the backyard“ where copperhead snakes often lurked. Bees had built hives in the walls of the old house and Keith remembers honey dripping down the walls. The house was called Bundalhon back then, though Keith is unsure of the origin of the name. He recalls being told it meant ’happy home’. As a boy it was Keith’s job to collect the mail from the nearby train station. “We had to collect the mail at the station daily. Originally when we sent the mail out we had to tie string around the bag and put wax around it and stamp it with a seal,“ he said. “The papers used to come by train too

and I’d have to collect those as well.“ Keith remembers getting scolded by his father one day because he sold one of the newspapers to a passenger on a train parked temporarily at Tooradin North. The bloke had called out to him through the train window and offered him “two bob“ for a newspaper. “I got home and was very proud of myself but dad was very angry because I had sold someone’s paper so he had to go and get another one.“ People without home telephones would use the public phone attached to a wall on the outside of the building. Keith remembers the post office call sign - two shorts, a long and a short. “I got in trouble for picking up the phone and listening to converstations.“ In 1963, Gladys Murphy fell ill and could no longer run the post office. Her duties were assumed by a Mrs Carlisle who lived at the station master’s house.

Keith Senior sold the property in 1965 for 7500 pounds to Greek brothers Con and George Nelios. They brothers were fishmongers who lived in Gardenvale and used the Tooradin property on weekends. “I remember they held an engagement party there once for their son and it lasted three days. You could hear the music for miles,“ said Keith. The Nelios brothers sold the land under separate titles in the 1980s, and in 1988 Keith bought back the house in which he grew up. He renovated it and let it out, but sold it again after a few years because of problems with tenants. “Anyone else would have pulled it down, but because I grew up there I wanted to preserve it,“ he explained. Keith is elated that the vendors incorporated the old house into their extenisve renovations. “I’m so pleased to see that it has been renovated and its history is still there.“● 12412690-CG10-19

NEWS

Up all night Valulife is gearing up to walk laps for the ninth consecutive year at the 2019 Casey Relay for Life. This time around, Matthew Hoiles has taken the role of team captain as former captain Dianna Pryde was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2018. "My family and I decided to get into relaying to help raise money for cancer research as cancer has touched the lives of so many of our loved ones and friends," Ms Pryde said. Ms Pryde's youngest sister Valerie passed away at age 47 from breast cancer. Valerie's work colleague Amber Erickson and Valerie's daughter Melissa formed the team in honour of the brave woman. "Valerie's death made up value life even more, hence the team name Valulfe," Ms Pryde added. "We have since lost many other family and friends which makes us more determined to keep going." The team of 30 dedicated family and friends have had pie drives, trivia nights, car rallies, theatre nights, golf days, hair shaves and nu-

merous raffles to raise money for the cause. The team has raised more than $80,000 over the nine years they have participated in the Casey Relay for Life. Valulfe's end goal is to raise as much money as possible to contribute to cancer research. Donald Duck was Valerie's favourite Disney character so the team chose 'duck off to cancer' as their slogan with a life-size Donald Duck as their mascot. "The Casey Relay for Life is a magnificent event that brings people together to remember loved ones, support survivors and those currently going through their cancer journey," she said. "The candle ceremony is a moving experience and an opportunity to pay tribute to loved ones." The Casey Relay for Life will take place at Akoonah Park Berwick on Friday 1 March. So far, Valulfe are sitting at the top of the Casey Relay for Life leader board for their fundraising efforts, with a total of $11,298. Red Gems keep the faith By Jessica Anstice Casey Relay for Life team Red Gems will relay into its second year on Friday evening. Relay for Life has a different meaning to so many, whether it is a celebration for those that have survived, or a sad memory for those that have been taken by the dreaded cancer. Some even relay for those they don't know, but want to help raise much needed money to find a cure for cancer. Team member Stuart Woolf started relaying eight years ago after his family member passed away at age 37 from cancer. He felt helpless and started relaying with Casey in honour of her. For the last seven years Mr Woolf has been team captain for his own team, In Loving Memory, but chose to join the Red Gems team for this year as he sadly lost his father late last year after a three year battle of pancreatic cancer. "We will all be there to support our mate Stuart and family, and know his dad will be proudly watching over him during the 24 hour event," team captain Kerryn Cerchiaro said. Debbie Hooke has been relaying for two years with team Red Gems. She relays for a number of people in her life that have been touched by cancer. Member Simon Johnson started relaying after he lost his mum to bowel cancer. He participates for his dad beating prostate cancer because he wants to support those who have supported them. Anna Mangano joined Red Gems, formally 'Corrie's Crew' six years ago, when her dad was battling cancer, now a survivor.

Maree Quinn, Debbie Hooke, Luisa and Georgia Lacandro, Robert and Kerryn Cerchiaro, Stuart Woolf, Donna Harrison, Phil and Chantelle Hooke are all apart of the Casey Relay for Life team Red Gems and will relay into their second year on Friday evening. 190661 "I want to help raise much needed funds for cancer research," Ms Mangano said. "Relay for Life is a great event and a very humbling experience." Red Gems' Jo Knezevic has many reasons to relay today. Sadly she lost three of her grandparents and step father to cancer, and now her father inlaw is battling terminal prostate cancer. This year, Ms Cerchiaro's son Lachlan and his two friends Mitch Hutchison and Kai Harris are shaving their long locks of hair and raising money for the team. They will be onstage at 12pm on Saturday. With a huge range of activities and lots to see and do, crowds enjoyed a great day out at the 170th Berwick Show over the weekend. Over 5000 visitors, exhibitors and competitors were captivated by all of the talent and entertainment that was presented over the twoday event at Akoonah Park. “We are able to bring our local diverse community together to enjoy the many talents our community has to offer,” Berwick Show president Melissa Hogg said. “The show allows locals to showcase their talents and bring some of the country back to an ever growing suburban area.” Music played by local artists was heard from the main stage throughout the day as guests wandered around the showgrounds. The pavilions, sheds and surrounding paddocks were full with cattle, sheep, alpacas and more while horses, ponies and dogs could be spotted all around. “The shows highlights are all so different for everything but I hope we were able to offer plenty for all,” Ms Hogg said. “Our exciting main arena program was one of the main attractions, as was the kidding around area, the wood-chopping, and the livestock and the craft and art competitions. “To celebrate 170 years we had few special cooking and craft, horticulture and photographer classes that were quite popular too.” Ms Hogg said the agriculture side of the show has dwindled as the local area doesn’t support it as much as it used too. “But the heart and essence of the show still remains,” she said. “It is important also to move into the 21st century.” City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon presented a certificate of congratulations to the Berwick Show volunteer committee. During her speech, Cr Stapledon reflected on the show’s history and what it has lead up to. “Over the years, the Berwick Show has evolved significantly from what it was 170 years ago,” Cr Stapledon said. “It is still one of the largest agricultural and horticultural exhibits, including cattle, sheep, alpacas, goats and poultry. “This is a significant achievement considering the municipality is no longer considered a rural area.” Cr Stapledon said she was extremely excited to be at the show. “I am incredibly proud of this wonderful event that local families can enjoy without having to travel a long distance to do so,” she said. “The attendance is growing exceptionally. They had something for everyone and I just think its gets better every year.”

STAR NEWS 31

SPORT

A truly memorable night By Nick Creely This was no ordinary piece of silverware for all involved at St Brigid’s/St Louis. They’ve defied, stunned and brushed aside all those in their wake, no matter the opposition, in what had been a truly remarkable Twenty20 campaign for a club that is in the second tier of the Dandenong District Cricket Association. It’s now likely to be arguably the proudest moment in club history. The men from 'The Cave' ended their Dandenong District Twenty20 season with a stunning premiership, defeating yet another giant of the association last Wednesday night at Shepley Oval, Berwick - a side led by Matt Chasemore that has been one of the most consistent forces in Twenty20 cricket in the state, let alone the country. “It was a great campaign for the Twenty20 side - it was a great win, we beat all the big boys,” said proud club president Noel Fitzgibbon. “I’m very proud of the boys, they’ve done a sensational job, beating the big boys of the DDCA, to Springvale South, to Buckley (Ridges), and then Berwick, the state champions.” The club’s remarkable run towards the Twenty20 premiership started back on 24 October, ironically against Berwick, where they were absolutely thumped after a Nathan Pilon century, before bouncing back a few weeks later against Cranbourne. The third round saw them slump to a 1-2 record after a shock loss to Doveton, but evened the ledger with a comfortable victory over Springvale a week later. They then managed to scrape their way through to the quarter-finals with a strong win at home against Narre Warren. And that’s where things took a stunning turn. Severe underdogs, the men from the Cave met the powerhouse Springvale South away from home, but superbly defended 147 against a star-studded Bloods, setting up a crunch semi final against Buckley Ridges at Park Oval. The Bucks sent the ball whizzing the boundary to set the visitors a steep 195, but Vaib Deshpande had other ideas, blasting 104 as his side got home in the dying moments. It all came down to Wednesday’s grand final against the Bears - the third Turf 1 powerhouse in a row - at the home of the Dandenong Cricket Club. On a batting track that has seen plenty of runs this season, Chasemore’s side wasted little time and chose to bat, racking up 7/159 off their overs, with Matthew Hayes doing well with 2/33. But it was the great Nathan Pilon that once again shone, blasting 59 to cap off an extraordinary season with the white ball. As they have for the entirety of the tournament, they had their backs against the wall in the chase, with Deshpande and Jarrod Munday falling in the opening overs to leave them 2/8, with class acts Blade Baxter (2/27) and Brendan Rose (2/25) using all of their brilliance to immediately swing the game in the Bears’ favour.

Pictures: GARY SISSONS

Vaib Deshpande sends one down for the Saints on Wednesday night. 190565 Mark Jamieson (32) and Liam Harris (19) fought hard to try and tick the scoreboard, but the Bears’ experience and class with the white ball saw them slump to 4/65 and in danger of the game slipping away.Enter Matthew Hayes, who played his best knock of the season ... ..and at just the right time. Hayes took the bowling on to great success, sending nine fours and a six to the boundary on his way to 65 - his highest score of the season - drawing the underdogs close. Skipper Jeremy Heys (20 not out) took it upon himself to be the finisher, slamming a six over the ropes in the final over of the match, and suddenly, the Saints were no longer the underdogs, they were the champions of the Twenty20 caper of the DDCA. Fitzgibbon said the no one at his club will forget the moment the winning runs were scored - for a club that doesn’t demand the same attention as some of the powerhouses, these moments are made to savour. “It was one of the biggest wins the club’s ever had - the boys all play for each other, we’re a tight knit group, and they all played their part,” Fitzgibbon said. “We believed in ourselves, and our ability there’s been a few boys at the club that have been around for a long time, and they’ve been very good cricketers. “We had a squad of about 15 that all contributed and played their part, and we just didn’t fear anyone. We believed we could do it. “It’d be one of the better wins for this club - we were formed in 1954, we’ve won Turf 1 premierships, in the FDCA, BTCA, and for us

The All-Star Mile dream is well and truly alive for him

12400176-SN40-18

The All-Star Mile is the richest 1600-metre horse race in the world and with the event, being held at Flemington Racecourse on 16 March, just weeks away, a Berwick local has the chance of winning $250,000. Boasting a $5 million prize pool, the All-Star Mile is in its first year and is the only race in the country where the general public helps choose the final field of horses.

With voting now closed, the top 10 votegetters have qualified for the race and each of the 10 horses will be represented by a lucky ‘owner ambassador’. Almost 140,000 people voted for a horse, and those that voted for each of the top 10 vote-getters - which were unveiled last week were placed in a random draw with one voter per horse rewarded for helping to turn their favourite horse into an All-Star. A further four

wildcard horses were also granted entry into the race. Blake Hutchins of Berwick voted for Amphitrite, who finished fifth in voting, and was one of the lucky 10 voters to be given the tag of ‘owner ambassador’. If Amphitrite claims the win, he will walk away with $250,000. “The opportunity for owner ambassadors to be part of the day and experience the thrill

of racehorse ownership is an integral element of The All-Star Mile concept,” Racing Victoria’s executive general manager - racing, Greg Carpenter, said. “With each Owner Ambassador guaranteed to win at least $10,000 and the winner going home with $250,000, there are sure to be some wild celebrations on The All-Star Mile race day at Flemington on 16 March.”

Saints to host Turf 1 decider By Nick Creely The Dandenong District Cricket Association has announced the venues for this year's Turf grand finals, which will take place on 16 and 17 March before a standalone Turf 1 decider on 23 and 24 March. St Mary's home ground Carroll Reserve, located on Box Street in Dandenong, will host the standalone Turf 1 grand final for the second consecutive year, after an extremely successful fixture between Mordialloc and Springvale South in 2017/18. The four teams left in the premiership race with one round left to go in the home-and-away season are Springvale South, Berwick, Hallam Kalora Park and Buckley Ridges. After a full evaluation process by the DDCA match committee, the association has decided that the following clubs will host turf grand finals this season: berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Turf 1 - St Mary's (23 and 24 March) Turf 2 - Hallam Kalora Park Turf 3 - North Dandenong Turf 4 - Keysborough Turf 1 - Reserves - Narre Warren Turf 2 - Reserves - Heinz Southern Districts Turf 3 - Reserves - Coomoora Turf 4 - Reserves - Fountain Gate Turf 5 - Berwick Springs Turf 6 - Parkfield Spare ground - Narre North

Should Hallam Kalora Park be hosting the Turf 1 Preliminary Final on 16th/17th March, then the allocation of grand finals will change. Turf & synthetic Semi-final grounds will be determined following the completion of Round 14.

But they will need to take on a power packed Rams unit without Wells, who is now returning home to the UK to prepare for the County season for Sussex, which will give someone a chance to step up and finish their season in the top side.

Opener Jared Maxwell appears the most likely to get a recall to the ones for the final match, but talented top order bat Ashley Chandrasinghe or developing opener Blair Clymo could be in the running for a debut.

With just one round left to play in the home-and-away season, it appears that the Swans will miss out on a finals spot, but can finish their season on a high when they travel to take on Ringwood at Russell Lucas Oval on Saturday.

Essendon reeled in Casey-South Melbourne's monster total on Saturday, in one of the most stunning run chases of recent memory. As the sun glistened on what was a phenomenal batting track, it was obvious from the outset that it would be tough work for the bowlers. Off the back of Luke Wells' epic 197 on day one, the Bombers needed a similar innings to chase down the mammoth 397 set, and it came in the form of the Englishman's counterpart former Victorian batsman and Dons skipper Aaron Ayre. Despite losing the destructive James Seymour early after Jackson Fry (2/88) managed to find the edge of the opening batsman, the Dons made the most of an incredible bowling track with very little demons for the batting side. In warm conditions, Ayre was simply sublime, cracking 26 boundaries and a maximum on his way to a sparkling century, combining for a 141-run stand with a more subdued Justin Galeotti (38) in the early part of the day. Ayre provided a reminder of his abundance of class, looking in cruise mood for the majority of his innings before accelerating at the right time to get his side in the position to push for the points. Unable to find regular breakthroughs - similar to the Bombers on day one - Ayre looked like posting a memorable double century that will almost certainly have him in the minds of Victorian selectors, but fell for 173 off 184 balls, once again to Fry. But the damage was done. Left-hander Michael Hill (109 not out) rammed home the advantage, capitalising on a tired Swans bowling outfit, belting a century, with Isaac Willett (41 not out) also providing some fireworks to see the visitors home within 83 overs and with seven wickets still left in the shed.

Bears make some noise By Nick Creely It took until the second last round of the homeand-away season, but the finalists to fight for the DDCA Turf 1 premiership are finally locked in. Springvale South, Buckley Ridges, Berwick and Hallam Kalora Park will all see finals action this season; however the final makeup of the top four is yet to be determined. It means, however, that Mordialloc are officially out of the race to defend their premiership after going down. Most of the attention of the round was down at Frawley Road, where Hallam set about the task of chasing the 200 set by Matt Chasemore's Berwick on day one. Despite steady openers Ben Hillard (11) and Leigh Booth (25) working hard to see off the new ball, a stunning over from spearhead Brendan Rose (2/15) got the visitors up and about. Snaring the edge of Hillard at the start of the over to give Nathan Pilon some catching practice behind the stumps, Rose removed Jagveer Hayer four balls later without scoring, immediately placing the home side under pressure on 2/20. It took another stunning purple patch, this time from Jack Phillips (3/20), to truly take the game away, snaring gun batsmen Jaime Brohier and Jordan Hammond within three balls of each other. Booth fought hard to stay at the crease, but his undoing, brought about by a sublime catch by Matt Robertson off Jarrod Goodes (1/5), meant it was only a matter of time before the Bears could rattle through the tail. Surviving just the 54 overs, the Hawks rolled over for a mere 84, with Cory Bevan (3/18) continuing his fine season with another nice haul of wickets. North Dandenong, meanwhile, put in a

mighty effort but ultimately fell short of hauling in a monster chase against Springvale South. Chasing 372 for victory after a Steve Spoljaric century on day one, the Maroons were rocked by two early wickets, but managed to steady the ship largely through the efforts of opener Austin Heldt (55) in the first session. But it was a stunning partnership between Akshay Ballal (112) and Shehan Fernando (74) brought the game back to life, with Ballal in particularly carving the ball to all parts on his way to his third century of the season. With just 10 overs left in the game, the Ma-

roons appeared to be in the box seat at 4/295, requiring a further 77 runs for victory at a tick under eight an over. But spinner Jarryd Straker - as he has all season - delivered at an opportune time, snaring 5/73 to see the home side bowled out for a brave 344 in the 79th over. Meanwhile, down at Ben Kavanagh Reserve, Mordialloc's season finals hopes came to an end at the hands of Buckley Ridges. The Bloodhounds appeared to be cruising in their chase of 273, with Brendan Morris (59) and Ian Daniel (81) compiling a brilliant 141run opening stand, with Daniel's strokeplay in

particular an absolute delight. But that's where the home side's momentum came to an end, with the pair removed within minutes of each other. The Bucks rattled through the middle order superbly, with Greg Todd (3/39) in fine touch yet again, and the home side fell short, bowled out for 231. And Heinz Southern Districts (134 and 1/34) defeated St Mary's (84), which means the final round clash against North Dandenong will see the loser drop down into Turf 2 next season.

Finals draw closer CRANBOURNE BOWLS Both top Saturday pennant and midweek pennant sides had a shocker this week losing, to Hampton Park and Doncaster respectively, but the news was a lot better for most of the remaining Cranbourne sides. The second side defeated Noble Park by 21 shots, the third side defeated Vermont South by 66 shots and the fourth side won by 12 shots over Pakenham. Side 1, Division 2: Skip Neil 'Buddy' Drummond and his rink played well again but went down by two shots, while skip Frank Byrne and his rink also lost by two shots but the other two rinks could not fire up against Hampton Park on a tricky green and in the end Cranbourne lost by 30 shots. Any faint hope of playing finals has now been extinguished for this year with one game remaining in the season. Cranbourne 68 (0 points) lost to Hampton Park 98. Side 2, Division 3: A 21 shot win for the team this week against Noble Park and skip Steve Hickson and his crew of Bill Bradbury, Brian Biasci and Stan Myers got the job done again with a win by 11 shots. Cranbourne 89 (16 points) defeated Noble Park 68. Side 3, Division 5: Everyone is mad about Harry! Well that would be Harry Van Soest and his crew of John Kent, David Brown and Scott De Piazza who won by a massive 30 shots and won the honour of being crowned best rink of the day. Cranbourne 113 (18 points) defeated Vermont South 47. Side 4, Division 7: Skip Rob Sorensen was back this week and his deputy Bill Sherriff and posse Brian Turton and Gwen Scott all had a great day winning by 21 shots and once again, justice prevailed in old Cranbourne town. Cranbourne 93 (13 points) defeated Pakenham 81.

Side 5, six-a-side: Skip Mick Feeley and his rink of Brian Hall and Al Agullana just got home by one-shot but that wasn't enough to win against Beaumaris. Cranbourne 29 (2 points) lost to Beaumaris 42. Mid-week bowls Cranbourne Ladies Division 1: Cranbourne seem to be limping into finals contention with another loss, this time to bottom side Doncaster by nine shots despite two rinks winning and won rink losing. This week they play Glen Waverley at home in a must win final round match for the season. Winning assures Cranbourne a birth in the finals and having beaten every opposition team in the competition who knows how far they can go. But for now, they need to get back on the track and start winning again. Cranbourne Ladies 57 (4 points) lost to Doncaster 66. Results: Cranbourne 2, Division 2 open 74 (14 points) defeated Burden Park 60. Cranbourne 3, Division 3 open 60 (2 points) lost to Chelsea 44.
