TOORADIN HISTORY POSTED FOR SALE By Narelle Coulter IN its heyday last century the Tooradin North Post Office was a vital part of the farming community that surrounded it. People popped by the post office to collect their mail, make a phone call on the party line, buy a stamp or collect their daily newspaper. Today remnants of that history are still visible in the sprawling family home that sold this month for $1,175,000 at 70 Langtree Road, Tooradin. Keith Murphy, who still owns part of the original property, has fond memories of growing up there in the 1950s. Langtree Road sits between Tooradin Station Road and Muddy Gates Lane. His parents, Keith Senior and Gladys Murphy, bought the then 100 acre property in 1954. Keith Senior ran the property as a dairy farm and Gladys looked after the post office, which was located in a small room accessed from an alcove at the front of the house. In the 1950s the weatherboard farmhouse was typical of the era with three bedrooms, a kitchen with slow combustion stove and separate lounge room. The toilet was “down the backyard“ where copperhead snakes often lurked. Bees had built hives in the walls of the old house and Keith remembers honey dripping down the walls. The house was called Bundalhon back then, though Keith is unsure of the origin of the name. He recalls being told it meant ’happy home’. As a boy it was Keith’s job to collect the

mail from the nearby train station. “We had to collect the mail at the station daily. Originally when we sent the mail out we had to tie string around the bag and put wax around it and stamp it with a seal,“ he said. “The papers used to come by train too and I’d have to collect those as well.“ Keith remembers getting scolded by his father one day because he sold one of the newspapers to a passenger on a train parked temporarily at Tooradin North. The bloke had called out to him through the train window and offered him “two bob“ for a newspaper. “I got home and was very proud of myself but dad was very angry because I had sold someone’s paper so he had to go and get another one.“ People without home telephones would use the public phone attached to a wall on the outside of the building. Keith remembers the post office call sign - two shorts, a long and a short. “I got in trouble for picking up the phone and listening to converstations.“ In 1963, Gladys Murphy fell ill and could no longer run the post office. Her duties were assumed by a Mrs Carlisle who lived at the station master’s house. Keith Senior sold the property in 1965 for 7500 pounds to Greek brothers Con and George Nelios. They brothers were fishmongers who lived in Gardenvale and used the Tooradin property on weekends. “I remember they held an engagement party there once for their son and it lasted three days. You could hear the music for miles,“ said Keith.

70 Langtree Lane, Tooradin. The Nelios brothers sold the land under separate titles in the 1980s, and in 1988 Keith bought back the house in which he grew up. He renovated it and let it out, but sold it again after a few years because of problems with tenants. “Anyone else would have pulled it down,

but because I grew up there I wanted to preserve it,“ he explained. Keith is elated that the vendors incorporated the old house into their extenisve renovations. “I’m so pleased to see that it has been renovated and its history is still there.“ ● 12412688-RC10-19
