MacKillop College History – in the Making Harmony Week – Diversity Parade Sometimes it seems the successes we stand to measure are most visible in the change they represent. At the end of 2018, our Principal Mr Rory Kennedy spoke of MacKillop College culture with a pride he encourages all within our community to share. It is this culture we wish to invite you to celebrate with us ĥ ›‘— ”‡ƒ† –Š‹• ƒ”–‹…Ž‡ ƒ„‘—– –Š‡ Ƥ”•– ‹˜‡”•‹–› ƒ”ƒ†‡ ƒ– ƒ… ‹ŽŽ‘’ ‘ŽŽ‡‰‡Ǥ In 2018, MacKillop College Student Representative Council worked diligently and with great care, thought and consideration, to stand for what our students and our College believes in. In our current political climate, we often forget the unseen struggles of exclusion and alienation, we don’t think of the stories hidden behind policies and language barriers. At MacKillop College the culture we, and all those within our community, work to cultivate and maintain is one of inclusion, acceptance and grace. This is who you have marched for today. The people who shape and mould MacKillop, the people who are the foundations of the school. A place where the diversity of each student is celebrated, no matter gender, ethnicity or interest. Walking with us today, you empowered every student at the school. You reminded us that every student has a voice, a purpose, a place. That here between the classrooms, hallways and walkways, no person is left to struggle alone. It is our struggles that bring us to stand together, undivided and united in the face of adversity. This is what you showed us today. That together there is harmony and peace. St Monica’s College, Epping ST MONICA’S College, Epping was established in 1964 as a girls’ school. This served a specific purpose at that time. In the 1970’s the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, local clergy and parishioners saw a real need for boys’ Catholic Education thus in 1978 St Monica’s College, Epping proudly became coeducational. Our school has flourished ever since. In all of our local Primary schools (Government and Catholic) coeducation is offered. In all tertiary institutions (universities and TAFES etc.) coeducation is the only way education is provided. I argue that all education is delivered at its best through coeducation. Why? There are many reasons why I contend that the coeducation choice Monican parents have made for their children is the right one. Being together throughout the day, feelings of comradeship and friendships develop in a natural way between girls and boys. This mutual feeling and uplifting experiences are inherently valuable to the fully rounded person. These friendships emerge through shared experiences in classrooms, from participating in shared activities outside the formal curriculum, and through shared membership in clubs and teams. Coeducation assists significantly in breaking down sexist attitudes in both genders. Boys and girls learn in a natural classroom environment, not sheltered away from each other, and in this normal way appropriate respect ought to develop between the genders. In the coeducational classroom, both female and male perspectives are explored, thus greater understanding between the sexes, more consideration of points of view, and increased development of individuals both intellectually and socially. Truly, coeducation reflects 100% the diversity of society. Coeducation, in other words, IS the real world. Accordingly, students are better prepared to enter the workforce, more capable of coping in post-secondary educational institutions, and more confident to involve themselves in discussions and activities with the opposite sex. Of course they are because they have mixed and grown up with the opposite sex from kindergarten years.

Coeducation at its Best” I believe that girls are more confident to express their views on all manner of things in their daily life in a coeducational College and exactly the same applies to boys. Students feel comfortable in whom they are and the chances are many to develop healthy and positive attitudes and self-image. Let us hope that this in turn reduces harassment and bullying. Coeducation is popular throughout the world and a chief reason for this is that it allows for greater socialisation, wider diversity of experiences and fewer gender stereotypes for young people. This can only be healthy, good, and most desirable. It could be stated that collaboration between the sexes, not separation, fosters equality. In a coeducational setting, students are exposed to both male and female role models, students learn to lead the opposite sex in all types of situations, and finding a group of friends to match up with is easier. There are myths associated with coeducation just as there are with single sex education. These should all be dispelled as we come down to the one, most critical reality – humans live in a coeducational world and consequently enjoying the coeducation experience in school years should form a holistic person, confident and wise. Catholic education: Schooling for life satisfaction and success ACADEMIC achievement, accessibility, affordability, and strong and safe school communities are drawing more Melbourne families to Catholic education. ‘You feel something special the moment you walk into a Catholic school’, Allison Nally, a teacher at Emmaus College, Vermont South, says. Krystine Hocking, Principal at Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School, Sunbury, just opening its doors this year, has an idea what that ‘something special’ might be. ‘Catholic schools are communities of compassion where we’re called to care for those in need and shape the world for a common good’, she says. ‘We recognise that each person is different and we commit to respect each other and empower all our students to achieve their full potential. It’s about them making sense of their world.’ Catholic schools encourage students to learn through inquiry, and teachers are encouraged to support students in their search for understanding and meaning. We want our students to explore the big questions in life with a clear vision of what is good about themselves, their immediate surroundings and the wider world in which they live.
6
Catholic Education
This emphasis on the whole student is endorsed by academic research, with a Curtin University study showing Catholic school graduates enjoy higher levels of life satisfaction. New and expanding communities see Catholic schools as essential elements of their neighbourhood, with well over 210,000 students almost one in four Victorian school children enjoying a Catholic education in one of nearly 500 schools statewide, supported by some 28,000 staff. The figures show the strength of the system and why the proportion of Victorian students in Catholic schools is higher than in any other state. Affordability backed by continued academic achievement are key reasons for the appeal of a Catholic education. University of Melbourne research has found that Catholic schools add an average of six points to tertiary admission ranks, or ATAR scores, at the crucial career-defining end of a student’s school journey. A major part of this success comes from the fact that when Catholic school teachers walk into class, they see individual students, not a blur of faces. ‘There’s a tremendous amount of pressure for our children to be the best at all times’, Krystine
says. ‘This has an impact on their wellbeing and we’re seeing high levels of anxiety. We should want our children to be the best for the world and not the best in the world, and our challenge is to instil that hope.’ Catholic schools work hard to discover what matters to each student and identify what they want from life so they can fulfil their full potential, realise their gifts, and build self-esteem and resilience. They not only let students come to understand who they are, what they want and how to get there. They nurture a love of learning and a desire for knowledge that become an essential part of this process of growth. The Curtin University research shows this approach pays real-world dividends. It has found that Australians who attended Catholic schools enjoy a wage premium of around 10 per cent. But academic achievement is only one part of a Catholic education. The Curtin University study also singles out for special mention the social capital available to those from Catholic schools. A Catholic education equips students with the tools to shape a great understanding of themselves and their world, with graduates empowered to take the lead with action toward a better, fairer world. Safe pathways for life A long-running research project by the influential Melbourne Institute has found that the families of three out of four Catholic secondary school students expect their children will go on to undertake university studies. And in an important indication of the character of our schools, the same study shows that Catholic school students are far less likely to be bullied than those attending government schools. ‘Catholic schools are places where families have a sense of hope based on the experience of God’s love and care’, Krystine says. The wellbeing programs in our schools live out the gospel value of faith and a shared belief that we should all aspire to a common good. As part of this, Catholic schools not only aim to create zero-bullying environments based on a genuine concern for others, but strive to be leaders in child safety.
This has led Catholic Education Melbourne to work with Australian Catholic University to create the Graduate Certificate in Safeguarding Children and Young People, the only tertiary course of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and just one of a handful globally. Family engagement Catholic schools are places where life and faith and family are celebrated. That, as Stella Maris School, Beaumaris, Principal Robert Horwood explains, involves building deep connections with parents as partners in learning – and helping them assist their children with their school journey. ‘With more parents working and the pressures of being time-poor, many families have less time to be together and to enjoy and discuss everyday life’, Robert says. ‘These factors can lead to a sense of uncertainty and anxiousness for parents, who then unknowingly pass feelings of anxiety and lack of resilience on to their children. ‘Sometimes, real or implied pressure to be perfect, compete, achieve success in everything they do and never being allowed to fail sets our learners up to be anxious teenagers and adults.’ This is where Catholic schools’ emphasis on communicating with parents and providing support can make a real difference and smooth student paths to learning. ‘Parental contribution to learning cannot be outsourced’, Robert says. ‘Stronger partnerships with the school lead to better outcomes and opportunities for our learners. Children need time to be children and to worry less about issues.’ The Catholic way of understanding people and the world provides students with a sense of hope and purpose in their lives. It adds to their resilience and capacity to make a difference, particularly in the face of all the challenges of our diverse, complex and ever-changing modern world. We welcome all families who seek a Catholic education for their child, and believe our school difference sets students up for lifelong success and fulfilment. Or, as Krystine says, ‘We can never underestimate the impact we have on the future generations we teach. Mother Teresa once said: “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things”.’ Catholic Education

Assumption College AS noted in its mission statement, Assumption College Kilmore strives to be “an inclusive and transformative Marist community”, inspiring its members “to shape the future with audacity and hope”. The College wants all members of its community (families, students and staff) to feel welcomed and nourished. This learning community is enriched by the presence of its boarders, either weekday or full-time, many of whom hail from families on the land. Boarders enjoy modern accommodation and five-day boarding is particularly popular with senior students who live within an hour’s drive of Kilmore. They have access to one-on-one tutoring by teachers during weeknight study and the camaraderie that develops often leads to life-long friendships. Academic boarding scholarships are offered to those entering Years 10 and 11. Assumption’s rural and urban families create a unique social environment that calls for a courageous discernment of evolving times, and an agility of response that ensures our students learn to know, to be competent, to live together

and, most especially, to grow into the best version of themselves. All aspects of college life are directed at helping this to happen in light of Gospel values and the five Marist characteristics: presence, simplicity, love of work, in the way of Mary and family spirit. The curriculum is designed to equip students with the core knowledge and skills to prepare them to be good citizens and to instil in them a life-long love of learning so they can cope in a vastly changing world. At Years 7 and 8 the focus is on subjects that offer breadth and balance, where students study all areas of the Victorian Curriculum, and are exposed to an array of digital and design technologies. They begin to make elective choices in Years 9 and 10 where the focus is on pathways and choice. Students can select up to 16 semester-based electives over these years, providing a highly personalised learning experience and promoting student ownership of their own education. In the senior years, up to 30 VCE studies are offered, as well as numerous VET and VCAL courses and school-based apprenticeships.

Federation of Catholic Regional College THE Federation of Catholic Regional Colleges (CRC) is a collaboration of five Catholic coeducational secondary colleges, located in the rapidly expanding North Western suburbs of Melbourne. Each College within the Federation is partially autonomous with its own administrative structures. As a complex, the federation is governed by the Catholic Regional Colleges Board and its students are identified in the community by a single uniform and College crest. The name of each college is a combination of its campus location prefixed with ’Catholic Regional College’. The first of the colleges to open was the St Albans campus in 1978, followed closely by the opening of a second campus in Melton West two years later. In 1982, a senior college in Sydenham was opened to cater for the senior secondary education of students from the Melton and St Albans campuses. In the same year an additional Years 7-10 college opened in North Keilor. As of 2007, the latest addition to the CRC Federation is a college in Caroline Springs. As a Catholic community we recognise the presence of God who challenges us to embrace
Our goal is to work in partnership with parents to develop young men and women. Gospel values. We continually look for opportunities to express our Faith through practical action with regard to Social Justice. Students are expected to be involved in and participate fully in a selection of co-curricular activities. These range from sporting teams and associated training to our Social Justice Group, debating and chess clubs, Student Leadership Group, choir and an environment group. Our goal is to work in partnership with parents to develop young men and women who are loving, open to growth, committed to their faith and to social justice, and who are religiously and intellectually competent. When our graduates demonstrate these characteristics, practicing them in their daily lives by contributing to our Nation.

Social justice initiatives are flourishing through our fundraising efforts and immersion programs to the Philippines and East Timor. Students willingly volunteer on a number of initiatives and we are very proud of our young people who, in their service to others, enrich both their own lives and those around them. We aim to build minds that will thrive in our increasingly interconnected world. Flexible technology and a diverse curriculum allow each individual student to gain the tools necessary for them to succeed. Mirroring the functional interdependence of the world today, JPC is working towards cross-curricular projects. For example, a drone might be built in Product Design, programmed as part of Digital Technologies and flown as part of Media/Art assignments. JPC aims to give students the knowledge, skills and attributes they will need to flourish in life, learning and work. Catholic education: open to all ACADEMIC achievement, affordability and strong and safe school communities all point to a flourishing future for Catholic education in Victoria. Catholic Education Melbourne Executive Director Stephen Elder says the greatest compliment he has ever received was overhearing one parent tell another “If you want your child to be truly happy, then send them to a Catholic school”. “Catholic education stems from a sense of service to the community,” Mr Elder says. “We have always worked to make our schools open to as many parents who want a quality, values-based education for their children as possible - and always will. “We’re not driven by educational fads. Instead our focus is on developing independent learners and encouraging personal development; creating happy, well-adjusted students with the knowledge and life skills - plus a sense of purpose - needed in our ever more complicated world.” A pathway for life
Growing numbers of students and a steady stream of new schools point to the popularity of Catholic education. This year over 210,000 students - close to one in four Victorian school children - will enjoy a Catholic education in one of nearly 500 schools state-wide. And above the mere numbers, academic results and a steady stream of independent research underlines the difference a Catholic education makes. Catholic schools across Melbourne excel in

literacy and numeracy - the crucial building blocks of learning - returning results well above the state average in NAPLAN tests. The 2017 VCE median study score - the best indicator of the typical level of VCE achievement in a school - show stronger outcomes for Melbourne Catholic schools, with results that now stand some 10 per cent higher than the equivalent results for Victorian government schools. Using the same measure, the proportion of high achievers in Melbourne Catholic schools is more than three times larger than the equivalent figure for government schools. University of Melbourne research on the “value add” performance of non-government education has found that Catholic schools add an average of six points to tertiary admission ranks, or ATAR scores, at the career defining end of a student’s school journey. A major Australian Bureau of Statistics survey has found that three out of four Catholic secondary school students will go on to university. And a Curtin University study shows how a Catholic education pays real-world dividends, with Australians who attended Catholic schools enjoying a wage premium of more than 10 per cent. At the same time, the Curtin University research shows Catholic school graduates enjoy greater levels of happiness and life satisfaction. A major part of this academic and personal success comes from the fact that when Catholic teachers walk into class they see individual students. Teaching and learning programs are based around diversity and dignity and designed to engage students at a social and emotional level. “The thing I like about working in the Catholic school environment is that we genuinely put the student’s wellbeing at the heart of everything we do,” Liam Buckley, a teacher St John’s Regional College, Dandenong, explains. “School for our students is not just about the learning of content, but the development of the person as a whole.”

Mater Christi College SIX REASONS WHY ALL-GIRLS SCHOOLS ARE DIFFERENT Choosing a secondary school is one of the big decisions faced by parents. There are many factors to consider and visitors to Mater Christi College often ask about the advantages of an allgirls school. “We believe that girls learn differently to boys and that they are motivated and respond in different ways. Our student-centred culture celebrates those differences and thrives on the ‘can do’ energy of girls,” said Principal, Mary FitzGerald. The Alliance of Girls Schools (Australasia) has summarised some of the key research findings about single-sex education. Here are 6 reasons why an all-girls school is different: 1. Academic advantages: Girls in girls’ schools achieve significantly stronger academic results than any other group in Australia. Girls are free to pursue academic excellence and each achievement is celebrated. 2. Role models and leadership: All the leadership roles in girls’ schools are filled by girls. Younger students see these female leaders as role models and learn that girls can lead in any field. 3. Counteracting negative influences: Girls can work through the challenges of adolescence without fear of embarrassment or harassment.
24
Catholic Education
4. A tailored curriculum: Teachers tailor their practice and curriculum for girls. In a collaborative and supportive environment, girls are free to participate in class without the teacher’s attention being dominated by boys. 5. Countless opportunities: Girls at girls' schools enjoy not only equal opportunity but every opportunity. There is no gender stereotyping with subject selection. Girls are able and encouraged to explore a career or future in any area. 6. Global citizens: Girls’ schools prepare students to be citizens of the world, using rapidly developing technology and forming connections with girls in other countries. There is an emphasis on social justice and community as girls are encouraged to make connections with others beyond the classroom. Mater Christi College is easily accessible by dedicated buses and public transport links to most Eastern and South Eastern suburbs and only 5 minutes’ walk from Belgrave Station. A visit to the College will enable your family to witness a vibrant and inclusive community where girls feel safe and build supportive lifelong friendships. In the current political and social arena, MacKillop College is proud to stand as a miniature representation of our society and all the possibilities therein. We are responsive to the needs of our students and our community, striving continuously to improve the educational experiences and opportunities presented. MacKillop College is about its students. About giving each individual a voice, and the tools and understanding to become a part of a global community that lives to contribute for a better way of life. We are a co-educational secondary Catholic College named after St Mary MacKillop, co-founder of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and, just as the Sisters of St Joseph were committed to education being inclusive of those who could not afford it, MacKillop College is committed to cultural inclusivity and a love of diversity. It is in service to this that we continue to develop our International Program, reaching into Europe and Asia with international trips, homestay opportunities and immersion programs. It is also in service to this that we bring those cultures closer to home for those who are not able to travel internationally. In combination with Languages Week, Harmony Week and Music Week, diversity is celebrated. Students are able to explore French, Italian and Japanese, while eating food from all over the world.

We also continuously hope to expand the way in which we share and experience the voices within our College community by exploring personal stories in more depth. Whether through art, prose, sport, style, debating, AnimĂŠ, chess, community projects or pastoral care, MacKillop facilitates and encourages students to discover what might give them the rounded education and sense of dignity they need. In this past year, we’ve seen students gain success in everything from skeet shooting, to international basketball, to dance, music and more. We’ve had the privilege to award students for overcoming immense personal challenges as well as performing exceptionally academically. We’ve been able to support our students while they stood up for the environment, equity and each other. Mary MacKillop spoke of the smallness of who we are – reminding us we are but travellers among billions of travellers in a very large world. Just so, MacKillop College is an introduction. There’s a reason the school motto is ‘Celebrating all life; Challenging all people; Dreaming the new day.’ We live and learn for a brighter, more educated and inclusive future. Grossek’s View Grossek’s view ON REFLECTION “WITH (NAPLAN) scores improving in many testing areas our students are breaking away from the pack and leading the nation across multiple learning areas. This is further proof that the sustained investment from the Labor Government is having an impact. We’ve invested heavily to make Victoria the Education State and these results show it’s paying off. A special thanks should go to our wonderful principals, teachers and support staff who work hard each and every day to give our kids every opportunity to a great education.” – Victorian Minister for Education, James Merlino (28 August 2018) Barry locked his car, a white Toyota sedan he had bought from a friend several years ago. Like him, the car had seen better years, yet it still did its job relatively well. Now in his early sixties, Barry was about to retire. After fifteen years as a public school principal in Victoria he had had enough. What, with his blood pressure a little too high for comfort and an investigation pending on his school’s amazing transformation in NAPLAN results, Barry saw his time as better spent travelling Australia, seeing the sights before his sight gave out completely, not to mention his nerves. Today though, was for catching up with old colleagues, fellow school principals. Mates from college days. There was Madeline, always top of the class at university. She was smart. Some would say sharp. Whatever, Madeline led a great school, another public school in Victoria. Entrepreneurial, almost to a fault, her school led the way in innovation. In a State that encouraged parental choice of public schools for their children, Madeline’s school was always at capacity. Her school’s NAPLAN results never set the world on fire, but just about everything else did. That intrigued Barry, and had for years. John and Felicity would also be there today, 34

the annual get together at their favourite pub at end of term 3, just before the AFL Grand Final. They all loved their Aussie Rules and with the grand final just days away, there would be plenty of light-hearted banter to deflect discussion from their school leadership responsibilities. They would need that, thought Barry as he sauntered slowly to lounge bar. What with his Department inquiry about to commence, he certainly didn’t want too much attention focused on him this afternoon. Besides which, John was a provocateur, a stirrer of the highest calibre and Barry had no doubt that John would have him in his sights. All the more so given John’s school led the pack when it came to NAPLAN results. Luckily for John, insofar as Barry was concerned, John’s outrageous sense of humour was always a wonderful antidote to the negativity generated at these gatherings – a negativity spawned of frustration with bureaucracy and workload issues. As Barry entered the lounge, comfortable and well appointed by contemporary standards, he wondered if the lighting was faulty. Everything seemed a little hazy to him. “Barry, you old codger, we’re over here.” Glancing to his right, Barry saw them. “Ah, yes, so you are, John. How could I ever forget that voice?” “Well, I’m sure it’s not for want of trying!” replied John, his round and ruddy face beaming with delight at seeing his old mate again. Pleasantries exchanged, the familiar outpouring of gripes and grievances about their work meandered through their conversation, peppered only lightly with references to the forthcoming AFL Grand Final. Collingwood and the West Coast Eagles were not their favourite teams. It was Felicity who broke the ice eventually. Felicity was the least extroverted of the group. Our Lady of Sion College AT Our Lady of Sion College, we celebrate the gift of life through our teaching and learning. Embracing the strong tradition of the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion, students are encouraged to realise their full potential through experiences that will enrich, challenge and reward them. At the heart of Our Lady of Sion College is community. We recognise the diverse spiritual, intellectual, social-emotional, and physical needs of our students and the development of these needs within an environment where each student is known and named, valued and nurtured, encouraged and supported through the personal relationships we foster. Our student leadership program supports young women who want to stand up for other young women. Their voices tell us about the issues to which they want to make a difference. Our interfaith and social justice programs encourage our students to look beyond the school gates and reflect on how they can be a voice for those without one.

One benefit of sending your daughter to an allgirls school is the lack of stigma about girls participating in Maths and Science subjects; indeed, our Denise O’Hara Science Academy is a unique extension program that challenges our girls to consider aviation, robotics, conservation and a wide range of other STEM options as real possibilities for their futures. In 2018, 21 of our students from Years 7 to 12 took up the opportunity to travel to NASA, Houston, to attend Space School, a learning experience which has captured their imaginations and offered them insight into real-world applications of Science and Engineering beyond their classrooms. We aim to foster in our students a love for learning, an inquiring and discerning mind, the pursuit of personal excellence, a compassionate concern for others and a strong sense of hope that they can become positive agents of change in their world. Ultimately, our learning environment and the varied opportunities we provide aim to support each student’s journey towards becoming the young person God created her to be. PRESENTATION COLLEGE WINDSOR Founded in 1873
Why a Girls’ School? PARENTS often face conflicting advice when deciding whether to send their child to a singlesex or coeducational school. There are more single-sex schools for girls than for boys in each of the three Australian educational sectors: government, Catholic and independent. As a consequence, more boys than girls are enrolled in some coeducational schools. So as a parent, how do you decide which school is best for your child? And, importantly, what do you actually want out of a school? For example, is the focus on achieving good grades, or about making sure your child fits in and feels accepted? There is no straightforward answer, but research has revealed there are some key things to consider when choosing a school which might help determine where to send your child. Single-sex schools Most of Australia’s single-sex schools are found in the fee-paying non-government sector. This means that financially secure parents have a wider choice of schools open to them. Of the small number of single-sex schools in the government sector, many are academically selective. Research suggests http://www.aare.edu.au/ datapublications/2007/for07148.pdf that girls who attend single-sex schools are more confident about themselves as learners in subjects such as mathematics and physics than in coeducational schools. In the absence of boys, the girls also feel less constrained in engaging in classroom discussions. For boys attending single-sex or coeducational schools, their confidence levels in physics and mathematics are found to be equally high, and they boisterously engage in classroom discourse. Girls’ schools provide a fantastic opportunity to educate, inspire and nurture the girls of today, who will be the leaders of tomorrow. In a single sex school, every girl is able to be heard. The curriculum is tailored to the needs of girls, which provides the opportunity to develop and excel. In a coeducational environment, girls can be “drowned out by the boys”, whereas in single-sex schools can captain the debating team, choose to study physics or be part of a cricket team. Highlighted below are some of the many

Role models and leadership Every single leadership role in the school is filled by girls, including the SRC representatives, class captains, sports captains, school captains. The girls learn about various influential women and the roles that they have played in History. Academic advantages Research has consistently shown that girls perform better academically in all girls environments. Without the burden of subject stereotyping, girls are free to pursue academic excellence. A tailored curriculum Girls learn differently from boys. In most girls school the teachers receive special training so that they are able to tailor their classes and curriculum to the needs of the students. This means that the students are more likely to be engaged during class and therefore are able to achieve to their potential. References: http://theconversation.com/singlesex-vs-coeducational-schools

Sacred Heart Girls’ College
12391662-CG11-19
SACRED Heart Girls’ College was established by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM) in 1957. When Euphrasie Barbier formed The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions Congregation in Lyon, France in 1861, she took the name Mother Mary of the Heart of Jesus. It is from her name and her special devotion to the Sacred Heart, that our College is named. The Founding Sisters brought with them the wonderful traditions of their Congregation. While the Sisters no longer administer the College, their spirit and influence remain in both the academic and faith life of the school. The international character of the RNDMs provides the College with many wonderful links with schools and missions around the world. The richly multicultural community of Sacred Heart, with approximately 1000 students and 100 specialist staff, is one where Gospel values are not only taught but also lived. Sacred Heart successfully integrates academic excellence with
personal development and Christian leadership within the Catholic tradition. It provides a happy, supportive and disciplined setting conducive to the achievement of individual success in learning and the fostering of confident, responsible young women. Our learning and teaching program seeks to equip students with knowledge, skills and attributes required to take their rightful place in society as the leaders of the future. Our faithbased values ensure that they approach the challenges before them with a sense of optimism and hope. Students are encouraged to lead with love, compassion and justice. Our co-curricular program includes many opportunities for students to build resilience, teamwork, leadership and public speaking skills. This is fostered through the many and varied activities in the faith, social justice, sporting and cultural arenas.

Salesian College Chadstone BEST-SELLING author and award winning parenting educator, Class of 1973 past student Michael Grose is visibly progressive in thinking and practical in action. Some 20 years post taking a risk on a research opportunity and stepping onto the parenting stage, he today prepares the final chapter in his soon to be 11th best-selling book. In a refreshingly straight shooting interview, Michael shares how being open to change and learning is the key to not only remaining relevant, but excelling professionally and developmentally. “(Today) technology is a massive issue; it’s a game changer. It’s an issue I never had to deal with. We had to keep our kids safe with Stranger Danger; now it’s how to keep kids safe online as well as offline. In some ways there’s two worlds that kids have to navigate. From a parent and professional perspective, the biggest topics back (when my children were born) were very much about behaviour. It was ‘How do I get my kids to behave? How do I get them to behave well? I can’t get them to do what I want’. I spent most of the 90’s writing and running seminars about that. Now it’s completely different. It’s a shift through to the notion of mental health of ‘How do I make my kid resilient?’ Mental health is such a big issue now, which wasn’t so much back then.” With ‘lawn mower parenting’ (the new ‘helicopter parenting’) being a popular topic in today’s childrearing space, Michael believes it is important to balance the natural desire to improve the next generation without falling into this trap. “I always say, (if you have two kids) raise them as if you have six. So that means step back a bit and try not to know everything that is going on. Give them a bit of space. Kids need to take on some responsibility… (and have) the opportunity to drive the conversation.” In Michael’s latest book, Spoonfed Generation, he speaks about the value of raising independent, resourceful kids, and delivers insight into his own child-rearing strategies and how parenting is a journey that requires commitment and considered effort across all ages and stages of the life cycle. “The first (lesson) would be resisting the temptation to do everything for your children. To teach, rather than do. It could be as simple as
48

taking a few more minutes when they are young, to show them how to tie up their laces, always erring on the side of coach or a teacher rather than a doer for your kids. And that’s a constant conversation. To create a strong sense of family (which we were quite passionate about), we made sure we spent some one-on-one time with kids. I still do this as an adult. I’ve got a daughter who is 30 who lives just down the road and I pop in to her place quite often for lunch, just with her and her two little ones and that’s just something we have always done. We created family rituals, such as making sure our kids turned up to family meal time. Even when things got really busy, with homework etc., you still had to drop that and come to the table and have a sit down and talk (the TV was always off). We made sure there was also a bit of down time as well - and we still engineer that to a degree. I know these things worked and are embedded, because I can now see my own kids putting those practices into place, each of them in their own way.” To read the full interview in the Summer 2018 edition of our Griffin magazine, visit salesian.vic.edu.au/news/publications/

One Community, Three Villages THE African proverb says “It takes a village to raise a child.” At Santa Maria College, our vision of One Community, Three Villages embodies our commitment to name and know each student so that she can learn. Our Villages are framed within the contemporary learning and teaching model of the International Baccalaureate: Middle Years Program. The aim of our Three Villages model, Year 7 and 8, Year 9 and 10, Year 11 and 12, is to know each student and her story - know how she learns, what helps her flourish as a person and learner and how we as a College work in partnership with our families. Led by three Village Leaders (Faith, Learning and Wellbeing), these Leaders work with the students for two years in collaboration with the Leaders of Learning and teachers from each faculty. Together the staff become the guardians of each student with the intention to journey with each student over 6 years of secondary education. This holistic approach to nurturing each child occurs within our dynamic 21st century world, and within a Catholic community that actively embraces and promotes scriptural values of compassion, forgiveness, peace and hope. In 2019, the College will open the Year 7 and 8 Village Learning Centre to symbolise in bricks and mortar, the Village concept. Designed by Law
52
Catholic Education
Architects, the new Learning Centre has been developed to further enhance connection and belonging within the student community so that confidence, growth and success in learning becomes embedded and a natural part of the experience. The design includes a new two-level Year 7 and Year 8 Centre by rethinking and extending an existing building. The Village Learning centre opens up to create larger spaces for collaborative learning and student inquiry. Each level includes an amphitheatre and breakout spaces to promote teamwork, collaboration and enhance social engagement. Natural light will wash through the Centre with expansive windows, internal glass and skylight. A central staircase offers physical and symbolic connection between the levels and again reinforces a Village concept of learning. The Village’s curved front facade is fully glazed with an eye catching decorative metal screen in sage green, blue and copper tones to control light and offer a street appeal of creativity, colour and movement. The strength, grace and openness of the building design reflects the core of what Girls education is at Santa Maria. One of rigour, one of confidence, one of inquiry, one of connection and one of contemplation and compassion.

Catholic education: open to all ACADEMIC results, affordability and strong enrolments all show the strength of Catholic education in Victoria and the depths of its connections with the community. ‘St Thomas is more than a school for us. It’s a friend’, says mother of two Laura, whose sons attend St Thomas Aquinas School, Norlane. ‘They’ve got a passion for kids and a passion for helping. My kids can’t get there quick enough in the morning.’ Sarah, whose daughter previously attended a government school, says: ‘You get the feeling in the Catholic system that your child is a real individual, not just a name on a roll, and that you’re part of a far broader community, a real family’. Catholic education is committed to providing quality, accessible, faith and values-based schooling to all those who want it. It’s clear parents appreciate the choice. Two new Catholic primary schools have opened in the greater Melbourne region this year, following five that took their first students in 2018.

In 2020 we hope to see the opening of a new secondary school, Iona College, and expect this to be followed by as many as two more secondary schools and nine new primaries as we head towards the middle of the decade. Catholic schools are seen as more than places of education, but as vital community hubs – centres that provide a sense of certainty and purpose and enduring values. At the same time, they offer a partnership with parents. Catholic education provides choice, allowing parents to find schools that best meet their children’s needs: an already significant consideration that is growing even more important with the state government’s new policy of enforcing residency requirements outside school zones. Catholic schools aren’t too big – or too small. That means they have the proper resources and skilled staff to prepare their pupils for the challenges of our twenty-first century world, while still seeing students as individuals and being there for families to ensure good communication between school and home.
St Bede’s College
ENROL NOW!
2019 Open Events St Bede’s College is a Catholic boys secondary school founded within the Lasallian tradition. St John Baptist de La Salle began a number of schools after seeing a need to educate boys and young men who were the most vulnerable in their society. He understood that education was the path to freedom and responsibility. From such beginnings a large network of Lasallian schools formed, now educating more than one million students worldwide. Our motto is Per Vias Rectas (By Right Paths). It is important that young men have a strong set of values that underpin the way they live. We live those values by respecting and honouring our heritage while looking with imagination to the future. We are proud of our Lasallian heritage. It gives our community a distinct and well-articulated view of education, allowing young men to feel connected, empowered and able to make a clear difference in the world. We are an inclusive community where students have the right to be safe, valued, challenged and respected by all. We also believe that such respect carries mutual responsibility for others as part of our College family. Strong pastoral care links between the student, family and school are a hallmark of the College. St Bede’s College thrives on the concept of community where we are brothers and sisters to one another.

St Columba’s College AT St Columba’s College, we offer a wide range of educational and co-curricular opportunities for our students in contemporary learning facilities. These offerings aim to have an individual focus for all students, allowing them to choose the right pathway for their future. Therefore, we are excited to announce that in 2019, the College will be breaking ground on the next phase of our Master Plan. The ongoing Master Plan for our facilities has seen the implementation of world-class contemporary classrooms, with the seamless integration of technology and modern learning tools in collaborative working spaces. The Slater Building, utilised by our junior year levels, will be one of the facilities expanded as part of the next phase of the Master Plan. This expansion will not only extend the learning spaces available to our students, but will also offer a number of new curriculum opportunities. The extension to the Slater Building will add three new innovative spaces to support the delivery of Food Technology as part of our curriculum programs in 2020. The introduction of
Food Technology will open our students to a range of VCE and post-graduate opportunities, continuing the College’s support of educational endeavour for all our students. In addition to the Food Technology spaces, the next phase of the Master Plan will also see the introduction of additional classroom spaces and a rooftop outdoor learning area (to the Slater Building). The College will also be adding to our already extensive sports facilities, with the construction of a new outdoor multi-use sports court and upgrade to our indoor gym spaces. These improvements will assist in the expansion of our co-curricular sports program and continue to enhance student learning in the physical education and health domains. We look forward to continuing to see substantial growth in our facilities and educational offerings from 2019 at St Columba’s College, ensuring that students experience contemporary and diverse learning opportunities throughout their journey at the College.

Thomas Carr College THOMAS Carr College is a Catholic co-education Year 7-12 College located in the west of Melbourne at Tarneit. Our College is an innovative educational community, providing the latest technology, buildings and facilities. In 2018, Thomas Carr College introduced its accelerated learning program. The Magis Program at Thomas Carr College is designed to cater for the needs of the academically gifted or talented student who demonstrate above average abilities, high levels of task commitment and greater creativity. Deeply-rooted within the wisdom and tradition of Ignatian spirituality, the Latin word magis means the greater, the excellent, the best. Through specialist curriculum, well-practiced teaching expertise, and a developed culture of high expectations, students will be stimulated, challenged and motivated towards even higher levels of achievement. Each year, one class of Year 7 students will be selected to embark on this six-year program, which is designed to enhance intellectual potential and development. Accelerated courses involve a combination of a faster paced curriculum and more complex and abstract material which encourages students to further develop their capacity for higher level thinking. As the Magis Program aligns with the current

curriculum from Year 7 to 12, students are encouraged to participate in a range of advanced academic activities focusing on literacy and numeracy while being extended in the various electives offered at the College. Gifted or talented students experience a sense of wellbeing, positive development and engagement when provided with supportive and challenging learning environments and opportunities that are responsive to their individual strengths and interests. A key feature of the Magis Program is to allow students the possibility to complete Advanced Standing Studies in partnership with tertiary institutions After a successful first year, the Magis Program has continued in 2019, with a new Year 7 class and the previous Year 7 class continuing on into Year 8. Aside from the Magis Program, Thomas Carr College offers an engaging curriculum which equips our students with the knowledge, skills and attributes for the future. Continued from page 34 the others, she was the best placed to raise the prickly issues and sore points between them. “How are you feeling Barry?” she asked at the precise moment that John was launching into a self-acknowledgement of his school’s outstanding NAPLAN results this year. “What do you mean?” replied Barry in an offhanded sort of way, guarded nonetheless. Sensing Barry’s defensiveness, deflected, “Oh, retirement looming.”
Felicity
“That, well I’m looking forward to it,” replied Barry, his gaze fixed upwards, at nothing in particular, and making eye contact with no one. The elephant in the room, thought Madeline. What next? She didn’t have to wait long. “Do you know, I always thought I was a better person till now,” began Barry. “NAPLAN got me.” An awkward silence followed, after which Barry cleared his throat and mumbled something about leaving his friends to enjoy the rest of their get together. With that, he put a fifty dollar note on the table to cover the cost of his drinks and more, shook John’s hand, hugged Felicity and Madeline and left, just like that. “I feel so sorry for him” ventured Madeline.” “Why?” shot back John. “He was a fool to tamper with NAPLAN results.” “That’s not proven yet,” chimed in Felicity. “Be that as it may, it’s still not a good look for our profession.” Madeline thought about that as she drove home later. High stakes testing – which is what NAPLAN is, has changed the educational landscape irrevocably. Well at 64
Catholic Education
least for the time being. Controversial and polarizing it always will be. Her thoughts drifted back to a time which seemed eons ago but in reality was barely three weeks. Madeline had just completed her school review, an exhaustive process that entailed many, many hours for many people at her school in the preceding months and would extend to the end of the year with completion of her school’s next 4-year Strategic Plan. What bothered her most was not the inclusion of NAPLAN results in the review, but the lopsided weighting of importance that the Department of Education and Training (DET) placed on NAPLAN results in the assessment of her school’s performance. NAPLAN results in literacy and numeracy were given triple the weighting in importance of everything else. Lost in her thoughts, Madeline almost missed the turn off to her home. Braking quickly, she managed to slow down just in time to take the turn safely. It rankled with her that no measures of all curriculum achievements of her students other than in English and Mathematics seemed to count for that much. Certainly not in the tabloid papers that ran prominent pieces identifying the ‘top’ schools and the ‘failing’ schools based simply on NAPLAN results. As she pulled up in her driveway, Madeline managed a wry smile. After all, important as literacy and numeracy are, the many parents of those children who attended her school, did so because of the calibre and breadth of curriculum choice and wellbeing programs, not just because of NAPLAN.

Celebrating life and hope CATHOLIC education’s faith-based values have much to offer students, as they are challenged to take action for a better world and a more just society. Catholic schools are places where life and faith are celebrated. Director of Catholic Identity, Paul Sharkey, says: ‘We have named our vision of education “Horizons of Hope” because we believe that one of the greatest gifts that can be given to a young person is the gift of hope. ‘Students need to feel a sense of belonging, purpose and connectedness in their lives’, Paul continues, ‘particularly in the face of the many challenges of our diverse, complex and everchanging modern world. ‘Our students are encouraged to embrace a view of themselves and the world that provides them with a sense of hope and purpose in their lives. It adds to their resilience and capacity to make a difference.’ Denise Hussey, Principal of St Michael’s School in North Melbourne says, ‘The child is at the centre of all that we do. We don’t just focus on their cognitive needs, but also their spiritual,

physical, social and emotional development. It’s all about the relationships we develop with all those who are part of our community.’ Catholic education seeks to equip students with the tools to shape a greater understanding of themselves and their world, and to take action and leadership positions in the establishment of a better society. Melbourne’s Catholic schools welcome all families who seek a Catholic education for their child, confident that what we are offering not only sets our students on a path toward lifelong success and fulfilment, but gives them the skills and confidence to inspire others to build a better world. Elizabeth Hanney, Principal of Ave Maria College in Aberfeldie, lives this every day. ‘Catholic educators know that students are at the heart of all our endeavours’, she says. ‘Catholic schools are places of hope and generosity, of forgiveness and newness, of excellence and inspiration.’

Welcoming school comunities CATHOLIC Education is thriving in the Sandhurst Diocese; our vibrant educational communities strive to be places of faith, of academic achievement and spiritual formation, exposing students to the importance of social justice and global issues and the beauty of The Arts. When you choose a Catholic School for your child, you become part of the wider community, connected to Parish, other regional Catholic schools and the local community. Students are encouraged from an early age to have a presence in their local community, learning the value of being part of a community that extends beyond their school and home experience. Catholic schools encourage parents and caregivers to become involved in their child’s learning and engaged in school life. Working together, schools and families create an effective learning environment and a climate of mutual respect. Sandhurst schools offer families a strong curriculum with a full range of subjects and education pathways for all students, a focus on literacy and numeracy is paramount to the success of students in Sandhurst schools and contributes to building a culture of school

improvement and performance. The Catholic Education Sandhurst theme for 2019 is, “Listen with the ear of your heart’ inviting our school communities to listen deeply, the kind of listening needed to hear what God is asking of us. This means that we allow ourselves to be moved and influenced by the needs of the world we see and hear around us. The director of Catholic Education, Mr Paul Desmond said it is an awesome responsibility to make a positive difference in the lives of our young. “I call upon each of us to see ourselves as crucial parts of a team which strives to make a difference that will enhance the possibilities for our young people and to enhance their knowledge of and relationship with God,” he said. Catholic Education Sandhurst spans central and North-Eastern Victoria, providing Catholic Education to more than 20,000 students in 56 educational settings across the Diocese, including 42 primary, 9 secondary, 3 Foundation – Year 12 and 3 specialist learning settings. The Diocese extends from Kerang in the state’s North West, to Corryong in the North East and includes the major regional areas of Bendigo, Echuca, Shepparton, Wangaratta and Wodonga as well as many vibrant smaller communities.

Holy Saviour Parish Primary School I AM very proud and privileged to be the new Principal of Holy Saviour Parish Primary School, Vermont South. I have had a long association with Holy Saviour having taught here for six and a half years before leaving in 2016 to further my career in education as Deputy Principal. I have been involved in Catholic Education since the age of five and as I completed my final year of Catholic Education at Parade College, Bundoora, I could see my future was in education. My family life, from a very early age, instilled in me a great sense of belonging to our faith community. I believe strongly in the role Catholic Education has to play in the life of families and the community. After studying at Australian Catholic University, I was identified as a leader in my third year of teaching, being appointed Religious Education Leader, a role which I have held and thoroughly enjoyed for 10 of my 15 years in Catholic Education. I am excited to be returning to Holy Saviour and working with families to further enrich the faith life of the community and enabling others to grow and exceed their expectations.
I would like to welcome all parents into a long and happy relationship with Holy Saviour Primary School and Parish Community.
My vision as Principal is quite detailed, but there are two aspects that I believe are key to leading Holy Saviour in its journey. The first, and most important aspect, is the children. Everything we do, every decision that is made must address one key question: How does this affect the children? Our primary purpose is to keep the children at the centre of every decision that is made. What is going to be best for the children? The second aspect is parent partnerships. You are the primary educators of your children. By the time your children commence primary school they have already had so many life experiences within your families. The education of each and every child must be seen as a partnership between families and the school & parish community. I am proud of the academic standards achieved by our students and the well-rounded children who leave our community approaching their secondary schooling with established academic skills, self-confidence and a pride in their selfdevelopment. I would like to welcome all parents into a long and happy relationship with Holy Saviour Primary School and Parish Community. I look forward to the journey we are all about to embark on in supporting all students to flourish spiritually, socially, emotionally and academically. I warmly invite you to arrange an appointment to visit us and see the school in action. Steve Evans Principal

Mother of God School (MOGS) remains a small school where the individual and the community are equally valued. With our focus on learning and teaching, student wellbeing, the Arts and a vibrant kitchen garden program, we work to ensure that all students can experience success. Like all schools, we are challenged with providing a comprehensive learning program that will enable all of our young people to fully participate in society in the 21st century. We know we do a very good job at that. Ours is a small school with big expectations. We are a school community where everyone is known by name. We highly value the learning partnership between school and home and actively work to engage our families in a shared conversation about learning. You are invited to come and see, we are sure you will not be disappointed.

Don't stop the bedtime story AT the start of this school year many children across Australia entered schooling life for the first time. This marks a major change for these fledgling students and their families, but there's something parents shouldn't change, says a leading expert on literacy and reading. Sue Nichols is Associate Professor of Literacy Education at the University of South Australia. She says that all too often, the start of school marks the end of bedtime stories for children, depriving them of a fun activity that fosters valuable learning outcomes. "For many children," says Associate Professor Nichols, "starting school is the beginning of learning to read. Teachers will be helping them learn about letter sounds and how these are combined in words. Most children will be practising their new reading skills using special learn-to-read books, sometimes called ‘readers’. Parents will be encouraged to listen to their children read regularly. This is important." "However, as children begin to read independently, many parents stop reading to their children. There are good reasons why the bedtime story should continue well into the early school years." "First, learn-to-read books have limited vocabulary. This is helpful for children practising
74
Catholic Education
their reading skills. But they also need to be continually adding new words, and more advanced words, to their mental dictionaries. Fiction and non-fiction books have a wider range of words so hearing parents read will keep children’s vocabularies expanding." "Second, learn-to-read books have simple stories, often with few characters. Even movies, television shows and computer games have more complicated story-lines and children can cope with these. Hearing interesting stories where there are complications and twists gives children’s brains a work-out and helps them build comprehension skills which will be useful in their later reading." "Third, learning to read is hard and children can get tired and frustrated. Listening to a story or sharing a non-fiction book is a nice break and keeps up both children’s and parents’ enthusiasm. It shows children that reading is not just work but fun and informative." For more information, please contact Associate Professor Sue Nichols on 0410 441 037 or at Sue. Nichols@unisa.edu.au

Celebrating Language diversity AS A boy, Professor Joe Lo Bianco AM felt embarrassed hearing his parents speak Italian in public when growing up in the north-east Victorian town of Myrtleford. ‘I didn’t know any English until I went to school,’ he says. ‘Like many, many migrant children I was embarrassed by my parents’ language and didn’t want them to speak Italian in public, I was so desperate to belong and fit in.’ Now, as an adult, Professor Lo Bianco is spearheading a global push for a multilingual world as the lead author of the Salzburg Statement. He is also Professor of Language and Literacy Education at the University of Melbourne’s Melbourne Graduate School of Education. Celebrating language diversity Professor Lo Bianco says the Salzburg Statement for a Multilingual World is a call for individuals, corporations, institutions and governments around the world to celebrate and promote language diversity. The statement was released to coincide with International Mother Language Day on 21 February, observed each year to promote linguistic and cultural diversity, and multilingualism. Professor Lo Bianco celebrated the release of the statement with Department of Education and Training Secretary Gill Callister at a recent reception. Both discussed the importance of children learning their mother language and all children learning a second language in the context of an increasingly globalised, multilingual world. Busting language myths Professor Lo Bianco says parents often mistakenly believe speaking their first language to their children will hinder their ability to learn English – when in fact the opposite is true.
don’t know very well. ‘Studies show that this tends to mean children receive very fractured and fragmented information, which is not good for the child’s language development.’ Teacher power Professor Lo Bianco says teachers could play a crucial role in encouraging children and their parents to continue speaking their mother language. ‘Teachers can foster a positive attitude by drawing attention to the fact that other languages exist and are spoken by children in the classroom and that these children speak these languages to their parents at home,’ he says. ‘They should inform themselves of what the research shows about learning multiple languages. ‘If children develop two languages to a reasonably high level, they gain a lot of benefits for their overall educational development.’ He says teachers can also encourage parents to continue to speak to their children in their mother language. ‘It won’t hinder them picking up English because English is something they will be immersed in at school,’ he says. Languages in the Education State The Department has launched posters to celebrate the importance of mother languages and encourage parents to speak to their children in the language they know best. In Victoria, all schools are required to provide instruction in eight different learning areas, one of which is languages.
‘It’s actually much better for children to have a rich knowledge base in their first language,’ he says.
Speaking two or more languages will make your child a better thinker and communicator, giving them advantages at school and in life.
‘If parents are learning English themselves and speaking to their children in English, then they are talking to their children in a language they

St Clare’s Primary School and St Patrick’s Primary School
Our aim is that St Patrick’s School and St Clare’s School will provide an atmosphere that gives each child a sense of self worth and provides encouragement in a secure environment. Both schools form part of St Patrick’s Parish together with St Clare’s ELC Each child, through a belief in themselves, in others and in a loving God is encouraged to strive for excellence and to have hope for the future. Every young person must also accept responsibility for their own actions and behavior. We believe that children learn best when they are happy – when the learning is relevant to their lives and to their stage of development and readiness. They learn when there are good relationships among those involved in the learning process. This will obviously include parents as the primary educators of their children, as well as teachers. Both Schools have a dedicated staff, both teaching and ancillary and are part of a supportive, Christian community. We warmly invite prospective parents to meet with us and to view the excellent educational and recreational facilities provided at both schools. Additionally, at the Majestic Drive Officer site there is a state of the art Early Learning Centre which offers four year old and three year old Kinder.

St. Kevin’s Primary School Ormond AS the Principal of St Kevin’s Catholic Primary School Ormond it is my great privilege to represent all those, both past and present, who make up the community of this school. My appointment to the position of Principal commenced this year and I believe, that with my many years’ experience in school leadership and my passion for the wellbeing of each member of the community I am in an excellent position to lead St Kevin’s in a period of growth and renewal in the coming years. I firmly believe in providing genuine opportunities for students to have a voice in regard to their learning and their school. It is my hope that this will enable each of them to develop strong leadership skills which will give them the confidence and ability to accept the many opportunities and challenges which will be presented to them in secondary school and beyond. St Kevin’s Primary School prides itself on creating a safe and stimulating learning environment for all its students. The incredibly dedicated, professional and highly skilled staff ensure that our excellent academic and social programs provide each child with learning opportunities which enable them to develop into independent and confident learners. St Kevin’s is a school which inspires success, creates possibilities and honours the dignity of each child every day. At the heart of this is a community where all are known by name and are

Inspiring success, creating opportunities, valuing the dignity of all. given a voice to ensure a strong partnership between school and home. The learning at St Kevin’s takes place in modern, air-conditioned, flexible learning spaces with access to diverse learning technologies and excellent resources. Our specialist programs, which include Physical Education, Visual Arts, Italian and Sustainability provide further opportunities for our children to explore, achieve and develop their academic, personal and social skills. We firmly believe that every child at St Kevin’s is catered for as an individual. Our excellent student teacher ratios enable learning to be tailored to each child so that they are able to reach their highest potential. We endeavour to nurture a partnership with parents, who are the first and most important educators of our children, and continually look for opportunities to strengthen this important relationship. My goal, this year is to create the best possible learning environment for each of our children and to ensure that St Kevin’s is constantly promoted in and around our local community so that our school can continue to be an integral part of the educational landscape of this area. It is a very exciting time in the St Kevin’s story as we look to the future with great hope and excitement and welcome new families to become part of our very special community. Enrolment enquiries can be made through the enrolment link http://www.skormond.catholic. edu.au/page/194/Enrolment on our website, www.skormond.catholic.edu.au or by contacting the office by phone or email to organise an individual school tour. School improvemets for Sale diocese SCHOOLS take seriously their responsibility for achieving real gains in a range of outcomes for their students. Schools look always to improve the quality of their teaching and learning and the supports that surround them. Indeed, the Catholic school is called to offer the best learning experience that it is able to do in the best circumstances that it is able to provide. This commitment is evidenced in a public way through the efforts schools make to keep parents in particular, and the wider community in general, informed about school successes, activities and priorities for improvement. Schools have well established means of examining themselves in a positive, self-critical way, seeking to improve the quality of its life across all its dimensions. Our schools are also acutely aware of their responsibility to their community. Each school is accountable to its

parents, the first educators of their children, to the parish and to the Bishop from whom its mandate derives. That accountability requires honest and comprehensive processes of self-appraisal and clear reporting to those with a right to know. Schools have well established means of reporting information about the performance of the school to their community. The Catholic school is fully aware, too, of its accountability to Governments, both State and Federal. There are obligations and expectations that must be met, which include administering the NAPLAN tests and for reporting on school performance information to all parents. The school keeps these obligations always in mind and ensures that they are always met. For further information please refer to: http://www2.ceosale.catholic.edu.au
