What a week. The Festival of Surfing is in full swing and the waves haven't been too shabby either. If you were lucky enough, like I was, to be among the thousands who flocked to main beach on Sunday to see the dog surfing it was a treat to behold. You've got to love the way dogs throw themselves into everything. Also on Sunday locals said goodbye to summer with a festival on the river. People all over the shire rolled up their sleeves to pick up rubbish in the Clean up Australia event and disappointingly continue each year to collect huge hauls of rubbish. Though where would we be without them. Women and more than a few men are learning from each other how to create a better world at WINDO's International Women's Week Festival. And now it's autumn. ● - Margaret Maccol

LIVE TINY, MAKE IT COUNT! BY MARGARET MACCOLL With the draft Noosa Plan out for public consultation it was timely to further the conversation on tiny houses and where they can be sited at the Tiny Houses and Eco Villages event held at The J Theatre last weekend. Just six months after a tiny house event was held at Doonan which attracted about 600 people, Polkadot Community Inc. Association organised the expanded event at The J Theatre with two days of seminars, talks and displays. Co-organiser Jimmy Hirst said people were loving the tiny house concept and becoming more serious about trying them. He said there was growing interest from people wanting to determine their options of tiny house living. You Tube star of Living Big in a Tiny House Bryce Langston spoke to a packed audience of his experience living in tiny houses in New Zealand, Australia and the US and meeting other people doing the same thing. Five years ago he was an unemployed actor with no chance of ever owning a place in his hometown of Auckland where the average house costs $900,000, when he discovered tiny houses and started a You Tube channel. "There are so many people struggling with housing ownership. People like me in their mid-30s are a generation who rent," he said. Bryce said living in a simple dwelling enabled him to live bigger in the world without the pressure of rent, mortgage and consumerism. He said while government argued the

legislation on the siting of tiny houses on land with so many people living on the streets civil disobedience was at the core of the movement. Since building a tiny home on wheels he has met people from all walks of life and all ages living tiny. And there were many reasons for it, he said. Economic affordability, lessening your footprint on the environment and a better lifestyle.
"It means extra money, more holidays, you can build to your own needs," he said. Unexpected outcomes he has discovered are the benefits to seasonal workers who travel for their work and the resilience of tiny houses to natural disasters such as earthquakes and, being mobile, to bushfire. For more on tiny houses Jimmy Hirst will be guest speaker at Noosa Parks Assocation's Friday Forum on 8 March from 10.30am at Wallace Drive, Noosaville. ●
POLICE RECOVER ALLEGEDLY STOLEN JET SKI BY ABBEY CANNAN Noosa police last week charged a 37-yearold Tewantin man after investigations into a string of recent offences reported across the Noosa River and its tributaries. Charges include Enter and Commit an Indictable Offence on a Vessel, Unlawful Use of a Vessel (jet ski), fuel theft and other theft from vessels moored along the river, drug offences and property suspected stolen offences. During the Investigations police searched a Tewantin residence and located property suspected of being stolen from the vessel Catalina. Police also retrieved a Kawasaki jet ski valued at $20,000 from mangroves that they
A $2.5 million Federal Government grant delivered on Monday from Wide Bay MP Llew O'Brien to the Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club toward the construction of its new clubhouse has provided an enormous boost to the volunteer organisation that has been fundraising for the $5.8 million project. Club lifesaving deputy president Craig Law said the familybased club relied heavily on the support of its 210 members and locals who visit the restaurant to cover its financial running costs of about $450,000 a year. With the club closed for eight months during construction its regular income will incur a large cut. "Without the funding it would have taken a very long time to pay off the loan," he said. "It's taken a lot of weight off of members." Club patron John Madill said the club culture and life skills acquired at the club was the reason his family has been involved since his father Tom Madill helped build the original clubhouse in 1981 and why his grandchildren participate as nippers. Mr O'Brien said the club had been saving lives since 1981 and brought tourists to the area. "They know they have a safe place to swim, it enhances life on the coast and the nippers are supported through the supporters club," he said. "These new premises will mean more members, which means stronger support for the Club's essential lifesaving services, ensuring public safety, boosting tourism and providing a valued community hub." Construction began this week on the new clubhouse that will include a function room for weddings and conferences and community groups. ●

He was released on strict bail conditions which include him not being permitted on a powered or unpowered vessel along the Noosa River or its tributaries. ●

COVER STORY
GREAT LEADERS DON’T NEED A TITLE BY ABBEY CANNAN hen Australia's first female High Commissioner to South Africa, Ann Harrap, graduated from her Queensland University Arts/Law degrees, she originally planned on becoming a journalist. That was until she took a year off to travel in South Africa, where she had a chance encounter with an Australian diplomat. After getting her head around the roles of embassies and high commissions, Ann decided to change career paths. That fast decision was the starting point of Ann's highly successful diplomatic career that would see her represent Australia's interests in a number of different countries. She had many incredible experiences including meeting the likes of Nelson Mandela, Prince Charles and John Travolta, dancing some 'terrible 80s moves' with the then US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, and discussing her favourite albums with Sir Richard Branson. Ann said she first applied for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 1991 along with over 4000 others and was lucky enough to be selected in the graduate intake of 25 people. "As fate would have it, my first overseas posting was to South Africa and I ended up living in the house that I'd stayed in a few years earlier as a backpacker," she said. "I served in the department for 20 years working in Canberra, including in parliament house as an adviser to the then Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, and overseas. My overseas postings included the UK, Iraq and PNG where I was the deputy High Commissioner." As High Commissioner to South Africa

Ann Harrap with NoosaCare CEO Megan D'Elton. and six other African countries, Ann presented her credentials to two Kings and four Presidents, but she said she was most inspired by the resilience of local people, particularly women. "Some of the living conditions in remote parts of Africa are almost too bleak to describe and yet there were these incredibly committed and professional people -

community leaders, representatives of NGOs - helping to improve lives," she said. After completing her posting to South Africa, Ann decided to retire from DFAT and make the lifestyle move to the Sunshine Coast establishing her own independent consultancy. "Through my consultancy I provide leadership and diplomacy training. I've
done a lot of work with African and PNG students, particularly those on scholarships funded by the Australian Government. Sometimes the work is slightly out of left field - I went to Fiji as part of the Australian delegation to report on the recent elections - but my favourite work is facilitating conversations in workplaces about leadership and communication," she said. noosatoday.com.au
Ann Harrap during an Election Monitor. Growing up in Brisbane, Ann would holiday in Noosa with her family, so the region holds some special memories for her. "One year my husband and I were holidaying in Noosa from Port Moresby and I had a broken foot. We were staying on Hastings Street and he went out one morning to buy the paper. He came back with a brochure for a house at Sunrise Beach and we bought it that afternoon. People say you should never buy property when on holidays and it did take us about eight years to finally move into our place - but it was one of the best decisions we've ever made," she said. With International Women's Day this week, Ann was the perfect person to be giving an inspirational speech to women of all ages at The Zonta Club of Noosa's International Women's Day breakfast on Friday 8 March. "I've always been really impressed with the work that Zonta does, particularly here in our local community. But they also have a much broader international focus. I've seen first-hand the resilience of women in difficult environments so I'm delighted to support a non-government organisation that recognises the value of empowering women, including through education," she said. During Ann's speech she will be sharing some of the many leadership lessons that she has learnt over the years. "In particular, the message that you don't need a title - like CEO or High Commissioner - to be a good leader. It's not the labels that define us but rather the choices we make and the actions we take. No one calls me 'Your Excellency' any more but I would like to think that I am still leading a contribution in the Noosa community, including through my work with NoosaCare and Zonta," Ann said. "The other message is about not being disheartened if you don't succeed straightaway or if things take longer to change than you would like. If I think about the poor representation of women at senior levels in both the public and private sector, I do get dispirited about the slow pace of change. I then remind myself how much things have moved on in the world of foreign affairs. Today we have a female Foreign Minister, a female head of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and nearly 40 percent of our Embassies and High Commissions overseas are led by women. "So, the message is don't stop being an Ambassador for women - keep up the pressure until we see the equality, safety, recognition and respect that we deserve." noosatoday.com.au
Ann Harrap with Prince Charles. Throughout her career of working in male-dominated environments, Ann learnt the best way to gain confidence is through preparation. "You have so much more confidence if you are prepared and know what you're doing. I would love to say that I have lots of natural talent but that wouldn't be quite right. I was determined to have a successful career and I worked really hard to achieve it. Confidence comes with doing a good job," she said. Ann continues to be a leader contributing to the community, as she is currently Vice-President of the Board of Noosacare. "I've been very lucky in my career and had some wonderful opportunities, including as a result of the generosity of others. I've managed large teams, worked with people from all walks of life, delivered on large projects and implemented budgets. I thought some of those skills would be helpful for a dynamic organisation like NoosaCare dealing with the increasing demand for aged care services in our region. I would also like to think that my work delivering aid programs in developing countries taught me something about care, encouragement and compassion - all of which are an intrinsic part of the NoosaCare culture. NoosaCare provides an incredible service at both Carramar and Kabara, helping people to age with dignity and choice, and we are well-recognised for our innovative approach to caring for people living with dementia. I only play a very small part in NoosaCare's work alongside incredible staff and volunteers but it's my way of continuing to make a contribution and repaying the generosity of others that I have experienced over the years," Ann said.

IT’S THE CLEAN UP THAT NEVER ENDS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Crab pots, drug paraphernalia, camping equipment and lots and lots of plastic were among the items collected on Sunday when crews took part in Noosa's Clean up Australia event. Kayak Noosa's Tracey Heran said about a dozen kayaks joined in the clean up. She said the water was looking very clear and king tides had pushed rubbish further up the river bank than usual. Tracey said they often cleaned up nearby islands after kids camped overnight and left their rubbish behind. Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) river rangers worried they'd be picked up by the police while they ferried back a number of home made bongs in their

rubbish collection. Eskies, camping gear and plastic also featured in their load. The rangers who collect rubbish each week from the Noosa River said the amount
of trash never diminishes. Clean up Australia events were held across the shire including Peregian Beach where more than 100 nippers and their
families collected piles of waste. In addition to plenty of micro-plastics there were a couple of unusual finds with an office chair and a drone.
TOP SPOT FOR NPA WITH FEE-FREE EXTENSION BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Parks Association (NPA) has been given a five-year extension on its fee-free management lease of Noosa Heads National Park visitor information centre and day-use area and the State Government is in the process of investing $530,000 in upgrades and maintenance. A Department of Environment and Science (DES) spokesperson said the NPA's commercial activity agreement (CAA) was due to expire in January but had been extended for an additional five years (until January 2024) as per the provisions of
the CAA and the Nature Conservation (Administration) Regulations 2017. The CAA enables NPA to sell merchandise from the information centre and food from the cafe located at its enviable position at the gateway to the popular national park. In exchange NPA is required to deliver visitor services and "maintain a range of visitor facilities in the park on behalf of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS)". "The NPA's operation of the centre has provided a consistent service and benefits to QPWS, reducing operational costs for
QPWS, enhancing visitor information services in the area," the spokesperson said. "While the NPA pays no ongoing fees on the lease, the NPA contributes revenue from the centre into a trust fund to be used for acquiring and protecting environmentally significant lands in the Noosa/Cooloola area." QPWS continues to maintain the centre and as part of a Noosa National Park redevelopment is conducting maintenance work on the information centre and upgrading the day-use area with new barbecues, picnic tables, landscaping, turf and walkways, due for completion in June.

RAINBOWS SHINE OVER NOOSA The Rainbow River Festival was a three-day success, according to organiser Alex Baker. Melony's Bar Hop on Friday night proved so popular the party numbers grew as more and more people along the Gympie Terrace decided to join in the fun. The Mardi Gras Party on Saturday night at Villa Noosa was a sell out event and Sunday's family friendly river parade and picnic was a relaxed way to end the weekend. ● Jan Campbell and Alex Baker

HAVE YOUR SAY ON LAKE Residents have only until 5pm on Monday 11 March to have their say on the Lake Macdonald Dam Improvement Program. The upgrading of the dam will involve building a new spillway and reconstructing the embankments aimed at better protecting the dam against earthquakes and extreme floods. The project is scheduled for 2020 with lowering of the lake set down for March to avoid the wet season, as well as aquatic fauna breeding seasons in and downstream of the lake with construction to begin in mid-2020, subject to approvals. Lake Macdonald will remain open to recreation in 2019.In December 2017, the dam upgrade was declared a 'coordinated project' under the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971. A draft IAR has been prepared which contains feedback obtained from stakeholders and the community between August and September 2018. It is available for viewing and to make submissions at www.dsdmip.qld.gov.au/ sixmilecreek and in hard copy at the Cooroy Library and Noosaville Library. ●

For more than 20 years a dedicated core membership of the Cooroy-Noosa Genealogical and Historical Research Group worked tirelessly to accumulate the funds to build their Heritage Centre at 17 Emerald St, Cooroy, which was officially opened in May 2017 by Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington. In recognition of this magnificent achievement the Royal Historical Society of Queensland president Stephen Sheaffe will present the group with a Centenary Award on Saturday 9 March at 1pm. The RHSQ Medal is awarded to those who, in the opinion of the Council of the Society, have contributed exceptionally to the history and heritage of Queensland. Group secretary Julie Kinloch said, "to be awarded this Centenary Medal is a great honour for us and a recognition of the hard work and dedication of all members of the group in creating a building that recognises and curates family history together with the history of the Cooroy and Noosa Shire community". The centre comprises an extensive reference library, up to date computers and a spacious area for research and meetings. For more information visit www. genealogy-noosa.org.au ● noosatoday.com.au

DOG SURFERS DRAW THE CROWDS BY MARGARET MACCOLL They came in all shapes and sizes, some performed acrobatics, and others just clung on but all the dogs surfing on Sunday were stars at the stand out event sponsored by VetShop Australia and held as part of the Noosa Festival of Surfing. About five thousand people filled Noosa's Main Beach edging further and further into the water as they jostled for viewing spots to watch the dogs and their human surfers and the winner on the day, Banjo. There were a couple of first time surfers including Bella the cocker spaniel and Missy the French bulldog. Bella who normally joins owner Pauley on his stand up paddle board in the river found the waves a bit daunting and bailed early while Missy stuck it out despite a few wipe-outs. Border collies Indie and Anna Jones were back again for their seventh year and so too was last year's winner Spike with owner Rob Lorenzon. A long time surfer Rob said when Spike kept jumping on other people's surfboards he knew he had to get him a surfboard of his own. Rob and Spike make the journey from Melbourne annually to the fabulous event that just celebrates dogs. â—?

CELEBRATING WOMEN ON THEIR INTERNATIONAL DAY Through its International Women's Week Festival Noosa's WINDO Inc has been demonstrating how women are developing pathways through the medium of the arts to influence, inspire and effect positive change in the community. WINDO founder Jeanette Dal Santo said through collaborations the growing organisation is encouraging the promotion of women's achievements and addressing key issues affecting women's equality. Noosa MP Sandy Bolton said statistics show across communities there are increases in domestic violence, alcoholism and drug addiction. "We can actually make a change by women all working together," she said. The week long festival kicked off at The J Theatre on Monday with a launch at the art exhibition of Michele Rudder titled Le Passage de la Femme whose paintings touch on topics such as domestic violence but through its colour and vibrance cause 14 NOOSA TODAY

CUT THE SURCHARGE As I receive my rates online I am wondering why I get a surcharge when paying by credit card. For the few measly dollars the council gets from this surely I’m saving them money by not issuing a paper bill, postage, employees’ time etc. Not to mention that I’m being eco-friendly. COMMONSENSE APPROACH The decision to euthanise the dingoes that attacked a nine-year-old boy on Fraser Island last week was the only common-sense option open to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. However, this incident should never have happened. Calls by some groups to not destroy any dingoes on Fraser Island have put dingo sentimentality ahead of public safety. Rangers should have been allowed to euthanise this dingo after it was identified as the one that attacked an 11-year-old boy last month. This vicious attack could have ended in tragedy. It’s time for the department to review its policy on how and when to deal with aggressive dingoes. The Fraser Island Association is not suggesting a cull, but believes the removal of an aggressive individual would not adversely affect the viability of the island’s dingo population. Valuable public education about dingo and people behaviour, which is available to visitors on guided tours, must reach the free and independent visitors as well. David Anderson, Fraser Island Association president
TIT FOR TAT Who remembers the times at school when you were choosing your teams to play sport? Or your mum dishing out Easter eggs for you and your siblings. How often were there disputes because one team or one sibling had more than the other? This was before the games had started or you had taken your first bite of an egg. Well its now progressed to federal politics, with the government and opposition competing for who has the biggest quota of women on their team. Not about policy but a competition to beat a quota. Whatever that is? Just like a bunch of school teenagers boasting. “We have more than you so we must be representing the country better.“ Peta Credlin once described how they placed women behind the PM for Question Time so when on TV it made them look good. They should be on the front bench as
Sandi van der Ster snapped this beautiful sky at Tea Tree Bay in Noosa Heads National Park. It’s time for a BIG change in both parties and not as favours to make the party look good. It would have all been fixed if Julie Bishop had been chosen as PM. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach
NATURE IN CONTROL What I don’t get with the whole black/white issue of climate change is how we just ‘accept’ what we read/hear, not what we sense. Surely many have asked what caused the ice age or the great flood? Take it more recently - what happened to the black hole in the ozone layer or the 1980s tidal wave coming? No-one told us if the hole repaired itself and that tidal wave never drenched us, yet landowners back then sold beach frontage properties from the fear generated. Strange that. We never seem to ask the most pertinent questions - sheeples just read, hear and believe. I’m not a pro or anti climate anything, honestly I think Nature has us more in control than what man wants to admit, yet man appears to believe he has it ‘under control.’ Nothing could be further from the truth. Ever try picnicking through a cyclone? If statistics and media state that this is the hottest summer since 1902 ... what caused it then? Possibly cow farts, but not car emissions. Ask the good old farmer (not the struggling Toorak farmers), and they will say it’s

cyclic and man’s hands have encouraged it to extremes. When the typhoon hit Aceh, all the wildlife previously headed for the hills. Nature gets it, man doesn’t. Prepare to batten down the hatches, then pray your house will be the one still standing after it’s wreaked its path through your region, just like it does in USA. How does one house survive when every single thing in its vicinity is decimated? A lot goes beyond what man thinks he knows. Those who listen to Nature, heed it. Jen Oakley, Noosa
PARKING ETIQUETTE It always irks me when oversized utes and four wheel drives park next to my car. Their oversized nature increases the potential for dinging or denting my car when their car doors open. It seems the older the beast of the car, the less likely the occupants of the vehicle are to care if their doors swing out onto another vehicle. If I’m around when a vehicle pulls in beside mine, I sit, wait and eyeball the driver and the other occupants as they vacate the car and make my presence known. I had a Mexican standoff today, when the driver of a massive ute parked beside my car; returned my glare; and just sat in his car like a petulant child. He put his window down, indicating that he was in for the long haul. I gave up waiting, and as I walked away from my car, I turned to see him gingerly opening his car door and vacating his vehicle in a sideways, crab-like manner as he avoided touching my car. He was a big bloke, so it was rather entertaining to watch. Sadly, I can’t always be there to monitor the comings and goings, and I do have dings on both front doors from careless, inconsiderate drivers who obviously don’t give a damn about other people’s property. I know I sound rather pedantic and pathetic as it is just a car, and it is very much a first world problem in the big scheme of things, but it is important to me. And for what it is worth, I would never open my door onto another vehicle (as many obviously do). Brigid Muir, Cooroy
NOT A HAPPY JANET This lady is not for turning on the global warming debate. Nor will I be deterred by those who reject an alternative view from their own. To those who wrote to this paper
reminding us that 75 per cent of scientists agree that global warming is caused by mans CO2 emissions, I can only say that I’m glad that I have retained independence of thought and prepared to question popular opinion. By conducting extensive secondary research, I formed my own opinion to contribute to this important debate on climate change, questioning what comes first; the chicken or the egg? Man-made CO2 emissions are NOT the cause of global warming. Changes in the Earth’s orbital geometry are the fundamental causes of climate change over three cyclical periods of 100,000, 42,000 and 21,000 years of the Earth’s orbit around the sun (Milankovitch). These cycles drive the tilt of the Earth’s axis of the poles toward the sun. The sun is the cause of global warming. Hayes, Imbrie and Shackleton published in Science, Vol.194 (1976) were able to substantiate these climatic cycles, taking several hundred seabed and ice core samples recording at least 450,000 years of climate variations. Ref. (CLIMAP group USA). These core samples formed three peak cycles, proving Milankovitch’s hypothesis. CO2 was considerably more extensive during ice melts or global warming. Such extensive research is rarely afforded in modern times and therefore must, in my opinion, be given your serious consideration. This study also cautions that some anthropogenic [man] effects cannot be ignored in future computations. Hence, we must conclude that man-made greenhouse emissions, during a period of natural global warming has a compounding warming effect on earth, but does not caused change. With record breaking and extreme temperatures not experienced in the last 100 years, Earth is currently in a glacial warming period (Milankovitch cycles) plus the Maunder Minimum (MM) sunspot activity with its own 11-year cycles when solar UV output is more variable than earlier assumed. To better understand the variables of same, NASA suggests more research is needed. Cloud and water vapour around the Earth increase during global warming increasing natural occurring greenhouse emissions, before we take into account man-made emissions. The accumulation of all the above mentioned occurrences need to be understood before we can add man-made greenhouse emissions into the equation. Only when we gain both understanding and acceptance of these facts, are we in a position to take responsible action. Yes, let us all think globally and act locally. However, if India or China’s cities are spewing man made CO2 into their atmosphere, they need to own it locally and not expect Australia to willingly contribute further to our declining manufacturing industry or halt responsible mining; (which would exclude Adani and cotton growers who have proven themselves irresponsible.) But let’s not punish us all for the greedy acts of a few unscrupulous money grabbing conglomerates. Some scientists predict a mini ice phase to begin around 2040-’50 such as experienced in the late 17th century due to low sun spot activity (MM) when the Thames and Baltic Sea froze over. If 75 per cent of scientists are proven wrong, what will you tell your unemployed grand children if you back the manmade CO2 theory? The economic ruination of Australia, with high unemployment and high cost of living may be the result. We need a federal clean efficient integrated energy policy. We do not need politically driven fear tactics. Not a happy Janet. Janet Gibson, Noosaville noosatoday.com.au

BY JOHN GREEN Many people think orchids are extremely hard to grow and so expensive. Both cases are wrong, as there are orchids, which can be grown easily in all situations, and as for the price they are cheaper than bunches of flowers. There two main types of orchids, the ones that grow on trees (ephytes) and the ones that grows in the ground (Terrestrials). To grow them successfully you need to know the difference as they need different growing media and different water requirements. One of my favourite orchids is the genus Bulbophyllum. This is very diverse group of orchids with over 2000 species spread mainly through the rainforest areas of South East Asia, India, New Guinea and Australia. One of my favourites is Bulbophyllum rothschildianum (pictured), which is endemic to India. I find this orchid is easy to grow in our area and it attracts a lot of attention when in flower. WHAT’S ON
BEST AUSSIE SHORT FILMS ON BIG SCREEN Sunshine Coast film director Tom Noakes brings his film Nursery Rhymes to this year's Flickerfest short film festival at The J Theatre this month as part of its national tour. Growing up on the Sunshine Coast Tom didn't have film studies at his high school, so he was self-taught and pursued filmmaking as an art class project. "I mostly bummed around Alex skate park where I filmed mates skating. I carried a backpack and camera everywhere, filmed everything and honestly had no idea what I was doing," he said. "I still don't. I lived between Maroochydore and Buderim till I moved out of home and studied film at QUT in Brisbane, whereupon I met the same wonderful collaborators Will Goodfellow and Lucy Gaffy, that over 10

WHAT’S ON BIG TIME IN NOOSA
Vicki's motives as well-intentioned as they seem, or will jealousy rear its ugly head? The Big Time by David Williamson will be performed on March 21, 22, 23 at 7.30pm and March 23 at 2pm at The J Theatre, 60 Noosa Drive, Noosa Junction. Tickets $60-$65. Visit www.thej.com.au or phone 5329 6560. â—?
Jeremy Waters joins a starring cast in The Big Time.
David Williamson's newest play 'The Big Time' has been receiving rave reviews during its run in Sydney with critics declaring it "a theatre experience not to be missed" ahead of its Queensland Premiere at The J Noosa from 21-23 March. Presented by Noosa Alive! Festival in association with Sydney's Ensemble Theatre company, The Big Time's stellar cast includes Claudia Barrie, Zoe Carides, Aileen Huyn, Matt Minto and Jeremy Waters and is directed by Mark Kilmurry. The Big Time, Williamson's 54th play, is closely linked to both his professional and personal life. The connection focusses on almost 50 professional years in the theatre scene and his personal affiliation relates to his wife Kristin, a drama teacher and theatre critic, as well as his two NIDA graduate sons and actors' agent daughter. The play follows the story of Celia and Vicki, two women who were best friends at drama school. Celia is a high-profile soap star earning ridiculous amounts of money and enjoying a celebrity lifestyle. Vicki is scraping by playing gritty, critically acclaimed roles in independent theatre. When Vicki proposes they collaborate on an ambitious new film project, it could be a big opportunity for both to prove their mettle in the industry, but are

TNT FIRE IN JUNIOR CRICKET FINALS U12 Lightning v Buderim away (consolation final). Winning the toss and fielding, TNT took time to warm up but three wickets fell by drinks, Ollie taking another one handed screamer to add to his highlight reel this season. With Buderim well poised, the TNT boys were urged to clean them up quickly, and Cooper replied taking a pole first ball, next ball a run out, soon after Cooper gets another and Piyush cleans up the final wicket, Buderim all out for 100. A watchful start by Morgan and Cooper against some quick swing bowling laid the platform, with Piyush and Toby* holding steady in the middle order, and Max getting a few away late to ensure TNT end a tough season on a high! U12 Storm v Maroochydore Green away
(consolation final). TNT posted a healthy 6/174, top scorers Max 33 and Aedan 44*. TNT took to the field and put on another great display of controlled team bowling and fielding, restricting the opposition to 6/109. Charlie H 2/19, Aedan 1/1, Max 1/3 and Hamish 1/11. What an awesome way to finish the season. Congratulations Storm boys. U13 Storm at home v Flinders (semi-final). Match washed out, TNT through to the grand final due to finishing in first place overall. U13 Lightning v Palmwoods away (consolation final). Palmwoods batted first and started well, until Tom got the ball and took 2 wickets his first over. Palmwoods were 106 at drinks, but TNT then bowled and fielded exceptionally to keep them to 5/150, Mitch 2/8, Tom 2/12, Lochie 1/17. TNT's reply

was dented early, losing 2 wickets in the first over, then 2 more wickets soon after. Oliver dug in and and with the help of Lochie, Cohyn and Samuel, got us back in the game. But we needed more wickets in hand and fell short in the 25th over, 8/113. Highlight of the day was Samuel hitting his first boundaries on the way to his highest score. U14 v Caloundra (semi-final). TNT were up against it taking on first placed Caloundra, requiring a couple of fill ins. TNT got off to a good start to be 0/30. Then a little inexperience on turf with a wicket that was slow at times saw a spate of wickets fall. Caloundra bowled well and kept taking wickets regularly in a highly charged contest. TNT all out for 84, and probably 40 runs short of having a competitive total. TNT attacked early with the ball and had them 4/60 at one point, but ultimately TNT couldn't contain them. Congrats to the boys on finishing 4th in what has been a testing season. Teamwork and a never-say-die attitude saw us make the finals and give it a red hot go. U15 v Maroochydore away (consolation final). Maroochy batted first, scoring 6/92
after their 30 overs. TNT bowlers were excellent with the wickets shared. Putting the disappointment of just missing out on the finals behind them, TNT came out confident with the bat and managed to pass the total easily, finishing at 4/121. Top scorers were Ben Stewart 23*, Cade Holeszko 20*, Saif Malek 13* and Carl LeRoux 13. U16 at home v Yandina (consolation final). Batting first TNT put on a solid display with Cooper Lea top scoring with a great 84 (74 balls), unfortunate to miss his 100, but a great captains knock, and well supported by Max Cooper 36 and Jack Saunders 21*. TNT 3/165 off their 30 overs. Yandina lost wickets at frequent intervals but a good 50 from their best batter put them on target for the win. Then his dismissal by thanks to a great catch from Jack Floyd put TNT back in the game, but in the end Yandina passed the TNT score and won by just 6 runs. Pick of the bowlers was Payton Fraser with 5/18. This young team looks forward to giving it another crack next season! ●

Dog Kahuna Chris De Aboitiz foils the opposition. Although sometimes I wonder if the appeal of longboarding can continue to resonate with our youngest surfers in this Insta-driven world, a display like I saw last weekend can do the heart a lot of good. While there are a lot of great young Noosa longboarders - and the Lethbridges, Bowreys, Brewers, Gowers, Grohs and Cairns all performed admirably - the internationals won the day, with some elegant surfing beyond their years. Of course, we've seen the powerful young waterman Kaniela Stewart coming for a

couple of years now, but in his final junior year, the Hawaiian has really stepped up in size, power and style. Watch out world. Likewise, California's Avalon Gall has shown promise for a couple of years and now seems to have truly blossomed. In the under 15 grom ranks, Waikiki super slider Kelis Kalepaa was just sensational in the girls, while Californian prodigy Tommy Coleman, who didn't even know the rules last year, showed that he's all over the game now. Good one, groms. Loved your style. ●

Well, it was a different surfing festival opening weekend from our perspective, I have to say, the first in more than a dozen years that our family wasn't directly responsible for, and hadn't gone through the anguish of hourly consulting swell and weather maps, and even more frequently running the calculator over the costs blowout while praying that the rashies, the tee shirts, the water bottles, even the tents and the grog would arrive on time. Anyone who has ever run an event, big or small, whether it's a school fete or an international festival, knows the feeling, the slight nausea when you make a list of all the stuff you haven't done, the sleepless, sweaty nights as you try to balance the budget in your head, the long, mind-numbing days on the sand with a crumpled site map, trying to appease the latest bellicose resort manager who thinks he owns a public beach ... the list goes on. And even though I took a step back in 2015, and played more of a figurehead role while my daughters ran the show, it was still the family business, and we all shared the sweat and the buzz, in about equal measure, until last year when we called a halt, for all the right reasons. Which doesn't make it any easier to sever the emotional ties you have to something that has absorbed more than 20 years of a life (in my case) and been something they grew up with and loved (in the case of our daughters). So yeah, there was a tear in a few eyes as we watched a new era begin last weekend, but only because this festival has meant so much to us over so long, for me a quarter century since we put up a few bucks and our publishing company became a sponsor of the fledgling Noosa Longboard Classic, and 21 years since we turned it into a festival and took over its administration. But under somewhat difficult post-TC Oma circumstances, while blessed with waves, the festival lives on, and I enjoyed leading the traditional paddle-out with Mayor Tony Wellington, festival director John Finlay, Noosa Mal Club president Craig Johnson and a host of hot-to-trot competitors, locals and stoked groms. As I said when we formed the circle beyond the break on Saturday evening, it's always so good to feel the pulse of a new swell under your board when we perform this ritual. You know that even better waves are on the way. Another great aspect to opening weekend was the performance on Saturday night at the beach stage of festival long-time regulars Band of Frequencies, and on Sunday afternoon of Mat McHugh and his trio. Apart from being the surfiest band around, Shannon, OJ and the boys have been part of the furniture at the Noosa surf fest forever, and way back in 2010, they played support to The Beautiful Girls at our mega-concert at Lions Park. So how cool was it that Girls founder Mat McHugh made it back to the festival this year, with tour band drummer Bobby Alu and bassist Paulie B, who helped us produce our Wood & Foam soundtrack album with the Freaks a couple of years ago. So, beers all round, happy days, and booking person, thank you for making my weekend. The kids are alright It's a great song by The Who (or reprised by Eddie Vedder if you're merely middleaged) but it sprang to mind as I watched the beautiful classic longboarding of the junior longboard finals last weekend.

BETWEEN THE FLAGS
RON LANE
MEMORIAL SWIM NOW A TRADITION After sixteen years of being conducted at Noosas Main Beach, proud to say the Shirley Strachan and Bruce Warren Memorial Swim has become a tradition in the Noosa Surf club. Originally named after Shirley Strachan the name Bruce Warren was added after Bruce, who with the total support of wife Sandy, had for many years organised the running of the event, passed away. Because of the dedication of both Bruce and Sandy there was no hesitation in adding Bruce's name to the event. An honor well deserved as Bruce's work, both as a swim coach of bronze squad teams plus his support and dedication to the event; raising it to the position where it is now regarding as one of the traditions of the Noosa club. On several occasions Bruce had expressed his concern that with the introduction of the IRB and Jet Rescue Skis on our beaches, the importance of a strong swimming club could be pushed aside. However, had Bruce been there with us on Sunday morning and seen the number of 10, 11 and 12-year-old nippers taking part in this 1.2km swim (from Little Cove to the West Wall and back to Main Beach) there would have definitely been a smile on the face of this dedicated clubbie. When the starter's gun was fired at 9am some 75 swimmers (aged from 10 to late70s) entered the water and were immediately covered by three IRB teams and 10 water safety officers. Amongst those swimming in the masters were three members who have taken part in all 16 of the swims; Gina
Peter French, Tony Wetherell and Gina Lynch.
Charlie's gang. Lynch, Tony Wetherell and one of Bruce's best mates Peter French. At the other end of the spectrum were three young 11-year-olds doing their first swim. When asked their names one replied "Me and him are Charlies but he's a Harvey." (Charlie's gang - Charley Fell, Charley Ayton and Harvey Jackson.). We are three mates, we will swim together and finish together." This they did and when asked to pose for a photo they happily obliged standing close with their arms around each
other's shoulder. With characters such as the three originals and the three members of Charlies gang involved the future of this swim is looking good. Many thanks to all sponsors and organisers; Bruce,s wife Sandy, son William, daughter-in-law Anna, plus all the workers who rallied in support. John McDermott of McDermott Aviation, a great mate of Shirley Strachan sent his apology and best wishes for a great day. In the swim the first man home was
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
Jaspre Outram and first lady was iron woman champion Lana Rogers. A big well done to all who took part and made this yet another memorable swim. Like all clubs the Sunshine Club competitors are looking forward to a good championship season. Over the next two weekends they will compete in the Nipper state titles then the following weekend the open state. "Last year our nipper team finished in the top ten in Queensland," said coach Josh Minogue "so we are looking forward to the same or better this season. As our nippers are our future we consider this carnival to be of the utmost importance." We wish them well. â—?
MANGROVE JACK
START PLANNING FOR TUNA With autumn now upon us and with strong SE winds and swell keeping boats garaged, now is the time to start planning for the arrival of the longtail tuna and yellow fin tuna. While we wait it is also a great time to do any work on hulls, trailers, bearings and outboards. Be sure to pull out flair kits, life jackets and other mandatory safety gear and check for expiry dates to save a costly fine. For most anglers, the estuary has been the best option to get out of the wind with the dog beach, Munna point, Gympie Terrace all offering calmer conditions. The lower part of the river has seen some sizable flathead caught with many getting close to the no take 75cm size. To catch the bigger flathead fluorocarbon leaders of 12-16lb are best as the bigger fish have very raspy mouths. They respond well to small whole fish baits including whitebait, froggies and pilchards when used with smaller 2/0 gang hooks or a couple of smaller octopus style hooks and a small running sinker. For lure anglers it is best to use a 3-4 inch size grub style soft plastic for maximum attraction. Soft vibes are another great way to lure the big fish. Be sure to carry a landing net if after the trophy sized fish as they always have a big head shake in the shallows which sees many fish busted off. For bream, smaller 2-3 inch grub style plastics, crabs and prawn lures are the go to when casting into structure and around pontoons. With the recent rain you can 30 NOOSA TODAY

With daybreak much later, now is the time to get up early and cast a variety of lures including surface and metal slugs in the 10 gram range. These mimic a baitfish and are a great all-rounder for those just starting out. If fishing baits then prawns, pipis and mullet chunks are all great options to help catch a feisty fish. Crabs are also on the move with the rains and some good catches of muddies have been reported. Keep your pots close to the mangrove edges and away from the main boating channel for safety. Nothing beats fresh mullet as crab bait so be sure to use some when available. Freshwater has been quieter with the drop in daytime temps so casting the weed edges with sub surface, suspending lures and spinnerbaits is a great way to trigger a bite. If in a kayak or boat having a lure out the back while underway is a great way to find the fish. Take a look at various hardbodies in the 70-80mm size range and aim to have two different lures out. This ensures you are fishing 2 different depths with two different colours that have different actions. Looking for schooled up bass is another great option
