I wrote this book because I wanted people to know they’re not alone; to stand up for what you believe in, no matter how hard and to not give up.” Carolyn has been speaking at Probus clubs twice a week for the last six months, all from word of mouth. AUTHOR Carolyn Pethick has an amazing story - and wants to share it with Probus clubs. Carolyn is the author of To Hell and Back - A Policewoman’s Story - a memoir detailing her trials and tribulations working within the ranks of the Victoria Police Force from the early 1980s. She recounts numerous instances of harassment, false accusations and character assassinations that she experienced in the overwhelmingly maledominated industry. Carolyn lifted the veil on the blatant sexual discrimination, bullying and harassment that was an accepted part of police culture and the ‘boys club’ that was Victoria Police. “I was a problem that they wanted to go away,” she says. “The police force was their own worst enemy, because they made me

Ensure you belt up properly NEUROSCIENCE Research Australia (NeuRA) in partnership with Transurban has developed an informative brochure on correct usage of seat belts for seniors. This follows research that shows on average, around 250 Australians aged over 65 die every year in car crashes, and more than 4000 are hospitalised after a crash. Injuries sustained by elderly drivers are more severe than those in younger age groups. It is estimated that injury risk is nine times higher per kilometre in drivers 85 years and older compared to drivers between 25 and 69 years of age. Keeping seniors safe on our roads should be top of mind says Associate Professor Julie Brown, and using the seat belt correctly will help reduce the risk of injury. “At the heart of the safe systems approach is the understanding that humans have inherent frailties, both in terms of how our bodies respond in crashes and in our behaviours. The entire road system, including the vehicles operating in the system, must take these frailties into account,” said Associate Professor Julie Brown. “Cars are a primary means of transport for senior Australians. They provide independent living and enable social and community engagement and are particularly important where public transport is limited. Car safety is therefore a critical component of healthy ageing.” The Transurban Road Safety Centre based at NeuRA in Randwick NSW is
equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that allows researchers to study the frailty of the ageing human body, and to understand how vehicles and equipment can best protect us from injury on the road. Commenting on the education of seat belt fit and ageing, Transurban Road Safety Specialist Liz Waller said: “mobility is so important for healthy ageing, so one of our key focus areas is understanding how we can keep seniors as safe as possible, so they can maintain this mobility as they age.” “As we age, our body shape changes.
Research shows that variations in body shape such as increased weight or obesity, which may occur as a result of ageing, can negatively influence seat belt fit,” said Ms Waller. Car crashes and injuries are often preventable. Innovations designed to protect the occupant, such as airbags, vehicle structure and seat belts, have improved over the past 50 years. “The vehicle structure and the airbags will work in a crash in the way they are designed to work regardless of any action by drivers and passengers. However, the
seatbelt will only be effective if it is worn and it will be most effective when it is worn correctly,” said Ms Waller. “Today we are launching a booklet which aims to explain how seniors can make the most of the existing crash protection systems in the car,” said Associate Professor Brown. Research shows that correct usage of the seat belt is critical to the occupant’s safety. The goal of the brochure is to review how seat belts are designed to work, bring greater awareness to the importance of good seat belt fit and deliver tips on senior driver safety. To get the most out of the crash protection provided in your car, here are the top five things you should know: 1. Seat belts are highly effective and should always be worn 2. Seat belt positioning is important to get the best possible protection 3. Use the sash belt height adjusters to make sure the sash belt sits over the middle of the collar bone 4. Position the lap belt low, in contact with thighs and below any belly fat 5. If you are having comfort issues, seek advice about possible adjustments you can make to the vehicle seat This is the first in a series of publications NeuRA is developing in partnership with Transurban, to be released over the coming years. Our aim is to provide feedback and advice to the seniors’ community about safe mobility.

The wonders of Sri Lanka Armchair Travel Sue Grady IF golden beaches, misty mountains with giant waterfalls, mighty elephants on an open savannah or stealthy leopards all in their natural habitat is what excites you then an ancient and majestic past with the world’s best tea and warm smiles from the local people will sum up a country perfectly, it could be nowhere else but Sri Lanka. Travels through Sri Lanka provide an array of experiences from an abundance of wildlife, to a pilgrimage, to some of the oldest city sites in the world. The smiles and hospitality of the Sri Lankan people will fill your heart with warmth and fond memories. Despite its small size Sri Lanka is a global leader in many ways. It’s known worldwide for its precious gems, its exotic teas and cinnamon since the turn of the last century. In the past Sri Lankan cinnamon, ivory, and precious gems had been the cause for invasions from the Portuguese and Dutch, who followed the Moor traders to the country in search of the world’s best spices and riches. Even today the country produces the world’s best cinnamon and is still one of the world’s top cinnamon exporters. However prior to the countries fame for its cinnamon, the world knew Sri Lanka for its beautiful and valuable gemstones,
especially the Ceylon blue sapphires which are celebrated worldwide for their distinctive colour and luster. Yet it is the Ceylon tea which the world identifies the country by. Introduced to the country in the 19th century by the Colonial British, Sri Lanka had held the crown for producing the world’s best tea. Although many countries have joined the world tea market, Ceylon Tea made in Sri Lanka still continues to be the favourite of tea lovers worldwide. You can’t ignore the spectacular and diversified scenery this country offers. Sri Lanka is filled with romantic and majestic landscapes, governed by rising mountains, ancient cites, lush forests, tea plantations, ocean like tanks, and giant waterfalls, considered the lost paradise by many a
globe trotter who have fallen in love with this country. On the western coast of the country is Colombo, the capital city of the island, which displays a rich colonial heritage with a vibrant industry ready to take on the world. Travelling into the central interior of Sri Lanka takes us into the famous cultural triangle region. The landscape changes dramatically and is different from the rest of country. Ancient cities, colourful Hindu temples and Buddhist statues litter the landscape. Despite its small size, Sri Lanka is included among the top five biodiverse hotspots in the world. It’s time to join one of our “fully escorted” Trade Travel departures. Or why not form your own club departure?
Apart from devouring some of the most amazing food in the world, your highlights will include the bathing Elephants of the Maha Oya River at Pinnawalla Village, ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya “Lion Rock”, Minneriya and Yala National Park`s Wildlife Safaris, colourful markets of Kandy, Temple of the Tooth, Royal Botanical Gardens, Kandy Lake, Ramboda Falls, spectacular colourful terraced gardens and tea plantations of Nuwawa Eliya, historic Galle Fort, turtle hatchery, cooking demo`s and tea tastings. All this and more awaits you, as you stay in some of the best hotels and resorts Sri Lanka has to offer. Contact Trade Travel on 1800 034 439 or email groups@tradetravel.com to get a full itinerary.

Change the meeting time too Letter to the Editor Rhys Maggs
WHAT a great editorial comment from Jim Frew in the October-November edition of The Victorian Probian, with his comments about revitalising PAV. May I particularly applaud his comments about the location of the meeting venues. Whilst there is no ideal location to suit everybody in Victoria, somewhere in the northern suburbs has to be the best compromise for everybody. And what about a change in the start time? For delegates to get to Melbourne from places such as Mildura, Hamilton, Portland and Mallacoota, for example, means upwards of a five hour drive. As a past CEO of a statewide organisation I found it far more conducive to start meetings at say 2pm, allow people to stay overnight and mingle and then continue until lunch time on the following day. As long as meetings are held in the far Easter suburbs at 10am you will continue to get predominantly eastern suburbs and near West Gippsland attendees.
A lifetime achiever BY CASEY NEILL MONBULK Probus Club Life Member Trevor Ricketts received thanks for his lifetime of community service on Australia Day. The 86-year-old was awarded the Yarra Ranges Council Mayor’s Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony in Yarra Glen on 26 January. He served as the town’s Business and Traders Association president when the group lobbied for and succeeded in establishing the Monbulk Police Station. Mr Ricketts counts this among his greatest achievements. “He has been tirelessly and regularly involved in launching projects in his community and dedicated to helping others,” his award citation said. “He’s well-respected, trustworthy, fair and generous with his time. “He is an extraordinary community member, a leader and a mentor.” The Monbulk Probus Club past-president moved to Australia from the UK in 1948 and was sponsored out to Monbulk. “The whole town was very welcoming,” he said. Particularly welcoming were the parents of his future wife, Joan. After a year he moved to a flat in Hawthorn, and as a cheesemaker by trade manager a business in Doncaster. He’d return to Monbulk to visit Joan’s family and soon started building his own home in the town.
Monbulk stalwart Trevor Ricketts. “I built the home myself on the weekend and holidays,” Mr Ricketts said. It wasn’t long before he immersed himself in the community. He became a Justice of the Peace in 1969, and got mains water connected to Monbulk Primary while president of the Monbulk Primary School Committee. Mr Ricketts is the Monbulk Rotary Club charter president, a Monbulk Soccer Club past-president and life member, and a Monbulk and District Senior Citizens Club trustee and public officer for more than 35 years.
He was a Monbulk High School Committee treasurer, Lilydale Sewerage Authority Board member, Monbulk Scouts Parents Committee president, and a member of the liaison committee between Sherbrooke and Lilydale Councils, providing community input for the shire amalgamation. “I don’t do these things for reward or recognition,” he said. Today he’s the Monbulk and District Men’s Shed vice president and said he’d “quietened down”.

dawned again pretty ordinary weather-wise, with light rain and heavy skies. Some took the chance and enjoyed lunch by the river at Weir Park, a great venue with all facilities available, even swings and slides- those for a later generation or two! Others took the opportunity to explore some of the wheat silos - a good round trip to Warracknabeal, to Brim, back south to Sheep Hills (two of the nicest art-works), and to Rupanyup, some 170km round trip. The silos have received much publicity in recent editions of The Probian. Happy hour on Wednesday, as is another established event, we met with members of Horsham Probus Club - a warm welcome to President Kola Kennedy, Edith Wyatt, Bill, Josey, Catherine, and Graham, a most

WHAT a surprise packet Horsham turned out to be for the Probian Wanderers. Initial thoughts of ‘What is there to do there?’ We never stopped - in a couple of ways Event No. 35 went off with a bang! A total of 75 souls made the extended trek to that fair city in October, 2018 - a representation of 13 Victorian Probus clubs. There was so much to see and do, the week was just too short a time. Weather-wise, not so good. Strong winds from the start, developing into rain, and to thunder and lightning. Still, that added to the entertainment! Sunday and Monday, pending the arrival cabin-dwellers, were set for exploring the City, the picturesque Botanical Gardens and Wimmera River. Tuesday night, long established as the “dine-out event, saw a total attendance at the Bull and Mouth Hotel, a recommendation of local residents, proved to be a place of good food and friendly service. Thereafter, a number of members attended a photo night, when our Peter Bellmont, a nationally accredited photographer, took them on a tour of South America, and to the local Wheat Silos. Later that night saw a marked deterioration in the weather. The winds strengthened late evening to the stage caravaners tightened their annexe ropes, shut themselves inside, sat nervously, and prayed! Then the rains followed, driven by an increase in wind velocity. A relatively sleepless night for the aforesaid dwellers! Wednesday, traditional picnic day,
friendly group. But then, the events of Wednesday were not quite over! Thunder and lightning had a brave few outside watching an unbelievable electronic display. And the thunder, at one time directly overhead, literally shook the ground underfoot. The more sensible took refuge inside. Thursday, relatively windless with a threatening sky, saw a large contingent of members visit the “Stick Shed, a very much under-publicised gem located at nearby Murtoa. Built in four months in 1941 to house a bumper crop of wheat, the ‘shed’ almost rivalling Jeff’s Shed in dimensions, held almost 100,000 tonnes of wheat. The 19-metre high gabled roof is supported by 540 mountain ash ‘sticks’
obtained from the Healesville area. Several similar sheds were built, this now being the last remaining one in Australia, and is heritage-listed - a ‘must visit’ for tourists. So to Friday - cabin-dwellers set off to return home in lovely, sunny weather, would you know it! The remainder enjoyed the change in weather to catch up on unexplored locations, including nearby Mt. Arapiles, Mitre Rock, Tooan State Park, and the quaint little village of Natimuk. Events No. 36 and 37 of 2019 are to Inverloch in February and Healesville in October respectively. Full details are listed elsewhere in the Probian, and on Probus Victoria website - www.probusvic.com.au - Ken Heaslip, Greensborough Combined Probus.

Probians on spiritual journey INVERLOCH Probus Club, together with members from Anderson’s Inlet, Woorayl Probus Clubs and the Inverloch Men’s Shed, took part in a guided tour of the Many Faiths, One People Network. This is run by the Greater Dandenong Shire to encourage inter-faith respect, understanding and recognition of different faiths and spiritual traditions. The tour embraced Hindu and Chinese Buddhist temples, an Islamic Mosque and an Orthodox Church. Their first stop was at the Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple (Hindu) at Carrum Downs, where the Indian host explained that Hindu beliefs are a way of life, rather than the worshipping of one deity. In fact, Hindus have many, many deities. Next was the Turkish Islamic Cultural Centre and Mosque in Keysborough. The host Imam, explained and demonstrated some of the procedures that members must complete before entering the Mosque proper for worship. Shoes must be removed and socks worn. Before entering the Mosque to worship each worshipper must go through a thorough washing ritual. Inside the Mosque worshippers must stand on a line with each person touching shoulders with his neighbour and then follow a strict prayer ritual. There are various strict requirements to become a Moslem and to continue in the faith of Islam. The St Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church, Dandenong, was set in a large industrial area. The church is Turkish Orthodox and features a splendid array of gilded icons of Christian saints.

Although the Orthodox Churches are Christian, their conservative doctrine has not changed for centuries, unlike mainstream churches. St Paul’s Centre provides a large meeting and eating area and kitchen for the use of its church community. The church is very active in pastoral care of its large congregation.
The Bright Moon Buddhist Society (Chinese) Temple in Springvale South is a very large complex still in the process of development, the cost of which is heavily covered from supporters in China. Buddhism is a way of life seeking enlightenment as taught by the Buddha. Buddhists are taught to care for others, and prepare for the next life, which they
believe involves reincarnation to a being, preferably at a higher level, dependent on how this life had been lived. The temple is a splendid example of Chinese architecture. Many of the faithful who have passed have gilded plaques covering the walls of the temple, which is where their ashes are held and can be visited by their families and friends.

Club tour of William Angliss NINETEEN Probians from the Probus Club of Donvale Hill (plus one granddaughter) enjoyed a great day out having an interesting and informative tour of The William Angliss Institute followed by a delicious three course lunch. William Angliss is the specialist centre for the foods, tourism, hospitality and events industries, with more than 7000 students, 60 per cent local and 40 per cent international. It is a very varied and busy centre. The international students this year are mostly South Korean, in previous years mostly Indian and before that Vietnamese. The tour commenced with Angeline (the guide), taking all to the second floor where the group was introduced to the Flying Simulator, sitting in airline seats where students do part of their flight attendant, and first aid course working in a very confined space. From here, the group visited three mini motel training suites, each one a different style, one having a Japanese influence with a bath! One member offered to become a guest if they needed “guest training”. They unfortunately did not take up the offer! The group then moved on to view through the windows the bread making kitchen, patisserie kitchen where the students were assembling croquembouche, the chocolate and sugar laboratory, but unfortunately it wasn’t operating that day but we did see wonderful creations in glass showcases that the students had made. The final kitchen viewed was the dessert preparation and plate presentation. As the tour continued, the enormity of the college became apparent. It takes up
almost the entire block in Latrobe Street from Spencer to King streets. There are seven buildings in all, the original one built in 1940 the facade of which is heritage listed. There is a very pleasant outdoor seating area and a surprisingly large and prolific herb garden. Next stop - the retail outlet- as vanilla slices were on the cooking menu that day. Most of the group bought some to take home - what a bargain - four or five for $4. There were also lots of other goodies to buy, breads, pies etc. depending on what was on the cooking menu that day. The general public are invited to shop
there, so anytime you are in town, take a walk up Latrobe Street and you will find it. There is also a small cafe/coffee shop. Now it was time for lunch - into one of their three dining rooms set up with two round tables to seat 10 per table. Firstly all the students offered the choice of three drinks - a mocktail, a Baileys Irish Cream based cocktail and a Whisky Sour, the very refreshing mint laced mocktail proved popular. Lunch was the choice of four different foods for each of three courses. All were not disappointed, the taste was delicious, the presentation excellent, and the
service very good. The students work in the dining room one day per week to gain experience in all facets of hospitality. We have been on quite a few activities that Ken has organised and we would recommend that more members take the opportunity of attending these outings. You will not be disappointed. Thank you Ken for taking the time to arrange these outings for our pleasure and enjoyment. A great day out! - Marlene Gibson

San Remo, wagons ho WHEN a group from Heathmont Ladies Probus took part in a Wagon Ho expedition to San Remo, they were fortunate to be taken on a mail run. One of our Margarets regularly travelled this trail, helping her parents who ran the local Post Office. With their husbands, the ladies thoroughly enjoyed the countryside during a patch of fine weather. Caravans and cabins, meals together and much fun, fellowship and friendship was had during three days in the countryside.
Margarets everywhere! WHEN the President of Heathmont Ladies Probus, Margaret, inducted Margaret at the last meeting, she was the tenth Margaret to join the club. All the Margarets are regular attendees and are involved in a variety of activities within the club. Surely this is a unique and unrivalled circumstance. Can any other club match this?

Amazing piece of equipment THE Monash Combined Probus Club visited the Australian Synchrotron, a major research facility located in Clayton, a technology and innovation hub of South East Melbourne. It is one of Australia's most significant pieces of scientific infrastructure. It supports the research needs of universities and research centres, as well as businesses both local and international. The Synchrotron was initially started as a Victorian Government project, but has since been taken over by the Commonwealth Government and operates through ANSTO, Lucas Heights. It has been in operation for 11 years and operates on a user pays basis. A synchrotron is a machine that accelerates electrons to produce intense beams of light for use in scientific experiments. The synchrotron light source is about a million times brighter than the sun. These light beams are used to examine the atomic and molecular structure of a wide range of materials. The synchrotron technique offers several advantages over conventional laboratory methods. The results are superior in terms of accuracy, quality, and robustness, including the level of detail that can be seen, and that it can be collected much faster. For instance an experiment which would take three days using conventional laboratory techniques would take eight seconds in the synchrotron. This technique has been used in many areas including development of advanced materials and new products for agriculture, biomedical, defence, environmental sustainability, food technology, forensics, oil
and gas, mining and nanotechnology. Our tour group of 23 members was led by Zorin, a physicist, who cited numerous examples illustrating the diverse ways in which the Synchrotron is benefitting us all. We heard about research through the study of wood termites for the development of optimal structures which benefit engineering and construction. Then there was the study for the improvement in ventilating premature babies through a study of the lung tissue of baby rabbits. The development of tailored pharmaceuticals is another big area of research using the synchrotron technique, with the aim of delivering targeted drugs and increasing efficiency and minimizing side-effects.
The Synchrotron techniques are nondestructive and as such have played a valuable role in helping to preserve valuable documents and works of art. It has also been used to peer behind the layers of paint to discover earlier works which the artist has painted over. There are 12 synchrotrons in the world and only USA and China have two each. The Australian Synchrotron is a third generation design and currently they are looking at upgrading to a fourth generation. This will cost $200 million and will shut the facility for two years. The scientists who work here are part of an active community who move between synchrotrons, training up the next generation of engineers and physicists,
passing on a culture of thinking and ideas peculiar to its community. Currently the largest synchrotron at 27 kms is in Switzerland, but there are plans to build one 100 kms. Whilst it was challenging to take in some of the scientific data describing the facility and how it works, it was none-the-less very interesting to gain awareness and an appreciation of the exciting work that is being done here. Clearly the Synchrotron is future orientated and the discoveries resulting are benefitting us all, whether directly or indirectly through industry and the economy. - Alan Cawsey, past president Monash Combined Probus Club.
A new year is the perfect time to write or renew your Will
Family is important to all of us, so it’s surprising that half of all Australians don’t have a Will (or an up to date version of it). If that’s you, then you risk not having control over what happens to your assets after you’ve gone. The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to get a legally binding Will in place. There are several reasons why people often don’t have a Will. For many, it simply falls in the too-hard basket. Talking about death and how we want to distribute our estate after we have passed is not a common topic. Many people think creating a Will is going to be a long and complicated process. Yet in most cases, it’s really simple. Also, some people mistakenly believe that they don’t own enough to justify a Will. But what they forget is that we’re all worth much more dead than we are alive when you factor things like superannuation and life insurance into the equation. Over the years I have spoken to many Probus groups about the status of their Will and accompanying vital documents, agreeing that protecting our families after we pass is paramount. We know that most people who don’t have a Will want one, they just haven’t got around to it. Why you should have a Will As most Probarians are now enjoying their much deserved retirement years, an up to date Will has never been more important.
The main reasons to create a Will include: 7
to appoint someone – an executor – who has the authority to step into your shoes and tend to your affairs when you die
7
to communicate your wishes regarding the distribution of your assets after your death, and
7
to try to avoid disputes that may arise if you don’t create a Will.
Many of the disputes we deal with at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers result from people not having a Will, or having one that is out of date and doesn’t reflect the deceased’s circumstances at the end of their life. Sometimes people think they have to have all of their affairs sorted before they can set them down in a Will. But provided you’ve got a basic plan around what you want to do, it’s important to get that in writing. Then you’ll have an executor of your Will appointed, so you won’t have a fight about who’s going to administer your Will, plus you’ll have some instructions in place.
So what happens to your assets if you don’t make a Will? You will be considered ‘intestate’ if you pass away without a Will. The legal system would then distribute your estate according to a formula, known as an intestacy formula that has been set out in an act of parliament. Basically, your assets will be distributed among those you’ve left behind according to their relationship to you. Often, this starts with a spouse or children.
By not having a Will, you essentially lose control of your assets. You’re effectively delegating the decisions about the distribution of your estate to the legal system. Though every state and territory has its own intestacy regime, the basic principles are the same throughout Australia. Avoid family drama and disagreements To minimise disagreements among your family members after you’re gone, having a Will is a really good place to start. Then, at least you’ve expressed what your wishes are, and your survivors – and the legal system – have something to go by. Give careful thought as to who you think you owe a responsibility to when you’re providing for them in your Will. People will say to me, “I want a Will that’s absolutely challenge-proof.” Sure, you can make a Will that’s pretty solid, but if you leave out
a child or your spouse, for example, then you run a real risk that they will challenge your Will. We understand it can be stressful preparing these important documents and that’s why our team of expert Wills and Estate Lawyers will manage the process for you quickly and cost effectively, so you will have peace of mind knowing that you are protecting those you care about by having a legally sound Will.

Making a bee-line to the honey THE Noble Park Combined Probus Club enjoyed an outing to the honey farm at Moorooduc. The day started at the Mornington Street Market, where members browsed through a great variety of goods. This Wednesday market has been going for a number of years and is well worth the visit. Afterwards it was off to Pure Peninsula Honey at Moorooduc. This was quite educational and members came away not only with knowledge of Queen Bee and her harem but also carrying the gifts purchased. Then it was off to Steeples at Mornington for lunch, arriving back at the club at 4-ish.

Day out at Gumbuya TOWARDS the end of 2018, Latrobe Ladies Probus, Traralgon, travelled to Gumbya World at Tynong for a day out. On arrival members were given an informative talk about the facilities which opened there about a year ago, which include the established of a very comprehensive Water Park, which they looked at but did not go into. They were introduced to the native animals in the Wild Life Trail by a very informative wildlife carer and were then given time to explore the trail, personally connecting with some of the animals. This was followed by a delightful lunch together in the cafe before returning to Traralgon. Afterwards the excursion led to much talk and sharing of the experiences.

East Malvern men on tour EACH year the East Malvern Combined Probus Club applies to the Stonnington Council for use of their 20-seater bus for a day outing. The club has one outing for the ladies and one for the men to satisfy their different interests. This year, the men’s trip went to Eltham
Memorial lookout tower for great views as far as Port Phillip Bay. This was followed by morning tea at the Dark Horse Cafe before proceeding to Yarra Glen, with a brief visit to the nearby chocolate factory. The group then drove on to the RACV Club in Healesville for a great two course lunch before making their way back to East Malvern.
Christmas at the Dorset ONE hundred and twenty members and guests of the Ringwood Clocktower Probus Club enjoyed fun and friendship when they celebrated with a Christmas lunch at the Dorset Gardens Hotel. Carols were sung with the words displayed on two large screens organised by web master Col Pask. John Wicks played Father Christmas to give presents to those whose names were drawn from a box on each table. John also played the pipes to commence the serving of a delicious meal. Entertainment was provided by Paul Davies who sang many old favourites from the sixties and seventies. East Ringwood Bendigo Bank represent-

A classical music prodigy Doncaster East toast THE Probus Cub of North Balwyn Heights was privileged to have international pianist Ambre Hammond as the guest speaker at its October meeting. Ambre is a concert pianist who told members the story of her life as the only child of an English mother hell-bent on raising a classical prodigy and built her world around music. In 1989, at the age of 12, she was awarded her Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) Associate and Licentiate Diplomas of music in the same year - a world record. At 16 she won an international piano competition and released her first CD. She performed around the world with an array of orchestras and ensembles. She was appointed the Peace Ambassador for music for the United
Nations Association of Australia for her work in bringing music to underdeveloped schools including Timor and Africa through her project she calls ‘Girl Piano Truck’. This is a heart rending story told with passion followed by a short recital of Chopin’s Fantaisie Impromptu. This is an example of the talented and interesting speakers North Balwyn Heights has have at monthly meetings held at 10am the first Monday of each month at the Baptist Church Hall 136, Doncaster Road Balwyn North.
THE 25th anniversary of the Combined Probus Club of Doncaster East was celebrated at the Box Hill Golf Club with a delightful lunch and entertainment from comedian Don Jones. A great time was had by more than 60 members and guests sharing fun and fellowship. Two of the club’s founding members, Moira Axtens and Graham Rogers, gave a brief history of the club before cutting the cake. The club meets on the first Friday of the month at the Pathway Baptist Church Templestowe. During the month members and guest participate in outings, golf, canasta, crazy whist, theatre and film activities.

Betty earns the no-bell prize IN December 1998, just 15 months after the Templestowe Central Probus was formed, members started a bike rider’s group and called them the “Recyclists”. The aim was to provide members with a chance for regular exercise and a social outing. Members would ride 30km or so fortnightly and enjoy a break for coffee and a chat on the way. At times there were up to 22 regular riders and there is an annual week away riding on various Victorian rail trails. The activity was most successful and group members were encouraged by the fitness they developed. So much so that it wasn’t long (2009) before they were surprised to find an 80-year-old riding in the group. They wanted to do something to mark his achievement. Putting their heads together, it was decided that anyone that turned 80 while riding would be awarded a certificate. It was to be called a “No Bell” award. Brian was the first recipient in December 2009. Since then six other men have passed

continued riding past the age barrier. However Betty Laidlaw is one that has been riding since inception and qualified for a “No-Bell” award in December. The group hopes this achievement will encourage other women now riding with the
incentive to continue riding until they are all eligible for their own “No Bell” award. Certificates have been presented to: Ron McWiggan, Alan Ellery, Bruce Young, Bernie Goggin (pictured), Brian Wise, Brian Knowles, and Stuart McCulloch.
A great day on the cards at Sandown Park WOW, what a great day it was for the sixth Annual 500 Card Tournament held on 22 October Sandown Park Hotel - a day of five hundred followed by a delicious lunch and afternoon tea. Shirley Jones from the Combined Probus Club of Forest Hill Strathdon was the organiser of the tournament and the day. Members of that club and friends helped out on the day.
Everyone was so keen to play they arrived early and were welcomed with the offer of a tea or coffee. Some had travelled from afar, namely, Rosebud, Narre Warren and Templestowe. Other clubs that played on the day were Cerberus, Syndal, Wheelers Hill (five teams) Forest Hill Strathdon, Monash Central, Whitehorse, East Malvern Combined. At 9.45am Shirley welcomed the 76
players and gave a short talk on the order of the day and rules for scoring and playing. Eight games were played and the winning club was Forest Hill Strathdon , team name The Four Rejects - Trudi Willers, Ed Denbraber, Wendy Doolan and Avril Fogarty. They were awarded the top prize of “Champion Four”. The other prizes awarded were “Next Best Pair” from Wheelers Hill, namely Johan de Grotenhuis
and David Baker. The Most Joker Award was won by Gayle Cameron of Narre Warren. To end the day on a joyful note, several door prizes of bottles of red and white wine were given to lucky winners of the door prize. enjoying “Nanna Naps”, the opinion of the tired group was that it was a very enjoyable outing and when was the next one.
ON a glorious sunny day, 18 teams took to the Mooroopna Bowls Club Greens to compete for the Annual Trophy on 29 October 2018 after being welcomed by past president Athel Chapman. Bowlers were greeted on arrival with a range of delicious scones with tea and coffee. After playing a spider, the games commenced in earnest, with one game of 14 ends of Two Bowl Triples, and then a enjoyed a delicious cold collation lunch with fruit salad and Ice cream for sweets. It was then back to the greens for a further two games of eight ends. At the end of the day there was only one three game winner, with three teams with two games and one loss.
After a check of the cards the eventual winner was Alan Moore from Euroa with John Robinson’s team from Mooroopna Probus coming in in second place. A large raffle was then conducted with many prizes being donated by business houses and individuals. Trophies for Spider, resting touchers and winners were then presented by Mooroopna Probus president Bett Thomas., who thanked all for being present and who wished that all had had a great day, renewing past friendships and making new ones. As has happened for many years, players expressed their pleasure for the day. Teams had travelled long distances to compete from the likes of Rochester, Benalla, Cobram, Seymour and Euroa.

IT was a very chilly morning when a coach load of members from the Probus Club of Traralgon Combined and guests departed for a trip to Tesselaar’s Tulip Farm. After a brief comfort stop at Officer they continued on through the beautiful Yarra Ranges, passing many tall eucalypts and ferny gullies. Arriving at the Tulip Farm it was heart warming to be greeted with sunshine although there was still a very icy wind. Many members took advantage of walking through the farm and admired the many displays of colourful tulips. The members were surprised with the outdoor sculpture exhibition, with some very impressive pieces made from scrap metal. As the property is very large members took advantage of the tractor ride through the vast farm saving their legs and energy from the long uphill walk. A warming cup of tea or coffee was very welcome inside the marquee after the chilling wind of the outdoors. Many members purchased tulips either freshly picked or in pots. Leaving the Tulip Farm the coach bearing the group headed for the lunch venue travelling through back roads so that our members could enjoy the very picturesque scenery. Lunch was at the Cardinia Park Hotel and enjoyed by all. On the return trip to home it was a very quite coach, many

A special day - 25 years SEPTEMBER 17 2018 was a special day in the history of the Probus Club of Traralgon Combined, it was the day we celebrated the 25th anniversary of its foundation. The celebration was held at the Traralgon Vineyard and commenced at 11am, in attendance was 90 club members including the five remaining foundation members and a number of guests. Dignitaries in attendance were Joan Vogels OAM President of the Probus Association Victoria and Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan representing the Mayor of Latrobe City. All were welcomed by our president Ian Ewart OAM. Prior to the cutting of the 25th anniversary cake a number of presentations took place. First was the awarding of life membership to Doug Curnick. Doug was the inaugural treasurer and held that position for three years; he was also on committee in various positions on another five occasions. He has organised the club’s golfers in the local
Probus Golf Competition since 1993. Next was the awarding of Certificates of Appreciation to four members, Arthur Glover, Dick Chessum, Friederike and Herman Wasmayr for a significant contribution to club activities for many years. The other presentation which took place was the awarding of 25 year pins to the remaining foundation members, Gwen and Doug Curnick, Jessie and John Pritchard and Dot Rees. The five foundation members and the president were involved in the cutting of the beautiful anniversary cake; each person in attendance received a piece in a presentation bag. Both dignitaries gave a short address to the members. Following the formal part of the meeting all enjoyed a delicious two course meal followed by tea or coffee. A Power Point presentation of the club’s history and activities from inception was played continuously.

Life honour for Doug
Arthur's accolades
THE Probus Club of Traralgon Combined awarded life membership to Doug Curnick and the presentation was made at the 25th Anniversary of the club’s formation celebrations. Doug’s Probus history began early 1993; he was one of the 42 people on Rotarian Bill Sindt list of those to be invited as prospective members for a proposed Combined Probus club in Traralgon. Fortunately for us, Doug said yes to the invitation and became a foundation member of the new club. At the inaugural meeting Doug was elected to the position of Treasurer, he was re-elected to this position in 1994 and 1995. From 1995 to 1999 and again from 2001 to 2005 Doug served on the Management Committee in a various number of positions one of which was the position of assistant Treasurer. In 1993 our foundation year, Doug was given the task of organising a group of members who were golfers, to represent the club in the golf competition which was run for local Probus clubs. Having carried out this task successfully, Doug continued as organiser and still does. Doug also has had a great input into the overall running of the golf completion, and it’s Presentation Day in December each year. It is worth recording that this club has had great success in the competition winning the Terry Dixon Trophy on a number of occasions.
ONE of the Probus Club of Traralgon Combined’s long serving members Arthur Glover was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his significant contribution to club activities. He was inducted into this club on 5 September 1994. Sometime after this he formed a Walking Group and continued to organise the monthly walking trips ably assisted by his great mate Dick Chessum. The group mainly went on 5-6 kilometre walks mainly in the bush, this appealed to Arthur and Dick as both had many years experience in anything to do with the Australian bush. These walks were held in many and varied local areas but on occasions they went further afield to such places as Walhalla and Maffra. Members going on these walks were given an education on the local fauna and flora and generally the group finished their morning walk having their cut lunch and drink before heading home. The number of members in the group was usually around 10 and from all accounts they enjoyed their outdoor trips and looked forward to the next one. These bush walking trips continued until 2009 at which stage age caught up with many and the walks ended. A more leisurely local walk was organised by others from within the club.

Arthur the president following the presentation. Arthur is also a gifted craftsman, and the club is the beneficiary of his talents. The box with the Probus logo on the lid in which our badges are kept is an example as is the new stand on which the President’s collar hangs at each of our meetings.

Sharing old treasures HEATHMONT Ladies Probus meet on the first Monday each month. Meetings are held at 2pm in the bowls club, The Greenway, Heathmont. The January meeting was an interesting experience. Many members brought along some of their memorabilia which included broaches, watches, necklaces and recipes from mothers and grandmothers, newspaper cuttings and reports and baby dolls, dressed in hand-knitted clothing. Much interest was shown in these items as the ladies moved from table to table to admire the displays. This was an excellent way for members to circulate. The club celebrated its 29th birthday on 4 February with a grand afternoon tea. Several of the foundation ladies, who formed Heathmont Ladies all those years ago, still regularly attend the meetings and participate in the smaller groups. Heathmont Ladies welcome visitors to the friendly club. For more information please contact Jeanette 9729 6197 or 0428 368 653.
Syndal members Rennus Crossley, Lynne Bennett, Maree Wildenberg, Henny Thompson and Cherry Fuller.
A life-saving addition SYNDAL Ladies Probus Club has successfully pitched for the Bendigo Community Bank at Pinewood to fund the purchase of a portable heart defibrillator for use primarily by the club at the monthly meeting on the fourth Thursday morning of the month at the Youth Centre in Miller Crescent, Mount Waverley. The defibrillator will also be available to others using the Council Community Centre adjoining the Youth Centre at this time. Being portable it will be able to come with us on bus trips. The defibrillator arrived on the morning of the club’s January meeting where Australian Pacific Training Solutions demonstrated how to use the unit. The pitching involved a lot of planning and hard work by the five ladies that volunteered to assist. It was a great learning experience and so pleasing that we achieved what we set out to have.
Mountain rail journey IN September, 23 members of the Combined Probus Club of Wyndham travelled to the Kerrisdale Mountain Railway, situated in a corner of the Tallarook Ranges in Victoria. The railway and museum are the culmination of a lifelong dream of Andrew and Jennifer, who with a dedicated group of volunteers took almost 15 years to establish. On arrival club members indulged in homemade rock cakes, tea and coffee and then it was “all aboard”. The train zigs-zags to the Summit Station where there is a 360 degree panorama over the beautiful Victorian countryside. Host Andrew was very knowledgeable about the history of the area, early explorers and settlers and kept up a running
commentary that held our interest. The group enjoyed a sausage sizzle lunch in the great outdoors and then a walk through the museum. Andrew has a huge collection of things
“steam” and “mechanical” and took members through the different ages of powered equipment. Last is his pride and joy, the restored steam locomotive he is rebuilding, years in
the making and nearing completion. Members all agreed this outing to the Kerrisdale Mountain Railway was a little unique and a bit off the beaten track to our usual trips, but most enjoyable. 12410807-DJ09-19

Fairy fun, friendship and fellowship IN October, 52 members of the Probus Club of Ballarat South embarked on their second Caravan and Camping venture for the year. Port Fairy, with its interesting mix of ocean, wildlife and history, was a popular choice. The Big 4 Port Fairy Caravan Park paid special attention to members during the seven night stay, giving exclusive access to the Shearwater room for group activities, and providing a delicious roast dinner with all the trimmings, and a pancake breakfast. Members also loved the trivia and bingo nights, and took advantage of the luxurious indoor heated pool and the onsite mini golf course. For those who couldn’t get enough golf, a half-round at the Portland course was also played! Other members enjoyed fishing, trips to Tower Hill and Warrnambool and walks around the mutton bird sanctuary at Griffiths Island. The marina and beach were explored, as well as the port which, during its heyday in the 1950s, was the second largest in Australia after Sydney. The trip was declared by all a resounding success.
Secret slice of Murray history
Members enjoying the Shearwater room. It was a fun way to build friendship & fellowship with other members, and the club highly recommends Port Fairy and
its Big 4 Caravan Park to other clubs looking for a destination for their next trip.
FORTY members of Ballarat Probus Club New Generation recently travelled to Swan Hill, staying at the Big 4 Caravan Park. Members enjoyed a wealth of activities including walks along the river frontage, golf, bowls, a winery tour, visiting the Pioneer Settlement, the Beat of the Murray Sound and Light Show, happy hours followed by barbecue teas , games of petanque and cooling off in the camp park swimming pool. A visit to the Flying Boat Museum at Lake Boga also aroused much interest. This top secret Flying Boat Repairs Depot, including an underground Communications Bunker, was built in 1942 for the servicing of flying boat aircraft during World War Two. Dinner at the Murray Downs Golf Club seemed a fitting finale after several days of fun and fellowship.

A Murray meander VERY early one morning 36 BunyipGarfield Probus Club members flew to Adelaide to start an adventure. On arrival we were met by the guide and driver who took us to Glenelg where we had a walk along the pier as well as the beach. Then we went up to Mt Lofty before heading to Hahndorf for lunch and a browse around the lovely town before travelling to the town Murray Bridge to start a five day trip on the Murray River aboard the paddle steamer the Proud Mary. After meeting the crew we had a buffet supper then it was off to bed as it had been a long day. Overnight we had arrived at Woodlane and as we cruised we had breakfast before arriving at Mannum we then boarded their bus for a tour of the town. We also visited the museum and found out that this was where the paddle steamer river boat trade began back in the late 1800 hundreds. Back on the boat we cruised to Walker Flat for an Australian Dinner and nocturnal spotlighting tour to look for the Southern Hairy nosed wombats. Our next stop was Swan Reach where we visited an Almond Orchard then back to the boat to cruise into Moorundie Creek named after the Aboriginal Tribe that had lived there. News of the day, we had lost one of our ladies and she was found with the captain steering the boat. Good on her. We then boarded smaller boats and cruised through lagoons and inlets of Big Ben also Number One Lock before having an Aussie barbecue on shore with live traditional entertainment around a campfire. As the next day was so hot a guide came on board from the historical
Supporting the locals PAYNESVILLE Probus Club has recently introduced a new initiative within the club to support local businesses by holding monthly outings to hotels, wineries, cafes and restaurants in the area. The outings have been named the “Lunch @ The Local“ group and 45 members attended the second outing held at The Bruthen Inn in Bruthen, where a great afternoon was enjoyed by all.

Aboriginal Ngout Ngout who gave us an interesting talk about it. Later we went back to Mannum and moored for the night we were treated to a formal Captain’s Dinner which was amazing. The next day we went by bus for a tour of Reedy Creek Environment area then on to another very interesting place Mypolonaq Primary School we were welcomed by the students who have a wonderful school program. They have a shop and each class makes different things to sell/ market and then record everything they sell. We were
impressed with this fantastic program that the school is doing. It was now time to head back to the boat where we had a scrumptious lunch of prawns, oysters and turkey with salad before heading back to Murray Bridge to start our trip home. We sadly said goodbye to the crew who had looked after us so well and then boarded the bus that would take us back to the airport in Adelaide to fly home. - Helen Peggie

A Spring Silver Celebration THE past and present members of the Blackburn Bellbird Combined Probus Club celebrated the club’s 25th birthday, on a beautiful Spring day in October. The hall was decorated with Spring flowers and the guests sat down to a delicious lunch provided by Marg Bevan and her team. Prior to lunch all were entertained by Blue Tango, a jazz trio from the Australian Jazz Museum. The club’s resident poet, Joyce Smith, composed and recited a very amusing poem about the 25 year history. The birthday cake was cut by Graham Lydiard, the first president of the club. Robert Renshaw, Rotary District Probus Chairman, presented Gae Robinson, the current chairperson, with a certificate from PSPL, to commemorate the occasion. It was a marvellous celebration of many years of the Probus motto, Fun, Friendship and Fellowship, at its best!
Enjoyable trip to Sri Lanka MEMBERS of Ringwood Clocktower, Croydon Park, Maroondah Combined and Ringwood East clubs recently had a very enjoyable trip to Sri Lanka. The group is photographed in front of the famous Lion Rock in Sigiriya and in the foyer of the beautiful Aliya Resort in Sigiriya.

THIRTY years ago, on 7 November, 1988, the inaugural meeting of The Ladies Probus Club of Mount Eliza Village was held in the Uniting Church, Narthex, Mount Eliza. The meeting was attended by 51 Ladies. On 15 October 2018, 30 members of the present club attended a birthday lunch to celebrate the Pearl Anniversary of the club’s inception, at Norwood House, Mount Eliza. Amongst those present was Jo Keily, one of the original members, who cut the birthday cake, along with president Brenda Campbell and vice-president Libby Macheski. The objectives set out in 1988 still remain the same to this date - to visit places of interest; enjoy interesting guest speakers, and the forming of groups such as book club, solo, scrabble, coffee
mornings, and many other activities to challenge the mind. These activities have brought about companionship and many lasting friendships. Ladies Probus Club of Mount Eliza Village meets at 10am on the first Monday of each month at the Mount Eliza Uniting Church, Canadian Bay Road, Mount Eliza, Victoria.

club news
ARARAT Probus Club of Ararat had 43 members travel to Melbourne by train on 22 October 2018 for its annual mystery trip. This excursion took in Parliament House and the MCG with comprehensive tours of both venues. Planning is well underway for the Caravan and Cabin trip to Mildura in March 2019, where members will spend four nights exploring the attractions of the city. The Annual Bowls tournament will be held at Ararat Bowls Club on 25 March 2019 and this will attract more than 100 Probian players from across the region, some travelling from as far away as Nhill, Hopetoun and Warrnambool. For the safety of our members the club wished to purchase a defibrillator, however as a non-profit organisation it does not fund raise. To obtain sufficient funds the club applied for grants locally and were successful in getting monies from Ararat RSL Community Grants and Pitch Music Arts and Community Grants, this together with a member donation provided sufficient funds to purchase the machine. The defibrillator is portable and will be available at meetings and all outings. After a recent excursion to visit AME Systems, members attended a luncheon at Ararat RSL as a means to say thanks for their donation and to show off the new machine.
Being Halloween there were several ‘spirit appearances’ including Walter Lindrum (who told the group what a great Billiard player he was), Federici the ghost who haunts the Princess Theatre and Louisa Barrow, who was the mistress of Sir Redmond Barry, the judge who sentenced Ned Kelly to hang. She bore him four children but is not buried in the cemetery however her relatives arranged for a small plaque at the base of his memorial. There was even a surprise song from ‘Elvis’, who popped out from behind the Elvis Memorial and before you ask, no he isn’t buried here, in fact he never visited Australia. A great mix of entertainment and facts that were very educational. Many thanks went to the Melbourne Cemetery Trust for the great tour.
MARYVALE Maryvale Probus Club celebrated its 25th birthday in style. A recitation by a local poet was followed by the Club Executive singing a senior’s parody to the tune of Are You Lonesome Tonight. The cake was cut by newest life member, Pam Guy. Note the new president’s chain holder, made by club treasurer Charlie Tarran. This is an idea for other clubs when the chain comes to be too heavy for comfortable wear.
NORTH BALWYN North Balwyn Heights Probus Club members enjoyed a week away in August at Barham, Victoria, for the Murray Magic Tour. The group spent the week at the Riverside Motel and hosts Kristy-Lee and Clint arranged a tour each day. How relaxing and enjoyable to have breakfast then board the coach to be taken to a new location and a new experience each day complete with an entertaining and informative commentary by coach driver Clint. Home late in the afternoon ready for dinner, members enjoyed the luxury of no meal preparation, no cooking and no problems of navigation, of which we all experience from me to time. The bus tours offered a full and interesting wide range of tourist attractions including the Spanner Man, a cruise on a paddle steamer and a visit to the Swan Hill Historical Village plus more. Club members learned something new each day. It was lots of fun and there were interesting things to see and do. The club is very active and engages in a number of tours and day trip activities plus a wide range of special interest groups. Come and see what the club does as a guest. It meets at 10 am on the first Monday of the month at the Baptist Church Hall, 136 Doncaster Road, Balwyn North. For more information call us on 03 9859 2543 or 0418 171 906.
MENTONE COMBINED
KNOX COMBINED Can you think of a spookier way to spend Halloween night than a walk through the Melbourne Cemetery on Halloween? The Combined Probus Club of Knox ventured out after dark to the Melbourne Cemetery for a Halloween tour. Many members dressed in ‘spooky’ outfits as befitted the occasion, there were witches, devils, ghouls and ghosts. They spent one and a half hours visiting some of the more interesting graves hearing stories from guide Dr Celestina Sagazio about many of the people buried there and how they met their end.
Recently the Mentone Combined club arranged to have a first aid demonstration, held at its clubrooms. Using CPR and the Defibrillator which is located in the meeting room at the Mentone Hub. President Brian Chaplin OAM, secretary Rose Olsen and several committee members watched this excellent and informative demonstration. They firstly learnt resuscitation and then how to apply the defibrillator to the dummy used to demonstrate. The club felt members needed this information in case there was an emergency at any time. The demonstration was arranged by The Kingston City Council and was conducted by the Red Cross.
MOORLEIGH Members of the Probus Club of Moorleigh last year departed East Bentleigh for a visit to the MCG and National Sports Museum. The MCG is a magnificent stadium, recognised as one of the world’s finest sporting facilities. It can seat 100,000 people for sporting and entertainment events. In 1959 the evangelist Billy Graham attracted a record crowd of 130,000. Members learned much about the history of the ground and many interesting features, such as the 150th anniversary tapestry, the light towers, the record breaking six hit by Simon O’Donnell and the drop-in wickets.
The group visited the famous Long Room, the players’ changerooms, the coaches’ rooms and the media room, where some demonstrated their interviewing skills. Just as footy teams do, the group was able to walk up the entrance ramp and on to the hallowed turf - an experience not to be forgotten. After lunch, members were free to roam the National Sports Museum, a world class museum displaying an impressive exhibit of memorabilia from all sports.
SEVILLE The Seville Combined Probus Club celebrated its 25th birthday last year at Rose Cottage in Monbulk, Victoria. The lunch was enjoyed by all with Rose Cottage being a favourite place to eat.
SYNDAL Syndal Combined held a Melbourne Cup ‘themed meeting’ for their October Meeting. This included a special morning tea complete with champagne and strawberries, a ‘Fashions on the Field’ competition, and many cup sweepstakes. Winners of the Fashions competition were: Best Dressed Couple - Janelle and Trevor Biggs, Best Dressed Male - Graeme Baker, Best Dressed Female and Best Hat - Greta Crouch and Del Gilder.
WOORAYL In September, 34 members set out on a four day trip to Daylesford, travelling through Gisborne, Mt Macedon, Woodend, Kyneton and Trentham Falls. On arrival they were greeted by friendly hosts Mellissa and Michael at Central Springs Inn Daylesford (thanks to the advertisement in the Probian) who looked after the group so well making sure they enjoyed the stay. The weather was kind to as they enjoyed visiting this beautiful area having many opportunities for friendship, fellowship and fun.
KINGSBURY In October the Probus Club of Kingsbury celebrated its 23rd birthday at the Yarra Valley Country Club. The day started with a lovely lunch followed by The Four Fathers entertaining members with their harmony, with quite a bit of help from the audience. There were presentations of 10 and 20 year certificates to many members. A life membership was also presented to a lady who has been with the club since inception and has held many titles in that time.

club news Members were given a demonstration on the use of a fire blanket and a small fire extinguisher. They were then invited to practice using the equipment. All agreed it was a most valuable exercise.
The luncheon was held at the Canterbury International Hotel in Forest Hill and it was a big success: Santa attended, drew our raffles and entertained the crowd; Lexie provided very enjoyable music; both the function room and venue were beautiful with good food and service and a very good time was had by all.
Sailing from Copenhagen to St Petersburg - including visits to Berlin, Oslo, Stockholm, Tallum and Helsinki - a wonderful time was experienced by all who participated.
BENTLEIGH EAST
PAKENHAM EAST Members of Pakenham East Probus were delighted to welcome Australian classical pianist and composer Ambre Hammond to their October meeting. Her life story captivated the audience. Ambre has never attended school, high school or university. At age 11, she set a world record as the youngest person to achieve both the AMEB Associate and Licentiate Diplomas of Music in Piano, which she still holds. At age 16 she won an international piano competition and released her first CD and from there went on to perform around the world with an array of orchestras and ensembles. Through her long-term project called Girl Truck Piano, Ambre shares her passion for music with people, especially young children throughout schools, orphanages and communities. She has travelled solo through remote countries and outback Australia. Members were spell-bound as Ambre concluded her visit by playing one of her favourite classical pieces. Members offered thatnks to guest speaker co-ordinator Kath De La Rue for organising such an outstanding and memorable event.
MAFFRA LADIES The Maffra Ladies Probus Club was invited by the Maffra Fire Brigade to receive instruction on fire safety in the home.

Members of Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club gathered outside the Meeting Hall for a practice fire drill during its December 2018 meeting. The smiling faces are possibly due more to thoughts of our Christmas lunch at Southern Golf Club later the same day but the drill resulted in a great photo (above).
MOOROOLBARK Four members of the Mooroolbark Combined Probus Club addressed the gathering at the January general meeting, giving a short summary of their life before joining Probus. Einar Beckman, the latest member to join the club, gave a very entertaining talk about his journey from his homeland Iceland to Australia.
ASHBURTON Members of Ashburton Probus Club paid a visit to the very interesting century-old Mission for Seamen recently. The knitters in the club donated 35 beanies to be given to seamen who come from hot countries and obviously feel the chill of these latitudes. The knitters are still busy, ready for another bag of beanies next year.

Twenty-five of members of the Probus Club of Bentleigh East attended the Jewish Holocaust Centre (JHC) in late November 2018. The introduction by Lisa Phillips, Director of Education, was followed by a short film. This set the stage for the remainder of the visit Members split into three groups and toured the museum section of JHC under the direction of three guides. This gave them an overview of what exhibits were in the museum and members were all in agreement that they would come back again to get a better understanding of the stories behind some of these exhibits. The group returned to the auditorium and a holocaust survivor, Sarah Saaroni, aged 92, spoke to them about her life before, during and after the Second World War. Her graphic and eloquent talk was extremely moving for our members. Sarah said that her actions were based on necessity and were not courageous. Club members then went to a local restaurant, The Goat House, and enjoyed a great meal and attentive service. The discussion continued over lunch and into the afternoon on the highlights of the morning’s visit to the JHC.

This is one Mein exhibition GIPPSLAND Art Gallery is pleased to present the third exhibition of work by Annemieke Mein within her dedicated space at the Port of Sale. The new display features several major works drawn from private collections from across Victoria. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity for visitors to experience works rarely seen in public. Freedom (1986), a large three-panel work featuring butterflies, birds, flowers and other natural phenomenon features on the eastern wall. Impressive works such as Diving Bluebilled Duck (1992), Eastern Water Dragon (1979) and The Sheep Blowfly Life Cycle (1995) highlight Mein’s skill in depicting various flora and fauna. Each of the major works will be accompanied by supporting sketches and stitch-plans, which reveal insights into the skill and preparation that goes into each of Mein’s artworks.
Annemieke Mein’s textiles have been inspiring audiences in Gippsland and further afield for nearly 50 years. Her works are collected not just across Australia, but around the world. The dedicated space in Gippsland Art Gallery hosts regularly changing exhibitions, each with an emphasis on educational displays that reveal the methods and techniques in the process of creating a textile work.

Their volunteer effort speaks volumes AUSTRALIA’S favourite steam train, Puffing Billy, is one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. The story of the railway’s beginnings in 1900, its struggle to survive closure, the efforts of dedicated volunteers to keep it operating, and its grand return to Gembrook make for a fascinating talk. Don Horsburgh is the co-ordinator of the Puffing Billy Railway Visiting Speakers Panel, and over the past 20 years he has given more than 600 presentations to people from a range of clubs and organisations including Probus, Lions, Rotary and Church clubs, as well as organisations such as Retirement Villages, U3A, Men’s Sheds and senior citizens groups. While most of the speaking engagements are within 100km of Melbourne, Don has travelled as far as Orbost, Cobram, Bendigo, Creswick, Mansfield, Queenscliff and Shepparton. Other speakers include Alan Gray, who joined the Panel in 2009, and has given over 200 presentations, and Robert (“Smokey”) Dawson who has been an active railway volunteer for 57 years. In 2013, Robert was honoured to receive an Order of Australia Medal for services to Puffing Billy and Rotary. To arrange a Speaker Panel visit, simply gather a minimum of 25 people to hear

ON 18 October 2018, an Interest meeting was held with a view to forming a new Probus Club for Retirees in the Doncaster/Donvale area which will provide opportunities for having fun, enjoying the fellowship of others and forming new social friendships. Thirty-five strangers gathered together at the Templestowe Baptist Church to hear the history and benefits of being in a Probus club that is simple in structure, has minimal costs and is non-fundraising. At future monthly meetings, the members will listen to wonderful guest speakers on varied and interesting topics, enjoy fellowship at morning tea, and learn how to stay active by participating in a wide of activities, visiting local places of interest, travelling within Australia, and even exploring other countries in the world. It was amazing to witness new friendships developing, lots of laughter, as all started planning the club’s future. New members who volunteered to take on the important roles as members of the management committee were introduced by Past Probus South Pacific Chair Margaret Robinson to fellow members of the newly formed Probus Club. These volunteers will take on the responsibility of engaging the club membership by developing the opportunities for friendship, fellowship and fun through the wide range of social interaction and activities that will be planned and organised by the members themselves. Should you desire to join this fun group, just contact-Bernice Charity-on 9848 2564.

SINCE 2002 Stev-Computer, a small business in leafy Blackburn, a suburb of Melbourne has been quietly repairing and restoring old and dis-used computers, laptops and parts to be used again in overseas countries, as part of an aid program. Older working computers are donated and then stripped down, all personal data is removed and returned to the owner if required and then re-fitted with new hard drives and other parts and fully tested and packed ready for shipment. Finished computers are usually stored at a warehouse in Clayton ready to be packed and shipped. Cost of shipping is usually donated through many varied sources as are costs of replacement parts and components. Owner Steve Polgar explained that the more affluent a society becomes, the greater the “throw away” mentality that occurs, and many very good items are simply discarded in order to have the “latest” model. Our old computers were “virtual gold” to students in underdeveloped countries. Everyone is able to help either by giving old computers, donating funds for shipping, or just lending a hand to help

THE Bidet Shop customer Mabel suffers with arthritis and a painful back condition but has found a bidet has made the everyday task a much simpler. “It’s marvelous! I’ve always wanted a ‘paperless’ bidet in my bathroom and I wish I found it years ago!” Mabel said. “The bidet simply replaced the existing toilet seat and automatically cleaned without toilet paper. The friendly staff explained that the bidet toilet seat has many health benefits as well as the comfort factors of a heated seat and other features,” she said. The bidet can be used in two simple steps. Press the bottom/feminine wash button and the bidet provides a stream of warm water to clean thoroughly. Then with just the push of another button, warm air gently dries without the need for toilet paper. Mabel said that although The Bidet Shop offered to send out a brochure pack, she decided to order a bidet straight away. Well it arrived a few days later. She installed the seat herself easily and as she had been told, it fitted perfectly on her original toilet bowl. “It is the best investment I have made in my personal health and hygiene in years and no longer finds going to the toilet an issue”. “Give it a go!” she says. “I did and I couldn’t be happier”. For more information or to purchase call The Bidet Shop on 03 9081 0789. Vic Probian readers may qualify to have their Bidet fully funded. Please call us to ask how.

The magic of animal therapy Vets&Pets
Lort Smith’s Community Outreach Coordinator, Megan Nutbean.
The Lort Smith Pet Therapy program trains, assesses and approves volunteer-dog teams that visit hospitals, residential care services and aged care facilities. spiritual,” emphasises Ms Nutbean. The people Pet Therapy teams visit can often be at a particularly vulnerable point in their lives. Interacting with a dog - and their volunteer handler - at such times can be incredibly healing. “In some aged care facilities we have seen people with dementia, who haven’t spoken for months, start smiling again, patting and talking to the animals,” Ms Nutbean explains.
It’s these kinds of regular breakthroughs with the recipients of the Lort Smith Pet Therapy program which really make a difference to residents, patients and clients of the facilities they work with. Pet Therapy currently runs across 45 facilities in Melbourne and beyond, with additional facilities waiting to be part of the program. However, such life changing programs are only possible with the help of our
very special donors. Their generosity has enabled this rewarding program to thrive and will help it continue another thirty years into the future. Gifts in Will and Living Gifts are just a couple of ways people can help this program touch even more lives. If you have any questions about Gifts in Will, Living Gifts or our Pet Legacy program, call us on 03 9287 6430 or email bequests@ lortsmith.com for more information. 12411385-CG09-19
LORT Smith believes and promotes the benefits of the human-animal bond which goes beyond companionship. This bond refers to the strong positive interaction that exists between humans and animals - that special cohesive bond that enhances our quality of life. Lort Smith Pet Therapy program trains, assesses and approves volunteer-dog teams that visit hospitals, residential care services, aged care facilities, and a variety of other settings. The program, which has been running for around thirty years, aims to bring comfort and relief to people experiencing illness, pain, adversity and loneliness. Lort Smith’s Community Outreach Coordinator, Megan Nutbean, has been coordinating the program for three years. In 2018 the 100 volunteer-dog teams visited 23,000 people, providing over 2500 hours of Pet Therapy. In her work Ms Nutbean has seen firsthand how the program has transformed the lives of both the volunteers and the people they visit. “The positive impact of the humananimal bond is real and is backed by scientific data. The research validates the therapeutic effects of human-animal relationships. These benefits can be emotional, psychological, physical and
