So tomorrow some students will choose to skip school to protest about climate change. They say they want the government to stop the mining of coal and gas and push forward with renewables. The students have decided to meet at Peregian Beach Surf Club. I remember a time when protests were commonplace and street marches were the flavour of the day. Decades ago when I was at school we attended a number of protest street marches through Brisbane city and our teachers encouraged us to be politically active.Did governments listen? Maybe. Also congratulations goes to everyone involved in the Noosa Festival of Surfing for making it the great success that it was. ● - Margaret Maccoll Cover picture: Dave Gleeson, surfshots.com.au

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… HELD CAPTIVE: COURT CLAIM BY MARGARET MACCOLL Three people appeared in Maroochydore Courthouse on Monday to face charges after a 19-year-old Noosa Heads man told of being held captive for more than 48 hours at a bush camp on privately owned property at Eenie Creek about a kilometre from Noosa Civic shopping centre. The teenager fled the camp about 5am on Sunday and flagged down a motorist on Eenie Creek Road who took him to Noosa Hospital with bruising and lacerations. Police were contacted. They arrested three people at the camp site, set up a crime scene and seized items of property. 19-year-old Tewantin man Raven O'Hanlon was charged with deprivation of liberty and assault occasioning bodily harm in company. 48-year-old Tewantin man Michael

"We heard a few bangs. We think a car caught on fire." Neighbouring houses were evacuated and police held back a crowd of onlookers. Bones was taken by ambulance to hospital. It was about three hours before neighbours were allowed to return to their houses after firefighters tested for toxic fumes and gave the all clear. Fire investigators are determining the cause of the fire but are not treating it as suspicious. ●

Peregian Beach Surf Club to relocate the building into an area of greater coastal hazard risks. Following talks with the State peak body, Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ), it was agreed the campaign was causing unnecessary community division. In September 2018 SLSQ made an undertaking to become the permit holder (via its local branch), to end conjecture about relocation of the club". There has been no formal tenure of the site since last December and council has received approaches from community and environmental groups seeking space in the building. Under council's proposal the building tenure would comprise lifesaving functions delivered from the ground floor via a three year Trustee Permit to SLSQ and community activation of the top floor via a three year Trustee Permit from 1 July to a community group with a connection to marine or foreshore activities. ●

MAN SUFFERS BURNS IN BLAZE
Noosa Council will this month discuss its intention to call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for a suitable not-for-profit community group to occupy the top level of the Peregian Beach Surf Club, a move met with the launch of a petition of protest by community group Peregian Family and Friends. The community group says the top level of the clubhouse is being used for lifesaving training, social gatherings and functions and the inability to use half the surf club may risk SLSQ being unable to deliver its volunteer lifesaving services. Council's intention, which is contained in this month's Services and Organisation Committee meeting agenda, aims to find a suitable tenant for the building which is held in Trustee by council, for a period of up to three years and at an annual cost of $301.50 per year. Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club (NHSLSC) was issued annual permits by council since 2014 to occupy the premises with permits expiring in December 2018. During that time NHSLSC maintained voluntary lifesaving patrols, conducted a nipper program and undertook repairs and renovations and in 2016 began investigating options to redevelop the clubhouse. It continues to provide weekend lifesaving patrols and has re-established a nippers program. Council papers state: "A report to Council in August 2018 detailed a protracted campaign seeking support

House destroyed by fire.
Long term resident Raymond (Bones) Murray, 78, suffered burns to his legs during a fire which totally destroyed his Noosaville house Thursday afternoon. Bones as he is widely known was at home with his son who was visiting from Africa when the fire started in the garage at the front of the property. Neighbours quickly alerted Queensland Fire and Emergency Service after smelling smoke and then seeing it billowing from the garage. Noosa Heads station officer Matt Phillips said four fire units attended the blaze in Dolphin Crescent about 3.15pm and discovered the two men who had escaped out the back of the house. "We got our firefighters around the back to get them," he said. The family dog was also rescued unscathed but the cat has gone missing, he said. With the house well alight firefighters turned much of their attention to saving nearby properties and took heed of the neighbour's gas tanks which faced the burning building. "We were able to stop the fire from

COVER STORY Garry Maher. Photo: Dave Gleeson, Surfshots.
THE SHERLOCK HOLMES OF NOOSA BY RON LANE he book laying on the table was entitled Investigating Made Simple and on the third page, the author, Garry Maher made two simple statements; statements telling me that here indeed was a man of integrity; but above all a man whose answer to a question would always be straight to the point. "What I have learned over nearly forty years about the art of investigating could fill a book. What I have yet to learn about the art of investigating could fill a library." These statements also made me aware that the author was a man with a very
T
inquisitive mind and a person who loved a challenge. Now at the age of 76 years with a career embracing family life, police work, study, teaching, writing and finally the practice and study of martial arts he can be described as someone who grabbed life with both hands and held on for the ride. Born in Darlinghurst Sydney in 1943 Garry was educated at Saint Partricks Christian Brothers College but as a result of his father being badly injured in an accident his education came to an abrupt end in the intermediate year. Then in 1965 with his family now living in Canberra he made the decision to join the Canberra Police Force. The training involved two months at
the Police College then 12 months as a probationary constable. "During those 12 months," said Garry with a grin, "I saluted everything that moved and polished everything that didn't. After being accepted I was partnered with a senior officer in what was referred to as the Buddy System: I was fortunate enough to be paired with very good men and women which meant I was learning all the time.'' In 1966 Garry met a young public servant named Bernadette who worked for the Department of Army in Canberra. They started dating and married in 1970 and soon became the proud parents of a son who they named Dominic. ''After leaving high school
Dominic chose teaching as a profession and this saw him accepting a position on the staff at Nudgee College in Queensland. But now," said Garry, "he lives in Denmark and is happily married with three children. It's a long way away but happily we all keep in close touch." After five years he was transferred to the CIB (Criminal Investigation Branch) and appointed to detective rank and from then "the investigative work was full on." After some time he was sent to Russell Street, Melbourne for a wider range of work experience in the field of criminal investigation; it was then on to Saint Kilda Police Academy for a close look at their system.

environment. It was not long after the Serpico scandal, a scandal that came about when a young New York detective named Frank Serpico blew the whistle on corruption in the NYPD and all hell broke loose. I also couldn't help but notice that all the detectives wore guns; some on their hips and some in shoulder and ankle holsters. It was certainly a different atmosphere." After years of teaching and a wealth of experience Garry realized that he had collected a massive pile of notes, enough maybe to write a book. The seed was planted and in 2004 the first edition hit the shelves. Now in its fifth edition the demand is still good. But in 2007 the inevitable happened; Garry Maher former Detective Senior Sergeant, corporate trainer, academic and author of a Government endorsed textbook, hit that brick wall known as retirement. "Early one morning while sitting at a table at Gibson's Cafe enjoying a coffee it hit me; I was 64 retired and at 103 kg was grossly overweight, with absolutely nothing planned. However my thoughts were being repeatedly interrupted by noises coming from the karate club situated on the floor above. My investigative mind took control and I went for a look. As I walked up the stairs I was wondering what a karate club could possibly offer a 64 year old overweight retiree with a heart problem. "I quickly discovered it was a Karate and Fitness Institute. A handshake with someone called a sensei (teacher) a good 20 minute discussion with management
staff and I was hooked; I had discovered something that was not only a sport but as I was soon to learn a way of life." The massive mental void that Garry had unintentionally stumbled into was about to vanish. Four years after what can only be described as some very intense training sessions Garry (then down to 84kg and fit)stood in front of his sensei to sip the traditional ceremonial glass of Saki and received his coveted Black Belt; a belt which is awarded after a grading conducted over a period of two days. "Sometimes I would train three times during the week then go again on Saturday morning. I did this because I really wanted to earn my black belt and at the end of the four years I felt I had. Also at this stage Bernadette had," he said with a smile, "accepted the fact that she was on the way to becoming a karate widow." Over the years Garry has won several medals some at state level competing at tournaments in the Masters Kata division; something that has given him a sense of pride. In an effort to study karate more in depth, Garry applied to the Australian Sports Academy to attend special and very intense courses. He was accepted and successful. This enabled him to teach Advanced Skills of Martial Arts. From the sometimes dark world of detective work where he became involved with criminals of all levels, to the life in the dojo where boys and girls of six could be in his care was indeed a complete turn- about. ''It is
AFP Deputy Commissioner Mike Phelan presents Garry Maher with the National Police Service Medal at AFP headquarters, Canberra in 2015. not only karate that we teach but also good manners and being respectful to their sensei, family and friends. Also for the older kids it gives us the opportunity to get them off the streets and most important (as an ex-cop) away from the world of the drugs and the Cowards Punch. Indeed a very gratifying step in life." To lead a life of such extremes requires a man of determination, fortitude and above all an open mind. Such a man is Garry Maher. During his journey through life both as a detective and an academic he has received various awards and amongst those were; National Police Service Medal, the associate membership of the International Association of Chiefs of Police Washington D.C.U.S.and a commendation from the Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory. Proud to say Garry, is One of our People. â—?

But at 43 the then Senior Sergeant Garry Maher experienced a setback when he suffered a mild heart attack. This was eventually to result in major surgery requiring a quadruple by-pass. "I ended up with a chest full of by-passes; more than the Bruce Highway", he said laughing. The convalescence went well but on returning to his Canberra base he decided to resign. "I had eighteen good years in the force, eighteen years of doing something that I loved. Following my resignation I decided it was time to do something about my education, so I enrolled at the University of Canberra and obtained a degree in Adult Education and a Diploma in Technical and Further Education." However while at University an incident occurred that was to have a big influence on Garrys future career. ''The Taxation Department requested the Uni to run professional courses for Taxation Education and because of my background I was invited to run the course. Working in the Center for Professional and Vocational Education (known as PAVE) as an Associate Director and Visiting Scholar, I was basically required to teach Taxation Agents the principals of investigative techniques.'' This was to be the start of what was to become a very successful new and gratifying career. For in the years ahead he would mentor numerous police, military and other government educators in the development of their respective "internal investigation and professional development training programs." Also down through the years, to further his studies and research he would take it upon himself to visit such places as United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe, United States and Canada. "Perhaps one experience that was different occurred when a course student from Papua New Guinea (PNG) expressed a desire for me to look at becoming the author of courses to suit the New Guinea Constabulary. For this project I worked on a fly in fly out basis for several weeks. It was a totally different culture and resulted in me visiting such places as Mt Hagen and Ok Tedi, site of the huge gold and copper mine. Then in 1998 we moved to Noosa and despite the move I was still able to run my business as all I needed was a phone, fax and an airport. It was at this stage that through my Uni connections I was able to participate in courses entitled Cultural Diversity and Communication. This was a New York Police Department. (NYPD) course based in New York City. As a result I visited New York and once again found myself in a totally different

SHORT TERM LETS IN CONTENTION BY MARGARET MACCOLL Shot term accommodation was the hot topic of discussion when Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie headed a community meeting on the new Noosa Plan at Peregian Beach on Sunday. Cr Wilkie told residents the new plan aimed to better manage short-term accommodation (STA) with the area east of David Low Way to be designated for STAs and that west of the David Low Way to be considered outside the STA area. The changes will enable council to better regulate the numbers of tenants and cars and disturbances. Party houses will be banned from the shire. "This is a mechanism for regulation,"
he said. "At the moment council has no mechanism to regulate these operations." This significant change to the Noosa plan will require a property owner on the west of the highway to apply to council for a material change of use to short-term lease their property. When asked the cost of the process a council officer at the meeting said a cost had not yet been set as the change was still a proposal.Glen from Holiday Homes of Noosa told the meeting his business managed a number of holiday homes in Peregian and Marcus beaches with about half east of David Low Way and half west of the motorway. "A big chunk of people will be effected," he said. He asked council if the basis for the division line being the roadway was
based on the numbers of complaints but the number of complaints could not be provided. Cr Wilkie said property owners who rented out a room while remaining in the house would be regarded as operating a home business and not be affected by the proposed changes. He said statistics showed there was less impact on the neighbourhood in terms of noise and extra cars in these types of rentals compared to those when a whole house was rented. "We've found when the owner is onsite it's better managed," he said. The meeting was told no proposed amendments are set in stone. All are open to comment and all submissions will be properly considered. Residents have until 20 May to make submissions to council on the new Noosa

SEAHORSE RESCUED FROM SUNSHINE BEACH BY ABBEY CANNAN Last week, Noosa locals Shelley and David Tucker found a seahorse washed up on Sunshine Beach. The couple tried to put the seahorse back into the ocean but the swell kept pushing it back onto the beach. "We were walking along Sunshine Beach and found this little majestic fella," David said. "We rushed him off to Sea Life Mooloolaba. He is still doing okay but he must have been buggered from getting to tossed around after Tropical Cyclone Oma. What a magical place we live in." ●

UNIQUE TROPHIES BY ABBEY CANNAN
Labor candidate for Wide Bay Jason Scanes

Noosa Surf Art Expo organiser and celebrated surf artist Owen Cavanagh created unique trophies for the Noosa Festival of Surfing this year. Owen's favourite of all the trophies he created was for the winners of the World Surf League Longboarding Championships, which he made out of pieces of local hardwood from his father's farm. "I love seeing the look on surfers faces when they see the trophy. It's really cool that they get to take a piece of Noosa home with them," Owen said. The fifth annual Noosa Surf Art Expo featured more than 40 local artists and
a series of live art demonstrations and competitions and was held for the duration of the Noosa Festival of Surfing at Heads of Noosa Brewing Co. "The biggest thing at the exhibition this year was the variety of talented artists we have from the Sunshine Coast," Owen said. Among them was artist Matt James whose feature piece of a shark was made out of recycled bolts and pieces . The Surf Art Expo raised more than $800 for two charities, Surf Rider Foundation Sunshine Coast and The Board Meeting Surf Charity, with funds raised from a gold coin donation upon entry. For more of Owens art visit www.solearte.com.au. â—?
Labor candidate for Wide Bay Jason Scanes was on the campaign trail last week in Noosa to meet and greet local residents and promote his aim to listen to the people and fight for what they want in Canberra. Fighting is something the Scanes knows a thing or two about, having spent 19 years with the Defence Force. "I've fought in Afghanistan and the Middle East and I know what it was to survive," he said. "I take my orders from the people. That's my job. I think some of the politicians have lost that focus." Mr Scanes said not being a marginal seat meant Wide Bay received little support and needed someone able to drive significant change. He believes he is the man for the job after having secured funding for community projects and advocated for foreign veterans and interpreters who assisted Australian forces in combat. He established the charity Forsaken Fighters Australia to assist interpreters left behind after the conflict. After retiring from the Defence Force five years ago Mr Scanes, who grew up in Dubbo, moved to Maryborough where he lives with his wife and three children. He completed several university qualifications including a Masters in Business and has been CEO of a hospitality business employing more than 70 staff. â—?

LIFESAVERS MIX TV SHOWS WITH LIFE BY MARGARET MACCOLL The many recent accomplishments of Noosa Heads Surf Life Savers were highlighted at its sponsors breakfast last Friday following a busy summer season which saw life savers rescue about 70 people when the Oma cyclone whipped up the seas and treat about 150 people for blue bottle stings. Year 9 Good Shepherd Lutheran College student Jed Hamblin was recognised for his selection as the lifesavers' lifesaver out of 150 participants in the recent nippers camp.
Jed was also acknowledged for his part in a mass rescue, and for his work with nippers he was presented with the President's medal. Tourism Noosa CEO Steve McPharlin praised the supporters club for taking the Master Chef program on board when bad weather prevented its screening from proceeding as planned on the beach. "It was a great opportunity for Noosa," he said. The program which is broadcast to 120 countries was filmed in Noosa after Queensland Tourism paid creators of the
show, the Endermol group, for the event to occur, he said.Training and education officer Jonathan Donnelly told guests how his engagement of 40 local schools had resulted in about 700 students a week engaging in surf education, learning skills including bronze medallion, surf rescue, first aid and CPR. Also joining the lifesavers was exchange student Rodrigo De Aluso Santana from Madrid.Jonathan said one student had recently used the skills he was taught to give CPR to a person.
"That person is alive today because of that," he said. Club president Ross Fisher thanked new and continuing sponsors for their support without which the club could not operate as it does and paid tribute to the new nippers program operating at Peregian Beach and the parents supporting it. ●

SUNNY’S HOPES FOR A SMART PUP TO HELP OUT BY MARGARET MACCOLL Sunny Rose Monie is just as her name suggests a beautiful, happy and sunny girl who was born in 2008 with a chromosome translocation, a type of abnormal change in the structure of a chromosome that occurs when a part of one chromosome breaks off and sticks to another chromosome. Sunny's type of chromosome translocation is so unique her mother Karina Rune said they have yet to find another person in the world with exactly the same condition. The effect of it means Sunny cannot talk or walk, has both hearing and vision impairment and uncontrolled epilepsy with almost daily seizures which often occur in the early hours of the morning when everyone is asleep. Sunny has been approved to have a Smart Pup, a dog trained to recognise Sunny's seizures and seek help as well as providing friendship and companionship for Sunny who loves dogs. Karina believes the Smart Pup will be "life saving" for Sunny. "She is non-verbal. The dog can detect her seizures, be with her," she said. "Dogs can sense she is someone who needs to be looked after." The single mother of three is throwing herself into fundraising over the next 12 months in order to meet the $20,000 amount needed to train and place a Smart Pup dog.
Sunny Rose Monie with mum Karina Rune. She will be participating in the Mooloolaba Triathlon this weekend and the Noosa Tri later in the year. While Karina has found it difficult to fit in training she is determined to complete the event to help her daughter. Karina said Sunny was well known to the community with clubs such as Rotary and Lions having helped make life easier for the family over the years through the provision of equipment. Sunny's story of survival is miraculous. Having spent three years in palliative care when very young Sunny beat the odds and
is now thriving, attending school and going to the beach on weekends with her mum and little brother who attended nippers until it finished last week for the season. To help raise money for a Smart Pup for Sunny donations can be made to the organisation, a not-for-profit and tax deductible recipient. You can donate via the Smart Pups Westpac account BSB: 034198 Account: 415185 Transaction Reference: Sunny Rose Monie or donate at www.smartpups.org. au. and reference Sunny in the 'In honor of ' box. ●

A community leadership conference in Noosa brought women of diverse backgrounds together to catalyse new ideas around gender equality. The conference was held at The J by the Women Initiating New Directions Organisation (WINDO) as part of the International Women's Week Festival on Wednesday 6 March. The conference theme of 'When Sleeping Women Wake, Mountains Move' featured expert speakers from across the region discussing the topics of leadership, education, social enterprise, financial empowerment, inclusivity, health, arts and culture. Artist and Gubbi-Gubbi/ Wakka-Wakka woman Hope O'Chin talked about her life and the inequalities she faced being forced to grow up in a mission. "When people would compare growing up in a boarding school to my experience growing up in a mission I would tell them 'The difference is you are free, we have no rights'," she said. "We learnt to make-do with what we had and what was expected of us." "The most important part of being a woman is knowing that we are a point of existence on the continuum of life." Other guest speakers at the event included Dr. Ali Black, Academic and internationally recognised Researcher of women's lived experiences at University of the Sunshine Coast, Dr Nova Evans and Sonia Goodwin, Co-Founders of Sunny Street healthcare for the homeless, Paula Tura, Writer, Artist and Educator, Jazmyn Smith, Filmmaker and Photographer, and Alicia Sharples, Artist and Filmmaker. ●
Social women's network Life Beyond 30 creator Wendy Wilson has set a goal to get 30 people to give blood in Noosa during the first week of April. Wendy said the campaign is part of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service campaign called RED 25 Unite to Save Lives. "They are uniting with groups and organisations like ours to encourage people to give blood, the aim is that between us, 25 per cent of the blood donations needed in Australia will come from groups and organisations," she said. "Life Beyond 30's goal is to make people aware of the statistics and encourage discussion around blood donation and to get 30 people booking in to give blood because of our campaign, using the LB30 code. "It's not as easy as you might think to get people to give blood. Fifty per cent of the population can't and out of the 50 per cent that are left only 3 per cent actually give blood. People also don't seem to be aware that blood has a shelf life of less than 45 days, so we need a constant supply." To register to give blood, book online, using "LB30 Network" for the Red25 Organisation at www.donateblood.com.au/ red25. The Red Cross blood donation bus is in Tewantin on Diyan Street on the following dates in April. Monday 1, 7am-2pm, Tuesday 2, 11:30am-6pm, Wednesday 3, 10:30am-3:30pm, Thursday 4, 11:30am6pm, Friday 5, 7am-1pm, Saturday 6, 8am1pm. ●

LOWDOWN ON THE POWER STATUS Again travelling through your area, I took time to catch up with the debate about climate and energy in your columns. Well done, definitely more balanced and informative than in many of the capital city newspapers. Our best approach in this matter is to play our part in line with our contribution to global emissions and be very careful about the economic downside of not using our high quality coal resources, and, for that matter, our uranium resources. The recent announcements by the Morrison Government are significant in terms of medium and longer term implications. The proposals for Snowy 2.0 and the Marinus link with Tasmania do suggest a recognition that coal power is on the way out here in the longer term, for political reasons, not for fundamental strategic reasons. Through these proposals we may be stumbling to a politically workable position with renewables and storage, but with coal power stations running quietly in the background as key baseload providers for many years. Queensland coal power availability is significant and any premature closures could be disastrous for consumers here, and interstate. Costs and reliability are continuing big issues and can’t be taken for granted. And Snowy 2.0 and the Marinus link will inevitably have timing, engineering and financial challenges before we see them in action (if they proceed). Grandiose ambitions about renewables need to be tempered by reality. We already have very major investments in the pipeline. The recent ANU report of 8 February concluded that we will reach our 2030 emissions reduction target by 2025 because of our current headlong investment rush to renewables. We should remember that (1) we are a very minor contributor to global emissions, (2) we are well on the way to meeting our (non-binding) obligations, (3) we are already becoming heavily invested in renewables and (4) many of the ‘big players’ are not making much effort to meet their obligations. Keep bringing the facts out, and relax a bit, please. Denis Ives, Wakerley
SHORT TERM LET UPSETS The proposed Noosa Plan regarding short term holiday letting has upset residents from both sides of the dividing zone. How callous for council to admit that some residents are suffering and have to be protected from the high impact of noisy short term lets, while those on the coastal strips are now considered non-residential areas! A just plan would be to allow everyone
LENSCAPE
Leanne Airey captured this juvenile Kookaburra on camera, as it was taking a peek at her while she was sitting on her verandah in the Pomona countryside. If you have a photo you'd like to see in Lenscape please email to newsdesk@ noosatoday.com.au the opportunity to holiday let their home but with strict rules regarding numbers. The demographics of all residential areas must be respected equally by allowing only a genuine nuclear family (two adults and their children only) to holiday let a home. No guests or visitors. This would immediately alleviate all problems associated with holiday lets (noise, rubbish, traffic, parking) and is easy to police. If an “extended“ family needs to holiday together for a so called “family gathering“, they can go stay at a campsite or a resort which is designed to cater to large groups and is professionally managed on-site to control the resultant noise and traffic impact. Name withheld, Noosa Heads

EASY MONEY The current debate on B & B’s has become very complicated and completely out of touch, so let’s keep it simple and bring back some commonsense to it. Any attempt by Noosa Council (or any other council for that matter) to benefit from
home owners is nothing but a vile grab for cash and a desperate need for easy money. It needs to be remembered that home owners paid extra money to be living in this idyllic part of the world and therefore should be entitled to use their properties as they please, as long as it doesn’t infringe on other property owners’ peace and privacy. Any party houses that infringe on neighbours become a ‘law and order problem’ that should be dealt with appropriately. There is already a ‘three strike and you’re out’ rule in the system, that should be strictly implemented by police and councils working closely together, with any cost charged to the offending owner. The puerile argument from Mr Wellington that those extra tourists are a burden on Noosa’s infrastructure is highly compensated by their large financial injection into the local economy, and input on our tourism and hospitality sector. Noosa council, keep away from home owners’ pockets, or you will regret it at the next council election. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale
FOR A LIVING An expert is someone who does what they do for a living. They have a vested interest in doing the job well and not making mistakes. An amateur is someone who does the same thing for enjoyment. They do not have to get
it right, just enjoy the activity. This is why we respect expert or professional athletes, sportspeople, artists, and medical practitioners. It is why we take our cars to licensed mechanics instead of the nice old guy at the end of the street if we have something important to fix. Unhappy Janet (7 March) claims to have done extensive secondary research to understand global warming. I suggest that she has done a modicum of selective research. It is really impossible to have researched the literature on global warming and not come to the conclusion that man-caused global warming is happening and is a threat to our civilisation as much as an incoming, dinosaur-extinction sized meteor. Janet, as the rest of us corresponding in this paper, are amateurs. We all have to refer to experts. Janet has referred to seven per cent of the experts with whom she agrees and another half dozen or so amateurs who love to shed doubt on this serious issue. The rest of us have put trust in the 97 per cent (not 75 per cent, Janet) who make a living out of understanding climate cycles and reporting on what they find. You would have to be extremely biased to not understand that climate scientists have already considered all of the furphies that Janet raised. With respect, Janet would have had to work hard to avoid the literature from the 97 per cent. Yes, the sun keeps the Earth warm, but in its warming cycle, it only contributes 15 per cent of the warming we have experienced over the past 100 years. The rest is clearly and uncontroversially due to increased levels of CO2. CO2 is exacerbating the natural cycles, not the other way around. One would have to be extraordinarily one-eyed to not notice that renewable energy is far cheaper, faster to install, employs more workers, is more reliable, is better for our economy, and is less a threat to our environment than any fossil fuel power. Environmentalists AND economists are the main objectors to new coal power stations in NSW. The economic ruination of Australia will lie with further investment in coal or other fossil fuels. Sorry, Janet. That must really make you unhappy. A mini ice age has been predicted for decades and is complete nonsense. Even if a mini ice age were to occur it might set back global warming by 15 years over the course of the next 100 years. We will all still suffer the consequences of climate disruption. Get out and support our children when they strike again on 15 March. Then, plan to make climate disruption an election issue. Steve Hall, Cooroy

50 Hilton Terrace.
ICONIC DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY BY ABBEY CANNAN THIS property at 50 Hilton Terrace is one of the “last men standing” for redevelopment in the riverside precinct of Noosa. The property has been in the same family’s hands for over half a century. Garwoods Estate Agent, David has copies of the original title deeds from 1961 with the area in perches, and dimensions in links and chains. The home is very sound, despite its age, having been re-roofed and kept up to date with maintenance, and basically consists of three bedrooms plus a small study, one bathroom as well as living and kitchen areas. It has years of life left in it and will continue to provide a holding income should you be taking a longerterm view to realising the property’s full potential. It is currently rented on a periodic tenancy but Garwoods Estate Agents have no doubt that they can keep it rented for you on a permanent lease should you prefer. This is likely a once in a lifetime opportunity now to acquire such a site, as all other similar properties have now been developed. There has been extensive gentrification of this area as the value of its proximity and amenity was finally realised. Hilton Esplanade has long been the wealthy cousin, but magnificent homes are now being created on Hilton Terrace, and there is nothing left in land of this quality in this area. The proof is there to be seen in the sales data, and this property offers the best opportunity in some time, a corner double site with two street frontages, but with the strong possibility to reverse the access from Hilton Terrace to the preferred Sydney St side, by virtue of a boundary re-alignment or lot re-configuration. Both lots can have river views, and the land is perfectly flat. As currently set out, both blocks front to Hilton Terrace and are long and skinny. David Garwood said that the obvious thing to do is to affect a lot re-configuration (previously known as a boundary realignment) and turn the two skinny ones into two almost square lots and with the
Garwoods Estate Agents, Theodora and David Garwood.
50 Hilton Terrace, Tewantin. added bonus of frontage being to Sydney Street. Council have indicated they would look favourably upon this. For scheduled open houses, David will be conducting them in the grounds, and for those who are serious and wish to take it further, an internal inspection of the home can be arranged. Demand for this type of offering is strong, so don’t delay register your interest with David.
Map of 50 Hilton Terrace. ABOUT GARWOODS ESTATE AGENTS Garwoods Estate Agents opened in February 2017 and was established by long-time Noosa locals David and Theodora Garwood. NOOSA TODAY 23
WHAT’S ON JAZZ LIKE IT WAS The very popular Braben Jenner Hot Five will be performing with passion, skill and respect for the originals when they play for Noosa Jazz Club at The J on Saturday 16 March. The band plays the music of early 20th century America including the ragtime of Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller, the great masters of the piano, and the hot jazz of Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Dodds, King Oliver, Bix Beikderbecke
and Duke Ellington. The band comprises Andy Jenner on clarinet, soprano and baritone sax, John Braben on trumpet, Jo Bloomfield on piano and Peter Freeman on double bass. Wally Furst recently retired from playing and on this occasion John Withers has taken the banjo seat. Together, they will take guests back in time to where it all started in the early days of jazz, pre-1925, with ragtime piano, blues and the jazz of early New Orleans. These are the roots of jazz and will be a refreshing change. ●
GET YOUR BLUES ON AT THE IMPERIAL Be in The Bunker at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Friday 22 March when the fabulous Blues Arcadia take to the stage, kicking off their Carnival Of Fools national tour and supported by folk/ country/blues songwriter and musician Danny Widdicombe. In Cameron's unique and powerful soloing style you will hear his passion for Flamenco and Latin music, while Miranda adds her strong version of La Pompe (rhythm) and soloing style honed while living in Paris and performing alongside some of the best in the Gypsy Jazz genre. Palomino III take up the grittier, rowdier spaces of traditional Roots, Rockabilly and Americana styles. Think Outlaw meets Country Sweetheart, Palomino
Gian.
Chicken on a stick. III will bring an energetic addition to the stage. Gian got a head start musically as the youngest muso in a family committed to the musical way of life. Accomplished on
the piano, guitar, ukulele, harmonica and loop, Gian busies himself writing and creating new material, forever crusading to extend his sound into a greater visual and audible realm. â—?

WHEN DANCE MIMICS ART Neo Vida's project Control performed at The J in 2018 was a brilliantly authentic drama presented in contemporary dance sequences. It was a story based performance supported by background videos to help viewers understand the stories behind the dance choreographies. Neo Vida's upcoming production Voyage uses well known paintings as the background to their dance interpretations. The concept of "Voyage" translates the subject matter or narrative content of varied paintings into an expression of dance choreographies. The paintings are the inspiration and storyline for the production. Costumes and characters within the dance will evoke the figures, landscapes and emotions in the paintings and will faithfully refer to the textures and colours of the chosen artwork. By celebrating painters and combining the definitions of artists across media and performance art, Neo Vida's performance of Voyage has begun. This event will promote the growth of Neo Vida as an independent dance company and will showcase local talent. Voyage will be performed by Neo Vida Dance Company on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 April at 6.30pm at The J Theatre, 60 Noosa Drive, Noosa Junction. Tickets $30 adult, $25 pensioner, senior and students, $20 children 12 and under. Visit www.thej.com.au or phone 5329 6560. â—?

AWESOME FINALS EFFORT BY JUNIORS U13 Storm were the sole team to make the grand finals this year when they played against Flinders Jade. We lost the toss and Flinders chose to bat which was great because we were keen to bowl. A superb bowling and fielding effort from all players saw us restrict a classy Flinders batting team to 5/132. Lilly Baker bowled a beautiful delivery to get one of the openers early, Ethan Slaney finished off with some excellent bowling at the death taking 3 wickets, through a catch to Andy Kelly and also clean bowling 2 batsmen in the last over. A run out on the final ball of the innings from a throw in the deep by Finn Mayo and collected by Ethan was a nice way to finish the Flinders innings. Finn and Harry Caspers started well,
slow and steady as planned. The bowling from Flinders was excellent but at the halfway mark at drinks we were 0/54 with a few retired batsmen back in the shed (Flinders had been 1/47 at their drinks break). Unfortunately the drinks break broke our momentum a little and for the following few overs it was tough to get runs. At the 20 over mark the message went out that it was time to get going. The players responded but as a result the wickets started to fall. It came down to the last over needing 14 off it with 1 wicket in hand but unfortunately we fell just 12 runs short. Top scorer was Ethan 27*, Mack Frey got us back in the game with a superb knock of 17 off 16, Finn 15, Tom Harmer (c) 14, Luke Lee 13, & Harry 11.

He has worked at the Hyatt Coolum Resort, with Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Sports Physio Clinics. Invited and worked for many elite athlete groups i.e. Australian Wallabies, Olympic and Paralympic Swimmers. In more recent years Clint has now included more subtle styles of treatment. He is a gifted practitioner in addressing “challenges we might encounter, tightness in necks, shoulders, lower back/hip pain are common issues. As well as massage, Clint offers the ‘fine tuning’ of Energy Healing, Orion /Chiron Healing, Reiki, and Chakra balancing. Those familiar with the benefits of massage on the physical and mental space can add to that feeling of ‘surrender’. Energy Healing can increase the benefit of massage, by helping the patient acknowledge the tension / stress on a deeper level, often releasing its ‘hold’. Sessions can be tailored to suit each individual’s needs. Often stress and anxiety become a physical tension within the muscular system. Modern New Age writers, scientists, practitioners, even mystics from the past acknowledge stress and tension become almost infused within our cells / physical body. The human body will restore itself more often than not, a good practitioner just helps that process.

Both the TNT First Grade and Fourth Grade sides finished second on the premiership ladders and will be playing their two-day semi-finals next weekend at Tewantin. First Grade will be at Read Park playing Glasshouse whilst the top team, Caboolture will play Gympie who moved into fourth position with their win over TNT last weekend. Fourths should be at Dale Officer Oval playing third placed Palmwoods Black. The other Palmwoods side (Red) finished first and will be at home for the match. Both the Seconds and Thirds lost their last fixture matches and miss out on the finals. However, there were some very good performances from these teams during the season and with a number of junior players moving into senior ranks later this year, and some early-retired players returning there is optimism for the next season. Some years ago, a sports journalist wrote a book entitled "The Habit of Winning". It included separate chapters on such subjects as attitude, self-discipline, training and so on. All the players and supporters of the Tewantin-Noosa Cricket Club believe that the First Grade side can again regain this habit of winning in their match on Saturday and Sunday. They have the bowling attack, batting skills and loads of experience but it will all need to come together to ensure the win against a strong Glasshouse side. Last Saturday the Firsts lost to Gympie in
TNT captain, Jacob Dennien hitting out against Gympie last Saturday. a match that they should have won but with their top five scores all in the 20s, the total fell 10 runs short of that required. To win the semi-final, scores of 40s, 50s, 60s and more will be needed by the top batsmen and backed up by the bowlers and fielders. FOURTHS on the other hand are really displaying their "Habit of Winning". Last Saturday after dismissing Burpengary for 47 on Day 1, they batted all day to register their top score of the season with 7 for 341. Top scorers were Brian Lee 88, Shane Gesell 53, youngster Jack Saunders 50 no and Joe Jurisevic and Craig Moore both with 32. They will take this form into the semi-finals and should give the premiership a real good shake. Players, past players and supporters wish both teams all the best as they take the field next Saturday wearing the club colours with pride. It is hoped that many supporters and locals will attend the matches and cheer on the boys. First Grade will commence at 10.30am and Fourths at 12.30pm. â—?

These great bunch of players did the club very proud today. They gave their best and were very gracious in defeat, accepting their runners up medals with pride. Brian Lee and I are proud to be their coaches no more so when the umpire went out of his way to make a speech at the presentation about how both teams played in a highly competitive way but more importantly played the game in the Spirit of Cricket. Congratulations to Flinders Jade, we simply got beaten by a better team on the day. Thanks to all the TNT supporters who came down to support us, including some very proud grandparents. The support really lifted the team, I'm pretty sure we outnumbered Flinders! A massive thanks also to Deon Baker for scoring. â—?

LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
Brazil’s Chloe Calmon styling at Castaways.

Nic Jones capturing the spirit of the Noosa Festival.
KUDOS GOES OUT TO SURF FESTIVAL World tour longboarding returned to Noosa last week with a whimper rather than a bang, when the remnants of the three-weeklong Oma swell finally disappeared just as the Noosa Longboard Open got underway. That's competition surfing, of course - you have to take the bad with the good but it was interesting to see Sunday's finals decided in pretty ordinary beach breaks at Castaways. The last time that happened was 20 years ago when Joel Tudor took out the Noosa Pro at the 1999 Breaka Festival of Surfing in onshore puffers, which goes to show that class will always win out. And that was certainly the case as the tide at Castaways held up just long enough for the men's and women's finals. However, putting the locals hat on, I think we would have seen quite different results if finals day had been held at First Point. True masters of the point, Josh Constable and Harrison Roach bowed out in the quarters and semis respectively, despite putting in beautiful performances on their logs in fickle conditions that favoured performance boards. In Harry's case, he would have won any heat in the event with his two excellent scores, except the one where Florida's Justin Quintal defied gravity on his forehand on lefts that seemed to run for only him. Not since CJ Nelson have I seen a surfer who can only be described as a heavyweight in a field of flyweights work the nose so deftly and critically. But while we're still talking local, big ups to Nic Brewer for a top effort, and to Nic Jones and Emily Lethbridge for surfing beautifully through to their quarter-final finishes. Just a shame we ended up without a Noosa rep in either final. Oh, and if you caught any of the event webcast, also a brilliant effort from Sam and the crew at our local FreshAir broadcast unit, who managed the transitions to secondary locations almost seamlessly. I thought Justin Quintal might have already peaked with his superhuman effort to beat Harrison Roach, but he pulled out all the stops to beat reigning world champion Steven Sawyer in what was essentially a battle between the far ends of the World Surf League judging criteria. South African Stevie Sawyer represents the performance end of the spectrum, a snappy style we don't see that often in Noosa, whereas Quintal is the quintessential stylemaster. Stevie surfs fast and furious and is undoubtedly fun to watch, but me, I'll take style any day of the week. And it was style that won the day in noosatoday.com.au
the women's final too, with Brazil's Chloe Calmon really showing finesse on the longer-running lefts while Hawaii's former world and Noosa champ Honolua Blomfield struggled to find her rhythm. The debut WSL Noosa Longboard Open capped another great Noosa Festival, one that I enjoyed from a comfortable seat in the bar, rather than from the trenches. Well done, Noosa Mal Club and World Surfaris, and well done all of our 2019 division champions. And finally, on that note, last week I made a caption booboo when I credited California's Tommy Coleman with a nice reverse run. In fact the photo was of Noosa's own under 15 maestro Landen Smales, who finished third in that division. Sorry Landen. About 30 years ago when our family was young, we used to spend a bit of time at the old Orchid Beach Resort on Fraser Island, a crazy collection of bars and bungalows on their way to falling off an eroding sand cliff, which in time they did. The resort also had a crazy collection of local characters who sat around thrashing their livers when they weren't killing tailor, and always had a yarn to share. But even the Orchid Beach crazies were shaking their heads in disbelief one weekend when a mum from Brisbane set up a beatbox in a corner of the bar, cranked up Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and unleashed a little boy who was the most remarkable moondancer anyone had ever seen. This little grom had every one of Whacko Jacko's moves down pat, and
Roach and Quintal man-hug after the heat of the comp. he had us all crying into our beers with laughter at his audacious confidence. The kid was a star in the making. I'd pretty much forgotten all about that long-ago impromptu performance until I sat through most of the interminably long and frequently repetitive "Leaving Neverland" on TV last weekend, watching in disbelief as that dancing grom from Orchid Beach, Wade Robson, his mother who controlled the beatbox, and his two siblings, described the overwhelming tragedy of too much proximity to the late King of Pop. I gave up being a fan of Jackson when he was about the same age as Wade was that weekend at Orchid Beach, the cutest of the

Jackson Five. I'd paid fleeting attention to the string of child sexual abuse allegations that followed Jackson to the grave, but I'd never related that to the Jacko-obsessed boy and his mum who'd thrilled us that night in the bar. Listening to Wade Robson's story and watching the anguish on his face as he related it, I wondered just how many oncelittle fans around the world are still facing up to their demons because they flew too close to the sun. Wade has his own family now and seems to be healing, but there must be countless others whose lives have been ruined by their encounter with the evil gloved weirdo. ●

NOOSA SURFING SURVEY DATA BY ABBEY CANNAN USC "surfonomics" students shared the results last week of their recent research project into who surfs at Noosa and what keeps them coming back. Research chief investigator Dr Javier Leon who runs USC's "surfonomics" geography subject, said the Noosa World Surfing Reserve has long been known as an international surfing hotspot, but that until now little was known about the social and economic factors surrounding its surf culture. That's why he and a team of students
surveyed surfers at Noosa over six weeks, observing what type of surf craft were used, level of surfing, the age and gender of surfers, duration of surf, local expenditure and even surf etiquette. "One thing we learned is that water quality is very important to surfers but, as expected, crowding is the main factor that would deter surfers coming to Noosa," Dr Leon said. Dr Leon said the data would help planners preserve and enhance the surfing amenity of Noosa, while helping local businesses understand the economic benefits of surfing. ●

ANOTHER SEAHORSE YEAR FOR SOME SPECIAL NIPPERS It is now without a doubt one of the most respected groups within the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia; a group that is dedicated to helping children with special needs. In the Noosa Heads club it is known as the Seahorse Nippers and it is because of the success and achievements of this club and one or two others that many similar are now being formed throughout Australia. Now seven years since it came into being, the Noosa Seahorses Nippers will on the weekend of the Saturday 23 March commence another season at Noosa's Main Beach. This will be followed by sessions on the 30 March, 6 and 13 April; and starting at 8am on the set dates all members, both existing and new are invited to assemble on Main Beach. Once again under the supervision of
Steve Mawby and wife Niki plus a team of dedicated workers and helpers they will create for our children opportunity that previously never existed. The helpers, (volunteer qualified lifesavers from Noosa and neighboring clubs) are invited to assemble at 7.30am on the 23 March. Once again we gracefully acknowledge the continued support of the Noosa Shire Council. Their involvement by approving car parking facilities for nipper parents adjacent to the Public Toilets in Lions Park, is a massive help. Once again the enrolments for the sessions are on the increase so a good role up of helpers is of the utmost importance. " With this being the start of yet another season," said Steve Mawby, "I think it is only appropriate that on behalf
of our management team we extend our thanks for the ongoing support of all our volunteer workers and in particular the local council. Without them this would not be happening." For all our Queensland nipper clubs, last weekend was definitely a weekend to celebrate. With all their competition teams assembling at Burleigh Heads for the State Titles it was indeed a double celebration; that weekend was the 50 year celebration of the first titles in 1969 and Burleigh Heads was the host club. Conditions were ideal with a good challenging surf, perfect for state titles. With final results to hand the Noosa club did well. "We could not be happier; it was our best results for about seven years," JAC
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
director Steve Tindall said. "Our overall results were six gold medals, five silver and four bronze. There were many great performances but the stand-out effort was definitely our U11 boys. They won event after event giving them four gold medals as well as one individual Gold and the girls won the gold medal for the beach relay. A lot of this is due to the great work of Age Manager Sam Anderssen; he is to be congratulated." Results for Sunshine Beach were also good with three gold seven silver and three bronze. "We were a little bit unlucky with seven silver; this tells us just how close several of our finishers were," said Coach Josh Minogue. Well done to both our clubs. ●

WINTER SPECIES ON THE WAY, WITH WINDS LIGHT OFFSHORE Winds were light and everyone was offshore this weekend. With the swell small enough we have seen many anglers make the most of the conditions. We can certainly expect to see our winter species coming through as the daytime temps and water temps begin to cool down. North reef has been quiet on the mackerel front but has thrown up some huge Maori cod and tuskies. There have also been some cracking jewfish, pearl perch and snapper. On the gang hooked pilchard floater there have been some longtail tuna and cobia caught although some fish have been unstoppable. No reports of sharks from out wide but in close there have been some reported. Sunshine reef was certainly the pick of the spots with almost everything you could possibly want on offer. For the guys dropping baits to the bottom on paternoster rigs and 10 ball sinkers with snelled 7/0 octopus hooks then coral trout, cod and sweetlip were first up. A bit higher off the reef bottom there were snapper, pearl perch and mid water the mackerel and tuna were present. Again casting Arma radico slugs noosatoday.com.au
A great condition Borumba Bass caught by Local Angler Dylan Versteggen. at the tuna boils and following the birds produced some cracking fish. Letting your lures sink lower down also connected some anglers with mackerel. If losing fish then a short 3-4 inch length of single strand wire really helps. Don't forget to drop a few spanner crab pots while heading out to North reef. There is some great grounds to be found and the rewards can be high. Come and speak to the guys about setting a few up. Surf fishing is certainly coming alive after the drop in swell with whiting, bream, dart and even the odd tailor coming through from the various new gutters that
have formed north and south of the Noosa Bar. Fishing whole worm an drawn baits working well on the smaller fish with larger fish taken on whole pilchard, whitebait and strip baits. Noosa River has been a little quieter, however the lower areas are showing signs of a good season ahead. The river mouth and along the current line have seen some standout flatties caught on a mix of live and dead baits. These fish are masters at taking big baits quickly so strike fast to prevent them busting you off. Try lightly weighted gang hooked whitebait and small pilchards. Soft vibes also work extremely well when worked along the sand so look out for Samaki and Berkley Shimma shads. Bream are schooling up around the rocks of the river mouth and the dog beach sand bags. They love a small chunk of mullet fished on a small octopus style hook and long running sinker rig. Using mullet is a great way to keep baits in place as does a small length of bait wrap. If you can prevent small fish from taking your bait the bigger fish will have a chance. If after trevally then look around Noosa Marina, Gympie Terrace and woods
bay. These fish are usually seen hitting the bait fish on the surface in the mornings. If this happens cast a small surface lure like an Atomic Bulldog into the feeding fish and skip it back. They also love fleshy baits like mullet strip and pippies so keep baits in the zone and wait for one to pick it up and run for the horizon! Mangrove jacks are still feeding hard with the better fish caught on live baits like poddy mullet and 3/0-5/0 circle style hooks. Don't forget to set some crab pots as muddies are still moving around.Freshwater impoundments are still showing some great fish with bass and saratoga very much feeding hard. Most toga are getting caught at Borumba on small surface lures like Sammy 65 from Lucky Craft and subsurface lures including the OSP Bent Minnow 86 & 106mm. Bass have been caught along the weed edges and various drop offs on vibes and blades with spinnerbaits working for those anglers who cast deep into structure. Suspending hardbodies like Bassday Sugadeep also work well against trees and also for trolling. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
