Armoured police at the scene of a shooting in Blossom Drive, Doveton on 13 March. 191476 tralia, the number of stolen firearms in Victoria more than doubled in the decade up to 2017. More than 6000 firearms were stolen in Victoria in that period, it claimed. In the past four years, recorded weapons and explosives offences in Greater Dandenong have risen and fallen. In the 12 months up to September 2018, the offence per-capita rate dropped 17 per cent. Last May, the State Government introduced firearm prohibition orders designed to prevent organized crime networks accessing illegal fire arms. Since then, Victoria Police had served more than 145 orders on high-risk individuals, in-

cluding members of outlaw motorcycle gangs, Middle Eastern gangs and counter-terrorism 'persons of interest'. It allows police to search those individuals' premises and vehicles without a warrant. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said she understood there was concern in the community over the incidents. "So part of our job is to make sure we have really swift justice outcomes." The spate has focused minds on illicit guns in the community, and being held in the wrong hands. In its illicit gun report in July, the Australian Crime Commission identified the black market being supplied by thefts from firearms shops and licensed individuals as well as illegal importation. "Even a small number of illegal firearms in circulation can have a significant impact, particularly when a cycle of retaliatory violence begins." According to lobby group Gun Control Aus-

Victoria Police have moved to allay community fears after a horrific run of three seemingly unrelated shootings in less than two weeks in Greater Dandenong. In the third incident, The Tran, 42, of Mulgrave, was charged of shooting a woman in a house in Blossom Drive, Doveton about 12pm on Wednesday 13 March. It culminated in an alarmed response from readers expressing fears for safety on Star News's Facebook page. "Horrible and scary," one reader described the news. Another lamented the sight of the street being taped off as armoured police swarmed in. "Gonna have to get myself a Glock," another stated. Days earlier, Paguir Pan, 19, of Dandenong, was charged with murder in relation to a shooting of a man outside a premises at 196 Springvale Road Springvale on the night of Sunday 10 March. Police are still investigating who killed a man, reportedly Mitat Rasimi, who had been found shot in a car that crashed in Dandenong on 3 March. In other parts of Melbourne early this month, three men had been shot dead in Kensington and Meadow Heights. Police have thrown its Crime Command units such as Homicide and Armed Crime squads into investigating the matters. A Victoria Police spokesperson said none of the three Greater Dandenong incidents were linked. "All involved parties who were known to each other," the spokesperson said. "We understand that there is community concern following the fatal shooting at Dandenong and we want to reassure people that this matter is subject to a significant active investigation that is absolutely a priority for Victoria Police." After the Springvale shooting, Commander Tim Hansen, of Victoria Police, told reporters that "on any standard Melbourne is a safe city". "Yes we have incidents and crime events that cause us concern and the general public concern. (They) are really confronting and make us feel vulnerable. "Shooting crime is a horrendous crime and strikes at the heart of what we feel safe about.

IN BRIEF

Congestion-buster By Cam Lucadou-Wells During a 20 minute press conference, boom gate signals hold up long lines of cars and trucks five times. You could say the bells are certainly tolling for the removal of South Gippsland Highway’s congested level crossing in Dandenong South. The State Government unveiled the intersection’s redesign - a road bridge clearing the rail line coupled with a new-look, safer intersection at Princes Highway. It is expected to be completed by 2022. According to the Government, the level crossing was the site of four crashes and more than 40 near misses in 10 years. The boom gates are down for a third of the morning peak period for a key freight and commuter route into the suburb’s manufacturing precinct, which holds 31,000 vehicles each weekday. The South Gippy-Princes highways intersection was the scene of one fatality and four serious-injury crashes in the past decade. As a vast safety improvement, the tight kink at the junction will be straightened. Plus, no longer will left-turning vehicles merge into fast-flowing traffic on Princes Highway. The area had been identified as one of the main bug-bears for Star News readers in our recent Unlock the Gridlock campaign. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allen said the road-over-rail design was chosen because it was a quicker construction. It would result in a lesser period of traffic disruption, and minimal closures of the Pakenham rail line. The road bridge will also be built next to the current alignment, minimising road closures during the project. Other treatments wouldn’t have provided the value-added opportunity to improve the Princes Highway intersection, Ms Allen said. “This project will save local transport operators and business in the manufacturing

A bid to increase the jail time for a shooter who killed 20-year-old Dandenong man Rahat Khan has been dismissed by the Victorian Court of Appeal. The Director of Public Prosecutions had appealed against what it submitted was a “manifestly inadequate“ five-year sentence - with eligibility for parole within three years - for Kamil Yucel’s act of manslaughter. Yucel, 30, had shot the unarmed Mr Khan twice with a handgun during an angry confrontation in Dallas, Melbourne in July 2016. Yucel had aimed his gun in a downwards trajectory. The victim died from a gunshot wound to the chest, as he bent forward after being first shot in the leg. It was found by the Supreme Court last year that Yucel had armed himself out of an “ongoing, genuine and reasonable” fear of being shot in a revenge attack ordered by one of

heartland of Victoria time and money.” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the upgrade would also shave up to 30 minutes in delays for workers commuting into the precinct. Negotiations had taken place to acquire three business properties as part of the project.

Mr Khan’s associates. Police had warned Yucel that he was in danger at the time. He had been laying low - spending large amounts of time in Turkey, staying at different places in Melbourne and parking his car away from his dwellings. He’d known the victim Mr Khan only as an associate of the man he feared, Justice Lesley Taylor said during sentencing last year. “While that action may be ‘defensive in nature’ ... it was nonetheless illegal. “You chose to act outside the law and not within in it.” Mr Khan, known as a gifted cricketer and Aussie-Rules footballer at Dandenong North, aspired to play AFL. Justice Taylor noted that Mr Khan’s family was “shattered” by his death. In a joint judgement in the Court of Appeal on 14 March, Justices Stephen Kaye, Richard

There are also plans to remove the other traffic-jamming level crossings in the region, including Greens Road, Webster Street and Evans Road, as well as to duplicate the Dandenong-Cranbourne line. Work is expected to start on the South Gippsland Highway project in 2020.

Niall and Mark Weinberg found the sentencing was “in range” for the “unusual” and “unique” case. “It is at least clear that this was far from being at the higher end of unlawful and dangerous act manslaughter. “The evidence that was before the sentencing judge clearly established that at the time of the incident in which Khan was killed, the respondent had a genuine fear that his life, and perhaps that of his immediate family, were in real danger.” The appeal judges also noted Yucel’s good prospects of rehabilitation, a lengthy trial delay and strong family support. “There is nothing to indicate that Her Honour failed to appreciate the seriousness of the offence. “A sentence of five years’ imprisonment is not to be viewed as a ‘slap on the wrist’.”

Footy club shed A maintenance shed at Noble Park Football Club has been rammed open by a car. A white, late-model VW vehicle struck the back of the brick shed, and drove inside about 6.30am on Thursday 7 March. There were no people inside the shed, which is near the Scout hall at the rear of the Aenone Avenue reserve. The abandoned vehicle had been stolen during an aggravated burglary in Brighton on 4 March, police say. It was towed away for forensic investigation. Police officers have escaped injury after a fleeing motorist rammed a police car’s open door in a dead-end street in Dandenong. Just after midnight on Saturday 9 March, police followed the driver in a 1999 Hyundai Excel with expired registration. The Excel drove to the end turning bowl of Garside Street. Behind the car, the police vehicle stopped and blocked off the middle of the road. The motorist turned around the car, then drove towards the police car, according to Greater Dandenong CIU. The escaping vehicle rammed the police vehicle’s open passenger door, damaging the door and its door-frame. Police say they elected not to pursue the driver at that point. One-off treats from globe By Cam Lucadou-Wells Outside of the upcoming Dandenong Market World Fare, you won't get many opportunities to try such exotic dishes as a Creole octopus curry or the wildly purple ube champorado. The market's diverse food traders will be creating one-off special delicacies for the festival on 24 March. For example, the octopus curry is a traditional dish from the Seychelles - a region that is otherwise left off Melbourne's culinary map. Delicious Mauritius owner Girish Ramjuttun imports the octopus from the Mauritian island of Rodrigues. It is regarded as the world's best. He says octopus is best cooked after being frozen. It allows it to be eaten as a surprisingly tender offering.

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL His Creole dish bathes in a typically Seychelles-style of mild curry, blended with dry spices, ginger, garlic, eggplant and coconut milk. On the side is a hot tomato salsa-like chutney and roti bread. Having grown up with octopus on the table, Mr Ramjuttun was surprised that it was not so popular in Australia. Then he saw a billboard featuring an im-

posing 10-metre long octopus outside Melbourne Aquarium. He realised that perhaps Australians fear the amazing creature. He'd opened his eatery, originally called La Caze Mama (Your Mother's House), in late 2016 due to the lack of options for Mauritian cuisine. "Mauritian food is close to my heart," Mr Ramjuttun said. "I found fellow Mauritians here weren't getting proper access to these foods." Meanwhile, your won't get a more unique combination than the ube champorado at the Filipino eatery Si Kat Pinoy Eatscetera. It's a luminously purple rice pudding served with crispy dried fish on the side - a combination of sweet and salt. A popular breakfast or snack food in her hometown Dragupan City, Catherine Pascera

says she swapped the champorado's traditional chocolate rice pudding for a purple yam base. "I wanted to give it a little twist for the festival." Another rare treat is to be found at San San's Dumplings, where Xian Lim Chen offers a one-off layered pan-fried pancake of mince, onion, sping onions and secret spices with a traditional Chinese sauce. It will complement her hand-made shallowfried dumplings that are something of a cult food at the market. They are a recipe handed down from her great-great-grandfather. More than 40,000 are expected to flock for the rare foodie treats, as well as a bevy of cultural performances, at the World Fare. It is at Dandenong Market on Sunday 24 March, 10am-4pm.

Bikie drug lord gets jail By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Comanchero who led a large-scale drug trafficking operation in the South East and survived a targeted shooting at a Hampton Park tattoo parlour has been jailed. Robert Ale, 37, of Lyndhurst, headed and controlled The Last Kings - a group tasked to do the work that the Comancheros couldn't be seen doing, Victorian County Court judge Paul Higham said on 8 March. While Ale's enterprise built his standing in the criminal world, it was a "direct challenge to the fabric of the community". "You did believe you were above the law," Judge Higham said. Ale had used the force of his personality, fear, money and misguided loyalties to corrupt "impressionable" associates to carry out crimes such as the violent enforcement of a

debt in Doreen in late 2016. Before the attempted drive-by shooting, Ale had texted one of his minion enforcers to "enjoy the adrenaline rush". However, police foiled the plan as well as an earlier proposed bashing at the unknown victim's home, the court heard. Ale had also conspired to burn down a Kittens nightclub in Melbourne - a venue seemingly owned by a rival outlaw motorcycle gang. He'd also instructed an associate to torch a stolen Mercedes Benz in Dandenong. Police in the area again foiled the plan and retrieved the vehicle. Ale was charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of nearly $1.25 million of ice over five months in 2016-17. He also trafficked cocaine, amphetamine, cannabis, ecstasy and 1-4 butanediol during the same period.

Cash, high-end watches and a gold ring seized from Ale's home showed the considerable profits of his enterprise, Judge Higham noted. Ale had survived up to 10 rounds of bullets during a shooting at Nitro Ink tattoo parlour in Hampton Park in February 2018. As a result, he suffered health issues including a hernia that needed urgent invasive surgery, the court heard. He'd suffered post-traumatic stress from growing up with severe beatings in an abusive, violent household in Frankston. His PTSD had escalated since the shooting. These lasting impacts gave context but no excuse for Ale's offending, Judge Higham said. While working in events and marketing at Nitro Gym, Ale became attracted to the "brotherhood and belonging" offered by the Comanchero gang, Judge Higham noted.

At the same time, Ale's drug use accelerated. While being jailed and released on strict bail in 2017, he'd enthusiastically taken part in alcohol and drug treatment. He'd shown genuine remorse and contrition, the court heard. However as the "apex" of a drug operation, Ale needed to be sternly punished, the judge said. "Drugs are quite simply tearing the heart out of our community. "Our community is losing a generation. "Those who participate in this evil trade can expect to be punished." Ale had pleaded guilty to an array of drug, weapons and proceeds of crime offences as well as conspiracy to commit arson and recklessly cause injury. He was jailed for 18 years with a minimum non-parole period of 13 years, nine months.

College unveils $5m reboot Premier Daniel Andrews cut the ribbon on an extensive modern facelift at Noble Park Secondary College. The three-stage $5 million project over three stages included a Senior Centre for Year 11 and 12 students with modern classrooms, an auditorium, study nooks, careers counselling offices and administrative wing. The old Middle C block classrooms became modernised, with a new drama room, music rooms and staffrooms. A completely new arts-technology building with an outdoor canopy and a newly landscaped courtyard were also created. "It has been a four-year-long journey," principal Pam Dyson said. "We are very grateful that we can now cel-

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council is set to formally lobby the State Government to retain parkland in Dalgety Street, Dandenong South. After years of fruitless negotiation with the council, Melbourne Water is considering the disposal of the 'surplus' public-owned land for redevelopment. At a meeting on 12 March, Cr Jim Memeti labelled the move as "beyond a joke". The council had managed the 3000-squaremetre parkland backing onto Dandenong Creek for many years, he said. It had become a popular playground as well as a place to kick footballs and soccer balls. "I had thought we owned this land and to potentially lose this land would be detrimental." Councillors unanimously endorsed writing to Water Minister Lisa Neville, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams and other State Government ministers for the 3000-square-metre parkland to be gifted or leased at a peppercorn rate to the council. Cr Matthew Kirwan said residents had expressed how important the park was to them. "Visiting the park myself I have seen young families use it specifically, as young families prefer smaller parks, and also people walk through it particularly walking their dogs. "It forms a important adjunct to the pedestrian and cycling trail on the south bank of the Dandenong Creek which as a council we have supplemented in recent years with plantings of indigenous vegetation." Cr Kirwan noted that the land was classified as a Public Park and Recreation Zone "which

The future of Dalgety Street's creekside park is up in the air. 190688 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS means Melbourne Water themselves recognise it as a park". In recent weeks, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams and Cr Kirwan had clashed over the future of 'surplus' Melbourne Water land in Dandenong. Since 2014, the council has resisted an offer to purchase the land from Melbourne Water for more than $2 million. Cr Kirwan was opposed to ratepayers essentially having to buy back public land as "vital" open space. Ms Williams recently told Star News that after "multiple opportunities" that the council had "rejected outright purchasing the land". "Rather than politicking Cr Kirwan needs to actually work with his fellow City of Greater Dandenong councillors to establish a formal position on the transfer of this land. "The community expects council to work productively with Melbourne Water to get the best outcome for those who use this open space."

Kaufland set for Dandy

The home was gutted by the fire.

Home destroyed By Cam Lucadou-Wells A family home in Keysborough was destroyed in minutes by fire, believed to have been sparked by an electrical fault in a car parked in the garage. Six fire-fighting units, including four pumper trucks, were called to the fierce blaze at Lakeview Boulevard about 2.40pm on Sunday 10 March. CFA units from Keysborough, Springvale, Keysborough, Edithvale and Frankston as well as a MFB truck battled for about 45 minutes to bring it under control. It took a further 50 minutes to extinguish it. By that time, the home of a family-of-four was totally destroyed.

An hour before the fire, a resident had parked his 2018 VW Golf - fitted with aftermarket accessories - in the garage and then went to sleep inside the home. His parents were later alerted by a smoke alarm to smoke billowing from under the garage door. All of the family escaped unharmed. Witness Katie Baddack said she saw a "massive plume of smoke" as she drove past. "It was terrible. "From the start of the fire to the end, it went through the house in about 10 minutes." Vic Emergency issued an information message about the thick smoke from the blaze at the time.

German supermarket giant Kaufland has been given the go-ahead to open in Dandenong. The store at the former Bunnings site on Princes Highway and Gladstone Road won planning approval from the State Government after being assessed by an independent planning advisory committee. Stores in Chirnside Park and Epping were also approved, along with a distribution centre in Mickleham and Kaufland's Australian headquarters in Melbourne. Economic Development Minister Tim Pallas described the supermarket's arrival as a "huge notch on Victoria's belt". "Kaufland's investment will boost our economy, create jobs and provide opportunities for local businesses, not to mention open up a whole new world of supermarket shopping for Victorian families." Jobs, Innovation and Trade Minister Martin Pakula said up to 1600 jobs would be created, with potential for further expansion. Three further stores have been proposed for Oakleigh South, Mornington and Coolaroo. Kaufland managing director Julia Kern described the stores as a "one-stop destination supermarket". "Our initial investment of $459 million will create opportunities for local businesses and stimulate much needed competition and consumer choice in Australia's supermarket sector."

LOOKING BACK

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

In Dandenong, ours are unkempt, with grass and weeds flourishing between. If we cannot emulate the achievements of smaller places then let us endeavour to at least reach the standard they have set. Returned soldiers would be ideally suited for the work which would be both congenial and central.

100 years ago 20 March 1919 Dandenong Main Street To the Editor As the Commonwealth Repatriation authorities are presenting Victorian Municipalities with sums, averaging £791, for providing work for returned soldiers, it seems to me that the centre ridings share could profitably be spent on our Main street. I think it can safely be said that in not one town of the size of Dandenong in Victoria is the main thoroughfare such an ugly and uninteresting feature. Mordialloc a smaller and less important township has a main road of the same width as ours, but it is in marked contrast. The main road itself, like Dandenong's is a fine piece of work, but its side tracks are certainly much better. Most admirable of all are the continuous well-kept garden plots either side.

50 years ago 20 March 1969 Probe on Parking The City Council will conduct a survey of properties on the west side of Lonsdale St to determine the practicability of off-street parking. However a move to speed up consideration and make available information on valuations to a Chamber of Commerce was blocked in Dandenong council last week. Introducing the motion for a survey Cr W Titcher spoke on the need for parking in Lonsdale St, especially on the western side and of the finance

needed to put it in to operation. Cr Peter Wagstaff who seconded Cr Titchers motion said the Chamber of Commerce had done a great deal towards preparing for a betterman rate and he suggested council's co-operation would be welcome.

20 years ago 22 March1999 MP in call for heroin trials Heroin trials should be introduced immediately to stop the "explosion" of drug abuse in Greater Dandenong. This was the view expressed by the Federal Labor MP for Holt, Mr Gareth Evans at Chisolm Institute in Dandenong on Wednesday. "The drugs problem is careering out of control," he said. "My staff in one day reported seeing three people shooting up on a bench outside my office. We have got ourselves a big problem."

5 years ago 17 March 2014 2013 Premier Regional Business Awards 'IVECO keeps on truckin' IVECO Trucks Australia has been in Dandenong since the early 1950s when international harvester, as it was then known, developed a truck manufacturing facility. "I hope the facility will remain in Dandenong another 60 years at least" spokesman Ron Grasso said ... The business expects to grow in the coming years through opportunities in bus and coach manufacturing. Awards chairman James Sturgees said "IVECO Trucks Australia had about 600 employees Australia wide." "The Dandenong headquarters houses around 150 within the manufacturing facility, with around 300 in manufacturing support roles" he said. Compiled by Dandenong & District Historical Society

Leading Fire Fighter Kevin Kissell said the donuts went down well during the demanding, frenetic task. "It brings a smile to the face and lifts morale. "It shows us that we've got the community behind us. "I'd say they're the best donuts in Melbourne."

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council will pitch in $10,000 towards relief charity efforts to help victims of the Bunyip State Park bushfires. The devastating fires this month destroyed 29 houses plus 76 outbuildings and sheds. Cr Tim Dark, who proposed the motion, said charity Casey Cardinia Foundation had received requests from a lot of people who had lost animals, livelihoods and wineries. As of 14 March, 38 fire trucks and appliances were still on the fire ground, which covered more than 15,400 hectares. More than 2000 firefighters and 61 aircraft had been used to quell the blazes. Meanwhile, Dandy Donuts stepped up by delivering 60 donuts to fire-fighters at the height of the disaster. Lee Franklin, who works at the iconic Dan-

A proposed funeral parlour in the heart of a Springvale South residential area has been quashed by Greater Dandenong Council. Councillors on 12 March unanimously overruled a council planner's report that recommended the project's approval at 69-71 Athol Road, previously the home of a Jehovah's Witnesses church. The proposal by Zaly Pty Ltd attracted 30 formal objections on the grounds of traffic congestion, road safety, parking access, noise and mental health concerns. Cr Youhorn Chea moved for the proposal's rejection due to it being an unsuitable location and adverse traffic impacts. "In this area we have a lot of Asian people living there. "If we have a funeral parlour, the neighbours don't feel safe." The key issue was the funeral parlour was

whether it was a "non-residential land use within the core of a residential zone", according to a council report tabled on 12 March. Located 230 metres from the nearest primary school, the parlour was "appropriate and compatible within a residential zone". It would serve the needs of the community and wouldn't be impacted by noise of industrial areas, the report stated. "As evident by other areas of the municipality, funeral parlours are typically located within residential areas. "Funerals are an aspect of human life, and perform necessary services that seek to assist the community long term." Under the proposal, the parlour would host one funeral service a day for up to 80 visitors. It would allow for a dead person to be laid in the casket overnight before a service, but not an on-site mortuary for the storage and preparation of the deceased.

Blame-game on traffic By Cam Lucadou-Wells The dangerous traffic woes plaguing Dandenong North Primary School are a matter for the local council to solve, according to the Department of Education and Training. For years, there's been an increasingly perilous mix of parents and students crossing streets clogged with cars as the school has soared in population. In December, a resident was crushed between cars during a school drop-off time in Woodlee Street. "The Department has raised concerns about this issue with the Greater Dandenong Council who are responsible for street parking regulations and traffic management," a spokesperson said. "We know that some schools, particularly those in residential, built-up areas, can face some challenges with parking during pick up and drop off times. "Safety around schools is everyone's responsibility - for parents, students and the local community." A nearby resident Kyle Gibbons said the department should use land at the former Cleeland Secondary College site across the road as a solution. The land could be used for on-site parking, or to enable an inlet parking bay for parents to quickly drop-off and pick-up their children, Mr Gibbons said. "Otherwise we're just waiting for someone else to be hurt." Dandenong North Primary School's staff have arrangements to park at Dandenong

A taxi and another car in a standoff on Woodlee Street during school peak-time. 190894 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS High School and a nearby church. It has also communicated to parents of safe drop-off and pick-up points further away from the primary school. Residents have also suggested making Woodlee Street one-way during school peak times - to avoid the current two-way traffic bedlam. Greater Dandenong engineering services director Julie Reid recently said investigations found a one-way system on Woodlee Street would not help traffic flow or safety. "The traffic volumes and congestion on David Street mean that a southbound one-way system would not noticeably reduce congestion. "A northbound one-way system would mean that all pupils would have to cross the road to get picked up. "Introducing a one-way system would compromise road safety, encourage higher traffic speeds and increase the likelihood of a serious accident." Cr Matthew Kirwan foreshadowed a motion for the council to further investigate solutions.

Stevie Collins, 26, Will Tucker, 26, and Shannan Mu, 41, show off their Spartan Melbourne medals.

Defying the law of averages Lawyers at Maurice Blackburn Dandenong swapped statute books for the rigors of the Spartan Melbourne Race in Tooradin this month. Similar to the Tough Mudder challenge, the gruelling obstacle course race included a lot of mud and lifting heavy objects. It proved no match for law clerk Shannan Mu and colleagues Stevie Collins and Will Tucker. They used their allocated annual two days off for wellbeing activities to compete and recover from the event. Ms Mu, a mother of six and grandmother, was the ringleader of the team, as well as the office's 'fitness guru'. "I'm just trying to show average people they can do anything. "People look at the Spartan Race and think, 'there's no way I can do that'. But you don't know what your body can do until you

give it a go." She took up Spartan races after going on a bootcamp to lose weight. Three years later, she had dropped 40 kilos. In September, she plans to take on the World Champion Spartan Race in Lake Tahoe, USA. "It's really hard to explain why I love it so much - the adrenaline is just addictive. "There's just such great comradery; there's always someone there willing to help you with a leg up over an obstacle." Ms Mu is trying to recruit more co-workers to join the races. "As lawyers, we deal with all kinds of vicarious trauma every day, particularly within our road and work injury teams. "So exercise - especially something adrenaline-pumping like the Spartan Race - is such a good outlet for stress."

Creating a better balance By Garry Howe Diverse teams yield the best outcomes - and better the balance, better the world. Those messages came through loud and clear at an International Women’s Day lunch at Outlook in Pakenham last Friday 8 March. To underline that point, Outlook deputy CEO Ann McCormack introduced its management team at the Hampton Park recycling facility - contract manager Karen Hunt and site managers Tina Peck and Shannen Egbers. They represent Outlook’s first all-female management team in that area. “They are all doing a great job,” Ms McCormack said. “They are just as capable as anyone else in what has been a male-dominated environment.” Georgina McClure, one of three guest speakers at the lunch, said she had worked in both female and male dominated industries in 15 years working in the human resources field. She is now HR manager for CCF-Civil Construction Federation, involved with the Metro Tunnel project. “One thing that is unquestionable is that diverse teams yield the best outcomes,” she said. “Overall I’ve had very positive experiences and met some amazing people along the way. But unfortunately like many of my female friends and colleagues I’ve experienced some instances of sexism, sexual harassment and judgements on whether I can do my job based on my appearance and my gender. “I do think it’s getting better with generational change, but we still have some way to go.” Ms McClure said women made up 50.2 per cent of the population, yet were not represented that way in government and business. “Change is necessary and whilst targets aren’t ideal, I think it draws awareness and brings about accountability in the attraction

She said it was crucial that men need to make way and support women to come up the ranks, with women less confident than men of taking a leap of faith unless they were 100 per cent confident they were skilled and trained for the task. Men were more likely to have ago anyway. “To achieve balance, we also need to look at how we manage flexibility in the workplace,” she said. “I know a number of women who have struggled to get back to the roles they were

in prior to having a family, often taking a side step or a step down jut to balance their caring responsibility. “But this isn’t just about women, it is about men and giving them the opportunity to have flexible arrangements so they can be primary care givers, allowing women to continue in their roles. We need to make it acceptable and okey for men to do this. “This needs to start at the top so men can look up to senior leaders and see that they are doing it to reassure them it is okay to ask for flexible arrangements.” Ms McClure said there were things that could be done internally to engage and develop more women through targeted training and development, mentoring programs and succession planning. “A diverse team can better solve problems, allows a team to work to their individual strength, giving a greater sense of purpose, allows for productive conflict and yields increased creativity and innovation. “Balance isn’t just gender - it’s embracing people of different ages, race, religion and background. “A diverse room brings a diversity of thought and from a business and government and community perspective, we can’t live without that.” Outlook CEO Sam Sondhi said the Outlook community was a more inclusive society than most, transcending disability. Mr Sondhi said he was proud of the 50-50 gender split at board level, in management and through the frontline staff, but their efforts to get disable people into employment was still male dominated. He vowed to improve that statistic. “We will aspire to create more employment opportunities for women with a disability,” he said.

His life for others By Casey Neill

Lee Tarlamis.

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate. His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June. The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said. “I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement. “It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people. “It’s a view that I formed very early on.” Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17. “The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

throughout those two years,” he said. “It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me. “That’s why I got involved in the local community.” Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre. “The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.” There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer. “That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said. “That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.” He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014. “That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said. Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings. The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up. The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old. He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands. Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business. “I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said. “I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that. “I really enjoyed the community stuff. “Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light: Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light is used to treat conditions related to skin damage and premature aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, redness, acne scars, broken capillaries, pigmentation, melasma, age spots and general photo rejuvenation. Non ablative skin rejuvenation uses radio frequencies to improve the appearance of wrinkles, brown spots and minor scars by creating heat in the skin with out injuring the surface of the skin. The heat generated promotes collagen production which results in tighter, healthier, younger Iooking skin. Treatments are suitable to most skin types. NEWS

Co-working office offer Flexible workspace provider Victory Offices is throwing open the doors of its Dandenong office and inviting small businesses the chance to experience co-working for a full week - for just $59. Between 25 - 29 March, small businesses will receive full access to Victory's co-working space at 311 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong, and be offered networking opportunities with other local founders, start-ups, SMEs and business people. The week will also feature a series of professional development sessions with business gurus and motivational speakers. The offer is designed to expose businesses to what's becoming known as the co-working 'side effect' - that is the networking and business opportunities presented by using a coworking space. It's a phenomenon that Victory Offices chief executive Dan Baxter said was becoming increasingly prevalent among his clients across Australia. "More than 250 start-ups currently use our space and more than half of them claim that growth has been turbo charged by the networking and business opportunities presented by the co-working colleagues - opportunities they wouldn't have otherwise had," Mr Baxter said. "Co-working has already evolved well beyond simply a space to work, and the networking opportunities have become a major element of the value proposition. Michael Yarrow of DigitPro Consultants & Bookkeepers was one of Victory Offices' first clients, more than five years ago. He says that his business has experienced consistent growth after moving in to the co-working environment. "In short, it's a great way to expand my network, and not something I expected when I considered co-working as a viable option for my business."

Inside Victory Office's co-working space. Mr Yarrow is one of several professionals and motivational speakers who'll address guests over the course of the week and provide insight into the science of growing a small business.

Others include Andrew Jobling who is launching his seventh book The Wellness Puzzle, Daniel Soyfer and David Kritchevski of Lead Gen Guys on creating viable leads through social media selling and Paul Broom and Debbie Lee of Empowered to Speak who

will share insights on how to pitch for business using storytelling. Details: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/ victory-offices-coworking-week-dandenongtickets-58211694746?aff=ebdssbdestsearchH

Days of harmony Harmony Day was celebrated in various forms in Greater Dandenong. Armada Dandenong Plaza hosted a day of dance celebrations on 16 March. It featured performances of Aboriginal, Chinese, Bollywood, Japanese, Middle Eastern, African and Polynesian traditional dance. Kids were also invited to dress in a cultural

outfit, as well as have their face painted in a national flag. "Harmony Day is particularly significant to our centre as we have a large number of different nationalities represented amongst our retailers, staff and customers," centre manager Mark Tannahill said. At Harmony Square, Springvale Neighbour-

hood House staged a cultural concert, international dance parade as well as food stalls and Chinese-tea tasting on 17 March. Meanwhile, Dandenong Community Family Day Care was set to stage a dress-up picnic at Tatterson Park, Keysborough. It invited children to dress in their national dress or "something orange".

Evolution Music Entertainment presents Tillerman - The Cat Stevens Songbook at Lynbrook on 30 March. After an absence of 12 months Tillerman is back at the wonderful Faith Theatre in Lynbrook to start the 2019 season. With an all new production featuring sound, lighting and visual, the team, led by vocalist Michael Prizeman, promises an experience not to forget. “It has taken just on 12 months to get the production just right and now we can give showgoers the ultimate experience," Michael said. “This is more than a tribute show. Cat Stevens' music is so intertwined with the 70s and the sounds so distinctive, you are instantly brought back to that era when the first note is struck." Tickets are now on sale through www.trybooking.com and search Cat Stevens or by ringing the hotline on 0490 554 902. The show will be touring metro Melbourne over the next three months then country Victoria.

DDCA’s best of the best In what has been another strong individual season for many of the top cricketers in the Dandenong District's top tier, DDCA reporter Nick Creely has chosen his Turf 1 Team of the Year, based on the home and away season. Buckley Ridges' star overseas import David White has been named captain of the side after

SPORT

Soccer for the South East By Hayley Wildes There is a new soccer club in Dandenong and it's fair to say South East United FC is already making its mark on the local community. South East United FC began to take shape in October last year when several members of different local soccer clubs came together because they saw a need. "I felt that there was a lack of soccer for girls and children in that zone where we're located," chairman of the club Sinan Akkurt said. "We're a couple of people from surrounding clubs getting together and getting a lot more done in a short amount of time because everyone has the passion in them and the vision is the same; we want to focus on children's development and girls for the sports. "We haven't entered a team in the state league this year - we weren't focused on men's teams because there's men's clubs everywhere around the corner. "We wanted to provide our community with what it lacks; soccer for women and for children." Despite having not even played a game yet, they've done just that. With over 80 committed players, the club has teams for Under 9s mixed, Under 12s mixed, a women's team for ages 14 and up and two metro teams, as well as offering a Miniroos program for children aged 5-6. "We're also striving to help lower income earning families be able to afford registration

Gulcan Koca, Melbourne Victory's W-League games record-holder, visited South East United FC recently. and stuff like that through sponsorship and fundraising," Akkurt said. "We're trying to do our part in saying, 'listen, the sport is here, we're here to help, don't worry about the funding, we'll find someone to fund your children,' so that they're not missing out.

"We want to make sure that that part of it is covered as much as possible by fundraising and sponsorship for those families." South East United FC has certainly come a long way in a short amount of time and there's no doubt that having already entrenched itself in the local community, that bond will only become stronger in the coming months and years.

With the season kicking off on 7 April, there's still time to join in the fun at South East United FC. The club is based at W J Turner Reserve on 125 Jacksons Road, Noble Park. For more information or to get in touch, visit the club's Facebook page by searching South East United.

rays recently announced a 30-strong squad for the AFL Vic Country Under-16 Challenge. In what is sure to be an exciting challenge for the Stingrays, the club has picked some serious talent, and some that will be sure to attract interest in a few years when they are eligible to be taken in the AFL National Draft.
