SHIFT IN THE SEASONS BRINGS COLOUR AND FUN AUTUMN is my favourite time of the year, and I find it even more magical in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley. Watching the leaves on the trees and grapevines gradually change from bright greens to striking oranges, deep reds and rusty browns is a delight. It’s a great time to explore the region’s official gardens, from the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens in Sherbrooke to Alowyn Gardens in Yarra Glen. But it’s also easy to admire the beauty of autumn colour from almost any Dandenongs or valley road. Any road trip can become an autumnappreciation journey. Aside from admiring the foliage, there’s plenty to see and do. Adventure Dog is inviting doggos and their owners to get down and dirty on an obstacle course to raise money for animals in need. Dandenong Ranges artists will throw open their doors to the creative spaces and there’ll be chestnuts roasting in Kalorama. The Warburton Film Festival and Upper Yarra Crank Up celebration of history will provide cultured experiences, and there’s plenty more. Happy exploring!

ADVENTURE DOG
MAKE A SPLASH WITH ADVENTURE DOG ADVENTURE Dog welcomes all dog owners to take part in a cross country challenge at Wandin Park Equestrian Centre on Sunday 7 April. The event features 25 obstacles spanning more than 4 kilometres, offering a physically and mentally challenging outing for four-legged friends and their owners. Fur babies and their mums and dads will venture over hills, under logs, through the mud and lunge into water, all while enjoying great views of the Yarra Valley towards Mt Donna Buang. Participants can bring along friends and family and hit the course as a team of four. Those who don’t want to complete the course are still invited to show their support for those taking part, with plenty of activities, food and drinks on offer Adventure Dog is helping to raise funds for Coldstream’s Animal Aid, to support homeless or unwanted animals. Organisers are challenging participants aged under 18 to raise $150, those over 18 to raise $250 and for teams to raise $1100. Those who achieve their fund-raising goal will join the ranks of fundraising heroes and will be thanked with Adventure Dog - A Cross Country Challenge merchandise. AN AUTUMN DAY IN EMERALD
A DAY IN EMERALD BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT EMERALD is a charming town, nestled in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges with a lush rainforest on its doorstep and filled with the sounds of native birds. 9AM A walk through the town will delight, with the sounds of Puffing Billy providing echoes of yesteryear. The tempting aroma of coffee from one of the many excellent cafes and eateries is sure to entice visitors off the street and the plethora of great breakfast options make the most of the fresh produce available. Whether it’s home-made bircher muesli, pancakes and strawberries or the big Aussie breakfast with all the trimmings, visitors can get off to a great start. 10AM
Take a ride to the lake on Puffing Billy.
Time to explore, but first it’s time to get acquainted with the area through the local knowledge and history offered by the good folk at the Emerald Museum. Set in the beautiful and historic Nobelius Heritage Park, Emerald Museum is a local history museum and archive that tells the story of Emerald’s colourful past through displays of memorabilia, photographs and documents dating from early Aboriginal occupation to the present day. Displays include Aboriginal artifacts, gold discovery, the renowned Nobelius Nursery, early settlement, the timber industry, farming and township development. Today Emerald Museum houses and selectively displays about 2000 photographs and is a great way to learn a little bit about the local history. NOON Just around the corner is Emerald Lake, and it’s the perfect place to enjoy the colours of autumn. Emerald Lake in autumn is a riot of colour and reflection. A gift for photographers, it also hosts special events including the Easter Treasure Hunt on Easter Sunday and The Great Puffing Billy Train Race, a challenge between manpower and steampower, on 30 April.
Take a walk from Emerald to Cockatoo. Alternatively, fish and chips on a grassy spot down by Puffing Billy station is a sublime experience on a warm autumn day.
The race starts at Belgrave and finishes at Lakeside Station. More than that, the lake is widely considered the region’s premier park and is a major tourist attraction. As one of the destination points for the iconic Puffing Billy, the park offers a range of activities including picnics, walking trails, paddleboats and fishing - something for everyone. 3PM After a brisk walk or ride, it’s time to head back to town and a quick browse through some of the charming, bespoke shops before replenishing spent energy and treating the tastebuds with a delicious lunch.
What better way to relax after a busy day of exploring than sitting down and watching a play. True troupers, Gemco Players are synonymous with live theatre and entertainment in the hills and Emerald is their home. This season’s gem is Extinction, a play about passion, ethics and what it means to live with the shadow of death. The play features themes of climate change, illness, family relationships, love, ethics and the ultimate fight for survival. Gemco even provides a supper for all audience members with the actors and production team after the show.

ROADSIDE RENAISSANCE We all love eating fresh and and seasonally - it just tastes better - and when you shop local at roadside stalls in Coldstream you’re guaranteed fresh delicious produce and also a yarn with the maker, grower or farmer behind it all. There are lots of small makeshift roadside stalls in Coldstream that sell cheap and fresh fruit and veggies, so pop in for a chat and some strawberries.

PIE HIGH BY MICHAEL DORAN AWARD-WINNING wines are readily available in the Yarra Valley and now there is a growing list of award-winning pies to match. The Big Bouquet is perhaps best known for growing beautiful gerberas and its herd of alpacas strutting around the Healesville property. The homemade pies in the cafe might soon become the main attraction after winning silver and bronze awards in this year’s Great Australian Pie Competition. “We all thought our pies were pretty good but these awards show the professionals agree,� Natalie Kerst, the pie’s creator said. “I’m pretty proud that we did so well in a national competition with hundreds of entries.“ Natalie and husband Sander have owned the Big Bouquet Farm for around four years now. Together they run the farm, including the flowers, alpacas, gift shop and the cafe. “We wanted to enter the competition for the last three years but we have just been too busy to get an entry in on time. This year we got in by the skin of our teeth,� she said. “We put in our two most popular pies, butter chicken and smoky beef and we entered exactly the same pies as we sell in the cafe. We were blown away when the smoky beef won silver and the butter chicken bronze. “They are both made from my secret recipes and all our fillings are slow cooked, lots of flavour and we think we’ve nailed it.� “My grandad was a pastry chef and mum was a fabulous cook so I got my passion from there. I love to cook with my six year old son Mika, with his sister Anya, two, watching on. “We get lots of international tourists come through and often they want to eat something aussie, so a pie is the obvious choice. “I think tourism is definitely going to expand when the Yarra Valley railway goes ahead, it should give Puffing Billy a run for its money. Anything that grows tourism in the valley helps us all.� The Great Aussie Pie Competition attracted 1600 entries that were judged

CRANK UP RETURNS BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT ONE of the major historical events on the Yarra Valley calendar, Crank Up, is set to return on the weekend of 6-7 April, at the Upper Yarra Museum in Yarra Junction. Upper Yarra Valley Historical Society president Tom O’Meara said that 2019 would mark the 43rd running of the event. “Last year we had around 2200 people come through the gate, with Sunday the really busy day,” he said. “We are working on some new attractions and so far all of the exhibitors from last year are coming back. “We like to try and balance out the historical side with plenty of things to keep the kids involved. “Last year we introduced the animal petting farm, which was a big hit with families and it will be here for both Saturday and Sunday this year.”

The ever-popular exhibition by the Yarra Valley Preservation Society of running vintage engines and machinery of all types, big and small, will provide all the noise, banging and whirring that typifies every Crank Up. “As well as the old machinery, the chainsaw sculptures and steam engines there will be a team of draught horses pulling sleds around and many other working demonstrations,” he said. “The blacksmiths will be working on their forge and there is always a lot of interest in the old mechanical wood saws in action.” Community involvement is a big part of Crank Up and various group, including the CFA, Red Cross,U3A and the Gem Club will have stalls over the weekend as well many arts and crafts activities. “There will be plenty of food and drinks and our famous barbecue, which we run ourselves, will be there,” Mr O’Meara said. “We have a big raffle with around 30 prizes and the under 15s naming competition is also popular with the kids.

CULTURE TRACKS LAUNCH BY CASEY NEILL AUSTRALIAN music legend Archie Roach helped to launch Yarra Ranges Council’s Culture Tracks program for the year ahead. The Memo in Healesville hosted an event in February to preview the coming program, which features music, theatre, family programs, cinema and artist showcases. Roach, who'll perform at the Memo on 22 March, said he was impressed that there was so much talent around and choices for audiences. Members of stage production The Sapphires performed ahead of their 5 June show at the Memo and their 14 September show at Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey. Artists and creatives from across Yarra Ranges offered personal insights into their passions, life journeys and the importance of community in the shire. “It’s a pretty spectacular place to live and that comes out in all of the work we create,” artist Emma Jennings said. “We are all connected by the challenges we face because of a unique landscape. “It makes our artwork amazing but it also brings us together.” Other highlights included a performance by blindfolded rope artist Ryan Darwin, a preview of the production My Sight Their Sight which will be on at Burrinja on 5 July. The Culture Tracks program spans Burrinja, the Memo, Montrose Town Centre, Mooroolbark Community Centre, the Arts Centre in Warburton, and Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in Lilydale. Other shows coming soon include Menopause the Musical at the Memo on 9 May, Swansong - a story of grit and terror - at Burrinja on 23 May, Celtic Illusion at the Memo on 3 May and Circus Oz: Neon at Burrinja on 27 and 28 April.

SEASON OF MISTS AND MELLOW BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT THE rustling of leaves under feet in woods, the fall of an acorn on the ground and the crunch of dewy morning grass; these are the sounds of autumn in the Dandenong Ranges. The Dandenong Ranges is world famous for its amazing variety of native and introduced plant wildlife. A wonderland for green thumbs and green life enthusiasts alike, the Dandenongs have a wealth of both wild and controlled gardens for visitors to enjoy. Both native and introduced species of plants are well represented and on display in the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens in Sherbrooke and the Karwarra Australian Plant Garden in Kalorama.

The Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens were named after the original owner of the gardens and nearby property Burnham Beeches. Originally designed and maintained by head gardener Percival Trevaskis, the garden contains rockeries, pools, waterfalls and an ornamental lake. A divine spot at any time of year it is during autumn that the garden truly shines - quite literally! If you can be there during the golden hour - the hour before sunset - the sunlight strobes through the foliage of the deciduous trees which literally shine. Even the foliage of maples and beeches pale in comparison to the golden ginkgos, situated next to the furthermost pool, which create a postcard view and reflect in golden beauty off the lake’s surface. Just down the road, hidden away in a dense inlet along the winding Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, is the internationally-renowned William Ricketts Sanctuary. The sanctuary is not only one of the Dandenongs’ more iconic experiences, but one of the most inspiring and tranquil places on the mountain and features more than 90 different sculptures depicting the aboriginal people engaging with the earth in a pure forest setting. If native trees are more your style, the Karwarra Australian Native Plant Garden makes a perfect place to visit in the temperate autumn weather. With more than 1400 native species of plants, Karwarra is one of few gardens with exclusively native plants on display. Each section of the garden is as beautiful as it is educational with designs to show how plants can be used as part of a landscaping plan to achieve the most benefit for home gardens. These native plants offer a variety of colours, shapes, sizes and perfumes all throughout the year and autumn is no exception.

OLINDA’S SWEET TREAT ONLY Mine Chocolate Factory is located in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges in the beautiful Olinda township. As a chocolate factory and dessert bar, Only Mine offers a range of handmade chocolates such as their signature range of boxed chocolate, chocolate bars, hot chocolate mixes, chocolate hearts and more. A CUT ABOVE BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT MATTHIEU Dechamps knifemaker’s shop, tucked away in Mount Dandenong, appears fairly non-descript from the outside. However, taking a step inside and you’ll find its one part cluttered workshop, one part studio. Workbenches, stacks of wood, a forge and various tools and trinkets crowd the shed, and on many of the benches you’ll find Mr Dechamps trademark art on display: handmade knives. From basic kitchen knives to intricately decorated Damascus knives, there are various unique and beautiful designs to be seen. As part of the Dandenong Ranges Open Studio Mr Dechamps is opening his studio and workshop up to the public. Speaking to the Mail Mr Dechamps said that great kitchenware can make cooking a joy, and when a great knife is used the difference is noticeable. “Everything is custom made,” he said.
Over two days in March Mr Dechamps will open his workshop as part of the Dandenong Ranges Open studio. Not only will you be able to tour his unique workshop and see his various knives on display, but within each knife you can see the passion Mr Dechamps has for creating irreplaceable knives. “I can spend easily 100 or 200 hours on one single knife,” he said. “When people come to my house and work with some of the good knives they usually order one ... once you work with good knives it can be quite frustrating going back.” Other artists featuring in the Open Studios line up also include husband and wife duo Ross and Gina Miller. You can see Ross and Gina’s art and and Mr Dechamps spectacular knives at the Dandenong Ranges Open Studios event which takes place on 30 and 31 March.
“In these knives I create something that lasts for a long time ... a lot of people are used to bad knives from supermarkets, but once you have used a good knife you notice the difference straight away. “For me it’s about making a great tool for people to work with and create something with.” Most chefs will agree that knives are the most important tool when cooking, and Mr Dechamps shares that view. He individually forges every steel blade and crafts every handle from beautiful and distinctive timbers. Having discovered knife-making whilst in Scotland he has since established his knife-making workshop in Mount Dandenong and works form a shed, surrounded by lush ferns.”I was Hiking all in Scotland for quite a while and was just walking and heard someone hammering on an anvil and got curious,” he said. “I dropped my head through the shed and he took me in for a little while ... he made lots of chisels, axes and specialised tools. “I’ve always worked with tools since I was eleven and always loved really good tools, but he taught me what to expect from a good tool.”

CELEBRATING CHESTNUT SEASON BY JED LANYON THE Kalorama Chestnut Festival returns to the Dandenong Ranges on Sunday 5 May. For more than 30 years the event has offered a celebration of the chestnut season with a range of food and drinks. Hosted by Mt Dandenong Pre-School, the festival will feature plenty of stalls selling locally made handicrafts, a variety of food including roasted chestnuts, poffertjes and home-made cakes. Participants can grab a sausage sizzle lunch and try some artisan beer, mulled wine or just a tea or coffee. There’ll be plenty of fun activities for kids, such as bungy jump trampolines, mini golf, train rides, flying swings, petting zoos and live entertainment and music. Chestnuts have been grown in Australia for more than 100 years and offer high fibre and vitamin C whether they’re boiled, roasted or fried. The Ferny Creek Horticultural Society is a self-funded volunteer organisation which is constituted to promote horticulture.
GROWING A COMMUNITY THE Ferny Creek Horticultural Society aims to promote and encourage the study, practice and development of horticulture while bringing together members of the community. It will hit both targets at its autumn flower show, from noon to 4pm on Saturday 27 April and 10am to 4pm on Sunday 28 April. Established in 1932, the group was originally known as the Ferny Creek and Sherbrooke Horticultural Society. Their early shows were staged within the Ferny Creek Reserve Pavilion. In 1956 plans were made to acquire land for the society’s present site, but it was not until November 1957 that the land department advised that four acres of land would be set aside for an ornamental garden under the control of Ferny Creek. “Incidentally the word ‘Sherbrooke’ was dropped in 1952,” Ferny Creek Horticultural Society president Rex Shields said. “Money was set aside for the purchase of plants to start the new garden. “By 1965 the Department of Crown Land approved the extension of the garden by six and a half acres on the old tip site which was known as The Quarry Reserve.
“This gave the society 10 plus acres of garden. The deal was finalised in 1967. “Construction of the Horticultural Hall commenced in March 1969 thus finally giving the society a home of its own. “As of now, the society is still in a very strong position, holding three very successful shows a year, as well as a plant collector’s sale and garden expo during March each year.” The Ferny Creek Horticultural Society is a self-funded volunteer organisation that exists to promote horticulture, bring into close association members of the community having a common interest in horticulture, and provide and operate facilities for these purposes. The members support all the society’s activities and funds raised go towards maintenance of the garden and machinery, purchase of equipment and general infrastructure. AUTUMN AT ALOWYN THE annual Autumn Harvest Festival is on once again at Alowyn Gardens in Yarra Glen. This year’s event will run on Saturday 30 March. There will be hundreds of pumpkins and other produce on display. Visitors can guess the weight of the largest giant Atlantic pumpkin, listen to local performers Old Smokey and the Raven from 10.30am and hear country band TEX at 1pm. They can meander through Alowyn’s market square where local artisans will be selling a selection of the region’s best home-made wares and home grown produce. This year there will also be cooking, art and horticulture competitions with all entrance fees being donated to the Yarra Glen CFA. GOODMAN’S GOOD WIN BY CASEY NEILL “I WASN’T very well last year.” This is one heck of an understatement from Healesville winemaker Kate Goodman. She was crowned the Winemaker of the Year at the Australian Women in Wine Awards in Sydney in November last year. A year earlier, she was finishing treatment for breast cancer. Ms Goodman squirms in her seat as she speaks about the moment she was diagnosed, around June 2017. She doesn’t seem uncomfortable talking about the experience so much as conscious of not overplaying it. “I feel like I got off better than many,” she said. “I had some surgery and then I had a whole lot of radiation. “I got it early and my take home from that is ‘look after your health and take notice of yourself, and do something about it and get checked out’. “You’re better off being told there’s nothing wrong than the opposite. “I took it as an opportunity to assess my lifestyle and what things are important, how you want to spend your time, rather than dwelling on the downside. “I work here with an awesome colleague (in Caroline Mooney). She helped pick up the pieces and helped me look after my wines,” she said. She explains her feelings using an analogy about vine pest phylloxera entering the Yarra Valley. “For the region it’s a massive opportunity to change grape varieties and replant vines with even better material than was there before,” she said. Judges for the Winemaker of the Year nod knew nothing of Ms Goodman’s battle. “It’s awesome to be recognised for the hard work that I do,” she said. “You just chug along and do your own thing so it’s kind of nice to have an
Kate Goodman. external source stand up and say ‘you’re doing OK’. “It’s also based on your involvement in the wine community and what you give back,” she said. “I was on the committee of management at the Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association. “I’m a founding member of the Yarra Valley Wine Women, which is a collective of local wine women to have a louder voice and a different perspective.” She does a lot of wine show judging, though “I did step back a bit from that in the past 12 months. I wasn’t very well last year.” In Healesville, where she lives with her partner and seven-year-old son, Ms Goodman operates two labels. Goodman Wines is her range of individual vineyard wines, and Nikkal Wines are “a blend of a couple of vineyards to try to pick up the best of the Yarra Valley”.

A BERRY NICE WINE Q&A with Alison Withers, Badger Creek Blueberry Farm manager How long have you been in the industry? About 11 years or so. How did you get involved with Badger Creek Blueberry Farm? Through my partner, Eric. I joined the business in 2008 when he and his family built the shop on our property, which was an extension of their main blueberry farm in Narbethong. Tell us about the wine produced at the farm - what sets you apart? We make wine from blueberries, not grapes! Eric’s family business started off purely as a blueberry farm, however over the years it became necessary to produce products that could be sold in the winter months when fresh berries weren’t available. They started making wine from blueberries in 1992. This was using second quality berries from the farm that didn’t make the cut for premium punnets. Unfortunately they lost that farm in the Black Saturday bushfires. After the fires we changed to focus of the business from growing berries to making wine. We don’t use our own berries as we don’t produce enough anymore so the blueberries we use are sourced from New South Wales where they machineharvest their second-quality berries. Which one’s your personal favourite and why? Our blueberry methode tradionelle sparkling wine. It is floral and fruity without being too sweet, perfect for sunny weather drinking. Aside from wine, what else do you produce? We make a range of jams and other preserves from all the fruit we grow on here on the farm.
There are quite a few different fruit trees on the property that produce way more fruit than we can possibly eat during the season, so in turn we make jam! We have figs, blackberries, boysenberries, rhubarb, raspberries and plums, just to name a few. We also grow cider apples and pears for our other business, St Ronan’s Cider, which we make here with friends. Eric turns these apples into cider on site and it is available from our cellar door. How important is it for Yarra Valley wineries to do more than just produce wine? Diversity is key to keeping visitors to our area coming back as there is always something new to see and do. The valley has wine, food, gin, cheese, chocolate and so much more, there is a little something for everyone here. What makes for a memorable Yarra Valley dining experience? Spending a sunny day outside with friends, good food and glass of wine in hand.

What’s the greatest challenge facing your farm?
Tell us about your farm - where is it and what do you grow?
Labour in horticulture is a problem in the developed world but robotics and artificial Intelligence are making great advances.
My grandparents farmed in Silvan and Wandin, my parents started growing strawberries in Coldstream 45 years ago.
Locally, Queensland fruit fly is a serious pest.
We also grow mini roma tomatoes and the business has grown and diversified, all based around horticulture.
Australia’s belligerent bureaucracy is a major hindrance. I have spent over $30,000 and been hanging in limbo for three years to build a dam!
What’s your favourite way to eat your produce?
What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?
I don’t cook - I’m too lazy for additives unless someone else includes them. I like fresh, it’s best!

What is your most memorable moment in farming? Farming is always evolving and Victorian strawberry growers are fast adapters, like our use of good bugs and alternative soil treatments. Fortunately, my grandparents came to Australia and I was brought up on the eve of an era when Australian teachers taught the basics of life skills and making rational decisions and parents set boundaries. What would your last meal be? When I’m about to depart this mortal coil, my last meal will be an open house barbecue with bring a salad or veg dish to share. What’s your favourite fresh produce item (other than what you grow)?

Offering an absolute feast of various fine films, the Warburton Film Festival, hosted by the Yarra Ranges Film Society, offers some of the best and most thought-provoking movies of the past year while acknowledging and introducing up and coming directors who produce alternative yet fascinating documentaries and films.
For visitors to the Yarra Ranges, the Cameo in Belgrave and the Memo in Healesville offer an opportunity to join the locals for a movie experience in a theatre that has charming links to the past along with modern technology, sound and video.
