MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Today is Harmony Day, held annually as a day of cultural respect to everyone who calls Australia home. It is also the UN orchestrated Day for the elimination of racial discrimination. Given the hate-fuelled horrific murders that occurred last week in Christchurch, New Zealand, from which everyone is reeling, perhaps it's a good day to think about the diverse cultures that share our world and the understanding that may come from learning more about them. It was inspiring to see the turnout of passionate youth at Peregian Beach last Friday demonstrating to protect the earth and calling for political action. It reminded me of the public demands of the 70s but with iPhones. Today is also International Day of Forests. The United Nations say global deforestation continues at a rate of 13 million hectares a year and deforestation accounts for 12-20 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. Something worth demonstrating against, perhaps. ● - Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… FISHING FOR THE FUTURE
SLSQ TOLD TO SUBMIT EOI FOR THE USE OF SURF CLUB BY MARGARET MACCOLL Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) has written to Noosa Council requesting the use of the entire premises of the Peregian Beach club in order to continue maintaining voluntary patrols and a Nipper program at the beach after Noosa Council called for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from suitable not-for-profit community groups to occupy the top level of the clubhouse. At Monday's council meeting, Mayor Tony Wellington put forward a motion that SLSQ be requested to submit an EOI for the site which is for a three year period and at a cost of $301.50. He said SLSQ was not meeting its obligations to establish a surf life saving club and build bridges with the community. Cr Wellington said the clubhouse was under-utilised and council was aware of a number of community groups which wanted to use the upstairs part of the club for ocean or surf lifesaving purposes.
In its letter SLSQ acting CEO Kris Beavis said it had been their intention to rebuild the club to patrolling status in its own right. "The notion of impacting this goal by loss of footprint for the organic growth of membership does not assist in this intent," he said. "Given this area is zoned (sub-purpose) for surf lifesaving and our movement's members are the only recognised volunteer emergency undertaking such activities, it is our view that this should be recognised and respected." Cr Ingrid Jackson said the clubhouse

Questions were raised at Monday's general committee meeting over the awarding of a $45,000 contract to prepare a Noosa Fishing Futures research-based directions paper to lobbyist group Fresh Advisory owned by former Labor MP for Oxley Bernie Ripoll. Council sought quotes from three sources for the directions paper proposed to inform council on its position and actions on long-term sustainability fisheries management in Noosa River. Council received only one quote from the three requested which was from Fresh Advisory for a $45,000 contract which "was evaluated by the panel as meeting the requirements of the invitation to quote". Councillor Ingrid Jackson queried the capabilities of Fresh Advisory to undertake technical and scientific analysis which was a specific requirement of the quote. Cr Brian Stockwell said council staff had made the decision and it was inappropriate to question their appointment. Cr Jackson was told the work was being conducted by Winston Harris, a former adviser to State and Federal government ministers with portfolios in fisheries and former Queensland Seafood Industry Association spokesman. Cr Stockwell said when people provide lobbying roles it doesn't have to be their only role. He said council was seeking advice on how to lobby the state government on how to achieve the best outcomes for the river. However Cr Jackson pointed out that lobbying had not been a requirement of the contract. Mayor Tony Wellington said Winston Harris had industry experience and Bernie Ripoll had useful contacts in State Government. The fact they are registered as lobbyists has nothing to do with it, he said. ●
NBRF, backed the volunteer organisation's engagement with the community through its projects. He said the pandanus project to stem dieback in the iconic species had engaged bush care groups, council officers and individuals while a master trail project had engaged numerous groups including cycling, walking and equine. Mayor Tony Wellington defended the operations of NBRF saying everything they did was not in isolation but was complementing what Council was trying to do. ●

had been renovated at a cost of $100,000 by Noosa Heads SLS and a visit to the club had showed her the bottom half of the club was filled with equipment, smelt of petrol and was not suitable for training and gatherings which were conducted upstairs. Cr Frank Wilkie suggested the EOI process would end the division that had continued in the Peregian Beach community over the operation of the surf club. This FOI process is a fair, open and transparent way of having all the players put their cards on the table and make their intentions clear and the uses can be decided by council, he said. SLSQ will be guaranteed occupation of the downstairs section and nipper training can continue upstairs. Crs Jackson and Jess Glasgow voted against the motion at Monday's General meeting with the others supporting calls for EOIs. The matter will be decided at council's Ordinary meeting this evening at 6pm. ●
REPORT IGNITES DEBATE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Lively discussion accompanied the delivery of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) 2017/18 annual report by chair Dick Barnes to Noosa Council's General Committee meeting on Monday. The highlight of the report was its grants round of $330,000 to six small and three large projects, Mr Barnes said, while projects on the oyster reefs and prawn study from the 2015/16 grants round are ongoing. Mr Barnes said there were 54 applications submitted for the grants, showing the interest in NBRF in the community. The report states a grants committee consisting of four directors without conflicting interests was formed and approved the nine projects. Councillor Ingrid Jackson questioned the conflict of interest when three directors were also office bearers in organisations - Noosa and District Landcare, Country Noosa and Noosa Parks Association - which were recipients of 57 per cent of grant money. One of the projects initiated by Noosa Parks Association and Tourism Noosa aimed at winning World Heritage
recognition failed to proceed. Mr Barnes said the two partners fell out. They couldn't agree who was the leader of the project, he said. A further highlight of the report was the completion of the Biosphere's 10year Periodic Review at a cost of $80,000 in contract research and management consultants. The review has been submitted by council to UNESCO. Another issue raised at the meeting was the relationship between NBRF and Noosa Biosphere Community Association, tasked with educating and advising the community on the Biosphere. Mr Barnes said it had been a disastrous situation with personality clashes but was in the early stages of rebuilding. A successful Biosphere Day held last year in Kin Kin had helped rebuild the team, he said. A video produced to tell people about the Biosphere had also been successful and viewed by about 1000 people. However with a population in Noosa of about 50,000 Mr Barnes admitted there was a long way to go to inform locals about the Biosphere. t used to be seen as a rite of passage for young Australians to embark on a journey to the other side of the world to extend their careers, find fame and fortune or just see how the rest of the world lives. For Noosa's Amber Bollard it seemed the best way to pursue a singing career which had begun in Australia with the playing and recording of her original songs, performing in bands and entering talent shows. "I was 22 and I just wanted to be a famous singer," she said. Almost two decades on she has etched out a life in California rubbing shoulders with A-list celebrities while keeping alive her singing ambitions. Her advice to others though is to do their homework before making the move overseas.

In 1991 with about $500 in her pocket Amber headed to England and found herself working in a pub near Windsor that was owned by a friend's mother. With stars in her eyes and friends in South Carolina she headed on to the USA, got a job as a live-in nanny then ended up in Atlanta Georgia. Soon after arriving she was signed to a music contract with a prestigious recording label. Ultimately, as with many contracts, as she now knows, it didn't quite work out the way she was told it would and she didn't get to do any recording. Rather than risk a hefty fine she waited seven long years until the contract expired before she could focus again on her singing career. She moved to Los Angeles where things brightened up for her. Discovered on Venice Beach she was selected to appear on the television show

Blind Date. "Being Australian they just liked my personality," she said. Other television appearances followed including on American Idol before she tried her hand at radio. "I approached a local radio station (the American Radio Network) that interviewed a lot of Hollywood celebrities," she said. "I hosted a show. They loved my accent and asked would I like to co-host the show once a week." She taught herself the ropes of publicity then began getting people to come on the show known as The Jeffrey Henderson Show. Having established a reputation for her red carpet and entertainment interviews Amber has covered movie premieres and entertainment events all over Hollywood. Amber has interviewed some of the
biggest name stars in the business including Heath Ledger, Jennifer Aniston, Carmen Electra, Christian Bale, Keanu Reeves, Mariah Carey and Matt Damon. "You go and watch the movie and then you review it," she said. "A lot of the interviews were at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverley Hills. Amber joined other interviewers from television, radio and online sites to speak with directors, producers and actors. "I asked them about their ideas, how they got into character," she said. "We were meeting people you've watched all your lives on television." Despite their fame she found out most, though not all, were "just regular people". "Keanu Reeves is just like the guy next door," she said. And Mariah Carey was one of her favourites. She even dedicated one of her songs to Amber during a performance. noosatoday.com.au

Amber and Jayne Seymour In 2012 Amber set up her own public relations firm 27PR Media profiling established entertainers as well as up and coming talents. She has used her position to help other performers who are trying to break into the industry, writing articles for actors, musicians, filmmakers, technicians and others in the entertainment field. Amber's singing ambitions have never left her and since moving to LA she has continued to sing, mainly, with a band called The Vibes, in some cabaret and on the radio. She describes her style as adult contemporary pop R&B. "I'm more the old school from the 80s and 90s," she said. And recently the opportunity has presented itself to work with a producer who was instrumental in launching the careers of iconic performers Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and George Michael. Speaking this week from Noosa where she was visiting family Amber cautioned others to do their homework before going to LA for a career in entertainment. She suggests they be careful who they trust, who they let into their lives after having first hand experience of the problems foreigners can face in another country. One former flatmate became a nightmare for Amber when they developed an obsession with her, hacking her emails and stalking her, which ended up in a nasty court case." courage to not give up." The unfortunate experience was mentally draining, however in an interesting twist it enabled her to stay and work in the US.Considered a victim of crime perpetrated by an American citizen Amber was awarded a visa and was able to apply for a green card which she received. Amber believes after going through bad experiences but having helped others along the way should have won her some good karma. She said her time in overseas had presented her with wonderful opportunities but also tough times. "I did it the hard way because I wasn't prepared," she said. Amber is proud she has remained the same Aussie girl. She said in the entertainment industry there was often requests to change certain things. "They say you need to cover up these lines, you need to have breast implants," she said. "They're blatant. "When I first go there in my twenties I felt intimidated by the whole thing. "Women are different sizes and ages. It shouldn't matter." Amber wants people to know that there are other ways to do things without losing who you are, along the way. "If you stay true to yourself and stand up for your rights, then people will respect you more in the end for being yourself," she said. "You can't forget where you come from, you are part of where you come from." â—?

NEWS NEW FISHERIES LAWS CRACKDOWN New fisheries laws passed by the Palaszczuk Government mean Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers will have increased powers to crack down on black market fishers. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said making sure fishers followed the rules was critical to maintaining fish stocks. "Our reforms are a crucial step in building a legacy of a sustainable fishery for our children and grandchildren and protecting jobs in our commercial and recreational fishing industries," Mr Furner said. KOALA HABITAT AFFECTS GENES The plight of Noosa’s koala population, and the way scientists are using detection dogs and genetic research to improve conservation methods, will be the topic of the next Noosa Parks EnviroForum to be held on 27 March. Guest speaker Katrin Hohwieler will discuss how she and other researchers on the Sunshine Coast have enhanced their methods of mapping koala habitats and populations using specially trained detection dogs to locate koala scat. This in turn has enabled her to study the degradation of genetic diversity with fragmentation of habitat and the genetic connectivity of koalas. Ms Hohwieler, as a representative of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Global Change Ecology Group, will
the beat and we've made sure they have the powers they need to come down hard on black marketers." Mr Furner said the Sunshine Coast was not immune to black marketers attempting to plunder the public fishing resource for their own illegal gain. "Just a couple of years ago two recreational fishers copped an $8000 fine after being caught on Teewah Beach at Noosa with more than 3500 pipis," Mr Furner said. "The possession limit for pipis in Queensland is 50 per person so the two fishers had in their possession 3491 more pipis than is legally permissible." Mr Furner said, however, that the QBFP was reporting increased compliance by
fishers following operations in the Noosa district targeting pipi possession limits. "To date in the current financial year, QBFP Noosa officers have undertaken eight patrols to the Teewah Beach area either as part of scheduled patrol operations or in response to complaints," Mr Furner said. "During these patrols, officers inspected 74 people and found all complied with possession limits for molluscs. "QBFP will continue patrols in the area in response to increasing calls from the community to protect fisheries resources and support for our compliance monitoring activities through the Fishwatch reporting service." ●
discuss the achievements so far of the “Koala Forever Noosa” project. This will be the second Noosa Parks EnviroForum, after the monthly event was launched in February.Noosa Parks EnviroForum organiser, Lyn Graham, said the events were an opportunity to bridge the gap between locals and experts. “We have some of the top environmental scientists in the world living right here on the Sunshine Coast and these forums allow community members to meet them one-on-one, as well as listen to them speak to the group about their work,” she said. Ms Hohwieler has studied biology and ecology at universities in Germany, Vienna and Norway. Her PhD studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast are focused on koala conservation and more specifically, how the destruction of
koala habitats can affect their genetics. The EnviroForum will be held on 27 March at Noosa Parks Environmental Centre, 5 Wallace Drive, Wallace Park, Noosaville from 5.30pm. Entry $5. ●
HORROR RISE IN QUEENSLAND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE BREACHES Queensland has broken its own poor record for the number of domestic violence order breaches within the past 12 months. New data released by the Queensland Police Service revealed more than 28,200 breaches have been recorded in the past 12 months which is a rise of ten per cent, compared to February 2018. Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Stephen Bennett said Mt Isa, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast, Logan, Ipswich, Brisbane and the Gold Coast have all experienced substantial increases. "This follows the shocking revelation that over 1,300 Queensland children were harmed in 2016-17 after they were deemed safe by Child Safety," he said. Data shows that the Wide Bay Burnett region has recorded 1,840 domestic violence order breaches within the past 12 months up to February 2019. This is an extra 130 breaches compared to the year before, earning a rise of 7.6 per cent. The Sunshine Coast region has had a 14.6 per cent rise in breaches over the past year, with 1,250 cases recorded for the year up to February 2019. TAFE USED AS A JOB TRAINING SITE Noosa TAFE has found a purpose providing a space for jobseekers to gain skills though the building's future is still undecided. Last week Noosa MP Sandy Bolton and Mayor Tony Wellington joined Noosa Community Training Centre (NCTC) chief executive Arthur Hartley and several trainees at the TAFE site at Tewantin where they were working on a State Government Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative."It's great to see that the NCTC has already assisted some 257 people to help them gain skills that prepare them for jobs across a variety of industries, including construction, hospitality and business. "Already 125 of them have found work," Ms Bolton said. "It's especially exciting to see these people undertaking a project on the decommissioned TAFE site in readiness for its potential new owners - Noosa Council.'
Noosa MP Sandy Bolton, Arthur Hartley with Crs Tony Wellington and Frank Pardon. At present the TAFE is still owned by the State Government, Noosa Council's Corporate Services Director Michael Shave said. "Last year we made an offer to purchase the site. We are still waiting for the State's
response to our offer," he said. State government funding of $484,200 will enable NCTC to deliver two new projects assisting up to 48 locals in obtaining on the job skills and certification, Ms Bolton said.
NCTC have worked with local unemployed people for more than 30 years as they transition to employment. Mr Hartley said being involved in the renovation and refurbishment of the old TAFE buildings would give the trainees real skills by working on a community project and get them ready for entry-level jobs. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said the funding would offer genuine on-the-job training. "There's nothing like getting on-site experience under professional supervision," he said. Queenslanders for Work Traineeship program funds the wages of the trainees and provides support services that helps those unemployed overcome their challenges in getting a job. SELF-PORTRAIT OF A DREAMER
BY ABBEY CANNAN
Local artist Stefan Koch unveiled his entry into the prestigious Archibald Portrait Prize to a crowd at his studio in Noosaville on Thursday 14 March. Around 65 people attended the event to view Stefan's entry titled 'Self-portrait of a dreamer', a 1.8-metre-long portrait created on acrylic and mixed media on linen. When describing the portrait Stefan said, "It may look as if I was still dreaming of being the boss, but my dream is about freedom." "We should all have the freedom to be who we are and not bound by restrictions imposed by where you were born or which bloodline you belong to. "Happiness is only achieved once you reach your own internal freedom and if we all can achieve internal happiness, the world will be a more tolerant, more peaceful, more intelligent and therefore richer place for all to live." The winner of the prize is announced in May with a first-place award of $100,000, although Stefan said he would be happy to just be a finalist with his portrait displayed in the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Stefan has lived with his wife in Noosa for 35 years after spending his earlier years attending school in Rome and University in Switzerland.

TEEN LEAD VIOLIN, GRANDAD ON VIOLA Internationally acclaimed teenage violin virtuoso Beatrice Colombis will be joined on stage for the first time by her grandfather Paul McDonald during two electrifying Noosa Orchestra concerts this month. The Noosa resident said he was delighted that Maestro Antoni Bonetti had invited his 15-year-old Sydney-based granddaughter to be the feature soloist for Noosa Orchestra's autumn concerts at Noosa and Cooroy on March 24 and 31 (respectively). Paul said he was honoured to be playing viola for Noosa Orchestra, which will support Beatrice in her two solo performances of Rondo Capriccioso and Allegro Vivace-Khachaturian. "The audience is bound to go wild for the fiery, gypsy-inspired Rondo Capriccioso," he said. "It's one of those instantly recognisable musical scores, which everyone loves while sometimes not even knowing the name of the beloved piece. "Beatrice also loves playing the Khachaturian Violin Concerto , it's an exciting piece with a fast movement at the end, a real 'edge of your seat' musical moment." Musicality is certainly in this talented teen's genes. Her Australian mother, Laura, and Italian father, Mauro, met while studying piano at the Moscow Conservatorium. Beatrice picked up her first violin, a diminutive '64th', at age three and learnt to play by the Suzuki method. At 13 Beatrice was leading the Ascham School orchestra (where she is a full music scholar) and at 14 she attained her L.Mus.A Diploma with Distinction. Beatrice is also an accomplished singer. Last year she toured with the Sydney children's choir, Gondwana Voices, in the Baltic States and Iceland. SUNSHINE COAST COUPLE WINS A COOL $200,000 BY ABBEY CANNAN Life just got a whole lot brighter for a couple on the Sunshine Coast who discovered they're suddenly $200,000 richer. The Queenslanders won the guaranteed first prize of $200,000 in Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw 1245, drawn on Monday 11 March. The beaming pair recalled how they discovered their good fortune while confirming their win with a Golden Casket official. "We realised we'd won yesterday afternoon. I just decided to scan all my tickets on the app on my phone," the woman explained. "I got a notification saying 'wahoo you've won'. I thought it must have been $12 or a free ticket or something like that. I couldn't believe it was actually $200,000, I had to get my husband to check I wasn't seeing things. It was amazing." The woman joked she had predicted it would be a winning week. "We were having a bad beginning to the
week and we were trying to laugh it off and I said to my husband 'don't worry about it, we will win the lotto and it will be fine'," she laughed. "I can't believe I called it ... It's just amazing to know what it's like to win, it's just a dream. It takes the heat off financially, that's for sure. "We'll pay a few bills and take our beautiful family on a holiday as well." The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, purchased their winning entry of one random number at Nextra Swan Newsagency, Shop 137 Sunshine Plaza, 154164 Horton Parade, Maroochydore. Nextra Swan Newsagency manager Donna Arthur said she was excited to hear a local couple had taken home the first prize. "This is great news. We haven't sold a major prize-winning entry for a little while so it's great to start a winning streak. I love it when these huge prizes go to our local customers, it feels like we've won ourselves. We wish them all the best," Donna said. ● noosatoday.com.au

STUDENTS STRIKE FOR CLIMATE ACTION BY MARGARET MACCOLL Chanting "we will stop Adani" and holding up placards more than 1000 students walked out of schools from Gympie to Maroochydore and Nambour to descend on Peregian Beach on Friday to call attention to climate change. The Sunshine Coast School Strike 4 Climate was part of an international student strike involving more than 60 Australian cities and towns and more than 100 countries demanding politicians take action on climate change. Local organiser Year 12 student Shellie Joseph spoke to the gathering, calling for politicians to listen to their demands to stop mining coal, gas and oil and in particular Adani Mining's proposed coal mine in the Galilee Basin in central Queensland. "Our civilisation is being sacrificed for a small number of people to keep making enormous amounts of money," she said. She said Adani would likely deliver only 1500 jobs not the promised 16,000 jobs, would use 12 billion litres of water each year, expel 200,000 tones of CO2 into the air annually and dump its waste into the waters of the Great Barrier Reef. Future generations will be asking their grandparents what was the Great Barrier Reef, she said. "People are protesting on the streets," she said. "Nobody wants Adani." Shellie said her education was very important to her but she was willing to put her study on hold to fight for the future of the planet. "Solve the climate crisis," she said. "We already have the solutions. We just need to wake up and change." Students, parents and teachers joined the protest. They put their signatures to a banner, signed letters calling for action from politicians. More than 20 unions across Australia endorsed the students strike action and more than 800 academics signed an open letter of solidarity with the student strikers. â—?

MUNCH ON SATURDAY A FEAST FEST BY MARGARET MACCOLL The promise of good food and music was too hard to resist on Saturday for locals and visitors who streamed into the Imperial Hotel and Eumundi Brewery to enjoy the Munch Festival. SPOTLIGHT ON MELANOMA A small spot of flakey skin which would not moisturise seemed a bit weird to Buddinabased triathlete Cathie Wynne, so when she next took her son Baylin to the doctor she showed him the small rough spot near her hairline. The doctor looked at the spot with a magnifying glass and decided it looked suspicious enough to freeze it off and see what happened. Two years and four surgeries later the highly aggressive squamous cell carcinoma Cathie is facing the prospect of radiation therapy. It had grown quickly in width and formed a large tumour, which went down into the layers of Cathie's dermis layer. "It was getting bigger and deeper after each operation, despite several attempts to remove all the cancer," she said. "After the first surgery I was really positive and just thought they'd get rid of it and I'd be back to normal. "After things progressed and it wasn't going away, it really rattled me because I have always been healthy and kept a good balance. "It made me feel completely out of control; it was all so much out of my hands. "My two boys were really devastated and quite upset about what it meant - the word 'cancer' is so scary." In the most recent fourth surgery last month she required skin grafting from

HAIR RAISING CANCER FUNDRAISER IS A REAL CLOSE SHAVE More than 600 Good Shepherd students and staff filled the College's HPE Centre today to cheer on the 17 brave students who had their hair shaved or "chopped" to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation's World's Greatest Shave. So far, the College has raised more than $10,000 - and is still counting - to help find a cure for blood cancer. This extraordinary effort is a result of a month of fundraising efforts by students from Prep to Year 12, working together to raise as much money as they could. Event coordinator Jo Anna Morrison said the students showed great enthusiasm towards the event and were very competitive in their fundraising efforts. "The students dedicated their break times to bake sales, drink stalls, a sausage sizzle as well to their own individual fundraising efforts," she said. "The students have done an exceptional job at exceeding the fundraising goal we set this year through their amazing efforts and perseverance."
"In addition, the College had an online donation portal through the Leukaemia Foundation's website which was very successful as well." The longer hair that was sacrificed at the event will go to the Variety Foundation, which uses the hair to make wigs for children in need due to varying medical conditions. "We were overwhelmed by the number of students who were happy to give up their hair for a good cause," Ms Morrison said. "Traditionally, students from this age
group might be a little uneasy about shaving their hair off, yet both boys and girls were excited about the fact that they could make a difference." Along with the traditional shaving of
hair, for a gold coin donation, students from Prep to Year 12 had the opportunity to have 'crazy' hair and wear free dress for the day to show their support, with all proceeds going towards the final tally. ●

DREDGING ILLEGAL IN RIVER There is false information circulating in our Noosa community about commercial fishing and prawn trawling in our paradise known as the Noosa River and Lakes System. These rumour mongers claim “that commercial beam trawling has been dredging the bottom of the river and lakes damaging the habitat of benthic communities that are a food source for fish, crabs and prawns.” This claim is untrue and seems deliberately designed to damage the reputations of local hard-working commercial fishing families and their industry which has legally operated in our system since the mid-1950s with legally approved fishing and trawling apparatus and who have a serious interest in maintaining a healthy river and sustainable fishing industry. Fish Habitat Management Laws ensure that damage to the river bottom and banks incurs significant penalties. These laws make it clear that “dredges” are not legal apparatus in our Noosa River paradise system. The Noosa community deserves to be told the truth about our river. It does not deserve to be fed deliberately false and exaggerated information which seems to be part of a deliberate campaign to alarm our community about the state of our river in order to bring it under control of local authority. Noosa Council is currently spending an enormous amount of money on consultants to enable this goal to be achieved. This may be a good idea or not? But it is deceitful in the extreme to justify it with demonstrably false and misleading information. Trevor Clarey, Boreen Point.
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL NOOSA EVENT Which are so beneficial to our economy. The VONU Surfing Festival. We even managed to put on the best waves ever for them. Several marquees erected on our main beach and surrounding public land helped to distract from our sad looking beach. The biggest marquee was actually a big drinking trough promoting VONU beer, made in Fiji. I believe we have a couple of excellent breweries in Noosa? Why promote beer from Fiji here? It was manned by bar staff and security guards; none of the ones I spoke to from this area. So, what did we get out of it? A week of traffic snarls, lots of rubbish left everywhere every day, the showers on the beach in use non-stop, I had several times people sleeping in cars in our little street ... Can we please get some figures as of how much the promoters had to pay to lease our public land?
LENSCAPE
Kev Long captured this rare daylight sighting of the usually nocturnal Common Ringtail Possum, at his home in Sunshine Beach. If you'd like to submit a photo to Lenscape please email the jpeg to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au How much of the takings of VONU beer sold did we get? How much does the clean-up cost? Gabriela Geispitzheim, Noosa Heads
RENEWABLES NOT MORE RELIABLE I was reading Steve Hall’s response on climate change and came upon his pearl of wisdom that renewables are “more reliable”. They are not Steve - every publication on renewables describe them as intermittent or the complete opposite of reliable. I am not sure if this was a slip of the pen or just padding things out hoping readers would not notice. In any event it was simply a lie. Moreover with wind and solar contributing less than 12 per cent to the grid there are only two sources of reliable baseload power, coal and nuclear, but little if any recognition of this. It concerns me that the headlong rush to unreliable wind and solar will render Australia uncompetitive, second class and with the world's highest power prices. Anyway, with wind turbines now topping 500 feet perhaps we could pop one on Hastings Street and people could get warm and fuzzy looking up at it while sipping their soy lattes. Peter Bayliss, Noosa

PLASTIC GREATEST POLLUTER My goodness Steve Hall, you do have faith in ‘experts’! Yes, there are experts, their expertise gained by personal practical experience. There are also people who say they are experts because they have a degree to say they are, regardless of their capabilities. Climate change has been happening since climate began and I was so grateful to see some common sense from Jen Oakley and Janet Gibson. Why do you jeer at someone who has done a ‘modicum of research’ when, with respect, you appear to have done none, trusting the 97 per cent you have read about somewhere, to do your thinking for you? One day we may have enough sustainable renewable energy to supply Australia, but at the moment we don’t so we will need to use coal until we do. But when are we going to seriously turn our attention to the main polluter of our planet? Plastic! If anything man-made is contributing to global warming, it is plastic. Many peoples who were once self-sufficient now rely on plastic packaged food and burn the plastic to reduce its volume and create cheap fuel. What is that doing to the global atmosphere? More and more plastic goes into our oceans. Floating plastic changes the oceans networks. The micro systems in the seas are complex beyond understanding. But what we do know is that large pieces of plastic break down to smaller and smaller particles by disrupted microbial systems which cause new unrelated systems to form from plastic. Plankton feeding animals now consume more plastic than plankton. We are killing our oceans and their inhabitants. We have the technology to manufacture material more durable and long lasting, as well as re-useable, from hemp, straw and many other easily grown weeds, and plants. So why aren’t we? Elizabeth Cameron, Tewantin
WORDS FROM ENVIRONMENTAL HERO Energy and power prices are a hot topic in the lead-up to the federal election, with Labor and the Greens championing a move to more renewables to combat climate change and the Coalition Government under fire for wanting to include reliable baseload power generation in the energy mix. Well, a dedicated climate change believer, California’s Michael Shellenberger, who is a
Time Magazine “Hero of the Environment“ and president of Environmental Progress, gives reasons “Why renewables can’t save the planet“. In his own words, from a recent article on the Quillette website: “I decided I wanted to dedicate myself to addressing climate change. I was worried that global warming would end up destroying many of the natural environments that people had worked so hard to protect. “I thought the solutions were pretty straightforward: solar panels on every roof, electric cars in every driveway, etc. The main obstacles, I believed, were political. And so I helped organise a coalition of America’s largest labor unions and environmental groups ... we would not only prevent climate change but also create millions of new jobs in a fastgrowing high-tech sector. “Our efforts paid off in 2007 when Barack Obama embraced our vision. Between 2009'15, the U.S. invested $150 billion dollars in renewables and other forms of clean tech. But right away we ran into trouble. “ Electricity from solar roofs costs about twice as much as electricity from solar farms, but solar and wind farms require huge amounts of land. That, along with the fact that solar and wind farms require long new transmissions lines, and are opposed by local communities and conservationists trying to preserve wildlife, particularly birds. “Another challenge was the intermittent nature of solar and wind energies. When the sun stops shining and the wind stops blowing, you have to quickly be able to ramp up another source of energy... ...Without large-scale ways to back-up solar energy, California has had to block electricity coming from solar farms when it’s extremely sunny, or pay neighboring states to take it from us so we can avoid blowing-out our grid. “Despite what you’ve heard, there is no “battery revolution” on the way, for technical and economic reasons ... and “What kills big, threatened, and endangered birds - birds that could go extinct - like hawks, eagles, owls, and condors, are wind turbines. “In fact, wind turbines are the most serious new threat to important bird species to emerge in decades. The rapidly spinning turbines act like an apex predator which big birds never evolved to deal with. “Solar farms have similarly large ecological impacts ... you have to clear the whole area of wildlife. “In order to build one of the biggest solar farms in California, the developers hired biologists to pull threatened desert tortoises from their burrows, put them on the back of pick-up trucks, transport them, and... many ended up dying. “As we were learning of these impacts, it gradually dawned on me that there was no amount of technological innovation that could solve the fundamental problem with renewables. “You can make solar panels cheaper and wind turbines bigger, but you can’t make the sun shine more regularly or the wind blow more reliably. I came to understand the environmental implications of the physics of energy. In order to produce significant amounts of electricity from weak energy flows, you just have to spread them over enormous areas. In other words, the trouble with renewables isn’t fundamentally technical - it’s natural. “Dealing with energy sources that are inherently unreliable, and require large amounts of land, comes at a high economic cost..." So, again be careful what you wish for - and that includes the students striking for “100 percent renewables.“ If it doesn’t work for California, Germany or other nations going all out for renewables, why would it work for us? STYLISH AND AFFORDABLE LIVING BY ABBEY CANNAN WITH property prices escalating in Noosa, it is hard to find a place this impressive at this price point. The property for sale at 21/60 Hofmann Drive Noosaville definitely represents value buying, as it would be cheaper than paying rent for a first home buyer and there would be a great rental return as an investment property. The white veneer of the complex emulates a clean and smart design for these near new townhouses, with immaculate, modern interiors. The townhouse presents as a wonderful home alternative for singles and couples, those wishing to downsize, or as a great investment with good rental returns. With proximity to Noosa Civic Centre a mere bike ride away, and a short fiveminute drive to stunning beaches and the river, this newly developed complex ticks a lot of boxes. The new brewery is around the corner, along with Belmondos Market which is perfect for a morning expresso. The highlights in this complex include the extremely low body corporates of $1450 p.a., the fact that each owner can have a pet and that the property backs onto a reserve for peace and serenity. The complex known as Forest Lodge is neat, tidy and private and allows for visitor carparking. A single lock-up garage has been cleverly designed to be a part of the entrance, yet not obtrusive or offensive. There are two bedrooms upstairs with new carpet, a 2-way modern bathroom, with a powder room downstairs, modern appliances throughout, and a lovely courtyard to make your own outdoor space look amazing, with a rear gate to walking tracks. WHAT’S ON DON’T MISS AUSTRALIA’S FINEST GUITAR DUO Regarded as one of Australia's finest guitar duo's, the Grigoryan Brothers will take audiences to another dimension at council's Venue 114 at 7.30pm on Friday 29 March. Slava and Leonard Grigoryan take the classical guitar into genres such as jazz, folk and contemporary music while drawing emotion and connection to crowds with every note. While it is their individual and combined artistry that brings the music alive, they are forever grateful to the composers and arrangers who have provided the framework from which they speak.
For this performance, Slava and Leonard are honouring those past, present and future who have provided the fuel for their fire by performing some favourite works from their back-catalogue of recordings. They will also be performing their own compositions and arrangements, including a selection from the soundtrack to the movie A Boy Called Sailboat, which they wrote and recorded and is due for global release in 2019. The movie has already won a number of awards, including best Best Director and Best Screenplay at the prestigious Boston Film Festival.
Audiences will also hear works from Slava and Leonard's next recording project of Handel keyboard suites, masterfully arranged for them by their father Edward, which is to be released in late 2019. Tickets are $40 per person, $35 for concessions, $25 for tertiary and high school students. To book, visit www. venue114.com.au or call 5413 1400 (phone charges do apply). Venue 114 is located at 114 Sportsmans Parade, Bokarina. Event parking is free and public transport is available nearby. ●
The Grigoryan Brothers will play Venue 114 at 7.30pm on Friday 29 March.
FRENCH FOLK BAND PLAYS POMONA Award-winning French/Balkan folk band MZAZA will perform at the Majestic Theatre in Pomona on Sunday 14 April. Led by enchanting French-Sephardic vocalist Pauline Maudy, these six musicians from Bosnia, Latvia, Greece, France and Australia have been known to deliver inspired performances driven by their eclectic backgrounds and European influences. Recently returned from recording a third studio album in Greece, the group is looking forward to reuniting with their faithful Sunshine Coast following. The band is also offering a singing workshop lead by MZAZA front-woman Pauline who will share her French and Ladino (Jewish-Spanish) ancestry
through song. Two-time Queensland Music Award winners MZAZA describe their music as, "Balkan French sounds for sophisticated folk lovers around the world." After forming 15 years ago the group has toured around Australia, Europe and visited the airwaves internationally. The musicianship of MZAZA is realised with accordion, violin, percussion, double bass and Flamenco guitar and celebrates diversity, the old and the new, the familiar and the foreign, through timeless melodies. The Majestic Theatre is located at 3 Factory Street, Pomona. For more information visit www.eventfinda.com. ●

TAKE A LEAP INTO ARTS AND CRAFTS "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever" said Mahatma Gandhi. But just how difficult is it for us as we get older to take that first step into learning something new? Is it our fear of failing or perhaps daunting anxiety about joining new groups? "Cast those feelings aside", says Noosa Arts and Crafts Association president, Gabi Dick, "and come and learn or develop your interests in all things arts and crafts with us. "Sometimes people can think you need to already have certain skills to become involved in one of our 30 plus groups." "Not at all. Our members range from true beginners through to talented professionals and everything in between. And everyone is very helpful whether
you are a novice or somewhere along the path to a master artist or craftsperson." "After all this was how I started here over 20 years ago. I had no prior learning and joined a watercolour class with artist Hollie Simpson. Since then I have developed my skills in all art mediums and other areas as well as made some great friendships - all here at Noosa Arts and Crafts." Noosa Arts & Crafts are encouraging residents to come to visit them at Wallace House any day Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm and spend some time checking out the variety of creative activities. Timeslots of each group can be found on the website www.noosaartsandcrafts.org.au â—?

Heads of Noosa Brewing Co. was awarded its first two silver medals for their beers today at the Queensland Beer Awards. The awards are part of the Royal Queensland Food & Wine Show held annually. This was the first time entering a beer awards for the newly opened Sunshine Coast brewery and needless to say they are pretty happy with the results. The Japanese Lager and the Summer Dusk Lager have only been available from the brewery Taproom and select venues around Noosa for the last 6 weeks. Head Brewer and Co-owner Lance Masterton was nervous about having his creations officially judged for the first time but is pleased with the result. "It's always hard putting something you've crafted out there to be critiqued like this but it's also great to get some feedback from people outside of your own friends and family." Lance said. "While a silver medal doesn't quite reflect the exceptional response we've received from the locals so far, it is still something to be proud of and we can always shoot for gold next year." The Heads of Noosa Taproom is now open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 11 AM. The first two beers will also available in bottles in the coming weeks. LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
CHRISTCHURCH: THE UGLY AFTERSHOCK I don’t find myself in agreement with Peter FitzSimons all that often, but in the wake of the unspeakable Christchurch tragedy, I’m completely on-side with his assessment of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern as a “leader for our times”. Fitzy went on: “This nation needs more leadership, across all levels, in all parties, like that provided by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in the wake of Christchurch’s mosque massacres.” Hear, hear. It was impossible not to be moved by the emotion, calm, and inner strength of this young woman who had just seen perhaps the greatest tragedy in New Zealand history go down on her watch, when she looked at the cameras and told the world on Friday night: “To the people who did this: you may have chosen us, but we utterly reject and condemn you.” And what do we get? We get Queensland Senator Fraser Anning, who put out a press
release within hours of the massacre saying that it “highlights the growing fear within our community, both in Australia and New Zealand, of the increasing Muslim presence”. Words fail me. This from a creep who got his seat in the red chamber on a handful of votes and a bunch of dodgy ratbag preferences, following the dual-citizenship disqualification of One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts, and now claims to represent us while conducting whatever it is that he conducts from various rabbit-holes of right wing extremism in Melbourne. Well, you don’t represent me, mate! Egging is assault, of course, and I can’t condone the act of a teenager who made a good point in a bad way. But all that sorry little episode showed was that Anning surrounds himself with thugs and still has a handy left jab for a man approaching 70, and that might be part of the problem. The descendant of Central Queensland squatters Gary Propper, 1967. Photo Surfline.

In his short and inglorious political career, Anning’s views on race and immigration have proven so extremist that he has fallen out with both One Nation and the Katter Party. Say no more. The WSL world qualifying tour kicked off in earnest in Sydney this week, with NSW’s biggest surfing event, the Vissla Sydney Pro at Manly getting underway with scudding showers and a dropping swell. Manly comes alive under the Norfolk pines for this event, with concerts, shaping contest, skate bowl and general hoopla to complement the hundreds of heats being contested at North Steyne. But this week the frenzy is even more intense than normal, because for the first time in my memory - and I did write a book about the bugger! Kelly Slater, the greatest of all time (GOAT), is starting his last full world tour season with a go-out at a qualifying event. At 47, Kelly is more than twice the age of most of the competitors in the Vissla Pro, some of whom were born in a different century, but that doesn’t mean he can’t still win it, nor does it mean that Manly is going any less nuts about having him in town. There was, I’ve heard, a hefty appearance fee involved, but money isn’t everything when you’ve been on top as long as he has,
Jacinda Ardern comforts family of the victims. and since he bought a humble flat at Avalon 25 years ago - in one of his first real estate acquisitions as a world champ - Sydney’s northern beaches have been one of several places around the globe that Kelly thinks of as home. And with friends and mentors from those early years not getting any younger, and in uncertain health, I’m sure he’ll relish his time in town. At the Vissla Pro last year I hosted the inaugural Midget Farrelly Lifetime Achievement Award presentation breakfast on behalf of Surfing NSW and the Sydney Business Chamber, when Midget’s widow Beverlie presented it to Layne Beachley, and I’m delighted to have been invited as a guest for this year’s, when Kelly Slater will present the “Midget” to four-times world champion Mark Richards. More on that next week. Can Kelly beat the kids in two-foot Manly slop? Oh, I doubt it, but I can’t wait to see him back in the jersey, doing what GOAT does best. FOOTNOTE: Kelly may be the biggest surf star to ever come out of Cocoa Beach, Florida, but he wasn’t the first. That honour belongs to flamboyant hot-dogger Gary Propper, who was at his peak in the years before Kelly was born, and who passed away last weekend, aged 72. A talented artist, Propper faded away from the surf scene in the 1980s, but re-emerged in the ‘90s as one of the producers of the unlikely hit movie series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This opened up new fame and a new career, but it didn’t make Gary rich. He and his partners filed suit against Warner Brothers in 2015 for more than $10 million in unpaid royalties. ● noosatoday.com.au

TIGERS SEASON OPENER AT HOME The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers face Coorparoo this Saturday night at home in the season opener for 2019. Under the new tutelage of dual premiership skipper Adam Bovalino, the playing group look and feel as fit as they have in years. "The boys over the pre-season have just been outstanding. Our fitness guru's David Barnes and Scott Findlater have come up with a running program that just has them as fit as I've seen," Bovalino said. "Our pre season form showed that and whilst we've kept a pretty similar list to last year, our
youngsters coming through have been so noticeable and really exciting. Add to that, getting back class like Riley Buntain, Ryan Jeffrey and Lachie Cameron, I reckon we are in a really good position to have a crack." Bovalino's Tiger premiership coach and mentor back in 2010/11 Wayne Fletcher continues as a senior assistant coach whilst the Tigers welcome back ex-senior coach and 1994 club champion Craig 'Swinger ' Horwood as a senior assistant. Damian Walsh who had a very successful playing and coaching career throughout country
Australia comes on board as a forward coach with gun midfielder Tyler Stack named as a playing assistant coach for season 2019. "As well as Stack I'd be still looking for names like Laskey, Fitzpatrick, Hill, Woods, McDonald and Maher to be right in the action whilst watch the youngsters in O'Dwyer, Pettigrove, Johnston and McKenzie as they begin their senior careers," Bovalino said. The reserve grade is being coached by ex Holbrook stalwart Tony Brennan who is relishing the opportunity and will have great
help in Geoff Tarling and Scotty McKenzie as assistants. All in all very exciting times at the Rococo Noosa Tigers AFC with a fantastic new kitchen enterprise Surf Street Eats operating at the club (no meals over $10 on a Thursday night) and plenty of great guest speakers coming up starting with Mark 'Jacko' Jackson and Peter Bosustow this Saturday night from 4pm Reserve grade starts at 4pm pm whilst the seniors start at 6pm. Go Tigers! Pittsy ●
DRAGONS FIRST HOME GAME WINS PRESIDENTIAL PRAISE Great effort from all the players in the Eumundi Dragons under 9's. From the kickoff the boys all quickly remembered their positions from last season with new player Lucas quickly adapting to the game. In the first half, the boys played extremely well with lots of strong defence and good runs for the try line. The second half saw a few try's scored with some excellent tackles to save a few. Some really positive vibes are present in the team with room for a few more players in the coming weeks.
U8S BY U8S MANAGER, ANDREW HILLHOUSE Eumundi Dragons U8s played their first game of tackle today in a spirited performance against a well drilled Mathew Flinders. Even though the game was a development round where the referee from Mathew Flinders provided step by step instruction and commentary to both teams, the boys threw themselves into it. They held a good formation, ran directly (mostly) backed each other up and passed to support. They started to get the hang of the rules of the ruck and defended and tackled well. Brooklyn Griggs marshalled the players in the back line made some good tackles, runs and tries. Jack Cooper showed no fear when going for the larger opposition, made some great runs and a score. Josh Kuczynski's first game of rugby showed he will be a great asset to the team with some strong runs through the middle, defence and keenness to get involved. George Hillhouse produced some length of the field runs, good backing up, effective tackles and ball foraging. Tristian Youd from the under 7s helped out admirably in the first half, making some great runs and passes. Great effort by all and coach Dan Cooper.

The future of our mighty little club seems assured if the performances of our U6s today at Eumundi are anything to go by. Even though this game was the first Rugby that some of them had played all team members did themselves and our club proud. All players contributed with strong performances from Owen, Nya, Jax, Henry, Johnny and Nixon. One of the key features of the Dragons play was that all players understood the importance of running in the correct direction, passing the ball backwards to a team mate when tagged and tagging opposition ball carriers on the waist with both hands . Watch for our Dragons U6s to be a force to be reckoned with in 2019. ●

The U7's had a great start to 2019 with their first game against Caloundra followed by a second game against Brothers. The team worked really well together and showed great effort despite getting a real work out with some players involved in three games through the morning. Tristan, Zac, Jax, Nya and Henry all had games before helping out Maya and CJ in the U7's. The team gelled really well, showing great support for each other and reflecting Lukes good pre-season work. Tristan, Zac and Cj had some great runs with some awesome support on defence from Nya, Jax, Henry and Maya. Onward and upward for the mighty U7's.

Eumundi Dragons Club president Doug Toms praised the efforts of all involved in ensuring the first home games of the 2019 season were such a success. "The players in all of our five teams had a great day," he said. "All enjoyed the contest on the Rugby field and played in a hard but sportsperson like manner."The fields looked great, the canteen ran well providing superb food, including the homemade backing slices and cupcakes raising money for our club."U10s by U10s' manager, Pamela Campbell-Jones U10 Dragons kicked off their development round games at home this weekend, in a closely fought game against Brothers. The Dragons started with a roar in the first half, with three unanswered tries, two runaway tries coming from newcomer Jai Clifford. Brothers bounced back with some tries of their own and we went to half time Dragons ahead 4 tries to 3. The second half was a tighter game and the whole team worked well together. There were strong runs up the field made by Will and Jack Sparks, Tom Wiles, Max JohnsonThompson and Tristan Adams. Patrick O'Grady, Alex Eaton and Craig Yaxley tackled well. Jet Herbert added to his two first half tries with another in the second half and made two conversions, taking the team total to 29. Brothers managed another three tries in the second half and pipped the Dragons at the post with a total of 30. It is looking like 2019 will be a strong year for the U10 Dragons as they continue to improve with the support of their coaches and club.

SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND FOR CLUBS Last weekend competitors from our local surf clubs Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads travelled to Broadbeach on the Gold Coast to take part in the Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships; and both teams made their presence felt. In what was described as a small surf Noosas currant Australian Open Ironwoman Champion Lana Rogers, added another title to her credit by winning the Queensland Open Ironwoman title. Earlier in the day Lana won silver in the open belt race, silver in the open surf race and a bronze in the surf teams. "I am very happy with my overall performance," she said. "Coming into the Aussie titles it is a great confidence builder; in particular my second place in the surf race.'' Other outstanding performances came from Nick Sloman gold in the mens open surf race and Electra Outram, who competing in the u/19s, won three silver medals in the Iron Woman, Surf Race and Board. For Electra this has been a continuation of her good form at previous carnivals: she has shown that anything is possible at the forthcoming National Titles. Once again we had a truly outstanding performance from the boat section. "We had a great carnival," said boat sweep David Tomba. "We sent 10 crews to the titles and 8 of the ten made the finals with only 1 not making the podium." Perhaps the highlight for the boaties would have to be the performance of the two u/19 girls' crews. Once again these two crews, affectionately known as the Spangled Drongos and the Scrub Turkeys made the final in their division and again finished with silver (Scrub Turkeys) and bronze medals. (Spangled Drongos)
Spangled Drongos and Scrub Turkeys on medal dias.
U19 girls heading out in the State titles It was these two crews who last season in "the biggest surf we had ever seen," made the final of the Australian Surf Rowers League Championships and finished with the silver and bronze; all season they have featured in podium finishers. Not to be outdone the Reserve grade ladies, the Chums, won the silver in their final. This was despite drawing the very bad alley 6; another gutsy performance. Rowing
in the mens 160 Masters, the Toucans and the Macaws, also gained silver and bronze. In the 180 mens division, the Emus won silver and in the 220, Condors bronze. With these consistent results the performance and dedication of boat sweeps David Tomba and Mick Gardner must be acknowledged. In the words of the Surf Sports Director Peter French. "These crews are very settled and their performance has been outstanding."
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
"Our Sunshine Beach team despite being small had a great weekend said," Head Coach Josh Minogue. "We finished in the top 10 for the second straight year; there were a lot of close calls with many just missing out on the medals" Once again this club has shown great strength with outstanding performances from their u/17 teams. In the relay events the boys won silver on the ski and in the girls won a silver on the boards and in the surf teams the bronze. Outstanding efforts from amongst the girls came from Ruby Nolan and Charlie McKinley when both doubled up to compete in the board relay and surf teams .For Ruby Nolan it has also been a great season for this young lady has repeatedly been amongst the medals at many carnivals. Another encouraging factor has been the number of contestants from both clubs who have made the finals and just missed a medal; too many to name. In this factor Sunshine was indeed very unlucky. A great effort from both clubs ●
JACK MANGROVE
WARM WEATHER BRINGS REWARDS IN THE OFFSHORE SCENE This week's weather has been warmer than usual, which has seen the offshore scene come alive this week with anglers making do of short weather windows and reaping the rewards. North reef as well as Double Island has been providing anglers with scarlet sea perch as well coral trout and snapper. These fish have been taken on both bait and lures, with heavily weighted pilchards on paternoster rigs as well as live baits and slab baits claiming the better fish. In closer Chardons Reef and Sunshine Reef has been the pick for anglers chasing reef fish including lipper and squire with the big Spanish mackerel cruising around these areas as well. For anglers chasing these fish, slow trolling dead baits such as slimy mackerel, sauries and garfish the better option. Don't be shy to troll close to the boat as the sound of the outboard brings fish in for a closer look. Longtail and mac tuna have been in close around hells gates and in the bay area. To target these line burners, anglers need to 'match the hatch'. Using smaller 15-30 gram slugs have been the preferred weight to cast. Halls reef has seen some quality snapper as well as tusk fish and Maori cod. These have been caught on whole slimy mackerel on weighted Truturn gang hooks and pilchard/squid combos on pater-noster rigs. For anglers preferring noosatoday.com.au
Tom Coogan with a nice flathead. lures, 5-7 inch soft plastics have been working best. A slower approach has seen the most success with a single and double hop along the bottom. The Noosa River has also felt the effect of the warm week with mangrove jacks, trevally and whiting really turning it on for the estuary anglers. The snags near the dog beach as well as the upper reaches with live mullet and fillet have worked very well. After dark is the best time to target these elusive fish as they feed during fading light, so optimise your chances and hit the snags! Trevally fisherman have seen the river come alive with the warmer weather as GT are aggressively hunting bait fish around woods bay and the dog beach. These fish are best targeted with surface walkers
with a twitch, twitch pause action which trevally can't resist. Be sure to target these fish during low light periods as they are less hesitant to hit surface lures. Other species of trevally such as goldens and diamonds have also been boated by lucky anglers near the coast guard and woods bay area. These fish are bottom feeders and hit lures and bait presentations such as prawns and smaller whole bait fish fished close to the bottom. Don't forget to throw out a few crab pots as we approach the full moon. Be aware of the stronger currents and keep pots close to the mangroves. Along the beaches deep gutters formed by cyclone Oma have granted beach fisherman with some of the best gutters in months. Jewies and tailor are about with most fisherman collecting great feeds of elbow slapper whiting as well as dart, bream and flathead during the daytime. For whiting, the traditional beach worm on a running all sinker rig has been working well. The freshwater impoundments have been alive with fish. Saratoga, bass and yellow belly have all been actively feeding as a result of this week's warm weather. Saratoga will eat anything that fits in their mouth and a lure that creates a surface commotion will do really well including surface frogs and walkers. A slow roll with these lures
will draws bites when fished around logs and weed edges. If chasing bass, use your sounder to find a school and use blades and vibes. Perform slow lifts through the school and it won't take long until there is a fish on board. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
