Yet no other cases of listeriosis have been linked to the factory. Ian Cook says it has since complied with all 37 corrective orders of the department, including a forensic cleandown of the factory. The department is refusing to allow it to reopen, and is sending in forensic scientists to “build a case” against his business after the fact. He says the department’s actions are un-

A Dandenong South family company says it has been unjustly blamed and shut down by the state’s health authorities over the death of an elderly patient. Catering company iCook Foods, which had run for 35 years with an “unblemished” foodsafety record, claims there is no evidence that its food was unsafe. Meanwhile the business with 41 workers has been effectively destroyed, its devastated director Ian Cook says. Up to its closure in February, it was the state’s largest provider of Meals On Wheels meals as well as providing foods to aged care homes and private hospitals. It turned over more than $6 million a year. “How can you sum up destruction?” he says at his now-silent factory. The health probe was launched after an 86-year-old woman with heart disease died at a private hospital on 4 February. Seventeen days later, the factory was shut down by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Greater Dandenong Council. The department has stated the woman had been diagnosed with listeriosis - which is associated with food contamination. It was “strongly” linked via genomic sequencing to listeria bacterium detected in six products such as ham, silverside and sandwiches at iCook Foods. However tests also revealed that the sample levels were comfortably within safe food-standards. Australian food standards set the unsafe limit for listeria as more than 100 colony-forming units (CFUs) per gram. The levels found on the iCook products, including supplied ham and silverside, were less than 10 CFUs per gram. Samples taken from the kitchen’s surfaces and equipment failed to detect any listeria. A DHHS spokesperson said “the test result ... is only one of a number of samples which were taken and analysed”.

IN BRIEF

Three jailed over brutal home attacks By Cam Lucadou-Wells Three men have been jailed by the Victorian County Court over a series of terrifying armed break-ins at a family home in Keysborough. Anthony Claridge, 29, Damien Hobby, 27, and James Begg, 35, were in states of “ice-fuelled madness” as the male resident was thrice attacked in his home over a dispute in July and August 2017. During one of the break-ins, the victim’s three terrified children were present. They described being in fear of dying at the time at the hands of the “man with the gun”. On another, a sawn-off rifle was pointed at the victim and fired into a nearby wall. And on the last, he was repeatedly beaten with a pole, stomped, punched and kicked until he escaped to a neighbouring denture clinic. On two occasions, the offenders stole from the home after the victim fled. Judge Patricia Riddell, on sentencing on 20 March, described it as a “serious form” of “vigilante action”. About 7pm on 3 July, the male’s three children spotted an unknown male entering through the rear kitchen area while an armed Claridge and Hobby knocked and kicked at the front door. A front window was broken as the pair

yelled for the victim to come outside. The court accepted that the intruders aborted the attack when they discovered the 13-year-old, 12-year-old and 10-year-old children. Judge Riddell noted however that the attacks resumed weeks later despite the risk that the children might be home. About 3.30am on 21 July, Claridge and an unidentified third man kicked in the home’s rear door, while Begg waited outside. One of them pointed a sawn-off rifle at the male resident in the kitchen. A shot was fired into a nearby wall as the victim retreated. He fled and took refuge in a neighbour’s front yard. The victim’s wallet containing $2500, four mobile phones and a debit card were stolen. Begg and Claridge used the card to withdraw $1000 from a Beaconsfield ATM later that morning. On the afternoon of 2 August, Hobby and an unknown male broke in and “viciously” bashed the resident in front of three other adults. The victim’s mobile phone was stolen by the attackers, while Begg waited outside. On their arrest, police seized a 12-gauge shotgun and .22-calibre ammunition from

Claridge’s Holden sedan in Cranbourne. A home-made shotgun, cartridges and a phone were also seized from his home. From Begg’s Cranbourne home, police seized a .22-calibre sawn-off rifle, which matched the bullethole left in the victim’s wall. A home-made firearm, weapon cartridges, phones, ID cards and a foldable knife were seized from Hobby’s home. Claridge, Hobby and Begg pleaded guilty to a range of offences including aggravated burglaries, assault, causing injury, theft and obtaining property by deception. Judge Riddell said the offenders’ ice-effected states were an aggravating feature. Claridge and Hobby were also several weeks into their community corrections orders at the time of the break-ins. Since their arrest, all three had completed drug treatment programs while in remand custody. Their prospects for rehabilitation were positive, provided they remained drugfree. Claridge was jailed for up to 11 years, with an eight-year, two-month non-parole period. Hobby received an eight-and-a-half year jail term, with a minimum six years, 10 months. Begg was jailed for six-and-a-half years, with a four-year non-parole period.

Man locked up over road-rage A 44-year-old Noble Park man will face 27 charges over a series of violent road rage incidents in Springvale, Dandenong South and Endeavour Hills. The man, who allegedly drove a dark-grey Ford Falcon FG XR6 sedan with tint windows and a tow bar, is accused of assaulting three drivers and ramming two vehicles since December 2018. He was charged by Greater Dandenong CIU detectives on 17 March. His offences include assault, affray, criminal damage, reckless conduct endangering injury and driving in a manner dangerous. He has been remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court in April.

Robbed in Noble Street park A woman has been bashed and robbed of her phone at night in a reserve in Noble Park. The 22-year-old Noble Park woman was approached by a male as she sat in the park on the corner of Buckley and Noble streets about 10.40pm on Saturday 16 March. As she got up to leave, the male struck the back of her neck and she fell to the ground. He snatched her phone from her hand, fleeing by foot west along Noble Street. The robber was described as African appearance, aged between 20-30 years and wearing dark clothing. The victim was uninjured during the attack.

Camry burnt beyond recognition Police have been unable to identify the remains of an incinerated Toyota Camry in Newcomen Road Springvale. The vehicle, without number plates, was completely destroyed by fire behind a train maintenance yard about 6.30am on Saturday 16 March.

Grieving mosques united By Cam Lucadou-Wells Mosque communities in the South East have been comforted by an outpouring of sympathy since the 15 March Christchurch massacre. Imam Salih, of Emir Sultan Mosque in Dandenong, says hundreds of well-wishers' flowers and cards have been delivered. The mosque did not take part in a Mosque Open Day across Melbourne on 17 March, but many visitors - Muslims and non-Muslims showed up to offer condolences. "We live in a peaceful country," the imam said. "When it happens in our community, we come together more strongly." Some of the sympathy cards have been posted on the mosque's Facebook page. "We just want you to know you are loved. The whole community stands with you," one card said. "You are welcome in Dandenong because it is your home," another card stated. "Do not listen to the few loud and hateful people who tell you something different." Soon after the terrible killings in Christchurch mosques, police officers arrived at Emir Sultan as a precaution ahead of its popular Friday prayer event that day, the imam said. The mosque, which is protected by surveillance cameras and a tall perimeter fence, had not received any direct threats. Omar Farooq Mosque in Doveton called for a greater police presence, especially during Friday services. Local police officers visited the mosque soon after the killings. Record numbers including Casey councillors Damien Rosario and Wayne Smith visited on the 17 March open day. "We thank the community for their support and that we're all one," spokesperson Rokhan Akhbar said.

Imam Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad Ahmad, Casey Cr Wayne Smith, Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards and other visitors at Omar Farooq Mosque.

Well-wishers' flowers delivered to Emir Sultan Mosque in Dandenong. Shaken worshippers felt the shootings could have happened at any mosque, he said. "What if that man - an Aussie man - came to one of the mosques in Melbourne? He could have targeted any other mosque in Australia. "Everyone is so saddened and devastated, especially for the children, women, the elderly ... "Those people who have been killed have left their countries of origin to live in peace and harmony with others, and to feel safe. "It never would have crossed their mind that something of that terror would happen to them. "Mosques are a place of worship and people come there to be at peace." Mr Akhbar called on the Federal Government to strengthen anti-vilification laws against 'hate speech' targeting the Muslim community and other groups. "Why is it that white supremacist groups are not banned? And why are they not de-

clared terrorist groups? "They're a serious threat to the Islamic community. We have a right to be protected and to be safe as any citizen of this country." Senator Fraser Anning's statement that Muslim immigration was to blame for the massacres was "just devastating", Mr Akhbar said. "They were just like putting salt on the wounds. "It creates division in the community. His comments incite more terror and more evil acts." But ironically, in the wake of the horrors, the community was stronger and more united, Mr Akhbar said. A positive change is sweeping through some federal politicians and commentators. But it should have happened a long time ago, he said. "After the loss of so many innocent people, we come to our senses. "It has finally happened in these bad times. Why didn't we do it in the good times?"

At one with community By Cam Lucadou-Wells Two vigils at Dandenong's Harmony Square sent powerful messages of unity and grief in response to the recent horrific events at the Al Noor and Linwood Mosques in Christchurch. Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network organised a one-hour ceremony at Harmony Square on 21 March. It included a series of prayers and meditations delivered by faith leaders, a minute's silence and the assembly of flowers as a tribute. Members of the public were welcome to place flowers and write tributes during the event. "We don't need to always agree," IFN development officer Helen Heath said. "But we need to live together in peace and harmony." The New Zealand tragedy had given people "pause for thought", Ms Heath said. "It's so close to home - not just because it's in New Zealand but because it's an Australian who is involved. "We're prayerful that there will be some change in policy and attitude in welcoming not just the Muslim community but minority groups such as asylum seekers." A spontaneous vigil had been also staged on 16 March - one day after the terrible acts in Christchurch. The crowd gathered around a heart-shape of candles with the word NZ (for New Zealand) in the middle. Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams and cleric Syed Abdul Qasim Rizvi spoke before a quickly-organised crowd of about 200. Among the gatherers were representatives of mosques in Dandenong, Doveton, Hallam and Narre Warren, as well as members of Buddhist and Christian faiths and councillors Tim Dark and Jim Memeti.

A reflective audience at the Harmony Square service on 21 March. 191667 Ms Williams told Star News that the "abhorrent" events in Christchurch were an "act of terrorism" and "blind hatred". She commended local Muslim community and its leadership for opening their doors to the public. "It would not have been unreasonable for Muslims to retreat, and for mosques to close their doors to outsiders. But they didn't. "Instead, our Muslim leaders gathered our community together in vigil, and they opened mosque doors to the public. "To our Muslim brothers and sisters, this is the time to show those who seek to divide us

that we are immune to their prejudice, their hate and their fear; that our shared humanity rises above it." Marking Cultural Diversity Week, Cr Blades later spoke of Greater Dandenong's 157 nationalities as well as the vigil held after the "terrible incidents" in Christchurch. "We stand in solidarity with all of the different faiths and all of the different communities that we look after in the City of Greater Dandenong." Cr Blades has written letters of sympathy to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel.

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS A minute's silence will be held for Christchurch victims at Greater Dandenong's council meeting on 25 March. Vigil organiser and social worker Saied Rezawi said he'd aimed to quickly gather together the South East communities and faiths in "solidarity, peace and love". "Australia is a peaceful country. "We don't want this to happen here, in the name of religion. "I'd say we are just Australians - that's what I pride myself on."

Students fire up for safety By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police riot shields, batons, gas masks and helmets proved a perfect icebreaker for the launch of Fired Up! English at Chisholm Institute. Others among the 600 students from Chisholm's South East campuses sat behind the wheel of a Victoria Police car, blaring its sirens and flashing its lights. Or took the chance to use SES equipment to cut a metal ring, or to handball a footy. Fired Up! English is a revamped 12-lesson fire-safety course developed jointly by Chisholm and the CFA. The course provides "contextualised" learning of fire safety protocols as well as language skills for culturally diverse students in English as Additional Language classes and the Adult Migrant English Program. "It's giving people the real resources they need to be safe and part of the community," Chisholm's Ann Irving said. "In a recent class, two of the students showed interest in becoming career firefighters. "In the past, a number have joined their local brigades as volunteers." During the activity day in Dandenong on 19 March, a crowd of students dressed up in riot gear at the Australian Federal Police display stand. AFP officer 'Jerry' wearing a mask, helmet, Kevlar bulletproof vest, radio and armed with a Glock, baton and capsicum spray happily posed for photos with eager fans. He said the stall was about showcasing the police's "capabilities" and encouraging new arrivals to engage with police. "We're here to help. "We go to a lot of CALD (culturally and linguistically diverse) communities, visit a lot of mosques - especially after unfortunate events (such as Christchurch on 15 March)."

CFA's Nada El-Masri and Jude Kennedy. 191642

AFP Detective Sergeant Tony Stafford and Thi Biu. 191642 Detective Sergeant Tony Stafford said the aim of its stall was to show what the AFP does such as counter-terrorism, international drug investigations, peacekeeping, embassy security and cybercrime. "The importance of cybersafety is growing. "A lot of the diverse communities have little understanding of it. So we help them protect themselves in that space." Chisholm Institute chief executive Dr Rick Ede said the TAFE was focusing on "broader student engagement". "The fire safety program launched today is part of our work to ensure our culturally and linguistically diverse student body is well equipped with the wider set of life-skills they will need to thrive in our community," Dr Ede said. "These skills can then be shared by our students with their families, friends and others in their community."

Violent crime is dropping By Cam Lucadou-Wells Weapon offence rates dropped in Greater Dandenong in 2018, alongside a reduction in violent crime, according to the latest official statistics. Crimes against the person, generally, are at their lowest per capita since December 2012. They dropped 12 per cent in the 2018 calendar year. On the rise are burglaries (0.3 per cent), thefts (6 per cent) and benefit-by-deceptions (25 per cent). Property and deception offences generally increased by 6 per cent. Greater Dandenong police's Acting Superintendent Mark Langhorn noted the three shootings in Springvale, Dandenong and

Doveton in recent weeks were outside the reporting period. "We understand that there is community concern following these incidents," Act Supt Langhorn said. "We want to reassure people that all three matters are subject to significant active investigations that are absolutely a priority for Victoria Police." The drop in weapon offences (down 9 per cent) coincided with police running Operation Omni in and around railway or bus stations in Greater Dandenong last year, he said. The operation targeted anti-social behaviour and weapon offences on the public transport system. According to statistics, there were drops

in the offence rates of assaults (13 per cent), sexual offences (12 per cent), robbery (3 per cent), stalking and harassment (18 per cent) and dangerous and negligent acts endangering people (21 per cent). In raw numbers, there were 1643 recorded assault offences in Greater Dandenong - more than 30 a week. "Police in the Greater Dandenong area take these kinds of offences very seriously and we have been focused on providing a highly visible presence across the community in an effort to deter crimes such as robberies and assaults," Act Supt Langhorn said. There was a police focus on recidivist family violence offenders as well, he said. The rise of deception offences was partly

attributed to criminals being charged with multiple offences. "Once the matter is reported to police and an investigation commences, we often find there has been further offending where hundreds of offences may then by detected by police," Act Supt Langhorn said. Police were also focusing on high-volume crimes such as theft of vehicles and theft from vehicles, particularly with patrols in hot-spots such as railway station car parks, he said. Drug trafficking and dealing was down 16 per cent , but drug use and possession was up 3 per cent. Breaches of court orders were down 4 per cent. Homicides were down from 12 to 2 last year.

No harm to heritage tree, says council By Cam Lucadou-Wells

"There is no risk to the health of the tree as part of the current works. "Council will be installing organic mulch around the tree which is expected to improve the trees growing conditions." Mr Cinquegrana said a yellow painted mark between the tree and the velodrome was "part of the preliminary set of works". "(It) has no significance to the current works being undertaken." The removal of the track's asphalt and subbase would begin early in the week starting 25 March.

12407680-SN10-19

Greater Dandenong Council says a towering heritage-listed tree metres from Maurice Kirby Velodrome will not be damaged during the cycling track's demolition. With the track set for removal in days, the council has assured that the 250-year-old River Red Gum tree will be buffered from works by a 14-metre tree protection zone. The remnant tree stands about two metres from the track's south-west flank. It is listed as in good condition, 22 metres tall on an embankment that supports the cycling track. According to a National Trusts of Australia website, the tree is listed as regionally significant. It was in a "unique location or context and so provides a contribution to the landscape". Supporters of Save Noble Park Velodrome

have raised concerns that the demolition works will damage the tree's long-established root system. Despite a sustained protest campaign, the cycling track is being demolished as part of Greater Dandenong Council's masterplan to upgrade Parkfield Reserve. It will make way for a shared path and an extended cricket and soccer field, as well as a new multi-sport pavilion. The masterplan states that the gum tree needed to be protected. Greater Dandenong Council's acting engineering services director Craig Cinquegrana said there was expected to be "no impact" on the tree. "Given the mounded area around the tree will be retained and only the asphalt removed, it is expected there will be no impact on the tree itself.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 27 March 1919 The Price of Milk A large number of dairymen from various parts of the country attended a meeting of the Metropolitan Milk Suppliers Co-operative Co Ltd at the Temperance Hall Melbourne on Friday. The company, which recently raised the wholesale price of milk from ½ pence to 1/3 per gallon, was on Tuesday last adversely criticised at a meeting of retail dairymen. For some years the retail dairy men had been dealing direct with the individual farmers who had to accept whatever prices were offered. At times the farmers were told, at short notice, by the retailers to keep their milk at home for certain periods. The position was most unsatisfactory to the farmers, hence their desire to establish an organisation through which they could secure

Rose Elias 52, died on 16 March, leaving a legacy of a welcoming and caring nature and a smile that brightened everyone's day. About 50 members of Wellsprings held a tribute for Ms Elias on 19 March. During the event, they shared stories and memories, speaking passionately about the impact she had on their lives. Some spoke of how Ms Elias helped them out of isolation and to become happy and fulfilled women who were connected to the community. "The Tribute was both a time to mourn Rose's death and celebrate her life and legacy," Wellsprings chief executive Dalal Smiley said. "We certainly missed her so much especially at such a difficult time following the New Zealand tragedy, as she would have been the key person our participants would go to for

comfort, reassurance and succour". Arriving in Australia in 1998, Ms Elias often said her family were the first South Sudanese to settle in Dandenong. She started at Wellsprings on a placement as a community-development student, meeting the service's founder Sister Ann Halpin. Since 2005, Ms Elias had taken on various roles at Wellsprings including running the home visitation program, establishing the mentor program and providing one-to-one support. "What stood out about Rose was her innate ability to make people feel welcomed, valued and loved," Ms Smiley said. "She had an unshaken determination to remain positive despite the difficulties that she encountered along the way. "She was particularly gifted at lifting everyone's mood from grumpiness to joy." Ms Elias was also heavily involved with her

Sudanese community, especially with MaMa Land which helped settle South Sudanese families in Australia. The MaMa Land women also raised funds to help families in South Sudan.

In her words, the name MaMa Land represented "the love of all people and the connection to the land". "The members of Mama Land care for land, and the children who are left behind," Ms Elias said.

Fablice’s powerful tale By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Fablice Manirakiza has received a national arts award for his community-building workshops. 191277

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Mr Manirakiza founded the Municipal Association of Victoria's youth steering committee to help multicultural leaders with youth issues and to advocate to state politicians on behalf of migrants and refugees. His view on multicultural youth issues is

that both sides can do better. "The society of Australia don't give us enough awareness. "They are not giving enough time to know these young people to share their stories with them."

"There are other young people that are going through what happened to me. "For me to be able to share my story makes an impact on them. "I'm advocating for other young people trapped in those situations." 12404323-DJ46-18

Fablice Manirakiza is a big believer in the power of story. And the Keysborough youth arts officer has one of the most extraordinary and harrowing of stories. Mr Manirakiza was practically a refugee in his home country Burundi at two years of age. He was orphaned by the killing of both parents at eight and forced to be a child-soldier at 11. "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger," he says. And his childhood has made him stronger. He still remembers the great human values instilled in him by his Catholic parents as they tucked him into bed as a small child. "I learnt to love and accept the Lord, and also the power of education - the only reason we keep having conflict is a lack of education." Amazingly resilient, Mr Manirakiza has wanted to "change the world" ever since arriving in Australia in 2007. "I've been blessed to come to this country. "I see it as a country that has every opportunity. And we have young people who are blessed enough to see the big picture." This month, he was bestowed the Australia Council for the Arts' Kirk Robson Award for community arts and cultural development. It recognises his hip-hop and rap workshops that reach out to young people in marginalised communities. He estimates he's visited thousands of students about 300 schools in Australia, New Zealand and Timor Leste. Like many, the Christchurch event was a "bombshell" personally. But on the other hand, it was also part of "the world we live in". "The media hate people we don't even know exist, so every so often people will rise and target people who are innocent." The cure is to share stories with people so we can understand one another, he says.

His life for others By Casey Neill

Lee Tarlamis.

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate. His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June. The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said. “I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement. “It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people. “It’s a view that I formed very early on.” Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17. “The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

throughout those two years,” he said. “It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me. “That’s why I got involved in the local community.” Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre. “The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.” There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer. “That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said. “That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.” He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014. “That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said. Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings. The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up. The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old. He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands. Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business. “I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said. “I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that. “I really enjoyed the community stuff. “Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

A Casey councillor has been accused of “making a fool of himself” after a minute silence was held for victims of the Christchurch massacre. During a council meeting on Tuesday 19 March councillors and the public gallery stood for a minute’s silence following the horrific shooting in New Zealand last Friday. However, Cr Sam Aziz controversially then called for a minute’s silence to honour the lives of those lost in a recent Nigerian attack and a terrorist attack in the Philippines. “It’s imperative upon us to also acknowledge everyone who has perished,” Cr Aziz said. “I’m sure that all the members of the Muslim community present here in the gallery would unhesitatingly join me in honouring their memory in this way.” After a minute’s silence, Cr Aziz rose again in the council chamber requesting councillors to take a further minute silence “to actually honour the memory of those that we haven’t remembered and those that have got no one to remember them.” Maureen of Narre Warren North, who attended the meeting, said she and her husband were “appalled” by Cr Aziz’s behaviour. “He got up and made an absolute fool of himself and council as far as we were concerned,” she said. Maureen, who asked not to publish her surname, said they “had no problem” in paying tribute to the Christchurch victims. “Obviously it upset the other gentleman (Cr Aziz) and he had to put all these other things which took all the relevance of the first minute silence,” she said. “It was a waste of time; it was disrespectful in the end for everybody. “It just didn’t make sense. It reminded us of a Monty Python skit.

“I’ve spoken to Councillor Crestani and she said yes she was appalled and the Mayor was also upset and it would never happen again,” Maureen added. Adam Sadiqzai, a community leader and a proud Muslim, said he was disappointed by Cr Aziz’s comments. “It’s so disheartening that we have paid, elected representatives that are divisive and politically point scoring at a time that’s so inappropriate,” Mr Sadiqzai said. “Those kinds of comments undermine the gravity of what’s happened in New Zealand and normalising these horrible events. They’re essentially saying, ‘Well, it’s okay that happened, because all of this happened’. It just makes no sense to me. “No life is more valuable than another. Our leaders should be preaching compassion, love and acceptance rather than hate and division.” After all three minute silences, Cr Aziz told the chamber: “We will take a minute silence every time we need to grieve collectively with humanity and share the sorrow of those that are simply innocent victims of rampant crime.” Cr Wayne Smith said the further minute silences by Cr Aziz seemed a “bit of an attempt” to diminish the Christchurch tribute. “You’d have to ask Sam (Aziz) about his motives,” he said. “I was hoping it would be handled differently.” Cr Rosalie Crestani said the multiple minute silences were “unusual” but “drove multiple points home.” “I wondered, do we observe a minute’s silence for every attack or mass loss of life that occurs overseas? Perhaps we should,” she said. “What should have been highlighted was the multiple terrorist attacks observed during the three silences and that was the victims were almost always Christians and are statistically the most persecuted group in the world."

City fire aid The City of Greater Dandenong has contributed $10,000 to the Casey Cardinia Foundation’s Bushfire Relief Fund, raising money for those impacted by the recent Bunyip State Park fires. The donation was instigated by Cr Tim Dark and unanimously approved by his council colleagues. Cr Dark said the impact of the fires - claiming 29 homes and another 67 outbuildings - was felt throughout the entire South East region. “We were more than happy to help,” he said. Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades said it was a great idea from Cr Dark.

“We are a generous council, the most multicultural in Australia,” she said. Casey Cardinia Foundation chairman Paul Thomas thanked the City of Greater Dandenong for the generous gesture, which takes the relief fund beyond the $40,000 mark. Mr Thomas said the Foundation was a charitable conduit of giving and providing for the community and was more than happy to set up the relief fund at the request of the Shire of Cardinia. “It’s great to see that there has been a regional response to the fires and we thank Greater Dandenong for the contribution,” he said.

Pup in need of a leg up By Brendan Rees Six-month old rescue pup Charm has not had the best start in her short life. She was saved from an abusive owner and arrived at a shelter underweight and with a missing front leg. Debra Jeff of Lyndhurst has been fostering Charm, believed to be a Catahoula/Whippet since January. She says she's "doing OK" but the "long-term outcome is not good." "She's already showing signs of curvature in the spine." The operation is expected to cost $2,000 with the new prosthetic limb to cost about $3,000. Debra explained Charm's missing leg was putting a "massive strain on her spine." She now suffers from stiffness, limping, restricted movement and rotation, sensitivity to touch, and back pain to name a few as a result. "Charm will need to have a partial amputation of what is remaining on the limb because at the moment the stump is too sensitive to be able to have a prosthetic fitted comfortably," Debra said. When Charm arrived four months ago at Starting Over Dog Rescue, a registered not for profit charity run by volunteers, "she literally inhaled food" in the first couple of weeks in care. "Because I don't work I put my hand up and said 'yep, we'll take her.'" Charm has been seeing a physio twice a week doing exercises and swimming, and water treadmill to build her muscles and gain core strength. "For a dog that has been through so much she is so loving and has such a sweet nature despite what life has thrown at her so far," Debra says. A GoFundMe page has been set up for people willing to donate funds. Details visit: https://www.facebook.com/StartingOverDogRescue/ or via bank: Commonwealth Bank to Starting Over dog Rescue BSB 063 184 ACC 10373408 (please mark any donation as Charm's Leg). "Any extra funds raised would greatly be appreciated to give this gorgeous girl the best new start we can," Debra said. https://youtu.be/pre6IcOaPik https://youtu.be/suHuJPHChH8

Aiming high for April

Tailored for love Leon and Anna D'Aversa travelled right across the world before they first laid eyes on each other. The Noble Park North couple, both born in Italy, met in a tailor shop in the country town Mildura in Victoria in 1957. Anna was working in the Italian tailor shop, which was owned by Leon's friend. Two years later they married. And 60 years on, they celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with 22 family and friends at Freccia Azzurra in Springvale

on 17 March. The couple are parents to Mark, Manuela and Justin, and grandparents to Tara, Riley, Jess, Bianca, Andre, Isabella and Zach. "It was a wonderful afternoon with lots of laughter, eating, drinking, dancing and love," daughter-in-law Michelle Honey said. "We wish them many more years of love and happiness together." Mildura was a place of settlement common to many Italian migrants post World War II. Anna was working multiple jobs, including

the Italian tailor and rebuilding starter motors at a car-repair garage. Leon picked grapes and vegetables while also working as a carpenter. He was also a keen boxer who rode his motorbike around town. After marrying they moved to Collingwood with Anna's mother and sister. On the cusp of their third child, they moved to Clayton in 1965. They moved to their present address in Noble Park North on New Years Eve 1979.

Emerson School students hit the basketball court as they gear up for Premier's Active April. The State Government initiative aims to get Victorians up and exercising for 30 minutes a day during April. During the month, residents have access to offers such as 10 free passes to Dandenong Oasis, Noble Park Aquatic Centre and Springers Leisure Centre. Registration is free. Participants can access videos of 30 different 10-minute workouts on mobile apps and websites. Their progress can be logged online as they collect rewards in a virtual trophy cabinet. Waste disposal is available at all sites and the usual laundry, camp kitchen and barbecue facilities are on hand. As more and more travellers are enjoying extended trips with their 'best friends', Tambo River is pleased to welcome pets to the park. Some restrictions do apply regarding pets at Christmas and Easter. The park also offers comfortable and affordable cabins in a variety of sizes. The cabins

are popular with families and groups. Tambo River welcomes a number of fishing groups during the winter months, and groups of friends and families holidaying together. The village of Swan Reach has a wellstocked general store with post office and newsagency, a hotel providing meals and cold beer, and a service station for fuel, mechanical repairs and fishing gear. Bait, boat repairs and take away food are all available in the neighbourhood. The weather in autumn is usually very mild. Tambo River staff members would love to wel-

Visitors can enjoy scenic drives, visiting the local wineries or fresh fruit farms, cycling the rail trail or taking a bike ride to Metung for coffee. STAR JOURNAL 25

SPORT

Peter set for second run Launching Pad riches. The one lesson he learned above all others is preparation. "You pick up a lot of things. I know now to plan well before we go to a track. We're trying to prepare the dogs right, and that's the best thing I've picked up. "We came four weeks out from this series to trial and we were here last week with the dogs where they stayed at Anthony's place. We try and let the dogs relax in their own comfort, and we also change our feeding a little bit while we're travelling. "You see the trainers like David Geall, Seona Thompson, Anthony Azzapardis travelling all of the time and winning races constantly. We're just trying to take a leaf out of their book and see if we can be as good." Of course, identifying the right dog for the series is also important. One such greyhound the Lagogiane is hoping will shape up as a Launching Pad contender is Double Back who made his metropolitan racing debut in Thursday night's final race. "The dogs that'll show you the first two sections, really, they win the group races. "The dogs that come from behind, well, it's brilliant to watch barnstorming finishes, but generally 85% of races are won from the first two sections so the dogs show me earlier on in their career that they can run the first two sections and have the maturity, we look for that. "Double Back I saw early on. He was running the sections that Beast was running but didn't have the finishing prowess that he had, but he's getting stronger and better." There is $432,000 in prize money up for grabs over the three weeks of the Launching Pad. It is open to greyhounds with 1-6 wins and no more than 30 starts, and connections need to pay a $2000 entry fee to book one of the 64 places available. The winner of the fourth race on Thursday night earned a berth in the series as part of the win.

By Mick Floyd Less than 12 months after Beast Unleashed took home the Launching Pad, trainer Peter Lagogiane is back for another crack at the sport's only sweepstakes event. The brilliant Beast Unleashed entered the final the $2.70 favourite on the back of stellar heat and semi-final wins and raced to a memorable all of the way victory in the final, defeating the likes of Dyna Patty, Tornado Tears and She's Gifted to claim the $150,000 winner's cheque. Trained at the time by Peter's wife Jodie, it was the the biggest victory of their training career and there was a huge Easter crowd trackside to enjoy it. "It was a bit of a blur, the night was just amazing," he said. "We had some friends here, and obviously Dawn (Garrett) the owner, and my wife, my family and some real good friends flew down to Melbourne to support us. And what a night! "The atmosphere was electric and the children had a ball. I've been around the world now and seen a bit of greyhound racing, but this is, it's world class here at Sandown." Beast Unleashed arrived in Victoria with a big reputation and entered the series with four wins from five career starts. To win Launching Pad the way he did was not only a thrill, but a relief. "So many emotions go through your body. We talked the dog up a bit, we knew he had the pace, we knew he had the ability, and he just proved it to Sydney and Melbourne that the dog could do it." Three-week series can be demanding for both trainer and greyhound, particularly for a greyhound so early in its career. Rays season kicking off By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays are back in action and looking to defend their 2018 premiership. After winning last year's TAC Cup title, the Rays boast a talented, yet extremely young, list as the newly-named NAB League kicked off over the weekend. The Rays took on the Greater Western Victorian Rebels on Saturday afternoon in Ballarat to begin their 2019 campaign. Of the 2018 premiership-winning team - a squad that finally broke through and delivered the Rays their inaugural TAC Cup premiership after five grand final losses - only three players remain in 2019. They are Hayden Young, Ned Cahill and 19-year-old Mitch Riordan - all three will play vital roles across the ground this season. As well as a new-look playing group, the Rays also have a new coach and talent manager, with Nick Cox and Darren Flanigan taking on those roles, respectively. Hayden Young enters season 2019 as the one to watch for Dandenong fans and is a very real chance to be selected at the top end of the 2019 AFL Draft. He earned a living off half back last season, launching attacks from the back half with great purpose and confidence, using his divine foot skills at every opportunity. Look for him to take on more of a role in the midfield in 2019. With Dandenong's pre-

miership-winning midfield brigade now gone, Young will be given the opportunity to get involved in the engine room and prove he can have an impact from that position. Cahill, who starred towards the end of last season and was a key figure in the premiership run, is another AFL Draft prospect, possessing silky skills a goal-sense that would challenge anyone in the NAB League. He is quick, crafty and loves to do the dirty work - look for him to be a leader up forward this season. After such a great season last year and a crop of dominant top-agers, the Rays youngsters struggled to push into the team and gain experience. Because of this, the majority of the squad has very little experience at the level and while that's exciting in terms of development, there will likely be some tough days for Dandenong this season, especially early in the season. But if there's one thing we know about the Dandenong program, their ability to fasttrack development and the culture within their four walls is second to none, so they'll certainly get their fair share of wins along the way. For those looking to see the Rays in action, unfortunately Dandenong doesn't play at Shepley Oval in Dandenong until round 5 (April 27). In that game, the Rays take on the team they defeated in the 2018 grand final, the Oakleigh Chargers.

Spoljaric wins sixth Wookey to dominate the award The legendary Steve Spoljaric claimed an astonishing sixth Alan Wookey Medal as the champion Turf 1 player of the season in the Dandenong District Cricket Association at the vote count last Wednesday night. The former Parkfield and Cranbourne champion and now Springvale South star enjoyed yet another mammoth season for the Bloods, with the 41-year-old continuing his truly extraordinary cricket career in 2018/19. 'Spolly' - bowling less this season, mainly due to the fact that the Bloods have been so well served by their spinners - was in vintage touch with the bat in a brilliant Turf 1 campaign, cracking 728 runs during the home and away season, including three centuries and five half-centuries, as well as contributing seven wickets. The association legend - who has now won six Wookey medals since 2010/11, to go along with a Ryder Medal in 2007/08 while playing for Hawthorn-Monash in the Premier competition - narrowly pipped Hallam Kalora Park star Jordan Hammond by just a single vote late in the count, while St Mary's all-rounder Ruwantha Kellepotha finished third despite the

Leading with just two rounds to go, Hammond - who also got the chance to play in the Victorian SuperSlam with Casey-South Melbourne - enjoyed a stellar season for the Hawks, notching up almost 500 runs to go with 36 wickets. After each Turf 1 round, the two umpires place a 3,2,1 vote for who they deem to have been the best players on the field, with the maximum a player can receive in a round being six votes.

The DDCA also announced its official Turf 1 Team of the Year on the night.
