School celebrates diversity By Brendan Rees Fountain Gate Secondary College in Narre Warren has united in a sea of colour for this year's Cultural Diversity Week festivities. Staff and students gathered on Friday 22 March proudly wearing orange ribbons which signified respect for all cultures throughout the week. Students took part in cultural workshops including Indonesian and German 'selfie' stations, heena hand painting, traditional cultural games, and Angklung music. They also enjoyed soccer and rugby games, and the school's canteen featured different foods from around the world.

Trips ‘not a junket’ Ratepayers will be billed a whopping $70,000 to send councillors and council staff on business trips to China and the US this year. During a meeting held on 19 March, Casey Council endorsed a trip to New York for three councillors and two council staff to attend a Digital Workforce Summit in May - at a cost of $40,000. Council also plans to spend $30,000 to send one councillor, one council officer and one consultant to attend a China delegation to focus on culture and education in June. The same group will again head to China in November.

Inspiration starts here

Council's annual report for 2017-18 revealed ratepayers forked out $123,358 for councillor car and travel expenses. Cr Sam Aziz who will travel to China and New York racked up $19,936 on travel costs alone last financial year. Casey director of city planning and infrastructure Peter Fitchett said China presented a real opportunity for Casey. "Delegations such as these give us the best chance of forming relationships and identifying opportunities to create trade, economic development and arts and cultural benefits for our region," he said. Cr Rosalie Crestani expressed her concerns

about Casey's relationship with China. "China's retraction of waste recycling services effecting Casey and all councils and their residents, is only an early sign of a souring relationship; it's my gut feeling that something smells rotten in the state of China," she said. "That said, I love the Chinese people. We have many Chinese migrants and they are a lovely people with big hearts. They are welcome in Casey." Cr Aziz said council's previous two trips to China "were by no means junkets." "I stand behind the money we are investing," he said. "I'm taking time out of my stud-

ies, out of my family, out of my work for the sake of our city and its future." Cr Timothy Jackson, who will travel to New York, said: "It just so happens from a pre-planned trip I will actually already be in the United States when this conference is going on." Cr Rex Flannery said he "stood his ground" on not wasting money on overseas trips: "I want to see value for money and at the moment I'm not seeing that." Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association president Arvo Talvik said the trips were "typical" of Casey Council, adding "the expenses are not justifiable."

IN BRIEF

It’s un-Australian By Brendan Rees When Tracy Sweerts two children went to school wearing football gear to celebrate Harmony Day they least expected to be each handed a detention. She says her son, who wore attire from his local football club and daughter, who wore a North Melbourne Kangaroos AFL hoodie were punished for not "portraying Australian culture" when they celebrated Australian diversity at Cranbourne East Secondary College on Thursday 21 March. "We don't own an Akubra hat, we are not of Aboriginal decent, and both felt that their football attire represented what they held close to them within their culture," Ms Sweerts said. "Culture can be perceived in many different aspects; however the main message is harmony. Respect for one another. Sport is a part of culture right across the world." The school's principal, Mandee Strick-

land apologised, saying the detentions had been revoked. "We realise the communication to students and staff was unclear, for which we apologise," she said. "While students were initially given a detention, this was overturned when it became clear that they were not at fault." She said the school arranged a number of activities to celebrate Harmony Day, and encouraged students to wear cultural dress, or an item of orange clothing. "Our school has a proud history of cultural diversity and we strongly encourage students to celebrate their identity," Ms Strickland added. Ms Sweerts says she was "bitterly disappointed" with the school's initial decision to punish her children, adding she had not received a personal apology. "I was really quite shocked actually. I really didn't expect that," she said. "They love their footy and they see the events throughout the

year of celebration, acceptance and respect." "The AFL is setting a positive foundation of acceptance and support of all in our country," she said."Is that not what we are aiming for with our younger generation with Harmony Day - acceptance, support, respect and rule out racism?" She says her children, who she has chosen not to identify; text messaged her on the day expressing their "sheer shock" after receiving a detention. "When the kids got home they said there were a few of the teachers that had footy jumpers on as well which really made it quite contradicting." A Department of Education supported students' expression of what they believe Australian culture meant to them. "All students should feel proud of their heritage and background, and the department encourages schools to celebrate diversity and belonging - in all its forms - during Cultural Diversity Week," a spokesperson said.

Together for day of respect Students at Hampton Park Primary School have dedicated a ‘cultural Infusion’ performance to the people of Christchurch as a mark of respect during the school’s Harmony Day celebrations. Star News photographer Stewart Chambers captured the stunning performance of Preps Licy, Sam and Christina on the day. “Harmony Week is an opportunity for all students and families to share aspects of their culture and traditions,” principal Liz Davey said. 191497

Crestani speaks out on minute’s silence By Brendan Rees Casey Councillor Rosalie Crestani has hit back at accusations she was “appalled” by the multiple minutes of silence held during the council meeting for Christchurch massacre victims. It comes after Cr Sam Aziz created a stir last week when he was accused by several people of trivialising a minute’s silence during a council meeting on Tuesday 19 March following the New Zealand shooting. Cr Sam Aziz called for a minute’s silence to honour the lives of those lost in recent overseas terrorist attacks as well a further minute of silence “to actually honour the memory of those that we haven’t remembered and those that have got no one to remember them.” However, Cr Crestani rejected claims she was “appalled” by Cr Aziz’s behaviour, saying “the multiple minute silences were unusual but drove multiple points home.”

“I wondered, do we observe a minute’s silence for every attack or mass loss of life that occurs overseas? Perhaps we should,” she said. “So that we can remember just how blessed we are as a nation to have such a rare occurrence but also to show compassion for our fellow humanity.” Cr Crestani also added she was upset when Sheikh Daud Dlongolo of Hallam Mosque was invited to conduct a prayer at the council meeting following the Christchurch massacre saying she “simply did not” agree with it. “We were there with compassion for fellow humanity who were killed in the mosques in New Zealand; however I prayed to my God and held my Bible up at one point, and asked Jesus to comfort the families of the victims of the attack in New Zealand, for justice and peace to prevail.” Cr Aziz posted on his Facebook page saying: “I stand by what I did, and I hope I won’t have to do it again. As I have said before: All lives matter.”

“Apparently it’s madness to honour all who have died in violence, not just those who died in the New Zealand tragedy,” he posted. Cr Rex Flannery said the minute silences took away the emphasis of what happened in New Zealand. “I had no idea it was going to happen ... you would have to ask Councillor Aziz and (Mayor) Amanda Stapledon why they did it because it’s beyond me,” he said. Adam Sadiqzai, a community leader and a proud Muslim said Cr Aziz deserved to be “called out” as he made a “mockery of everyone” who sat in the public gallery of the council meeting. “My stand has got nothing to do with religion, absolutely nothing. For me a life is a life, and no life is more valuable than another,” he said. Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon declined to comment on the matter, and Cr Aziz did not respond to a request for comment by deadline.

New centre for health opens By Brendan Rees

Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney with nursing students Tamana Mohammadi and Andrew Alfaro who demonstrate the use of new equipment in a simulated hospital ward. 191899 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS "We're expecting to have the full range of medical conditions that we can simulate in this environment. It's pretty much close as you can get as the real world scenario," he said. Madeline Heaton, coordinator of health work placements at Chisholm said 300 students had already enrolled in courses. "We're hoping in the next 12 months our placements will really reap the benefits of this simulation," she said. St John of God Hospital Berwick chief executive Lisa Norman said the new facility was important in delivering hands-on learning and practical skills needed for work placements. "When they come on placement to us we know they've actually seen what a ward is like and their skills are being assessed in the right way," she said. Nursing teacher June Lazaro said the stateof-art facilities were amazing in creating scenarios "as real life as possible."

Burglaries have fallen significantly in Casey over the past year, latest crime statistics have revealed. The number of recorded offences in Casey fell by 4.9 per cent while burglaries accounted for a 12.4 per cent drop - down 44 per cent since 2016. Among the biggest reductions were drug use and possession (17.2 per cent), weapons and explosive offences (7.3 per cent), property damage (8.8 per cent), sexual offences (20.9 per cent), stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour (4.5 per cent), thefts (1.8 per cent), and homicide and related offences (32.2 per cent). Casey Local Area Commander Inspector Donald Brown said it was encouraging to see a decrease in the number of burglaries. "Our police have been working extremely hard every day and night to interrupt the crime cycle. We will continue to do all we can to prevent and detect crime in order to ensure the Casey community is safe and feels safe," he said. However, Insp Brown said theft of motor vehicles were up by 18.1 per cent while theft from motor vehicles increased by 17.9 per cent. "We know these types of crimes have been a concern recently and police will continue to proactively target known hotspots in an effort to detect and deter offending," he said. Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards said the decrease in crime was a result of a wellresourced police force proactively policing crime in the community.

"Our police are doing a lot of work to tackle crime issues in our community - and while the headline figures in this release are promising, we will not lose sight of the challenge that the entire community faces to drive down high harm crimes and family violence," she said. Ms Richards said the State Government was committed to boosting police capacity in the area, constructing a new police station in Clyde and rebuilding the Narre Warren Police Station. Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said the statistics showed the lowest victimisation rate across Victoria since 2004. "We know, I know, every Victoria police officer knows this is not just figures. These are people; these are victims of crime who have suffered real life experiences, sometimes very traumatic," he said. "The increase in police resources is having an impact on the number of offences and we would expect that trend to continue as we deploy the remainder of that 3,135 police of the coming years." Gembrook MP Brad Battin said with the overall state-wide rate increasing 1.7 per cent in the year ending 31 December 2018, "worrying trends" were appearing locally with jumps in aggravated robberies and assaults. "The Liberal Party committed to a new station in Clyde, and the Government must deliver this now," Mr Battin said. According to Gordon Rich-Phillips MP, Liberal Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region crime in Casey has risen by 19.3 per cent since December 2014 and called on Premier Daniel Andrews to deliver more frontline police.

A new $10 million health training facility has opened its doors to students and jobseekers at Chisholm Institute's Berwick campus. Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney joined Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donellan and Member for Narre Warren South Gary Maas at the Kangan Drive site to open the new centre of excellence, which forms part of the Berwick Health and Education Precinct. The facility features nurse training and simulation laboratories, learning areas and staff accommodation to help meet growing demand for skilled health workers in the south east. The precinct will support free TAFE by delivering courses in nursing, mental health and allied health, as well as a training partnership with the Casey Hospital and St John of God Hospital, Specialist Centre. Chisholm chief executive Dr Rick Ede said the aim was to create a learning facility that was "closely as possible resembled an active hospital environment." "The teaching is very active and very hands on. We've got these amazing robotic mannequins that act as a patient," he said, Ms Tierney said the facility would allow local nurses to "access training closer to home, helping to meet increasing demand for skilled health workers in the area." Student Marty Lasker of Pakenham who is studying a Certificate IV in Youth Work said the free TAFE course had given him the opportunity to turn his life around after a lifetime of drug addiction. "If I can redirect their lives at an early stage before they get to the stage that I actually got to then it would change the whole aspect of their lives," he said. Max Grynenko, who is studying a Bachelor of Nursing at La Trobe University in conjunction with Chisholm, said he was excited to use the simulation facility.

OPINION Front page treatment I’m sure you will be publishing, front page, Cr Aziz’s response to what happened at that council meeting. It all seems pretty one-sided according to the people interviewed. I contacted Cr Aziz with my view of the proceedings at the meeting according to your article by three people and you just don’t seem to get it. He may have gone about it in a way that didn’t please everyone but even an ordinary citizen like myself could see that Sam was embracing all of humanity and that although it was a terrible act that occurred at Christchurch, some elements of our society only come out of the woodwork kicking and screaming when it affects them. If a terrible incident happens to other members of society, very little is said or done. Cr Aziz was trying to emphasise that we should grieve equally for all members of society; which seems pretty straightforward; and not concentrate on one particular group. Let's see you do a story relating a different view. John N. Carpenter, via email

I want to congratulate Berwick Star News for their front page article and editorial published on Thursday 21st March. The headline “One mad minute” covers a story about events in the City of Casey Council chamber on Tuesday 19 March and it is important that it was brought to the public’s attention. I was present at the meeting during which the council and public gallery were asked four times to rise for a minute’s silence. Firstly, and appropriately led by the mayor we rose to remember those affected by the horrific events in the Christchurch mosques the previous week. However, after this solemn moment, we were then called three times by Councillor Sam Aziz to stand for a minute’s silence. He referred obliquely to events in Nigeria and the Philippines suggesting these were of sufficient impact on our community that they should be acknowledged in this manner and at this time. I know what point he was endeavouring to make. The exercise orchestrated by him diminished the solemnity and sincerity of the attention to Christchurch. In my estimation his actions turned the proceedings into a circus. Name and address supplied

Minute by minute A certain councillor had the gallery stand in silence for one minute, for the gunman’s victims in New Zealand which seemed reasonable. Then it was another minute for what looks like an oil tanker blowing up in Nigeria? Another minute for a cathedral bombed in the Phillipines? A fourth separate minute for all the people council never stood in silence for before? There was an announcement council has budgeted and the surplus is $7.4 million. After which there was not the least suggestion of keeping the rates steady. More the attitude of “What projects might this go on“.

Inflatable man on Rebound Court in Narre Warren. 191170 I would suggest to add insult, the same very talkative councillor as before, insulted people who are against nuclear energy and called these folks “hysterical“. This is I would suggest, quite divisive talk. No “harmony“ involved. I would like this city to be “smart“ sure, but sustainable: there are always the issues of tailings outside any uranium mine, and the disposal of the nuclear waste. I don’t know what is the point of saying with such certainty, nuclear energy is “the future“, and I would hope we’d at least try out in a genuine way, some other sustainable options. However spending was then the theme of the evening, and only Cr Rex Flannery was totally against funding more overseas trips for councillors, pursuing “smartness’, and our sister city, and suggested we do need to be well organised for business proposals that are already at our door. Well good on you Cr Flannery. Karen Young, via email

Be smarter I would think with all this emphasis on “Smart Livable City of Casey“ - would a Smart Livable City refuse in future to accept all the garbage that comes currently here in trucks to Hallam Road. Most of this rubbish is not ours, it is collections from several other municipalities round Melbourne. Surely we can opt out of this at some point, having accepted it for so long already. No wonder people in Hampton Park feel like the place is “a tip“; it certainly contains a very large and sometime rather pongy waste station. It would be good to learn from the past and not repeat the same policies and actions. That is one definition of “smart“. Karen Young, via email

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On 25 March a story was shared on the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page about seven teenagers from Cranbourne and surrounding areas that were arrested following an assault of a 23-year-old woman on a Pakenham train. Here is how our readers reacted online: Jodi Johnson: Yep 5am while we are working our butts off to provide for our families by travelling into the city for work. We have the added stress of being afraid now because of these low lifes! Where are their parents? They need to be charged too! Elaine Dickson: No bail just straight to jail. They have lost their right to freedom. About time our laws became tougher. All they'll get is a slap on the wrist. Debbie Launder Campagna: I need to ask, where were the parents? Five am and 15-year-old's. Not good. Mark Guinane: Again they've been bailed! These thugs will continue this behaviour because they know there is virtually zero consequences if they're caught! Nicholas Bennett: What 16-year-old's etc are out at five am? Donna Cooke: Well they may have been charged but I bet they're out on summons to appear in court and then when they go to court they'll be released on a suspended sentence. Jack Savage: This is getting ridiculous. Katrina De La Cruz: There shouldn't be a children's court. If you're stupid enough to do something like this, go straight to the big guns I say. Deb Watson: Bring back the conductors on public transport, and give them the power to stop and arrest.

SES crews from Narre Warren were called to the scene about 7.20pm where the Toyota Camry sedan was wedged in the roller door of the garage on Ardbalir Terrace. "To my knowledge the driver was able to exit the vehicle. The vehicle didn't have to be cut open or anything like that," spokesman for Narre Warren SES Damian Burns said. "It's just that the car cause such damage that the removal of the car was going to be tricky and didn't know how it was going to affect the stability of the house," he said. To his understanding, the cause of the incident was "operator error." "It wasn't due to drugs or alcohol or anything. "The whole of the roller door was damaged and also the lintel (beam) to the garage which helps hold up the roof," he added. Mr Burns said SES crews were on scene for an hour clearing rubble and putting up tarps until the owner's insurance company inspected the damage at a later date. "The car remained place. The car was helping to support those structures that if they had of been displaced they might of caused further structural damage," he said.

Six-month old rescue pup Charm has not had the best start in her short life. She was saved from an abusive owner and arrived at a shelter underweight and with a missing front leg. Debra Jeff of Lyndhurst has been fostering Charm, believed to be a Catahoula/Whippet since January. She says she's "doing OK" but the "long-term outcome is not good." "She's already showing signs of curvature in the spine." The operation is expected to cost $2,000 with the new prosthetic limb to cost about $3,000. "Charm was with a mentally disturbed person that had been banned from having animals, we don't really know what the conditions were like for her, we can only imagine," Debra says. "We are not sure how it happened but we know that she was not born like this." Debra explained Charm's missing leg was putting a "massive strain on her spine." She now suffers from stiffness, limping, restricted movement and rotation, sensitivity to touch, and back pain to name a few as a result.

"Charm will need to have a partial amputation of what is remaining on the limb because at the moment the stump is too sensitive to be able to have a prosthetic fitted comfortably," Debra said. When Charm arrived four months ago at Starting Over Dog Rescue, a registered not for profit charity run by volunteers, "she literally inhaled food" in the first couple of weeks in care. "Because I don't work I put my hand up and said 'yep, we'll take her.'" Charm has been seeing a physio twice a week doing exercises and swimming, and water treadmill to build her muscles and gain core strength. "For a dog that has been through so much she is so loving and has such a sweet nature despite what life has thrown at her so far," Debra says. A GoFundMe page has been set up for people willing to donate funds. Details visit: https:// www.facebook.com/StartingOverDogRescue/ or via bank: Commonwealth Bank to Starting Over dog Rescue BSB 063 184 ACC 10373408 (please mark any donation as Charm's Leg). "Any extra funds raised would greatly be appreciated to give this gorgeous girl the best new start we can," Debra said.

Berwick’s belter The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

- two premierships in two years. Not only is the former Noble Park champion blessed with an incredible squad, but he's a forward thinker, a modern day coach with an incredible tactical nous. The foundations are set, and as the club embarks on a new era in AFL Outer East, it seems the Wickers show no signs of slowing down. Turn to sport for more about a golden day for the Wickers in the final ever grand final of the South East Football Netball League.

By Nick Creely Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

A masquerade ball is being held in Murrumbeena to raise money for cancer research and the community is invited. Money raised will help expand the number of patients participating in the Monash Health Clinical Cancer Trials. Berwick resident and cancer victim Effie Atkins turned her life around when she volunteered for an experimental trial at Monash Hospital - a new form of cancer treatment that mobilises a person's immune system to fight the disease. "Becoming a guinea pig in a trial of new and untested cancer drugs saved my life," Effie says. "I have learnt there are many cancer patients like me, living here in Melbourne's South East, who cannot presently have the chance to

access the miracle I have enjoyed. "The Monash Clinical Cancer Trials Centre is under-utilised, mainly for lack of a small number of trainee doctors ("Oncology Research Fellows") who are needed to process and manage eligible patients entering drug trials," she added. "The Dr Hope Campaign is funding one such position and is pressing the authorities to extend such services to Casey Hospital." The masquerade ball will be held at Merrimu Receptions, 1300 Dandenong Road, Murrumbeena on Friday 5 April at 6.30pm. Tickets $150 per person. A three course meal with beer, wine and soft drinks included with live music and entertainment. Tickets available via Trybooking at https:// www.trybooking.com/465848

A man who stabbed his wife to death in a "frenzied" attack in their Hallam share-house bedroom has been jailed for at least 20 years. In a "bitter" argument during Australia Day drinks, Douglas Eustace, 44, murdered Mary Freeman with a large kitchen knife shortly after midnight on 27 January 2018. It was labelled the "ultimate act of family violence" and the "extreme end of abominable acts" by Supreme Court of Victoria's Justice Lesley Taylor during sentencing on 26 March. The couple had wed in October 2017, three months after meeting at a party. Before her killing, Ms Freeman retired to the bedroom after a bitter abusive argument with her husband, the court had heard. Eustace grabbed a large knife from the kitchen, secreted it in the back of his trousers and went to the bedroom. During a loud argument, a neighbour heard both parties yelling threats to kill each other. Eustace later told police that Ms Freeman was flipping a paring knife in her hands. He inflicted 12 sharp force wounds up to 10 centimetres deep into Ms Freeman's body, arm and leg. During the attack, she crouched, cried, screamed and tried to cover herself, the court heard. He was dragged out of the room in a headlock by a housemate but broke free. He stabbed her twice again before being restrained by two male housemates. "Let me go, I want to kill this bitch," he said. He then surrendered himself to Dandenong police station, telling police he did not know why he stabbed Ms Freeman other than being "angry and drunk". He didn't have the right to take a life, he told police.

Ms Freeman had died in physical pain and terror of a "magnitude which is difficult to imagine", Justice Taylor said. "The reason you ended her life in such a manner is unfathomable. "Your actions were brutal and utterly senseless." Justice Taylor labelled the marriage as "perhaps of convenience". Eustace, an Indian national, had met Ms Freeman in Melbourne while he was on a visitors' visa. He had unsuccessfully proposed to her on the day they met. After their marriage, he was on a bridging visa pending his application for a partner's visa. Justice Taylor noted the victim impact statements from Ms Freeman's daughter, sister and ex-husband and three housemates. Their lives were left in "permanent disquiet", Ms Taylor said. "It's clear that Ms Freeman was a much loved and valued woman. "By your brutal actions you betrayed her trust and expectation that ... violence, let alone fatal violence, would never be done. "In simple terms, no woman should fear or suffer physical harm because her partner loses his temper." Eustace had been of previously good character and a history of hard work as a mechanic and platform rigger, the court was told. He'd since shown remorse with a contrite letter to Ms Freeman's family, organised a prayer group in prison and had good prospects of rehabilitation, Justice Taylor said. Eustace's application for a partner's visa was rejected last August. He faces deportation to India after his prison term. He was jailed for up to 25 years, with a nonparole period of 20 years. He had served 423 days in pre-sentence custody.

The Berwick Woodworkers Club officially opened their new homestead at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick. Forming in 1986 and operating out of a private backyard shed in Hampton Park, the Berwick Woodworkers are a group of people committed to creating hand-made toys for those in need, especially those doing it tough during the festive season. Member for Narre Warren South Gary Maas was welcomed by club president Len Preece, vice president Brian Crowe and committee members Elsie Hoare and John McMahon as they officially opened their new homestead on Saturday 16 March. The Woodworker’s new club space includes a modern workspace, storage area and clubroom where members can master their skills, socialise with friends and continue serving the community through their donations of toys. Mr Maas said he was delighted to meet all the club members in attendance. “The Berwick Woodworkers are a great group of people who make an important contribution to our community,” Mr Maas said. “It was wonderful to witness members showcase their new facility and display their handmade toys with great pride and excitement. “This wonderful facility will ensure that the woodworkers can continue to grow and excel in the community.” Currently, the club has more than 80 members. “Along with its increased membership the clubs reputation within the community has also grown, now being recognised, not only for its talented wood artists but also for its dedicated community support,” member Elsie Hoare said. Daydreamers Cafe specialises in breakfast, lunch, coffee and gelato. 191627

Just a daydream away Daydreamers Cafe is Beaconsfield's newest local hangout. The 200-seater cafe specialises in breakfast, lunch, coffee and gelato, and boasts fabulous indoor and outdoor seating with a comforting ambience. Since opening, the spacious cafe has attracted a range of positive reviews, with the owner Joerge Meelky and his team seeing many locals coming back for more. "The menu and products are excellent -

they're amazing. But it's really about the experience you get here," Mr Meelky said. "The cafe is for the people who come in during the day and like to relax - those who are a bit of a daydreamer - in a positive way of course. But we're also a family destination; we're for the locals. Everybody is welcome here for great service, great food and great coffee." The new 'Beaconsfield local' is the latest addition to Mr Meelky's hospitality portfolio. "Daydreamers is my fourth chapter in hos-

pitality," Mr Meelky said. "The last cafe I had before this was on High Street, Armadale, before that I was on Toorak Road, Camberwell and prior to that I was in the St Kilda towers in the CBD." Mr Meelky said he was attracted to Beaconsfield due to the opportunities the area provided and the gap in the market he believed he could fill. And while the cafe has been open for only four months, it has been a long time coming for Mr Meelky.

"The whole cafe was built from scratch. It took me one year to build. Every little screw, little detail I was present for. It was designed in a way that I saw my future cafe is going to look like - my dream cafe. I guess, in a way, that's where the name came from." Glory for powerful Bucks By Nick Creely They did it the hard way. But they did it the Buckley way. Buckley Ridges knocked off the powerful Springvale South in a Dandenong District Turf 1 grand final for the ages, in an epic that went down to the very final moments where light was fading and exhaustion was at a high. In a premiership that no one from the little powerhouse out of Park Oval will forget in a hurry, the Bucks endured so many twists and turns of momentum before Ben Watson's safe hands brought glory and a flurry of supporters streaming onto Carroll Reserve with an almost deafening roar. But that moment, which will be etched into Buckley folklore forever, was brought about by many defining moments, and day one saw the first of these many defining hands. Wild early weather on Saturday meant that the 11am start time would need to be pushed back, and after the clouds cleared and the sun finally made its way out, captain David White wasted little time in winning the toss and electing to bat on a surface that from a glance looked a batting paradise. In a tense start to the day, the Bloods struck early, with the ever dangerous champion that is Daniel Watson departing at the hands of lightning quick Matt Wetering (1/40). But stunningly, that would be the very last time Craig Slocombe's side would enjoy a wicket, they were simply blown away by firstly the discipline of the Bucks, and then finally the aggression of their superstar captain. Tempering his usually flamboyant style, White and club champion Paul Rudd came together and just built the innings, it was nothing fancy, just sensible grand final batting. White slowly worked into his natural game, and beginning to show more signs of aggression, the superstar captain-coach eventually pushed a single to reach an excellent 111-ball half-century, while Rudd remained steady, almost impenetrable in defence. While the Bloods have been serviced superbly by their group of excellent slow bowlers, the Bucks remained firm to get to 1/101 at tea, with White fully set on 55 and ready to launch while Rudd - channelling his inner Cheteshwar Pujara - was beginning to frustrate the Bloods with an incredible 38 off 170 balls. The former South African A batsman, as anticipated, lifted his intensity after the break, launching a fourth six of the innings just shortly after tea, racing to 82 just 15 minutes after the resumption of play, clearly looking to get things moving. Expansive as he is brilliant, White moved into the 90s with some truly glorious stroke play simply wowing the crowd, and fittingly, reached his tremendous century - his sixth in 16 innings in the DDCA - in the same over as Rudd reached arguably the most vital halfcentury of his stellar career. It began to become a worry for Slocombe's side as the Bucks just easily manipulated the fields in the latter stages of the days, and a simply stunning final over of the day from White was must watch cricket. Surging past 150, White creamed two sixes off the first two balls as the Bucks reached a formidable 1/238 at stumps, with 10 overs still to bat on day two, while Rudd, batting through the day in an incredible knock of determination and grit, remained on 73. With ball in hand on a warm day two with a strong breeze, Craig Slocombe looked to hold off the Bucks' surge, but stood little chance to a final flurry of boundaries. Rudd's epic came to an end for 93 off 73 balls after selflessly looking to find the boundary every ball, not quite clearing Michael Vandort on the fence to give the Bloods a second wicket. It also ended a 261-run partnership, a clear grand final record, in the process. It took two run-outs in a row to spark the interest of the Bloods' crowd, with Ben Watson falling short of his ground for eight before White - on 178 and eyeing a double hundred - was unluckily run out on the non-strikers end after the bowl ricocheted off the foot of Slocombe. It forced an end to one of the more sublime knocks seen in the DDCA history. White, who berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

The Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 1 premiers, Buckley Ridges. 191688 also carved 155 runs in the prelim a week earlier against Hallam Kalora Park, finished his freakish season for the Bucks with 1252 runs at 125.2. Let that sink in. Despite the quick wickets, the Bucks were well served by Troy Aust (28 off 14), who helped his side to 6/326 off the allotted 90 overs with a late cameo. But one of the familiar adages reverberating across the ground was to 'not discount these Bloods'. It couldn't have been truer. Starting superbly in their monster chase, it was obvious from the outset that gun opener Nathan King was in an ominous mood. Playing some cracking shots, particularly square and lofted down the ground, King's brilliant knock was by no means chanceless, but it was breathtaking. The Bloods looked frighteningly comfortable on a pitch offering nothing for the Bucks' quicks, and at lunch, going at a nice rate, they were 0/63, with King flaying the ball to all parts and showing a willingness to throw his hands at everything, while fellow opener Michael Vandort was rock-solid, and sweating on anything on his pads. But, after the break things got moving even quicker. A monster six that almost took out the sightscreen at the Box Street end rattled King along to 71, and just after the drinks break, brought up a memorable century with a single, much to the delight of the supporters. Playing a supporting role perfectly, Vandort just ticked the score along with some clever cricket shots into the gaps, and eventually crossed a brilliant half-century. Things were looking even more ominous when King lofted arguably the shot of the game - an exquisite lofted cover drive for six to lift the Bloods to 0/164 closing in on tea. But an unbelievable moment, a second of misfortune for the Bloods, King was run-out in an identical fashion to White for 134, ending his sublime knock by throwing his head back in shock after he was caught short while at the non-strikers end. It brought the six-time Wookey Medal winner Steve Spoljaric to the crease, who survived an extremely close LBW shout on the final ball before tea, with the Bloods going into the final break in a commanding position at 1/184, leaving them almost 45 overs to race down 143 runs with nine wickets in hand. Almost immediately after tea, the Bucks finally got some reward, with Jurgen Andersen (3/105) trapping Spoljaric for a duck in another defining moment in the match, and could have very nearly snared Vandort for 71 had it not been for a dropped catch in slip not long after.

Pictures: ROB CAREW

Daniel Watson is pumped after claiming an extraordinary catch off his own bowling. 191688 With something needed to happen for the Bucks to get right back into contention, there was another defining moment, and it came in the form of one of their unheralded stars - left arm spinner Wes Nicholas. Many called on him throughout the day to be brought on after it looked like the Bloods would run away with a seamless victory, and he was sublime. Taking 4/38 late in the day in some of the most critical moments of the match, all of his mountains of experience was evident. Nicholas held onto a chance off his own bowling to remove Jack Sketcher for just one, and when Matt Goodwright stretched at gully to take a brilliant catch to remove Craig Slocombe for just seven, the Bloods had slumped to 4/221, and it was game on. Vandort continued to look a class above, playing his shots and starting to gel with Malinga Bandara, but one of the more extraordinary pieces of fielding brought about his undoing for a 214-ball 90. Daniel Watson (1/33) - in what loomed as a vital spell to try and pry out the left hander - stuck out his right hand and plucked an incredible caught-and-bowled off his own bowling, after Vandort creamed one straight, but in the air. The emotion on his face, and the noise of the crowd said it all, the Bucks were pressing hard. Bandara (46) all of a sudden loomed as the man to take the game away, but Andersen - in a final spell that was full of heart - knocked over

Matt Wetering with a lethal yorker, bringing the Bloods to 6/272, and needing 55 from 74 balls. While Bandara continued to tick over the scoreboard, Nicholas was in the midst of one of the great spells, bowling with immense control and setting up Tim Ford (10) for his eventual dismissal, trapping him plumb in front to bring the Bloods to 7/289. Looking to get things moving with 27 required off 30 to win, Nicholas forced Jarrod Armitage into a false stroke, with White taking a catch at cover to make the equation simple enough: 27 needed off 29, with two wickets in hand. With tension in the air, and with no foreseeable insight into who would walk away victors, a stunning catch at cover from Matt Goodwright had the Bucks in the box seat, removing keeper Liam Hamilton (9) after he loomed dangerous with a boundary only moments before. Coming out injured, Bloods spinner Jarryd Straker was the last man to the crease, but his services weren't needed as Nicholas lumbered into the wicket on the first ball of the 89th over, with 12 needed off 12 balls. At first glance, Bandara looked to have cleared the long-on boundary for a glorious six after taking it on, but it just held and there was pin drop, and an eventual catch taken on the boundary by Watson. That was it, Buckley Ridges were 2018/19 DDCA Turf 1 premiers. Thursday, 28 March, 2019

Cavaliers catch fire By Hayley Wildes To say the Casey Cavaliers Championship Men team had a rollercoaster weekend of Big V basketball action would be an understatement. After being resoundingly beaten by the McKinnon Cougars on Saturday night on the road, the Cavs returned home on Sunday to trounce the Werribee Devils. Against McKinnon, Casey came up against a hot-shooting team that connected on a ridiculous 21/41 triples, while the Cavs only mustered 4/22 from deep. That was ultimately the difference as Casey couldn't keep up, eventually losing 115-80. Raheem Lemons (20 points and 8 rebounds) did all he could in a tough night for the squad. Less than 24 hours later, the Cavs bounced back in a big way, smashing Werribee to the tune of 39 points, 123-84. Casey dominated the rebound battle (5335) and dished out an impressive 25 assists as Lemons (31 points and 15 rebounds) starred once again. With Lemons leading the way, Brandon Polk (22 points and 10 rebounds) and Matt Donlan (21 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals) were also impressive. The Cavs own a 2-1 record. The Championship Women made light work of McKinnon on Saturday night. Despite not making a triple (0/10), the Cavs shot 60% on two-point shots to come away with a massive 32-point win, 87-55. Jaimie-Lee Jeffs (22 points and 16 rebounds) was unstoppable on both ends of the court, while Megan Craig (16 points and 7 rebounds)

and Tarryn Wilkin (15 points and 8 rebounds) played vital roles. The Cavs are 2-0 on the season. The Youth League 1 Men claimed two impressive wins over the weekend. On Saturday night in Geelong, Casey defeated Corio Bay 83-77. Five players scored in double figures, led by a massive game from Blake Taylor (15 rebounds, 14 points and 7 assists). Less than 24 hours later, they were back in action and took care of Werribee at home, 9778. Again, it was a team effort with six players scoring in double figures as the Cavs dominated in the paint, outscoring the Devils 64-24. Luke Beard (20 points) led the way for Casey, who own a 3-0 record. The Youth League 1 Women also scored a dominant win, easily accounting for Corio Bay on the road, 107-68. With 34 assists, the Cavs ran rings around the Stingrays, piling on 76 points in the paint, compared to just 26 for their opponents. Lauren Tuplin (29 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists) put on a clinic, while Tess Young (14 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals) and Bec Peacock (16 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals) also put on a show. The Cavs are 1-1 on the season. Saturday night sees a Championship and Youth League 1 Men double-header tip off at Casey Stadium from 6pm, before the Youth League 1 Men hit the road on Sunday to take on Ballarat. On Sunday, a Championship and Youth League 1 Women double-header takes place at Casey Stadium from 1:30pm.

Lionhearted Lawford fires By Nick Creely

12400176-SN40-18

VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - SEMI-FINAL Lionhearted Fitzroy Doncaster fast bowler Trent Lawford broke the hearts of Dandenong, ending their premiership defence in stunning, almost implausible fashion in the final over of a thriller at Camberwell Sports Ground. Due to ground works, the Panthers were forced out of their home at Shepley Oval, but walked into the box seat with only a win or a draw seeing them advance through to a preliminary final. Winning the toss and sending the Lions into bat, the Panthers took regular wickets throughout the innings, with James Nanopoulos (4/79), tweaker Akshat Buch (3/50) and quick Jakeb Thomas (2/46) all bowling superbly to have them 5/101. But a late charge by Liam Banthorpe (31), Trent Lawford (26) and Nick Fletcher (36) boosted the Lions to 9/226, before skipper Ejaaz Alavi declared knowing all too well that his side needed 10 wickets to keep their premiership dreams alive. It was a simply horror start to the run chase for the Panthers, with key men Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth falling within the first two overs, and despite clearly looking to play out the draw from the early stages, another two scalps had the Panthers absolutely reeling at 4/31. Forsyth's astonishing season ended on 1297 runs at an average of 51.9, an incredible year for the champion opener. With the Lions' quicks looking menacing with ball in hand, Lincoln Edwards and James Nanopoulos went to work, riding plenty of pressure before playing with their usual panache, and the pair swiftly put on 98-runs before Jack Rudd (2/14) trapped Nanopoulos for 42. Ed Newman also fell victim to Rudd only moments later for a duck, and at 6/132, the game was quickly slipping away from the reigning champs. But Edwards was defiant, playing an absolute gem of an innings to claw his side back into the contest, caressing an exquisite 109 before emerging quick Sam Elliott (2/55) snared his key wicket to bring the Panthers to 7/188. Peter Cassidy (18 off 117 balls) was rocksolid as the Panthers desperately scrambled to take the game deep and play out a draw, essentially a win. But enter the man of the moment, big Trent Lawford. In a stunning final spell that ended the Panthers' season in one foul swoop, Lawford snared the edge of Cassidy, but the defiant lower order brought the game to the final over, and was clear favourites to see out the final six balls and advance to a preliminary final. But champions rise for the occasion, and with three balls to go, the Lions needed two wickets. Trapping Jacques Augustin in front for 18 off 59 balls, the final wicket Jakeb Thomas strode to the wicket with the task at hand, but stunningly, Lawford got one straight enough to trap him in front, giving his side a magical win with just a ball to spare. It caps off a brilliant title defence for the Panthers, who overcame a slow start to finish fourth as well as take out the inaugural Victorian Super Slam and Grand Slam VICTORIAN SUB-DISTRICT - NORTH EAST REVIEW - GRAND FINAL An incredible grand final display from Noble Park star Issy Perera was not quite enough for the Parkers to claim the silverware against Plenty Valley at Pat Wright Oval on the weekend.

Shehan Perera looks to get things moving for Noble Park late on day two. 191687 The Bats won the toss and elected to bat, with a sparkling 79 to skipper James Dickinson lifting them to a more than competitive 212 in 80 overs. But it was the performance with the ball from Perera that was the highlight of the opening day, snaring 8/46 from 18 overs, turning in an astonishing display that virtually single handily got the Parkers into a position to potentially pounce on a memorable flag. The pressure was on after a relatively positive start to the chase orchestrated by more runs to skipper Luke Wintle (46), who scored his eighth score above 40 in a row to cross over 800 runs for the season. But from there, the Bats went to work, wearing down the Parkers to roll them for 158, with only tail ender Shehan Perera (27) showing some resistance late in the piece. Star Bats all-rounder Ryan Pearson (3/19) was the pick of the bowlers to cap off a tremendous individual season. MPCA - PROVINCIAL Langwarrin has gone back-to-back in the Mornington Peninsula top flight after taking their run chase against Sorrento right to the final overs of the day in a classic match at Alexandra Park. After winning the toss and batting, the Sharks racked up an impressive 9/220 off their 80 overs, with Leigh Poholke (65) and Jed Falck (51) doing well, while with the ball Matt Prosser (4/47) did some fine work, particularly through the middle. The Kangaroos started superbly to their chase to compile 69 for the first wicket, courtesy of Prosser who was in fine form with 68, before a little wobble at the top had them 4/12. But skipper Travis Campbell (49) and Mal Couuts (23) guided the Kangaroos home in the 77th over and with only a matter of minutes left to go in the match, to see their side to an incredible four-wicket win.

Noble Park's Andrew Berman shapes to hit the ball. 191687 Former Tooradin champion Tom Hussey, while only contributing with five on the day, was instrumental all season in his first season

at the club since departing the WGCA, scoring 426 runs at 28.4, as well as snaring 22 catches for the season.

Steven Spoljaric won his sixth Alan Wookey Medal last Wednesday night. 190166

Stunning sixth for Spolly By Nick Creely The legendary Steve Spoljaric claimed an astonishing sixth Alan Wookey Medal as the champion Turf 1 player of the season in the Dandenong District Cricket Association at the vote count last Wednesday night. The former Parkfield and Cranbourne champion and now Springvale South star enjoyed yet another mammoth season for the Bloods, with the 41-year-old ending his truly extraordinary cricket career in 2018/19 with another individual accolade. 'Spolly' - bowling less this season, mainly due to the fact that the Bloods have been so well served by their spinners - was in vintage

touch with the bat in a brilliant Turf 1 campaign, cracking 728 runs during the home and away season, including three centuries and five half-centuries, as well as contributing seven wickets. The association legend - who has now won six Wookey medals since 2010/11, to go along with a Ryder Medal in 2007/08 while playing for Hawthorn-Monash in the Premier competition - narrowly pipped Hallam Kalora Park star Jordan Hammond by just a single vote late in the count, while St Mary's all-rounder Ruwantha Kellepotha finished third despite the Saints finishing last on the table, in what is a truly brilliant effort. Leading with just two rounds to go, Ham-

mond - who also got the chance to play in the Victorian SuperSlam with Casey-South Melbourne - enjoyed a stellar season for the Hawks, notching up almost 500 runs to go with 36 wickets. After each Turf 1 round, the two umpires place a 3,2,1 vote for who they deem to have been the best players on the field, with the maximum a player can receive in a round being six votes. The DDCA also announced its official Turf 1 Team of the Year on the night. Officer is set to appeal By Nick Creely A bitterly disappointed Officer Senior Football Club is preparing an appeal to AFL Victoria after a request for their women's side to be transferred across to the combined Eastern/AFL Outer East competition was knocked back. The Kangaroos' committee moved to lodge an appeal at a meeting last Tuesday night, 19 March. The club officially transferred to the AFL Outer East commission in early August of 2018 after originally passing the motion to shift leagues on 28 May 2018 , under the assumption that this would mean that both the men and women's football teams, as well as netball teams, would be transferring leagues in 2019. But as it stands, the Officer men's side will be playing in Division One of the AFL Outer East, while the women will line up in the South Eastern Women's competition, which is governed by AFL South East. It meant that the club had to then apply again for a shift in leagues in January of this year, but this time only for the women's side. This has been knocked back. The AFL South East commission met on Monday night, and have stuck with its original position of declining the transfer across to the Eastern/Outer East competition. Officer president Nick McLennan said that the club is one structure, with one senior football committee, and that in their view, both men and women need to be playing in the same league. "The Officer women's team falls under the jurisdiction of the Officer Senior Football Club committee and are managed by the football department as are our senior men's teams. We consider ourselves to be one club, not a men's club and a women's club," he said. "Our (original) application to change leagues was made on behalf of the entire club, not a seg38 STAR NEWS

ment of the club or for any particular team. "If we had sought to only transfer a part of the club we would have sought to clarify that position." McLennan said that the club was extremely "frustrated" at the decision, and will be seeking more answers in the coming days and weeks. "Members of our women's team have previously stated they feel less important than our men's team, whilst this is not the case, how can we be expected to defend this position when people in positions of authority make decisions like this," he said. "Ultimately this decision hurts women's football, the uncertainty this decision has generated has already seen the side lose its coach who resigned and sighted this decision as a key reason. This decision is also affecting our ability to recruit and retain players. The side made it clear which league they wanted to be in and the commission has gone against their wishes. "I just hope it's not too late to turn things around and hopefully common sense will prevail. "I simply cannot understand why AFL South East would be seeking to hold up the transfer of our women's team when we as a club have been very clear about our desire to shift away from their organisation." McLennan added that the club's relationship with AFL South East was simply not tenable, and confirmed that the club has had discussions with AFL Outer East in early March, saying that there was "a spot open for them". "Based on recent history and the issues we've had with SEFNL I'm not convinced John (Anderson) and members of AFL South East actually understand how hard it is to run a local football club," he said. "We're all volunteers and it's a bit rich to be told what's best for our club by somebody who hasn't been to one of our games for years.

The Officer Senior Football Club is preparing an appeal to AFL Victoria. "I can confirm that I've had discussions with AFL Outer East as recently as three weeks ago, and while this is a messy situation, I can not thank them enough for their support during this time." But, AFL South East region general manager John Anderson explained the process to the News, saying that the club didn't apply for their women's side to be moved until well after the transfer application deadline, and that there was no indication that the club intended for its women's side to be moved across in the initial application. "An application for the Officer women's team to move to AFL Outer East was not received until 29 January 2019, which is well past the transfer application deadline," he said. "The commission met in late January and declined the transfer request from South Eastern Women's Football (SEWF). "The commission had previously consid-

ered the transfer applications of the eight SEFNL football and netball clubs and approved their moves to Outer East and West Gippsland. "At that time there had been no application from any of the SEFNL Clubs to move their women's teams to the combined Eastern/Outer East competition, therefore the applications were not considered by the commission within the timeline under the AFL Vic Rules. "The SEFNL Clubs with women's teams in SEWF are Beaconsfield, Cranbourne, Officer and Pakenham. Only Pakenham and Officer requested a move to the combined Eastern/ Outer East Women's competition but both were declined by the Commission." The News contacted AFL Outer East, who declined to comment on the issue. The News also understands that even if the Kangaroos' appeal is rejected by AFL Victoria, they will be applying to transfer leagues next season regardless. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
