Berwick's Brentwood Park Primary School has celebrated their richness in diversity with a spectacular show of cultural performances. Grade 6 teacher Melissa Butcher said the day was hailed as a success with the school recognising their cultural diversity with a Multicultural Big Day Out on Monday 25 March. "Students rotated through some amazing activities provided by their class teachers in multi-age groups," she said. Fun activities included a Chinese shadow puppetry and calligraphy class, African weaving, Greek and Scottish dancing, Japanese origami, Egyptian masks, Maori Poi balls, Venetian masks, Spanish pinatas, Indian henna hand designs, robotics and more.

Ms Dzedins said: "It was very frightening, I was very lucky." "I could see bits of car flying up into the air, like I think mirrors or I don't know; door handles, something like that," she added. "There must have been so people just affected literally by the accident." Cardinia Highway Patrol arrested two men and a woman who attempted to flee on foot after their ute crashed into a truck on the South Gippsland Highway. The driver, a 26-year-old male from Cheltenham, tested positive to methamphetamine and had his licence disqualified. He was charged with aggravated carjacking; eight counts of theft of a motor vehicle, three counts of arson, three burglaries, and three

A Casey resident has described the moment a driver "hurtled" towards her after an alleged stolen car wound its way through Hampton Park on Monday 1 April. Robin Dzedins of Lynbrook said she was turning left into Camms Road from South Gippsland Highway about 2.30pm when she saw a car "swerving like a maniac." "I could only see it head on hurtling straight at me. Luckily I was turning left, had I been going straight ahead I would've been hit," Ms Dzedins said. "I thought he was going to hit the side of my car. "I looked behind and saw bits of car he had

hit flying in the air and I was thinking 'God, I haven't been killed and hope no one behind me is killed.'" It came as police were led on a two-hour wild pursuit which began about 12.30pm after a four-wheel-drive was allegedly stolen from Cranbourne. The vehicle was later set alight, police say, before the speedsters fled in a station wagon and later hijacked a ute in Hampton Park. The ute crashed where police say the driver was seen getting out carrying a rifle, which was used to carjack a Ford ute in Carrum Downs. Witnesses say they saw the vehicle driving on the wrong side of the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne.

IN BRIEF

Trees ‘need to go’ By Brendan Rees A Lysterfield South resident fears it's just a matter of time before falling branches on his nature strip will harm someone. A petition of 14 signatures was presented to Casey Council on 5 March from residents of Hillside Court, Panorama Court and Parkview Terrace, asking for the trees to be removed and replaced with suitable ones. Head petitioner Peter Wardley says gum trees on Hillside Court - with some overhanging on properties - were dropping branches up to three metres long with "many dead branches just waiting to fall." "The street is an eyesore," he said. "You only have to look around the street to see evidence of them on front lawns and pathways causing a tripping danger for pedestrians." Mr Wardley said bark, twigs, branches and leaves were also blocking drains causing flooding of properties during heavy periods of rain, as well as lifting footpaths. "The piles of leaves and bark that build up in the street and down the lane way to the retarding basin are a constant fire danger in summer. "On windy days your television or satellite reception drops in and out because of the proximity of large trees," he added. "No grass will grow and many front yards are affected with the lack of water and sunlight creating dustbowls. According to Mr Wardley the trees are in contravention of council's own tree policy: "We are entitled to a pleasant looking street just like the rest of the estate." Mr Wardley thanked Four Oaks Ward Councillor Rosalie Crestani for her support.

Casey manager of city presentation David Richardson said following the tabling of the petition council officers would be "assessing the potential removal and replacement of the trees in accordance with council's resolution." Resident Donna Everard said she scarred her knee after tripping on an uneven footpath on a sidewalk off Hillside Court. "I fell over going down that path about a year ago," she said. "I wouldn't call it dangerous but I always watch where I'm walking now - took me by surprise." Isabelle Murphy, a senior associate at Zapa-

ras Lawyers, who specialises in public liability matters, said the footpaths should be free of hazards. "Whilst a trip or fall may seem relatively harmless, in some instances it can lead to significant injury and it is important that all efforts are made to mitigate these risks," she said. "Members of the community are right to expect that when walking down their local shopping strip that communal spaces such as these are free of hazards which may jeopardise their safety."`

Surges at the pump mean petrol price pain By Brendan Rees

12397283-CG35-18

A Lyndhurst resident says surging fuel prices at the pump was hurting his hip pocket. Michael Drew, who drives a Subaru Liberty to his workplace in Bayswater, said fuel prices were such a rip off he had avoided using tollways. "If I go on the Eastlink it costs me 20 bucks a day," he said. I'm only getting $23 an hour. It costs you an hour's pay. "We're paying far too much for fuel. I always try and buy it at the right times." Melbourne's unleaded petrol prices had risen since March 15 as the retail discounting cycle ended and global crude oil prices lifted, according to CommSec senior economist Ryan Felsman. However, he said motorists should start to see relief as fuel prices "should weaken" in the next week with the next discounting cycle expected to start after pump prices peaked on March 20 at 152.4 cents a litre. "Rising fuel costs are another constraint on household budgets, especially with most Aussies booking-in blocks of annual leave for the

Michael Drew of Lyndhurst fills up at Coles Express in Berwick. Picture: CONTRIBUTED upcoming school, Easter and Anzac Day holidays," he said. Some of the highest unleaded prices revealed on Petrolspy.com on Friday 29 March was Coles Express Berwick on Clyde Road

(149.9c a litre); BP Hallam Road Hampton Park (143.9c a litre); Caltex Cranbourne North on South Gippsland Highway (138.9c a litre), and Cole Express Hampton Park on South Gippsland Highway (145.9c a litre). According to Mr Drew, Coles and 7-Eleven didn't "seem to have a lot of cheap stuff." "United seems to be the cheapest all the time. Coles is a joke with their four cents discount," he said. Mr Drew, who works as a courier truck driver, said the company he worked for was also feeling the pinch: "The boss isn't happy. It's another 30 bucks he can do without." RACV manager of vehicle engineering, Michael Case said when fuel prices reached an "unsustainable level" where profit margins were very low or even running at a loss "the fuel price gets driven back up again by some of the retailers." "The majority of petrol stations will then follow this upwards trend," he said. "As the price is currently still near the top of the cycle and trending down, we would advise motorists to top up rather than fill up where possible."

Casey Crime Investigation Unit is appealing for information following an arson incident in Cranbourne on Wednesday 27 March. Police were called to a nature strip on the eastern side of the South Gippsland Highway between Courtney Avenue and Thompsons Road, Cranbourne after a by passer allegedly observed smoke coming from a tree. Police are seeking any witnesses who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area prior to this time. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au and quote incident number 19011237

Police pounce on cannabis crop-houses A police operation has seized more than 1000 cannabis plants from crop-houses in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. As part of Operation Bagration, police from the Southern Metro Region, Division Three and Divisional Response Unit targeted 13 hydroponic grow-houses between 19-28 March. Police seized and destroyed 1167 plants. They had been assisted by electricity companies in processing the unlawful electricity bypasses and associated crimes. Police say the raids significantly disrupted organised criminal activity and the local supply of cannabis.

Blisters and a tough feat It was no easy feat for a Cranbourne resident and her sister who tackled a mammoth charity walk, as they honoured their mother who died unexpectedly a week earlier. Angela Hadfield and her sister Christine Jones, teamed up with another pair of sisters, Berwick resident Kym-Maree Ingram and her sister, Danni Heinze, to take on a 100km walk in the Oxfam Trailwalker fundraiser this year. They joined about 2800 people who set out from Lysterfield Park in Narre Warren North on Friday 29 March for the trail that snaked its way over Mt Dandenong and through the eastern suburbs. The sisters, whose team name was The Twisted Sisters, have known each other for more than three decades, having met as young girls at synchronised ice skating comps, and all went on to compete in the sport at a national level representing Australia. However, tragedy struck the team when Angela and Christine's mum Denise unexpectedly passed away. But the pair said Denise raised them to see things through and they, along with KymMaree and Danni, were determined to complete the 100km trail in her honour. And that's exactly what they just did. Spurred on by a tight-knit trail walker community who sent the team overwhelming messages of support, all four of The Twisted Sisters team completed the 100km trail on Saturday 30 March after 30 hours and 25 minutes. The team battled a lot physically to get to the finish line in that time including rain, cold, blisters, and sore knees. While reaching the finish line was an emotional moment in itself for most walkers, it was particularly for Angela, Christine, Kym-Maree and Danni because they knew Denise would be proud.

$3m windfall for football, netball

Angry driver assaults boy

By Brendan Rees The clubrooms of Berwick Football and Netball Club will be revitalised with a multi-million funding boost announced. The long-awaited funding will go towards new netball change facilities; redevelopment of football and umpire change facilities; and redevelopment of the club canteen at Edwin Flack Reserve. La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the Federal Government had committed to $1.5 million in the redevelopment which the club desperately needed. "The facilities, especially for females are absolutely shocking. For the netball girls, they haven't got any change rooms facilities, any showers, (any only) two toilets," he said. "It's an embarrassment that it's been allowed to get to this. "The canteen facility was actually closed by council last year," he added. Mr Wood provided a "heartfelt thanks" to the club who had been petitioning for a redevelopment. "We want this to rock and roll really quickly. Council is going to have the money available in the budget," he said. "Sport keeps young people engaged and teaches them skills and team work, leadership and working together." At their 19 March meeting, Casey Council would pour $2 million to the project should the Federal Government match it. In a statement, Casey Council said it was pleased at the $1.5 million commitment which, along with Council's commitment of

Three-million dollars has been committed to help restore the Berwick Football and Netball club. $1.5 million will mean a total of $3 million will be delivered to benefit the Berwick Football/ Netball Club and other user groups in this financial year. Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said they were so grateful for the support of Mr Wood and thanked the club for their strong advocacy. "We are committed to providing 50/50 funding to ensure that we can deliver on this much needed upgrade to Edwin Flack Reserve and provide great outcomes for so many in the football and netball community," she said.

"Mr Wood and the Berwick Football and Netball Club have been advocating strongly for these upgrade works to further invest in health and fitness, leadership and team work outcomes and to deliver improved facilities for our community. Mr Wood said his next goal was to find a home for the Berwick Junior Football Club: "The problem is that they haven't got a home so I'm very keen to give them funding for a building facility." "The council is trying to come up with a solution to find a ground for them for the future," he said.

A 14-year old boy has allegedly been grabbed by the throat and dragged onto a nature strip in Berwick after a confronting road rage incident. Police have appealed to witnesses following the Monday 25 March scuffle where it's alleged two 14 year old boys were riding their bicycles in the middle of Chirnside Drive before turning into Bemersyde Drive about 3.30pm. A white ute also turned into Bemersyde Drive and overtaken the riders before pulling over in front of them, blocking their path. Police say one of the riders has ridden on to the nature strip, while the other has tried to ride around the ute; however, the driver has opened the car door causing the rider to stop. The driver has grabbed the boy by the throat before dragging him on to the nature strip and throwing him down, police allege. The driver then started to abuse the other rider and pushed him up against the bus shelter. Police believe there were a number of people in the area who witnessed the incident, however, at this time have spoken to one witness. The witness that police have spoken to believed that someone may have filmed the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact Senior Constable Schmitzer at Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111. Alternatively contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com. au and quote incident number 190109949.

Fix our roads!

Fees a cat-astrophe

I write concerning the O’Shea Road project and effects on the local population in that area. We already experience constant and at times intrusive noise from the Monash freeway, enough to wake you up at 2am as it did this morning (Tuesday, 2 April). This road has some noise reduction features (which are useless). O’Shea Road will become a six-lane road from the interchange to Clyde Road. Eventually, Greaves Road and Pound Road will also be developed in the same manner to Shrives Road. However, as it is a gazetted road site, there will be no noise reduction features in the final design. The Monash Freeway is relatively level. O’Shea road has some sizeable rises and falls. Further there will be four sets of lights between Soldiers Road and Clyde Road. I have not been able to find out if there will be any curfew times for trucks to use this road. There are some thousands of homes that will not only be affected by greater traffic through the area but increased noise and other pollution that does not appear to be addressed at any level of government. I have approached our local federal and state members and candidates and our local councillors to seek more information, ask what they really know about the project and also to correct some of the information that they have been putting in our letterboxes. There has been a very mixed response to these efforts. I want to work collaboratively with everyone to achieve an outcome that helps us all. The issues I have put here are really just the start of a number of matters that are progressing in the Berwick area. I ask that a public meeting be convened to try and get a better outcome for all. James O’Loughlin, Berwick

I am a resident living in the City of Casey and a cat owner. I write you this letter to complain about registration fees for cat owners. Last year the registration fee for my cat increased from $52 to now $54.50. I have written an email to the City of Casey Council two years in a row to complain about cat registration fees and have had no reply at all. I have looked at the notice to see if there was any reason for this increase in fees and I have found none. I did find however, that my registration fee for owning a cat helps the council to pay for the maintenance of dog parks and assist to manage animal inquiries. Please explain why some of the money charged for cat registration fees should go towards dogs? This seems rather unfair and unjustifiable. I have never owned a dog. So, why have my registration fees for my little cat increased? Has the cat population doubled in a year? Has a bird population of magpies or miners become extinct from too many pet cats? Have more tomcats been on the prowl recently? Have our pet cats signed up for unemployment benefits? Perhaps we have all become a nation of cat haters. Is this why the council thinks that cat owners should pay up? The line of thinking that cats are destructive to the environment is only partly deserved. Responsible cat owners that register their cats, microchip them, de-sex them, provide cat runs for them and bring them in at night are responsible, law-abiding citizens who should not be held responsible for picking up the costs incurred by those that are irresponsible. Those that purchase animals for a birthday or Christmas present and have had a change in mind in wanting to keep them, then later dump them in bushland a few months later should be held accountable and punished for it. Rather than raise my registration fees why does the council not increase fines for those that don’t follow the standard legal requirements! We already pay enough for rates considering that the cost of living increases yearly and most people’s wages have not gone up in about 10 years. Ratepayers in Casey have seen big expenditure from our council. It is absurd that our council has been able to fit the bill for Bunjil Place and pay millions of dollars for land development at Berwick Springs, among other things. However, the council implies it can’t look after a few dog parks and catch a few rogue cats without increasing registration fees. Below is an outline of the registration fees I have received thus far: * Cat registration fees of 2016 $45; * Cat registration fees of 2017 $50; * Cat registration fees of 2018 $52; and * Cat registration fees of 2019 $54.50. In comparison the council of Baw Baw Shire only charges cat registration fees to the sum of $39, which begs the question again as to how Casey Council can not only charge higher fees but also increase those fees steadily each year. This is nothing short of a travesty! I urge the council to reconsider raising its fees. Registration is necessary but the cost of

“I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!“ Luke 19:40 The above quote came to my mind after I had read the article “ Mad minute“ by Brendan Rees, Cam Lacadou-Wells, and Kyra Gillespie, as published in Star Journal (Monday, 25 March). I therefore feel I cannot hold my peace any more. Referring to that article, I personally believe Cr Sam Aziz was perfectly right in doing what he did on that occasion. Could we ask Maureen of Narre Warren North and her husband why they were “appalled“ by Cr Aziz’s behaviour? Both “Adam Sadiqzai a community leader and a proud Muslim“ and Cr Wayne Smith are wrong in questioning the motives of Cr Aziz. As a duly elected representative of Casey residents, Cr Aziz acted in good faith, and he should be congratulated for his courage to move where others fear to tread. To the credit of Cr Aziz, I would like to end with the following: “After all three minute silences, Cr. Aziz told the Chamber: We will take a minute silence every time we need to grieve collectively with humanity and share the sorrow of those that are simply innocent victims of rampant crime.“ Eliezer Francois JP, Endeavour Hills

I have checked out what is thorium, online, and I don’t have a chemistry degree. It does look like it is less a risk for accidents, which is plainly better, than straight out enriched yellowcake uranium/plutonium nuclear power plants. It looks like it could be more easy to switch off the reactors. But it looks like any thorium reactor needs some of these highly dangerous ingredients to get it working. If Cr Aziz would explain to the public what this is about, or get some expert to, it doesn’t mean we’d have to support it, but at least we’d know what he’s talking about. Meanwhile there is talk of a gas-fuelled power plant in Dandenong in the Herald Sun. There are, I dare say in Casey, some places to put in wind generators, if someone wanted to, I suppose. Karen Young, via email

our fees is unreasonable. Furthermore they should not be raised without notice to pet owners. Registration fees should not be raised on a whim by the council just because they can. The council in this regard has been acting in an arbitrary fashion. I am expressing my disappointment and voicing my concerns of which I am sure will be supported by other cat owners throughout the entire City of Casey. Maria Alaimo, via email

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On 28 March a story was shared on the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page about Casey ratepayers that will be billed a whopping $70,000 to send councillors and council staff on business trips to China and the US this year. Here is how our readers reacted online: Sharon Gee: But we have potholes on Ballarto Road that are dangerous and damaging to road users. Cost my daughter two new tyres and a wheel alignment last week. Luckily she kept the car on the road. Not so lucky to other road users. No money to spend here by the council. Sue Baldizoni: No way ! Not at our expense! Michael Rogers: Local government means local. We have federal ministers in various portfolios to go on ’study trips’. When I look around Casey, I am very disappointed at the state of the municipality as are many of the locals I talk to socially. Agree with Sue and various other comments regarding Casey councils performance. Matt McMaster: Cr Rosalie Crestani: “.. it’s my gut feeling that something smells rotten in the state of China” 40k spent and we get a “gut feeling“...

Berwick's Bob Juggins celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by loving family and friends on Saturday 30 March. Having grown up in Geelong, his childhood consisted of playing in the Geelong Junior City Band and collecting stamps and coins. The accountant (of 60 years) later married his childhood sweetheart Val at Noble St Methodist Church Newton on 22 March, 1951. They have four daughters along with eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. From there, he moved to Berwick, where he has lived for 22 years. Mr Juggins was an active member in various organisations including Corio Bay Rowing Club, a life member at Richmond Rowing Club and Berwick Probus. He's a lover of fine wines and whisky and enjoys indulging in cheese and confectionary. 12413372-CG11-19

An extra 20 kindergarten places will be on offer per year following the multi-million revamp of a Narre Warren family and community centre. The $2.8 million redevelopment of Strathaird Family and Community Centre was officially re-opened on Wednesday 27 March. The centre features a consulting room for Maternal and Child Health services, a fouryear-old kindergarten room, an outdoor play area, and upgrades to the existing large multipurpose community room with modern audio-visual technology, a kitchen, courtyard and an extra community meeting room. City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon joined councillors, the Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek, and Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas for the re-opening celebrations. "Today we celebrate the delivery of several extra spaces, which will cater for an additional 20 students this year and provide opportunities for the centre to increase its overall intake to 162 students," Cr Stapledon said. "Centres like this allow our children to learn new skills and our community groups to run recreational and support programs; so essentially, this is a space where together our community will grow." Council secured a $1.4 million grant in 2016 through the State Government's Growing Suburbs Fund, which was matched by Council to deliver additional kindergarten spaces and enhanced community facilities at Strathaird. Mr Maas said: "It's great to see the Andrews Labor Government's Growing Suburbs Fund delivering projects like the Strathaird Family and Community Centre, providing vital services to growing communities like Narre Warren South."

President Kathy Burgstahler the event highlighted peace, harmony and understanding. "Now more than ever, in light of the tragic events of the past month, the Casey Multi-faith Network needs to exist and be supported," she said. Ms Burgstahler also thanked all councillors for their "unwavering support," "Cr Rosario in particular has attended practically every meeting we have had for the past two years and has worked tirelessly with our Network to ensure that it is inclusive of all," she said. Cr Damien Rosario said the Casey Multifaith Network had the power to unite everyone in a harmonious place, and congratulated the team for a successful event. "It's great to support such a fine group of volunteers," he said. "I also acknowledge the outstanding leadership of president Kathy Burgstahler and her dedicated committee of volunteers." The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

A new-look Cranbourne Library has been unveiled following a major upgrade. City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon, Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards and Chief Executive Officer of Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) Chris Buckingham were joined by members of the community to present the $85,000 makeover on Thursday 28 March. The library has been transformed into a friendlier and integrated learning space by creating a more accessible entrance and making better use of office space. Works include the installation of a tech desk to improve customer service and create more floor space for innovation and learning, as well as better connection between community members and staff. Cr Stapledon, who read a story to local children following the unveiling, said the project was vital to ensuring the community space would continue to offer support and services. "The foyer is now a welcoming space, available for people to relax, connect and unwind with full access to Wi-Fi," she said. "Council thanks the State Government for their grant and for acknowledging and understanding that libraries can change lives." Mr Buckingham said the library's overhaul has helped create a more welcoming space for the community. "It has been a terrific partnership with the City of Casey and the State Government to deliver a cost-effective improvement to the Cranbourne Library," Mr Buckingham said. "Libraries are a place where people can gather safely, share stories and learn at their own pace." Ms Richards said the upgrade ensured communities could access vital educational and social programs. "Cranbourne is a busy, rapidly growing area and deserves a modern and inclusive library to support our local communities," she said. The Cranbourne Library is currently exhib-

By Brendan Rees Fountain Gate Secondary College welcomed local primary schools with a tour of their new Endeavour Centre at Fountain Gate Secondary College. STEM student leaders, school captains, principals and teaching staff from local feeder primary schools were introduced to Fountain Gate Secondary College's (FGSC) new Endeavour Centre on Friday 15 March. The tour involved demonstrations of the computer numerical control router, 3D printing laboratory and new state of the art science laboratory at the centre which was launched at the start of the year.

Young stars set to shine By Jessica Anstice Six young Cardinia and Casey performers will trek across the USA to showcase their talents as part of the Aussie All Stars and Rising Stars USA Broadway tour to represent Australia in the enormous USA Junior Theatre Festival. The young stars from Masquerade Talent Studio Berwick will perform, meet with industry professionals and stars and experience shows on Broadway. "We are so excited for these performers and their families," studio director Carmen Powell said. The performance adventure will take place during the 2020 January school holidays. The group will travel to New York, Atlanta and Los Angeles. After spending a week in New York City collaborating on a performance piece under the

guidance of some of the best industry experts and Broadway performers, they will then attend Broadway performances and acting workshops while also exploring the sights of New York City. In Atlanta, they will join 6500 like-minded young performers at the Junior Theatre Festival. This is where the Aussie All Stars shine. They will perform, receive feedback, attend skill development workshops presented by the world's best teaching artists, watch performances of brand new musicals and get advice from celebrity guests. After the festival, the Aussie All Stars head to Los Angeles, visit Universal Studios, see the Hollywood sign, stroll down Hollywood Boulevard and finally visit the happiest place on earth, Disneyland where they will be taken behind the scenes for an exclusive Disney performing arts workshop.

Primary school students saw first-hand Year 7 students designing and building their own 'Endeavour Box', Year 8 students designing and developing their own 'Apron' and Year 9 students beginning to construct their own Rube Goldberg. College Principal Pete Hanratty said it was an excellent opportunity for the group to view the Endeavour curriculum in action. "FGSC will be launching an Endeavour Primary Taster Program in which Year 5 and 6 students will have the opportunity to attend the college and participate in STEM activities on selected afternoons in the Endeavour Centre," he said.

Local heroes’ rinks hijinx By Brendan Rees Emergency services have hung up their boots for an evening, gathering at the Narre Warren Bowls Club for some social competition on Monday 18 March. The event involved teams of 12 players each from Narre Warren police, ambulance, SES, and CFA stations. Club member Eric Sydenham said the inaugural competition was supported by the Bendigo Bank and allowed the opportunity for emergency services to bond in a social atmosphere. "These four organisations would normally only interact in stressful circumstances whilst

attending emergency situations," he said. "Narre Warren Bowls Club was proud to host this event and in doing so recognise the enormous contribution these volunteers make to our local community-often risking their own safety in the process." Ambulance Victoria Berwick Branch took out bragging rights by winning on the night, ahead of the All-stars team which filled in for the police team. The event proved was so popular that it will now be held in the months of September and March with continuing sponsorship from Narre Warren South Branch of Bendigo Bank. Making her mark in politics By Brendan Rees Shalaaka Brahmavar from Berwick's Nossal High School has spoken about her amazing experience after attending a national summit in Canberra. Shalaaka attended the 24 the National Schools Constitutional Convention held at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in Canberra from 19-21 March. "It really highlighted the importance of democracy and how vital the involvement of the public is to shape the future," she said. "Being able to meet and question several important politicians, including the Speaker of the House, Tony Smith, and Deputy President of the Senate, Sue Lines, was an amazing opportunity that I never would have had otherwise." Shalaaka joined about 120 senior student delegates who debated the topic: 'A new constitutional preamble for Australia?' A variety of constitutional experts were on hand including Professor Kim Rubenstein from the ANU College of Law who discussed the context and background of a preamble. Shalaaka said it gave her the opportunity to meet like-minded students from all across the country. "The entire atmosphere of the event was quite formal and took place in some of the most important locations for Australian democracy, including the New and Old Parliament Houses as well as the High Court," she said. "I'm immensely grateful for this opportunity and after spending time with so many amazing students, I think it's safe to say that the future of the country is in great hands." Student groups prepared draft preambles which were voted on in a mock referendum conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission.

Police release CCTV after bag robbery

Jacqui, Hout and Meyri celebrate Harmony Day activities. 191337

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Centre of harmony By Brendan Rees English language students at the Narre Warren Foundation Learning Centre have united in sharing the joy of harmony on Tuesday 19 March. This year students and staff wore beautiful, traditional dresses from their cultural backgrounds to celebrate Harmony Day. A multicultural lunch was prepared by stu-

dents while the training room was decorated with balloons, streamers and cut-outs of people wearing traditional clothing from different countries. They also learnt Australian songs including 'We are Australian,' and 'Waltzing Matilda.' Students participated in fun learning activities focused on Harmony Day and general knowledge of different countries.

"It's such an enjoyable way of learning about and celebrating the diversity of our students' cultural backgrounds," literacy coordinator/compliance assistant Clea Nicol said. "We're able to effectively uphold values such as respect and acceptance." One student said: "I enjoyed our Harmony Day very much. I ate many dishes from different countries. We celebrated just like a family."

Police are investigating a robbery whereby a female bandit allegedly punched a woman to the face after making demands for her handbag in Narre Warren on Monday 18 March. Casey Crime Investigation Unit is investigating the incident in which two victims were followed by a group of 10 to 15 young people after leaving a shopping centre about 6.30pm. After a short amount of time police say a man snatched a headband from the victim's head and short struggle took place. A female offender then approached another victim and made demands for her handbag before punching her to the face, police allege. Police have identified and spoken to the female offender, however, are still hoping to identify the other people involved. Police have released CCTV still images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www. crimestoppersvic.com.au and quote incident number 19010072.

OBRIEN HOPS ON BOARD THIS EASTER BERWICK'S OBrien Real Estate is proudly hopping on board as the major sponsor of the Berwick Business Group's annual Easter Egg Hunt. The estate team will be bringing a range of activities to their Easter marquee including a sausage sizzle, the announcement of the Easter hunt colouring-in competition winner and the chance win a range of prizes by guessing how many Easter eggs are in a jar. And as Obrien Real Estate Sales Associate Candice Hill explained, any profits made from the OBrien marquee will be put straight back into the community via the OBrien Foundation.

"The foundation is about helping and giving back to the local communities that we love and are a part of," Mrs Hill said. "Any money raised will go to people and charities locally based. We want to make sure that we're helping people in need within the Berwick area. "We'll have application forms available on the day if anybody has a charity or group that would like to be considered for funding." Also available throughout the day will be breakfast and story time with the Easter Bunny, a photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny and of course the annual Easter Egg Hunt. The day's activities are suitable for children ages one year to 10 years of age.

Berwick's OBrien Real Estate team. The OBrien Real Estate Berwick Easter Egg Hunt will take place on Saturday 13 April from 9.30am to 3pm. The event will be

Welsh choir takes over Bunjil

Black Box is a new drama series for Bunjil Place - a dedicated space to showcase thoughtprovoking and compelling performance.

Get hooked on drama A series of dramatic, thought-provoking and compelling performances will captivate and move audiences at Bunjil Place with Black Box. The inaugural series features four powerful autobiographical stories told through spoken word, music, movement and dance. Journey into the world of the performer as they each share their unique and provocative story of resilience. My Urrwai - Thursday 4 April, 7.30pm

·

The Melbourne Welsh Male Choir is delighted to announce its fifth concert with the Frankton Ladies Choir - and both choirs first-ever performance at Bunjil Place. The concert kicks off at 3pm, Saturday 14 April. Melbourne Welsh Male Choir Secretary Kevin Seerup, said that the 50-strong choir had been inspired by the magnificent theatre at the award-winning Bunjil Place precinct which opened in late 2017. "The architecture is world-class and the acoustics outstanding," he said. "This venue also presented us with the perfect opportunity to join forces again with the 40-strong Frankston Ladies Choir whose sound blends beautifully with ours. "Together, our harmonies create a compelling, joyous tour de force which audiences love. We want our songs to soar with Bunjil."

Mr Seerup said that the title of the event, "The World in Union", takes its name from the Rugby anthem but it also embodies a broader meaning. "The World in Union signifies our commitment to featuring songs from all over the world," Mr Seerup said. "Music has a unique ability to bring people together whatever their nationality, ethnicity, race or politics. "As someone who was born in New Zealand, the recent terrible events in Christchurch have made me only too aware of the urgent need for the world to be in union." The program includes some Melbourne Welsh favourites, Zenzenina, the South African anti?apartheid folk song, An American Trilogy, the 1972 medley of 19th-century songs popularised by Elvis Presley, a Gershwin medley, some Australian songs and more.

· Swansong - Wednesday 22 May on the Dance Floor - Wednesday 21 · Blood August, 7.30pm Kutcha Edwards Hour - Wednesday 30 · The October, 7.30pm. All performances are held in the Bunjil Place Studio and are followed by Q & A sessions. Grab a series ticket to all four performances in the Black Box Drama Series for only $100.

Axis Performance Director of Human Movement Rod Blackbourn and his team understand that while every goal, body and skill set is different, their objective is always the same “how can we help athletes perform better?” “We aim to obtain the greatest enhancements in performance and athletic development by encompassing strength, speed, agility, power, stability, injury prevention and flexibility in conjunction with load monitoring, intensity and frequency,” Mr Blackbourn said. Axis Performance offers a range of performance and recovery services previously only available to elite athletes. Most people suffer foot and leg pain at some point in their lives. Dr Paul Dowie, one of Australia's leading foot and leg pain experts, musculoskeletal podiatrist and founder of Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, recently shed some light on common foot and leg concerns. "Many foot and leg conditions are misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so it's important to find an experienced musculoskeletal or sports podiatrist to assist these," he said. "Bad foot posture can continually pull your body out of alignment, which can place undue stress on joints and tissues throughout the body, contributing to aches, pains and injuries." Dr Dowie explained that problems with the feet can be very telling. "Early symptoms for diabetes, arthritis, nerve and circulatory problems often show themselves initially in the feet," he said. GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Onshore support rewards By Narelle Coulter Most Friday afternoons just before happy hour kicks off, the staff at Narre Warren based VentraIP leave their computers and gather around the Wheel of Rewards. One lucky employee, singled out for going above and beyond, gets to step up and spin the colourful wheel cheered on by their colleagues. The wheel can dial up prizes ranging from a holiday, to a new smart phone, to cash and even a new car. It can also land on the booby prize. “We needed a way to reward team members on a consistent basis for going above and beyond, “explained VentraIP CEO Angelo Giuffrida. “The reward wheel was born out of staff feedback and has evolved over time. Everyone is involved and there is a really encouraging, positive vibe. “Most people spin the wheel rather than take a guaranteed envelope of cash because it’s fun.“ The Wheel of Rewards is just one innovative way Angelo and his business partner Cheyne Jonstone keep their staff of 49 happy and engaged. As a group, VentraIP is the largest privately owned web host and domain name registrar in Australia. “Essentially we operate three brands - VentraIP Australia, Zuver and Synergy Wholesale. Each brand focuses on a specific segment of the market, but all of them operate within the online services space, “explained Angelo. VentraIP started 10 years ago in Cheyne’s Officer home. “I can’t stand the phrase bedroom to boardroom, it is so clichéd, but it really is akin to our story, it’s what we came from, “ Angelo explained. Initially the business comprised just Cheyne and Angelo, but as it expanded working from Cheyne’s house became unworkable. “It got to the point where there were three of us in the office which was all it was built for. When another staff member came in for meetings on a Friday he would have to work at the side of my desk, I’d have to climb over him to get out of the office to get a drink. “We hired a developer and he was in the kitchen.“ Angelo and Cheyne moved their business into office space in Verdun Drive and then to its current 1500 square metre secure office in the Casey Business Park. “We wanted to stay in the South East and we were fortunate that there was a Telstra fibre connection straight back to our data centre in Port Melbourne, which is where our servers are, in the building. That enabled us to have the speeds and connectivity to run our business in this area.“ The landlord has allowed Angelo and Cheyne to grow and customise the space. When Grow visited builders were converting a recreation area into a fully equipped gymnasium.

VentraIP CEO Angelo Giuffrida.

Staff also have access to an on-site cafe and bar, hair salon, games room, nap room, child’s swing set and a New York style phone booth for private phone calls. A chef serves staff lunch and a barista is on hand for coffee orders. “We’ve got away with a lot of crazy things in this office, which fosters our core values and beliefs which is to be transparent and open and it’s how we still operate today, “said Angelo. All VentraIP’s staff are Australian based, a fact that sets the company apart in the competitive tech space. Initially VentraIP’s support team was based in India, with Australian based staff dealing with escalated cases. “The market shifted and we identified a gap in market in terms of service delivery, which is virtually non-existent in the online services and web hosting space. As providers all moved slowly to offshoring, we made the tough decision to say ’you know what? It’s not working for us’. “Our customer retention is high because our products are good but we needed to improve so we made the decision to bring everything back in-house.“ Angelo said they considered a telecommuting model that would have let them hire staff from anywhere in Australia, but in the end decided to hire almost exclusively from the South East suburbs. “We had already fostered a relaxing environment where we provided lunch for staff and you can’t replicate that for people who were remote.“ He said the South East location had proved no barrier to recruiting highly skilled staff. VentraIP has customers in New Zealand

and the firm unsuccessfully attempted an expansion into the US. “We still service a large number of clients in New Zealand, but we are primarily focused on Australia. This sings true to where we are now as a company as Australia backed, Australian based, 100 per cent Australian. “I’m comfortable, I love what we’re doing. I’d rather be known for having an awesome product in Australia than having a mediocre product in Australia and a mediocre product in another market.“ In the office foyer stands a huge stuffed dinosaur. Smaller toy ’Venturasaurus’ are scattered around the office. “It’s not our mascot because dinosaurs are extinct, out dated and slow, which is not our business, but they’re cute and everyone loves them,“ said Angelo, laughing. The colourful toys, the well-stocked drinks fridges and the wide screen TVs scattered throughout the office are all testament to the time, energy and money Angelo and Cheyne spend on fostering a great workplace culture. “You can have great culture in an office that doesn’t have a swing or a gym. It’s about the environment from above, it’s got to come from above and it’s got to be truly believed by the people in charge and also shown,“ Angelo said. “It’s not a set and forget, you’ve got to constantly evolve. You’ve got to allow a lot of organic growth, and organic comradery. When you get to the point where you have team members (who are not rostered on) coming in on a Friday to spend time with friends or have couple of drinks or ask to play Dungeon and Dragons in the boardroom, that’s when you know you have organically fostered a good culture.“ Over the next five years, Angelo expects each of the businesses to continue to grow of-

Ventrasaurus toys populate the firm's Narre Warren office. 190637 fering “a high quality service and high quality product backed by incredible service“. He believes large providers like Go Daddy will eventually wake up to the idea of local support and the Australian market will continue to consolidate. “For the time being our goal is to offer the best quality support and products in the market. How that will look in five years, hopefully in a continued vein, but it really depends on how the market evolves. We can literally forecast 12 months ahead, maybe 16 months for product development, but beyond that we have no idea what is going to pop up in the market. “I am most proud of the fact that we’ve been able to evolve and change over 10 years and I’m most proud of the team we’ve fostered and the environment we’ve fostered. “I don’t feel like I’ve worked a day in my life and the only people I can thank for that are my team.“

Berwick and Narre Warren will face off in the inaugural AFL Outer East match this Saturday, a competition that has been a year in the making. 184742

The time for talk is over! By Nick Creely Now is the time for all of the speculation, chatter and nervous energy to dissipate - AFL Outer East is finally here on Saturday. The inaugural, standalone match between Berwick and Narre Warren will draw a monster crowd this weekend, potentially bigger than that of the final SEFNL grand final between the two clubs, and while it won’t answer any of the lingering questions surrounding how the competition will unfold, it’s almost the perfect lead in to what is sure to be a season awash with twists and turns, and new rivalries evolving as the slog of the season drags on. The famous colours of both Berwick and Narre Warren are synomous with the southeast region, they represent just what it means to be successful in local football. It’s almost been like time has moved slower since the AFL Outer East commission officially granted the applications for six SEFNL clubs (Beaconsfield, Berwick, Doveton, Narre Warren, Officer and Pakenham) to transfer on a blustery night at the Upwey Tecoma Football Club rooms on Thursday 2 August 2018. With all of the politics surrounding the future of Cranbourne, and the exact make-up of the divisions and structures going forward, it’s seemed like football and netball - the true essence of what this is all about for the local community - had been largely forgotten in the scheme of things, but not anymore. The excitement, anticipation of what divisional football means for the south-east football clubs cannot be understated. For Berwick, Beaconsfield, Cranbourne, Doveton, Narre Warren, Officer and Pakenham, their future - which once looked bleak and uncertain - is now secure, and with it will come some seriously competitive football against some new and existing rivals, with new players to contend with, and new grounds and conditions. It’s a win-win for all. While Yarra Valley clubs Healesville, Olinda Ferny Creek, Upwey Tecoma, Wandin and Woori Yallock - as well as south-east clubs Beaconsfield and Cranbourne - will be desperate to make an almighty statement and get off their season with a bang, the Wickers' and Magpies’ blockbuster clash at Edwin Flack Reserve this weekend is mouth-watering from whatever angle it’s looked at. Matt Shinners’ group was the dominate home-and-away side in the final season of the berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

SEFNL, but as the Wickers, then coached by Stewart Kemperman proved, premierships are won in September, and their build to a dominant grand final victory against the Magpies was simply something to marvel at. Only days after the Wickers secured the final premiership of the SEFNL, Kemperman departed the club, replaced by his predeces-

sor Rhys Nisbet, who coached the club to glory in 2015, in a smooth transition that was described as a “transition” that was inevitable. One thing is for certain about both clubs as they prepare to face off with one another for yet another season in just a few days’ time - they’ll be up to their eyeballs in the fight for premiership glory again, and their clash will

be just the appetiser needed for a main course which might take a while to cook up, but will be worth every spoonful. At Edwin Flack Reserve, at 2.10pm on Saturday, a new era of local football - one that has been a year in the making - will begin, and once the ball is slammed into the turf to begin the season, the talk will officially be over. Lemons sours Hume The Casey Cavaliers continued on their winning ways in Round 3 of the Big V basketball season. The Championship men claimed a win over Hume City, 112-96, as Raheem Lemons (29 points, 14 rebounds and 3 assists) again proved he is one of the best players in the league. Lemons has started season 2019 on a tear, with averages of 26 points and 12 rebounds on an incredibly efficient 69 per cent shooting from the field. While Lemons again starred on the weekend, Brandon Polk (28 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists) and Michael McInnes (15 points and 7 assists) were also fantastic in the impressive win that sees Casey improve to 3-1 on the season to sit third on the ladder. The Championship women continue to enjoy life in the highest division, taking care of Whittlesea in emphatic fashion at home on Sunday afternoon, 100-67. In a complete team effort, the load was shared as players put up tremendous numbers across the board. Sarah Halejian (27 points (5/9 3FG), 9 assists, 8 rebounds and 4 steals) posted an outrageous stat-line as she dominated on both ends of the court, while Rachel Winters (20 points and 6 assists), Megan Craig (17 points and 11 rebounds) and Jaimie-Lee Jeffs (10 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and 4 blocks) did it all. The Cavs remain undefeated, 3-0, and sit second on the ladder. The Youth League 1 women completed an

obliteration of Eltham at home on Sunday. Lauren Tuplin (24 points, 8 rebounds and 7 steals) was a force on both ends of the court in a typical hard-nosed display, while Peta Rhodes (16 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals) and Grace Watson (14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals) were involved in everything. Casey sits third on the ladder with a 2-1 record. The Youth League 2 men claimed a home win against Hume City on Saturday night, 9382. Casey's ball movement was far superior to their opponents as they out-assisted Hume 2613 in a fine offensive display. Blake Taylor (26 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists) led the way for the Cavs as five players scored in double figures. The Cavs sit on top of the ladder with a 4-0 record. It will be an action-packed fourth round of Big V this weekend at Casey Stadium, with all teams taking to the hardwood. A Youth League 1 and Championship women double-header tips off at Casey Stadium on Saturday night from 6pm. The Youth League 1 women then travel to Warrandyte on Sunday to take on the Venom. Meanwhile, a Youth League 1 and Championship men double-header tips off on Sunday from 1:30pm at Casey Stadium.

Powerhouse club Mordialloc has departed the DDCA. 178833

Bloodhounds depart DDCA By Nick Creely

12412352-SN15-19

By Hayley Wildes

Local cricket powerhouse Mordialloc will officially depart the Dandenong District Cricket Association next season, with the Bloodhounds switching to the Cricket Southern Bayside competition. The Bloodhounds - one of four clubs in the Kingston area that have played in the DDCA - have been a powerhouse of the competition for several years after initially joining the association, winning first XI premierships in 2008/09, 2014/15, 2016/17 and 2017/18, before only narrowly finishing outside of the top four in Turf 1. The departure of the club is set to impact on the association even further than their strong impact on the field, with the potential for a domino effect to unfold. St Brigid’s/St Louis - who won the DDCA

Twenty20 cup - are another club potentially on the verge of a move to Southern Bayside, with the club also geographically located in Kingston City, while Dingley may be another to have a look at their options after rumours started swirling last season. The departure of the Bloodhounds will fuel talk about the Turf 1 promotion and relegation, with St Mary’s currently the side to go down into Turf 2, while Narre South are set to be the one promoted. However, with another club departing the Turf 1 grade, as it currently stands, there would be an uneven amount of teams, and therefore a bye would be created for each side, which isn’t a realistic option. Both Narre South and Turf 2 runners-up Narre North could both be promoted into the DDCA top grade, with St Mary’s to be relegated, evening up the two top grades. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Demons are set to light it right up By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons fell agonisingly short of VFL glory last season and will be looking to go one step further in 2019. In Jade Rawlings' first season at the helm, Casey finished the home and away season second on the ladder with a game style based around a defensive mindset that withstood all sorts of challenges. Unfortunately, on the biggest day of the season, the Demons dished up a second half to forget and lost the grand final to Box Hill by 10 points, 10.12 (72) to 8.14 (62). Despite the heartbreaking end, it was a positive season for Casey, who notched up an equal-league best 14 home and away season wins and a further two wins in the finals. As with many VFL clubs, the winds of change came through over the offseason and Casey has added some exciting youngsters to their ranks, while their top-three 2018 best and fairest finishers have all moved on, but two may still figure prominently this season. Corey Wagner and Jay Lockhart were one and two in the best and fairest and duly rewarded with positions on Melbourne's AFL list. With a strong list and plenty of competition for spots in Melbourne's line-up weekto-week, Wagner and Lockhart will most likely play VFL games throughout the season.

Third in Casey's 2018 best and fairest was Cameron Pedersen, who starred for the Demons in a utility role. He has signed on with Phillip Island in the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition for season 2019 and looks set to dominate that league. Furthermore, the likes of Dean Kent and Dom Tyson - who were Melbourne-listed last season and played many games for Casey have found new homes at St Kilda and North Melbourne, respectively. While those players will be missed, exciting former TAC Cup (now NAB League) stars have signed on with Casey. Former Dandenong Stingrays' Matthew Gahan, Jai Taylor and Heath Briggs proved themselves at TAC Cup level, with Gahan playing a vital role off half back and Taylor starring in the middle and up forward in the Rays' 2018 premiership run. As with any AFL-affiliated VFL club, Casey will most likely see many changes throughout the season and the make-up of the team each week will depend heavily on what is happening with Melbourne in the AFL. Casey's season gets underway on Sunday at Box Hill City Oval in a grand final re-match. The match kicks off at 11:40am and the Demons will certainly be out for revenge. There's no doubt that Casey boasts a strong list and with another preseason to learn and practice Rawlings' game style, they look set for another strong season.

Jack Hutchins will once again figure prominently for Casey this VFL season. 182158 Picture: ROB CAREW

Rays take their chances, turn the Power off on Gippy By Hayley Wildes

12415391-RC15-19

The Gazette's two local NAB League teams battled it out for the first time in season 2019 and it was yet another classic instalment between the old rivals. After both teams claimed nail-biting wins in the opening round of the season, neither side took a backwards step in wintry conditions at Morwell on Saturday as they searched to begin their campaigns with two wins on the trot. Despite the Stingrays kicking the first major of the game, the Power dominated much of the first quarter. Boasting a two-goal to one lead late in the quarter, Gippsland made some costly mistakes to see Dandenong enter the first break with a six-point lead, 3.3 (21) to 2.3 (15). The Power bounced back quickly in the opening stages of the second quarter as Will Papley slammed on two quick majors. While the Rays responded with a goal of their own, the Power continued to dominate play. But as the Stingrays so often do, they stayed in the contest with hard-fought defence, forcing Gippsland into tough shots on goal. Because of this, at the main break, Gippsland led by just three points, 5.7 (37) to 5.4 (34). The likes of Sam Flanders and Tye Hourigan impressed for Gippsland, while Cody Weightman and Jack Toner led the way for Dandenong. The Stingrays came out roaring after halftime, taking the lead courtesy of two early goals, and would go onto kick three goals to two in the crucial third term. Despite still

dominating much of the play, the Power was unable to take control of the game, making errors at vital moments to give the Stingrays life. With a quarter to play, Dandenong held a slender four-point lead, 8.7 (55) to 7.9 (51). The fourth quarter was a titanic tussle between two sides desperate for a win. Despite both sides kicking two goals each in the final frame, it was Dandenong which landed the final blow with a late goal to take the lead and come away with a rousing six-point road win, 10.11 (71) to 9.11 (65). It was a tale of missed opportunities for Gippsland, who failed to make the most of their dominant patches throughout the game, while Dandenong's ability to stay in the contest when the Power was pushing hard was impressive and speaks volumes of the side's will to win. Cody Weightman and Jai Nanscawen (two goals each) were impressive up forward for the Stingrays, while Jack Toner, Nathan Heath, Mitch Riordan and Hayden Young did plenty of heavy lifting. Sam Flanders, Brock Smith and Caleb Serong starred in the midfield for Gippsland, while backman Tye Hourigan was a rock in defence and Will Papley (three goals) and Harvey Neocleous (two goals) were dangerous up forward. Round 3 will see both teams travel to Bendigo on Sunday in a country double-header, with Gippsland taking on Bendigo and Dandenong facing Geelong.

South East sets its sights By AFL South East Media Natural instincts are so important in football and new South Eastern Women's Football (SEWF) interleague coach Gary Sanford gave a glimpse of his own characteristics ahead of the first training session at Casey Fields last Wednesday night. Ask Sanford about the prospect of moulding a 65-strong squad into a cohesive unit against the Southern Football Netball League on Sunday 19 May - and his face lights up. It's his natural instinct - to be proud, passionate and excited about the challenge ahead as he looks to build on SEWF's one-point victory over the Northern Football League in the inaugural interleague clash last year. "It's fantastic to be a part of and something I've really been looking forward to, working with female footballers again who aspire to play at the highest level available to them," Sanford said. "And for me, it's all about pride and passion. It won't be the best 25 players that represent this league, it will be the players that give their all at training and show the coaching staff that they want to wear that jumper with pride." The just-turned 60-year-old has an impressive football resume having coached the Frankston Reserves to a VFA premiership in 1989. He took a long break from coaching as his four daughters grew up around him before his nephews pestered him into coaching the

Red Hill juniors in 2001. After another long hiatus, he began coaching female football with his daughter Vicki making the Victorian School Sports team despite having no local club to call home. He rectified that situation and led the Mornington Football Club to a premiership in the South East Division of the Victorian Women's Football League in 2016. "I've coached boys and men before, but female footballers just have this passion to learn and they absorb things very easily," Sanford said, before explaining the exciting nature of the interleague program. "We have players from all three divisions of the league who are keen to prove that they belong at this level. It's exciting that a player like Zoe Mitchell from Hastings, who has won league best and fairest awards in division three, has the opportunity to showcase her skills. "And it's not just Zoe, I'm sure there will be players that emerge that will go on to play at VFL level and even higher. That's one of the most exciting aspects of coaching interleague football, discovering just how strong the depth is in our league and showcasing that on the day." Sanford has a very strong support staff, with Eastern Devils premiership coach - and last year's interleague mentor - Megan Snart by his side, joined by well-respected coaches in Kris Smith and Jason Mitchell.

On the Wright track CRANBOURNE BOWLS The mother and son combination of Cheryl and Gavin Wright have been crowned Cranbourne Mixed Pairs champions, defeating the husband and wife combination of John and Coral McKenna. The Wright pairing started well in the contest, picking up an early lead from the first end and never looked back from there. This ended a good season for Gavin, who played all year in the number one Cranbourne side and also for Cheryl, who played in the grand final side of the ladies' number one side. Congratulations to both teams on making the final. Gavin is now looking forward to more fishing in the off-season, while Cheryl is looking forward to a well-deserved rest after organising the catering for the club throughout the bowling season. With the main pennant competition now completed, Cranbourne can now look forward to next season starting in October. Meanwhile, social bowls continues on Wednesday mornings and barefoot bowls on Friday evenings. For inquiries, please phone the club on 5996 1272 or call into the club on the above days at 5 Grant Street, Cranbourne.

There were 81 Berwick Little Athletics athletes that qualified through the Gippsland region track and field carnival held over 1617 February to represent the club at the State Track and Field Championships. Berwick Little Athletics Centre had its best ever team result to finish second, just behind the largest little athletics centre in the state; Geelong.
