WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT
EMAIL LEAK DRIPS FUEL ON CLUB ROW BY MARGARET MACCOLL The battle for Peregian Surf Club deepened this week following the release of a leaked email sent last November from Peregian Beach Community Association (PBCA) president Barry Cotterell to Noosa Council officers and Councillors. The email advised of the incorporation of Ocean Life Saving Foundation (OLSF) with Barry as vice president and Sharyn Kerrigan president and registered its interest in using the surf club's top floor. The Foundation the email says aims to "promote and engage in activities which preserve life in and the health of the ocean and coastal environs". Peregian Family and Friends Association (PFaFA) which has assisted Noosa Heads
SLSC to run the new Peregian Beach Nippers Program viewed Council's call last month for Expressions of Interest to use the upper level of the clubhouse as a move that favoured OLSF which they "believe is a front group of PBCA". "Many people in the community are bewildered by the sudden and radical departure from what the Council position was last year when on 5 September Mayor Tony Wellington agreed to sign a long term lease with SLSQ to run the Peregian Surf Club," PFaFA president Kane Livingstone said. PFaFA secretary Leigh McCready said negotiations between Council and SLSQ that had continued after 5 September stopped abruptly in November. In a PBCA Facebook post to members
Barry Cotterell described PFaFA as a "Peregian Springs lobby group" and likened the "issue surrounding the surf club" to one of the "many battles against vested interests and developers hostile to our community's village scale and welfare" it had engaged in over 20 years. Barry rejected the implication OLSA or PBCA was being favoured but the post confirmed they were lobbying for OLSA. "Members of the PBCA Executive have taken supporting roles in organisations that reflect our values in order to assist them with their establishment," he said. "We did this for the Community House and now for the Ocean Life Saving Association." Barry posted on Facebook that PBCA supported the use of the surf club's lower level for volunteer lifesavers and
Nippers. However the leaked email says "the Foundation even has a substitute for Nippers called a Junior Ocean Awareness Program". Leigh said PFaFA would not be submitting an EOI because it believed both "the EOI has been set up specifically to award the top floor to the PBCA led Ocean Life Saving Foundation" and SLSQ advice indicated "the entire building and a long term lease (was needed) to operate and build towards an affiliated, sustainable, independent club in Peregian". A SLSQ spokeswoman said SLSQ were "yet to sight and consider the terms of the EOI so have not yet been able to make a decision whether to submit an application". ●

On Tuesday evening representatives from Noosa Heads, Sunshine Beach and Coolum Supporter Clubs were amongst the 2000 plus guests who attended the Annual Clubs Queensland Awards of Excellence 2019 Dinner. "In her words of welcome Sue van der Merwe, Managing Director of Lotteries & Keno said, "Tonight is all about recognising and applauding the efforts and achievements of the incredible people who work so hard to operate these clubs." How very true. Without the dedication and loyalty of managers and staff of our Surf Life Saving Supporter Clubs they would not be the success they are today; and our financial situation would indeed be very grave. Above all the ability of our staff to make both members and visitors feel welcome and cared for is something in which our people excel. From our end of the Sunshine Coast it was a big well done to three clubs; Coolum, Sunshine and Noosa Heads. Coolum was named winners of the Best Gaming Venue Small Clubs category, public acknowledgement of Sunshine's place in the Hall of Fame (being named Sunshine Coast Best Supporter Club three years in a row) and for Noosa for the second consecutive year, Best Club Sunshine Coast. This was an outstanding achievement; to win again next year, (three in a row) will put them into the Clubs Queensland Hall of Fame. Chairman of the Noosa Board of Directors Ian Young OAM said, "This has
Stuart Cooper and he hails from Cornwell in England. Coming to Australia with wife Mary and three children they were looking for a nice place situated about an hour or two from a major city; which to their idea was Brisbane. "First we looked at Maroochydore then Coolum but decided that Noosa was it; in some ways it reminded us of home. Soon as we settled we joined the surf club and with the kids in the Nippers I joined the senior ranks and at Christmas 2018 aged 42 I obtained my bronze: and immediately got involved in the boat section." However for Stuart this was really nothing new for during his life in England he became a member of the Portreath Surf Life Saving Club. "Our system is totally different to yours. To join we had to do a test swim and then demonstrate boat competence: at our beach we had good surf not quite as big as yours. Our beach faces north and the only real drawback is the water temperature which is usually 13/14 degrees. However in the middle of summer it can touch19. It was a good club and recently we celebrated our 70th year; and the boating fraternity has really become international. In England we had a visit from a French crew and this year I am hoping to meet the crew again at the Australian Championships; what could be more international, a Pommie competing for an Aussie club against a crew from France." This week both Noosa and Sunshine will travel to the Gold Coast to contest the Australian titles; we wish them well. ●

NOOSA TODAY 5
COVER STORY No more plastic on Noosa Today, much to the delight of Tourism Noosa CEO Steve McPharlin, and Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington.
BREAK
PLASTIC FREE NOOSA TODAY BY MARGARET MACCOLL oosa Today is going plastic free. We have listened to our readers and joined the growing tide of businesses and organisations in Noosa who have committed to reducing pollution in our waterways, our ocean and on our land. We have aligned ourselves in our plastic-free decision with Noosa Council, Tourism Noosa, the Boomerang Alliance pilot program Plastic Free Noosa, Surfrider Foundation and about 160 Noosa businesses and organisations that have committed to reducing their plastic use in a list that is growing weekly. From next week Noosa Today will be moving away from distributing our newspaper in a plastic bag. A significant focus will be digital delivery of Noosa Today. We will be encouraging residents to sign up to Noosa Today’s digital

edition so it is delivered weekly to email inboxes. In addition Noosa Today will increase its efforts to drive traffic through organic and social searches. The popular newsmagazine already has a strong digital and social following. In addition to online access Noosa Today will be delivered to numerous strategic high traffic locations across the Noosa Shire as well as being delivered directly to most main street businesses and industrial areas. “Delivery at commercial areas for pick up has been a successful delivery method of newsmedia since newspapers were invented," managing director of Star News Group (the parent group of Noosa Today) Paul Thomas said. “Metros and regional paid papers are primarily delivered to commercial locations for pick up by readers. We have successful free delivery to commercial locations in other markets and there are many other newspapers in Queensland currently delivered to readers this way."
Thursday, 4 April, 2019
This delivery method also overcomes the issue we have on a regular basis with papers getting wet when it rains. “Last year we had significant wet days on delivery days and constantly received complaints from advertisers about wet papers," he said. Mr Thomas said that, along with the change in distribution strategy, the new Noosa Today would adopt a stronger news focus, campaigning on issues important to readers and with a greater platform for debate. “People want a media that offers informed debate, balance on issues, a publication that gives them a voice and stands up for their community on issues; campaigning on important changes or issues that improve the Noosa region,” Mr Thomas said. “Noosa Today will be doing that.” Noosa Today is an independently owned family business with no political agendas. It will continue to strive to set the news agenda, make the decision-makers accountable
and shine a light the achievements, triumphs and concerns of the community. In Noosa the pressure to remove plastic bags from our distribution has been gaining more and more momentum as has removing plastic from all aspects of our lives. In 2017 a consortium of 47 environment groups nationwide chose Noosa as the pilot area in Queensland to test plastic-free living through a campaign by environmental group the Boomerang Alliance. “The Noosa community generally has decided to remove plastic from their lives,“ Mr Thomas said. “We receive weekly phone calls, emails and letters from residents about the plastic bag delivery and their concerns for the environment. “Biodegradable bags are not an option. These bags still take a long time to decompose and can still do significant damage in the meantime down drains, in waterways and in the ocean amongst other things.“ noosatoday.com.au
Noosa Today Advertising Sales Manager Phill Le Petit views the paper on Iphone or Ipad. Changing our delivery method is a huge step for a community newspaper but we believe this is what the Noosa community demands and we have already received community backing. Tourism Noosa CEO Steve McPharlin: “Congratulations to the team at Noosa Today for their leadership in seeking opportunities to reduce their environmental impact. This is another great example of one of our community partners taking their environmental responsibility seriously and looking at alternative ways to operate in sustainable ways. Tourism Noosa is optimistic that other businesses will continue to strive to reduce their impact and follow the positive example set by the Team at Noosa Today.“ Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie: “I applaud Noosa Today’s leadership and community spirit by taking the initiative to reduce their impact on the environment. Nearly 90 per cent of debris in our oceans is plastic, so this measure is a significant step forward and a tangible example of how a local business can recognize the farreaching impact plastic has on marine life and ecosystems. Super effort.” Plastic Free Noosa coordinator Chad Buxton: “This is extremely exciting news and a huge result for Noosa Today. Through this action and changes to their distribution, they will be saving 600,000 plastic bags annually from being used. Single-use bags on papers distributed to houses is the single largest complaint we receive from the community. For those noosatoday.com.au
trying to reduce their impact, getting these papers wrapped on their doorstep made them feel powerless with no clear way to opt-out. Plastic Free Noosa always advocates reducing our impact over disposable; and Noosa Today has done just that. They have simply eliminated a single use item they felt they no longer needed and have listened to community concerns. Chad described the action by Noosa Today together with other locals, tourists and businesses as both “exciting“ and inspiring, showing what we can do when we work together. “We hope that more newspaper groups follow their lead nationally and internationally on this important issue,” he said. “We are excited to see Noosa Today embrace these changes to a more modern and reduced impact distribution model that will make a huge impact. We are sure it will be noticed and appreciated by the community.” The alarming findings of scientific studies reveal the effects on the environment and wildlife of the burden of plastic pollution which has also fuelled our decision to change our mode of delivery. A recent study by CSIRO surveyed rubbish at 100km intervals around the Australian coastline and found threequarters of it was plastic, as was most floating debris. The study found the density of plastic ranges from a few thousand pieces of plastic per square kilometre to more than 40,000 pieces of
plastic per square kilometre. Globally about one third of marine turtles and nearly half of seabird species have likely ingested debris, the study found. CSIRO predicts plastic ingestion by seabirds may reach 95 per cent by 2050. Working together the Noosa community is already making an enormous dent in its use of plastic. The latest figures released by Plastic Free Noosa reveal that at the end of March the amount of plastic saved is 2.7 million pieces. That’s the number of pieces of plastic that would have been used by businesses and organisations had they not decided to switch away from plastic. And only last month Tourism Noosa announced their partnership with Plastic Free Noosa in order to boost efforts to help local restaurants, cafes, markets and events switch away from single-use plastic products as part of its increasing focus on elevating sustainability as a priority within the tourism industry in Noosa. Tourism Noosa’s Environment and Sustainability manager Juanita Bloomfield hopes the combined efforts of the plastic free initiative will help close the gap in Noosa between almost 80 per cent of Australian tourists who say they want to travel sustainably and less than 50 per cent who manage to do it. LIBRARY SPACE BOOSTS TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGY A range of digital tools and technologies provided at the Noosa and Cooroy Library Makerspaces has become an integral part of the Sunshine Butterflies' ongoing program and is boosting the confidence of its members. The disability service providers team leader Bec Johnson said they started off taking one member there, and noticed it got his confidence up, and now they have 10 members going. "It's amazing how much they have grown and how much they have learnt, like problem solving on their own; they don't need as much guidance. It brings them confidence and it builds character," she said. As well as sewing machines and photographic equipment, both Cooroy and Noosa Makerspaces host emerging technologies such as 3D printers, virtual reality systems and robotic technologies. Bec said the space enabled their members to interact with the community and learn in a safe environment. "We've got members who are creating 3D products here and it's really empowering for them," she said. They are picking up important skills and if it wasn't for the Makerspaces we wouldn't have access to the hardware, 3d printers and computers." Libraries and Galleries manager Tracey King said it was rewarding to see the team from Sunshine Butterflies come in each

Noosa’s Queensland Fire and Emergency officers were called to the Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort in Hastings Street about 8pm Sunday night after a lift carrying a male staff member “let go“ dropping a six floors to the basement and refusing to open. Noosa station officer John Lewis said the emergency brakes kicked in to stop the lift before it hit the bottom. “It’s not like Diehard,“ he said. “The emergency brakes activated but you don’t know when it’s going to be stopped.“ The firefighters prised the lift door open in order to speak to the man and provide fresh air. Officer Lewis said the man was calm and lucid but had there been an emergency they would have used the spreaders to wrench open the doors. The staff member was trapped inside for about 45 minutes until a technician arrived and used his emergency key to open the door. Officer Lewis said care was taken in case the man had suffered spinal injuries. He was moved onto a waiting Queensland Ambulance Service stretcher and taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital as a precautionary measure. A hotel spokesperson said on Monday the team member had been released from hospital. “The safety of our guests and employees is paramount and the lift in question is currently out of service,“ the spokesperson said. ●

LOST TREASURE IS FOUND BY MARGARET MACCOLL Luck, some creative googling and an act of kindness has reunited a family with a precious gift lost 10 years earlier. A keen metal detectorist Marc Richardson was out at Munna Park Noosaville with his partner and her daughters celebrating a combined birthday party when he decided to let the children try out the metal detector. "I got some small change and buried it in the children's play park," he said. "Then I showed the kids how to use the equipment and watched how much fun they were having. When we had all finished i went for a look around the park and ended up finding a gold pendant with what looked like a horse and something written in Latin below." Marc posted his find on Metal Detecting Australia Facebook site seeking further information on the pendant and was amazed at the response."I found out the translation "A Sound And Vigorous Mind Is The Highest Possession" and the family name," he said. "So then I googled the family name and it came back as an English family who had moved out here around 2004. They happened to live 100m away from where I found it." Jim and Tracy Blayney, owners of Wolngarin Holiday Resort, had lost the pendant in March 10 years earlier when they'd wandered over to the park to take some family photos.
Marc Richardson with Tracy and Jim Blayney and the lost pendant. Twelve months earlier Jim's father had gifted a pair of cufflinks, which had belonged to Jim's grandfather, to his wife Tracy and she'd had both cufflinks made into a pendant. They noticed the chain had broken on the day the pendant went missing and had employed a metal detectorist to find it but to no avail. "It was really precious to us," Jim said. "We were devastated." They could hardly believe it when Marc knocked on their door last week to return
the lost treasure. They looked back at photos taken 10 years earlier and noticed one, which showed the broken chain being worn by one of their children, was in the exact spot that the pendant was found. "It was quite and emotional day," Jim said. Jim praised Marc for going to the effort to seek them out. And they now plan to get a new chain for the pendant. Last Sunday was Neighbour Day. If you have any good neighbour stories let us know at newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au ●
The Steam Bun Co, Hinterland Restaurant Cooran, CootharaBAR, Habitat Noosa, Dhom's Kitchen, Amrita Park Meadery and Makepeace Island last week joined more than 60 local farmers, chefs, restaurants and schools on the list of Snail of Approval recipients. The 'Snail of Approval' is a recognition program for food producers, artisans, retail outlets, restaurants and cafes who demonstrate a philosophy of adopting earth friendly practices. These might include reduction in the use of chemicals, use of local and low food mile ingredients, preserving vanishing animal breeds and plant varieties, animal friendly practices, support of small producers, striving to create food that is good, clean and fair. Slow Food Noosa President, Carolyn Winkler said the program, run by volunteers, was truly about living and eating as locally and seasonally as you can. "It's great to recognise the people who are taking the time and effort to create or grow good, clean and fair food - and the chefs, restaurants, cafes and food producers who support local, seasonal and ethical food," she said. ●

GREATER CONNECTIONS SET FOR SYDNEY FLYERS
GO NOOSA FOR EASTER HOLIDAYS
The Sunshine Coast Airport this week began a second Qantas direct morning service from Sydney.Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Andrew Brodie said the additional service highlights the strong demand by business travellers, as the Sunshine Coast becomes an increasingly diverse market, with a rapidly growing business sector. "Connectivity is key for regional airports and the new service will not only be able to deliver international visitors to our region more efficiently, it will mean that local residents can fly out of their own airport at a convenient time and connect directly to international flights out of Sydney," he said. "As any Sunshine Coast resident knows, the vast amount of road works on the Bruce Highway has meant that travelling to Brisbane for domestic and international flights is often impacted by significant traffic delays and disruptions. The new direct Qantas services will save both time and worry for Sunshine Coast travellers planning overseas travel. "The most recent National Visitor Survey statistics indicated that domestic business travel to the Sunshine Coast increased by 5.5 per cent in the year to September 2018, while our own annual departing passenger surveys have indicated growth in the percentage of travellers flying for business has increased from 16 per cent in 2017 to 21
The Go Noosa transport initiatives will be revived during the Easter holiday period which begins on Saturday 6 April and will run for three weeks. Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie said with Easter Monday on 22 April and Anzac Day on Thursday 25 April, we expect people will extend their holidays so we'd like the free buses and other initiatives to be available over three weeks. "Almost 204,000 locals and visitors used the free buses over the Christmas holidays, saving approximately 100,000 car trips. This greatly reduced traffic and emissions," he said. A free Go Noosa App will provide information on bus timetables, scooter and bike parking, bike paths, walking tracks plus carparking and traffic levels in the Hastings St precinct. The Noosa Heads Lions Park will again be available for additional parking and traffic controllers will help prioritise buses and pedestrians in Noosa Heads and car parking limits at Noosa Junction will be extended from 3 hours to 6 hours to support the Park and Ride service from this precinct. "This reflects the fact that the Sunshine Coast is now the 10th largest major urban area in Australia and has the second strongest performing economy in Queensland," Mr Brodie said. POLICE IN PITCHED BATTLE BY RON LANE Last week's Queensland Police Force interdistrict Rugby League Carnival proved to be a great success with a total of 10 teams, eight male and two female competing. The 300 people registered for the tournament came from far and wide, with districts such as the Gold Coast, Thursday Island, Mt Isa, Longreach, Brisbane, Central Queensland being represented. It is now 20 years since Noosa last played host to this event and the happy to say the support from local clubs such as the Pirates Rugby League, who proudly hosted the games at Pirate Park and the Noosa Surf Club, which provided premises for the official functions and presentation of trophies, combined to make it a week to remember. Even the inclement weather which hit our district for the Tuesday Wednesday and Friday games could not stop the enthusiasm of both the players and the support groups. What can only be classed as a major step forward for this carnival was the fact that for the first time in its 33-year history two ladies teams were on the competition calendar. With great names such as Mal Meninga, Paul Huff and Peter Jackson, just to name a few, passing through the ranks, it is easy to understand the pride displayed by the players and officials. On Friday with the inclement weather starting to lift both finals for the ladies and the mens were held at Pirate Park. For the

Guest of honor for the event was Queensland's top cop Commissioner Ian Stewart. On Monday evening during welcome drinks at the Noosa Surf Club he welcomed all to Noosa and stressed the importance of events such as this in the life of the Queensland Police. Then on Friday evening at the presentation of trophies the Commissioner acknowledged the great
support of the Pirates Rugby League and the Noosa Surf Club. He then moved a vote of thanks to Inspector Garry Watts President of the Queensland Police Rugby League and his team of workers and acknowledged the massive support of sponsor Freeman Real Estate Kingaroy. Then on behalf of the winning teams Andrew Dunkley received the trophy for Central Queensland (men's) team and Stephany Hancock for Brisbane City ladies. The major individual trophy the Player of the Carnival went to Allan Heldsinger of the Mount Isa Mongrels. Definitely a week to celebrate and remember. ●

Wet weather won't stop Noosa Tigers Australian Football Club any more, with the help of a $192,195 grant to improve drainage at the Club's oval. Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O'Brien said the Noosa Tigers had suffered with their grounds regularly made unplayable by heavy rain, which hampered their ability to train and host matches. "This funding for new drainage will ensure their grounds can be used at all times, which means they can guarantee training and match opportunities and they can expand into hosting large events like state titles," Mr O'Brien said. "There's about 400 players who will directly benefit from being able to train and play whatever the weather brings, and it will also boost local businesses and the tourism industry as well with visiting teams coming to the facility." General manager of Noosa Tigers AFC Mitch Woods said that construction of the drains will start after the current season ends in September with completion before the next season starts in 2020.
Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O Brien presents Noosa Tigers Australian Football Club with grant. "This grant is huge for us. This is the perfect example here today with this rain to show why we need these drains." "It'll enable us to get top AFL teams here in the future and also enable us to hold more events." The Noosa Tigers AFC supports 250 juniors, 60 seniors and about 100 Auskick players, and it is likely to grow once the upgrade is complete. The funding will be delivered by the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities. â—? noosatoday.com.au

Gowan Lea Timbers is an independent, family run timber and building supplies merchant situated next to the Sunshine Coast Airport. For over 25 years, Gowan Lea Timbers has built a strong reputation as a leading supplier of a full range of interior and exterior timber and construction supplies for builders, renovators, Councils and Government departments throughout QLD and NSW. With their own sawmill, treatment plant, timber dressing shed and kilns, they are the timber experts. "Timber is always popular as it adds a natural warmth and character to any new home or renovation, but you need to be careful that the timber you choose suits the intended application," Managing Director Anthony Thomas said. "Customers generally have a good idea of the look they are trying to achieve, but
often need our help to transform that vision into a reality. There is a lot to know and understand with timber, issues like natural durability and strength need to be carefully considered when deciding on the right timber for each application, and this is why they come to us. In this way their hard-earned dollars are invested in quality timbers that will perform their function and look great for years to come." "You'll find our prices are competitive, but it will be the quality of our products and our customer service and advice that will have you coming back for more," Anthony said. "We're probably a bit old fashioned in some ways - we don't sell lawn mowers, pot plants or garden furniture. We stick to what we know and love - timber. We've evolved over the years to supply a range of other products like fibre cement etc, but timber is in our DNA and always will be." ●

SALT PROPERTY SERVICES LOOK AFTER YOU BY ABBEY CANNAN SALT Property Services has committed to providing a high level of customer service and a minimum five-year whole of system and installation warranty on all solar systems after signing on to the Clean Energy Council Solar Retailer Code of Conduct. The code of conduct, which is currently the only solar industry code of conduct authorised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, is designed to give consumers peace of mind when making the decision to invest in a solar system by helping them select a quality retailer. Clean Energy Council Chief Executive Kane Thornton said people had a lot of things to consider when making a major purchase such as a solar energy system, and the process could be confusing. "By choosing to buy from a business that has signed up to our voluntary Solar Retailer Code of Conduct, you are choosing a business which has committed to a higher standard of quality and service," he said. "The solar industry is well regulated,
with all systems needing to meet Australian standards and be installed by a specially trained and accredited solar installer. This code is another important step that provides consumers with even greater confidence, and the ability to select a retailer who guarantees a high level of customer service." SALT Property Services spokesperson Tony Vitagliano said customers should look for the Clean Energy Council Approved Solar Retailer logo to choose a business that has signed on to the code. A full list of Approved Solar Retailers can be found at approvedsolarretailer.com.au. ●

MUSICAL MARVEL FOR NOOSA BY JIM FAGAN This year audiences in London, Paris, Minneapolis, Pennsylvania, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and, no doubt elsewhere in the world will be entranced by Guiseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem—one of the great icons of western music. And here's the good news. You don't have to travel all over to enjoy this musical marvel by Italian composer Verdi, best known for his wonderful operas like Aida, La Traviata and Il Trovatore. It's being performed on Sunday afternoon at 2pm on May 26 right here in Noosa. Noosa Chorale is staging it at the Leisure Centre at Wallace Park and music director, Adrian King, can't wait. "It's a conductor's dream," he said. "Blazing trumpets, thunderous drums, divine solo passages and grand, moving choruses. Probably that's the best way to summarise the power and emotion of Verdi's masterpiece. "It's the Chorale's 25th Silver Anniversary Year and we want to make it a year that
Adrian King. Noosa music lovers will long remember. "We have 130 singers in the chorus as we've invited the Sunshine Coast Choral Society which, coincidentally, is observing
its 25th year to join us. "I'm also music director of that choir and I can tell you the enthusiasm in rehearsal of all these talented singers in both choirs is
wonderful to see and hear." Adrian said the four guest soloists included internationally recognised opera singers Hungarian soprano Judit Molnar and Australian baritone Jeffrey Black. "Queensland Opera tenor Andrew Pryor has appeared several times with us and is a Noosa favourite. Our mezzo is another Queensland Opera soloist Melissa Gregory." Adrian said: "The 50-piece Verdi Orchestra will be the largest number of musicians the Chorale and the Sunshine Coast Choral Society has ever sung with - not unlike The Symphonic Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi of Milano, founded in 1993 by Vladimir Delman. "I am delighted and proud to work with such wonderful and talented Sunshine Coast players in what will be a most memorable and exceptional afternoon." Noosa Leisure Centre. Sunday May 26 at 2pm. WANDERING DOGS A DANGER
LENSCAPE
I read of yet another horrific dog attack on our fast diminishing koala population. It is all very well to say owners should take more responsibility for their animals, but the problem is they are not listening. I walk every day and frequently see people stop and remove the dog’s leash and allow it to run through the very areas where I have seen koalas and kangaroos (and they carry no ‘doggy bags’). I have been set upon in St Andrew’s Drive by a small dog while its owner watched and the comment was “maybe I should get a muzzle as she has done this before”. The list goes on: a little dog, on a leash, was mauled by two marauding dogs in Tewantin. We all pay our rates. Some years back we had council rangers patrolling our streets for wandering dogs. If no owner was located they were taken to the pound and the owner had to pay a fine to get their dog back. Come on council, this is not good enough. Get your act together before we see another terrible injury or death, hopefully not a child. D. Sharpe, Tewantin
GLAD FOR WALLACE HOUSE HAVEN Having had a connection with Australia for a great many years: my father spent much of his WW2 service here in the British Navy Fleet Air Arm, was posted here on a number of occasions for his civilian job which meant that I went to school in Clovelly, Sydney for a little while. My parents eventually retired to the Sunshine Coast and I followed later to work in Sydney and Brisbane. I then returned to the UK. Now retired my husband and I looked for a suitable place to enjoy the European winter (he plays golf and doesn’t enjoy being ‘rugged up’). On retirement we took a world trip stopping off in various locations finally settling on the Sunshine Coast. Our reason was because the area provides both of us with the activities that we can enjoy. My husband has joined a local golf club and joins me at the aquatic centre for aqua a couple of times per week. I enjoy the aqua sessions and the occasional squad session. We also enjoy walking on the beach. I also enjoy doing embroidery and have been lucky enough to discover Wallace House in Noosaville. A fantastic facility for those of us who enjoy joining in with others for a few hours in the morning or afternoon to learn new skills or just enjoy improving those skills you already have. I chose embroidery as being travellers, an embroidery doesn’t grow in size so is easy to take backwards and forwards. The ladies of the embroidery group welcomed me in with open

I also stay in touch when I return to the UK by email from the very efficient embroidery group secretary. I am so glad that I discovered this little haven of creativity tucked away in Noosaville. NEW LAWS BAD FOR TOURISM I am extremely concerned with the actions of the Noosa Council under Mayor Tony Wellington that is about to bring in new shortterm accomodation laws into the Noosa Shire. These laws will drastically change the ability for home owners of property to lease their holiday homes in certain areas. There are people, businesses, shops and restaurants dependent entirely on this trade. The State Government that will lose about half a million dollars a year of “land tax” revenue due to council's decision to introduce

these new zoning laws. Properties in these restricted areas will become “Principal Place of Residence” (PPR) homes subject to no State Land Tax. Having a holiday in Noosa will be a thing of the past unless you stay in these very expensive areas zoned for holiday letting. This will increase their prices accordingly due to short term holidays acceptable in their zoning leaving 50 per cent of Noosa unavailable to accommodate other holiday makers. It could commence a “black market of holiday lettings” yet the State Government will be denied “land taxes” because land owners who are unable to take short-term holiday bookings will have make these Noosa properties their PPR. Is the State Govt NOT aware of this revenue loss? Yet at a time when Queensland has been suffering calamities one after another of drought, fire, flood and over 500,000 cattle drowning what would possess Noosa Council who partially rely on foreign income in the form of tourism and holidays to try and bring out a new zoning rule at the expense of the State Government revenue and property owners affected by this proposal? If you can’t get accommodation in Noosa because council has rezoned the areas forbidding short-term rentals, yet allowing them to proliferate in other areas, then rents will escalate further while in other areas it will be forbidden? This is certainly bad for tourism in Noosa. Tom Sendro, Noosaville
other countless products boomed with full employment, then the need for transportation occurred as suburbia spread out from the cities, the car industry came along with Holden to help out, next Ford came on board with Toyota and Mitsubishi in later years, everything was booming, full employment, plenty of money to go around but then the Government decided to join in the global market, abolish all tariffs on imported goods so that the exporters in Asia could have an even playing field in Australia. But it seems that the visionaries of the time got it wrong as our factories could not compete with the imports made in the sweat shops of Asia, consequently Australian factories started going out of business or relocating to Asia, unemployment started to rise and everything was on downward spin. Then along came Tony “the mad monk" Abbot who in his flare of wisdom decided to cancel the $100 million subsidy to the car manufacturing industry to keep it afloat as the tariff on cars was cancelled. Little did he know that in one single stroke of wisdom killed the car industry, put 10,000 people out of work, forced the closure of hundreds of small factories that supplied components to the car industry so generating a billion dollars of revenue to be directed as unemployment benefits. Great future ahead, no work, no taxation revenue to the government as it was forced to borrow money on the International market to pay all the unemployed. So you ask, is a recession possible? No mate, it is a certainty. F Venturini, Noosa

YOUTH TO SET AGENDA
Looking at “Australia in colour" on SBS the other night, a tear welled up in my eye to see the vision of post WW2 in Australia that said “populate or perish" so went ahead and got migration on the way. True enough people came and needed accommodation, lo and behold, the building industry boomed, the factories making all sorts of whitegoods, fridge stoves, ovens, washing machines and

NOOSA TODAY 27
WHAT’S ON HOMEGROWN TALENT ON SHOW Nick Enright's deliciously fast-paced comedy Daylight Saving is on at Noosa Arts Theatre for a limited season from Thursday 25 April. Set in the late 1980s, Daylight Saving is an Australian romantic comedy about love, loneliness, food and friendship. Director Tania Nash said she is excited to have assembled a dream cast for this too rarely seen gem. ''I am thrilled to have such a brilliantly gifted cast sign on to perform in one of Nick Enright's most popular plays," she said. The stellar cast is led by Zoe Griffen and award-winning actor Glen Miller as husband and wife, Felicity and Tom. Playing the role of Josh, an American professor of history and Felicity's old high school flame, is the charming Frank Wilkie and the hilarious Sheila Oliver will play the role of Bunty, Felicity's loud, opinionated
mother. The gifted Ali Lambole performs the role of Felicity's intrusive and clueless neighbour Stephanie, and muchloved local Clark Groves plays Jason, the famous tennis player managed by Tom. Considered one of Australia's muchloved playwrights, Nick Enright trained for the theatre at New York University School of Arts after early experience in Australia including with Nimrod and MTC. He was an actor, director and teacher as well as a writer. PA. His creative genius was cut all too short when he died at the age of 52 in 2003. The Noosa Arts Theatre is located at 163 Weyba Rd, Noosaville. For more information visit www.noosaartstheatre.org.au/ daylight-savings/ or call 07 5449 9343. Dan's new album 'Aviary Takes' was recently released on Friday 15 March and to celebrate its release, Dan will head back out on the road armed with a guitar, a keyboard and a fresh batch of anecdotes and bad 'dad' jokes. Dan said he is really looking forward to hitting the regional road with 'The Aviary Takes' tour. "It'll be good to make up for the shows I had to cancel last year," he said. "The Aviary Takes are a group of songs I recorded recently and they include old, current and new tracks with a couple of surprise covers thrown in. "It'll be great to see all of your lovely faces at the shows." The show is located at The J, 60 Noosa Drive, Noosa Junction and tickets are on sale for $43. sides. There were some good runs made by the dragons but there were a lot of turn overs. Both teams applied pressure in the first half and it was a hard contest. The second half saw Uni run away with the game, though the Dragons were valiant in defeat. Max Johnson-Thompson made some spectacular tackles throughout the game. The Dragons have some lessons to take away from the match, and will be stronger for the experience. U6’s match report and photo by Rachael Griggs A bit of rain didn’t stop the under 6s from another mighty performance. Against a well drilled Noosa opposition the Dragons defended well, with a standout performance from Henry, who showed great speed around the field. Incorporating some skilful passing and setting up tries, Arthur, CJ, Jax, Nixon, Nya and Owen all proved that the mighty U6 are a force to be reckoned with. ●

U8’s by U’s Manager Andrew Hillhouse The Eumundi Dragons U8s learnt some valuable lessons on the weekend against the Noosa Dolphins. Though they were slightly out sized they held their own and consistently tackled, won the ball at the break down and scored an equal number of tries. The team is starting to gel together and are keen to get amongst it with some epic mauls, passing and support. Tries by Brooklyn Griggs, Jack Cooper, Billy Gunton, George Hillhouse and Josh Kuczynski were the result of some great team effort. Most of the team backed up and ran on for the U9s for some more game time against Maleny. U10’s Match Report By U10’s Manager Pamela Campbell-Jones It was a tough day at the office for the U10 Dragons against a strong Uni team. The authors' Cairns left, Murphy right. consequence at Margaret River, Kanga became a big, imposing man, absolutely fearless in and out of the surf, and with a deserved reputation for not suffering fools gladly. Needless to say, when he was arguably the best surfer in the world to never win a world title, and I was fooling around as the editor of surf mag Tracks, he did not suffer me gladly. But we're mates now, and he and coauthor Wayne Patrick Murphy allowed me a preview of the second volume of "Kanga - the Trials and Triumphs of Ian Cairns", the
book he'll be signing at Annie's Books in Peregian this Saturday between 10am and noon. It's a great book and Kanga doesn't hold back - I cop a couple of well-deserved jabs here and there, but it's not an exclusive club, I can tell you. Kanga and Murph are great surfers and great blokes, and this second collaboration is well worth a read. Plus Kanga's lived in California for decades, and Murph in Ireland, so they've come a long way for this. Make them feel welcome. ●

My friend John Witzig was studying architecture and had built an interesting minimalist bush shack about 200 metres back from the point. Whenever I came to stay we'd surf the point with Baddy and a crew of new residents who'd come from the Warilla/Shellharbour area south of Wollongong, guys I'd grown up surfing with. Those sessions were so much fun, long before localism. I remember a couple of times Baddy turning up at the shack at sunset with a six-pack and a couple of good-sized fish he'd caught off the rocks at Spooky. Fishing was a passion and in later years it became his profession. Although they're fuzzy now, after decades of only very occasional contact, I have only good memories of Baddy Treloar, and as I flipped through the social media threads in the hours and days after his passing, I found that in this I was not alone. He was a much-loved figure, not just in Angourie but wherever he surfed and travelled. And I bet in that tough little surf town he called home, the tears and the stories are still flowing. Vale Baddy Treloar, who actually lived the life we all once aspired to. Kanga hops into Annie's Another iconic figure from Australian surfing in the 1970s will be in town on Saturday. Ian "Kanga" Cairns went on to become a polarizing figure in the administration of world tour surfing (he founded the Association of Surfing Professionals in 1982), but surfers of a certain age will remember him most for his no-holds-barred attack on the biggest, meanest waves he could find. The Kanga snap at big Sunset defied gravity, and logic. A skinny kid who grew up surfing waves of

Albert Falzon's landmark 1972 surf film Morning of the Earth still stands the test of time, almost half a century on. It's all wonderful stuff, but for me, and I'm sure for a great many surfers, there are two standout moments. The first is 28-year-old big wave rider Rusty Miller and 14-year-old Narrabeen grommet Stephen Cooney standing on the low tide reef at Uluwatu, waiting for a break in the mountainous sets so that they can paddle out and surf the iconic left for the first time. (Well, first time for the cameras, anyway.) The second is a rough-headed ranga seen sanding the rails of a new board outside a north coast farmhouse, then running down the familiar track to Angourie Point to rip the bag out of those bowling rights to the rocking soundtrack of John J Francis's "Simple Ben". Who among us hasn't run down a track to the surf mind-singing those great lyrics, "Just give me sunshine through the autumn, sweet snow to the spring / Corn by the water of an old mill stream, and you give me all, you give me all." Well, the real Simple Ben ran down that track to the point last Thursday and never came back. David "Baddy" Treloar, 67, suffered a massive heart attack while surfing the break he had dominated for longer than anyone, and couldn't be revived. The surfing world lost a man who could have been a world champion but was such a revered figure because he chose a different path in life, the peaceful one that runs by the old mill stream, in fact. Baddy was a city kid from Manly, and when Albe filmed that famous sequence in the autumn of 1971, he'd only just discovered Angourie country soul after a stint shaping on the Gold Coast with the Brothers Neilsen. But country soul was to become his life, and although he continued to compete selectively through the 1970s, his heart wasn't really in it. He'd given it to Angourie. I first met Baddy in the late '60s when he thrashed my sorry butt in the heats of the NSW Schoolboys at North Steyne. Although by then we were on prototype trackers, he brought to shortboard surfing the style and grace of a Midget Farrelly or a Ted Spencer, both big influences on him, even though he had the imposing build of a Nat Young. I loved his relaxed style, but he was a ferocious competitor. That ferocity had all but disappeared when I got to know him at Angourie in the mid-'70s. He sat up the point a bit and waited for sets, letting the wide ones roll through for the pack inside. But when Baddy paddled in, he owned the wave with the kind of authority that only comes with complete confidence in your ability.

VICTORY FOR TIGERS A GUTSY EFFORT The Rococo Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers have recorded a second straight victory to start 2019 with a gutsy 15 point victory over Sunshine Coast rivals Caloundra in heavy conditions. In fact the rain did not stop for the entire game as both teams continually traded blow for blow in a very entertaining affair. Only in the middle part of the final stanza did Noosa look to have done enough to snare the points as the resilient Panthers continued to pressure. Noosa coach Adam Bovalino was very happy to get the four points saying ‘Gee they are tough to beat down here and especially with the conditions like they were. We’re
just really proud of our boys to grind out the win. Win’s like that are really important especially away from home and against a quality opposition. The boys are pretty sore as you’d expect after going hammer and tong in those conditions. We’ll recover and then hit the road again to face Mayne next Saturday’. Noosa’s backline was superb with Ryley Buntain and skipper Aaron Laskey just rock solid the entire day. Their constant spoiling and repelling the ball into attack made them two of the best players on the ground. Tyler Stack was awarded the players player from the Caloundra senior coach after
another outstanding performance on the ball. Football manager Mitch Woods also a consistent contributor on his wing amassing 28 touches to be definitely among the best. Big Connor McDonald and youngster Mac Johnston were terrific in the ruck whilst Jai Fitzpatrick and Nick Hill were very important in the win resting up forward and snagging crucial goals. A five goal haul from Ryan Jeffrey was crucial to the result as he continued his love affair of being dominant over the Panthers. Great to have you back Ryan! A very pleasing win to bring home the Wayne ’Dozer’ Dover memorial trophy

that is played between these two clubs in memory of the great clubman he was. On a sad note black arm bands were worn last weekend in honour of Tiger legend Raymond ‘Bones’ Murray who died last Wednesday. ‘Bones’ was a triple best and fairest winner, a multiple premiership winner and a Sunshine Coast AFL Hall of Fame recipient. Our deepest condolences go out to ‘Bones’ family and friends. The Rococo Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers are back down the Bruce highway this Saturday as we take on the Mayne Tigers which is never easy. See you all down there! Go Tigers ●

With the end of March now upon us this past week North reef has been providing anglers with some big jewfish, pearl perch, longtail tuna and various cod species. Most fishing this time of year is done with a heavier paternoster rigs fished hard on the bottom with mullet, squid and pilchard baits. Closer in Sunshine Reef has been holding great coral trout and standout sweetlip. These fish are best targeted with live bait/slab bait and a snelled or gang hook rig with a running 8-10 ball sinker. Spanish mackerel and even the odd spotty mackerel are about so pilchard floaters are a must if on anchor. The Spanish are huge at the moment so using single strand wire is recommended as well as super small swivels. In the surf the gutters are providing light surf anglers with small dart and bream with the occasional bigger fish coming from the points of Arkwright and Noosa Headlands. As usual fishing with light running sinker rigs and light lines for the small fish and heavier gang hook setups for the bigger fish. In the Noosa River we have had a change in conditions with the recent rains. This will result in a flush of prawns which the vast majority of bigger fish love. With this is mind, now is the time to try and match the hatch with soft plastic prawn profile baits with night time a great time to target the big flathead, jacks and bigeye trevally. Be sure to carry a big landing net when land based and a decent pair of pliers. Areas to concentrate your efforts include the river mouth, Dog Beach, Munna Bridge and Noosa Marina. For those fishing baits during the daytimes, the turn of the incoming tide is a great time to fish as the cleaner water helps clear up the dirty water produced by the recent rains. Lures Fishos who have been chasing the elusive red-dog have been doing their best by throwing 80-100mm hard body lures and bigger paddle tail soft plastics. Lastly with the recent rains the crabs are very much on the move and now is the time to get your pots out. The freshwater areas of Lake Mac and Borumba dam certainly got a good drenching with Lake Mac Donald now overflowing and Borumba almost at full capacity. Fish in both areas will be feeding on various prey items getting washed off the trees and surrounding hill sides. With
