One for maritime buffs
History made at Bairnsdale
INTERESTED in Australia’s maritime history? Then here’s a suggested outing for your Probus members that is both interesting and inexpensive! And, if you live on the southern side of the city, it is also easily accessible! The Victorian Maritime Centre is situated on the Esplanade at Crib Point where it is the home of the Western Port Oberon Association. The centre’s museum has a large range of Australian Navy exhibits including models of former Australian Navy and merchant navy ships and maritime artefacts. In particular, the association is ultimately committed to having two famous ships become the focal items of this museum - the former HMAS Submarine ‘Otama’, and the former Port Phillip Pilot Vessel MV ‘Wyuna’. Why not consider visiting the Maritime Centre to learn more about maritime history and the Association’s projects? Cost per head is very small to cover light refreshments. And, if you are reasonably accessible to the Mornington Peninsula, this can make for an interesting half-day outing, and could maybe combine with lunch at one of the local eateries in Hastings, Balnarring, Merricks, or Flinders. To arrange a visit to the Maritime Centre, please phone Rosey on 0476 109 223 to make a time for your club’s visit. Visit www. maritimecentre.com.au or on Facebook www.facebook.com/victorianmaritimecentre

Don’t leave it to chance “BY the time he passed away, Richie had lived for 20 years with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Each year he seemed to get worse. Winters were particularly tough,” says Ian. With the help of other family members, two of whom are doctors, Richie outlined his preferences for care in an Advance Care Directive. “When Richie lost the ability to swallow, a palliative care specialist was called in. His job was made easier because Richie had written he was 'not to be intubated or any other extraordinary measures taken'. He had what is known as 'a good death'. There was no pain.” Ian is of the view that the sadness of losing Richie was eased in the knowledge he had his family with him when he died and that Richie died on his own terms. “It’s shocking to me that so few people have even considered advance care planning.” Don’t leave it to chance. “We know that around 50 per cent of people will not be well enough to make their own end-of-life decisions. Don’t leave family members guessing at what you would have wanted. Writing an Advance Care Directive is easier than you think. You don’t even require a lawyer,” explains Ian. Advance Care Planning Australia (ACPA), launched National Advance Care Planning Week for the first time in 2018. It runs again this year on 1 -5 April. The initiative is helping to increase public awareness and encouraging people to start a conversation with loved ones and make their preferences clear. Australians are urged to get involved by attending an awareness-raising event or to seek more information online or though
Before his brother Richie died in 2017, IAN HENSCHKE knew little about advance care planning. He is now an ambassador for National Advance Care Planning Week. As Chief Advocate for National Seniors Australia and former ABC broadcaster, Ian is adept at using his voice and advocacy. He encourages others to learn about advance care planning and the peace-of-mind it can bring to the individual and their loved ones. Richie Henschke was able to die on his own terms.

IT’S A CHALLENGE, BUT WE’RE UP FOR IT The President Rennus Crossley Hello Probians, The position of president is a little more challenging than I had anticipated but, as I have said, I will do it to the best of my ability and I am so thankful to have such a supportive committee. I am prepared to take responsibility that in future you will be able to rely on our financial reporting, which I believe can be improved.
I believe the delegates should be given an amended annual income and expenditure for the year to 30 September 2018, bringing in the interest received from the term deposits and showing depreciation as an expense. I also believe the quarterly statements should be calendar quarters not strange periods to take them up to the quarterly meetings which are some weeks after that date. I need help from my Probian friends to find an auditor. If you are pleased with the person that does your club’s audit could you please let our secretary know the particulars. I believe the audit of the PAV would not be any more work than any Probus Club.
The next challenge is to address whether it is possible to meet in the city or on the western side of the city. For this to happen we would need a venue with a non-charging car park. To rely on trains to get to a venue we then have the problem of where to park a car at a station after the folks have gone to work and filled all the station parking. A good thing about the Mulgrave Country Club is that it is very near the Monash Freeway so that someone driving from the other side of the city does not need to go through the city streets. Yours in Probus Friendship, Rennus Crossley. PAV President

Staring in Shanghai they saw the Yu Gardens, visited the Silk Factory, had an evening on the Huangpu River then went on a five day cruise up the Yangtze River taking in the 3 Gorges, the Ciqikou Ancient City and many temples. They then went on to Xian to see the Panda Conservation Centre, the Terracotta Warriors and the Ancient City Walls. Next stop was Beijing to visit Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China and the Summer Palace. Some members then flew on to Hong Kong while others flew straight home from Beijing. A most enjoyable time was had by all.

Food, history and culture Armchair Travel Sue Grady TO be honest, I didn’t even know where King Island was when my friend suggested we go there. I had seen King Island Dairy cheese in the local supermarket, but hadn’t thought anything more of it. But when I realised that this idyllic Isle, sitting in the middle of the Bass Strait was a mere 45-minute flight from Melbourne, I was sold. With only 1600 people living on the Island, there is space to roam, something you get a hint of before you even land. From the plane you see acres of lush green pasture, which is testament to the good growing conditions below. Someone who could speak to this and so much more was our tour operator Matthew. A fifth generation King Islander who had so many interesting stories to tell as we wound our way around the Island. He has lived and fished there his whole life and like most King Islanders is involved in many different aspects of the community, with a wealth of knowledge to share. Our four-day tour gave us such a comprehensive look at the Island, including the opportunity to meet the producers of some of its famed produce, during the Meet Your Beef tour and visit to the King Island Dairy. We were also able to sample some of this produce at fabulous restaurants around the Island, who benefit
The beautiful King Island. from the paddock to plate culture that is alive and well on this isolated isle. As we toured around and enjoyed the pristine environment it was easy to see how residents fill their spare time fishing, diving, surfing and enjoying other opportunities to engage with nature. Even the birds think it is awesome and use the Island as an important stopover in their annual migration, with the Wings on King project monitoring birds as an indication of the health of the whole Island, to ensure a sustainable future for the Island, its people and its wildlife. I was also struck by the history and
culture on the Island, with both the Museum and Cultural Centre giving real insight into the realities of living on an Island in the middle of the Bass Strait. The museum is beautifully curated and contained within the old lighthouse keeper’s cottage, with a wealth of information about the history of shipwrecks and so much more. I could have stayed there for hours. The quality of art produced on the Island was also a surprise, but having seen the rawness of the environment and inspiration available it really made sense. Artists are drawn to these conditions and it really shows, with an opportunity to purchase
work both large and small at the Cultural Centre. At first glance, it would be easy to dismiss this as a tiny Island that deals in beef and cheese, but there is so much more. It is multi-layered and the experiences that are available there are intimate and authentic. King Island is truly an amazing place to visit, which is why we have multiple tours available for individuals, couples or groups to join, or you can form your own club departure. Island hopping to Norfolk THE three Probus Clubs on Phillip Island combined in February for a visit to Norfolk Island. Cowes, Phillip Island, and San Remo clubs are part of a close knit society and often join together. In this instance to visit Norfolk Island which is an even closer society, where a third of the 2000-plus residents are descendants of Fletcher Christian and the mutineers from the HMS Bounty. The fascinating history of how the Bounty mutineers ended up on Pitcairn Island with their Tahitian ladies, and were subsequently granted land on Norfolk Island by Queen Victoria, was well covered and celebrated at various outings. At a dinner with the descendants we had our own celebrations to add. Bruce and Wilma Mourant were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, having spent their honeymoon on Norfolk Island. Mike McCaughan, Neil Horkings, and Pat Bowen all celebrated their birthdays on the same day that traditional dancing was being demonstrated at a mutineer descendant’s feast. Enough said, but grass skirts and arm waving were involved. We toured Kingston, which is world heritage listed. There were two convict settlements and many of the buildings which were built are still standing. We learned about the brutality and legends that unfortunately go hand in hand with convict settlements. It was only after the second convict period ended that that the mutineer descendants, who had outgrown Pitcairn island, were settled on Norfolk island. We enjoyed a wide range of outings and
got a good insight into life on Norfolk as it is today. We were interviewed live on the local radio station and made to feel very welcome, dining at a number of private homes. Norfolk is a stunningly beautiful island with Norfolk pines and a variety of vegetation on high cliffs and in valleys. The rich volcanic soil is conducive to plants growing quickly and prolifically. Cattle and chickens roam freely adding to the homely atmosphere. Our trip concluded with a tour of Colleen McCullough’s home, where we learned about her life while seeing her eclectic mix of furniture, artworks, and keepsakes, from around the world. The tour was organised by Trade Travel and Going Places Travel, and we were well looked after. - Pat Bowen, Trips Coordinator, Cowes Probus.

Happy memories on birthday THERE were loads of laughs and happy memories at the Bentleigh Club on Wednesday 13 March, as The Probus Club of Waverley celebrated its 35th birthday. Established to cater for “active retirees”, the Men’s Club was established on 14 March 1984. Due to long waiting lists over the years, numerous other Probus Clubs have subsequently been established in the Monash area to cater for the demand. “As one of the clubs established in the early days of Probus, we have been focusing on attaining this significant anniversary because it is unusual to have such long serving membership,” club president Murray Dance said. “We lost the last of our original year’s membership, Frank Poke, last November, but he was still coming to the monthly meetings right up until he passed away.

Members enjoy the function.
Two local sponsors receive their certificates of appreciation. From left: Carolyn Barton (Barry Plant Mount Waverley), Nicki Collings (Hamilton Place Travel) with club president Murray Dance.
“The changing demographics, particularly in the major cities, mean that celebrating 35 years of service will become harder to attain”. The 10 current/past presidents attending the function led a hearty rendition of Happy Birthday from the attendees. Sixty members and guests attending were entertained by a hilarious performance of Australian poetry by Don McQueen, known professionally as “The Bush Balladier”.

Honour for founder
A few members enjoying the celebrations.
THE president of the Probus Club of Warragul Ranges, Jenny Neil, recently had the pleasure of presenting the club’s first life membership certificate to Ruth Jones. Ruth was the inaugural president on the commencement of the club in 2006. She served in this position for two years and has since been an active member and stalwart of the Warragul Ranges club. Unfortunately, since the presentation to Ruth, she sadly passed away in mid-March. She had been battling her illness for several years and will be missed.
It's out with the old, in with the new TWENTY-SIX Traralgon Combined Probus Club members bid farewell to the old year and welcomed in the new year at Peter and Shirley Walker’s place. Members arriving were surprised when asked where their party hats were, they were all expected to turn up with hats. Most were guilty of not having any form of headwear. This was soon rectified as an assortment of hats was available courtesy of Peter and Shirley. Following much socialising, there was so much food and other goodies it was difficult to know where to begin. Many were coerced
to perform karaoke singing; this led to much laughter and banter. The night could not end without doing the ‘light fantastic’! Out came the music machine and the dancing began and continued until it was time to welcome in the New Year. It was a very enjoyable night with lots of fun, fellowship and friendship and our thanks go to Peter and Shirley for making their home available and for continuing a tradition which began some 11 years ago, farewelling the old year and welcoming in the new.
Club president Jenny Neil, right, presents the life membership certificate to Ruth Jones.

Lunch at Top of the Range.
THE Telstra Museum in Hawthorn took Blackburn South Ladies Probus Club members and their guests on a trip down memory lane as guide Murray went through developments in telecommunications over the last century. Club members all remembered the different telephones and some recalled their working days using the old switchboards. Another volunteer, John, told the group about both the perils and joys of being a junior telegraph boy in his youth. He amazed with his multi-tasking skills, as while talking with the group he was able to decode with total accuracy the names of members, which were being sent to him in Morse Code. The fun and fellowship concluded with a very enjoyable lunch at the nearby Glenferrie Hotel.

A very enjoyable day was experienced by the Knoxfield Ladies Probus members in February, travelling by bus to Kilmore to visit the Myriad Glass Studio. The vivacious owner and talented glass worker Marina Villanio entertained the group as she explained the process used to create the most beautiful glass items and jewellery, all hand crafted in her colourful studio. Marina explained that her hobby beginning in 1997 quickly became her obsession, and she now creates and teaches, mainly kiln-forming, also known as fusing and slumping as well as glass mosaics. Along with seven members of the Bayswater Ladies Probus who joined Knoxfield for this outing, members had a wonderful time choosing items to buy as well as indulging in a home-made morning tea. After lunch at the “Top of the Range Tea Rooms on Mt Macedon, a wander to the Memorial Cross helped to walk off the delicious lunch followed by scones, jam and cream. Unfortunately due to roadworks and a road accident (not our bus thankfully), the group was running late to visit Edgar’s Mission Farm. Luckily there was time to walk around this haven for rescued animals and to chat to some of the inhabitants. The Knoxfield ladies have also met at Tosarias Restaurant Rowville for another of our Sunday brunches. They had a most informative talk by Smirty Bagga from

Keilor honours its fantastic four FOUR very deserving members of Keilor Combined Probus Club became life members on 18 February 2019. Ron Morrow has been a club member for 23 years, Judy Vincent 18 years, Shirley Gray 15 years and Rob Brown 14 years. Between the four of them they have clocked up a very impressive 70 years of service. They were presented with their awards by club president Ron Andrew.
THE Probus Club of Pakenham held its annual general meeting recently with gratitude to the members who put their hand up to take on the positions on the committee. These members will be responsible for the planning of the club’s 30th anniversary, which is due in September. What a wonderful situation to be in, while some clubs find themselves in trouble as the years go by. Lots of interesting and exciting things are in the planning stages for the forthcoming year including the club’s annual holiday. There are some vacancies for membership available at the moment and it is hoped that people who have moved into the district recently or new retirees will think about joining the vigorous club. For information on future membership please contact Sue Ralph on 5941 6012.

AT the AGM on 4 March 2019, the Probus Club of North Balwyn decided to have a fun event and held a competition to see who could recognise the most members from their wedding photos - quite a challenge. What a wonderful response, 21 members provided their wedding photos for the competition. The brides all looked beautiful - wearing such stylish wedding gowns and head dresses - and the grooms all looked handsome. Members had loads of fun crowding round the photo display board trying to recognise the brides and grooms. It was an enjoyable and fun event.

Marina Prior at Bunjil BUNJIL Place has now become the entertainment area and central meeting place in the Berwick area. Situated in the Fountain Gate precinct, it is an architectural delight. It contains the City of Casey offices, the Central Library, cafes and restaurant plus a magnificent theatre that can seat 800. Fifty members of the Combined Probus Club of Berwick Central had a magical outing to this venue in late February to a Marina Prior concert. It was a full house that gave her
a standing ovation, one that she fully deserved. A highlight was her singing of a selection of Andrew Lloyd Webber songs including from Evita, Phantom of the Opera and Cats. She had played principal roles in all of these shows and she provided the necessary drama for each role. What a delight. The day included morning tea, the show, and then a roast lunch afterwards in the restaurant with 200 other Probians. What more could one possibly want? It was a great day.

Cruising around SA
Geoff Taylor, Joan Rodwell, Arthur and Alma Clover, Joy and Greg Millington, Annette Smith, Denis and Val Hallinan, Elaine Stock, Bill and Cath Caddy, Gwenda Fisher, Heather and Colin Crawford and Val Austin. From Kangaroo Island the ship headed for Port Lincoln, the “Seafood Capital of Australia”. Port Lincoln is also the major commercial centre for the Eyre Peninsula. Disembarking, members were serenaded by a Jazz group, a nice surprise. Like the other ports of call some members took advantage of the various shore trips while others were happy to take in the sights and the many markets with their interesting stalls. The last day was spent at sea and members of the group did their own thing! Last minute retail therapy in the various on
board stores and preparing for our return to normal life: of course getting ready for disembarkation in Melbourne. While on this cruise members celebrated two birthdays and a wedding anniversary. All occasions very enjoyable: each event a moment to remember and cherish.
ON one of the hottest summer days of the year, members of Pakenham East Probus boarded the bus to start the trip to Williamstown. The bus took the group first into Southbank, where they caught the ferry down the river. Along the way the captain gave a running commentary on the development that was taking place along the river. Arriving at the Williamstown Jetty, it was a short walk, to the Fish and Chip shop for lunch. After lunch, they took a bit of a wander, while looking for an ice cream shop, no wonder on this very hot day. In the meantime the bus came to Williamstown to pick the group up again, to drive around the historic city of Williamstown. The bus driver was very informative about the history of Williamstown. Williamstown was proclaimed a town in 1886 and a city in 1919. It was the major port for Melbourne, it wasn’t until the 1850s that activity around the port began in earnest, as prospectors passed through the area on their way to the goldfields. Many thanks to Julie from Tour Local for a great day.
The consensus of the group was that it was a great short cruise - and they are looking forward to the next cruise - 14 nights from Melbourne to Queensland in March 2020.

IT was a warm sunny day when a group of 16 Traralgon Combined club members boarded the train in Traralgon, looking forward to a cruise to South Australia. Having taken notice of temperatures in that state during the previous week they were worried that they were heading to much hotter weather. The first two days were at sea, getting to know the surrounds and relaxing. The days were taken up playing trivia, checking out the on board stores, drinking coffee and eating. In the evening the group took a trip to see a show at the Princess Theatre, the Vista Lounge or one of the other lounges and dance the night away. The group docked at the passenger terminal, Port Adelaide on Friday 25 January around 6.30am. Many of the group took advantage of shore trips to the Barossa Valley or to the pretty German village of Hahndorf while others took advantage of having some retail therapy in Adelaide as well as taking in the many interesting sights of the city. Departing Adelaide they set sail for Kangaroo Island, dropping anchor at 7.30am on Saturday. The group was ferried by ship’s tenders to the wharf. As many had never visited the island before, going on one of the organised shore trips organised by the cruise company seemed a great idea and was taken up. There were others in the group who wished to do their own sightseeing. An added attraction was a market set up by the locals on the outside of the football oval. The stall holders did very good business.

A delightful surprise trip THIRTY-TWO members from Keilor Combined Probus Club were delighted when a Mystery Tour Bus pulled up outside the Healesville Sanctuary. The group had a tour guide who passed on information about the inhabitants as they walked around. Transport was provided for members who were not up to the long walk. An amazing bird show was the highlight of the day. After lunch members descended on the Chocolate Factory at Yarra Valley where most indulged in super-sized ice creams and bought chocolates. Very contented passengers then enjoyed the ride back home.
A Will is only one piece of the puzzle By Andrew Simpson National Head of Wills & Estate Planning Over the years I have spoken with many Probians about estate planning and what it takes to get their life admin in order.
personal decisions. This can start when you decide and continues to be effective if you lose the ability to make your own decisions. Appointment of Medical Treatment Decision Maker
A surprise to most was that it doesn’t just stop with a Will. It’s also about planning for circumstances where medical and financial decisions need to be made for us.
An Appointment of Medical Treatment Decision Maker is different to a POA, as they are tasked specifically with medical decisions if you are ill or injured and can no longer make your own decisions.
Forward planning makes sense. We do this with our finances, with property arrangements and also our superannuation – so why don’t we do it with our lives?
Advance Care Directive
The unavoidable fact is, failing to do so puts your family and kids in an extremely stressful situation down the track. I can assure you estate planning doesn’t have to be as daunting or labour intensive as you may think. There are 5 vital documents we should all have. A standard Will A Will is a legal document that enables you to determine how your ‘estate’ is to be distributed after your death. This includes your money, property, shares, investments and possessions. Enduring Power of Attorney (POA) An Enduring Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to nominate one or more persons to act on your behalf for legal, financial and
You are also able to prepare a second document called an Advance Care Directive which allows you to record your wishes regarding treatment and communicate them to your Medical Treatment Decision Maker so that they have an understanding of what is important to you. ;
other preferences around burial or cremation
;
the location of your assets so your executors may easily find them
;
who you would like notified about your death.
Statement of Wishes A Statement of Wishes is a separate document to your Will. A Statement of Wishes is not binding but can assist your executors when it comes time to administer your estate. At Maurice Blackburn, we store your Statement of Wishes with your Will so that executors have everything they need to administer your estate. Things that might be included in a Statement of Wishes: ;
music that you wish to be played at your funeral
;
who your pall bearers will be
;
who will scatter your ashes
So, as you can see, there is a lot more to life and estate planning than a Will. To help you make a start, Maurice Blackburn has developed a unique package called MyLife Documents™. It allows you to prepare these five essential documents easily, in one go, under the consultation of an expert Wills & Estates lawyer.
This is exceptional value. In my experience, the cost of not planning your estate is far greater than the cost of planning it. So don’t put it off any longer. By making one simple phone call today, you can take the pressure off your family and loved ones down the track. Call 1800 519 740 to make an appointment with our expert lawyers *Applies to standard drafting only.

Rest up in the Old Hospital THREE years ago, Peter Campbell had the good fortune to sell his graphic design business in Melbourne. After 30 years in the industry, he felt it was time for a change. His wife, Michelle felt the same way she had trained as a nurse years ago and was working a couple of days at Cabrini Hospital as an assistant - a more stress free role. They “retired“ together and spent the next six months travelling - riding a motorcycle across South America, to south east Asia, and up north to Queensland. Peter was too young to fully retire and “needed a project”, as Michelle put it to him. One day he forwarded on an email to Michelle and asked “How about we buy a hospital’? Michelle did not hesitate with her enthusiastic “Yes!” The rest was history. They bought the now named “The Old Hospital”, in Loch, South Gippsland, only a 90 minute easy drive from the Melbourne CBD. Friends and family took one look at the neglected building and thought they were mad, but Peter and Michelle both had a vision. The village of Loch needed comfortable, communal accommodation where groups of friends could relax, enjoy each other’s company and explore all that this beautiful South Gippsland town and surrounds has to offer. Peter and Michelle spent 12 months refurbishing the old hospital building and surrounding gardens, transforming it into a comfortable guest house for groups of
six to 20 adults. They officially opened their doors to guests in December 2017 and have been embraced enthusiastically by many groups who have enjoyed the 10 bedrooms - all with ensuites, commercial kitchen, large lounge and dining room and north facing deck looking out over the hills of Loch. The entire property is equipped with cosy hydronic heating, reverse cycle air conditioning, as well as ceiling fans.
The Old Hospital is a 200 metre walk to cafes, shops, a wine bar and a brewery. Both Peter and Michelle feel it has been a great decision to escape city life and feel fortunate to be living in what they consider their little piece of country paradise. If you are looking to make your own escape for a few days or more, please contact them on 9597 0137 or visit www.theoldhospitalloch.com.au

Barmera - a Riverland gem
12414043-DJ15-19
HAWDON Street, Barmera - in South Australia’s ’must see’ Riverland region has much to live up to. After all, it’s named after Joseph Hawdon, who 180 years ago discovered the town’s best known feature - a freshwater lake. On March 12, 1938, Hawdon named the sprawling waterway Lake Bonney - after his friend Charles Bonney. (The pair were the first to drive livestock from New South Wales to Adelaide). It was up to other people to recognise and remember Hawdon, and he had a main street near the lake named after him. Nearly two centuries later, the lake, and Hawdon Street, are still attracting large numbers. All who see Lake Bonney know how picturesque it is. The visitor’s book at the Barmera Country Club vouches for how tourists are finding it a “home away from home.“ “Thanks for the care and attention you gave us while staying at the Barmera Country Club,“ was the opening comment from Edith Whyatt, the tour and activities officer with the Combined Probus Club of Horsham. In May, Edith organised a party of 30plus folks from her home town to base themselves at Barmera, on a five-day, fournight tour of the Riverland. “Our members had nothing but positive comments. It was ideal accommodation for the over 60s. The spacious rooms with views over the fairways (the Barmera Country Club sits on the local golf
course) were well equipped and extremely comfortable. The meals were very tasty and well presented. Edith wrote how the Victorians loved travelling the Riverland. “Our members loved the five days, including the most relaxing luncheon river cruise. Our coach captain (Ian) was excellent - so obliging and very informative. “Our time was most enjoyable - thanks to your organising and friendly service.“ Depending on which way you are travelling, Nhill is up or down from Horsham, just 75 kilometres separating the towns. And only a few weeks separated their trips to the Barmera Country Club. “Thanks for a wonderful, wonderful five days at Barmera,“ Fran Bone, who organised the Nhill visit, wrote. “All (our) participants are telling
everyone what a great time they had,“ Fran added. “Accommodation, meals, the attractions, coach hosts, driver and guide were first-class.“ In July of 2017, another two Probus clubs from Victoria, Drouin and Timboon and Districts, travelled to Barmera. And their feedback was similar. “Drouin Probus thanks you for taking such good care of us, congratulations to the chef and other staff for the excellent meals and attention to our comfort,“ is how the comments from Drouin start. “Everybody had an enjoyable time.“ These are just a few comments of how people have enjoyed the Riverland - and the Barmera Country Club. But why don’t you see it for yourselves - and organise a packaged holiday? You’ve got the place to stay - and there’s plenty to do in the Riverland.
Like visiting the Country Music Hall of Fame, Wilkadene Woolshed Brewery, seeing and crossing the Paringa Suspension Bridge, River Cruising, visiting the Rain Moth Gallery and spending time - and sipping a wine - at the well renowned Banrock Station. These are the tip of the iceberg, there’s much more to see and do. When recently asked what was to see in Barmera, and the Riverland, a tourist information officer replied to the inquirer: “What is there not to see?“ “We’ve got everything here. It’s full of horticulture and viticulture, there’s a steam museum, South Australian Country Music Festival and Awards, Easter twilight markets, an open air cinema and we’re midway between Adelaide and Mildura. “And did I tell you last year we were the Australian Tidy Towns Overall Winner for Keep Australia Beautiful.“ Then there’s Lake Bonney and the Barmera Country Club. The former is home to much sailing, fishing, boating, wakeboarding and skiing - and is best known as the strip of water where the legendary Sir Donald Campbell put his racing machine ’Bluebird’ over. In 1964, he became the only person to hold both the land and water speed record. Well over half a century later, tourists are still coming to see Lake Bonney. Read about the Barmera Country Club on the website. Do your Probus club a favour, organise a tour, and find out first-hand what the place has to offer. You won’t be disappointed. And that’s a promise.

Greenways: Ship’s Ahoy! THE Mornington Peninsula is a seaside haven. With beautiful beaches, ocean views, relaxed locals and activities galore, it’s no surprise that it’s regularly been rated in the Top 10 Most Beautiful Places in Victoria. Nestled in this famous locale is Greenways Retirement Village. One of the few privately owned villages in Victoria, it has been the happy home to over 500 residents since opening in 1976. In such a prize location, residents can take advantage of everything the peninsula has to offer on their door step. Just ask the residents who attended the recent village cruise at Tooradin. It was a beautiful, sunny day in February. The village staff had organised an exciting day trip for residents starting on the village’s brand new, 25 seat Mitsubishi Fuso Rosa Deluxe bus. For many, it was there first time on board. Travelling in air-conditioned comfort, residents enjoyed a scenic drive to nearby Tooradin before boarding a Tidemaster Tours cruise boat to experience the famous “Lunchtime Scenic Cruise”. On the calm waters of Western Port Bay shoal, with a cooling sea breeze, residents dined, drank, socialised and enjoyed the stunning views across French Island and the surrounding national parks. Many commented on the pristine beauty of the area and prolific bird life as particular highlights. It was certainly an experience enjoyed by all! With the Tooradin cruise such a success, Greenways’ next offering for residents is across the bay in Sorrento. Another Mornington Peninsula gem, Sorrento offers
the ambience and charm of a historical seaside village with the sophistication and style of a city shopping destination. Residents can look forward to boarding a scenic ferry ride from the main pier, past the Heads, to neighbouring Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula. Residents will revisit old friends at the Roro Café for lunch on the front beach. These are just some of the activities
on offer at Greenways Retirement Village. If cruising is not for you, enjoy the array of activities, functions and events hosted at the village itself. With everything from indoor bowls, exercise classes, lawn bowls, card games, rummikub, happy hour, movie nights, gardening groups, bingo, themed nights, Spring carnival functions and special-event celebrations, you’ll be sure to find something just for you.
So come down to Greenways, meet the residents and see what’s on offer. Newly refurbished one, two and three bedroom villa units and spacious apartments available. You never know - it might be the village for you! Greenways Village is at 330 FrankstonDandenong Road, Seaford. Phone 03 9786 8679.

Does life begin at 50? THERE’S a lot to say for being over 50. It’s a time of life that comes with the realisation that there’s more to it than you thought. More time doing the things you want to do. More time in the company of family and friends. More adventure. And the simple pleasures that make all the difference, every day. Truth is, it doesn’t take much to make it all happen. It comes down to a simple philosophy: freeing yourself of the things that hold you back from lovin’ this life. At Lucas Lifestyle Estate in Ballarat, a happy community of over-50’s has twigged onto something too good not to write home about. The first clue the moment you stroll through the gates is a clubhouse, buzzing with residents who are enjoying the billiard table, bar, library, cinema, barbecue and group activities. The second clue is less obvious but undeniably real. Between the brandspanking new homes, open space and trees, there’s a real a sense of neighbourhood values from days gone by; more smiles, passing g’days and idle chats on verandas. Easy-going neighbours that are more like lifelong friends. Even well behaved pets are welcomed. According to Lucas Lifestyle Estate resident Joyce: “I should have made the move years ago. I wanted to relocate to be closer to family and have the added peace of mind of feeling secure. I feel so relaxed in my new lifestyle that I am a completely different person now. I can enjoy socialising with the residents and getting to know everyone, we are certainly living the life of luxury.”
Joyce is also happy with the home design. “The homes here are built to a high quality and are spacious and so comfortable it felt like home straight away.” It’s all made possible by Gannon Lifestyle Communities, the people behind the new estate, with something called The Lifestyle Plan. Here, you only pay for your house and lease the land it sits on quite different to the way most retirement villages work. It means your going-in price is much lower and there are no council rates nor stamp duty to pay. There’s just a low weekly site fee and your own power, water, phone/ internet and insurance costs. No surprises, just more money in your pocket to work your way through that bucket list. The homes themselves are made up of a variety of designs to suit any lifestyle,

with enough choice and options to make it your own - but without the hassle of needing to decide on everything. As standard, you get secure parking for up to two cars, a modern bathroom and kitchen, two bedrooms, some with the option for an additional study. The cost of your home even includes landscaping out the front, fencing, paths, a clothesline and carport with security roller door. Beyond the front door and the leafy surrounds, Lucas Town Centre and community hub is also just a short walk from home, with a supermarket, bakery, pharmacy, health centre, cafe?, fruit and vegetable store, flower market, dentist and more. Public transport is located close by too. A little further afield, you’re only minutes from tranquil Lake Wendouree Reserve with

its relaxing walking and bike trail, not to mention other nearby parks and reserves, including Prince of Wales Park and Victoria Park. You’re also just 6 kilometres from central Ballarat and everything this vibrant city centre has to offer. Pat and Jim love living at Lucas Lifestyle Estate. “It’s the best move we have ever made,” they said. “When we got to see the Lifestyle Estate it was a real eye-opener to find what was available and the choices that you had. But we found the best things were the residents who made you feel you were welcome and helped to settle in.” So if you’re ready to start lovin’ this life, talk to the folks at Lucas Lifestyle Estate at 21 Harris Drive, Lucas or by calling 5334 1105 and discover how being over 50 can be so much more than you ever imagined.

Toilet seat solution THE Bidet Shop customer Mabel suffers with arthritis and a painful back condition but has found a bidet has made the everyday task a much simpler. “It’s marvelous! I’ve always wanted a ‘paperless’ bidet in my bathroom and I wish I found it years ago!” Mabel said. “The bidet simply replaced the existing toilet seat and automatically cleaned without toilet paper. The friendly staff explained that the bidet toilet seat has many health benefits as well as the comfort factors of a heated seat and other features,” she said. The bidet can be used in two simple steps. Press the bottom/feminine wash button and the bidet provides a stream of warm water to clean thoroughly. Then with just the push of another button, warm air gently dries without the need for toilet paper. Mabel said that although The Bidet Shop offered to send out a brochure pack, she decided to order a bidet straight away. Well it arrived a few days later. She installed the seat herself easily and as she had been told, it fitted perfectly on her original toilet bowl. “It is the best investment I have made in my personal health and hygiene in years and no longer finds going to the toilet an issue”.

Balmoral: A new lifestyle WHY choose a retirement village? For some it’s location, or facilities, services on offer, low maintenance. Or new home features. But, for most, it’s the promise of a thriving, social, welcoming and supportive lifestyle that is so important. Balmoral Over 55s Lifestyle Village offers a lifestyle few can match. It boasts an active, fun and happy community in the heart of Wantirna South. Being one of the few privately owned villages in Victoria, it puts people first, and has done for over 35 years. This means that the opportunities to socialise, meet new friends and get involved at the village are encouraged and supported at all levels. At the heart of the village, the Balmoral Community Centre is always busy. Residents come together and meet regularly for a cuppa, an activity or to share a meal. Many residents attend one or more of the regular activities on offer as well as the events, fundraisers, market days and cocktail parties (to name a few!) held in the centre. Some residents are keen volunteers in the lovely Balmoral shop. Conveniently located near the front of the community centre, it is a great place for a catch up and chat when grabbing your household groceries. The DVD and book library is also a very popular amenity, skilfully managed by groups of resident volunteers. Many residents get involved on activity groups so they can share their experience and expertise with others. Those that
enjoy working with their hands can join the Balmoral woodwork group, an active team who have built equipment for children with Cerebral Palsy and are highly recognised in the local community (and beyond!). Those with a sporting flare or interest can join the indoor or outdoor bowls groups, croquet team or table tennis squad. There’s even a social committee to ensure events or activities thrive and continue to meet the demands of the resident community. And, if that’s not enough, Balmoral is very fortunate to have an activities coordinator on the staff team. Samantha works enthusiastically to support and assist residents in delivering a calendar of special occasions, events, functions, activities, and opportunities to socialise, be entertained, laugh and have some fun. For those that like to get out and about,
don’t fret. Samantha usually manages to track down great seats for the most popular shows, at the best price. She’ll organise transport too so that everyone can travel together. Let’s not forget a delicious picnic lunch so no one goes hungry! Part of Sam’s role is to organise special annual events such as Balmoral’s fabulous Bollywood night or the many occasions throughout the year when entertainment and dancing is offered. Events such as Christmas in July, Christmas parties in December (lunch and dinner), and a New Year’s Eve party are regulars. One of the most important nights on Balmoral’s calendar is the Director’s Annual Cocktail Party. Hosted by the village owners, all residents and staff are invited to come along, share a drink (or two or three!), enjoy some fantastic food and
company, and help celebrate the unique and wonderful village that is Balmoral. So, whether it be fundraising events or themed functions such as AFL lunches, Oaks Day, Australia Day barbecue, Anzac and Remembrance Day ceremonies, the Salvation Army band, or St Patrick’s Day Lunch. Or monthly activities such as a trivia competition, Devonshire tea, market day, line dancing, bingo, movie afternoons, craft, crazy whist, book discussion club, speakers group, computer group or the bowls club smorgasbord dinner. Whatever your interest, Balmoral could be just the right fit for you. To see what’s on offer, drop past Balmoral any time. Staff and residents will make you welcome. Balmoral Village is at Ridge Road, Wantirna South. Phone 03 9800 1333.

Arthritis and your pets Vets&Pets Dr Leanne Pinfold
aggravate the symptoms of osteoarthritis so it’s important that your pet isn’t too chubby and gets sensible exercise. At least 20-60 minutes of low impact exercise, such as swimming or taking short walks is enough.
Thirteen-year-old Forest is a patient of Lort Smith.
OSTEOARTHRITIS is an extremely common condition that affects pets. At least 65 per cent of dogs and cats will develop osteoarthritis at some point during their life. The good news is with advances in vet medicine, early intervention and treatment can help slow the progression of the disease. WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS IN PETS? Osteoarthritis affects pets in the same way it does humans. This condition leads to the breakdown of cartilage in joints. Cartilage normally protects the joints and acts as a cushion between the bones. Once it is worn down, the bones become exposed and start to rub against each other causing pain and inflammation. As animals age their cartilage naturally erodes which eventually leads to osteoarthritis. Younger animals might be prone to osteoarthritis if they have genetic diseases, joint infections, fractures, or are overweight. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Cats and dogs may only show subtle signs initially. These can include: inappropriate toileting outside the litter tray; grooming themselves less; becoming
less sociable; reluctance to hop onto their favourite spots such as the couch; difficulty climbing stairs; and limping or stiff walking. You may also notice that your pet has poor flexibility or swollen, sore joints. They may even whimper or meow when touched. THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP It is a good idea to assess your pet’s environment and make sure they are kept warm and dry during the colder months. Ensuring they have soft bedding is helpful - special orthopaedic bedding is now
available for pets with arthritis. Slippery floors increase the risk of falling it is best to cover these areas to ensure they are non-slip. Additionally, rearranging furniture to help your pet access their favourite spots a little easier, such as the couch. You might need to create ramps so your pet can get in and out of the car, or up stairs. For cats, make sure litter trays are easily accessible and assist them with grooming, especially if they are struggling. Unfortunately, being overweight can
MEDICAL THERAPY The goal of arthritis treatment is to slow the progression of the disease and keep your pet as comfortable, healthy and pain free as possible. Medication may be prescribed by your vet to help with pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. If your pet is receiving these medications, regular blood tests to monitor kidney and liver function are recommended. A course of pentosan polysulfate injections may also be suggested by your vet. These injections help to stimulate cartilage production and heal joint damage caused by arthritis. Nutritional supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin are also available and can help to improve cartilage metabolism and protect your pet’s joints. Your vet may also prescribe a special arthritis prescription diet for your pet to help reduce discomfort. Complimentary treatments including acupuncture are available at many vets, including Lort Smith, and can be used in conjunction with other therapies. Together you and your veterinarian can tailor an arthritis treatment program that will best meet your pet’s needs.
Iconic Aussie song lost in British translation SIXTY years have elapsed since thousands of people combed the area just outside Guyra in New South Wales searching for Steven Walls. Johnny Ashcroft wrote Little Boy Lost, a song that has become part of Australian folklore. Although the song topped the Australian charts longer than A Pub With No Beer and Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport combined, Ashcroft failed to gain the overseas recognition that was his due, because people in other countries had their own ideas on the meaning of words and how their locals should treat a story that was uniquely Australian. Four-year-old Steven Walls became lost on the morning of Friday, February 5, 1960. Despite the efforts of thousands of people in what has become probably the bestknown search in this nation’s history, he was not found until well into the following Monday. The original Ashcroft version was delayed in the United States until American
My Word Laurie Barber singer Jimmy Dean “covered” it. When the original Ashcroft version finally made it to the United States it was seen as just another version of the Dean song. In fact, Cash Box said of the Ashcroft version “the Britisher debuts with an effective version of the song released by Jimmy Dean”. Ashcroft commented to me later, with disappointment: “No mention that I was the originator and that it was number one in Australia.” The most controversial version was that sung by Michael Holliday in England using rewrite lyrics requested by Tommy Steele. Ashcroft told Steele the rewrite stripped the believability from the song and it would not
be a hit in England - “and it wasn’t”. The first line of the Ashcroft version “in the wild New England ranges” was changed to “in the wild and distant ranges”. The second verse originally had “the wild bush horses” but the rewrite changed the words to “saddle horses”. Johnny Ashcroft’s “a lad of just four summers, Steven Walls that is his name” was changed to “they searched the rugged ranges, rising high above the plain”. The verse about the delightful Guyra character Dorrie Walls included “and a mother weeps in silence as she kneels before the cross and she prays to God in heaven for her little boy lost”. The Holliday version went “as she kneels beside the bed, her tears fall on the pillow where he’d laid his little head”. Later the “scrubby gully” becomes a “hidden valley” and the final verse gets another rewrite. The “far New England ranges” become the ludicrous “far and
distant ranges”. The line “there’s a story that the townsfolk and the bushmen often tell” becomes “and at night around the campfire there’s a story people tell”. Steven Walls, still at Guyra, sometimes feels a bit embarrassed about the trouble he caused, but I pass on Johnny Ashcroft’s thoughts as expressed to me: “I indicated to Steven that when he became the focus of the nation’s attention and his welfare was a matter of deep concern for millions, those searching for him became the coalface of that concern. Far from being uncomfortable about the event, he should consider that the search brought us together as a nation, reminding us of who we are and of the things in life that really mattered. During the search, people suddenly seemed to have a renewed sense of pride in being Australian because of the vast numbers who willingly gave of their time and expertise in that search. Most have slipped into obscurity but, like Steven, they are still there.”
