pleased to see the old building go. “I’m excited for the future of Hampton Park with hopefully a new development eventually revitalising the site. I encourage the property owner to continue working with council towards this conclusion,” he said. Priceline manager Lucy Steele, whose store is nearby, expressed her excitement, saying “I think it’s brilliant because there were a lot of people living in there at one stage so it’s just good to have that cleaned up.” “A lot of people move in the area so it would be good to have something to use,” she said. Spokesman for the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association Brendan Browne said they had their concerns with the number of apartments proposed and the lack of access to public transport. “A little bit of high density can be a good thing but we don’t want to overdo it,” he said.

Bulldozers have finally begun demolish works at the rundown Hampton Park Food Market which had been labelled an “eye-sore“ and a known trouble spot for squatters. In full view at the long abandoned site, which had been blocked off with temporary fencing, were dumped trolleys, graffiti-strewn walls, and broken chairs, tables, and windows. Demolition works started on Saturday 6 April at the Hallam Road site and are expected to be carried out for weeks. In February, Casey Council said it was assessing a planning application for a multi-use development including 117 apartments, shops and offices at the Hallam Road site. The application has also been referred to VicRoads and Melbourne Water for their approval, council said in a statement.
Councillor Wayne Smith said he was glad the demolition works were finally happening. “This one got out of hand; went on far too long,” he said. “They (owners) told us they were going to demolish...in the end they’ve done what they’ve said, and they’ve also got there application in for new development.” Cr Smith said some members of the community had been “freaked out” by the number of apartments earmarked for the site but said “I don’t really have a view on that; we’ll wait and see what it looks like.” He said he wasn’t sure where the planning application sat but added council was waiting on “more information.” “My concerns would be the usual things that associate with that many apartments; you know parking, traffic movements.“ Councillor Damien Rosario was also

Two hurt in blast By Brendan Rees A man has been airlifted to hospital after a gas explosion erupted at St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School in Berwick on Monday 8 April. Firefighters were called to the scene of a gas line rupture where two people were harmed about 11.40am. Ambulance Victoria said a man believed to be in aged in twenties was flown by air helicopter ambulance to the Alfred Hospital with burns to his upper body and legs in a serious but stable condition. A second man believed to be aged in his twenties was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene but was not taken to hospital. The gas line rupture caused a building on the school campus to explode into flames, a CFA spokesperson said.
Emergency services surrounded the 15 by 20 metre square affected building to prevent the fire from spreading. Due to school holidays no children were present on campus. About 12 emergency service vehicles worked to stop the gas leak. Berwick resident Jacki Manser whose granddaughter attends the school said she was shocked by the incident. “I didn’t know about it until my son rang me,” she said. “Very sad for everyone involved including the school, kids and the poor gentleman that’s been hurt. “They’re doing building works there at the moment...obviously didn’t anticipate anything like this,” she added.

Escalator faults upsets shoppers By Breanna Taylor The continuing escalator fault at Westfield Fountain Gate shopping centre is upsetting locals, who are outraged the issue has not yet been repaired. Local resident, Wayne Darvell, has shared his anger and disappointment at the shopping complex for not prioritising the issue that is severely affecting his disabled wife. Darvell, who has been a local to Narre Warren for 20 years and a frequent shopper at Westfield says it is “absolutely ridiculous,” the problem hasn’t been solved and urges the centre to take into consideration the harm it
causes to those with a disability that struggle walking. “My wife has osteoarthritis and this is putting a huge strain on her having to walk an extra distance. It might not seem a lot but to someone with a disability it is.” After approaching centre management, Darvell says he was told Westfield couldn’t repair the fault until parts had arrived from Germany. “Surely they could approach another company and get someone else to fix it, these escalators are used all over the country, “ he said. The fault escalator issue has caused Darvell and his wife to shop at other complexes and he says he has no plans to return to Westfield
Fountain Gate until management “get their act together.” A Westfield spokesperson responded saying, “the downward escalator from Village Cinemas is currently out of order due to complications from a power outage in March which at the time impacted the entire suburb. To minimise inconvenience as we work to repair the issue, we have a Concierge staff member located on the rooftop directing customers to the nearby stairwell and lift to access the lower level of the centre.” “All other lifts, escalators and travellators at Westfield Fountain Gate remain in operation.”

Berwick station car park expands Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a $500m boost for the Commuter Car Park Fund at the Berwick train station on Monday. Mr Morrison said $500 million would go towards getting people off the roads and onto trains. The Commuter Car Park Fund will enable the building of an estimated 50 park and ride facilities at train stations - meaning up to 25,000 cars will come off the roads. Member for La Trobe Jason Wood welcomed the announcement of Commuter Car Park. “People will see a tangible effect when these park and ride facilities are in operation with less cars on the roads,” Mr Wood said. “You cannot underestimate the difference to quality of life investments such as this can make.” Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said traffic will be flowing better across major capital city hotspots under the expanded plan. “As someone who grew up and lives in Melbourne’s south-east I have seen how congestion is impacting people’s lives and these projects will change that for hundreds of thousands of people,” Mr Tudge said.

Apex gang’s true history By Cam Lucadou-Wells
12404323-DJ46-18
It was not so long ago that ‘The Apex Gang’ loomed large. The terrifying spates of car-jacking, home invasions and smash-and-grab burglaries, the Moomba festival riots all seemed to point to a group that started with two teenage brothers in Apex Street in Dandenong in 2012. Author and lawyer Dr Brian Williams examines the group and the public reaction in his book Melbourne Under Siege? The Moral Panic behind the Apex Gang and Youth Crime. The group wasn’t so much a typical organised gang. If a ‘gang’ existed, it was a “small cohort of offenders” - a Facebook network that peaked at possibly 200 members, Dr Williams argues. They didn’t terrorise their neighbours but travelled to richer suburbs, kicking down doors, grabbing the keys to cars and leaving a trail of traumatised victims. Their violence induced a “moral panic”. The South-Sudanese community was identified with the crimes, even though the group’s offenders were a mix of backgrounds. As the reports mounted, ‘Apex’ became a “shorthand way to symbolise ‘African youth crime’, without the need to actually say it”, Dr Williams wrote. As a disturbing consequence, the “vast, vast majority” of law-abiding South Sudanese Australians became targets. They copped abuse in the streets, were suspected of thieving when shopping, and were shunned from getting work or rental homes. Kids from the community were scared to go
to school, Dr Williams writes. There’s a long history of youth ‘gangs’ in Australia, such as the postcode groups like Dandneong’s 3175 gang and the Sharpies, he says. Youth crime is often linked to young people not seeing a positive way forward. Initiatives such as sports teams help. “Youth crime has been going as long as we have had youths. It is possible to turn these kids around but there’s no simplistic answer to this.” In the media, some denied Apex Gang existed while others relentlessly talked it up as a threat. Dr Williams says there were “elements of truth on both sides”, adding that crime statistics could be often interpreted either way. “I don’t think you can blame the media a great deal. They can only report on the crime as it happens. “The better way to stop the reports is to stop the crimes in the first place.” Though the Apex Gang is “defunct”, still there’s derogatory online commentary on ‘African gangs’. “We can draw a little parallel with the tragedy in Christchurch. It shows the difference between free speech and hate speech - these things can lead to terrible situations. “Let’s hope it’s a turning point. “Perhaps on social media, people haven’t given enough consideration as to what hate speech is and how it impacts on people just going about their everyday lives.”

I write in reply to the letters published in the Star News (Thursday, 28 March), critical of Cr Sam Aziz. All credit to Cr Aziz to remember all the victims of bomb bullying or any other terrorist attacks around the world with a further minute’s silence. All victims of all these atrocities are innocent members of society who have suffered extreme violence. Since the horrific events in America (now called 9/11) with the loss of 2996 lives (including the terrorists) and 6000 injured, there have been more than 35,000 documented Muslim attacks around the world, resulting in at least one death per attack of an innocent soul. Of course, many of these attacks have multiple deaths, such as the Bali bombings, the London bombings, those across Europe, Philippines, Spain, Nigeria and Ethiopia, and in many other parts of the world. This figure does not include the bombings/fire-bombings of cathedrals, churches, schools, shopping centres, government buildings and temples, nor the kidnapping of schoolgirls by the Boko Haram denomination for the sex trade industry that have no recorded deaths. I would like to commend John N. Carpenter in supporting Cr Aziz for his balanced humanitarian reply to these critics (Star News, 28/3/19). I would also like to commend Eliezer Francois JP for his letter printed in the Star News 4/4/19 also supporting Cr Aziz. The oblique comments on the Philippines and Nigeria attributed to Cr Sam Aziz by an
anonymous letter writer in the Star News 28/3/19 was possibly in the Philippines case the shocking double-bombing of the Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic cathedral in Jolo, Philippines during the celebration of mass. The second bomb was deliberately detonated when rescuers and medics had entered the cathedral to assist the victims of the first blast; 20 people died and 111 wounded. Let us all remember all victims of any extremist violence at all times, and not just selectively remember some. Philip Wright, Pakenham
Squandering funds I am absolutely disgusted at this City of Casey commenting in the past that we have a problem with homeless people here and they are squandering ratepayers funds to go check out other countries like China. What a disgraceful use of our money we work hard for. It should be stopped by higher authorities. We cannot keep wasting money on these holidays for this lot. The rates never go down so they can tender out stage two of this Bunjil Palace while they have a surplus - it’s a joke. It’s time for ratepayers to stand up to this lot. Lionel Young, Berwick.
They rose to challenge On behalf of the Hillview Bunyip Aged Care Residents’ Committee, I would like to thank and congratulate CEO Frank Hoff and
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Director of Nursing Cassie Pronk, the section heads, along with the exceptional staff and volunteers for their effective, efficient and sensitive management of the evacuation required by the recent bushfire emergency. Relocating a small number of high care and low care residents at any time is a big task, but having to relocate 40-plus people in an emergency is an enormous challenge - one that Team Hillview rose to and met admirably. At a time when age care centres are under intense scrutiny and receiving criticism, the achievements of these people needs to be acknowledged. Ron Bray, Residents’ Committee Chair.

Budding stars are slimed It was a gooey, oozy Saturday at Westfield Fountain Gate, where Nickelodeon Australia hosted auditions for season four of their SLIME CUP program. With season four due to premiere in July, the television giant was on the hunt for local superstars to join the cast of the reality series. 78 budding slime stars took part in the auditions, keen to be one of the 12 teams that will appear in the series. Keen contenders took part in a series of challenges designed to test their coordination, teamwork and problem-solving skills. In one challenge, teams had to land tennis balls in slime-filled cups fastened to a sombrero - or 'SLIMEbrero'. The challenges were followed by an interview where kids explained why they should star in the new season. Those who couldn't make it to the live auditions can still submit an entry online at the SLIME CUP website.

Grace’s time to shine By Jessica Anstice Casey's Grace Williams occupied a spot in 2019 Top Acts, an evening concert that presents VCE performing arts students who have achieved exemplary results in studies of dance, music and drama. Ms Williams attended Beaconhills College in Pakenham until Year 9, when she moved across to pursue her career in musical theatre at Patrick Studios Australia in Prahran. She is now completing her studies through Virtual School Victoria. Ms Williams started dancing at age three, she has danced in Casey and Cardinia areas since she was in Year 7, and has been training with Cathy Lea in Narre Warren for seven years. A component of completely a VCE dance subject is choreographing two solos, one technique solo, and one composition or 'story' piece. After three months of studying to enter Top Acts in 2018, Ms Williams was lucky enough to receive a high enough score that qualified her to performed in Top Class Dance. Top Class Dance is an audition concert, where participants are selected to then perform in the next stage, Top Acts. "I chose to apply for Top Class because it was a great opportunity to showcase my choreography and dance capabilities," she said. "Now that I have been selected, I am required to attend some rehearsals on three separate days and an additional rehearsal on the say on the concert. "Within these rehearsals I imagine I will hear their outlook on the concert, and learn my track for what I am required to do within the show." Ms Williams takes inspiration from the people that surround her every day. "Being that I attend a performing arts high school, the dancers and teachers there show-

"Simply because I love to sing, dance and act and such an experience would be incredibly humbling," Ms Williams said. "If it is possible, I hope to fulfil this in New York on Broadway. "However, when I am older, I think it would be fun to study and pursue a law career."

Nightmare commute Chisholm students Shaun Taggart and Shaun Hayes with their winning display garden. 192445
Young designers bloom By Breanna Taylor Melissa Hewitson and Lisa Keppel with Josh and Harry say traffic is dangerous at a crossing on Clyde-Five Ways Road in Clyde. 190940 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Research conducted by the National Growth Areas Alliance, which convenes National Nightmare Commute Day, shows there is a $50 billion backlog in roads, rail and health facilities in fast-growing outer suburbs. In the last five years, the fast-growing outer suburbs have accommodated 35 per cent of Australia's population growth but only received 13 per cent of Federal government investment in infrastructure. With population growth at double the national rate, another 2.5 million people are expected to be living in Australia's fast-growing outer suburbs by 2031. In previous years, #nightmarecommute trended during the morning rush hour. On 4 April 2019, #nightmarecommute will again share the stories of the millions of people who live in the outer suburbs.
Last week, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest garden event concluded with over 103,000 attending the Melbourne International and Garden Show at the Carlton Gardens. The show exhibited the fantastic works of contemporary garden designers and showcased the talent of two Cranbourne Chisholm apprentices who had entered their display gardens into The Avenue of Achievable Gardens competition. Third-year Parks and Garden Apprentice Shaun Hayes of Inverloch said that the objective of their ‘Modern Pop’ garden design was to create a modern space to relax. “My employer has been so supportive of this project and it has allowed me to really commit to the garden and step up as a leader. By choosing plants in different shades of black, grey, green and white allowed us to create a modern colour palette.” For fellow apprentice Shaun Taggart of Leongatha, the experience of the event from the design, planning and building, has been nothing but positive. “Seeing it all come together has been the
most rewarding,” he said. “We started work on the gardens way back in 2018. Some of our ideas didn’t go to plan so we’ve had to think on our feet and use what we had learnt through our course to find work-around solutions on the go.” Both gardens were well tremendously wellreceived and scored second and third in the event. Along with the competition awards and recognition, the students also had the unique experience of showcasing their work alongside some of the world’s best. The Horticulture and Landscaping industry is set to grow 18% by 2020 1 and the inclusion of horticulture courses in the Free TAFE initiative indicates the many opportunities available for people who would like to pursue a career in the industry. Chisholm is currently offering the Certificate III in Horticulture through the Free TAFE initiative at its state-of-the-art facilities in Cranbourne. Chisholm has invested significantly in the Environment department at Cranbourne, with world-class facilities that include a multimillion-dollar controlled environment glass house and cutting-edge equipment.

Casey residents joined frustrated commuters from around the country to share their #nightmarecommute on social media. National Nightmare Commute Day on Thursday 4 April gives a voice - and a hashtag - to the millions of Australians living in fast-growing outer suburbs who are fed up with wasting hours getting to work or study every day. City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said getting to work, home and school on time is a far-off dream for most Casey residents. The reality is a nightmare commute, with some people spending the equivalent of up to 28 days a year stuck in traffic. "Too many of us have to travel up to two hours each way just to get to work. On average, we are wasting up to a whole month every year sitting in traffic instead of spending time with our family and friends," said the Mayor. "We have a common-sense solution to nightmare commutes: we need federal election commitments to catch up with road infrastructure, improve our public transport and support local job creation. "National Nightmare Commute Day is our chance to show politicians why we are fed up and need some action from them. "Better infrastructure would cut the time lost by commuters in Casey, with congestion and lack of train access keeping people in cars for up to two hours a day and hampering business in the region. We're calling for federal funds to extend the Southern Dandenong Bypass and Thompson's Road, upgrade Kangan Drive/Clyde Road intersection, upgrade Glasscocks Road and extend Cranbourne Rail to Clyde.

Truckie’s windfall A Cranbourne East truck driver has declared 'his heart has stopped' after hearing the news he is now $200,000 richer from scoring the first prize in today's Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw. As well as winning the guaranteed first prize of $200,000, the thrilled winner's entry of five consecutive numbers also won an additional $1,000 in consolation prizes, bolstering their total prize to $201,000. The thrilled winner, who wished to remain anonymous, purchased his entry of five consecutive numbers at Hunt Club Lotto, shop R12 Hunt Club Village, at Linsell Boulevard, Cranbourne East. He won the guaranteed first prize in Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot draw 1272, drawn Tuesday 9 April. When a Tatts official called to break the exciting news, the happy winner was in such a state of disbelief, and it took a few moments for the news to sink in. "You're kidding me? Are you for real?" he questioned. "My heart has just about stopped. My heart has stopped! "My god! I'm shaking. Unreal! Sh*t! Unbelievable! Phwoah! Man! I certainly was not expecting this phone call. Bloody hell! "I haven't been playing Lucky Lotteries that long at all. I didn't know anything about the game until a friend put me onto it. "I thought 'I'd better have a crack at that!'. "Sh*t! Two hundred thousand? Jesus! "You don't know how good this is. Far out! This is excellent! Fantastic!
A lottery winner has his eye on an overseas holiday. "I'm going to have to take my friend who recommended the game to me out for a drink! "I'm going to keep playing! That jackpot is still out there so maybe you can call me again soon!" The hardworking night-shift truck driver said he was heading to tonight with a huge smile on his face. "You've just made my day!" he laughed. "It will probably be the first time in a while I'll be heading into work with a big smile on my face" When asked how he planned to spend his Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot windfall, the stoked bloke revealed he had his eye on an overseas holiday. "I'm over-the-moon! It's unbelievable!" he declared. It's still sinking in! Unreal. "I've got a house to pay off - that will take a good chunk off the mortgage. There are so many things it can help with. A holiday for a start," he said. "I was thinking of a cheap holiday over to Asia but now I think I'll upgrade and go to Las Vegas. "I'll definitely do something fun with it."

THE LOWDOWN Q&A
THREE … local Easter activities
with Jess Allen, Teacher - Early childhood education and education support at Chisholm TAFE, Berwick campus
What’s the best thing about teaching at Chisholm TAFE? The best thing about working at Chisholm is the team of people I work with. I feel very supported both professional and personally. I work with some inspirational and passionate people, from our manager through to all the staff. At Chisholm, you have the opportunity to build on your skills and learn new ones. What is something most people don’t know about you? I have a fear of birds but I love spiders and snakes. I spoke fluent French until the age of six, then learnt English, and now I can’t speak French. Have you noticed a higher enrolment in courses since the free TAFE courses were introduced? Yes - we’ve had had many more students enrol. Some students who thought they would never get the opportunity to study due to various circumstances have been able to commence their journey with us. What do you love about your role? I love that I can aid students in their journey, and that I can instil my passion for early childhood education in the students that come into my classroom. I love helping students who struggle and giving them the tools to work towards achieving their qualifications and building their confidence. It’s wonderful being part of their development both professional and academically. What is your most memorable moment? Definitely becoming a mum. Where did you grow up as a child? I was born in Mauritius and moved to Australia when I was six years old. I lived in Springvale and went to primary school and secondary school there, and then we moved to Narre Warren when I turned 14. What is your favourite movie? I have two. The Fifth Element, and PS: I Love You
Jess Allen. 192238

What is your favourite book? I love all books and have too many to name. I particularly love autobiographies non-fiction books, or fiction based on true life events. One of my favourites is You Can Heal Your Life, by Louise L. Hay At school I... Loved studying. I would ask for extra home-

work! I loved reading and when I in Grades 5 and 6 I would go and help the Grade 1 and 2 children who were struggling. So it’s obvious that ever since commencing school I wanted to be a teacher or psychologist. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? I would ensure that Australia became a sustainable country by using renewable energy.

A Limited number of homes have become available at Lifestyle Casey Fields. With two or more bedrooms, these warm and much loved homes are a great opportunity to become a part of this great community.
Berwick’s belter Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.
Each home has a contemporary and low maintenance design, plenty of storage even a garden and shed. Also enjoy all of the 5-star facilities right at your doorstep, tennis court, clubhouse, bowling green and so much more.
The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has
now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

Mick Matthews has pleaded for thieves to return to his plant machinery which was allegedly taken from a work site at Heather Grove, Clyde North. Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS 192319
The telehandler which was allegedly taken. The owner has offered a $1000 reward for anyone that can find it.
Top shelf thief hunt By Brendan Rees A tradie has been left gutted after his agricultural machine worth $45,000 was allegedly pinched from a work site in Clyde North. Mick Matthews says his telehandler which has a forklift was locked behind temporary fencing on Heather Grove when it was taken sometime between 22-25 March. He has now offered a $1000 reward to anyone with information that leads the machine's recovery. According to Mr Mathews the bandits lifted one of the hinges to the temporary fencing and entered the site. "You can undo the nuts with a shifter and open up a section, only takes two minutes," he said. "It's so easy to do." "They knew what they were looking for." He said the telehandler weighted about seven tonne and was used for the construction of a walkway bridge across a lake. Mr Matthews, the owner of M&M Rigging, said the machine was needed for one more day at the site when he discovered it missing on Monday 25 March. "I had to hire a machine to finish that last day off. I found it very difficult to do the day's work," he said. Adding to his frustration was that he had also sold the telehandler: "Bloke came and put a deposit on it and that happened." "It is low. We've only been in business for three-and-half-years. Started doing alright and something like that goes and kills it," he said. "It could be in Adelaide or Sydney now; it could be in parts on a container ship you don't know. "The machine was locked but it has to have a Manitou key, most Manitou keys all fit the same. "I just didn't know who to trust, whether someone knew about it or what, you don't know if you're talking to the person who stole it," he said. Cranbourne police are investigating. Anyone with information may contact Mr Matthews is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Built in 1945, the former linen thread factory has more recently been proving a fine educational hub for our youth, honourably serving as the Year 9 Campus for St Pauls Anglican Grammar School. This central location is as easily accessible to the centre of town as it is to the Princes Freeway. It is also in close proximity to parklands, walking tracks and schools, as well as recreational areas such as the Warragul Golf and Country Club. The location has made it an ideal educational precinct, set on 11,210m2 aprrox. of land and with a building size of 4,805m2 approx., is why the site is a great prospect with a multitude of opportunities for its prospective owners.

Easter Monday rodeo There is no better way to round out the Easter long weekend than with a family day out at the Lang Lang Rodeo. Now in its 76th year, the rodeo will draw thousands on Easter Monday, 22 April. "We have been running the rodeo for 75 years so we certainly know what we are doing," said a committee spokesperson. The committee is hoping for a great day filled with thrills and spills. The action starts with the junior and ladies barrel races, team roping, bareback riding, saddle bronc, local steer ride and lots more culminating in the thrilling Bullride event, with man pitted against beast! The livestock is supplied by J.P Gill and Sons which has had a long association with Lang Lang, initially as competitors then later as suppliers of first class stock. There will be amusements and lots of food stalls and, at lunchtime, the “Hughie Bourke Memorial Dog High Jump” competition with cash prizes. It is free to enter, so if you have a dog that loves to jump, bring it along and you could win a cash prize. Admission is $25 per adult, $10 for students aged 13-18 and children under 13 are admitted free - great value for a full day’s entertainment for the whole family. Gates open at 8am and the action starts at 10 am and finishes about 4 pm. The Lang Lang Rodeo Committee would like to thank the following sponsors: Lang Lang Hall Committee, Lang Lang Post Office, Lang Lang Eyecare, S & M Kerr Excavations, Adam Ladbrook, The Palace Hotel, T.E Ould Rice Hulls, Hanson Sands, Brown Bros Transport, Rice Horse Floats, Ponderosa Timber, P & K Brown Cartage Contractor, Howlers Brewery, Bob Comber Electrician, Equinade, J & F Glover, Lang Lang Business Group, Lang Lang Sands, Flourishing Figures, Alex Scott & Staff,

Casey suffers opening loss By Hayley Wildes
Melbourne Rebels players recently headed down to Endeavour Hills rugby union club.
Picture: SUPPLIED
Rugby rules in Endeavour Hills By Hayley Wildes The Endeavour Hills junior rugby union club has been around for decades, and over that time the club has gone from strength to strength despite being in an AFL-dominated sporting landscape. Gone are the days of needing parents to light up the field with their car headlights for training, and gone are the days of getting flooded off the field. Now, with new lights and three new fields to utilise, the club is on the look-out for new members to come and join in the fun. The club has something for everyone, with teams starting from under-7s all the way through to under-18s and both girls and boys are welcome. With the creation of the Super W league
- the national rugby union competition for females - there are bona fide pathways now available for both boys and girls to make it to the elite level of rugby union. An array of past and present Endeavour Hills players have represented Victoria, the Melbourne Rebels and even Australia's national team; the Wallabies. Sean McMahon and Siliva Siliva are two names that immediately jump out and without the opportunities presented to them in their earlier years as Endeavour Hills players, they wouldn't be where they are today on some of the biggest stages in the world. Marita Naea, Endeavour Hills rugby club junior coordinator, talked about the passion within the club and the volunteers that are helping the kids advance and chase their rugby dreams.
"We just want to create a platform for them to advance and it's a really supportive environment where they can get exposure to high-level rugby." Naea said. Having involvement with the Melbourne Rebels is another important link for the club and helps the juniors realise elite level rugby isn't far away. "Kids get to look at their role models," "At training they're getting excited, interacting with teammates, staying motivated and off the streets. "Grassroots is where it starts and we just want to grow rugby - our doors are always open to anyone wanting to give rugby a go." Forsyth caps off a tremendous season
The Casey Demons began season 2019 in disappointing fashion on Sunday at Box Hill City Oval. In a rematch of last year's VFL grand final, Casey took on Box Hill, and just as they did in the 2018 decider, the Hawks came away with the win. Inaccuracy in front of goal contributed greatly to the loss, but Casey's inability to produce the intense pressure that fuelled its run last year was the major difference. Box Hill jumped out of the gates with five first-quarter goals, while debutant Kade Chandler was the lone goal-scorer for the Demons as the Hawks took a 14-point lead into the first break. Coach Jade Rawlings implored his team to lift at the quarter-time break, and when Tim Smith and Chandler booted quick back-toback goals, Casey was starting to get back into the game, trailing 41-24. The second half of the quarter was dominated by Box Hill though as the Hawks answered every challenge to hold a comprehensive 38-point lead at the main break, 9.8 (62) to 3.6 (24). While the first half was rough going for Casey, the third quarter was even more concerning as the Demons were outworked and simply outplayed as the Hawks slammed on five goals to zero in the term. It was a brutal display from Box Hill, but the likes of Corey Maynard and Billy Stretch continued to soldier on for Casey. After 11 consecutive behinds, the Demons finally broke their goal-scoring drought when Mitch Gent kicked truly from a set shot late in the fourth quarter, but the game was all but over that point. Eventually, Box Hill ran out 62-point winners, 15.14 (104) to 4.18 (42). After thriving on defensive pressure and locking down opposition teams last season, Casey couldn't slow down Box Hill's forward line firepower on Sunday as the dynamic duo of Jackson Ross (5 goals) and Mitchell Lewis (4 goals) ran riot. It was an extremely disappointing way for Casey to start the season and without the likes of Corey Maynard (27 disposals), Billy Stretch (20 disposals) and Kade Chandler (20 disposals and 2 goals), the final scoreboard would've looked even worse. Despite a poor Round 1 outing, the Demons will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields where they will face North Melbourne from 2pm.
By Nick Creely Dandenong champion Brett Forsyth capped off a truly sensational season by becoming the first Panthers player to win the coveted Jack Ryder Medal as the most valuable player in Victorian Premier Cricket. The Panthers superstar - who is a former junior of DDCA powerhouse Springvale South - amassed an extraordinary 1297 runs at 51.9 (including Twenty20s) and was a constant force for the club this season, continuing a stellar career that has now seen him cross the 8000-run mark for the club. Forsyth played some fine hands throughout the season, but it was his unbelievable consistency that caught the eye. In 16 innings throughout the home and away season, the right-hander racked up six half centuries but more importantly three centuries - including a golden run of back-to-back tons against Greenvale Kangaroos and Footscray in Rounds 13 and 14. In the home-and-away season alone, Forsyth averaged a mind-boggling 70.3, and was a major factor in the Panthers also taking out the inaugural Victorian Super and Grand slams. Forsyth narrowly pipped Casey-South Melbourne captain-coach Luke Wells for the top gong after coming in as one of the heavy favourites for the award, and came home hard after a stellar run after Christmas. Forsyth, along with his teammate James berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
Dandenong champ Brett Forsyth claimed the club's maiden Jack Ryder Medal. 187072 Picture: ROB CAREW Nanopoulos, were also named in the Premier Team of the Year, capping off yet another excellent season for the all-rounder. Forsyth’s form has fuelled talk of him being
a worthy inclusion in Victoria’s Sheffield Shield set-up, with the 30-year-old former state rookie arguably the finest batsman in the state not to be playing at that level.

McInnes lights it right up By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers enjoyed another fruitful weekend of Big V basketball action, claiming vital early season wins. The Championship men found themselves locked in a high-scoring and riveting affair against Chelsea at home on Sunday afternoon. With both teams lighting it up, Casey eventually held on for an impressive 115-107 win as Michael McInnes (28 points) and Brandon Polk (21 points, 15 rebounds and 3 assists) led an even team effort which saw six players score in double figures. Casey owns a 4-1 record and sits second on the ladder. The Championship women had a disappointing outing on Saturday night at home, falling to Hume City 80-62. The Cavs were unable to truly get into the game and the Broncos responded to every push. Casey was led by Sarah Halejian (22 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals) and Tanarly Hood (15 points and 7 rebounds). With the loss, Casey falls to 3-1 on the season and sits third on the ladder. The Youth League 1 men demolished Warrandyte on Sunday afternoon at Casey Stadium, 103-66. Shooting 44 per cent from deep, the Cavs dominated from start to finish, led by Jordan Gooiker (20 points), Blake Taylor (10 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists) and Alex Bazzucchini (14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists). Casey owns a 5-1 record and sits second on the ladder. The Youth League 1 women split their two games over the weekend. On Saturday night, at home, they proved too good for Craigieburn, running out 86-69 winners as Lauren Tuplin (16 points and 6 rebounds) and Kim Shankland (12 points and 8 rebounds) led the way. Unfortunately, the Cavs couldn't back up
Sarah Halejian (22 points) tried her best to get Casey home against Hume City, but it wasn't enough. 192336 their fine work a day later, falling to Warrandyte on the road, 73-60. Despite holding the Venom to just 19 per cent shooting from deep, the Cavs also failed to hit their shots, which made it difficult to force any sort of comeback in the closing stages of the game.
Peta Rhodes (12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals) and Grace Watson (10 rebounds, 9 points and 3 assists) led the way in a tough outing for Casey. The Cavs now own a 3-2 record and sit third on the ladder. Round 5 Big V action sees the Youth

Money talks for Berwick! By Hayley Wildes
A missing boot couldn't stop Berwick's Travis Tuck from laying this tackle. 192268

Berwick raised its 2018 SEFNL premiership flag prior to the season-opening clash against Narre Warren.
12415883-FA16-19
Warren kept pushing hard and when Mitch Cox pulled down a massive pack mark and finished the job with a set shot at the 11-minute mark, Narre Warren regained the lead, 9.8 (62) to 8.13 (61). The final 20 minutes of the game were a see-sawing battle; a microcosm of the entire game. A run of seven combined points saw the lead change hands multiple times and despite players being unable to convert in front of goal, the intensity and hardness of the game couldn't be questioned. With the contest needing a game-breaker, it was none other than Harry Money who rose to the occasion. With just a couple of minutes remaining, Money marked deep in the pocket and kicked it straight through the big sticks to give his team a one-goal lead. Clearly not content with that vital major, Money produced again, just a minute later. A contested mark inside 50 from the resultant centre clearance not only allowed him to give the Wickers a two-goal lead, it also shaved valuable time off the clock. A goal just before the final siren was but a consolation to Narre Warren, who fell just short of Berwick. The Wickers came away six-point winners in a fantastic season opener, 10.17 (77) to 10.11 (71). Their ability to get the job done when it mattered most is what has powered them to successive premierships and looks set to hold them in good stead for a three-peat this season. Harry Money (four goals) was the matchwinner, while Nick Hillard, Will Arthurson, Ash Smith and Travis Tuck did it all for the Wickers. The likes of Nathan Foote, Dylan Quirk, Trent Cody and Bailey Delves were sublime for the Magpies, while Aaron Wilson and Michael Collins were pillars up forward.
12416237-15-19
It was a historic day on Saturday at Edwin Flack Reserve in Berwick. Not only did the all-conquering Wickers raise yet another premiership flag, the first ever AFL Outer East game was played. The stand-alone fixture to officially kick off the new league pitted two familiar foes, Berwick and Narre Warren, against one another and it didn't disappoint. It was a game of momentum shifts and as both teams found their footing early, skill errors would've been frustrating coaches Rhys Nisbet and Matt Shinners. But as the game wore on, the likes of Travis Tuck, Michael Collins, Harry Money and Nathan Foote rose to the fore and the two teams put on a show. The first 10 minutes of the game were dominated by Berwick, but the Wickers squandered opportunities in their forward half, whereas Narre Warren - through Aaron Wilson - got the first major of the day after 14 minutes of play. While Money was looking dangerous up forward, the Wickers failed to convert, mainly thanks to the Magpies defence which was forcing Berwick to take shots out wide. Narre Warren booted its second goal of the day with five minutes to play in the first quarter when Collins slotted a set shot from 45 metres out. At the first break, the Magpies held a 10-point lead, 2.3 (15) to 0.5 (5). In the huddle, Nisbet was calm and composed, but implored his team to "get out of your shells". It didn't take long for that message to be put into action. A mere 15 seconds into the second quarter, Tuck rampaged his way through the centre square and delivered a beautiful running goal from 45 metres out. It kicked the Wickers into gear. Further goals to Andrew Morozoff and Bailey Asher saw Berwick hit the lead, but Narre Warren wouldn't go away as Wilson booted his second major of the day to keep the Magpies in touch, trailing 3.6 (24) to 3.3 (21). Two late majors to Narre Warren - highlighted by an absolute hanger from Wilson, of which he converted the set shot - had the Magpies back in the lead, but a goal after the siren from Tim Gunn saw Berwick enter half time with a slender four-point lead, 5.8 (38) to 5.4 (34). The play of Wilson was simply sublime as he took key marks and provided a real presence in the forward line alongside Collins. For Berwick, the likes of Nick Hillard and Will Arthurson were doing a mountain of work. The second half began with the Magpies kicking the first two goals of the quarter, courtesy of Peter Gentile and Josh Tonna, to earn an eight-point advantage, 7.4 (46) to 5.8 (38). Just as Narre Warren looked to be getting on top of the match, the 'Money Man' came to the fore and got Berwick back on track. Harry Money shook off his first half kicking woes by booting a pair of set shot goals in four minutes to see the Wickers take back the lead. The second half of the third quarter was an absolute arm-wrestle as neither side gave an inch. It took some Tuck magic to break the goalscoring drought late in the quarter as he slotted a set shot from 50 metres out to give Berwick plenty to cheer about. With a quarter to play, the Wickers held a 13-point lead, 8.12 (60) to 7.5 (47). Just as they did all game long, the Magpies responded and under a minute into the final term, Lachlan Benson put through a major to reduce the deficit to just seven points. With Bailey Delves running amok, Narre

Hallam’s drought is over By Hayley Wildes MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 1 After kicking off its season with a loss to Karingal last weekend, Devon Meadows got on the board in season 2019 with a win over Pearcedale, thanks largely to a dominant six-goal haul to Michael Theodoridis. Pearcedale fell behind early and was unable to get back in the contest as Theodoridis and Mathew Fletcher combined for 11 goals. As Pearcedale tried to get back in the match the side kicked eight goals over the middle two quarters, but their defence couldn't match their offence as Devon Meadows slammed on 10 majors over that span. Devon Meadows claimed the win, 18.7 (115) to 10.10 (70). Travis Bravo, Luke Adams and Daniel Baker were best for Pearcedale, while Theodoridis, Fletcher and Troy Aust were sublime for Devon Meadows. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 1 The Doveton Eagles started their 2019 campaign with a resounding win over Hampton. Last season's grand finalists, the Eagles will be looking to go one better this year and claimed a 93-point Round 1 win over the Hammers, 19.17 (131) to 5.8 (38). Jarrod O'Neill (6 goals), Nicholas Beer and Nick Battle all starred for the Eagles. Keysborough claimed a hard-fought win over Murrumbeena as they scored four of the last five goals to win, 10.11 (71) to 9.10 (64). Riet Pal, Antony Brannan and Matthew Carnelly (3 goals) were impressive for the Burras. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 1 Hampton Park handed Clayton an absolute thrashing as Peter Dye booted eight goals in a dynamic display, while Nathan Carver (five goals) and Aaron Thornton (four goals) combined for nine majors.

Hallam finally broke its 595-day losing streak, returning to the winners list in their first game in Division 4. After a torturous 2018 season, the Hawks claimed a 41-point win over Carrum Patterson Lakes, 13.14 (92) to 7.9 (51), in scenes that gave the Hallam faithful plenty to smile about. After averaging just five goals a game in Division 3 last season, along with an average losing margin of 73 points, the Hawks looked re-invigorated on the weekend, led by Tom Bradley and debutant Jack Sharlassian (4 goals). The win, Hallam's first since a 132-point win over Dandenong in the final home and away game of the 2017 Division 3 season, signalled a new era for the club in the lower division. Meanwhile, Lyndale was absolutely torched by Moorabbin to the tune of 152 points, 36.17 (233) to 12.9 (81). A 13-goal to zero third term put the game well beyond doubt, while Trent Isbister and Jayden Denmead battled hard for the Pumas. Lyndhurst kicked 10 goals to zero after quarter time to run out convincing winners over South Yarra, 13.5 (83) to 2.4 (16). Jesse Walia and David Ford were best afield for the Lightning.
