WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT
NOOSA BACKS PLASTIC FREE NOOSA TODAY BY MARGARET MACCOLL "Awesome", "fantastic" and "excellent" were just some of the responses made by Noosa locals to the decision by Noosa Today to go plastic free from this week. All of us at Noosa Today would like to thank the community for the overwhelmingly positive response we have received since the announcement last week. And we would like to thank Noosa Council, Tourism Noosa and Plastic Free Noosa for their backing. In the past week we have had numerous Facebook likes and comments and heard from community groups, Facebook groups and individuals including Noosa MP Sandy Bolton who said it was "welcomed news" Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) praised the move that will also save the organisation unwanted work. "Great news that this newspaper has decided to stop wrapping it in plastic and throwing it onto footpaths," NICA president Bruce Hallett said. "Bushcare groups like ours are forever removing them from creeks and storm water outlets so it will mean we can concentrate on what we want to do... removing weeds". And a few individuals have echoed this sentiment. Jen Minke said it was a fantastic move. "I hate seeing the papers washed down the drain covered in plastic," she said. "Excellent initiative," Anna Macklin said.

GIANT GUM AXED AS LOCALS LOOK ON BY MARGARET MACCOLL Angry locals watched on helpless at Park Road Noosa Main Beach on Friday as another established gum tree fell victim to development. As the chainsaws sliced through the majestic tree residents including James Hordern tried to contact Noosa Council in a bid to stop the decimation"It's a real shame to see the end of Noosa Beach look more and more like Palm Beach in Sydney everyday - that is, all houses," he said. "It's sad that the new owners of these properties are determined to improve their views and have no desire to keep Noosa natural. It's a koala habitat." But Noosa Council said their efforts to
protect the tree had also failed due to the owner'w unapproved work. Council's Development Assessment manager Kerri Coyle said the felled tree was one of a number of trees that were to be retained under the original development approval for the site, in order to maintain the treed canopy backdrop to Main Beach. "However, the tree's root system was impacted by works the landowner undertook without Council approval back in April 2018," she said. "Council issued a number of large-scale fines to the owner and builder at the time, while also requiring the owner to monitor the ongoing health of this tree." Ms Coyle said the tree's health had
continued to decline since then and the owner's arborist recently advised that the tree should be removed urgently as the amount of die-back had increased from 5 per cent to 30 per cent in the past two months. "The owners are required to undertake replacement planting on site to ensure that over time the canopy will be returned," she said. Mr Hordern suggested Council make the actions of the owners more public "by putting up embarrassing signs at the front and rear of the property for six months stating that 'the owner has built an illegal structure on the property that has resulted in a beautiful and old established tree having to be removed'". ●
The Australian Body Art Festival transformed Cooroy into another dimension last weekend as 60 competition from across the nation interpreted the theme of 'Other Worlds' in many different ways.Body artists, face painters, visual artists and wearable art designers created and paraded their masterpieces across five competition categories at Apex Park during the two day festival. And added to this artistic expression were some amazing entertainers including Aerial Dreaming on the silks, the Mask Family street performers, Nova Star stilt walkers and Gubbi Gubbi Dances, who mentioned body painting had long been their custom. Event manager Danielle Taylor said the team which included many volunteers was overjoyed with the festival's success. "It was the biggest and best yet with something happening at any time in every corner of the festival," she said. "We have created something truly unique and amazing and we intend to nurture that in the future." Prize winners for 2019 included: Brush and sponge body art: Kristy O'Neil of Adelaide Airbrush body art: Ryan Cribbin of Katumba Special effects body art: Gina Nomachi of Melbourne Face painting: Yenni Redding of Darwin Wearable Art: Larisa Salton of Nambour. COVER STORY Kate Radin in Noosa photographed by Dave Gleeson Surfshots.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST BY ABBEY CANNAN oosa's home-grown beauty Kate Radin will represent Queensland in this year's Miss Universe Australia pageant, and if she wins, she plans on creating a virtual platform for victims of domestic violence. Growing up in Noosa was a dream for Kate, she first started modelling for local Noosa brands at the age of 15 and decided to enter the Miss Universe Australia pageant at the start of 2019 to take a step out of her comfort zone. "I would have never expected to get as far as I have and I'm very excited for the next few months," Kate said. Don't let the pageantry stereotypes fool you, Kate said there is so much more involved than just a woman walking up and down a cat-walk in a bikini. "All the contestants are smart and want to make a difference in the world. A lot of people think that they are only about beauty, but if you look at the previous Miss Universe winners, they all have degrees or even higher qualifications." Kate is currently studying a Bachelor's Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice and in the future, she plans on working in the domestic violence field. The winner of Miss Universe Australia will take home a $20,000 grant which is to be used towards education or a business start-up.

"I would put this grant towards a business start-up which would be a virtual platform for women that are suffering from domestic violence to talk to a psychologist. This way these victims will feel safe by providing a safe and respectful chat for them to discuss their situation that they're currently in and how they can get out of it," Kate said. Kate's idea comes at a time when any aid is welcome, after a recent report issued by the Domestic and Family Violence Death Review Unit states that during the period 2006-2012 there was an average of 23 deaths a year in Queensland linked to domestic and family violence- and that this figure equalled 44 per cent of the state's homicides for that period. New data released by the Queensland Police Service also revealed more than 28,200 breaches of domestic violence orders have been recorded in the past 12 months, which is a rise of 10 per cent, compared to February 2018. In the Wide Bay Burnett region, there has been 14 homicides in domestic and family relationships from 1 July 2006 to 28 February 2018. Data shows that the Wide Bay Burnett region has recorded 1,840 domestic violence order breaches within the past 12 months up until February 2019. This is an extra 130 breaches compared to the year before, earning a rise of 7.6 per cent. Women's Council for Domestic and Family Violence Services CEO Angela
Thursday, 11 April, 2019
Hartwig said this data flags concerns for women and children's safety. "There are generally never enough perpetrator programs to send offenders to. I think Kate's idea has merit and a wonderful thing to do to provide the opportunity for those who may not want face-to-face counselling to get some much-needed support," Angela said. Noosa Councillor Ingrid Jackson also said that she was dismayed to learn that breaches of domestic violence court orders have increased. "I greatly appreciate the many dedicated and generous groups who keep helping people and raising awareness about domestic violence - DVConnect, SCOPE, 1800RESPECT, Cooroy Family Support, The Salvation Army, Coast2Bay Housing Group, Noosa Queensland Police Service, Zonta Club of Noosa, One Billion Rising Noosa and Noosa Council," Ingrid said. "I know the Noosa Police assist families when there are domestic violence incidents and there is a Police Vulnerable Persons Unit helping perpetrators work through their issues. Providing such support is key to preventing breaches.I applaud Kate for her idea and encourage her to work in synergy with existing domestic violence help agencies." Noosa Heads Police Senior Constable and Domestic Violence Liaison Officer Mark Jones said the current increase in reported breaches
are reflective of a number of factors. "This can be from the community being made more aware through TV campaigns and other similar advertising of this nature, it could also be due to the confidence being instilled into victims to report matters to police and to get the help they need. The increase also could be contributed to the increase of population here on the coast. A number of Calls for Service are from itinerant holiday short stays and advertently alcohol is a related problem, calls are made from adjacent unit occupants and police are obliged to investigate all matters," Mark said. In terms of reducing the number, Mark said punishment does not always achieve a reduction however the current penalties could be harsher, as in some serious matters it is felt a harsher sentence is needed to deter people from committing DV. "There is also a need to support the offenders, in getting help to change their behaviours. This can be done through anger management programmes, psychologists and other support services with the goal of changing the behaviour of the perpetrator," Mark said. Mark said there are many DV services on the coast, however predominately for female victims. "There is always a higher demand in services than funding will allow however these providers try their best to cater for the volume of victims," he said. noosatoday.com.au
Miss Universe contestant Kate Radin photographed by Dave Gleeson - Surfshots. The Zonta Club of Noosa has a number of ongoing projects to support women and children dealing with domestic violence. This includes fundraising for domestic violence initiatives such as emergency housing, medical services, providing care packs containing basic necessities to women and children experiencing domestic violence and also sponsoring counselling and support programs. The Zonta Club of Noosa President Amy Ryan said it will take a joint effort from women, men and the community at large to lower the number of DV offences. "It needs to be understood that women and children are not the only victims of domestic violence. Men can be victims of domestic violence as well. Both men and women can be perpetrators; however statistically, domestic violence (particularly physical domestic violence) is more likely to be committed by men," Amy said. Amy said that any ideas which promote the empowerment of domestic violence victims in a safe and constructive manner are always welcome.
"I imagine the key issue with Kate's idea will be women being able to access the service safely, without fear of discovery through say, internet history searches by their partner. However, it is also fantastic to see an impassioned young woman trying to use her platform to improve the lives of other women," she said. Amy said that sadly, domestic violence is often a generational issue and children should be taught about respect and healthy relationships. "Victims of domestic violence should have access support services to meet their basic needs in the short term and resiliencebuilding support services with a long-term view of empowering these victims to leave abusive relationships. Perpetrators should also have access to rehabilitation programs and services to break the cycle of abuse," Amy said. Previous changes to domestic violence legislation in Queensland have already introduced tougher penalties for breaches of domestic violence orders, including imprisonment for up to three years if a firsttime breach; or up to five years if previously convicted of a domestic violence offence. penalties include fines; community service or being placed on a good behavior bond. There is no "one size fits all" penalty for breach of domestic violence orders. Ultimately, the penalty to be imposed is determined by the Court based on the seriousness of the offence; as well as the factors outlined in the Penalties and Sentences Act 1992 (Qld). The Palaszczuk Government has awarded $150,000 in grants to 32 community organisations across Queensland to host events as part of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in May. Minister for Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer said it was encouraging to see so many community organisations put their hand up to host an event to help prevent domestic and family violence locally and to support community members affected. There will be a march on Wednesday 1 May at 5pm from Alexandra Headlands HMAS Brisbane Memorial heading towards Loo with a View at Mooloolaba for a moving candle lighting ceremony to remember those who have sadly lost their lives to domestic and family violence.

LEGAL CUTBACK BOOSTS CANNABIS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Less than six weeks out from its first harvest Sunshine Coast medicinal cannabis producer Medifarm welcomed last week's news the Queensland Government has removed itself from the application process, making it easier for patients to obtain the medicine. Medifarm director Adam Benjamin said the move would mean doctors would still need to apply to the Australian Government Therapeutic Goods Administration to prescribe medicinal cannabis but not to the state government as well, as had been the case. "It's not for a government to decide the clinical need for a drug," he said. Health Minister Steven Miles said
repealing the Public Health (Medicinal Cannabis) Act 2016 would make it easier for patients and doctors to access medicinal cannabis which will be treated the same as other schedule 8 or schedule 4 drugs, though non-specialist medical practitioners will still require state-based approval for schedule 8 medicinal cannabis. Dr Miles said the local medicinal cannabis industry while still in its infancy would help improve access and reduce costs for patients. Mr Benjamin agreed local production would be more accessible with patients needing to overcome many hurdles to bring in imported products with only a limited number of countries producing the medicine and a smaller number having the

Fresh fruit and vegetables either grown at Noosa Pengari Steiner School or brought in by students was last week donated to OzHarvest to be distributed to 13 organisations across the Sunshine Coast to feed people in need. School principal Francis Klugman said the bounty was collected as part of the school's Autumn Festival, a celebration of the season of Autumn and abundant harvest, and was the third year it had been given to OzHarvest. On the final day of school before the two week holiday break students stage a performance of Saint Michael taming the Dragon before a blessing of the bounty in a celebration akin to Michaelmas, a religious feast held on 29 September which traditionally coincided with the harvest in much of western Europe. OzHarvest coordinator Michele Lipner said the bounty would feed about 60 people and provide about 300 meals but would all be gone by Tuesday as the demand from an increasing number of people in need in the region continued to grow. Michele said the organisation collected about 10,000kg of food a month from

"Just one charity, the Salvos at Noosa, feeds 50 to 80 people a week," she said. "That's a significant number." Mr Klugman said the event was a great way for the school to contribute to the local community, through its rich curriculum. "Seasonal Festivals offer an important means for our students to connect with the various rhythms and systems in the natural world, building a strong sense of connectedness and understanding," he said. ● noosatoday.com.au

TAX PROMISE? No sniping. Is the $75 a ‘trickle down’ deposit on the $550 for electricity, promised when they axed the tax in 2013? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach
LENSCAPE
REAL COSTS OF ELECTRIC CARS The Federal Budget has diverted attention from Labor’s totally uncosted energy/climate change policy, particularly its plan to mandate that 50 per cent of all new vehicles sales are electric by 2030, up from a tiny 0.1 per cent in 2018. For those who think that will be a good thing, consider a few facts. Electric cars are much dearer, and those at the lower end of the scale have limited driving range. When these cars need recharging it will take up to 16 hours on a home charger or you could try to locate a fast charger such as the ones Labor says it will establish around Australia. Instead of waiting a couple of minutes to refill at a servo, if all goes well you will be plugged in for an hour or two if and when a vacant fast charger becomes available, with many thousands of electric vehicles on the roads. This is what Wheels Magazine reported recently in its Electric Vehicle Megatest - “Driving just four electric vehicles to recharge at one of the country’s best-equipped charging stations was about as simple as taking a bath with a cat. “One of the cars couldn’t even plug in at the world-class station, requiring a slow 17-hour recharge from an up-rated 15-amp power point... A short drive made all the more uncomfortable due to having the aircon switched off to save a few watts..." Great if you are on a trip, with Australia’s vast distances. And where is all the extra electricity going to come from to charge all these vehicles? Coal is a no-no so too bad if it’s cloudy, calm day. Also what is Bill Shorten going to replace fuel excise revenue with? As the ABC reports:“ It is a huge amount of cash. Total fuel excise revenue is about $18 billion a year, or five per cent of total revenue, according to the 2018-'19 federal budget.“ There are so many holes in Labor’s crazy plan you could drive a Mack truck through them - and the Greens are much worse with their call for 100 per cent electric vehicles/100 per cent renewables. EASTER RECYCLE Did you know that the foil wrapping from all the Easter eggs you eat this Easter can be recycled? Aluminium foil is one of the most recyclable of all products. In Australia, it is usually made into more aluminium. The Easter egg foil could become the aluminium in a can of soft drink or an aluminium baseball bat or toy. It is preferable for people to scrunch up their foil into fairly big balls. So, once you’ve eaten your Easter eggs, scrunch them up into a big ball and put the foil into the yellow recycling bin. The best part about scrunching up your wrappings is that no-one will ever know how many Easter eggs you have consumed. Happy Easter and happy recycling. Brigid Muir, Cooroy
WILDLIFE HAVE FEELINGS TOO Today I was humbled and saddened by observing something that takes place each and every day ... At 7.30am I drove south on David Low Way and noticed a bird on the kerbside that seemed to be immobile. On my way back north at 9.30am the same bird was still there in exactly the same position. I turned around to see if it was in distress
Spit. If you have a photo for Lenscape please email to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au. ● and if there was something I could do to help. It was indeed in distress, but beyond my help - it was simply grieving and standing beside the body of its dead partner, obviously hit by a car. Almost as a sentry on guard ... was it hopeful?... protective?... not wanting to say farewell? We may never fully understand the minds of birds but it was a timely reminder that humans aren’t the only species who cherish their loved ones ... and encouragement to be careful when driving not to harm the other inhabits who share our environment. Sharon Ramsay-Luck, Noosa
RESPONSE TO CRITICS “Every publication on renewables describes them as intermittent or the complete opposite of reliable”, writes Peter Bayliss (NT 21/03) in response to my letter stating that renewable energy is more reliable than fossil fuel energy. First, renewables include hydroelectric, geothermal, wave and tidal power, which are clearly not intermittent, so the made-up claim is clearly made up. When I googled “is fossil fuel energy more reliable than renewable energy”, as I hope PB might have done, all the articles on the first two pages, except the one by the oil company, said they were not. I will stand by my statement until alternative evidence is available. Solar and wind energy are intermittent but also reliable because of the advance in
battery technology, of which PB may not be aware. “Intermittent” is not synonymous with “unreliable”, otherwise PB could not have a drink or take a shower if it wasn’t raining. Oh, yes, Elizabeth (NT 21 March), I do have faith in qualified experts. Who do you depend upon; soothsayers, clairvoyants, witch doctors, intuition, personal experience, Facebook, Twitter, your best friend, Fox News, Andrew Bolt? Your most revealing phrase accused me of “trusting the 97 per cent you have read about somewhere,” to do my thinking for me. You are confusing the concepts of collecting information and using it to form opinion. I do trust experts to collect the data and draw conclusions but I read widely and use the breadth of information to form my opinions. You can’t understand the breadth of data on climate research and not come to the conclusion that we urgently need to stop burning fossil fuels. However, you seem to rely on experts to inform you of the dangers of plastic in our environment. On this matter, we fully agree, except that plastics don’t contribute to global warming unless they are burned, releasing their CO2 and toxins. I love John Mikkelsen’s enthusiasm for embracing the newest out-of-the-closet deniers (NT 21 March). 90 per cent of his letter quoted the new kid on the block, Michael Shellenberger, so apparently, he couldn’t have said it better himself. MS is a recent convert to the pro nuclear lobby. Being pronuclear in today’s world is like being pro-colonisation of Mars. It may be achievable one day but not today. Nuclear power is still far too expensive, takes far too long to build and still produces waste products for which no safe, long-term storage has been developed, even after many decades of research. Insurance companies still will not pay out claims involving nuclear accidents. There are lots of people trying to develop solutions to the fact that traditional wind turbines kill birds. They involve radar to detect birds so that turbines can be shut down and new designs that are less lethal to birds. The engineering to solve this problem is far less complex than the engineering needed to safely store nuclear waste. It is true that going fully solar will require a lot of land but that doesn’t mean that more land has to be cleared. We have already attended to that environmental degradation. Those students who attended the strike for more action on global warming are selfish. They just want a better world for themselves and their children and the environment in which we all live. It needs to be a major election issue. Steve Hall, Cooroy

FERRY TICKETS MAY GO DIGITAL Noosa Council will this month discuss cashless ticketing on the Noosa North Shore Ferry along with other possible changes including operation hours and the introduction of a second ferry as the current lease nears its expiry date in June. The ferry which council says is one of the busiest vehicle ferries in Australia with an annual turnover in excess of 300,000 cars has been operated by Noosa North Shore Ferries (NNSF) for the past 20 years with the operators able to extend their lease for a further five years. In the lead up to the lease extension council officers reviewed the service and determined that hours of operation should stay the same, a second ferry would be costly, deliver only limited queuing efficiencies and Council subsiding, and priority slip lanes were not supported. The review also found customers

increasing demand for digital payment services and the need to improve the concession system. The Noosa North Shore and Teewah Beach area contains 253 residential properties and NNSF provides 146 residential and 338

GETTING THE LOWDOWN ON GRANTS FOR COMMUNITY Noosa Council's Grants, Network and Nibble Nights are proving to be a successful springboard for local community groups who are jumping at the chance to secure funding through grants available by local businesses. Cooroy-Noosa Genealogocial and Historical Research Group president John Hartley said the regular event was pivotal in bringing people of the shire together to
access funding and services. He has already set the wheels in motion for a collaboration between his group and the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre, thanks to a meet and greet at the event and subsequent round-table brainstorm. "I'm going to apply for an arts grant on behalf of the Group to do three video documentaries of six minutes each using photography and archives," he said.
"The project will be displayed on the white walls of the Butter Factory as part of Heritage Month next year. This outcome is a direct result of talking to the Butter Factory as part of the Grants Night," Mr Hartley said. Community Development manager Alison Hamblin said more than 100 local community group representatives come along each time.
"Each of the presenters have three minutes to speak about what they can offer, so it's a very fast-paced and informative night," she said. Mr Hartley said the event also allowed locals to chat directly with those offering grants, and get ideas on what they need to do to apply. GIFT HITS THE RIGHT NOTE BY JIM FAGAN Music students at Tewantin Primary have something to sing about. After months of frustrated waiting for a new keyboard, they now have a brand-new Yamaha console digital piano, courtesy of Noosa's community choir Noosa Chorale. The choir is celebrating its 25th birthday this year and, according to president, Gai Ramsay, "We wanted to give something back to the community which has been so supportive of us since we were founded in 1994. "We heard the school needed a new piano and, because our wish is to promote music, especially choir singing, to young people, our singers decided to donate $1500 to buy one." The Grade 6 students were making a beautiful job of the Mamas and Papas hit song California Dreaming when Gai and Chorale singers Fran Wilson and Linda Bishop, a former teacher at the school, visited to view the Yamaha. And, while the students may have been singing about dreaming in California it was clear their music specialist teacher, Geoff Peel, was in his own seventh heaven. "The last piano we had was an old one we'd had for many years. It died just before the end of last year and, as I have a budget which is pretty-well non-existent, there wasn't much I could do to replace it. "Then the Chorale came along with their

Geoff said the piano actually cost $1900. "I went to see Tim Lee who owns Music at Noosa and when he heard I was from the school he gave me a $400 discount." The piano will be used by both the school's senior and junior choirs and for piano lessons. It's very manoeuvrable and we can move it to the concert hall for performances."
Said Geoff: "My main drive is for kids to have fun with music, to come to the music class and feel they can't wait to get there. The piano goes a long way to achieving this." As part of its silver anniversary celebrations, Noosa Chorale will perform Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi's famous Requiem at the Noosa Leisure Centre on Sunday May 26. Cats across the Sunshine Coast are hitting the streets in high-tech cat harnesses, all in the name of environmental science. University of the Sunshine Coast researcher Nicole Galea is kitting out household moggies with harnesses and accelerometers to track how they are behaving once they are outdoors, in a bid to boost wildlife protection efforts. Nicole said domestic cats have long been responsible for preying on native wildlife, and yet many of the Sunshine Coast's estimated 38,600 domestic cats are left outside at night. Nicole, who is studying a Bachelor of Ecology Honours supervised by Dr Christofer Clemente, said the devices could monitor whether a cat was walking, running, hunting or pouncing. "We are studying biomechanics, which is the way the cat is moving, so that we can understand what they are getting up to at night long after we go to bed," she said. "Camera trapping only shows a snippet of what the cats are up to, and human observation can be very difficult, whereas the accelerometer is showing us activities and behaviours that can give us a better idea of how cats are truly impacting the bushland." Volunteer cat owners across the Coast are being asked to use the devices for eight consecutive nights with all data being recorded based on their cat's unique movements. The research will also assess the effectiveness of a cat "bib" designed to restrict a cat's natural hunting movements and give prey a better chance of escaping and data will feed into a national study called Using performance to predict the survival of threatened mammals. ● High-tech cat harness used for environmental science research.

"For men to enjoy their lives in adulthood, and to create a better community, we have to grow and learn from the injustices of the past, not use them as excuses or replicate those who did us wrong. TEDDY SETS SIGHTS ON COSTUMES BY MARGARET MACCOLL Fifteen-year-old costume designer Teddy McRitchie has his future mapped out in front of him and is well on his way to establishing himself in the industry. The Sunshine Beach State High School Year 10 student has won numerous awards since he began designing wearable art four years ago and is already creating costumes for theatre groups in Noosa. "I used to live on Norfolk Island and there was a big costume festival. My mother always entered the wearable art category but never won," Teddy said. "In 2015 when I was 11 I thought I'd make something. I won three awards." Teddy invested his winnings in materials for future competitions and hasn't looked back. It's the scope costumes offer that attracts him to the art form."It's the creativity and the freedom to make anything you want using the body as a blank canvas," he said. Teddy voluntarily creates costumes for Noosa Arts Theatre and Little Seed theatre groups and has been contracted to work for Red Robin Entertainment. Since he began in 2015 he has been 2016 runner up in the Enchanted Forest Student category in the Norfolk Island Wearable Arts competition, 2017 runner up in the One Colour student category at Norfolk Island and in 2018 was both the winner of the Illuminations Under the Sea Norfolk Island Wearable Arts competition and the recipient of the AATFA Encouragement Award for the Immanuel Arts Festival. Last Sunday Teddy entered his wearable art creation, Octopia, an alien creature that seeks revenge on the human race for its destruction of the earth, in the Wearable Arts section of the Body Art Festival at Cooroy and while his work didn't win any awards this time he is not deterred. Teddy has entered designs into the Wearable Art Mandurah Competition in Perth and hopes to travel there in June for the event. PAINTED UP AND ON SHOW BY MARGARET MACCOLL Music teacher Clare Hopper decided to take the opportunity while pregnant to be the subject of body art which fitted perfectly the plans of her friend Corina Wagner to create a goddess artwork of a pregnant woman. "I just was lucky my friend was pregnant," Carina, a Gympie registered nurse and part time body painter, said. The pair joined a tent full of artists and models as well as onlookers and photographers at the Australian Body Art Festival at Cooroy on the weekend. The artists had only five and a half hours on Saturday to create their Other Worldthemed designs while crowds circled the tent watching the finished products unfold. Clare said she had a great time being treated like a queen but "would never do it again". That was not the case with model Doris Li who for the past eight years has been matched with various artists as the subject of their work. Last weekend Bodhi del Mar turned
Doris into an out of this world Geisha. Bodhi said it was a thrill to be pushed out of her artistic comfort zone to produce the artwork which she said was inspired by an album cover. Artist Opal Stone had her designs prepared in miniature on a doll though they "grew over the day", but she almost didn't make the event at all when her model cancelled at the last minute. Luckily her friend Samantha Cloy agreed to step in and found it an "awesome" experience. "It's nice to see all the community coming out," she said. "It's weird to get your photo taken naked - or not really naked." The sole man sporting paint was performer Simon who regarded it as a way of extending his performance abilities while artist Tracy Church, a mother of three sons, said she wanted to engage a male in the event. While body art dominated the first day of the festival the second was reserved for wearable art, special effects and out of this world face painting.. â—?

According to the latest REIQ Queensland Market Monitor, reporting on the December 2018 quarter, Noosa held onto its crown as the turbo-charged house market, delivering an astonishing 11.7 per cent annual median house price growth, to a new high of $739,500. It also remains the most expensive house market in Queensland. But it had a grim December quarter, losing 8.2 per cent, so all eyes are on this market to see how the next few quarters fare. Solid economic fundamentals have positioned many of Queensland's
residential real estate markets for a good year ahead, with steady demand growth forecast due to rising population, improving employment rates and better lending conditions. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said many experts agreed that many of the Sunshine State's property markets were in an enviable position. "Our housing market has proven to be resilient to the headwinds that have slowed the Sydney and Melbourne markets so drastically," Ms Mercorella said. "The last quarter delivered strong growth in many markets, including Greater Brisbane, which grew by 2.3 per cent to $525,000. "The Sunshine Coast stormed home at the end of last year with 6.3 per cent growth in median house prices. This is
extraordinary growth and testament to the enviable lifestyle on offer in this highly desirable part of the world." It also looks like it will be a good year for apartment owners. "Apartment supply has slowed significantly, with only around 5000 apartments due for completion this year, compared with almost 11,000 just a couple of years ago. This means demand will continue to rise and will contribute to meaningful price growth," Ms Mercorella said. "We are increasingly embracing apartment living and so it makes sense that this sector of the market is poised for strong growth in 2019," she said. Census data from 2016 reveals that 228,243 families live in an apartment, unit or townhouse, up by 10.2 per cent
NOOSA’S WEEKLY REAL ESTATE GUIDE
from 2011, according to demographic analysts, about 6.3 per cent of families live in an apartment. Census data also reveals that over the past decade, Queensland's interstate migration grew by a net figure of 11,000 a year, on average. "Queensland offers undeniable affordability and a fantastic climate and this is why our population is growing as residents from the southern states opt for a better lifestyle here," Ms Mercorella said. "Anecdotal evidence from our agents suggests that we are seeing property buyers moving here from interstate, lured by the greater bang-for-buck proposition that is presented by our real estate. "Quite simply, your real estate dollar goes further in Queensland." ●

WHAT’S ON STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL COMES TO NOOSA AT THE J "Every scene promises to be full of glitz and glamour as well as amazing singing and dancing. "What also makes this musical special though is it is filled with humour, which is definitely something you would expect from the 'over the top' scripting that Baz Luhrmann has become renowned for." Adding to the exciting atmosphere, the musical will also feature a live orchestra made up of the college's very own musicians. "Every musical number will be backed by our very talented orchestra selected specifically to support the musical," she said. "The show promises to have something for everyone and we won't be surprised to hear the audience singing along to the classic songs or even dancing in the aisles." Tickets are on sale now through The J website for the four performances from Thursday 23 May to Saturday 25 May including a matinee performance on the Saturday. Tickets are $28 adults and $20 child/concession. ●

Love is in the Air at Good Shepherd Lutheran College as rehearsals are well under way for the College's show piece, Strictly Ballroom The Musical, performing at The J in May. Adapted from Baz Luhrmann's classic Australian movie, the stage will be brought to life through song and dance as well as high heels, big hair, sequins and feathers. Strictly Ballroom The Musical is the inspiring story of a championship ballroom dancer, Scott, who defies all the rules to follow his heart. Combining the story's heart, comedy and drama with high energy dance, eyepopping sets and costumes and classic chart hits including Time After Time and Love is in the Air, this unforgettable production will make your heart soar and your feet want to dance. Good Shepherd Lutheran College musical director Mrs Andrea Donovan said she is excited to be bringing this wellloved story to Noosa. "We can't wait to put on a fantastic show for not just the college community
Shania Oreb and Jez Underwood bring the characters Scott and Fran to life in Strictly Ballroom The Musical. but also for the wider Noosa community," Mrs Donovan said. "The students have been fine tuning
their performances with rehearsals for the show starting before the end of term last year.

WHAT’S ON ONE-ACT PLAYS ATTRACT NATIONAL EXPERIENCE ART WITH THE MASTERS Regional Gallery last week anINTEREST FOR NOOSA ARTS THEATRE Noosa nounced the launch of an inaugural Award-winning Perth playwright Yvette Wall has been announced as a finalist in the 2019 Noosa Arts Theatre National One-Act Playwriting Competition, paving the way for her first interstate production. The grandmother-of-three - who's had 13 of her original one-act plays produced in community theatre in Western Australia since 2014 - is one of three writers shortlisted to take out the competition for her new piece, Little Angels. The play - set in 1966 in a hostel for unmarried pregnant girls run by Catholic nuns - will also be staged in Noosa from July 11 to July 20 with the last week of performances forming part of the Noosa Alive Festival. "Little Angels has four strong female roles and is the darkest piece I've ever written with strong themes of loss, suppression and rebellion," Ms Wall said. This latest nomination follows her play The Broken Slipper which won the Beryl Silvester Award for Best New Writing at Dramafest 2014, Cracked which picked up the Best Original Script prize at the 2015 Hills Festival of Theatre and Looking at the Alps which won Best Produc-
Yvette Wall tion at Norfolk Island Theatre Festival in 2016. A former youth worker who has a Bachelor of Social Science, Ms Wall also works with primary schools, sharing her love of theatre and story, which she believes has the power to heal and inspire all ages. ●
Masterclass Series which will bring eight acclaimed national artists to Noosa to run skills development workshops with local artists. The masterclasses will be limited to a small number of participants and be held every two weeks from May through to August. Gallery Director Michael Brennan said the artists delivering these masterclasses include Archibald Prize winning painter, Sam Leach who in the same year he won the Archibald, also won the Wynne Prize for landscape, becoming only the third artist after William Dobell and Brett Whitely to do so. 2019 Montalto Sculpture Prize winner, Kylie Stillman, is also confirmed. "The Sunshine Coast's own Rowley Drysdale, one of Australian's foremost ceramic artists and founder of Quixotica Art Space in Cooroy, will also share his skills with masterclass participants," Mr Brennan said. "The chance to work alongside artists of this calibre doesn't come around often outside of capital cities."Noosa Regional Gallery Masterclass Series 2019: · Saturday 4 May: The Art and Science of Landscape Painting, with Sam Leach

SPORT TODAY
TIGERS THRASH MAYNE SENSELESS BY JULIEN PITTS The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers have belted Mayne in Brisbane last Saturday to the tune of 119 points and sit unbeaten on top of the Hart Sports QFA Division 1 ladder. Right from the opening minutes it was evident that the Sunshine Coast powerhouse was simply harder, fitter and stronger around the contest as well as being much more skilful in transition. The Rococo Bar & Bistro Noosa Tigers senior coach Adam Bovalino was really pleased with the effort saying it was just a really top effort 'right across the board. The boy's stuck to their structures and didn't lairise and the score looked after itself. I'm really happy with our start to the year and with the Reserves also playing good footy, competition for spots is where you want it. I thought the back six were terrific today setting up so many attacking plays. Just a top all round effort". Noosa had winners all over the ground with Tyler Stack and Mitch Woods racking up tons of possessions from start to finish. Stack finished with a game high 38 touches in the midfield whilst footy manager Woods completely dominated his wing with 33 possessions. Jayden Holt continued his fantastic early season form with 30 touches
whilst the 'rolls- royce' Jai Fitzpatrick wowed the crowd with sublime skill and flair. Young Mac Johnston again impressed in the ruck as he threw himself into contest after contest; whilst the back half were led superbly by skipper Aaron Laskey and the super elusive and dangerous Riley Buntain. Up forward Connor McDonald was again a standout with his forward presence extremely noticeable through the entire afternoon with the impressive teenager Will O'Dwyer and Nick Sutton both bagging five goals for the afternoon. A massive win by the Rococo Bar & Bistro Tigers as they now look forward to a home game against University of Queensland this Saturday from 2pm. The seconds came home with a flash booting six last quarter goals to earn a fantastic win on what was a very entertaining game. Names like Trompf, Wallace, Isles and Winter right in amongst it with new recruit Snowy a standout also. Plenty happening at the Tigers with great $10 meals each Thursday night and don't forget to book your seat to this week's President's Luncheon with Geelong champion and football educator Michael Turner our special guest. Well worth listening too! See you at the footy! Go tigers! Cheers, Pittsy â—?

REMEDIAL MASSAGE & ENERGY HEALING Clint Smith has been a successful Remedial Therapeutic Masseur based in Noosa for over 20 years. He has worked at the Hyatt Coolum Resort, with Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Sports Physio Clinics. Invited and worked for many elite athlete groups i.e. Australian Wallabies, Olympic and Paralympic Swimmers. In more recent years Clint has now included more subtle styles of treatment. He is a gifted practitioner in addressing “challenges we might encounter, tightness in necks, shoulders, lower back/hip pain are common issues. As well as massage, Clint offers the ‘fine tuning’ of Energy Healing, Orion /Chiron Healing, Reiki, and Chakra balancing. Those familiar with the benefits of massage on the physical and mental space can add to that feeling of ‘surrender’. Energy Healing can increase the benefit of massage, by helping the patient acknowledge the tension / stress on a deeper level, often releasing its ‘hold’. Sessions can be tailored to suit each individual’s needs. Often stress and anxiety become a physical tension within the muscular system. Modern New Age writers, scientists, practitioners, even mystics from the past acknowledge stress and tension become almost infused within our cells / physical body.
BY RON LANE To be named the best club in Queensland in your chosen sport is indeed something to be proud of. However to do so for four consecutive years is incredible; and this is, indeed what happened to the Sunshine Coast Martial Arts Club. This came about as a result of their performance at the recent 2019 Queensland Karate State Championships. For these titles the club entered a team of 28 competitors of all ages (children through to veterans) to compete against the best the 18 other clubs in the state had to offer. Competing over two day the events consisted of Kumite (sparring) and Kata (form) and the completion of the tournament saw the team came home with a total of 28 gold,10 silver and 7 bronze. These results saw the club awarded the Best and Fairest Club Shield by the
Queensland Karate Association for the 4th consecutive year. Speaking on behalf of Chief Sensei Bryan Dukas, absent because of family commitments, Sensei Rick Hislop said, "We could not be prouder of our students; their attitude to training and commitment to the ethics of karate (sportsmanship and good manners) has paid dividends' would also like to thank the parents and careers for their support of the young students; their attendance at training and also away at tournaments helps to create a full on family environment. A major contribution to the success of our club." The next major tournament will be the Open Australian Championships to be held in Sydney this weekend; and also at the same time students will contest the Australian Schools Karate Championships. Because of the distance and cost the club will be sending a much smaller team; and we wish them well. â—?
The human body will restore itself more often than not, a good practitioner just helps that process.

THE NON-BIRTHDAY PARTY No, she said. Not having a party, don't want one and you can't make me. Her wish is my command, of course, so we decided to have noosatoday.com.au

the extended family up to our place at Agnes Water. Out of sight, out of mind, maybe we could even buy up the town's supply of candles and have a little birthday cake. But the friends down south evidently didn't get the no party memo. "I'm flying up and you can't stop me," said one lady. "Me too," said another. We soon outgrew our little pad and had to rent a couple more beach bungalows. We surfed, we lolled around and laughed a lot, drank a little good
wine, told outrageous lies, as old people do. We had a ball. And just quietly ticked the box on another good decade.
CALIFORNIA IN THE SPRING Around about the time you're reading this, we'll be settling into our little garden studio home away from home in Laguna Beach, California, en route to adventures in Mexico. We can never touch down in LA

without touching base with old mates, and just to get us excited about our Laguna stay, our friends sent us a couple of snapshots of what the garden looks like after 17 inches of late winter rain. As you'll know if you're old enough to remember the song, it never rains in Southern California, so this blaze of colour is pretty special. Hope it's an omen for a great start to our trip. ●

The huge event village erected at Snapper Rocks may have sat forlorn and lonely all week, but around the corner at Duranbah the World Surf League's 2019 season got off to a cracker of a start. Granted, it wasn't the dreamy kind of start to the tour that we're used to seeing at the Quiksilver Pro - who can forget Julian's barrel at Kirra last year to claim the yellow jersey? - but D-Bah delivered just enough of its powerhouse beachies to get results, and the whole southern Gold Coast was just going off, in and out of the water. Of course, running the entire event at the backup venue took world tour event surfing back about 30 or 40 years to two tents on the beach and an Esky full of water. The workout room in the athletes' enclosure went untouched, and the VIPs never got to appreciate Karen Neilsen's retro bamboo beachhouse design of the hospitality space. But no one I talked to seemed to care, although Tourism and Events Queensland may not have been delighted that the entire focus of the event moved from the southern-most surf break in Queensland to the northern-most one in NSW. Oh well, them's the breaks, literally. What both the men's and women's contests highlighted was the changing of the guard that's been coming for a season or two, but really seems to have kicked in this year. Reigning world champ Steph Gilmore was no match for 17-year-old Caroline Marks from California, while Kelly Slater just can't keep up with the Brazilian stormtroopers who are less than half his age. I'm not suggesting that either of those veterans - with a total of 18 world titles between them - are done and dusted. But for Kelly, in particular, the years are taking their toll. Everything would have to go very, very right for him to win another world tour event, let alone another world title. After two back-to-back shockers, I'm pretty sure a big part of Kelly would want to put his comp boards back in the rack and call it a day, but the fact is he's committed to making a documentary of his final year on tour, and to surf at most of the events. Of course, the wags are having a field day already on what that doco might be called if Kelly goes all year without winning a heat. The best one I heard was "From GOAT to GLOAT" - from greatest of all time to greatest loser of all time. That's almost too cruel to share, but Kelly's got broad shoulders. Off the beach, the WSL banquet rocked The Star casino, Wendy Botha was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame at the Q Hotel, and Ian "Kanga" Cairns launched his biography in front of a packed house at Surf World museum. But the most poignant gathering of the week occurred further down the coast at Spookies Point, Angourie, where many hundreds of surfers farewelled David "Baddy" Treloar, one of our bestloved underground heroes. I was on a mission, driving north to meet another commitment and was unable to be there, but I'm told that it was the most moving tribute since we saw off the great Michael Peterson half a dozen years ago. I wish I could have been in two places at once.

BETWEEN THE FLAGS
RON LANE
BIG SEAS FOR NATIONAL TITLES therefore the intensive first aid training that our young clubbies undergo is now of the utmost importance. And the only way they achieve such high standards is to come under the guidance of the Noosa Coach Lenore Grice and her team of instructors. To this team we say well done. Other juniors to perform well were Finella GibbsBeal winning gold in the ocean swim and Amy Kibbles silver in the beach flags. In the open section Lana Rogers added another gold medal to her tally when she won the prestigious Female Open Belt race and Nick Sloman won the open surf race and the 2km open swim; and in the ladies 2km open surf Kareen Lee of Noosa won silver, Jordan Mercer won the bronze in the ladies open ski.To finish off for the ladies in the u/19s.Electra Outram won the gold on the single ski. Again the Masters made a great contribution in particular the ladies and in the board riding Noosa, with thanks to Christy Quirk and silver medalist Jack Lewis they are starting to move. For the boat section the massive surf made each race lotto and for Noosa it just was not their carnival.
Sunshine Beach performed well and once again their young members were amongst the medals. In the u/15s male champion life saver Thomas Auty won gold and the female surf team won silver; followed by Freya Wilson bronze in the surf race and again in champion lifesaver Lily Gooderham won a silver. And in the u/17 Amelia Rose won bronze. On the single ski u/17 Maxie Moore won the bronze and Ruby Nolan kept up her successes with a bronze in the surf race. In the masters division Allison Johnstone continued the club dominance in the champion life saver by winning the bronze. In the masters swim section Jason "Super" Hooper won the 2km ocean swim and Clare Derrington won silver in the surf race. Once again Sunshine Beach has shown that with the facilities available, a big open beach and big ever changing surf conditions, plus a team of top surf swim coaches, they have the ingredients to produce the best surf teams in the country. The silver medal won by their u/15 female surf team at the titles in tough surf conditions, plus the performance of champion lifesaver competitors is living proof that the above is achievable. Good luck to all ●

FISH ARE SET TO FIRE UP
noosatoday.com.au
ROUND 4
NOOSA AFC vs UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND AFC
2019
With the building swell and heavy rainfall offshore has been very quiet this week. However the fish have had a break and the freshwater run off should have the reefies fired up. The weekend is showing good signs of lighter winds and swell. You can expect to see good catches of sweetlip, pearl perch, snapper and coral trout on Sunshine Reef. With the dirtier water bigger grub tail and paddle tail plastics are the go to and using light jigheads gives a natural fall that snapper love. If bottom fishing there will be strong current so using lighter 20-30lb braids are best for direct contact to your lure. Don't forget the bigger Spanish mackerel are still about and will happily take big baits slow trolled and floated downward. Using bait elastic keeps baits intact when casting pilchard floaters and helps prevent them from twisting lines when bringing them back in. Halls and Sunshine reef will be the go to reefs while there is a moderate swell still running. Out wider we should start seeing the occasional big snapper and jewfish falling for well-presented baits, jigs and plastics in the 7 inch size with lots of scent. The estuary has been the more popular option due to the winds, so aim to have the wind behind you. Flathead and trevally have been the main captures around Dog Beach, Munna Point and Woods Bays with some chopper sized tailor starting to show up as well as Queenfish. Queenies can reach up to a metre with the current line and woods bays two great places to find them. They love a fast paced surface lures like poppers and skipping pencil lures. Fishing heavier leaders of 15-20lb is important for both species as they can rub through lighter leaders during their big jumps they are known for. Be sure to carry a decent landing net and handle both species quickly if intended for release. For flathead and trevally a strip of fresh mullet is a great bait that also appeals to bream. Octopus style hooks give the best presentation for flesh baits due to the wider gape and shorter shank. Mangrove jacks will

be a lot quieter but can still be found around the heavy structure or overhanging cover offered by submerged trees. Have a try around Noosa Marina and along the various jetties and pontoons around Noosa Sound. Casting vibes and hardbodies deep into cover and burning them out can trigger a reaction bite just be sure to run heavy drag and be prepared to work hard to extract these hard fighting fish. Freshwater has certainly quietened down with the recent rains and water temperatures have dropped significantly too. Using a sounder in deeper water will show you the fish and it is important to use lures with a lot of vibration including tail spinners, blades and vibes worked close to the bottom. If hunting for saratoga then subsurface lures will be the better option as the sun rises. Surface lures like frogs and cicadas are best fished slowly so they are easily detected by the big fish. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

When lifesavers from all over Australia gather to contest their National Titles (events that cover all aspects of their work) there are always performances that can only be described as truly outstanding. For this years 2018/19 titles held at Broadbeach and Kirra, such a performance came from two young members of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving First Aid team, Lara Porter and Lilly Tindal. Not only did these two young ladies contest their age group the u/17s, but they also contested the u/19s and the opens. In doing so they won the gold in both the 17s and 19s and silver in the opens; a feat never before achieved. In a lead up to the National Titles Lara and Lilly competed in the same three divisions at both the Branch and State Titles and astounded officials by winning the Gold Medal in all three at both. Then in the u/15 category Joe Glassock and Gilly Goulding of Noosa won the gold. For many seasons the First Aid competition has virtually gone unheralded (definitely not a blue ribbon event) but with the ever increasing crowds flocking to our beaches, accidents requiring lifesavers attention, is definitely on the increase:
