The tragic death of a Narre Warren South man who was allegedly gunned down outside a Prahran nightclub has left the community heartbroken. Tribute messages have been posted on social media for 37-year-old security guard Aaron Khalid Osmani who died in hospital on Sunday 14 April following a drive-by shooting outside Love Machine Nightclub on Malvern Road. Police are investigating if a black Porsche SUV seen leaving the area was related to the incident - which was later found burnt out in Wollert. The sudden death of Mr Osami has shocked friends and family who described him as a "kind, funny and easy going guy." Borche Kajmakoski, who described himself as the co-owner and director of multiple nightclubs in Melbourne on Facebook, said: "No words can explain the pain the families of the victims are suffering right now." "You were always welcoming, always polite and always had a smile on your face every time myself and all other patrons came to the venue," he posted. "You are a man like no other and my condolences go out to your family and friends." Friend Kelly Mills posted: "You were everything to me. I'm broken that you are gone. The last nine years we shared will be cherished." "I'll always love you and you'll always have my heart. I wish your family condolences. You'll always be remembered," she said. Ritchie Vongsykeo posted "As someone who works in the industry, I am saddened to hear about this senseless violence. Sending thoughts and prayers to everyone who was innocently caught up in this." A GoFundMe Page has been set up in memory of Mr Osami which has already raised $8,325. The incident also left a 28-year-old fighting for his life in hospital, while a 50-year-old man and a 29-year-old man both sustained non-life threatening injuries. A 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital

IN BRIEF

‘Send me an angel’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells Barbara considers herself a strong woman, someone who’s worked in business and office management for years. Yet when she was admitted as a compulsory patient into a hospital psychiatric ward, she was left isolated, terrified and bewildered. The South East single mum in her 40s says medical staff didn’t explain to her why this happened, what her rights were nor did they notify her children of her admission. At times she sat in the ward for four days before she was seen by a doctor, she said. “Patients were saying to me: don’t buck up, don’t ask questions or they’ll keep you in here longer or give you medication.” She felt lost, without support, but for the help of an advocate working for Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA). In the role, an advocate visits hospitals and is a voice of support for patients. Barbara described his intervention as like an “angel”. Unfortunately it seems there are not enough of these angels in our mental health system. According to a recent independent review, there needs to be twice as many IMHA advocates to reach every compulsory patient. The horrors started for Barbara when, stalked and threatened by a violent ex-partner, she had “a bit of a breakdown”. She sought help at Casey Hospital in Janu-

ary where she had an epileptic seizure. She was told paramedics were transferring her to The Alfred hospital for a CAT scan. Then to her bewilderment, she was admitted as a compulsory patient into a psychiatric ward. “I don’t know if there was some sort of mistake Weeks later, she visited Narre Warren police station to apply for an intervention order. Upon checking her details, police officers grabbed her, patted her down in the car park and carted her back to Casey Hospital. There, medical staff started to shackle her to a bed and demanded she swallow psychiatric medication. She was told she had been avoiding her medication since released in the community. “’I’m not on any medication,’ I said. “It’s a very weird situation when your whole person and whole mind is being judged incorrectly. “I would rather be in a police cell.” A recent RMIT University review released this month found the IMHA service was doing a sterling job, but was under-resourced. The review is calling for a funding boost to expand the service to an opt-out model for all involuntary mental health patients. IMHA manager Helen Makregiorgos said the service was a “safeguard”.

“You can be held in a locked ward and forced to receive medications, as well as other restrictions like limiting your communication with the world outside. “It’s a daunting prospect to face by yourself. “We support people to learn about their rights and have as much of a say as possible, so they don’t have to undergo unnecessary or unwanted treatment.” Dr Chris Maylea, who led the RMIT review, said several inpatients in Dandenong told how frightening the system could be, and how few the supports. “We identified that services often breached the Mental Health Act and that IMHA helps services to comply with the Act.” The IMHA was introduced by the State Government in 2015 at an annual cost of $2.3 million. Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said the Royal Commission into mental health would give answers to a system that needs repairing. “In the meantime, we will continue to support the Independent Mental Health Advocacy to make sure the views and voices of mental health patients are heard.” Meanwhile, Barbara is lodging a complaint with the Mental Health Complaints Commissioner. She is also submitting to the Royal Commission.

Holiday pain at the petrol bowsers By Brendan Rees With Easter just around the corner, Casey motorists are set to face high petrol prices as they head off on road trips for the long weekend. The average unleaded price in Melbourne over the past week was up 14.8 cents to $153.8c a litre, according to CommSec senior economist Ryan Felsman. "Unleaded petrol prices are set to remain around $1.50 a litre in the near term," he said. Mr Felsman said a jump in international crude oil, continued Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries - Russian production cuts and supply disruptions in Venezuela, Libya and Sudan, had pushed up prices by 40 per cent this year. "The school holidays are underway with the Easter-Anzac Day block of public holidays encouraging most Aussies to take some extended time off," he said. "Those who have hit the road would've noticed that petrol prices have lifted." Feeling the pinch at the bowser has been Berwick furniture removal truck driver Mark Johnson who uses about 600 to 700 litres of premium diesel fuel a week. "Of my turnover fuel would be around about 24 to 27 per cent," he said. Mr Johnson said he would pay as much as $640 to fill his 400-litre tank. "Because I'm using it predominately for highway and removal work I can claim for the diesel excise but it

Cars taken in raid Casey Crime Investigation detectives are investigating a burglary at an automotive workshop in Cranbourne West on Sunday 7 April. Investigators have been told at least three men broke into the Universal Way premises about 6am and allegedly stole two vehicles, including a silver Ford Falcon sedan with registration 1OV8JZ, which is yet to be located. The second vehicle was a black Nissan Skyline, which was recovered on Monday 8 April. Police say no arrests have been made at this stage and are investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au

Thirsty thieves take off with top-shelf liquor Police are appealing for help following the theft of four bottles of liquor from a store in Fountain Gate, Narre Warren on Saturday 13 April. Narre Warren police say the thieves entered First choice Liquor before selecting a litre bottle of Jim Beam and three one-litre bottles of Johnny Walker and leaving the store without paying. Police have released images of people believed to be aged in their twenties and of African appearance who may be able to assist their enquiries. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online at www.crimestoppersvic.gov. auand quote the incident number 190133991.

Truck driver Mark Johnson with his son Mitchell who says fuel prices are ridiculous. would probably be 16 cents a litre, not much. "On road costs, daily road costs, fuel and maintenance is ridiculous," he said. According to Petrolspy.com on Monday 15 April BP Cranbourne South on FrankstonCranbourne Road and 7-Eleven in Cranbourne East on Ballarto Road had unleaded fuel priced at $152.9c a litre, while Woolworths Caltex Berwick on Clyde Road was $153.3c a litre, and Coles Express Narre Warren on Princes Highway, a $156.9c a litre.

RACV manager of vehicle engineering Michael Case advised motorists to top up rather than fill up where possible. "The price cycle is a function of competition, driven by competing fuel stations attempting to undercut each other in order to sell more petrol," he said. "When this discounting reaches an unsustainable level where profit margins are very low or even running at a loss, the fuel price gets driven back up again by some of the retailers."

Police wish to speak with these people.

Mother’s break-in shock By Brendan Rees A Berwick mother says she is feeling "massively shaken" after finding the contents of her car had been rummaged through. "There's a whole heap of things missing from my glove box," Jess-Louise Douglas said. She explained her partner had found her car door open as he was about to leave for work about 6.20am on Friday 12 April. "He told me straight away and I was up and out. I just don't know how I didn't hear it." She said her car, a 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer sedan was parked on the nature strip outside her home in Clendon Street.

"There's a few things missing from the car but I've been told I'm not allowed to touch it until the police come over. "It was locked. My father actually reckons they may have tried to get my car started to try and steal it," she said. She was relieved to find her pram worth about $800 and baby seat still present."Both of them would've woken me. If you try and take a baby seat out you make so much noise." A drink cooler was taken, and possibly some coins, as well as a new box of brake pads that had been opened. "I know I had bank details, as stupid as it was on me in my glove box. I don't know if

they've gone or not. "It's a new estate in Berwick so I didn't expect this." She said adding to her heart ache was that fact she had been up the "whole night stressing" about her brother who had a kidney transplant the day before. "Bloody annoying...you go to work and you earn it." Narre Warren Police are investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Fire relief fund distributes $170,000 to the victims By Jessica Anstice Victorians have dug deep and donated funds to people affected by the Bunyip State Park bushfires. Casey Cardina Foundation (CCF) has worked tirelessly alongside Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund (GERF) fund to raise and distribute more than $170,000 to bushfire victims. Various organisations contributed funding, including Cardinia Shire Council, City of Casey, City of Greater Dandenong, Lakeside Residents Group and the general public. “The Gippsland Emergency Relief fund properly assessed each property in the fire affected areas and determined the amount of funding they would receive based on the impact,” CCF chair Paul Thomas said. “Overall, it’s been an amazing community effort.” Emergency financial support was provided to 29 families in Cardinia who lost homes or property in the Bunyip and Tonimbuk fires.

From left, Casey Cardinia Foundation board member Norm Davidson, City of Casey Cr Wayne Smith, CCF chair Paul Thomas, CCF committee member Kate Lempriere, City of Casey Mayor and CCF committee member Amanda Stapledon and City of Casey CEO Glenn Patterson. “GERF is working closely with Cardinia Council to help local residents who have had their primary place of residence damaged by the recent bushfires, in their recovery process,” GERF president John Mitchell said.

“We know that recovery for families and businesses in a long and demanding process. “The funding support provided by GERF is to provide some financial assistance to families/individuals whilst insurance and govern-

ment claims are being processed.” Melbourne Food and Wine Festival was a generous supporter of this year’s GERD appeal by raising funds at several events. “While we’ve already provided support to many local families in need, the funds raised through this year’s appeal haven’t yet reached the payments GERF has made- so we’re encouraging members of the local community to donate where they can.” Donations can be made at any NAB branch across Australia, via cheque or Paypal, with further details available at gerf.org.au All donations made to GERF are tax deductable. City of Casey made a substantial donation of $20,000 on Wednesday. “Cardinia is one of our neighbours and we felt compelled to reach out and so that’s what we’re doing,” City of Casey Mayor and CCF committee member Amanda Stapledon said. “Our aim is to assist the community to get back on their feet again.”

Roof-top burglars drop in By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne East man has told of his shock after intruders allegedly climbed through his roof and ransacked his home. Adam Messina said he was left devastated when he came home from work on Tuesday 9 April to find his home "turned upside down." According to Mr Messina, the intruders avoided his "massive dog" in the backyard by climbing onto his roof before forcing their way through the manhole. During the raid, he says the bandits stole items of sentimental value including his grandfather's 24 carat gold necklace, rings and watches he had kept from his 21st birthday, as well as jewellery passed down from family generations. "That's the main stuff I'm worried about; other stuff can be replaced," he said. "They went through the whole house, every room, every cupboard, every draw. "(They) flipped up my couch, even took TV remote controls; left the TV hanging on the wall, took a lot of jewellery, lap tops, iPads, Nikon camera with portrait lenses, a lot of power tools." His beloved blue and white Honda motorbike worth about $13,000 was also taken from his garage during the raid. Police spokeswoman Natalie Butler said it's believed two men travelling in a small white hatchback broke into the property about 7.30am. They allegedly stole the motorbike with registration HRC11 which has yet to be located before leaving about 9.10am. According to Mr Messina, CCTV footage from his neighbours captured men in the area walking towards his home between 7.45am and 9am. "They came in through the roof and opened the roller door and the car's been reversed (into

Adam Messina stands where his bike was stolen from his garage. 192533 the garage) on the footage," Mr Messina said. "They've taken the garage remote with them as well." Mr Messina, a concreter, left for work about 6.20am and said the intruders were "extremely brazen" to break-in during daylight. "If I was on night shift I would've been com-

ing home at that time," he said. "I noticed when I pulled in that door was ajar connecting door to the house. "Looks like a four door Corolla in the footage. It's not clear but you can clearly see they've come from Scullin Street and walked straight across the road straight into my house," he said.

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Neighbour Shannon Marchant said she felt unsafe in her home: "We've ended up bolting our manhole up because anyone could just come in now; very scary." Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.

Casey council's 2019/20 budget will not be transparent to ratepayers and residents. Casey Council CEO Glenn Patterson recently agreed to meet with me at Casey following Casey Council's refusal to allow me to know how much our CEO is being paid even though Glenn Patterson is paid by ratepayers as are all senior managers and staff at Casey, and even though the employment contracts of most Victorian municipal CEOs are transparent to local ratepayers and residents. Mr Patterson was made aware by email of my items of interest for discussion. He informed me that under the legislation he doesn't have to tell me his salary or contract. When asked how then Casey's 2019/20 budget will then be transparent Mr Patterson seemed to just shrug his shoulders with indifference. He did claim, however, that his salary is less than his predecessor Mike Tyler. Well then why does it have to be kept secret Mr Patterson? Mr Patterson did also state that his salary will be revealed in Casey's annual report which will not be available until the end of September this year; well after Casey's 2019/20 budget is released. Annual reports are not necessarily transparent because they may not itemise the salary and financial incentives paid to staff and CEOs. Rather annual reports can disguise pay-

Here is how our readers reacted: Suzi Grbesa: The council need to remove the gum trees as well! Their leaves kill lawns and make a mess!!! And the roots lift foundations. It's absolutely ridiculous. You would think after so many years and heaps of complaints that they would do something about this and plant something else instead! Ex-teacher abused boys By Cam Lucadou-Wells A former high school teacher has been jailed over the sexual abuse of six boys at his Harkaway farm more than 45 years ago. Timothy Richardson, 82, was found guilty by a Victorian County Court jury of nine counts of indecent assault against males under 16 and two counts of buggery between 1963-1973. The ex-Dandenong High teacher, then single, assaulted boys aged between 11-15. Two of the victims estimate that Richardson abused them between 80-100 times. All but one of the victims were Dandenong High students. With parental permission, the boys slept over at Richardson's farm. Some had regarded the farm as a "refuge" from their abusive households, sentencing

judge Paul Higham noted. Typically, Richardson would persuade a boy to join him in his single bed in a bungalow, sometimes while other boys slept on the floor in the same room. Judge Paul Higham, in sentencing on 12 April, accepted there was no evidence of Richardson using force or violence but that didn't detract from the seriousness of the crimes. Richardson had taken great care to gain consent from victims "frozen by fear" or feeling they were being given "special attention" by a "respected teacher". Judge Higham noted that a victim fronted the Dandenong High School office to complain to the principal about Richardson doing "dirty things" to him. Tragically for him and Richardson's other victims, he was not listened to. An office staff-

member told him off and ordered him never to speak of the matter again, Judge Higham said. Each victim provided impact statements to the court, writing of how they hid away the events out of shame, guilt and embarrassment. One stated the difficulty of showing affection and trust for loved ones, including their own son. Richardson had grown up in Upper Beaconsfield as an only child. His career spanned 18 schools. In 1984, he married wife Barbara, who died in a car crash 10 years later. He had not offended in the past 45 years - in that time bringing up 60 foster children and three step-children, the court heard. The now "frail" Richardson suffered health problems such as glaucoma, coronary artery disease, osteoarthritis, asthma and hypertension.

After being found guilty by a jury in December, he'd suffered a suspected heart attack. He had shown no remorse, lacking insight into what motivated his "gross abuse of trust" or the impact on the victims, Judge Higham said. The offending was not spontaneous but sustained and predatory over boys at a "most impressionable stage of their emotional and sexual development". "As children they demanded your protection. "Quite simply, you betrayed them. You acted as you did because you wanted to. "You were driven by desire for your own sexual gratification." Richardson was jailed for up to eight years, with a minimum non-parole period of four years, nine months.

Locals step up to fight By Brendan Rees Two Casey women will walk in this year's Mother's Day Classic to raise money for breast cancer, something that is very close to their hearts. After suffering from breast cancer for nearly 10 years, the four-kilometre Mother's Day Classic walk is a huge feat for Sharon who was restricted from doing any physical activity for years. The 68 year-old Clyde North resident has kick started her training regime by doing two kilometre walks with her husband Don to get her ready to join the quest to find a cure for breast cancer. "I asked my two children not to give me a mother's day present but to sponsor me," she said. "I had breast cancer nearly 10 years ago and then last year in August I got breast cancer again - a different type." Sharon, who lives at Lifestyle Berwick Waters, said she was undergoing chemotherapy but found this "really difficult to cope with" and now has Herceptin treatment, a targeted cancer drug every three weeks at Dandenong Hospital. A shocking 48 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day in Australia. This is a stark reality for Jodi Dyer of Lyndhurst who watched her best friend and seven family members suffer from the disease. The 50 year-old is now determined to raise funds for cancer research by participating in numerous charity events. "I've always been an advocate for breast cancer because of the family history but now it's really ripping at my heart with my best friend," she said. "It doesn't matter how old you are you've just got to be aware." Jodi is the operations manager at Lifestyle

Sharon McLean will join residents from Lifestyle Berwick Waters for the Mother’s Day Classic walk. 192598 Communities, a company that has 13 residential communities for over 50s in and around Melbourne. She said all their home owners, team members, families were participating in the walk to

"do the best we can." "This Mother's Day Classic my kids asked what I wanted for mother's day and I said they're doing it with me," Jodi added.

Lifestyle Communities hopes to achieve its single largest group to ever walk with 600 attendees at the Mother's Day Classic which will be held on Sunday 12 May at the Alexandra Gardens, Melbourne.

Teen shock as intruders storm home By Brendan Rees A Narre Warren South teen has been left severely shaken after thugs allegedly broke into his home armed with golf clubs and scissors. Clay Burnell, 16, was watching the footy on TV when he heard a noise coming from the laundry about 9.45pm on Friday 5 April. "He looked around and sure enough there were three Sudanese kids in our living room," said Clay's father Dean Burnell. "They pretty much said 'give us all your stuff'." The intruders demanded cash from Clay which was all his work placement savings, as well as allegedly stealing a computer, laptop, PS4 console and iPads. "They asked him to log out of his phone; logged into his phone so they could get out of iCloud," Mr Burnell said. "They had gloves on; they took all my watches, and rings and passports." He said the intruders were in their home for about seven minutes taking "everything they could get their stinking hands on." "They didn't damage the house as such so they slammed the door on the way out and destroyed that." As soon as they left, Clay ran to his next door neighbour who called police.

It’s not something you expect is going to happen in your own home… - Dean Burnell

Mr Burnell said his family had been left feeling unsafe and was in the process of buying CCTV cameras. "We had 7 News rock up yesterday (15 April). When I came in and opened the door he had like a knife next to him, I said what's with the knife and he said 'Oh just in case they come back'." When asked how the intruders broke in, Mr Burnell said: "I think they may have put their hand up through the doggy door, I'm not 100 per cent sure to be honest." "It's not something you expect is going to happen in your own home." Casey Crime Investigation Unit is investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Pipe damage a stinker By Brendan Rees An elderly woman from Narre Warren South is thousands of dollars out-of-pocket after claiming a nature strip tree caused a sewer pipe blockage to her home. Tony Baratta has declared war on Casey Council on behalf of his mother Maria Baratta over council's failure to compensate her $3,909 for the repair works. Mr Barrata said he hired a plumber to unblock the sewer pipe at his mother's Ormond Road property in February with the hefty bill causing her "unnecessary stress." According to Mr Baratta, the plumber conducted a camera inspection of the pipeline which "clearly showed" it had been "damaged and cracked" due to the intrusion of underground tree roots. He added the plumber's invoice stated: "Tree roots in the drain causing the sewer drain to block up and overflow." Mr Baratta emailed and called Casey Council several times seeking financial compensation which was rejected. "I was told an arborist would be sent to assess the offending tree and determine if we had legitimate cause to lodge a claim," he said. "In summary, his assessment was that the tree was 'healthy' and that a claim form would be sent out for our completion." He said a claim through National Claims Solutions (NCS) had been denied as there was "no evidence to show that tree roots caused the initial damage to the pipes." "Ageing drains inevitably develop cracks and leaks over time, allowing water to escape into the subsoil," a letter from NCS explained. "We do not consider you will succeed in establishing legal liability on the part of Council," the letter said. But Mr Barrata hit back saying their deter-

"NCS has failed to understand that the sewer line is a relatively young installation and one that has not deteriorated over time," he said. "We doubt very much they have left the confines of their offices to assess the site in question, otherwise a more informed and diligent decision would present itself here today." Casey manager of governance Holly de

Kretser said arborists had inspected the tree in question and investigated the matter. "All claims for compensation are independently assessed by Council's claims handler," she said. "Given this relates to a civil action, which may become the subject of future litigation, Council is not in a position to make any further comment." According to Mr Baratta the council had

"It is our opinion that the offending asset is fully owned by the Council," he said. "As the legal and rightful owner of the tree the Council must assume full responsibility for any destructive ramifications of the assets it owns," he said.

FOCUS ON … MEDICALLY SPEAKING

Cardiac care near home Heart disease claims the lives of thousands of Australians each year and that’s why the Heart Foundation is focusing on the importance of physical activity in reducing the prevalence and impact of the disease during its annual Heart Week being held from April 28-May 4. According to the Heart Foundation, cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death, killing one person every 12 minutes and accounting for nearly 30 per cent of all deaths in this country. Largely preventable, heart disease affects one in six Australians with more than one million people aged 30-65 at a high risk of having a heart attack or stroke-many of whom may not even know it. Knowing your individual risks is the first step in avoiding a heart attack or stroke and the best way to find out your overall risk is to see your doctor or health practitioner for a heart health check. While there are some risks that can’t be changed - for example increasing age, being male, ethnic background (Indian sub-continent and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) and family history - there are plenty of risk factors that can be mitigated: smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, being inactive, being overweight, unhealthy diet or depression/isolation. Fortunately for the people of Berwick and surrounding communities, St John of God

Berwick Hospital offers a range of cardiac services and specialises in the management of patients who are experiencing symptoms associated with heart failure. Along with a cardiovascular interventional laboratory, which allows cardiologists to look inside a heart and enables them to diagnose and treat heart conditions, the hospital offers cardiac/high dependency care to patients who have experienced a cardiac event such as a heart attack. The 10-bed high acuity cardiac unit is part of the hospital’s Critical Care Unit which caters to patients who may need to be monitored very closely following major surgery, require the insertion of a stent, pacemaker or internal cardiac defibrillator, or for those who have unexpectedly become very ill. The hospital also provides in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation services which enables it to provide a holistic approach to cardiac care in this region. The hospital has also recently launched a rapid access Chest Pain Clinic which allows quick access to a cardiologist for patients suffering from non-active cardiac symptoms, within 1-2 weeks. A GP referral is required. For emergencies and active chest pain, please call 000. For more information on cardiac care, please contact St John of God Berwick Hospital on 8784 5000.

Double take! Kerryn meets her famous hair-pair idol By Brendan Rees A Narre Warren resident has shared an incredible photo of her and music legend Leo Sayer - with the pair looking identical. Kerryn Cunningham had the opportunity to meet her biggest idol after attending his live show at Bunjil Place on Sunday 14 April. The British rock star was in town with his all-star band for a series of special shows to celebrate his 70th year on Earth. Kerryn hung back after the show to meet Leo - an international chart topping music legend before posing with him in a photo. "I was standing in the queue to get the records and the t-shirt signed," she said. "I said 'they tell me they look like you' and he goes 'yeah you're like my twin'. "He's a really nice gentleman. I was over the moon because this is my idol," Kerryn added. "Everyone I show the photo to they go 'that's amazing'."

Dandenong Dermatology Centre Practice Nurse and Laser Practitioner, Marie Lebrasse now operates as Vitalase Skin and Laser Clinic for Dandenong Dermatology Centre. Marie has been practice Nurse at Dandenong Dermatology Centre since 2001 and over that time has regularly studied, upgraded and updated her nursing and laser skills. Most recently she has achieved her Graduate Diploma of Cosmetic Nursing whilst continuing as our caring Practice Nurse and trusted Laser practitioner. WHAT’S NEW? Anti wrinkle injections: The role of anti wrinkle injections is to relax wrinkle causing muscles, thereby softening and preventing the development of expression lines, creating a smooth and rejuvenated appearance. Wrinkles often appear around the forehead and eyes when we smile or frown and these areas can be treated along with crow’s feet, using a well studied safe medication that suits all skin types, administered only by our qualified medical professional. Skin Needling: Skin needling is a skin rejuvenation treatment that helps stimulate collagen and elastin to promote smoother, healthier skin through a natural healing process. This treatment is suitable for all skin types and is designed to support skin regeneration to help conditions including acne scars, surgical scars/scarring, stretch marks, fine lines, pigmentation, enlarged pores, blackheads and mild textural irregularities and is suitable for treatment during the summer months. Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light: Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light is used to treat conditions related to skin damage and premature aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, redness, acne scars, broken capillaries, pigmentation, melasma, age spots and general photo rejuvenation. Non ablative skin rejuvenation uses radio frequencies to improve the appearance of wrinkles, brown spots and minor scars by creating heat in the skin with out injuring the surface of the skin. The heat generated promotes collagen production which results in tighter, healthier, younger Iooking skin. Treatments are suitable to most skin types. The first consultation is complimentary (free) by appointment only with cosmetic Nurse, Marie Lebrasse@ Vitalase Skin and Laser Clinic at Dandenong Dermatology Centre, 1/110 David Street, Dandenong 3175 Tel: 9791 3455 201808156702_1-DJ35-18

AVIVA REINVENTS RETIREMENT AVIVA Communities has commenced work on what will be a ground breaking residential community for people over 50 at Officer. Managing Director of Aviva Communities Todd Strathdee said the $55million project is all about reinventing retirement and creating a community that is more suited to a young-spirited retiree. “The innovative design of the community and what we are able to offer our homeowners is very different to other options in the market,“ Todd said. Designed by award winning Wolveridge Architects, the homes and clubhouse reflect modern housing styles that are based on the history Officer and embody design practices that optimise liveability for homeowners. “All living spaces are oriented to the

north and achieve a minimum six star energy rating,“ said Todd. “Genuine master-planning means that every home has private open spaces that are achieved without tracts of imposing fences.“ All homes at Aviva Officer come with access to a stunning clubhouse known as The Lodge. The Lodge design reflects the brick kilns and timber mills that were the foundations of enterprise in Officer. With statuesque brick chimneys punctuating stunning timber facades, The Lodge will be home to a range of amenities that support an active social and physical life. Whilst the community is outstanding in its design credentials, affordability was one of the most important considerations in its creation. “People living in retirement have fixed incomes and worry about how far their

money will go. We have invested a lot of time in developing ways to provide our homeowners with financial certainty and a greater level of control over their cost of living,“ explained Todd. “At Aviva Communities Officer we are able to offer our homeowners financial peace of mind by rethinking the traditional way these communities work. One example of this is managing electricity costs through a market-leading energy system." Located on McMullen Road, Aviva Communities Officer is within walking distance of the future planned Officer Town Centre. Aviva Officer will be launched in mid 2019. "Congratulations to co-ordinator Jimmy Seeary, and his team at Operation Newstart Casey, for their incredible dedication to the well-being of these young people." ventional engine with similar performance. Inside the new 3, the dashboard is low, with an 8.8-inch display nested in a crevice above the centre console. Secondary switches are sparse, with only a handful surrounding the gear lever. Meanwhile, climate controls are grouped in the centre of the dashboard. A newly available driver-attention monitoring system uses infrared to watch the driver and to sound an alert if it detects wandering eyes looking away from the road. Additional electronic driver aids include front cross traffic alert and a traffic jam assist with steering function. In recent years, brands such as Mazda have been pushing the design envelope for nonpremium cars. And the next generation Mazda 3 is no exception. Underpinning the new car is the SkyActivVehicle Architecture, Mazda's latest modular platform which makes its own debut in the next generation 3. The platform is said to offer improved dynamic performance compared to Mazda's current design, as well as a quieter, comfier and a more refined ride. The platform also integrates Mazda's new SkyActiv-X engine which promises diesel-like fuel economy but with the cleaner emissions of gas engines. The engine features what Mazda calls 'spark-controlled combustion ignition technology,' and is said to be capable of returning 20 to 30 per cent better mileage than a con-

Gavin Sheedy, the owner of Autobarn Narre Warren, has been relying on the Berwick Star News to get his message out to customers for nearly 20 years. Autobarn Narre Warren’s recent Show and Shine event was an outstanding success thanks in part to pre-event advertising in the News. Mr Sheedy said the Berwick News was a great vehicle for directly reaching customers in Berwick and surrounding areas. “I am proud of our long association with the Berwick News. It is a great local paper that works for us.” 12416526-LB17-19

Brigade’s big birthday bash Narre Warren North fire brigade has achieved a milestone of 75 years serving its community. It was 11 February 1945 when residents banded together to form the brigade with donations exceeding 20 pounds at its first meeting. Members past and presented gathered on Saturday 6 April for a ceremony where captain Mark Dobrich and past captain Ivan Smith cut a celebratory cake to mark the occasion. Commander Arthur Haynes addressed attendees saying a lot had changed but the volunteers' passion in serving the community had lived on. "In the early 1960s the brigade started looking for a site, as we had equipment in several farms around the district," he said. "The fire truck needed to be more accessible, also the siren was located on private property." "Len Sonogon donated half an acre of land to the brigade in 1963. The brigade some years later built the first stage of the fire station with the assistance of a small contribution from CFA.

"The major fundraising activity was an annual bonfire night, five dollars all you can eat and drink. "After the first year, the system had to change due to the amount of alcohol being consumed. All the profits were being drunk," Mr Haynes said. He said the brigade purchased their own "old brick" truck in 1972 which had a 1000 gallon tank fitted with a high capacity pump and a large German monitor. "Operationally the brigade has experienced a number of major fires within the boundaries of Narre Warren North," he said. This included a Churchill Park fire in 1972, and a man who decided to burn a bush around the end of King Road in Harkaway in 1975, he said. The brigade also assisted in the Black Saturday fire 10 years ago where seven homes were destroyed and several others severely damaged in Narre Warren South.

After three premierships in four years, Berwick are enjoying their most successful era. 185297 Picture: ROB CAREW

Berwick’s belter Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

- two premierships in two years. Not only is the former Noble Park champion blessed with an incredible squad, but he's a forward thinker, a modern day coach with an incredible tactical nous. The foundations are set, and as the club embarks on a new era in AFL Outer East, it seems the Wickers show no signs of slowing down. Turn to sport for more about a golden day for the Wickers in the final ever grand final of the South East Football Netball League.

NEWS

A total of 895 parking sensors have been installed at Bunjil Place.

Parking at your fingertips By Brendan Rees Casey Council has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on parking sensors in the Bunjil Place precinct which will help visitors to find a carpark using their mobile phones. Council installed the final batch of parking sensors at a cost of about $300,000, providing real time information on parking through a cloud-based service, collected by sensors located in the ground. The sensors send data to smart phone apps and traffic signs to help guide visitors to an available parking space. It comes after the completion of the new carpark late last year with a total of 895 sensors

having been installed. Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said since the installation of the parking sensors the benefits had been significant. "This has included the ability to manage parking demand, to ensure fair access to short-stay parking spaces is prioritised and a reduction in traffic congestion often caused by cars circling for a park," she said. "Visitors are able to identify available parking spaces at just the touch of a button with Bunjil Place, Casey ARC and part of Fountain Gate's parking all integrated within the Smart Parking App. Casey manager of safer communities Caroline Bell said council did not condone anyone

using the Smart Parking App while driving, adding "this is not the way the app is intended to be used." "Visitors are encouraged to use the app prior to departure to the precinct to help determine available parking and parking restrictions," she said. "Upon arrival, wayfinding signage has been installed to further assist drivers, indicating the number of available parking bays nearby, including for the disabled." Casey Highway Patrol Sergeant Pat McGavigan said drivers must concentrate while behind the wheel as mobile phone distraction was one the biggest contributors to road trauma.

"Drivers must be aware that it is an offence to use a mobile phone while driving and it will be enforced," he said. "If you take your eyes off the road especially in the vicinity of a car park who's to say pedestrians are not going to step out between cars," Sgt McGavigan said. "We'll take appropriate action where we detect people doing the wrong thing." The penalty for using a phone while driving is a $484 fine and four demerit points. More than 85 additional carparks have been made available within the new carpark, bringing the total capacity of this space to 259, incorporating 181 parks with a two/three-hour limit and 58 all day car parks.

Brandon Polk helped lead Casey past Hawthorn. 192497 Pictures: ROB CAREW

Raheem Lemons posted yet another doubledouble on Saturday night.

Ben Louis did a bit of everything for the Cavs.

Cavs fire on all cylinders By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers' Big V basketball teams continue to torch their opponents, with all four teams scoring notable wins over the weekend. The Championship men scored a hardfought win over Hawthorn at home on Saturday, coming from behind win a brilliant last quarter to win 90-81. Trailing by three points heading into the fourth term, Casey lifted its defence to hold Hawthorn to just 11 points in the final frame, while scoring 23 of their own. With the Magic leading 76-71 with 7:22 on the clock, the Cavs reeled off a stunning 19-5

run as Brandon Polk (14 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists), Raheem Lemons (17 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists) and Matt Donlan (21 points and 7 rebounds) caught fire. The win sees Casey (5-1) sit second on the ladder. The Championship women, meanwhile, were a class above Bulleen as they pressured the Boomers into 27 turnovers, which resulted in 25 points for the Cavs. Tanarly Hood (23 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals) continued her fine form, while Sarah Halejian (14 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals) almost posted a triple-

double in a terrific performance as Casey ran out massive 35-point winners, 90-55. The Cavs boast a 4-1 record and sit third on the ladder. The Youth League 1 men chalked up another win, this time defeating Bendigo at home on Saturday night. The Cavs were sloppy with the ball, committing 28 turnovers, but by out-rebounding their opponents by 15, were able to gain control of the game and post a win, 77-62. Blake Taylor (15 points and 10 rebounds) and Jordan Gooiker (14 points) led the way for Casey, who now sit second the ladder with a

6-1 record. The Youth League 1 women made light work of Geelong on the road on Saturday night, claiming a commanding 86-61 win. Bec Peacock (20 points and 5 rebounds) top-scored for Casey, while Lauren Tuplin (14 points and 5 assists), Tess Young (11 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists) and Kim Shankland (12 points and 5 rebounds) shared the load on both ends of the court. The Cavs (4-2) sit second on the ladder. There is no Big V action this weekend, with all four teams returning to the court the following week.

Doves draw level with City as FFV race heats right up By Nick Creely FFV STATE LEAGUE SOCCER REVIEW - ROUND 4 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH-EAST The Casey Comets have been unable to keep their momentum going, going down 0-1 to Eltham Redbacks FC at Comets Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Redbacks were the better side from the outset, but the Comets fought hard - particularly in their defensive half to stay in the match.

Doveton SC drew 3-3 with Malvern City at Waratah Reserve, despite being down at halftime. Disappointingly for the Doves, they couldn't capitalise after scoring a goal in the opening minutes, going into the main break with a 2-1 deficit. A penalty gave City the best possible start to the second half and a 3-1 lead to go with it, but the Doves found the back of the net only minutes later before Josh Frame found the equaliser in the 89th minute.

STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH-EAST Berwick City suffered its first loss of the 2019 season, going down 1-2 to Brandon Park at home on Saturday afternoon. Both sides were even at half time 1-1, but the visitors found the match-winning goal in the second half to hold on and claim the points. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Pakenham United would be rueing missed opportunities after going down 0-2 at home to

Somerville on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles found goals in the first half and the second, with United unable to find any real momentum on their home pitch. In other matches, Old Mentonians gave Hampton Park United a hiding, with a 7-1 win in Keysborough, Tullamarine and White Star Dandenong drew 1-1, Aspendale defeated Rosebud 3-1, Knox United were a class above Bunyip 7-2, while Endeavour Hills Fire had a good weekend with a 5-2 win against Casey Panthers.

The alliance of Team 11 Pty Ltd, the City of Greater Dandenong, City of Casey and Cardinia Shire councils - supported by nine surrounding municipalities and more than 50 grassroots football clubs - remains 100 per cent committed to the A-League/W-League bid that commenced in May 2017. This commitment includes: The retention of Team 11 Pty Ltd, with the ongoing support of shareholders Gerry Ryan, Ghadir Razuki, 34 STAR NEWS

RMBL Investments, Intrapac Property, Pellicano Group and a local consortium; the City of Greater Dandenong continuing its planning and advocacy for the development of a rectangular sports and entertainment stadium next to Dandenong train station; the City of Casey continuing its planning and advocacy for the development of a football centre of excellence at Casey Fields, which would complement the community football facility currently being built; and Matt Windley continuing in his role as Team 11 Project Officer, working alongside fellow Project Team members Paul Kearsley and Emma Michie.

Team 11 has informed members of the New Leagues Working Group and the National Second Division Working Group of its intention to continue to lobby for an A-League/W-League licence and learn more about plans for the creation of a National Second Division. All involved with the Team 11 bid were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and disappointment from members of the southeast Victorian community in the wake of Football Federation Australia’s decision to award A-League licences elsewhere in December. This support - coupled with the bid’s unwavering belief that this booming, multicul-

tural population of more than 1.7 million is capable of growing what could become Australia’s biggest football club - was crucial in convincing all involved to keep the bid going. Team 11 will also continue to be an unashamed advocate for infrastructure development and activity in the south-east as the region continues to be overlooked in favour of others by key decision-makers. Further announcements, including the undertaking of a community-led rebranding process, will be made in due course. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Casey bounces right back By Hayley Wildes

Casey's Declan Keilty and North Melbourne's Mitch Rodd battle for the mark. 192540

Stingrays, Power fall short By Hayley Wildes The battle for finals positioning in the NAB League girls competition is well and truly on the line as the business end of the season rolls around, and the Dandenong Stingrays were unable to score what would've been a vital win over the Bendigo Pioneers on Sunday afternoon. Heading into Round 6 with three wins and sitting fourth on the ladder, Dandenong faced a Bendigo team also on three wins. Shaneece Stratton got the Rays on the board 10 minutes into the first quarter and at the first break, Dandenong trailed by just one goal. Despite their best efforts, Dandenong couldn't convert multiple chances in the third quarter and their fine work up the ground went unrewarded. Still, with a quarter to play, the Rays were just 10 points adrift and well within striking distance. Unfortunately for the Rays, they were unable to make the most of their forays forward as the Pioneers' defence stood tall all day and held the Rays to just one goal for the day. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Eventually, the Pioneers recorded an 18-point win, 4.4 (28) to 1.4 (10). Zoe Hill, Grace Hodder and Jemma Radford were best for the Rays, who fell to seventh position on the ladder and face an uphill battle to make finals with three rounds remaining. Meanwhile, the Gippsland Power were unable to register their first win of the 2019 NAB League girls season. Taking on the Northern Knights, who sit second on the ladder, the Power put up a strong fight but couldn't find their way through the stifling defence that the Knights put up. The likes of Grace McRae, Chandra Abrahams and Megan Fitzsimon battled hard for Gippsland, but it wasn't enough as the Knights ran out 45-point winners, 10.7 (67) to 3.4 (22). The Power will be looking to record their maiden win of the season against the Greater Western Victoria Rebels (1-5) in Round 7 on Saturday 27 April at Shepley Oval from 1:45pm. The Rays will also be in action at Shepley Oval on April 27, taking on the Sandringham Dragons from 1pm.

After a poor VFL Round 1 performance against Box Hill, the Casey Demons responded emphatically on Saturday afternoon, demolishing North Melbourne by 54 points at Casey Fields. The win was set up by a dominant first quarter as the Demons slammed on six goals and kept the Kangaroos scoreless. Tim Smith booted the first two goals of the game, before Jeff Garlett soccered through another to have Casey leading 3.3 (21) to 0.0 (0) halfway through the quarter. With Garlett applying intense pressure in the forward half, the Kangaroos were turning the ball over and the Casey forwards feasted on those mistakes. The second quarter was more of the same as Casey continued to put goals on the scoreboard and after Oskar Baker slotted the last two majors of the half, Casey entered the main break with a massive lead, 10.9 (69) to 2.3 (15). Clearly not content, the Demons were even more dangerous around goal in the third term as they put the contest to bed with a sevengoal to two quarter. The likes of Garlett, Baker, skipper Mitch White and Jaxon Briggs were impressive in the forward fifty as the Kangaroos defence just couldn't contain the direct and free-flowing entries that were coming in thick and fast. With a quarter to play, Casey held an 83-point lead, 17.10 (112) to 4.5 (29). While the forward line was operating superbly, the work down back from Harrison Petty and Declan Keilty was just as important, ensuring North Melbourne's forwards were never able to get into the game. With the game all but over, Casey took the foot off the gas in the final term and North Melbourne was able to put some respectability on the scoreboard. A six-goal to one term for the Kangaroos saw the Demons run out 54-point winners, 18.11 (119) to 10.5 (65). Despite North Melbourne trimming the deficit significantly in the final term, it was a commanding response from Casey as they rediscovered their pressure and defensive tenacity that led them to last year's grand final. There's no doubt that when the Demons are able to play their brand of footy, they are an incredibly tough team to beat and this performance should be the benchmark going forward. It was a strong team performance from the Demons, with an array of terrific players across the ground. The forward line was led by Jeff Garlett (18 disposals and three goals), who was involved in everything, along with Mitch White and Jaxon Briggs (three goals each). Harrison Petty, Mitch Gent (21 disposals) and Declan Keilty were also impressive as the Demons bounced back from a 62-point defeat at the hands of the Hawks last week. For North Melbourne, Tom Campbell, Kyron Hayden and Nicholas Rippon were best in a tough day at the office. Casey has a bye in Round 3 and will return to action in Round 4 in what should be a great contest when they take on Richmond at Casey Fields from 2pm on Saturday, 27 April.

Revitalised Eagles soar OUTER EAST FOOTBALL REVIEW - ROUND 1 PREMIER DIVISION One thing that's certain in a season of genuine unknowns is that Cranbourne's energy and flair from its young list will make any opposition quiver. They run hard, take the game on, and never flinch in the contest, and while it's likely there will be fluctuations throughout 2019, it really is the dawning of a new era down at Casey Fields. With the ball living in Beacy's front half in the opening 15 minutes, new recruit Jack Harmes made an almighty statement early, reeling in a contested mark before his rapid pressure brought about the first two goals of the match, and while Cranbourne were under the pump and looking for a way to spring off half-back, crucially, the visitors couldn't quite make them pay. Despite Beaconsfield's dominance around the ball and methodical movement of the footy, their ascendancy wasn't rubber stamped, and a late fightback sparked by some class from Ryan Jones and a willingness to take the game on saw them cut the margin to a manageable 23-points at quarter time. But that's where the visitors' dominance truly ended - in fact, they looked largely flat from thereafter. From what posed as a potential blowout against a youthful looking Cranbourne side had quickly become an excellent showing, particularly from its younger brigade. Run and spread across the vast wings had the home side up and about in the second term, with a couple of quick majors pegging the margin back to within touching distance, and when young gun Kyle Nunn kicked an absolute cracker from the pocket, it became obvious that they were running them off their feet. At the major break, they had reeled in the deficit and snared the lead. But it was their third term that was the most impressive of the day. Once again, the willingness of the likes of Nunn, Bailey Buntine, Luca Bellinvia, Dylan Cavalot, and the usual suspects in Ryan Jones, Anthony Vella and Luke Bee-Hugo, came to the fore, halting Beaconsfield's run and creating havoc around the ground. Running out eventual 21-point winners, 13.10 (88) to 9.13 (67), Cranbourne coach Stephen O'Brien was really pleased with the side's ability to respond after a poor first quarter. "We had a few concerns there early, they really did come out firing," he said. "They're a pretty quick team, and if you allow them to be able to run the ball like that, they're going to hurt you. "We had to address that pretty quickly, which we did, and credit to the guys and we got it back on even terms after that." Despite conceding 10 scoring shots in the first term, O'Brien praised his defensive group for holding firm, with Glenn Osborne, Brandon Osborne, Dillan Bass and Jordan Bertrand all putting in mature performances down back. "They're a good back six, the majority of them where from last year and a couple of new inclusions, but we've got some wonderful players down there, and they held up under a heap of pressure," he said. "That was pretty pleasing." With youngsters such as Bailey Buntine, Luca Bellinvia, Cameron Angus, and a number of others showing some tremendous signs, O'Brien heaped praise on both Kyle Nunn and Corey Ellison, who stood up and really got their side going with some dynamic moments. "Both are young kids, and have a lot of potential - last year was kind of the beginning of

A pumped up Cooper Sheppard celebrates a goal for Pakenham. 192494 the plan, we knew we had to start blooding some of these guys who probably weren't getting opportunities previous to that because there's been a lot of guys that have done it for the club for so long," he said. "We started last year, and we did lose a lot of those guys that we blooded, but those two guys stuck around, and we're hoping to see more of them throughout the year." Wandin, and Berwick, meanwhile, the two premiers of their respective leagues in 2018, put on an absolute show, combining for an astonishing 41 goals on the way to a combined 272-point match. Dubbed by several as one of the 'great games of local football in memory' the Dogs and Wickers were virtually neck-and-neck in a seesawing shootout where both wanted to show who's really the new big boss of the competition, but in the end, the men from the Kennel emerged victorious in a statement that simply can't be ignored. Obvious right from the opening bounce, the Doggies and Wickers both looked to relish the contest. In an opening quarter where little separated the two clubs, the home side

held a slender five-point lead, before the Wickers - largely sparked by the brilliance of Harry Money (five goals) once again - wrestled back the momentum at half-time to snatch back the lead. What it meant to secure the vital opening round points was evident, with a passionate melee at the half time siren after big man and best afield Daniel Gorringe slotted his third in what loomed as a match-winning debut for the club. The smaller dimensions of the ground seemed to really play to the advantage of the Dogs, with Nick Adam's side playing the ground perfectly, not allowing the Wickers' usual spring and space off half-back to have any real impact, with the loss of Bryce Rutherford and Luke Sheppard to long-term injuries causing some concern. Another dominant quarter from the former Gold Coast and Carlton ruckman Gorringe saw the Dogs surge ahead in the third, grabbing a 14-point lead heading into the final term, with the speed and class of some of their prime movers starting to take real toll with the deft touches in the ruck by the big man and his

marking prowess in attack a real highlight. Despite the Wickers surging hard in a stunning, combined 12-goal term, the Doggies held firm in the vital moments to record the brilliant victory, 22.9 (141) to 19.17 (131). The home side were superbly served by Gorringe, who slotted six in a dynamic display playing both ruck and forward to be the clear best afield, while the speed of Patrick Bruzzese and Harry Byrne, as well as great supporting roles from Justin Van Unen (two goals), John Ladner and Clinton Johnston (three goals) caused headaches for Rhys Nisbet's side. In the other Premier matches, a youthful Olinda Ferny Creek were blown away by Narre Warren in the first term at home to go down by 57-points, 10.10 (70) to 19.13 (127), while Upwey Tecoma were just far too strong for Healesville, 5.13 (43) to 14.18 (102), with the Tigers getting their season off to a brilliant start. Woori Yallock had the bye. DIVISION 1 It's always a sign that things are going well when a club acknowledges after a 79-point win that there's still so much work to be done and improvement to come. While Pakenham's thrashing of Emerald under lights at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday night to kick start their new beginning in AFL Outer East was by no means flawless, it was a sign that the Lions are going to be a side hard to stop if they can put all the pieces together and gel cohesively with their extremely youthful looking side. The Lions ran rampant over the Bombers to register 26 scoring shots to just seven, holding the Bombers to just a goal in each half and once again showcasing their stingiest in defence in the eventual win, 14.12 (96) to 2.5 (17). "Over the last two years, we've really struggled to kick a winning score basically, or around the 100 points," Pakenham coach Ash Green said of the performance. "Ultimately, if you can get around 100 points, it puts you in a strong position to win games of footy. "So I was really pleased with our effort - we had multiple scoring opportunities and multiple goal kickers which is good, but we've got some serious work to do. "The positives are, it was our first win in Round 1 in three years, and obviously a lot of people are interested in the new league with the new clubs, so it certainly builds some excitement and expectation. "But we're under no illusions, it's a work in progress with a young team, and we've got to keep working and making sure we're improving every week. "We'll improve as the year goes on, and we just have to be ahead of the curve." Green said that despite picking up the massive win, there are still so many unknowns with the new league, and won't read too much into the result, just yet. "We're still understanding the league as well, and when we start to play these new teams week-to-week, the main players, and strengths and weaknesses, it will just continue to be a work in progress," he said. The Lions were well served in attack by James Harrison, Jake Thompson and Joe Baker-Thomas, who combined for seven goals, but pleasingly had 10 individual goal kickers, with Jack Kowarzik, Tyler Guan and Jarrod Theisz also extremely impressive. In other matches across the weekend, Monbulk got its season off to a strong start with a 33-point win against Belgrave, 6.6 (42) to 10.15 (75), while Mt Evelyn spanked Warburton Millgrove at home on Sunday, 17.21 (123) to 5.9 (39). Doveton and Officer will cap off the opening round with a Good Friday blockbuster at AJ Robinson Reserve. 12415883-FA16-19

Brutal win for the Burras By Hayley Wildes MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 2 Devon Meadows moved to 2-1 on the season after a hard-fought win over Crib Point at Glover Reserve, 9.14 (68) to 9.3 (57). Inaccurate kicking almost cost the Panthers, but Michael Theodoridis (three goals) and Leigh Craig (two goals) kept the scoreboard ticking over, while Joel Hillis and Simon Hallsworth were impressive across the ground. Pearcedale was absolutely slaughtered by Red Hill as the Panthers were held scoreless in the first half to trail by 71 points at the main break. It didn't get any better after half-time either as Harry Wynn-Pope and Jonathon Ross (five goals) led Red Hill to a massive 154-point win, 24.25 (169) to 2.3 (15). The Panthers didn't have many winners across the ground in a disastrous day. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 2 Keysborough showed no mercy against a hapless Heatherton outfit to remain undefeated. The Burras kept Heatherton goalless in the first half and a nine-goal to zero final quarter saw Keysborough storm home to a massive 127-point win, 23.18 (156) to 4.5 (29). Chris Bryan and Matthew Carnelley (five goals each) were superb up forward, while Bryce Sutton and Tamas Siposs were unstoppable across the ground. Doveton was a class above Caulfield as the Eagles took control of that contest after quarter time. Doveton's seven-goal to three third term saw them jump out to a convincing lead and with Nicholas Beer and Nick Battle roaming freely, the Eagles ran out 19.20 (134) to 10.4 (64) winners. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 2

Joel Hillis has been in blistering early season form for Devon Meadows. 192338 Hampton Park made it two wins from two games to kick off season 2019, taking care of Endeavour Hills at Barry Simon Reserve. In a tight and see-sawing battle, the lead changed hands often, but when it mattered most, the Redbacks were able to get the job done to score a win, 12.13 (85) to 11.8 (74). Peter Dye (four goals) was a massive presence up forward, while Phillip Nanfra and Cameron Williamson were impressive for Hampton Park. Jarrod Marolla and Alexander Cann were best for Endeavour Hills. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 2 After breaking their 595-day losing streak in Round 1, Hallam continued on their merry

way against Lyndale at Barry Powell Reserve. Clearly loving life in Division 4, the Hawks demolished the Pumas as they got off to rampaging start with an 11-goal to zero first half. Leading by 72 points at the main break, Hallam wasn't content as Jack Sharlassian (six goals) and Rory McIvor (five goals) continued to pile on the pain up forward. Eventually, the Hawks ran out 130-point winners, 25.16 (166) to 5.6 (36). Dion Cavallo and Joel Danilo were also impressive for the Hawks, while Lyndale was led by Kenneth Smart and Hayden Laszlo. Lyndhurst fell agonisingly short of Moorabbin at home. The Lightning almost got over the line, but the Kangaroos hung on for a thrilling

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS one-point win, 10.9 (69) to 10.8 (68). Hamish Browning (four goals) was a force up forward for Lyndhurst, while David Ford and Jason Twite battled hard all day. WEST GIPPSLAND FOOTBALL NETBALL ROUND 3 Tooradin-Dalmore made light work Kilcunda Bass in a complete domination. Leading by 51 points at half-time, the Seagulls showed no mercy in the second half as they piled on 13 goals to one, with Andrew Dean (eight goals) and Nicholas Lang (six goals) running amok up forward. Brad Butler was best afield as Tooradin ran out 23.15 (153) to 3.7 (25) winners.
