Narre Warren North residents are preparing to fight plans for a mosque proposed for their township. The Saarban Islamic Trust has submitted plans to Casey Council for a mosque at 365 -367 Belgrave-Hallam Road, Narre Warren North, but residents have cited concerns of traffic, and the building impacting their "picturesque township". The plan consists of a main mosque building featuring an open prayer hall, and an ancillary building which would provide a recreational space, a meeting area and office for the Imam. It's also proposed to provide 226 car spaces, and cater up to 372 patrons with large numbers expected to gather during Friday afternoon prayer, festivals and special events. Neighbour Terry Ryan who has lived in the area for more than 20 years, says the mosque was inappropriate and "we'll do anything we can to stop it". "I just don't want to live next to a volume of block of buildings," he said. "It's also not a building for the locals, it doesn't enhance the foothills, the list goes on and on." "The next question everybody asks me 'what you would do if it was a Catholic church or a Coles supermarket?' And the answer is it could be a cathedral or a Coles - I don't care, don't want it," he said. "We bought the property out there for a rural lifestyle." Mr Ryan also expressed his concern about the hours of prayer operation proposed to start at 4am during summer. The plans come after Council knocked back a previous application to develop a place of worship, on a "number of grounds" and following an objection by VicRoads. Cr Rosalie Crestani said about 300 people had already objected to the renewed plans with concerns it would be inappropriately placed within a green wedge semi-rural zone. Other concerns, she said, were traffic and safety issues, and also the social and cultural impact to an "otherwise quiet and picturesque

PM pops in with cash By Nick Creely Prime Minister Scott Morrison joined La Trobe MP Jason Wood for a surprise visit to Berwick and Pakenham on Monday 22 April to engage with culturally diverse communities and make several key multicultural announcements. With the 18 May Federal Election looming, the pressure is on Mr Wood to retain his marginal seat, with ALP candidate Simon Curtis the pre-poll favourite with bookies. The Prime Minister also visited the region on 21 March to announce a $70 million overhaul of Racecourse Road. On Monday, Mr Morrison and Mr Wood visited the Berwick Buddhist Temple to announce that a re-elected Morrison Government will provide $280,000 to complete the Berwick Buddhist Temple Multicultural Education and Resource Centre, which is in addition to the previous $500,000 investment from the Federal government. "This funding will deliver a separate building that will be used to deliver key language support programs to help migrant communities integrate into their new life in Australia better," Mr Wood said. "It is easy to take for granted the impact that language skills have on an individual's sense of comfort and belonging. "If you've never learned a language, or lived overseas without local language skills - you will struggle to understand how much your ability to speak the local language impacts everything you do. It helps you catch public transport, buy groceries, pay bills, enrol your kids in classes and programs and speak to teachers at school." Mr Morrison also announced a $10 million investment to create a dedicated network of Aged Care System Navigators to assist people from culturally diverse backgrounds, and a further $5 million investment into a dedicated Accelerator Support Program to assist

Prime Minister Scott Morrison joined La Trobe MP Jason Wood at the Berwick Buddhist Temple to announce funding for key language support programs. first generation migrants looking to develop a start-up business. The pair also paid their respect to the victims of the terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, which has claimed almost 300 lives (including two Australians) by observing a minute's silence and spending time with the community. "It was both a day of sadness and celebration when we were out at the Berwick Buddhist Temple," Mr Morrison said during a visit to the Pakenham Football Netball Club shortly after. "As we know, there were the terrible events
that occurred in Sri Lanka, but to meet with the Sri Lankan community who have almost 90,000 Australians with Sri Lankan background living here, and to meet with them, and their young people, to watch their dances in times like this, was very reassuring." Speaking at the packed out Toomuc Reserve, Mr Morrison said the $15 million investment, as well as the completion of the Berwick Buddhist Temple, are essential for Australia's diverse communities. "As our community's age and go through different phases of life, there are things that we
must do to bind Australians together," he said. "When I became Prime Minister, I said I wanted to keep Australia's economy strong so we can deliver the funding for the essential services, health, schools, hospitals, (and) roads that Australians relied on. "As we take this country forward and keep Australians together, there are important services we have to invest in, particularly for the many migrant communities that make up Australia." The Prime Minister also delighted the strong Pakenham Football Club contingent by confirming that Mr Wood's promise of $4.5 million to the user groups of Toomuc Reserve would be going ahead, with club president and Toomuc Reserve committee chair Travis Hamilton telling the Gazette that this was real money, not just a promise. "We received the funding from Jason Wood. They're committed funds - not a promise," he said. "The only way this won't go ahead is if the Labor Party won the election and pulled the pin. At this stage the Labor Party is yet to commit any funding to Toomuc Reserve."
Pleas for temple crossing By Brendan Rees A Casey councillor has joined calls for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on Evans Road in Lynbrook to make it safer for those using a Sikh temple. Cr Damien Rosario has thrown his support behind the Sikh community's pleas for the crossing, adding up to 15,000 cars a day would use Evans Road once it re-opens in 2020. "With that many cars going through now is the time to take a look at and to advocate for an appropriate pedestrian crossing," he said. "This is a matter of safety and given that we have a Federal Election coming up I'm hoping perhaps or even from the State Government or both we can get some funding to help ensure that crossing does happen prior to the road being opened." Evans Road has been closed at the level crossing since 2005, dividing the communities of Lyndhurst, Lynbrook and Cranbourne West.
Works on the Evans Road level crossing removal will be fast-tracked with a new road bridge to begin this year and completed by 2020. Cr Rosario successfully moved an urgent business motion at council's meeting on 16 April for council officers to advocate for an interim pedestrian crossing and cycle assess to be installed near the Lynbrook Sikh Temple. Council will also write a letter to Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne and Liberal candidate for Holt Jennifer Van den Broek requesting funding be provided for the pedestrian crossing. "In speaking with council officers and liaising with them they're very aware of that situation as well which is fantastic," Cr Rosario said. Leading the charge on behalf of the Sikh community is Meenu Sachdeva, a volunteer at the temple who says a pedestrian crossing would benefit everyone. "Something has to be done so the people can

"Older people especially, and as well as ourselves with the kids...how are they going to cross the road? "We don't want anyone to lose their loved ones," Ms Sachdeva added. 12407683-FA18-19

Sixty-three motorists have been hit with speeding fines in Casey as part of an Easter road blitz by Victoria Police. During the five-day Operation Nexus period, police detected 158 offences - including 33 unregistered vehicles, and six drink drivers. Thirty-three unregistered vehicles and eight unlicensed drivers were also detected. Other common offences included mobile phone (5), impoundments (2), drug-driving (8), and six disqualified drivers, and one seat belt offence. Casey Highway Patrol Sergeant Pat McGavigan said overall the results were "great" for Casey. "The results are positive for Casey; it shows the majority of people are doing the right thing and should be congratulated for their good work," he said. "But to catch one person speeding, or one person drink driving or one person using drugs in their system is disappointing. "With all the advertising that goes on they

During Easter, three died on Victorian roads including a 19-year-old man who fell from the rear of a ute in Frankston. Across the state, police detected 11,674 offences including 4,221 speeding drivers. On average, one in 16 tested drivers were found to be either drink driving or under the influence of illicit drugs. In the wake of the operation, Road Police Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said every driving offence could take a life in a "split second". "Every person that gets behind the wheel of a car needs to realise this and accept the responsibility they have to ensure that they themselves and the motorists they share the road with get home safely." Police would continue a strong presence on the roads during the Anzac Day holiday period, Asst Comm Leane said. "We will be working hard to ensure the tragedies we have seen during Easter are not repeated."

Guns, drugs and cars By Brendan Rees A 41-year-old man from Lyndhurst has been arrested after police swooped on properties across the South East where firearms, drugs, and luxurious cars were seized. In a series of dawn raids, officers from several specialist units including the heavily armed Special Operations Group arrested 10 people on Wednesday 17 April. Five people have been charged following nine warrants which were executed at Bentleigh East, Oakleigh South, Moorabbin, Glen Iris, and Longwarry as part of Operation Dante. Police seized a number of items about 16kgs of methylamphetamine, about half a kilogram of MDMA which with a street value of more than $160,000, a quantity of unknown powder, and steroids. A red Ferrari California T coupe was also seized along with a 2017 Mercedes Benz C63, Holden Commodore ute, a BMW X5, a 2015 Jeep, two jet skis, and a motorcycle. A dismantled firearm and eight operating firearms, and a significant amount of cash
were among other items seized. The methylamphetamine could have been worth $3 million dollars had they reached the streets, police say. “We’re very, very pleased and proud of the outcome,” Superintendent Sharon McKinnon said. “Organised crime is operating and that’s why we continue to build upon our capabilities. “Whilst we’ve shut down a significant syndicate today what we say is there will be more out there operating so we actually rely on the community to let us know these people,” she added. Operation Dante has been running for about 12 months tracking offenders trafficking and manufacturing methylamphetamine. The Divisional Response Unit were supported by a number of other units including the Critical Incident Response Team, general duties police, detectives from a number of crime investigation units, Frontline Tasking Unit, Southern Metro Crime Team and Clan Labs.

Wood men to the rescue By Brendan Rees Nifty carpenters in the South East are lending a helping hand in the aftermath of the Bunyip fire devastation. The Berwick District Woodworkers Club have dedicated their time building 30 letterboxes for victims of the March blaze which destroyed seven homes and burnt more than 14,000 hectares. Club vice president Brian Crowe said the members were "only too willingly to help" after receiving the call from members of Facebook group called 'Victorian Bushfire Horse Help'. He said timber was donated by Van Steensel Timbers in Officer while paint was donated by Wattle Fountain Gate. "We cut all that up; I made a template and cut up all the letter boxes," Mr Crowe said. "I got some club members involved to put them all together." "It's not a case of whether you should or not," he said of the project. "They were only too willing to help and the club enjoys that sort of stuff." According to Mr Crowe, insurance companies had trouble locating properties as there were no letterboxes or numbers they could identify and was delaying any action. He said Vermont Woodworkers Club were also helping build 40 letterboxes.

Mail theft caught on cam By Brendan Rees A man walking a dog has been caught on CCTV footage "helping himself" to a parcel from a South East doorstep. Ashton Menezes of Lynbrook said the man brazenly walked up his mother's driveway on Lawless Drive in Cranbourne before picking up the box, opening it, and running off with the goods. Cameras caught the man taking the package within half-an-hour of it being delivered about 2pm on Monday 15 April. "Looking at the footage we noticed he's walked past the house and then walking back, and was eyeing the parcel from the walkway," Mr Menezes said. The thief then decided to return and take the package, he said. "Just took the entire package, with the box and everything inside and left." Mr Menezes said he ordered the package from JD Sports which he arranged to be delivered to his mother's address. He initially thought gardeners - who his mother had organised to attend - had placed the parcel "somewhere safe." "I thought I'd treat myself to the package," he said, which was worth $200. "Why not, I deserve it, I've worked hard as we all do and this happens. "This is actually the third time someone has actually come and done something like this and I've kind of had it." Mr Menezes has reported the theft to Cranbourne Police who is investigating. "It's not so much about the package, I really don't care about the package...it's more just getting justice because that's what really matters," he said. He also called JD Sports which he says were happy to organise a refund. "I hate pointing fingers but they should've left it in a decent location because it was meant to be a safe drop location which didn't

After the fire
12414732-DJ18-19
Students will return to St Catherine's Catholic Primary School in Berwick on 29 April following a fire that destroyed several classrooms earlier this month. Firefighters were called to the scene after a gas rupture caused a building to explode into flames about 11.40am on Monday 8 April. The fire is believed to be related to work on a construction site at the school. Ambulance Victoria confirmed a man was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital with burns to his upper body and legs in a serious but stable condition while a second man was treated for smoke inhalation. Chief Executive Officer of Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Ltd, Maria Kirkwood, said the school was working hard to minimise disruptions for students and their families. "Our aim is for classes to continue as seamlessly as possible. Twelve learning areas have been affected by fire, water and smoke damage, so students and families will notice some changes when they return to school," she said. "We have brought in relocatable classrooms, and we will make every effort to get them ready for students in the coming days. Parents and carers of students enrolled at St Catherine's have been notified about the incident. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the construction workers who were on site at the time of the fire, particularly the young builder who was injured. We wish him all the best as he recovers," Ms Kirkwood said. Enquiries about school programs and opening hours can be directed to St Catherine's on 9702 1466.

A Berwick woman is playing a leading role in a ground-breaking campaign to put an end to family violence in multicultural communities. Human rights activist Tina Brunet is one 65 community leader across Victoria who are advocating in their communities for change to attitudes and behaviour around domestic violence through the campaign titled 'Be Part of the Change'. Ms Brunet, who migrated to Australia from India aged nine, hopes community members can become a part of the effort to change attitudes about family violence. "I was raised in a culture where various forms of violence against women was and still is regarded appropriate behaviour," she said. "Violence takes on many forms: physical and sexual violence are the forms that are most understood, but violence can also be emotional and financial where women are subjected to language, behaviours and psychological harm that can make them feel isolated, disempowered and dependent." In 2017 Tina graduated from the AMES Australia Leadership Course, designed to build the capacity of women and men from culturally and linguistically diverse communities to contribute to the prevention of violence against women. "The 'I am part of the Change' campaign encourages victims, bystanders, friends and families of victims to call it out, stand up and to put a stop to violence," Ms Brunet said. "All can be victims of violence but they can also have a voice to break through the violence that is inflicted on themselves or in their community". For women who are from diverse multicultural backgrounds, barriers such as language, financial independence and cultural beliefs may prevent them from accessing services that are available to support them, Ms Brunet says. "I'm not here to save anyone: I can't possibly do that on my own," she says. "I am here to tell them that there is help, there is support, there is information and there are ways that women can put a stop to violence and shift from being the victims to being survivors."

Award honour for arts stalwart A record number of youths are enrolled to vote in the May Federal election. 192813
By Brendan Rees A dedication to visual and performing arts has earned a well-respected Casey man a mayoral honour. Tony Purcell, who celebrated his 90th birthday in February, was presented a certificate by City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon at the Old Cheese Factory on Thursday 4 April for his long standing work within the arts community, particularly his involvement with the Berwick Artists Society, and to celebrate his milestone birthday. Cr Stapledon said it was a pleasure to recognise Mr Purcell who was an "integral to the concept and development of Bunjil Place and many other developments within the arts community." "The City of Casey thanks you for all that you have and are doing and wish you every happiness now and into the future," she said. Mr Purcell, also a recipient of the prestigious Casey Lindsay King Arts Award and Australia's Centenary Medal, said he was deeply humbled to receive the award. He joined the Berwick Artists Society in 1993 following his retirement to "rekindle an old school boy love for painting in the realistic art watercolour mode." He had a 10 year stint as its president before standing down following his 90th birthday. Mr Purcell said the Old Cheese Factory had become "much more arts orientated." "When coupled with the success of Bunjil Place's performing arts theatre, the 'artistic soul' I have long sought for the City of Casey is at last becoming a reality," he said.

The enrolment period for the electoral roll has officially closed and the Australian Electoral Commission has labelled it the "best electoral roll in history", with youth enrolment rates in particular at record highs. The youth enrolment rate is now at its highest level ever, with around 88.8 per cent of eligible 18-24 year olds enrolled. "There were around 70,000 18-24 year-olds among the additions to the roll during the close of rolls week," said electoral commissioner Tom Rogers "Enrolment for this youth cohort at 88.8% is now even higher than it was for the marriage postal survey when it was 88.6%." Over 400,000 18-19 year olds are enrolled to vote in their first federal election this May. A record 16,424,248 Australians have enrolled to vote this year, with the national enrolment rate now at 96.8 per cent.

Sunny outlook for newly opened Kool Kidz Narre Warren When Maria Dimoulas stood on the side of Narre Warren Cranbourne Road opposite the old day hospital on a wet, cold day last year the sun suddenly broke through the overcast sky and Maria knew she had found the perfect location for her long dreamed of childcare centre. She excitedly rang her mum and business partner, Janette Karavatis. “The sun broke through and shone and we knew this was our centre,“ said Maria. “It was a sign and affirmation we were doing the right thing." Both women love children and have long wanted to open their own childcare centre. Maria has a degree in early childhood education and a post graduate qualification in teaching children with special needs. She has extensive experience as a kindergarten teacher working at numerous childcare centres over 15 years. Janette has also worked in childcare for more than a decade. She left her career in banking to learn as much as possible about the childcare industry with the long term view that eventually she and Maria would go into business together. That dream became a reality eight weeks ago when the duo opened Kool Kidz Narre Warren. The former medical centre has been extensively refurbished and now includes seven

All the rooms have access to spacious outdoor areas and there are dedicated sleep areas and a separate kitchen. A feature of the centre is the earth room where children have lunch along with incursions and special learning experiences. Janette and Maria looked at various childcare models before settling on Kool Kidz. “The standards are so high in terms of the curriculum and the support we receive from the franchise,“ Janette said. “The way in which the centre has been fitted out and the support from head office is second to none,“ added Maria. Kool Kidz Narre Warren has capacity for

Janette said Kool Kidz would celebrate special occasions from all religions and ethnic groups so children and their families felt in-

Little Heroes Sports will visit once a week running games and sports activities. Janette and Maria also hope to introduce a music and a language program in coming terms. “Maria and I both love children and, as we have a passion for this area, we want to give our best to the community,“ Janette said. Janette and Maria's goal is to fill the centre with lots of laughter and children’s voices as well as educators who are passionate about what they do.

16 APARTMENTS UP FOR AUCTION SIXTEEN in-one-line two-bedroom apartments are going under the hammer for the first time in 45 years at 29 Stud Road, Dandenong. The property sits on a 2,013sqm* of land under RGZ2 zoning, opening the door to a medium density development to 13.5 metres, subject to council approval. The asset is being marketed and sold by Ray White Commercial Glen Waverley. Managing Director Ryan Trickey said the property provided a strong reliable income and offered financial security. In addition, potential future development means purchasers can add value instantly. “The asset is owned and was built by the vendor’s parents some 45 years ago, with the building actually named after one of those family members,” Mr Trickey said. “At fully-leased rental, the property produces $218,140 p.a. with only one vacancy on-site right now, with this apartment receiving fresh carpet and minor cosmetic touch-ups. “Potential buyers can be confident in the fact the property has seen constant tenancies and upgrades over the years, with affordable rental across the property ensuring low vacancies. “Being so close to amenities like Dandenong Plaza, Dandenong Market and the train station means there’ll always be a strong tenant demand for young families and professionals alike. “The package offers stable income and development potential and provides
an opportunity to potential buyers that’s seldom offered to the market.” Mr Ainsworth said Dandenong was a proven re-development precinct with existing permitted construction underway in the local area. “Being just 30km* South-East of the Melbourne CBD, the property is within walking distance to all central Dandenong infrastructure,” he said. “It offers excellent access to the Eastern Freeway, Monash Freeway and benefits from
Dandenong train line and buses. “Dandenong has become such a large residential and commercial hub and a strong future is being created for the suburb. “Healthy population growth, commercial developments, State Government backing and favourable development zoning changes means the Dandenong economy is booming, there is so much activity locally that the future looks very positive.” ● *approximately

Casey Cardinia Business Awards
Applications now open! Applications for the Casey Cardinia Business Awards are now open!
Free comics is no secret Ms Litkowski said this year over 40 titles will be available for free, some geared towards children and others aimed at adults. This is Secret Headquarters' third Free Comic Book Day, and having seen 500 people step through its doors during last year's celebration, Ms Litkowski is keen to see the event grow. "It's a really fun day; our comic community is so incredible. When people discover what we're like, it's always nice and we always gain people who stay with us for a long time." As well as the free titles, the store will also host three comic book artists - Chris McQuinlan, Andrew Law and Luke Andrew - who will entertain the crowds with their sketches, as well as cosplayers dressed as Wonder Woman, Star-Lord and Astrid from hit film franchise How to Train your Dragon.
This year’s awards will feature 10 categories, where winners will claim some excellent prizes, including a share of $12,000 in prize money and outstanding exposure. Free information session are available to businesses applying for the awards.

Comic book emporium Secret Headquarters is once again throwing open its doors this May for Free Comic Book Day. The Beaconsfield comic mecca is one of a number of outlets around the world that will be taking part in the day - a celebration of independent comic book stores. This year's event will take place on Saturday 4 May, and Secret Headquarters owner Kirsty Litkowski said it's a great opportunity for newcomers to take their first steps into a new world. "Picking up a comic, no matter what the story, is such an amazing form of escapism rather than hopping on machines. You can start reading and go on any adventure you like!" she said. Likewise, comic aficionados are welcome to come and chat with like-minded geeks.
Local businesses big and small are encouraged to enter, with inalists getting the chance to become the Casey Cardinia Business of the Year.

Sweet little savers By Brendan Rees Harkaway sisters Isla, 7, and Emma, 4, have found a sweet way to save some of the world's most endangered animals. The girls held a bake stall fundraiser at the front of their home on Wednesday 17 April, raising $273.45 to save the elephants, the Blue whale and the Corroboree frog. With help from their mum Melinda Eagleton, the girls sold strawberry jam, Anzac biscuits, and hot cross buns with 100 per cent of the money raised going towards the World Wildlife Fund and The Corroboree Frog Organisation. "It's been really encouraging watching the girls work together to drawing pictures and making fact sheets to display at their pop up nature strip bake stall," she said. "They are Zoo members and Isla noticed last week that her Zoo calendar for the month of April featured a Corroboree frog with facts about its danger of survival as it is endangered. "She was explaining this rather frankly to her younger sister when Emma burst out in tears," Ms Eagleton explained, adding both girls "immediately wanted to know how they could help." The girls had ideas of selling old clothes and toys, hosting a fun run, holding a raffle but with both girls enjoying a spot of baking, a

Sweet delight Libraries team up with uni at Easter hunt By Danielle Kutchel 'Easter egg hunts prove kids can find things when they want to' - so the saying goes, and it proved true at the recent Berwick Easter Egg Hunt Kids and families from around Berwick filled their baskets in this year's event, organised by O'Brien Real Estate Berwick and Berwick Business Group. Rachael Davidson, a property manager at O'Brien who helped organised the hunt, estimated a few hundred people took part across the day. It wasn't just those foil-covered treasures that attracted little fingers: Ms Davidson said organisers set up an Easter colouring competition too, as well as three raffle prizes, a sausage sizzle, show bags and other competitions throughout the day - and of course, the obligatory hot cross buns. Berwick traders Bakers Delight and Griffin & Morris Village Butchers chipped in with bread, hot cross buns and sausages, rendering it a real community celebration, Ms Davidson said. "It was definitely about giving back to the community, and celebrating Easter all together as the Berwick community," she said. Gold coin donations raised from the sausage sizzle went to the O'Brien Real Estate Foundation to help local families in need. Ms Davidson said the organisers are already planning next year's event. "We're definitely looking forward to future ones - bigger and better, with many more people involved. It's a good day for families."
An exciting new partnership between Casey Tech School and Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) has officially been signed off. Director of Casey Tech School Ben Jenkinson joined CCL chief executive Chris Buckingham for the signing of a memorandum of understanding at Bunjil Place Library Thursday, April 18. The partnership aims to provide more opportunities for the Casey community to engage with STEAM education programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) through school programs and public programs. Community engagement coordinator at Casey Tech School Kara Stuart said teaming up with CCL meant creating greater opportunities and pathways for students. "We are thrilled to be partnering with Casey Cardinia Libraries" she said. "We look forward to working together to offer a range of exciting STEAM programs and events for the Casey community". Casey Tech School and CCL have demonstrated a shared interest in upskilling the Casey community to support growth, development and innovation in local, Victorian and Australian industries. Casey Tech School opened in October 2018, delivering high-tech courses to students from 22 secondary schools in the Casey region. Mr Buckingham said public libraries went further than just lending books by encouraging a culture of lifelong learning and contributing to positive socio-economic outcomes across the community.

Surprise donation is helping hand By Brendan Rees A South East service that supports people with disabilities has received a generous donation of gardening equipment - valued at more than $2,000. The Bridge Connects, which has services in Narre Warren, Berwick, Dandenong and Cranbourne was presented the state-of-theart equipment on Thursday 11 April by MTD Products Australia, a Dandenong South gardening equipment manufacturer. A brand-new lawn-mower, whipper snipper, hedge trimmer and leaf-blower, all battery operated and with spare chargers supplied will help The Bridge maintain their own centers' gardens, and train participants with disabilities with employable gardening skills. MDT decided to support a local community project via their global stewardship program. MDT executive team assistant Kimberley Wickham spearheaded the idea with MTD's senior staff, and they got on board straight away. "The Rover CORE power equipment was thoughtfully selected by MTD staff for its maximum safety features, ease of operation, and no potentially risky fuels or chemicals are required," she said. Managing director of The Bridge Connects Mary-Jane Stolp thanked MTD for their generous donation, and for their genuine interest in the Bridge's services and participants throughout Greater Dandenong and Casey. The Bridge's Webb Street Narre Warren service coordinator Catherine Dunstan was touched and excited by MTD's donation. She has been dragging her own lawn-mover to and from the centre. Disability support worker Dan Moss knew how much the participants would love learning to use the equipment, especially the Rover leaf-blower: "They'll all be fighting over who gets to use that one," he said.

Berwick’s Anzac respect By Hayley Wildes There is simply no comparing the combat of war to what takes place on a football field. That much is obvious. So to play a game of Aussie Rules on Anzac Day is about much more than just the four points. When Berwick Football Club runs out onto Edwin Flack Reserve today (Thursday 25 April) against Healesville, they'll be doing it out of respect and appreciation of those who have served and continue to serve our country. On Tuesday night after training, Berwick players and officials gathered in their club rooms to learn more about the Anzac spirit and how the army's values relate to the local community and everyday life. With the room silent, Lieutenant Colonel (LTCOL) David Hughes spoke about the Australian Army's four all-important values; courage, initiative, respect and teamwork. LTCOL Hughes, who was born in Gippsland and lived in Berwick from 2016 to 2018, joined the Australian Army in 1995 and has served in Darwin, Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne, and has undertaken operational service in Afghanistan and South Sudan. He spoke about the lessons he has taken from those experiences, both good and bad, and how they drive him in his everyday life. "Courage isn't just getting into a pack or diving on a footy, courage is also helping your mates and if you've got a mate that has a problem, going up and having a chat with them." LTCOL Hughes said. Furthermore, LTCOL Hughes spoke about

"Our Anzac values carry through all of us today; when there are fires or floods, we help each other out," he said.
"We lost two lifesavers down the Great Ocean Road over the weekend. The tourist was saved, but unfortunately the father and son lost their lives - they're the heroes for putting
themselves at risk to help someone else. "When you're thinking of your heroes, what are they sacrificing and giving up? Normally, heroes are related to sacrifice, what they're doing for someone else or a higher cause." With LTCOL Hughes and members of the Berwick RSL captivating the room, those from the Berwick Football Club learned how the Anzac spirit will forever be embodied and remembered by the Australian Army and, for those not directly involved in the Army, that spirit can still absolutely be applied in everyday life and on the field. Berwick's Anzac Day game against Healesville kicks off at 2:20, with a pre-game Anzac ceremony - including a full contingent of flag bearers, bag pipers and a bugler - taking place beforehand.
Demons off to a strong start in the new VNL season By Hayley Wildes
The Casey Stadium stands were full at the Casey Demons first VNL home game recently. 192792 son so far was the Round 3 game against the Hawks. In a historic night for netball in the local region, the Demons hosted their first ever home game and with a packed Casey Stadium crowd behind them, they were far too good
for the Hawks. The atmosphere within the stadium was electric and points to just how much having an elite VNL team means to the netball community in the area.

The Casey Demons are making sure their presence is being felt in the Victorian Netball League (VNL). In their inaugural season of playing at the highest level of netball in the state, the Demons are proving that they mean business. Through four rounds, Casey sits in the top four with a 3-1 record. Having taken care of Melbourne University (59-54), Hawks Netball (74-53) and Aerials (66-54), Casey has showcased a slick and impressive game style that is extremely fun to watch. Their lone loss, a 74-54 defeat at the hands of the undefeated City West Falcons in Round 2, saw the Demons fall behind early - trailing 22-11 after one quarter - and they were unable to fight their way back. The play of goal shooter Emma Ryde is powering the Demons on offence - her ability to catch the ball over defenders close to goal is basically unmatched in the VNL, while her shooting touch is just as impressive. There's no doubting the Demons' attack has been firing on all cylinders and having scored the second most goals (253) of any team, just two behind City West Falcons (255), is proof of that. With Ryde scoring the majority of goals for Casey, Erin Bell's play from the wing attack position has been just as vital. Her speed across the court and the fact she rarely makes a bad decision with ball in hand has seen her dominate games and propel many attacking forays. The defensive duo of Karli Foster and Taya Rawson has been just as important for the Demons. Their relentless attack on the ball and teamwork in the back third sees their opponents unable to get comfortable. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the sea-

The Doves show no mercy OUTER EAST FOOTBALL DIVISION 1 REVIEW They scored a goal in the opening minute, and simply wouldn't let up. Welcome to 2019, and the rejuvenation of the Doveton Football Club. The Doves completely dismantled Officer at home in what loomed as a Good Friday blockbuster to register its first senior win since defeating Beaconsfield back in August of 2017, ending a wretched run of heavy defeats, 20.20 (140) to 8.10 (58). Both highly fancied teams in Division 1 of the Outer East competition after strong offseason signings and enthusiasm about what the new divisional set-up could bring, the Doves looked like a side hell-bent on righting the wrongs of the past. It took just a matter of seconds for Sean Kelleher to register the opening major, and despite a quick response from Kangaroos skipper Matthew Clarke, the Doves went into the quarter time break with a two-point lead despite completely dominating play across the ground. Big man, and new recruit Michael Sikora was in a particularly ominous mood, dominated the ruck and around the ground in the opening term, while club president Aaron Henwood was instrumental with his run and carry. By sheer weight of numbers, the Doves began to slowly assert themselves, capitalising on some silly mistakes by the Kangaroos, and with big second terms to the likes of Mitch Pierce, and former AFL star Matthew Boyd - who was getting his dose of leather poisoning to snare upwards of 20 touches for the half - the home side surged out to a 16-point half time lead, and undeniable control of the contest. It was then a stunning second-half blitz
that sealed the deal, with the Kangaroos looking surprisingly flat against a side that looked quick, dynamic and clinical when surging the ball forward. The Kangaroos stuck with the home side for as long as they could, but the Doves just had too many options up forward, peppering the goals to surge out to a match-winning 43-point lead, before Clarke scored a major on the three-quarter-time siren to cut the deficit to 37. A simply stunning patch of football sparked from a remarkable thirst to run the Kangaroos off their feet - saw the home side score an incredible four goals in the opening four minutes of the final term to bring the margin over 10-goals - with Daniel Charles' group playing some simply electrifying football. The Doves eventually ran out 82-point winners, slamming on 14 goals to four after half time. But it could have very easily been over 100 points had the home side made the most of their chances at times, kicking 7.7 to just 0.4 in the final term alone. For the Doves, Sikora was the clear best afield in a brilliant rucking display alongside Gach Nyuon, skipper Matt Stapleton and youngster Deakyn Smith were excellent, the wise head Boyd was instrumental with his composure, while another recruit Luke Daidone was superb. On a dirty day for the Kangaroos, Tyler Clark found plenty of the footy and looked to create plenty through the midfield. Skipper Clarke and gun defender James Waldon battled hard all day. Casey overrun by AFL Academy young guns By Hayley Wildes

By Nick Creely
The Casey Demons may have had a VFL bye on the weekend, but the team certainly didn’t take the week off. After claiming their maiden win of the season in Round 2, the Demons took the opportunity to build on that momentum in a unique way. On Saturday morning, at the MCG prior to the St Kilda and Melbourne AFL game, Casey took on the AFL Academy Australian Under 18s - a side that boasts the very best juniors in the land. In a game that saw Casey get out of the blocks quickly, the AFL Academy came back strongly in the second half to run away winners, 15.7 (97) to 11.8 (74). While the Demons boasted plenty of familiar names, the AFL Academy included Dandenong Stingray Hayden Young, along with Gippsland Power pair Caleb Serong and Sam Flanders. The Demons acclimatised to the MCG atmosphere first and at quarter-time Casey led by five points after Mitch Lewis slotted two goals. While the first quarter was a great start for the Demons, they took control of the contest in the second term. With skipper Mitch White, Jake DiPasquale, Jaxon Briggs and Lewis playing well, the Demons put on four goals to one in the second term to hold a 24-point advantage at the main break, 7.4 (46) to 3.4 (22). The experience of AFL-listed players Jeff Garlett and Alex Neal-Bullen was on display as the pair booted goals late in the term to help the Demons skip out to a handy lead.
When White opened the second half scoring with a major, Casey had jumped out to a game-high 31-point lead. From there though, the AFL Academy began to wrestle back the momentum as the group of highly-touted youngsters showcased its class and endurance. The AFL Academy went on to boot five goals in a row to finish the third quarter and reduce the margin to just one-point with a term to play. Casey’s inability to keep possession of the ball was compounded by the AFL Academy’s sublime ball-winners. Dandenong’s Young was a stand-out across half-back and played a key role in helping the AFL Academy get back in the game. Mykelti Lefau gave Casey a perfect start to the fourth by slotting the opening goal of the term, but the AFL Academy responded once again. The youngsters kicked three successive goals to boast a 12-point advantage, but another Lefau goal saw that lead reduced to just five points. With the game on the line, Casey was unable to stay with the AFL Academy as they ran away with the game to win by 23 points after kicking 12 of the last 15 goals of the game. The Demons return to VFL action this weekend, taking on Richmond on Saturday at Casey Fields from 2pm. Meanwhile, the Stingrays and Power return to NAB League action also on Saturday, with Dandenong taking on Oakleigh at Shepley Oval and Gippsland head up to Sydney to take on the Greater Western Sydney Academy. Cavs are building nicely By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers are rolling in the 2019 Big V basketball season. With three teams having lost just once each in the opening five rounds of the season and the Youth League 1 women owning a strong 4-2 record, Casey is posting vital early seasons wins. After a week off over the Easter break, the Cavs return to action this weekend and there is plenty to look forward to. The Championship men, who sit second on the ladder with a 5-1 record, are riding a fourgame winning streak and have games against Werribee (1-5) and Corio Bay (2-4) in Round 6. They face the Devils in Werribee on Saturday night, before returning home to host the Stingrays at Casey Stadium on Sunday from 3.30pm. Casey has been led by superstar Raheem Lemons (22.5 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2 assists per game), who continues to dominate on both ends of the court. His efficient shooting (69 per cent from the field) and ability to bully his way into the paint makes him a match-up nightmare. Matt Donlan (17 points and 4.5 rebounds per game) and Brandon Polk (16 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game) are also producing plenty of headaches for their opponents. With so many options on offence, as well as possessing a strong defensive mindset, the Cavs will be confident of chalking up two more wins this weekend. The Championship women boast a 4-1 record, sit third on the ladder and face the fourth-placed Werribee Devils on the road on Saturday night. In what promises to be a cracking contest, the Cavs will need the likes of Tanarly Hood (18.3 points, 7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game) and Sarah Helejian (17 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game) to fire - just as they have done through the opening five rounds of the season. Halejian - the Cavs' stand-out import who
In her second season with Casey, Tanarly Hood is again starring. 192336 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS
Import Sarah Halejian has been a massive addition for the Cavaliers. 192336 captained Yale University during her college career and hails from New Jersey, USA - has proven to be everything Casey could've hoped for and more through her first five games in Australia. Casey has a great balance cross the board, with six players averaging over nine points per game and it's this depth that will be needed throughout the long season as the Cavs look to make some noise.
The Youth League 1 men have made it six wins from seven games and will be looking to claim their seventh win when they face Corio Bay from 1.30pm on Sunday at Casey Stadium. The Stingrays sit sixth on the ladder with a 4-4 record. With threats such as Blake Taylor (18.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists) and Brendon Head (14 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists), Casey should be able to take care of business.

The Youth League 1 women are third on the ladder and have won four of their last five games to boast a 4-2 record. On Saturday night at home, they face the McKinnon Cougars (14) who are riding a four-game losing streak. In a team that boasts tremendous depth, the Cavs have been led by rising star Lauren Tuplin (19.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2 assists), who continues to prove she is one of the very best players in the division.
