MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Some people - myself to some extent included - find cemeteries distinctly on the creepy side, but a stroll around the Warwick Cemetery with volunteer guide Fran Hockings was a real eye-opener for this week's cover story (pages 4 & 5). The 2019 Southern Downs Heritage Festival - which runs until Monday 6 May - is packed with fascinating activities which celebrate the rich history of the Warwick and surrounding region, something which many of us who live here often take for granted. I'd encourage Free Times readers to check out the program online as there is sure to be something for everyone, whether it be the cemetery tours, open days and other events at St Mark's Church and other historic landmarks such as the Abbey of the Roses, and events in Allora, Killarney and elsewhere. On a separate note, the 2019 Adina Polocrosse World Cup culminates this weekend after a huge week of international competition. If you've never attended a polocrosse event before this is a great opportunity to watch the world's best in action, along with competition in the Barastoc Interstate series being run in conjunction with the World Cup - go both the Aussies and the Maroons ... BIG INVESTMENT AT JOHN DEE Maranoa MP David Littleproud last week turned the first sod at Warwick's John Dee Abattoir to mark the start of construction on the Regional Cold Store facility, set to bring more than 280 new full-time jobs to the region. "Securing $4.8 million for this facility will help bolster employment opportunities in our region," Mr Littleproud told media last Thursday 18 April. "This month corporate giant Woolworths made the devastating announcement it would shut its Big W distribution centre here in Warwick so John Dee's expansion project - and the jobs set to be created - will go some way to help secure employment opportunities for those families uncertain about their future in our region. "This expansion will not only protect the 630 existing jobs, it creates 143 new full-
time jobs and 138 indirect new full-time jobs. "During the construction phase, this expansion project will also provide employment for about 80 people. "Export opportunities from this development will come to about $111 million. "Making the right infrastructure investments, like the John Dee Regional Cold Store Facility, grows local economies and that's something I proudly stand for because it ensures we get our fair share. "What this project really boils down to is creating employment opportunities for our youth in years to come, providing incentives for people to move into our community and making sure that businesses in the Southern Downs continue to grow with cutting-edge technology." ●

REPORT FOR CORONER OVER TWO DEATHS AT FESTIVAL Police will prepare a report for the Queensland Coroner following the deaths of two people at a bush music festival at Cherrabah Resort at Elbow Valley east of Warwick this week. It is understood the bodies of a 24 year old Maleny man and a 22 year old Nambour woman were found inside a tent at the 'Rabbits Eat Lettuce' festival around 9.30am last Monday 22 April. Police have told the media the deaths were 'non-suspicious' but investigations are continuing. The event was originally to have been held near Casino in northern New South Wales but local police there refused its
Festival deaths ''non-suspicious''. Picture: Facebook image approval on safety grounds, leading to a court battle and ultimately a decision by the organisers to move the event to Cherrabah.
A statement posted on Facebook by Rabbits Eat Lettuce organisers on Monday read as follows "All of the staff and community at Rabbits Eat Lettuce would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of those who were found deceased," the statement said. "Our thoughts and concerns are predominately for their wellbeing and privacy during this time. "It is absolutely heartbreaking to lose some beautiful souls that we consider part of our extended family. "Rabbits Eat Lettuce place the wellbeing and safety of our patrons as the number one
priority and we have highly trained first aid, professional paramedics working 24 hours throughout the festival and an on-call doctor onsite. "In addition QLD Police and QLD Ambulance are on duty in a user pay capacity during the festival. "We work together with authorities to ensure that the environment we provide is as safe as possible. "The relevant bodies will be investigating to determine exactly what happened. "It is appropriate that we give them the chance to do their work and respect the deceased family's right to privacy and avoid any speculation." ●

The Marinos also allege the development will involve "changes to the stormwater discharge characteristics" of the site which would "substantially damage the (Marinos') land". A court appeal by Stanthorpe residents against the approval by the Southern Downs Regional Council of a retirement village on Torrisi Terrace has moved to the initial negotiation or mediation stage. As reported in the Free Times owners of land adjoining the site on the outskirts of Stanthorpe began court action against the council in January after councillors approved the project at their November meeting. The proposal by JVY Group is for a 90-residence 'lifestyle retirement resort' for over-50's on Torrisi Terrace. Former Stanthorpe resident and JVY
Group national sales manager Dianne Fielding has previously said the facility will "rival any lifestyle resort in the big city" and is proposed to be named Arcadia', a nod to Glad and Norm Crisp who were family friends of Dianne's growing up and who operated the Arcadia Picture Theatre from 1953 to the late 1960s, as well as other local businesses. But adjoining landowners Mario, Salvatore, Venerando and Santina Marino lodged their appeal in the Planning and Environment Court of Queensland to have the council's approval overturned. They argue that the development will

lot of people - this reporter included - tend to find cemeteries rather morbid places and generally best avoided - but with the 2019 Southern Downs Heritage Festival here now is a great time to connect with the local history of our region. And there's no better way to do so over the next week and a bit than through a guided tour conducted by local tourism volunteers and history buffs Fran Hockings and Betty Wells. The congenial - and highly knowledgeable - pair started their Warwick
Cemetery tours several years back when Warwick Town Crier Bob Townshend was overseas and then local tourism chief Tracy Vellacott suggested Fran and Betty guide visitors through the cemetery during the Heritage Festival, at which they both had a good laugh. But they took to the task with enthusiasm and since then the tours have - pardon the pun - taken on a life of their own, and have proved hugely popular with both locals and visitors young and old. Even many of those with four or five generations buried in the Warwick Cemetery may not realise the enormous amount of history literally set in stone with the thousands of inscriptions telling

their own story of the pioneers who carved out the early foundations of the social, economic and political life of the Rose City, the first free settlement in colonial Queensland. Fran told the Free Times part of the aim of the cemetery tours is not simply to point out the famous 'movers and shakers' of politics and commerce in the early days, but the diverse range of folk who in their own individual way contributed to the building of Warwick. There are far too many stories to include in one article - and that would steal Fran and Betty's thunder - but the story of the Warwick Cemetery starts with the very first known burial, that of one Thomas
Howard in 1853. Little is known of his story, and Fran says one of the offshoots of the cemetery tours is that from time to time those who accompany herself and Betty surprise them with unexpected nuggets of information. Of course there are the stories of prominent families such as the Morgans, Allmans and McEvoys - and far too many others to mentions here - but there are also some stories which will surprise. One of these relates to the resting place of a certain Berkman - a 'ticket of leave' man who operated a store on Victoria Street after coming to Australia with the Leslie Brothers, and who by all accounts made good in Warwick, along with many others.

Also of note are the various ancient symbols which adorn the historic headstones at Warwick Cemetery - such as anchors (hope or faith in religion), shells (fertility and resurrection) and books (symbolic of knowledge, and the Bible). But for Fran and Betty - both also dedicated volunteers at the Visitor Information Centre - their guided tours are about opening the eyes of others to the rich heritage which makes up the fabric of Warwick. "It's true, the tours did start out as a bit of a joke and a laugh for us, but we really enjoy what we do," Fran said. ALBION STREET PROPOSAL FOR COUNCIL BY JEREMY SOLLARS A massive commercial and retail development planned for Warwick at the southern end of Albion Street near the intersection with Wood Street is awaiting consideration by Southern Downs councillors. Local builder and developer Matthew Collins has applied for approval for a project to be branded 'Albion Central', comprising a range of potential uses listed in application documents as a "shop, office, showroom, food and drink outlet, low impact industry, health care services, entertainment activity and garden centre". Those uses are listed as general in nature and compatible within the zoning of the land concerned under the current planning scheme for the Southern Downs. If it goes ahead the development would see the removal of existing residences at 74-80 Albion Street and at an adjoining residence to the rear at 23 Oak Avenue. As a 'Material Change of Use' the application was subject to public advertisement and attracted submissions from nearby residents but the submission period has since closed. Residents' concerns relate primarily to the height and scale of the proposed development and potential impacts of stormwater drainage on neighbouring properties but a number are understood to be supportive, providing the council sets appropriate conditions.
The relatively narrow Oak Avenue behind the proposed Albion Central development. Another area of concern for surrounding residential properties is the proposed traffic access to the site, which would in part be from the relatively narrow Oak Avenue, which public submissions have stated is effectively a "single-lane" roadway. Concept drawings and plans provided to the council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) as part of the application indicate the development would comprise relatively large-scale
'showroom' style buildings fronting Albion Street. These would surround a central carparking area comprising a total of 64 parking spaces, with a "primary" "left-in, left-out" access driveway on Albion Street, and a "secondary" and "all movements" access driveway on Oak Avenue. A traffic report submitted as part of the application and prepared by engineering consultants Q Traffic states the following -
"The proposed development is expected to have a negligible impact upon the performance of the Albion Street/Wood Street intersection, and the proposed development is expected to result in increases in delays to the critical movements at the Albion/Percy Street intersection," the report states. "However as previously discussed, the delays to these movements are already exceeding acceptable thresholds, and

NEWS EVENT A BOON FOR BUSINESS BY JEREMY SOLLARS Keeping the thousands at Morgan Park's Warwick Polocrosse Club's fields wellfed during the World Cup is a daunting task, but one local business right up to it is Rose City Premium Meats in Rose City Shoppingworld. There is no question the 2019 Adina Polocrosse World Cup will bring significant economic benefits to Warwick, and the 'RCPM' crew are just one of a range of locally-owned businesses that will do well out of the event. Co-owners Paul Carey and Peter Wright and their staff have had to juggle Easter and public holidays and back to school around supplying fresh, locally-sourced meat to polocrosse competitors, visitors and spectators, and the volumes are pretty impressive. We're talking around 3000 rib fillet 'minute' steaks, some 2000 crumbed rissoles for burgers, 50 barbecue chooks for one meal service alone, and a whopping 80 kilos of sliced meats for sandwiches, such as ham and silverside. All up, Paul Carey estimates the World Cup will represent around $15,000 worth of turnover for Rose City Premium Meats, not bad for one standalone event. "The dynamics of it all have been a challenge, that's for sure," Paul told the Free Times. "It's definitely been all hands on deck and we've had a lot of earlier-than-usual starts. THIS triple brick Federation home has been meticulously restored and finished with unsurpassed attention to detail that pays homage to its history without forgoing the comforts of modern living, making it an extremely attractive proposition for Garden Weddings, Photo Shoots or a Bed and Breakfast. Your guests will experience the full effect of the old-world charm as they cross the wide 3-sided verandah to enter the home through the central grand entrance hallway which accesses the 3 large bedrooms, elaborate formal lounge room and formal dining room, kitchen with granite bench tops, conservatory that captures the natural light of both morning and afternoon, office, utility room, 2 bathrooms, laundry and an outdoor entertainment area.
Federation features include the high ceilings, decorative cornices, arch top hall doors, period architraves and skirting boards, beautiful mantels framing the numerous open fire places with associated chimney stacks, French doors, claw foot bath, servants bell and brick signatures tastefully incorporating the comfort of mod-cons including air conditioning and wood and gas heating. Positioned on a prominent corner allotment of 8,094m² amongst magnificently landscaped gardens, access is remote and leads you to the huge American barn style shed with mezzanine area. "Claremont" has been lovingly restored, carefully preserving its original features of a bygone era that give it the ambience that only a stately home such as this grand old residence can.●

CASEY O’CONNOR
THRILLING WIN BY A GREAT DUO
ROUND 7 ROOSTERS STORM COWBOYS BUNNIES TIGERS SHARKS MANLY EELS
RETURNING HOME Finally, a good news story for the NRL. On Monday afternoon the Parramatta Eels and the NRL family (perhaps not so much the Tigers) celebrated a significant moment in history - the opening of the new Parramatta home, the Bankwest Stadium. It is 33 years since the old Parramatta Stadium was opened and 38 years since Cumberland Oval was burnt down after Parramatta won the 1981 grand final. The new facilities are world class. No need to miss even a moment of the game - there are even TV's showing the footy in toilets. What a welcome home party it was as. The resurgent Eels, wearing replica jerseys from 1986, the club's last premiership turned on a master class that was worthy of the occasion. The 51-6 drubbing of the Tigers did the legendary Eels of the 80's proud and there were many of the men linked to the halcyon days of the club on hand to celebrate the milestone. Some of the favourite sons, including Ray Price, Steve Edge, Mick Cronin, Peter Wynn, Brett Kenny and of course Peter Sterling who helped the club to star status in the 80's and premierships in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1986 were included in the day's celebrations. In an afternoon to savour Mitchell Moses etched his name in Eels folklore in the freetimes.com.au
13th minute of the game when he scored and then converted the first try at the Eel's new home. In a sensational individual performance Moses who is off contract at the end of season played a role in four other tries and added a last-minute field goal. The game quickly turned into a try fest. In scenes reminiscent of Eels' first game at the old Parramatta Stadium in 1986 where the score line against St George was 36-6, the 2019 Eels laid on more tries in the 18th, 23rd, 26th, 30th, 48th, 52nd, 62nd and 66th minutes. As delirious supporters waved 'Welcome Home' banners and cheered themselves hoarse the Parra theme song blared across the ground. In scenes also reminiscent of the 80's after the game thousands of fans poured onto the playing area to get a taste of what it is like in the middle of their new hallowed turf. It was a wonderful celebration of all things good around rugby league. Finally, a good news story - you could almost hear Beattie and Greenberg sighing in relief. NEW RECIPE Mix one-part Currie; one-part Queensland Racing Integrity Commission; add a few legal eagles an overseas trip to Bali; a Scooter an affidavit or two and some dodgy telephone reception. Stir well and what you will end up with is a situation not many people find appealing to the palate. It was the next stage of the circus surrounding Toowoomba Ben Currie and his ongoing battle with the Queensland Racing Integrity commission. Currie was not at the hearing rather at the other end of a telephone line in Bali sans a couple of Affidavits after travelling some
Kay Webb at 17. In the run downs, Steve McEvoy (40), Alan Kerr (40) and William Lathrope (40) and Annelle Batterham (31) each collected a ball. April is on its way out after a visit from the Easter Bunny. As the month draws to a close next week's competition will be the end of month medley Stableford. The event is sponsored by the captain of the Men's Pennants team, Darrell Boekholt. Tee off is 11.45 am with a shot gun start. Players are asked to complete their registration no later than 20 minutes prior to allow the starter time to allocate starting positions. Sporters will be back on the greens this Sunday after a day off to hunt for Easter eggs last Sunday. Tee off is at the usual time of 7.30am - 8.00am. ALARM AT RED HILL The alarm bells are beginning to sound at Red Hill after the Broncos slumped to their worst stat in a season since 1999. The Broncos are one win from six starts after their loss to Canberra on the weekend and find themselves in unfamiliar territory at the bottom end of the leader board. While the coach tries to remain positive Broncos' fans are less forgiving. This is not a situation they are used to and not one they are enjoying. The Broncos looked uncoordinated and a rabble as they scrambled in the last minutes of the game in Canberra - no cool heads at a time when they were needed. It is an interesting stat that coming into last week's game Corey Oates was the leading try scorer in the competition. Time to buck up boys, take a leaf out of the Cowboys and Titan's book. Get back on the horse and find some winning form or the axe maybe wielded. Not before time if you ask some supporters. CWHO GETS THE "C" Normally if you get given a "C" it is not a good thing and not something that is sought after or highly prized. With just a little over five weeks until kick off in Game one of the 2019 State of Origin Series there is plenty of talk about who will be handed a "C" in the Maroon's camp. The Maroon's captaincy that is following the retirement of Greg Inglis. One of the favourites in the mix is Daly Cherry Evans. If DCE gets the big "C" it would really be the return of the prodigal son earning the wrath of those north of the border when he back flipped on his Titans deal several years ago.

John and Jenny Gillott of Warwick at Randwick for Winx's farewell. Winx may be retired but the accolades continue. She is expected to be named Australian Horse of the Year for a record fourth consecutive year.
distance on a scooter to get enough service to make the call. Not sure which is more dangerous Currie's continuing attitude towards the Integrity Commission and matters some of which date back to 2017 or riding a scooter through the streets of Bali. The circus rolls on and has many industry insiders scratching their heads. The entire debacle may impact on the upcoming Brisbane Winter Carnival. Aquis Farm recently released a statement stating "horses in which the Managing Director has an interest or sole ownership will not race in the Brisbane Carnival until a number of integrity issues are fully resolved to ensure a level playing field for all participants." The Lindsay Park operation has come out in support of the stance. They also will not race horses in Queensland until integrity issues are addressed. This is one recipe that is definitely not palatable. THIS BURGESS NO BUNNY Plenty of early Easter celebrations for Stanthorpe Junior golfer Andrew Burgess on Easter Saturday. Burgess had an excellent round in the Easter Saturday event. He got out to a good start in the Single Stableford event sponsored by Simon Shannon. Burgess had a good front nine scoring 22 points and played perhaps his best nine holes to date on the back nine where he scored 27 points. His total 49 points was easily the best score of the round and got the chocolates. The remainder of the field were merely playing for the runner's up spot. Stephen Favero was the best of the rest with a score of 44 points - which incidentally was the winning score last week. Burgess is young man who has set himself a high benchmark. Expect to see more winning results from him in the future. It was a double celebration for the winner of the Ladies' event. Kay Webb not only shot a winning round of 35 points but also celebrated her birthday on Saturday. Webb played two even nines scoring 17 points and then 18 finishing ahead of Trish Fittock. She collected the runner's up prize for the second successive week. Kev Rowling collected the pin at 3 and Andrew Burgess at 17. Scott Constable held the remaining pin at 12 as well as the propins at 1/10 and 5/14. Alan Kerr collected the last pro-pin at 9/18. The lady's pins went to Trish Fittock at 3, Helen Jones at 12 and

Surely one the best news stories of the week was the thrilling win of the Australian Fed cup duo of Ash Barty and Sam Stosur and so the Barty party continues to roll on. Ash Barty it seems can do no wrong. It was wonderful to see Stosur, who has for so long been known as that player who struggled in front of home crowds taste success at home. Early on in the tie it looked as though the wobbles were again in play. While Barty won both her games in straight sets, Stosur lost both singles rubbers. The second against former world number one Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-1. In a gutsy display Stosur returned to the court with her team mate only a short time after that defeat. The pair faced a must win doubles match to progress Australia to the final of the Fed Cup for the first time in 33 years. The game went to three sets and there were no Stosur wobbles as she made up for those earlier losses with a display of experience skill and composure. She and Barty finally took the game 7-5; 3-6;62. The Queenslanders have five major doubles titles between them and formed a formidable double's partnership playing an exciting brand of tennis. It was a joy to watch the tournament and now Australia host the Fed Cup final in November. Their opponents - France. Stosur has joined the "Barty Party" and let's hope we are partying come November. - Casey
