According to its website, a stray female cat can produce up to 60 kittens in a year. Australian Animal Protection Society general manager Sean Coleman supported mandatory desexing of pet cats. He said the Dandenong South shelter was also feeling the strain during what is regarded as the annual 'kitten season'. With about 80 in the shelter, the numbers were less than previous years because of improved management, Mr Coleman said. It also had much reduced euthanasia rates. "We receive multiple calls and walk-ins each day regarding litters of stray kittens with nowhere else to go. "The Greater Dandenong Council does their part but we still receive a massive influx."

With the hope of swiftly re-homing 40 cats and kittens, the AAPS was holding a 'cat speed dating event' with reduced adoption prices from 26-28 April. Using questionnaires, owners were matched with compatible pets, categorised as either affectionate 'snuggle bugs', more distant 'Miss/Mr Independents' or the 'party animals'. Then they spent an hour to get to know their felines and to make enquiries to their match-makers. "Cat Speed Dating is a wonderful way for people to think about different personality types, and what type of cat might suit them and their home," Mr Coleman said. Greater Dandenong Council has put a pause on trapping stray and feral cats during 'kitten season' due to a shortage of space at the region's pound. A stretch of warm weather and ready food supplies have created prime breeding conditions for cats, according to the council. As a result, the council's contractor The Lost Dogs Home reached its 260- cat capacity at its Cranbourne and North Melbourne pounds in mid-April. On top of that, its foster carers were offering short-term offsite accommodation for up to 250 cats and kittens. "When intake is high, having 500-plus cats in our care is certainly feasible," a spokesper-
son for The Lost Dogs Home said. The home had advised the council to put on hold its hiring of cat traps for two weeks, with a view of increasing its capacity at Cranbourne, the spokesperson said. Greater Dandenong city planning director Jody Bosman said that the council had stopped trapping cats for a "short period". It had requested people with council traps to not set them until further notice, Mr Bosman said. "Any cats surrendered to Council are still being impounded at the Lost Dogs Home as normal." In the nine months since 1 July, the council had impounded 556 cats - which are typcially ferals, strays in the vast majority.

Free parking on Lonsdale Street By Cam Lucadou-Wells Free parking will be trialled in a bid to reinvigorate Dandenong’s ‘ghost town’ precinct in Lonsdale Street. Greater Dandenong Council is expected to forego up to $350,000 revenue as part of the 12-month trial in the central-business section between Foster and Clow streets. Drivers will still have to abide by parking time-limits in the area. The council will also waive fees for footpath-dining tables and chairs on Lonsdale Street for the next two years. Cr Jim Memeti, who sought the intitiative, said he wanted Lonsdale Street to bounce back to near its heyday levels. In his childhood, his mother wouldn’t let go of his hand as they walked through swarms of people in the main street, Cr Memeti said. “I think it’s going to be fantastic. It is less of a hassle for people who had to stop and find loose change. “It also means the coffers of the retailers will grow.” Other parts of Dandenong’s CBD such as the Market, the Plaza, and the Afghan and Little India precincts have been thriving, a council report stated. However, outside of those “magnet” areas, retailers are struggling. The exodus of seven bank branches from Lonsdale Street had left large vacant spaces though the vacancy rate was in line with other Melbourne shopping strips, the report said. “Put simply, there is little reason for people to go to the non-magnet areas of the Dandenong Activity Centre unless they are accessing a specific destination niche offer.” The council will also create a marketing

Real estate agent Ashton Ashokkumar welcomed free parking as a means of luring back shoppers. At a council meeting on 23 April, Cr Matthew Kirwan said the footpath-dining encouragement package would also work in strips such as Brady Road, Railway Parade and Hemmings Street. He said Lonsdale Street had sections “full to the brim” car parks and other patches of empty car spaces. “Since the tweaking of time-limits last year the situation has improved. Hopefully this

At a council meeting on 23 April, corporate services director Mick Jaensch said individual rate rises will vary "quite wildly" from property to property - depending on valuations. value by less than 5.5 per cent or indeed rose in value, Mr Jaensch said. At the same time industrial and commercial rates will rise by an average 2.78 per cent and commercial rates by 1.65 per cent. A council budget report described the looming challenge of replacing ageing roads, drains and buildings built in the 1960s and 1970s. Rate capping will soon impact on the council's future budgets, the report warned. "The time is soon approaching where Council will either have to make significant changes to its operational services or accept that timelines for new projects will face longer term delays in order to be affordable for Council." An 80-year-old Dandenong North resident set off in hot pursuit of a burglar on Tuesday 16 April. The male intruder had taken off his shoes and snuck inside the Cornelius Street home adjoining the Dandenong Creek floodplains reserve about 7.20pm. In the living room, he stole a handbag just metres away from the resident and his 72-year-old wife, who were sitting at a laptop at the time. The resident chased the burglar out of the house and over the 1.5-metre back fence. In the neighbouring parklands, the two wrestled until the intruder punched the resident in the face. The victim suffered a minor facial injury, police say. The burglar was described as of Caucasian appearance and in his mid-20s to 30s. Dandenong's dirty dozen Twelve vehicles were impounded in Greater Dandenong as part of an Easter road blitz by Victoria Police. During the five-day Operation Nexus period, police detected 263 offences - including 94 speeding drivers - in the municipality. Thirty unregistered vehicles and 12 unlicensed drivers were also detected. Other common offences included mobile phone use (14), disobeying traffic signs/signals (13) as well as nine for drug-driving and six drink-driving. During Easter, three died on Victorian roads including a 19-year-old man who fell from the rear of a ute in Frankston. Across the state, police detected 11.674 offences including 4221 speeding drivers. On average, one in 16 tested drivers were found to be either drink driving or under the influence of illicit drugs. In the wake of the operation, Road Police Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said every driving offence could take a life in a "split second".

Greater Dandenong household rates will rise, on average, by the State Government rate-cap of 2.5 per cent according to the council's 201920 draft budget. For residents, the median rates and waste charge will be $1406 - up by $32.90. It includes an $8 rise in the State Government's landfill levy. The rise comes while median house values in Greater Dandenong fell by 5.5 per cent. The budget's $69 million capital works program devotes $22 million towards finishing the Springvale library and community hub by mid-2020. Four young adults have been arrested soon after a violent robbery outside Dandenong Market. The two victims, aged 39 and 49, were approached by a female in the market's car park off Clow Street about 1.30am on Sunday 21 April. While distracted with her conversation, the victims were attacked by three males. They were kicked, punched and head-butted and felled to the ground, police say. The males allegedly rifled through the victims' pockets, stealing cash and a phone. The four offenders fled in a black Suzuki without number plates, which was intercepted by police a short time later. The stolen items were discovered inside the car, police say. A 25-year-old man, two 21-year-old men and a 21-year-old female were arrested and remanded in custody. The victims were uninjured.

TEDx stories inspire hope Innovative stories and ideas poised to affect real and positive change were shared at Casey’s inaugural TEDx event on Sunday 28 April. The event was part of the INNovation Summit held on the same day at Bunjil Place. Organiser Joanne Law said she hoped the event would “move, delight and inspire“ people to make a difference on a local, national and global scale. The program started with Youth talks: Ideas from the next generation. Among the speakers was Chairo Christian College student and young Pakenham business entrepreneur Danyal Diallo. Last year Grow featured Danyal and his drop shipping gym equipment business, Gymshopen. For TEDx Casey Danyal spoke from experience about being young, being Sudanese and not wanting to be defined by the negative stereotypes associated with his community. His message was one about not conforming to stereotypes and “how you shouldn’t let stereotypes define you, or even worse, limit you". He outlined the four principles he had learnt during his business journey. “I believe that you can achieve your goals and dreams, all you have to do for it to come to reality is you have to believe that you can!" Danyal told the audience. “One of my favourite motivational spears, Evan Carmichael, always says 'believe you can'. Fix your mind on what you want and it’s yours." He also spoke about the danger of conformity, waiting on others and asking for help. “Teamwork makes the dream work." The Main Stage talks in the evening featured a range of speakers, several of them based in the Casey Cardinia Region. Narre Warren business consultant Lana Johnson spoke about the wellbeing contagion. Ms Johnson is a consultant who provides solutions for growing businesses with a focus on strategies, leadership development and culture. She has worked with over 35 organisations from micro businesses to large multi-nationals across a wide range of industries, from agriculture to manufacturing to professional services. She has addressed front-line blue collar workers, office staff, supervisors, senior leaders and boards. In her TEDx address, Ms Johnson spoke about the wellbeing contagion being the spread of wellbeing ideas, attitudes or behaviours in a group. “You don’t need me to tell you that how most of us are living and working is stressing us out. It is taking a toll on our wellbeing and it’s causing many preventable chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes. Mental health conditions are on the rise as well.

Enthusiasm and joy are catchy. “Exercise is socially contagious. For instance, have you ever noticed that when the people you know exercise more, you exercise more? “The best example of this that I know is called Parkrun. This story began in 2004 when a small group of friends decided to begin a weekly 5 kilometre timed run in Bushy Park in the UK. After two years that weekly event at Bushy Park was attracting over 350 runners. People began inviting other people. “The infection spread from there, like wild fire around the world. Today, over 3.5 million people around the world are running or walking Parkrun. “You don’t have to start a global movement to make a difference. Jump on a bandwagon that already exists. Imagine, what would our
world be like if we could elevate the wellbeing of humanity, even just a little? “ Also on the bill was executive director of Pitcher Partners and Pakenham local Vicki Macdermid. In her address, Ms Macdermid explored how as social organisms it is essential to engage in personal face-to-face interactions for our own health and wellbeing and that of society. Ms Macdermid has developed a unique program where she invites participants to engage with horses to understand trust, respect and being fully present. This approach coupled with experiential learning helps the individuals to develop their own ability to connect, ability to explore empathy and their own self-awareness. Horses have played a pivotal role in her personal life and have compelled Vicki to share what horses have taught her. “It is our humanness and ability to adapt that will make the difference to our Emotional Intelligence (EQ) for individuals, teams and organisations, “Ms Macdermid said. “Horses help us to recognise and build our individual, team and organisational EQ, accelerating the learning process and climbing Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. “Adopting leaderful behaviours requires the
ability to recognise what is important to others, the impact we have and how we can invite others to join us to achieve active participation. This challenges the outdated notion of command and control and requires self-awareness in environments that are both familiar and unfamiliar. In today’s technologically advanced world, and one which will continue to shape the way we live and work, it will be even more crucial for us to connect with each other. “Engaging with horses demonstrates what real leadership looks (and feels) like. “ Dr Evita March is a senior lecturer and researcher of psychology at Federation University’s Berwick campus. Her research interests include interpersonal relationships, cyber psychology and personality; specifically, personality traits that predict perpetration of online antisocial behaviours. Her work on predicting the personality traits and motivations of internet ‘trolls’ was an Australian first study, and she has received both national and international recognition for her research on Cyber Hate. Dr March is also involved in projects exploring intimate partner cyber-stalking and the propensity for intimate partner violence. She spoke about understanding traits that predict engaging in online antisocial behaviours being imperative for the development of effective interventions and treatment.

Anzac force By Cam Lucadou-Wells A massive turnout at Dandenong's Anzac Day service was regarded as one of the biggest in recent times. The service at the Pillars of Freedom on 25 April was briefly interjected by a heckler who was jeered by the crowd and subdued by police. Dandenong RSL president John Wells noted that people had a right to disagree and protest in a democracy but an Anzac Day service was not the right time and place for it. The services were regarded as like a funeral, the memorial as a tombstone, Mr Wells said. "This puts it beyond political considerations." Mr Wells said he was surprised by the strong attendance. The day was now a part of the calendar for a diversity of communities. "What was heartening was we're getting a lot of people from a non-Anglo Saxon background. "Some of it is about their inclusion in soci-
ety and embedding themselves in our culture." The Anzac message also resonates in many countries, Mr Wells said. "People had to courage to come here and make a fresh start. "Many of them suffered the same thing as Australians suffered in the big wars. "The underlying principles of Anzac Day speak to all people, not just Australians." Greater Dandenong Roz Blades, as a regular attendee, said the crowd was bigger than any she'd witnessed for Anzac Days in Dandenong. Memorials at Noble Park and Springvale had also been "packed". "Importantly it was the large numbers of youth, the young people who were there - respecting and honouring those who gave us everything. "They were there with their families, remembering their granddad, their uncle, their brother. "You couldn't move with all the people at Dandenong RSL afterwards - there were all ages, all nationalities."

26 April 1999 On Song for Festival Launch
The Dandenong Town Hall was packed for the opening of the 52nd Dandenong Festival of Music and Art for Youth on Thursday night. The public relations officer for festival Mrs Nola Dawson said the level of interest in the opening night had been encouraging. "The hall was as full as I have ever seen, and the people wanted to stay and talk afterwards which always shows a high level of interest," she said. The festival was officially opened by contralto Lauris Elms. Elms who now lives in Sydney, was returning to the area where she performed as a school girl in 1946. Other highlights included the vocal solo from Hallam's Rejeili Paulo and the piano solo from Richard Jackson. All events at the Dandenong Town Hall unless stated in the programme. A special presentation was made to music teacher Mrs Edna Schurman who was attending her 50th festival.

We also monitor gamblers to ensure they are not over-exposing themselves to the machines. Of course, we have no control over these people, and they can leave our venue for another at any time. We also have the relevant signs on the walls advising clients of the dangers of excessive gambling. This RSL has a huge commitment to the veterans and their families not only within the Dandenong region but throughout Victoria, interstate and even veterans residing overseas. We fully provide for our welfare/pensions office in a separate facility which is staffed by
volunteers on a 12-month basis. We know from the positive feedback received from people visiting our RSL that we bring a most positive outlook to Noble Park. We have a government requirement to spend 8.33 per cent of our venue gaming revenue on welfare/pension activities. For the 2017-18 financial year, we spent 10.25 per cent on welfare/pensions. We also donate to other organisations such as schools, sporting activities and ex-service organisations, which is greatly appreciated by these groups. Of course the Alliance for Gambling Reform does not take into account other positive items that the gaming machines support, including wages for all of our staff. Other costs include building maintenance, garden and memorial upkeeps, occupancy costs etc. We open our doors to many groups within the community to utilise our facilities for meetings, dinners etc. Any net surplus goes back into servicing
our RSL loan to ensure our building is up to operating standards. We have just introduced a children's play area, which is greatly appreciated by parents and their children. We also need to make provision for the State Government gaming entitlements for 2022 where our outlay will be $1.4 million. In conclusion I wish to state that I wholeheartedly agree with Club Noble's president in refuting that we are engaging in "activities to increase the amount of money lost by people". Teachers walk off at Noble Park High
1 May 1919 ANZAC Day
Forty one of the 48 teachers at Noble Park High School walked off the job at 1pm yesterday. The teachers were protesting against the employment at the school an unqualified secondary school teacher. The teachers held a meeting at 12.25pm and decided "to stay out until the Education Department takes the 'teacher' out of the school." Immediately after the walk out pupils in senior forms were sent home. There are 1046 pupils at the school. Severn teachers who are not members of the VSTA conducted junior room classes, but it was expected that these children would be sent home from school earlier than normal.
Anzac day was celebrated at Dandenong on Tuesday, when the scholars attending the State School and High School assembled in the grounds of the former, where appropriate addresses were given by Rev H R Buntine, Cr Abbott, Cr Groves MLA, Mr Langford (head teacher high school), Rev E Veal, Mr Talbot (head teacher state school) and Pte F Smith (a former scholar at the state school). There was singing by the children and recitations, and the scholars also gave '"Anzac is the toast," and saluted the flag. The proceedings passed off successfully, and concluded with the National Anthem.

Michelle Newland was 19 when she suffered an asthma attack and died in her mother's arms, depriving her brain of oxygen for 10 minutes. Medicos brought her back to life but by then she had lost the ability to walk, eat, and communicate and was placed in a nursing home. Her family mortgaged their home and cancelled their caravanning holiday to prepare to have Michelle home. More than 10 years after the tragedy, the Dandenong Company last week gave them a caravan.

OPINION Police under-manned Cam's article (Put up or 'move out', 22 April) highlights a serious problem. The police are under-manned and overcommitted. There is little empathy from them, hence the comments ' you should move out'. They are focused on crime, evidence and priorities, with little attention it seems to community safety. The corporate structure seems to lack resources to respond and refer problems to an appropriate section of police. Sri Lanka bombings hit home
Cricketers mourn loss

A Noble Park North cricket club was grieving for a former teammate's unthinkable loss in the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka. In the days since, Sudesh Kolonne has buried his wife Manik Suriaaratchi and 10-yearold daughter Alexandria after they were killed in the suicide blasts in Negombo. Mr Kolonne had been outside parking the car at Easter mass when St Sebastian's church exploded and killed scores of worshippers. He found his mortally wounded daughter and wife on the floor. In all, eight deadly explosions destroyed hotels, churches and public spaces, killing at least 320 people. Silverton Cricket Club's Facebook page is flooded with sympathy for the family. Cricket club vice-president Dean Jones said it was harrowing to think what Mr Kolonne and his family had been through. "Everyone is devastated for them. "He made a big impact on the club with his infectious personality. "He had a smile that lit up the clubrooms." At the time, daughter Alexandria was just two years old. Her death would strike home for any parent, Mr Jones said. "It's just so unfair for him and his family. Mr Jones captain-coached Mr Kolonne in his last two seasons at Silverton in 2010-11 and 2011-12. "When I was appointed, he was the first person I recruited - for his personality and his talents."

Sri Lankan communities in Melbourne's South East were reeling after suicide bombers killed hundreds in churches and hotels in their homeland on Easter Sunday. A shocked Tamil community leader Wicki Vikramasingham said victims of a variety of faiths and nationalities succumbed to the blasts. People were left wondering why it happened, and why churches were the main targets. He said many Sri Lankans in Melbourne were still awaiting news on the fate of family and friends. "This is a very bad day - everybody in the world is very unhappy. "We've suffered enough. The whole nation had suffered economically, physically and spiritually - many lives were lost in civil war and tsunamis. "We're rebuilding again and then it's happening again." At one of the targets St Anthony's Shrine in Colombo, worshippers of Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Christian and Catholic backgrounds would routinely gather for Tuesday and Sunday masses. In a land still healing from a long civil war, St Anthony's was a place that catered for Sinhalese and Tamil alike. It delivered masses in Sinhalese, Tamil and English for gatherings of up to 1000. A Hindu in faith, Mr Vikramasingham was a frequent visitor to St Anthony's when in Colombo. "For the first time, we had been hearing about the bonding and good feeling. "There was no reason to do this. We all want a united Sri Lanka." A huge crowd overflowed from the Dhammasarana Buddhist Temple in Keysborough on Monday 22 April, joining in blessings and prayers for the dead and injured.

Bureks warm our bellies By Cam Lucadou-Wells Twenty years ago the burek - a popular Bosnian crisp layered pastry filled with piping-hot ricotta cheese, beef and cheese or spinach and cheese - landed at Dandenong Market. Few had heard of or had sampled the fare when husband-and-wife Nevruz and Mevlida opened Dandy Burek in a small caravan. The couple had arrived in Australia with little more than a suitcase in 1998, having spent six years in a refugee camp due to the Bosnian wars. Doubters at the time said the burek wouldn't appeal to the masses. They would now have to eat their words. These days, Dandy Burek is iconic, operating out of a larger van and serving burek, cevapi and kranskies to a regular line of loyal customers including New Zealanders, Europeans or Asians. It also brings together diners of Bosnian,
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL Serbian and Croatian backgrounds. One from Queensland often picks up two frozen bureks to take home each week. The couple's children, who were born in a refugee camp, are running a coffee van Froth and a burger/kransky eatery Grilled at the market. Nevruz, a former fruiterer in Bosnia, is the well-known face at the front of Dandy Burek, while Mevlida handmakes the food behind the scenes. According to their daughter Elvira, the bu-
reks require two days of patient preparation. The key to making the thin, crunchy layers of pastry remains a closely-guarded family secret. "Only three know the recipe - my mother, my sister and myself," Elvira says. "It's made with love." Served hot and oozing with dense highquality fillings, they certainly warm the belly during a winter's breakfast or lunch. Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate. His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June. The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said. “I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement. “It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people. “It’s a view that I formed very early on.” Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17. “The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was
throughout those two years,” he said. “It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me. “That’s why I got involved in the local community.” Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre. “The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.” There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer. “That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said. “That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.” He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014. “That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said. Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.
He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings. The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up. The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old. He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands. Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business. “I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said. “I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that. “I really enjoyed the community stuff. “Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

The Liberal Party has installed an eleventhhour candidate in Bruce, just ahead of the declaration of federal election nominations on 24 April. John MacIsaac, an engineer, will contest the seat held by the ALP's Julian Hill. Bruce was a marginal seat at the 2016 election, but is now notionally a Labor-safe seat due to a boundary re-distribution. It no longer covers conservative suburbs such as Glen Waverley and Wheelers Hill but has added an ALP-friendly region of Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Hallam and Narre Warren. Other Bruce candidates are Tim Boyanton of Fraser Anning's Conservative National Pary, Mubahil Ahmed of the Clive Palmer-led United Australia Party and Rhonda Garad of The Greens.
They are company director George Hua (Liberal), Jin Luan (United Australia Party), Jess Gonsalvez (The Greens), Peter Dorian (Rise Up Australia Party) and Dennis Bilic (Sustainable Australia). Hotham, a traditional Labor stronghold, has become more marginal due to electoral boundary changes.

Objections mounting over mosque plans By Brendan Rees Narre Warren North residents are preparing to fight plans for a mosque proposed for their township. The Saarban Islamic Trust has submitted plans to Casey Council for a mosque at 365 -367 Belgrave-Hallam Road, Narre Warren North but residents have cited concerns of traffic, and the building impacting their "picturesque township." The plan consists of a main mosque building featuring an open prayer hall, and an ancillary building which would provide a recreational space, a meeting area and office for the Imam. It's also proposed to provide 226 car spaces, and cater up to 372 patrons with large numbers expected to gather during Friday afternoon prayer, festivals and special events. Neighbour Terry Ryan who has lived in the area for more than 20 years, says the mosque was inappropriate and "we'll do anything we can to stop it." "I just don't want to live next to a volume of block of buildings," he said. "It's also not a building for the locals, it doesn't enhance the foothills, the list goes on and on." "The next question everybody asks me 'what you would do if it was a Catholic church or a Coles supermarket?' And the answer is it could be a cathedral or a Coles - I don't care, don't want it," he said. "We bought the property out there for a rural lifestyle." Mr Ryan also expressed his concern about the hours of prayer operation proposed to start at 4am during summer. The plans come after Council knocked back

Cr Rosalie Crestani said about 300 people had already objected to the renewed plans with concerns it would be inappropriately placed within in a green wedge semi-rural zone. Other concerns, she said, were traffic and safety issues, and also the social and cultural impact to an "otherwise quiet and picturesque township at the foothills to the Dandenongs." "I have conveyed to them that I take all feedback on board and intend to review the material associated with the application as well as the report following the application's planning review," Cr Crestani said. Driver rams police cars A man has been arrested after allegedly ramming two police vehicles in Dandenong early on Friday 19 April. Police say officers on a routine patrol spotted a "suspect" vehicle at Kirkham Road just before 1am. Both police cars stopped behind the vehicle. The vehicle was driven up an apartment block's driveway then reversed at speed into the police cars. Two officers took evasive action to avoid being struck by the vehicle, police say. The accused driver continued ramming the police cars multiple times, then drove up the driveway at speed, smashed through a fence and into the side of a house. The driver fled on foot on Lenaro Street, where he was OC-sprayed and arrested.

Labor has pledged to help Hallam Senior College cater for the popularity boom in female Aussie Rules. If it wins government, the ALP will provide $40,000 towards upgraded female-friendly changerooms for the school's AFLW program. Bruce incumbent MP Julian Hill said the upgrade would allow more young women to play AFLW. "(It is) fostering team work, and improving levels of exercise and fitness needed to assist in the improvement of academic performance." The $60,000 project would include extra changerooms, showers, toilets and a medical room, as well as extra storage space for equipment. They would be used each school day, as well as after-hours, for training and games. The changerooms are hoped to be open in time for the footy season starting March/April 2020. Principal Gregory McMahon said the current changerooms were too small and limited to accommodate female Aussie-Rules sides of up to 25 players. "They don't reflect the change in the women's sport. "We run a very big sports pathway program, including AFL womens for about 40 players. It's probably the biggest AFLW girls program in the southern-metro area. "It's booming. For our girls, it's fantastic to be playing a reasonable level of representative footy." The school set up its human-movement program and Sports Academy to provide pathways and opportunities for students with sporting-career aspirations.

Stocking up for Ramadan Dates, bottled water from Mecca, electronic clocks, plain clothing and lipstick are in demand in the lead-up to Ramadan 2019. Muslims start observing the holy month of fasting from 5 May. Abdullah Tamuryani, store manager at Modesty Collection, said the requests come thick-and-fast about a week prior to Ramadan. The most popular item are dates, Zam Zam water from Mecca and an Azan clock that can be pre-set for prayer time. Other items that are often requested are plain prayer clothing, religious books and Middle Eastern perfumes and incense. The store, which is at Armada Dandenong Plaza, also stocks Halal-safe make-up including lipstick, face powder and mascara. Dandenong Grocery Market store manager Sara Hamid said customers sought specific foods up to 10 days before Ramadan. "As a retailer there are certain things you have to have in stock prior to Ramadan such as dates, pita bread, refrigerated dips such as hummus, a variety of yoghurt, rice, cans of chickpeas and foul - a high fibre bean." At Armada Dandenong Plaza, a large number of retailers offer Halal-safe food and products, including A La Turko, Chunky Charlies, Donut King, Dragon Pho, Fresh & Tasty, Green Village, Halal Butcher, Ivan's Deli, Nandos, Roshni's Indian Delights, Sandwich Chefs,

By Nick Creely In a stunning development in the Southern Football League, the result from a Round 2 clash between Lyndhurst and Moorabbin has been officially overturned after much controversy over the final scoreline. After the Lightning and Kangaroos clashed on Saturday 13 April in Southern's Division 4 Seniors grade, the match was officially deemed a one-point victory to Moorabbin, 10.9 (69) to 10.8 (68). However, under by-law 26.1 in Southern's By-Laws, which states that "A player, member club, league registered umpire, director of umpiring, league official or a board member, may lodge a written complaint/protest with the CEO concerning any act or matter", Lyndhurst submitted a protest to the league after it was adamant it had actually won the game by nine points, a stunning 10-point difference. After an extensive investigation that looked into the match videos, timekeepers, goal umpiring and other related factors, the league has confirmed that the final score was in fact Lyndhurst 10.8 (68) to Moorabbin 9.5 (59), and in a statement on the league website said that full points will now be awarded to the Lightning. "It was established that each club had a timekeeper present for the duration of the game and we are satisfied that both clubs had an official looking over the timing of the match and therefore determine that the timings did not have an influence on the game, however the scoreboard did, which was also controlled from the timekeepers box," the league said. "Each timekeeper kept separate cards that had the same mistakes. It is also apparent that the goal umpires did not perform their duty in the correct manner. "After taking all this into consideration, it is clear that Lyndhurst won the game and we have awarded the game to Lyndhurst un-

Miriam brilliantly won the inaugural running of the $14,500 ANZAC Appeal Cup at Sandown Park last Wednesday, 24 April. The $3.70 second favourite was perfectly drawn in Box 1 and the inside draw proved pivotal as she was able to hold her position on the rail as the speed dogs drawn on her outer crossed to the rail through the first turn. Settling in an ideal position one back on the fence, Miriam took advantage as leaders Shanlyn Georgie and Courting rolled away from the fence down the back straight, railing through to take the lead and power to a 1.75 length victory in a slick 29.43. The win was her 10th career victory and first since resuming from a three-month break, and trainer Bill McMahon couldn't have been happier. "It was a super run, a really super run," he said. "I'm really happy with her and how's she's going at the present time and just hope it can keep going." The $10,000 winner's cheque was the biggest of Miriam's career, however the cause for
which the race was run - the ANZAC Appeal made the win all the more special, especially with members of McMahon's family serving in the defence forces. "My eldest son is in the army. He's based in Adelaide so it means a lot to win a race like this for him. "My great grand-father was in the First and Second World Wars too, so to win a race with this prestige is pretty special." In running the inaugural ANZAC Appeal Cup, the club paid tribute to Brian Dunne from Noble Park RSL together with Vice President, Ray McCarthy. It was their support of the concept that got the event off the ground and the club hopes will become a great tradition. A solemn ANZAC service took place prior to the running of the Cup with Bugler John Mansfield performing 'The Last Post', the ANZAC Ode was recited and a minute's silence to recognise the men and women who have given so much in the services for the nation. In keeping with the ANZAC tradition, games of Two-Up were played during the evening for funny money and were greatly enjoyed by the patrons.
