OUR SUSTAINABILITY NEEDS WORK BY MARGARET MACCOLL An investigation by CSIRO into the establishment of a Sustainability Institute in Noosa has revealed there is plenty of sustainability activity, research and investment already happening in the region but what is lacking is the coordination of it. The CSIRO study looked at sustainability institutes nationally and internationally
and identified the successes and failures of various models. Alongside their work Council officers put together a summary of local organisations engaged in research and action around sustainability. The results showed a lack of coordination which meant data and research was not being collated or shared and there was a lack of a strategic direction to identify key challenges.
Council officers recommend Council take on the role to coordinate and collaborate the actions and research already taking place across the region through engagement with organisations already working in this space and investigate establishing a web based portal to capture information. Officers also recommend a further report be undertaken to develop a strategic
agenda for potential research, action and investment and the outcome of this may lead to the formation of a Noosa specific Institute. The study recommends that Council continue to advance the concept of a Sustainability Institute. This matter is on Council's agenda for discussion this month. ●
BATTERS READY IN PINK AS COUNCILLORS TAKE ON THE REST It's not The Ashes but if you've ever wanted to see Noosa Councillors dressed in their finery (pink tutus) to challenge their constituents then head to Kin Kin this Saturday where battle lines will be drawn in the annual Pink Stumps Day. Kin Kin community spokeswoman Anita Poteri said the Pink Stumps Day provided an opportunity for the local community to participate in the spirit, energy and international phenomenon of the Pink Test. "By bringing the magic home it raises vital funds to make it a bit easier for families experiencing breast cancer," she said. "It's a great way to get all the Kin Kinians and Noosa Councillors together to have fun for a great cause. "And it's always a hoot seeing our Mayor Tony Wellington and Council CEO Brett de Chastel decked out in pink tutus." The event raises funds for the McGrath Foundation which aims to ensure every family experiencing breast cancer would have access to a breast care nurse for free no matter where they lived. At present there is a McGrath

NEW LAWS PROPOSED TO GOVERN SIGNAGE Noosa Council intends under its new planning scheme to bring in two new local laws to regulate both temporary and permanent advertising signage. The proposed laws will identify signs that are "prohibited, permitted as self-assessable or permitted with approval". Under the proposal new advertising signs will have to meet a new approval process and incur an annual licence, while existing signs will need to meet the requirements of Council's advertising audit. The future of signage under the new Noosa Plan is under discussion in this

month's Council meetings. Council papers state its aim is to "avoid "big city" symbols such as large and excessive advertising signs to maintain the character, "look and feel" and amenity of Noosa Shire .. (but) despite this, there has been a noticeable increase in advertising signs throughout Noosa Shire, a result of new development, the proliferation of temporary signs and compliance issues". Council officers recommend that under local law processes the proposed local laws are put out for public consultation and state government consultation. ●

CITY MEETS THE COUNTRY Despite torrential rain more than 300 visitors, many from Brisbane, paid a visit on Saturday to local farms as part of the Cooloola Farm Trail, and even more visited in perfect weather on Sunday. Farmers opened their properties to the visitors who were thrilled to be able to walk around rural properties, come up close to farm animals and see a working farm in action. It was the third year for the event and the most popular to date. Alpaca farmer Maureen Piggott, who owns one of the district's oldest farms (Lot No. 3) said farmers desperately needed the support of the community to be sustainable.
Alpacas roaming free are a rare sight for city dwellers. She said several community groups including Country Noosa, FAN, Slow Food Noosa and Permaculture Noosa were working together to ensure the survival of local farmers and educate urban dwellers about the work involved in farming. ●

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE BY ABBEY CANNAN magine yourself alone, in an aircraft 10,000 feet in the air, gliding with no engine. To most, this is a nightmare, but for Lisa Trotter of Peregian Beach, this is where she feels most at home. The sport of gliding is an exhilarating, spectacular yet serene flying experience. Gliders take to the air like birds with wings outstretched, soaring on rising air currents, immersed in three-dimensional space and flying silently with an eagle's view of the world. Lisa is a current world, continent and national record holder in long distance flying, gliding an incredible 1026.8 kilometres non-stop, and in January next year she will represent Australia at the World Gliding Championships. Far from the heights of gliding, Lisa is a psychologist in her own practice in Peregian Beach, where she has lived with her husband for the past 15 years after relocating from Melbourne. Lisa, who is a member of the Kingaroy Soaring Club, said she couldn't believe it the day she broke a world record. "It felt amazing. In 2013, I spent two weeks at Tocumwal making attempts to break a declared triangle distance record which had been held since 1986 by Andy Pybus from NSW. On the last possible day that I could reasonably make an attempt, I took off in not ideal conditions because it was a bit too windy. No-one else made

an attempt on that day and after the first couple of hours of my ten-hour flight, I thought that I would be too slow to be able to complete the distance but pushed on deciding that I would go as far as I could and enjoy myself regardless. It seems that persistence pays off," she said. It takes a lot of dedication to be up there with the best in the world. "Apart from developing flying skills so that you can use thermal energy efficiently to travel a long distance, I had to be able to read the weather well so that I could pick the right day and plan the optimal track to take. I also needed to make many attempts and have a great crew of people helping me," she said. With an airline pilot as a father, it's easy to understand why Lisa had an interest in aviation from an early age. "I was in my late teens when I trained at a flying school at Essendon Airport to be a pilot. I had ambitions to become an airline pilot myself, but discovered that wasn't possible for women at that time, so settled for recreational flying," she said. She first started gliding in her early 20's after doing a course at a gliding club. "It usually takes people about a week to learn to fly solo, but I already had a pilot licence, so it took me a couple of days," she said. Some gliders have engines, but Lisa prefers to fly her glider without one. "It is very satisfying to cover large distances over many hours purely on the

energy in the atmosphere. An aircraft doesn't need an engine to fly - it's the wings that make them fly." Despite what you may think, Lisa said gliders are quite safe as the aircraft and training is very good. Each year there are thousands of flights with very few incidents or accidents Australia has an enviable safety record. "But I have had reason to feel some concern a couple of times when I found myself a little closer than comfortable to a thunderstorm with lightening," she said. You might also be wondering how gliders always manage to land in the right place without an engine. "I don't!" Lisa said, "That is half the fun." "It is such an adventure flying over the country side wondering if you are going to make an unexpected visit to a farmhouse or not. Most of the time we do get home, but landing in a paddock is not a problem." Lisa said the basic skills needed to fly a glider are similar in complexity to driving a car. "Gliders like a power plane are quite stable and easy to keep straight and level. It takes a bit of practice though to learn how to do a coordinated turn and smooth landing. It's a lot of fun learning. It becomes even more fun when you develop skills to be able to travel long distances," she said. With the World Gliding Championships fast approaching, Lisa said that although she is trying to keep her cool, she is jumping out of her skin with excitement.
"It is such an amazing opportunity to fly with the best in the world and I am sure there will be plenty of adventure. I have just arrived back from a week of training with the team. We talked about teamwork, weather, terrain and tactics. I try and do as much practise as I can, so I fly two to four-hour tasks most weekends and I will compete in the Australian National Championships later in the year as preparation," Lisa said. About 60 pilots coming from as far as Perth and Alice Springs will compete in the National Gliding Championships, which will be held at Tocumwal near the Murray River. "I have done a number of international competitions in Germany and in the USA, but Australia has excellent weather for gliding so, I travel to competitions in NSW, Victoria or SA during December and January each year," Lisa said. This is the first time that the Women's World Gliding Championship (WWGC) has been held in Australia, far from the event's usual location in Europe. The 10th WWGC will be held at Lake Keepit near Tamworth NSW in January 2020 and there will be 14 countries represented and about 50 pilots competing. This year Australia was able to select nine women to compete in the Australian team for the championships, with three in each class; Club, Standard and 18m. All women have excellent soaring skills and experience at the highest level, which noosatoday.com.au
Lisa Trotter speaks well for the standard of women soaring pilots in Australia. Lake Keepit Soaring Club is located on the north west slopes of New South Wales and is considered one of the premier gliding locations in Australia. When she's not competing, Lisa's favourite thing about gliding is being in nature. "I love flying over beautiful terrain and among the clouds, sometimes joined by an eagle or even pelicans. It is also fascinating from a technical point of view and I really like the social side as well," she said. And it's not just gliding that Lisa is into, she loves all things outdoors. "I love swim squad with Jan Croft at the Noosa Aquatic Centre and the Park Run at Noosaville. I also spend a lot of time swimming in the ocean at main beach and walking or running in the Noosa National Park," she said. The love of aviation seems to run in the family, as Lisa's 32-year-old step-son Michael also flies gliders and para-gliders. With Mother's Day this weekend, maybe they will spend the day gliding. "We have had some wonderful times as a family and it was always easy to be a parent because he was such a good kid. As a parent, one of the things I learnt is to put the relationship first and not sweat the small stuff," Lisa said. â—? noosatoday.com.au

CHARITY GOLF DAY A BIG HIT BY ABBEY CANNAN This year's annual BOQ Maroochydore Golf Classic was held on Friday 3 May at Noosa Springs Golf Resort & Spa, with special guest Australian golfing legend Jack Newton OAM. Jack wasn't the only big name at the event, teeing off alongside AFL legend and long-time partner of the event Robert "Dipper" DiPierdomenico and sporting stars Jack Reed, Michael Hancock, Paul Dyer and Ali Brigginshaw of the Broncos, and former Wallaby and Kangaroo Michael O'Connor. The big day out on the greens raised vital
funds for SunnyKids charity, with a lunch hosted by former Brisbane Lions' player Richard Champion and entertainment by grand illusionist Matt Hollywood. Since joining forces in 2012, BOQ Maroochydore has raised more than $200,000 for locally founded charity SunnyKids. This year BOQ Maroochydore is partnering with the Brisbane Broncos to raise money for the SunnyKids Mentoring Through Sport program, which is delivered to schools across the region. CEO of SunnyKids, Chris Turner said the
golf day means much more than a chance to meet for business networking, as it brings like minds together as a village to support the 5,000 children at risk in our region. "This golf day will make a difference in ways most people do not realise; it can mean that up to 100 disengaged young people will be reconnected at school, with their families and in their communities," Chris said. "A sense of connection and belonging is crucial to kids so that they can fulfil their true potential, and this funding will help us to achieve that via the Mentoring Through Support program." ●
A quarter of all 27 drivers drug tested during a police operation on Noosa North Shore over the Easter holiday period registered a positive reading and were prosecuted for driving under the influence of drugs but there was not one drink driving charge from 2652 random breath tests conducted. Police tactical, road and beat units worked together over the Easter holiday period to reduce traffic incidents on Noosa North Shore while police and National Parks staff united to protect the dunes. Noosa Heads senior sergeant Ben Carroll said during the operation police stopped the traffic from driving along the beach at high tide to prevent previous incidents where cars had driven over dunes to escape the waves. Sen sgt Carroll said there were 56 other traffic infringement notices issued speeding (28), not wearing seat belts (6), defective vehicles (4) and the rest for a mix of infringements. Two people were charged with traffic matters and a number of vehicles were searched for drugs with four drug charges laid. ●

ART AND CRAFT EXTRAORDINAIRE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Milliner and crochet tutor Janelle Turley admits she is rarely without a (crochet) hook in her hands which was hardly a surprise to visitors at the Noosa Arts and Crafts autumn show who were able to view her extensive collection on show. A former hairdressing teacher Janelle has always loved craft work. Her magnificent hats and colourful rugs joined a diverse range of artworks and craft on display. Alongside Janelle's work lies the fabulous crochet, knitting and felt work of Alexis Heitmann. Having knitted and crocheted since she was about 10 years old, Alexis' experience shows through in her exquisite work and her creativity shines in her felt creations. The show also has on display a wide range of art and pottery including the stunning blue bowls made by Domi Cohen. Boomerang Bags in various colours and
sizes and made by volunteers to encourage residents to be plastic free is also on sale. The wonderful display of arts and crafts which raises money for Noosa Arts and Crafts was spearheaded by president Gabi Dick. On the weekend high tea has been made available for purchase to guests courtesy of a team of women including Judy Chipperfield. Judy was a country girl who went to Melbourne and landed a job with the Elizabeth Arden salon. In the evenings she worked a second job in a restaurant. Judy and her husband moved permanently from Melbourne to their favourite holiday spot, Noosa, in 1984. In 2007 Judy and a friend opened Pomona's first high tea cafe called Two Old Ladies and ran it until 2013, having a "lot of fun" along the way. The Noosa Arts and Crafts show will run until 10 May at Wallace House, 1 Wallace Drive, Noosaville. â—?

BOOKS INSPIRING ROTARY PROJECTS TO TURN A NEW PAGE The annual Rotary Noosa Daybreak book fest was hailed a huge success. Each day of the three day event a steady stream of book hunters filed into the Noosa Leisure Centre in search of books from fiction, biography and reference to cooking, history and travel as well as a selection of children's books. There were 30,000 books donated, many from the State and Noosa libraries, to the fundraising event and a raffle held with funds raised to be donated to benefit mental health research and suicide prevention. â—?

MONEY NOT BEING SPENT Because the Noosa Council committee meetings aren’t live streamed here’s some information from the agenda for services and organisation committee meeting on 7 May. There are six third quarter updates which show an inability to complete yearly budgets. Of interest is the capital works budget which still requires 28 per cent of the yearly budget to be completed in the last two months; major discrepancies include canals and waterways (30 per cent of $424K), community facilities (30 per cent of $1.1 million), corporate buildings (6 per cent of $780K), stormwater drainage (41 per cent of $529K), transport infrastructure (54 per cent of $2.1million), asset management (23 per cent of $840K), fleet replacement (57 per cent of $1million), IT (52 per cent of $800K), planning scheme (43 per cent of $1.1 million). PLANES ABOVE BATS I can clearly understand that the people complaining about the proposed flight path for the new runway at Sunshine Coast may have a valid complaint. However, having lived next to London Airport and Brisbane Airport I would have to say that I would much prefer to put up with the aircraft noise, than the all day (and sometimes nights) screeching, smell and mess of up to half a million bats that we have been dealing with for the past six years. Noosa Council have been completely disinterested in taking the slightest action to reduce the number of bats, e.g. by trimming some of the trees, reducing the area for the bats to roost. They have been patronising, and pretty much ignore us altogether now, which, as ratepayers is just not good enough. I might add that there were no flying foxes here when these houses were built 17 years ago, or when we bought our house, and in fact it appears that the trees were actually planted by the council, so they have an enormous responsibility for taking some action to care for their residents. BELIEVE IT I read that Paul (Noosa Today, 2 May) doesn’t believe that sea levels are rising because in the last 46 years, he hasn’t noticed it. Paul, then, almost certainly doesn’t believe in bacteria because he can’t see them, or that the Earth is a sphere, because he can’t see the curve, or that there are moons around Jupiter

Amateur observers who depend on their wit and intuition often make mistakes about scientific knowledge because they don’t understand how scientific instruments are used. Sea levels are measured with satellites and with gauges and the data are compared. The most recent data from NASA (Uh-oh. You can’t trust them. They are scientists!) shows that since 1993, average sea levels have increased by 90mm or by 3.3 millimetres per annum. This not something that the human eye can easily observe, but it will eventually make a difference. It was probably not wise for a candidate to make a prediction of how deep the water would be in Hastings Street in 2050 because the models don’t pretend to predict a timeline for sea level rises but they are more like a warning that your mechanic might give you about needing to repair your brakes. If you don’t fix your brakes, you are likely to have an accident. Just can’t tell when. It is interesting to note that many climate change scientists predict that the rate of sea level rise will increase, which means that the so-far linear rate will soon accelerate. Then, Paul, you might start to notice it.

As an ecologist, I have noticed the changes in flowering of trees, the calling and breeding of amphibians and birds, the distribution of rainfall and the activity of insects and they all support the conclusion that the climate is changing rapidly. In any other period since humans have been on Earth, such changes would not be noticeable. Australia is one of only 2 nations on Earth where climate change action is a partisan issue. WATER FOR MINES Delving into the mind of an Adani supporter who works with the mining corporation in a government capacity (who I cannot name) was a fascinating experience. The biggest gripe he has with Australia is its treatment of Adani (he called it a “witchhunt”) and the concerns he says that this could cause future relationships with foreign enterprise; especially that with Indian corporations. He said Australia “is shooting itself in the foot” with its appallingly negative, targeted and embarrassingly racist approach to the Adani mine. He finds it alarming that the Chinese mine “literally next door to Adani” is flying under the radar, as are the Gina Rinehart and Clive Palmer mining projects. He believes that Australia should be the last nation on earth to stop mining because “we are so good at it,” and we mine in such a way that has little environmental consequence due to stringent regulations. He said other countries don’t legislate environmental impact assessments, nor do they monitor and audit mining as closely as Australia does. Most mining projects are based on the Galilee Basin due to the prevalence of coal in this region. The Galilee Basin’s connectivity to the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) allows for access to a seemingly unlimited supply of groundwater (in the short term). Mining requires a huge amount of water. According to my source, thanks to nearby dams, the GAB won’t be the sole water sup-
plier for the Adani project. The mines have unlimited water access to the nearby dams. He believes the mining companies are unfairly treated with regards to water access as they pay for water access at far higher rates than that of the farmers in the same region thanks to water subsidies provided to the farmers. He said farming, especially cotton farming, requires more GAB water than the Adani mine. While he likes the idea of nuclear power for Australia, he believes that there is no point for the government to invest in nuclear power, as we don’t have the expertise on the ground to manage or maintain a plant (unless we can source this from overseas). The French are so successful with their nuclear plants as they have so few “meddling greenies,” whereas countries like Germany and Australia would face backlash from the left for considering such a project. Some issues he had with Adani was their treatment and belittling of women and “cultural issues”. When asked to elaborate on this, he said that Adani was used to having free rein on whatever development project they set their hand to in Asia and they’re not used to being told to toe the line. He said they were incredibly difficult to work with, especially in government negotiations. He said another firm were bullies and were doing more damage to the environment than Adani, but this is not publicised. Lucas mines (Chinese owned) have been granted approval to start in the Galilee Basin despite the fact they don’t have a rail line. He believes they will just stockpile the coal until the railway is complete (which they really shouldn’t be doing). Railway lines should always be built before the mine. He is concerned that the Chinese and the USA are feeding fake news and reports to “soft-minded Australian greenies” about the environmental damage mines cause so that Australia’s economy collapses. Environmental issues were obviously not a concern for the Adani supporter. Mining is catastrophic to the environment. The Galilee Basin mines are located in a region that had experienced prolonged drought. While the GAB is one of the largest underground water reserves in the world, it will not withstand continued excessive use. Water pressure from this basin has been on a steady decline. Granddad spoke to me about how much the water pressure from the basin noticeably dropped in his lifetime (when he was managing his sheep property), and how deeply concerned he is for its longevity. What is troubling is the water licence granted to Adani puts no limit on the water it can take from the GAB. No limit whatsoever, on a limited resource. Perhaps I am a “soft-minded greenie,” but from what I have seen, read, and studied, I am of the firm belief that mining in Australia is unequivocally not sustainable. Brigid Muir, Cooroy

The poor bloke then had to find another way to keep his name in the public eye. Good luck to all of the communities in that area. Cancer Council Queensland Noosa Branch chairperson, Annie Evans said it was always lovely to see so many community members get behind the cause at the morning tea. "We are expecting 140 people and there are still a few tables left, so get in and book now before they sell out," she said. "'I'd like to thank Phil and Sarah from Noosa Boathouse who have kindly donated the River Room for the event over the past four years."
Shoppers will be able to find an array of leather goods - handbags, riding attire and country clothing - including brand name goods from RM Williams, Levis, Thomas Cook and Ralph Lauren and plenty of denim from Thursday 9 May at 8.30am until Saturday 11 May at 2.30pm at the Cooroy Memorial Hall, 23 Maple Street, Cooroy.

GREAT EFFORT FROM ALL DRAGONS It was a great effort by all Dragons who ensured the club had another very successful home game's day, according to Eumundi Dragons club president Doug Toms. "Once again you have demonstrated what being a Dragon is all about - enjoying the game for what it is and always striving to be that little bit better every time you take to the field, he said. "The Dragon's name continues to be respected by all other clubs on the coast whether after a win or a loss."
U10S MATCH REPORT BY U10'S MANAGER PAMELA CAMPBELL-JONES This weekend saw the Dragons take on a speedy Brothers team at home. The boys were looking set after training well on Friday, and they took to the field rearing to go. It was a much-improved Dragons team this weekend, there were some impressive defense and an increased level of intensity. The Brothers team bought their A-Game and ran away with a convincing win, but the
Dragons should feel proud of their efforts. Jai Clifford was awarded Man of the Match and Craig Yaxley was awarded for strong leadership. With another week of solid training, we are bound to see this team getting stronger and more cohesive. Go Dragons!
U8S BY U8'S TEAM MANAGER ANDREW HILLHOUSE The lessons learned in training are starting to be expressed in the teams game and today the Eumundi Dragons U8s started putting it together. Their mauling and rucking were strong with close running up the middle by Josh V, Josh K, Jasper and Brooklyn which yielded a number of tries and meters. GREAT EFFORT AGAINST STRONG OPPONENTS U9 Noosa Fins V Matthew Flinders Coach Shane was super proud of the improvement in defence this week. Playing against the Flinders Force can be a good challenge and the U9 Fins met the challenge. Hamish Payne was awesome at training and on the field and Cody Monk had his best game ever and had some fantastic runs. Our captain of the day Mack let his team by good example. U15 Noosa Dolphins (7) V West Bulldogs (Brisbane)(24) This was our first grading game as being part of the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union. The boys traveled to Toowong and came up against strong opposition in West Bulldogs. Great game by our boys, even if we didn't come home with a win, its our first proper run out since September. Should very proud of themselves and see great things for the season. ●
MIXED RESULTS FOR NOOSA’S GOLF CROQUET EFFORTS NOOSA CROQUET CLUB - APRIL PENNANT AND SHIELD GOLF CROQUET RESULTS The Noosa teams had mixed results in their second round of the Golf Croquet Pennant and Shield competitions during April. The Shield competition for the higher handicaps had a narrow win, drawing with Nambour on games won, five games each, but won on countback on hoops scored, managing 10 more hoops on the day. Mike Studley won both his singles games, and Sheila Moncrieff and Julie Terry won their
doubles. Julie also had a win in her singles. The Shield team now has two wins. They play Bribie Island early May. Unfortunately, the Pennant team was not as successful. The lower handicap players had a bad loss to Bribie Island, losing eight games to two. Niven Gugich won one of his singles games and paired with Colin Hindson to win the doubles. The other games were close, but Noosa players went down to a determined Bribie team. Noosa, last year's winners in this competition, is off to a bad start for the year. songs. So well named. But the rest of our time at Xamach Dos "eco-resort" in the Sian Ka'an was wonderful. The only guests, we swam in the azure Caribbean beyond the weed beds, ate Francesca's delicious home-cooked meals and sipped her incredible mango margaritas. Ah, Mexico, you never know what's around the corner. A flight delay, a missed connection, a missing bag and an over-priced cab ride later we're at a cool little boutique hotel a couple of blocks back from the beautiful deep bay of Zihuatanejo, an old school charmer on the Pacific Coast halfway between the better-known Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta. I've been here briefly once before, just long enough to know I had to come back and get to know Zihuat a bit better. As the sun sets over the bay we stroll the
walkway between Playa Madera and Playa Municipal, before settling into a meal of ceviche and tacos washed down with good local wine at the Bistro Del Mar. In the morning we're up with the sun for a dip in the bay, a long walk and a fruit and coffee breakfast watching the fishermen unload their catches on blankets on the sand while the local restaurateurs haggle for the best deal. A beautiful little port, and still pretty much off the radar despite an international airport just down the road. Our hotel is so small and tucked away that Corky Carroll can't find it, and we leave for La Saladita a lot later than expected, but what the hey, Mexican time. It's been five years since we last stayed with the multiple US surf champ and noted musician, and his lovely Mexican wife Raquel at their beachfront hacienda, but not much has changed with the house or with Corky. A
little older, a little deafer maybe, still a barrel of laughs and still surfing the point every day on a stand-up paddleboard despite chronic back issues. Sadly, we've barely settled in when news comes through that the great surfer Mike Doyle has succumbed to Lou Gehrig's Disease. While not unexpected, the passing of "Iron Mike", as close to invincible as a surfer gets, hits home hard, particularly for Corky, who grew up under his wing at Seal Beach, California. Towards sunset, neighbour Tim Dorsey, a longtime Seal Beach lifeguard and big wave riding buddy of Mike's, strolls up the beach chomping on a stogie, and we sit around as the orb drops towards the horizon, raising our glasses to one of surfing's true greats. Up on the point, big long interval sets are rolling through, and the competitors in the Mexi Log Fest are getting their last rides for the day. For us, that will be manana. ●

The directions were clear enough: proceed down the single dirt road to Punta Allen until you reach kilometer 32. The only problem was there were virtually no kilometer signs and we didn't know where the reading began from. We had a phone number but down the dirt track there was no signal. People we hailed down on the road had never heard of Cabana Balam, the name we had been given for our accommodation. Blank looks and apologies, but no progress. When we finally arrived at the sleepy fishing village of Punta Allen, we realized we had come too far, so back up the pot-holed road with eyes fixed for a sign, any sign. Finally, in the heat of the day we spotted a Km 32 sign hidden in the undergrowth at the side of the road. A battered sign next to it said "Xamach Dos", not what we were looking for, but we took the narrow track in through the jungle to investigate. We pulled up in a sandy car park with a few thatchedroof bungalows in front looking out over a beautiful white sand Caribbean beach. The Mexican manager greeted us warmly and confirmed that this indeed was where we would find Cabana Balam. Francesca, who had no English, led us across the sand to the edge of the jungle and into a windowless hovel through a broken flyscreen door. Inside was an unmade bed and little else. I asked: "This is Cabana Balam?" "Si, si, Cabana Balam," she said. I tried to convey in my pidgin Spanish that there was no way we could spend the night here. I pointed to a cabana in the middle of the clearing with an unhindered view of the sea and catching the breeze through its big windows. I suggested to Francesca in sign language that we would be happier over there. She showed us through the fine room with an upstairs viewing deck, then dialled a number and handed me her phone. "So you want an upgrade?" the gruff voice of the gringo owner said. "Well," I said, "I wouldn't quite put it like that. For the money we'd just like somewhere that's fit for human habitation." He grunted and hung up. Francesca helped us with our bags and we moved into the good cabana. Business as usual. I guess they try the upgrade scam on everyone. That night I looked up the meaning of "balam" and discovered that it is a muchdreaded supernatural being in Mayan religion, a nocturnal, long-headed old fellow who prowls the cornfields whistling scary

AND IT’S OVER TO THE LIFEGUARDS This weekend when the flags go up our beaches will be under control of our brothers in surf the Lifeguards. We wish them well and call on the general public to observe the flagged areas and remember that if you have a problem just talk to the Lifeguards. Talking to you is part of the job. While thinking of beach safety just a word of caution; if when walking the beautiful Noosa National Park or any other scenic area and you are thinking of taking photographs of family or friends standing on the rock areas close to the surf-DON'T! It is sad but true that many well-meaning family members have lost a loved one who when, posing on the rocks, back turned to the surf, has been caught by a big wave and washed off. The recent death of two lifesavers who perished while in the process of performing a rescue in big surf in a dangerous situation, should we hope, make people stop and think of what they are doing. Enjoy the scenic walks but keep it safe. During the season the Noosa club was lucky not to lose a patrol member when in performing a rescue he had to leave the safety of the IRB patrol boat and swim through big surf to rescue a man off the rocks in the unpatrolled National Park. The sudden arrival of the Jet Rescue Ski patrol to render support enabled the patrol man to perform his duty and save the life of both the patient and himself. The lesson for all to remember is that rocky outcrops and big surf are definitely
Look out for the Surf Awareness Team. a dangerous combination for photography and not worth the life of a friend: or even worst, the life of a lifesaver or lifeguard. On Sunday our beaches were privileged to have a visit from our newly formed Surf
Awareness Team. This team of two lifesavers Annie Luxford from Mooloolaba and Nick Hodgson from Kawana move around the beaches talking to people about safety and also hand out sunscreen and other goodies.

This on- going education is definitely a step in the right direction for with the massive increase in beach visitation our work to teach surf awareness must also be on the increase. Similar teams have been operating successfully on the Gold Coast. Travelling from beach to beach their Surf Awareness Vehicle is recognizable by the bright red and yellow colors of our beach patrols. Also it is fully equipped for a rescue procedure should an emergency occur during their travels. As stated this is a new concept and should be applauded. Last week members of the Noosa club gathered to bid a sad Farwell to Ian McDonald who passed away after a short illness. Affectional known as Macca he served for several years on the Surf Club Board of Directors and also as a patrolling radio operator. To his wife and family we convey our deepest sympathy and our support. Another who will be sadly missed not only the Noosa Old Boys but a large number of our local beach goers will be Betty Wallace. This remarkable much loved lady was known as the creator of the famous Bettys Burgers; made and served for years from a small shop at Noosa's Main Beach and sold for $1. She once told me while visiting with my family for our weekly session of Bettys Burgers on the beach, ''I just want to make a good burger that will not cost the kids an arm and a leg."Betty achieved both; now sadly missed she will never be forgotten. ●

CRACKING WEEK FOR SPANISH MACKEREL AT JEW SHOAL Well the good weather didn't last too long and the swell ramped up for the offshore anglers making bar crossing next to impossible for smaller boats. With only the charters headed out during the start of the week the bite was pretty quiet but the spring tides and gusting south east winds saw the fish on the chew but made for choppy conditions. Sunshine reef was the popular spot as it's close to home and some chunky coral trout were chewing on live baits and fresh slab baits fished hard on the bottom. For anglers using the paternoster style rigs then sweetlip, cod, venus tusk fish or tuskies and moses perch we also coming onboard. The one good thing about rain is that the sweetlip love a good flush of fresh. There were also a few larger sized snapper coming in too which are expected to only get bigger. Mid-week saw a brief window with some cracking Spanish mackerel around jew shoal and along the halls reef section headed north toward Double Island. These fish taking trolled hardbodies and gang hooked pilchard floaters for those drifting. Be sure to carry wire as you can go through a lot of gear in a short space of time if the bite is good. The longtail tuna and mac tuna have been prevalent all along the coast with many people reporting bust ups as far as the eye could see. Saturday saw a break in wind and although the rains came through the sea stayed calm. Bigger longtail tuna and mac tuna were getting caught in close and a few Spanish mackerel were also in the mix. sure to have a casting rod rigged with a slug as you never know when these speedsters will show up! The Noosa River has been a little slow due to the freshwater coming from the Noosa Everglades which is keeping things murky. As the water temperature cools from the rains you can expect to find some thumper flatties and bream in the lower reaches around the dog beach, river mouth and along Gympie Terrace. These fish love whole whitebait and hardy heads on light gang hooks. Cast these along the drop offs and let the current gently wash it along and wait for the bite. For lure anglers soft vibes and paddle tail plastics have to be the go, not forgetting to allow time for the lure to sit on the bottom. Dirty water allows you to use leaders up to 14lb which helps prevent bust offs that big flatties are known for. Trevally are still about and these love an early morning high tide so watch for surface action and cast directly at them with slugs or heavily weight plastics and crank them back at speed.
