MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk It's always rewarding to be able to report on good people in our local communities doing good things, like the Warwick Seventh-day Adventist Church and the 'Warwick Community Van', which features in our cover story this week (see pages 4&5). The van will be much more than your traditional 'soup kitchen', although with the cooler weather starting to creep in those without a fixed home in the local area will welcome a warming bowl of soup when the service commences in Leslie Park in the next month or so. The project is also a reminder that social isolation is a major but also a largely hidden issue in our society today, with a major national report on loneliness in Australia late last year revealing some quite startling statistics. There are people in our local communities who have a home but for a variety of complex reasons find it difficult or at times impossible to walk out their front door due to challenges with social interaction. The hope is that the 'Warwick Community Van' will add to the options those people have to connect with the services and help they require. In most cases that's more than just a plate of food, although a nutritious meal can be a great start. Jeremy Sollars

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Work is progressing on the controversial University of Queensland (UQ) solar farm at Sladevale north of Warwick after the official launch of construction in mid-April. Those driving past the 300-acre site off Freestone Road in recent weeks would have observed wire fencing being erected in preparation for the installation of 250,000 solar panels on prime farming land in the valley also known as Campbells Plains. The latest UQ update on the project says "site preparation works" have been completed and upcoming stages of work include the following · Site fencing about 50% completed - will be continuing over coming weeks · Vegetation planting well underway - will be continuing over coming weeks · Installation of piles that will support tracker structures has recently commenced and is now well underway will be continuing over coming weeks · Tracker structures delivered to site installation to commence within the next
A digital impression of the UQ solar farm at Sladevale just north of Warwick. month or so · Panels to begin being installed once installation of tracker structures is sufficiently progressed - expected around mid-year UQ has previously states the $125 million project will create more than 100 jobs during the construction phase, but local residents and farmers have said the site should have remained as prime agricultural land. Objections to the solar farm have also included the visual impact, particularly for
visitors to Warwick coming into town on the highway from Kelly's Hill. Lead project contractor Lendlease can be contacted directly regarding constructionrelated matters via the project hotline on 1800 717 383. ˝The other solar farm˝ Meanwhile the developer of a separate solar farm project in the vicinity of the UQ site says he is still seeking investors to financially back his project. Ahmed El Safty of Zero Energy Developments has approval from the Southern Downs Regional Council for a smaller solar farm on 80 acres of less valuable farming land bounded by the Cunningham Highway south of the Caltex Roadhouse and bounded by East Street and Ogilvie Road. Mr El Safty told the Free Times this week an initial round of overseas investors had pulled out of the project but that he remained confident new backers would be secured and that work on the site would commence "within the next three to four months". ●
MOST TOWNS FAILING TO HIT WATER TARGETS Residents are being called on by the Southern Downs Regional Council to be "vigilant and curb excessive water use with consumption well above the shared target despite extreme level water restrictions". A council statement released this week said data collected since the council introduced the restrictions suggests most communities across the region are exceeding the shared target of 120 litres per person per day. "Nearly all communities in the region exceeded water consumption targets with some using in excess of 250 litres per person per day," the statement said. "The Southern Downs moved to extreme level water restrictions in March in response to prolonged and severe drought conditions. "Extreme water restrictions play a vital role in sustaining and conserving the region's precious water supply as the drought continues and dam levels deplete. "Yangan was the only community in the Southern Downs to meet water consumption targets in March, with Allora and Wallangarra using water slightly above the target level." Councillor for Economic Development, Regional Promotion and Tourism Rod Kelly said Yangan was example of how a

Councillors at their April meeting last week voted in favour of allowing "existing raw water customers and existing standpipes to continue use, and reduce the amount of water that can be taken for any individual residential address within the Southern Downs region from standpipes to an overall weekly limit of 2000 litres". The resolution also said water "can be purchased at a single or multiple collection times, with access to occur on weekdays between 8.00am until 3.00pm effective from 1 May 2019". The vote came as part of a review of the council's 'Water Security Strategy' implemented in March which included the introduction of 'extreme' level restrictions. The strategy also included an investigation of existing council underground bore water supplies in urban areas and "verification" of current dam levels, with the possible use of contract divers. The Free Times last week asked the council for an update on those investigations and received the following response "SDRC continues to work with our consultants and the Queensland Government on emergency plans for securing water. "Council has received an initial report regarding options for water security, and Council is currently reviewing existing SDRC owned bores and exploring potential new bore sites. "Surveys to verify dam levels will be undertaken in late April and early May at Connolly, Leslie and Storm King Dams. "These surveys will allow Council to further refine the modelling of remaining water available for use across the region." ●

community can work together to save water. "I would like to acknowledge the work of Yangan residents and congratulate them on working to reduce their water use and meeting the target," Cr Kelly said. "Allora and Wallangarra also got close to meeting the target but we are still a long way from where we need to be as a region. "Our two major centres, Warwick and Stanthorpe, are both still using too much water. "We all play a part in managing our region's water resources and we need the community to help reduce water usage. "Our current water situation is serious and everyone needs to do their bit to make a difference." Councillor for Communities, Towns and Villages Sheryl Windle said residents and businesses "cannot get complacent with saving water in their homes and businesses". "It was great to see the region get some

rain recently and put some much needed water into our tanks and dams," Cr Windle said. "But with our lawns and gardens looking a bit greener, there may be a misconception that we are no longer in drought or that we have now received enough rain. "Everyone needs to remember that we are still in a very severe drought and our water supplies are very low. "Water is our most precious commodity and it is crucial that as a community we are reaching water consumption targets." The council says 'Extreme' level water restrictions will continue "for the foreseeable future" and that it will continue to monitor the region's water use and how it impacts water levels in the region's dams. "Water restrictions and any penalties for non-compliance are authorised under the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008," the council statement said. "Residents who see someone doing the wrong thing are encouraged to contact council. "To understand what extreme level water restrictions mean for you or your business visit Council's website or contact 1300 My SDRC (1300 697 372). ●

TIME TO REACH OUT BY JEREMY SOLLARS
A
t a time when loneliness and feelings of social isolation are being recognised as major social issues both nationally and globally, one local church is doing its own bit to help make new connections in the community. The Warwick Seventh-day Adventist Church has acquired a mobile meals unit dubbed 'The Warwick Community Van' - but the plan is for it to be much more than just a 'soup kitchen' on wheels for the homeless. The Free Times caught up with church
members this week to find out more about the project, with the van to be offering free meals - and more importantly the chance for social interaction - on Saturday evenings in Leslie Park in the next month or so. The caravan was found, after an extensive search, on the Gold Coast, where it had a previous life as a commercial food outlet at markets and other events and is fully fittedout kitchen-wise. The driving force behind 'The Warwick Community Van' is Catherine Cazaly, who said the van "just felt like home". "We'd been looking for quite some time online and found this one on Gumtree," Catherine explained.

"But you don't need to be homeless to access the service and the meals - we're reaching out to anyone in the area who may be experiencing isolation or even just families who are finding it hard to put food on the table. "We don't see it as the stereotypical 'soup kitchen' - we see it more as a 'community kitchen'. "Obviously there are lots of other churches and groups doing great work in the community, we just felt there was perhaps a need for a mobile kitchen and that Saturday evenings would be a good time, as a lot of those other services are only available through the week."

"Some of the others we looked at seemed a bit dodgy or a bit sterile, but this one just had a really nice, friendly feel to it. "We did a lot of fundraising including a giant garage sale in January, where we raised around $9500. "We also received a grant and a church member donated $5000, and the owner ended up dropping the price by $2500 so we purchased the van for $20,000. "I'd also like to acknowledge Zooma Signs, who have very kindly offered to do up new signage for the van for free. "Part of my motivation is that I have four kids and I wanted something for them to grow up with as a community service.

"Community services will often uncover issues such as abuse and drug use and we see 'The Warwick Community Van' as an opportunity and a meeting place for people who are in need of help to make the connections they need," Cathy said. Sharon Going pointed out that many in our midst are in fact the opposite of
homeless - rather they are "shut-ins", people who for whatever reason find social interaction challenging, sometimes due to underlying medical disorders, and won't go outside their home. "We do know of people in Warwick who are entitled to access the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) but for a variety of reasons they haven't been able to do so," she said.

According to the Australian Psychological Society - who released a major national report on loneliness in late 2018 -loneliness is a growing concern globally due to its reported impact on health and wellbeing. As part of Psychology Week 2018, the Australian Psychological Society addressed loneliness with a campaign to help people to connect and thrive. More information about the "Power of Human Connection" campaign is available at www.psychweek.org.au. As part of the campaign, the Society and Swinburne University produced the 'Australian Loneliness Report', based on a national survey of adults. The report examined the prevalence of loneliness and how it affects the physical and mental health of Australians. It is the most comprehensive study of loneliness completed in Australia and is the latest in a series of surveys conducted by the Australian Psychological Society to

WHAT IS LONELINESS? Loneliness is a feeling of distress people experience when their social relations are not the way they would like. It is a personal feeling of social isolation. It is different to feeling alone: we can be surrounded by others but still lonely, or we can be alone but not feel lonely. Loneliness may be a sign that a person's relationships are inadequate or don't meet their

As humans are essentially social animals, loneliness is thought to arise because the innate need to belong to a group is unmet. Loneliness signals a need to form a meaningful connection with others. Research has found that loneliness is related more to the quality than the quantity of relationships. A lonely person feels that their relationships are not meaningful and that he or she is not understood by others.
WHAT IS 'SOCIAL INTERACTION ANXIETY'? Social interaction anxiety is anxiety that arises from social interactions, in particular, a fear of being judged negatively by others or of feeling embarrassed. It can lead people to avoid a range of situations. In its extreme, where people experience high anxiety and are unable to operate in many typical situations, it may be classified as social anxiety disorder. ● •Source-'AustralianLoneliness Report',November2018

Over time 'The Warwick Community Van is expected to offer additional services including as a second-hand clothing source. Project members have already been reaching out to local primary producers stricken by the drought, holding two social events in March and April at the Wheatvale and Yangan State Schools, attended by more than 200 people. While Warwick's homeless population is perhaps less visible than those in the major cities it certainly exists, and outreach services like 'The Warwick Community Van' typically uncover a myriad of complex issues being faced by those without a fixed home. Church member Kacey Weier said homelessness included the growing trend of 'couch-surfing', where people drift between the homes of friends or acquaintances. "We know there are people who are sleeping in public toilets where they can lock the door for some safety," Kacey said. "But my husband and I had our own experience of someone doing it tough without somewhere to call home when a friend of his came here after a messy relationship break-up elsewhere. "He spent three months with us and eventually landed back on his feet, finding work and making plans to move on from here." Cathy Oehlmann said homelessness had a tremendous "stigma" attached to it and

"The extra treatment bays have really helped with the flow from our Emergency Department to the wards across the hospital, so we have been able to improve patient's transitions. "Triage and the reception are also now side-by-side which has helped improve processing, data collection and flow. "It has also improved access to our radiology services. "The upgrades to the ambulance ramp have also improved access to the Emergency Department and the Queensland Ambulance Service have said they are finding it easier to bring patients into the ED. "We have also had patients and their families comment on how much they appreciate the new increased privacy between treatment areas and how much easier it is to access the areas within the department. The Warwick Emergency Department saw 1795 people through its doors in March - up four per cent on the previous year. ●

Friday 3 May. The woman was flown to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital by RACQ LifeFlight in a critical condition with serious head, chest and internal injuries. She died in the hospital late on Friday night. Paramedics, including a critical care unit, were called the scene of a crash on the Boonah-Beaudesert Road, Wyaralong at about 11am last Friday. Initial police investigations suggested the Stanthorpe woman was heading west in a Holden Barina when it hit a guard rail before colliding with a four wheel drive travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of the four wheel drive, a woman in her 50s, was transported by road to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with a minor neck injury. Queensland Police are investigating the cause of the crash. The name of the deceased woman from Stanthorpe had not been released by time of printing of the Free Times this week. ●

NOTICE OF ROADWORKS JUNABEE, RANGER & OXENHAM STREET INTERSECTION, WARWICK Southern Downs Regional Council would like to advise that road works for the realignment of Oxenham Street onto Rangers Road will be commencing at this intersection from Tuesday 7th May. The work will include drainage infrastructure and street-light installation and is expected to continue until the end of June 2019, subject to weather conditions. To assist progress with this work, Council proposes to temporarily close Oxenham Street to through traffic between the Rangers & Ruston Streets junctions for most of the job duration. Access to local properties in Oxenham Street will be permitted past the signs at the Ruston Street intersection but no traffic will be permitted to enter or leave Oxenham Street at the Ranger Road intersection. The intersection of Junabee & Ranger Roads will remain open and road users may experience short delays when this intersection is placed under traffic control at various times during the project.

of Facebook and to Tom's family. With this also came many more offers of monetary donations to replace Tom's bike along with several offers to purchase a brand new replacement bike of Tom's choice. The overwhelming support for Tom was amazing and he and his family have been eternally grateful. But Tom had saved very hard for a specific bike to carry the load of his 'red trolley' and when Tom was approached by
local couple, Andrew and Rachel Williams, who knew Tom very well and with whom Tom had worked alongside offered to order the exact same brand and make if mountain bike that Tom had previously. Tom very graciously accepted this kind gesture. With Tom's new bike in hand Big W donated a new helmet and water bottle and of course the most important thing - a lockable tie for Tom's bike. Tom at this point suggested that the Medical Centre Facilities Carpark should install a bike rack so that he and other patients could stand and safely lock their bikes during visits to the FSD Health Centre. In the meantime Tom would lock his bike on the child's playground fence where it remained safe. Through once again a generous donation of a used bike from a local source and the kind gesture of a local man offering to give the bike rack a new lease of life with a new paint job, the bike rack Tom had been hoping for 12 months came to be. On Tuesday 23 April, almost the anniversary of Tom's bike being taken, a bike rack was installed and Tom had the pleasure of cutting the ribbon and officially opening the Tom Potts Bike Rack. Tom made a speech during the opening thanking the Condamine Medical Centre and FSD Health Centre doctors and staff for installing the bike rack and to kind donation of the local people who prepared and installed it. ●

On the eve of Anzac Day 2018 Tom Potts rode his much-loved mountain bike to the Condamine Medical Centre for a routine appointment. Tom had ridden his bike to many appointments over the years and always parked it in the same place at the front of the Medical Centre. After his appointment Tom went to retrieve his bike and found it had been taken from where he had parked it. Tom is no stranger to Warwick locals and was often seen riding his bike that was specially modified to tow a custom-made red cart painted white with the words 'Potts Heavy Haulage'. Fortunately on the day the bike was taken the red cart was not attached. As Tom does not hold a driver's licence his bike and cart are his usual means of daily transportation to and from his workplace at the Warwick Endeavour Foundation. Obviously Tom was upset and after a search around the premises with several staff members it appeared that sadly Tom's bike had in fact been stolen. Police were called and a Facebook page was set up to make people aware and help find Tom's missing bike. By Anzac Day hundreds of comments of support flowed through Facebook for Tom and more importantly a huge influx of people from local to interstate offered to contribute funds towards replacing Tom's bike to the exact make and model. These offers came from offering individual amounts to the full amount just to see Tom be reunited with a replacement bike.

JOCKEY TAKES A SURPRISE BREAK

Cowboys player Ben Sullivan was named Player of the Final. He is pictured receiving his trophy from SCGRL.
Fans, players and coaches will be looking for their own bit of magic considering the form of some of the more fancied teams this season. None more so than the Brisbane Broncos who need to pull more than a rabbit out of the hat after their performance against the Rabbitohs last week. Storm players have been put on notice that their performances have not been acceptable by Coach Craig Bellamy who apparently has the selection axe in hand. The feast of footy gets under way on Thursday night and wraps up with a Mother's Day treat for all the footy loving Mums with a couple of head line games. The Roosters and Raiders play the early game and a weekend of magic or mayhem wraps up with the Bunnies and Cowboys going head to head. There are still tickets available for the feast of footy ranging from Thursday night tickets $10; individual day tickets $35 and three day passes $89. It will be a truly "Magic" weekend if tipsters can find some winners.

BACK FOR MAY VISIT A contingent of golfers from Kilcoy joined members of the Stanthorpe Golf Club for Saturday's 4BBB Stableford sponsored by Jeff Ihle and Biz Ihle, of Kilcoy and was the start of a busy weekend on the Stanthorpe Golf course.
For the Kilcoy golfers the May long weekend marks a much-anticipated annual trip to the Granite Belt that has been on their agenda for many years. The Stanthorpe community was delighted to wake to overcast skies and the sound of rain on the roof on Saturday perhaps not so much the golfers. The drizzle cleared shortly after play commenced and the big group enjoyed good conditions for the round. The visiting team of J. Poulton and J. Runge and the local pairing of Kay Webb and Max Hunter were forced into a count back when they both returned what would normally be a winning score of 50 for the round. After the count back it was the visitors who got the nod. The local duo forced to settle for the runner's up spot after some excellent play. Jeff and Biz Ihle have sponsored the Saturday round on the May long weekend for many years and the club appreciates their ongoing support and the support of the visiting Kilcoy players. The Stanthorpe Golf Club welcomed new a sponsor Black Toyota, Warwick and their representative Rob Reeves for Sunday's programme. A maximum field had those in the starter's box on their toes as they efficiently despatched teams to their allocated teeing points to commence the three ball Ambrose event. Winners, by the narrowest of margins were the local team of Wes Smith, Hayden Smith and Michael Pearson (Bugsy). Just one-sixth of a stroke separated them from runners up, Guy, Bryce and Jack from Kilcoy. Second runners up were another group of Kilcoy visitor, JR, Dunga and Jack. Flying the flag for the locals in the Ladies Only event was Neta Thouard, Lorraine
Gurnett and Lorraine Evans who returned a winning score of nett 70. The successful trio finished three shots clear of their nearest rivals (another local group) Helen Jones, Kay Webb and Annelle Batterham. It wrapped up another great May long weekend of golf in Stanthorpe. It is a weekend of competition that members and visitors look forward to each year. The organisers extend their thanks to the sponsors and those members who gave up their time to help, both inside and outside the clubhouse during the busy two days. This weekend play reverts to normal Saturday competition. The May monthly medal and putting competition is scheduled and will be sponsored by Mark and Racheal Hendry. There is a time sheet on the board at the clubhouse for this event. Saturday will also be the first round of both the men's and ladies' championships. Members are reminded that the winter tee off time of 11.00am is now in play. LAST HURRAH The last hurrah of the cricket season, the Falconer Shield final was played out at Slade Park on Sunday between Warwick and South Burnett. Warwick set the visitors a big run chase after posting 322 runs for the loss of only six wickets in a dominant batting display. The opening duo of Mitch Bourke and Mitch McLennan set the stage for a good score with a first wicket stand of 68 before McLennan (19) was dismissed. Bourke was dismissed for 79, his runs coming off just 67 balls. There were some good performances with the bat and some solid partnerships set up the big score. Jacob Gross (40); Joe Morris (44); Sean Bryson (22) all batted well. Ben Heppell (76) hit his highest score in representative cricket bettering his previous score of 42. Nick Morris (9) and Captain Dave Walker (19) remained not out. The South Burnett innings began positively with their openers striking the ball well in the first over. However, the joy was short-lived as James Fern took wickets with consecutive balls in the next over, narrowly missing out on a hat trick. Caleb King finished with the best bowling figures of the day taking three wickets for eight runs from just five overs. South Burnett batsmen Ryan Kelly (48) and Tyler Heness (21) did their best to push the total along but the Warwick bowlers had the upper hand. The visitors were bundled out in the 34th over 198 runs short of the required total. The win wrapped up a successful Representative season for the Warwick Bulls. ●
GIBSON’S WINDOW TINTING 12410761-RC08-19
Jockey Hugh Bowman surprised many when he stood himself down from rides last Saturday at the Gold Coast. The champion jockey announced he was mentally exhausted and would be taking an indefinite and extended break from racing. The announcement caught many by surprise but in reality, it should not have been a shock when you consider the enormous pressure Bowman must have been under in his final rides on the mighty Winx. While Bowman stepped down from his riding commitments, he did not shirk a commitment to friends at Julia Creek who suffered during the recent flood disaster. Bowman along with radio personality Alan Jones and "Queenslander" Billy Moore were the special guests at a Charity Flood Relief luncheon at Julia Creek on Sunday along with 240 farmers and their families who have been to hell and back. Bowman who hails from Dunnedo in central western NSW is no stranger to the trials of life on the land. Neither is he a stranger to Julia Creek having spent time working on a property in the district some years ago. A far cry from Flemington, Randwick and the Gold Coast and I doubt there was a Winx among the stock horses. That he honoured his commitment to the folks at Julia Creek is just another example of what a good bloke he is. Enjoy your holiday Hughie. Casey THE SHOWMAN AND THE GREMLIN A wonderful long weekend on the Granite Belt was marred by news of the passing of two of the Granite Belt's very familiar faces. Family and friends are mourning the loss of Michael Boucher and Peter Shatte. Both men lost their individual battle with cancer on the weekend but both leave an indelible mark on their community. Michael Boucher will be remembered for many things. His untiring work with the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society which earned him life membership earlier this year; his work ethic and bush skills; his straight shooting and of course that indomitable twinkle of mischief in his blue eyes. The death of Peter Shatte came as a shock to many in the community and none more so than players past and present, officials and supporters of the Stanthorpe Gremlins. Family and football were what Peter Shatte lived for. Peter embodied the Gremlins spirit and was a past player, coach and President of the club. He worked tirelessly to ensure the survival of the Gremlins. Perditta and I extend our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Michael's partner Claudia and his family and to Kerry, Nathan, Sarah, their families and the extended Shatte family. Michael and Peter, two good blokes gone far too soon who will be greatly missed. MAKING MAGIC Round Nine of the NRL is the weekend for supporters to believe in magic. In a first for Rugby League the full round of competition will be played at Suncorp. The NRL boffins have borrowed the concept from the English Super League where it has been a great success since its inception in 2007. Since then Magic weekend has been played at Cardiff 's Millennium stadium, Murrayfield in Edinburgh, Manchester's Etihad Stadium and Newcastle's St James Park. The NRL is contracted to hold the Magic Round at Suncorp for three years and will be hoping it is as successful as its English counterpart.
