Former Knox Basketball chief Stephen Walter has been appointed as Mr Allen's replacement.

In September, the DBA sold its house for import players in Simpson Drive, Dandenong North, settling a bank loan against the property. Mr Wood said the house was an ageing property that had become costly to maintain. "We're not in the business of property, we're in the business of basketball. "We decided we could house players more economically by leasing a property for the periods needed."

Much of the "unexpected" legal fees stemmed from an ugly, protracted and unsuccessful legal battle against junior coach Josh Henshaw in 2018. The DBA had unsuccessfully tried to ban Mr Henshaw from the stadium, despite the coach winning an injunction that temporarily lifted his Basketball Victoria suspension. state, a member said. According to its 2017-18 annual report, the DBA recorded a $158,000 loss while selling off its house for import players. It was hit by "several unforeseen one-off expense items" totalling $175,000, it reported. They included unexpected legal fees, backpay for unpaid staff penalty rates, extra maintenance for its player house, and a stadium rental hike.

The region's iconic and financially-pressured Dandenong Basketball Association has replaced chief executive Graeme Allen. Mr Allen was said to have formally departed the DBA in April but had been absent on "sick leave" for the past two months. He has served as DBA's chief twice, in 200812 and 2015-19 It marks some upheaval at the top of the giant sporting organisation, which hosts three national-league teams, 42 state-league teams and 800 domestic sides a week. Since June, four of its seven board members have resigned. The new chief executive Stephen Walter, who started on 6 May, is well-known for leading Knox Basketball from near-receivership to profits. With Mr Walter's appointment, it's expected that the future of the DBA's jewel-in-the-crown Dandenong Rangers will be clarified soon. The team is currently without a coach, and the retention of its WNBL licence has also been subject to speculation. DBA vice president Dale Wood was tightlipped on why Mr Allen had departed. Mr Walter's financial performance was one of "many reasons" for him being a "good fit going forward," Mr Wood said. "Stephen Walter has been through similar sorts of things getting (Knox) back on track, though it is a different set of circumstances. "There's a positive outlook. It's stable. We're heading in the right direction." According to a DBA statement, Mr Walter led Knox through a "most difficult period" and "helped establish Knox's status as a strong, financially stable organisation". "With Knox now thriving at an elite, representative and domestic competition level, (Mr Walter) will no doubt look to do the same at Dandenong." At an open meeting two months ago, DBA revealed its financial woes to members. At that stage, Mr Allen had just gone on leave. Members were told action needed to be taken for the DBA to recover from a "perilous"

IN BRIEF $3.2m for rough sleepers
Tyre-shop burglars leave a black mark
A $3.2 million State funding package has been unveiled to assist people sleeping rough in Greater Dandenong. Under the program, outreach workers will connect rough sleepers to supportive housing teams. They will be housed in seven new modular homes and helped in maintaining a home and re-establishing ties with the community. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said no one would choose to be homeless if there were better options. "We're helping the members of our community who are sleeping rough to find a pathway off the streets and into housing." Housing Minister Richard Wynne said the program was designed to break the cycle of homelessness. "Homelessness can be the result of a number of complex issues. These support workers will help rough sleepers get emergency accommodation and ongoing help." The program partners are the State Government, City of Greater Dandenong and service providers Launch Housing and NEAMI National. It is part of a $17 million rough sleepers' package by the State Government.

Facebook victim robbed
Caught in arrest drama on main street By Cam Lucadou-Wells A street-stopping arrest in central Dandenong had unforeseen consequences for a Star Journal photographer. He was one of a crowd of onlookers witnessing teams of police arrest of a male and female from a sedan stopped on the median strip in Lonsdale Street about 2pm on 9 May. Police allege the vehicle displayed stolen number plates, with the arrested male taken to hospital due to being apparently "substance affected". The pair were arrested without issue, police say. That unfortunately wasn't the case for our photographer. As he captured the drama unfolding outside Drum Theatre, a woman alleging to be the male's sister confronted him. She pushed him to the chest and threatened to stab him. She also snatched away his phone and flung it to ground.

However, he did take on some photographs earlier on his 'old school' regular camera, as shown here.

An i-Pad seller on Facebook Marketplace has been robbed by 'buyers' at his Springvale home. After making arrangements for a hand-over, the vendor was met at his Heatherton Road home by two male visitors about 8.30pm on Monday 6 May. The robbers inspected the item, and tried unsuccessfully to take it without paying. During their escape, one of the males was briefly entrapped after the victim shut a backyard gate in his path. He bit the victim's arm during a confrontation and fled. The victim chased the other male down Guildford Avenue, while phoning police for assistance. A group of offenders got out of a small hatch-back vehicle parked in the avenue. They snatched the phone from his hand, and kicked and punched him to ground. The robbers were described as young and African appearance. One was tall, and the other was short, the victim told police. The victim suffered minor injuries. All for the sake of $300 - two burglars bludgeoned their way into a tyre shop in Lonsdale Street Dandenong, and then towed out a 100-kilogram safe of cash. The damage bill totals about $10,000 for the Bob Jane T-Marts business, says its owner Neil Finlayson. Not to mention the inconvenience of organising insurance and tradespeople to repair internal and external doors, walls, glass panes, security shutters and a replacement safe. All prior to flying out to Adelaide for his aunt's funeral that day. "As my wife said, we work hard for our money," Mr Finlayson said. "(The burglars) need to earn their own. "I've got a wife and three kids to feed, seven staff members to support. And this just eats into it." It was the fifth break-in in seven years, but the latest was the most violent, Mr Finlayson said. Arriving in a silver VZ Commodore, the thieves were initially unable to force open the front doors about 3am on Monday 6 May. They tried attaching cables from the car to the store's doors and towing them ajar - but with little success. Twenty minutes later, they returned with sledgehammers and hammers to "well and truly demolish" the glass doors.. The burglars attached the cables to the safe and tried to tow it out of a backroom.

Feasts are fit for a king By Cam Lucadou-Wells This week's column was supposedly all about tasting some fine, creamy hummus on the eve of International Hummus Day. But what King of Falafel stallholders Sam and Elham Jurdi provided was hummus and a rich feast for Dine Local as well as a cavalcade of regular customers. Spread over a table in the Dandenong Market food court were large plates of fresh and hand-made falafel, tabouli, sambousek pastries, lamb kibbi and vegetarian kibbi - and a square metre of hummus. We ate like kings. Steeped in a daily routine of mass Lebanese cooking, husband and wife Sam and Elham are hands-on experts. What they serve at the market, they also cook banquets of up to 20 family and friends at home. Each of the falafels are prepared by Sam each day, the pastries, salads, kibbis and dips by Elham. The falafel is a simple gluten-free mix of crushed broad beans, chick peas and spices. It's lightly fried to create a combination of soft interior and a crunchy crust. Elham prepares up to 20 batches of tabouli on market day. It's a staple side-dish for every offering. The secret to her refreshing, popular salad is heaping on the flat-leaf parsley greens but going light on the bulgar wheat. The sambouseks with hand-made pastries range from lamb, vegetarian and all-cheese varieties. The two-cheese filling is a highlight - a creamy mix of ricotta and Bulgarian sheep fetta. The couple are testament that you can't get sick of good food. Both devour a hearty falafel wrap every lunchtime. The couple were born in Lebanon. They say
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL they met while Sam holidayed at his brother's house in Lebanon, and married in Australia. Family figures highly for them. Sam had run a men's clothing shop in Venezuela, South America until the country was beset by civil war. In the late 1970s, he moved to Australia to support his bereaved sister, whose husband had passed away. Fifteen years ago, Elham and Sam moved to Melbourne, so one of their children could study a forensics-law double-degree. As the feast gets greedily devoured, Sam, 72, tells Dine Local that he loves to cook and work - he's done so since he was 14. He'd briefly retired after four decades as a chef in Adelaide and St Kilda. But boredom stirred the couple back into business, setting up the King of Falafel stall four years ago. Retirement is not in his thoughts, he says.

‘Powerful’ start to probe By Cam Lucadou-Wells More than 170 people registered for a consultation in Dandenong as part the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System. The consultation was broken up into eight round-table discussions with a Commissioner and consumers, carers, workers and others involved in mental health. Royal Commission chairperson Penny Armytage said several themes emerged in the "powerful" sessions.
She described them as a "preliminary stage" where issues emerge for later investigation. "From the Commission's point of view this is our listening and reflecting phase." There were positive stories. Such as growing awareness about mental health issues, the capable workers in the sector, and some good outcomes in early intervention and support services. On the other hand, families told of how difficult it was to access support for adolescents, the lack of in-patient beds and the abbreviated
period of in-patient care. Some had talked about police officers being their first point of contact rather than CAT team specialists who could deliver a "comprehensive mental health response". Others expressed a need for more peersupport workers who had "lived experience" to help patients and consumers. "The complexity of the system is clearly coming through as difficult for participants even for those with good health literacy and who work in it."
Through the sessions, there was an "enormous sense of humanity and good-will" and a willingness to share stories, Ms Armytage said. Participants had thought deeply on how to make the service better, she said. Star Journal has recently reported on a frustrated single father unable to access critical care for his teenage son, as well as a Casey Hospital patient who revealed a harrowing experience as an in-patient. Consultations continue across the state until 22 May.
Curiosity clasped the cat - just eight lives left now By Cam Lucadou-Wells A stray kitten has been dubbed 'Piper' after being rescued from an outlet pipe in an industrial bin in Dandenong South. On Friday afternoon 26 April, a factory worker found Piper with her head improbably wedged outside the bin and her body inside. RSPCA inspector Maree however said it was a fairly "typical" occurrence. Stray cats often rummaging in rubbish bins for food will get spooked or head for light and get stuck in the drainage hole. "She is a very lucky cat to have someone that had sighted her stuck in the bin and reported it, otherwise it may not have been a positive outcome." Maree initially tried to free the "quite relaxed, most likely exhausted" feline by greasing her with Vaseline and manoeuvring her head. CFA officers were then called. During a delicate hour-long operation, a small angle grinder was used to cut away sections of the outlet encasing Piper's neck. At the time, Piper's body condition was light. Maree suspects she could have been
stuck over the preceding Easter break. "She was accepting of being handled, but this could have been put down to the exhaustion as stray cats normally do not act this way. 'Afterwards, she couldn't get enough attention; she was purring and was well behaved for her vet exam. She is constantly seeking attention now." Piper was treated at an RSPCA clinic and taken to a foster home to gain weight. She will then be available for adoption. "She would suit a home that can provide a lot of attention and affection towards her, so perhaps a family environment would suit her," Maree said. "She seems to be a pretty sweet cat." An RSPCA spokesperson said several requests had been made to adopt Piper since the story was posted on the association's Facebook page. "While she will need to be in foster care until she is ready for adoption, we do have many other kittens who desperately need homes." RSPCA Victoria is extending its 'no fees for felines' campaign to urgently help re-home more than 1500 cats in its care.
More than 770 of them were lodged at their Burwood and Pearcedale sites. Greater Dandenong Council has recently put a stay on trapping stray and feral cats due to its contracted pound being filled. The strain on cat shelters remains despite the RSPCA rehoming more than 900 cats last month. RSPCA state operations head Tegan McPherson said a long, dry summer had extended the traditional cat-breeding season and created a "cat problem". "Historically these types of campaigns help us rehome the 10,000 cats we receive annually," said RSPCA state operations head Tegan McPherson. "But this year we're being inundated and just can't keep up with the demand." As part of the RSPCA campaign, adoption fees will be waived for all cats, with reduced fees for desexing, microchipping and vaccinating the adoptees. Kittens under five months can be adopted for a discounted price of $50. The campaign runs until 31 May.
Piper caught in a tight spot in a Dandenong South factory.
Piper scrubbed up well after her ordeal.

How would you increase the supply of affordable housing/rentals in Bruce? Home ownership shouldn’t be pushed out of reach due to the increases in the cost of owning a home. We will do this by ensuring the purchase of land is reserved to citizens. Much like legislation just passed in New Zealand. What other means can you address cost-ofliving pressures? We will do away with nonsense policies like renewable energy mandates which in conjunction with the closure of coal fired power has driven up the cost of electricity. We support the dismantling of the rigged system that privileges investors and landlords over the rest of us. What would you do to fix transport congestion in the electorate? We want to work with businesses to see growth in the creation of local jobs that limit the need for the daily commute. We also want greater investment in the fast bus network and to extend the rail network to the new growth areas. We have seen great investment in the expansion of roads which has not delivered the results promised. Identify your three top concerns on behalf of Bruce constituents. Cost of living. A liveable climate. Population growth. Mubahil Ahmed (United Australia) and John MacIsaac (Liberals) did not respond

Voters are set to have their say on the federal election on Saturday 18 May. To help your decision, Star Journal sent surveys to the five candidates in Bruce, which covers much of Dandenong, Noble Park, Doveton, Endeavour Hills and Hallam. Three candidates responded. Julian Hill (Labor Party) Age 45 Suburb Dandenong Profession(s) Community advocate, Federal Member for Bruce What’s your electorate’s best asset? Without doubt, our human and cultural diversity. Bruce today is Australia tomorrow with people from all over the world making their home here. In the coming decades this diversity will allow us to understand, connect and trade with the world around us. How would you increase the supply of affordable housing/rentals in Bruce? A Federal Labor Government will build 250,000 new affordable rental homes over the next decade in partnership with the community housing sector for Australians on low and moderate incomes. 1 in 10 employees engaged in building new housing stock will be apprentices. You can find more detail about Labor’s affordable housing policies at: https://www. alp.org.au/policies/labors-comprehensiveplan-for-housing-affordability/ What other means can you address cost-ofliving pressures? Cost of living policies include: expanding Medicare to provide free dental care for pensioners, and blood tests and scans for cancer; massive reductions in childcare fees for families earning under $174,000 a year; tax cuts for everyday workers not the top end of town; and cleaner, cheaper power by investing in renewable energy. What would you do to fix transport congestion in the electorate? (Feel free to identify hot-spots and provide costings, if possible.) Labor will ensure Victoria gets a better deal and a fairer share of Commonwealth transport funding. Major rail upgrades like the Suburban Rail Loop and Melbourne Metro will create more capacity on the trains and ease congestion on local roads. Labor has also committed to an $850 million road and rail package for South-East Melbourne, including an extra lane in each direction on Hallam North Road in Endeavour Hills, Victoria, Australia, between Heatherton Road and James Cook Drive. Identify your three top concerns on behalf of Bruce constituents. 1. Liberal cuts to vital public services, including local hospitals, schools and TAFEs. 2. Growing delays at Centrelink, the National Disability Insurance Scheme and Home Affairs, due to Liberal budget cuts and government chaos. 3. Youth unemployment and job creation.

Chambers scheme is backed
8 May 1919 Dandenong Soldiers
There has been overwhelming support of the plan by the Dandenong Chamber of Commerce to rejuvenate the heart of the city's shopping area. Almost all the traders and business people interviewed by The Journal yesterday said the scheme to virtually close off Lonsdale St was an excellent idea. The plan includes the provision of a further 700 parking spaces in the heart of the city, while still allowing for through traffic at greatly reduced speed. Spokesmen for Walton's, Gippsland Hardware, Coles, McEwan's, Lawfords, Maples, Guest's Bash's and Murdoch Electrical were among those who said they "wholeheartedly" supported the project

action has intensified this week, with nurses at Dandenong Hospital closing one in five beds. The action has also spread to other hospitals across the state including Monash Medical Centre's service at Clayton, Hampton Rehabilitation Hospital and Sandringham Hospital. ANF Victorian branch senior industrial office Mr Robert Burrows said hospital beds would continue to close until an agreement was reach with the Department of Human Services. "The despite is in relation to our organizational change agreement which includes our redeployment and training and redundancies", Mr Burrows said. "We just want reconfirmation of a standard agreement but at the eleventh hour the Government has refused to sign the deal. We reached an agreement with the Southern Health Care Network (SHCN) last week. All we want is a fair go and it's an unfortunate fact that public health services will suffer until we get it."

Lyndhurst MP Martin Pakula said "not a single cent, let alone a dollar" had been allocated to schools in the electorate in the 2014-15 State Budget. "The community has been deceived" Chandler Park Primary principal Peter Paul said last week. The Keysborough School has been waiting for funding to complete a merger with Maralinga Primary started five years ago. "We cannot simply continue the way we are" he said. "We're running across both campuses. It's a situation that beggars belief." Mr Paul said the school needed $5.7 million to add more classrooms and art room, library and administration facilities

When medicine’s misused With signs of a looming opioid crisis, a public information event on prescription medicine misuse is being staged in Dandenong. Not-for-profit group ScriptWise is staging a short documentary One Too Many as well as hosting experts on the SafeScript real-time prescription monitoring system on Tuesday 14 May. In Greater Dandenong, prescription meds were involved in about three-quarters of overdose deaths between 2009-15. ScriptWise spokesperson Megan Newcomb said the event was an important opportunity for people to learn more about the best treatments for managing ongoing pain, anxiety and sleep issues. “We’ve seen that over the past ten years,
A still from a SafeScript campaign ad warning on the dangers of prescription medication misuse. people in Dandenong are being more and more affected by the use of medications which can be addictive such as opioids and sleeping tablets,” said Ms Newcomb.
“Someone may start taking these medications to manage a severe injury or to get rest during a stressful time, but don’t realise if they continue using them, they are more likely to
experience unwanted side-effects. “We hear a lot about the opioid epidemic in the US, but this is an something that is happening here in our communities too but we do have the tools to start addressing it.” The SafeScript system is a prevention measure that gives health professionals access to their patient’s prescription history of high-risk medications such as opioids and sedatives. In a six-month trial in western Victoria, it helped identify 4500 at-risk patients who were prescription shopping at multiple clinics and pharmacies. The ScriptWise event is at Harmony Square, Dandenong on Tuesday 14 May from 11.30am. For help, phone SafeScript Pharmaceutical Helpline on 1800 737 233.

His life for others By Casey Neill
Lee Tarlamis.
Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate. His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June. The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said. “I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement. “It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people. “It’s a view that I formed very early on.” Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17. “The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was
throughout those two years,” he said. “It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me. “That’s why I got involved in the local community.” Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre. “The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.” There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer. “That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said. “That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.” He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014. “That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said. Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.
He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings. The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up. The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old. He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands. Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business. “I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said. “I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that. “I really enjoyed the community stuff. “Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Persistence wins at life By Cam Lucadou-Wells Man Wang was chatting with a fellow worker at a fast-food packaging factory when the penny dropped. His colleague had worked the same monotonous job for 35 years, he was just hanging on to see retirement. Mr Wang determinedly decided to take a different path. A recent Chinese immigrant with little English, Mr Wang’s path to running his own security gate manufacturing firm in Dandenong wasn’t easy. But a decade later, the firm Boswen had won a tender for the Caulfield-Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project. At an awards event on 7 May, Boswen was one of three Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce 2019 award nominees. Other finalists were Thrifty Car and Truck Rental Dandenong and Soccer 5s Dandenong. Soccer 5s centre manager Jack Gillibrand told the Chamber of Commerce event at Hotel Artura that the centre’s world-class synthetic pitches were filled with 250 teams a week. Such centres are common in the UK, but none of its type existed in Melbourne. Its owner had identified the soccer-rich Dandenong area as the right fit. Soccer 5s opens its pitches to the Doveton Special Soccer School for weekly training, a Dandenong High School girls side and its own junior pathway programs and teams. Thrifty’s Dandenong franchise started as a used car yard hit hard by the 1990 recession. Rick and Rhonda Lawrence put up their last five cars for hire, and their thriving franchise with a $30 million turnover followed. In the past five years, its fleet has grown from 500 to 2200 vehicles, with a staff of 135. They own 15 other Thrifty franchises in Victoria. Disability Certificate IV student Zoe Atter-

At 22, she made a career U-turn from event management to disability support. With a need for 25,000 further disability support workers in Victoria, she had an urge to help people, she said. While studying the intricacy of NDIS, she works for employment firm Hire Up and takes groups on outings to the cinema and markets as a disability support worker. “I couldn’t imagine working in another field,” she said. Boswen co-director Stella Ta - the wife of Man Wang - elaborated on the business’s obstacles.
Where two speeds collide Confusion reigned in Dandenong’s main thoroughfare due to a glitch with electronic speed signs. Resident Dallas Goldburg noticed two variable speed signs in Lonsdale Street read 60 about 9.30am on Tuesday 30 April. This contradicted the prevailing 40 km/h time period. The errant signs facing citybound traffic were near the Foster Street and Walker Street intersections. The variable sign at Scott Street correctly displayed 40. On 3 May, VicRoads stated it switched off the signs and rectified the fault. A spokesperson said that fixed static signs on Lonsdale Street still showed the correct speed zones for the different times of day. “These variable signs are used in addition to static signs to notify drivers of the limit in locations where the speed varies at different times of the day, such as at shopping strips and -

They had ploughed their $20,000 savings into the new enterprise, while Ms Ta was pregnant with their first child. Mr Wang had hoped to continue to sell Chinese-made security gates like he had previously in China and Vietnam. But the extremely wide doors he had sold could not find a market in Australia. “When you have no option, you just keep going,” Ms Ta said. They reinvented themselves as manufacturers and installers of automatic gates and security fences. The firm has grown 100 per cent a year to a $12 million turnover, 4000-client business.

Orthopaedic care has expanded in Berwick with St John of God Berwick Hospital opening a brand new surgical unit specialising in treating injuries and diseases of the body's musculoskeletal system, including the spine. The hospital has undertaken orthopaedic and spinal surgery for several years, however significant growth in this specialty has required the establishment of a dedicated unit. The new orthopaedic unit opened on Monday 4 February 2019. The fourth floor unit has been left empty since the opening of the new hospital in January 2018 to accommodate future growth. It was not anticipated to be needed for the first few years of operation. However, local demand has seen it necessary to offer further orthopaedic services to the residents of Melbourne’s South East. The unit has the capacity for 32 beds, primarily focussing on orthopaedic and neurosurgical patients. The new unit sees the beginning of an emphasis on orthopaedic services. The hospital’s MAKO robot, currently used for partial knee replacements, is now also utilised for full knee replacements. A hospital spokesperson said it was reassuring for "local patients to know that they have access to this very targeted nursing care and technology so close to home, allowing patients to have surgery and rehabilitation under one roof to ensure they recover and resume normal daily activities".

New doctor at Doveton
Care and compassion The doctors and staff at Langton Medical Centre have been caring for the locals of Dandenong since the 1950s. And while they may have seen many changes since then, some things, like the personal approach to family healthcare, never change. It’s no secret that the experienced doctors and dedicated staff pride themselves on offering excellent service and high standards to their patients. Recently, the centre’s many longstanding doctors have been joined by additional experienced GPs. This is in an effort to ensure patients can see a doctor on the day they call and urgent medical problems can be seen sooner. There are now nine doctors available for bookings. Patients can also have their blood tests done within the medical centre and pick up any prescriptions at the pharmacy which is located right next to the centre’s waiting room. And if patients need any extra medical tests, such as x-rays and ultrasounds, or possibly appointments to see physios, specialists and many more, they are all nearby. Langton has also worked closely with Dandenong Hospital and many other hospitals in the area.
Langton Medical Centre offers a wide range of services to patients, covering all aspects of general practice and family medicine. Patients can book appointments for many things such as women’s health, maternity care, minor surgery, work medicals, kid’s immunisations and of course general medical concerns. The doctors are supported by a dedicated team of nurses and support staff, and translation services can be organised for appointments if needed. The flu vaccination is now in stock and available for Langton Medical Centre patients. Many people are able to get the vaccination for free under the government flu vaccination program, so the centre always recommends that patients check with them when visiting. Langton Medical Centre is conveniently located in Langhorne Street, right in the centre of Dandenong. The practice is easily accessible and there is plenty of parking right outside the door. Opening hours are from 8am Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings from 9am. For more information, phone 9791 8888 or make an appointment online at www.langtonmc.com.

Dad in gift of life By Garry Howe Denis Green and his two sons have moved beyond exchanging birthday presents these days. But this year will be an exception. Denis has just gone through a battle with prostate cancer and, as a gift for his 70th birthday, he has asked the two boys to provide copies of their PSA tests. They, like many middle aged men, have been reluctant to be tested for the disease, which strikes 18,000 men in Australia each year and kills 3500 of them. Denis, convenor of the Dandenong-based South Eastern Prostate Cancer Support Group, was diagnosed at 68 and his younger brother received the same bad news when only 56. It should not have come as a great surprise, given their father had prostate cancer and their mother breast cancer. “Family history is very important when it comes to prostate cancer,” Denis explained. “The experts say that you should be checked from 50, or from 40 if you have a family history of the disease.” Hence the birthday request from his sons. “There’s still a reluctance in men to address and talk about their health,” Denis said. “There’s a tendency to put it off, like my boys have, and dismiss it as an older man’s disease.” Denis joined a prostate cancer support group around Ringwood when he was disagnosed and attended the local chapter when moving to Narre Warren last year. He now heads it up as convenor and wants to get the word out to prostate cancer sufferers, their loved ones and anyone who may have a question or two about the disease that help is at hand. The City of Greater Dandenong is proposing to make changes to the residential planning rules to finalise the changes originally proposed in 2015 by Amendment C182 to the Greater Dandenong Planning Scheme. To do this, an ‘amendment’ to the Greater Dandenong Planning Scheme is required. This amendment is known as Amendment C213. Specifically, Amendment C213 seeks to introduce and apply a new General Residential Zone Schedule 3 (GRZ3) to identified areas around activity centres, apply the default mandatory building height of 11 metres (3 storeys); and make changes to the minimum garden area and private open space requirements for new residential developments. You may inspect the amendment, any documents that support the amendment and the explanatory report about the amendment, free of charge, during office hours, at the following City of Greater Dandenong Customer Service centres: Noble Park Road, Keysborough and at the City of Greater Dandenong website www.greaterdandenong.com and Department of

New chief From front page Basketball Victoria and the DBA eventually backed down in an out-of-court settlement. The new chief executive Mr Walter said in a statement that he would work to enhance DBA's standing in the local and wider basketball community. "Dandenong Basketball has a rich history in junior and elite competition and I am confident we can take our outstanding community organisation to yet another level." Mr Allen didn't return the Star Journal's calls.

Redbacks, Falcons win big By Hayley Wildes In Round 5 of the Eastern Football League, Noble Park was no match for Vermont. The Bulls, who won their first three games of the season, slumped to their second loss in a row as Vermont ran out 15.25 (115) to 9.9 (63) winners. Bailey Lambert (three goals) was impressive up forward for Noble Park, while Jackson Sketcher and Ariek Lual battled hard all day. Rowville also suffered its second consecutive loss, falling to Norwood. The Hawks were in the contest at three quarter time, trailing by just 11 points, but a six-goal to one final term saw Norwood storm home, 12.12 (84) to 6.10 (46). Despite the disappointing fourth quarter fade-out, Mason Crozier and Bailey Morrish were best for the Hawks. In Division 2 of the Southern Football League, Springvale Districts - despite inaccuracy in front of goal - scored a win over Hampton at home, 8.15 (63) to 7.3 (45). Leading by one point at the final break, the Dees finished strongly to run out 18-point winners as Matt Wetering (three goals) dominated, while Matthew Thompson and Tom Wilkinson played key roles all day. In Division 3, it was a barnstorming day for local teams as Endeavour Hills and Hampton Park both recorded massive wins. Endeavour Hills piled on 12 goals and held Ashwood to just one-point in the first half of their clash to lead by 73 points at the main break. With Daniel Morrison (seven goals) and Jarrod Marolla (six goals) running riot, the onslaught continued in the second half as the Falcons ran out 120-point winners, 23.5 (143) to 3.5 (23). Daniel Strom and Daniel Cann were

goal-kickers as Hampton Park won 25.12 (162) to 2.5 (17). Peter Dye (four goals), Reece Smart (two goals), Cam Williamson (two goals), and Michael Laszczyk (two goals) were the other multiple goal-kickers for the Redbacks, while the likes of Laszczyk, Aaron Holden, Carver, and Shannon Henwood shone across the
board. Hampton Park and Endeavour Hills occupy the top two positions on the six-side Division 3 senior ladder, with just one loss between them. They’re clearly the standout outfits of the division, and at this stage could be looking at a blockbuster match-up right when it matters most, later in the year.
Cole’s incredible offensive masterclass By Hayley Wildes In a great weekend for the Dandenong Rangers, the NBL1 teams came away with three wins in four games during a back-to-back weekend in Tasmania. The Rangers women made it two wins from two games, claiming wins against the Hobart Huskies and Launceston Tornadoes. On Friday night against the Huskies, the Rangers came out to play from the opening tip. Yet another stellar performance from superstar Bec Cole (27 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists) - who returned to NBL1 action after last week helping Australia qualify for the FIBA 3x3 World Cup - led the Rangers home, 82-77. Backing up the night after, Dandenong easily accounted for Launceston, 114-75, with Cole (37 points, 7 assists and 3 rebounds) once again completely dominating. She was efficiency personified, going 14/16 from the field and scoring her 37 points in just
24 minutes in a truly incredible showing. With the two wins, the Rangers women improve to an impressive 8-1 record - sitting in second position in the standings, behind only the unbeaten Bendigo. The Rangers men, meanwhile, suffered a tough loss to Hobart on Friday night. But they bounced back in a big way the following night against North West Tasmania. Trailing by three points heading into the final quarter against the Huskies, the Rangers couldn’t keep pace in the clutch as Hobart claimed a 96-87 win. Tim Lang (19 points and 6 rebounds) and Keli Leaupepe (18 points and 9 rebounds) stood tall and battled hard all night. On Saturday night, Dandenong fell behind early against North West Tasmania, but a dominant 24-8 second quarter saw the team wrestle back momentum and they were never troubled again, running out 109-76 winners. In what was a great team effort, six players
scored in double figures - led by Sam Froling (21 points), who was signed by the Illawarra Hawks earlier in the week for the upcoming NBL season. Leaupepe (16 points and 16 rebounds) was again impressive in just 22 minutes of action. The efficiency of the Rangers, particularly on the offensive end of the court, was highlighted in the +/- column in particular, with skipper Lucas Barker shining with a +39 and Froling an equally impressive +35. The likes of Dexter Kernich-Drew (13 points in 23 minutes on-court) and Matt Kenyon (15 points, 4 boards, and 4 assists in 25 minutes) also had particularly efficient games. The Rangers men now own a 5-4 record, and sit in seventh on the 18-team ladder. Looking ahead, both the men’s and women’s teams face Nunawading in a double-header on Saturday night at Dandenong Stadium.

Forsyth’s thirst for runs By Nick Creely Champion Dandenong batsman Brett Forsyth has gone from a cricket-obsessed kid riding his bike to training at Springvale South to a Ryder Medal winner with an incurable thirst for runs. It's no mean feat; it's a culmination of how much blood, sweat and tears he has put in to succeeding in the game he loves. At the recent Ryder Medal, the dynamic opening batsman - who could be eyeing off 10,000 Premier Cricket runs in the next few season - became the first Panther to snare the top-gong after a truly remarkable season that netted almost 1300 runs in the toughest spot for a batsman to shine.

"I guess you know you've had a really good season, but to edge (some stars of the competition) out was really humbling and almost a bit embarrassing at times," Forsyth told the Journal. "The real reason we play is to win games of cricket and go deep into finals, so it's very different being an individual award, but I guess it sits a bit easier because I'm proud to win it as a Dandenong player." Talk has fuelled over whether Forsyth should be playing state cricket, and rightly so - opening batsmen with such consistency over a long-period of time don't grow on trees. But rather than focus on things out of his control, he is determined to remain grounded and focused on his job at hand next season. "I wouldn't say it's changed anything - with my performance, it's always been at a level where playing higher could be a potential outcome, but I've seen the pitfalls from many players, myself included, and when you look at doing that, you can take your focus of what your primary job is, and for me, that's to score runs," he said. "For me, (the Ryder) hasn't added any extra pressure on playing higher, it's just a positive that's it been spoken about, and I know a lot of other players have been spoken about for their performances. "To be honest, I'm a teacher and I'm enjoying that career at the moment, but if anything were to come up, like all players, I'd take it with both hands, but I'm not expecting that to happen." A strong culture - that all-important ingredient that brings successful sporting clubs from mediocre to revered - is one that draws Forsyth to Dandenong, it's what has kept him at Shepley Oval throughout his whole young adult life. "What we've been able to do is get some really good coaches in place - the key to our
Brett Forsyth enjoyed a stellar home and away season, carving 962 runs to top the competition. 187072 Picture: ROB CAREW club is keeping our more senior players at the club, because that means they can lead from the front on the field, but it helps to develop some off-field skills, whether that's at training, or just mentoring them," he said. "The coaches (Nick Speak and Paul Boraston) need to take credit for their work - they leave it up to the players to find ways to best develop, so the onus isn't on them, and it then creates a culture where everyone helps everyone. "It's just about building a good culture, bringing in some good players, and making it all work - we probably have three different age brackets, and those groups seem to get on well and help. "It's like an AFL list really, if they gel and all work well, it'll bring some really good results. With Liz Williamson, Gary Davidson, Mick Findlay and all the board off-field, they've made a huge effort to make it a great place to
be. We don't have any barriers to stop anyone from progressing and performing." Forsyth - who is a Springvale South junior said he owes a lot to the Bloods at Alex Nelson Reserve, describing them as yet another family for him. "Winning the Ryder gave me the chance to thank my club, and also my home club, and that's something you don't get to do too often," he said. "I was really lucky that I grew up around the corner from Springvale South. When I was younger I'd just ride my bike down to training four nights a week. That's where I started enjoying my cricket, and made me realise I could make something out of playing the game. "I was lucky to have to great coaching from a young age - Danny Law would coach me during the week and give me tips that not a lot of six to 12-year-old's would get at that age, so I was lucky they took me under the wing."
