Jason Wood with Jafri Katagar at his recent graduation. He’d told of how he spent 500 hours in English language classes, volunteered at South East Links in Springvale, applied fruitlessly for hundreds of jobs, and he’d been kicked out of Monash University because he could no longer afford to pay course fees. To his eternal gratitude, Mr Wood stepped in, giving him work at his office to better un-

derstand unemployment issues. The MP fought for Mr Katagara to be re-enrolled at university. He says Mr Wood personally rang employers to help “young Africans” get a job. He invited Mr Wood to his graduation ceremony, after completing his business degree. He is now studying a Masters of Social Work.

Liberal MP and new Federal assistant minister Jason Wood is not exactly flavor-of-the-month in African community circles. But he has earned the loyal support of Berwick refugee and Masters student Jafri Katagara, who arrived in Australia after his mother and father died in Uganda. To many it would be an unlikely friendship between Mr Katagara and the newly-appointed assistant customs, multicultural affairs and community safety minister. For Mr Katagara, their bond has been lifechanging. “We don’t agree with everything. We’ve had a few arguments but he’s not racist the way people think. “He’s helped me more than any other person in this country.” He says he argues with his “mentor” Mr Wood about the tone of his campaign against “African youth gangs”. Mr Wood’s Facebook posts and recent interviews have raised the ire and distrust of African communities, along with his call to deport “foreign-born thugs”. “I tell Jason that crime is committed by all groups of people,” Mr Katagara says. “I was against using the term ‘African gang’. I told him to use ‘youth gang’ or ‘youth crime’. “I told him it affects the entire African community.” Mr Katagara argues to Mr Wood that most young migrants and young Africans are “lawabiding in this country”. “There is only a tiny, tiny group of young boys not doing the right thing. “(Mr Wood) was a former police officer, he is tough on crime and he calls a spade a spade. “He believes if he doesn’t call the problem the way it is, how is it going to be resolved? “I told him it’s very good you’re fighting crime but for me, don’t racialize crime.“ Mr Katagara was an unemployed anti-racism campaigner when he first arrived at Mr Wood’s office to explain “what was happening in African communities”.
“Many Africans don’t find people to mentor them. They end up getting lost and heading in a wrong direction. “I wish all Africans could get a mentor like Jason Wood.” For the first time, he didn’t vote Labor but Liberal in the recent Federal Election. He handed out Liberal how-to-vote cards in La Trobe, despite being mocked by rival party supporters. He’s “proud” that Mr Wood won the tightly-contested seat. “Generally Africans support Labor because they see Liberal as anti-migrant, anti-Muslim and also the issue of refugees on Manus (Island) and Nauru. “They see the Liberals as a racist party. There is racism in all the parties - there’s good and bad in all of the parties. “I don’t see Jason Wood as a party but as a person. “Because of the way I know him, I think he’ll be a great minister especially for the multicultural community.” Mr Wood told Star News he was “tough” on deporting “thugs” on visas, but also delivered early-intervention programs to stop them going down that path. “I’ve been the one who has been the most outspoken person to secure funding for the African community.” One is a Les Twentyman Foundation-led program for at-risk youth in schools in the South East. It encourages them to stay at school and build resilience, he said. He’d also won funding and visa clearance for three Brazilian footballers for the Tour of Hope soccer program in refugee communities in the South East. “We just have to get young people who are disenfranchised something to do, rather than hanging around Fountain Gate and robbing people. “They’re otherwise going into the revolving door of crime and youth detention. “But anyone on a visa - it doesn’t matter from anywhere in the world - who commit home invasions, car jackings ... in my world, that doesn’t wash with me.”

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region
Tech start-up moves fast By Narelle Coulter Berwick software engineer Dr Saiyi Li and his colleagues are using their tech skills to help improve the lives of those with movement disorders. Dr Li is one of the brains behind tech startup Bayes Tech, a tele-rehabilitation platform. Dr Li’s passion and commitment to the project impressed judges who chose Bayes Tech as the winner of the inaugural INNovation Crowd Pitchfest held at Bunjil Place at the end of April. The Bayes Tech team also includes Dr Wei Yin Leong, an electronics engeineering specialist, and Dr Yee Siong Lee, a data scientist. “The idea for Bayes Tech originated from our study,“ explained Dr Li. “During our study, we realised that physiotherapy is important for people with movement disorders, injury and so on. However, some people find it hard to access rehabilitation resources, especially those living in rural areas. So we decided to develop a platform with the hope of helping therapists, patients and everyone who may need it." Bayes Tech has three aims: to save therapists time, make tedious rehab exercises fun and improve communication between therapists and patients. “We take advantage of advanced technology to automatically assess the physical performance of individuals at home similar as that in hospitals and make boring exercises fun, like playing computer games," Dr Li explained. “Therapists can review their patients’ performance and adjust treatment plans anytime, anywhere. More importantly, we try to build a platform that can be easily used by everyone.“ In Australia the number of hospitalisations for rehabilitation care increased from 355,000 in 2013-14 to 455,000 in 2016/17. Dr Li believes Bayes Tech could significantly reduce these numbers. “We have seen so many people with movement disorders in different age groups. My grandfather actually suffered from Parkinson’s Disease and could not do many of the activities of daily living," Dr Li said. “It is so sad to see people sitting in a wheelchair but cannot move their bodies. Physiotherapy is helpful to improve their abilities, but the resources are limited. We believe everyone has the right to enjoy a high quality life. Therefore, we try to use our knowledge and skills to develop a platform to provide help to more individuals with such needs and try to optimise the limited medical resources as much as we can.“
The innovators behind Bayes Tech, Dr Saiyi Li and Dr Yee Siong Lee. The team hope to have the first version of the product launched before the end of the year. INNovation Crowd leaders Chris Hall and Judy Pridmore are helping mentor the trio. “It was great to be part of Pitchfest. Pitchfest opened a window to show our idea to the world so that we can get more attention and help, which contributes enormously to our growth."
Dr Li said one of the most challenging aspects of getting Bayes Tech off the ground was gathering feedback and suggestions from therapists and patients. “ We are looking for collaboration with therapists in physical rehabilitation section to improve our system as fast as we can. “In 12 months, we intend to have our pilot program launched and can then start bring benefit to patients and therapists."
In five years time, Dr Li would like to see the platform used around the world. “We will collaborate with therapists to provide better physical rehabilitation services to patients and also with research centres to develop better assessments and exercises," he said. “The reason we know it will succeed is because we love what we are doing, we work hard to achieve our outcomes and we believe our product can help many people in need.“

Shelley is the Author of ‘The Dynamic Leader: Become the leader others are inspired to follow’. This month she writes exclusively for Grow on leadership. For most managers and business owners their first ‘leadership’ experience is often running frontline teams - the staff who have direct contact with your customers and influence the experience, reputation and loyalty to your business. In the early stages of your role as a leader, you’re likely to be ineffective as you try to figure out what to do, often with minimal guidance and support. And you may not consider this is an issue. What’s interesting, according to a Study of Australian Leadership, is that “frontline leadership effectiveness has a positive and significant relationship with employee engagement”. So while you’re trying to figure out how to lead you’re impacting the performance of your staff and the performance of the business. De-

spite this reality, training and development for first-time leaders continues to be significantly under invested in. In the absence of training and development you are likely to have a natural preference for either: People and building relationships. You may prioritise people over task and tend to focus on building relationships with your team. Or… Delivering outcomes. You prioritise task over people and tend to focus on getting things done. You move with purpose and always appear busy. What staff today want is a leader who is inspiring, cares about people and is interested in growth and development. This means, as a leader, you must be intentional in your actions and be aware of what’s going on around you, rather than simply doing what’s automatic. In my book I share the importance of leaders nurturing relationships as well as driving performance. One must not come at the expense of the other. For new leaders in particular, the concept of finding a balance between people and task can become overwhelming.
I share three core components for leaders to focus on: investing in relationships; inspiring respect; and influencing results. Invest in Relationships The first priority for a leader is to develop, deepen and nurture relationships with their staff. Be authentic and take a genuine interest in who they are as people, not just employees. Inspire Respect The second priority for a leader is to earn the respect of their staff. This involves seeing other perspectives and acknowledging that there are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ ways of doing things, just different. When leaders can swap judgement for curiosity and take on different views and opinions, they let go of their tight grip on reality and become open to possibility. Influence Results The third priority is to empower staff to perform at their best. According to the study more than 40% of Australian workplaces “are not meeting their performance targets for return on investment and profitability”. This supports the need for clear objectives, realistic timeframes and a commitment to deliver on their promise. Leader need to hold their staff
Author and leadership expert, Shelley Flett. accountable for their commitments and create the right environment, support and encouragement for them to learn and grow. Development is critical for leaders at any level to ensure their focus isn’t in just one area. Leaders who are balanced in their approach and intentional about what they do will inspire others to follow and will learn to ‘do different’ rather than ‘do more’. ‘The Dynamic Leader: Become the leader others are inspired to follow’ is published by Major Street Publishing and is available for $29.95. IN BRIEF Parkmore robbery attempt: 15yo boys arrested
Dandenong mum murdered in bath By Cam Lucadou-Wells A jilted man who drowned a former partner in her Dandenong home while her child was sleeping inside has been jailed. Murat Davsanoglu, 44, had pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court of Victoria to murder after mid-trial abandoning his claims of a suicide pact with the victim. His defence crumbled under cross-examination when he conceded he "snapped" and killed her. "This is yet another case of a man inflicting his will on a woman by the use of fatal violence in her home," sentencing judge Les Lasry said on 24 May. "Whilst the circumstances of this case are unusual to a degree, in other respects, they are all too familiar. "Violence by men against women remains of epidemic proportions, and it simply must be stemmed." On 14 July 2017, Davsanoglu held Oxlem Karakov, 34, underwater in a bathtub with a
"significant degree of force" as they lay in the bath together. Her child slept in her bedroom at the time. Davsanoglu then abandoned the child by driving off with Ms Karakov's body in his car boot to South Australia. He later told police he planned to cross the Nullarbor Plain to dispose of her into the ocean in accordance with her wishes. On the way, he slit his wrist with a knife that he bought from Bunnings in Murray Bridge, South Australia. The self-inflicted wound was not a "genuine attempt to kill yourself", Justice Lasry said. "But, rather, a means for you to explain your involvement in the killing of the deceased by reference to a so-called suicide pact." Davsanoglu drove back to Melbourne, leaving Ms Karakov's body in a garage of an unoccupied property he had previously leased. In turning himself into police, he told them that he and the victim were "boyfriend and girlfriend" for 18 years. Their relationship continued while she
was married to another man with a child, he claimed. Three weeks before Ms Karakov's murder, she was engaged to re-marry another man, the court heard. "In this case, you killed the deceased in circumstances where she intended to cease her relationship with you and pursue another (with) whom she had decided to marry," Justice Lasry said. "You used violence as a means to control a woman that you were in a romantic relationship with." The Turkish-born Davsanoglu's childhood was marred by domestic violence as well as estrangement from his parents. He had no prior convictions for violence, leading a largely lawabiding life, Justice Lasry noted. Davsanoglu's prospects for rehabilitation were positive but it was important that he understood the consequences of his actions, the judge said. He was jailed for up to 23 years, and eligible for parole after 18 years.
Faraway friendships move a step closer By Cam Lucadou-Wells The first steps to building friendships between students in Greater Dandenong and China have been cemented. On 29 May, Springvale Rise Primary School took hold of a spectacular scroll of calligraphy created by students from Quiang Quiang Street School in the city of Xuzhou. It was presented by Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades, who set up the exchange with schools during a council trip to China earlier in the month. As part of the same effort, Chandler Park Primary School has struck up an exchange with No 134 Primary School in Xuzhou. "These kids might never get on a plane and go to China but now they've got friends over there," Cr Blades said. During her Chinese visit, Cr Blades found great enthusiasm from politicians and schools, especially about Greater Dandenong schools' multiculturalism. "It's because it's about schools and kids. The kids bring everyone together." At one school, she was greeted with an elaborate welcome ceremony including a costumed opera performance by students. Introductory letters, photos and contact details between the schools have been warmly swapped, with a view to email and video conferencing between students. It was a step towards Springvale Rise Primary School looking internationally, Cr Sean O'Reilly said.
A 17-year-old boy has fled from two teens who attempted to rob him outside Parkmore shopping centre. The victim was approached by the 15-yearold males on Chandler Road, Keysborough about 3.30pm on Tuesday 21 May. One of the would-be robbers demanded the victim's phone or he'd bash the victim. The same alleged offender then pulled a rolled-up piece of clothing from his bum-bag, claiming that he had a gun. The victim escaped without injury, running into the nearby shopping centre and alerting its security guards. The guards detained the alleged robbers until police arrived and arrested the pair. The teen, who allegedly claimed to have a gun, was charged by police and remanded. The other was bailed on charges.
Car stolen in Noble Park agg burg A resident's Mitsubishi Lancer vehicle and car keys have been stolen in an aggravated burglary in Noble Park. The share-house in Jennings Street was believed to have been burgled between 2.30am5.30am on Monday 27 May. A 28-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and a 4-year-old boy were among the sleeping occupants at the time. Unknown burglars broke in through an unlocked rear door, stealing the car keys and the red Lancer parked in the driveway. Later that morning, the car's owner awoke to find that the Lancer was gone. It was recovered in Kirkham Road, Dandenong. Any information to Greater Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au
Burglary in Apex Street A couple were awoken as burglars tried to break into their home in Apex Street, Dandenong. While in bed, the male and female in their 30s heard noises at their home's door about 1.40am on Tuesday 21 May. The home's electricity was also cut off at the time. Police were called and discovered evidence of an attempted break-in on the locked rear security-door. Burglars had also stolen a wallet from a car parked in the back-yard, as well as tools from the premises' garden shed.

"We can visualise many of the students will be working in jobs that will require them to have a really good understanding of Chinese culture and business practices." Springvale Rise principal Debbie Cottier said one of the school's values was embracing
diversity of culture, religion and thinking. "When we talked about this with our kids, they were absolutely excited. The staff were equally so." Several staff and students already speak Mandarin and Cantonese, which should help speed up the translation process. Springvale Rise is also starting to enrol international students from China.
Echo Taskforce detectives arrested 12 people and seized drugs, cash and weapons during warrants across Melbourne's south eastern suburbs this week. The warrants were executed with assistance from Dandenong Divisional Response Unit as part of an investigation into an alleged drug trafficking syndicate. On Tuesday, 21 May warrants were executed at eight properties in Keysborough, Cranbourne North, Springvale South, Mulgrave and Dandenong North. Nine people, including seven men and two women, were arrested and charged with a range of drug, weapons and proceeds of crime offences.

Council joins pokies fight By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council will fight against a central Dandenong hotel's plan for 25 extra poker machines. Castello Group has applied to the state's gambling regulator to transfer 25 of its 30 gaming machines from the Jim Dandy Hotel to Players Hotel in Scott Street. As part of a $750,000 renovation, the gaming lounge at Players Hotel - previously known as Nu Hotel - will double from 25 to 50 machines. The move would result in five less machines in Greater Dandenong, and the closure of the Jim Dandy as a pokies venue, Castello argued in its submission to the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation. "Given the location of the Jim Dandy Hotel and the problems it has encountered in the past, the Castello Group shares the Council's view that it would be of great benefit to the Dandenong community if the venue was closed," Castello stated. It plans to add a cafe and bistro to the "tired" Players Hotel, which requires "substantial work to be reinvigorated as a competitive venue". At a 27 May council meeting, Cr Matthew Kirwan noted Castello's own submission showed that gaming losses would rise by $4.5million at Players. Overall gaming losses in Greater Dandenong would rise by an estimated $1.9 million. Its main catchment area was Dandenong - the municipality's most disadvantaged residents with among the lowest incomes and
English fluency in Melbourne, Cr Kirwan said. The venue would be a temptation for people attending nearby welfare agencies and Centrelink, he said. "It's a terrible place for a gambling venue, and it's a terrible place to make an even bigger one." Cr Jim Memeti said residents didn't have the "extra cash to play or gamble in any shape or form". "This community has had enough. We must say no to further machines. "We actually have to get less machines. "We've have enough of broken families, we've had enough of people having not enough money to heat their houses ... because people get sucked in and it's addictive." Cr Tim Dark, in support of the application, said it was "different" because it sought to reduce the overall poker machine numbers. "I find it very difficult to oppose something when you look at reducing the machines and reducing the harm in Greater Dandenong." Cr Sean O'Reilly said the gambling industry didn't seem to entertain harm minimisation measures such as $1 maximum bets. "The council only has the blunt instrument of opposing poker machines as is in our policy. "I hope this industry one day can take more responsibility and we can perhaps meet them somewhere halfway." The application will be heard at the Victorian Commision for Gambling and Liquor Regulation on 11 June.

Bright start for Doveton hub Doveton's spectacular new community hub opened to fanfare and sunshine at a celebration on Saturday 25 May. The $5.27 million Autumn Place Community Hub includes a redeveloped four-year-olds kindergarten with outdoor play spaces, two maternal and child health consulting rooms and a multi-purpose room, kitchen and courtyard. It also includes an improved outdoors park, playground and barbecue area. The celebrations on 25 May included free family activities, a sausage sizzle, face painting and a mobile animal farm. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, who opened the hub, said it would help local families "meaningfully connect". It was critical for the development of young children, she said. "It will be an important hub for inclusion and community engagement as well as the sharing of knowledge and ideas, fostering new connections." Local Government Minister Adem Somyu-
rek, whose government had contributed $3.6 million, said "we're getting on with delivering the facilities our growing communities need". Casey Council funded the remaining $1.67 million for the project. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said the integrated community hub in the "heart of Doveton" was a place for residents to "meet, learn, play, socialise and connect". Councillors Wayne Smith and Damien Rosario encouraged the local community to join the celebrations. "We're proud of the revitalisation that has occurred in Doveton's town centre and look forward to celebrating these recent upgrades, which make it a more inviting and well-utilised space," Cr Rosario said. The Government has provided more than $25 million to the hub and 15 other projects in City of Casey through its Growing Suburbs Fund. The projects include Chalcot Lodge Childrens Centre and the Casey cycling precinct.

Budget wins for schools By Cam Lucadou-Wells Upgraded schools, level crossing removals, a new bus route and extra rail services will be funded under the 2019-’20 State Budget. Dandenong High School’s modernisation continues, with $8.5 million for new STEM, canteen and food technology facilities over the next three years. Noble Park English Language School will get a $3.4 million upgrade, with a new modular building. Dandenong West Primary School, Lyndale Secondary College, Keysborough South P-6, Keysborough Secondary College, Noble Park Secondary College, Silverton Primary School and Springvale Rise Primary School also receive capital-works funding. The Government has “stepped in” with $3 million to help support asylum seekers stripped of their federal Status Resolution Support Services (SRSS) payments.
It will fund services like trauma counselling, food and clothes, subsidised medication and housing assistance. There are believed to be at least 148 asylum seekers in Greater Dandenong, who have been made effectively destitute after being cut from the SRSS Other budget highlights include funding to remove Greens Road and Webster Street level crossings, $750,000 towards a sports pavilion at Ross Reserve, Noble Park as well as a new bus route on Chapel Road, Keysborough. Extra rail services are expected to run on the Dandenong corridor after the completion of the Cranbourne-Pakenham line upgrade and introduction of high-capacity metro trains. There was an allocation for extra parking at railway stations, including Dandenong (150 spaces), Yarraman (55 spaces) and Lynbrook. About $340 million was provided for up to 18 new VLocity regional-network trains to be built at Bombardier in Dandenong.
The Dandenong-based RusCare, which provides aged care for residents of Russian and Slavic backgrounds, received $800,000 for upgrades. The Gurdwara Sahib Temple in Keysborough receives $100,000 towards renovations. It was a budget that delivered for families and commuters, according to Dandenong Labor MP Gabrielle Williams. “Families in Dandenong will have the facilities they deserve, which will benefit our community, our kids and our parents,” Ms Williams said. “This Budget delivers for commuters in Dandenong - no matter how they travel - and supports local jobs at the same time.” The State Opposition described it as an “economic ticking time bomb” of higher taxes and debt doubling to $59 billion. “Economic growth is slowing while unemployment and cost of living are rising,” opposition treasurer Louise Staley said.
“And Daniel Andrews’ answer is to introduce more taxes and increase debt.” South East Metropolitan Liberal MP Gordon Rich-Phillips said the Government failed to provide new road or health commitments in Greater Dandenong for the next four years. “ Dandenong has missed out on new investment, while Daniel Andrews’ reckless spending blows out debt to a record of $59.4 billion. “This is more than $23,000 debt for each Victorian household.” Mr Rich-Phillips said it was “sheer bloodymindedness” for the Government to turn its back on $4 billion federal funds to build East West Link. “Instead, motorists moving between the eastern and western suburbs will remain stuck in congestion and that means less time with family and friends. “Daniel Andrews must not let his ego stop the Federal Liberal Government from delivering this much needed road to Victoria.”
State offers SRSS help in rescue package By Cam Lucadou-Wells The State Government has announced a $3 million rescue package to help asylum seekers and refugees cut from vital Federal payments. Greater Dandenong Council believes at least 148 asylum seekers in the council area have been made effectively without income after being cut from the Status Resolution Support Services payments. There are another 350 at immediate risk, whose SRSS eligibility are pending assessment by the Department of Home Affairs. The statewide funding package, announced in the 2019 State Budget, will go towards services like trauma counselling, food and

clothes, subsidised medication and housing assistance. Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades, who chairs the Local Government Mayoral Taskforce into reversing the SRSS cuts, welcomed the support. She said former SRSS recipients faced real risks of homelessness and destitution. For the first time, people were queuing for food at neighbourhood houses in Dandenong, Noble Park and Springvale, Cr Blades said. A neighbourhood house reported lines forming up to 90 minutes before opening. Other agencies are also reporting their resources being stretched.
“We are all very concerned for the welfare of people seeking asylum and the impact recent funding cuts have had, not only financially, but also on their health and wellbeing,” Cr Blades said. “I am very pleased (Mental Health Minister Martin) Foley acknowledges and recognises this issue.” Cr Blades urged people to donate non-perishable food to their nearest neighbourhood house. The Federal Government’s line has been that the SRSS is “not a social welfare program”. “It is designed to provide short-term, tailored support to those who have demonstrated barriers to resolving their immigration status.

50 years ago 5 June 1969 The magic of Myers? What condition or concessions would the Myer Emporium require to build in the heart of Dandenong? The big retail firm is known to be interested in this district, and may be looking at developing another Chadstone or Eastland on the outskirts of Dandenong or either the Dingley or Mulgrave by-pass roads. Land for possible development there has already been brought if not by Myers then by other firms. A Dandenong businessman said yesterday: "If Myers open at say Hallam they'll take a lot of their mates with them ... . Then it won't be a matter of Myers being on the
outskirts of Dandenong, but of Dandenong being on the outskirts of Myers." Council owns land in Clow St, opposite the municipal officers and adjoining Woolworths on which it has a depot. Myers are angling for it and are believed to have options on residential properties between Clow and McCrae Sts.
20 years ago 7 June 1999 The most taxing question GST News of the hybrid Goods and Services Tax is dividing opinion everywhere. The Journal visited the Hub Arcade to talk to shoppers and store owners to get a feeling from some local views. The question was simple: "Will we be better or worse off with a GST?" Maria Roussos: "We don't want it; it's going to hit people, especially with groceries. If they can't afford to eat, people will steal. It's going to cause a lot of problems I think, especially for unemployed people." Bevis Glynn:
"Definitely worse off. Things will be more expensive. It's very messy. I just believe the poor will be poorer ... ..everybody's got a different opinion of course.
5 years ago 2 June 2014 Black days for sheep Embattled Springvale sheep owner Vu Ho has new cause to worry for his pet Baa's worsening health. Last Monday, Mr Ho discovered a tumour had re-emerged on Baa's right shoulder - in the same place as a cancer was removed some months ago. "She is still going but in the past few days, we discovered a new lump and she has been a bit weaker. She can walk around but it's difficult for her to rise from a lying position. Mr Ho was unsure if the 17 year old Baa could endure another operation. She has had part of her right ear cut off to remove skin cancer last year. She's too old for all of these operations.

Call for sustainable lives Champions for green-living will be celebrated in the upcoming annual Greater Dandenong Sustainability Awards. In their fifth year, the awards recognise those who make efforts for sustainable living and workplaces. One of last year's finalists was Athol Road Primary School. Staff member Bryan Hunter created a waste audit at the school, finding that two-thirds of its waste could be recycled. The school then initiated a Closing the Loop waste program, which reduced its landfill waste by 50 per cent. The 2019 awards are open in two categories
- community and industry. The sustainable community category is open to schools, community groups, volunteer groups, clubs, associations, households and individual residents, employees and students. The winner receives a $500 voucher, with finalists claiming $150 vouchers. The sustainable industry category covers commercial, industrial and retail businesses as well as residential and non-residential new developments. Entries close on Friday 21 June, 4pm. Details: www.greaterdandenong.com/sustainabilityawards.

His life for others By Casey Neill
Lee Tarlamis.
Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate. His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June. The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said. “I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement. “It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people. “It’s a view that I formed very early on.” Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17. “The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was
throughout those two years,” he said. “It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me. “That’s why I got involved in the local community.” Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre. “The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.” There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer. “That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said. “That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.” He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014. “That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said. Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.
He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings. The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up. The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old. He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands. Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business. “I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said. “I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that. “I really enjoyed the community stuff. “Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Saying sorry over bacon By Cam Lucadou-Wells A patient at Dandenong Hospital, who had requested halal food, has told of her great shame and embarrassment after being served bacon in her soup. The patient, who wishes not to be identified, was devastated after eating the minestrone soup in the maternity ward on 1 August despite clearly marking her menu paper with the word 'halal'. "Only after consuming a few spoonfuls believing that they 'respect' others' dietary requirements - I saw some pink-coloured pieces that looked like bacon. "I immediately stopped eating and felt extremely shocked and heartbroken." It took several days of enquiries before catering staff confirmed the blunder, apologized and walked away, she says. Though consoled that she ate the non-halal meal by mistake, she says she is still wracked by "life-long guilt and pain". Normally, she makes great efforts not to consume non-halal products. She'd never eaten pork previously. She fastidiously checks her grocery items, including their additive numbers, to ensure they are halal. "I went through an emotional trauma where
it should be a happy time with a newborn baby. "I never told this (incident) to anyone in my family, except for my husband, due to my embarrassment." Three months later, a staff member said he'd investigate the matter to ensure it didn't happen again. But the patient says she hasn't heard back from the hospital. She contacted Star News in the hope that the hospital doesn't make the same mistake. Bacon and other pork products are among the list of non-halal or haram foods. According to the Islamic Council of Victoria website, "the prayer of a person is rejected by Allah if the food consumed is prohibited (haram)". A spokesperson for Monash Health said the hospital served hundreds of meals for patients with a wide range of dietary requirements, including halal, every day. "We have discussed this incident with the patient and would like to again offer our sincere apologies for any distress caused during their stay at Dandenong Hospital. "Every effort is made to ensure the dietary and cultural needs of our patients are accommodated. "We continuously review and improve our food service processes. As part of these reviews, we are considering how we can better accommodate cultural dietary needs."
Hands of support go up A Sea of Hands has visited Dandenong South Primary School during National Reconciliation Week. Staff and students signed and wrote messages of support for reconciliation on the hands, which were installed on Tuesday 28 May.
It was an echo of the landmark showpiece of about 70,000 hands outside Parliament House in Canberra in 1997. The touring installations are organised by national advocacy group ANTaR.

FOCUS ON … SENIORS ENJOYING LIFE
Call for action on aged care
Raising the heart factor This Men's Health Week, it's important to address the biggest killer in men: cardiovascular disease. Also known as heart disease, cardiovascular disease is Australia's leading single cause of death, leading to a death in Australia every 28 minutes. Heart disease is often a lifestyle disease and as such includes risk factors around the food you eat, the amount of alcohol you drink as well as how regularly you exercise and whether you smoke. But cardiovascular disease doesn't need to be a death sentence. For many Australians, making simple lifestyle changes can help reduce their risk of disease, such as eating a diet rich in fruits and grains or getting thirty minutes of exercise a day. To encourage awareness of cardiac health and also discuss the warning signs and symptoms of heart disease, St John of God Hospital Berwick is hosting a free seminar led by renowned general and interventional cardiologist Dr James Sapontis. Dr Sapontis is a leader in the field of complex coronary intervention and a clinical researcher at MonashHeart as well as a principal investigator in many clinical trials into cardiovascular disease. The event, taking place on the 11th of June at 5.30PM in St John of God's Granada Conference Room, will also include an opportunity for attendees to get a professional answer on any questions they may have regarding cardiac health.
St John of God Berwick Hospital places importance on the health of all men, including their caregivers. If you are interested in attending the free seminar, contact Gillian Coyle on (03)87845029 or email Gillian.Coyle@sjog.org.au.
National Seniors has called on the new Morrison Government to prioritise fixing Australia’s ailing aged care system. The leading seniors’ advocacy organisation has said that action is needed now, with an interim report from the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety not due until October, and the final report in April 2020. National Seniors’ Chief Advocate, Ian Henschke, said a new cabinet, new Minister for Seniors, and a new Labor leadership provided the opportunity for government and opposition to demonstrate the leadership Australians need and expect. “Critical issues in aged care have already been exposed by the Royal Commission – at this point, all parties should get on with the job of fixing them immediately. “We congratulate Scott Morrison on his success, his new cabinet and new Minister for Aged Care and Senior Australians Senator, Richard Colbeck. We look forward to working with Senator Colbeck and others and urge him to make the disgraceful shortage of home care packages a top priority. “As the Royal Commission heard, the problem and the fix are obvious – nearly 16,000 people died last year waiting for home care packages, and almost 130,000 people are still on the waiting list. “The fix is to invest the $2 billion to $2.5 billion dollars annually in more home care packages, as estimated by the Health Department. Greater investment in home care will reduce costs in other parts of the aged care system because, without it, older Australians will be forced into more expensive residential care. “The Royal Commission has uncovered appalling evidence of aged care failure and it is time for all parties to commit to action and explain to voters their plans and resourcing for fixing the system,” he said. Mr Henschke also welcomed the an-
Aged care must be the Morrison Goverment's top priority according to National Seniors. nouncement of a review of Australia’s retirement income system by the Treasurer. “National Seniors has been calling for a comprehensive review of the retirement income system for many years. We hope that this will result in a simpler system that provides both an adequate safety net and rewards those who have saved for their retirement. The current system doesn’t incentivise personal responsibility, and it doesn’t meet the costs associated with longer lives and changing needs. “National Seniors stands ready to work with the Morrison Government and opposition parties to develop and action policies for older Australians. The young people of today are the older Australians of tomorrow. For too long, seniors’ policies have been inadequate, stop-gap, and politicised. We can and must do better.”

NEWS
Paesano brings variety By Danielle Kutchel Do you prefer your cheese platter with a side of teppanyaki? Your lasagne with butter chicken? Or perhaps you're a pizza and sushi kind of person. Whatever tickles your tastebuds, you'll find it at Paesano International Buffet, newly opened in Springvale. Don't be fooled by the Italian name: the latest entrant in the Paesano group offers much more than standard pizza and pasta, and sits well within the foodie heaven that is Springvale. A stroll past the buffet stations reveals a smorgasbord of international cuisines: there are stir-fries, Indian curries complete with homemade naan, fresh rolls of sushi, a teppanyaki grill, varieties of pasta and a wood-fired pizza oven. Sweet tooths catered for with cannolis, tiramisu, cream puffs and more. Co-owner and manager Frank Capuzzi says it was an easy decision to launch an 'international' buffet. "Today everybody wants variety; when you go out, you get one person that wants Italian, another wants Chinese and so on. So, you can come here and get the best of everything! "At a standard restaurant, it is difficult to know off a menu what the meal is going to be like, whereas with a buffet you see everything before you take it and therefore you are selecting with your eyes," he explains. Each station is open, giving diners a glimpse into a lively kitchen. Mr Capuzzi explains it was important to find chefs who were proficient in their cuisine, so that the food is as authentic as possible. Dietary requirements and preferences are fully catered for; if, for example, a customer wants a certain type of sushi and the ingredients are on hand, the sushi chef will roll it up. Pizzas and pastas are cooked to order and for the Friday seafood buffet uses fresh Australian seafood. "We make our own desserts including our
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL famous tiramisu that we've been making for a long time, and we make our own pasta," Mr Capuzzi says. A favourite dish is the pollo funghi gnocchi, which Mr Capuzzi, a self-taught chef, says is cooked in a specific way: the mushrooms are first sauteed to release the flavour, then added to the chicken and cream so that the flavour permeates the entire dish. When it arrives at the table, the colour of the sauce is noticeably different to other versions and the flavour is richer, with a more rustic feel - a testament to the cooking process. Originally an electrician by trade, Mr Capuzzi says he fell into the restaurant business when helping a friend to set up another Italian food chain. He was energised by the restaurant business and began moving into cooking, before opening Michelangelo's in Burwood with his mother, Nonna Clara, and business partner Angelo LoMonaco in 1997. Over 20 years later, the two have been brought together again at Paesano International Buffet. Mr LoMonaco says the new Springvale restaurant is a rebirth of a concept they tried in Wheelers Hill several years ago. "We've been looking for a site ever since to do the concept again. What it offers is a variety of cuisines, and value for money. You've got entrees, mains, desserts, as much as you want of it, for the two hour session." It's also an efficient way of dining, according to Mr Capuzzi - "people don't have to think 'what should I order'; as soon as they walk in

Cole wins gold in China By Hayley Wildes Dandenong Ranger Bec Cole has once again lit up the world stage, this time leading Australia to gold at the 2019 FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup in China, as well as taking home prestigious MVP honours and being named to the Team of the Tournament. Cole, who has been on fire for the Rangers in NBL1 recently, was the star of the tournament which ran from 22-26 May with her trademark aggressiveness and speed helping her dominate 3x3 games. When asked about her aggressiveness and whether that's a key to her game, Cole made it clear she knows it's her bread and butter. "I think that's something why you'd pick me on your team," Cole said. "I'm powerful, I'm aggressive, I want to get to the rim and I want to play hard defence." The 3x3 format is fast-paced and with games lasting just 10 minutes. There is little time to settle in - and that suits a player like Cole to perfection. Heading into the tournament, Australia was seeded eighth in the world, but that meant little as the side quickly stamped its authority. The Australian team went through the tournament undefeated; taking care of New Zealand (17-15) and China (16-14) in tough and exciting pool games, before scoring wins over the Philippines (21-16) and Mongolia (21-15) in quarter-final and semi-final match-ups, respectively. That set up a date with Kazakhstan and in a battle between two undefeated teams in the final, Australia absolutely took over. The Australians jumped out to an early
lead and never looked back, completing a gold medal run with a 20-9 victory. Cole recorded six points and eight rebounds in the final, seeing her tally for the tournament rise to an equal tournament-best 34 points. Before heading over to China, Cole spoke about the Asia Cup being another great stepping stone for the Australian team as it looks towards to the FIBA 3x3 World Cup from 18-23 June. "[The 3x3 Asia Cup] is another good tournament we can use to keep growing, keep building and get some reps in us - I'm really, really looking forward to it," she said. "The World Cup is in Amsterdam, so that's pretty cool, and we'll be playing a lot of good teams so it will be hard, but I think Australia, as a country, we've proven ourselves and now it's time to do it on the world stage." With a FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup gold around her neck and MVP honours to her name, Cole and her Australian teammates look set to make plenty of noise when the FIBA 3x3 World Cup kicks off later this month. While Cole continues to dominate the 3x3 world of basketball, her season with the Rangers in NBL1 has been nothing short of extraordinary. Currently averaging a league-best 32.5 points per game, along with 5.1 assists (topfive in the league), 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game, Cole is an absolute monster on both ends of the court. With a player of her calibre leading the Dandenong charge, there's no doubt the Rangers are shaping as being a real threat at the pointy end of the NBL1 season.

The Saints are on the move to Bayside By Nick Creely St Brigid's/St Louis Cricket Club has officially departed the Dandenong District Cricket Association, joining the ever-growing Cricket Southern Bayside competition in a bid to help continue growing the club into the future. St Brigid's - which participated in Turf 2 last season and stunned all in its wake to claim its first DDCA Twenty20 title - is the second club to have left the DDCA this off-season, after powerhouse local club Mordialloc also opted to join Southern Bayside. Saints president Noel Fitzgibbon said the decision was in the best interests for the club moving forward, and hopes to forge new rivalries locally. "We wanted a new direction, and wanted to take the club locally, and we'll benefit with more juniors coming through and playing," he said. "We'll get more sponsors for the club, so not only we'll get more juniors and playing coming through, it'll be beneficial for our sponsors as well. "It'll certainly help rekindle a few rivalries from the past, playing the Aspendale and Mentone's of the world." While starting to develop into a strong club in the DDCA after claiming a stunning Twenty20 premiership, Fitzgibbon said that despite some recent success, the move had been spoken about for a long while now. "We've been talking to Southern Bayside for more than a year now, and as a committee, you need to explore all avenues and what's beneficial for the club," he said. "It was (Twenty20 premiership) a great icing on the cake for our time in the DDCA." And while moving away from the DDCA, Fitzgibbon said the club's long-running association with the competition will be looked on with great positivity and pride. But they simply couldn't sustain themselves long-term in their situation. "The DDCA is a very professionally run competition, and I've said that in the past, it's more the location, and travelling out to the City of Dandenong, Casey, the Berwicks and Beaconsfields of the world, it's just too far for these kids coming through the lower grades," he said. "We're very proud (of the time in the dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
Rays reach recognition By Hayley Wildes
St Brigid's/St Louis has officially departed the DDCA. 190565 DDCA) - the club continues to grow. We've got 13 junior sides and they are starting to filter through to the senior grades. "We were probably on the cusp of jumping up a grade or getting better because of the youth coming through. "The DDCA's been great for us, and we're happy with our time there, but we've been listening to our members, and they've sort of

indicated that they preferred to play locally." With the Saints' departure from the DDCA, the make-up of the Turf 1 and 2 grades will now need to potentially be re-jigged, with the potential for St Mary's going to Turf 2 and Mordialloc leaving the competition paving the way for Narre South and Narre North to go into Turf 1, while the Saints' departure could see Dandenong West stay in Turf 2, with Lyndale set to jump up from Turf 3.
The Dandenong Stingrays' incredible start to the 2019 NAB League season has been recognised with seven players being selected to the 37-man Vic Country squad for the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. Vic Country kicked off its 2019 Championships campaign on Saturday at the MCG against rivals Vic Metro and there will be a strong Rays contingent representing the team throughout the tournament, which continues throughout June and July. The seven Dandenong players named to the Vic Country squad are; Ned Cahill, Cody Weightman, Lachlan Williams, Bigoa Nyuon, Sam De Koning, Blake Kuipers and Hayden Young - who has been named vice-captain. Young, who continues to impress and looks a likely top five pick in the 2019 AFL Draft, has been on fire in the midfield for Dandenong this season and with his silky skills and ball-winning ability will be a name to keep an eye on. Ned Cahill came into his own in the latter stages of Dandenong's run to the 2018 TAC Cup premiership and he hasn't missed a beat in 2019. He's quick, smart and has a natural goal-sense that not too many players possess. His draft stock is rising and a strong Championships campaign could see him truly announce himself as a player to watch in the lead-up to the draft. In further exciting news for the Stingrays' program, Mitch Riordan was selected second overall by the Gold Coast Suns in last week's AFL mid-season rookie draft. Riordan, who co-captained the Rays to the 2018 TAC Cup premiership, will get his chance in the AFL system after being overlooked in the 2018 draft. Having played six games for the Rays this season, Riordan departs immediately to join the Suns and he will be a big loss as they look to defend their crown. But with the Rays standing unbeaten after seven games, there's no doubt they are giving themselves every opportunity to have a real tilt once again. Monday, 3 June, 2019

Hawks win after the siren By Hayley Wildes
Lachlan McDonald played a key role in Rowville’s two-point win over Noble Park. 194127 The Doveton Eagles bounced back in style from two consecutive losses to defeat Heatherton and solidify their place inside the top four. Kernich-Drew leads Dandenong home By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Rangers went one from two at the State Basketball Centre on Saturday night in NBL1 action. The Rangers men came out firing against the Knox Raiders and led 44-32 at the main break as Lucas Barker was his usual do-it-all self with 6 assists, 5 points and 5 rebounds in the first half. To the Raiders’ credit, they roared back into the contest in the third quarter with fierce defence and the pairing of Adam Thoseby and Mike Rose catching fire. Dandenong just couldn’t get its offence going and Knox won the quarter convincingly, 34-15. With the Raiders suddenly feeling good about themselves, they took a seven-point lead into the final break. Dandenong’s Dexter Kernich-Drew had struggled all game long with his shot, but he got going in the fourth and after three minutes
of play, the Rangers were within one-point, 6766. When Tim Lang completed an and-one with three minutes to go, Dandenong hit the lead, 74-73. With the game on the line in the closing minute, it was Dandenong which executed better and made the game-winning plays. With 47 seconds to go, guard Declan Soukup grabbed a key defensive rebound and, despite Kernich-Drew missing a triple on the other end, big man Tim Lang almost flew into the stands chasing the offensive board - throwing it back to Kernich-Drew who was fouled with 23 seconds on the clock. Kernich-Drew hit both free throws and, with seven seconds remaining, he hit another pair to give the Rangers a five-point lead and the win, 81-76. It was a great team effort with all players who stepped on the floor doing their part, including Barker (8 assists, 7 points and 5 re-

bounds) - who left the game late with an ankle injury. Kernich-Drew (17 points) led the way, while Sam Froling (15 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists) and Tim Lang (11 rebounds, 8 points and 3 assists) were also particularly important. Meanwhile, earlier in the night, the Rangers women fell to the Raiders after a valiant comeback attempt. Despite a great outing from Colleen Planeta (25 points and 8 rebounds) and an inspired effort from Aimie Clydesdale (11 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists) - who played every single second of the game - former Ranger Lauren Scherf (33 points and 26 rebounds) tore the game apart with a truly dominant performance. With no Bec Cole, the Rangers’ offence just couldn’t get the buckets needed down the stretch and fell 76-65. The Rangers have a week off and will return to action against the Southern Sabres at home on 15 June.

board. The Burras’ forwards were a class above the Caulfield backline and it showed from the outset as the likes of Tim Werner (six goals), Geoffrey Humphreys and Matthew Carnelley (four goals each) ran riot inside the forward 50 in an eventual 100-point win, 21.10 (136) to 5.6 (36).

In a clash between local foes in the Eastern Football League, Rowville and Noble Park played out an enthralling battle at Seebeck Oval. It was a clash that shaped as an intriguing one and it played out as a nailbiter. The Bulls came out hard early to lead by 14 points at the first break, but the Hawks responded and at the main break Noble Park led by five points, 5.3 (33) to 4.4 (28). The second half would turn into a classic encounter and, with stars from both teams putting on a show - including the likes of Kyle Martin and Nik Schoenmakers - it was a truly great game of football. With a quarter to play, the Bulls held a slender one-point lead, 7.4 (46) to 6.9 (45). In an intense final few minutes of the fourth, Rowville did enough to get over the line by two points, 10.13 (73) to 11.5 (71), in the game of the season. There were two lead changes in the final 30 seconds of play, with Tom Lockman slotting a long-range set shot after the siren to secure victory for the Hawks in rapturous scenes. Inaccuracy in front of goal almost cost Rowville, but Steven Georgiou (four goals) was stellar, while Ben Giobbi and Lachlan McDonald were impressive across the ground. For the Bulls, Josh Tour and Tom Glen gave it everything. In Division 2 of the Southern Football League, there were some absolutely massive wins for the local teams. Springvale Districts - who sit atop the ladder with an 8-1 record - held Chelsea Heights goalless in the first half of their clash and continued to pile on the pain after half time. With Matt Wetering (six goals) and Stefan Feehan (five goals) running amok up forward, the Dees cruised to a 122-point win, 21.13 (139) to 2.5 (17)..
