Hop in to see winter arts
In the midst of the bunnies at the Winter Arts Festival launch.
By Danielle Kutchel Bunjil Place was transformed over the weekend as artists from across Casey came together to launch the 17th annual Winter Arts Festival. Looming large over the community space are a series of larger-than-life-size bunnies, part of Amanda Perer's exhibit, called 'Intrude'. The launch also included performances by Casey Choir, Cranbourne Chorale, Australian Tamil Arts Association drumming, Star Search for a Cause and Beauty and the Beast, as well as a Smoking Ceremony by Boon Wurrung man David Tournier. Art exhibitions, musical and dance performances, an Open Studios weekend, workshops and school holiday fun will also take place during the festival. The festival runs throughout June, July and August and the full program is available at www.casey. vic.gov.au/winter-arts-festival.
Back behind bars Three weeks out of jail, a serial offender was back in custody after a large haul of drugs and a loaded rifle were seized by police at his Narre Warren North home. Nigel Conroy, 43, was at home on the oneacre block on Belgrave-Hallam Road when police raided at 6pm on 13 July as part of their investigations into his girlfriend. He was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of GHB (4.8 kilograms), trafficking 57 grams of ice, and possessing a firearm while prohibited. He was also accused of possessing $7980 found in a satchel, pockets and wallet as pro-
ceeds of crime, as well as 19 oxycodone tablets and an electrical bypass. Conroy admitted to police that he bought and sold drugs partly to fund his addiction - of up to one gram of ice a day. He claimed he didn't know who owned the cash-laden satchel or the firearm. At the time, Conroy had just served a 220day jail sentence and was three weeks into a community corrections order. Sentencing judge Susan Pullen of the Victorian County Court said on 4 June that Conroy failed to take up the chance of a rehabilitative CCO. He had instead moved back in with his
drug-addicted girlfriend and relapsed. Judge Pullen had "reservations" about Conroy's remorse given his "disturbing, lengthy and relevant" criminal history. The "extensive" drug-related priors included trafficking, dishonesty, weapons and proceeds-of-crime offences since he was 30. Despite being put on "numerous" rehabilitative orders, Conroy had been unable to overcome his addiction, Judge Pullen said. "I have real concerns about your rehabilitative prospects. 'Guarded' would be arguably a generous description." Police also raided Conroy's partner's Dandenong apartment. She and Conroy, both ad-

dicted to drugs, had been together for a "turbulent" year. She was charged with "very different offences" to Conroy, and jailed for six months with a 12-month community corrections order. Judge Pullen noted Conroy's loving upbringing and his struggles at Berwick High School where he left at Year 9. He was allegedly sexually abused as a child by a relative. His drug history started with cannabis at 11, graduating to cocaine, speed and then ice. Conroy was jailed for up to seven years, ineligible for parole for four-years-and-sixmonths. His term included 326 days of presentence detention.

NEWS
IN BRIEF
A sting in this tale By Danielle Kutchel There's a buzz around Hampton Park, and it's not just the anticipation of the long-awaited upgrade of Hallam Road. Workers investigating an abandoned house near the corner of South Gippsland Highway and Evans Road, which is set to be demolished to upgrade the intersection, discovered two active bee hives - complete with about 6000 busy bees - in the walls of the property. A beekeeper was duly called to safely collect and rehome the family of pollinators. Ben Moore, from Ben's Bees, said it looked like the stripy invertebrates had been inside the weatherboard property for a long time. "Judging by the colour of the wax I'd say at least five or more years, but realistically I'd say 10 because these combs were very black, which says to me that it's very old." Interestingly, it looked like the bees had used their location to their advantage, feasting on leftovers from the nearby tip. "Someone must have thrown out some strawberry syrup or topping in the tip. All of a sudden, the bees have gone 'there's not many flowers around, we need to bring some food in', and they collected the topping and mixed it with their honey," Mr Moore explained. After being dosed with smoke to "chill out" the bees, Mr Moore pulled the weatherboards off the property to expose the hives and put the combs into a Langstroth hive for management. Complicating matters was the presence of asbestos in the roof, close to the hive. Nearly 8kg of honey and honeycomb was also

extracted, with the honeycomb set to be reintroduced to the hive to assist with its growth in the future. Mr Moore said he will ensure the bees are healthy and disease-free before being introduced to a new home in the Yarra Valley, where he expects them to pollinate berries. He said it was one of the most interesting hive removals he had been called to manage, adding to an impressive list of achievements. "The weirdest one I've seen was in a red light at an intersection ... and I've done speakers, and trolleys at shopping centres over the years."
The Hallam Road Upgrade will add a new lane in each direction for 1.2km between Ormond Road and the South Gippsland Highway in Hampton Park. Site preparations are continuing with temporary bans are in place for drivers travelling onto South Gippsland Highway from Hallam Road and for traffic turning onto Hallam Road from South Gippsland Highway. Major works to build the extra lane on Hallam Road will begin in mid-2019 and are expected to be completed in 2020.
Roads on top of Wood’s agenda By Brendan Rees Newly re-elected Federal member for La Trobe Jason Wood has been quick at work, declaring to roll-out his congestion package election promise "as soon as possible." Mr Wood called a meeting with the Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge and Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon on Monday 3 June to discuss a number of projects totalling $77.5 million, which will tackle some of the most congested intersections and roads in Casey and Cardinia.Mr Wood hopes by working with the State Government all projects can be "bundled up" and delivered at the same time. "All we want them to do is work with us, to deliver the funding we have in the budget and get on with it," he said. The projects include Berwick train station upgrade which will create an extra 500 car spaces; the Clyde Road/Kangan Drive upgrade; Clyde Road/Monash Freeway interchange upgrade, and building a brand new Emergency Children's Department at Casey Hospital. The Federal Government also aims to consolidate the State Government's Clyde Road level crossing removal project, and the Berwick station bus interchange project as one. Mr Tudge said he would meet with the Vic-
Man assaulted after leaving bus Police are appealing for the public's help after a man's phone was taken in an alleged robbery in Narre Warren on Tuesday 7 May. It's believed a bandit boarded the route 834 bus from Narre Warren Railway Station about 8.20pm, before following the victim off the bus at Saxonwood Drive a short time later and assaulting him. Police have released CCTV images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries. The man is perceived to be of African appearance and about 183cm tall with a thin build and short black hair. He was wearing dark pants, dark shoes, and a navy "Fila" jumper with red and white strips running down the sleeves. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

"These projects have to obviously fit in with their construction time frames," he said. "We've all got to work together and just lay out a plan ahead to get them done as fast as possible," he said. "Our money is there, it's ready to be deployed, and we just get on with the job."
Mr Wood said medical staff at Casey Hospital and St John of Hospital had approached him, saying the mental stress and anxiety after work was exacerbated when being stuck in traffic on Kangan Drive. "I'm very focused on this. We need this to be done at the same time as the Clyde Road upgrade," he said. "For me this should all be going ahead next year." Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said "it couldn't be a better plan."

A Cranbourne man is smiling this week after scoring a share of $1.3 million in last weekend's TattsLotto division one prize draw. He was part of a 40-person syndicate, nicknamed 'GOLD59'. In addition to winning division one drawn on Saturday 1 June, the group syndicate also won division three 30 times, division four 150 times, division five 49 times and division six 168 times, bolstering the syndicate's total prize to $1,326,316.92. Spring Hill News at Springhill Shopping Centre in Cranbourne was one of 10 outlets to sell a share in the group's syndicate. "It's fantastic; to know that we sold one and made someone richer than they were," an excited owner of Spring Hill News said. He said the man was a regular, attending the outlet once a fortnight. "This is the second time for me. I've been only at this shop for seven months and we had one, the super draw on the 29th of December," he added.

Doveton’s Aboriginal Gathering Place now has free Wi-Fi, thanks to a Smart Connected Bench installed by the City of Casey. The bench is the first in the city, and provides 24/7 access to free Wi-Fi and digital charging stations. “Casey is always looking for innovative ways to connect the community digitally and wants all of the community to have access to these facilities,” said Mayor Amanda Stapledon. “The location for the smart bench was carefully selected to address community challenges and concerns. “The key solution was installing the smart bench adjacent to the Aboriginal Gathering Place, for access to Wi-Fi in an outdoor setting which is accessible 24/7. “From here, Casey will evaluate the success of the bench and look at rolling out additional benches in different locations across the municipality.” The charging stations are expected to be of

Drone law dumped By Andrew Cantwell

Charm with her new prosthetic leg.
Lucky Charm finds welcome new home By Brendan Rees
"They've made the first prototype, and she's now learning how to stand in it and then she'll go on how to walk in it. "She's progressed really nicely," Ms Jeff said. She said an 83-year-old Pakenham man at the Cardinia Retirement Village had initially adopted Charm but realised he wasn't able to look after her in the way that she needed to be. A GoFundMe page, which appealed to the public to make a donation, helped make Charm's operation possible.
Casey Council has voted to axe its short-lived drone local-law.
12419158-SN22-19
A three-legged pup, who was rescued from an abusive owner and taken into the care of a Lyndhurst woman, has found a new home. Debra Jeff of Lyndhurst had been fostering Charm, believed to be a Catahoula/Whippet since January, who had arrived at a shelter underweight and with a missing front leg. Charm underwent an operation at a Vet clinic in Whittlesea about a month ago and received a prosthetic leg.
A nurse, who took Charm under her wing, "actually got to know her really well, and wanted to adopt her," Ms Jeff said. "We had a few misses with her because when they did the operation they had to take the elbow off, and the stitches kept bursting so she had to keep going back and getting restitched, she said. "The third time she went back to be restitched we decided it would be best if she stayed there so they could keep an eye on her daily.
Casey City Council’s well-intentioned but illconceived drone local-law will be dumped from the books. The local-law was brought into effect at the beginning of 2018 - and flew straight into controversy, stepping into CASA regulated space and earning the ire of recreational drone flyers across Melbourne. It had been adopted in an effort to protect people’s privacy from backyard-launched quadcopters equipped with cameras -and to deter deliberate harassment from ex-partners, stalkers and others with a less than noble purpose - be preventing people launching a drone from private property within Casey. A report by council officers in February 2018 indicated the local-law may never be enforcable. By June that year, a meeting had been held with amateur and professional drone groups; and by September the acting CEO had granted sweeping exemptions to anyone affected by the local-law, the council acknowledged the locallaw had failed in its intent and the decision was made to remove the provision from local laws. At Tuesday night’s council meeting, another matter requiring a change to the council’s Community Local Law 2018 allowed them to also quietly drop the drone restrictions. The local-law amendments will now go on public display and any submissions will be considered by the council before the revised local-law can be approved.

OPINION If Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon, councillors and staff, go ahead and spend over $500,000 as planned on ratepayer funded trips to China, the community of Casey will be looking at a future with less jobs growth and efficiency savings, from the growing renewable energy boom than other parts of Victoria. All we need to do is to change our models: instead of placing our faith in China we need to look closer to home and see what's happening in the Latrobe Valley. We will see that the Delburn Wind Farm Latrobe Valley model (with the expanding renewable energy economy) will generate far more power for Casey's residents in future than Beijing. A renewable energy boom is now sweeping across Victoria. Wind farms are operating near Ararat and Hamilton and ratepayers and residents will see the construction of a 300mW wind farm at Hazlewood that will have the capacity to power 220,000 homes. This will create up to 600 jobs while another 1000 jobs will be created with an electric car assembly plant and the production of a renewable energy microgrid. The point being can Casey councilor trips to China, designed to bring Chinese investors here, offer anything like this? No. Chinese Lantern festivals are a seasonal event only. Foreign investors want cheap labour. Renewable energy has more to offer. Casey council should be trying to enter into a renewable energy project partnerships with other local governments to impact energy prices, create fulltime employment growth, and reduce our carbon emissions. This is the only way to secure the future. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills

On Tuesday 4 June, an article was shared on Cranbourne Star News about a family in the Hunt Club Estate in Cranbourne East who say school zoning changes have excluded them from Cranbourne East Secondary School. Here is how our readers responded online: Mell Rose: Have not heard one good thing about the school since it's been build. I drive from Hampton Park to Cranbourne every day for my son to go to school at a decent school. For 4 years before that I drove out to Devon meadows primary every day. Just because closer doesn't mean better Jacinta Parkinson: Quote: Minister for Education James Merlino said: "Every child has the right to enrol at their closest government school." Doesn't every child also have the right to attend the school that best suits him/her? Our zoned school certainly doesn't provide that for my son. Claire Waite: If you live in the bloody estate where the school is your children go to the primary school right next door this is wrong on so many levels why are we always confined to one school why don't we get to have a choice where our children get an education Sam Holloway: We had a similar issue trying to enrol our son in Cranbourne East Primary school. It was deemed out of zone to us, yet our older kids were in zone for the high school next door. We have to actually travel further from home so our youngest can attend primary in Clyde instead. We live in Cranbourne East. It's ridiculous! Jennie Range: It's happening in a lot of places as the zoning for Berwick Sec has moved and people who have recently moved to be in the zone are now actually out of zone. Mich Elle: This has always been the case.. It's not a new thing. Joanne Van Rijn-Portelli: The area is growing need another new high school. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Call restores hope after loss of gift By Brendan Rees
Car goes into home By Brendan Rees Narre Warren SES was called to assist police after a car ploughed into the lounge room of home in Eumemmerring on Monday morning, 3 June. Police have been told a Volkswagen Golf hatch-back, which was stolen from an address in Hawthorn, crashed into the front lounge room of a house on Doveton Avenue about 1.30am. The house occupants, a 47-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, an 18-year-old man and
a 10-year-old boy, escaped injury. The house however, sustained structural damage. The driver of the car left the scene prior to police arrival. The cause of the crash is yet to be determined and the search for the driver continues. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the theft of the vehicle. Narre Warren SES had just arrived at an incident in Narre Warren where a truck carrying a load of timber and plants lost its load on Abeckett Road when they got the call to assist

A Narre Warren grandmother's faith in humanity has been restored after losing a gift she had purchased for her daughter whose home burned down. Pam thought she had lost all hope after leaving behind the gift, being an electric blanket, near a bench outside Coles at Fountain Gate shopping centre on Tuesday morning, 7 May. But to her relief she received a welcome phone call from Fountain Gate centre management offering her a $100 Westfield gift voucher. "I was really pleasantly surprised," the pensioner said. "At first I thought it was to say that someone had handed in the electric blanket." Pam, who asked not to publish her surname, said the electric blanket was intended as a gift for her daughter who "lost everything" after her home burned down following a fire last November. She caught a taxi home with her husband from the centre but said "it didn't event twig that I didn't have the blanket." Pam said she called centre management but had no luck retrieving the item. She said she was "quite surprised" to receive the phone call on Wednesday 29 May. "That was so nice and thoughtful of them; it restores faith in human nature ... so will treat myself to something soon."

Energetic morning tea By Danielle Kutchel The team at Casey North Community Information and Support Service held an energising Biggest Morning Tea recently to raise money for the Cancer Council. Staff, volunteers and special guests gathered with homemade treats for a competition to decide the coveted title of best baker on the day which was taken out by executive officer Susan Magee. As well as the right to brag about their baking prowess, the winner received a small baking kit to get started on next year’s attempt. A raffle also got people into the spirit and helped push up the total amount raised. Two members from Narre Warren police station dropped by to fuel up too, along with Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan. Ms Magee said the turnout was great to see and said the morning tea was something of a tradition for the group. “We’ve been doing the Biggest Morning Tea for close to 20 years. It’s a really good cause to assist raising money for the Cancer Council, and we’re always about supporting other chari-
ties where we can. “It’s a really good opportunity to network and get the community to come together. It’s very informal, social, and it’s a bit of fun!” As Minister for Volunteers, Mr Donnellan said he was pleased to support the group. “These guys do such a marvellous job and contribute enormously to our community, whether it be helping with financial budgeting or whether it be help referring people to services they need. If we didn’t have the volunteers ... people wouldn’t be able to get the dignity they deserve.”

Casey cracks down on underage tobacco sales The testing was conducted by Council's environmental health services contractor, Kernow Environmental Services Pty td. "It is pleasing to report that no sales of cigarettes were made to minors during this blitz, compared to previous years where seven sales were recorded in 2018 and three sales in 2017," Cr Stapledon said. "These are encouraging signs that retailers understand the importance of asking a person for proof of age, before selling cigarettes to someone. "Stopping the sale of cigarettes to minors in

Following a blitz on tobacco retailers, Casey's environmental health officers visited 47 tobacco premises recently and reported no sales of cigarettes made to people under the age of 18. Cost for that extra service Casey residents with a second recycling bin can expect to hear from the council soon as it implements changes to its recycling service. The Council says there are now approximately 20,000 additional free recycling bins at residential properties in the municipality. According to the Council, a recent audit of the bins showed that only 40 per cent of the additional recycling bins are being put out for collection. However, the Council pays for the collection of every bin, even if they are not put out each fortnight. At a meeting on 16 April 2019, the Council decided to introduce a user pays service charge for an additional recycling bin. Additional bins have previously been provided for free. From 1 October 2019, the Council will be introducing a charge of $30 per year for residential properties that have a second recycling bin. Households with a second recycling bin will soon receive a letter from the Council directly asking if: a) You want to keep the bin at a charge of $30 per year b) You want to return the bin c) You do not have a second recycling bin at the property Returned bins will be collected between 19 August and 13 September 2019.

Thanks go to those with vision to help Some of the South East's most dedicated volunteers have been recognised by leading blindness and low vision service provider Vision Australia. Vision Australia Melbourne South East Region, held its annual volunteer recognition ceremony in Berwick this week, acknowledging the numerous volunteers that give up their time each week to support the region's blind and low vision community. The event saw individuals marking one, three and 25 years of volunteering receive service pins acknowledging their milestones. Jean Phibbs was one volunteer who received a 25-year service pin. "We take our vision for granted and I thought about how very lucky I have been, so I decided to become a volunteer because it is a wonderful way to help put back in to society," Ms Phibbs said. "I have assisted Vision Australia clients with their day-to-day tasks such as shopping, accounts, cooking, as well as taking them to the movies, even sorting coloured wools for a client who knits." While she has been formally recognised for more than 25 years of service, Jean's volunteer journey began earlier, having regularly done reading for a law student with low vision. "The courage shown every day by people who are blind or have low vision greatly inspire me to keep volunteering and helping others." Vision Australia regional business manager Janet Lloyd-McNelis said the annual celebration was an important event.

always ready to help and it's important we take the time to say thanks and acknowledge all they make possible." In the past year, Vision Australia has been supported by more than 3000 volunteers across the country, who have contributed more than 1 million hours to supporting people who are blind or have low vision.
Narre Warren South Scout Group will receive $650,000 towards building a new hall. The announcement was made by Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas, with the funding coming from the State Budget which was handed down last week. While the new hall will provide a permanent home for the more than 100 members of the Scout Group, it will also be available for use in other local activities and events. Mr Maas called the new hall a win for the whole community as well as the Scouts. "This permanent location to call home will help them grow, reach out and assist more young locals," he said.

Men's health in focus This Men's Health Week, it's important to address the biggest killer in men: cardiovascular disease. Also known as heart disease, cardiovascular disease is Australia's leading single cause of death, leading to a death in Australia every 28 minutes. Heart disease is often a lifestyle disease and as such includes risk factors around the food you eat, the amount of alcohol you drink as well as how regularly you exercise and whether you smoke. But cardiovascular disease doesn't need to be a death sentence. For many Australians, making simple lifestyle changes can help reduce their risk of disease, such as eating a diet rich in fruits and grains or getting thirty minutes of exercise a day. To encourage awareness of cardiac health and also discuss the warning signs and symp-
toms of heart disease, St John of God Hospital Berwick is hosting a free seminar led by renowned general and interventional cardiologist Dr James Sapontis. Dr Sapontis is a leader in the field of complex coronary intervention and a clinical researcher at MonashHeart as well as a principal investigator in many clinical trials into cardiovascular disease. The event, taking place on the 11th of June at 5.30PM in St John of God's Granada Conference Room, will also include an opportunity for attendees to get a professional answer on any questions they may have regarding cardiac health. If you are interested in attending the free seminar, contact Gillian Coyle on (03)87845029 or email Gillian.Coyle@sjog.org.au.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region
Tech start-up moves fast By Narelle Coulter Berwick software engineer Dr Saiyi Li and his colleagues are using their tech skills to help improve the lives of those with movement disorders. Dr Li is one of the brains behind tech startup Bayes Tech, a tele-rehabilitation platform. Dr Li’s passion and commitment to the project impressed judges who chose Bayes Tech as the winner of the inaugural INNovation Crowd Pitchfest held at Bunjil Place at the end of April. The Bayes Tech team also includes Dr Wei Yin Leong, an electronics engeineering specialist, and Dr Yee Siong Lee, a data scientist. “The idea for Bayes Tech originated from our study,“ explained Dr Li. “During our study, we realised that physiotherapy is important for people with movement disorders, injury and so on. However, some people find it hard to access rehabilitation resources, especially those living in rural areas. So we decided to develop a platform with the hope of helping therapists, patients and everyone who may need it." Bayes Tech has three aims: to save therapists time, make tedious rehab exercises fun and improve communication between therapists and patients. “We take advantage of advanced technology to automatically assess the physical performance of individuals at home similar as that in hospitals and make boring exercises fun, like playing computer games," Dr Li explained. “Therapists can review their patients’ performance and adjust treatment plans anytime, anywhere. More importantly, we try to build a platform that can be easily used by everyone.“ In Australia the number of hospitalisations for rehabilitation care increased from 355,000 in 2013-14 to 455,000 in 2016/17. Dr Li believes Bayes Tech could significantly reduce these numbers. “We have seen so many people with movement disorders in different age groups. My grandfather actually suffered from Parkinson’s Disease and could not do many of the activities of daily living," Dr Li said. “It is so sad to see people sitting in a wheelchair but cannot move their bodies. Physiotherapy is helpful to improve their abilities, but the resources are limited. We believe everyone has the right to enjoy a high quality life. Therefore, we try to use our knowledge and skills to develop a platform to provide help to more individuals with such needs and try to optimise the limited medical resources as much as we can.“
The innovators behind Bayes Tech, Dr Saiyi Li and Dr Yee Siong Lee. The team hope to have the first version of the product launched before the end of the year. INNovation Crowd leaders Chris Hall and Judy Pridmore are helping mentor the trio. “It was great to be part of Pitchfest. Pitchfest opened a window to show our idea to the world so that we can get more attention and help, which contributes enormously to our growth."
Dr Li said one of the most challenging aspects of getting Bayes Tech off the ground was gathering feedback and suggestions from therapists and patients. “ We are looking for collaboration with therapists in physical rehabilitation section to improve our system as fast as we can. “In 12 months, we intend to have our pilot program launched and can then start bring benefit to patients and therapists."
In five years time, Dr Li would like to see the platform used around the world. “We will collaborate with therapists to provide better physical rehabilitation services to patients and also with research centres to develop better assessments and exercises," he said. “The reason we know it will succeed is because we love what we are doing, we work hard to achieve our outcomes and we believe our product can help many people in need.“
Leading the right way pays dividends in development Shelley Flett is an expert in leadership development and team performance, with over a decade of experience in operations and call centres across banking and telecommunications. Shelley is the Author of ‘The Dynamic Leader: Become the leader others are inspired to follow’. This month she writes exclusively for Grow on leadership. For most managers and business owners their first ‘leadership’ experience is often running frontline teams - the staff who have direct contact with your customers and influence the experience, reputation and loyalty to your business. In the early stages of your role as a leader, you’re likely to be ineffective as you try to figure out what to do, often with minimal guidance and support. And you may not consider this is an issue. What’s interesting, according to a Study of Australian Leadership, is that “frontline leadership effectiveness has a positive and significant relationship with employee engagement”. So while you’re trying to figure out how to lead you’re impacting the performance of your
Casey Cardinia Region berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
Author and leadership expert, Shelley Flett. staff and the performance of the business. Despite this reality, training and development for first-time leaders continues to be significantly under invested in. In the absence of training and development you are likely to have a natural preference for either: People and building relationships. You may prioritise people over task and tend to focus on building relationships with your team. Or… Delivering outcomes. You prioritise task over people and tend to focus on getting things
done. You move with purpose and always appear busy. What staff today want is a leader who is inspiring, cares about people and is interested in growth and development. This means, as a leader, you must be intentional in your actions and be aware of what’s going on around you, rather than simply doing what’s automatic. In my book I share the importance of leaders nurturing relationships as well as driving performance. One must not come at the expense of the other. For new leaders in particular, the concept of finding a balance between people and task can become overwhelming. I share three core components for leaders to focus on: investing in relationships; inspiring respect; and influencing results. Invest in Relationships The first priority for a leader is to develop, deepen and nurture relationships with their staff. Be authentic and take a genuine interest in who they are as people, not just employees. Inspire Respect The second priority for a leader is to earn the respect of their staff. This involves seeing other perspectives and acknowledging that there are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ ways of doing
things, just different. When leaders can swap judgement for curiosity and take on different views and opinions, they let go of their tight grip on reality and become open to possibility. Influence Results The third priority is to empower staff to perform at their best. According to the study more than 40% of Australian workplaces “are not meeting their performance targets for return on investment and profitability”. This supports the need for clear objectives, realistic timeframes and a commitment to deliver on their promise. Leader need to hold their staff accountable for their commitments and create the right environment, support and encouragement for them to learn and grow. Development is critical for leaders at any level to ensure their focus isn’t in just one area. Leaders who are balanced in their approach and intentional about what they do will inspire others to follow and will learn to ‘do different’ rather than ‘do more’. ‘The Dynamic Leader: Become the leader others are inspired to follow’ is published by Major Street Publishing and is available for $29.95. Ten years of red and blue By Hayley Wildes The year 2009 was a major step forward for football in the local region, and 10 years on the partnership between the Melbourne Football Club and the City of Casey has never been stronger. Almost 10 years ago to the day, 5 June 2009, the Melbourne Football Club officially announced its 30-year commitment to the City of Casey and the benefits for the local community - on and off the football field have been immense. “It’s been a massive progression - we’re 10 years into a 30-year partnership and probably over the last two years the partnership has escalated quite dramatically,” said general manager of Casey Football, Peter Maynard. “Now at Casey Fields, besides what was just the AFL training and community camps, we’ve
got our AFLW home games played here and they train here, our VFL program, our VFLW program, the Melbourne Football Club Academy is based here, we’re also the major partner for the South East Juniors and we’ve also formed a partnership with the Cranbourne Netball Association, so we’ve got a Casey Demons team in the Victorian Netball League.” As well as having those teams in the local community, the programs and initiatives that continue to be run throughout the City of Casey that have Melbourne Football Club involvement are just as important. “As part of the partnership with the City of Casey, we’re committed to delivering a number of community programs which are many and varied.” Maynard said. Programs such as ‘We Are, We Can, We Will’ - which aims to empower, encourage and
break down barriers to get more women and girls involved in sport and physical activity, as well as a YMCA partnership, multicultural and indigenous programs, training clinics and education programs. The strength of the Casey Demons on-field in the VFL is another example of the success of this partnership. Over the past three years, the Demons have finished the VFL home and away season as minor premiers (2016), fourth (2017) and second (2018). Although ultimate glory hasn’t been achieved, a tough brand of football has been the staple of Casey for years and gives fans plenty to be proud of. When the partnership officially began back in 2009, the Melbourne-aligned VFL team was known as the Casey Scorpions - formerly the Springvale Scorpions - before making the
switch to the Demons prior to the 2017 VFL season. The club is still extremely proud and aware of the Scorpions’ history and this weekend they pay tribute to the Scorpions. “Melbourne’s biggest day of the year is always against Collingwood on the Queen’s Birthday and our VFL team has a heritage round dedicated to Springvale Football Club,” Maynard said of Casey’s clash against Collingwood on Sunday afternoon at Casey Fields. “We still do a lot to retain the heritage and brand of the Springvale Football Club.” There have been some great players roll through the doors at Casey Fields and some highlights that have to be seen to be believed over the past 10 years, but undoubtedly the highlights off-field and in the community have been just as special.
Cavaliers’ mixed weekend of Big V basketball action By Hayley Wildes It was a mixed weekend of Big V basketball action for the Casey Cavaliers. The Championship men suffered a heavy defeat - just their third loss of the season - to Hawthorn. Without Brendon Polk, who is averaging 19 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, the Cavs just couldn't stay with the Magic, falling 104-78. Matt Donlan (17 points) led the scoring for Casey, while Raheem Lemons (15 points and 3 rebounds) battled hard all game. Despite the loss, the Cavs still sit second on the ladder with an 11-3 record. The Championship women entered Round 11 stuck in a major form slump and unfortunately that continued against Whittlesea. On the road, the Cavs were in the game until the closing stages - and led by five points at the final break - but when it mattered most, the Pacers were able to find their offensive groove and came away with a 75-68 win. Toccara Ross (20 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals) did all she could in an effort to drag the Cavs over the line, but it wasn't enough as Casey dropped its sixth game in a row. With a 4-7 record, the Cavs sit seventh on the ladder. The Youth League 1 men had a date with the 36 STAR NEWS

top of the table, and unbeaten, Ballarat Miners at home on Saturday night. The Cavs were impressive on offence and stayed with the Miners the entire way, but ultimately, Ballarat prevailed in an enthralling battle by three points, 92-89. Brendon Head (21 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists) and Blake Taylor (19 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks) were on a mission all game, but it wasn't quite enough. After that hard-fought encounter, the team returned to action on Sunday in Warrandyte and evened their ledger for the weekend. The 70-52 win over the Venom was highlighted by having all 10 players who stepped on the court score - it was a total team effort after a draining game the night before. Corey Ross (13 points and 4 rebounds) top-scored for Casey and the Cavs now sit third on the ladder with a 10-5 record. The Youth League 1 women continued their competition-best form with yet another win; their eighth on the trot. Taking on Corio Bay at home on Saturday night, Casey was sublime in the first half to set up the 72-58 win. Again, it was the Cavs' defence that got them going as they forced the Stingrays into 22 turnovers, which resulted in 21 points for Casey.
Tess Young starred in Casey's comprehensive win over Corio Bay. 192343 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Tess Young (17 points and 13 rebounds) did it all for the Cavs as they brushed aside the bottom team with ease. Casey boasts an impressive 11-2 record to sit on top of the ladder. All Big V divisions take a break this week, but the following weekend will be a massive one for all teams.
On June 15, a Championship women and men double-header tips off from 6pm at Casey Stadium, while the Youth League 1 men travel to Camberwell earlier that day. On 16 June, the Championship men hit the road to take on Corio Bay and the Youth League 1 women head to Camberwell. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Prasad is setting the pace By Nick Creely National race-walking champion Pramesh Prasad continues to break records at an alarming rate, and nothing seems to be slowing him down. The 44-year-old Narre Warren local and Casey Fields Masters athlete is a real story of persistence since moving from Fiji to Melbourne in the early 1990's, carving out an incredible race-walking career that has seen him already claim three national titles, a bounty of records and gold medals in Australian, Victorian and International Masters tournaments. In 2018 alone, he broke four national records for Fiji - including ending a 21-year 5000 metre record - and holds more records than any male athlete in his home country, an incredible feat. This year, Prasad has steadily built on his success, challenging himself in many gruelling events, and is setting his sights on a national record in a six-hour event in Coburg in the near future after breaking Fiji's national record for 10 kilometres in 49:27, and two weeks prior breaking a 15 kilometre record for the Victorian Masters. "In the last six months, I did my first 50 kilometre event, which was at the Victorian Championships, so I won the state championships, and by winning that, I was ranked number one in Australia in Open Division, so that's been a big challenge for me," he said. "And I did a six-hour event in Coburg and came first with 56.3 kilometres, which unfortunately is 500 metres from the national record, but hopefully I can get that in years to come. "I also went through the local Victorian Track and Field summer season and did well." But this year is the big one, the Oceania Athletics Association Championships in lateJune, in which Prasad will represent Fiji in the 10,000 metre race-walk.
Local athlete Pramesh Prasad is enjoying a stellar race-walking career. In what is one of the biggest athletics championships of the year - with over 500 athletes competing from around Oceania in a four-day event - Prasad is certainly excited for the challenge. "I will be competing with some great ath-
letes, so it'll be tough, but I'm going there to get the experience and get a time," he said. "We don't really race in winter times so it'll be good to get a good time. "I'm looking forward to it." Away from the competitive field, Pramesh

Casey's horrible start to the 2019 VFL season continued on Saturday in Werribee. The Demons were slow out of the blocks against Werribee and at quarter-time found themselves down by 13 points, 4.3 (27) to 2.2 (14). Werribee continued to work hard in the second quarter and the side's pressure was too much for Casey as they outscored the Demons three goals to one to take a 24-point lead into the main break. Despite the score line, the work of returning Melbourne player Steven May (13 first half disposals) was a highlight. He was clunking key marks and using his sublime foot skills to great effect out of the backline. While the half-time score wasn't insurmountable, Werribee scored the first two goals of the third quarter to ensure it kept the scoreboard pressure squarely on Casey. With a quarter to play, the Demons were 30 points adrift, 9.8 (62) to 4.8 (32). The Demons finally managed to get some goals on the board in the final quarter, but Werribee continued on its merry way up forward as well to ensure the result was never in doubt. Werribee ran out 35-point winners, 13.10 (88) to 7.11 (53). The game was won around the contest as ex-AFL star Michael Barlow (33 disposals) and Josh Clayton (32 disposals) dominated proceedings through the middle for Werribee. May (22 disposals) was the standout for Casey and looks set for a return to AFL action, while Corey Wagner (25 disposals and 10 tackles) was a constant source of effort. While the result wasn't what Casey fans had hoped for, there were positives to come out of the loss - namely in the form of three locals making their 2019 Casey VFL debuts; Cranbourne's Anthony Vella, former Gippsland Power player and number three pick in last week's AFL mid-season draft Kyle Dunkley, and Cora Lynn's Heath Briggs. Vella looked at home in the red and blue with his impressive kicking and willingness to take the game on, while Briggs and Dunkley

Gallant defeat for Bloods By Nick Creely
Despite not walking away with the four points, Olinda Ferny Creek battled hard to push Beaconsfield to the brink. 194080
Gun Beaconsfield youngster Jamie Plumridge impacts this contest. 194080 Pictures: ROB CAREW "But (last year) we couldn't even beat a side above us, and we've had no success in the last 10 years, and all of a sudden we're premiership favourites - these blokes just don't know how to win. "We've got to learn how to win consistently, and win in different ways - granted, with all the media stuff, the blokes probably assumed it was going to just happen. "Playing finals last year, and coming into a new competition this year, and not understanding what winning was about is never going to be a good combination." On Saturday, the Kangaroos took another step forward in what was their most consistent performance of the year, shaking off the Rovers, who stuck with the home side for the best part of the three quarters. The visitors looked like they could inflict the Kangaroos with an upset during stages of the third term after starting the second-half well, but some maturity shown by their leaders ensured they could find enough energy and momentum to wrestle back the lead with a quarter to play. In particular, young gun Tyler Clark enjoyed a stellar quarter, kicking the ball with precision and running hard to stamp his authority on the contest. It was a plain and simple message at the huddle as Koop prepared to address his side for the last time, "We've done all the hard work, and we now need to finish it off."
Officer skipper Matthew Clarke stretches to take this grab on Saturday. 194082
And finish it off they did, halting the Rovers who surged early with some brilliant defensive acts from Stephen Heppel and James Waldon, and some class coming through the middle from Tyler Clark, veteran Ben Tivendale and lion-hearted ruckman Sean Roach - who floated around the ground to have a big say on proceedings before the forward line went to work and secured the victory. Koop said the win added plenty of confidence in the short-term, and reiterated that it was another great learning curve as they continue to build. "It was definitely a stumbling block early (this year), but we've worked through a few issues, and we like to think we take a good victory on the weekend, but some good pointers," he said. "We were 14 points up at three quarter time, and the message was that good sides simply win these games on their home deck, and we should have won by more but we kicked poorly. "But we're still learning, and that gives us a lot of confidence over the next month hopefully." With a Queens Birthday split round meaning that the Kangaroos won't take to the field until 15 June against Emerald, Koop said it was an important time to work hard at training in the processes that will ensure success. "We only get them for a limited time (at training throughout the week), and there's not enough time to do the work you need to do," he said.

"I'm not a massive fan of a lot of meetings, I think they can be overrated, but we need to understand there's a process, and if you follow that, success and good habits can come from it." Doveton, meanwhile, returned to some of its best form with a grinding win against Emerald in Division 1 under lights at home, 15.14 (104) to 11.11 (77). For the best part of three quarters, the Doves returned to its electric form, dominating proceedings but not quite putting the game to bed with a 5.8 to 3.4 first half. With recruit James Gascard up and about in his best game for the Doves with four goals, the home side played arguably its best quarter of the season, kicking seven third quarter goals to open up a massive 40-point gap to seal the game despite the Bombers running out the game strongly. Gascard, along with Jake Basa and Matthew Boyd, had a massive say on proceedings, with Boyd in particular continuing on his regular dose of leather poisoning, while for the Bombers, Jake Pedder slotted another four while Josh Rich continued his impressive vein of form. In other games, Pakenham had to work relatively hard to shake off Belgrave on the road, despite having an extraordinary amount of scoring shots, 17.21 (123) to 14.6 (90), while Monbulk continued its impressive charge with another solid win, this time against Warburton Millgrove on the road, 14.18 (102) to 5.5 (35). 12420026-CG24-19
OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW ROUND 6 Olinda Ferny Creek may not have claimed the four-points, but showed the first signs of turning the corner in 2019, pushing Beaconsfield to the brink on the road on Saturday. Coming into the clash between two the sides - who both have had some struggles so far in the Outer East Premier Division - the Eagles were expected to take care of business and continue building on its percentage. In the past three weeks, the Eagles had scored 127, 48 and 133, and looked frightening with their unpredictability through the forward line and stinginess in the back half. But the Bloods fought, and fought, and fought. In the early stages, the visitors certainly looked like they had done their homework, shutting off the usually venomous Beaconsfield run to take in a narrow five-point lead into quarter time courtesy of the opening two majors to the impressive Lachlan Taylor. Despite not wavering in intensity, eventually Leigh McQuillen's side began to assert themselves, coming back from a 12-point deficit early in the third to reclaiming the lead after slamming on four-quick goals to open up a 17-point advantage. Eventually, the class and fitness on the vast surrounds proved a stumbling block, with best afield Sean Dwyer putting the game to bed with a major early in the last. Adding a bit of a gap at the final siren, the Eagles put the foot down to add another couple of goals by the final siren, while the Bloods could just add a single point to their three quarter time tally. Down at Casey Fields, Berwick just did what they needed to do to claim the four-points against arch-rivals, Cranbourne, 9.15 (69) to 5.11 (41). The Eagles managed to take in a onepoint lead at half-time, but Rhys Nisbet's side stamped its authority in the third like class sides do. Completely shutting the home side down, the Wickers slammed on five unanswered goals to turn their sluggish first half around, with Tim Gunn (three goals) particularly dangerous in attack in a reminder of his ability to quickly turn a game. The Wickers ran out 28-point winners in a slow last quarter, with Luke Jellyman-Turner, James Magner and Dylan Morris all important, while Bailey Buntine showed some more exciting signs with a great showing for the home team. In the remaining matches across Premier, Wandin and Upwey Tecoma combined for 41 goals down at the Kennel, with the Dogs prevailing 26.21 (177) to 15.11 (101). The returning Daniel Gorringe and Justin Van Unen each snared six majors for the home side. Woori Yallock also banked some percentage with a comfortable win against Healesville, 18.11 (119) to 7.5 (47). In Division 1, Officer is now well and truly back in town after securing its third straight victory, this time against a gallant Mount Evelyn at Starling Road on Saturday, 12.12 (84) to 7.13 (55). It's a win that now lifts them comfortably into fourth spot with a 3-3 record, but for Kangaroos coach Doug Koop - while pleased that the result went his side's way - said that the 'unfair' pre-season expectation of his team as premiership favourites was a stark contrast to exactly where his group is at. "It was our best four quarter effort of the year, so it's a good time now to be playing good footy," he said.

The Seagulls are soaring By Hayley Wildes
Kris Sabbatucci played a a pivotal role in Tooradin-Dalmore's win over Bunyip. 194085 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS DIVISION 3 - ROUND 8 Hampton Park's dominant season continued against Black Rock. The Redbacks, who are undefeated, jumped out to a 37-point lead at the first break and never looked back as Nathan Carver and Aaron Thornton (five goals each) feasted up forward. Hampton Park ran out 96-point winners, 20.17 (137) to 6.5 (41).
DIVISION 4 - ROUND 8 Lyndhurst suffered its first loss of the season, falling to South Yarra. The Lightning were in control early and led by 13 points at the final break, but South Yarra came roaring home with five goals to one in the fourth quarter to clinch a 10.8 (68) to 9.4 (58) win. Cory Willshire and Jakson Post were best for the Lightning.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 8 Pearcedale's horror 2019 season continued on the weekend, ripped a part by Tyabb - a team that owned just a 1-7 record prior to Round 8. The Yabbies slammed on seven goals to one in the opening term and the pairing of Matthew Ravenall (seven goals) and Michael Altenkirch (five goals) was too much. With just four goals for the day, Pearcedale lost 20.9 (129) to 4.13 (37). Despite the result, Jordan Leinmueller and Max Gearon battled hard for Pearcedale. Devon Meadows lost to Seaford, but it was a loss that was a step forward for the Panthers. Taking on the Tigers, who were 5-2 before Round 8, the Panthers, who had just two wins to their name, were in the contest all day. Simon Hallsworth and Brodie White dominated for Devon Meadows as they fought tooth and nail for the win, but eventually Seaford did enough to claim a 9.8 (62) to 8.5 (53) win. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL DIVISION 2 - ROUND 8 The Doveton Eagles bounced back in style from two consecutive losses to defeat Heatherton. In a scoring masterclass, the Eagles slammed on 28 goals - led by Jye Sigersma (six goals), Adam Read (five goals) and Nicholas Battle (four goals) - to run out 125-point winners, 28.18 (186) to 9.7 (61). Keysborough was far too good for Caulfield and remain undefeated with six wins on the board. The Burras' forwards were a class above the Caulfield backline as the likes of Tim Werner (six goals), Geoffrey Humphreys and Matthew Carnelley (four goals each) ran riot inside the forward 50 as Keysborough recorded a 100-point win, 21.10 (136) to 5.6 (36).
In an arm-wrestle all day, Hallam fell agonisingly short of Carrum Patterson Lakes. The Hawks led by one goal at half time, and with scores level at the final break, it was on for young and old. Unfortunately for Hallam, they couldn't get the job done down the stretch, falling 10.9 (69) to 9.9 (63). Brendan Reynolds and Joel Danilo were best for Hallam. Lyndale trailed by 45 points at the main break against Moorabbin and were unable to get close to the Kangaroos in the second half. Trent Isbister and Anthony Koutsoubos did all they could, but the Pumas were completely outplayed, losing 14.12 (96) to 5.8 (38). VFLW ROUND 4 The Casey Demons suffered their first loss of the season, falling to the Southern Saints at Casey Fields. Trailing by three points at the final break, the Demons wasted opportunities in the fourth quarter by scoring five behinds and the Saints took theirs as Tara Bohanna booted two goals to lead Southern to a 3.5 (23) to 1.6 (12) win. Chantel Emonson (one goal) and Sarah Lampard were impressive for the Demons. WEST GIPPSLAND FOOTBALL ROUND 8 Tooradin-Dalmore continued its strong form in the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition, this week taking care of Bunyip in a hard-fought win. It was a gripping contest as neither team gave an inch and stars' from both teams stood up. In the end, despite inaccurate kicking in the final term, the Seagulls got home by 13 points, 8.15 (63) to 7.8 (50). Julian Suarez and Kris Sabbatucci (two goals each) were massive all day for TooradinDalmore as the Seagulls recorded their seventh win in nine games.
