MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I had the pleasure of catching up with Geoff Lang of Transport Field Service in Warwick and his good mate Phil Ingram ahead of this year's Great Endeavour Rally for our cover story this week (see pages 4&5). This wonderful event has been raising money for people with disabilities for many years and I must admit that it's on my own personal bucket list. The Rally enables participants to see parts of Australia they've never visited before and enjoy some camaraderie and outback fun along the way. Transport Field Service has been supporting the Rally for several years now in a vehicle breakdown and towing capacity and I think it's well worthwhile highlighting their contribution. The capacity of their truck to get Rally participants out of tricky situations is impressive, as is the use of the latest technology to track vehicles over vast outback distances to ensure the safety of the driving teams. Well done to Geoff and Phil for giving up their time for this very worthy event and I wish them safe travels - and will look forward to catching up with them again on their return. Jeremy Sollars

NEW BUDGET HAS ‘LOW RATE RISE’ The Southern Downs Regional Council adopted its 2019-2020 Annual Budget on Monday of this week, saying it has delivered "the lowest general rate rise in more than a decade". The council said in a statement that general rates will increase by "just two per cent, the lowest rise since 2008, and SDRC will extend the early payment discount period from 30 to 60 days to assist residents impacted by ongoing drought conditions". "Utility charges for water, sewer and waste will rise by only 2.75 per cent, the same increase as the 2018-2019 financial year," the statement said. "The 2019-20 budget forecasts an operating surplus of $95,000 and will further reduce Council's debt by $1.3 million." Mayor Tracy Dobie said the 2019-20 budget "looks towards the region's future and will build upon Council's strong financial foundation to help the region grow and prosper". "This council's sound financial management and careful planning over the course of its term means we are able to deliver our community the lowest rate rise in more than 10 years," Cr Dobie said. "A $35.8 million capital works program will maintain and upgrade the region's ageing infrastructure, investing in our communities for the long-term. "The budget strikes a balance between

working towards long-term financial stability and delivering the key services and projects the region needs to continue to grow, prosper and reach its full potential. "Council will also continue to support many community initiatives, including our vibrant arts and events scene, providing funding through our Community Grants Program. "Council's improving financial position has also led to council successfully securing millions in grants and funding that will allow council to deliver key projects. "Council uses these grants and government funding towards projects that enhance the liveability of the region, which encourages more people and businesses to relocate here and invest in the Southern Downs. "I would like to thank the community for their positive feedback and contributing to this important budget that will help shape our region into the future. "Council developed the budget after consulting with Southern Downs residents at six information sessions across the region and calling for feedback which led to 43 submissions from the community. "SDRC has incorporated the community's feedback into the 2019-20 Budget which delivers strong financial management and responsible planning while still offering important services and projects for a fourth straight year." ●

FREE TIMES RECOGNISED AT COUNTRY PRESS AWARDS The Southern Free Times tasted success at the 2019 Queensland Country Press Association awards ceremony last Friday 31 May. Editor Jeremy Sollars won the 'Overall Journalistic Excellence Award for an Individual Journalist' for the second year running, and also took out third place for 'Best Sports Picture' with a shot from the 2018 Warwick Rodeo entitled 'Cowboy Down'. We also took out equal third place in the advertising category for 'Best Run of Press Newspaper Supplement' for our Rose City Shoppingworld opening advertising feature from April 2018. The judge's notes for Jeremy's award read as follows "The work of Jeremy Sollars showed a high degree of empathy with his readers and his ability to deliver stories that were relevant to them. The stories covered drought and water; de-amalgamation of Warwick and Stanthorpe councils, Warwick solar farm, and a community project for refugees. The drought stories displayed a wide number of sources and context, showed the impact on economic viability of the region, impact on community and business and on the mental health of community members. The stories highlighted innovative ways to deal with drought, suggested solutions, and provided farmers' views in personal stories. The stories were covered in depth in a way that demonstrated a commitment to the community."

Editor Jeremy Sollars took out the 'Overall Journalistic Excellence Award for an Individual Journalist’ for the second year running at the 2019 QCPA awards. Our thanks as always to our valued readers and advertisers for supporting the Southern Downs and Granite Belt's leading FREE community newspaper - and don't forget we're now in our new office located at 94 Palmerin Street in Warwick - same phone number 4661 9800 and opening hours 8.30am to 5pm. VIEWS SOUGHT ON WATER WITH NEW SURVEY LAUNCHED The Southern Downs community is invited to have their say on the region's water security with the launch of a new survey. As part of the Southern Downs Water Security Strategy, Southern Downs Regional Council is seeking feedback on the community's values in regards to water, as well as residents' knowledge of the region's local water resources. In a statement released last week the council said the survey will "gather local data on the actions and behaviours which are most important to residents as well as seek feedback on opportunities to further secure the Southern Downs' water supplies for the future". "Focusing on three key issues, the survey

will help Council understand the impacts of water restrictions on residents, how community members use water and their understanding of local water resources," the statement said. "The launch of the survey comes as Council undertakes a number of projects to secure water resources and finalise contingency planning in response to prolonged drought conditions severely impacting the region. "Council is evaluating all possible alternative water supplies, including undertaking investigations into the region's existing bore network, as well as securing water allocations from dams located outside the Southern Downs.

"Surveys of both Connolly and Storm King Dam are currently being undertaken to determine siltation levels. "Council is doing everything reasonably possible to manage our region's current water resources, and finalise a contingency plan in the event we can no longer draw a water supply from any of the region's dams." Councillor for Transport, Infrastructure and Utilities Marika McNichol said she urged all members of the community to take part in the survey to help Council collect vital information. "We're asking important questions around water restrictions, what our community values in terms of its water usage and other key questions that will inform Council's long-term planning for

water security and infrastructure," Cr McNichol said. The survey takes 10 to 15 minutes and can be completed online. Some questions are a quick 'tick and flick' and others require a more thoughtful response. The survey is open to every resident across the Southern Downs and is available to be completed until Sunday 16 June 2019. A hard copy is also available to be downloaded from the Council website, completed and returned to any of Council's Community Contact Centres. COVER STORY

RALLYING BEHIND A GREAT CAUSE Geoff Lang and Phil Ingram will follow the Great Endeavour Rally across north Queensland in July. BY JEREMY SOLLARS

G

eoff Lang of Transport Field Service in Warwick and his good mate Phil Ingram are preparing for a road trip to match all road trips - the 2019 Great Endeavour Rally. The pair will act as the emergency backup support and vehicle recovery team for this year's event which hits the road on July 26, departing from Bundaberg the Bundy Rum Distillery to be precise - and covering some 4000 kilometres of north-west Queensland, due to arrive in Townsville on August 3. Geoff 's association with the rally began way back in 1989 when he did his first trek in an Mercedes diesel sedan and four years ago was invited to be a 'support sponsor',

donating his time and UD MK tilt-tray truck. Phil Ingram currently works at Top Two motorcycles in Warwick and previously worked with Geoff at West-Star Motors and happily signed up to be Geoff 's offsider in 2019, with Geoff ''s better half Bron accompanying him last year. It's Geoff and Phil's shared love of "everything cars" that is their mutual bond and as important as the Great Endeavour Rally is from a fundraising perspective, it's also a chance to see parts of Australia they haven't seen before, preferring the dirt to the black-top. Their job will be to help any of the dozens of vehicles participating if they run into trouble, with most of the rally crews made up of family members and friends

who in many cases don't have a lot of mechanical knowledge. The most common scenarios are simple breakdowns - and flat tyres are commonplace - but the UD MK truck has the ability to pull a vehicle out of a sticky situation such as getting bogged, which could be a real possibility 'up north' where there has actually been some rain in recent times. "Every year we get to go somewhere we haven't been before and that's a big part of the attraction," Geoff told the Free Times. "It's not your normal road trip. "When we're out following the rally we can go for a whole day without receiving a call-out for help, then the next day we might get three calls. "We have all the tech in the world to look

after us in the truck - the GPS system allows us to track every vehicle in the rally at the press of a button on a tablet where there's no mobile network. "Phil and I have been in the car game for around 40 years and in the event of a complex recovery it's better to have two qualified people on hand. "A lot the rally participants are 'mum and dad' teams who are doing it because it's for a good cause but don't necessarily have a lot of mechanical expertise. "It's always best if we can get them going on the side of the road." Geoff and Phil will share the driving 50-50 and have been doing a lot of "preventative maintenance" on the truck, including stocking it with the necessary spare parts in the event of a mishap.

They and the rally participants will spend overnight on the 11-day trek at a variety of camps, set up in advance by rally organisers. Army support crews also follow the rally and in at least one past instance had to pull Geoff 's own truck out of trouble when it became bogged at Finke River Mission, some 400km from Alice Springs. "Obviously the road conditions are pretty tough most of the way and suspensions can fall apart," Geoff said. "The rally is always held in the drier part of the year but having said that there has been some rain up north which could make things interesting. "I think it's also important to acknowledge the fact that we're not the only volunteers - there's the people who operate the vehicle checkpoints who are giving up their time as well. "And they also help to raise funds along with the rally entrants. "Endeavour also selects a number of clients with special needs every year to join the rally and it becomes a really special experience for them as well. "There's a real sense of camaraderie and everyone who's ever done the rally including myself - makes lifelong friends." ABOUT THE TRUCK ... · The truck Geoff and Phil will be travelling in is a 1995 UD MK with no less than 800,000 clicks on the clock. · It has a carrying capacity of up to four tonnes and has a fuel range of around 2500km with dual diesel tanks. ●

The Southern Downs Regional Council says it has removed the damaged roof of the Allora Reservoir, which the Free Times was recently told has collapsed. A council spokesman said the reservoir "is currently offline". "Council has conducted a condition assessment on the reservoir as well as work to repair any damage," the spokesman said. "SDRC has allocated funds in next

year's budget to replace the roof, and Council will return the reservoir to full service once it has replaced the roof. "Allora's urban water supply is sourced from Leslie Dam, so the reservoir being offline has not impacted the supply of water to Allora residents." Council budget documents released this week show $280,000 has been allocated for replacement of the roof.

The Southern Downs Regional Council says the region's much-loved canine residents will be wagging their tails with joy with new and improved off-leash dog parks planned for Warwick and Stanthorpe. In a statement released late last week the council said a new off-leash dog park will be built at Queen's Park in Warwick, while upgrade works are planned for the existing Connor Street dog park in Stanthorpe. The council has said the exact location of the Queen's Park off-leash area has not been determined but is likely to be "between the Rugby Union and Rugby League fields". "Funded by Southern Downs Regional Council, the new areas will be fenced and are expected to be completed by the end of June," the statement said. "Community members and the region's dog owners expressed a desire for off-leash facilities during public consultation on Council's 2019-2020 Draft Budget." Councillor for Events, Sport, Parks and Recreation Yve Stocks said the new dog parks will help promote socialisation and exercise activities for dogs and their owners. "Dogs aren't just pets, they are members of our families and we all know pet ownership improves physical and mental health," Cr Stocks said. "Off-leash dog parks encourage residents to get outdoors, be active and enjoy the region's beautiful open spaces. "These will be wonderful, pet-friendly spaces where dogs can play and exercise in a safe, fenced area with picnic tables and park benches as well as rubbish bins and doggie doo bags. "Creating a space for our region's pooches is all about enhancing the liveability or our region and recreational

Room to roam for your favourite mate. spaces, but it also helps to manage the impacts on other parks users and any nearby residents. "Owners wishing to use the new dog parks should ensure their pets are registered with Council, vaccinated and not on heat and owners should clean up after their friends and use the doggie doo bags provided." ●

MUSEUM A KEY ALLORA ATTRACTION BY JEREMY SOLLARS

A new time capsule will be buried as part of the Allora 150 year celebrations.

Perry Cronin with just a small part of the museum's collection. and community members to contribute material, in particular DVD's, photos and videos featuring younger members of the community. Another highlight of the 'Come Home To Allora' 150 year celebrations will be the naming of Allora's first 'Sporting Immortal' at 1pm on Saturday 20 July at the Commercial Hotel. Around 50 nominations for the honour have already been put forward and a panel

of three independent judges from outside the Allora area will decide the winner. The Allora Sports Museum will be open on both Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July between 9am and 3pm, with a gold coin entry for adults and children free. The Museum is also open every Sunday from12.30pm to 4pm or by appointment. Enquiries to Perry Cronin on 0407 034 320.

The Allora Sports Museum will be one of the main focal points of the upcoming Allora 150th anniversary celebrations in July. The weekend of Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July will feature a packed program of events in the 'Best Little Town on the Downs' as it commemorates 150 years of local government. The Allora Sports Museum was established just over two decades ago in the former shire chambers on Herbert Street and in its own words "exhibits, preserves, promotes & recognizes sporting achievers, achievements and memorabilia relating to the Allora region". A time capsule buried outside the Museum in 1969 was dug up in late April of this year - 50 years early and with the kind cooperation of the Southern Downs Regional Council - and the variety of items inside recovered. These will be placed on display inside the Museum after being cleaned up by experts at the Queensland Museum in Brisbane, with some of the items affected by moisture. The material includes audio tapes with unknown recordings and it is hoped the Queensland Museum can convert these to digital. A new time capsule will be buried in the same spot at 9.45am on Saturday 21 July and curator Perry Cronin is encouraging all Allora organisations

NEW AUSSIES MAKE IT ‘OFFICIAL’ BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Southern Downs Regional Council welcomed four new Australians who completed their citizenship ceremonies at the Warwick Town Hall on Thursday 23 May. Mayor Tracy Dobie officiated at the ceremony which was attended by the proud loved ones of the new citizens. Below are the background notes read out at the ceremony by Cr Dobie about our latest naturalised Aussies - Nelly Flanagan, Juliet Heywood, Eugene Murphy and Thi Tuyet Doan. Warwick State High School students and participants in the Clontarf Foundation - which supports the education and life skills of young Aboriginal and Torres Street Islander men - assisted with the ceremony by handing the new citizens native plants for their gardens, a regular gift at local citizenship ceremonies. Congratulations to our 'newest' Aussies from the Free Times!

NELLY FLANAGAN ... "Nelly has been in Australia almost 10 years, after moving here with her Australian husband after his work contract finished in Papua New Guinea. Nelly and her husband moved to Warwick from Dirranbandi last year, and she says they really love living here, as everything is so close and it's not far to Brisbane to see relatives. Nelly is proud and feels privileged to live in a country where such good care is taken of you."

Our ''latest Aussies'' were welcomed at the Warwick Town Hall last month.

Nelly Flanagan.

Juliet Heywood.

Eugene Murphy.

Thi Tuyet Doan.

JULIET HEYWOOD ...

EUGENE MURPHY ...

"Juliet loves Australia and its people because life here is based on the Christian faith. Juliet said she loves being a part of this beautiful country, because we are all Australian and it's a multicultural country. Juliet said Warwick was the best place to live with her family, as there is a lot of opportunity and many Filipinos already settled here."

"Eugene is delighted to be finally become an Australian Citizen, because of the opportunities this country has given him over the last 10 years of living here. Eugene says he has been welcomed here and really made to feel as if he belongs here. Eugene really loves living on the Southern Downs, and said the people are so warm and welcoming and it has the same warm,

country feel that he was used to living in Ireland."

THI TUYET DOAN ... "After arriving in Australia nearly 9 years ago from Vietnam with her husband, Thi has found her place on the Southern Downs. She really loves living in Stanthorpe as it is very peaceful and says the people there are gentle and friendly." ●

Tenterfield Shire Council received a major award for improvements in staff culture at a prestigious breakfast function in Sydney last month. The council received the award for the Macquarie University Voice Project 2019 Change Challenge (Small/Medium Business Category). In a statement Mayor Peter Petty said council staff earned the award "through the huge turnaround in culture and engagement across the spectrum of Council's operations as measured through staff surveys and a range of other engagement initiatives". "Chief Executive Terry Dodds, accompanied by staff members Peter Townes, Jenni Pentland, Kelly Pitkin and Gary Chorley were present to receive the Award with Human Resources Manager Barry Frew also in attendance," Cr Petty said. "On the same day, Fleet Manager Brad Foan was in Melbourne at a Graduation Ceremony recognizing his completion of a Diploma in Leadership and Management from Swinburne University and the Australasian Fleet Management Association (AfMA). "This ends a seven month journey of

part-time study for Brad, the majority of which was undertaken in his own time. "As a mark of his achievement, Brad was requested to address over 400 of his peers at the AfMA Conference on his study journey, which he did with professionalism and confidence." Cr Petty said he "expressed his pride with the level of professionalism and dedication being exhibited by Council staff ". "This culture has permeated right through the organization," he said. "I congratulate Chief Executive Terry Dodds on his visionary approach to engage our staff which ultimately has a flow on effect right through the community. "As Mayor, I am often in the Administration Office and have a lot of contact with ratepayers and residents right across the community. "I have seen an attitude change and staff consciously embracing the Council values of 'ICARE' - being Integrity, Community Focus, Accountability, Respect and Excellence. "I congratulate each and every one of our staff members for stepping up to the mark and taking responsibility for their role in some part of Council's operations." ● freetimes.com.au

HORSE HERITAGE ICONS TO BE OURS BY JEREMY SOLLARS A new sculpture celebrating Warwick's horse heritage in Queens Park right next to the highway and alongside Alice Street will be officially handed over to the community on Saturday 22 June. As reported in the Free Times in March the steel sculpture depicting the whole range of equine themes was the brainchild of the late John Simpson, a former manual arts teacher at The Scots PGC College. John raised around $190,000 to fund the project, the majority of it coming from private individuals and local businesses, with his dream being to catch the eye of the visitor driving into Warwick along its northern gateway. Working closely on the project with John over many years has been Warwick-based nutritional biochemist Henry Osiecki, who along with John's family has been committed to seeing his good friend's legacy come to fruition. The icons which will form the sculpture have been made at Peel Tribe's Condamine Fabrications and depict horse themes including Cobb and Co's wagons, heavy horses, polocrosse, campdrafting, thoroughbred racing, rodeo, dressage, pony club, show jumping and the World War One Light Horse. John's daughter Fiona Simpson told the Free Times the Handing Over Ceremony will commence at 11am on the 22nd and will include free entertainment, with the

"Lions and Rotary Sunrise will be cooking up a free barbecue, there will be horses representing some of the icons racehorse, eventing and showjumping, 11th Light Horse troop, Clydesdales dressed for work - along with The Scots PGC College Pipe Band and a local Indigenous Choir,"

Fiona said. "And an event like this wouldn't be right without a call to order from the Southern Downs Town Crier Bob Townshend. "The event will kick off at 11am, with official business starting at 11.30, hosted by the Warwick Chamber of Commerce president Julia Keogh alongside Mayor

The late John Simpson. Tracy Dobie, council CEO David Keenan and councillors." John Simpson passed away earlier this year while the icons were being worked on by Peel Tribe, leaving behind his wife Mavis and their three adult children Tanya, Fiona and Matthew. ●

INGLEWOOD GET TOGETHER BY MAVIS STOWER The unexpected meeting of two men who had not seen one another for 65 years was the highlight of this year's Inglewood Reunion for families and friends held at the Ravens Reserve Chermside in Brisbane recently. The two men were Nick Lacovella and Enio Piccini who related their story to the gathering on the day. Nick said he arrived in Australia from Italy in 1954, a young man, alone and with very little knowledge of the English language. He travelled by train from Sydney to Brisbane planning to go on to Inglewood to join his father who was working for a district land owner, the late Augie Agostinelli. A mix-up with trains left him stranded in Brisbane. When Augie Agostinelli heard of his plight he organised for Enio Piccini to go and pick him up and bring him to Inglewood. Enio said at that time he owned an old Vanguard utility and made the trip from Inglewood to Brisbane and back to Inglewood all in one day. This was a feat unheard of in those days because unsealed roads were the norm and the section between Karara and Omanama was known as the "horror stretch", involving

Nick Lacovella and Enio Piccini.

miles of a road surface covered with deep corrugations. Enio said it was a hairraising trip and he dropped Nick off at the Agostinelli farm late that night. They both then went their separate ways without seeing one another again.

Nick now lives in Brisbane and said he decided to attend the Inglewood reunion after hearing about it from a friend. They both agreed that their meeting after all the years was unexpected, amazing and emotional.

Special guests on the day were Sister Margaret and Sister Ann, both of the Order of St Joseph and both teachers at Inglewood's St Maria Goretti School during the 1950's. Not only had they taught - as children - many of those attending the reunion, but their taxi driver had recognised who they were, identified himself as Andy Genito, one of their former pupils who later came to the reunion. Noted among many well-known former Inglewood residents at the gathering were Frank Cotronese, Nuncio Varrichio, Ester Ziviani, Elisa Rossic, Margaret Tait and Anne Gillespie. During the day reunion organiser Charlie Parrella presented both Sister Margaret and Sister Ann with copies of his recently published book 'Charlie the Barber - My Memoir'. He said he had a very soft spot for Inglewood as it was the first place he had lived in when he came to Australia and where the people were still like a big family to him. He asked for 'expressions of interest' in having another reunion next year at the same time in the same place and judged the cheers of approval to be a resounding vote for "Yes". ●

The Mulberry Project is the brainchild of Nobby resident Louise Noble, who established a community garden on her property tended by new migrants to Australia and refugees and now also has a community garden in Toowoomba. Participants benefit from growing fresh produce to use in their national cuisines and from the social interaction The Mulberry Project provides. The Mulberry Project featured as a Free Times cover story in June last year, when work began on a new plot of ground next to St David's Anglican Church at Allora. The plan is to establish another community garden on the site, with Louise

FOCUS ON … Granite Belt Banter INDUSTRIAL ESTATE EXPANDS

Rare wine varieties from the Granite Belt were showcased in Brisbane recently.

RARE WINES ON SHOW Winemakers and vignerons from across the Granite Belt had their rare variety wines showcased at a 'Strangebird Cocktails and Canapes' event on the 'River Deck' at Brisbane's Parliament House on Thursday 23 May. Some of the highlights from the wines included -

· Pyramids Road Wines: 2018 Petit Verdot and 2017 Bernie's Blend (Cabernet, Merlot and Petit Verdot). · Jester Hill Wines: 2017 Roussanne 2016 and Touchstone Shiraz · Ridgemill Estate: 2018 Pinot Gris and 2017 Saperavi · Casley Mount Hutton Vineyard and Winery: Chenin Blanc and Viognier · Hidden Creek Winery Cafe Vineyard:

Picture: GBWT 2017 Hidden Creek Tempranillo and 2017 Unsung Hero Barbera The event was part of a series of Granite Belt Wine Country tasting experiences being held at Parliament House, showcasing wines from the 'Strange Bird Granite Belt Wine Trail'. The next event will be held in the Strangers' Dining Room on Friday 21 June.

The Southern Downs Regional Council says it is nearing completion of its latest expansion within the Stanthorpe Industrial Estate. A spokeswoman said the works have come about as a result of funding from the State Government's 'Works For Queensland' program along with funding from council to upgrade the external water main into this part of the Industrial precinct. "The project involved the extension of Rowley Court along with water, sewer, and electrical services, street lighting and construction of a stormwater detention basin adjacent to Stanthorpe Wreckers," the spokeswoman said. "This has allowed for the construction of three new allotments on the northern side of Rowley Court sized at 10000m2, 5750m2 and 4250m2 respectively, as well as the possibility of allotments on the southern side of the road. "The project has been able to utilise a number of contractors, predominantly local, along with the expertise of council's construction crew to build a first-class development. "Vast quantities of granite rock outcrops being shifted to make way for the new road and services. "It is hoped the creation of these allotments will ensure there is land available for any industrial ventures looking to relocate or expand into Stanthorpe, and grow the economy and industry into the future."

FOCUS ON … Granite Belt Banter The council is also completing a "duration and stay" traffic study of the CBD area in Stanthorpe, to determine where people are parking and why - are they tourists or residents - and for how long. The council has ruled out paid parking in the Stanthorpe CBD. A council spokeswoman said as part of the study the council is looking to obtain feedback from Stanthorpe locals "as to the current arrangement of parking, how residents, visitors and tourists are using existing parking in Stanthorpe, the amount - is there enough? - and location of parking facilities, and how parking in Stanthorpe's CBD area can be improved for both residents and tourists". "The survey results will inform council on ways in which parking could work better," the spokeswoman said. A lack of disability parking has already been raised as an issue by locals. To complete the survey visit the Southern Downs Regional Council's Facebook page and scroll down to the post with a link to 'Survey Monkey'.

ROAD PETITION Southern Downs councillors at their May meeting received a petition from residents calling for the sealing of Barnes Road at Applethorpe. A covering letter submitted with the petition from local horticultural producers noted there are three large

farming enterprises currently operating on Barnes Road, including Sunrise Strawberries, Sunstate Fruits Pty Ltd and a vegetable producer. The letter states those businesses all operate heavy vehicles and machinery including semi-trailers, low-loaders and tractors and that current corrugations on the road cause excessive wear and tear, and dust from the road settling on fresh produce. Council officers will investigate the issue and prepare a report for the June council meeting for possible funding in a future council budget.

KEY PRIORITIES... Apple and Pear Australia Limited (APAL) says it has identified eight key priorities it will be seeking to achieve with the new Morrison Coalition Government following last weekend's federal election. In a statement released this week APAL listed its priorities as the following · Establish a National Netting Program · Introduce an Ag Visa · Accelerate the Seasonal Worker Programme · Ensure equitable access to water · Protect the right to farm

· Pursue tariff and non-tariff barriers · Introduce a National Labour Hire Scheme · Improve education for biosecurity risks APAL said the combination of "ongoing extreme weather events and less than 40 per cent of apple and pear crops under net, ensures our priority with the new government is the establishment of a National Netting Program". ●

DECISION DEFERRED Also at the May meeting Southern Downs councillors voted to defer for 12 months a decision on a request by the Amiens History Association to re-locate the former Amiens Memorial School of Arts Hall from Fred Rogers Camp to the Amiens Historic Precinct. Councillors accepted a recommendation from council officers that a period of 12 months is required to seek suitable lessees - such as educational and community organisations - and to seek an "economic return from the asset in its current location". The council will also "seek an assurance from the Amiens History Association in regard to their financial and volunteer capacity to commit to the maintenance of the Hall in the long term prior to a final decision being made".

GARDEN TIME

BEATRICE HAWKINS

ROAD TRIP ACROSS SOME BEAUTIES Over the last two months I have done about 4000 kms through some wonderful country from here via Tamworth, Narromine, West Wyalong across the Hay plains to Mildura and then Adelaide. My family from WA were there for the Australian Age Swimming Championships. A truly wonderful experience to see my 14 year old granddaughter compete. I would love to have followed them to Darwin and seen them compete in the Arafura Games.... A very proud grandma can report that many medals were won there! From there I went up through Burra to Broken Hill intending to spend half a day and one night there and then go to family between Bourke and Louth for an extended visit to help with the drought feeding. It rained!! 3 inches!! And all the roads to that area were closed so I had a few very enjoyable days there and in Cobar waiting for roads to become passable. What a joy to finally arrive on the property with a car covered in red mud and see the paddocks begin to turn green. By the time I left on the 25th of May what had been windswept red and black desolate, bare paddocks were covered in green feed and white daisies, albeit only short, but the sheep were stronger, the cattle starting to pick up and the goats thriving! The stock had stopped coming to the sound of vehicles and chainsaws so the work load on the family had finally, after many months, eased considerably.

Any idea what the botanical name is for these native jonquils? Email Beatrice at hawkins.beatrice@yahoo.com The Darling River once again had a little water in it and the Warrego, and the fish, were running. So instead of drought feeding there was some serious recreational fishing enjoyed. Enough of a travelogue and now for some of the great garden things I saw along the way. No doubt the entire area I covered was suffering greatly from the dry conditions and there were very few crops growing or even prepared for sowing but most towns still had water, with few having restrictions, so there was still some beautiful gardens to see. I stopped and visited nurseries in several

General Classifieds V

towns and would have loved to buy but realised it was futile until we get rain here and water in Leslie Dam. Before I left I covered my vegetable garden in black plastic so that anything that germinated would be killed and it will be ready to plant when we do get rain. Along with everyone else in town without a water tank, all my garden beds are suffering severely. In Narromine there were some lovely roses in gardens around town. It is the perfect climate and soil for really spectacular roses and Yates had a large farm there growing rose bushes for sale when I used to live in the area. My father in law loved roses and particularly "Double Delight" and grew them beautifully at the edge of his vegetable garden when he retired to town. Mildura is an oasis in the desert and the trees and gardens there are a delight. There has been an extensive area of river frontage terraced and landscaped using massed plantings of many varieties of natives. With beautiful mature native trees down the centre of many streets it really is a beautiful city. Hahndorf was a delight with all the English trees in spectacular autumn colour and leaves blowing down the streets. In Adelaide after the swimming was over, we went to the 150 year old market area and saw a most wonderful display of hundreds of buckets of assorted flowers.

Huge sunflowers, natives, spectacular roses and many I didn't even recognise. The range and quality of the vegetables on offer also was impressive. Broken Hill astounded me with spectacular bouganvilleas in profusion, roses in full autumn flush along with lovely frangipani trees in bloom. That was an unexpected delight as I had thought the winters would have been too severe there for them to do so well. Bourke and Cobar are both really feeling the effect of water restrictions with many mature hedges and shrubs already dead and lawns almost non-existent but once again bouganvilleas provide wonderful splashes of colour in many older gardens. In the paddocks around Bourke I saw native jonquils in flower. These are something I haven't encountered before and are really lovely and I would like to try growing them in my garden here. I would also like to know if anyone can identify them from the picture and tell me their botanical name. They came up very quickly after the rain on the black soil flood plains and were flowering within three weeks. I'll keep praying for rain for all the drought affected areas and hope we will all be able to have beautiful spring gardens for the judging in October. Don't forget the free information night with Brian Sams on Wednesday night June 26th in the CWA rooms. ●

THE SPIN

DOMINANT WIN OVER MINNOWS Australia has made a good start to the defence of the ICC World Cup with a dominant win over minnows s expected the "sandpaper" offenders copped plenty of attention from the crowd. Both Smith and Warner answered their critics in the best possible way with outstanding performances as the Aussies went on to score a seven-wicket win. Looks like no amount of "raspberries" or Barmy Army jibes are going to easily put this pair off their game. England as host nation got the ICC World Cup tournament underway with a solid win over South Africa. With only a few games played there have already been some upset results. The Poms were rolled by Pakistan in their second game but the biggest surprise was the loss of South Africa to Bangladesh. Australia are next in action tonight when they take on the big hitting Windies. As this edition goes to print Aussies and especially Queenslanders have plenty to cheer about as Ash Barty goes about her business at Roland Garros. She is into the final eight with a big chance of going all the way. On the world golfing circuit another Queenslander Adam Scott looks to be finding his best form in some time. Just days out from the US Open Championship at Pebble Beach Links course, Scott finished runner up in the Memorial Tournament hosted by the great Jack Nicklaus. Scott had putts for birdie at 16 and 21 which would have put him into a play off with the winner Patrick Cantlay many pundits believe he is well placed to challenge for his second major. With Queensland sportsmen and women firing across the world I hope we are celebrating a Maroon Origin victory this morning. Casey CASLICK SECRET WEAPON? Many were left wondering whether the golden girl of World Rugby Sevens Charlotte Caslick was Maroon's coach Kevvie Walter's elusive TBA selection when she was drafted into the oppose session between the Ipswich Jets and Maroons early in the week. Caslick was at Davies Park to watch the oppose session. Caslick's Brother Sam plays for the Jets but is recovering from a shoulder injury so the pin up girl of Rugby Sevens was quickly recruited to league and was into the thick of things on the paddock and loving it.. Caslick comes from a league background (her father Don also played with the Jets) and she was a representative touch player before turning to Sevens. The Broncos have in the past tried unsuccessfully to poach her back to women's league. The speedster was pretty stoked as most Queenslanders would be to have had a run with and against the Maroons Hopefully Queenslanders are basking in the warmth of success after a win in Origin One as this edition hits your front yard and Caslick will be able to add "Assisted the Maroons to a win" to her already illustrious resume. TOUGH GIG FOR TIPSTERS Plenty of tipsters got caught in the curse of the deadly NRL split rounds last week and I was one of them. This week the challenge does not become any easier with players returning from Origin duties and a full round of eight games. I don't think we have seen a season as topsy turvy as 2019 for quite some time and that's before you try and factor in Origin and cross your fingers 26 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

Racheal Hendry (centre) was the recent winner of the Ladies Division 1 Club Championships at the Stanthorpe Golf Club. She is pictured with Nikki Waterworth l) (Division 1 Nett Winner) and Annelle Batterham (r) (Division 2 Nett Winner and Ladies Captain). that your preferred players come through Origin unscathed. It is round 13 so perhaps that will be a lucky omen for some. I'm prepared for settle for any help I can get WATTLES REBOUND FOR DOMINANT VICTORY Wattles rebounded from the shock of their loss in round eight to score a comprehensive win over Brothers last weekend. The 32-12 win ensured Wattles retained the Dan Ryan Memorial Shield and remain at the top of the TRL table as they head into their bye this weekend. In wet, miserable and testing conditions at Glenholme Park Wattles dominated. Wattles racked up eight tries to Brothers two and looked a far more dangerous outfit than at their previous outing in Gatton. There had been a lot of talk among the players during the week around their poor completion rate against Gatton and they certainly stepped their performance up a notch on Saturday. Michael Marshall added two tries to his season tally and opened the scoring on Saturday with the first of his tries in the fifth minute. Brothers hit back with a converted try before he inform TRL leading try scorer Braydon Wilson scored a first half hat trick to send his side to the half time break with a 20-6 half time lead. The visitors picked up where they left off in the second half extending the lead to 28-6 on the back of tries to Nick van der Poel and Nathan Gaulton. Brothers hit back with a converted try but the writing was on the board.

Thursday, 6 June, 2019

Braydon Wilson put the game beyond the reach of the home side when out stepped the Brothers defence to score his fourth try for the game and taking his season tally to 17. The normally accurate Wattles kickers had an off day on Saturday unable to nail one conversion but in the end the comprehensive win has Wattles sitting on 14 points equal with the Cowboys but ahead thanks to for and against differential. With a bye this weekend, the Cowboys breathing down their necks and Valleys only one point further afield Wattles and their supporters will be closely watching the outcome of games in round 10 as they look to secure a spot in the Madsen Rasmussen trophy final which will be played after round 11. In other matches played at Glenholme Park Wattles had a 28-16 win in Reserve Grade. In the Under 18 game honours went to Brothers with a 24-10 victory. A grade: Wattles 32 (Braydon Wilson 4, Michael Marshall 2, Nick Van Der Poel, Nathan Gaulton tries) d Brothers 12 (Alex McErlean, Tom Taylor tries; Wally Pegler 2 goals). ORIENTEERS RETURN TO FAVOURED VENUE Orienteers from Stanthorpe, Warwick, Inglewood and Toowoomba a will descend on the Passchendale State Forest area, north west of Stanthorpe on Sunday (June 9) for the Bullecourt Boulder Bounders Orienteering Club's next event. The Passchendale Forest is a popular Orienteering venue. The open pine plantation and eculaypt forest combined with areas of granite has been used for

orienteering for almost 30 years. At Sunday's event seven courses will be on offer catering for all ages and levels of ability. Novices who would like to learn more about the sport are most welcome to come along and have a try. Short, easy courses suitable for beginners and instruction will be provided on basic map reading and navigation skills. Directions to the venue will be well signposted however if you require further information details are available on the website www.oq.asn.au/event-calendar, by phoning 4683 6374 or emailing bbb@ oq.asn.au CHILLY START FOR SPORTERS Sporters kicked off winter with a chilly start even at the later tee off time on Sunday. Nikki Waterworth settled straight into winter with a Sporters win. Her score relegating Terry Byrnes to the runner's up position. Matt Waterworth kept things in the family. He finished the round with the Best Gross score and picked up the Pro Pin. Marg Locke and Aaron Simmers featured in the run downs. Bob Watts was on song at the 12th while Dick Hilton claimed the pin at 17. Sporters President Ray Thorn snuck off with one of the meat trays. The other found a home with Phil Zikan. It's officially winter which means Sporters will now tee off between 8.00am and 8.30am each Sunday. WELCOME BACK FOR BURTON Winter arrived in Stanthorpe on cue and the June Monthly Medal and putting competition kicked off a cool start to the winter season on Saturday for members of the Stanthorpe Golf Club. freetimes.com.au

Travis Burton who has only recently returned to competitive golf and regained his AGU handicap took the honours after returned a nett 67 score. Burton set up his three-shot win with a good front nine of 38 off the stick. His score on the run home allowed him to hold off all challengers and there were a few. A number of players returned a score of nett 70 however it was Mark McCosker who held on through the count back to claim the runner's up spot. McCosker and Reno Piovesan shared the putting honours - 26 for the round. Hope that Mark's slight mishap earlier in the week while acting as a TA at the Race Club does not interfere with his swing and putting this weekend. After claiming the Club Championship, the previous week Scott constable returned the lowest score (76) in the men's event. Constable also held the Pin Shot at three. The remaining Pin shots were held by Richard Reardon (12) and Tom Fittock (17), Matt Waterworth collected the pro-pin at 1/10, Stephen Kay at 5/14 and Travis Burton at 9/18. A score of nett 72 was good enough to give Margie Locke a win in the Ladies event. She played two even nines and was out in 47 and back in 49 to hold out the fast finishing runner up Trish Fittock (73). Trish also collected the prizes for best lady's gross of 92, the least number of putts (27); the pin shot at the12th and the 17th leaving the ladies pin at three for the overall winner. In the run down, Tom Fittock, Richard Reardon, Mick O'Brien, Terry Roser, Annelle Batterham and Linda Kelly each received a ball for their efforts on a cool but excellent day of golf which was sponsored by Stanthorpe Plaza Meats. Players will be keeping an eagle eye on the weather forecast this weekend with even cooler conditions forecast for the single

Stableford scheduled for Saturday. There is a time sheet on the board at the club house for this event sponsored by Keith and Helen Jones. A reminder that Tee off is at the earlier time of 11.00 am. DONN ON SONG IN COWBOYS WIN Craig Donn opened the scoring for the Cowboys in their game against Highfields at Fr Ranger Oval on Sunday and it was the start of an impressive game from the fullback who was rated by Coach Matt Grew best on ground. The game was only a couple of minutes old when Donn put his team on the scoreboard. The four nil lead was short lived however as Highfields scored next two tries to lead 10-4 midway through the first half. Forward Josh Cruice showed plenty of steely determination close to the line when he scored the Cowboys next shortly before half time. Mitchell Marshall added extras and at the break the scores were locked up at 10 all. Mistakes and poor ball security in the opening half proved costly for the Cowboys however they turned their performance around in the second half totally dominating their opponents. Josh Cruice then showed he has plenty of pace as he dummied and ran outsprinting the defence to score. Matthew Marshall was on song with the boot and added the extras to put the Cowboys up 16-10 minutes into the second half. Cruice's partner in the forwards, Coen Martin-Brown was the next to cross and the scoreboard quickly read 22-10 after the conversion. Winger Mitch Watson put the pedal to the metal evading defenders as streaked away to score from 60m out. Josh Cruice then scored his second and to wrap up an almost perfect round with the boot Matt

Marshall put the game well out of reach of Highfields who probably wished they had stayed in the sheds at half time. The final score 34-10. Warwick held the ball better; defended best and outmuscled their opponents in the second half. In the Reserve Grade Warwick scored a 14-12 win but Highfields were better in the under 18's scoring a 26-12. Texas posted another win in C Grade defeating Warwick 22-16. The cowboy's A Grade side will be looking for another win this weekend when play South's at Clive Berghofer Stadium on Saturday. A win in this game could secure them a start in the Madsen Rasmussen trophy game in a few weeks. A grade: Warwick 34 (Josh Cruice 2, Mitch Watson, Joe Fuimaono, Craig Donn, Coen Martin-Brown tries, Matt Marshall 5 goals) d Highfields 10. Win for Texas; Loss for Gremlins Our apologies to anyone who ventured to Sullivan Oval last Sunday expecting to see Stanthorpe and Texas in action. Obviously, it was too early in the day last week and my offsider had her fingers on the wrong buttons. It was of course Stanthorpe taking on Newtown at Glenholme Park and Texas taking on the Cowboys at Fr Ranger Oval. Texas got away to a blinder in their game scoring three unanswered tries before the Cowboys got on the board. Bryce and Brok Whale each scored early in the first half. Brok was successful with both of his conversion attempts before captain Bennett Sutton put the Terriers ahead 18 nil when he scored a converted try. Walter McIntosh put the home side on the board and Dylan Galloway followed with another in the shadows of the half time break. The Terriers led 8-8 at the break. Early in the second half Carlos Smith coming off the bench scored for the

CASEY O’CONNOR

Cowboys and when Dylan Galloway made it a double for the game the margin narrowed to two points at 18-16 in the visitor's favour. On full time Bennett Sutton extended the Terriers lead to 22-16 with his second try of the game. Texas this weekend travel to Goondiwindi to play the Boars. The Stanthorpe Gremlins played ladder leaders Newtown and suffered their third loss of the season. Newtown dominated play in the first half scoring three unanswered tries to lead 14-0 at the break. Regan Sullivan scored to put the Gremlins on the board early in the second half and his try was converted by Jake Burnell who has scored 32 points for his team this season. Newtown hit back with two converted tries to put the game beyond the reach of the Gremlins. The Gremlins have a bye this round. CONDITIONS KEEP PLAYRS OFF THE COURT Golf Croquet and Ricochet players can only be described as extremely keen or slightly crazy after playing last week in the almost arctic conditions in Stanthorpe. Only three hardy players turned put on Thursday for Golf Croquet. Bev Sullivan chose a dreadful day to return to the court after a prolonged absence but played well. In the first game Sullivan and Shirley page played Di Wren. Wren was in good form winning the game 13-6. Wren and Page played Sullivan in a reverse game and scored a narrow win. The final score 13-12. Conditions were even worse for the Ricchoet group proving a test of the player's skill and commitment. In a close game Eric McCulloch scored a one-point win over his opponents against Bill Golding and John Draper. In evenly matched game Carol Verwey and Val Fancourt scored a 21-20 win over their opponents Andrea Denkewitz and Marion McCulloch. The weather was obviously the big winner keeping many players at home and off the courts.
