"It is an extremely well run hospital that deals with all types of things wrong with children, especially things they're born wrong with." While at the Red Cross Hospital, Dr Stunden met his wife, Carol, who he credits in receiving his OAM as it "wouldn't have been possible" without her support. He also acknowledged the support of staff at Monash Health and Peninsula Health which he says is a "team effort." "It's not just me that's achieving an award, it think goes to the whole of the units." 12392692-LN28-18
the child but it's very rewarding." Born in Yorkshire, UK, Dr Stunden graduated from Edinburgh Medical School before arriving in Australia in 1979 where he took up paediatric surgery. In 1985, he spent two-and-a-half years in Cape Town, South Africa volunteering with the Red Cross Children's Hospital where there was mass racial violence. "There were about 20,000 political murders a year while I was there," he said. "The work load is enormous so you learn a lot very quickly under not quite first world conditions.

Long-term Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon has joined the Star News Group team. One of the busiest public figures in the region, Amanda will contribute a weekly Around Casey column to the Berwick News and Cranbourne News. The column is not linked to the mayoral role and will continue after the term expires later this year. It will aim to give a glimpse of the important events Amanda attends and the people she meets in the course of her civic duty. At the moment, there are between 25 and 30 appointments in the diary weekly - a number that doesn’t reduce by much when she is not wearing the mayoral robes. “I just love dealing with people and helping to solve their problems,” Amanda said. “And I have always had a dream to write for a newspaper one day, so this is a fantastic opportunity.” This week she kicks off with a tribute to good friend Rita Hartney, who passed away on Monday. Turn to page 9 for Amanda’s first Around Casey column.

Every day of the year, paediatric surgeon Dr Robert Stunden goes to work wearing short sleeve collared shirts and shorts. This, he says, helps children and their parents relax "rather than being put forward in front of a statue which they have to look up to." "I never wear a tie except for a funeral," the Devon Meadows resident says. As the head of paediatric surgery at Casey Hospital, Dr Stunden's efforts, and service to medicine in the field of paediatric surgery, have been honoured with an Order of Australia medal (OAM) in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honour list. With a career spanning nearly 50 years, he has volunteered tirelessly with a long list of groups. This includes being the founding member of the board of management with the Kooweerup Health Service where he served as chair and vice-chair. He also joined the committee of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and served as the secretary and Victorian representative with the Australian and New Zealand Association of Paediatric Surgeons. Today, he works at Monash Children's Hospital in Clayton and Peninsula Health in Frankston, conceding working with children "keep you young at heart." "I had always enjoyed working with children ... they get sick very quickly but they also get better very quickly if you treat them well," he explains. "You have to make decisions fairly quickly ... You've got to revised how you're managing

Enjoying all that he does By Danielle Kutchel After retiring from an exciting and fulfilling accounting career, Roger Lord OAM decided he wanted to spend his retirement helping people. His desire to give back to the community led him to the Riding for the Disabled Association Victoria (RDA), which was looking for a treasurer. "I worked in accounting all my life, so I have all sorts of experience and I thought 'if I can't do anything else, I can do that and help them,'" he explained. The Endeavour Hills resident said his skill set was a little more unusual in volunteers but was much needed. "And frankly, I enjoy doing it, it's a way I can help and ... make a difference." 'Enjoy what you do' is something of a mantra for the 72 year old, who has allowed the motto to drive him to various volunteer positions since retiring. He is currently on the finance committee of Beaconhills College and was a member of the board from 1998 to 2018. He also assists Fernlea House in Emerald as a treasurer and board member. "Plus, they've got an op shop in Emerald and we enjoy gardening, so we go up there and do their garden which has got nothing whatsoever to do with accounting, but we enjoy doing it!" he laughed. "And that's the crucial thing, if you enjoy doing something, you will do it." Mr Lord has also assisted the disability community in other ways, including by setting up a classroom at Beaconhills for after school
Roger Lord OAM said the "crucial thing" is to always enjoy what you do. 194399 care for children with a disability. In 2011 Mr Lord was named the City of Casey's Citizen of the Year, and last year he became a Life Member of Beaconhills College. Now, he can add 'Medal of the Order of Australia' to his list of achievements too, having been included on the Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to people with a disability through sport, and to the community. He plans to continue assisting the community in various capacities for as long as he can - and as long as he can still enjoy it. "It's selfish really because it's a smorgasbord; they're quite different and what makes it more fun is the variety. It's a good mix, and as long as I can, I'll keep doing it," he said.
Former mayor delighted By Mitchell Clarke For Garry Runge, being awarded with an Order of Australia medal has left him feeling “delighted”. The Beaconsfield man and local hero hosts an impressive list of achievements on his professional resume, and as of Monday 10 June, he will be able to add another. Mr Runge was notified that the Governor General had approved the award to him just over a week ago but he’s been sworn to secrecy until the Queen’s Birthday public holiday. The award recognises his service to local government and community over a period of time. “I’m delighted. I’ve worked 30 years for Victoria Police and I’ve been acknowledged for my service to the council and service to the community,” Mr Runge said. “I do know that as of Monday, I am entitled to use the initials OAM after my name. That’s a legitimate use of the abbreviation which I will use.” It’s not the only abbreviation which is currently attributed to Mr Runge, the former long serving Victoria Police member is also a JP - for his role as justice of the peace. The passionate community man was also a former councillor and Mayor at Cardinia Shire Council from 2002-2005, a position which he holds much pride. “The highlight for me, look, being a member of Victoria Police for 30 years was a highlight. Being appointed as mayor of the shire was definitely a key thing which I really take a lot of pride in,” Mr Runge said. “Not everyone becomes a mayor of the shire of a municipality, so that’s certainly a highlight.” Garry said the best part of his role as mayor was representing a great municipality and having the power to make citizens. “At citizenship ceremonies, the mayor turns non-citizens into citizens by law, so the ability to do that was really great,” Mr Runge said.
“Cardinia is a fantastic municipality to be a part of. It’s a great growth corridor with lots of young families coming here.” After being a member of the community for so long, Garry has noticed many changes in his times but continues to still hold a very strong association in the area. “It’s definitely changing rapidly. Re-doing of the boundaries for the Federal Election has meant this is a changed community, a lot more multicultural. Cardinia will go on leaps and bounds,” Mr Runge said. “I’ve seen massive changes in the area largely positive. I think this area has really developed well. “It’s a great place to live. It’s got everything - a great little community, a great lot of people, a safe community. We’re entrenched in Beaconsfield.” Among his list of credentials, Garry has been a board member for Cranbourne Turf Club since 2010 and the Beaconsfield Community Sporting Club since 2015. Up until recently, Garry was MP Jason Wood’s chief of staff. While Garry continues to support his local community, he now works full time in Prahran as the Grand Secretary of Freemasons Victoria, a job which he takes immense pride in. Freemasonry is a group of about 8500 men across Victoria who belongs to Masonic villages. He described it as a way of “making good men, better men”. “My role is to administer Freemasonry and support the board and the Grand Master of Freemasons and that’s a really great brotherhood and fraternity,” Mr Runge said. While he will spend Monday celebrating numerous congratulatory phone calls, he claims the award hasn’t gone to his head. “The reason I use JP and will use OAM is to demonstrate to people out there that you can do community service and you can be rewarded for it and once you’re awarded, you should be proud of it,” he said.

Berwick’s belter Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.
The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has
now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

IN BRIEF Motorcyclist dies
Double for Darose
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision which occurred in Hampton Park on Thursday, 6 June. Officers believe a car was travelling south along Hallam Road about 4.45pm when the driver attempted to execute a u-turn. A following motorcycle crashed into the rear of the car as it was attempting its turn. The rider of the motorcycle, believed to be a man in his 30s, died at the scene. The driver of the car was uninjured and has spoken to police. Police will prepare a report for the coroner. Hallam Road was closed for a stretch in both directions between the Princes Highway and Pound Road.
By Hayley Wildes Flemington is arguably the most storied racecourse in the county and on Saturday afternoon Cranbourne local Jade Darose etched her name in the track's history books. Darose became the first ever dual licence holder to win at Flemington when she rode Parwan Prince - her only horse in training - to victory in the 1000-metre All Victorian Sprint Series Handicap. "I still find it a little bit unbelievable - he's been such a good horse and to go to Flemington and win when you think you weren't quite ready is just unreal," Darose said. "He was going well, but I just thought he might need the run; I thought he'd be a run short, but clearly he wasn't!" As a dual licence holder, Darose is both a licenced jockey and trainer - a rare accomplishment that has only been possible since 2016 after rules were changed to allow those willing to do both. While being a jockey and trainer is uncommon, success as a dual licence holder is even more infrequent. Darose has trained Parwan Prince since attaining her dual licence in 2016 and claimed her first win with the horse in late 2016 at Ballarat, but on that occasion she wasn't the jockey - instead handing over the reins to Kassie Furness. In 2017, Darose claimed her first dual licence win on board Parwan Prince at Geelong. But to win at Flemington is simply extraordinary. Coming down the final straight, Parwan Prince was in the lead with the rest of the field charging home. Darose, who has been riding horses for as long as she can remember, admits she wasn't sure how the final 100 metres were going to

pan out. "I thought the other horses were coming a bit quicker and the post was a bit further away, so I thought he was going to get rolled, but he's so tough and he just fought," she said. Trying to find the balance as both a trainer and jockey is a challenge, but Darose's love for horses makes it possible. "I think I'm really lucky that I can still ride track work for a lot of people and you pick up different ideas from different trainers, so you're always learning," she said. "It's a little bit tricky to balance because I've also got a son who is four-years-old. "I've got to drop my son at daycare in the morning, then I go pick up the horse, take him to the track, ride him, ride for a few other stables at Cranbourne, at the end of the morning I take him home, then go back and get ready to go to the races. "It's a bit of a juggle, but we manage." Being able to start the initial transition into training, while still jockeying, was the drawcard
for Darose to get a dual licence back in 2016. "There were a couple of us who pushed forward and got our licences straightaway to do both," she said. "Now there's a few more coming through which is really good because sometimes when you're riding, you kind of need to transition into something else too. "It's a bit of a transition into going from riding to training if you're heading that way." Saturday's historic, and unlikely, win at Flemington - Parwan Prince was a $12 outsider to win the race - was a moment to savour and Darose admits she isn't sure what the future holds for the gutsy horse. "He doesn't get many runs because he's got a lot of problems - he spends a lot of time on the sidelines, but he makes up for it," she said. "I just sort of have to take it as it comes because he really is a race-by-race horse. "He can't race through summer because the tracks are too hard, so you're kind of limited to winter time when the tracks are a bit softer."
Troubled time but Jemma comes out clean By Brendan Rees When Jemma Attard was a teenager her life spiralled out of control when she regularly used marijuana and GHB. It wasn't until the 21-year-old, formerly of Narre Warren South, found help from Glenn Munso and the Youth You Program in Hallam when she got her life back on track. "I'd been using for about four to five years straight before I got into Glenn's program," she explained. "I ended up in really bad situations with partners and that sort of stuff." Since attending sessions twice a week through the program, Jemma's life has turned around. She has been clean from drugs for the past 12 months, and works full-time at Fountain Gate Hotel. The Youth You Program uses a combination of time in the gym, community engagement and mentoring sessions to help young people get off drugs. "Gym wasn't really my thing, never has been. I was a bit like 'Oh I don't know if this is going to
work.' I ended up loving it," Jemma said. "The people that were there, the groupthey were all like understanding. They understood the situation I was in because they had gone through it themselves. "They weren't like judgemental or anything; they were always there to listen," she said. Prior to the program, Jemma, who now lives in Pakenham, completed Year 12 at Lara Secondary College, where she did a school-based apprenticeship in animal studies while working in a pet shop. From there, she says "Just got mixed up with the wrong crowd and never really did anything about that after I finished school.". Jemma said she also had problems with family and "never really dealt with it and just went off the rails." Looking back at the program, she said "I didn't think that I had that mental strength to do it." "I was proud of myself because I didn't think that I would be able to do it."
Police are investigating a theft after a man attended a retail store in Narre Warren, and allegedly stole a Samsung mobile phone on 5 May. The man entered the store about 1.20pm and left with the phone valued at $549 without making any attempt to pay. Police have released CCTV images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com. au and quote incident number 190160589.
Security guard set upon by thugs A group of youths have attacked a security guard while horrified shoppers looked on at Cranbourne Park Shopping centre on Wednesday 5 June. Police were called to a shopping centre on the South Gippsland Highway about 4pm after reports of a number of people fighting. A security guard broke up the fight and was allegedly hit to the side of the head, sustaining minor injuries. Police arrested five males at the scene. A 16-year-old, 17-year-old, two 18-yearolds and a 19-year-old have been released pending further enquiries. The investigation is ongoing.

Horse riding was something Sally Francis was born to do. The Tooradin resident of more than 50 years first rode a horse at the age of four and her passion has seen her contribute to the community for many years. Today, her dedication in volunteering with Riding for the Disabled Victoria and Riding for the Disabled Australia has earned her an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for service to people with a disability and horse sports. Ms Francis said the best part about her role as a trainer and mentor at her Tooradin Estate riding school was helping a student grow. "It's just so rewarding to see them communicating with the horse and communicating with me and the people that are also helping them," she said. "In turn, just preparing them for life and improving their general living skills, so that's very rewarding." When told of her honour, she said was "incredibly shocked and honoured." "I love horses, and I've got a wonderful team of school horses; love how much they give as well to ensure the success of the program." Ms Francis, 58, has volunteered her time in coaching and mentoring in Paralympics over the years including Beijing, Rio, London, Sydney, and Atlanta. But it was her time as the Australian para equestrian team manager at the London Paralympics in 2012 where she helped a rider from Broadford take out gold, that was most memorable. "The Paralympics is very satisfying and very rewarding, very moving, and we've had quite a bit of success as well," she said. "It's lovely helping a team of riders and horses to pair get overseas and them for them to compete in the main area."
Sally Francis with Lulu and Chloe. 194374 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Ms Francis, who also teaches at the Tooradin Dalmore Pony Club, contends she finds any achievement - even at a local level "just as important." "I think it's really the magic of horses. What the magic of horses can really bring to people to achieve great things." Ms Francis' parents, who she described as "good horse people" moved from Mt Eliza to Tooradin in 1996 where they began the riding school in Tooradin. "It was on the cards that I was going to take over the business. I didn't actually take it over until my mum passed over, so that was 2008." Ms Francis says she will celebrate her Queen's Birthday honour with friends and family during an afternoon tea party at home.

CCTV clue for hotel theft Police hope CCTV images will identify a man and a woman following a theft and subsequent deceptions and fraud in Lynbrook earlier this year. Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives have been told the victim, a 61-year-old Hampton Park woman, attended a hotel on 14 March. While in the gaming room, a man spoke to the victim distracting her while another woman took her purse from inside her hand bag. Bank cards contained within her purse were then used at various locations. On 8 May a care worker for the victim noted bank accounts had been opened in the victim's name and money redirected. Investigators have released CCTV of two people who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries. The man is perceived to be of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern decent, aged in his late
20s, with short dark hair, a dark beard, and tattoos on his upper arms. At the time he was wearing a black KSCY brand t-shirt. The woman is perceived to be of Mediterranean of Middle Eastern decent, aged in her 50s, with shoulder length dark hair. She was wearing a red t-shirt and black and white jacket. Anyone with information or who recognises the man or woman is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
The public are urged to Contact Crime Stoppers if they recognised this woman.

Councillor calls for more police on Casey streets By Brendan Rees A Casey Councillor has declared residents will "continue to suffer" unless more police resources are provided by the State Government in tackling hoon behaviour. Cr Sam Aziz said "The big issue here is actually Victoria Police rather than speed calming devices." It comes after council conducted traffic surveys along Josephine Avenue and Tinks Road amid community concerns of speeding drivers. Speed and volume data showed the majority of motorists travelled within the speed limits, according to a council document. According to VicRoads data there has been
one crash at the intersection of Tinks Road and Josephine Avenue resulting in one person injured in the five year period between 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2018. But Cr Aziz said the State Government had to do their part and provide Casey with more police numbers. "The police are doing their absolute best in our local area," he said, but added: "our residents continue to suffer and without visible policing." "You also get things like home invasions on the up as well. It's very frustrating. "It's no good for the State Government to come back and say 'this is a policing matter.' Sure it is but you've got to give the police more
resources to do their job. "What we need is more police resources to enforce the existing speed limits," Cr Aziz said. In April, Victoria Police announced 32 police officers were headed to the Casey police service area. Senior Constable Jason Hession of Casey Highway Patrol said most drivers complied with the speed limit along Josephine Avenue. He said cars were "banked up bumper to bumper" during peak times. "There might be the occasional one in 200 cars that might be an idiot but they can't all speed, it's bumper to bumper if it's school times," he said. "You just can't move in there. If it's outside
those times it might be worth having a look at, but if it's in school times, I've been out there, you can't move. "We'll continue to head out down, make sure people obeying the speed limit and not school zones." Sen Cons Hession reminded all drivers to slow down, particularly around schools: "Ten kilometres an hour can make a huge difference in braking." Councillors voted to monitor the traffic conditions on Josephine Avenue and Tinks Road at their 16 April meeting. Council has written Casey Highway Patrol about the community's concerns of driver behaviour on these roads and surrounding area.

Stolen car smashes home By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Brendan Rees At first, Chantal George thought what there had been a loud crash out in the Eumemmerring street in the wet, early hours of Monday 3 June. Still awake at 1.30am, she ran to investigate - and then noticed her front lounge room. Poking through its shattered front windows was the nose of a white Volkswagen Golf, headlights on and wipers running. She called for her husband Chris to phone for an ambulance to the Doveton Avenue address. By the time she got outside to assist, whoever was in the stolen crashed car had fled. Fortunately Chris had not fallen asleep on the lounge-room couch this particular night,
she said. Two of their sons were also home asleep. “I’ve said to my husband that one day someone is going to come through that window,” a shaken Ms George said. “I have always wanted a front fence.” Police say a Hawthorn man reported that the Golf was stolen, with the driver still at large. The cause of the crash and the circumstances of the theft were still under investigation. Narre Warren SES that night boarded up the extensive damage. It got the call out while attending a truck that lost a load of timber and plants on Abeckett Road, Narre Warren. “This was the second car through a house in a matter of days that we’ve responded to,“
A quickly-abandoned hatchback was driven into a Eumemmerring lounge room. 194311 Picture: NARRE WARREN SES
Narre Warren SES spokesman Aaron Heathcote said. “Last Wednesday evening a car hit a house in Cranbourne. Thankfully there were no injuries.” For Ms George, the crash came on the back of a series of personal setbacks this year. “It was the last thing I needed.
“I’ve got the family support. Everyone at work and school have rang up. “It helps to have the community around you.” Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
Tempers flare, security called in at budget hearing By Andrew Cantwell There was high drama at Tuesday night’s Casey Council special budget meeting when gallery regular John Glazebrook was booted from the chamber after ugly altercations with the mayor and a security guard. Mayor Amanda Stapledon, perhaps anticipating trouble, had earlier made it clear to those wishing to speak on their budget submission that Casey was a respectful council, and derogatory comments towards the council or officers would not be tolerated. Mr Glazebrook fell afoul of the mayor’s caution from his opening words. “I’m disappointed,” he said, “that four councillors haven’t turned up for this budget meeting.” He was promptly warned by the mayor that those comments were considered derogatory,
and then urged to speak to his submission. Things went downhill from there. With his voice raised, Mr Glazebrook again launched into the council. The mayor again stopped Mr Glazebrook and asked him to take a seat while another submission was heard. “I’ll give you five minutes to think about your behaviour,” the mayor said. But Mr Glazebrook wasn’t about to yield the floor. Rising to his feet, he protested and shouted that the instruction showed how authoritarian the council really was. While the mayor tried to bring Mr Glazebrook to order, a security guard then made his way over to where Mr Glazebrook was standing. Turning to the guard, Mr Glazebrook demanded to know: “Are you standing there to intimidate me”.
That was the last straw for the mayor, who promptly ordered him from the chamber. Mr Glazebrook grabbed his papers and flanked now by two security guards was marched from the meeting room. Mr Glazebrook’s substantive issues in the submission he never got to speak to revolved around council ‘junkets’, the council’s China engagement policy, renewable power and social housing issues. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association spokesman Brendan Browne was also given a caution before giving the association's report card on the budget, stressing the budget should be affordable, the rate rise at a minimum - not maximum - level permitted, and that councillors could earn a five-star rating by adopting the several recommendations in the CRRA submission. By far the best reception was for three
speakers asking for better facilities at Berwick's Edwin Flack Reserve - home of the state's second largest Little Athletics group. The club is host to almost 500 kids, was the second largest sporting group in Casey behind Berwick Junior Soccer Club, hosted numerous regional events involving close to 700 participants - all in facilities that were too small, too old and poorly provisioned by the council. The reserve was, they indicated, a poor second cousin to the cutting-edge Casey Fields reserve which had had lavish attention from the council to date. The points were well made and the speakers thanked for their presentations. The council received 11 submissions on the draft budget. All will be considered by the council before next week’s regular meeting where a revised draft budget is expected to be adopted.

School’s day for Afghani celebration

By Brendan Rees Vibrant dress wear was the theme of the day at Hampton Park Primary School as the school celebrated Afghani culture. On Friday 7 June, the school held an Afghani Day to celebrate learning the Afghani language and culture. The students participated in a range of activities including a presentation from talented dancers, and tasting of some delicious Afghan food. School principal Liz Davey said students had the opportunity to learn so much from the broad experiences of their peers, with so many different cultures represented across the school. "As a school we have planned other culture days across the year to highlight our diversity and to continue to celebrate and acknowledge our diverse community," she said.

It is with much sadness to learn that Rita Hartney passed away on Tuesday morning, 11 June. Rita was someone very special to me and to so many others; she was our Senior Citizen of the Year in 2015, an international speaker, a business coach/mentor, author of three books and staunch women’s advocate. I will always remember Rita for being a positive, happy, funny, determined lady who entertained us as guest speaker at so many events. She also co-presented on my radio program “Women of Today“ and attended every event possible when Senior Citizen of the Year and held many conversation groups that attracted great attendance and participation. Rita’s love of her family was something she always expressed when chatting and my thoughts are with them today. I will be honouring Rita’s life in council on Tuesday of next week at 6.30pm. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Opening night for this fabulous production was sold out, many attending were in costume including our friends from Casey Radio, who laid out the red carpet for interviews prior to and after the show. The night was complemented by a fabulous orchestra, very professional performances with some real surprises and delights. By Brendan Rees A huge collection of stunning historical artefacts from ancient China's Han Dynasty has been showcased at Bunjil Place. The exhibition transformed the studio into a time capsule, exploring a culture and lifestyle of the Han Dynasty that spanned over 2,000 years. The event, which took place from 7-10 June, was also attended by Chinese consulate officials, and formed part of City of Casey's first Chinese Cultural Festival. On display was traditional Chinese lacquer artwork, and a 3D digital representation of relics found in the royal tomb. The Han Dynasty ruled China from 206 B.C. to 220 A.D, and was renowned for its promotion of Confucianism as the state religion and saw the start of the Silk Road trade route to Europe. Casey councillor Sam Aziz said the event

By Danielle Kutchel The bustling hub of Beaconsfield has well and truly come of age and is a far cry from what was once known as ‘little Berwick’. Now, the town stands in its own right as a treasure trove of health and wellness offerings, fresh food and cafes and restaurants that wouldn’t look out of place in central Melbourne. Not far from the historical meeting place and shire boundary marker of Cardinia Creek stands Beaconsfield’s original pub, now known as the Central Hotel. Behind this local landmark, the Beaconsfield Shopping Plaza houses large supermarkets that serve the growing community, as well as smaller specialty stores and fun cafes like Four Figs and Ducky in the Field. Across the highway in the original strip of shops, newcomer Daydreamers Caf¨¦ has made its presence known. Not far from here is Beaconsfield’s own two-hatted restaurant, O.My., famous for its garden-to-plate philosophy. To ensure visitors to the town are looking and feeling their best, a number of hairdressers, medical clinics and even a tattoo parlour ply their trades. Beaconsfield Fitness Centre is something of a town landmark and has since been joined by other gyms and trainers throughout the locale. The Beaconsfield Hub is another recent addition to the town’s offerings, including more restaurants, casual cafes and specialty stores selling everything from cycling gear to swimming pools. Add in a plethora of walking trails and parks criss-crossing the creek, sporting facilities for a variety of codes and a proud football club, and it’s easy to see why Beaconsfield is such a fastgrowing community. Beaconsfield is all grown up and just waiting to be discovered.

Becoming a lawyer has been almost a lifelong dream for solicitor Kristina Tutic, who decided at the age of 10 that the legal profession was for her. After graduating from Deakin University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Law with honours and a Bachelor of Science, Ms Tutic was officially admitted to practice in November 2016 and was immediately promoted to lawyer at Neal Collin Lawyers in Berwick, where she had begun working as a legal assistant while finishing her degrees. Now reaching three and a half years at Neal Collin and with more responsibility over managing the practice, she still maintains personal interaction with her clients to ensure they feel valued. “My main focus is on contested estates and family law. I do a lot of mediations as well as litigation and court preparation. I do appearances in the Magistrate’s Court, Federal Circuit Court, Family Court, County Court and Supreme Court,” Ms Tutic said. She is also involved in preparing the next generation of young lawyers to follow in her footsteps. “I am now mentoring university students who are completing law degrees and undertaking placements with me,” Ms Tutic explained.

Lynda Campbell is the owner of Go Vita Berwick and recently opened a new venture within the same shopping centre, called Berwick Bulk Foods. The new shop has a focus on sustainability and zero waste, with customers encouraged to bring in their own containers to fill with not only foods, but also cleaning products. Lynda has a comprehensive background in the health industry, having been an aromatherapist and trainer for 10 years. She was also a sales representative for a leading health brand for 10 years. With children who attend primary and high schools in Berwick, the transition to a health food shop owner was an easy career choice. “I’m so lucky to work with some amazing local people in my industry. The shops employ qualified naturopaths, nutritionists, cosmeticians and people with a passion for good food and health,” Lynda said. “We also offer referrals to the upstairs clinical services of an acupuncturist, osteopath, masseur and naturopath.”

ON THE COVER
SOAK UP THE TRANQUILITY RAMLEGH Springs is a high-quality residential community located in the gently undulating landscape of Clyde North. Carefully planned to ensure a liveable, walkable and vibrant local neighbourhood, there are few land estates in Clyde North that can boast the current and future amenity that Ramlegh Springs offers. The signature feature of Ramlegh Springs is the open space of its central wetlands. Making a bold and beautiful entry statement; the Ramlegh Springs wetlands will provide residents with a tranquil setting where meandering boardwalks and nature trails link to water bodies of around nine

Beyond the wetlands, there are also two signature parkland spaces, sports grounds, a brand new YMCA Early Learning Centre and a Kingswim Learn To Swim School, both of which opened in early 2019. Ramlegh Springs also features a proposed future town centre, which will provide everyday convenience to residents, as well as a proposed primary school (with State Government funding recently announced). Works are now also underway on the Ramlegh Family Community Centre. Due to complete in March 2020, this council

FOCUS ON … CHILDCARE CHOICES
Be your best St Margaret's School's Early Learning Centre's program is founded on the belief that young children need a quality educational setting that nurtures every child, whilst empowering them to be the best they can. The Australian Early Development Census reports, 'Evidence tells us that a person's life successes, health and emotional wellbeing have their roots in early childhood. We know that if we get it right in the early years, we can expect to see children thrive throughout school and their adult lives.' St Margaret's is perfectly placed to provide a quality program that supports children to achieve their full potential and to make highly successful transitions to school. During the morning children are encouraged to engage in specifically planned play experiences, where teachers work side by side with them, to scaffold their thinking, encourage their curiosity and support their perseverance and commitment to seeing tasks through
to completion. Participating in highly valued specialist sessions, the children's skills are further enhanced through music, physical education and library sessions within the junior school environment. Not only supporting the development of a broad range of vital skills, these classes enable the children to become familiar with the school environment and develop an understanding of school culture. To ensure the development of the whole child, afternoons are spent working in small focused groups. During this time the children work collaboratively on targeted skills designed to ensure that they engage in a wide range of experiences, which they may not choose of their own accord during the valued free choice morning play sessions. Having high expectations of the children, whilst nurturing their unique personalities and capabilities, ensures that St Margaret's is providing a high quality early childhood education.
St Margaret’s School’s Early Learning Centre’s program supports children to reach their full potential.

SPORT
The Cavs are on the rise By Hayley Wildes As the saying goes; the proof is in the pudding. After making substantial changes to the junior development programs at Casey Basketball Association last year, there is no doubt that the results are showing and the hard work is paying off. There are more Casey junior athletes than ever playing high-level representative basketball, making state teams, attending major Basketball Victoria events and simply getting better. "The biggest thing for us is that we've gone through massive change at Casey with our systems of play and our style of play," Casey Basketball development manager, Darren Best said. "Having that updated curriculum and having worked in the state and national pathway myself, a lot of the things that we now do at practice are very similar to the things that are being done in Basketball Victoria pathways." Recently, 14 Casey juniors - an association record - were selected to take part in the Basketball Victoria Showcase; the first step of talent identification for Basketball Victoria. Only 80 boys and 80 girls are selected to participate in the tournament. Casey's Elisa Brown, Dynahia Masters, Tiearra Meredith, Kendra Rivet, Maddison Rogers, Sophie Toth and Bindi Wood will take place in the girl's showcase, while Jack Byrne, Aiden Collinson, Nickolas Davies, Caplen Dexter, Marcus Donaldson, John Efunkanbi and Parker Rivet were selected to the boy's showcase. Those athletes are continually practicing hard at Casey Stadium and the development programs are helping them take the next step. "Those kids are practicing three or four times a week through our programs, let alone what they're doing outside," he said. "We have a program called Cavs Advantage
which is open to all of our representative kids - it's another quality practice and we have five coaches that come to those practices and have a really good coach-to-athlete ratio." With so many juniors seeing improvement in themselves, the vibe around the association is terrific and the hard workers are being rewarded. "There's definitely a good feel around the stadium, particularly on competition night with everyone pretty pumped to play," he said. "I think what it has done is made sure that the kids who are really committed have that pathway now. "We're definitely on the rise as an association - all of the property development around us is only going to keep us growing, so our job is to continue to evolve and come up with ways to facilitate basketball for everyone in our area." Having dedicated and experienced coaches has been one of the most important aspects of Casey's rise and Best explains the programs in place for the association's coaches to continue to develop their skills. "There's been a fair bit of coach education going on," he said. "We have several coach development opportunities throughout the year; we have coaching clinics, we bring guest coaches in and we also run coaching accreditation at the association." With just under 7000 registered members, three quarters of which are juniors that make up close to 700 junior domestic teams and 44 representative teams, Casey Basketball Association is providing a platform for locals to achieve their basketball dreams. "Big things are on the horizon for Casey and it's just going from strength to strength," he said. "We're really happy with how it's going, but definitely not satisfied."

Battle wins it for the Doveton Eagles over Keysborough By Hayley Wildes SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 5 (SPILT ROUND) Another standalone fixture over the weekend pitted an unbeaten Keysborough team against the Doveton Eagles and it was a thriller. When the game was there for the taking, it was the Eagles' Nick Battle who rose to the occasion and produced the match-winning goal after a back and forth contest all day. The Eagles entered the first break with a one-point lead but, despite dominating proceedings in the second quarter, were unable to make the most of their chances in front of goal in windy conditions as they kicked 1.8 (14) in a wasteful term to lead by just nine points at half time. With stars from both teams playing well - including the likes of Tim Werner and Matt Carnelley for the Burras and Cameron Carmody and Nick Beer for the Eagles - it was a gripping battle. Keysborough came out firing in the second half as its work around the contest, coupled with Doveton's continued inaccuracy, saw the side take control of the quarter. The Burras booted three goals, while the Eagles could manage just six behinds and, with a quarter to play, Keysborough led by seven points, 7.6 (48) to 4.17 (41). The fourth quarter was a fitting conclusion as both teams fought tooth and nail for the ascendency. As the final minutes ticked down, the Eagles led by one point after missing gettable chances to put the game to bed. But as the saying goes; cometh the hour, cometh the man. After being held well all day, Eagles superstar Nick Battle slotted the gamewinning major - from an errant Burra kick-in - to give the Eagles a memorable win. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
Seagull Julian Suarez celebrates a third quarter goal against the Demons. 194281 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS The final scoreline displayed the dominance, but lack of composure in front of goal by Doveton, which eventually came away with an eight-point win, 7.22 (64) to 8.8 (56). Andrew Ray was superb for Doveton in a brilliant display, while Troy Cullen did all he could for Keysborough. MORNINGTON PENINSULA DISION 2 - ROUND 9 Pearcedale was no match for Crib Point on the road after a dominant first half from the Magpies had them 54 points up at the main break. The Panthers fought back in the second half, but with Tom Panich bagging nine majors, Crib Point went onto win by 51 points, 18.16 (124) to 11.7 (73). Max Gearon and Travis Bravo were best for Pearcedale in another loss. Devon Meadows almost claimed a win
against Somerville, but fell short by one goal. In a seesawing battle, the Panthers were in the game all the way as Patrick Harmes and Riley Thorpe battled manfully, but couldn't get over the line, falling 10.15 (75) to 9.15 (69). VFLW ROUND 5 After a heartbreaking loss last weekend, the Casey Demons again fell agonisingly short of a win at Casey Fields on Sunday against Collingwood. The Demons got off to a strong start to lead by seven points at the first break, but the Magpies kicked into gear in the second term to hold Casey scoreless while scoring three goals of their own. With Harriet Cordner making her presence felt around the contest, the Demons fought back strongly in the third and entered the final
term three points adrift. Collingwood kicked the first major of the fourth quarter to skip out to a nine-point lead, but Cordner gave Casey hope with an important goal halfway through the term. The final 10 minutes of the contest were brutal as both teams gave their all in search of the four points. Casey just couldn't get the job done in the closing stages and fell by three points, 5.4 (34) to 5.1 (31). Maddy Guerin (two goals) was important up forward, while Cordner led from the front all day. WEST GIPPSLAND ROUND 9 The famous rivalry between Tooradin-Dalmore and Kooweerup was re-ignited over the weekend for the first time since the Seagulls entered the WGFNC. Despite being well within striking distance entering the fourth term, the Seagulls couldn't answer the Demons' final punch and fell by 39 points, 16.18 (114) to 10.15 (75). Kooweerup's forward line trio of Luke McMaster, Darren Sheen and Jason Wells (three goals each) was in fine touch and with the likes of Joel Gibson and Mitch Collins dominating across the ground, the Gulls had their work cut out for them. The Seagulls were just 11 points adrift at the final change as Brad Butler, Lewis Hill and Julian Suarez (three goals) kept their side in the game, but when the Demons pushed hard in the final term, the visitors' defence was under all sorts of pressure and couldn't keep up. The final term was blown wide open by Kooweerup, as evidenced by their 14 scoring shots to just six as the Demons ran away with the comprehensive win. Thursday, 13 June, 2019

There is set to be plenty of movement between divisions in the Outer East in 2020. 193860 Picture: ROB CAREW
AFL Outer East is set to shun the traditional relegation process in 2020, with region head office confirming it is going to make a raft of changes as it searches to fast track the structure for its Outer East football and netball competition moving forward. Star News understands that clubs will be provided the opportunity to apply to move down a division in 2020, even if they do not finish last in 2019. Premiership teams and teams placing last will follow the relegation promotion system, however it means that next year, Outer East rather than implementing the traditional one up, one down model - will see plenty of movement occurring between divisions, a process that region general manager Aaron Bailey explained to Star News as requiring a “whole club consideration”. “As we get any indications of clubs looking to move down, which we will do in Premier and Division 1, we will seek indications from clubs who wish to move into higher divisions. This may see increased movement in 2019 than we traditionally see,” he said. “We will continue to look at our competition structure, however at this stage nine, nine and eight is preferable for 2020. “Being a new structure - and the Division 1 and 2 being really good competitions - the Premier Division at the moment is not as competitive as we’d like, and this will allow clubs to have some control of their own destiny, and able to identify where the best fit is to build a long and sustainable program at their club. “This allows clubs to speak to their players, coaches, sponsors and members and set clear direction for next year and beyond. Movement up from divisions below will be confirmed once we have a clear indication of club preferences in the division above. “Clubs who are at the bottom end of divisions, but believe that division is best fit for them, now can put the steps into place to be successful in that division and start building for the next three to five years.” Bailey added that there has already been some initial discussion about next year, with Star News understanding that several clubs have already indicated their preferences. “Clubs have spoken to us (already) about their best fit for 2020, so the conversations have certainly started, but the formalities will be a four to six week process, and once we know who wants to go down, we’ll be able to outline to all clubs the promotion and relegation model for 2019," he said. “We expect there will be increased movement this year.” But as for some north-east clubs competing in Division 2, Bailey said that for the long-term future in the region, there is still some work to do to find the best solution. “We are working with AFL Goldfields and AFL Goulburn Murray to find the best structure for football in that region, which will be finalised over the next six months. We will work with those clubs to identify the best structure for football in the Murrindindi Region,” he said. “There is work being done in regard to whether there can be a standalone league, and that’ll be out of that region, and if not, what will be the best long term fit for each club. “We want these clubs to be sustainable, have increased opportunities to play finals, and compete every year - we need to look at how to do that, so we’ll work with all those clubs individually. “This is a consultative approach with them, they’ll be part of the process - our preference is to create a standalone league where they can compete across the central Goulburn, northeast region.
“What we want to do, is make sure they are sustainable, that they have pathways, and they have the opportunity to have success, and playing finals. “We’re hoping to have an answer on that by the end of the year.” Bailey said that AFL Outer East expects to deliver all aspects of the ‘Future Direction of football and netball’ document by 2021, with the current priority to provide three senior divisions, where clubs find their level in senior football, netball and under 18 football. But being meticulous, and ensuring they don’t do damage to any club by placing them in a division they can’t be successful in, is vitally important moving forward. “Our key is to get the structure right, and to get all the clubs in the right divisions - if we go one up, one down, we don’t want a club languishing at the bottom where they’re not suited. That could do long-term damage,” he said. “We’re seeking feedback on clubs on their current position and what level will provide each club the best chance of building strong, vibrant football netball structures. “But for us, our future direction is set, we are where want to be as a competition, a divisional model in Casey, Yarra Ranges and Cardinia. That allows growth and entry points for new clubs and sustainability within the existing clubs. “We need to be flexible, listen to clubs and move clubs around more than what we would normally do to find the model that works. “Once clubs tell us where they want to be, we will start to move towards that and its on clubs to build and grow within that.” Another major change set to come in as of next year is in the under-18 football model, with the potential for senior sides to not be competing in the same division as their pathway sides. “We are currently seeking feedback for clubs on their preferred model with underage football moving forward,” Bailey said. “Creating competitive underage competitions is a high priority for us. The model used by the EFL and Geelong, where teams are graded, is one we are keen to implement. “The structure for the under-18s will hopefully come out by the end of June this year for 2020, and that may see some changes to the traditional under 18 model of the past. “Under age football and netball continue to be key areas in our restructure.” As for new clubs set to enter AFL Outer East in the future, Bailey said that ensuring the region gets its structure right was the priority for the time being. But he also indicated that Berwick Springs was tracking along well, and is not too far away from being a senior club. “Berwick Springs have done a really good job in developing under 18’s and netball, and by 2021 they will be a senior club. We are hopeful that as early as 2020 they will enter a side(s) at senior level,” he said. “But we’re keen to work with new clubs, and Berwick Springs is a very good start. It is crucial we develop more clubs in the Casey Cardinia region and we will continue to have conversations with clubs, particularly in the South East Juniors around becoming senior clubs. As our competition structure finalises over the next two years, opportunities for existing clubs to join the Outer East competition may emerge. “In the short term, our focus is on getting the structure right. We are confident that as that happens, more opportunities for clubs will develop.” berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Magpies sit pretty on top By Nick Creely OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER DIVISION REVIEW - ROUND 7 Narre Warren is playing nowhere near its best football, but continues to hold sway at the top of the Premier ladder by shaking off every challenge - this time a brave Cranbourne unit at home on Saturday, 14.21 (105) to 8.8 (56). But that’s what the Magpies will be so pleased with at the moment - they are continuing to find ways to win, searching for their right mix while also getting the opportunity to blood youngsters and find players to move them forward as a football club. Premierships are not won in June, but the build up towards finals and cementing a brand of sustainable football is what the home and away season is all about. That’s exactly what the start of the Magpies’ season has been all about. The Magpies set the win up with a dominant first half, but could have put an insurmountable gap on the Eagles had it not been for some inaccurate kicking at goal, scoring 5.15 to 2.3 including a 13-behind second term to take in a five goal lead at the major break. As they have when put under the pump all season, the Eagles did respond with a fourgoal third term, but were outgunned by a clinical Magpie forward line, with the likes of Mitch Cox (two goals), Lachie Benson (two), Stewart Scanlon (two) and Michael Collins (two) inflicting plenty of pain on the visitors, who didn’t have any answers for their class forward of centre. While scoring 21 behinds for the match, in a win that could have nearly tipped three figures if they kicked straight, the Maggies had winners all over the ground - but in particular in the midfield once again - with Brad Scalzo dominant as he continues to build his season, Josh Tonna providing his customary run, Nathan Foote being a force in the stoppages, while Dylan and Ryan Quirk were once again impressive. Emerging forward Kirk Dickson provided a strong target in the absence of Corey Ellison, snagging two majors for the visitors, while Shaun Marusic played his best game of the season. The Magpies’ biggest challenger for top spot at this stage, Berwick, also enjoyed another strong weekend, building on its percentage with a drubbing of a youthful Olinda Ferny Creek at Edwin Flack, 20.14 (134) to 3.8 (26). The Bloods had plenty of inexperience in its line-up, and were taught a valuable lesson from a side that is at the top of its game. Rhys Nisbet’s side were never headed as it strolled to a 20-point quarter time lead, and quickly turned that advantage to 69 at the main break after holding the visitors goalless in the first half. The Bloods were unable to snag a major into the final term and went on to kick a further two more, but the Wickers kept the foot down to deliver in another impressive fourquarter performance, one that sees them just percentage from top-spot. Perennial goal machine Harry Money slotted another five to take his tally to 32 for the season, while Madi Andrews and Lucas Jellyman-Turner ran amok through the midfield for the Wickers. Beaconsfield was another south-east side to fill its boots on the weekend, cementing itself inside the top five with a drubbing over the winless Healesville, 26.19 (175) to 5.7 (37). Leigh McQuillen’s side was in an ominous mood from the outset of its first trip up to Healesville, with a whopping 45 scoring shots in a reminder of just how many attacking options they have. The Eagles got off to the best possible start on the road, completely blitzing the Bloods to surge to a 59-point quarter time lead. With Kyle O’Sullivan (six goals), Damien Johnston (four), Jamie Plumridge (four) and returning big man Scott Meyer (three) making the most of their opportunities up forward, the Eagles gradually built a mammoth lead over the course of the match, eventually running out 138-point winners. As he has all season, Sean Dwyer was once again arguably the best player on the ground, Riley Verbi returned from his Young Guns stint with some venom, while the defence stood up once again, with the Eagles now statistiberwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

The Narre boys belt out the song after defeating Cranbourne at home. 194283 cally the stingiest defence in the competition with an average of just 53.7 pointers per game, just shadowing Berwick in that key area of the game. In the final game of the round, Woori Yallock’s dominant second-half set up a 16-point
win against Upwey Tecoma, 14.16 (100) to 12.12 (84). Upwey got off to a barnstorming six-goal first term to be leading by 19 at the first break and eventually 11 at half-time, but the visitors eventually got the game on their terms, scor-
ing eight goals to three after half-time to win comfortably. For the visitors - who are two games clear in third spot - Kane Thompson and Joel Adams were superb, while Joel Smith had a massive impact on the match with five goals. Thursday, 13 June, 2019
