A father has failed to give way at the state's worst black-spot at Springvale Junction and crashed into a pregnant driver, leading to the death of her unborn daughter, a court has heard. Hameedullah Rezaei, 36, pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving causing serious injury, though he still believed he was not "entirely at fault", the County Court of Victoria was told. He had mistakenly thought he was under the direction of a green arrow when he tried to turn right from Centre Road into Princes Highway about 4pm on Saturday 23 April. He struck and caused severe damage to the front right of an oncoming Yaris hatch. Its driver, 19 weeks pregnant, was travelling under the speed limit and obeying a green light in the opposite direction. Her right shoulder, waist and hips were bruised; she felt her waters break. Several days later, she was induced to deliver her premature daughter. The baby's heart was slow and weak. She did not take a breath and was pronounced dead minutes later. The bereaved mother had recovered physically but not psychologically in the aftermath, the court heard. At his initial police interview, Rezaei claimed the light turned green for him, then the victim's car "jumped out in front of him" with "high speed", Judge Trevor Wraight noted during sentencing on 11 June. "You asserted ... you believed you had a green turning arrow. However it was established in evidence that was not the case. "Despite the complexities of the intersection, this was a right-hand turn with the use of traffic lights and you were required to give way to oncoming traffic." According to VicRoads, the Springvale Junction is the worst blackspot site in Victoria. In the five years up to December 2018, there

were 59 casualty crashes including 20 serious injuries. The "key crash trend" is the two right lanes turning from Centre Road into Princes Highway, as attempted by Rezaei. It has been a factor in 19 crashes in the past five years. Rezaei, married with three children, was an Afghan-born refugee living in Australia on a protection visa. A Shia Muslim Hazara, he fled to Australia by boat after his brother disappeared at the hands of the Taliban. Described by referees as hard-working, respected and caring, Rezaei worked as a casual labourer and mechanic. He had no criminal history, no history of alcohol or drug use or mental health issues - but since the crash he was diagnosed with depression. Judge Wraight said the crash showed that the consequences of not staying alert at a major intersection could be devastating. "The community needs to be sent a message that on busy city roads, drivers must remain alert and comply with road rules." Rezaei hadn’t taken complete responsibility for the crash. He recently told a counsellor that “you did not consider yourself entirely at fault”, Judge Wraight said. Rezaei was sentenced to an 18-month community corrections order, including 60 hours of voluntary work and mental-health treatment. He was disqualified from driving for 18 months. VicRoads metro projects acting director Sharon Patterson said drivers needed to take extra care at the “complex” intersection. “VicRoads is currently developing interim measures to improve safety and traffic flow particularly for traffic turning right from Centre Road into the Princes Highway.” It is investigating the possible ban of the right-hand turn.

Age is no limit for Adrian By Cam Lucadou-Wells What a way to turn 60. In a feat of incredible endurance, Noble Park North's Adrian Bol ran seven beach marathons in seven consecutive days. That's 296 kilometres of running over about 50 hours. Not only that but he completed the challenge in seven states and territories. Meaning that during his precious recovery time between runs, he spent a total 18 hours in a plane. In driving rain, a euphoric Emerson School teacher completed the final leg on his training beach Bonbeach on Wednesday 12 June. His efforts are raising hopefully at least $10,000 for Foodbank - which supplies a weekly breakfast club for up to 20 students at his school. Still on a high the next day, Mr Bol said he'd perhaps defied science. But it showed that with meticulous training and diet, the seemingly impossible can be achieved. "I don't think this has ever been done before. "I found more than I think I had. "Until you think outside the square, you'll never know what you're capable of. "I feel a different person already." For the past 30 years, Mr Bol's run beaches - though usually in spurts of 5-10 kilometres. In preparation for the challenge, he stepped up training for 17 gruelling months. Before school, he'd front for runs at Bonbeach at 3am. He focused on his body being able to recover faster to be able to run marathons after marathons. "At first it was horrendous. I'm not an elite athlete but I was training like one." The hardest of his series of marathons was the first in Darwin.

Adrian Bol muscled up for Foodbank on an incredible run of marathons. "It was the hardest thing I've ever gone through. "And then each marathon takes a toll because you're not recovering fully. You're carrying some of each marathon as you progress. "The mental side kicks in when your body has had enough. "It's just pushing it, going and going and going ... knowing you're doing it for a very good cause, making the world better." Mr Bol hopes that this inspirational effort will leave a legacy of health-mindedness. "I wanted to send a message to get people

inspired to get active, to plan and to set goals just like I've done. "I wanted to show kids and young adults that if I can do it, others can do it too." Mr Bol was born for a battle. As a new-born, he overcame a battle with pneumonia. Then came bronchitis, then asthma. He feels he's still "rehabbing" his body from sports niggles for the past 30 years. "As you get older it's more difficult to do the things you always wanted to do. "But they shouldn't stop you - it's all in the mind."

Adrian Bol and supporters celebrate seven marathons at the finish line at Bonbeach.

IN BRIEF Man charged over violent street attack

Council move to ‘gag’ Cr Kirwan

A Doveton man has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury to a fallen man kicked multiple times in the head in Dandenong. The 47-year-old victim has been placed in a coma in The Alfred hospital's intensive care unit with bleeding on the brain and a broken nose and ribs after the attack about 6.30am on Monday 10 June. He had been walking along Lonsdale Street when he was approached, shoved and had a blanket thrown over his head by his alleged attacker. In the Harley Heaven car park, the victim fell and the offender started kicking him, Greater Dandenong CIU detectives say. As the victim tried to sit up, he was kicked several times in the face with "high force", it is alleged. The accused perpetrator walked away along Lonsdale Street with a female. Witnesses called triple-0 to help the victim. At 9.30pm, Greater Dandenong CIU arrested a 44-year-old Doveton man. He was charged and remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 11 June.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Greater Dandenong councillor has accused colleagues of “gagging themselves” in an attempt to gag him at future council meetings. Cr Matthew Kirwan made the claim during a debate on proposed procedural changes, including the limiting of each councillor to eight minutes of questioning council directors. From the start of his six-year tenure, Cr Kirwan had become renowned for his lengthy, thorough interrogation of council directors. He would often ask follow-up questions for directors to clarify their answers or to respond to each part of his multi-tiered questions. His personal Q&A time often well exceeded eight minutes. “Let’s be honest (it’s) because of me ... asking many tough but important questions responding to the needs of the community,” Cr Kirwan said at a meeting on 11 June. “But what gets even stranger in this quest to gag me from doing my role in an accountable, transparent way is that councillors who support it are gagging themselves. “Preventing their own ability to do their job, bringing up important issues and holding Council officers accountable.” Cr Kirwan said the “regressive” and “timid” document missed the chance to allow members-of-the-public to verbally ask questions at council meetings. It also “explicity” banned online petitions such as from change.org - a move “out of touch with the modern world”, he said. “Change.org have been used by residents particularly in the new estates of Keysborough because they are practical for busy young families.” Cr Sean O’Reilly said the rules established a “sensible limit” to stop time being used up on a “single person’s whim”. “It’s true councillors won’t be able to ask every single question they can think of. “Councillors won’t be gagged. They will

Other changes include shifting public question time - in the form of written submissions - to earlier in the meeting. It will be exhibited for community comment before it’s formally adopted. Mayor Roz Blades said the changes wouldn’t “control or stop people saying whatever they want to say at a council meeting”. She was looking forward to public feedback to the proposed changes. “I’m somebody in favour of community consultation and look forward to what the community comes back and says about it.”

Burglar strikes twice A burglar is believed to have broken into two nearby houses in Noble Park on the same night. A 20-year-old woman was in her Leonard Avenue home alone when the offender broke in through a window and stole a bag about 7.30pm on Friday 31 May. The victim was in her upstairs bedroom when the intruder knocked on her door. She called out and the intruder fled the property. Soon after, the same person is believed to have stolen a large amount of jewellery from a 23-year-old woman's unattended house on Bloomfield Road. He was captured on CCTV footage parking a vehicle outside a block of units on Leonard Avenue. At the time, a lot of people were attending a nearby place of worship, police say. A public survey on the future of Dandenong and Noble Park's pools is coming to an end. Greater Dandenong Council's $67 million draft aquatic strategy proposes to replace the ageing Dandenong Oasis with a cluster of warm-water, learn-to-swim, leisure and 25-metre pools. It would also include a gym and fitness areas, spa, sauna, creche and cafe. Under the strategy, it is designed to complement NPAC's 50-metre outdoor pool in Noble Park.

NPAC will also expand with new indoor leisure and learn-to-swim pools, a gym and a spa and sauna. The key issues raised in the public survey are whether a 25-metre or 50-metre pool is preferred at Dandenong Oasis, and whether to enclose NPAC's outdoor pool. Mayor Roz Blades said the council was open to either option. She said the two pools, though just four kilometres apart, didn't have to be strictly complementary. There could still be some overlap in the types of services offered. "You have to remember in Greater Dande-

A woman walking home from work has been grabbed in a terrifying attack near 35 Robinson Street Dandenong. The 25-year-old had left Dandenong railway station and passed a large group of males in the area about 9.20pm on Sunday 9 June. She told police she sensed someone was following her, then was grabbed "quite violently" on Robinson Street. The male attacker put a hand over her mouth to muffle her screams and dragged her behind a real estate sign, police say. Her attacker, described as wearing a dark jacket and a dark cap, stopped the attack when a car passed the building on the corner of Hemmings and Robinson streets. He fled west on foot on Hemmings Street. Any information to Greater Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Author of the write stuff By Cam Lucadou-Wells 'What does home mean to you' will be the theme for a line-up of rising literary stars appearing in The Dandy Slam. For one of the panelists Marisa Wikramanayake, home certainly figures prominently in her writing. Based in Oakleigh, the versatile freelance editor, author and journalist has set her latest crime fiction work 'Gin & Tonic' in her Sri Lankan homeland. Last summer, she briefly returned to Sri Lanka, penning a piece on its political situation for the South China Morning Post newspaper. At that stage, the Prime Minister had been sacked during a constitutional crisis. The recent Easter bombing atrocities have created a more "confusing" situation, with calls for President Maithripala Sirisena's impeachment. Other officials have been sacked for failing to pass on security warnings that may have averted the attacks that killed 250 worshippers. "The government looks bad in the way it reacted after the news. They didn't seem to care, and the people are angry." At the same time, Muslims have been under threat of reprisals. Some have been forced to close their businesses, which is causing strife in domestic economies. "Everyone is terrified, thinking Oh God, not another war!" Ms Wikramanayake also keeps a close political eye on Australian developments. As a delegate for the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, she's affronted by the recent raids on media by the Australian Federal Police. It's particularly chilling given her former editor Lasantha Wickrematunge was murdered in Sri Lanka a decade ago. "It's very troubling and frustrating to find

Dark files IBAC complaint By Cam Lucadou-Wells In a rare move, a Greater Dandenong councillor has lodged a complaint against the council to the state’s anti-corruption watchdog. At a council meeting on 11 June, Cr Tim Dark said that the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) should look into the “misuse” of council funding for “political purposes”. He claimed that council’s community grants were used to support groups associated with the Australian Labor Party as well as

support events that attack the Federal Government. “What we see is Labor Party councillors supporting Labor Party organisations in return for favours. “I’ve seen pamphlets, flyers, Facebook posts, messages, you name it. If you support the Labor Party, Council will support your organisation.” Part of his complaint is a recent flier for “Friends of Labor” to support a pre-Federal Election fundraiser and volunteer sign-up on 28 April.

The pamphlet states it is “proudly supported” by a “multicultural group” which received “considerable council funding”, Cr Tim Dark said. Cr Dark raised the issue during a council meeting debate into distributing unallocated council funds to refugee aid group, community grants and hall venue grants, and material aid programs. Cr Matthew Kirwan urged Cr Dark should report any cases to IBAC since his allegations were “hurtful” to groups. “Community groups have people of a va-

riety of political persuasions and political beliefs, and I am not aware of any discrimination against any of them.” Cr Dark responded that “this is not a threat”. “I got some information this afternoon that will be forwarded to IBAC straightaway.” Mayor Roz Blades later told Star News she “didn’t know what to make of” the allegations. “In all my years on the municipality and four terms as mayor, that’s the first time I’ve heard of a councillor wanting to complain to IBAC. “I didn’t know what he meant.”

Jemma comes out clean By Brendan Rees When Jemma Attard was a teenager her life spiralled out of control when she regularly used marijuana and GHB. It wasn't until the 21-year-old, formerly of Narre Warren South, found help from Glenn Munso and the Youth You Program in Hallam when she got her life back on track. "I'd been using for about four to five years straight before I got into Glenn's program," she explained. "I ended up in really bad situations with partners with partners and that sort of stuff." Since attending sessions twice a week through the program, Jemma's life has turned around. She has been clean from drugs for the past 12 months, and works full-time at Fountain Gate Hotel. The Youth You Program uses a combination of time in the gym, community engagement and mentoring sessions to help young people get off drugs. "Gym wasn't really my thing, never has been. I was a bit like 'Oh I don't know if this

is going to work.' I ended up loving it," Jemma said. "The people that were there, the groupthey were all like understanding. They understood the situation I was in because they had gone through it themselves. "They weren't like judgemental or anything; they were always there to listen," she said. Prior to the program, Jemma, who now lives in Pakenham, completed Year 12 at Lara Secondary College, where she did a school-based apprenticeship in animal studies while working in a pet shop. From there, she says "Just got mixed up with the wrong crowd and never really did anything about that after I finished school.". Jemma said she also had problems with family and "never really dealt with it and just went off the rails." Looking back at the program, she said "I didn't think that I had that mental strength to do it." "I was proud of myself because I didn't think that I would be able to do it."

100 years ago 19 June 1919 Railway Prosecutions - Travelling without tickets At the Dandenong Police court on Monday the following cases came up for hearing.

Frank Maybury v Wm Quinlivan for having travelled between Sale and Dandenong on February 3 without a ticket. Fined 40/- with 20/- costs. Same v C Headlam, for travelling between Drouin and Dandenong on May 16, in a first class railway carriage, with a second class ticket. Fined 40/- with 7/6 costs. Same v J Batty for travelling without a ticket and assaulting a checker. In the evidence given against Batty (who did Not appear) it was sworn that he had been seen alight from the first class carriage and walk through the

barrier without producing a ticket. He was accosted by the checker for his ticket. He denied travelling by the train. They walked on the platform, and during the argument, Batty produced a ticket but did not let the checker see it. Batty struck the checker, and a scrimmage took place during which the ticket, which the defendant had, was lost. Defendant was taken into the SM's office, and offered the checker £1 to 'square things up' Fined £3, with 7/6 costs.

50 years ago 19 June 1969 Petrol 'War' games Several Dandenong service station proprietors claimed yesterday that many motorists in Dandenong did not know how much they paid for their petrol. They said it was "ridiculous" that Dandenong motorists have to pay .8 of a cent

per gallon more for their petrol when most of it is delivered from an oil depot in Greens Lane. The proprietor of a BP service station in Dandenong said yesterday that until last weekend he was not allowed to sell cut price petrol, as do many other district service stations. However BP gave him permission to sell petrol at five cents per gallon less, but only form a bowser marked "taxi pump."

20 years ago 21 June 1999 Pie maker scores medal win A Keysborough pie maker has won his seventh medal in the 1999 Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition. Ivan's pies in Boileau Street, has won seven medals in as many years for its famous beef pie. This year it was awarded a silver medal out of the 1000 entries Australia wide. On three occasions in 1993, 94 and 96 it has won gold. Asked for the secret to his success, Mr

Ivan Petric said he only used "premium ingredients".

5 years ago 16 June 2014 Shining light of the City My later dear colleague Marg Stork was the consummate journalist ... tenacious, accurate, considerate, dedicated, determined and caring are just some of the words which immediately come to mind when recalling her lifetimes work with and for the people of Dandenong and surrounds. Local brewer savours sweet win in a small street By Danielle Kutchel A small street in Dandenong South's industrial heart might at first seem like an odd place for a craft brewer, but look again and it makes perfect sense - and the scent of beer wafting from 10 Superior Drive is much better that some of the other smells nearby. Looming tall over the factory floor, rows of glistening silver fermenters stand guard over rainbow-coloured cans. And inside the cans are the award-winning liquids that are helping EXIT brewing make its name in the thriving craft beer market. The guys at EXIT are fresh off the back of one of the industry's biggest honours - last month, they claimed the Best Stout trophy for their Milk Stout at the Australian International Beer Awards. The awards are the largest annual beer competition in the world, and co-founder of EXIT, Grum Knight says his team is stoked to have won the trophy. "Taking out a trophy is the ultimate in these

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL awards," he says. Milk Stout also took out a gold medal in the same competition. The winning beer is a little bit different, but ultimately well balanced. Lactose has been added to the stout for sweetness, much like the sugar people add to their morning coffee, Mr Knight explains. "Lactose is a more complex sugar than sucrose or glucose, so it's too complex for the yeast to actually eat and change into alcohol and carbon dioxide. It leaves a residual sweetness in the beer," he says. "With a stout you can get quite an astrin-

gent bitterness off the malt because it's basically burnt which is what gives you some lovely coffee, espresso, dark chocolate flavours, but it can be a little bit too much, so a bit of lactose is ... a nice balance." The Milk Stout is now part of EXIT's core range and in fact was one of the first beers released by the brewery, which was founded in 2014. Bored with their IT desk jobs, Mr Knight and his co-worker Frase Rettie dreamed of channelling their passion for beer into opening a brewery. Being ex-IT workers and with beer being their pathway out of the desk-bound industry, the name EXIT was apt. That dream has paid off and Milk Stout isn't the only EXIT beer to have tickled the judges' taste buds. Their latest beer, a session XPA, also won a gold medal at this year's awards, and they also picked up a silver for their HIPA Juice 2.0, a bronze for their Amber and a bronze for their Saison. Previous years have seen medal wins

Grum Knight with the award-winning Milk Stout and trophy. 194645 too. Their award-winning range is available in watering holes around Melbourne including their very own, Uitgang Bar and Beer Garden in Bridge Road, Richmond.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.” There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer. “That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said. “That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.” He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014. “That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said. Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings. The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up. The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old. He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands. Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business. “I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said. “I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that. “I really enjoyed the community stuff. “Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Angry ex is sent to jail By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has broken in and smashed up his expartner's Dandenong West home and belongings with a baseball bat while her son was asleep inside, a court has heard. The 45-year-old offender was jailed by the Victorian County Court on 13 June for what Judge Susan Pullen described as "most serious and disturbing" offences. His charges included aggravated burglary, criminal damage, contravening a family-violence intervention order and committing an indictable offence on bail. Aggrieved over a VCAT property dispute with his ex, the man broke into the house through the living-room window late on 1 November 2017. The ex-partner was away overseas at the time. In the house was her boyfriend and her son. The boyfriend awoke to the sound of smashing glass. He locked himself in the bedroom after seeing the bat-wielding offender climb the stairs. During the intruder's rampage, he forced open the locked door. The boyfriend used a wardrobe door to keep the door closed while the offender continued to beat and kick at it. Elsewhere in the house, ornaments, a TV and other furniture belonging to the expartner were destroyed. Windows of the boyfriend's car were smashed. The accused was arrested by police at the scene, arguing he only intended to damage the property. Since the invasion, the ex-partner and son

moved home out of fear. Her traumatised boyfriend didn't work for the next four months, shifted interstate and broke up the relationship. Judge Pullen noted that the man was sentenced to a community corrections order by Dandenong Magistrates' Court in August 2016 for assault and breaching a family violence order against the same victim. At the time of his rampage, he was still on that same CCO as well as on bail for driving offences. Born in Iran, the twice-married former refugee was said to have not recovered from a traumatic stay in an Australian detention centre. His mental health was said to have deteriorated in remand since his arrest, the court heard. Judge Pullen however noted that the most recent psychiatric report on the offender was 14 months old and "dated". The offender had yet to take part in longterm programs addressing his violent history, such as anger management and respectful relationship courses, she said. His prospects of rehabilitation were viewed by Judge Pullen with "guarded optimism" as a result. "Should you successfully complete such programs this may be of less concern." The man was jailed for up to three years, four months with a non-parole period of two years, two months. His term included 538 days in pre-sentence remand.

Bypass ‘deathtrap’ warning By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council will lobby the State Government for safety measures such as a red-light speed camera at two "death trap" intersections on Dandenong Bypass. Cr Tim Dark, who initiated the motion for an "urgent review", said residents had reported an alarming number of crashes at the Chapel Road and Perry Road intersections with the bypass in Keysborough. There was a dangerous mix of drivers, some reportedly speeding well above the bypass's 80km/h speed limit and some running the traffic lights. Cr Dark said Keysborough CFA had been called out to 10 crashes in recent times. "It's become a real death trap." In recent weeks, a roadside warning sign with flashing orange lights has been installed on the bypass. It warns of a 'High Risk Area. Police Enforcing Speed'. According to VicRoads, there have been

four serious injury crashes at the Chapel Road junction in the five years up to 30 June 2018. In the same period, there have been three serious injury crashes at the Perry Road intersection. VicRoads is set to raise both locations for consideration for road safety cameras at its next meeting with the Department of Justice and Community Safety. "VicRoads plays an important role in helping the Department of Justice and Community Safety determine where road safety cameras should be located using our data and road management expertise," VicRoads regional acting manager for movement and safety Devjeet Vagel said. Fixed speed camera locations are decided by the Fixed Camera Site Selection Committee, comprising Victoria Police, the Department of Justice and Community Safety, and VicRoads. The committee also receives proposals from the public.

Bollywood hub of Little India faces final curtain

Pools plan in strategy By Andrew Cantwell A new aquatic facility for the Clyde region, updates to Casey RACE and Casey ARC, and a new masterplan for the Doveton pool are all canvassed in Casey City Council’s draft pools strategy for the next 20 years. Casey expects $130 million will be needed over that period to deliver all projects planned. The draft Casey Aquatic Facilities Strategy is now on public exhibition, until early July. A key component of the draft strategy is the development of a masterplan for the Doveton Pool in the Park, with investigation into how best to deliver aquatic education, outdoor water play and multi-use spaces. The outdoor pool, built in 1968, is run seasonally in partnership with Doveton College, and has been the subject of discussions in council over the past few years over its future. The draft strategy provides a figure of $24 million for necessary works to meet expected community needs. Consultations with the community and key stakeholders is already underway, with funding for a masterplan included in this year’s draft capital works program. The big-ticket item in the draft strategy is planning for a new facility around Clyde, to meet the needs of that area’s expected 90,000 residents. The figure suggested here is $73 million for any new aquatic centre. A business case and funding strategy would need to be undertaken to nail down the facili-

ties and cost - and identify funding sources for what is seen as a major future project. Meanwhile, $15.5 million for Casey RACE and $17 million for Casey ARC have been suggested in the draft strategy to deliver additional services and facilities in the city’s most popular existing centres. Consultation involving 1200 survey responses helped inform the draft strategy, with the facilities seen as highly valued and necessary. But there is a concern the current facilities will not be able to cater for the city’s rapid growth. As Casey’s population continues to mushroom - growing from its current 356,000 to over 545,000 by 2041 - the upgrades and new facilities are seen as vital to meeting the future health and fitness, aquatic education, and social needs of the various communities. The current facilities have racked up some impressive figures. In the year 2017-2018, they recorded almost 2 million attendences, hosted 8229 health and fitness members, 6154 ‘learn to swim’ participants, had 2487 aquatic members and 417,302 recreational swimmers. Public submissions on the draft strategy will be reported to a future council meeting.

A hub for Bollywood culture is set to close its doors in the Little India precinct in Dandenong. After 19 years, Baba Home Entertainment with its vast collections of CDs and DVDs has bowed to the power of internet streaming services. “I’m really, really upset,” owner Baba Saheed said. “I loved that shop.” When it opened in 2000, the store hummed with customers. It was a unique offering that tapped into the huge appetite for Bollywood films and music. “It was a super hit,” said owner Baba Saheed. “They just went crazy for DVDs. “In those days, Little India was like the main street of Dandenong. There was more street parking - it was free and there were lots of it.” The business hit a road hump a decade ago when the Revitalising Central Dandenong works effectively shut down the precinct for several years. Then Mr Saheed’s customers swapped to video and music streamed online. His last-ditch bid to revive his shop with a herbal shisha lounge was rejected by Greater Dandenong Council due to public-health concerns in March. “They were saying that shisha was worse than alcohol and cigarettes, yet there’s venues everywhere. “I don’t know how the other four or five venues in Greater Dandenong got their licences.” Ever the entrepreneur, Mr Saheed’s next business venture is a food truck ‘Baba’s Kebabs’. “They are chicken kebabs with a bit of Baba

Jail term for estate agent By Jessica Anstice The face behind a real estate LJ Hooker’s franchise, Judy Nguyen, has been jailed for 20 months after she deceived property buyers in areas including Dandenong. The 44-year-old former director oversaw branches in Melbourne’s East including Keysborough. She was sentenced in the County Court of Victoria to 11 charges and fined $1500 on Tuesday 11 June after stealing more than $800,000 in deposits from her clients.

The 11 counts related to sales in Glen Waverley, Deer Park, Caroline Springs, Narre Warren, Berwick, Dandenong, Docklands and Parkdale. Ms Nguyen’s husband and business partner, Joseph Ngo, was jailed in March last year for initiating and conducting the scheme. Mr Ngo was sentenced to five years imprisonment, three of those years being without parole. During the court sentencing Judge Michael Bourke said Ms Nguyen’s wrongful conversion

scheme had some “sophistication” to it and caused anxiety and stress for the many affected vendors. He said it was “dishonest behaviour and ultimately the aim was your (Ms Nguyen’s) benefit.” Real Estate Institution of Victoria vice president Leah Calnan said she is “pleased the courts have prosecuted the parties accordingly”. “It’s a substantial breach of trust,” Ms Calnan said.

“Its important real estate agents have a high level of integrity and a high trust component when dealing with the public, so it’s disappointing to see this behaviour arise.” She will be eligible for parole in eight months. Ms Nguyen was a franchisee of the LJ Hooker office in Glen Waverley and had branches in Keysborough, Box Hill, Mount Waverley, Doncaster and Burwood. She had no involement with offices in the Casey and Cardinia region.

Roz Blades addresses the mayoral forum into social housing in Greater Dandenong. 194365 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades has hosted a forum into increasing social housing in Victoria's highest homeless hotspot. The 7 June mayoral forum sought solutions from community housing providers, council officers, peak housing bodies and State and Federal MPs. Housing assistance service WAYSS presented its list of solutions to the vexing and fundamental problem. "We know the longer a person is homeless the more support they will need to sustain a successful tenancy," a spokesperson said. "We know that the key to ending the housing and homelessness crisis is to increase access to affordable rental accommodation and affordable, safe and secure social housing with one-to-one wrap-around support services." Solutions included more surplus government land being released for social housing, and mandatory 10-20 per cent social housing as part of new housing developments. Low-cost government loans could also be offered to community housing associations to buy more housing stock, and vacant spaces above shops could be also utilised.

There was also a need to identify the unmet housing need for singles, couples and families, according to WAYSS. "Currently single people under 55 are one of the largest age-groups on the housing waitlist due to a lack of one-bedroom housing." Cr Blades said the larger-than-expected forum turnout had resolved to form a "fullyfledged taskforce". "The mood in the room was very positive in how to address the issue. "We focused on how we could work together and try to find solutions." Greater Dandenong community services director Martin Fidler said the forum was an "important milestone" in bringing key representatives together in the one place. "With a diverse range of housing needs in our municipality, a key learning from the forum was the need for collaboration, planning, innovation and advocacy to address the current and future housing demands." Mr Fidler said the council was committed to increasing social housing options, including more affordable housing, in the municipality.

Take a bite out of illness The arrival of June marks bowel cancer month, an initiative of Bowel Cancer Australia that is proudly supported by St John of God Berwick Hospital each year. Through its annual Red Apple Day June 19, Bowel Cancer Australia encourages Australians to raise awareness for bowel cancer by purchasing a Bowel Cancer Awareness Ribbon as well as participate in apple-themed fundraising activities. Thanks to the generous donation of fresh apples from local growers Montague Fresh and Bonview Orchards, St John of God holds a fundraising day each year by encouraging visitors and caregivers to purchase a fresh apple in exchange for a generous gold coin donation. The fundraiser raises funds for Bowel Cancer Australia and also promotes awareness around the issue of bowel cancer and how critical early detection is in effective and successful treatment. Although bowel cancer is one of the most treatable types of cancer with 90 per cent of cases being curable if caught early enough, it still continues to be one of our biggest killers claiming the lives of 80 Australians each week due to low early detection rates. Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, affects both men and women equally and isn't usually a result of being genetically inherited. With detection of bowel cancer rising sharply over the age of 50, Bowel Cancer Australia recommends that all people between the ages of 50 and 74 be screened for bowel cancer every one to two years. The testing for bowel cancer is free and non-invasive and can be done it home by screening for blood in the faeces, and is recommended for those considered low-risk who have exhibited no warning signs and have no

Light shone on the past A re-enacted Magic Lantern show at Heritage Hill is a rare chance to savour Victorian-era entertainment. The show's presenter Ian Edwards will light up a large mahogany-cased 'Newton' biunial lantern and present slides from photographers in Australia's Colonial period. The equipment and slides have been exhibited by three generations of Dr Edwards's family, starting from 1898 with Reverend Percy Edwards in Hastings and then in the 1940s with son Longley. The Edwards archive combines handpainted humorous mechanical story-slides and brash Victorian adverts for an authentic look back on the past. Dr Edwards, a retired archaeologist, will be accompanied in the show by his wife Margery playing music on her German 'Hohner' harmonica.

One important difference from yesteryear is that the lantern is lit by a safe electrical system. In Victorian times, they were typically illuminated by naked flames from oil lamps or acetylene gas. "The newspaper 'stories of the day' of fires and explosions during early lantern shows, are many and quite dramatic," Dr Edwards said. Magic lanterns were developed in the 17th century. When combined with the invention of photography, the lanterns became popular entertainment in the Victorian era. Staging depictions of world events on 12foot screens, the lanterns are regarded as the forerunner of 'newsreels' and 'movies'. The free show is on 27 June, 4.30pm at Heritage Hill Museum, 66 McCrae Street, Dandenong.

ON THE COVER

SOAK UP THE TRANQUILITY RAMLEGH SPRINGS is a high-quality residential community located in the gently undulating landscape of Clyde North. Carefully planned to ensure a liveable, walkable and vibrant local neighbourhood, there are few land estates in Clyde North that can boast the current and future amenity that Ramlegh Springs offers. The signature feature of Ramlegh Springs is the open space of its central wetlands. Making a bold and beautiful entry statement; the Ramlegh Springs wetlands will provide residents with a tranquil setting where meandering boardwalks and nature trails link to water bodies of around nine hectares of open space. Beyond the wetlands, there are also two signature parkland spaces, sports grounds, a brand new YMCA Early Learning Centre and a Kingswim Learn To Swim School, both of which opened in early 2019. Ramlegh Springs also features a proposed future town centre, which will provide everyday convenience to residents, as well as a proposed primary school (with State Government funding recently announced). Works are now also underway on the Ramlegh Family Community Centre. Due to complete in March 2020, this council operated facility will provide maternal health,

kindergarten services, community rooms and a community kitchen for use by the residents of Ramlegh Springs and to those in the neighbouring areas. If you are looking for land, Ramlegh Springs has plenty to offer, from low maintenance home sites in quiet tree-lined streets to more significant home sites suitable for growing families. There’s even a limited release of premium sites enjoying valuable views of parklands and the central waterways. Ramlegh Springs also offers townhouses and a selection of pre-priced house and land packages especially prepared by a select group of Melbourne’s leading builders, helping to make the purchase, design and construction process at Ramlegh Springs even easier. However, if you are thinking of buying at Ramlegh Springs, then you will need to get moving as final land stages within this sought after community are now selling! Land is priced from $200,000, townhomes from $409,000 and house and land from $440,550. Visit ramleghspings.com.au or phone 03 9684 8144. The sales office is on Pattersons Road, Clyde North and is open seven days. ●

Auslan ‘sticks’ up a sign Wallara Australia's TV school has helped create a pioneering Auslan learning resource on a USB stick. The Wallara TV School of Media teamed with The Auslan Company to launch the accessible sign-language resources in Dandenong on 3 June. USB kits for babies and their families, child care centres and beginners have been created, as well as one for a general audience. The Wallara TV School of Media trains people of different abilities to produce videos and use social media to promote inclusion. As part of the project, its three students worked on 50 training videos, recording 850 Auslan signs. Each sign was repeated twice - once slowly and the second time in actual speed with expression. Wallara TV student Ben van Raay said he enjoyed and learnt a lot from the project.

"I love the fact that this resource will empower people to be more inclusive." Bella Firth, also of Wallara TV, helped design the titles and templates that were compatible with The Auslan Company branding. The Auslan Company was founded 15 years ago by Darren Roberts, a deaf man who uses Auslan to communicate. "Never before has there been a unique Auslan learning resource on a USB in Australia," Mr Roberts said. It made learning possible on TVs, computers and other devices at home, work or abroad. "You can take your time watching and learning, repeat the process until you can sign all the signs naturally without thinking," Mr Roberts said. "Now, there's no excuse for anyone in remote and rural Australia and in the cities not to learn Auslan."

The Jobs Victoria Community Traineeship Pilot Program is training 200 young people in high-unemployment areas such as Dandenong, Broadmeadows and Bendigo. The Sun is rising for Mitch By Nick Creely Whether it's 2000 kilometres away in the midst of training at Metricon Stadium. or bursting through the stoppages at Shepley Oval, Mitch Riordan is in his element at the elite level. The new Gold Coast Sun has done it the hard way, with injuries - and self-doubt - cruelling his draft year in 2018, but he didn't give up. A Beaconsfield boy and Dandenong Stingray product, Riordan's dream came to fruition in the AFL's 2019 Mid-Season Draft, held on 27 May after Round 10 of the AFL season, with the midfielder's name called out by the Suns, a moment he will savour forever. His journey is now beginning, and while he wants to make his mark at the highest level, understands he has a long-road ahead of him as he looks to acclimatise himself to his new surroundings. "Every day is kind of getting better, I'm starting to settle in and get familiar with how everything works - the last week was kind of tough, everything was going so fast and it was hard to stop and just settle down, but it's been really good," he said. "The thing up here is to just ask questions, so I've been really open with everyone, and that's made it a lot easier - I've been able to communicate and when I have questions, they're really accommodating with the answers. "That's been the biggest thing - I've been able to get out of my comfort zone a little bit, but you have to show a little bit and ask questions, and they'll help you out with the rest." Riordan said that the draft night was a bit of a "blur", with the excitement reverberating in his family, and admitted he had absolutely no idea where, or if he'd end up anywhere. "I didn't know anything until the night, so it made it a bit worse - you never know, but I did get some interest, however you never really know," he said. "Everyone from the family couldn't control their emotions, it was a good time - Dad was really proud, and apparently wore his Gold Coast hat to training, and they all knew it was a goal of mine, so it was really cool." Another fond of memory of Riordan's was a call from Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew shortly after officially joining the club, with the youngster saying he has made an instant impact on him since moving north.

Former Dandenong Stingray, Mitch Riordan recently began his journey in the AFL with the Gold Coast Suns. Picture: COURTESY OF THE GOLD COAST SUNS "He called me draft night and I was a bit all over the joint," he said. "He's so supportive, and really positive about what we do well, and he mostly focuses on the positives, and as long as the effort is there, he's really happy. "He's been a positive role-model for everyone at the club - all of it's been really positive

so far." It was only a matter of weeks ago that Riordan lined up for the Stingrays as a top-ager after being a strong contributor in their 2018 TAC Cup premiership. But, life has changed in an instant; he's now a fully-fledged AFL player who has found another footballing family. "When I first came I didn't kind of believe it

all, but the first thing that stuck out to me was having my name on a locker, all this free gear and the training, and everyone is just really nice and accommodating, and asking all these questions," he said. "Everything changes, the routine you have back home with under-18 football is nothing like up here. "It's great that everyone cares, it's like you're being brought into the family - it's been an awesome experience so far." While his serious hamstring injury last year put a dent in his draft hopes - and a dream he's had his whole footballing life - Riordan was able to get past his self-doubt, one that made him question whether he wanted to keep pushing, with the help of those closest around him. "I have to owe that to those around me, my family, coaches, and stuff like that," he said. "Last year was really tough with the injury, and there were times where I thought whether it was for me, and they were all just really supportive. "I think having a proper break from footy and just re-setting really helped me, and it helped me attack 2019. "My family's been massive for me, and it's made it a lot easier in rehab knowing I'm not alone - they've been paramount for me." Riordan also owes a lot to two clubs that have helped him to succeed, the Dandenong Stingrays and the Beaconsfield Football Club, who have played an integral part in shaping him as not only a footballer, but a human being. "I've been there for a while (at the Stingrays), and they just set up to succeed," he said. "It's a really, really good program and Flano (Darren Flanigan) coming in this year and as a 19-year-old made it a lot easier, and Coxy (Nick Cox) has also been massive for me with his honesty, and the whole group, it's a special place, and I'll certainly miss it. "And as a junior (at Beaconsfield), you play with your mates, and footy became really competitive around 14, 15 and I have made mates for life in junior footy. "There's a tight-knit group of boys that I still hang out with (at Beaconsfield), and to share those memories with them is what you play for."

A classic win for Dandenong on the national stage By Hayley Wildes The National Junior Classic is one of the most prestigious and hard-fought junior basketball tournaments in the nation. Over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, the very best junior teams from across Australia descended on Dandenong Basketball Stadium and the State Basketball Centre for their shot at the glory. The under-16 girls from Dandenong headed into the tournament with a clear goal in mind; being crowned champions, and after a gruelling three-day run they completed their goal in resounding fashion. Just playing six games in three days is brutally tough, so to perform as well as they did - going through the tournament undefeated - truly proved the team’s standing among the best in the country. It wasn’t always easy. In its second game, a clutch Nyadiew Puoch bucket with just seconds remaining saw Dandenong claim a twopoint win, 53-51, over the Sydney Comets in thrilling fashion. As coach Lloyd Klaman explained, that game served as a reminder to the team that every game must be played on its merits. “We had a tough game against Sydney where we just struggled - I thought we came out a little bit over-confident,” Klaman said. “That was kind of a wake-up call for us and after that we played a lot better.” And speaking on that game-winning bucket, Klaman had nothing but praise for Puoch. “We called a time-out, took the ball on the sideline with six seconds to go and Nyadiew dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

got the ball, made a move - and actually got fouled on the shot as well - but made the bucket with three seconds remaining to seal the game for us,” he said. “Nyadiew was outstanding and she’s been outstanding all year - she’s tall, athletic and a really good kid who’s going to go far. “Dallas Loughridge, who won the tournament MVP, was another one - she’s often the smallest player on the court. “She’s the point guard, but she can score, defend and she’s probably the toughest kid on the floor; she’s really hard-nosed.” Being hard-nosed and having a desire to defend and compete are qualities that Klaman loves to see from his team and it was these qualities that ultimately led this Rangers squad to great things. “They play hard for each other and they’re a really tight-knit group, but defensively we’re just really tough,” he said. “The big thing is that we just want to play hard for each other, enjoy each other’s success and defend. “We know we’re not going to be able to shoot well every night, but we know we can defend well every night.” The grand final against Nunawading was proof that Dandenong’s defence is its real strength. Holding that Spectres to just 42 points saw the Rangers come away with a strong 13-point win as centre Myah Healey top-scored with 15 points. Having added a National Junior Classic title to their list of achievements, which also

The Dandenong Rangers under-16 girls were crowned National Junior Classic champions. Picture: COURTESY OF BASKETBALL VICTORIA includes an Eltham Dandenong Junior Basketball Tournament title, the under-16 girls from Dandenong have another massive accomplishment on their mind; Champions of the Victorian Championship (VC) division of the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL). “When we sat down at the start of the season we had three real goals; we wanted to win the Eltham tournament, which is basically the biggest tournament in the southern hemisphere with 100 teams in our age group, we wanted to win the National Junior Classic and

we wanted to win the VC of the VJBL,” he said. “We’ve ticked two of those boxes and we’ve got one more to go, but that’s going to be hard; everyone is gunning for us. “We get everybody’s best game each week, which I think is good for the kids - they get that challenge every Friday night.” This talented Dandenong squad has handled every challenge that has come their way so far and you can be sure they’ll give it their all in their quest for the trifecta. Dandy’s double heartache By Hayley Wildes To say those who ventured to Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night were treated to some classic basketball would be a huge understatement. The Rangers men’s and women’s NBL1 teams took on the Southern Sabres and both games were incredible spectacles. In the first game, the women - who had just eight players in uniform, compared to 11 for the Sabres - fought tooth and nail in a fiery clash. Centre Colleen Planeta (20 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists) kept the Rangers in the game in the first half. Unfortunately for the Rangers, just as Rosie Fadljevic (12 points, 4/4 3FG and 7 rebounds) was really starting to feel it halfway through the third quarter, she landed on an opponent’s foot on a made three-point shot and had to leave the game writhing in pain. She wouldn’t return, and with that the Rangers had just two players on the bench for the remainder of the game. Dandenong didn’t back down, though, and in a back-and-forth clash, the Rangers found themselves down by two points, 68-66, with 15 seconds remaining. It was set-up for the Rangers to go for the win and out of the timeout Aimie Clydesdale (16 points) drained a massive triple with just 1.1 seconds on the clock. It looked to have won the game for Dandenong, but in an incredible final second, the Sabres’ Ella Batish drained the game-winning lay-up as time expired. The heartbreaking 70-69 loss saw the Rangers fall to 9-5 on the season. While that game was an instant classic, the men’s clash was just as enthralling. In a high-scoring, breathtaking game, the Rangers and Sabres played out a double overtime thriller that had to be seen to be believed. Trailing by 15 points at the final break, the

Rangers had their work cut out for them down the stretch, but the fans could sense their belief and trust in one another as they slowly but surely chipped away at the deficit. team with infectious energy, the Rangers never gave up. At the end of regulation, scores were tied 109-109. The first overtime period saw the Sabres jump out to an early lead but when Melbourne United star Dave Barlow fouled out, the Rangers came again and levelled things up with a

Kenyon bucket to take the game to a second overtime. With everything on the line and bodies tiring - along with Lucas Barker (22 points, 13 assists and 6 rebounds) sitting out the second overtime period with an ankle injury - the Sabres took over down the stretch to complete a hard-fought 138-130 win.

Dees destroyed by the brutal Burras By Hayley Wildes

In Division 2 of the Southern Football League on Saturday, the top-of-the-table clash between Springvale Districts and Keysborough yielded an incredible result. The crowd in attendance was hoping for a classic between the two teams that had only suffered one loss each heading into the game, but Keysborough had other ideas. The Burras went into Springvale Reserve and completely embarrassed the Dees with composure, class and a dominance across the board that would usually be reserved for a match between an undefeated team and a winless side. Keysborough’s Cory Hargreaves (two goals) got scoring underway with a classy snap less than one minute into the game and it was a sign of things to come. The Burras’ forwards were just too strong, led by Tim Werner (four goals) and Matt Car-

nelley (three goals), and the midfield dominance was easy to see as Riet Pal (three goals) and Ryan Goodes ran riot in dynamic performances. As Springvale Districts began to lose hope of a win, undisciplined play snuck into their game - highlighted by George Angelopoulos giving away a 100-metre penalty that resulted in a second quarter Ryan Goodes goal. The half-time score line was a whopping 12.6 (78) to 0.3 (3) and the Burras weren’t done yet. Springvale Districts did lift its workrate in the third quarter and put on three goals, but the fourth quarter produced more Keysborough dominance as the Burras eventually ran out 106-point winners, 21.12 (138) to 4.8 (32). Keysborough sits atop the ladder with an 8-1 record. Meanwhile, in the Premier Division of the Eastern Football League, Rowville made it four wins on the trot with a comprehensive win

over Blackburn. Both teams entered the day with just two losses to their names, but the Hawks sent a message to the rest of the league that they look ready to challenge at the business end of the season. It was a tight first half as the Panthers managed to stay with the Hawks to trail by just nine points at the main break, but Rowville upped its intensity in the second half to run away with the win. The might of Hawk Riley D’Arcy (five goals) up forward was too much as he dominated proceedings inside the forward 50 and made the Panthers pay at every opportunity. With D’Arcy firing, it was the likes of Aaron Bond and Alex Frawley across the ground who ensured the Hawks claimed a comfortable win, 13.13 (91) to 7.11 (53). The win has the Hawks boasting a 7-2 record to sit third on the ladder after nine rounds.
