Robust House a safe haven A new Robust Home in Cranbourne will provide a safe and secure haven for residents with high complex needs. The house, which was officially opened by City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon, has been purpose-built with a number of special features, including reinforced walls, individually decorated studio bedrooms for residents and a backyard complete with sensory inclusions like secured artificial grass, a nest swing and outdoor shower. It's the culmination of years of work by Anna Fleming, director of Purposed Housing Australia, and her team. Turn to page three for more details.

Sparking change Residents are being asked to think twice before throwing that old mobile phone in the bin, ahead of the state government's ban on e-waste entering landfill. The ban, which comes into effect on 1 July, means that any item with a plug, battery or cord will no longer be able to be put in kerbside bins, and must instead be dropped at a designated e-waste drop off point. Drop-off points are dotted around the state.

The City of Casey's manager, waste and landfill management, said the council supports the initiative to minimise the amount of e-waste going to landfill and reminded residents to remove batteries from e-waste before disposing of it. The manager said there were a number of drop-off locations available, including Outlook in Hampton Park, Future Recycling Transfer Station in Pakenham or Frankston Recycling and Recovery Centre.

The council collects batteries, mobile phones, DVD's, tapes, videos and CDs at its customer service centres in Cranbourne and at Bunjil Place. A full list of how to dispose of waste in the City of Casey is available at casey.vic.gov.au/ what-we-can-cant-collect. Officeworks stores are also able to collect mobile phones, ink cartridges and IT waste items. E-waste includes old mobile phones, com-

puters, audio devices, refrigerators and other white goods, hair dryers, TVs, heaters and airconditioners. The amount of e-waste is growing three times faster than the rate of standard municipal waste and contains potentially hazardous and valuable materials. The ban will ensure valuable materials left inside e-waste can be safely recovered and reused, while reducing the damage electronic items can have on the environment and human health.

IN BRIEF Budget approved

Robust House is a ‘dream come true’

Casey City Council’s record budget of over half-a-billion dollars was approved at Tuesday night’s council meeting, with just a few administrative changes. None of the 12 submissions from the public and local groups were successful in altering the bottom line. Three of those submissions were put in by supporters of the Casey Little Athletics Club, which meets at Berwick’s Edwin Flack Reserve, seeking upgrades to the facilities there. Casey has allowed for a masterplan process for the reserve in the coming year, which will inform budget allocations over the next few years.

By Danielle Kutchel A new house in Cranbourne promises to provide dignity and security for residents with a disability. The Robust Home has been purpose-built for its residents and is the end result of years of planning by Purposed Housing Australia and the ONCALL Group. The home is packed with unique features to meet challenging behaviours from residents, including reinforced walls, solid doors set into steel frames, high ceilings, high set windows with external shutters, and steel-framed leather furniture for easy cleaning. Each client will have their own studio bedroom and ensuite, decorated to their tastes. The house includes a number of sensory and visual features too, including a stunning mural along the kitchen wall and an outdoor shower in the backyard. Anna Fleming, director of Purposed Housing, said it had long been her dream to provide this type of house for her clients. She and her husband have worked in the disability sector for more than 40 years, and from their experience knew what sort of space was needed for residents with high complex needs. "We didn't want anything clinical; we wanted it to be very homey, very warm, very inviting, with lots of sensory and interactive features that would assist the men to be as independent as possible," she explained. "We wanted it to feel like a home that they would love coming home to and their families would be able to come and enjoy. What we're trying to do is encourage the families to feel part of the home; they can have a barbecue outside and have their family celebrations here." Robert Caulfield, managing director of Caulfield Krivanek Architecture which worked with Ms Fleming to design the house, said they had to negotiate some complex regulations to build the house. "It was like a maze of regulations and peo-

Land of plenty If you thought your rates were high, hold on to your hats. A handful of documents were approved with the budget papers, including a list of culture and recreation land attracting rates. Highest on the list of rates contributors were facilities in some of the high-growth areas: the Cranbourne Country Club, on Glasscocks Road, with a whopping $57,864 rates bill; Oakwood Riding School, on Smiths Lane at Clyde North, with a sizeable $40,000 bill and the Cranbourne Training Complex, on Ballarto Road, at $34,000.

"We didn't want people going past saying, 'that's where the disabled people live'; we wanted it to look like any other house from the street." City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon was present when ground was broken on the house last year, and cut the ribbon at its official opening this month. She said she was pleased to see the way the project had come together. "The very fact that they're giving dignity and respect to people with a disability, and we're also bringing comfort to their parents and carers who want to know what happens to

their child when they're no longer here. This is their forever home - how fantastic," she said. She added that the council is starting planning for similar builds into the future, including looking into how allowances can be made in building regulations to allow for better use of space for residents with a disability. Faizal Izzedeen, whose son Shiraz will be one of the new residents, said the house had lifted a weight of worry from his shoulders. "One of the most important worries for a parent of a child with disability is trying to get them set up for their future for the rest of their lives. In the case of Shiraz, finding him accommodation was not easy. "They've done a fantastic job here, it's a dream come true."

Rusciano captivates Fountain Gate By Danielle Kutchel More than 70 guests packed a foyer in Fountain Gate shopping centre recently to hear from comedian and broadcaster Emelia Rusciano. Ms Rusciano was at the centre as part of the Westfield Women in Conversation event series. Michelle Clarkson, Westfield regional brand experience manager Victoria, said the event tied in with this year's theme of 'change'. "We want to provide hundreds of women with some me time and some time out so they

can hear how some of our most inspiring ladies have found liberation through change in the face of adversity. Life doesn't always go to plan, and it can be quite inspiring to hear how others have faced challenges," she explained. She said Ms Rusciano captivated the room for the full one-and-a-half hour conversation with host Jamila Rizvi, which was wide-ranging and intimate. "The discussion was around how her life didn't go to her original plan but how she's rolled with that, built an amazing career, and

how there can be joy in that chaos even when things don't go to plan because the journey's different for everyone," Ms Clarkson said. While 70 people had booked tickets, others crammed the foyer to hear more, which Ms Clarkson said showed the demand for these types of events. "Being a bit away from the city, we want to make sure we can bring those unique experiences to our local customers and share in creating those successes whether in their personal life or careers," she said.

Cr Gary Rowe, fresh back from a Smart Cities visit to the US, was almost over exuberant about the possibilities for the council, residents and the business community in smart use of ‘big data’. So exuberant, his time to speak had to be extended a few times - and he still didn’t get to speak to all his notes. Cr Rowe empasised the human element of new technologies - that they should serve the communities’ interests - if they were to be useful. As Casey moves further along the Smart Cities path, this element must be front and centre, he indicated, in order to support the council’s aspiration of the being the most liveable city is Australia.

In the zone Passed without comment was an amendment to the planning scheme (C231) that would allow land at Manuka Road, Berwick, for residential subdivision. The four large blocks involved include the former Clover Cottage restaurant, with its renowned heritage gardens. Parts of three of the blocks, that lay outside the Urban Growth Boundary, are marked to be acquired for conservation purposes. Heritage overlays affecting Clover Cottage and the neighboring ‘Minard’ property are also to be updated.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Jack Hines from Pakenham

What is something most people don’t know about you? I am retired, happily married and a frustrated Melbourne Demons supporter. What’s the best thing about living in Pakenham? The best thing about living in Pakenham is where we are in the Main Street Village. It has fantastic facilities, a great community and all within a short walk to shops, doctors, casual dining and so much more. Favourite holiday spot in Australia? That would have to be Kakadu in the NT. We were up there earlier on this year and the vast beauty of the landscape, countless waterfalls and the incredible wildlife makes this place and must do on your bucket list. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? If I was the PM for the day I would take a leaf out of big Clive Palmer’s book of election promises and give all pensioner’s a big increase. What is your favorite book? It is hard to identify just one - but any of the James Patterson or David Baldacci books are always great reads. At school I… Was a bit of a “rebel without a cause”, wagging classes and getting caught smoking and just being a disruptive student. I am now a reformed smoker and deeply regret the lack of respect given to those poor teachers. What’s your favourite movie? My favourite movie would have to be shared between Bohemian Rhapsody and The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas. Both these movies left me with searching around for tissues at the end. Great stories and very well portrayed. What is your favourite sporting moment of all time? That would have to be Australia 2 winning the unwinnable America’s Cup.

Jack Hines loves living in Main Street Village in Pakenham. 194610 Which six guests - dead or alive - would you invite to dinner? My six dinner guests would be Elvis Presley, Tina Turner, Weary Dunlop, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Father Brosnan. All have seen the world from one extreme to the other - from personal pain and suffering

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

through their lives and that of others to seeing the world in a better place. What’s the best concert you’ve been to? That would have to be Tina Turner from the front row at the Melbourne Tennis Centre. What an energetic performer; her seemingly endless energy made it a true night to remember.

THREE … local playgrounds to enjoy

1

Pioneers Park - Located on the site of the old Berwick Primary School, Pioneers Park has been a source of enjoyment for local kids for seven years. There’s a cafe on site too for parents to relax while the kids play.

2

Megasaurus Park - This Cranbourne East secret is one for the older kids. If you like Ninja Warrior and dinosaurs, you won’t be disappointed. The flying fox is a standout for young and old alike.

3

Casey Central Park - Race the kids to the top of the mountain for pretty views out over the park. This park is good for climbers, with a variety of equipment for both big and small kids.

Students share hopes By Danielle Kutchel Imagine you've been told you need to leave your home and everything you know behind to start a new life in another country on the other side of the world. You've got just a few minutes to pack your most treasured possessions. But what would you take, and what would you be forced to leave behind? A live art exhibition at Bunjil Place sought to answer that question by letting visitors into the hearts and minds of people who have been displaced. The exhibition was named Bukjeh, the Arabic word for the bundles of belongings that refugees carry with them, and ran from June 14 to 15. It featured stories of migration, told by those who have been displaced through spoken word, music, songs, visual arts and language. Among those sharing their stories were students from Hampton Park Secondary College

who provided poetry, drama and artwork. The organisers of Bukjeh ran poetry and art workshops at the school with interested students. The poems were recorded to be played during the exhibition. Some of the poems were in the students' first language, like Tagalog or Dari. A group of Islander students from the school also performed a song of their own writing. The college has a high percentage of students from an immigrant or refugee background. English teacher Geoff Shinkfield said the school encouraged students to take part and share their stories. "We invited anyone who came from another country to be involved in it. There are a lot of good poets and a lot of good artists among these kids and I thought they did a great job." Hampton Park Secondary College students shared their stories as part of Bukjeh, an exhibition at Bunjil Place.

Footy family rallies for one of their own By Danielle Kutchel The Fountain Gate Junior Football Club community has rallied to support a new recruit facing tragic circumstances. On Friday 7 June, the club hosted its annual Ross Weeding Cup and donated all funds raised on the night to under-13s player Coren Giliam and his sister Taylenn, who lost their mum, Susan, in January. Approximately 230 people took the time to come down to Max Pawsey Reserve on the night, with rival football clubs, interleague football coaches, school friends, and people who have no connection to the club stopping

The whole community came out to support the Giliam family through the fundraising match. by to donate and help out. The club hosted raffles, sold auction items, canteen food and alcohol over the bar, and took donations throughout the evening.

Club president Andrew Johnston raised $1,000 alone after shaving his questionable mohawk. Zagames Berwick also donated $1,000 to the cause, and local AFL footballer Toby Mclean donated his very own game jumper signed by the entire Western Bulldogs FC. Mr Johnston said the community has done everything they can to help the family through their time of grief. "It was a night of teamwork and love that dictated such a positive end result," he said. The under 13s team trumped the Parents and Coaches on the night in a match that was blanketed in winter fog. There was not a dry eye to be seen in the club

rooms as funds raised totalled above $7,000. "It has blown our minds, the extreme levels of community spirit that were felt across the rooms as we paid tribute to an incredible woman," Mr Johnston said. "Many hands made lights beam on the night. "It was an incredible night that showed AFL is so much more than footy. It's family," Mr Johnston said. The club has set up an account to support the family and is accepting donations from the wider community. Anyone who wishes to donate should contact the Fountain Gate Junior Football Club.

I think it's a great idea that Star News has given the mayor of Casey the chance to provide the broader community with information and clarification about council’s work and its policies in future. But how will the mayor of Casey, Amanda Stapledon define exactly what is newsworthy and what isn’t? What value will her column be if we are none the wiser about important decisions that remain hidden behind secrecy? For example, questions to Casey’s CEO

194688

Glenn Patterson about the Tulliallan land Tussle between council and developer Konann Pty Ltd remain unanswered. Such as, why wasn’t a Section 173 contract signed and who allowed it to be waivered? This will cost Casey ratepayers VCAT legal fees at the very least and potentially millions in any settlement with the developer. Further, will the mayor now please inform us how much her CEO Glenn Patterson will be paid by ratepayers? Why the secrecy please? Also Casey council’s “City News“ magazine, with its the mayor’s column,, and Casey’s website, have had nothing to

Efforts to raise this questions on council at Public Question Time have only met with censorship from Casey’s governance office and hostility from Casey’s mayor Amanda Stapledon to date.

On Monday 17 June, Cranbourne Star News posted an article about the growth rate of Casey city, meaning the municipality could run out of available residential and commercial land earlier than expected. Here is how our readers reacted online: TK Silva: First fix ALL highways/roads leading into Cranbourne before you develop anymore land! INFRASTRUCTURE BEFORE LAND! Gabriele Frenkel: How about better roads, hospitals and facilities first? Felicity Hymers: We don't need more people living out here. You've already overpopulated the city of Casey and have done it by making sure everyone basically lives on top of one another. Bigger blocks would have been smart. But that doesn't suit your $$ in your pocket. Rip off blocks for no room for people to have decent sized backyards anymore. I can't wait to move out of here back up to the country. Renee Charlize Newbury: Entire area being destroyed by greedy over development. Mark Mathews: Good no more... until they fix the other problems first.

Urgent call for land plans By Andrew Cantwell Casey City’s ‘astronomical’ rate of growth means the municipality could run out of available residential and commercial land sometime around 2026, and not 2040 as previously expected. Casey Council recently released preferred planning guidelines for four remaining undeveloped precincts in the city’s south and east - and urged the State’s Planning Authority to commence work on necessary Precinct Structure Plans.

The four precincts - totalling about 1800 hectares - are at Devon Meadows, Casey Fields South employment, Clyde South and “Croskell” at Cranbourne East. Their future development is expected to bring in an extra 37,000 people by 2041. Cr Geoff Ablett, speaking on the urgency for action, said State planning for the new precincts could take four to six years. If necessary planning wasn’t started soon, land will “run out” and the planning for new releases wouldn’t be finished in time, he said.

The fear was that people looking for land at that time would move on and choose another municipality to live or invest in. Cr Sam Aziz was quick to support his colleague, saying Casey’s current growth rate was well beyond previous published figures of 120 people per week. The city’s growth rate, he said, was “astronomical” - at 160 to 170 people per week. “Growth shows no sign of abating for at least a decade,” Cr Aziz said. Cr Aziz was also keen to see people of faith

taken into account in the city’s ‘vision’ for the new precincts, asking that suitable locations for places of worship be identified early in planning activities. The importance - or rather the lack - of a belief system or a faith was indicated by two appalling figures, he indicated - the rate of men’s suicide, and the “epidemic” of violent and fatal attacks on women. The need to cater for places of worship, where people could find “someone to talk to” was more needed than ever, he indicated.

Catholic schools benefit from further education Eleven teachers from Catholic schools in Berwick and Narre Warren are among the first-ever graduates of a trail-blazing Masters degree at the University of Melbourne. The Master of Clinical Teaching is designed for high-achieving teachers dedicated to advancing their education practice. Melbourne's program is the only one of its kind in Australia, and draws on cutting-edge research to help educators tailor their approach and achieve the best possible learning outcomes for each student. Local graduates from the innovative course include teachers from St Michael's Primary School and St Catherine's Primary School in Berwick, Mary MacKillop Primary School in Narre Warren North and Trinity Primary School in Narre Warren South. Rebecca Keating, a classroom teacher at St Catherine's Primary School, Berwick, said that the program helped her to implement an evidence-based approach to teaching that will improve the life chances of her students. "The Master of Clinical Teaching has been very beneficial to my everyday classroom teaching."Teaching is continually evolving

Diocese of Sale graduates of the Master of Clinical Teaching. and the course gave me the opportunity to update my knowledge on current trends and research, and what strategies give the best results," she said. Director of Catholic Education for the Dio-

cese of Sale which encompasses Berwick and Narre Warren, Maria Kirkwood, congratulated the graduates and said that their expertise will have a positive impact on local schools. "The outcomes we're seeing from the Mas-

ters program are very encouraging, and I am pleased that another large cohort of teachers from schools in the Catholic Diocese of Sale are currently progressing through the course," she said.

AROUND CASEY

with AMANDA STAPLEDON

Hope and discovery Whilst braving the cold and wet weather this past week, there were many exciting events that provided a warm, dry and friendly setting. Here are just a few of them: MARINE DISCOVERY CENTRE IN TOORADIN I attended an exhibition of designs and ideas for a proposed Marine Discovery/Research Centre in Tooradin. This was put together by Bachelor of Architecture students at Monash University, with the support of Professor Nigel Bertram, Dr Pat Machirter, Lindsay Mitchell and Marine Discovery Centre driver and president of the Tooradin Business Association, Marlene Hargreaves. What exciting prospects there are for the future of our coastal villages, for education of our children, youth and adults and for tourism in the south of Casey. BUSINESS FOCUS ON TOURISM Each year, the mayor hosts a Business Leader’s Dinner and this year it was my privilege to host it. We welcomed 90 business and community leaders, neighbouring mayors and councillors and enjoyed an information-packed evening, firstly affirming our support for our business in Casey. The theme for the night was tourism and we introduced the Casey Cardinia Tourism board and Chair Cathy Main spoke about the benefits to business in the Caesy Cardinia region if we invest in tourism and the visitor economy. We were joined by Federal MP Jason Wood who spoke about his Red Rattler project, neighbouring mayors from Cardinia and Baw Baw and Cardinia Shire councillors. Cr Sam Aziz spoke about Casey’s Smart Cities initiatives and Cr Damien Rosario expertly compered the night and our expert Q&A panel members. A very special feature was Sharon Start and Michael Prizeman’s performance singing a song that Sharon wrote for the night “Casey is Calling”. HOPE AUSTRALIA SOCCER ACADEMY It was my honour to welcome two of the three Hope Australia Soccer Academy coaches, Lamartine Fernandes Da Silva and family (wife Katia and children Gustavo and Giovana) and Joaquim Juvencio Dos Santos Silva and family (wife Livia and child Zoe), having welcomed the third coach Carlos Luciano Da Silva back in April. These three coaches are Soccer Royalty and it is a great honour that they have travelled all the way from Brazil to settle here in Australia and to be a part of a vision driven by Pastor Larry Sebastian to help engage, support and mentor disengaged youth. Thanks to a $1m commitment by La Trobe MP Jason Wood, Larry’s vision is now a reality and we are looking at many opportunities in which to utilise these wonderful people and HASA. ENGAGEMENT CONGRATULATIONS Mitchell Stewart might be better recognised at a dawn on Anzac Day or at the Remembrance Day Service in his smart Salvation Army Uniform playing the bugle. Casey’s beloved bugler became engaged to Bec a few weeks ago - they have great plans to marry at Inverloch and start their life together in Narre Warren. I thought it fitting to congratulate the happy couple and to

Stalwarts mark 40 years of service The 20-member group regularly fundraises with raffles and street stalls, selling crafts, cakes, jam and plants. "New members are always welcome to join in for a cuppa and socialise with friends," president Betty Keen said. It holds regular meetings at Hallam Community Learning Centre on the third Monday of the month. Details: 9774 0194.

Loyal volunteers have celebrated the Hallam Friends of Red Cross's 40th birthday at an event on Monday 17 June. Red Cross metropolitan-zone chairperson Heather Perrott spoke on the value of volunteering and the organisation's refugee program. She also presented long-service medals to members Josephine Thompson (who volunteered for 30 years) and Beryl Smith (20 years).

Casey City Council will move quickly to secure three farmlets at Clyde for a future sporting park - as part of a massive future sporting and recreational precinct, south of Ballarto Road. The recently approved planning scheme amendment C257 will allow Casey to compulsorily acquire land totaling just over 82 hectares for a new Clyde Park Sports Precinct. A recent council report on the proposed purchase noted the sports park was not yet listed in the 10-year capital works forecast. Their lives took a turn for the better when she won Tattslotto in 1983 and the family moved to Endeavour Hills, where she remained until 2004. Despite living in Australia for 64 years, Marion still has a strong Scottish accent. Marion lives a very active life and her children often find it hard to catch her at home at Willow Lodge in Bangholme. She enjoys line dancing, going to the movies with her friend Margaret and plays competition lawn bowls at Willow Lodge Bowling Club.

Berwick’s belter The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

- two premierships in two years. Not only is the former Noble Park champion blessed with an incredible squad, but he's a forward thinker, a modern day coach with an incredible tactical nous. The foundations are set, and as the club embarks on a new era in AFL Outer East, it seems the Wickers show no signs of slowing down. By Nick Creely Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

Roberts at helm By Brendan Rees It was a night of good food and laughter as the Rotary Club of Narre Warren celebrated their 44th changeover dinner. The event, which was attended by more than 50 people at Fountain Gate Hotel, saw new president Keith Roberts inducted on Wednesday 12 June. Mr Roberts said he was excited for the year ahead and hoped to "make an incredible impact on a large number of people." "I am confident that this role will provide many more highs than lows," he said as he took to the stage. "I want to express my gratitude to the Rotary Club of Narre Warren for the honour of asking me to become president of the club where previous incumbents have led with distinction." Mr Roberts said it was his intention to "initiate a small international project where I would like to see us identify a need and provide an answer to that need," Outgoing president Bruce Armstrong reflected on a great year, saying he was privileged to serve the club. Some of the club's notable achievements under Mr Armstrong's leadership included the club's "fantastic donation" of camping gear and school equipment valued at $4,600 to Operation Newstart, which re-engages young people aged 14 -16 with their families, schools and their communities. "This is the largest single donation I have been involved with in my 33 years in community service organisations. It made me very proud," he said. The club was also delighted in hosting 17-year-old exchange student Clara Ruhe from Germany, who used her baking skills to help raise $1,200 during a fundraiser.

This money went towards buying swags which were presented to Casey North Information and Support Service (CISS) during the changeover. "It's a fantastic program and it was really great Clara was able to raise that money," CISS executive officer Susan Magee said. Mr Armstrong made honourable mentions to club members who received the Paul Harris Fellow with Sapphire awards last year. This included Richards Edwards in recognition of 40 years of service, and Roger McGill in making the annual Charity Golf Day a success every year. He acknowledged many highlights throughout the year including donations to the Transit Outreach Church in Narre Warren to help people doing it tough. Upon being inaugurated, Mr Roberts said he promised he would "endeavour to be one

Caring for a loved one with mental illness can take a toll on carers - but a new support group in the City of Casey aims to provide a relaxing environment for carers to take some muchneeded time for themselves. Care for Carers will hold its first meeting on Friday June 21st from 9:30 til 11:30, and will meet on the third Friday of every month from then on. The meetings are free to attend. The idea for the support group came about when co-founders Maria Pintaudi and Jade Fraser, who both have lived experience of caring for a loved one with mental illness, realised there was no support group for people like them in the area. Deciding to fill the gap themselves, the pair gained support from the council and have hired a room at the Berwick Social Support Centre, 110 High Street, Berwick, behind the Masonic Hall. Anyone who cares for a loved one with mental illness and who feels they need to come along is able to attend.

"It's important for carers to take time for themselves," Ms Pintaudi said. "It's also helpful to find you're not isolated in your experiences as a carer. I felt so distraught, and so tied up in my duties that I became exhausted with it ... which wasn't good for my own mental health. "It would've been nice to speak with people going through the same thing and have time to relax and care for myself." Visitors will be able to have a coffee or tea, share experiences with each other and learn from one another in a supportive environment. There will be speakers on occasion, including psychologists and others who can provide assistance to carers. The first meeting will feature Rachel Clarke, a local yoga teacher who is also a youth project officer at Windermere who will speak to attendees about self-care and relaxation. Ms Pintaudi, who has been a mental health first aid instructor for the past year, will also have some resources from Beyond Blue which

YOUNG HIGH FLYER IS US BOUND By Narelle Coulter FIRST National Neilson Partners agent Samantha Johnson will rub shoulders with some of the best real estate professionals in the US later this year after winning a scholarship to attend a conference in San Francisco Samantha, 24, was announced as the inaugural winner of the Nitschke Scholarship, which honours the memory of the company's late chairman, David Nitschke. The Nitschke Scholarship was established to acknowledge the excellence of an individual within the 'First National Squad' and reward them with a trip to the National Association of Realtors conference. The announcement was made at the company's General Excellence and Marketing Awards held at Singapore's Flower Dome on Friday 24 May. On the same night, First National Neilson Partners was named the number one office in the lifestyle sector. The Neilson team scored the highest gross commission for lifestyle sales, highest number of lifestyle listings and highest number of settled lifestyle sales. Samantha went into real estate straight from school, following in the footsteps of her mum, the late Lyn Johnson, who also worked for First National Neilson Partners for a time. "I remember putting out open for inspection boards with my mum on a Saturday when I was young," Samantha said. Samantha started as PA to then managing director Ross Neilson, before moving into land sales and now

At the same time her mum was battling stage four cancer and Samantha was her carer as well as working full time. "It was the worst year of my life personally, but the best year of my life professionally," said Samantha. "The people at work were phenomenal

and supported me through everything. Going to work was a massive outlet for me. I knew what I was doing and I didn't have to worry about the other stuff. "I love what I do and the people I work with." Samantha said she was looking forward to her trip in November and hoped to learn from the other conference delegates. She said from her experience real

estate was a great career for young women. "I love working with the people I work with. My aim isn't to be the best salesperson, but to do my best day in, day out and love what I do. "At the end of the day it's about enjoying what I do and that way I feel like the world is my oyster." ●

FOCUS ON … MEDICALLY SPEAKING

Keep your heart healthy The Heart Foundation took the opportunity to remind men and boys to make healthy lifestyle choices during Men’s Health Week. Heart Foundation CEO Victoria Kellie-Ann Jolly said heart disease was responsible for close to 13 per cent of deaths in Australian men and males aged 18 to 34 are more than twice as likely than their female counterparts to have four or more risk factors of heart disease. “The theme of this year’s Men’s Health Week is keeping boys and men healthy. We’re focusing on what males of any age can do to minimise their risk of developing heart problems later in life,“ Ms Jolly said. “We are urging men to be good role models for their loved ones. We know that children

tend to mimic their parents’ behaviour so if parents make an effort to make healthy decisions children are more likely to as well.“ One of the Heart Foundation’s flagship programs, Heart Foundation Walking, is also getting involved in Men’s Health Week. They are encouraging existing walkers to “bring a bloke” along to a walk or download the Heart Foundation Walking app. Males who register on the app between 10 and 30 June will go into the draw to win a prize. “Over 30 per cent of men in Australia have high cholesterol and almost 75 per cent are overweight or obese. One-quarter of males have high to severe blood pressure levels. Walking is a great way for men to reduce these

risk factors,” Ms Jolly said. Steps to reduce the risk of developing heart disease include: 1 - Get a Heart Health Check. A new Medicarefunded Heart Health Check is available to all Australians. If you’re over 45, or over 30 if you’re Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, arrange one today. Your doctor will look at a range of factors about your heart health and help you devise a plan to stay well. 2 -Be more active more often. More than 81 per cent of Australian men do not meet physical activity guidelines. You should be active on most days of the week, and preferably all, aiming for at least 2.5 hours of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous

activity each week. That is only 30 minutes per day. 3 - Eat a heart-healthy diet. A healthy eating pattern doesn’t focus on one type of food or one particular nutrient. Heart-healthy eating relies on a combination of foods, chosen regularly, over time. A good pattern gives us food that is low in saturated and trans fats, salt and added sugar, and rich in wholegrains, fibre, antioxidants and unsaturated fats. 4 - Quit smoking. Smoking is one of the major risk factors for heart disease, not to mention a host of other health problems. Take action now to quit. To learn more about heart health checks visit the Heart Foundation website.

A comprehensive service Upper Beaconsfield GP Practice opened 3 months ago providing services to the community of Upper Beaconsfield and surrounding suburbs. Dr Anshu Malhotra and Dr Puneet Malhotra are certified to provide all forms of short and long acting reversible contraception. There are different types of contraceptives like barrier method, oral contraceptive pills, contraceptive injections, subdermal implants (Implanon), Intrauterine contraceptive device (IUDs). Subdermal implants are inserted on the inner side of upper arm providing effective contraception for 3 years. The IUDs are small plastic devices which are placed in the uterus (womb). IUDs are of two types, one containing copper and other containing a hormone. IUDs can last for 5 or 10 years depending on which one is inserted. They are more than 99% effec-

tive. The copper IUD can also be used for emergency contraception instead of using “Morning after Pill”. The Hormone IUD can also be used as progesterone part of HRT(hormone replacement therapy) for menopause. Iron deficiency is very common cause of tiredness. It can cause anaemia (low HB count), hair fall, menstruation abnormality etc. Treatment options include iron rich foods , dietary supplementation, oral iron medications (tablet and liquid). Helping take a bite out of bowel cancer June marks bowel cancer month, an initiative of Bowel Cancer Australia that is proudly supported by St John of God Berwick Hospital each year. Through its annual Red Apple Day on June 19, Bowel Cancer Australia encourages Australians to raise awareness for bowel cancer by purchasing a Bowel Cancer Awareness Ribbon as well as participate in apple-themed fundraising activities. Thanks to the generous donation of fresh apples from local growers Montague Fresh and Bonview Orchards, St John of God holds a fundraising day each year by encouraging visitors and caregivers to purchase a fresh apple in exchange for a generous gold coin donation. Although bowel cancer is one of the most treatable types of cancer, it still continues to be one of our biggest killers claiming the lives of

St John of God is holding its Red Apple Day fundraiser on 19 June, raising funds for Bowel Cancer Australia. 80 Australians each week due to low early detection rates. With detection of bowel cancer rising sharply over the age of 50, Bowel Cancer Australia recommends that all people between the ages of 50 and 74 be screened for bowel cancer every one to two years.

The testing for bowel cancer is free and non-invasive and can be done it home by screening for blood in the faeces. Symptoms include: change in bowel habit with diarrhoea, constipation or the feeling of incomplete emptying, thin bowel movements, blood in stools, abdominal pain, bloating or cramping and anal or rectal pain, a lump in the anus or rectum, unexplained weight loss, fatigue or anaemia. St John of God Berwick Hospital has a team of gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons and oncologists that can assist in the diagnosis and treatment of bowel cancer. It is fully equipped to provide colonoscopies, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments through the services of its qualified specialists. Visit sjog. org.au/find-a-doctor.

Early checks are the key Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer worldwide, so it has never been more important for people to be mindful of protecting their skin when outdoors, and to have their skin checked regularly for signs of skin cancer. The Australian way of life involves a lot of time spent outdoors and with sun damage one of the leading contributors of skin cancer, it is paramount to take protective measures against harmful ultraviolet (UV) light. Keep up to date on the UV index levels in your area. The UV index is a useful tool designed to make people aware of UV levels each day so they can better protect themselves in accordance with the danger posed by the day’s UV forecast. UV levels can still be high even when the weather is overcast or cold. Downloading the free Cancer Council Australia SunSmart app is one of the most convenient ways to keep up to date on the UV forecast for your area. The app gives specific location-based information about UV levels, and what times are the riskiest in terms of acquiring sun damage. Don’t wait until skin abnormalities appear as early detection of skin cancer is so important due to treatment procedures often becoming more invasive as symptoms start to appear. Melanoma can spread to other parts of the body, so having regular skin check-ups as a preventative measure is well advised. Dermal imaging is a non-invasive procedure that can assist with the detection of suspicious spots before they spread and cause further issues, so skin checks are completely painless and take as little as 30 minutes. To book in your next skin check, contact Sun Patrol Skin Cancer Centre Berwick. Phone 9769 3358 or visit www.skincancercentres.com.au

WHAT’S NEW? Anti wrinkle injections: The role of anti wrinkle injections is to relax wrinkle causing muscles, thereby softening and preventing the development of expression lines, creating a smooth and rejuvenated appearance. Wrinkles often appear around the forehead and eyes when we smile or frown and these areas can be treated along with crow’s feet, using a well studied safe medication that suits all skin types, administered only by our qualified medical professional.

Skin Needling: Skin needling is a skin rejuvenation treatment that helps stimulate collagen and elastin to promote smoother, healthier skin through a natural healing process. This treatment is suitable for all skin types and is designed to support skin regeneration to help conditions including acne scars, surgical scars/scarring, stretch marks, fine lines, pigmentation, enlarged pores, blackheads and mild textural irregularities and is suitable for treatment during the summer months. Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light: Laser, radio frequency and intense pulse light is used to treat conditions related to skin damage and premature aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, redness, acne scars, broken capillaries, pigmentation, melasma, age spots and general photo rejuvenation. Non ablative skin rejuvenation uses radio frequencies to improve the appearance of wrinkles, brown spots and minor scars by creating heat in the skin with out injuring the surface of the skin. The heat generated promotes collagen production which results in tighter, healthier, younger Iooking skin. Treatments are suitable to most skin types. The first consultation is complimentary (free) by appointment only with cosmetic Nurse, Marie Lebrasse@ Vitalase Skin and Laser Clinic at Dandenong Dermatology Centre, 1/110 David Street, Dandenong 3175 Tel: 9791 3455 201808156702_1-DJ35-18

Clubs to honour a great By Nick Creely It looms as a pivotal game in the context of the season when Woori Yallock ventures down to Holm Park to take on Beaconsfield for the first time on Saturday, and the two clubs will honour the impact of the great Russell Rowe in what is sure to be a special day on the footballing calendar. The Eagles and Tigers will battle it out on the field for the inaugural Russell Rowe Shield as part of the annual Past Players and Officials Luncheon at Holm Park, with a huge crowd expected to descend and take in the football and netball action. Russell was a major part of the 1971, 1973 and 1974 Woori Yallock premierships, as well as being named in their Team of the Century, and played 11 VFL/AFL games for Melbourne in 1980, famously kicking four goals and having 25 disposals on debut in a 22-point win. He went on to 15 goals in his career for the Demons, finishing up in Round 16 of that season against Geelong. Rowe was also a former Caulfield champion prior to being picked up by the Dees, and also a handy cricketer - representing the Victorian Country cricket XI against the fearsome West Indies in 1979. Upon embarking on a coaching career post his playing days, Russell led Beaconsfield to a drought-breaking 1999 senior premiership it’s first since joining the West Gippsland Football League in 1993 - with the club recently celebrating its 20-year reunion of a famous flag. Beaconsfield president Troy Robinson said there is genuine excitement about what he be-

1999 Beaconsfield premiership coach and Woori Yallock champion Russell Rowe (pictured third from left) will be honoured by both clubs on Saturday. Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS lieves will be a terrific day of community sport to recognise the contribution of a legendary figure for both clubs. “It’s what local and community football is all about - it’s great to put them on a pedestal, because it’s these blokes that create our history,” he said. “To have the opportunity - particularly for Russ, also Beacy and Woori Yallock - to play and have some sort of recognition between us, builds a new tradition.

“The amalgamation of the two competitions creates new vibes and energy, and this is what it’s all about.” Robinson also said that Russell will present a best on ground award on the day, as well as present the inaugural shield to the winning side in what he hopes can become a yearly event. But picking a winner is no easy task, with the Tigers sitting in third spot with a 5-2 record next to its name, while the home side are be-

ginning to click into gear with a 4-3 record and boasting the stingiest defence out of the nine clubs so far this season. On what is already set to be an actionpacked, emotion-filled day of local sport, Robinson confirmed that the club will also hold a minutes silence and wear black armbands for one of their greatest supporters - Frank Deegan - who recently passed away. Frank owned and operated the Central Hotel in Beaconsfield, the Cardinia Park Hotel in Beaconsfield and the Royal Hotel in Kooweerup, and was admired by those in the local community. “With Beaconsfield and the Central Hotel being our grassroots, and essentially where we were created, we will honour Frank with a minutes silence prior to the game and wear black armbands, just to show our appreciation for his efforts in the community,” he said. “It’s part of our DNA, it’s where our club was created in 1890, and we have to acknowledge that.” The club will also have two guest speakers on the day, with former Hawthorn defender and Beaconsfield-listed player Brendan Whitecross - as well as former Woori Yallock and Collingwood champion Damian Monkhorst -set to entertain the guests at the luncheon prior to the senior football action. For more information on the Past Players and Officials Luncheon, or for any ticketing enquires, as well as the Russell Rowe Shield, can contact Beaconsfield Past Players and Officials secretary Lawrie Canning on 0437 285 795 or Lawrie.canning@optusnet.com.au

Lions are in dominant touch Loudon let nothing through across half back, while Chloe Nagel and Ros Cook had total control of the wings. Cook and Rosie Davis were the first-quarter goal scorers for the Lions. Red Hill bottled things up in the second term with the game resembling a rugby-scrum. The Lions struggled to break the shackles, kicking 0.2 to 0.1, and were a frustrated group at half time. Coach Tom Bluhm made some important moves at the main break, with Henderson's switch to the middle having the most impact The regular defender played a great quarter of football, with skipper Rachel Betteridge and Hojnacki benefitting with third-quarter goals. The Lions ramped things up in the final term, with goals to Bureta, Cook, Renee Carter and birthday-girl Chloe Bluhm leading to a very impressive victory. Bureta, Hojnacki, Henderson and McGee were best for the Lions, while Courtney Dodson, Beth Studd, Danielle Case and KerrieAnne Micallef also did the jumper proud. The Lions celebrated Bluhm's birthday with a beautiful Mars Bar slice, cooked to perfection by Brooke Case. Thanks to team manager Megan Davis, trainers Kenny Harris and Kris Case, and all the other wonderful helpers for making this great team tick. The Lions face their biggest challenge of the season at 1pm at Greg Beck Oval in Frankston this Sunday - taking on second-placed Frankston Bombers. In the other Division 3 matches, Officer went down to Cerberus/Crib Point, 5.5 (35) to 1.8 (14), while Warragul knocked over Mornington at Western Park, 3.6 (24) to 1.6 (12).

The Comets find some form By Nicholas Creely STATE LEAGUE SOCCER REVIEW - ROUND 11 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST The Casey Comets clinched their fifth win of the season to solidify a position in the top five after a barnstorming win against Richmond SC on Saturday, 3-1. The match was set up with a dominant first half display from the home side, surging out to a 2-1 lead before adding another goal in the second half. Doveton SC, meanwhile, suffered a shock loss to Beaumaris SC, 3-2, but still occupy top spot on the table. The Doves did their best to try and wrestle back momentum against the Dolphins, but

ultimately couldn't overcome a slow start despite surging hard late, even adding a goal in the 89th minute. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Bunyip District put in a brave effort to draw level with Hampton Park at home on Saturday afternoon, 1-1. The Strikers battled admirably after an early strike by the visitors, and slowly worked their way back in the context before finding the much-needed goal. In other matches, Somerville Eagles were a class above Casey Panthers at Prospect Hill, 3-0, White Star Dandenong thumped Endeavour Hills 5-1 in a shock result, while Pakenham couldn't get the points in a 1-0 loss to Rosebud SC. 12415883-FA16-19

SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 6 DIVISION 2 Cranbourne remains undefeated in Division 2 after a comfortable win against Seaford at home on Saturday afternoon, 7.2 (44) to 3.2 (20). The Eagles led from start to finish, but set the game up with a three goal to one secondterm, with Lana Fullwood in dominant touch with three goals in a best afield performance. Leah Young, Cat Robinson and Sam Dobson were others to impress for the Eagles. Beaconsfield also picked up a hard-fought win away against St Kilda on Sunday, 3.7 (25) to 2.2 (14). The Eagles took until the final term to shake off the Sharks, who battled hard to wrestle back the lead throughout the second and third terms, but the visitors kicked 1.3 and held the home side scoreless to power away. In other games, Pearcedale went down to Eastern Devils, 7.7 (49) to 0.3 (3). DIVISION 3 Pakenham has overcome an early case of inaccuracy to remain undefeated in SEWF Division Three with a 59-point - 8.15.63 to 0.4.4 - victory over Red Hill at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday. The Lions dominated possession in the first quarter but were forced wide by a discipline Red Hill defence - the home side kicking 2.8 to 0.1 for the term. The early dominance was brought about by a brilliant midfield display, with Bel McGee getting first hands to the ball in the ruck and providing silver service to Rosie Bureta, Lauren Hojnacki and Sophie Gray. A new start for the Dees By Hayley Wildes

Donlan’s dozen from deep By Hayley Wildes Round 12 of the Big V basketball season was an indifferent one for the Casey Cavaliers. The Championship men had a busy weekend and started it off with a home win over Keilor on Saturday night. It was a tight first half, but the Cavs out-scored the Thunder 2819 in the third term to take control of the game and eventually run out 89-78 winners. Matt Donlan (25 points) caught fire from deep to drain six triples, while Raheem Lemons (23 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists) and Brandon Polk (20 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists) did plenty of damage too. Backing up the following afternoon, the Cavs produced a disappointing effort in Geelong against cellar-dwellers, Corio Bay. The Cavs found it tough to slow down the Stingrays and eventually fell by eight points, 97-89. Lemons (20 points and 6 rebounds) led the way, while Donlan (18 points) was again hot from behind the arc as he drained another six long bombs to make it a dozen triples over the weekend. After going 1-1 over the weekend, Casey remains second on the ladder with a 12-4 record. The Championship women's season continues to spiral out of control as they suffered their seventh loss in a row, this time falling to Southern Peninsula at home, 102-76. Despite the best efforts of Toccara Ross (31 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals) and Sarah Halejian (16 rebounds, 14 points and 8 assists), berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Casey couldn't get the required stops and they just can't find their groove this season. With a 4-8 record, the Cavs are seventh. The Youth League 1 men suffered a heartbreaking loss on the road against Camberwell. In a back and forth game, the Cavs fought tooth and nail for the win, but ultimately fell agonisingly short, 77-76. Brendon Head (29 points and 10 rebounds) was sublime and almost got the Cavs over the line, while Jordan Gooiker (15 points and 10 rebounds) also battled hard all afternoon. In what is a very tight competition, Casey sits fifth with a 10-6 record. The juggernaut that is the Casey Youth League 1 women's team continues to roll on. Taking on third-placed Camberwell on the road shaped as a major test for the Cavs, but they passed with flying colours. While Casey struggled at times on offence, its defensive tenacity made sure the side stayed in the contest and eventually flourished to beat the Dragons by 15 points, 56-41. Lauren Tuplin (22 points and 7 steals) was the lone Cav to get going on offence, but it mattered little as Casey held Camberwell to just 10 per cent shooting from deep. The Cavs (12-2) are riding a nine-game winning streak and sit on top of the ladder. Round 13 action tips off with a Youth League 1 women and men double-header at Casey Stadium on Saturday from 6pm, while the Championship men and women hit the road to battle Hume City.

"He's already got established relationships out there with the players, he knows our game style, he's coached senior footy in his own right to premierships at amateur level and we know he's excited by that opportunity." Casey currently sits 11th on the VFL ladder with a 3-6 and Radford will make his VFL head coaching debut on Sunday when the Demons head to Coburg to face the struggling Tigers who have just one win to their name.

The Melbourne Demons have had a mid-season shake-up in light of their 3-9 start to the 2019 AFL season and the Casey Demons will feel the ripple effects. In a stunning move, Casey coach Jade Rawlings has been named as Melbourne's new forward line coach in a full-time position and has stepped aside from his role at Casey effective immediately. Rawlings, who led the Demons to the 2018 VFL grand final, was in his second year at the helm and had instilled a tough, defensiveminded game style at Casey. Sam Radford, who was an assistant coach to Rawlings at Casey, has taken over the reins as VFL coach. Other major changes to Melbourne's football department include Max Rooke moving from forward line coach to development coach, while Brendan McCartney has been moved from defensive coach to a role mentoring the AFL and VFL assistant coaches. As published on Melbourne's official website (melbournefc.com.au), general manager of football operations at Melbourne, Josh Mahoney highlighted why the changes were being made mid-season. "Over the last couple of weeks, the club has taken the opportunity to seek feedback from players, coaches and football staff to identify the clear opportunities for us to improve for the back-half of the season," he said. Speaking of Radford, Mahoney said he was the standout candidate to take over from Rawlings at Casey.

Burras send a message By Hayley Wildes MORNINGTON PENINSULA DIVISION 2 - ROUND 10 Since winning its first game of the season back in March, Pearcedale's season has gone from bad to worse and on Saturday the Panthers lost their 10th game in row, this time succumbing to Hastings at home. The Panthers were in the contest at quarter-time thanks largely to the Blues' inaccurate kicking, but Hastings' sheer dominance proved too much as the side ran out 16.23 (119) to 11.7 (73) winners. Laughlin Cowell (four goals) and Kaolan Thornton were the shining lights for the Panthers in an otherwise disappointing day. Much like Pearcedale, Devon Meadows' season continues to spiral out of control. Having started the season off strongly to own a 2-1 record, the Panthers have since lost eight games in a row and were taught a lesson by Langwarrin on Saturday. Devon Meadows was never in the contest as Langwarrin - led by Josh Biggs (four goals) and Tim McGenniss - ruthlessly disposed of the Panthers by 103 points, 19.14 (128) to 3.7 (25). Despite the loss, Riley Thorpe and Lachlan Moss battled hard all day for the Panthers. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 9 The top-of-the-table clash between Springvale Districts and Keysborough returned an incredible result. The crowd in attendance was hoping for a classic between two teams that had only suffered one loss each heading into the game, but Keysborough had other ideas. The Burras went into Springvale Reserve and completely embarrassed the Dees with composure, class and a dominance across the board that would usually be reserved for a match between an undefeated team and a winless side.

Zak Hogton (left) and Peter Dye have been impressive in Hampton Park's unbeaten start. 192904 Picture: ROB CAREW Keysborough's Cory Hargreaves (two goals) got scoring underway with a classy snap less than a minute into the game and it was a sign of things to come. The Burras' forwards were just too strong, led by Tim Werner (four goals) and Matt Carnelley (three goals), and the midfield dominance was easy to see as Riet Pal (three goals) and Ryan Goodes ran riot in dynamic performances. As Springvale Districts began to lose hope of a win, undisciplined play snuck into its game - highlighted by George Angelopoulos giving away a 100-metre penalty that resulted in a second quarter Ryan Goodes goal. The half-time score line was a whopping 12.6 (78) to 0.3 (3) and the Burras weren't done yet. Springvale Districts did lift its work rate in the third quarter and put on three goals, but the fourth quarter produced more Keysborough magic as the Burras eventually ran out 106-point winners, 21.12 (138) to 4.8 (32). The Doveton Eagles were a class above

Skye, holding the Bombers to just one goal in the first half and running way with an 80-point win, 20.11 (131) to 7.9 (51). Adam Read (eight goals) was absolutely unstoppable up forward for the Eagles, while the work of Stuart Johnson and Nicholas Battle through the midfield was just as important in completely overwhelming Skye. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 9 A seven-goal to one second quarter set up Hampton Park's comprehensive win over Ashwood. The Redbacks were in complete control all day as the likes of Shannon Henwood and Ashley Scott powered Hallam to a 14.9 (93) to 4.10 (34) win. The win was yet another masterclass from Hampton Park, which remains undefeated and two wins clear on top of the ladder. Endeavour Hills kept Black Rock scoreless in the first half of their clash and went on to record a 71-point win, 13.11 (89) to 2.6 (18). Daniel Strom (two goals) and Sam McLean did as they pleased all day as the Falcons further strengthened their stranglehold on second position.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 9 After five losses in a row, Hallam returned to the winners' list with a resounding win over Lyndale. The Hawks jumped out of the gates with a five-goal to two opening term and with Ben Coutet, Logan Mills and Jack Sharlassian (four goals) playing dynamic games, Hallam went onto to win by 49 points, 13.12 (90) to 6.5 (41). For Lyndale, Brad Edwards and Shane Thomas (two goals) were among the best. Lyndhurst and Moorabbin were neck and neck for the first three quarters of their game, but the Lightning roared home in the final term to record a strong win. With Lyndhurst leading by just five points at the final break, it was anyone's game entering the final stanza, but the Lightning quickly made the game theirs with an impressive fourth quarter. With it all on the line, Lyndhurst kicked four goals to two to come away with a 13.14 (92) to 11.7 (73) win. Cory Willshire, Zach Woolcock and David Ford (four goals) played vital roles for the Lightning. WEST GIPPSLAND ROUND 10 Tooradin-Dalmore jumped out of the gates against Garfield at home to hold a five-goal lead at the main break, but in what was a thrilling second half of action, the Stars came roaring home. With Brad Lenders and Waide Symes leading the way, the Seagulls looked in control, but they failed to make the most of their chances in front of goal and the Stars worked their way back into the contest as Joseph Verleg and Ned Marsh lifted their team. After a final frantic few minutes, when the final siren sounded the Seagulls hadn't done enough to get the win, but held on for a draw, 8.15 (63) to 9.9 (63).
